I used to have just a few playlists that I would listen to on occasion when I was in the mood for them and I did that by genre. Whenever I wasn't in the mood for that I'd listen to my liked songs on shuffle and skip thru till I found whatever I was in the mood for and usually ended up searching & queueing songs (SoundCloud)
But then I started using Spotify and I don't pay for shit and so obviously I couldn't skip anymore, so I started having to use more playlists n such
But of course I was also discovering more music, and would go through mini phases of discovering new artists and genres n stuff, and I would get a few songs I really really liked from time to time
I started off with just a 'favorites' playlist, but as I said, mini phases
So I made a 'want to hear more playlist' and then that hit about 30 songs and I was in another phase so I made a 'want to hear more 2' and then 3 and then 4 and so on
So I have about 15 now, each with about 20-30 songs in them, and I have a massive 'want to hear more (all)' playlist as well as my old 'favorites' playlist, an 'ultra fave' and a 'new fave' playlist (ultra fave being all-time favorites, and new fave replacing my old favorites playlist)
And then of course on top of that I still have playlists by genre and sometimes artists or groups of artists with similar vibes

How to Make a Self-Ship Playlist (when you're too afraid to ask)
hey there! you! yeah, you, lurking in the f/o tag, i see you. so you wanna make a self-ship playlist but don't know where to start? welcome to "would-they-listen-to-that" radio, ran by a self-shipping veteran! this post is a special request from an anonymous caller, so let's get into it! how do we make a self-ship playlist when we have zero idea what we're doing?
Tumblr media
‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡ STEP ONE: BLORBO ROULETTE ‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡
The first step is to pick someone who catches your eye! Who's that fictional character lurking in the back of your mind? Who have you thought about snuggling with to distract yourself from the monotony of a three-hour geometry lecture? Whose tag did you take a "casual stroll" down last night? If you've got someone in mind from those questions alone, there's your target!
‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡ STEP TWO: DATING ‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡
No, not that kind of dating. I'm talking about historical dating! The time period your character comes from influences the music they listen to! Are they a vampire from the late 1980's? Try some early trad-goth bands and hair metal! Are they a magical girl from the early 2000's? Try some y2k girl groups and rnb! "But mod, what if my character is anachronistic, and their whole shtick is they act like a 1940's jazz singer yet they live in 2020?" If you somehow catapulted Ella Fitzgerald into the nowadays, don't be afraid to be anachronistic with your playlist! Billie Holiday can go right next to Billie Eilish!
‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡ STEP THREE: SOUNDING IT OUT ‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡
If your f/o has one, listen to their soundtrack for inspiration! What genres are present in their soundtrack? If they sing, in what style? What do they sing about? What kinds of music reflect their environment? If the character has any musical inclination or is a fan of certain musicians, take that into account! If your blorbo is a canon Weezer fan or sings along to Frank Sinatra, that gives a strong basis of what they listen to.
‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡ STEP FOUR: ULTRASOUND ‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡
That's right, you gotta look inside yourself. You're a character in this self-ship too. It takes two (at least) to tango! Find songs that are meaningful to you. What types of music do you enjoy? What songs do you believe are integral to your relationship with your blorbo? What songs describe your feelings towards them? If you have an enemies-to-lovers relationship, look into songs that have a similar theme. Don't be afraid to explore new music too! Who knows what you might find? There's always an opportunity to hear your new favorite song!
‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡ STEP FIVE: BE FREE ‧₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹♡
Seriously, cringe culture is dead. If it's not, I'm giving you and your f/o hammers so you can kill it. You're allowed to have fun with fiction. The FBI isn't gonna swarm your house because you wanted to give Batman a kiss. It sounds cheesy, but the first (and only step really) to making a self-ship playlist is to have fun and be yourself. You don't need to listen to this post! I'm not the be-all end-all of self-shipping! Whether you take my advice is totally up to you! There really are no wrong answers here!
If you made it this far into the yap session, thank you so much for reading! I hope this advice serves you well! If not, that's okay too! As always,
thanks for dialing in!

Hi, I wasn't that anon but I have a PhD in music history and these responses to that Spotify post (much as I don't understand why that was sent to you) are hurting me. All I'm going to say is that if you're responding with "why is it always black people?" please take a history of popular music class if you genuinely do not understand why it is black people who get the focus when it comes to POPULAR MUSIC. (to be clear, this in this sense does not mean just "pop," but any genre that is not classical music or traditional folk music - so, rock, country, metal, R&B, hip hop, jazz all fall here, too)
Anon's whole point was that this is not a typical "minority representation" discussion, but one where the minority in question has always been dominant in this particular art form, in these particular genres, including being the majority in some of the ones Tumblr as a whole (maybe not the readership here specifically) really likes. You can't just import what you'd say about representation in any other medium. "Great black popular music artists" is not like, say, "great black filmmakers," it's more like "great female romance novelists." I don't even have to go out of my way to include black artists when I teach about American or British popular music, the way I do somewhat when I'm teaching about classical music. Yes, even from eras where the US popular music industry did their best to segregate them - you still had black artists who were influential and popular enough that they had lots of white audiences. Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole come to mind.
I agree that just looking at people's Spotify Wrapped is not the greatest metric - as you said, what if someone was just listening to songs on there by a few artists. I use my Spotify mostly for playlists for my college classes I teach, so this particular year I was teaching a lot of Japanese popular music courses, and so they ended up being disproportionately Japanese. (I still had some black artists I was listening to in other contexts, though.) So my results tend to be odd and not very representative of their point. But I think I agree with the general point of why Black Tumblr users do this. Regardless, when people are responding to this with the same old discourse they use for every other discussion like this with something where black people (or whichever group) are UNDERrepresented, then they need to know that they missed the central point.
--
I get it, but truly, the number of weird nerds who don't listen to popular music from the Anglophone world in any kind of normal pattern is really, really high, and the amount that people get attacked even when it doesn't make sense is also very high. I know you and others are like "Well, we weren't talking about you", but when it comes to getting yelled at, they're quite right in thinking it is about them. That is how this nonsense always plays out, and it isn't necessarily black users spearheading it either.
This is US centrism wank boiling over, among other factors. The number of fans from outside the anglophone world coming at fandom from an all Asian media all the time place was high on my tumblr even during the years when I was completely out of Asian media fandoms. Now that I'm back in an Asian media phase, it's even higher. And that's just one cultural group that's going to be pissed about this kind of topic.
A couple of people have made stupidass comments, including about rap (quelle surprise), but the anger at being expected to know or care who Kendrick Lamar et al. are is not surprising.
Nobody should be looking at spotify wrapped this way in the first place.
In fact, nobody should be looking at spotify wrapped this year at all.
The real conversation should be about firing programmers and replacing them with incompetent AI.

