I’ve had a wild thought.

You know how the duck was missing from the Federation video where they were explaining the Cucurucho cookies? This is a crazy theory, but after Purgatory and the Eye being ElQuackity, I wonder if the duck is Quackity-like, it’s a similar thing.

Like. Think about it.

We know that Quackity is in hell or limbo or whatever and there’s that theory floating around about how he’s in a coma (the constant beating we’ve heard in the background of his streams is totally a heart monitor) and I just- the thought hit me and wouldn’t leave me alone.

There’s too much of a coincidence for me with Quackity possibly being in a coma and the Federation duck being absent at the same time. Quackity is the duck and I don’t know how to feel about it.

Every time with PPPPPP I keep thinking "am I reading too much into this" (-> probably -> who knows! -> no way to confirm now!). Today, I'm really impressed with how much the volume extras of volume 7 & 8 pack a punch despite them being really really simple. So I'm going to read (too much) into it again x_x

Volume 7 covers the end of the 4v4 piano battle, Chocho's death and its direct aftermath (ch 53 - 61).

After each chapter there's an extra page that's blank save for a stave with a single note like this, similar to the rings the sextuplets wear/wore:

(excuse the crappy phone quality, this twitter thread by @/ppppppupdates has the extras from all the volumes pulled from the digital versions which are much clearer. I've linked to a few of them here and there).

The first note is C (Do) and the note moves up the C major scale with each chapter. To me, this came off as "very ominous countdown". You reach the end of the chapter, turn a page and BAM, the note's crept up again. It took me out of it for a second while still building suspense and still maintaining the flow of the story. The last note is B (ti/shi). This happens after chapter 59, which is when Chocho dies. So the scale was counting down (ok, up) to Chocho's death, where the chapter ends on a "pi-----"/"beeeeep" sound effect.

I know the fact that the scale doesn't end on C probably has more to do with there only being 7 siblings + only 7 chapters preceding this moment, but I also like how the scale remains unfinished. Since the last note (B/ti) is the very unstable 7th degree in the scale my brain automatically wants the melody to resolve to C but it's cut short like Chocho's life is

(There are still two chapters in the volume after that but the extras are more like the previous volumes: Most of it is Sadame-centric, like the cover (little graphs depicting his ability, the acknowledgment page is a warped version of the electronics shop where Sadame and Meloli and the inside back cover is of Meloli and Sadame). Also, there's a conductor's baton for Furusu and the results of the popularity contest)

Volume 8 already immediately sucker punched me by having no one on this page. Then, in a break from the small drawings between chapters from previous volumes, each of those pages has a full-page portait of each sibling, starting with Reijiro, Mimin, Fanta (all smiling), then Sorachika, Don and Shikato and finally, after the final chapter-- a smiling Brilliant (?) Lucky dressed in the clothes he's wearing on the cover of volume 8.

The final extra pages are small items representing members of the Otogami family

Fanta + the three pairs of polyhedron earrings might refer to Sorachika, on an Shitako?

Sorachika (scarf), Shikato (apple) and Don (score)

Gakuon, though I think it also could be referring to Brilliant Lucky as he's also associated with the necklace and his portrait has him wearing it while Gakuon/Sorachika(?)'s hand reaches for it

Lastly, there's a melancholic acknowledgments page (a room almost completely empty except for a piano) and the back inside cover (depicting the end of a measure, quite a definitive "the end" imo)

Interestingly, none of the extras depict or refer to Mediocre Lucky (unless the final portrait is what would have been Lucky's final form after, idk, he and Brilliant Lucky accept each other). Maybe this is fitting because his only appearances in volume 8 are 1) passed out in the cemetery in chapter 64 and 2) in that rigid, almost caricature-like form in chapter 70 where he's banished to the darkness by Brilliant Lucky.

All in all I think these extras make the volume end on an even sadder note than chapter 70 did on its own. A lot of them just remind me of stuff that we won't get to see: A happy Brilliant Lucky never appears in the actual story-- the story ends with Brilliant Lucky lashing out in anger and rejecting Mediocre Lucky. And if that final portait is (Mediocre) Lucky himself, then it's also a version of Lucky that we never got to see-- Lucky didn't get this good ending. Even the personal items on the extra pages are split between "siblings Lucky has saved" and "siblings Lucky has not saved" (& Fanta): Arcs that we got vs. arcs that we never will get.

I feel like 'spoiler warning for Bittersweet' goes without saying for this sort of lore speculation, but SPOILER WARNING FOR BITTERSWEET

So, one question is whether every inhabitant of a given dream is a dreamer- was every person in a given setting once in Evalas, or just some of them? Because if it's the former, Withered!Finn's existence poses a bit of a problem. Given everyone dies eventually, based on what we currently know, it seems everyone in Evalas will eventually become a dreamer- but it makes no sense for Withered!Finn to a) be a dreaming Finn and b) be aware of/seek vengeance against Source!Finn- they shouldn't be able to exist simultaneously, since Source!Finn in Evalas should have to be dead for Withered!Finn to exist as a dreamer.

