The morning after the gala, you wake up in Benā€™s guest room feeling relaxed and refreshed.
You always seem to get a better sleep when you stay at his, though youā€™re not sure if thatā€™s due to his comfy mattress and expensive sheets or the fact that he lives out in Cobham and itā€™s significantly quieter than your own flat.
This state of relaxation lasts for about five minutes, or until you get a text from your friend Valerie asking if youā€™ve been on Twitter today.
Bracing yourself, you open the app and already see Benā€™s name trending.
Youā€™ve gained some followers over the years when Ben has posted you on his socials, but itā€™s nothing compared to the way people are currently talking about you all over the internet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Itā€™s not just on Twitter - your Instagram following count has already grown exponentially, and your comments are filled with everything under the sun, from praise to cruelty.
You know Ben gets shit like this all the time, and Mia warned you it would be coming your way, but itā€™s still surreal to read about yourself online.
Especially when none of it is true. Even the nice tweets about what a lovely couple you make are based on a lie.
You canā€™t resist going down the rabbit hole for a few minutes, reading pages of tweets from Benā€™s fans speculating about your relationship, some negative and some positive. Eventually, you can feel your brain starting to hurt, and you know itā€™s in your best interest to shut your phone off for a while.
Begrudgingly, you force yourself to get out of bed and face the day. You make your way downstairs in your pyjamas, stretching your arms out as you enter the kitchen.
Ben is already awake, like he usually is at this time, and heā€™s standing by the stove in joggers and an old Nike sweatshirt, flipping pancakes that you know are not a part of his diet plan.
ā€œPancakes?ā€ you question, startling Ben a bit as he turns to face you.
ā€œMorning,ā€ he says with a small smile. ā€œYeah, with blueberries. Theyā€™re for you. Figured itā€™s the least I could do since-ā€œ
ā€œSince Iā€™m being torn apart online by football fans?ā€ you joke - or, at least, you mean it as a joke.
Benā€™s face falls, his eyes wide with concern, and he sets down the spatula to walk over to you.
ā€œI am so sorry, Y/N,ā€ he says seriously. ā€œI didnā€™t know it would be like this. Iā€™ve obviously never had a real girlfriend before, so I didnā€™t think about it.ā€
ā€œBen, itā€™s-ā€
ā€œI called Shreya as soon as I saw everything and had her prepare an exit strategy, sheā€™s already confirmed our relationship to the press but she thinks we can back out of it if-ā€œ
ā€œBen,ā€ you say a bit more firmly, placing a hand on his arm. ā€œWhy would we need to back out of this? Does she not think itā€™s working?ā€
Ben just blinks at you for a moment before shaking his head. ā€œWell, no, actually. Apparently Iā€™m getting great press from it, and youā€™re the one getting all the shitty comments. But I-ā€
ā€œIā€™m fine with it, then,ā€ you shrug. ā€œIā€™ll just make my Instagram private, you know I donā€™t really care about social media anyways. Iā€™ll be fine.ā€
Ben still doesnā€™t look convinced.
ā€œAre you sure? I hate the thought of you having to read that crap,ā€ he mumbles. ā€œIā€™m used to the pricks, but you shouldnā€™t have to be.ā€
ā€œItā€™s fine, Ben, I swear,ā€ you insist, squeezing his shoulder. ā€œActually, some of your fans seem to like me. Or they like that I supposedly keep you grounded or whatever bullshit Shreya fed the press.ā€
ā€œWell, that partā€™s not total bullshit,ā€ Ben says with a small smile that makes your cheeks flush slightly. ā€œThank you again for doing this. And you can still change your mind at any time, you know.ā€
ā€œI know,ā€ you say, mirroring his smile. ā€œNow hurry up before you burn my pancakes.ā€
ā€œOh, shit!ā€
-
By the next weekend, youā€™ve gotten pretty used to ā€œdatingā€ Ben.
You go private on your socials as you discussed, with the official statement from Benā€™s publicist being that you two ask for privacy as a new couple. Naturally, this only makes everyone more interested, including the media.
As Shreya hoped, the headlines now describe Ben as a ā€œman in loveā€ and someone ready to ā€œsettle down with a nice girl.ā€ There are tabloid articles with pictures of you two - some from before you were even pretending to date - and all the information they could dig up on you, including your job.
Itā€™s all a bit weird, but the weirdest part is definitely when you have to actually corroborate your story of being Benā€™s girlfriend. Which, as far as everyone outside your inner circle is concerned, you now are.
It definitely feels strange lying when, for example, one of the doctors you work with congratulates you on your relationship. (Turns out her son is a Chelsea fan and she wants to know if you could ask him to sign a kit or something, which you promise to make happen.)
Youā€™re relieved when the only event you have to attend this weekend is Benā€™s game, which you wouldā€™ve gone to anyways. Youā€™re also going with his sister Alex, who is obviously in on the whole thing, which makes it easier.
She meets you at your flat, which is conveniently only about ten minutes away from Stamford Bridge on the tube, an hour before the game.
After you tightly embrace Benā€™s sister, who is like a younger sister to you as well, she grins and passes you a small gift bag.
ā€œYou got me a present?ā€ you ask in confusion.
ā€œItā€™s not from me, itā€™s from Ben,ā€ she chuckles. ā€œHe also said to say heā€™s sorry and that it was Shreyaā€™s idea.ā€
You open the bag and pull out a familiar article of clothing - a brand new Chelsea shirt with Benā€™s name on the back.
Of course, as Benā€™s girlfriend, it would make sense that you be wearing his kit.
ā€œOh, god, let me go change.ā€
Once youā€™ve replaced the plain blue t-shirt you were wearing with the shirt Ben sent over, you walk back out and find Alex with an amused look on her face.
ā€œHow do I look?ā€ you ask a bit sarcastically as you do a twirl.
ā€œLike a proper WAG,ā€ Alex laughs. ā€œLetā€™s go, my future sister-in-law.ā€
You groan as Alex grabs you by the arm and you depart for the match.
Although youā€™ve come to see Ben play at the Bridge more times than you can count, you have never felt this many eyes on you as you make your way to your seats. There are people not-so-subtly taking your photo as you walk up, probably made all the worse by the Chilwell kit you have on - though you suppose thatā€™s the point. Ā
The match begins, and you cheer at the top of your lungs for Chelsea, just as you have from the day Ben signed for them. You never really cared that much about football, and you didnā€™t support any particular club growing up, but youā€™ve always been Benā€™s number one fan.
Today, heā€™s playing well, making you as proud as ever. Itā€™s not hard to pretend to be the supportive girlfriend when every flawless pass or run forward has you leaping out of your seat with unrestrained enthusiasm.
At half-time, Chelsea are up by 1 against Newcastle, and you and Alex are happily chatting and catching up over a beer.
ā€œI saw all the pics of you guys at the gala on Twitter,ā€ Alex says with a smirk on her face, lowering her voice so nobody overhears. ā€œI know itā€™s weird to say since youā€™re basically part of the family, but you actually look quite good together.ā€
ā€œEw, Alex, thereā€™s no way,ā€ you insist, a slight blush creeping onto your cheeks. ā€œHeā€™sā€¦Ben.ā€
Alex just laughs and drops the subject as the game resumes and the boys come back out of the tunnel.
Around the 85th minute, with the score now tied 1-1, Ben comes running up the side and makes an excellent pass to Conor, who scores and secures the win. You jump out of your seats to cheer as the guys celebrate on the pitch, you rolling your eyes with affection as Ben and Conor jump up and down with excitement.
The whistle blows shortly after with Chelsea leaving victorious, and you and Alex make your way down to the tunnels to meet up with Ben. With this being their fourth win in a row, the atmosphere at the Bridge is electric, a far cry from last yearā€™s rough season.
Itā€™s so nice to see Ben so happy again, and the smile on his face only seems to grow tenfold when he spots you and Alex making your way over to him.
You canā€™t resist picking up your pace to a light jog as you move toward him, and his arms are already open to pull you into a tight hug that lifts your feet off the ground and makes your heart soar in a similar fashion.
ā€œThat assist was brilliant,ā€ you murmur into his shoulder before he sets you down.
Ben pulls away, still beaming at you, his sweaty hair curled down over his forehead.
ā€œThanks, Y/N,ā€ he smiles, his eyes wandering to the shirt youā€™d almost forgotten you were wearing.
Itā€™s not the first time youā€™ve worn his kit - his England debut and the Champions League final come to mind - but those were special occasions, with the rest of his friends and family wearing it too. This is obviously different, and although Ben sent it over for you to wear, his eyes are locked to you like heā€™s trying to memorize every thread of the fabric.
You canā€™t figure out why he seems so transfixed, but you donā€™t have much time to dwell on it before youā€™re interrupted.
Alex clears her throat, snapping Ben out of whatever trance he was in, and he pulls her in for a hug.
ā€œSo, to celebrate the win and Benā€™s assist, Iā€™m thinking he should take us out for a nice dinner?ā€ Alex suggests, smiling and nudging your arm.
ā€œShouldnā€™t you be buying me dinner?ā€ Ben raises an eyebrow. When you both just laugh, he rolls his eyes and shakes his head. ā€œAlright. Iā€™ll go shower, you make a reservation somewhere.ā€
After you and Alex have picked out the fanciest-looking sushi place you could find online and collected Ben from the changing rooms, you make your way to his car. Just like after every game, the paparazzi are out trying to get videos and photos of the players leaving the stadium.
This time, however, most of the attention seems to be directed at you.
The lights begin to flash the moment you exit the building, and Ben reaches down to take your hand without a second of hesitation. Whether itā€™s to flaunt your ā€œrelationshipā€ further or just to comfort you, youā€™re not sure, but itā€™s definitely working either way.
ā€œY/N, did you enjoy the match today?ā€
You know you donā€™t have to answer any of their questions, but youā€™d rather not be branded as cold or rude as the media loves to do when a woman ignores them.
So you squeeze Benā€™s hand and nod, smiling at the man recording you.
ā€œOf course, the team played really well.ā€
ā€œAnd what did you think of Benā€™s performance?ā€ they fire back at you.
ā€œHe was amazing,ā€ you say without missing a beat. ā€œI always love watching him on the pitch.ā€
You can see Ben smiling at you as you speak - a genuine smile that you know has nothing to do with the cameras surrounding you - but he startles you slightly when he leans in to peck your cheek and lets his lips linger there for a moment. Theyā€™re soft and warm against your skin, and you feel significantly colder when they pull away.
Youā€™ve clearly spurred on the media even more with this sudden display of affection, but Ben begins to pull you along with him and help you into the car before either of you has to answer any more questions.
You breathe out a sigh of relief as you settle into the passenger seat, Ben and Alex entering the car moments later.
ā€œNice show, you two,ā€ Alex laughs, obviously still amused by the sight of you and Ben pretending to be a couple.
ā€œYou okay, Y/N?ā€ Ben asks, looking over at you. ā€œSorry if the cheek kiss was too much. I know itā€™s a bit awkward.ā€
ā€œYeah, yeah,ā€ you assure him, rolling your eyes. ā€œItā€™s fine. Of course itā€™s gonna be awkward sometimes, but as long as itā€™s helping with the PR plan, right?ā€
Ben nods gratefully and smiles at you once more before asking Alex for directions to the sushi place.
Youā€™re grateful for her chatting away about how hungry she is, and for the song Ben is playing loudly through the speakers as you drive to the restaurant, both of which are helping to distract you from how alarmingly not awkward this all feels.
A/N: let me know what your thoughts are after this chapter!! things start to heat up in the next one i promise ;)

I love crawling out of the depths, opening up tumblr, and seeing your art. I love it.
it is quite interesting how social media can fall to the wayside, and people on the internet can just disappear forever if they really wanted to! I admit I struggle to keep up with "public accounts", they are uniquely stressful and I solute your hibernating tenacity. always lovely to see you resurface regardless, thank you very much for the lovely compliment...
I will say in case any of my dear followers were wondering where i've gone for the past month and a half, for weeks i've been pondering how to even broach the enormity of the topic that is: I made the mistake of thinking about my most favorite character for more than 2 minutes in one sitting. I intentionally go out of my way to avoid this and have many strategies to evade this occurring because every time I do enter a sort of hermetically sealed mental chamber where it's just me and him and his life and I begin to ignore all points of previously established social contact and also my health indefinitely. It's difficult to convey the emotional experience of this or its psychic magnitude. and it's hard to say "guys i really love this character!" because that's just words. you can't see it. the 10 years of obsessively thinking about some guy so intensely on&off cyclically until you've made 20 different worlds he's living in... how does one convey the depth of these without artistically depicting them as you see them to be...? i am trying to figure it out. currently planning a longform comic for my favorite and several smaller comics for others, but logically an individual can understand this takes a while... he and I have had multiple rendezvous over the past decade and I wish I had more "historical" art to show but for many of these years I have been a bit too physically disabled to draw, the past several weeks have been spent attempting to recreate his ideal form as he exists in my head. he is starting to come around!
I typed up three separate disquisitions last month to try and explain my feelings on him and none of them felt like the proper vessel to communicate this concept. which is likely for the best. the obvious answer is "just draw him". fine with this being the case, difficult when I have so many drawing ideas I'm now sitting on 100+ works in progress and they just keep accumulating since my brain generates these like an old laptop you leave in the corner of your room to mine bitcoin. in a way I'm content with this being a very "personal" experience thus far, shared with me and those in my inner social circle (really cannot emphasize to my readers enough how fandom can poison your constitution without self-checked moderation). however... I yearn to meet others who are as passionately involved with him as I am, because I think we could coalesce our ideas, and passion, into something beautiful...

Institutions for Failed Persons Part 9
Luna was in no hurry to pull out. She was more than content to just lay on your back, nibbling on your ear and happily yipping You felt like you could lay in that courtyard with Luna inside you forever
You felt a wet tongue begin to lick the half of your face that wasn't pressed firmly into the grass and dirt.Ā
"Now now little pup, let these two enjoy themselves for a bit, you'll get a turn eventually." You had almost forgot that Dr. Veronika was standingĀ
The post orgasmic euphoria mixed with the ketamine you were given in such a beautiful neurochemical dance that had made the rest of the world completely fade away.Ā
You wondered how long you could have stayed in a reality where you and Luna were the only things that ever existed
After what felt like a blissful eternity you felt Luna slide out of you. You immediately began whimpering as the sudden emptiness you felt expanded into an all consuming void you desperately wanted to have filled again.
"Awe what's the matter? Are you really so desperate to have Luna stay inside you that you have to make these pitiful whining noises. I wonder if the research labs has ever considered figuring out how to give pups knots so you can stay tied together longer?" The doctor mused.
A drone attached your leash back to your collar.Ā
"Why don't you take this one back to it's room. I bet its all tuckered out from all this excitement and could use a little puppy nap." Dr. Veronikas voice sounded so heavenly when she was pleased.
The next few days carried on as usual, with the exception of play time.Ā
Now instead of being let loose to fail at socializing with the other pups, you and Luna where simply brought together by your drones to enjoy one another.
As time went on, you and Luna began to play with one another after she was done breeding you. This often took the form of barking and pawing at one another until Luna eventually pushed you onto your back and she would gently gnaw at your throat.
Was it possible Dr. Veronika had Luna begin breeding you so that you would learn how to play like a pup?Ā
She was such a talented doctor that you wouldn't put it past her to come up with such a novel teaching strategy.
One day at play time when Luna was done breeding you, Dr. Veronika came out to the court yard. "Awe, I see my two favorite pups are getting along so well. I cant tell you two how proud I am." You and Luna sat in front of her, shaking your hips happily and basking in her praise.
Another pup jumped on your back and you could feel his mass nearly crush you into the ground. Its hard cock was eagerly trying to find its way into you as it thrusted its hips.Ā
Just as suddenly as he pounced on you, he was violently thrown off of you.
"BAD DOG! DID I TELL YOU THAT YOU COULD BREED HER YOU FILTHY FUCKING MUTT?" Dr. Veronika's voice was truly terrifying when she was angry.Ā
You saw her pinning the other pup to the ground with her hand wrapped around its neck, and her boot on its chest.
"Your lucky I don't send you back to the acute unit." As the doctor let go of the pups neck and rose to her full intimidating height, you could hear a faint crack as the pup howled in pain. "Your lucky to walk away from this with only a cracked rib you little shit."
One of the drones led you back to your room, the sounds of Dr. Veronika disciplining the now helpless pet echoed throughout the courtyard.Ā
It was another example in a long series of events that reenforced the fear of ever upsetting the good doctor.
The next morning after you finished munching on your breakfast Dr. Veronika came in to your room.Ā
"Heeyyyy puppy, I have a wonderful surprise for you! Can you guess what it is?" Doctor Veronika addressed you in her sing song voice that only came out when she was excited.
You obediently sat at her feet and cocked your head in confusion. You couldn't think of anything you did wrong, and her tone told you she was happy with you, but the wild grin on her face worried you. It was the same grin she wore when she was pleased or furious.
She revealed a sturdy leather belt with a long fluffy tail attached to it, and a pair of cute little puppy ears on a headband.Ā
They reminded you of Luna. She was the only pup you had seen adorned with such beautiful gear since you came to the institute.
"Your owner is just so pleased with your behavior lately that she thinks you've earned more than a little treat." Dr. Veronika handed the two pieces of gear to the drone who fed you breakfast. The drone dutifully began putting them on you.
"I'm moving you to a new ward for very good little pups. Isn't that exciting?!" You tried to remember what the receptionist told you about the different units when you first arrived here.Ā  Your memory was too hazy now and you were more than happy for it to stay that way.
The drone attached a leash to your collar and went to exit your room with the doctor. You immediately turned back to your cage and grabbed your plushie with your teeth. Your leash was pulled taught for just a moment as the drone looked back on you quizzically.
You crawled back to the drones side as fast as you could with your teddy bear clutched between your teeth. Its LED visor displayed a ^_^ face and gave you a little scritch behind your ear.Ā
"Ohh how could I forget your toy? Good job remembering my sweet puppy!" said the doctor
You held your head high with pride as Dr. Veronika lead you off the ward through a series of heavy doors with loud magnetic locks.Ā
You could barely recall your college graduation anymore, but you knew you felt far more pride now than at any other point in your life.
As you arrived on the new unit you saw other pups with ears and tails milling about the rooms and hallways all on their own.Ā
You hadn't seen other pups unaccompanied on the other units you were on. Clearly this ward was for very well behaved pups indeed.
Doctor Veronika stopped you before entering your new room and had you sit like the good pup you had become.Ā
"Now, I want you to understand you will have a roommate on this unit. I think this will be your favorite part of moving to this new ward."
As you entered the new room, you saw Luna rolling around on a dog bed while eagerly chewing on a squeaky toy.
She immediately dropped the toy and bounded towards you and began licking your faceĀ
"Welcome to your new home puppy!" Dr. Veronika looked as happy as both you and Luna

