"pearl arguing that gem technically betrayed her because scar teamed up with her while gem tried to kill the mounders… hang on why is she kind of cooking" she's nawt cooking she's burning the kitchen but she doesn’t know it yet. i think here is where it gets more obvious that the two of them have severe communication barriers going on between them like what. but also i lowkey want to see pearl say that to gem just to watch gem absolutely lose her mind i think that would be a very enriching experience for me (not for them tho)

i think one of the reasons i never even considered gem feeling betrayed is because i almost exclusively watch pearl’s pov, and pearl took what seemed to me the best course of action. and as she pointed out, no matter what she did she would’ve been betraying someone anyway.

let’s consider her two options in the SL finale:

scar: has had no friends for the whole season, agreed to become a mounder just before the finale fight, has constantly been checking up on pearl throughout the whole battle

gem: teamed with scott (the only guy pearl hates), has been trying to kill the mounders the whole time

i think the emphasis here is that pearl felt she had no “real” attachment or commitment to gem. they weren’t day one allies, no debts were owed, they only paired up because they’re them. so that’s pearl’s argument, that she technically didn’t owe gem any loyalty.

but, of course, we know that’s nonsense. gem and pearl refused to fight each other in the finale until the very end, and had already been hanging out and formed an unofficial alliance before the finale. gem considers that enough to count as a bond, that, if broken, can be regarded as a betrayal.

now anon, the point you’re making is that pearl is clearly not getting gem. and i agree. but that’s just part of their characters. not to say pearl thought any less of their relationship in SL than gem did, but ohh my god she functions almost exactly like smajor in terms of allies. day one allies above everything, and since they all died, the second best option is not the one that you’ve spent two episodes running around the server with, but the one that you impromptu announced a mounder (i’d go on about dl!pearl/sl!scar parallels here but that’s another post) just to make it somehow fit into neat little boxes because you don’t want to make it seem that, god forbid, your feelings could ever precede your loyalty. god forbid anyone (most of all you) think that what you want is more important than what’s right. she’s so logical about it too which i’m guessing would infuriate gem

gem’s perspective is as biased as pearl’s is. she’s angry and bitter and the memory is still raw. and since it was her first season, she has no idea what pearl is like. she wasn’t there for last life or double life. she doesn’t know if pearl just follows her whims or sticks by the unwritten rules. so it’s like woah miscommunication mentioned! also why she doesn’t get just how much pearl and scott love/hate each other

honestly what i was referring to in the original post is that when hearing pearl’s train of thought out loud, it kind of makes sense? cc!pearl thinks through c!pearl’s emotions and principles very well and i love it because it keeps c!pearl generally consistent. i love it. i love how she’s so devoted to gem she can’t even make herself hate her. i kind of live for that

Can you tell I’ve been on a nostalgic rewatch.

1. Logan/Quinn from Zoey 101. The OG teenbop enemies to lovers omg I stan. When they pronounced their love for each other at the season finale at the prom, screaming crying throwing up. The way they get together is so random lmao he calls her hot and they kiss then Michael rides by on a horse like what? But the pay off and ending was so *chefs kiss*

2. Courtney/Duncan from TDI. They were everything to me and Cartoon Network ruined it. First season the bantering, the flirting. When I tell you I was hooked. The scream I scrumpt when they finally kissed (also me didn’t she just throw up but whatever I guess) then she left and it was all downhill from there.

3. Rose/Jake from ADJL. The Romeo and Juliet of this paring needs to be studied. They were so down bad for each other. When Jake found out she was huntsgirl then when she found out. Their first kiss being right before she had to ‘kill’ him for sport in an arena. Her giving up her life to keep him and his family safe, him giving up her to keep her safe. 😭😭😭 they don’t make em like they used too

4. Draco/Harry from HP. The ship that started it all. Before this I’d never read a slash fic before is it even still called that. Anyways this right here is my longest going ship I’m still into only reason it’s not higher is that I love the other ones more. You get so many variations of this, from the super toxic fic, to the I’ve always secretly loved you, to the meet up after the war is over and so on and so forth. Ugh I love it. There’s like 50,000 fics of them on a03 and I know I’ve read like half at least 🤣

5. Zuko/Katara from Avatar. My second non canon ship on here. When I tell you I was obsessed with them. Sigh then I discovered other fandoms and by the time I came back to them I was just done. Which I think comes fromm just not being as much of a Zuko fan anymore. This ship was gold, tho, I mean come on I’ll save you from the pirates how can I not. The way he jumped in front of her (obviously he’d do the same for everyone but like listen it ate down bad) the whole crystal caverns episode was fuel to the fire, the writers/creators knew what they were doing

6. Jake/Miley from Hannah Montana. Another OG omg she hated him so much. The flirty the snark then they had to kiss and both of em were like oh hot damn. They were so cute together and I will forever hate Disney for making her choose Jake just for him to cheat on her like what was the reason. What was the reason 😭😭

7. Alejandro/Heather from TDI. Woo child buckle up. This is one of those slowburns cause it’s not until like a quarter in to the season you’re like hold up. Are they going where I think they’re going and then they did. I don’t like the ending cause seriously wtf was the point. But the lead up and bruh the stuck in a hole song I still sing that on a daily. They were literally made for each other.