Favourite olli lore? (Or just any fun facts/stories lol, I don't know an awful lot to start so anything will probably be surprising to me ahaha)
hey anon! oh I have a looooot of lore tidbits for you then! 🤭 I'll try to include a source for all that I can, other stuff unsourced is from things I've read and remembered over the years (sorryyy) special thanks to @theflyingfeeling and @sparfloxacin for fact checking and helping me find some of the sources, i love youuuuu 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Olli plays bass, guitar, he has some DJ skills and also plays percussions, piano and wine cups (yes). He graduated from Oulu Conservatory in 2017 with a pop and jazz background. I believe he's the only member of the band we haven't heard sing so far, but he's got amazing dance moves to make up for it.
He's been friends with Joonas, Tommi and Santeri their tour manager for almost 20 years. Before joining Blind Channel he used to play in a metal band called Abhorrent Ritual with Joonas and Santeri.
His instagram handle was @olliveri at some point, and he had dreadlocks when he was younger which didn't suit him at all, sorry 😂
He used to work in a hospital transporting patients, I guess he quit his daytime job after ESC to become a full time musician.
As far as sports goes, he does yoga (here's another clip) and cycling (he might even have a "playlist" for that - sorry, there's no link to the actual playlist that we know of).
The sextant tattoo on his bicep has a meaning - know where you are and where you're headed, check the stars. He also has a "best gig ever" tattoo on his arm that he shares with many other finnish musicians.
He broke 2 basses as far as we know, a brand new one while filming the videoclip for Darker Than Black, and the one he (accidentally, he was drunk) left on the roof of a car after stopping at a gas station during their 2021 summer tour (RIP Simba). Some other basses were lost on their way to various festivals in 2023, it's unknown if he ever got them back.
He's in charge of all the visual design for the band, like the merch, album covers, websites and some parts of the stage design (he made the prototype for the inflatable morningstar they had as background on some festivals). He designed the outfits the band wore to promote Exit Emotions (the red/black and the white ones) and also learned how to sew to make them. Oh, and he also designed the Blind Channel pendants that are sold on their store, it is unknown if he also makes them or not.
On tour, it seems he used to iron everyone's clothes, or at least his fancy shirts by leaving the shower running with hot water and steam iron the clothes. It was also said that he's a bit neurotic with the cleaning on the bus and with his packing, because he needs to do it the day before they leave their hotel. He also has many many alarms to wake up on tour because he "sleeps well" (according to Joonas you have to throw things at him to wake up, or hit him).
He calls himself "Mr. Recovery Man" due to his ability to somehow recover quickly after he's been sick or hangover. Some other nicknames for him are Hobbit or Frodo.
He's also the chairman/president of the board of their music company, Bloodbros Oy. Evey member of the band has a company of their own, Olli's is named Mellon Music Oy after the sindarin word for friend.
And last but not least, let's not forget his amazing bartender skills. Oh, and he has a strong gag reflex :)

