#I hate Western fandoms so much

Why is it that Western fans are so fucking miserable and feel the need to lie and spread misinformation without providing any evidence to back up their claims? This is such a bullshit claim not based on reality. Because this is NOT what I've seen when it comes to how the series is viewed in Japan. It's actually really popular. Their ratings are just fine, they're not crying for help at all. Why do people feel the need to lie when it's so easy to prove them wrong?
I have been posting Peach-Pit news for 10+ years and I saw first hand the reactions from Japanese fans when the reprints were first announced back in 2021. The first two volumes were released on March 1st, 2021. They sold out so fast they had to reprint them. And then they had to reprint them AGAIN in April 2021.
I recently bought another set of the reprints, let's look at the reprint information on the last page:
Volume 1 was reprinted 6 times, most recently on November 21st, 2024.
Volume 2 was reprinted 5 times, most recently on July 17th, 2024.
Volume 3 was reprinted 5 times, most recently on November 21st, 2024.
Volume 4 was reprinted 5 times, most recently on November 21st, 2024.
Volume 5 was reprinted 5 times, most recently on November 21st, 2024.
Volume 6 was reprinted 4 times, most recently on July 17th, 2024.
...according to the copies I have. My volume 2 and 6 do have the obis around the cover advertising the sequel, so it makes sense that those came from the July 2024 reprints. Those volumes were also most likely reprinted in November 2024 with the others, Animate just sent me a mix and I didn't get the newest version of those.
As for the first volume of Jewel Joker, the regular and special editions were released on February 13th, 2025. They announced a reprint of both editions 4 days later on February 17th, 2025. That is the OPPOSITE of a cry for help. That means the series is doing really well, because they have to keep reprinting the volumes. And it's highly likely it's going to keep getting special treatment just like the original series did, with the rest of the volumes getting a regular AND special edition.
The September 2024 Issue of Nakayoshi, which included the first chapter of Jewel Joker, sold out really fast. Animate cancelled my order for the issue because they ran out, even though I had pre-ordered it. Third party sellers on Amazon Japan were selling the issues for a much higher price because everyone wanted the issue and furoku. Nakayoshi had to offer the September 2024 Issue for free digitally for a limited time so people could actually read it.
Since the first chapter, it has been featured on the cover of Nakayoshi 5 times, and has had 4 color title pages. Each title page has the words 大人気 (very popular) on it. There are only 8 chapters so far and it's already so popular. Every month when a new issue comes out and Nakayoshi's X account makes a post for every manga that is in the issue that particular month, Shugo Chara!'s posts always have the highest likes and views.
There has been a constant, nonstop stream of merchandise, goods, popup shops, and collaboration cafes since the reprints came out in 2021. The Animate cafe collaboration back in March was huge. The X post announcing it has 3 millions views and 26k likes. When mail order for the goods was made available, some of the goods were sold out within 2 hours! Amu's acrylic stand sold out first, by the way. Ikuto's acrylic stand sold out the next day.
That is NOT a series struggling with ratings. With or without Ikuto, the series was doing just fine. It's probably the most popular series in Nakayoshi right now. Because Japanese fans actually like the series for the plot too, not just the pretty boys. There are a lot of Japanese fans that are huge fans of the female characters as well.
It was inevitable that Ikuto was going to come back sooner or later because he's one of the main characters and also Amu's love interest. They're the main canon couple. You wouldn't have Sailor Moon without Mamoru or Cardcaptor Sakura without Syaoran. The love interest HAS to be there. Even though romance is not the main point in these manga (the actual plot is) these boys are still there. They HAVE to be there.
The merchandise and other goods have made it very obvious that Amuto is absolutely canon at this point. There are Cocollabo and Animate goods where it's just the two of them, and Palcy has been advertising their relationship as "fated to be attracted to each other". This is an official Kodansha app. I've also seen things on Peach-Pit's pixiv Fanbox that just make it more obvious too, I just can't share them because they're behind a paywall and they said not to talk about pixiv Fanbox contents outside of pixiv. They're only okay with sharing articles that are listed as "All Users". Which means you can view the articles without paying for a plan and without having a pixiv account.
Honestly, the only people who are salty about Ikuto's return are probably Tadamu fans that are still in denial about Amuto being canon. That's the simplest answer. It has absolutely nothing to do with ratings. They don't like Ikuto so they're annoyed he's back, and they're just pretending it's some other reason because they're dishonest. I'd respect them more if they just told the truth.
The Asian fandoms (I mainly lurk among Japanese, Korean, and Chinese fans) are all in a euphoric haze that they've been in since the Nakayoshi cover was first revealed, and when chapter 8 came out on Thursday they were freaking out all day. One fan described it as a "lethal dose of Amuto". lol The Japanese fandom is overjoyed with chapter 8, and thankfully their opinion is the only one that matters because they're the ones actually buying the issues and volumes as well as going to popup shops and collaboration cafes. It doesn't matter what Western fans think, because apart from a few people like myself and some others, most of them aren't supporting the series in any way. I buy direct from the source using Buyee and Tenso.
There's a reason Amu and Ikuto are ALWAYS featured in every new set of illustrations Peach-Pit releases. They're always there, and the rest of the characters chosen are usually a mix of Tadase, Utau, and/or Nadeshiko/Nagihiko. I think Peach-Pit is just really happy that they can finally go all in on Amuto and they wanted to advertise it as much as they could. That's why the cover was released a week early, why they've been so giddy talking about the chapter. As I said before, they've said things on their pixiv Fanbox that have confirmed some of my suspicions. Also the notes in the artbooks:

万里: グランドフィナーレですね. 白い服2人とブーケ…, というのは最初から決まってました. 12巻でバージョンちがいを描きましたよ. Banri: It’s the grand finale. Two people wearing white clothes and a bouquet… that was decided from the beginning. The Volume 12 version is drawn differently.
This was canon since day 1. It's what they've always wanted to do, and they're so happy that they can finally do it.
Also, X is NOT a "hellspace", it is an extremely effective social media platform. Another ignorant opinion not based on reality. I know I'm dealing with literal children when you people feel the need to insert politics into a hobby discussion where it is not needed, wanted, or in any way relevant to the conversation. A smart entrepreneur will use every social media platform they can to advertise themselves. It's common sense. And today X is THE best place to do it.
When the series was first serialized in Nakayoshi, social media - especially X - was not as widespread as it is today. If you wanted to see comments by the manga artists, you were limited to comments they made in the issues, comments in the published volumes, or you tracked down their personal website and hoped it had a blog section (Peach-Pit's old website did). They occasionally had autograph sessions, and Peach-Pit also replies to fan letters and they send postcards out during summer and winter. Advertising each series was also limited, probably to just each magazine's websites, the manga artist's blog, and bookstores like Animate.
Now the publishing companies and magazines all have an X account, and the manga artists being published in the magazine have one as well. Peach-Pit only created their X in 2011, and Nakayoshi created theirs in 2014. That was after SC! ended in 2010. Some also have a pixiv Fanbox.
Social media makes it much easier to advertise each series, and you'd be stupid not to. You couldn't do this before and now you can, so you should absolutely use this to your advantage. Their goal is to get more readers and to make money, and I don't fault them for that. They need money in order to live. I thought this stupid website supported artists? Of course SC! has an easier time since it already has an established fanbase (the same could also be said of CCS Clear Card when it was running in Nakayoshi).
Speaking of CCS, I don't think it was a coincidence that the issue announcing SC!'s sequel (the November 2023 Issue) came two issues before CCS Clear Card ended (the January 2024 Issue). I believe they did this on purpose. Their cash cow was ending and they needed to make sure people stuck around for the next cash cow, so they wanted CCS readers to see the news about SC!'s sequel. Because if anyone is desperate for ratings, it isn't Peach-Pit - it's Nakayoshi.
Recent issues of Nakayoshi are very thin, nothing like the thick phone book-like issues I have from 2006 during SC!'s first serialization. I think the magazine is struggling, which is why they keep giving sequels to their most popular classic manga to bring back old readers. In a list of Japanese manga magazines by circulation as of June 2023, Ciao is #10, Ribon is #12, and Nakayoshi is #23. CCS Clear Card would later end in the January 2024 Issue which was released on December 1st, 2023. I'm really interested to see the current numbers and how SC!'s sequel might have effected the amount of copies they printed. Clearly they didn't print enough copies of the September 2024 Issue which had the first chapter of Jewel Joker in it. Did they fix this by making sure to print more copies? Doesn't look like it, because the May 2025 Issue appears to be sold out in some stores already. Animate's online store says they only have a few left.
In 2019, Nakayoshi published an artbook to celebrate their 65th anniversary. The manga artists were listed in order of publication - with Peach-Pit being listed last. An indirect admission by Nakayoshi that SC! was one of the last good manga to run in the magazine and there hadn't been any new hits between SC! ending in 2010 and 2019 when the artbook was published. Not even Ema Tooyama was featured in the artbook, and she's had numerous Nakayoshi manga throughout the years.
It's Nakayoshi's 70th anniversary this year and they've barely celebrated it. They released a card set furoku in the January 2025 Issue featuring art from popular manga, but that's about it. No word about any special campaigns or exhibitions. Will they release another artbook just like that one, to include popular manga from 2019 to 2025? I wish they would do something.
Alright, this is long enough. Leave it to the miserable Western fandom to ruin the good mood I've been in since chapter 8 came out. I'm going back to Japanese X, they're not fucking miserable.