8. Chad/Sonny from Sonny with a Chance: one thing about Disney they ate down when it comes to enemies to lovers, or annoyance to like, whatever you wanna call it. Chad Dylan Cooper and Sonny omg the drama was beautiful, they hated each other so much and when they started dating I bout passed out. Lol they were so hilarious together I miss it.

9. Raven/Beastboy from TT. This and next two aren’t super enemies to lovers, more live annoyances or belligerent sexual tension. But I really was obsessed with this, like I was the girl reading Terra bashing fics 😭😭 they were so cute, the Beast Within was ship gold, Nevermore, the fact that she holds onto to the penny he gives her when she ‘dies’ and oh he only turns into the Beast again to protect her from Slade and never again. Beautiful

10. Jimmy/Cindy from JN. They may have only been nine but sheesh the rivalry to lovers or in this case crushes was intense. Cindy was down bad since day one but she hid that shit so well. The Valentine’s Day episode still makes me giggle like a kid. And the last episode where they’re legit just straight up flirting with each other I can not. When she almost confesses when he’s the orange hulk. So cute.

Finished Sweet Home in one night because tradition demanded it (I did the same with the season one)

Here some thoughts:

•It kinda hit me how all the casualties in the first chapter, at least in that scene, they were caused not by the monster but by the army trying to kill it. Even if he hadn't killed or even hurt anyone. It protected a child and returned her to her mother. It is as if from the beginning they want to tell us "now this is the world we live in. Is this what we have become or what we always have been?"

•I whish Hyun Su could have had more screen time, I mean, he is the main character...his face appears at the middle of the poster...he is literally the bridge that unites monsters and humanity. But I also know they needed to show how things were with Eun Yoo and the others in the refuge. However we could have had glimpse of lab stuff, Wooi Myung/ Yi Kyungs husband past, and so.

•I am so invested on creating theories about Hyun Su's monster form psychology. Like it kinda looks like a wing, but why a wing? Why just one? What even was Hyun Su's deep wish? (I think it was that everyone disappeared) So, what does that have to do with his monster form?

Also. How can he fly with it? Huh. Not that I'm complaining tho, it looks cool.

The strangers to apocalypse friends to apocalypse lover-enemies it's apparently what I needed.

Evil Hyun Su had enough with the baby steps. I don't understand how they thought leaving us like...that was a good plan. Guess I will have to wait half a year to find out.

If these two (three¿) don't get more screen time in season 3 I'm really, really, throwing hands. They were so cute in season 1 and now we know he has been watching over her all this time??

Tell me that that's not cute as hell.

It kinda shattered my soul when after saving her from falling into the well she kept trying to get to him and he "drew a line" with his wing. And she was going to keep trying. I'm not fine. And for the record, I never was.

•The kid....is she annoying? Yes, she is. But what she has of annoying she also has of interesting. Like how is she possible? Why?

From what I know and remember Yi Kyung was pregnant. That's all. They better do some explaining there in s3.

•I can't help to find parallels between her and Yeong Su. They are both young and traumatized. They hold very little knowledge of the world and for them is more than enough. Angry with their moms and adults/humans and they will make it everyone's problem.

•Eun Hyuk appearing at the very end of the final chapter with smirking villain vibes has me on a chokehold.

Suddenly I remembered that I have to go through deep academic stress for mid-2024 to arrive.