Band of Brothers Headcanons: What music they’d be listening to
(+ Playlists and absolutely historically inaccurate)
A/N: Hey! So here’s my first BoB headcanon - I hope you enjoy it! I’m sorry if this is rather short. Let me know if you’d like to see other characters in those or have any requests :) I also spent way too much time making several playlists for them, I’ll link them for you at the end if you wanna listen to them!
Tumblr media
{Dick Winters}
• Classical. Music.
• Can list you every thing that Bach or Vivaldi ever published, but with the backstories
• I just picture him closing his eyes and sighing very loudly whenever he listens to something he loves
• Will dance to old Jazz music until the sun comes up, and says the day after that it was a really wild night
• Also listens A LOT to Lana (would never admit it)
• Secretly gossips and argues over her online. Tries to keep it a secret but his username is “DickDelRey101”
{Lewis Nixon}
• Classic Rock all the way
• I’m talking Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, ACDC…
• “Paranoid - Black Sabbath” was his wedding song
• When he gets home he falls into the old chair next to the record player with a bottle of whiskey already waiting
• He’s always like “I need this music to calm down, don’t you understand???” and absolutely means it
• Drives the car only to listen to “Enter Sandman” and wear sunglasses while he does (windows all the way down, volume max)
• 100% certified Dad music
{Ronald Speirs}
• This mans music is all over the place
• Just like my feelings for him lol
• But mostly listens to a lot of old music???
• Like 40s to 60s, also a big fan of Elvis and Johnny Cash
• Literally has pictures of them hanging in the doorway
• Always says he doesn’t care about things like music, but will make a playlist for every one he meets with songs that remind him of them
• I swear to everything music would be one of his love languages - he’d absolutely remember every song you ever liked
• Turns the radio louder randomly to songs with the explanation “saw you smiling to that with your morning coffee last week”
{Donald Malarkey}
• Listens to a whole lot of sad songs - and I’m talking about gut wrenching, laying on the bathroom floor kind of sad
• Also somehow into Grunge??
• At least three Radiohead songs in every one of his playlists
• The Smiths is his happy music
• When his favorite Pink Floyd Record is on he listens to it all day. He runs to push the play button again every time it stops.
{Joe Toye}
• 100% an alternative Rock / Nu Metal kind of guy
• Would have Deftones playing all day
• Also listens to Bloodhound Gang a lot lol (The song “Jackass” is his anthem!!!)
• Just imagine him sitting in the garage with Guarnere, drinking beer while an old Limp Bizkit vinyl is on
• He thinks it’s the greatest thing of all time that bands began to combine Rap with Hardcore
• In terms of that - definitely a fan of Deez Nuts, Hollywood Undead or Linkin Park
• “Band of Brothers - Deez Nuts” is literally his favorite song
{George Luz}
• Unironically listens to the Soundtrack of Oklahoma
• It just puts a smile on his face every time he hears it - takes him back to the news of the musical still on broadway back in war
• Also loves & defends Tom Lehrer to death
• He knows every song from him by heart and always sings the loudest
• Will randomly sing his favorite songs throughout the day, which makes everyone shake their head but deep down they all love it
• He’s almost afraid of sad music
• He aspires to be Ricky Nelson in another life
{Eugene Roe}
• Similar to Malarkey, but doesn’t cry to those songs
• Just sits in silence with a cigarette between his fingers, staring into the nothingness while thinking about his time with Easy
• “Feels like a movie” - songs were made for him
• When he listens to Elton John or Billy Joel you know he’s in a happy mood
• Is also the anonymous person Winter argues with online about Lana
• DickDelRay101 replied: Are you clinically insane? How could you deny it’s her best album? Did you even listen to it?
• Absolutely knows that it’s Winters and accidentally called him Sir when he replied (several times)
{Joe Liebgott}
• Hear. Me. Out. He’s a pop punk & grunge boy all the way
• Has a big collection of thrifted vinyls (if you can’t find him, search at the next thrift market)
• Puts on Nirvana or the Offspring and just lays on his bed while smoking a whole pack of cigarettes
• Room full of ripped band posters and at least one guitar (but can’t play, although he says he can)
• 10/10 would’ve lived in a skatepark in another life
• Also really into Old school HipHop, loves the Beastie Boys
• Accidentally went to a New Kids on the Block concert once. Said he hated it but stayed until the very last minute.
{David Webster}
• Would also listen to classical music
• But it would just be for people to think he’s very intellectual, actually can’t stand it
• In reality really into slow and soft love songs
• Listens to Vera Lynn on a daily basis and happily admits that he cries to her songs. Always speaks of “Our Vera.”
• When he listens to “There’ll always be an England” he suddenly gets an English accent.
• The Fleetwoods is his favorite band
• Tries to listen to Pop Punk because he knows Joe loves it, but he absolutely hates it
• “There’s no emotion Joe!!”
• “For fucks sake, Web, there’s all the goddamn emotion!!?!!”
{Bull Randleman}
• Hard Rock, can’t say more
• Also 100% certified Dad music. He’s the one who visits Nixon once a week to play poker and smoke cigars while listening to his records
• Is the guy at a concert who will accidentally throw you to the ground while in a mosh pit
• But will absolutely make everyone stop so he can pick you up again

Music recs please!!!
Due to the Apple Music Apocalypse earlier this year I lost all my playlists, and my festive playlist was due a refresh anyway, so I'm reaching out to you, beautiful friends, to suggest Seasonal Music.
Guidelines:
Overall vibe
I'm looking for a contemporary (ie largely post-70s unless it's a really good one) festive playlist that does not feel like being trapped on a retail floor. Ideally it would include varied takes on the season, whether that's atheist Christmases, non-holiday winter vibes, non-anglo takes, cynical exhaustion with Christmas, New Year/Hogmanay, etc.
The vibe is mellow, perhaps melancholy in places, and with a focus on winter and what it means/feels like rather than Christmas specifically.
Themes (any or several of...)
Wintery imagery (not necessarily holiday-themed - could be a cold clear night, snow/ice, sharp wind, darkness, bare trees, stars, all that good stuff)
Hope/warmth/togetherness type festive feeling
Looking for warmth/light in the dark/cold (successfully or unsuccessfully)
Historic events from December/January
Oh god Christmas is happening batten down the hatches
It can be Christian but the Christianity it should evoke is old world churches, chorales, incense and the creeping shadow of myrrh-scented death, not like. YAY IT'S OUR BOY JESUS WHAT A LAD. I'm a Quaker but to count as a Seasonal Vibe this shit needs to get High Church.
And yeah ok like general holiday type themes are also good
Genres
Basically anything, although in the interests of not sounding too Retail Water Torture and being an alternative playlist I would steer away from jazz, country and choral music. I generally am into:
New wave and dance pop
Electronic, trance and industrial
Punk (including but not limited to pop punk)
Rap (particularly prog/experimental hiphop, and grime)
Metal (primarily numetal and tech metal)
The heavier end of Weird Alternative Bands
Things that have a driving beat or strong momentum
Not...
Alternative covers of Christmas standards by pop punk/metal/pop/whatever acts. There are a billion of them, I do not want them for this playlist.
Heavy/updated versions of Christmas carols or hymns (the exception is that I wouldn't mind finding a good punk cover of Auld Lang Syne, and I don't mind the more obscure/church-only carols like Angels From the Realms of Glory or the Coventry Carol. Also I have already put Christopher Lee's entire Christmas discography on there.)
'I got dumped on Christmas' pop punk songs. I have recently realised how many of these there are and buddy you're not the Ramones.
Anything mawkishly American (and I swear to Christ if it makes me have even a passing thought of Christmas Shoes I will fling myself off a building what is WRONG with American Christmas it's so gross)
Focused specifically on the trappings of Christmas itself (trees, presents, food, stockings, Santa) unless it has something else to say
Super chipper/upbeat or, on the flip side, pointlessly cynical
For the most part, airy/folksy acoustic stuff does very little for me, but it's not a hard line
Any suggestions gratefully received ❤️