At first, I was considering the possibility that Withered!Finn isn't a dreamer, but some sort of construct within the dream- someone else's dream of Finn, rather than Finn within a dream, if that makes sense. And perhaps due to Source!Finn's interactions with the dreamers (such as through the meddling in my original post) Withered!Finn was granted agency and awareness of the dream. Idk, I know that doesn't entirely make sense, but we're inherently working with 25% of a puzzle here. This is all just guesswork.

But I've just gone back and listened to the "Milking The Truth Out Of Your Captured Yandere" audio- and two lines in particular jumped out at me.

First, there's a line where he refers to both himself and Orchid as "broken shards drifting through this cursed world". The imagery of broken glass- as might break into shards- is recurrent around Withered!Finn and, obviously, the upcoming Shattered series, as well as the end of the Evalas trailer. Source!Finn's power seems to be connected to mirrors somehow- when he rewound time in Bittersweet, Alphonse came to in front of a mirror, and we saw Source!Finn watching Auron through another mirror.

I was thinking a while ago about the name Source!Finn for Evalas!Finn- it struck me as not being immediately obvious why that name would be fitting. Not to be all 'baby's first internet essay', but Oxford dictionary defines source as "a place, person, or thing from which something originates or can be obtained". I think this is meant to imply a distinct relationship between Source!Finn and his AU counterparts than between Evalas versions of various characters and theirs- that is, that Finn is a unique case within the dream. His AU counterparts are not reincarnations of him within dreams, but distinct entities that, while originating from him, exist independently from him. If true, this would also support my theory of Orchid being a dreamer version of someone close to Source!Finn- or rather, an entity created in similar circumstances to Withered!Finn etc from another resident of Evalas. Someone aware of and/or capable of manipulating the dream, such as an assistant/fellow steward of Finn's would be the most likely candidate.

Obviously Withered!Finn is scheming something. The other line that struck me was him referring to his plans as something to "break the cycle and become whole". That's one I don't think we'll know what it means until Shattered comes out- but I think it's more evidence to Withered!Finn being some sort of fragment of Source!Finn.

I'm less confident in my initial hypothesis now, but I still think there might be something to it. That bit of ooc in the Yule video was definitely meant to be significant.

Finally got around to watching Bittersweet, and I've slowly been going through pretty much all of yuurivoice's original content. I'm just going to put some thoughts and theories here for posterity before Echoes and Shattered come out.

Generally speaking, I prefer to take a 'we'll know when we know' approach to these things, this is more about making possible connections.

So, the chapter 3 interlude. I think Finneas fucked with the dream Withered!Finn is native to somehow. He talks about 'tasting the comfort and peace' of the dream despite it being forbidden, and that not being meddlesome would require him to 'forsake all the love in his heart'. Withered!Finn seems to be aware of the multiverse, and is either trying to or is capable of travelling between worlds. We know from the Shattered teaser that he has beef with Finneas- and in one audio (i can't remember which unfortunately) he mentions something like Orchid being stolen from him. I'm connecting this to a moment in 'garden variety' Finn's Yule audio where he gets momentarily ooc about people not wanting peace 'getting out of his way'.

I think Finneas either took Withered!Finn's place in the latter's dream, or otherwise seperated him from Orchid. I think Orchid might be the dreamer of the Steward Finneas mentions- since it seems like the dreams are some sort of afterlife, and Finn mentions them being on opposite sides. It begs the question of what could motivate Finneas to meddle where he clearly knows he shouldn't.

I think either Withered!Finn was already Like That in his native dream, and Finneas intervened to save Orchid from him- if Orchid was someone who mattered to Finneas in their past life, it would explain why he would intervene in that instance- and why not being meddlesome would require him to 'forsake all the love in his heart'. Alternatively, Finneas took Withered!Finn's place out of pure selfishness, which is why Withered!Finn is Like That- yuuri mentioned in a Tumblr ask that Withered!Finn's pursuit of Orchid was a point of conception for him. The former explanation makes more sense to me given what we know about Finneas' character rn, but the latter would be more interesting from a moral/story standpoint- a wholly selfish act of an otherwise selfless man. Finneas has been described as morally complex iirc.

None of this explains why Finneas' felt the need to intervene in the events of Bittersweet- but I don't think we can know that until Echoes comes out and we know what the Bittersweet trio's deal was in Evalas. I will say that I find Finneas referring to Alphonse as his 'enemy' curious- I think that term is implying more than just 'you would really like to kick my ass rn'. It makes me wonder if the Bittersweet trio are going to be an antagonistic force in Echoes- we know they'll be present in that series, but there's been absolutely nothing else about them, when we even have character designs for some of the other characters. That makes me think their design/details are inherently spoiler-y somehow.