I re-read Purple Hibiscus this week and it touched where it needed to touch. I remember first reading it when I was really really young and saw it in our family bookshelf (my father bought Adichie's novels out of an Igbo pride, I'm not sure he ever read any of them, he never had the time). As I read it back, I was assessing Jaja's character a lot, anticipating what I remembered as him being the murderer of his father. Yet I was taken aback when I read to realise that it had been his mothers doing all along. I guess my assumption was based on the fact that I remembered Jaja's defiance a lot. The first few pages of the book starts and describes Things falling apart, which to me is so iconic for its Rememory. The rememory works on many levels. First as a nod to our ancestor Chinua Achebe, whose own prolific novel Things fall Apart forms as a root for our Hibiscus. Then secondly, in the actual memory that is described as the first scene, the fact that we start in a future just to rewind to the past... The fragmentation almost seems like a necessity in the breaking away from and within oppression. I remember the first scene a lot because it struck me. I wonder why Jaja's defiance is so focalised in the novel tho, perhaps for the plot twist? Yet, I wish the mother's courage was more defined, I wish we got to peek more into her mind and memory of when things truly began to fall apart. I wonder why her own refusal still seems to keep her in misery, the fact that even when she confesses to the murder, no one can even give her that acknowledgment of power and overcoming. Her son simply takes the blame and is somehow more of a hero than his own mother who seems imprisoned by her own dispair. Even her further defiance of refusing to follow traditional burial rites for her husband is barely seen as refusal, apparently she gets a pass because people believe she is mad with grief. They think she's so mad she believed she killed her own husband... Chai, she deserved more agency in her refusals, she deserved more depth within the madness. Sweet Kambili sha, sharing her lover, Father Amadi, with God... I pray she heals as I think she parallels her own mother, who also had to compete with God for the love of her husband. The God here is still a man, he is a master and a heavinly white father that cloaks his brute nature as a saviorism that grants illusions of respectability, progress and perfection. He is a god of shame, and perfection haunts an imperfect world, allowing for men who claim to be of his image (because our God is a father not a mother) to move in an authority that subjugates everyone but themselves. Today my own father told me the saying that goes: Men suffer, while women live to feel the pain. Is suffering that much of an action? how does one numb their suffering away from feelings? or is it that they exert their own suffering onto others in a way that dignifies them and absolves them of any feeling? - many questions and much thoughts... I read many parts of myself through the lines of this novel, I read parts of my people also. The name Kambili means: Let me live and I want to do just that. I can't wait to write my own rememory in a garden of Purple hisbiscus waiting to fall apart

Breathing in deeply he replied

Reiner struggled to speak for a few seconds before sighing. "the amor titan, the one who tore the wall down, this is gonna sound like im off my head but....the amor titan, was, that was me." he quietly said looking down at the land below. his head shot up when the sound of laughter broke the silence.

"Reiner, please don't joke about that, buttt you did get a laugh out of me. Can you imagine it tho? me loving the guy that destroyed my life? good one babe, lets head in its getting late and we have training tomorrow." you said standing up and descending the wall. Reiner stayed at the top watching you zip past the buildings, guilt still laced his stomach.

I was thinking about what you said last night. please tell me that was a joke and you were pulling my leg?" your eyes had a look of desperation behind them, wanting what he said to be a joke. when he looked down in shame that was all you needed to know.

"Oh my god, oh my fucking god Reiner. you can't be fucking serious!" "Please y/n you need to listen I-" "shut the fuck up Reiner!" you cut him off. "You never thought of telling me!" you were so angry and betrayed you couldn't even understand how the guy you've laid with could become one of.... them. your Reiner, your lover, your best friend.

"I have thought of telling you I just never had the right time too; no moment was good. s3 morgana being "beyond redemption" is soooooo crazy to me like yeah trying to kill the evil tyrant king whos been murdering every last one of your kind is sooooo evil lock her up and throw away the key!!

such a prime example of a kick the dog character too. like they cant condemn her for just fighting for her right to exist so they have her executing civilians and trying to have gwen executed to make her into the villian.

and! the same goes for morgause! literally what did she ever do wrong? uther conquered camelot (said by him in the episode where gili fights in the tournament) and then executed hundreds if not thousands of people with magic but morgause trying to kill the king is a step too far? why? its almost like the show is actually on uthers side 🤨🤨🤨🤨

which leads me to: the fact that we essentially watch the entire show through the pendragon perspective. merlin protects arthur so everything we learn about the purge and magic and the old religion is from uther/gaius. so, biased, to say the least. one of the most important things they tell you when researching history is to consider where your information is coming from and how that persons perspective influences their discussion of it.

which is why i also dont consider nimueh to be a villain. shes an activist! yeah she tried to kill arthur that one (?) time but he didnt even die so. doesnt count <3 but we SEE her having a conversation ALONE with uther where she says she didnt know what would happen to ygraine and i just cant imagine why she would lie. if she really wanted to hurt him she could have said she'd known and killed her on purpose but i dont think thats the case at all. she says she never would have helped him if she'd known what would happen. like, surprise, if you hunt and kill people for the crime of existing they will fight back and its not going to be the way you like it and innocent people will die. because thats war. you ruthlessly slaughter her people and she will slaughter yours.

worlds most unstructered post. professors hate her. anyway the show eventually starts to take on a very firm, "merlin has magic but ues not LIKE those other magic users therefore hes ok :) everyone else is evil tho. except the druids (sometimes :|)", whereby merlin using magic is only allowed if hes helping or saving arthur (except all those other times but we dont talk about those i guess) and his stance on magic eventually warps until hes just kind of horrible about it.