Hey there. Since ace tav is a bard, just wondering if you have thoughts on the camps musical tastes/requests for her to play?
Hmm, I gotta think about this.
To start Ace!Tav loves taking requests. If they're been traveling for a while and somebody requests a song, they're more than happy to oblige. It makes them feel needed. If they can be just a little useful to their new companions they're going to take it.
As for Tav's personal taste in music, it's rather eclectic. All the music they've learned has been from what they've heard on the road from other bards. Probably a lot of folk music, and whatever the Faerun equivalent is to country, rock and roll, and the top 100. And, honestly, throw some jazz, soul and rap in there as well.
I don't think they're particularly judgemental when it comes to music taste. Music is everything to them. It's how they're able to express themselves and convey emotions they can't always articulate. Whatever music speaks to a person is good music.
As for the rest of the companions, here's their music taste based on ✨vibes✨.
Tumblr media
Lae'zel: Would probably say she doesn't like/listen to music. However, if you introduce her to heavy metal, she's going to head bang with the best of them.
Tumblr media
Karlach: Punk, all the way. Get that woman into a mosh pit.
Tumblr media
Shadowheart: Late 90s/early 2000s nu metal and the emo scene in general. Yes, I've heard the jokes and I'm sticking to them.
Tumblr media
Gale: Your dad's 1970s playlist. Is genuinely surprised whenever anybody 10 years younger than him had heard of Fleetwood Mac. Definitely loves the Beatles.
Tumblr media
Wyll: Honestly the only one who sincerely enjoys classical music. Deceptively a bit of a music snob. Will go on about how some obscure soul album defined a generation. However, still enjoys the radio hits and anything romantic you can dance to.
Tumblr media
Astarion: Genuinely hasn't put much thought into music before meeting Tav. Likes what he likes, and has a difficult time articulating exactly what that is. Some classic pieces. That one song he heard in a tavern once a hundred years ago. Some angry rock and roll. Some sad boy playlist. And a good scattering of who ever is Baldur's Gate's equivalent of Megan Thee Stalion or Dua Lipa. Bottom line his playlist is a goddamn mess.

lol I’ll guess that u listened to Monster while writing that scene? And yes I love Christian music. I care about the lyrics I’m listening to so Christian is what I tend to fill my playlist w. Plus, since I’m a Christian myself I like to support those artists and know they exist bc they’re less common than secular music.
On a LU note, favorite genres per boy? And do they focus more on lyrics or melody?
Oh fantastic! I was a bit wary of suggesting just the Christian artists I grew up on, but I'm glad to hear you enjoy it too! I tend to be more careful with what I listen to as well, but sometimes you don't get a choice (and that sometimes is when your room-mate doesn't give a darn).
For the LU boys:
Hyrule doesn't have a lot of experience with music, but most of what he hears in his era is folk music, much of it passed down from Legend's era (or just straight up written by Legend). He'd enjoy most stringed instruments, I think, but especially because stringed instruments are the best for group songs (the musician can sing too) and he loves the sense of community the music creates.
Legend would be a mix of folk and work songs, since, again, it's something he would have grown up around. He'd be pretty versatile about music though, but I think his favorite instruments would be the piano and the violin/fiddle. Still I think blues and jazz would be something he's really enjoy as well, or just anything really soulful, although he'd have to be in the mood.
Twilight is a country boy, need I say more? He's a fiddler himself, I think, but the banjo and guitar are special too. Mouth organ is a maybe, sometimes it's too much for his ears, but the way it compliments other music is something he really enjoys. French horn is something he really lives though (since it plays so prominent a role in Ordon's music)
Sky is accustomed to the lyre and flute family, but I think he'd really enjoy communal music like Legend, Twilight, and Hyrule. He'd probably get a rush from rock, but only in small doses, as I really can't see this man being a metal head. If he had the chance to hear a full orchestra though, I think he'd be utterly blown away and just dazzled! Same with a proper choir performance. He feels like the type of guy who'd enjoy a vocal arrangement as much as an instrumental one.
Time is a rock man. 80's style dad rock. He cannonically says things like "groovy", so this is cannon to me. (also @cantankerouscanuck got me hooked on the idea). He likes softer music too, but his happy music is the heavier stuff. The ocarina may be what he;s known for, but this guy performed with the Indigo-Go's, he knows how to handle a guitar!
Wind is a pirate, so like Legend, he's used to working songs mostly, but I think he'd also enjoy rock, like most 13-year-olds do at one point or another LOL. He'd be mostly versatile though! Anything with a beat makes him happy mostly (RIP Wind, you would've loved rap)
Four isn't much of a musical person, as none of the colors can agree and the chaos is a bit much, but when split, let's just say that they cover the full spectrum of musical interests :)
Warriors is one that I headcannon to come from a poorer background, so instruments weren;t much of a thing where he's from. Vocal arrangements and folk music were common, but because I love the idea of a Celtic Captain, there was a piper who came to town once and a bit and the music was much adored by a young Wars. Now that he's come city side, he's very fond of piano, but that deep love of the pipes will never leave him <3
Wild isn't much used to music, but I think he just likes anything you can play on an accordion, since the association with Kass and the Rito makes him happiest. Don't tell me that they don't all adore and treat "the champion's descendant" like one of their own! Rito village is his home away from home, but Kass's music is a constant no matter where he is. He'd like other music, I think, especially "exotic" music like what we hear played in Gerudo Town (Naboris' Theme slaps!) but the accordion is the sound of home to him.