everytime someone fetishizes rochu instead of making it the most dramatic thing of all time an angel loses its wings. how can you talk about rochu without talking about first contact during the imperial era. how can you talk about them and not go through how their dynamic during the century of humiliation suddenly changed in the 1920s. how can you talk about them without talking about comintern business and switching support between the kmt and the cpc. how can you talk about them without talking ww2. how can you talk about them without the short honeymoon phase after liberation in 1949. HOW CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THEM WITHOUT TALKING ABOUT THE SINO-SOVIET SPLIT. the drama. the politics. the historical intrigue. and you're telling me people ship rochu because "small delicate asian boy x big strong slavic man uwu" ? come on
#hetalia#rochu#hetalia discourse#the whole fetishization thing is why i've met quite a few people in western fandom who fucking hate rochu#which is totally fair#if i started seeing rochu while actively participating in the fandom i don't think i would like it very much#and i feel like i post more homocommunist ruspru on here? more to expound on homocommunist history#the history is far more well documented in the gdr#the ussr did legalize homosexuality early and then recriminalize it (error) but i haven't seen much from that early legalization period#and then in the new china it's a little more recent#but also like the rochu content is so fetishizey it's hard to participate in it unless it's like. chinese#the ruspru content at least presents them as equals#again the communist era stuff in ruspru is not great. but at least neither of them are reduced to an object#except for my goat mourning by eternaldust which presents china as like a full nuanced character and consensual prurus.... thank you my goat

All that! For what it's worth, here's my two cents: it also depends on what part of Star Wars you're talking about. The main movies can have a very different feel and end goal in comparison to the spinoff TV shows (and Rogue One, which deals with some significantly heavier war themes). Even the prequels, originals, and sequels are tonally diverse. (The originals are commonly regarded as the best. Also, they're technically the fourth through sixth films, but start with them anyway. If you're going to watch any of the films, make it those.)
The shows vary. Some are more light-hearted than others, and they're directed at different audiences. They cover different topics (Clone Wars is war-focused and talks about political corruption, The Mandalorian is a space western, Rebels is grassroots rebellion against fascist tyranny, etc.). The 3D-animated Clone Wars is not the same as The Mandalorian, for example. I haven't been keeping up with the latest shows (Ahsoka and Andor and the recent spinoffs/extensions of Clone Wars), but I've heard that Andor is great and does some solid intellectual/political work.
It can be a big thing to get into if you want, but in my experience it's not too closely woven. The live-action films don't require any knowledge of the TV shows. You could easily watch the original movies and nothing else. While the TV shows make references to each other, most of them can be watched as standalones. You can decide what you want to watch and forgo everything else.
I know fuck all about Doctor Who and Dune, and I'm not experienced with most of Star Trek, but I'm close to finishing TOS and it struck me as harder sci-fi with a significantly greater focus on societal critique. Star Wars is solidly space opera. Thematically (I think that's the right term?) it's fantasy, just with the appearance and packaging of sci-fi. Imo you can't make an apples-to-apples comparison between Star Trek and Star Wars, because they're basically different genres.
TL;DR, it depends on what you want out of it. If you just want the pop culture references, the original trilogy covers the overwhelming majority of that. If you want a bigger universe to explore, it does fulfill that reasonably well. Vibe-wise, it is usually primarily fantasy themed in a sci-fi setting. So. Make of that what you will?
Should I watch Star wars? It feels like a whole big thing to get into.. Like I love star trek and doctor who and silly things like that but star wars feels like preaching for lack of a better word, same reason why I can't get into dune- based on what I've learnt about the two franchises through osmosis from Tumblr
Star Wars is neither as intellectual or as political as Star Trek, nor as convoluted and complex as Dune. It is Quasi-Buddhist Space Wizards versus Space Nazis. This is not a condemnation. Not everything needs to be everything. They’re brilliantly executed even from just a design perspective and the depth of character and world building was miles ahead of others of its genre at original time of release. And frankly even if they were shit I’d recommend a watch for the incredible practical effects alone
(Downside of watching Star Wars: you would no longer be able to enjoy the reactions of people as they find out you’ve never seen Star Wars.)
#I was REALLY into Star Wars back in early high school and then a friend briefly pulled me back in a few years ago#I got out of it due to a mix of factors (the sequels were... sure something alright! and I also just wasn't pleased with some storytelling#and characterization decisions for some of the TV stuff. and I got tired of keeping up with everything.)#the fandom can also get pretty toxic; I've gotten the impression that the Star Trek fandom is usually pretty friendly and open#and while most of the Star Wars fandom is fine in my experience it's fairly prone to arguing. the saying that no one hates Star Wars#like Star Wars fans (in a love/hate way) is not untrue#I do really like The Mandalorian for what it's worth. space western plus stoic mercenary accidentally adopting a kid and fumbling#through figuring out how to be a dad is very endearing and entertaining#and you can watch it more or less as a standalone#Pedro Pascal pulls off a masterclass in emoting with just body language (no facial expressions) and tone#I also looooved Rebels when I was younger. dunno how it's held up but if you're into found family it knocks that out of the park#and I found Rogue One to be incredibly compelling. great group of characters#also a pretty diverse cast!#...and not to be that person but. uh. the sequels are... you may be better off not watching them in general#anyway. I'll admit I liked TOS somewhat better than most of Star Wars; I do enjoy societal critique and (for the time period) they handled#diversity and topics of discrimination much better#and... idk it just vibed with me well#but I don't know that I would've gotten that out of it when I was younger! so#anyway yeah#star wars#synapse talks

Actually, you know what? If you support that guy's stance on women/LGBT people/minorities, please unfollow me now.
#chances are you know exactly who i'm talking about#i'm not american but your ideas and trends always end up gaining traction here too#and we are going to face so much *more* hatred now that you've made it 'the norm'#in fact it's already started#i wish it didn't come to that but i'm tired of smiling and trying to be nice to people who think my rights don't matter#some of whom still claim to love us yet always put us last (when they don't hate a large part of who we are)#and since i - like most of us - still have to deal with that in real life this is my space not to pretend#so while this will remain primarily a fandom blog there will be rants here and there#and to be fair#not all of it was caused by the us election but the us election *has* made it worse#now hardly a day goes by that i don't hear a veiled insult about “the left”/“feminists”/“the lgbt crowd”#i'm tired#so so tired#family time used to be peaceful if you avoided those subjects#and if they did broach them it would die down quickly#buying your peace with silence is not ideal but it used to be an option#not anymore#they'll just... start railing unprovoked. apparently we're “a threat to western civilisation”. how do you even respond to that?#i'm too attached to truly hate them for it. but man does it hurt.

Rafayel Rant
My man literally doomed his people for us. If that isn't dedication I don't know what is. He also seems the only (Love interest) that wants mc to actively remember their previous lives, constantly reminding us that we've 'forgotten' something.
And I think it might just be Western bias/stereotypes around men, but I hate how the fandom as whole represents him as a whiny brat when he is so much deeper than that. And yeah he can be annoying sometimes but wouldn't you also be irritated and mopey if the person you love has forgotten about you multiple times after everything you've been through.
Yes he's sassy and yes he's needy and dramatic at times. But he misses you and doesn't know any other way to express it.
Not to mention he's a romantic at heart. If you listen to any of his secret time audios you would know that he really does care about you. Hell, he lied about needing a bodyguard just to get you to be around him more. Even in his recent card [Intertidal Zone] you can see that sweet/caring nature come out. He sings a Lemurian love song to lull you to sleep at your request.
Not to mention he has a dark side.
1. If you look back at his interactions with anyone other than MC. He's only ever (ha) nice to you. Because outside of you Rafayel's kind of an asshole. (Chapter 8 *cough*) Not to mention his underlying hatred for humans
2. He has stalked mc
3. He has murdered and lied to your face about it
4. He's definitely done some criminal work. Did you see how effortlessly he blended in, in chapter 8. Not to mention he has, in his own words, ‘connections' to the underbelly of Linkon
——> You don’t have to like him, but don’t give him unnecessary hate, pls 🙏
Please give our fishy boi some justice. #JusticeforRaf 😔

Summary: Geta's wife is a very reserved, sensitive soul. She doesn't often attend the games, but when she agrees to watch the Gladiators in the colosseum, a bold arrow is aimed at her.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Closing her eyes, (Y/n) tilted her head back until she could feel the bright, midday sun beaming down on her skin. Sometimes it felt like the sun was close enough that she could skim her fingers across the hot flames. With her eyes closed and her head aimed up towards the beacon of light, it felt like the sun was reaching out to her, gliding hot flickering flames across her skin that was beginning to burn deliciously.
Being outside was always preferrable to being indoors. At least, in moments like these, it was preferrable.
When her husband was holding meetings with the Senate and the high families of Rome, (Y/n) preferred not to be around.
It was nothing to do with Geta. If anything, (Y/n) found his demanour and the way he controlled the meetings delightful. He had such a calming presence about him, the way Geta sat during those meetings was so relaxed with one leg crossed over the other and his head inclined to one side and a placid yet interested expression on his pale face. And within a second his demanour could change.
He could take charge of the room, he could make a stand or put his foot down and insist on changes or control what way the situation turned. And he could calm his brother down when Caracella went into one of his rants or one of those exciteable or frustrated moods.
Watching Geta in those moments was something (Y/n) enjoyed and she could never stop herself from smiling and melting in awe of her husband.
It was the rest of the people in the room who (Y/n) couldn't cope with.
The hall in which these meetings took place had high ceilings and thick stone walls and pillars of marble. Everything that was needed to create a horrible echo that vibrated through (Y/n)'s skin and had her quivering on the spot.
Raised voices and screeching echoes didn't bode well with (Y/n). Geta always seemed to be intrigued with how sensitive she was to noises, he liked the fact that she could hear conversations happening in the next room if she found herself focusing on them enough. But he hated how loud events and people could be and how it would upset his wife.
Geta saw the distress it caused his wife when people raised their voices or when laughs and shouts would echo off the walls. Loud clatters would make her shudder and cringe. Yells and the clinking of swords would have her cowering into his side and once, during a brawl, he had seen (Y/n) clasp her hands desperately over her ears to ward away the noise.
To stop his wife from becoming distressed, Geta excused (Y/n) from any all all meetings she didn't want to attend, and he would raise his knife to anyone whop dared question why she wasn't present.
It was one of the things that made (Y/n) love him even more. He made sure she wasn't required to answer to anyone but him.
With a tender smile on her face, (Y/n) opened her eyes and glanced down to the companion by her side.
"Come, Arla." Her fingers skimmed across the top of the dog's head, tangling her fingers into the long strands of golden yellow fur that always reminded (Y/n) of Geta, especially when the sun glimmered down on the fur just right.
Arla had been (Y/n)'s pet since before she married Geta; she had been a present from him.
Much like Caracella had Dondus who seemed to be his best friend and confidont, (Y/n) had Arla.
(Y/n) wasn't like her brother in law, she didn't donne Arla with clothes or hats or a leash, she had no need. Arla never strayed from her side whereas Dondus had a tendency to scuttle about the palace if he wasn't watched carefully. But (Y/n) did think of Arla as her friend. Someone she could be herself around.