Zhou pleased to get first points of the year in Melbourne but Bottas calls on Alfa Romeo to 'figure out' their lack of pace
There were contrasting fortunes down at Alfa Romeo in Melbourne, after Zhou Guanyu finished in the top 10 for the first time this season, while team mate Valtteri Bottas endured a ā€œlonelyā€ race to the chequered flag in 11th. With Bottas and Sergio Perez starting in the pit lane, Zhou started in what became the back row of the grid ā€“ alongside Logan Sargeant ā€“ in P17. But the Chinese racer then produced some strong overtakes, while benefitting from the red flags, to make his way through the field. F1 NATION: Safety Cars, three red flags, eight retirements and a Verstappen victory ā€“ it's our Australian GP review Zhou then took the chequered flag in P10, but gained a position after Carlos Sainz was given a five-second time penalty ā€“ for his collision with Fernando Alonso ā€“ promoting the Alfa Romeo sophomore up one position. After jumping out of the cockpit in Melbourne, a satisfied Zhou said: ā€œObviously at the end of the day it was a good result for me to grab my first points of the season. But, if the red flag didnā€™t come, we could have finished maybe P8, P7. ā€œI was happy with the progress we made because we were starting at the back of the grid today. The car was a lot more racy compared to yesterday, so I feel like I was able to fight in the mix with the guys around me. So, I was happy.ā€ This feature is currently not available because you need to provide consent to functional cookies. Please update your cookie preferences Zhou pleased to get off the mark with first points of the year in Melbourne When quizzed on whether their Sunday performance at Albert Park bodes well for Alfa Romeo moving forward to Baku, Zhou responded: ā€œYeah, exactly. For us as a team we havenā€™t been the most consistent midfield team so far. ā€œBut there is plenty of work [happening, so] Iā€™m sure we can get over it, and to be working through this reasonably long April break, and hopefully come back stronger, and to be keep fighting together with the others.ā€ READ MORE: 6 Winners and 5 Losers from Australia ā€“ Who finished on a high Down Under? As for Bottas, he was left to lament his bad luck, as the Finn lost time pitting for fresh rubber prior to the first two red flags, meaning he came out at the back of the field, without gaining the advantage he had hoped for, and was left to endure a ā€œlonelyā€ afternoon in Melbourne. ā€œThere was not that much action until the action started at the end!ā€ said Bottas, who won in Melbourne back in 2019. ā€œIt was for me quite unfortunate that we took a risk on the strategy. I pitted on Lap 1 onto the hard tyre, and [aimed] to do the whole race with the hards. This feature is currently not available because you need to provide consent to functional cookies. Please update your cookie preferences Bottas reveals red flags in Australian GP lost him any potential advantage from ā€˜riskyā€™ strategy ā€œBut then the red flag after meant that everyone else was pretty much on the same strategy, so I couldnā€™t take advantage of that. Then I pitted for the softs before the end just before the red flag came, and then everybody was on the soft again. I just didnā€™t have much luck on the red flags today.ā€ ICYMI: The best social media moments from the Australian Grand Prix He added: ā€œIt has [been a difficult weekend]. Definitely off the pace from where we thought we should be. So, something to look into. Iā€™m actually glad that there is a bit of time before the next race so we can figure out something.ā€ When asked whether the team understood the problems affecting them so far this year, Bottas answered: ā€œSome ideas. Some ideas. But we need to make sure we fully understand everything.ā€ via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Helnik and #23 caught in snowstorm :)
Modern AU, pre-relationship, PG-ish, and also on ao3.
It happens by accident.
The whole group descends on his house like the pack of questionably socialized wolves they are ā€“ Matthias is enough of a person to realize that part of his acceptance into the dynamic hinges on his lack of human roommates ā€“ and departs in a more staggered fashion, couples leaving as they always do, until itā€™s just Nina lingering and still unable to shut up and oh sheā€™ll be the end of him someday. She does this with everyone, heā€™s learned, takes whatever spaces she wants and spends more nights on other peopleā€™s couches than in her own bed. Heā€™ll drape a blanket or two over her when she finally loses consciousness, and thereā€™s nothing awkward about this set of routines at all, and-
Matthias looks out the window as his own tiredness is starting to become apparent, and plans donā€™t mean a damned thing anymore.
Itā€™s snowing in the way that people down here donā€™t tend to like, enough that going anywhere tomorrow is going to be a nightmare. His own northern background makes him fearless about it ā€“ a few inches is nothing, thank you ā€“ but he feels a certain worry about the people he is starting to love, about-
ā€œSomething cool out there?ā€ Nina asks, finally figuring out that he stopped actively listening to her multiple minutes ago.
ā€œCome look.ā€
She does ā€“ thereā€™s not really enough space for two bodies at his front window, but she makes it work, stands far too close for what they are trying not to be and stares out at the current state of the world. ā€œIā€™m not going home in that.ā€
ā€œI doubted you were anyways.ā€
For this he gets an elbow to the ribs ā€“ Nina is tactile in ways he will never be used to, and also not in appropriate position to properly glare at him as the reflection on the window shows sheā€™s doing anyways. ā€œI should just move in.ā€
Sheā€™s threatened to, before. Her debris has already started to accumulate, to the point where he finds himself tempted to ask if a woman he hasnā€™t even kissed would like a drawer and heā€™s already had to clear part of the bathroom cabinet. If she were to get stuck here, it would be a few days before heā€™d even need to offer her more than one of his sweaters for warmth, and-
ā€œIā€™m happier alone,ā€ and they both know what a lie that is, how easily heā€™s adapted to group dynamics he never knew he wanted in his life before they happened to him. He was happier alone, he thinks, and now he isnā€™t and itā€™s tearing him apart and his planned life alone but for a series of large winter dogs is looking less and less likely and-
ā€œWe should plan,ā€ Nina says, never good words coming from her. ā€œIn case the power goes out. I saw weā€™re looking at a few inches, andā€¦ā€
Great, confirmed end of the world, anything involving multiple inches of snow means the outside world all but shuts down, and she has a point, and-
ā€œWeā€¦ you could sleep in my room tonight. Just in case.ā€
Matthias would like to think heā€™s good at boundaries, and Nina flirts with everyone and heā€™s never had the impression heā€™s anything special to her. Cuddling for warmth is a different practice than anything else heā€™s thought about, but itā€™s still a new step for them. Heā€™s never gotten the impression that her nights on the couch have been uncomfortable, butā€¦
ā€œIf thatā€™s okay with you, yes.ā€
Okay might be pushing it a little, but theyā€™re thinking strategy here and that overrides whatever objections may otherwise be had. Two human bodies and a very fluffy dog will provide adequate warmth if something goes wrong in the night, and in the morning they can see if the fireplace that hasnā€™t been used in who-knows-how-long actually works, and-
It occurs to him, as they move into his spaces, that heļæ½ļæ½ļæ½s never technically taken anyone into his bed before. This is an innocent subversion of the idea, but itā€™s still-
ā€œIf you want me on the couch, Iā€™m okay with the couch,ā€ Nina says as if sensing his internal conflicts. ā€œI donā€™t mind. Really.ā€
ā€œThis was your idea,ā€ he reminds her. ā€œAnd I donā€™tā€¦ itā€™s just odd.ā€
ā€œOdd because of me, orā€¦?ā€
ā€œI thought it would happen differently. You and me on a mattress.ā€
It takes her a moment to process, and another moment for her to lean in and kiss his cheek. ā€œI thought youā€™d never say those words.ā€
ā€œI-ā€œ
ā€œI wasnā€™t sure what my chances were, yā€™know? Youā€™re soā€¦ repressed and not completely in the hot way, andā€¦ I wasnā€™t about to jump you, but Iā€™ve thought about it so much and-ā€œ
ā€œThatā€™s not what Iā€™m suggesting, Nina.ā€
ā€œBut youā€™ve at least thought about it. Pleasantly. Thatā€™s so good to know.ā€
ā€œIā€™m not-ā€œ
ā€œI know. Youā€™re cautious and sweet and a little scared of me and you look like that andā€¦ I can hold back. Thatā€™s not world-ending for me. But at least youā€™ve figured out whatĀ  you want.ā€
ā€œI do want you. Eventually. But this really is justā€¦ body heat, alright?ā€
ā€œUnderstood.ā€ She takes another face kiss, and he suspects his own boundaries wonā€™t last as long as heā€™d expected and thatā€™ll be okay when it happens. Still a slower burn than sheā€™s ever let anyone have before, if the stories from the rest of their friends are to be believed, but-
To her credit, Nina does not strip down for sleep, instead just disentangling herself long enough to kick off her shoes even though that dress she has on as a base layer wonā€™t be comfortable in the night. Sheā€™s adapting too, and thereā€™s a certain beauty in it. He has more options and he takes them, retreating to the bathroom to change into adequate sleep clothes, and-
ā€œYou could borrow a sweatshirt if you want,ā€ he offers. ā€œOr anything else youā€™re inclined toā€¦ā€
ā€œIā€™m fine. A few weird marks on my skin are an adequate trade-off for not breaking you.ā€
He has never done this before, he is vividly aware as they move around on the bed trying to find comfortable positions and he is thankful the dog hasnā€™t inserted herself into the situation. He has never done this before, but Nina is nothing if not the most perfect challenge heā€™s ever encountered, and she has no trouble moving him when heā€™s not doing what she wants, and when she stops theyā€™re more entwined than he expected and-
ā€œIf thereā€™s anythingā€¦ awkward, in the morningā€¦ā€
ā€œI can ignore a biological response,ā€ she laughs. ā€œI get to play with you at some point. I donā€™t need to rush it.ā€
(In the morning, they are snowed in and nothing is awkward and Matthias does not admit heā€™s never kissed anyone he liked before and he doesnā€™t need to.)
(Later they make snow angels and then hot chocolate, and Nina almost destroys the tiny kitchen, and there are so many ways to fall in love and apparently they get all of them.)

Even the Losers
Chapter 1
ā€œYou can do this Marinette,ā€ Adrien whispered encouragingly, echoing the mantra sheā€™d been whispering to herself for the past two days. Ā She could do this. Ā She could manage. Ā This was for Max. Ā She could handle it. Ā He couldnā€™t be here but she could. Ā She could be strong for him. Ā She gave Adrien a shaky smile and nodded. Ā ā€œWe just have to find him and we can leave,ā€ he reminded her.
Marinette took a breath and let it out slowly. Sheā€™d dealt with far, far worse than a few judgmental, heartless asses who had no real interest in her. Ā But seas of artificial smiles had always unsettled her and currently she was surrounded with so much artificial sweetness she felt like she was walking through a kidā€™s cereal aisle. Ā That added onto her already existing anxiety had her ready to bolt at the slightest provocation.
She ran her hand over the skirt of her dress, letting the feeling of the fabric and the knowledge of all that had gone into it soothe her. Ā She was especially proud of her dress and the work that had gone into it. Ā It was a black so dark it almost appeared to draw in the light around it. Ā A mesh with strategically placed blood red decorations overlaid the dress, hugging her bodice until it reached her hips then dropped into a flowing skirt that ended just before it could pool on the ground.
She fought the urge to fiddle with the belt in her nervousness. Ā She couldnā€™t show weakness like that, not here. Ā She looked up at Adrien again in search of an anchor to reality. Ā She took in his expression and had to stifle the laugh that resulted. Ā He had his own artificially sweet smile on but his eyes quite clearly begged for a quick death. Ā He glanced down to her and nudged her discreetly, his artificial smile becoming wide and real. Ā ā€œShhhh,ā€ he hushed her under his breath. Ā ā€œWeā€™re trying not to attract attention to ourselves, remember? Ā Weā€™re ghosts.ā€ Ā He looked around to make sure nobody was looking at them.
Marinette immediately quieted, her face becoming somber. She did remember. Ā In and out. Ā That was the goal. Ā Her goal. Knock the man on his ass with Maxā€™s accomplishments, then never see him, or anyone else in this room, other than Adrien of course, ever again. Ā They were supposed to be like ghosts. Ā There but not. Ā Her eyes scanned the room looking for their target.
Adrienā€™s eyes immediately softened and filled with regret. Ā ā€œShit, Mari. Iā€™m sorry. Ā I didnā€™t mean toā€¦ā€
ā€œNo,ā€ she looked up at him with an artificial smile of her own. Ā ā€œI know. Itā€™s fine. Ā Itā€™s not your fault.ā€ Ā She scanned the crowd again, cursing her height, as she had many times in her life. Ā Even with the six inch, death defying heels, she still barely reached Adrienā€™s eyes, let alone give her any kind of advantage to see the crowd. Ā She needed some kind of vantage point but unfortunately, the only high point in the ballroom was the stage, which she couldnā€™t utilize if she was going to follow her Ghost policy. Ā ā€œWe might have more success if we split up. Ā Let me know if you find him.ā€
Adrien squeezed her arm quickly before nodding. ā€œGood luck.ā€
Marinette shot him a genuine smile. Ā ā€œYou too. Ā May the Luck be with you.ā€
Adrien laughed and shook his head. Ā ā€œI never should have forced you to watch that movie.ā€
Marinette grinned back. Ā ā€œYou never should have forced me to watch the prequels. Ā The original ones were just fine.ā€ Ā Adrien narrowed his eyes at her but let it drop in favor of disappearing in the crowd to find their target.
Marinette followed him with her eyes until she couldnā€™t see him anymore then took a deep breath to brace herself. Ā Her eyes immediately started darting around and her fingers started dancing. Ā She needed something to occupy them or she was going to start attracting unwanted attention.
She noted a bar close by and made a beeline for it. She waited politely for the bartender to notice her, her fingers tapping anxiously against the bar while she waited. She froze when she heard a gruff voice next to her. Ā ā€œDid you sneak in here?ā€
She turned to the voice and blinked a few times. ā€œExcuse me?ā€
ā€œYouā€™re anxious and jittery. Ā Afraid youā€™re going to get kicked out?ā€ the man elaborated.
Marinette studied him for a moment trying to figure out why he looked so familiar. Ā ā€œNo,ā€ she started slowly, trying to give her brain a chance to answer the puzzle. ā€œJust not a fan of events like this.ā€
The man scoffed and nodded in understanding. ā€œCheers.ā€ Ā He raised his glass for her to clink his but she held out her hands with a sheepish look, showing she didnā€™t have a drink yet. Ā ā€œWell, thatā€™s a crime. Ā Nobody should have to endure one of these without a drink.ā€ Ā He motioned to the bartender and got an immediate response. ā€œAnother for me and aā€¦ā€ he motioned to Marinette to give her order.
ā€œOh, champagne, please,ā€ she finished with a smile for the bartender. Ā Thatā€™s what was socially acceptable at events like this, right? Ā Champagne.
The bartender looked to the man for confirmation. The man nodded. Ā ā€œAnd a champagne for the woman.ā€ Ā Marinette scowled at the bartender causing the man to laugh. ā€œHeā€™s just worried that youā€™re underage. You look awfully young. Ā Youā€™re not, right?ā€
Marinetteā€™s glare softened in realization. Ā ā€œOh, that makes sense. Ā No, Iā€™m not. Ā I forgot the legal age here is higher than in France.ā€
He nodded and looked at her critically for a moment before offering his hand. Ā ā€œJason.ā€
Marinette immediately reached out for his hand and answered with her name before her brain registered the name heā€™d given. Jason. Ā Jason Todd. Ā Bruce Wayneā€™s son. Ā She pulled her hand back quickly as the realization hit her and focused on leveling her breathing. Ā She grabbed the champagne glass more violently than necessary when the bartender set it down in front of her and immediately downed the entire glass, only coughing a bit as the bubbles tickled her throat. Ā Overall, champagne was not the best drink to chug. Ā ā€œAnother, please,ā€ she croaked out.
ā€œYou know, there are better drinks for that, if thatā€™s what you want to do,ā€ Jason grinned, laughing at her.
ā€œWasnā€™t the plan until it was and then thatā€™s all I had,ā€ she croaked out, her voice still hoarse from the bubbles. Ā She kept her eyes focused on her empty glass as she spoke, almost afraid to make eye contact with him as if just seeing her eyes would be enough to blow her cover.
Jason chuckled and nodded in understanding. ā€œDonā€™t suppose youā€™d care to dance?ā€
Marinette whipped her head to him and stared incredulously, forgetting her previous reservations. Ā She only moved again when the bartender set the new drink down in front of her. Ā ā€œUmā€¦ noā€¦ thank you. Ā That doesnā€™t seemā€¦ I donā€™t think my date would be comfortable with that. Ā Good luck getting drunk enough to handle tonight though.ā€ Ā She gave him a weak smile and raised her glass to him before moving into the fray again, now armed with a socially acceptable fidget toy.
It took five minutes of avoiding wandering hands and leering looks but with a little luck and some prodding from the goddess hiding in the folds of her skirt, she was finally able to stumble on M. Lucius Fox, Director of Research and Development for Wayne Enterprises. Ā He was in a conversation he was not remotely interested in with some vapid business exec who was just as interested in M. Fox. Ā Not that M. Foxā€™s disinterest was clear. Ā He was very polite and good at covering his boredom, much more so than his conversation partner, but sheā€™d been at enough stuffy, snobby parties with Adrien, Felix, and Chloe to know the signs.
She took another breath and squared her shoulders, going into Ladybug Mode; calm and confident, completely assured of herself. She was on a mission. Ā She had a goal and a plan to accomplish it, and once she had a plan, she had a direction and purpose, and with those, her insecurities fell away. Ā With M. Fox in her sights, she could see the pieces and the way they fit together. There were no more doubts. Ā She set her glass on a passing waiterā€™s tray and made her way over to M. Fox.
ā€œThe elusive M. Fox. Ā It is a pleasure to meet you,ā€ Marinette purred, coming up next to him with a charming, real smile.
ā€œI didnā€™t realize I was hiding,ā€ Lucius responded with a polite smile of his own.
ā€œMust just come naturally. Ā Foxes are known to be crafty.ā€ Ā Marinette looked around them and motioned toward the dancefloor. ā€œWould you care to dance, M. Fox?ā€
He shook his head deferentially. Ā ā€œAre you sure there arenā€™t other people here youā€™d rather dance with?ā€
Marinette smiled conspiratorially and leaned closer to him, making sure to keep a respectable distance. Ā She did NOT want to have her banter confused with flirting. That was not the strategy she had devised. Ā ā€œThat would defeat the purpose of coming here. Ā I came here specifically to speak with you.ā€
Lucius looked down at her analytically, trying to figure out what her angle was, but took her hand and followed her onto the dancefloor. Ā ā€œAnd what did you want to speak about, Msā€¦?ā€
ā€œDupain Cheng. Ā Marinette Dupain Cheng. Ā Itā€™s nice to meet you M. Fox. Ā I wanted to speak to you to sell my friend Max Kante.ā€
Luciusā€™ eyes widened almost imperceptibly as the music changed. Ā After a beat, he chuckled. Ā ā€œIā€™m not in the market to buy anyone, but thank you.ā€ Ā He settled his hands on her mid-back and hand for their dance.
Marinette chuckled good naturedly along with him. ā€œSell his talents, would be a better way to say it.ā€
ā€œAnd where is Mr. Kante?ā€ Lucius raised an eyebrow at her, curious why the young man didnā€™t bother to come himself. Ā ā€œWhy are you presenting his talents instead of him?ā€
ā€œFinals. Ā Had the incredibly bad luck to have a Friday at noon final. Ā I mean at least it wasnā€™t at 19h, right? Ā Can you believe they have those?ā€ Ā She scrunched up her nose in playful disgust. Ā ā€œBut still means heā€™s taking it right now. Ā And for his last final of his career. Ā I meanā€¦ probably. Ā Knowing him, he might get another PhD at some point. Ā My finals and presentation ended last week. Ā M. Waā€¦ā€ she took a steadying breath and looked back up with a strained smile hoping he wouldnā€™t notice the stutter. Ā ā€œM. Wayne even visited for it. Ā Thatā€™s when the idea for this came to me. Ā So while Max studied, I plotted.ā€
ā€œSo why me then and not Mr. Wayne?ā€ Lucius asked with a curious interest.
Marinette froze for just a second. Ā Hardly enough for anyone to notice. Ā Her mind raced to calculate the appropriate response to that question, a satisfactorily casual yet intelligent response. Ā ā€œM. Wayne isnā€™t in charge of research. Ā You are. Ā Not to mention, I highly doubt the CEO would be involved enough in the research and development projects to know what was going on. Ā You I take as a man who knows what is going on with all your ongoing projects.ā€
He nodded. Ā She wasnā€™t wrong, or normally wouldnā€™t be. Ā Mr. Wayne usually was not involved in any projects and with the exception of one particular project they were having issues with, he wouldnā€™t know the particulars. Ā ā€œA very dangerous and elaborate plan. Ā Why didnā€™t you make an appointment with me? Ā Or just stop me on the street?ā€ he prodded, hoping for her thought process.
Marinette laughed lightly. Ā ā€œI donā€™t imagine I would have had a chance in Hell of making an appointment with you in your office. Ā I have no standing, no name, no significance that would have attracted any PA worth their saltā€™s attention. Ā I would have been pawned off onto a low ranking employee to handle, if I was handled at all. Ā And something like this needed to be taken to you. Ā
ā€œAs for running into you on the street, I canā€™t imagine you would have responded positively to getting accosted on the street. You seem more than capable of handling yourself with grace in the face of a pest. Ā I doubt I would have gotten more than a few words in. Ā At a gala however,ā€ she grinned conspiratorially at him. ā€œSocietal convention. Ā Almost absolute certainty of at least one dance where I would have you one-on-one for a few minutes. Ā Hostage audience. Ā Figured I could use it to my advantage for once.ā€
Lucius smiled back at her ingenuity. Ā ā€œThereā€™s an application process he could have gone through,ā€ he noted. Ā
Mari nodded and looked out to the crowd, scanning it. Ā ā€œRight, applying to M. Fedor Rabler,ā€ she said distractedly. Ā ā€œHe did that.ā€
Lucius nodded in understanding. Ā Their application process was tough. Ā Lots of amazing candidates didnā€™t get through. He had to respect her devotion to her friend, to risk coming here and potentially making an enemy of Wayne Enterprises if heā€™d been that sort of man. Ā His eyes turned sympathetic. Ā ā€œIā€™m sorry he was passed over.ā€
ā€œYou know, Iā€™ve noticed Elspeth Cole puts forth a lot of inventions and extremely varied ones at that,ā€ she continued as though she hadnā€™t heard his consolation. Ā ā€œMost inventors, you can see their process, you can see how they got from one invention to the next, but hersā€¦ theyā€™re so varied. Ā Itā€™s almost like theyā€™re coming from completely different people.ā€ Ā Lucius watched her carefully, waiting to see where she was going with this. Ā ā€œThatā€™s them, isnā€™t it? Ā Dancing together. Ā Awfully close for purely colleagues.ā€
Lucius followed her sight line to Ms. Cole and Mr. Rabler dancing extremely closely. Ā Not obscenely, but perhaps a bit closer than was normally acceptable at a society event such as this one. Ā ā€œItā€™s hardly incriminating that two people with expertise in electrical engineering would get together,ā€ he said slowly.
ā€œMax is amazing. Ā Brilliant,ā€ Marinette said, seemingly not noticing her non-sequitur. ā€œHe created an AI that helped the Parisian superheroes locate and defeat our supervillain at only 14.ā€ Ā Luciusā€™ brow rose. Ā That was certainly promising. Ā He wondered what would have caused them not to take such an applicant. Ā Surely there was some sort of embellishment there, but as he studied her, she seemed entirely genuine. Ā
ā€œHeā€™s being scouted by several high profile companies including Lexcorp and Palmer Technologies.ā€ Ā She turned her attention back to Lucius, a curious pout on her lips. ā€œBut not Wayne Enterprises.ā€ Ā She looked away with clearly forced casualness. ā€œLexcorp and Palmer, theyā€™re offering pretty impressive packages. Ā Not as good as he deserves in my opinion, but I may be a bit biased. Ā Wayne Enterprises howeverā€¦ nothing. Ā Not even an offer.
ā€œNow, I donā€™t really have a dog in the fightā€¦ other than wanting my friend to be safe and treated with the respect he deserves. But Palmer Technologies gets blown up by a villain or its inventors kidnapped far too frequently for me to be comfortable with my friend working there. Ā And Lexcorpā€¦ā€ Ā She looked down as if in thought before looking back at him again with a determined look in her eye.
ā€œYou know, I get a feeling sometimes. Ā I canā€™t really explain it, just get a feeling about people or things. Ā Iā€™ve found itā€™s best for me and the people around me if I listen to that feeling and that feeling tells me Lex Luthor is the last person who should be trusted with a brain as brilliant as Maxā€™s.ā€ Ā She looked back over to Mr. Rabler and Ms. Cole. Ā ā€œThat same feeling told me Max shouldnā€™t trust the application process for Wayne Enterprises.ā€ Ā
She looked back at Lucius with an apologetic smile. ā€œNo offense. Ā So, I convinced Max to make a small part of his submission just a little off. Ā Just a bit. Enough that even an expert could miss it, but if itā€™s wrong the project could never work. Ā It took a lot of convincing to get him to do it. Ā He refused to believe he had anything to worry about in Wayne Enterprises with its stellar reputation.ā€ Ā She scrunched up her face in annoyance. Ā ā€œBut that feeling, you know? Ā I couldnā€™t get over it. Ā After a lot of work, I convinced him there was no harm. Ā After all, if he was hired he could fix it. Ā If he wasnā€™tā€¦ well, you shouldnā€™t be using what he presented anyway, right? No harm, no foul as you Americans say.ā€
ā€œNo,ā€ Lucius agreed. Ā ā€œThat would be theft and completely against WE policy and standards. Ā In fact, we should not be asking applicants to submit anything like that in the first place.ā€
Marinette smiled and nodded approvingly. Ā ā€œIā€™ve heard rumblings, or rather Max has, of WE getting into transmutation of materials. Ā Just canā€™t get that algorithm right though, can you? Ā Algorithms are hard. Ā Just a little off and nothing works.ā€
He stared at her. Ā That was a secret project. Ā Other departments in Wayne Enterprises didnā€™t even know about it. Ā ā€œI canā€™t comment on ongoing projects.ā€ Ā
ā€œI never did show you what Max is capable of, did I?ā€ Ā She gave him a bright smile and reached down to press a disguised button on her belt. Lucius tensed and cursed himself for exposing himself to whatever she was about to do. Ā A wave of emerald green washed over the front of her bodice as the blood red decorated mesh overlay turned into a brilliant emerald green that reflected the lights now rather than absorbing it.
Luciusā€™ eyes widened in surprise, a feat very few had been able to draw out of him. Ā ā€œHe designed the fabric?ā€ he whispered out. Ā He reached out tentatively to touch the fabric at her shoulder.
Marinette grinned brilliantly at his reaction. Ā It was no less than Max deserved. Ā Heā€™d worked incredibly hard on it. Ā ā€œHe did,ā€ she nodded in confirmation, ā€œand the software that controls it. Ā The whole dress can change but weā€™re kind of surrounded here and I didnā€™t want to attract too much attention.ā€ Ā She let him touch it for a moment before pushing the button again to turn it back into the black, then allowing him to feel the mesh to confirm it was the same fabric. Ā ā€œHe has ideas for changing the texture as well, but limited resources you know? Something Iā€™d hope wouldnā€™t be an issue at WE.ā€
ā€œHow does it work?ā€ Ā His eyes were still focused on the fabric at her shoulder. He took a quick look at the rest of the bodice, but quickly snapped his eyes back to her shoulder. Ā The neckline was conservative, but it was still rather unbecoming to stare at the young womanā€™s chest.
Marinette laughed. Ā ā€œYouā€™ll have to ask Max that. Ā I just designed the dress. Ā I donā€™t really understand the mechanics behind it, but he does. Ā I doubt Ms. Cole can say the same.ā€
Lucius stared in awe at her shoulder before looking back up to her eyes and nodding in understanding. Ā ā€œInteresting. Ā Iā€™ll take that under advisement. Ā Maybe we should be scouting you as well.ā€
Mari laughed. Ā ā€œNo, thank you. Ā Iā€™m not an inventor. Ā Iā€™m a designer. Ā But I appreciate the interest.ā€
Lucius nodded and led her off the dancefloor with the end of the song. Ā ā€œInventor or not, we can always use someone with intuition, intelligence, and ingenuity like youā€™ve demonstrated.ā€ Ā
Marinette gave him a brilliant, somewhat familiar smile. ā€œThatā€™s very flattering. Ā Thank you, M. Fox. Ā But tonight is about Max. Ā I have my own, separate plans for my future.ā€
Lucius nodded in understanding. Ā ā€œOur loss,ā€ he answered sincerely. Ā ā€œIf you ever need any help or advice, please feel free to call me. Ā Iā€™m sure Mr. Kante will have it soon enough and can pass it onto you.ā€ Ā He looked back down to her shoulder again. Ā ā€œIf I mayā€¦ā€ Ā He motioned toward her shoulder. Ā
Marinette laughed. Ā ā€œOf course. Ā I understand how truly impressive it is. Ā Itā€™s been incredibly inspirational, thinking of the options.ā€
ā€œAnd what did your intuition tell you about tonight?ā€ He looked up to meet her eyes, curious about her answer.
Marinetteā€™s face went slack for a moment before she pasted on a bittersweet smile. Ā ā€œThat it would be costly but worth it.ā€
Lucius quirked his head to the side. Ā ā€œIn what way?ā€
Marinette shook her head absently and took a sudden interest in M. Foxā€™s tie. Ā ā€œIā€™m not sure yet.ā€
Mr. Foxā€™s eyes softened. Ā ā€œWould he be available to meet on Monday?ā€
Marinette grin and snapped her eyes up to him. Mission success! Ā Max was going to get his interview! Ā ā€œHe can be.ā€
ā€œIā€™d actually like to speak with both of you, if you donā€™t mind. Ā In my office at 10 Monday?ā€ he offered. Ā
Marinette faltered. Ā ā€œIn Wayne Enterprises?ā€
Lucius chuckled. Ā ā€œNaturally.ā€
Marinette swallowed heavily. Ā ā€œWhy donā€™t we meet somewhere else? Ā Early morning coffee perhaps?ā€ she offered instead with an artificial smile. Ā ā€œHereā€™s my card. Ā Have someone give me a call or text and I can arrange it. Ā Heā€™s scheduled to fly in tomorrow morning. Ā He was supposed to meet with Lexcorp Monday morning, but heā€™ll be at coffee to meet you instead.ā€
Lucius smiled back at her as he slipped her card into his pocket. Ā ā€œI greatly appreciate your candor and support Ms. Dupain Cheng.ā€ Ā He took her hand in both of his to shake it. Ā ā€œI cannot tell you how good it was to meet you. Ā And if you ever get one of those feelings about me or Wayne Enterprises, let me know, okay?ā€
ā€œLucius.ā€
Lucius froze at the cold voice, not accustomed to that tone of voice directed at him. Ā He looked over curiously and missed Marinette freezing before pushing another button on her belt.