Some of my Stein Soul Eater playlists
I do a lot of driving for my day job. Before I was a driver, I used to work at a record store doing album reviews and critique, but even before then, music has always been at the center of my story ever since I was a wee child. To friends, I'm the designated car DJ, the guy with the playlist, the genre-bender. I've had all kinds of people ask me for music reccs, and, much to my surprise, Soul Eater-specific music reccs... This is all to say that every time I get into my car for work now and I reach to put on one of my playlists, I can't help but think "damn I need to make a public compilation or something." SO HUZZAH! Enjoy this mess of a collection. Everything here is a perpetual WIP and will be added onto until the end of time. (also feel free to send me music in my ask box, some of you have, I'm always clawing for new music, but I listen to a lot of music...)
So without further adieu, I'll start with my most-frequented playlist:
Tumblr media
[Spotify] Somewhere more adjacent to a personal(!) fictionkin playlist, this is so far my longest and most-listened to [Soul Eater] mix. It mostly consists of metalcore and alt metal, with tonal themes of turmoil and chaos, but there are a couple curve-ball tracks to keep you on your toes (mostly of which came from recommendations of other people ^^;). I like to "smart shuffle" this list to find new alt bands. Word of warning that there's all kind of provocative unreality narratives throughout this playlist, that's just how it goes (my logic is a sort of comfort in discomfort). SHUFFLE IT!
Track highlight: "CANVAS" by AVRALIZE (rose, if you're reading this. hi. 📯)
Tumblr media
[Spotify] WAAAHHHH While not one of my more-frequented listens, I've really enjoyed putting this one together over the past year. Songs of heartbreaking, "Will they? Won't they?" I've tried to remain true to alternative genres for the sake of consistent character tone, but there are streaks of teasing whimsy as per the dynamic of our calamity duo ^^
Track highlight: "The Void" by Spiritbox
Tumblr media
[Spotify] One of my first Soul Eater playlists, I was really dissatisfied with other public Spirit-oriented playlists I had found. Semi-inspired by fan-made playlists for Tamaki Suoh of "Ouran High School Host Club," I love putting this one on if I'm feeling prideful and femme, hahaha. I revel in the occasional dirtiness sprinkled throughout this one and I plan to add more eventually, heh.
Track highlight: "Love Taste" by Moe Shop (ZOEY U KNO I HAD TO)
Tumblr media
[Spotify] Alright, I'll admit this one is currently an ambitious mess. I've kind of just been passively adding onto this as I find music I think Stein might be interested in. I'm swayed to think he is a lyric-oriented person until a genre bends into avant garde (as I currently quite literally have it opening with a new-era Of Montreal song, WOOF). Every time I think about this playlist or move to listen to Tool or Radiohead I am reminded I really need to clean this one up. I'm an avid believer Stein would like Tool, lol. This one nears close to a similar-enough idea to a following playlist, "Franken's Static Calm." Ideally, this list will become very long in the future as it's supposed to be a pretend library of albums and artists, not necessarily individual tracks.
Track highlight: "Cardium" by Trigg & Gusset
Tumblr media
[Spotify] Although very obviously a WIP at the moment, I'm including this playlist because I could have sworn I've extensively worked on it already (knowing me, I've probably made a Soul Eater playlist under a non-specific title, I have a terrible habit of doing that). This one is particularly in no specific order right now; I intend to include a lot more music parallel to the canon score including that of acid jazz, as cleverly and observantly curated in "soul eater vibes" by sacccstry. (WHICH IS A FANTASTIC PLAYLIST I highly recommend; I put it on in the car when I'm driving friends around for the viiibes) Currently, this playlist is majority made up of electronic call-to-arms. :)
Track highlight: "Killing Giants" by Puppet
Tumblr media
[Spotify] OKAY WAIT HEAR ME OUT HOLD ON WAIT NO-- Essentially Soul's iPod, this is (and will continue to be) a disaster mess. I just think Soul likes it all. I think he has his favourite genres in eastern music, underground surfpunk, and acid jazz, I think he picks up tidbits of different songs by different artists from friends, I think he's the guy who can name random tracks from Bollywood films out of nowhere (cough this might be me I'm describing). I find Soul to seek complexity in easy-listening, and vise versa. ...Also to say that every time I hear Nirvana these days, I'm thinking about Soul Eater Evans ^^;; This playlist is a fustercluck right now, but I think a keen ear for music and en eye for the character will understand where I'm going with this one.
Track highlight: "Trick of the Light" by CIVIC (which. woof. I've seen CIVIC, El Khat, and Stonefield all in concert and is where my Soul-specific inspiration and intention derives from)
Tumblr media
[Spotify] I'll make an attempt at justifying this one: It's simply that I get really dissatisfied by the generalization that Stein is nothing more than an edgelord reduced to cartoony theatrics, ones that depict him as inherently self-loathing while simultaneously and paradoxically prideful. ...This being said, I am guilty of frothing over edgy angst themes often found in heavy alternative music. As I add onto this playlist, it is mostly of tone, generally catering to a sort of juvenile taste of edge, and I might even begin to include classic emo genres.(Don't get it misconstrued: I love it all. /gen) Think the grunge side of Warped Tour.
Track highlight: "Gauze" by Deftones
Tumblr media
[Spotify] Currently closely adjacent and overlapping to the WIP that is "Franken's iPod," this is one I am trying to keep to it's more calming paces. Somewhere in between a rainy night and [eventually to include] ambiance, I started this one to have something to put on in the background. Eventually it will have more melodic noise and ambient soundscape like that of The Black Dog and Aphex Twin and Yellow Swans, but as for now it is a major WIP that I wouldn't mind folks taking a peek into. (...Also "Ultraviolet" by Spiritbox is in here because for some reason it provokes in my mind's eye that of younger Stein having a quiet moment of peace to himself. I don't know why.) In this vein of reason, I'd love to make a Stein-oriented harsh noise playlist sometime.
Track highlight: "Cup Noodle" by The Black Dog
Tumblr media
[Spotify] A guilty-pleasure playlist, this is a short list of songs I've found either lyrically or tonally fit Stein, but, distinctly, not both. I can be particular like that.
Track highlight: "Wet Specimen" by SWEET SPINE
Although a long list, I still have so many other SE/FF playlists as their time comes. I constantly have my feelers out for new music and soundscapes, other work in progresses to include Stein/Justin, fanfic playlists (of my own and for others), and one specifically for Black Star which currently only has "When I Grow Up" by NF on it at the moment ^^;
ANYWAYS ENJOY ENJOY I can't continue sitting on these, GO FORTH AND EXPLORE!
a bonus secret-not-so-secret playlist, heh -> "you're one sadistic man"