Someone who didn't roll their eyes or tut whenever (Y/n) would flinch at loud noises or steer away from people in favour of being in her own company. Arla was a comfort to (Y/n).
She didn't have many people she could be comfortable around or confide in. The only people (Y/n) had were Geta and Caracella, and it was hit and miss whether she could confide in her brother in law, with his tempermental moods. At least when she had Arla, (Y/n) never felt like she was truly alone.
Her sandals glided against the gravel and sand, kicking up flecks as she moved towards the fountain in the centre of the small garden. The palace had many gardens, some hidden within the centre, some dotted around the outskirts. This was a secluded, square opening in between some of the chambers, it didn't really count as a garden when there was nothing growing here to be tended to or shown off.
But there was a lovely marble fountain that (Y/n) found soothing. The water was always quiet yet steady, the trickling sound of the water sprinkling down sounded like the faintest beginning of rain and at this time of day, the sun was as bright as ever.
(Y/n) sat down on the smooth edge of the fountain and crossed one leg over the other. She tilted back until the sound of the water was all she could hear and her hands twitched and her fingertips glided against the soft stone beneath her to hold herself up.
She felt Arla take pride of place, sitting beside her right leg with her head gently resting on (Y/n)'s knee. Her companion was always so eager to simply sit in peace like this, never fussing or barking or becoming restless.
(Y/n) preferred Arla's company to that of any maid in the palace. The servants were kind, most of them, but there was always a stilted edge of conversation. Most didn't speak unless spoken to, and (Y/n) always felt like she had to be careful with what she said around them. Gossip spread like fever in a palace like this.
And it hadn't escaped (Y/n)'s notice that many of the female servants liked to get close to both Emperors; especially Geta. They fawned over him in a way that made (Y/n) feel uneasy. But then again, Geta had eyes for her alone and if anyone else got too close, his patience would soon wear thin and he would snap at them to retreat. There was nothing for (Y/n) to fear in that department.
She sat for a while, listening to the sound of the water behind her and trying to let her mind wander off.
It was nice to be able to walk around without any servants or guards following her. At (Y/n)'s timid request, Geta had ordered the guards not to follow her. They could keep a note of where she was, but because (Y/n) didn't leave the palace- certainly not without Geta- she didn't need to be followed around every moment of the day.
"I thought I would find you here."
That quiet yet striking voice brought (Y/n) out of her thoughts and she tilted her head forward, opening her eyes quickly to see her husband advancing towards her.
His pale face was angled to one side, making the vibrant golden crown sat on his equally bright strands glitter in the sunlight. The brightness contrasted to the pale makeup covering his face and the darkness painted around and especially beneath his eyes.
Sometimes (Y/n) wondered if Geta was an embodiment of what the God of Death may look like. Pale, haunting skin, dark-rimmed eyes that could pierce and reach the soul. A calm demanour, a stern expression and an aura that said he wouldn't bargain with anyone, at any cost.
Something seemed to melt in Geta's eyes when they set on his wife and he advanced towards her with a determination in his movements and his expression.
He perched down on the fountain on (Y/n)'s left side, one hand moving to hold her thigh while he leaned in towards her and attached his lips to her exposed shoulder.
(Y/n) pushed off her hands so she was sitting up rather than reclined back towards the water and her head inclined to the left. She found herself smiling when she buried her nose into Geta's hair as his face stayed tucked into the crook of her neck.
"Did your meeting fare well?" (Y/n) curved her arm around Geta's back when he seemed to lean into her more and she heard the small grunt he let out. She imagined if he wasn't burrowed down into her side like this, he may have rolled his eyes or pulled a gaunt expression.
"As expected. How are you?"
(Y/n) found herself smiling softly and nuzzling her cheek into Geta's hair when his hand moved from her thigh to take her other hand. She uncrossed her legs and set to tapping her sandals softly in the gravel while her hand entwined with Geta's and he finally lifted his head from her shoulder to look at her.
The concern in his eyes was overwhelming. (Y/n) knew anything she said was always taken to heart. If she told him she felt unwell he would be calling for the doctor. If she said she felt the happiest she had ever been Geta would have a beaming smile from ear to ear, and he would strive to do even better. If something was bothering her, she could rest assured it would be at the top of Geta's agenda.
"Much better now you're here." She was fine to wander about the palace on her own, but (Y/n) always felt better when Geta was beside her.
Sometimes it was because she felt like no one would look or dare to speak or mess with her when Geta was by her side. Other times, it was simply because she wanted his company and being parted from him made (Y/n) feel at a loss for what to do with herself.
She found herself focusing on the feeling of his thumb stroking along the back of her hand and she watched the way Geta looked down at their hands before he looked up at her.
"There will be another game tomorrow, I've been told the gladiators are training through the night for tomorrow's event. Will you join us to watch?"
It was soothing how Geta asked (Y/n) rather than gave an order or command. They both knew if he ordered for (Y/n) to join, she would always comply. He was her husband and her Emperor, if he asked (Y/n) to do something she never liked to refuse and whatever Geta asked was never anything that would upset or put (Y/n) at risk or make a fool out of her in any way.
He would never do that.
If (Y/n) didn't want to attend some of the games or events that were held at the colosseum, Geta never forced her to go. He was understanding. He knew the games could be rowdy.
The crowds were unruly and their cheering and screaming and throwing of food or flowers was far too loud and unsettling for (Y/n). The royal box was the best view and secluded from the rest of the colosseum, but it did nothing to change the volume of the games. The gladiators weren't much better, their guttural screams, their roars of triumph or deathly defeat were overwhelming.
And Geta knew (Y/n) didn't like witnessing the massacres of animals and fallen men. She would divert her gaze or tuck her face into his arm to avoid witnessing those things.
"Will you accompany me?" The soft tone to Geta's voice had (Y/n)'s heart fluttering in her chest like a wild bird demanding to be released.
And when he brought their entwined hands up so he could press a delicate kiss to her knuckles, she found herself nodding.
"Of course."
These games were different. This was a course of games set up in the honour of Rome and its Emperors. This was the strongest of gladiators fighting undefeatable odds in the name of sport and honour. This was a celebration and Geta wanted to have his wife there by his side.
He wanted to enjoy the day with her, to have her there with him while the celebrations occured. He didn't like to be parted from her company.
It never sat well with Geta when he attended the games but knew (Y/n) was back at the palace. Knowing she had servants and guards around her wasn't comforting because she was still out of Geta's sight. He couldn't be around her to protect her himself.
"Thank you."
His hand left hers in favour of cupping her chin and tilting her head up in his direction so he could steal a kiss from her lips.
His touch was gentle, so much so that (Y/n) felt like she were touching a mirrage, as if Geta wasn't really there in front of her at all. But she could feel her lips tingling from his touch and how he was stroking his thumb along her chin and the way the end of his nose nudged into hers.
With his head inclined towards hers and their foreheads touching, Geta blocked the sun from (Y/n) which now shone down on his hair and illuminated the golden crown woven into his hair like it was now part of his skin.
(Y/n) brought her hand up to cup the side of Geta's face, smoothing her thumb along his sharp yet deathly pale cheek.
She knew it would be best if she attended the games too. Geta was increadibly understanding and relaxed when it came to (Y/n), he didn't force her to join in the meetings or the rest of the games or attending banquets and entertainment held in their honour at counsellor's homes.
The least (Y/n) could do for Geta was turn up to the games and hang onto his arm. She could show support and show that she was more than happy to be by her husband's side and watch the events thrown in his honour. It was (Y/n)'s place to be beside Geta and it was her duty as his wife to honour him and show support.
That thought made her smile against his lips and she leaned in close until both arms were deadlocked around his neck and their chests were pressed together.
If the crowds and the noise got too much, (Y/n) knew she would have Geta there by her side to calm her down and make sure she was okay. He would keep her safe.
And he wanted to have her there by his side, that was an offer she simply couldn't refuse.
***
A shiver tore down (Y/n)'s spine as they approached closer and closer to the viewing box of the colosseum.
She could hear the crowds from the carriage on their way from the palace. She could hear their shouts and applause as they entered the colosseum and made their ascent through the dark corridors. Anxiety bubbled up inside of her and seemed to radiate off of her in waves, for she felt the way Geta stepped closer to her side.
Both her hands were latched around Geta's arm and she was close enough now that they were almost moulded into one being. But the feeling of his lips pressing down against her temple was soothing.
Caracella was the most eager out of the three of them. He walked with a skip in his step and a broad, slightly unhinged smile on his face. He had left Dondus back at the palace for now, he wanted his full attention to be on the blood and gore that would soon be littering the scene ahead of them.
Walking towards the box made (Y/n) feel like they were ascending towards Heaven. The sun was so bright she could scarcely see and relied on Geta to steer them through the doors towards their seats.
As always when (Y/n) joined to view the games, there was another seat set out for her.
Both Emperors ruled together, one was no more in charge than the other. But when Geta married (Y/n), she then gained as much power and status as them. The three of them would sit at the very front of the box which was reserved for the Emperors and the most highest of counsellors and senates.
Three chairs which were almost as elegant as thrones were lined together, painted beautiful shades of berry blue with hints of grey and silver. And the intricately carved backs of the chairs were adoned with carved eagles and painted the most beautiful shade of gold.
They sat as they usually would when they were attending public events like these. (Y/n) in the centre with Geta on her left, and Caracella on her right.
As soon as they were sat down, (Y/n) began smoothing her hands along her crystal white dress that fanned out towards her ankles and hung on her shoulders with thin straps and golden hoops. She picked this dress because she knew it was one of Geta's favourites. It left her shoulders exposed as the sleeves began part way down her arms. Both sleeves were made of a soft see through silk that hung from (Y/n)'s arms like capes.
There were ruffles sewn into the centre of the dress that was low cut, leaving her chest exposed to his adoring eyes. And the golden belt around her middle was a symbol for Geta's golden hair and the crown sat on top of his head.
"Okay?" Geta's voice was hushed and murmured against the shell of (Y/n)'s ear as he leaned over the armrest to lean on her chair. Each chair was pressed so close together that the arm rests were almost overlapping, but it wasn't enough for Geta. He was always so desperate to reach out and drag his wife onto his lap and share one chair with her.
"Hm, I'm okay." (Y/n) nodded and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek which seemed to ignite his smile and send his mood flaring higher than before.
She watched with a tender smile as her husband and brother in law stood up to give their speech and announce that today's games could begin.