Do you have any autistic Scout headcanons? :P
Hell yeah!
Iā€™ve actually thought about this a lot. A lot of people might think that Scout has ADHD, but I think he either has both ADHD and autism or just autism.
This is both because labeling Scout as having just ADHD is kind of a low-hanging fruit, and I also want to explore his symptoms a little more. So, in a word, I do, and thank you for asking about them!
*****************
Scoutā€™s Spectrum:
So, where exactly does Scout fall on the autism spectrum?
First of all, he probably has both ADHD and autism, but wasnā€™t diagnosed with the latter until much later. This means that some of his symptoms were taken into account, but not all.
The ones that were paid attention to ramped up out of control, and the ones he didnā€™t hear about were stuffed away.
His ADHD symptoms include impulsiveness, need for stimulation, hyperfixations, forgetfulness, and insomnia; his autism symptoms include trouble with social skills, stimming, near inability to remember names and faces, lack of eye contact, hyperfixations again, and sensory processing issues, especially with noise and touch.
He used to have a lot of meltdowns when he was younger, usually about wearing new clothes and the amount of noise his eight brothers generated.
However, he was teased and pushed into masking nearly all the time, and made his whole personality about his ADHD, since that was what everyone accepted.
As he got older, he usually wrote off any autistic tendencies as either his ADHD or just ā€œlittle habitsā€ of his.
During his middle school years, he used energy drinks to bounce back from being exhausted every day after school. This would work, except those energy drinks would upset his ADHD, and would make it much harder to focus on even basic conversation.
After a while, he got such bad grades and had such a hard time making friends that Scout just stopped going to school altogether.
Baseball helped his focus, and the quick movement and thinking made a lot of sense to him. He never had to wait very long for the next development, and the instant gratification and community it provided supplemented what he never got at school.
With sports on his side, he rarely ever drank any energy drinks (the coach would never let them on the field), and he drank bucketfuls of water during every meet and game. Those teenage years were probably the healthiest he ever was.
However, with the amount of rumbles he got into with his brothers, and the turf wars that constantly raged in those neighborhoods, it was only a matter of time before his crime caught up with him.
After his first incarceration, he was booted from the team, which led to a downward spiral of unhealthy coping mechanisms - which included fighting someone tooth and nail whenever he could.
Even if he lost the fight, it not only catered to his impulsive nature and impatience, but also gave him roughly the same sense of friendship and camaraderie that baseball had.
One thing led to another, and by the time Mann Co. found him, Scout was a monster in hand to hand (and bat to bat) and had racked up quite the criminal record.
A perfect mercenary, ripe for the picking.
On The Team:
Scout very quickly adopted the ā€œstupid, scrappy Boston boyā€ persona.
It was the only thing that made sense, and it kept him from having to try too hard in both the battlefield and socially.
Besides, that meant that he could be as silly, forgetful, and fidgety as he wanted, and no one would bat an eye.
And if he ever needed to take a break from the team, he figured everyone would appreciate the quiet.
The only thing that ever gave him away was him occasionally dissociating right when battle began, especially if the day had been stressful.
It was usually how he calmed down after a fight when he was young, but now he sometimes slid into that state when he was overwhelmed.
However, a yell from one of his teammates would usually snap him out of it.
Medic noticed this pretty early on, and wanted to look more into it, but Scout would keep making excuses not to get a mental examination.
He would blame it on zoning out, being tired, drinking too many Bonks - whatever it took for people to stop asking.
And, eventually, they did.
Even Medic stopped asking after a while - he couldnā€™t get a thing out of Scout.
This ā€œtry so little that when you do try itā€™s above averageā€ charade worked for a long time. In fact, it went on for so long that Scout forgot how much he was actually capable of.
He began to internalize the stupidity, the exacerbation, the many comments on how dumb he was, everything.
The only time he ever gave his all was on the battlefield - moving fast, memorizing strategies, doing complicated footwork, knowing exactly how much force it took to crush someoneā€™s skull with his bat.
That was one of the only things that he felt good doing, the only thing he could really work on without him being ā€œfound out.ā€
That and drawing, though he never showed the actual pieces to anyone. It was all stick figures and crooked lines with everyone else.
Sometimes, though, Scout wouldnā€™t be paying attention and heā€™d let something slip.
One time, Engineer was looking for his screwdriver, and couldnā€™t seem to find it anywhere.
Scout, not looking up from his comic, said, ā€œUnder the couch cushion, hard hat.ā€
Engineer bent down and reached into the couch, and his hand came back with his red and yellow striped screwdriver.
ā€œWell Iā€™ll be damnedā€¦ā€
At first Engineer thought Scout had just hid it, but Scout explained, still not paying attention:
ā€œLast time we went out on thā€™ field, you had it on your belt, like always. But I was walkinā€™ by your workshop, you were usinā€™ a quarter to tighten a screw or somethinā€™. Your screwdriver had to be somewhere between the battlefield and your workshop. Engie, youā€™re like freakinā€™ clockwork. Every day, after a fight, you go to the kitchen, get a water, go to that couch, between the second and third cushion from the left, and sit there. Then ya go back to the fridge to get lunch and a beer, and ya go to your workshop until somebody needs you for somethinā€™. Your back loop in your tool belt is looser than all the others, ā€˜cause the screwdriver pulls against it when you sit down. The shank was probably in between the two cushions, and when you got up, it fell in. Demo, Pyro, and Heavy all sit on the second or third cushion at some point, so it got shimmied down. And since thatā€™s the only time you sat down, ā€˜cause you woulda heard it if it dropped on the floor, and Iā€¦uhā€¦ā€
ā€œIā€™ll be damned,ā€ Engie repeated, and felt the back tool belt loop. It was indeed loose.
Scout finally looked up, and realized what had happened.
ā€œUh, uh - l-lucky guess, huh Engie?ā€
Engineer squinted behind his goggles. ā€œYeahā€¦real luckyā€¦ā€
What ensued was Engie trying to get Scout to turn into a B.L.U Spy by chasing him around with his wrench. After a few good hits, though, Engineer saw that it was the teammate he knew and loved.
ā€œButā€¦how didjaā€¦?ā€
Scout threw his hand up, the other rubbing the back of his head where heā€™d been hit.
ā€œI toldja Engie! Lucky guess! Jesus!ā€
Ever since then, Scout chose his words more carefully.
The Breakdown:
But, unfortunately, Scout could not pretend forever.
There was one week where Scoutā€™s assignment count was so high that, if he wasnā€™t in a fight, he was on a mission.
Usually, Pauling wouldnā€™t trust him with so much, but no one else was available - or willing - to do the jobs.
Even when she was getting concerned about the amount of hours Scout was putting in, he blew it off.
ā€œItā€™s no sweat, Miss Pauling! Their practically givinā€™ me the pay day. Those yahoos donā€™t know who theyā€™re messinā€™ with.ā€
Over time, though, Scout had a harder and harder time staying focused and alert.
Heā€™d sleep through alarms, stare off into space, zone out completely during briefing (not that he didnā€™t already do that), have a hard time hearing people in battle - even through his headset - ignore Spyā€™s taunts, and even forget to bring his bat onto the field.
Nothing seemed to help - Bonk!, warming up, stretching, cold showers, setting reminders, nothing.
And the team was starting to notice.
At first it was with the regular frustration - maybe Scout was just being lazy.
But as time went on, and his condition grew worse, their scorn turned into worry. They implored Medic to do something, but he had no way of getting through to Scout.
The doctor wasnā€™t above simply sedating him and dragging him into his lab for a check-up. However, he had a feeling that this was more than a physical issue.
The worst came when Scout was doing a routine battle with the B.L.U team on the field.
Everything had started out okay - he even remembered to bring his bad this time - but suddenly, everything was ear-splittingly loud.
He couldnā€™t focus on more than one sound at once, much less communicate the best course of action to his teammates.
He ended up hiding in a dilapidated shed, in a dusty, dark corner, somewhere between zoning out and panicking.
Scoutā€™s head was in his knees, he was shaking, close to crying, when a sudden splitting of wood roused him.
A B.L.U Soldier had kicked his way into the shed, either having heard Scout or to hide from the other team.
Scout was stunned at first, but something of a blind terror filled him. He picked up his bat, screamed, and started pummeling the surprised Soldier.
At some point, he threw aside his bat and began to swing punch after punch, just like he did in his gang days when he had felt overwhelmed. Still screaming. Still crying.
By the time Scout had dissolved into a rocking, sobbing mess, the Soldier was long dead, with a gigantic pool of blood staining Scoutā€™s shoes.
No one even knew where Scout was until a few hours later, when Spy heard a faint note of ā€œSexbombā€ coming from Scoutā€™s Walkman.
Scout had crawled into the shedā€™s framework, between the outer and inner wall, and was playing a specific verse over and over and over again, looking like he was on another plane of existence.
Spy immediately called for Medic, who had to lift Scout out by the underarms through a jagged hole in the side of the building. By then, the fight was over, so they could take him directly to the lab.
Medicā€™s Evaluation:
ā€œIā€™m guessing zhis is your first mental breakdown?ā€
ā€œMentalā€¦doc, I ainā€™t crazy. Wait, youā€™re not goinā€™ to put me in a straight jacket, are ya?ā€
ā€œIf youā€™re not doing anyzhing later.ā€
Medic started to laugh, but quickly realized this might not be the time.
ā€œNo, Scout, everyvun has a mental breakdown at least vunce in their lives. Itā€™s aā€¦how do you sayā€¦a vake-up call of sorts. Vhen your body has no other options left.ā€
ā€œWhaddya mean?ā€
ā€œFor zhe past few months, you health, both physical and mental, has been deteriorating. You eat less. You talk less. Your attacks are lackluster. You have bags under your eyes. You flinch vhen somevun yells for you. You stare off into space. Your routine, vhich usually has at least some changes, has become stringent, as if you canā€™t possibly expend any more energy into extra activities. You have avoided Demoman on zhe battlefield, even though you usually use him for cover.ā€
Medic flipped through his notes.
ā€œI have pages and pages of your decline. However, as a scientist, I believe it is caused by zhe same source. And, though I usually respect my patientā€™s right to privacy vhen it comes to these sorts of matters, I believe youā€™ve been keeping something from me. Something that I should know as your general practitionerā€¦your doctor.ā€
Scout shrugged, already shutting out the conversation.
Medic sighed.
ā€œMaybe I tried to talk to you about zhis too soon. After all, youā€™ve just had a very sudden and exhausting episode. Butā€¦perhapsā€¦ā€
Medic took a sheet of printer paper from his clipboard and a spare pen from his pocket.
ā€œā€¦zhere is an alternative.ā€
Scout was still unresponsive, but Medic continued.
ā€œZhere is a patient in my vaiting room vis a metal pole through the chest. It vill take me at least an hour to properly remove it, and a few minutes more to heal zhe area. Vhile I do zhat, vhy donā€™t you draw how you feel?ā€
Medic smiled.
ā€œI know how much it grounds you.ā€
It wasnā€™t until Medic left that Scout actually picked up the pen, but he began drawing immediately.
For the first time in a while, he wasnā€™t trying to hide his strokes or scratch up the cleaner lines. No more stick figures. No more pretending.
Five minutes later, he was fully engrossed.
Medic started to walk in at one point, but, seeing how relaxed Scout was, decided to give him a few more minutes.
He deserved it.