1990s Drum n Bass Playlist
Back to the Sunday night electronic playlist-posting mines for the next good while. This week I've got a little update to my 90s drum n bass playlist, with something that's very dark and something that's much, much lighter.
The dark one comes courtesy of a guy from the UK called Ambush, whose career only consisted of a couple 12-inches and an album between '96 and '98, and is not to be confused with *The Ambush,* which is an alias of German electronic music legend Oliver Lieb. Ambush made his debut with a 12-inch called Gain on Possible Records, a dark dnb label that was founded by Mick Harris, who was the former drummer in famed death metal band Napalm Death.
Taking up the A-side on Gain is a tune called "Tracking," which would later find its way onto a Possible double-disc comp called Sonics Everywhere in 1997. "Tracking" is this steadily burrowing piece of filthy subterranean grime, with this constant no-give snare hitting on every other beat while a simply demonic, distorted sub-bassline rumbles mercilessly beneath it 😈; potential theme music for the single-most evil entity in the universe. Only has ~1,100 plays on Spotify.
And for the yang to "Tracking"'s Yin, we have something pretty dang unique. UK future jazz-funk band RSL are not known for making drum n bass, but it appears that, three years prior to their debut release, they first appeared on a South African compilation in 1998 called ReRooted: Beatz From Da Ground Up, with "Elungelo." This is a song that appears to be sampling soulful traditional African folk vocals and then pairs them with beats—first, a nice and chill-grooved, bare-bones trip hop one, and then a sudden shift to dnb. And to be honest, I kinda dig the trip-hoppy portions more on this one, but if something has a considerable amount of drum n bass on it, then it automatically gets categorized as a dnb tune; those are just the rules. Around 9,100 plays.
Ambush - "Tracking" RSL - "Elungelo"
And for the YouTube version of this update, I was able to add those two songs to it too, but I also added another one that can't be found on Spotify as well. And this is another dark one, from a master of those dark dnb arts himself, Technical Itch. In '98, this Birmingham, UK native applied his craft with a remix of Manchester, UK act Perfect Combination's "Remember." Scratchy and blown-out snares, wormy bass squelching, and an occasional eerie synth to remind you where you are, which is a place that you really need to escape from, pronto 😰. This remix has appeared on a double-12-inch called Partisan Volume One, one of the first releases in the catalog of Partisan, an ultimately short-lived label that was launched after a group of staffers acrimoniously split from dnb juggernaut Moving Shadow. Song has a little over 4,800 plays on YouTube across a few different uploads.
Perfect Combination - "Remember (Technical Itch Remix)"
And this playlist is on YouTube Music too.
So this update now brings us to 13 songs that total 84 minutes on Spotify, but over on YouTube, we're now at 30 songs that total 191 minutes! There's just so much more great, obscure 90s dnb in that YouTube one, including a handful of cuts from a compilation that's not even listed on Discogs called Now What Kind of Music Do You Call That?
And if you want something shorter, I've also got a couple dnb playlists that are specific to a certain year from the 1990s:
1997 Drum n Bass: YouTube / YouTube Music 1998 Drum n Bass: YouTube / YouTube Music
Next week, some breakbeat!
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!
Like what you hear? Follow me on Spotify and YouTube for more cool playlists and uploads!