100% unpopular opinion but gaius should have died in s2 or 3. he influenced merlin far too much and basically never for the better. sorry to gaius lovers but i do NOT like that old man. he advises merlin EVERY time to not tell morgana about her magic (which she has no control over and therefore is manifesting in ways that will absolutely get her caught), to never help any of the unfairly persecuted people of the episode or even to use magic at all. hes a bootlicking coward who only helped people he cared for or when it suited him. how many people do you think he watched burn simply because he didnt agree with the way they used magic, whether it actually "evil" or not.

merlin's only friends who know about his magic are an old conservative man and a guy who dies right when merlin could have used the support of someone to help him "come out" to arthur about his magic.

im firmly of the opinion that had he told morgana about his magic everything would have been literally fine. because alone and with loterally no support system at all, is it any wonder that morgana would go down the road she did? after years of fear and watching people just like her be burned for the crime of existing, with no prophecy or friends to tell her that it wont always be this way. you dont have to be afraid because youre not the only one and i wont let anything happen to you. oh wait. she did get told that. by MORGAUSE. not about the prophecy but how can they be judged by trying to bring about change by themselves. by trying to kill a king whos killed so many of their own people.

if the intention of the show had been to give a poignant message about the cycle of abuse (morgana succumbing to bitterness and hatred just like uther) or how fear can control you (merlin eventually becoming essentially the bad guy, judging everybody who doesnt use magic the way he sees fit, staying silent and contributing to persecution of magic people because living in fear can make you paranoid and bitter (sound familiar?)) then i would applaud because wow did that make me fucking cry! and hit actually very close to home! and it was tragic and horrible but also inevitable

but as far as i can tell that was not at all the point, because in the end kilgharrah tells merlin the prophecy has been fulfilled, albion is united and magic returned! hurrah! but. um. did i miss something? when did that happen? oh, you mean when gwen is queen....? so.... gwen unites the land of albion and returns magic to the land? except, merlin seems to have lived on until the 21st century of our world and magic is not what i would call flourishing atm.

5 headcanons for a krakenverse AU where Tamaki's mother married First instead of All for One. (Playing it safe with the weaker but less evil brother.) Tamaki is their son.

Ehehehe

1- Amaji has an interesting definition of playing it safe, because AfO killed his brother's lover Second (and possibly his next and last lover Third idk but either way 100% murdered lover rate) but when she manages to catch First alone to explain it, he agrees- it'd be political, but it would hopefully offer protection to Ozoko and freedom to First, as long as he spent some time both in the city and back with his brother.

2- AfO protests, naturally, even citing that he should be married before his little brother, but First points out he had centuries to do that before he was even born and didn't, so he lost his chance.(Shame about Sorahiko, I suppose) Knowing his brother will try to kill Amaji anyway, he also tells him that they plan to magically seal their lives together- if Amaji dies, so does he, and vice versa. The catch here tho, is to do this, they'd need someone somehow related to both of them by blood. (This is related to the spell and method in krakenverse canon that keeps AfO from even lifting a hand to his relatives, but less powerful) As they do not share any relatives, Amaji and First would need to make one... Fortunately for Amaji (on a time crunch because AfO would kill her long before nine months were up) and First (gay), witchcraft exists!

3- which, I guess, makes their marriage technically also a shotgun wedding? Ok sure why not. AfO grits his teeth and says they must really love each other to do that, but he can't not attend the wedding, and when he sees the little tiny Tamaki he decides he really needs to find a way to brainwash Amaji so he can have his brother back... And his little nephew, who's adorable (his hair is lighter here, closer to Nejire's shade) and a potential heir to the throne of Ozoko. Which means he has to play nice, to ensure they are within his home and not the city as much as possible

4- he also just... Acts like Tamaki is named after him. He tries to get his pods to treat him special so he prefers it to the city aquatics, but Tamaki is as shy about the obvious and forced coddling as he is getting sideways looks, so he hates both and he especially hates how his uncle keeps forgetting his name, even if he's the only one who is honest about considering Tamaki weak and ill suited for the city. Instead of drawing this towards the Kraken like AfO hopes, it draws him further into his own room in Ozoko, reluctant to ever leave and worrying First, who can't imagine trapping yourself with so much potential freedom right there.

5- AfO, frustrated that what he considers "playing nice" isn't working, wonders if getting married himself would solve the problem, get First to visit more, perhaps a child would draw Tamaki out. He thinks about suitable options, but there's not really anyone. Inko was pretty, but she got married to someone on land, poor tastes just like her mother. The rest of the pod isn't really attractive either, and if he picks one of his more violent and loyal followers, his brother will never want to visit.

As he muses on the issue, Amaji and First lead their son up to the surface to meet Queen Inko and her boys, slightly desperate to get the kid some positive socialization since neither the Kraken's territory nor the city seem viable options.