I keep seeing people calling Good Omens queer bating and a I can't help but ask why? I read the Aziraphale/Crowley relationship threw an Ace lens and they are clearly as close to married as they are probably going to get without stepping on holy ground.... and they love each other... why is it considered queer bating?
Personally, I think it's mostly young queer fans turning legitimate grievances on the wrong target. A case of getting so fed up with queerbaiting in media as a whole that they're instinctually lashing out at anything that seems to resembles it on the surface, without taking the time to consider whether this is, in fact, the thing they're mad at. Good Omens is a scapegoat, if you will. The equivalent of snapping at your partner after a long day. Your friend was an asshole, your boss was an asshole, the guy in traffic was an asshole, and then you come home to your partner who says something teasing and you take it as another asshole comment because you've just been surrounded by assholeness all day, to the point where your brain is primed to see an attack. Your partner wasn't actually an asshole, but by this point you're (understandably) too on guard to realize that. Unless someone sits you down and kindly reminds you of the difference between playful teasing and a legitimate insult - the nuance, if you will - your hackles are just gonna stay up and you'll leave the room, off to phone a different friend to tell them all about how your partner was definitely an asshole to you.
Only in this case, that "friend" is a fan on social media doing think pieces on the supposed queerbaiting of Good Omens, spreading that idea to a) people who aren't familiar with the show themselves and b) those who, like that original fan, have come to expect queerbaiting and thus aren't inclined to question the latest story with that mark leveled against it. Because on the surface Good Omens can look a lot like queerbaiting. Here are two queer coded characters who clearly love each other, but don't say "I love you," don't kiss, don't "prove" that love in a particular way. So Gaiman is just leading everyone on, right?
Well... no. This is where the nuance comes in, the thing that many fans aren't interested in grappling with (because, like it or not, media is not made up of black and white categories; queerbaited and not-queerbaited. Supernatural's finale is proof enough of that...) I won't delve into the most detailed explanation here, but suffice to say:
Gaiman has straight up said it's a love story. He's just not giving them concrete labels like "gay" or "bi" or "asexual," etc. because they are literally not human. Gaiman has subscribed to an inclusive viewpoint in an era where fans are desperate for unambiguous rep that homophobes cannot possibly deny. The freedom to prioritize any interpretation - yes, including a "just friends" interpretation - now, in 2021, feels like a cop-out. However, in this case it's an act of world building (they are an angel and a demon, not bound by human understanding of identity) meeting a genuine desire to make these characters relatable to the entire queer community, not just particular subsets. Gaiman has said they can be whatever we want because the gender, sexuality, and romantic attraction of an angel and a demon is totally up for debate! However, some fans have interpreted that as a dismissal of canonical queerness; the idea that fans can pretend they're whatever they want... but it's definitely not canon. It is though. Them being queer is 100% canon, it's just up to us to decide what kind of queer they are. This isn't Gaiman stringing audiences along, it's him opening the relationship up to all queer possibilities.
We know he's not stringing us along (queerbaiting) because up until just a few days ago season two didn't exist. Queerbaiting is a deliberate strategy to maintain an audience. A miniseries does not need to maintain its audience. You binge it in one go and you're done, no coming back next year required. The announcement for season two doesn't erase that context for season one. No one knew there would be more content and thus the idea that they would implement a strategy designed to keep viewers hooked due to the hope for a queer relationship (with no intent to follow through) is... silly.
In addition, this interpretive, queer relationship between Crowley and Aziraphale existed in the book thirty years ago. Many fans are not considering the difference between creating a totally new story in 2019 and faithfully adapting a story from 1990 in 2019. Good Omens as representation meant something very different back then and that absolutely impacts how we see its adaptation onto the small screen. To put this into perspective, Rowling made HUGE waves when she revealed that she "thought of" Dumbledore as gay in an interview... in 2007. Compare that to the intense coding 17 years before. Gaiman was - and still is - pushing boundaries.
Which includes being an established ally, particularly in his comics. Queerbaiting isn't just the act of a single work, but the way an author approaches their work. Gaiman does not (to my knowledge) have that mark against him and even if he did, he's done enough other work to offset that.
Finally, we've got other, practical issues like: how do you represent asexuality on the screen? How do you show an absence of something? Yeah, one or both of them could claim that label in the show, outright saying, "I'm asexual," but again, Gaimain isn't looking to box his mythological figures into a single identity. So if we want that rep... we have to grapple with the fact that this is one option for what it looks like.
Even if he did want to narrow the representation down to just a few identities for the show, should Gaiman really be making those major changes when he's only one half of the author team? Pratchett has, sadly, passed on and thus obviously has no say in whether his characters undergo such revisions. Even if fans hate every other argument, they should understand that, out of respect, Good Omens is going to largely remain the same story it was 30 years ago.
And those 6,000 years are just the beginning! Again, this was meant to be a miniseries of a single novel, a novel that, crucially, covered only Crowley and Aziraphale's triumph in being able to love one another freely. That's a part of their personal journey. Yeah, they've been together in one sense for 6,000 years, but that was always with hell and heaven on their backs, to say nothing of the slow-burn approach towards acknowledging that love, for Aziraphale in particular. We end the story at the start of their new relationship, one that is more free and open than it ever was before. They can be anything to one another now! The fact that we don't see that isn't a deliberate attempt on the author's part to deny us that representation, but only a result of the story ending.
So yeah, there's a lot to consider and, frankly, I don't think those fans are considering it. Which on a purely emotional level I can understand. I'm pissed about queerbaiting too and the knee-jerk desire to reject anything that doesn't meet a specific standard is understandable. But understandable doesn't mean we don't have to work against that instinct because doing otherwise is harmful in the long run. We need to consider when stories were published and what representation meant back then. We need to consider how we adapt those stories for a modern audience. We need to acknowledge that if we want the inclusivity that "queer" provides us, that includes getting characters whose identity is not strictly defined by the author as well as characters with overtly canonical labels. We need both. We likewise need to be careful about when having higher standards ends up hurting the wrong authors - who are our imperfect allies vs. those straight up unwilling to embrace our community at all? And most importantly, we have to think about how we're using the terms we've developed to discuss these issues. Queerbaiting means something specific and applying it to Good Omens not only does Good Omens a disservice, but it undermines the intended meaning of "queerbaiting," making it harder to use correctly in the future. Good Omens is not queerbaiting and trying to claim it is only hurts the community those fans are speaking up for.