Pick a Song From a Bad Description -- Where the Girls Are
Pick a song based on one of my bad descriptions! You do not need to recognize any of these songs (although there are, as always, band names and random lyrics and breadcrumbs mixed in). Just pick whichever description sounds most appealing, or funniest, or anagrams out to something clever, or however you make your random decisions. At the end of the poll, I will put the songs into a playlist, from the song with the lowest number of votes to the song with the highest number of votes, and share the playlist (plus links to each individual song).
And yes, this one is themed around bands that consist primarily or exclusively of female musicians. Because I've been wanting to do that for a while, and that's why.
(But you do want to get into this even if that's not necessarily a priority for you, because there's some tunes in this list. I always find you bangers, but there's some extra bangin' in this one.
Anyway, vote! Reblog! Have fun! I'll see you in space with my cat. Or next week, whichever.

Hiii hello I would love to hear your 2000s outsider’s au thoughts on the shepard’s taste in music as well as Byron, mark and Cathy if that’s not too much, please I’ve been rotating your hc in my head after seeing it. Johnny liking heavy metal is such a fascinating niche that I’m 100% on board with.
YAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYYAYY HIIIII HIMENO!!! Welcome to the hell hole. Johnny being a metal head (music-wise, not culture-wise) is something I love and I must preach it to whoever will listen.
Okay so. You have walked into my Evil Autism Trap. I will have to keep this a bit shorter because I’m working on a paper + moving (not yay), but I will come back to this later with more stuff!
Shepards
Tim: he’ll listen to whatever’s on the rock radio station, but he’s got a soft spot for nu metal + metalcore. Seether, Ill Niño, Rage Against the Machine, and Linkin Park are most emblematic of his tastes. Dally makes fun of him for having more “contemporary” tastes, probably calls him ‘emo’ despite Tim very much not being emo.
Curly: classic 80s punk, both coasts. He doesn’t give a shit about the politics (ironically), he just likes fast-paced stuff and whatever allows him to punch people in the face. He’s okay with metal, digs some 90s rap (so long as it’s fast-paced), and abhors Angela’s music. He tolerates Pony’s tastes since there is at least some overlap.
Angela: 90s/early 2000s “trashy” pop, a la Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani, and sometimes jazz-influenced artists like Blu Cantrell and Alicia Keys. No Doubt and P!NK are more rock-flavored than her usual tastes, but she digs it. She HATES Avril Lavigne though, thinks she’s for middle-class girls who want to be edgy.
Etc.
Bryon: he’s not truly a greaser, so he doesn’t really hate contemporary music as much as most greasers do. The Killers, All-American Rejects, and I Monster (their 2005 album) all show his personality pretty well I think. He likes a lot of male-oriented pop rock.
Mark: dislikes labels of any kind but in general, he digs post-punk and some new wave (mainly Oingo Boingo). Sonic Youth, R.E.M., Matchbox Twenty, whatever the fuck he wants. He even likes the Beatles on rare occasion and fucking top 100 songs. Wildly eclectic, down to try anything at least once.
Cathy: almost the inverse of Angela’s, Cathy loves the Goo Goo Dolls, Hole, K’s Choice, some of Kelly Clarkson’s discography, and occasional Paramore songs. She also got into Joan Baez and Sinéad O’Connor when living with her aunt. She likes Bryon’s taste and her own preferences compliment his, since his is largely male-oriented versus her more female-based bands.
I have a fixation on this AU at the moment so whatever questions you got I will try to answer. I also need to make playlists for Curly and Bryon (Tim has one, it’s just private). Yay.

Hi! I recently found your blog due to your (Don't) Open Your Eyes fic, and quickly fell in love with your babies. It was like finding a treasure cove! So, I do apologize for the like spam.
For an ask, what types/genres of music would the Clergy members be into? I always imagine Santi to be into Lady Gaga, and just into 2000's Pop in general.
I hope you have a good day :). Thank you for all that you write.
[No no, it's quite fine, "like spams" don't bother me in the slightest, I pay little attention to that. Glad you're having fun! <:7]
Oh God this question. It's like asking me if I have voice claims. I don't, very few. Forgive me for the short answer, but I'll never settle on music genres.
General types of music staff listens to
Patches: Metal. Hardcore metal. Sometimes the trashiest metal too.
Gallon: Anything in French or Spanish, weird tastes.
Morell: Country, sometimes soft rock.
Grimbly: 2000s pop, Slayyyter-tier music.
Santi: Lady Gaga sure, but he's mostly a sucker for cheesy, kinda sappy love songs.
Nebul: Witch house, probably some type of vaporwave.
Fank-e: Anything ranging from weirdcore to breakcore, speedcore, 90's happy hardcore, "stuck in ___" tier compilations.
Belo: Anything involving piano. Likes classical or orchestras.
Vinnel: Melanie Martinez (older works), Nicole Dollanganger.
Sybastian: Doesn't listen to music in general, will take anything except rock. Soft jazz makes him fall asleep sometimes.
Krulu: Needs very specific types of "music", can't settle on a genre nor does he like any, may humor playlists that have soothing effects, to the tune of "songs for an empty world" and such.