Asorted thoughts on this very extense and well written chapter:

(this is a very long post you guys. it happens)

-Deborah should know by now not to visit her regular places

-on a symbolic plane, Catholic rites endanger her, literally put her in a vulnerable physical position (we have seen how catholicism can be a crutch for Patrick, pushing him to pasivity)(Deborah is always more active, but this time she is literally led by her faith to a place her captors know she frequents, and she herself is lying flat against the ground, which gives her captors physical dominace over her)

-Once again, the intelligence of the character is not entirely consistent, the scene tho, is very effective and evocative (deborah has watered the stones of the church floor with her tears. Her captors don't respect anything, it's the whole idea of profanation, not only of a temple but of a sacred moment)

-they blindfold her, cover her with one of her capes and shove her into a carriage. Reminds me a lot of accounts of people who were illegally detained, it all rings true. Once agin this is the (monarchic) state employing tactics of criminals.

-Deborah never gives up mentally, refuses to walk and has to be pushed, uses her eloquence to persuade the guards to let her live for the sake of her child (a smart rhetoric tactic, since her captors don't care about her, maybe they will doubt helping kill her if they know she is pregnant)

-Borel's narrator acts as if we don't know what we learnt last chapter (she is not going to be killed, she is sent to the king's brothel) giving the reader the upper hand over Debbie.

-However we don't know if her persuasivve speech has worked, we are as blind as her. She shakes and cries out in disgust as she recieves a succession of kisses on her cheeks and mouth. The person who just did that is a woman, who tells her she is safe and surrounded by people who love her. We guess this is the Madame. Her current tactic after kissing her against her will is being verbally soft and respectful, minding protocol and her title.

-Deborah is still blindfolded, not allowed to learn the structure of the place she is imprisioned in, yet the narrator shows us she is paying attention to what she can percieve as she follows the madame through the building (stairs, counting the sounds of locks, etc)

-Once inside her well furnished bedchamber-cum-cell, her blindfold is removed. Her two servants are incredibly ugly old men, very polite as well, dressed in Green, a color that has been highlighted in the narrative in relation to the clothes of Villepastour and the Knight of Youth. Beauty, mundanity and sexuality connects Villepastour and the perhaps more positive (and less pusilanimous) but also deadly Knight, so it's valid to connect the servants with them. They all serve the same credo. (it would be clever, even if nothing points to this, if in a Der Blaue Engel twist, the servants were past Villepastours, former discarded lovers of Pompadour, reduced to serfdom and watchdog status)

-A feast is brought to her room (the idea is to make her lower her guard) she is famished and parched but doesn't touch even a glass of water (the theme of the pure heroine resisting worldy temptations, seen in many fairytales) She suspects the food is poisoned but I imagine also a kind of repugnance from anything that came from her captors, accepting the food is in a way, playing by their rules. A dueña (duègne in french, a chaperone) undresses her and introduces her into her bed. (We are now in a bifurcation, Deborah enters one of the types of prisons for women -> the royal Brothel, we will perhaps see a prison for men, if Patrick has survived his illegal arrestation)

-Deborah tries to guess where she is, relying on what she heard and smelt on the carriage, and what she has seen and how she was treated in the mansion. (this once again, reads absolutely verosimile if one compares it with accounts of people who have been kidnapped or illegally imprisoned, Borel is well documented and it shows. Once again, it is interesting that he chooses to give us this insight with Deborah and not with Patrick. Borel wants us to stay with Deborah and like her, believe that Patrick is dead and she is all alone)

-She concludes she has been kidnapped and taken to one of Villepastour's retirement houses (nobles used to have smallish mansions to keep mistresses/sexual servants, sometimes literally trapped with no chance to leave... not really different from forced sexual labor) Her guess is as we know, partially wrong but very close to the truth. and if Villepastour hadn't spoken would Pompadour had remembered to take revenge on her?

-{i think it's fair to say that the king in this novel is like the king in chess. He is not at all the most powerful piece in the board. He does evil and has no qualms about it -as we will see- but everything has to be arranged for him, he must be served in all orders. He doesn't even know who Deborah is, so people around him can definitely use him for their petty revenges. It's not that he's a dupe (even if Pompadour is the mastermind of the novel) it's just that he is lazy, even the hard work behind his "fun" must be arranged by others}

-Deborah regrets not having stolen a knife from the table. She is far from defeated mentally, she'd rather die fighting.

-She avoids sleeping to be alert, opens the window. The fresh air revives her (nature comes to her aid against the evils of men) she sticks her head against the door to try and hear anything to avoid being surprised, but also, to learn anything that might be informative.