Family Troubles
Pairing: JJ x Routledge!Reader, mostly John B x Routledge!Reader sibling dynamicĀ
Summary: (Requested) After the death of your brother, you move to the mainland with a nice foster family. Months later, you get the biggest shock of your life that leaves you questioning what you want.
Note: Iā€™m so sorry this took so long. I hope this is what you were looking for!
Word Count: 4.6k
Tumblr media
You peek your eyes open to another sunny autumn day as your alarm echos off the walls of your room through your phone. For the first time in a long time, you didnā€™t dread the day ahead of you. Because you feel like youā€™re finally living a life worth living.Ā
Itā€™s been about three months since John B disappeared. The worst three months of your life. You never would have imagined living a life without your twin brother. It was lonely and heart wrenching. You didnā€™t think you would get through it. And living with the Cameronā€™s didnā€™t make your life any easier. Ward tried blocking you off from the rest of the world. He was afraid of what you could do to his reputation despite knowing most people wouldnā€™t believe you. You were just a Pogue with a criminal background.Your word means nothing to Kooks and cops alike. Nonetheless, Ward didnā€™t want to take any chances.Ā
It wasnā€™t until you finally got in touch with Cheryl, your social worker, that your life started to change for the better. You couldnā€™t believe the irony of running to your social worker for help when youā€™ve been running away from her all summer. Surprisingly, she did hear you. She listened to you. She believed you! Although there wasnā€™t much she could do about Ward, she could help you get out from under his neglectful guardianship.Ā
She placed you in a foster home with an eager Spanish American couple on the main land. Of course you werenā€™t ecstatic about it. Foster care was never something you wanted to be placed in. Especially without your brother. But at the time, anything was better than living with Ward Cameron.Ā
The worst part of the process was telling your best friends. Kie and Pope, although disappointed, were happy for you because they knew this was what was best for you. JJ, however, didnā€™t understand how you could be so cool calm and collected about moving. Losing you to Figure Eight was hard enough and now he was going to have open water separating you two? He didnā€™t cope well with the news. He barely talked to you as you gathered your stuff to leave, almost didnā€™t show up to say his final goodbye with Kie and Pope. But he came as you were about to get on the ferry with Cheryl. The two of you cried and told each other you were sorry. You kissed his cheek and slipped a small piece of paper with your new address into his pockets. JJ reluctantly let you go with a promise that he will visit you as soon as he could and you believed him. Because he was your best friend, your soul mate, and partner in crime.
JJ saves up every week to take the ferry to visit you. He usually comes every Sunday, respecting your foster parentsā€™ wishes that he not stay the night. At first they were wary of him coming over - they know about your past from the social worker and the News and how JJ was a part of it. They wanted you to have a new beginning. A fresh start. They believed you when you said your brother wasnā€™t a murderer and that you and your friends did nothing wrong. They were just afraid that JJ would convince you to come back to the Outer Banks (which heā€™s tried), or make you regress to past trouble making behaviors. But you explained to Maria and Luis, your foster parents, how important JJ is to you and that he needed to be a part of you life no matter where you were living. So they allowed him weekend visits, always making sure to keep an eye on you when he was here.Ā
Someone lightly taps on your door until you say,Ā ā€œCome in.ā€Ā
Maria pokes her head in and smiles when she sees youā€™re awake.Ā ā€œMorning, honey. Your appointment is in thirty minutes. Will you be ready to leave soon?ā€
You offer her a smile and nod.Ā ā€œYeah, Iā€™ll be down in ten.ā€
Maria nods.Ā ā€œOkay.ā€
She closes the door gently, leaving you alone to get ready for your appointment with your therapist. You agreed with your new foster parents to go to therapy once a week. They thought it would help you move on and grow and get rid of the nightmares that sometimes terrorize you at night. You went because you felt like you owed it to them to make an effort. They werenā€™t like the other foster couples you hear horror stories about. If they were gonna be there for you, you were gonna be there for them too.Ā
The therapy sessions were working. Youā€™re more open to talking about what you went through. The therapist never gave you any inclination that she was judging you or analyzing you. She just listened and asked you how you were feeling about everything. She helped you adjust to this new life on the mainland and taught you new coping strategies that didnā€™t involve getting into fights or arguing with the cops. She helped you through your anxiety about starting a new school and making new friends. She even prescribed you some anxiety meds that helped with your nightmares and panic attacks.
Both Maria and Luis drive you to your therapy appointment. You silently question why the both of them felt the need to accompany you to your appointment. You mentally list all the reasons as to why they both would want to come when usually itā€™s just one or the other. Youā€™re too afraid to ask, thinking theyā€™re about to drop a bomb on you and send you back to the island. You donā€™t want to hear it, procrastinating the inevitable for as long as possible.Ā
When Dr. Hildegard greets you in the waiting room, she waves not only you but your foster parents as well into her office. The three of you take a seat on the brown leather couch in front of her chair. You awkwardly glance between your therapist and your foster parents, trying to read the room. You dig your nails into the skin of your hand to keep yourself calm, focusing on the slight stinging pain it leaves you.
ā€œGood morning, Y/N,ā€ Dr. Hildegard says. She takes notice of your fidgeting hands and smiles.Ā ā€œI know you must be confused and anxious right now. But Maria and Luis have something they want to ask you and felt you would be more comfortable having this conversation with me present.ā€
ā€œOkay...ā€ You say wearily.Ā
Luis and Maria hold each otherā€™s hands as they turn to look at you. You feel a little better when you see a smile on their face, making you think it isnā€™t going to be bad news.Ā
ā€œY/N, how would feel about officially being a part of our family?ā€
You glance between your therapist and your foster parents and tilt your head in confusion.Ā ā€œI donā€™t understand...ā€
ā€œY/N,ā€ Dr. Hildegard says.Ā ā€œMaria and Luis would like to adopt you.ā€
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Ā
Meanwhile, back at the Outer Banks, JJ is getting ready to leave his house to make the last ferry to the mainland. He had to pick up another shift to afford another boat ride and a date for tonight, which left him racing against the clock.
Someone knocks on his front door.Ā ā€œShit,ā€ He curses and looks at the clock. 3:04. He needed to leave twenty minutes ago. He doesnā€™t have time to talk to anyone right now. He figures itā€™s his dadā€™s probation officer or druggie looking for money. So he ignores it so he can find his wallet.Ā
But the knocking persists.Ā
ā€œFuck,ā€ JJ grunts and storms to the front door.Ā ā€œHeā€™s not here -ā€
JJ freezes as he rips the door open. He didnā€™t know who he was going to find, but he definitely wasnā€™t expecting his dead best friend to be standing on his door step.Ā
John B smirks up at his shocked reaction.Ā ā€œHey, stud. Miss me?ā€
JJā€™s brain is doing flips inside his skull, knocking around with so many questions and curses and phrases and shouts. But with that is the immense excitement and relief that takes over his entire body.Ā
JJ jumps on him and wraps his arms around his best friendā€™s shoulders. Tears inevitably prick his eyes and he physically holds onto John B. Heā€™s in utter disbelief. He never thought he would get this opportunity again. To see and hold his best friend - the best friend thatā€™s supposed to be dead.Ā
ā€œWow. Who knew JJ Maybank could get so emotional?ā€ John B jokes, trying to hide his own tears through his laugh.Ā
JJ removes himself from John B and shoves him back by the shoulders lightly. He wipes his upper lips with the back of his hand and sniffles back the rest of his tears.Ā ā€œShut up, bro.ā€ JJ narrows his eyes at the dead man in front of him and asks,Ā ā€œWhat the fuck happened? Whereā€™s Sarah? Is she -ā€
"Sarahā€™s fine. Weā€™re trying to lay low right now. No one knows weā€™re back.ā€
ā€œWhat -ā€
ā€œLook, I know youā€™re confused and thereā€™s so much I need to tell you guys, but first I need to see my sister.ā€ John B says with a sweet grin on his lips at the mention of his sister. He was most excited to see her - his first best friend and partner in crime.Ā ā€œIs she here?ā€Ā JJā€™s face falls at the mention of Y/N because he doesnā€™t know how John B is going to take the news that sheā€™s no longer on the island. John B notices JJā€™s hesitation and immediately getā€™s worried.Ā ā€œWhereā€™s Y/N, JJ?ā€
ā€œSheā€™s not here.ā€
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Ā
You trail behind Maria and Luis as they unlock the front door to their house. The car ride home was awkwardly silent. You didnā€™t know what to say.
ā€œOh...ā€ You said. You werenā€™t expecting that. You thought theyā€™d be telling you the complete opposite. Yet, you didnā€™t know how to feel about their proposition.Ā
Maria and Luis looked at Dr. Hildegard for some insight or ice breaker since you froze up on the spot. You looked back down at your hand and pressed your nails even harder into your skin, leaving half crescent moons indented in your palm.Ā
Dr. Hildegard kept her calm smile and said softly,Ā ā€œWhy donā€™t Y/N and I speak alone and Iā€™ll grab you guys at the end?ā€
Maria and Luis, although a little disappointed by your reaction, agreed and stepped out of the room.
When the two of you were alone, Dr. Hildegard asked,Ā ā€œHow are you feeling right now, Y/N?ā€
ā€œI uh...ā€ You stammered.Ā ā€œI donā€™t know. Shocked, I guess.ā€
ā€œUsually when kids in foster care are offered adoption, theyā€™re excited. Do you like living with Maria and Luis?ā€
ā€œYeah, theyā€™re great. Itā€™s just...ā€ The last time someone offered to take you in as part of their family, it didnā€™t end well. It changed your life for the worst, you lost your only living family member left, and is the reason why you were here today. Although foster care isnā€™t that much different, you didnā€™t expect to stay with Maria and Luis past 18 years old.Ā
ā€œRebuilding a sense of trust can be difficult after past traumas. But taking those necessary steps, of letting new people in your life, can help you over those humps.ā€
ā€œWhy donā€™t you get ready for volleyball practice? Iā€™ll take you there when youā€™re ready,ā€ Luis says as the three of you walked inside.Ā
You nod silently and quickly hide in your room. You fall back on your bed that suddenly feels different than it did this morning. Like a reminder that it didnā€™t belong to you.
But maybe it could.Ā
You get changed for volleyball in a pair of spandex and a t shirt. When you close the drawer, something falls on your dresser, catching your attention.Ā
You pick up the fallen picture frame of you, John B, and the rest of the Pogues on Memorial Day Weekend. Kie had taken a selfie with all of you making silly faces at the camera in the middle of the marsh. That day always brings back amazing memories for you. Oh how you wished you could have another day like that.Ā
You stare a little longer at John B in that photo. What would he say if he was with you right now? Would he say yes to Maria and Luis like he did to Ward? Or would he encourage you to be more careful about who you trust with your life?
Maria knocks on your door and says,Ā ā€œYou ready, sweetheart?ā€Ā
You place the frame back on the dresser and walk out into the hall to meet her.Ā ā€œYes.ā€
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Ā
ā€œSo this couple....ā€ John B says as he follows JJ off the ferry on the mainland.Ā
ā€œMaria and Luis,ā€ JJ says. On the way here, he told John B everything. About how horrendous your life was after John BĀ ā€œdied.ā€ How Ward treated you like a prisoner. How you practically begged Cheryl to help you. How you ended up on the mainland with a lovely married couple.Ā
ā€œAre they...nice?ā€
JJ shrugs.Ā ā€œThey seem like good people. You can tell they donā€™t like me around, but that might just be because they associate me with all the bad shit that happened to us because of Ward.ā€
ā€œDoes she like it here?ā€ John B says as he takes in his new surroundings. As he and JJ walk towards your neighborhood, which isnā€™t too far from the ferry, he thinks about what your life could become here. Nice neighborhoods, friendly towns. Itā€™s definitely better than the Cut. But it wasnā€™t home.Ā
ā€œSheā€™s learning to, I think,ā€ JJ answers honestly.Ā ā€œShe doesnā€™t like being so far away from the Pogues.ā€
ā€œYeah, I can understand the feeling,ā€ John B says. Although it was nice to have Sarah around while they were gone, he couldnā€™t help but feel like a giant chunk of his heart was missing. And that was the Pogues.Ā
ā€œThis is it,ā€ JJ says as they reach the end of a short driveway on the outskirts of town. A two story baby blue home with white shutters and a rose bush. Bigger than the houses on the Cut and smaller than the houses on Figure Eight.Ā
ā€œThis is where sheā€™s been staying?ā€ John B asks. Something swarms inside his brain. He doesnā€™t know if itā€™s betrayal or jealousy.Ā
ā€œYup,ā€ JJ says, popping theĀ ā€˜pā€™,Ā ā€œHer room is on the side.ā€
JJ knocks on the front door and looks down at his watch while he waits. Somehow, he managed to be about ten minutes early. Probably because of John Bā€™s hustle to find his sister as soon as possible.Ā
Luis opens the door with a friendly grin that quickly falters when he sees who accompanies JJ.Ā
ā€œGood Afternoon, Mr. Morales. Is Y/N, here?ā€
Luis looks between the boys and inhales a deep breath. He knows John B from the pictures on the News, the stories in the paper, and the cries of his name when Y/N was terrorized with nightmares in the beginning of her stay.Ā
Although the adoption process just started, he and his wife felt like they were finally forming a family-like bond with Y/N. Dr. Hildegard suggested starting over would be in Y/Nā€™s best interest, encouraging new friendships, joining extracurricular activities at school, staying away from the Outer Banks for a while. Luis and Maria made an exception for JJ, seeing how happy he truly made Y/N. But they never expected to see John B.Ā
And he didnā€™t know what that meant for his family.Ā
John B notices Luisā€™s hesitation and politely holds out his hand.Ā ā€œIā€™m John Booker Routledge. Y/Nā€™s brother.ā€Ā
Luis reluctantly shakes his hand, although apprehensive, never rude. He coughs awkwardly and looks back at JJ without saying a word to John B.Ā ā€œTonightā€™s not a good night -ā€
ā€œWhat do you mean? Sundayā€™s our day. She didnā€™t tell me she was busy -ā€
ā€œIā€™m sorry, son. Maybe next week.ā€ Luis shuts the door before JJ or John B could argue.Ā
John B knocks again and even rings the doorbell.Ā ā€œMr. Morales! Hey! Come back!ā€
ā€œHere,ā€ JJ pulls John B by his arm.Ā ā€œCome here.ā€
JJ and John B round to the side of the house where your window sits right under the middle point of the roof. JJ findā€™s the nearest and smallest rock and tosses it up at the glass of your window.Ā
ā€œWhat are you? Fucking, Romeo?ā€ John B glares at his friend.
ā€œYou have a better idea?ā€ JJ glares right back.Ā ā€œTrust me. I wouldnā€™t put it past Mr. Morales to call the cops if we kept banging on his door. Theyā€™re pretty protective of Y/N, which means theyā€™ve never been truly fond of me.ā€
ā€œMaybe sheā€™s not here,ā€ John B suggests.Ā
ā€œSheā€™s always -ā€
JJ freezes when he hears a car pull into the driveway. They both look at each other before walking back to the front of the house. JJ notices Maria first when she steps out of the car. She has a smilier reaction to John B as her husband which makes John B bounce on his toes nervously.Ā
You donā€™t see him at first, with your back turned to grab your bag. Then you spot him immediately.Ā
You stiffen when you see both JJ and....your dead brother standing on the lawn. Ā Suddenly your mouth feels dry and your heart is beating the crap out of your ribs.Ā
ā€œY/N...ā€ Maria says wearily.Ā
ā€œHey, Dimples,ā€ John B says with a smile, using the nickname he and your father use to call you when you were younger due to the deep pits in your cheeks when you smiled.Ā
Your eyes shift to JJ who looks at you with pinched eye brows. He was expecting a different reaction. One where you run into your brotherā€™s arms and squeeze the shit out of him in a tight hug.Ā
But instead, you were feeling numb. You never expected to be face to face with your brother ever again. You convinced yourself he was really dead because holding onto hope that he was still alive was slowly killing you and even holding you back. You needed closure and that closure was accepting the truth that John B was dead and to never be found.
Yet, here he is. Standing and breathing and watching your reaction with a hurt expression.Ā
ā€œY/N...ā€ Maria says again and lightly touches your shoulder.Ā
ā€œIā€™m fine,ā€ You finally speak, flinching at the way your throat feels scratchy. You swallow and turn to Maria and offer a polite grin.Ā ā€œIā€™ll be right in.ā€
ā€œI donā€™t know...ā€
ā€œPlease, Maria,ā€ You say, this time a tad more forceful but not rude.Ā
Maria hesitantly nods and blocks herself away with the front door.Ā
ā€œI - I donā€™t -Ā ā€œ You huff.Ā ā€œHow?ā€
ā€œThe Phantom...ā€ John B licks his lips nervously.Ā ā€œCapsized...and Sarah and I...well...a shipment boat found us. Took us right to the Bahamas.ā€
ā€œThe Bahamas?ā€ You repeat, taking two steps closer to him.Ā
ā€œYes. Thereā€™s so much I have to tell you -ā€
ā€œLike the part where you couldnā€™t call?ā€ You say accusingly.Ā
John B sighs. He should have expected it, but he didnā€™t prepare for it. He thought youā€™d be happy to see him, but now heā€™s realizing how hurt and confused heā€™s truly left you.
ā€œItā€™s a long story -ā€
ā€œYeah, Iā€™d expect the summary of your last few months to be a long one.ā€ You look at JJ.Ā ā€œDid you know about this?ā€
JJ shakes his head.Ā ā€œHe showed up on my way here.ā€
John B sighs. ā€œLook, Iā€™m sorry I didnā€™t find a way to contact you, but we couldnā€™t! We didnā€™t want the cops realizing we were alive and we were looking for the gold -ā€
ā€œThe gold?ā€ You laugh humorlessly and your hands run up your head to your scalp. Your fingers tug on the roots of your hair in frustration.Ā ā€œThe goldā€™s gone!ā€
ā€œItā€™s not! If you would just listen -ā€
ā€œI donā€™t want to listen, John B! Because I donā€™t care about the gold. That gold took everything from me!ā€ You yell as tears begin to build in your eyes, thinking back to what happened last summer.Ā ā€œI lost Dad, you, my home... I can only see my boyfriend once a week. And I was treated like a prisoner in the house of a murderer!ā€
ā€œI know that it couldnā€™t have been easy for you but -ā€
ā€œNo. You have no idea what it was like for me when you were gone. Because you werenā€™t there!ā€ You cry.Ā ā€œYou left! You were living it up in the Bahamas, searching for gold, while the rest of us cried over your death and suffered the consequences!ā€ Tears were now silently streaming down both John Bā€™s cheeks and JJā€™s as they watched you break down.Ā ā€œI couldn't sleep for weeks. I barely ate. Ward locked me in a room so I couldnā€™t tell anyone about what he did.ā€
ā€œIā€™m sorry,ā€ John B says.Ā ā€œIā€™m so sorry. Iā€™ll make it up to you. Back home -ā€
ā€œHome?ā€ You scoff, shaking your head.Ā ā€œI have a home.ā€
ā€œThis isnā€™t your home,ā€ John B says defensively.Ā
ā€œIt has been. For the past few months. But you wouldnā€™t know that, would you?ā€ You say with a glare. You look at the house behind him, noticing Maria and Luis snooping through the curtains of the window. You think back on what happened today and the options you had. At first it was a hard decision to make and now itā€™s damn right near impossible.Ā ā€œMaria and Luis offered to adopt me.ā€ You say honestly.
John B inhales sharply and JJ furrows his brows.Ā
ā€œWhat?ā€ John B says.
ā€œI didnā€™t give them an answer yet. But this is an opportunity to start over.ā€
John B glares at you.Ā ā€œThink about your family!ā€
ā€œI am!ā€Ā
You suddenly feel exhausted and weak, like the day has lasted over twenty four hours. Your head begins to throb and your neck aches.Ā
You sigh,Ā ā€œLook, Iā€™m happy youā€™re all right and safe and unharmed, from the looks of it. But...I just need some time. Okay?ā€
ā€œY/N...ā€
ā€œPlease, John B?ā€ Youā€™re practically begging.Ā
John B sighs and reluctantly nods his head at your request. At the end of the day, you owe him nothing and he owes you everything.
ā€œOkay,ā€ He agrees.Ā
You walk past him without giving him a hug or anything, afraid youā€™ll break down in sobs and follow his lead back to the Outer Banks. But you need to be strong and figure out what it is you need in life, tired of following the path that always leaves you broken and alone.Ā
You kiss JJā€™s cheek as you walk by him.Ā ā€œIā€™ll call you tomorrow.ā€Ā
JJ squeezes your hand before you disappear into your house. When the door shuts behind you, you slid down it onto the floor, finally letting your sobs wrack through your body. Maria and Luis run to comfort you to the best of their ability, but they donā€™t know how to truly help you.Ā
Later that night, over a cup of tea, you tell Maria and Luis everything. From start to finish. How your dad was obsessed with finding the Royal Merchant, to the compass, to Ward taking you in, finding out he murdered your father and covered up Sheriff Peterkinā€™s murder by using your own brother.Ā
Maria and Luis glance at each other nervously. They know how important family is, which is why they want you a part of theirs so badly. But they never want to take you away from one you already have and love.Ā
ā€œI think you should think long and hard about what you want over the next couple of days,ā€ Luis says.Ā ā€œAnd weā€™ll help you in any way we can.ā€
ā€œIā€™m sorry,ā€ You say, wiping away your tears with a napkin.Ā ā€œI know you didnā€™t sign up for this.ā€
ā€œHoney,ā€ Maria says, wiping another tear with her thumb.Ā ā€œWe donā€™t want you to worry about that. This changes nothing for us, okay?ā€
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Ā
The next day at dinner, Maria and Luis sit you down and offer eager grins. Just like they did at your last therapy appointment.Ā
ā€œY/N...we have something weā€™d like to discuss with you,ā€ Luis says.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Ā
With the help of JJ, you meet John B at the Wreck with the others for a civilized conversation. Now that youā€™ve had a few days to think and calm down, youā€™re able to really appreciate how lucky you are to have John B back in your life.Ā
When you see him standing in the middle of the restaurant, you run to him and squeeze him around his waist as he wraps his arms around your shoulders. You cry into his T shirt, telling him how sorry you are for your outburst.Ā
ā€œItā€™s okay,ā€ John B cries into your hair.Ā ā€œYou donā€™t have to be sorry. I should be the one apologizing.ā€Ā
You pull away and wipe away your tears.Ā ā€œI think weā€™ve both been through hell and back and did what he had to do to survive. Neither of us should apologize.ā€
After giving the other Pogues a hug, the five of you sit down and recap each otherā€™s last three months. John B tells you about his time in the Bahamas, how Sarah is laying low until she gets her shit figured out with her own family, and you describe life at a new town and a new school.
ā€œItā€™s weird. Thereā€™s no division. No Kooks vs. Pogues. I donā€™t know if I like it or miss my enemies,ā€ You say.
When the five of you are ready to say your goodbyes, you pull John b aside and say,Ā ā€œActually, I think thereā€™s a couple of people Iā€™d like you to meet.ā€ John B furrows his brows and follows you to a park where Maria and Luis are waiting at a picnic table.
When they see the two of you approaching, they stand and reach out to shake John Bā€™s hand, officially introducing themselves and apologizing for being rude a week ago.Ā
ā€œItā€™s okay. I understand,ā€ John B says.Ā ā€œThank you for taking care of my sister.ā€
ā€œPleasureā€™s all ours,ā€ Luis smiles.Ā ā€œWeā€™re lucky to be able to meet you.ā€
ā€œY/Nā€™s told us such great things,ā€ Maria adds.Ā
You roll your eyes playfully and look at John B to read his face. He seems to be enjoying himself.Ā
ā€œThatā€™s a first,ā€ He even jokes and looks your way.
ā€œThereā€™s actually something we wanted to ask you,ā€ Luis says and takes his wifeā€™s hand like he did at Dr. Hildegardā€™s. He looks at you to see if you want to explain.Ā ā€œY/N...ā€
You take a deep breath and face your brother.Ā ā€œI have agreed to be adopted by Maria and Luis.ā€
ā€œBut -ā€Ā
ā€œLet me finish,ā€ You cut John B off.Ā ā€œWe talked about it and the three of us are going to move back to the Outer Banks to be closer to you and the Pogues.ā€
ā€œBut...ā€ Maria says like a song with an excited grin.
You mirror her smile and say,Ā ā€œBut...Maria and Luis want to know if you would like to a be a part of their family too?ā€
John Bā€™s brows jump up in surprise.Ā ā€œSeriously?ā€
ā€œI know itā€™s a big decision,ā€ Luis says.
ā€œAnd if you need time, thatā€™s fine,ā€ You say.Ā ā€œBut, I think this will be good for the both of us.ā€
John B looks between you and your foster parents, who he can tell care about you greatly. Of course he wants that too, but just like you were, heā€™s nervous.
ā€œAre you sure about this?ā€ He says softly as to not offend the couple in front of him.
ā€œYes,ā€ You nod.Ā ā€œIā€™m sure.ā€
John B inhales a deep breath and nods.Ā ā€œOkay. Iā€™m in.ā€