loving your posts, especially your music posts! one of my partners is getting me into Gravity Falls so I’m excited to see your fic when you’re done with it (godspeed 🙏🏻)
I’ve been putting playlists for characters togeyher and always felt like something was missing, ao your post about how to avoid making it sound like your taste was really helpful.
All that said, I’ve been doing research, and I came across a…category? Subgenre? idk it seems to cross a lot of genres - whatever, called “murder ballads”. Are there any characters you’ve made playlists for that murder ballads would fall on? (There’s a wiki page with a list of 132 of ‘em, the ones I’m familiar with are the country murder ballads like Goodbye Earl, Independence Day [by Martina McBride], and Two Black Cadillacs, but there’s songs with different parent genres on there like metal, folk, pop, rock, and medieval.)
"Murder ballad" is like, "love song". It describes the subject matter but not the style of the song itself. They tend to gravitate toward certain genres but it's not a genre-specific label.
Outside Gravity Falls, i've put murder ballads on Alastor—1920s jazz murder ballads, and EARLY early folk murder ballads (he had to listen to SOMETHING as a kid before he was old enough to go watch jazz bands, and dude's morbid).
Inside Gravity Falls, I see old Appalachian murder ballads for Fiddleford (but he's a character i haven't sufficiently fleshed out a playlist for yet, just haven't made the time; Appalachian murder ballads are a genre I've specifically earmarked to dig into for him tho). My Fidds playlist currently has a bluegrass cover of "In The Pines" (better known as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"—you might know the Nirvana or Lead Belly version), although I wanna find a different cover of that song because the specific one I added to the playlist took out the actual murder lyrics lmfao.
For a while I had a few 1950s murder ballads on Stan's playlist—Mack The Knife, Stagger Lee, Folsom Prison Blues—but I've taken most of them off because uh... i got tired of listening to them sdflkfh. I need to find fresh ones to put on that I'm not yet tired of. In general, for Stan I try to steer toward 1950s songs—preferably rock n roll—about crime, prisons, murder.
If you have spotify, I recommend the podcast Murder Ballads (unfortunately a spotify exclusive, so that's the only way to listen to it). It's only six episodes but it goes over the history of murder ballads AND gives several covers of each featured song across genres/years

🚨 AIR HORN AIR HORN 🚨
i have a special interest in music
my name is alicia, and i’m 26 years old
but really all you need to know is the first thing
🎹 what you’ll find here 🎹
i always have songs to rec and playlists to share. i get hooked on different genres and artists every few months, and consume them in a way comparable to substance abuse in both frequency and fervor
love me some musical analysis. what parallels can we pick out? why is this lyric important? how does this song fit into the album? what key is it in and why? is this normal for the artist or are they pushing out of their comfort zone? the people want to know
this is definitely a safe place for parasocial relationship victims. show me your favorite artist’s lore and that photo shoot they were in last week. tell me why you think blorbo’s current lover is going to break up with them resulting in the album of your dreams. that shit is delicious
roll call for band nerds and orch dorks! i play cello and guitar, and i haven’t stopped singing a tune since i was a wee wee lad. lets do music theory, lets trade sheet music, lets share talent, babes
🎻 tags to check out 🎻
#listen for recs. related tags: #r&b, #rock, #hip hop, #metal, #jazz, #country, #edm, #classical, #pop
#lets discuss for those juicy analytics and opinions. related tags: #parallels, #lyrics, #musicality, #symbolism
#lore for all that trashy celebrity shit. related tags: #trivia, #tea
#theory for the science behind the sound. related tags: #keys, #physics
#mesharp when im just yappin’ or #tears for anything that makes me feral
#stuck for shit thats stuck in my head and i want it out cause its starting to piss me off
#YOOO for talent, #vocal or #intrumental
warning: i have great media literacy and know how pick my battles when listening to problematic artists. i don’t separate the artist from the art, but i can also hold space for the lyrics of defying gravity contradictory opinions simultaneously. for example: yes, i like taylor swift. her songs are fun to play and sing because she uses simple chords and witty lyrics, which is something i love to find in an artist, but also she is controversially rich and hurting the planet, so i avoid giving her my money. its that simple 👍🏽

which Daniel playlists? On spotify?
Yes!! a super kind user on Spotify has compiled his THREE x 3 playlists on this playlist here!
I also v much dig the four playlists from this 2016 Red Bull article here which are also on Spotify!
music is one of my passions ✨💖🎶🌌✨ so I think that's one of the reasons I fell so hard for Daniel!! We have a lot of overlapping tastes in artists it seems!! I v much appreciate his wide taste in artists and genres (an excellent mix imo of pop, metal, hip-hop, rock, rap, and more!!) and newer releases + classics + nostalgic throwbacks that take me back to, like, listening to Warped Tour compilations in high school or rummaging thru my folks' CD collection as a kid 🥹💞🎵✨ I'm always on the search for new music, so I'm thankful to get into new artists I've not heard before (Parkway Drive!!) and feel so much over shared sentimental tunes (Sweetness!!)
I am a big last.fm fan too, so I've been keeping my music stats since 2014!! 😵‍💫 highly recommend if you like data!! Having higher numbers doesn't equal better (no need to reduce the art of music to purely numbers of course!) but it is fun to see I've listened to like 14k artists or I have 400 plays on Lil Uzi Vert vs the World or my top genre last week was smooth jazz 😎🎷🫧 if you have a discord server, you can get like lastfmbot or Chuu that have a ton of cool commands like a map of all artists' countries (I'm up to 153!!) or your top artists for the month etc etc 🎶💫
anyways omg this got long, as usual!!! 🙏🙂‍↕️ there are certainly more playlists out there, too!! The Red Bull Spotify account has some I've not dived into yet, and I know folks who have been keeping up much longer than me know way more!! 🎶☀️💞 v thankful for all the knowledge and jams shared!! 💖💖 and excited to hear if he shares any recent faves if he wants! I'm working on my Fall running playlist (I make one every season!!) so I'll be taking Daniel inspo for some jogging bangers 🔥🎵🌄