-once again the dueñas enter her room and manipulate her body while she still sleeps, putting her some pretty slippers on. She is now a doll, with little to no bodily autonomy. She is taken to a bathroom (the narrator still takes Debbie's pov, she is trying to ammass as much details of the place she is in as she can) She is put inside the bathtub (Borel cleverly uses passive voice to show us how she is being treated, gently but forcefully, and sorpresively. She cannot anticipate her servant/gaoler's movements and they are strong enough to lift her and move her like furniture)

-Enter a woman in a robe who deborah recognizes by the sound of her voice as the woman who has kissed her the night before.

-Enter the portrayal of queer persons -lesbians were a privileged subject- in french Romanticism to this particular book. How does Borel does it, in contrast to his peers? Physically there is nothing ordinary about her, Borel barely spends a line on how she looks like, it's how she acts that interests him. Borel is to be commended for this, there is nothing constitutive, physically essentialist about her queerness. What's important is that she is a mature woman of “vulgar”figure, with very refined manners. We conclude, probably a working class woman, nothing remarkable in her apereance, who has learnt the refined manners of her bosses. (I would love to compare her with Passereau, the beautiful and hispanic looking little sparrow who is confused with a male prostitute by the men gathering under the gay cruising spot aka the Boar in the Tuilleries, but I need to reread Passereau, all I can think of rn is, although Passereau isn't foreign he -like Borel- is thought to be, and remember how many of Vautrin's boyfriends are italian or corsican, even if vautrin himself is extremely ??? north of france looking with his flaming red hair, it is not unfrequent to “foreignize” homosexuality, even by authors who were queer themselves, like balzac, and very possibly Borel as well)

-I need at this point to bring up the Mother Superior in the Sainte-Eutrope Convent from Diderot's La Réligièuse. She and the Madame have some things in common. The Superior basically does the rounds undressing and bathing and forcing herself -sometimes, she is desired by some- on her novices and nuns. Her physical portrayal is similar to Borel's she is basically unremamrkable looking, of extreme sensitivity, a little fat but there's no Phrenology going on here, from either author. Although the Superior abuses her power she is not a rapist of the violent kind, I think the Mother Superior actually believes Suzanne loves her back, and she is incredibly surprised when Suzanne, right after making her orgasm, cries out for help because she thinks the Superior is sick)(this is fine erotic writing by old Denis, the prologuist of my penguin edition complains Suzanne is too inocent to be believeble, I personally buy it)(this book needs rereading though)

-Borel highlights her mouth (something that Balzac does in Théodore Calvi's -one of his corsican homosexual bandits, and a personal favorite of mine- introduction, and Hugo does with the very likely male prostitute Montparnasse. Borel does a close up shot of her lips, her honeyed mouth, she is savouring every word she says, to make Deborah trust her but also alludes to an excess of sensuality same as Diderot's Mother Superior)

-what follow is a long and interesting dialogue with Deborah and her. Both women are written as intelligent and trascend their stock roles of pure heroine and perverse gay madame.

I'll make use of cam's translation here:

“The interest that is being taken in me is too violent, madame; it is an indiscreet and insulting zeal which I fault and reject. But may I at least know who professes such an exorbitant benevolence towards me? In whose name was I led to this shelter? what is this shelter and what fate is awaiting me here?”

“(...)Answer me, am I here in a state prison?” “Does this residence, mylady, resemble a dungeon? and me, do I look like a gaoler?” “Could I be in a convent?” “Maybe.”

(that maybe...Even if couvent in french doesn't connote brothel like in elizabethan english, Borel invites us to find the similarities between both institutions)

-Deborah is correct in her intuitive association between the royal whorehouse and a prison.

-Borel's narrator illustrates the madame's thought process when Deborah begs for more concrete answers. Characterizing her as a bohemian, (une fine bohême, with an ^ instead of an `) a romani woman (we are perhaps getting exotification of homosexuality as foreign here?) and “fine” she is indeed, she is very sharp and makes the lies she tells appear like confidences the “élèves” have forced her to make. So she invents a story about a suposed benefactor (the Count of Gonesse) who heard about Deborah's enemies and vulnerable position and has taken her so that she can enjoy a confortable and safe life in seclusion, and throw herself freely into “the voluptuosness of pain and melancholy”. Deborah doesn't even believe the Count to exist. If he does, she demands to be told what does he want from her, what are his plans concerning her...(the "why me" moment) The idea behind the Madame's answer is to make Deborah believe her benefactor wants to win her heart and marry her later on, so that she accepts the king's “visits” meekly and with a false sense of hope.

