Agave cremnophila

Mexico is home to more species of Agave than any other country, with more species being described each year. Agave cremnophila is one of the newcomers, having been described in 2018, and it comes from eastern Oaxaca in southern Mexico. Our plant is flowering for the first time, and the flower stalk arches over and touches the ground. This would not happen in its habitat, since it grows on cliffs, with the inflorescence hanging down over the abyss, where it can be visited by flying creatures such as bees or bats. Agave was formerly placed in the family Agavaceae, but recently it has been put into the subfamily Agavoideae within the Asparagus Family.

The letters are shaped like cats! The ළ in particular: it looks like a loaf viewed from the front. But the other two also look like they’re curled up and sleepy. Last time බළලා got knocked out quite early, but I hope it makes it further this year!