Once Geta sat back down, he crossed one leg over the other and rested his left elbow on the arm of the chair. But his head and body inclined to the right towards his wife; he would always gravitate towards her.
He tangled his right hand with (Y/n)'s, bringing her hand close enough so he could press a kiss to her knuckles before he stretched his arm over to rest their hands on her lap. He knew (Y/n) would want to fiddle with the rings that adorned his fingers, a habit that would give her something to focus on and keep her calm when the crowds and the commotion started to get overpowering.
When the crowd roared as the first announcement bellowed out, Geta felt the way (Y/n) shuddered at his side.
Uncertainty cast in his eyes that immediately overlooked his wife. He squeezed her hand and leaned a little closer when (Y/n) turned in his direction. Her free hand clutched at his arm and she laid her cheek on his shoulder, subtly muffling one ear against his shoulder to block out the volume of their subjects.
(Y/n) found herself staring at Geta's robes every now and then. He and Caracella usually adorned golden robes. Gold was the colour of splendor and money and it matched their vibrant hair and contrasted to their naturally pale skin.
She liked the mix of red and gold on his robes, it stood out and made a lot of eyes divert to him.
"The gladiators, led by the barbarian!"
Geta kept his hand deadlocked in (Y/n)'s, but he lowered his leg back down and leaned forward in his seat to lean over the edge of the balcony. He wanted to watch the inferior ship sail out into the centre of the colosseum that had been flooded with salt water and filled with the deadliest of sea animals.
When the second ship entered the water and the game officially began, (Y/n) leaned forward a little to watch the entrance.
She found herself observing the colour of the water more than the ships that were slowly turning to face one another. When she glanced to her right, she found Caracella with a bright smile on his red lips and his hands were twitching as he sat forward and bashed his fists down on the arms of his seat in eagerness.
Blood and gore was something both Emperors delighted in whereas (Y/n) wasn't so fond. A fight, sure, she could witness and take heed in. But a fight to the death was a little extreme, it seemed like such a waste unless the person was a traitor or condemned to death.
The roaring of the crowds made (Y/n) sink back in her seat. She didn't slouch or shuffle down, it wouldn't do her any good to give off an uninterested look or seem rude. She was wife to an Emperor, looks had to be maintained. She kept her posture but took to gliding her free hand up and down Geta's arm beneath his cloak.
Her gaze constantly switched between the scene and her surroundings, trying to find different ways to amuse and occupy herself to distract from the noise. (Y/n) knew when they eventually got back to the palace, her ears would be ringing from all this noise. She didn't know how her family could do it, how her husband and brother could walk back into that quiet domain and not feel their heads spinning or their ears ringing and screaming from the drastic volume change.
Get leaned forward at the same moment the inferior gladiator ship crashed into the opponent; the defenders.
The breaking of wood and the groaning and creaking was enough to shake the walls of the colosseum and the roars of men falling into the clutches of sharks and becoming snagged on barbaric teeth made (Y/n) shiver. She tried to steel her expression and hold herself when she wanted to shake and wince at the crowds cheers.
Every noise was overwhelming. Every sense was flooded. Her body was running on adrenaline already and she didn't know what to do with herself.
It was daunting and strange to know she was being observed. She was being watched by the people sitting directly behind her. Those who dared not comment how she rarely attended these events and was far happier secluded in her own company than surrounded with others. And then the crowds were constantly glancing up as well.
Some happy to see their lady Empress joining the festivities, some just wanting to look at her or bask in her beauty that was forbidden to them. Others staring with strange looks in their eyes and some form of detest on their features.
The only eyes (Y/n) wanted looking at her were her husband's. After a while, the atmosphere became one and the same and (Y/n) did her best to drown it out. She sat further back in her seat with Geta's hand on her lap and her fingers tracing the pale veins in his hand like they were a map she was plotting out.
She noticed every time he sat forward or sank back. She smiled at every laugh he let out and noticed when he crossed one leg over the other. Especially when he leaned into her side and pressed a dozen kisses to her temple.
"Shoot! Shoot!" Caracella's voice rung out along with his outburst of clapping and (Y/n) managed a smile when he reached over to squeeze her wrist before he sat forward.
The gore, guts and blood was second nature to both Emperor's and it was a sight they craved to see. The people loved the sight too, they loved the rage and the massacre that was bestowed upon their eyes. It was thrilling for them to witness without being at any real risk of injury themselves, spectating made them feel like part of the game.
When the ships were merged into one mass of broken wood and water and fighting men blurring together, (Y/n) looked down at her husband's hand and inclined her head to the left, towards him.
Then it happened.
A stray arrow, not aimed at any man down in the centre of the colosseum. The quiver broke through the air like a whip and aimed high towards the royal box without anyone seeing or being able to stop it.
A violent scream tore past (Y/n)'s lips and her hands retracted from Geta so her hands could clutch the arm rests of her seat. Her body jolted down against the chair like she was melting on the spot. Her knees pushed forward, her sandals scraped against the floor and caught the back of her dress and her body shuddered when a searing pain struck her right arm.
Geta's body shuddered back into his own seat and he jerked to the left, unintentionally moving away from his wife out of instinct.
His head whipped to the right, watching in horror as an arrow shot right between his wife and his brother, the two people who Geta swore to protect with his life. The arrowhead imbedded into his wife's chair, level with her head when she shrunk down in her seat with her eyes snapped closed.
Less than a foot higher and that arrow would have been in range of her head. One inch to the side and Geta would have lost her.
He could hear the ruckus of voices and the panicked shouts of "The Empress!" and "She's hurt!" flooded the air from all around the colosseum.
Geta bolted up from his seat, his chest heaving against his gown that suddenly felt restrictive with how harshly he was breathing and his body temperature that was rising to a feverish point. His body turned to the right and he crashed down to his knees in front of his wife, kneeling up straight so his body was a shield for any other arrows that tried to aim their way.
Both hands clutched the arms of her chair and he leaned his abdomen against her knees. His eyes scoured over her body with fever and impatience, desperately trying to see if she was hurt. The arrow being lodged in her chair did nothing to calm Geta down.
It didn't matter that the arrow wasn't lodged in her body, that was a small grace, but she could still have been hurt.
Caracella burst out into a fit of screams and clutched the arm of his chair, leaning close to his sister in law to see if she was hurt.
"Are you hurt? Look at me!"
The urgency and the gritty tone to Geta's voice caused (Y/n) to gasp and her eyes snapped open which unleashed a river of tears pouring down her face. Her body was trembling back and forth and her hands felt like they had melted into the arms of the chair.
She couldn't feel anything but panic. It coursed through her body causing her blood to tingle and had her trembling back and forth like someone was shaking her by the shoulders. All (Y/n) could register was that each breath hurt to try and wheeze to gasp for air and she couldn't see her husband when her vision started to blur from the amount of tears she was shedding.
(Y/n) tried to hold still when she felt her husband's unusually rough hands roaming her skin. He tilted her head back, traced the pads of his fingers down her neck, checked around her chest and abdomen but the way he grabbed her right arm and pulled it closer made (Y/n) gasp.
Blood was gushing down her right arm a few inches below her shoulder. There was a gaping cut horizontally through her skin. And blood was trickling down past her elbow and dripping onto her previously pure white dress and it was beginning to soak into the silk sleeve that was now stuck to her lower arm. When Geta let go of her arm, he left a bloodied hand print in his wake.
Something twisted awfully in his stomach when he remembered that his wife was wearing that dress at his request. Maybe if she wore something different, the wound to her arm would be less substantial. A dress with a cloak or a shawl or proper sleeves made of a thicker material would have saved a layer or two of skin from being shredded.
At least the arrow had cut through her arm rather than imbedding it. He dreaded to think how they would have gotten out of here in a hurry if (Y/n) were pinned to the chair with an arrow straight through her arm. Or her chest. Or her neck.
"Go! Now." Geta roughly grabbed his brother's shoulder and hoisted him to his feet, shoving him in the direction of the door along with their close spectators and useless guards who had done nothing to prevent this.
He couldn't care less that his brother was still screaming and in one of his enraged states, he had to move. They had to get back to the safety of the palace.
He watched in a growing sense of panic as his wife started to tremble. Her hands unlatched from the arm rests of her chair, but when she dared to twist her head to look at her arm, a mewl left her lips and she sobbed. The sound broke Geta's heart and he hated the look of panic in her eyes as she tried to move her right arm but it twinged.
Her loose sleeve was still caught within the arrow, effectively pinning her arm to the chair.
That notion clearly made (Y/n) manic because she tried to move and fling her arm around but it didn't do anything but ignite her state of distress. Until Geta leaned across and harshly ripped the sleeve from her dress. He didn't have time to be careful. The gown was ruined. He wouldn't allow the servants to even attempt to remove the blood stains from this dress, it would be burned. Ripping the sleeve caused no issues.
"Come on."
Both hands then reached down for (Y/n) and he gripped her elbows, being more careful with her than with his brother as he pulled her up onto trembling feet. His arm swooped around her waist, reeling her into his chest as his other hand cupped the back of her neck.
He swiftly walked her backwards, ushering her through the door where the last two guards were waiting for them to hurry out.
"Okay, we're going. You're safe." Those last two words were muttered on repeat against (Y/n)'s temple and made tears pour faster down her cheeks.
Both arms enclosed to her chest but it only made (Y/n) notice the pulsing pain that was coursing through her arm in shockwaves. She could feel the agony starting to spark down her arm and it was causing her fingertips to go numb and her hand was trembling.
She managed to fist both hands around Geta's robes, pulling them closer as she muffled her face into his chest to try and stop herself from screaming, but she couldn't stop crying.
No one had ever shot at her before. She had never been hurt like that before. They were supposed to be safe, that was why they had guards in the box with them. No one was supposed to aim for the Emperor's box and try to hurt them. The gladiators should have been controlled.
Aimed a little better, that arrow could have killed her.
That thought made (Y/n) tremble and she whimpered into Geta's robes that she wouldn't dare open her eyes to look at. She had her wounded arm pinned between their bodies. She would no doubt be bleeding all down his crimson and golden robes; they would have to be burned.
Walking at a sideways angle was strange and (Y/n) kept fumbling over her feet, but it didn't stop Geta's harsh strides.