Darth Marr and Satele Shan:Ā  Names and Priorities
Iā€™ve reached the point in my Yavin fic that Iā€™m starting to use Marrā€™s POV on occasion.Ā  One of the things Iā€™ve been chewing on (likely to the annoyance of others) has been the Marr-Satele-Theron dynamic during the Yavin 4 op.Ā  Itā€™s clear that Satele and Marr have put aside differences and have become friends (as much as a Force ghost and a self-exiled Jedi Master can be friends) by Chapter 12 of KotFE.Ā
I give credit to @swtorpadawan for posting about Satele on Yavin 4 a few months ago and being willing to have continued discourse about the post -- thank you.Ā  In comments and reblogs, thereā€™s been discussion about how to interpret Sateleā€™s references to Theron during the op and her motivations for why she does this.Ā
This is a spin-off of that post, since Iā€™ll be focusing more on the dynamic between Marr and the Shans instead of Theron and Satele.Ā
During the Yavin op, Theron is consistently referred to as Theron, not as Agent Shan or as Shan.Ā  The issue of his last name is avoided.Ā Ā  A few people (including me) have the headcanon that ā€˜Shanā€™ is a common name in the galaxy, like Smith or Patel or Garcia would be on our world; two people named Shan does not a family connection make, necessarily.Ā  It would explain why Theron doesnā€™t have a code name (though he jokingly? complains about it on first meeting).Ā
And yet, Satele avoids using the name in reference to Theron.Ā  So does Marr.Ā  And Theron doesnā€™t insist on being referred to by his last name, even though his peer, Lana Beniko, is referred to as ā€˜Benikoā€™ by Marr. (Satele never addresses Lana using her name.)
Why the dance?Ā
Honestly, when I try to reverse-engineer dev!logic, in terms of the game design for Yavin 4, Iā€™d guess it was done to help the player differentiate between Grand Master Shan and Agent Shan.Ā  And maybe thatā€™s all it is: calling Theron ā€œTheronā€ just keeps the player from getting confused, especially if the player isnā€™t a Jedi and doesnā€™t know Satele; and/or skipped the Forged Alliances quests and thus doesnā€™t know Theron.
Within the universe, however, whatā€™s an explanation a player can come up with?
The Spies in Question
Theronā€™s name was broadcast across the galaxy as a wanted man for killing Colonel Darok.Ā  He was to be apprehended on sight, but Theron was a spy; spy agencies to this day rarely let any images of their active duty agents be circulated, even if they do go rogue or defect to the other side.Ā  Theronā€™s image in direct connection to his name and job as SIS agent would be on a need-to-know basis.Ā  This has led me to headcanon that Director Trant was well-aware of Theron going off the grid; in fact, he aided and abetted it.
Lana, on the other hand, was a known member of the Sphere of Military Offense.Ā  She commanded troops on Hoth.Ā  She had a known face, and there was an Imperial bounty contract on her head, per Theron at Manaan.Ā  If anything, Lana was in as much danger as Jakarro; someone could try to claim the bounty on her head, since the bounties werenā€™t lifted til the end of the Yavin op.
And yet, Theronā€™s name was the unspeakable one.Ā
Satele and Theron
As Iā€™ve mentioned elsewhere, I feel that the dynamic between Theron and Satele is not that of son and mother; both of them have gotten past that decision.Ā  Rather, itā€™s more similar to a child who was given up for adoption looking for some sort of acknowledgement from his birth family -- itā€™s not love.Ā  Itā€™s not approval.Ā  Itā€™s.... complicated.Ā  Acknowledgement of existence.Ā  Acknowledgement that the decision had impact on Theron well beyond his first year of life.Ā  Acknowledgement that Satele hurt Jace.Ā
Iā€™ve interpreted Theronā€™s bristling at the use of the term ā€œmy agentā€ to be more directed at the possessiveness of the word, yet how far apart they still are, despite the biological connections.Ā  Technically, Yavin 4 was the first time they worked on an op together.Ā  This was their first professional collaboration.Ā  They havenā€™t seen each other socially, they canā€™t talk about their issues/relationship/whatever.....and they have to save the galaxy together.
Giving up Theron doesnā€™t mean Satele felt nothing. She privately struggles with what she did and how it turned out -- still does, based on 6.2. Ā  However, she, like Jace and Theron, believe in serving the cause at great personal cost.Ā  Seeing Theron beat to hell after Rishi bothered her -- it would bother anyone with any sense of compassion (which she does have).Ā  Theron got the beatdown he did because he was taken by the Revanites.Ā  Revan attempted to convince Theron to join him on Yavin 4 by invoking the idea that they are flesh and blood -- family.
Pretty sure Revan wasnā€™t talking about the Malcom side.Ā  Satele knew that.Ā  Was there a sense of protectiveness for Theron because of what happened immediately before Yavin 4?Ā  I think so, yes, but itā€™s not motherly.
Theronā€™s experience on Rishi probably made Satele hyperaware that if Theron was of interest to the Revanites, then the Empire would doubly interested in Theron if they knew that he was not only an heir of Revan, but that the Grand Master of the Jedi Order was his biological mother.Ā Ā  Referring to him as ā€œmy agentā€ may be Sateleā€™s way to avoid using any part of his name on Yavin 4.
Iā€™m willing to bet, regardless of any efforts to ignore or conceal Theronā€™s name, that Marr quickly figured out that the agent who managed to outfox Revan, resist torture, get Marrā€™s attention, and unravel an intergalactic conspiracy was something special to the Republic.Ā  Odds were that this agent had acted against the Empire.
Marr would be interested.
The History of Darth Marr and Satele Shan
Prior to Yavin 4, Marr and Satele had most recently squabbled over Makeb in the Hutt Cartel expansion through their various operatives.Ā  When Marr saw Satele on the Imp side Battle of Rishi, he bowed.Ā  He respected her and she respected him.Ā  I didnā€™t get any other impression from their interactions. They saw each other as equals, though on rival sides; that creates tension, since a fight between them would be a draw or mutually assured destruction.Ā  Itā€™s highly likely they fought against each other in the previous Galactic War (which Iā€™ll talk about below).Ā
Marr was born in 3702 BBY, Satele in 3699 BBY. Ā Theyā€™re about the same age, and they ascended almost equally quickly when the Sith returned in 3681 -- Satele is 18, Marr is 21. Ā I have spoken about how Satele and Jace (who seems to be somewhere between 16 and 20 in the trailer) were essentially just kids when the conflict started. Ā So was Marr.
The big difference, in terms of how their characters are constructed, is that we have the end product of Marr. Ā Period. Ā We donā€™t know what his name was before he took on the name ā€˜Darth Marr.ā€™ Ā We know nothing about his family, his relationships, his struggles. Ā As Marr said later to the player in KotFE, he wanted to be a symbol to the Empire. Ā Marr did not let himself be just a man.
Darth Marr is not the singular leader of the Sith.Ā  Marr is the head of the Sphere of Defense of the Empire for decades, and as of the Battle of Corellia and the death of Darth Decimus, he also becomes the head of the Sphere of Military Strategy. Ā With 2 of Military Spheres in his grasp, Marr was the de facto leader of the armed forces of the Sith Empire. Ā The Sphere of Military Offense passed from Baras to Arho and then to Arkous after Ilum. Ā When Arkous is killed by the playerā€™s character, there is no indication as to who was the next head; that Sphere is never spoken of again in-game.Ā  We may assume Marr took hold of that.Ā  Either way, he has become the de facto leader of the Sith Empire.Ā  His voice, his robes and mask -- immediately recognizable to the whole galaxy.
The creators of content for SWTOR took the opposite approach to Satele.Ā We can read about how her mother Tasiele was forced into exile when Satele was still a child. Ā We meet Satele at 18 in a SWTOR trailer during the first Sith incursion at Korriban. Ā We see her in comics fighting against the Empire. Ā We see her at the Battle of Alderaan against Malgus. Ā In Annihilation,we see bits and pieces of her falling in love with Jace Malcom and hoping she doesnā€™t get too attached... until a pair of permanent complications occur in 3667 BBY: Ā  Jace was severely maimed in the Battle of Alderaan, and Satele got pregnant. Ā Jaceā€™s injuries made him a much harder person than the soldier Satele met in 3681 BBY; he scared her with his hatred of the Empire.Ā
Iā€™ll take a moment here to say that Satele wasnā€™t dumb or naive when she made the decision about Theron. Ā Satele was at least 32 years old, possibly 33 by the time Theron was born in 3666 BBY. She wasnā€™t a teen having a knee-jerk ā€œoh noes, heā€™s evilā€ moment. Ā She had been in a constant state of war for 15 years when she got pregnant. Ā  Itā€™s in that context that Satele was concerned that Jaceā€™s hatred could drag their child to the Dark Side... but also, Sateleā€™s love for her child would make it impossible for her to serve the Republic without a second thought. Ā She couldnā€™t fight and die for the Republic if she was always preoccupied with coming home to her baby.
So she let Theron go. Ā She had other adventures. Ā She was at the Treaty of Coruscant. Ā Satele founded Tython. Ā She became the Grand Master of her order.
We donā€™t get any of that pathos or glory with Marr. Ā  Marr IS. Ā Marr is the Empire. He is the best of them. Ā He has been, is, and will be.Ā
The odds are pretty good that Marr and Satele met each other in combat, directly or indirectly. The bow on Imp side Rishi is a big thing for me that points to that.Ā  Also, look at their responsibilities during the last war.Ā  Marr was responsible for not only defending Korriban and what would become the Imperial core, but also any gains the Sith made over time against the Republic.Ā  Thatā€™s the job of the Sphere of Defense of the Empire; taking planets was somebody elseā€™s rodeo, not Marrā€™s.Ā  His job was to defend... something the Imperial people living on these planets would love him for.Ā  He was their protector against brutish Republic troops and their systemic corruption.Ā
Satele was responsible for winning those territories back; we see her on counter-strikes against the Sith.Ā  Satele is cast as the liberator of people imperiled by the spreading Sith Empire, not a conqueror taking new territory.Ā  Marr probably had to defend against Satele at least once in their careers, possibly multiple times.Ā  If she was absent from the front lines for any period of time, Marr would have noticed; he had to anticipate the next move of Republic counterstrikes as part of his job.Ā
And indeed, Satele was absent for an extended period.Ā  How long Satele was absent from the battlefield due to her pregnancy, we donā€™t know. Satele did continue her battlefield duties for ā€œmonthsā€ after she found out.Ā  The only information we have about post-partum Satele is that she stopped visiting Baby Theron at 6 months old, according to Lost Suns.Ā  I donā€™t think she could just skip off at random while in command, so I think she probably was off the battlefield at least 10 months (last 4 months of her pregnancy, 6 months post-partum), possibly as long as 18 months, since Gnost-Dural reports she was assigned to duty with the Republic Navy at some point in 3665 BBY.Ā  She did give birth on a random planet in a cave, so she didnā€™t exactly have the best medical care immediately.Ā  Maybe there were complications. Maybe she did show early. We donā€™t know.
Regardless of the timeline, Marr would have been paying attention.Ā  Marr would have noticed when Satele Shan stopped fighting for the Republic.Ā  Where was she?Ā  What was she doing?Ā  Was this part of a greater plot by the Republic?Ā  What were they planning?Ā  And when Satele did return, he may well have wondered what she had been up to.Ā  But no matter; she had returned.Ā  Marr had to be ready.
Thereā€™s no obvious indication in the game as to when Marr figures out Satele and Theron are mother and son.Ā  He makes no comment to indicate that he knew before Rishi.Ā  Based on Marrā€™s dialogue in game on the Imperial side, he heavily suggests that he knows who Theron is by the time Iven, the former commandant of the Imperial Guard, is taken into custody and itā€™s time to interrogate him. Satele objects to Marrā€™s plans to torture Iven.Ā  ā€œAnd what do you think your agent has done in the Republicā€™s name?ā€ is Marrā€™s response.Ā
The delivery of ā€˜your agentā€™ is indicative that Marr knows.
Theron himself stated at the end of the Imp side romance that if he was indeed recruited by the player to join the Empire, people would be suspicious that heā€™d be working for his mother.Ā  That would have to include Darth Marr.Ā
Personally, I would guess that the after-action reports from Lana and Theron would have some clues for Marr.Ā  However, once Theron had healed up from the Rishi events, Marr may well have taken one look at Theron standing next to Satele, and then had an epiphany so immense it gave him a headache that Lana felt across the compound.Ā  Thereā€™s the answer. Ā Thatā€™s why she disappeared for almost two years, twenty-nine years ago. Theron Shan.
(According to Jace in Annihilation, Theron has some similar features to his mother. He doesnā€™t specify which ones.)
The Lie of Omission
A lie of omission is permitting an inaccuracy or a falsehood to continue to circulate without correction, even though the person knows the truth. (In contrast, a lie of commission is when you actively make something up or contribute to the lie -- you commit the act lying.) Ā Marr signals he knows who Theron is by the time Iven is retrieved from the Imperial Guard training facility on Yavin, but he never says the name Theron Shan out loud. Ā  Itā€™s simply ā€œthe agentļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ ā€œyour agentā€ or ā€œTheron.ā€ Ā But not Agent Shan.
The use of ā€œTheronā€ in the Pubside story is most eyebrow-raising. Ā
Marr calls people by their titles. Marr always keeps professional distance. Ā Underlings are uniformly referred to by their titles.Ā  Lana doesnā€™t like titles, so Marr doesnā€™t refer to her as Lord Beniko or Darth whatever; Ā itā€™s just Beniko.
Calling someone by their first name is highly irregular. Ā He does not refer to Satele as such until 6.2 (and that might be the Socratic Problem of Marr in the playerā€™s memory rather than the real Marr).Ā  Itā€™s always Grand Master or Grand Master Shan. In a unique instance in the game, Marr calls Theron by his given name when he finds the Imperial Guardā€™s buildings in ruins during the Pubside story: Ā ā€œBut given the destruction Theron describes, itā€™s mostly likely a distress call.ā€Ā  This is before the Pub operative annoys Marr by going to the Imperial Guard facility by themselves; itā€™s not said in anger or in irritation.Ā  Itā€™s said under ā€˜normalā€™ circumstances (if circumstances on Yavin are normal at all).Ā
But why?Ā  Why not ā€œAgent Shanā€?Ā  That would differentiate him from Grand Master Shan.Ā  Just referring to the pair as Grand Master and Agent would work too; how many Grand Masters and SIS Agents are running around on Yavin 4?Ā  Why is Marr avoiding attention to the manā€™s last name?
And why doesnā€™t Marr hop on this and use it to the Empireā€™s advantage?
Pragmatism and Prioritization
Marr is not a Jedi.Ā  Marr doesnā€™t do things for the greater good.Ā  He does things for the Sith Empire and for the people of the Sith Empire.Ā  Offing Theron Shan?Ā  Definitely on the agenda.Ā  So is killing Satele, eventually.
But not now.Ā  Not on Yavin 4.
Marr is probably the person closest to knowing what Revan is going to try to do in order to make the Emperor take physical form again so he can kill him.Ā  Itā€™s going to involve a lot of dead people.Ā  That can easily happen; up until this tiny fragile cease fire between Marr and Satele, the Empire and the Republic have been engaged in a hot war. When they first make camp on Yavin, there is a real possibility theyā€™ll frag each other regularly.Ā  This is why players have to do daily quests, in theory -- to build good will between the factions.Ā
My partner is a military nerd and a Star Wars nerd.Ā  He watched both version of the Battle of Rishi.Ā  His conclusion:Ā  based on the ships we see, Marr had more than twice the number of troops that Satele did (I put the numbers in my Yavin 4 fic).Ā  The Imperial troops, at Marrā€™s word, probably could wipe out the Republic forces on Yavin 4, pack up, and head back to Dromund Kaas in time for tea.
But they wonā€™t.Ā  Marr wouldnā€™t permit it.
He knows how dangerous the Emperor is, and if he does let his troops kill the Pubs, they feed him. There also appears to be some sort of weird mystical thing going on with Revanā€™s bloodline.Ā  Revan knew highly personal information about Theron (and Theron says so when the player opens the temple later on); somehow, Theron was able to use that connection to get Revan to give up Yavin 4 and secure an invite there at the end of the Rishi op.
Marr knows about this.Ā  Marr doesnā€™t know what Revan would do if Marr did kill Theron or Satele, plus thereā€™s the more predictable possibility that the Republic would respond to the death of Satele Shan thanks to the Jedi feeling it through the Force.Ā  Chancellor Saresh would not let that opportunity pass by, even if it did feed the Emperor; we saw that at Ziost.Ā
Grand Master Shan is a public figure.Ā  Her name and her power is obvious to everyone in the Yavin camp.Ā  Theron, however, is everything his mother is not.Ā  He is a spy.Ā  His face is not known to the general public.Ā  His work is secret, his exact abilities unknown.
Sure, the last name is common enough....
But Theron and Satele have never worked together before.Ā  Theyā€™ve never operated in such close proximity before.Ā  Yavin 4 would be the first time all the pieces could fall into place to someone observant.Ā  Marr is many things, but one of the things he really gets annoyed about in regard to the Sith is their arrogance.Ā  They get such fat heads that they canā€™t see obvious danger or they overlook aliens and non-Force Sensitives to their own detriment.Ā
Marr isnā€™t arrogant.
He doesnā€™t think heā€™s the only one who can see a family similarity or sense some connection between them.Ā  Saying someoneā€™s name is a powerful thing; we get upset when someone screws up our name.Ā  Itā€™s how our attention is attracted.Ā  Shared last names of interesting people attract attention.Ā  Attention leads to distraction away from the primary goal of stopping Revan and the Emperor.
Thatā€™s something Marr doesnā€™t want to deal with right now.Ā  Revan and Emperor now.Ā  The Shans later.Ā  He avoids referring to Theron as ā€œShanā€ so as to reduce any chance that some young Sith will attempt to make their bones killing Theron, since that would spell doom for the Empire, whether through Revanā€™s anger or the Republicā€™s revenge.Ā  It would also help empower the Sith Emperor to retake physical form, which is the last thing Marr wants him to do.Ā
Exposing the Grand Master as having a secret son would remove an ally from the field for Marr; Marr doesnā€™t want to destroy his assets before heā€™s used them to their full ability.Ā  Thereā€™s no point in burning Satele Shan on Yavin 4 before Revan is dealt with.Ā
...And Marr respects her.Ā  Itā€™s a cheap way to win against a rival he knows to be his equal.
Marr wants to end Revan and the Emperor now, in that order, to defend the people of the Empire.Ā  Heā€™ll worry about the Shans later.Ā  Marr will let Theronā€™s last name be overlooked and unmentioned, if only because it makes his job as Defender of the Empire less complicated for a few months.
**
Thanks again to @swtorpadawanā€‹ and also @inyriā€‹ @shabre-legacyā€‹ @theniveanlegacyā€‹ for discussing the original post about Satele and Theron and making me think about this. Ā
Headcanon Postface:
This last bit is purely my headcanon ideas about Marr, so you can leave here if you so desire. Iā€™m placing them here rather than making a separate post and having to link back to this one.Ā
As Iā€™ve described previously, we have the finished product of Darth Marr, with none of the personal insight that was provided for Satele Shan.Ā  Whoā€™s under the mask?Ā  Nobody knows, really.Ā  His first comic book adventure takes place in 3678, when heā€™s about 24 years old.Ā  Thereā€™s nothing about his life beforehand that would let the player wonder how his past life affected his current decisions.Ā  Marr ultimately would do the best he could for the Empire, regardless, but knowing if he ever hesitated, ever had second thought, had a regret -- that would make him mortal.Ā
And Marr is an icon, not a man, in the grander SWTOR universe, per the writers. Thatā€™s the point driven home to the player.Ā  So that leaves it to fan fic to take off the mask or not.Ā
In ā€œThe Planter of Trees and Other Tales from Yavin 4,ā€ Marr comes to this conclusion about the Shansā€™ relationship after observing two Shan chins.Ā  He then alludes to understanding Sateleā€™s decision to conceal Theronā€™s existence.
After Marr had gained his seat on the Dark Council (late 3680s, early 3670s), a lot of Sith families wanted him to add to their prestige. The man needed a legacy; he needed heirs.Ā  Marr had already set himself on his path, however; he understood that it was better to be an icon.Ā  If Marr was a normal man, he would be weakened by family connections, love, protectiveness, concern for his personal future.Ā  Instead, Marrā€™s devotion to the Empire was unmatched and pure.Ā  In the publicā€™s eye, he was the great defender. He was the perfect Sith.
Marr never did have a public wife or a political marriage. His private life -- better secured than Imperial state secrets -- produced a Ā daughter that did not inherit her talents from her Force-Using parent.Ā  Marr had been relieved that his daughter was not like him.Ā  It meant she would never be pressured to come into public life. It meant she was free of the burden of his legacy.Ā
Lately, Iā€™ve considered that, regardless of having access to the Force or not, a child of Marr was always in danger of becoming a pawn.Ā  She was something Marrā€™s enemies could use against him, if they ever found out about her; being Force-Null simply meant that others could not detect her as easily. That may have also have been a concern of Satele in regard to Theron, especially as she rose through the ranks of the Jedi Order.Ā  As soon as Marr could let his daughter fly away from Dromund Kaas, he did.Ā  She was free.Ā
She died shortly before the Sack of Coruscant.Ā  Marr did not go to her. The Empire had to matter more.Ā  That doesnā€™t mean he didnā€™t love her.Ā  He just never could prioritize her over the Empire.Ā
In my fic universe, Marr understands Sateleā€™s choices.Ā  He can keep his mouth shut.Ā  For now.Ā
Theron is far more dangerous to the rival faction than Marrā€™s daughter ever was, however; he is an active player in the war, while she... just got caught in the middle, in the end....
Revan and Emperor now.Ā  Shans later.

Detroit Become Human AU where:
-> Tommy is an up-and-coming livestreamer of the retro game Minecraft- forming part of a fledgling community of all-human players of the game. His growth is slow but steady and he has a future in a genre that had fallen out of fashion with the rise of the newest and more immersive VR games on the market. People love to see an actual human that could make mistakes and win against another fellow human fairly. The nostalgia it brought to some people is also undeniably at play.
It's worth noting that Tommy is a very lonely kid, with a non-existent social life since he and his family had to move to America after his father struck a lucrative business deal with his brilliant protege.
-> Wilbur, Tommy's older brother and only guardian after their father, Phil, dedicated his life to the creation of androids with his young but brilliant pupil Elijah Kamski, is a simple busker. It's hard to find a job at 24 with no previous experience or further education, he had to take care of Tommy, after all. True, their economic troubles never ended, and he could barely provide for Tommy, but at least they had each other, even if Wilbur was off to the streets of Detroit more often than not. He has no idea of his younger brother's blooming career in the gaming industry and is very worried about his future. The solution? A very suspicious android his best friend Schlatt offers for very cheap.
-> Phil Watson is a household name together with Elijah Kamski's, they created one of humanity's greatest tools, after all. Nothing suspicious here, they're definitely not hiding any potential deviancies from the code! In any case, his family never saw a dime of the frankly insane amount of money piling up in his bank account. He has an old phone he carries in his pocket every day with Wilbur's phone number, but he never dares to call it despite RN800, his assistant's, insistence that he was only making his own life harder. He is going to dial that phone number someday. Surely.
-> TU880 is an android from an old companion/educational line, discontinued after a few notable bugs and glitches in their core programming. Nothing serious, or life-threatening, but many customers have complained about disturbing behavior that falls straight into the uncanny valley- he's too human. Schlatt, his previous owner, refuses to disclose where he got TU880 from, nor does he have any legal documentation to prove he is his owner. Wilbur, desperate to find a solution for Tommy's perceived loneliness pays the fifty bucks his old pal asks for the android without asking any questions. It's weird for an adult to go around with a teen model created to counsel adolescents and help them with their homework. TU880 had problems with reading his grocery list, anyway.
-> Tommy is a bit weirded out, he thrives in an internet community which openly despises anything android, but his good friend Technoblade has plenty of useful advice, from maitenance to behavior. TU880 is odd, which he discards as kinks and bugs of the older models, but they get along nicely once TU880's programming kicks in. He likes to help Tommy edit his videos and speak about the problems of adolescence, he is oddly fond of bees or anything small and defenceless and likes to tell his 'dreams' of scientists in labcoats and other kids like him stuck in experiments. Tommy listens with half an ear, TU880 is his friend, after all. He thinks nothing of it.
-> It all becomes a bit too much when TU880 accidentally appears on camera during one of Tommy's streams. People assume he's Tommy's brother, and insist on getting an introduction. TU880 is ecstatic, but from what Tommy's told him, revealing his artificial status might harm his friend's career so he greets the chat as Toby, Tommy's older brother. The community goes wild and Tommy has to pretend that TU880 is his brother (which isn't that terrible per-se) and not the house assistant who has a complete psychological profile of him.
-> TU880 begins to feel strange, both regarding Tommy and his own place in the household. Calling Tommy hus brother is easy as calculus and makes his thirium pump skip a few beats, but he's not sure if he should be getting this attached. He's sure he is malfunctioning in some way, but Schlatt always assured him that he is fine. He thinks nothing of it and instead continues to watch over Tommy.
-> Minecraft is fun, and he eventually gets his own account on Wilbur's old (read: ancient) laptop despite possessing an internal processor powerful enough to play the game at its maximum capacity in his mind, and probably in a 3D holoprojector. At this point, he's in too deep and the friends he's making would certainly ask questions if he were to disappear. He has the opportunity to talk about anything at all to his growing audience, and the community is very welcoming in general once one integrates into their culture. He still doesn't feel it's fair to participate in the tournaments and all the other official competitions. People find it odd, but they assume he's not very good at PVP so no one tends to comment on it for now. It's okay though, he and his new friend Ranboo act as commentators during the events and everyone thinks they're pretty funny.
-> Ranboo is fun to be around. He just gets TU880- or as the internet knows him as, Tubbo. They click easily, sometimes the other boy seems just as confused about other people's reactions and behavior as Tubbo is (despite his in-depth knowledge of psychology. He's not quite connected to Cyberlife's database anymore and his learning algorithm is outdated at best.) and they like to spend their afternoons with Tommy, watching movies. The game overtakes their lives and they spend a lot of time playing privately with the best strategies Tubbo's advanced algorithms and Ranboo's sheer brilliancy can create. That's how they meet their friend Fundy, who is more than happy to keep their Technical Minecraft server a secret, as long as he gets to do his own thing with coding and they test it.
-> Tommy is just happy that he can use the cool farms for his own grinding.
-> Technoblade is Tommy's mysterious internet friend and fellow growing streamer. Everyone is sure that he's an android infiltrating the budding community, but after several years of isolated incidents, investigations, and online scandals no one was able to prove anything. Technoblade just never dies. (Tommy is 50% sure his friend is really an android, the older man simply refuses to comment). It is possible to spend months farming digital potatoes, people are just mean and want drama. Technoblade is just vibing. Incidentally, he's also the first one to figure out that Ranboo and Tubbo are androids. He is also the first one to figure out they're deviants. He doesn't mention it until much later though.
-> Jack and Niki Manifold have successfully founded their own mechanic business for android repairs. Cyberlife mumbled and grumbled at the siblings' repair shop, but in the end it was good for PR so they let them be. Tommy and Wilbur become their friends as TU880's frequent malfunctions inevitably bring the pair to the cheapest android repair service in the city. TU880 can't complain, Niki is sweet to him and understands what is wrong with him just by his description, since his diagnostics aren't working entirely and each an every single one of Jack's repairs last loner than every other mechanic he's been to.
-> Gradually, Tommy's fame becomes apparent, and Wilbur has the time to actually rest and spend time with his brother. He's just happy that they can be together. A weight is lifted off his shoulders and for the first time ever he feels like his little family has a future. Not even once does it pass through his mind that TU880 isn't acting like a typical android- he avoided the things on principle. Once, TU880 calls him his brother and he cries.
-> Sam is Cyberlife's very own private investigator. He is in charge of researching and turning in possible deviants that might help the company with developing a solution for the rising problem. In particular, he's been after the trail of a specific line of androids, the first one released by Kamski and Watson dubbed as TU. According to his investigations the line might have contained the code responsible for deviancy. Further research indicated that Kamski's code was based on a group project from the Dutch university for cibernetics.
-> Fundy is just a 21 y/o with a Twitch account and a passing interest in coding. Nothing serious, nothing suspicious. He absolutely wasn't part of the early AI coding trials that Kamski would later on use as the basis for his own code. If someone asks, he has no idea what ra9 means. He is almost sure that his friends are androids, the thought makes him very happy.
-> Puffy is Phil's new psychologist. Need I say more? Eventual Hurt/comfort baby!!!

