So since we all know I goofed a bit on this because the last three are actually Mycenaean stirrup jars and NOT Minoan. Someone made a comment a while ago in the notes and I recommend seeing what they have to say because its interesting knowledge!

However, since I'm currently writing my masters thesis on the transition from the Mycenaean to Protogeoemtric style in Athens, I suddenly find myself knowing a lot more about Mycenaean pottery than ever before, so I thought I'd offer some fun facts about the three of them!

Its true that the Mycenaean style was heavily influence by their Minoan neighbors for a while, however by the Late Helladic III phase (1230 BC, roughly, according to the timeline offered by Arne Furumark 1972), Mycenae broke off from that Minoan influence and headed in a more geometric direction. A bunch of motifs that had once been these naturlaistic ornaments, such as waves and flowers, when through a period of geometrization, turning into more abstract ornaments like spirals and concentric circles and semicircles.

The thing thats interesting about the three Mycenaean stirrup jars is that even when Mycenae was still influenced by the Minoan style, they prefered a more symmetric and geometric style, alluding to the later invention of the Protogeometric and Geometric styles.

R. L. Murray Jr summarizes it beautifully in his 1975 essay on the subject:

"Mycenaean work is not inspired by the great freedom and finesse of expression that Minoan art is. It is heavy rather than light, stolid rather than soaring, formal rather than free, with symmetric rather than free-form decoration. The Mycenaean artist is more interested in zones and panels or metopes of decoration, in symmetry of design rather than flowing truth to nature in floral and marine designs, and in these characteristics are the seeds of something that will develop to fruition later, in Protogeometric times."

With that in mind, the three Mycenaean jars begin to make sense. You could draw a line through the center of their octopi, and they would look largely identical on both sides. Instead of the flowing seaweed dancing between the arms of the Minoan octopi, you have the Mycenaean classic of lines layering on top of each other - a style sensibility and preference that I believe would evolve into the concentric circle and semicircle ornamented amphoras of the Protogeometric.

Also the Stirrup jar is a funny little vessel that is wholly Mycenaean and which was apparently used to ship Mycenaean goods. The vessel was phased out of use in the transitional period from Submycenean to Protogeometric when the collapse of the Mycenaean Palatial society halted their large export of goods and the vessel lost its primary function. Styrenius (1967) speculates that the stirrup jar was replaced by the lekythos, since the lekythos grew in numbers a lot the moment the stirrup jar stops appearing in graves.

The artist was clearly going through their own thing when this was made. Sadly they died so we may never know what they were trying to convey here

mods, what would YOU guys have liked to see from a Jason Lives AU? Where he still become red hood? Where he (temp or not) retires? I've been thinking about it a lot

I wrote this on my personal blog years and years ago and some of the things i would like to see are

his relationship with Bruce still becoming strained. death or not i think they had some issues to sort through and they both need help AND more importantly they need proper development they were never truly given in canon. the canon jason lives au sorta started strongly in that regard (and kept it strong until the end tbh, it was everything else that was fucked up) but well.

While i do think retiring from Robin for a bit would be good for Jason i hate HATE when people just turn him into a civilian and do the whole twitter-esque "he can help more outside of being a vigilante!!!". like its a bad idea for bruce, and its a bad idea for jason sorry. i think he would try to give it a try, focus on being Jason Todd, and finding out who he is outside of Robin and outside of the expectations for him and not needing to be on constant survival mode, but ultimately i think he would become another vigilante anyways. maybe return to robin. maybe something new. idc.