He had his left arm possessively tight around her waist and his right hand cupping the back of her neck with his lips against her hair. He ushered (Y/n) faster, almost pelting down the tunnel that led out of the colosseum. They had to get back to the palace; their fortress was where they would be safe.
"G- Geta…"
"Almost there, you're safe now, I promise."
It didn't take long to get back to the palace which was in a state of distress itself. Servants rushing left and right, many crowding to ask if the Emperor's were safe, if they were harmed, asking what they should do.
One servant ran off, followed swiftly by a guard when they heard Geta's order to fetch the physician.
With Caracella's deteriorating state, his fits of rage and the illness he had, they had a physician who lived at the palace. Ready and willing to help with any and all emergencies they had. He was needed now. He needed to assess (Y/n).
(Y/n) felt like she couldn't breathe.
The swift change from noise and panic and utter chaos had morphed into a calmer sense of chaos and people ushering about in all directions.
She felt like she had been walking in a trance, guided by Geta until he steered her into the main hall where he finally stopped walking. He turned so they were properly facing one another and his hand deadlocked around the back of (Y/n)'s neck while his other hand reeled her closer. He let her pull on his robes, uncaring about the way she was yanking on them, close to tearing the material. All he cared about was having her safe in his arms.
He took a moment to close his eyes and smother his lips into her intricately woven hair. Breathing in her scent as his fingers glided up and down the centre of her back.
She was here. She was in his arms; and she was safe.
When Geta opened his eyes, he stared ahead of him towards the back of the hall. Caracella had slumped down into one of the thrones and someone had already brought Dondus to him to calm him down. The monkey had perched high on his shoulder and Caracella was fiddling with the leash, tossing it between his hands to give him something to do and a way to calm himself down.
"Let's sit down."
(Y/n) barely heard Geta's words and she let herself go limp, allowing him to steer her to sit down a few feet away from Caracella. She felt like she was about to faint when she flopped into a heap in the chair.
When her head tilted down, her eyes focused on the droplets of blood staining her robes.
Her dress had been the purest shade of white to rival the midnight moon. Now it was tarnished. A large streak of blood was smudged into the side of her waist near her belt, with flecks of blood splattered all down the dress. When she looked at her arm, she found herself shaking once again. The cut was leaking water like one of the palace fountains and the trail had now reached her hand. The feeling of the blood slithering between her fingers made (Y/n) want to be sick.
As soon as the physician came running into the hall, Geta was on his feet. His usually pale features were burnt red, his upper lip was sneering and his eyes were filled with the darkest rage imaginable.
"Fix it." His words held no room for argument and the physician was nodding before he could even see what the problem was.
Geta took to pacing up and down beside the chair, constantly switching from staring at the stone floor where he was scrutinising the droplets of blood to looking over at his wife.
Rag after rag of water and blood were thrown into a growing pile on the floor as her arm got cleaned so the wound was visible to the naked eye.
(Y/n) had her forehead resting on her left hand, with her trembling elbow propped up on the arm rest so she didn't have to look at the wound on her arm that was making her feel sick. She knew her arm was shaking horribly in the elder man's grasp as he tried to prod and assess the wound while simultaneously cleaning the steady stream of blood.
"It requires stitching, sir." The physician seemed to pale and shrink in on himself when he looked over at the Emperor who had previously been pacing so harshly on the stone floor that he was wearing his own path down into the stone.
The way Geta's head snapped to the physician with such fury made the elder man quiver.
It looked like Geta wanted to rebutt, like he was ready to raise Hell to the surface and throw everyone down into the depths. But he took a deep breath, enough to stop himself from shaking and he gave a curt nod of his head and a swift flick of his hand. Whatever had to be done. He wanted the physician to do whatever necessary to make sure his wife was okay and out of harm.
(Y/n) looked down in question when a small blue bottle was placed in her left hand and the physician pushed her hand towards her face.
"Drink, it will help with the pain."
She wasn't sure she was ready for the pain of a needle puncturing through her skin, but (Y/n) knew she didn't have a choice. She nodded and gulped down a generous amount of the rather putrid liquid that burned her throat and made her cough. She wasn't sure what was mixed in with the opium in the bottle, but it had a strange way of making her blood bubble in her veins and send her head spinning.
She didn't want to look at the physician as he dabbed medicine along her wound to prevent infection, but she looked over at Geta when Caracella's words hit her ringing ears.
"You're making me dizzy." Caracella seemed unusually nervous as he shrank down in his throne and reached his right hand up to pet Dondus who was perched on his shoulder.
He didn't like how his twin was pacing the floor of the hall like that, it was having a bad effect on Caracella and making him even more unsettled. Someone had shot an arrow at his dear sister in law. An arrow that could easily have hit Caracella himself. It had been a close call for both of them today.
"Geta…" (Y/n) held her free hand out towards her husband, quietly beckoning him back towards her. She didn't want him to wear himself out pacing the room like that, he was only angering himself by dwelling on the events of today.
His fingers immediately wove into her own and he perched down on the arm of her chair.
The moment the needle slipped through (Y/n)'s skin she shrieked and burrowed her face into Geta's waist to try and muffle her distain. Her hand clenched tightly around his and her right arm trembled in the physician's tight grasp as he pulled the thread tight, causing her to groan.
"Someone tried to harm you." The words were whispered against her hair as Geta leaned his head down to hide his lips in her hair.
That was the only thing going through his head. But those words were enough to strike up fear in (Y/n)'s heart. Her head lifted from his waist until her chin was pressing into his chest, allowing her head to tilt back so she could look up at him. Those watering eyes broke his heart and the tears soaking into her face ignited his blood to the same temperature as the fires of Hell.
"W-were they aiming for me?"
The panic in her voice made Geta wince as he moved his free hand to brush his thumb along her jaw.
He didn't know the answer to that. He wasn't sure anyone could answer that question for them. The arrow had been aimed into the royal box, but anyone could have been the target. They could have aimed for either Emperor, as killing them would have incited chaos throughout Rome. They might have been aiming for (Y/n) because harming or indeed killing her would send Geta into a fit of rage so bad he would burn his lands and people to the ground.
There were others sat in the box with them, sat behind them, but it seemed unlikely that any of them had been the target. Aiming for the most important people, the ones who held all of Rome in the palm of their hands, seemed like the most comprehensive bet.
"I don't know, my love. But I won't stand for it; their fate has been sealed."
He knew that his guards had grabbed all of the gladiators in the colosseum. He knew they had all been taken back to their cells and were being held until the Emperors stated what they wanted to be done with them.
Geta hoped they had the gladiator responsible for this heinous crime. He hoped they knew which man had done this because Geta would unleash his wrath onto them. He would deal with them personally and once he was finished, no one would recognise the once would-be gladiator.
The quiet muttering of "They could have killed you," under his breath was heard by both his wife and his brother.
"They almost shot me." Caracella countered with a quiet voice and a rather timid expression that made him seem childlike and innocent. But his words didn't have much of an effect, for all his brother did was stare him down ad huff.
"You aren't the one requiring stitches, brother." He spoke quietly and tried not to snap his words so his brother knew he wasn't upset with him in any way.
Of course it thought angered Geta, but his brother hadn't been hurt and the point of the matter was that it was his wife tucked up into his embrace who needed stitches and comfort. She had the one who had the near death experience.
He wasn't letting anyone get away with this. The person responsible was going to feel one hundred times worse than the pain (Y/n) was in, Geta would make sure of that. He was going to make an example out of the person who had dared to do this. They couldn't have other gladiators getting bold and stupid, believing they could also try their luck at using their weapons against their Emperors.
Geta would put them all back in their places, he would show them exactly why it was he and his brother who wore the golden crowns.
There will be bloodshed.
One aspect of ZoSan that Westerners may not get the full nuance of is the concept of “うちの”, literally “of our/my household”. There’s a reason why the EA fandom (mainly Chinese from my POV) disproportionally ship ZS over other ships, to the point where even dudebros hop the joke.
So there’s this Chinese saying that means “be strict to yourself but lenient towards others” which is seen as model behaviour for respected individuals. I don’t know if there’s an equivalent idiom in Japanese but both Koreans and Japanese hold similar attitudes towards treatment of self vs treatment of others in society. Here’s the fun part: thanks to collectivist culture, one’s “self” extends to your immediate family too. Since you’re seen in conjunction with your family, if you’re head of the house and your “inferiors” misbehave in public, it reflects badly on you as a person. That’s why strict parenting is more normalised in EA culture, because controlling how your kids behave is more or less the same as controlling how you yourself behave. This is also related to how tough love is a more common form of affection in EA families, there’s a sentiment of “being able to be mean to you means we’re close, being too nice means I see you as a stranger.”
You might now see how this relates to the Strawhats in general (see: Nami beating up members for acting out of line). Sanji is a funny one coz he was sort of a maternal figure secondary to Nami early on in the series. Women aside, there’s a difference in how he treats men on his crew and “outsiders” (e.g. Ace). He’s actually not rude towards men, it’s just that we predominantly see his interactions with the crew! Since his crew is his family, he can be strict with them like how he’s strict with himself.
How does this relate to ZS in particular? Well, it’s because Zoro is closest to him on the self—others sphere. Luffy is his captain so despite the usual bickering he has to obey him to some degree. Usopp and Chopper are younger and weaker, so Sanji has a responsibility to take care of them and show generosity as an “elder”. Franky, Brook and Jinbe are way older than him so there has to be some degree of respect when interacting with them. Nami and Robin are Women. This only leaves Zoro, who is his equal in both age, power and hierarchical position on the crew. Essentially, Sanji has every right to hold Zoro to the exact same standard as he would himself. And given that Sanji is extremely harsh to himself, he’s harsh to Zoro too.
This is why there was virtually no discourse over the “Sanji calls Zoro a liability” moment in the EA fandom. The unspoken context was that Sanji was apologising to Jinbe for Zoro, who wasn’t performing his best. And since Jinbe is relatively new to the crew and also much older than Sanji, it feels like a mother/wife apologising for her son/husband?? It’s giving “I’m sorry my Zoro embarrassed us”?? It’s giving “Zoro is my responsibility”?? On the flip side Zoro absolutely does this to Sanji too. I can’t name a specific anime moment but in one of the mobile game collabs he said something like “sorry our cook caused trouble for you”. The specific wording was うちのコック. Something domestic [50k] @fandoms-writings
ex-military amputee!Bucky x fem!Reader
Summary: Needing an escape from the loud and busy city life, Bucky comes to stay with you on your little farm. He didn’t expect you, a hardworking and beautiful woman with struggles of your own, to take his breath away and make life a little less dreary.