[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise 29. Prowl, in profile, looks to the right. Prowl:Ā ā€œI lost my best friend, Prime. Megatron stood at his side and only one of them walked away.ā€ End ID.]
Iā€™ve never stopped thinking about this line, so!Ā What the fuck is up with Prowl and Bumblebeeā€™s relationship?Ā (Spoiler alert: I do not think Bee is another ex šŸ˜”)
They first met millions of years ago when Bumblebee went to Orion Pax for help regarding horrible dream heā€™d been having, and from there remained in each otherā€™s orbits, though not really friends.
Tumblr media
[ID: From Robots in Disguise #32. Prowl and Bumblebee stand with their backs to the reader, watching Metroplex lift off in city form while a battle rages in the sky around him. Bumblebee: ā€œNobody said warā€™s logical, bud.ā€ Prowl: ā€œThatā€™s my point. Weā€™re going to do stupid things until we die.ā€ Bumblebee: ā€œPrimus, Prowl. Lighten up. Weā€™re not like the Decepticons!ā€ End ID.]
During the war, they got along fine, but in the one snapshot we see thereā€™s not a lot of friendliness between them: Prowl is talking about the futility of their war and Bumblebee happens to be someone nearby. Thereā€™s a familiarity to the way they talk to each other (I doubt many people would bother or could get away with calling Prowl ā€œbudā€), but itā€™s more like coworkers who have been stepping on each otherā€™s toes for a long time than real friends. The conversation begins and ends with Prowlā€™s internal monologue, while Bumblebeeā€™s perspective is just a device used to draw out more of Prowlā€™s thoughts. Little is shown of their relationship because at this point, it just isnā€™t there.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from The Transformers #21. Optimus stands with his back to the reader in the foreground, with Bumblebee and Prowl in the Background. Prowlā€™s caption: ā€œThatā€™s when Prime filled in the ā€˜Bee. He took it better than I expected. Smart questions. No whining. Focused the anger. Heā€™s going to be a great leader one day. If he gets the chance.ā€ End ID.]
(ā€theĀ ā€˜Beeā€ lol Costaā€™s Prowl is a specimen) Half a million years later, theyā€™re on Earth, Bumblebee has been elected and then demoted, and Optimus is leaving with most of the Autobots while assigning them to investigate the illegal weapons trade. Prowl has thoughts on Bumblebeeā€™s leadership, which will be the ongoing theme of their relationship for the rest of the series. In typical Prowl fashion, he will never speak these particular thoughts aloud. (continues under the cut!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshots from Spotlight: Bumblebee. Panel 1: Bumblebee points offpanel with his cane and at himself with his thumb. Bumblebee: ā€œNo, wait, hang on, Prowlā€”Iā€™m in charge here.ā€ Panel 2: Prowl points a stern finger at Bumblebee, offpanel. Prowl: ā€œWhat? Come on. This isnā€™t about being in charge, itā€™s about being right.ā€ Panel 3: Prowl, flanked by two other Autobots, walks away from Bumblebee. Prowl: ā€œā€™Iā€™m in charge.ā€™ Optimus Prime would never put up with that kind of procedural nonsense.ā€ End ID.]
Spotlight: Bumblebee is basically a story about Bumblebee trying to impress Prowl. It opens by showing us how little respect Prowl holds for Bumblebee, ignoring his orders and taking bots he had already assigned to different tasks. We already know that Prowl is no Optimus fan, making the dig at Bumblebee extra cutting. It also doesnā€™t hurt that Bumblebeeā€™s whole story so far has been about trying to live up to Optimus, Prowlā€™s words coming as long-anticipated confirmation that he has failed to do so.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Spotlight: Bumblebee. Prowl smiles.Ā ā€œMeans the little guyā€™s got more spark than I gave him credit for, these last couple million years. Taking down five bad guys on his ownā€” and blaming himself for not stopping a hundred more? And then coming home and taking control?ā€ End ID.]
ā€œThatā€™s what Prime would do.ā€
Recklessly endangering himself for the sake of taking down a fewĀ ā€œbad guysā€? Yeah, that actually sounds exactly like Optimus.
Bumblebee proves himself taking command and earns a little respect from Prowl, even finding the confidence to bite back for Prowlā€™sĀ ā€œprocedural nonsenseā€ comment. It marks a big shift in their relationship, and by the time theyā€™re back on Cybertron in time for Death of Optimus Prime, theyā€™re working together by choice rather than decree. If weā€™re looking for a point where they become friends, I think this is it, a whole three years before the ā€œbest friendā€ panel above. All it took was aĀ ā€œcouple million yearsā€ of just tolerating each other.
And this takes us into Phase 2!
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #1. Bumblebee waves a cellphone-like device in Prowlā€™s face. Prowl: ā€œTheyā€™re not my friends.ā€ Bumblebee: ā€œWhatever they areā€”you keep them in line or I will. You understand?ā€ End ID.]
And also into an ongoing conversation about friendship!Ā
The pair is back on Cybertron following the events of Death of Optimus PrimeĀ and trying to figure out how to bring order to their home, and immediately disagree about the best way to do that. Bumblebee refers to the newly deputized Decepticon enforcers as Prowlā€™s ā€œfriends,ā€ using the word to highlight the unprofessional, independent nature of what is essentially Prowlā€™s personal anti-neutral militia.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #1. Bumblebee: ā€œRodimus and his crew died. They were our friendsā€”we canā€™tā€”canā€™t not eulogize them.ā€ Prowl: ā€œThey were my comradesā€”dammit, my friends, too.ā€ End ID.]
This leads into a conversation about the recently-departed Lost Light, for which Bumblebee thinks a memorial should be held. This time, when the word ā€œfriendā€ is used, itā€™s more sincere. Bumblebee also doesnā€™t sayĀ ā€œmyĀ friendsā€ā€”he extends an invitation that Prowl accepts, albeit clumsily.
Does he mean it, though? Prowl is not so socially bankrupt to not understand how friendships are supposed to look. Even if we dismiss his attitude to theĀ Lost LightĀ as general Prowlishness, this scene is followed by a conversation with Arcee in which he says he doesnā€™t trustĀ anyone, which is a pretty major hurtle to get over. Itā€™s not a stretch to assume Prowl is lying.
He never makes a move like that without a purpose, though. By referring to the Lost LightĀ crew as his friends, he gets Bumblebee to relax and see things from his own perspective, giving him an opportunity to talk about the more pressing security issues they are facing. This, in fact, is Prowlā€™s go-to strategy: identify the person in power and get close to them, thereby giving him the ability to watch over how that power is wielded.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #1. Prowl speaks to Bumblebee over his shoulder. Prowl: ā€œLook. every day, I watch the sun go down and wonder if we can make it another night without them. If I even want to.ā€ Bumblebee: ā€œHuh. I mean, yeah. Me, too.ā€ Prowl: ā€œIā€™m not emotionless, Bee. I care about Rodimus and Magnus and the rest as much as you do. But look at the situation logically.ā€ End ID.]
That said, I donā€™t think Prowl is lying here. Despite how warped his worldview becomes, I do believe that at his core, Prowl wants what is best for Cybertronians (well, Autobots). Many of his darker plans were created with the intention to keep people alive, so regardless of his personal feelings to them, he is notĀ ā€œemotionlessā€ and does feel something over their deaths.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: First screenshot from Robots in Disguise #2. Bumblebee smirks at Prowl, holding up his electrocuting cane. Bumblebee: ā€œHehā€”same old Prowl. Wheeljack whipped it up the other day.ā€ Prowl: Iā€™ve got to have a talk with Wheeljack.ā€ Second and third screenshots from Robots in Disguise #3. Panel 1: Bumblebee frowns at Prowl. ā€œEnough! Prowlā€”shut up. Metalhawk has a point.ā€ Panel 2: Prowl looks furious. Bumblebee is holding him back from lunging at someone off-panel. Prowl: ā€œBad moveā€¦ā€ Bumblebee: ā€œDown, Prowl.ā€ End ID.]
I donā€™t have much to say about these scenes, except that I like them as an illustration of their dynamic in this part of the story. Cold, confrontational, and yet with a degree of familiarity I wouldā€™ve thought more fitting to a much older connection. I really canā€™t imagine the Prowl from half a million years ago, talking at Bumblebee about the folly of their commander, allowing himself to be held back and calmly talked down. Through their work together, somethingĀ is developing that we might almost mistake for genuine friendship.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #4. Arcee: ā€œCome on. I know you didnā€™t destroy it. Youā€™re not that hard. But you are cold and calculating. Enough that even Bumblebeeā€”even your only friendā€”thinks you mightā€™ve.ā€ Arcee: ā€œBee wonā€™t say it. But you know thatā€™s what heā€™s thinking.ā€ Prowl: ā€œIt doesnā€™t bother me. Bee doubts everything. Even himself.ā€ End ID.]
ā€œEven Beeā€”even your only friendā€”thinks you mightā€™ve.ā€
ā€œBee doubts everything. Even himself.ā€
The same phrase is used twice in the conversation to distinguish Bumblebee as an outlier (not the superpower kind, though maybe his ability to tolerate the Worst People should be considered). For Arcee, itā€™s in his proximity to Prowl. Prowlā€™s use of the phrase is a little more ambiguous, though. Is he saying that one should have faith in oneself if nothing else? It definitely fits in his worldview. Or is he saying Bumblebee is worthy of being trusted, believed in?
If so, what does that mean? Bumblebee would take Prowlā€™s endorsement as faith in his abilities as a leader, but we already know Prowl doesnā€™t view leadership that way. He needs to get an Autobot elected, and Bumblebee specifically, because he needs someone in power he can get close to and control. Bumblebeeā€™s leadership, though perhaps not Bumblebee himself, offers Cybertron a path towards peace. So, actually, Arcee and Prowl mean the same thing: Bumblebee is special because heā€™s the person Prowl is closest to.
This is also the first indication we get that Bumblebee does not trust Prowl so fully as Prowl wants. As sneaky as Prowl is, itā€™s easy to forget sometimes that Bumblebee is his own agent with his own ability to measure the facts. He wantsĀ to trust Prowl, but that doesnā€™t blind him to Prowlā€™s reputation.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #5. Ironhide and Prowl cluster around Bumblebee, who looks contemplative. Prowl: ā€œThink about what theyā€™re say about you in the future, Bee! The Autobot that let the Decepticons go free?!ā€ Ironhide: ā€œHeā€™s rightā€”a little. Think about what the future can be. Cybertronā€™s our world, and tomorrowā€™s our dayā€¦ā€ End ID.]
We get to see more of Bumblebee soon after, since Prowl gets cerebroshelled. Bomb-Prowl is much more ruthless than the genuine article, expressing little care for the lives of anyĀ Cybertronians, but nobody notices it around Prowlā€™s standard prickly persona. Bumblebee experiences growing unease with Bomb-Prowlā€™s methods, though interestingly does not dismiss him for it. Consider the above scene: a fight has just broken out. To resolve it, Ironhide, Starscream, and Ironhide recommend removing the Decepticonsā€™ ID chips. Prowl is the sole voice of dissent, and Bumblebee chooses to ignore him while also maintaining their partnership.
Bumblebee can think for himself and say no to Prowl. This situation is not just Prowl manipulating and taking advantage of Bumblebee: the latter is fully capable of making his own decisions.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #11. Bumblebee stands on the left and Prowl on the right. Bumblebee: ā€œAm I wearing blinders because youā€™re my friend? Are you even my friend?ā€ End ID.]
When Omega Supreme is attacked, Bomb-Prowl accuses the Decepticons, opening himself up for scrutiny: Metalhawk accuses him of killing Ratbat. Bumblebee starts to express his doubts openly and he questions not only Prowlā€™s innocence, but their relationship altogether. (Also, though literally Bumblebee is asking, ā€œCan I consider you, Prowl, a friend?ā€ his question can also be read as, ā€œAre you who you say you are?ā€)
Bumblebeeā€™s question doesnā€™t imply he trusts Prowl. He doesnā€™t even trust himself: heā€™s wondering if their friendship has installed in him an implicit bias in Prowlā€™s favor. There is a possibility his feelings regarding Prowl are strong enough to warp his perception of reality, and heā€™s worried that he canā€™t see what's obvious to everyone else. In contrast to previous leaders Prowl has watched over, Bumblebee is aware of his ability and willingness to manipulate those around him. Heā€™s not under any illusion that Prowl is honest with him all the time, but he also isnā€™t confident enough in himself to remove Prowlā€™s influence.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #11. Bumblebee: ā€œThen I want to get back to finding Ironhide and the others, because heā€™s my friend and friends look out for each other.ā€ End ID.]
There is also the matter that he does consider Prowl a friend. Not a good friend (as in caring, respectful, thoughtful), but nevertheless one he does not want to lose.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #14. Panel 1: Bumblebee shoves Metalhawk aside and reaches for Prowl, who is collapsing to the floor. Bumblebee: ā€œProwlā€”Iā€”ā€ Panel 2: Prowl lies on the floor. Prowl: ā€œBeeā€¦ it wasnā€™tā€¦ wasnā€™t meā€¦ How could you notā€¦ see that?ā€ End ID.]
I think the feeling is mutual. Prowlā€™s not angry at Bumblebee for falling for the Decepticonsā€™ trap.
Heā€™s hurt that his friend didnā€™t notice he was gone.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #16. Ironhide helps Prowl up. Prowl: ā€œā€¦Iā€™m me.ā€ Ironhide: ā€œGot too much of an ego ta be anybody else.ā€ Prowl: ā€œIā€”I needed to hearā€”ā€ Bumblebee (off-panel): ā€œLater, Prowlā€¦ā€ End ID.]
Their relationship starts to go downhill from here. After breaking free from Devastator, Prowl actually tries to talk about his feelings, and Bumblebee dismisses him. To be fair, there are other things going on that need their attention, but Prowl is never given an opportunity to process what he has been through. Bumblebee, who excels at talking to people and helping them through their problems, never offers a space for Prowl to open up about his experience, and itā€™s the internalization of his trauma that leads to Prowlā€™s emotional degeneration through the rest of the series.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #18. Panel 1: Bumblebee hunches over his cane, struggling to stand. Bumblebee: ā€œItā€™s *kaff*ā€¦ Well, I donā€™t want to know *kaff kaff* whatā€™s going on in his mind, butā€¦ Prowl didnā€™t do any of the *koff* terrible stuff.ā€ Panel 2: Bumblebee stands in front of Prowl, facing the reader. Bumblebee: ā€œHe was *kaff* being controlled by Bombshell. I mean obviously he didnā€™t *koff* kill you guysā€”he didnā€™t blow up the Decepticon pen. He *kaff kaff* wasnā€™t running a secret war. He didnā€™t *koff* have Ratbat eliminated.ā€ End ID.]
I donā€™t think Bumblebee is being intentionally malicious, though. Consider all the times Prowl has had to say outright that he feels things and has emotions: I think itā€™s more accurate to say Bumblebee didnā€™t believe him. The doubts he felt about Prowl were never with regard to his intentions, but rather the way he interacted with and understood the world around him. Bumblebee, going by the reputation Prowl made for himself, doesnā€™t believe Prowl processes events the same way he does, and as a result falsely assume that his mind control and forced combination will have no greater impact on Prowl.
And then even Bumblebeeā€™s faith in Prowlā€™s intentions is shaken when Arcee reveals he did call for Ratbatā€™s assassination. Bumblebee is so betrayed he passes out.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from Robots in Disguise #18. Panel 1: Ironhide grins to the side while Bumblebee holds a fist to his mouth, coughing. Ironhide: ā€œAw. Anā€™ everything was goinā€™ so wellā€¦ā€ Bumblebee: ā€œProwl. Whyā€”whatā€”*kof kofff* *koff kaf*ā€ Panel 2: Bumblebeeā€™s hand reaches up as he collapses. Bumblebee: ā€œ*kaf kaf* Nnngggghā€¦ā€ End ID.]
The next time they interact is in Dark Cybertron. Getting close to the end, here!

All your attitude ever got us wasā€¦ was the Constructicons.ā€ Soundwave: ā€œThe Constructicons stand with you?ā€ Bumblebee: ā€œLong story, Soundwave. And this isnā€™t a team up. We just happen to have the same objective.ā€ Panel 3: Prowl points at Soundwave. ā€œThen do something! Donā€™t just let thisā€”thisā€”Decepticon control you!ā€ End ID. Third screenshot from Robots in Disguise #23. Prowl holds up a struggling Arcee while yelling at Bumblebee. Prowl: ā€œYou let this happen, Bee! We attack now!ā€ Bumblebee: ā€œProwl, get your priorities in orderā€”ā€ End ID.]
Evidence of Prowlā€™s trauma starts to become more visible. The comradery they shared before is gone; Prowlā€™s methodical approach to problems is gone. Instead, he is scared and impulsive, and he takes out his new anxieties on his ā€œonly friendā€ because Bee is the one thing heā€™s supposed to be able to control.

But he canā€™t. Bumblebee has gotten used to ignoring Prowl or refuting him. Add to that Prowlā€™s heightened emotional state, and Bumblebee responds to his criticism with open aggression. Stuck in crisis mode like they are, there is no way for them to reset and calm down until the Titan is finally taken down and everything comes to a standstill for a moment.