-Deborah ofc doesn't want to marry again (least of all, marry an unknown man who is forcing her into a sense of indebtedness and gratitutde) this setback makes the madame think of starting Deborah's education aka having sex with her, (the king, Borel tells us, is fooled, he only gets the crumbs the Madame leaves for him) She tries to get Deborah naked, but she holds her clothes back. She gets chided for her modesty (only ugly women should be modest, the madame claims, while groping her body and describing it through metaphors, marble like breasts, her silouette, as curvaceous as a vase, something @sainteverge has noticed is a reccurring theme in her descriptions) Borel is in fact very explicit, breaking the boundaries that usually constrain fellow “serious” novelists who avoid explicit sex scenes even when the plot would require them. Borel lets us know the madame was kissing deborah's breasts and was in fact about to give her oral, when Deborah stops her by holding her forehead away from her crotch.

-the madame appologizes but asks Deborah to understand she wants to earn her love, while she laments not being a man, in order to please her. (mentioning this bc wanting to change genders is another favorite theme for the Fr Romantics... homosexuality seems linked in this period to a kind of transexuality)

-Deborah is said to not be able to understand sex between women. Although she finds the Madame's stares sexually charged, can only link them with how Patrick touches her/looks at her, she is still in the dark. Reminiscent of Diderot's Suzanne Simonin whose body the Superior uses to reach orgasm, and she never understands what is happening to the other woman. (it must be said that Borel calls lesbianism a depravation*. Diderot links it to an illness-no comments- he however, thinks he is being sympathetic)

* there are many instances in this book where Borel asumes a moralistic writing style, such as when he describes Pompadour’s sex apron,,,

-An interesting point is that art is what allows Deborah to understand homosexuality. Pornography in a wold where gayness isn't talked about openly is the only point of reference she can have. This is very interesting (consider vautrin, speaking of his sexuality constantly in terms of references from the books he has read, only once porn in his case)

-another interesting detail, re the dynamics of this prison: Deborah has the keys to her own room (cell) so she locks herself in. She proceeds to break everything in it, especially the porn on the walls and shelves of her library (if you haven't watched the Handmaiden (2016) yet, watch The Handmaiden, it's the closest thing to a madame putiphar adaptation we have without it being one) She makes a huge ruckus, throws boooks, porcelain figurines the whole shebang in a cathartic explosion, out of the window. The madame begs to be let in, begs for Deborah not to break anything else. Deborah confronts her, she is in a brothel and she is a madame. The Madame still tries to deny it all, insists with the story of Gonesse, but Debbie still doesn't open her door, so the madame summons brute force (once again as in many moments of this book, people are persuaded first by kindness then by brute force to submit to the hegemony) a soldier is summoned to break the door down, Debbie stands her ground. after calling her a madwoman, a thankless madwooman who pays back with insanity the kind treatment she was given, the men start pounding on the door, they break it down but face a barricade of furniture, Deborah yells she will jump out of the window if they even cross it. The Madame begs the soldiers to stop bc Debbie is in fact capable of keeping her word and the blame would fall on her. The battle is won by Deborah who is sieged inside her room with enough food to last a few days...

Actually more like friends to crushes to betrayal to Winifred being scared shitless of him for awhile while he tries to charm his way back into her heart type deal

Okay but before all of that, they were joined at the hip for the majority of Winifred's stay in Liyue during the whole Morax murder situation

Winifred definitely didn't trust him at first, but his strange personality absolutely won her over very quickly

Low-key she was too blinded by her crush to realize how sketchy he actually was

But that's okay because he ended up really liking her back on accident

This man spoiled her while they were in Liyue. Where do you think she got the silk flower from?

HE JUST KEPT BUYING HER SNACKS CAN YOU BLAME HER FOR FALLING FOR HIM????

His nickname for her is "Stormy" and while she hates that nickname now, she'd low-key give anything to hear it in an endearing way again

Tartaglia being Tartaglia, he absolutely used that nickname against her when they fought in the Golden House

But Tartaglia being Tartaglia, battle is a weirdly intimate thing for him and though betraying Winifred hurt a little bit for him, he's trying so hard to understand the pain it caused her so he can make things right again

She doesn't make the best drinking partner thanks to her low tolerance, but that does not stop her from trying to one up Kaeya every time

She just keeps falling over after like 2 drinks and Kaeya finds it absolutely hilarious

Kaeya is Winifred's mentor, but seriously, you would never be able to guess with how much they just hang out and drink together like besties

She actually used to have a big ass crush on Kaeya before she met Tartaglia because UGH

UNREQUITED LOVE Y'ALL

He loves her in his own way, just not romantically

But that's okay, she got over her crush and is just thankful to have him in her life

No but seriously, these two would die for one another

He's actually extremely protective of her, especially after the Liyue shenanigans

If S. Meyer wrote a prequel trilogy to Twilight about the tragically doomed love between Aro and Carlisle (except she wouldn't because her homoeroticism is never allowed to be text, only subtext, but let's pretend she became friends with Anne Rice who I think is maybe dead idk?)