{personal comment: This is one of a kind and it got stuck in my head immediately. The way Bucky heals is beautifully written and I love how the animals of the farm got included}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
For the love of the game @pellucid-constellations ♤
College Athlete!Bucky x Reader
Summary: Bucky Barnes was a menace. NYU’s top baseball player, he was used to girls falling at his feet and could smooth talk his way out of just about anything. You hated him. He couldn’t figure out why. So when the novelty of weekend parties and quick hookups finally wore off—and his feelings for you began to grow—he made it his mission to fix it.
{personal comment: I love the changes Bucky goes through and the way all the characters are portrayed. This story never fails to give me butterflies every time I come back to it}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Undisclosed @pellucid-constellations ♤
Lumberjack!Bucky x Reader
Summary: Desperate to outrun a secret that could cost you your life, you seek refuge in a small mountain town. Its deep forests and small cabins make it the perfect place to hide, but the travel website hadn’t mentioned anything about the quiet, burly lumberjack that wouldn’t leave your thoughts. No one had warned Bucky about you either.
{personal comment: The story is so creative and I got hooked on the few hints of the reader's backstory in the first parts and how it got revealed. Overall, it was a great mix of angst, fluff and Bucky in love}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Scars @chickenfics
Bucky x reader Western AU
Summary: Running from a past that haunts you and a future that is unsure, the last thing you wanted was to take up with a stranger. Strangers, you'd learned, are almost always more trouble than they're worth. But when dangers from the life you're trying to leave behind get too close for comfort, drastic times call for drastic measures, and the stranger you'd once feared becomes the only person you can trust -- and perhaps the only person you'd call your friend. Now you both just have to make it out alive...
{personal comment: I'm a sucker for Western AU's and this piece of art satisfied me to no end. I love how naturally a connection bloomed between the two and the way they learned about each other. I would give so much for being able to read this for the first time again}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
A World of Our Own @shreddedparchment ♤
Bucky x Reader Castaway AU
Summary: You and a man named Bucky crash land on a deserted island. Can the two of you come together and make it until rescue comes? After you begin to fall for the mysterious Bucky Barnes, will you even want to be rescued?
{personal comment: I was astounded with the idea of this story and the creativity that came with it. It was lovely to read how Bucky and the reader grew closer over time and how they dealt with getting rescued and having to adjust to a 'normal' life on mainland again}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Just One Kiss @sarahwroteathing
40s!Bucky x 40s!Reader
Summary: Bucky Barnes has been chasing after you since he was ten years old, but you’re determined not to give in. How long can you hold out when all he’s asking for is just one kiss?
{personal comment: This is such a lovely series. Bucky is a sweetheart and those letters were giving me all the feels. I loved all the characters and how they are written}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Awake My Soul [78k] @foreverindreamlandd
Bucky x reader
Summary: It's been five years since zombies first started walking the Earth, destroying anything and everything in their wake. Now, in this apocalyptic world, fighting for survival comes as naturally as breathing. The one thing you've learned ever since they arrived, though, is that the living can be so much more dangerous than the undead. When you stumble across two young, scared boys lost in the woods and being chased by walkers, you go against your better judgment and help them to safety. Little did you know that helping them would lead you to Bucky - an angry, grumpy, distrusting member of the camp Shield. Bucky has zero interest in having you enter his life. He's been hurt before and lost too many people to risk experiencing that kind of pain again, and he knows that there are secrets you aren't telling the group. Yet, when push comes to shove, and you're put at risk, he'll stop at nothing to keep you safe.
{personal comment: The storyline of this series is so creative and I was hooked since the beginning. So much thought went into this and the background of the characters, and I'm beyond grateful I got to read this lovely piece of art}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Burn The Witch @dreamwritesimagines ♤
Bucky x reader
Summary: The mission was simple; get closer to the Winter Soldier and start a relationship with him to get the necessary information for your superiors to use.
Everyone told you not to get your feelings involved.
You should have listened.
{personal comment: I loved reading about how Bucky interacts with the two different personalities the reader portrays without knowing it’s the same person and how she switches between those two. The other characters are great as well and I really enjoy your writing style here]
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
The Bienville @indyluckycharlie ♤
Modern!Bucky x reader
Summary: Bucky is the young CEO of his family’s publishing house. A year into the role and working his ass off, he’s finally taking a much needed vacation (upon the advice of his well-meaning family and friends).
Solo and feeling a little lost, Bucky finds himself getting a little attached to the front desk receptionist, a local who grew up on the islands and dreams of bigger things.
{personal comment: I've read this a few times already and will definitely do it again. I loved how Bucky relaxed more and turned so charming, and how they built that connection so naturally. I felt everything I read and it was beautiful}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Harmless @shurisneakers
Bucky x Villan!Reader
Summary: Bucky volunteers to go stop a small time villain, but nothing can prepare him for what exactly he has to deal with.
{personal comment: I had so much fun while reading this and it’s so damn creative. It was lovely to read how they grew closer over time and the many things they did for each other]
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Heart to a Gunfight [38.3k] @lailannajacobs
Modern!Bucky x reader
Summary: You didn’t want to help Bucky Barnes make it through the party by pretending to be his fake girlfriend, after all, you had just met him. You also didn’t plan on the charade lasting as long as it did.
{personal comment: This is so lovely and I found myself grinning so much while reading this. But I also enjoyed the little angst in there and how they ended up together}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Leave This Town @avengerofyourheart ♤
Mechanic!Bucky x reader
Summary: Your dreams of kissing your small town life goodbye are about to come true when an unexpected detour leaves you stranded. Meeting the handsome local mechanic has you rethinking your plans. Perhaps happiness is less about where you’re headed and more about the people you meet along the way.
{personal comment: I'm a sucker for Mechanic!Bucky and I really love this creative piece of art}
●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●○●
Summary: Shit’s been rough. Shit was rough even before the blip. Dr. Hart shares an office with dr. Raynor, and you share a waiting room with Bucky Barnes.
{personal comment: I enjoyed this so much and went through so many emotions while reading it, feeling everything so vividly. This includs all I need of Bucky Barnes and I'm in love}
But when course is plotted for a legendary island, the secret that has kept you alive for years is threatened to be revealed.
{personal comment: This series is amazing and the storyline has such a nice flow to it, that had me hooked so bad. Bucky's so respectful and protective and I read this so many times already, it might actually be sad. But I'm in love with this art}
It was there that you found your match.
Only one person has the power to make Stolas cry
And I'll keep the intrigue just a little bit longer so you can try to guess for yourself and experience the kind of satisfaction I had once I pieced it all together. And, oh boy, did it click!
Okay, so today, after a rather passionate conversation with @tealvenetianmask about how fandom seems to perceive Stolas as overly emotional and soft demon, we started rummaging through all the scenes where Stolas actually cried. We were blown off by some revelations.
First note: it's actually not much. Our owl appears to be very sturdy and often bites back when attacked, rather than shutting down as one might expect.
Second note... Better let me show you. Let's walk through all the 'Stolas cries' scenes and see what is happening there, and answer the question, "What, or rather who, sets him off the rails?"
This is your last chance to place your bets and educated guesses. Because below are big clues, and, eventually, answer.
Circus
We follow up on Stolas shortly after the disastrous date at Ozzie's - arguably, a couple of hours later. He looks absolutely miserable. He has boozed himself to unconsciousness. His eyeliner is ruined from earlier tears. He groans, either from headache or emotional turmoil, grabs three Happy pills, and shoves them down his throat.
Whatever happened at this club ruined our bird, to the point he's looking for anything to avoid being alone with his thoughts.
Western Energy
One shed tear. That's all Stolas allows himself. That's what I am talking about when I claim he is actually very tough. He is being tortured, mutilated, and by this point, he has a pretty good understanding that his demise is likely inevitable.
And you know what he does in response? He talks back. He cuts through Striker's bullshit about royals taking everything from him and points out that his killer took a contract from a royal. He literally humiliates Striker with sex jokes and mocks his oversized dick on the statue ego. Figuratively, he spits death in its face.
The Full Moon
Stolas is destroyed.
This meeting was nerve-wracking even before it happened - all the preparation, insecurities, misunderstandings of the past, and lingering, terrifying questions (He loves me? He loves me not?).
It takes weeks to set everything in motion. He planned it meticulously. He scripted every word, every movement of his body, every subtle tone in his voice.
But he forgot that there was another party in this play. The party who was not given the script and is burdened with his own trauma. One shitty assumption, one poorly-thought-out action, and here it is - mockery, avoidance, a fight... and tears. His first meltdown he wasn't able to conceal.
His worst nighmares came true, or so he convinced himself. He loves me not.
Apology Tour
Our last stop on our 'we-love-being-tortured-by-crying-Stolas' tour is here.
The wound is still fresh, bleeding even, and here he comes, rubbing salt into it. Someone Stolas still desperately wants. Someone who was infinitely brash, rude, and aggressive just this morning. Someone who doubled down on statements that made Stolas believe this particular someone hates him.
That someone tries to talk. To explain. To apologize. Wonders how Stolas could actually care about him. Says the prince is better off without him.
Fuck... The prince came here to forget, to wipe that someone (okay, it's getting increasingly hard to pretend it's not obvious yet) from his memory, at least for the night, and he still won't let Stolas go.
He breaks into tears, crushed, reassured he can't have anyone who would hold him, who would say he is the only one, but recuperates shortly after - he was taught better than this.
Okay, are we ready for the shocker of the year?
It's Blitzø.
It was his date with Blitzø at Ozzie's, where he was ignored, humiliated, and was told that their relatioship was only about sex, and that he was the one who made it clear.
It was Blitzø turning down (or so he thought) his distress call, leading him to believe he was left alone to die.
It was Blitzø mocking his confession and assuming it was just a fucking roleplay.
Finally, it was Blitzø haunting him since that very morning and, albeit with better intentions, still hurting him beyond his abilities to recover.
The only person who tore his soul apart enough to break his inpenetrable mask - built up by decades of gritted teeth, restraint, and bravery - was the one he probably cares about the most.
It was not Octavia, whom he holds close to his heart but couldn’t allow to see him depressed. He had to be strong for her; he needed to raise and support her.