Holy shit that's a lot of rambling/baseless speculation. Idk, I find yuuri's work super impressive in how much is implied, not just through what is said, but how it is said. And dissecting word choices and narrative decisions has always been my bag. I've had a lot of fun not just listening to the audios, but thinking about how various seemingly random details might interconnect. I cannot fucking wait for Echoes and Shattered to come out.

I get to tap into comedy, my macabre interest in violent/dark themes, and I get to really challenge myself to think not like me. Reno is an excellent mixed bag of a lot of compelling elements which prevents me from getting bored writing him . . unlike other muses I have. I was very happy that were was some FF community on tumblr, so naturally I had to pick my favourite character from FF7. Also there weren't many other Renos around, so I was like LET'S DO IT.

( people have reassured him he's not but he plays back how people get mad at him when he messes up and he doesn't know how to forgive himself if someone got THAT mad at him )

He sometimes just gets this burst of love and just hugs one of his siblings or friends

I think he doesn't develop feelings easily ( infact it's kinda hard for him to, not in a bad way )but one time there was a yokai, about his size, and they really enjoyed each other

He didn't tell anyone but he got her number and they still talk and he might have small feelings for her

The reason he hates being alone because it's a PTSD thing ( that only got worse after the kraang thing )

( he was alone and in danger for most of the movie, the only reason he wasn't freaking out because he knew if he did he was fucked )

And he got possessed before he could even lose his shit

But basically I think he got kidnapped by a hunter and held him captive ( either chained, or in a cage ) for 2 days before splinter found him

( yes they searched for him for 2 days )

The hunter would shoot his gun next to the cage ( or restraints ) he was in to purposely mess with him

And if he cried he would get in his face and start yelling until raph forced himself to stop crying because of fear

It was traumatic

Splinter has his own trauma from losing his fucking kid for 2 days, but it still fucks with raph badly

He still remembers it so vividly that it feels like it had only happened a week ago

So add that in top of the kraang doing what they did to him.....

He was only holding it together for Leo tbh

He can't go to certain areas or he'll start to hear the hunter yelling in his face again, like a hallucination

It's gotten a little bit better over time but the kraang set him so far back

He was also already claustrophobic, but if anyone tries to hold him down now he just immediately throws them off

And hard

Anything that really reminds him too much of the past he just starts freaking out

So he doesn't like to be alone :)

You said you didn’t enjoy Tom King’s writing, especially his take on the Joker. Most Batjokes fans avoided it because of BatCat, and personally I find his dialogue abysmal. But, what are some of your valid criticisms?

Hi! I've criticized aspects of King's writing before, when I was asked about his portrayal of Selina. You can read those discussions here, and here. As you will find though... I'm pointing out flaws but also admitting that I find his writing compelling. Because it's not quite accurate to say I don't enjoy King's writing at all. It's because I'm a masochist, and some of his stories turn me into Charlie from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the conspiracy meme. (Here's me writing a whole-ass essay on just one issue he wrote.)

The thing is, King has stuff to say. The concepts he wants to convey can be deeply compelling. When it comes to his Batman run, I Am Suicide, Cold Days and Knightmares are some of my favorite arcs when it comes to Bruce characterization... but I will also admit there's much to be desired in execution. King often falls into the trap that in my head is named after Moffat-- trying to seem deep, without actually delivering on the foreshadowing and ideas introduced. (Can you tell I'm a Doctor Who and Sherlock BBC survivor.) Also a lot like Moffat, King can be great at telling short self-contained stories, rather than long ones that spawn multiple narrative threads and a large cast. Most of the time secondary characters suffer dearly under King's pen. They become an extension of the protagonist and lose individuality; speech patterns bleed into each other, behaviors become interchangeable. King could benefit so much from an editor who actually ensured that the dialogue doesn't feel so repetitive and choppy, and that the voices of the characters feel distinct. It'd help a lot with making it less grating.

But leaving that aside (and other more story-specific criticisms I have)... at the end of the day, to me it feels like King cares-- something that sadly doesn't apply to a lot of writers at DC. He's got many flaws as a writer, but at least to me, it's clear that Bruce Wayne means something to him. He demonstrates a deep understanding of the character on more than one occasion, which redeems him in my eyes at least partially. Even when it comes to Joker, I dislike some of the writing, not all of it. Joker in Batman (2016) #48-49 is very interesting, and the "I need him to stop me" speech is beautiful. To be honest, I think I dislike the way Mikel Janin draws Joker more, and sadly I've come to associate his art with King's Batman stuff.