(in my old blog i said i liked him becoming Red Robin, and designing a new suit with the help of Bruce and Dick since he was never given his own Robin design during his original run, and not only does he deserve it but its very symbolic that he really was running around in dick's hand me downs for years. but it would be fun if he got a completely new name too, a few years ago Cardinal was very popular but my birds knowledge has become very rusty.. i remember also liking Shrike)

people might not like this idea but i do like him somewhat following up Dick's steps and forming his own little team too, especially because he lacked a strong support system outside of Bruce, you know? Dick had the titans when he left, Jason never had anyone but a friend here and there that were vaguely mentioned and not fleshed out. So i think a good step forward for Jason would be to have his own team (my usual pick is eddie / rose / connor sorry not sorry #mytitans but i'm also down for ocs, i've made a few of those too lmao)

I really think regardless of him living he would still think some people deserve nothing but death. Maybe he wouldn’t straight up kill people, but there’s a fat chance there’s times when he didn’t do “everything” he could to save some people who didn’t deserve it and i think he would still argue with bruce about it and i even like the idea of his own team having that argument as well, love the idea of connor carrying the duty of being their moral compass over there at times

that's some specific stuff i would love for a jason lives au. my vague wishes are

let him live

don't torture him

dont make him suffer anymore

dont turn him into a villain

as happy as i am that bluesky seems to successfully be sapping twitter and accruing a robust userbase, it's so fucking depressing seeing twitter -- once an imperfect, but fun, unique and global platform that reshaped so much of culture in ways both good and horrible -- just become another ambling internet corpse of nazis and righties flinging their own shit. sure gab and truth social are just the same, but they were designed to be that way.

and he almost gave up. but twitter leadership grabbed him back, capitulated to this rich asshole and now this platform that, if nothing else, was pretty useful in a lot of ways....is just a trash island of bots and fascists that will hopefully disappear. this platform that had been around for 16 years and probably could have stayed around a good deal longer just chose to annihilate itself. free market economics!

Olympia design notes + fun facts (under read more)

Just some minor changes to her original character sheet

I wanted to draw a more detailed version of my mc

Olympia facts:

She is part of the nerd clique (but outside the 3 original options she would be in the musician clique)

Her closest friends are Autumn, Nishan, Mia and Ezra

At the start of the school year, she had originally planned to lay low and make sure not to stand out so she decided not to interact with anyone at school unless necessary. Obviously those plans got thrown out the window the second she met Autumn.

Despite always telling herself to stay away from people, she subconsciously ends up getting close to people anyways

She's the type of person who tells herself not to get her hopes up and lower her expectations but secretly clings onto hope anyway

Has no sense of self preservation and will jump into any situation without preparation as her motto is "no think, only do"

Music is her life, composing new songs and creating melodies is practically second nature.

Her natural speaking voice is very soft, airy. She's also not a very big talker

She is a classically trained guitarist from a young age. She had always wanted to learn how to play the electric guitar but her parents didn't allow it. After getting sick of her begging they allowed her to learn the guitar on the condition that it was an acoustic guitar. She only got an electric guitar after joining the band

She used to be ballerina because her parents thought it would teach her to be more graceful and dignified. She did just the bare minimum so her parents don't get mad, but bad enough so that she can stay at the back during performances.

She struggles to show emotions a lot of the time but she always makes sure that her friends know how much she cares about them

Family backstory

She has an older brother named Apollo who is the golden child of the family

They both have Greek names relating to gods because their parents had high expectations from them as soon as they were born

Her parents always pushed them to be perfect from a young age, it worked for Apollo but not so much for Olympia

Both her parents are always schmoozing at events that they force her to come to and are always disappointed when she doesn't act like a proper lady

Her parents and older brother always tell her she's too sensitive and

They both love to brag about Apollo in front of other families but always avoid the question when they ask about Olympia

Current living situation:

She was born in Singapore but moved to New York at age 10 and sent away to California at 15

She was expelled from her last school after an incident with her brother and was sent away by her parents to live with her uncle and cousin

Has a pet cat named Sunny that she adores with all her heart. She found him together with her cousin.

It took her a while to get along with her cousin at first, but later on they become a lot closer and she acts like an older sister figure to him.

I'd also like to introduce her family in a different post if people are interested!