It was not Stella, whom he endured for years, yet did not satisfy her wish to see him whimper. He talked back, argued, ignored, and seethed. But he never gave in.
It was him. An imp who stole his grimoire and gave him the best time of his life, however sad that may sound.
Now, thanks for joining this drama in four acts. You may pull out your handkerchiefs and ugly cry right here, in your places. Don't hold it in.
Because I don't.
#AND NOW listen me out#if you take this as me shitting on Blitzø please reconsider because I am not#I am just emphasizing how much Blitzø impacts Stolas#to the extent this owl's outer shell crumbled and he was not able to hold it in anymore#and I don't claim Stolas *never* cried before#but given what we've seen on the screen it's obvious he is very hard to break#BLITZ! The next time Stolas cries because of you it's better be the tears of fucking joy you hear me????#helluva boss#akira's whimpery metas#stolas#stolas goetia#stolitz#blitz x stolas#stolas x blitz#blitzø#helluva boss circus#helluva boss western energy#helluva boss the full moon#helluva boss apology tour#helluva boss spoilers
This is from your young blood post i saw: I’ve heard people didn’t like the fact that rejet made ayato out to be the adam but i don’t really understand as to why?? Wouldn’t this add more depth to the franchise. For example, Subaru, he’s known for openly hating his father so I was thinking, doesn’t that add a lot more drama to his route or atleast subtle irony? Also Reiji, he admires his father but isn’t adam. I think the young blood chapter was amazing and adds onto the whole like semi forbidden love?? or dark romance bit.
// Honestly, I’ve only seen Western fans complain about it, because in Japan, everyone in the DL fandom seems to love and respect Ayato. He has the highest desire rate and the biggest fanbase in EA.
Aside from his marketing appeal, I genuinely believe Ayato is “the chosen one” because he possesses innate traits that others either never had or lost at a much younger age. Despite his life being a living hell, Ayato, as a child, was never deliberately rude to anyone, and remained selfless and compassionate. In YB, after discovering that Laito and Kanato are missing, he’s willing to risk his own life to go back for them, even knowing the danger he could face. Later, when he’s used as bait and his absence goes unnoticed by his brothers after meeting again, his first thought upon reaching the fig tree is “I don’t know what happened to Shu and Subaru… no way they got eaten, right?”. Even after he nearly got killed, Ayato’s instinct is to worry about his brothers’ safety.
What Karlheinz says to him here could also be a factor. Ayato's ability to continue cherishing life, despite how badly he was treated by people around him, and his mental resilience in the face of what he's endured, make him the perfect candidate.
I agree that other characters had a stronger connection to the Karlheinz plot and it would have been more interesting, but I kind of like how Ayato is positioned as this special and different being in canon, even though no one—not even the characters themselves—can really explain why. I guess what makes Ayato “Adam” to Karlheinz is simply the fact that he’s Ayato. 😂😂
So, this week's episode...
[Spoilers below cut]
Past Ink: Guys, it's fine. This isn't a serious episode, it would be too soon for another arc. It's just gonna be another silly Saturday.
Current Ink: ....
(the following is my live reaction:)
[*unholy screaming*] FOUR NOOOOOOOOOOOO
WOW WHAT A GREAT START TO THIS EPISODE, SCRATCH EVERYTHING THAT I SAID ABOUT THIS BEING A "NORMAL" EPISODE
NOPE I NEED TO PAUSE, I NEED TO TAKE A WALK BC I'M NOT GONNA GET OVER IT, DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS COULD LEAD
they're not gonna do it in this episode BUT the fact that goop!4 is being acknowledged in every way possible, we might just have a sequel in our hands
NO NO NO CUT THE INTRO, I HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED THE EPISODE YET AND YOU WANT ME TO MAKE A THEORY ON IT ALREADY? HOLD YOUR FUCKIN HORSES, I'LL GET THERE GEEZ
anyway, we have to press play...
I'm pretty sure someone already has done a pirate au (no I'm not over what I just watched) and anyway, artists: here's pirate SMG4
Four, you should've read the file name before downloading it [*shakes head*]
Wait, is this going to be a parody of computer buddies? That's actually pretty fun..... OH NO NO NO
Ah, so we are doing computer buddies
Actually, yeah, can we have Mario as president please
love how it says "no one even compares to mario. especially smg4 who sucks booty cheeks [or ass] and mario doesn't"
Observe as the SMG4 fandom gets terrified of the word "perfect" [*screams*]
MARIO MARIO NO NO NO HE DIDN'T SAVE
I felt that in my core omg
as a graphic designer, this hurts
apparently, there's a whole new dimension in our computers, Only in the SMG4 Universe [*cheesy thumbs up*]
We really are getting all the computer buddies, huh? I wonder if KinitoPET will appear
[*silver the hedgehog voice*] It's no use!
BRITISH SMG3
wow what a funny bit... WAIT HOLD UP WAIT A MINUTE, LOOK AT THE MEDIA BOX
the eyes....
w̷̹̓e̷̼̽ ̸̯́n̴̩͆e̵̝̓v̴̼͑ë̵̤r̴͓͛ ̷̭͝l̵̦̎e̴̞͗f̵͉̐ṯ̴͗
and the left eye too... oh god, the EYE OF RA— [*gets shot*]
honestly, Four, you improved your aim ever since Western Spaghetti (ik you also did for PV but that's not the point)
I knew they were gonna bring in buff Luigi again
I'M SCREAMING
THERE IS NO WAY THE TEAM JUST DROPPED THAT ON US, THIS CAN'T BE REAL
ok first off, the fact that Four has a folder labeled "Super SECRET Spicy Memes" is giving "totally homework" folder energy (and I don't want to even think more about that)
hey, Four did say that Three brings some spice into his life (yeah, "rosemary to my bread" and all that jazz)
SECOND, the fact he has an image of SMG3 with him saying "whats the matter smg4 kun?"
THEN the "I know what you are" audio clip...
Four, buddy, you're down bad aren't you?
like "woah smg4's bisexual, I didn't know that", the closet is out of GLASS so we been knew but I DID NOT expect this
having Three be a tsundere is one thing, but FOUR....
🫵🏳️🌈⁉️
"they're dating behind the scenes" at this point, yeah
we have to keep going... [*secretly puts this clip on the fridge*]
I hate this so much /silly
[*chaos ensues*] [*sips my coffee*] just another tuesday saturday
GOTTA GO FAST GOTTA GO FAST— [*gets tazed*] i can never catch a break c'mon man
oh hey Swag!
four dollars is four dollars, you got yourself a deal
ok, I'm gonna need everyone to see Four's cute little hops here:
look at him go, my silly little goober :) oh, now you have? then let's keep going
holy shit, this fight scene is so well animated!!! LET'S GOOOO
never thought I'd see the day of seeing biblically accurate bonzi in an SMG4 episode and yet here we are.
SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP
THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING I'VE SEEN IN MY LIFE, I'M ASCENDING
"...but they hugged before" NO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND
A normal hug, where two people cross each other and are unable to see the other's face since it's over their shoulder, is just as it is: a normal hug. It can be seen as platonic and/or romantic.
THIS is a lot more intimate. 3 and 4's heads touch while they hold each other by the hand. This type of hug is reserved more for romantic partners when the situation leads them to a devasting end, where they face each other to look at and remember what their partner looked like, one last time before they die.
In this case, it makes sense as the computer is collapsing within itself.
"It's not actually them tho." Yes, they're digital copies of 3 and 4 but that's the thing: they're COPIES, acting on what 3 and 4 would actually do
SMG34 shippers, we are eating GOOD today yum yum
but then, that begs the question: would there be a moment where 3 and 4 would reveal their feelings for each other at the worst possible time?
(you guys are not going to be ready for my next episode concepts) What, who said that?
uh anyway them 💙💜 gotta put it on the fridge
I feel for you, Four, but I have a horrible feeling about this
...
Foreshadowing is a literary device—
no seriously, I feel like this could be part of a future arc where a past villain would ruin everything Four has and would offer up a deal when Four would be the most desperate. There's always a catch. Hmm, why does that seem familiar...?
Your life's work or your friends, it's your call, SMG4
:)
HELL YEAH FOUR, THROW IT AWAY (omg just like how he chose Three over the USB, I'm crying dude)
also congrats to Ourstor08954957 for the lovely art in the end credits 🎉 such cute doodles ❤️
.・-: ✧ :--: ✧ :-・.
Oh boy, what an episode. I feel like I'm in another plane of existence right now. Everything was absolutely incredible, great job Team!!
Everyone, say THANK YOU to whoever put the SMG34 crumbs in there, we shall treasure it for the rest of our lives. I'm gonna put those moments on my fridge. OH I would love to see the artists draw the SMG34 hug or pirate Four!
Love the fighting scene right by the end and the little details they have added in there. I guess it's "Torture Ink with the Idea that Goop!4 May Happen" day but hey, I'm so normal about it (no I'm not). I've been a bit stressed since finals are coming up so I'm thankful for anything this episode for me.
(If anyone is curious, the WOTFI website is still up and yes, I am logging its status just in case.)
I'm sure everyone is going crazy over this...
you're like the first blog i thought about ranting on this to but it drives me up the wall that some people treat any criticism aimed at tsats2 as being anti-ship or avoidable via just "not reading it". i dont think they realize that we're talking about a bigger issue of soulless commercialization and heavy quality downgrade of a franchise, not like. about an indie author publishing a fan book lmao
'i'll read it anyways haters gonna hate' crowd likely largely funding richard's mediocrity is sad.
I think part of it may have to do with a.) a lack of distinction in recent fandom culture between "Fandom" and "Audience" (alongside other recent fandom culture attitudes as well) and b.) so much of Rick's brand is built up exactly on parasocial behavior that a lot of fans get caught up in it. [under cut cause this got long:]
Re: The first, more recent fandom culture tends to treat "Fandom" and "General audience" as wholly equivocal. Because of this, the concepts tend to bleed into each other in a way we haven't quite seen before fandom became mainstream, and as a result we get a kind of Worst Of Both Worlds situation - a bunch of very passionate fans who have no community, create little to no fanworks themselves (only consume), and only engage at a surface level with the source material. Their only "fandom" community hub is the source material and official social media and they don't have a concept of how to exist outside it, unlike folks who are more used to older fandom culture and are self-sufficient. They have the passion and identity of classic fandom, but none of the depth, and so threats to the source material feel like threats to their community as a whole. They also just don't seem to understand that different subsections of the deeper fandom community are engaging with the material on an entirely different level, or they don't understand why they're doing that. They see no need to because they're never actually engaging with the community or source material beyond a surface level. Functionally they don't have a community. And mainstream media is actively encouraging this because it's profitable for them - they're reaping all of the rewards of fandom, minus the fact that because of the lack of actually community and support structures the entire "fandom" will only have a shelf life the same length of the source material. But at the same time this means they don't have to worry about quality or etc, because this extremely passionate side of their audience will just take anything thrown at them and it'll phase out almost immediately. It doesn't need to be good, it just needs to elicit some kind of reaction on social media. Any publicity is good publicity type stuff.