Alright, we start out with Romeo and Juliet. It's already a stretch, but everyone stretches that one. We have two star crossed lovers who face obstacles based off of who they are/where they come from, Bella is from a rival family, there's a romantic rival who isn't really a romantic rival who dies, Bella and Edward elope despite the wishes of their family, Edward murders Jacob after Jacob murders Emmett, Edward believes Bella is dead and so goes to kill himself, Bella then kills herself in despair upon waking up to his dead body.

Well, Meyer got at least some of it in there.

We at least have the suicide because mistaken belief of death in there. That's one of the big ones.

Anyways, we stay on Romeo and Juliet for a while and then we end up with Wuthering Heights. Where Bella and Edward are just like Heathcliffe and Cathy because they're both self-centered destructive people because--we never actually get a reason. We're just kind of told it. Bella likes Wuthering Heights, therefore, it's just like her love story with Edward (while Edward stands there, frowning, because he doesn't want to be like Romeo or Heathcliffe).

Now, could be Bella as a character, being seventeen, does shit like, "Oh wow, Edward, we're just like the lovers in my favorite play/book" and will just project onto different stories when she feels like it. Even though they're nothing like that.

But we're playing Doyalist for the moment which means Meyer really wants to allude to literature while putting in 0 effort.

So, honestly, whatever the fuck Meyer wants.

We're told that their love story is just like Pride and Prejudice. See, Aro's very proud and won't leave the diet, which makes Carlisle prejucdice... No, this fits too well.

We're told that their love story is just like Emma. Aro accidentally sets up Carlisle with Marcus and then hates himself because he set up the guy he actually wanted with Marcus and now he has to...

No, that's too funny to resist.

It's just like Casablanca. Because this is set in the prequels, Carlisle hasn't left yet, the pair are still in Paris and there's no hint of Esme anywhere on the horizon. There's no backdrop of Casablanca for that matter either or Rick's American Cafe. Neither have either of the characters seen a film that won't be made for centuries. It has nothing to do with Casablanca.

Can u help me understand something as I am new to this series there are some things that confuses me.

I think Will doesn't love hannibal as much as Hannibal loves Will . Yeah I understand he chose him after everything Hannibal had done but he always makes this decision at the end and after that he tries to justify his actions he is not always 100% sure with his decisions. He literally threw them off the cliff after some seconds of acceptance. Tbh I guess I fall on the minority when I say he really irritates me . I still feel hannibal's love and devotion is deeper than Will's.

Just my opinion tho

Second question was he was really jealous of Bedelia because of his underlying feelings or it was just him feeling salty that she wasn't as scared as he was .

I have a very long post about the different ways in which Will and Hannibal express love here. I'll copy the TLDR part: Hannibal is more open about himself and his feelings, including love, hence he doesn’t have many challenges with admitting it. Will is closed off, stiff, and emotionally repressed, so he expresses his feelings in a much more subtle way.

Will has gone through a long, painful journey. He went from hiding from emotions and deflecting to not denying and carefully acknowledging them. We don’t hear words “love” or “in love” from him in relation to Hannibal because Will is not that kind of person. He doesn’t use these words freely, and for him, every small emotional step is a struggle. He tried to deceive himself and other numerous times; he tied to deny the truth and manipulate his own mind, but with each season, his feelings for Hannibal became more and more explicit. Will reaching out for physical contact, Will saying “It’s beautiful” are his way of saying, “I ached for you. I love you.”

So, I think his feelings are equally strong, he just doesn't express them in the same way. If there was S4, I'd expect Will to keep making progress and to start showing Hannibal how much he loves him more openly. Hannibal truly needs to see how adored he is, he might be emotionally starved at this point, after so many years.

He also said that he loves how "bitchy Will and Bedelia are to each other" and that they consider each other as "the other woman in Hannibal's life."

Just one conversation example from the show:

Will: You didn't lose yourself, Bedelia, you just crawled so far up his ass you couldn't be bothered - personal, targeted against Bedelia's attachment to Hannibal.

Will: You hitched your star to a man commonly known as a monster. You're the Bride of Frankenstein - personal attack with romantic connotation. Bedelia catches up on it and mocks him:

Bedelia: We've both been his bride. Have you been to see him?

Will: Yes.

Bedelia: Haven't learned anything, have you? Or did you just miss him that much?

Will: Have you been to see him? - jealously-personal again. Will wants to know if Bedelia is keeping contact with Hannibal. It's all about her relationship with Hannibal.

His aggression toward her and the extent of it is the reason why I think he was the initiator behind the attack on her that we see in a post-credits scene. He needed reassurance that Hannibal is capable of killing her, something he could never do to Will.