You stop beneath one, eye caught by a striking sight. Amid the bare branches you see a round bundle of stunning green leaves. Hanging down above you are dozens of beautiful little pearly white berries. The fruit tempts you, but you don’t dare touch. Instead you simply admire them. Life among the dead of winter. Mistletoe.

@slocotion Hi, here is my design for slocotion's patreon dyo doll contest. Her name is Haustoria of the Pale. I was very excited to put this together once it struck me. I thought of all my favorite fruits I could have used but then inspiration hit me as I was considering less common fruits and fungi. Mistletoe is used medicinally by some but the entire plant, including its cute white berries, is toxic. Since this is a longer post, I’ll include more notes on my design under a cut but to point out the most important thing, I’ve combined the nature of the toxic berries with some historical+mythological inspiration that I think echoes it nicely.

In Norse mythology, a well known story is that of the death of Baldr. Baldr was the most loved god of the Aesir, so when a vision of his death reached his parents Odin and Frigga, they did all they could to protect him. Frigga sent her servants all over the world to make every creature and thing vow to never harm a hair on Baldr’s head. All but mistletoe promised, too insignificant or too young to make the vow. After it was done, Bladr seemed invincible. Since nothing was willing to hurt him, the gods would sometimes gather around and throw things at him, watching everything bounce off without injuring him. Loki, jealous of the love and affection that was always paid to Baldr, came up with a plan to get rid of him. He had an arrow made of mistletoe and brought it to Baldr’s blind brother Hodr. He gave it to him to throw at Baldr as all the gods pelted him with objects and weapons. Hodr threw the arrow and, since mistletoe had never promised not to harm him, it pierced his chest, killing him instantly... And so Baldr was delivered to the depths of the land of the dead, looked over by Hel.

Mistletoe is a very interesting plant to me. It’s not a tree or vine or bush, but instead its an evergreen parasite. The sticky seeds attach themselves to the branches and grow into it with a haustorium, which is a structure that lets them sap nutrients from the host plant. Haustoria’s name is a reference to this structure. “of the Pale” is a reference to not only the color of the berries but the pale gray and white landscape of winter.

Mistletoe berries are heavily toxic but also exist in winter, when other plants may be barren and “dead.” Because of that and their parasitic nature I see them as a sweet little balance of life and death. In addition to that, I use the split colors of the face/mask of Haustoria to reference the goddess of the land of the dead, Hel, who is described as having a body that is half black as death, split down the middle.

The structure of the outfit is inspired by Scandinavian and specifically Norwegian folk dresses, since I’m borrowing old Norse history for more inspiration, it seemed fitting. I also felt the style would be good to accompany the botanical and berry designs attractively.

The twin peaked hood is to further split the design down the middle, with little charms to show life and death.

I included white beads all over the outfit to represent the mistletoe berries themselves so they could stand out.

The dark side of her face is adorned with thorns and has three mournful black tears leaking down from her eye, as well as a hollow half of the center heart.

The light side is blushed and lively with shiny eyes, leaves shaped like the mistletoe leaves, red petals like the mistletoe blooms, three white dots to be the mistletoe fruit, and the center heart is full.

Her cape is white on the inside to represent the white of the berries and also the white of snow.

To cap it off, I do believe mistletoe is fitting for a plague doctor as they are still used medicinally to this day. :)

XD Okay, okay jokes aside Nami is an undercover thief who is posing as one of the knight/solider of the kingdom of Germa, so she can steal as much of their valuable treasures and sciences as she can that faithful night. Who would she encounter but one of the princes in the dead late of that night and quite the charming one at that. Perhaps, she will add a certain blonde prince as one of items to steal away from Germa.

I have a personal headcanon/idea that once Bilbo adopts Frodo and brings him to Bag End, before or maybe even at midnight when their shared birthday officially begins, his first gift to Frodo is an embroidered waistcoat; a kind of tradition that Bilbo's decided to carry down from when his own family did the same for him when he was in his 20s, and so on so forth throughout the Baggins/Took line. I like to see it as Bilbo's way of officially welcoming Frodo into the family as well as into his life