This lack of true community plus the parasocial emphasis the RR company has tends to make these types of fans double-down. Rick and co. are explicitly advertised as being both part of the "community" and integral to it. And when they've built Rick (and co) up as this moral paragon critical to both part of their identity they're very passionate about and what little of a community they have, any attack on him feels like an attack on themself. Particularly when so much of the publicity and marketing surrounding Rick right now is about his alleged activism when a lot of the criticism about him and the series is actively calling that into question with his unaddressed internalized bigotries. Acknowledging that what Rick is saying and promoting himself as versus his writing and actions don't always line up and pointing out the bigotry present in his work forces people to acknowledge and think about performative activism, which can make a lot of people very uncomfortable! It's forcing them to acknowledge "Oh, even if I'm saying all the right words and calling myself an ally, I am not immune to being bigoted if I don't address my internalized biases. My actual behavior matters." and that especially can feel like a personal attack. Especially in today's western landscape of media consumption being viewed as a moral act in itself.
I suspect this is why a lot of the retaliation against criticism of Rick and the franchise right now is "Why can't you just have FUN? You're just trying to hate for views. Don't take it so seriously! It's not that deep!" - they not only have no interest in engaging deeper in the material, but don't understand why others would, and doing so jeopardizes the foundations of what they consider the fandom. They can't fathom anybody legitimately having these criticisms (particularly not anybody who would ACTUALLY consider themself a "fan" - because their perception of "fan" is themself) because they're so resistant to digging deeper into the media/source material or the concept that anyone would for any legitimate reason (because as long as they keep it as "it's not that deep!!! it's just fun! just enjoy it you wet blanket!!!!" and take things at their word, they can feel secure in that performative aspect and not have to unpack it), and acknowledging that those criticisms exist and are valid means they have to acknowledge the franchise is flawed and imperfect, so they presume the claims are entirely superficial and the individual has ulterior motives rather than, yknow, doing what fandom does: diving deeper.
#pjo#riordanverse#long post //#rr crit#tsats crit#Anonymous#ask#this ended up more musings on the state of the fandom right now but in my defense i wrote this while i had covid#and im pretty sure like right after i finished this i blacked out and blacked back in from fever lmao#so if this is somewhat incoherent thats my excuse#its been sitting in my drafts for a couple weeks
5 tf fandom pet peeves?
when people assume G1 fanon soup is something 'we can all agree on', but especially when this expectation is pushed onto people talking about non-G1 (as in, cartoon/marvel) continuities. i've seen sooo many people get annoyed at those of us who write for idw1 canon directly and who do not incorporate old fandom fanon soup headcanons they feel 'everyone' has miraculously agreed on at some point as being Better. also a problem for those of us into TFA, tbh.
people bringing up Kiss Players as though it's some 'haha, Japanese fandom/canon is soooo disgusting and awful always and forever, those waaaacky Japanese are so gross!!!' as though a) it's not like pointing to the 'romeo and juliet law' in the Bayverse movies and saying the same about Western TF fandom as a whole and b) not, like. actually widely hated among plenty of sections of Japanese fandom specifically because everyone is like 'god, everyone's gonna assume this edgelord bullshit is what we all actually want, huh'. KP was a deliberate attempt to be shocking and controversial and niche in a bad way; it is not considered Mainstream Content in japanese fandom anymore than it is anywhere else, stop being weird and xenophobic about the deliberate bait shit.
people constantly tokenizing idw1 arcee, anode and lug in ways where they exclusively bring them up for Diversity Points TM but never outside the 'and my favourite comic even has a trans character, please be Impressed!!!' thing... like, yes, fellow MTMTE/LL fan, i also think lug and anode (the latter especially) are fascinating characters i enjoy a lot, but do you exclusively bring them up when trying to dunk on someone on twitter and not. like. as actual characters in their own right worth exploration (anode has a whole character arc! it's good!!). please consider doing that more perhaps. it's lonely out here trying to actually talk about the trans characters in idw a lot of the time! ngl! this has been a really consistent thing since i got back into the fandom in 2017 and i'm mildly annoyed we've made so little progress on it since, tbqh.
the general tendency of the IDW fandom to treat word of god as gospel. please. it's fun to know writers' headcanons; if it's not actually in the comic, we don't have to treat it as much more than headcanons without specific reason to.
stop doing weird biological essentialism about the robots that no canon does about the robots. we do not need weird biological essentialism adding in. i promise we do not need more of this. goes across the board. what if- and hear me out- we even strove to do. less weird biological essentialism than some of the canons. about the actual literal robots it is already annoying that canon sometimes does even a little biological essentialism about. yknow. What If.
Hey Y'all. As yall probably know, I'm from Appalachia. Western North Carolina. Unless you live off the grid, you're probably aware that Appalachia just got annihilated by hurricane Helene. Everyone here needs help, for cleanup, food, water, etc. Why? "The government hates Appalachia", we all say in unison. I don't usually post stuff like this, no, but it's really really important to me to get this out here.
I work at a little shop in downtown Marshall, which was recently submerged under 27 feet of water--to my knowledge thats 5 feet higher than the flood of 1916. The name of that shop is Of Wand and Earth; it's a little metaphysical shop and tea house. We sell all kinds of stuff--crystals, incense, tea, tarot, we do readings, we have a healing temple, and it's a community hangout spot for anyone. You name it. A big portion of proceeds we make from our sage goes straight to funding indigenous peoples foundations. This store does so much good for the community that if I listed it all, this post would go on and on and on.
My shop owner is an absolute blessing--I've known her since this shop got its beginnings, and I was able to finally, formally work here for two weeks before Helene hit.
I know everyone in downtown Marshall, much like a huge portion of Appalachia, needs help right now. I also know that finding reliable sources to donate to rn is kind of hard--but this one is legit. One of my boss' twin daughters made this gofundme.
The donations will go to helping clean and rebuild Artisun, located in Hot Springs, and Of Wand and Earth, located in Marshall (my boss owns both, and both stores are very similar). Funds will also go to helping the employees (like myself) and vendors that sell from both businesses.
If you show me proof of donation, no matter the amount, I'll do a digital sketch of any human character you want--oc, fandom, you name it.
I am trying to spread this as far as I can, so even if you can't donate, please consider giving this post a reblog. This shop means the world to me, as does my town and all of Appalachia. If the news isn't gonna talk about it, I will. If you need/want any proof that I work here and that this store is legit, please DM me. Here's the link:
Here's some photos of OWAE, and what it currently looks like as well.
Why I think Mael Stronghart can be an interesting character:
Stronghart is often regarded by others, especially in a western audience, to be a boring antagonist. Most often I see aa fandom put his enjoyers in one of two categories:
1. You find him physically attractive or
2. You love to hate him.
I'm here to propose a third option: perhaps he is, in fact, interesting. He isn't necessarily the most openly expressive individual, and that seems to make people inclined to think him boring, but it's more that is his outward presentation to people. Like Damon Gant with his jovial persona, Stronghart wears a veneer to give a sense of invulnerability, a resoluteness, security, and impartiality, which would probably be required in his mind of someone not only a judge in authority but a person who is representative of a larger governmental judicial whole.
Ace attorney is no stranger to the concept of antagonists serving as representative symbols of a larger systemic corruption, Stronghart being part of this lineage, though if discussing what makes him individual, it would be that he needs control. He needs security. He mentions himself that he likes things to run smoothly, like the gears of a clock.
This brings the point of the clock analogy being relevant to his character. If ever encountering a traditional clock, the mechanations operate by an elaborate system of gears. The maintenance of which requires particular maticulousness, the likes of which, if neglected, begin to show wear on the machinery and the clock begins to slow and fall apart. His chronic tardiness is also reflective of this idea, as it shows his negligence. He adds more gears and systems to the elaborate mechanations of his plans that he can not keep up to attend to them all and begins to show signs of deterioration by his delays being unable to keep up with the mess he's made to keep as much in order and control as possible.
Truly, Stronghart's journey as a character is one of obsession with control and by putting all responsibility of everything on himself because he finds difficulty in putting trust in others, he bites off more than he can chew, and Sholmes exploits that to take him down. It certainly doesn't help that "Chunosuke" decides to hickory dickory dock up and down said clock, further throwing a wrench into these unsustainable plans, exacerbating the original issues in the first place.
He serves as a foil to all of the protagonists for this reason. Ryuunosuke is ultimately successful because he relies on others. Likewise with Sholmes, Barok, Susato, Iris, Gina, and others. Stronghart can't do that because he can't trust others for loss of control, and a key component of trust is vulnerability. He will not give his vulnerability. He can't. He can not trust a broken system that allows guilty individuals to get away with their crimes by means of corruption, so he takes matters into his own hands. It's that inability to trust that brings his downfall and allows Ryuunosuke and friends to actually bring about positive change.
The last time we see Stronghart, he is laid bare before all the consequences of his actions and only when he is finally caught, does he display any act of vulnerability, not because of giving trust, but because he's given up on everything and the one person he had any sort of trust in: the queen because, in his mind, she betrayed him. He's a royalist because the Queen represented the ultimate symbol of control and security. "The benevolent force guiding the empire." So when she leaves him to rot for his misdeeds instead of rewarding him for doing what he believed was justified for the betterment of Her Majesty's empire, he dies alone, a broken, lonely man.
#great ace attorney#great ace attorney spoilers#character analysis#mael stronghart#this is me infodumping on the character. this is by no means me saying you can't disagree with me#you can like whoever and however you like and im not automatically right either. this is just my interpretation and why i like him#Had to put the disclaimer for the piss on the poor site