I was hoping your friends would could out of hiding.ā€ Prowl: ā€œThey werenā€™tā€”I mean, theyā€™re notā€”They just shared my memories. The Decepticons exploited myā€”myā€”my head!ā€ End ID.]
And with this, we cycle back to their first conversation in Robots in Disguise. Before, Bumblebee used the word ā€œfriendsā€ to criticize Prowlā€™s Decepticon enforcers and the freedom they were granted to terrorize the neutrals. Prowl, known to circumvent the chain of command, decided to forgo it almost entirely in that case, creating a violent, lawless group that did not fit into the military structure the Autobots still relied on.
Now, he uses ā€œfriendā€ to refer to the enthusiasm the Constructicons have for Prowl. Prowlā€™s deceit has been brought into the open, legitimizing Bumblebeeā€™s fears and forcing him to question all over again his role as a leader. The doubts he had in himself and Prowl are tied together, so that even with the knowledge that everything that happened to Prowl was out of his control, he still feels threatened by the Decepticon presence Prowl now carries with him.
And even though heā€™s met with this kind of hostility, Prowl still comes back to Bumblebee to continue work as his advisor. Heā€™s got a group of bots literally right thereĀ who trust him and support him without reservation, but he chooses Bumblebee because he still believes in their power to do right by Cybertron.
Tumblr media
[ID: Screenshot from More Than Meets the Eye #27. Prowl stands on the left, Bumblebee on the right. Prowl: ā€œBeeā€”we stopped his plan, but Shockwave is still out there.ā€ Bumblebee: I know, and youā€™re totally right, and anything less than a perfect attack plan and weā€™re sunkā€”so I need you to come up with one. In the meantimeā€”mingle. There has to be somebody you want to say ā€˜hiā€™ to.ā€ Prowl: ā€œActuallyā€¦ā€ End ID.]
This is the last time they talk to each other. Prowl reminds him of the impending danger, Bumblebee is grateful for his expertise, and then he encourages Prowl to go relax. Thereā€™s something to be said for the fact that upon leaving Bumblebeeā€™s side, Prowl immediately seeks out his ex, but I think itā€™s mainly just that heā€™s lonely rather than anything nefarious. Heā€™s lonely, and despite their distrust and criticism and generally poor treatment of each other, Bumblebee is someone who accepts his company, a rare thing thatā€™s heā€™s going to lose very soon.
When I first read the words ā€œbest friend,ā€ I assumed Prowl was lying. I also assumed, even if that was true, it would not hold in the reverse. I think Iā€™ve changed my mind on both counts. Prowl didnā€™t pursue Bumblebee with genuine intentions, but they both ended up getting something out of it. Itā€™s not a healthy relationship, but at a tumultuous time in their lives it might literally be the best they can do and in their own ways, they trust theyā€™re going to look out for each other.

How do you see The Captain's coming out, and growth in confidence and self acceptance thereafter taking place?
I like this question! ā€¦and Iā€™m probably going to elaborate on it a bit more than many people will want to read (I noticed back when I was regularly writing essay length posts that they did not get a lot of love) and itā€™s probably going to get even more ramble-y than usual (brain has not been braining as cooperatively as it should recently and the decision to drink half a bottle of wine right before answering this- sorry- probably does not help), but here we are. Ā
Ā About coming out scenarios, none of mine are particularly elaborate. While I do think he needs to come out for his story line to progress, I canā€™t imagine him making a big thing out of it (long or elaborate announcements, heart-to-hearts, emotional displays of bearing his authentic self or any of the like), either with the group, or person-by-person, for several reasons:
First off, that sort of a coming-out to-do is a more modern notion, and I doubt he was a particularly modern person even when he was alive, seventy-five years ago. His notions of privacy and propriety are probably much more conservative than ours, and I feel like that makes it unlikely that heā€™d go into any sort of detail, at least at early in this process, about his feelings/emotions or the specificities of his attractions. Weā€™re talking about a man who doesnā€™t even use his own name. Itā€™s difficult to picture him going into depth about his desires and love life.
Secondly, heā€™s a bit of a social coward. (Heā€™s not a physical coward, of course, he jumped on that bomb in the garden without hesitation, and acknowledged after the fact that he gotten caught up in the moment, and therefore hadnā€™t really thought about how a bomb couldnā€™t hurt him.) And I get it, Iā€™m a bit of a social coward, too, so no judgement. He probably faced a lot of ridicule in his life. Being a social coward is totally fair. But he doesnā€™t put himself into situations that might involve awkward interpersonal interactions if he can help it, and legs it whenever interactions heā€™s already in become to awkward for him. I feel like heā€™s probably quite desperate (although heā€™d never admit to it) to save face and protect what bits of his ego remain unscathed.
Think about it: he could have spoken to Fanny on his own about her nightly screaming disturbing him in s1e1, they have a clear association established at the outset of the show, they leave Heatherā€™s room together at the end of the very first scene, but he doesnā€™t do so until he has the weight of the whole group to back him up about the screaming at their meeting. He had to buck up his courage and give himself his little ā€˜over the top we goā€™ pep talk before going to speak to Alison in Gorilla War. Also, if there was actually something wrong with his soldiersā€™ horseplay after hours in Reddy Weddy- if it was breaking regulations or even his own orders for quiet hours- and he heard it, he could have gone down directly when he heard it, confronted whoever was involved and order them to stop or put them on report. But no, instead he addressed the entire group of soldiers in a sixteen point morning brief. He even dispatched Pat to confront Alison about the party in s2e2, instead doing it himselfā€¦ and spit out his apology/reconciliation with Pat at the end as fast as possible. And as for legging it when things get awkward, see his retreats following the group confronting him in Getting Out and after Alison telling him he wasnā€™t needed in the Grey Lady- and on a more figurative than literal level, but most relevantly, his quick turn from ā€˜Iā€™ll miss youā€™ to ā€˜weā€™ll miss youā€™ with Havers in Reddy Weddy.
This is not a man who wants to be in awkward or embarrassing situations. And I think that coming out, at least at first, will probably be a bit embarrassing for him- it was scandalous in his time, and I think it will take him longer to get over that feeling and come to terms with himself than it will to finally acknowledge that heā€™s gay. So I doubt heā€™d make more of it than he utterly feels he has to, at least at first. And of course, heā€™d have to be a bit afraid that people would judge him or stop associating with him over it, as sadly, in his own time many people would have done, and most of the ghosts are from even earlier times than he was. So that might add more hesitationā€¦
And thirdly, he doesnā€™t like and/or respect many of his house mates. The other twentieth century ghosts are the only ones he spends much time with. I doubt heā€™d go out of his way to communicate much of anything to the rest if it wasnā€™t ā€œmission relatedā€ much less discuss his sexuality with them. He mostly disregards Humphrey. See his, ā€œOh, itā€™s you.ā€ Mary obviously doesnā€™t like him and he only associates with her when it might be useful for his ā€˜missions.ā€™ He clearly doesnā€™t think much of Thomas and doesnā€™t really even bother including him in his plans. These arenā€™t people heā€™s going to have heart-to-hearts with.
With those constraints in place, hereā€™s a non-exhaustive list of possibilities by which I might see his coming out finally happening. Theyā€™re really just scenarios I made for myself on how I might see him coming out and I like to keep my options open (the first three are strategies he might go for, the last is an alternate scenario, presented in decreasing levels of directness on his part):
1) The ā€˜pull the bandage off quickly and hope it doesnā€™t sting too muchā€™ strategy.
The Captain waits for the end of one of their various group activities or meetings, where all announcements seem to be made, gets up, clears his throat, stammers a bit, announces it tersely, using the most proper popular word for homosexuality that existed in his time (think: ā€œHeh-hem. Er. Um. Well. It has recently come to my attention that I am- er- well- as it happens- gay. I, uh, thought it should be noted. That is all.ā€), and then beats a hasty retreat, so he doesnā€™t have to try to cope with the potentially negative aftermath. Of course, there isnā€™t a negative aftermath, because many of the ghosts already have guessed and the rest donā€™t really care. Someone, probably Pat, because he does the bulk of the emotional labor in the group, and more importantly, heā€™s Capā€™s closest friend, would have to go after him. He would of course be initially defensive, and Pat would have to sooth his feathers a bit- or maybe just spit it out over his defensiveness- that he guessed a long time ago and so had plenty of other people, and they were just waiting for him to be ready, and really, itā€™s fine, and no oneā€™s going to disown him for it. Ā
2) The ā€˜well maybe I should tell my friends with the hope they support meā€™ strategy.
He gets together with a small group, the people whose company he actually values, definitely Fanny and Pat, maybe Julian, probably Alison either at the same time or after he finishes with his ghosts pals, and says it in much the same way as the previous scenario, but waiting for their reactions rather than retreating straight away. Pat and Alison, I expect, would answer with something like ā€˜yeah, we figured that one out a long time ago, actually, and itā€™s completely fineā€™ and Julianā€™s reaction would probably be something like, ā€˜well, obviously.ā€™ Fannyā€™s had a lot of character growth since season one, when I expect her reaction would have been very shrill and judgmental, probably still would be a touch less warm and/or nonchalant, but I picture it as something like a sigh, followed by a pat on the arm and something like, ā€˜well, I still like you better than everyone else here, anyway.ā€™ Word would eventually trickle to everyone else by way of social osmosis. Or not. No one seems to care if Humphrey or the plague ghosts are well informed. Ā
3) The ā€˜Iā€™m not brave enough to actually go through the process of actually telling anyone anything about me so letā€™s just drop hints and hope everyone figures it out without making a big deal about itā€™ strategy. Ā
The indirect approach (Iā€™m rather fond of this one, but mostly because it was my own primary coming out approach)ā€¦ he first sends out feelers to certain people on the topic of homosexuality, probably Alison, since sheā€™s modern, hosted a lesbian wedding, and very much implied that sheā€™d be ready to keep scandalous secrets for him in Reddy Weddy, and Ā possibly maybe also Julian, as heā€™s the most sexually experienced/knowledgeable, and after Alison spent a while inundating him with ā€˜itā€™s okay to be gayā€™ messages (along with a sudden and entirely unexplained influx of LGBT media) as sheā€™s socially clever enough to see thatā€™s what heā€™s looking for and after Julian spent a while telling him probably far more than he ever actually wanted to know about the potentialities of gay sex, that might boost the Captainā€™s confidence enough to let him start dropping hints to people, instead of telling them outright (consciously commenting on the attractiveness of men they see rather than occasionally accidentally blurting it out- see ā€˜the handsome oneā€™- occasionally putting forth an opinion or stance on the LGBT world ā€˜it would have been nice if gay marriage was acceptable when I was alive,ā€™ maybe occasionally mentioning how certain men would make cute couple), expecting them to meet him in the middle and figure out the point on their ownā€¦ of course, many of them have already realized, so this isnā€™t a problem. Itā€™s entirely possible, though, that Mary (world view not terribly grounded in reality) and Kitty (lack of life experience and/or instruction about life, see the how are babies made subplot) never pick up the hints on their own and someone else eventually has to tell them.
4) The ā€˜someone puts him out of his miseryā€™ scenario.
Cap acknowledges to himself that heā€™s gay first and then, wishing to avoid embarrassment or lack of acceptance, obviously, awkwardly, painfully tries to disguise it and in doing so draws attention to it, until a third party decides to put him out of his misery and tell him that many of them figured it out ages ago and that everyone is fine with it. Maybe Pat. Maybe Alison. I kind of like the idea of it being Fanny (with her lovely character growth and her couple of suspicious glances his way in the Perfect Day), actually, by way of something like ā€˜You know, I was entirely prepared to continue on living with my husband, George, keeping his secrets, about the, uh, sort of person he was, and youā€™re at least one better than him, given that you at least never murdered me- or, for that matter, never married some poor woman you had no interest in to shield yourself from scrutinyā€¦ and so, what Iā€™m saying is, I wouldnā€™t turn my back on you for being the, uh, sort of person you are, either, and maybe things have progressed enough that you donā€™t actually have to keep secrets at all.ā€™ Cap would take all of this in with a mixture of mortification and relief. Iā€™m rather fond of this scenario, too. Ā
Ā As for the second bit of the question, once his sexuality is out there, though, and no one judges him or hates him for it- and some are quite supportive- I do see him becoming more self-accepting. If no oneā€™s judging him, does he need to judge himself so harshly? And also more confident. Because some of those things that heā€™s always felt different about and in the past has probably been ridiculed about in the past (even if heā€™s in denial about being gay, he and quite a few other people had to at the very least note that heā€™s not particularly interested in women), are, apparently just fine now. So heā€™s a bit more just fine now himself. And that weight of always trying to be someone else, someone whoā€™s just right, can lift and he can relax a bit more. And that would probably help him a lot, too. I see it as a slow sort of thawing process. No matter what way he comes out, I still see Alison as very helpfully providing a variety of LGBT media to help this process along. And maybe heā€™d eventually get to the point where he processed enough and warmed up enough to be able to talk more in depth, at least with his friends, about what it was like being him in repressed pre-war Britain, and what sort of men heā€™s attracted to (I enjoy the idea of him and Fanny- gradually overcoming her own repression- scoping out hot men together). Maybe heā€™ll even luck out one of his male housemates will decide (or has already decided) that bisexuality is a valid option and heā€™ll get a date (insert whichever ghost yā€™all ship him with here). I bet Alison would totally help him set up a nice date, too, with her convenient still-functional-in-the-mortal-realm hands. And it would be nice to maybe see him get a taste of actual happiness.Ā  Ā Ā

snake primary + slightly burnt snake secondary (some kind of built secondary model)
Hi hi hi!! Hope youā€™re well!! So tell me, is there a way to tell whether youā€™re a lion or a snake secondary beyond the actual ā€œtextbookā€ definitions? I think Iā€™m pretty burnt, and Iā€™m on my way to fixing that, but it would help to know where Iā€™m supposed to be heading lol
(Btw, Iā€™m a Sam coded Dean girl. I donā€™t think itā€™s relevant I just thought that system was both useful and hilarious and Iā€™m so glad you posted that)
I also really liked how that turned out.
Iā€™m pretty sure Iā€™m an improv secondary. I think Iā€™m bad at it, hence the burning, but itā€™s what comes naturally to me and what I would feel most proud of.
I end up planning for a bunch of things, and in some cases I donā€™t hate it.
Damning with faint praise.
Like if Iā€™m giving a presentation, I open a word document and write down what Iā€™m gonna say verbatim, even the language tics and pauses and hesitations and such, so itā€™s like Iā€™m actually living it. Then I repeat the whole thing multiple times, amending it whenever I change something, until I feel like Iā€™ve sort of gone through the experience already.
That isā€¦ the weirdest way of hacking an improvisational secondary. Because thatā€™s whatā€™s youā€™re doing. Improvisational secondaries need to be ā€œin it,ā€ so you get as close to that as possible in the prep work.
Then I scrap the whole thing and improvise when itā€™s actually happening ā€“ the result is often pretty different from the word doc
of course.
but Iā€™m a bit more in my element because Iā€™ve done it already and I know I can do it.
This is honestly a really good strategy to make yourself more comfortable with improvising? I can tell youā€™re unBurning, this feels very much likeā€¦ training wheels, to me. Heck, I think I would recommend your method to another burnt Improvisational secondary.
Iā€™m not sure, but I think that sort of thing is more built than improv?
Like, kind of? Iā€™m autism spectum, and when I was younger I built a Bird model to help me feel more confident accessing my Courtier Badger. Thatā€™s what this feels like.
But I definitely feel like itā€™s a model Iā€™ve developed to deal with social anxiety and my fear of failure lol. I didnā€™t do stuff like that before it got bad, and if I could deal with not doing it, I would.
I hear that.
In most other situations, though, I tend to jump right in and go with the flow. I really donā€™t think very far ahead. I guess I can if I try, when itā€™s just a matter of logic, but things like my life plans, my relationships, or even more short-term things like plans with friends or what Iā€™m gonna eat or how Iā€™m gonna deal with a task, I really canā€™t project into the future. I canā€™t really make decisions or see a situation clearly until Iā€™m in it. Then I tend to make decisions very quickly, kind of on instinct, or whatever feels right in the moment.
Youā€™re definitely an improvisational secondary.
(Actually maybe thatā€™s a primary thing? Iā€™m a snake primary, but I do have a very prominent lion model, and a bit of badger as well.)
Nah, thatā€™s definitely an Improvisational secondary thing. I am curious about your primary though, because you say you donā€™t have too much in the way of life plansā€¦ and *that* is more where a primary would come in. You feel like a safe Snake to me (that is, a Snake whose people are safe) so there is a little bit ofā€¦ what now? What is the Lion+Badger model you wear over the top interested in?
Point is, I prefer being spontaneous, even if itā€™s something important. Making plans and having to stick to them makes me feel trapped. Iā€™m not the most constant person, and I like that about me. I want to have room to grow and change, even for the smallest things.
Completely, entirely fair.
Anyway, I feel like Iā€™ve talked more about limitations and things I donā€™t want so far, but I guess thatā€™s a burnt thing.
I mean, sure youā€™re a little underconfident, but you seem pretty far along to me.
Iā€™ve seen you mention whatā€™s really useful in determining a secondary is what you actually enjoy, so here goes. I like being in the moment, and I like being able to come up with ideas and solutions on the fly, by taking in the situation and using it to my advantage.
Thatā€™s very Snake secondary sounding language.
I think thereā€™s a bit of a separation in my mind between ā€œpeople thingsā€ and ā€œbeing clever things.ā€
For ā€œbeing clever thingsā€ (likeā€¦ I donā€™t know, an escape room, a problem with an administration, a paper I have to write, video games, some kind of mysteryā€¦) I like to rely on being observant and quick-thinking, and if I can find loopholes or outsmart whoever Iā€™m facing to win in an unexpected way, thatā€™s even better (but really more for my ego than anything else, I guess finding the ā€œnormalā€ solution is okay, as long as you get there, itā€™s just less fun).
Hilarious. Yeah, you sound like a *confident* Snake secondary to me.
For ā€œpeople thingsā€ (drama with family or friends, or if someone is being an ass, or if someone comes to me for advice on interpersonal things), I prioritize being straightforward and honest. If I have time to plan or if Iā€™m giving advice, I might come up with something more sneaky and elaborate, but if Iā€™m in the moment, Iā€™m most likely to be really confrontational, stubborn and unyielding, even if it makes things more difficult for me.
Hmm. I am reading this as a Snake who likes being Neutral - especially those words ā€œstubbornā€ and ā€œunyielding.ā€ Thereā€™s a reason Neutral Snakes are called ā€œthe unmovable object.ā€
If I catch myself, I try to avoid it, but that just means staying silent and removing myself from the situation ā€“ I canā€™t bring myself to make compromises if it feels like Iā€™m betraying myself.
Okay, now thatā€™s sounding more Lion.
To be clear, thatā€™s almost exclusively with people Iā€™m close to, or who are supposed to ā€œknow meā€.
Oh okay. This is your secondary interacting with your primary. Actively lying to and misrepresenting yourself to Your People would be immoral to a Snake Primary.
With friends who arenā€™t in my inner circle, or acquaintances, or complete strangers, or authority figures, I might get upset internally if Iā€™m perceiving a slight or injustice, but I can keep up the mask I need no problem. That being said, I donā€™t have a lot of patience for drama, so if whatever it is canā€™t be quickly resolved with a convenient lie or saying what works for me in a way they wonā€™t mind hearing, I just stick to what Iā€™m actually thinking and/or my neutral state (Iā€™m not sure itā€™s accurate to use snake language here, but it feels like it and itā€™s convenient).
I think itā€™s highly appropriate and accurate. All that is reading very Snake.
Iā€™ve seen a bunch of people say lion and snake secondaries are sort of at odds with each other, but I donā€™t really get the contradiction between them yet (as in, I donā€™t see why people canā€™t be both those ā€œcontradictoryā€ things at the same time). I do mask a lot, and I enjoy it ā€“ I think itā€™s rewarding, and honestly it just makes sense ā€“ itā€™s what works best in that moment, and it feels natural to shift that way. I just donā€™t feel itā€™s a misrepresentation. The whole ā€œitā€™s not cheating, itā€™s being cleverā€ thing just feels a little too dishonest. Cheating is cheating, no need to be so smug about it. Itā€™s not wrong, though, at least not always. If itā€™s hurting someone who doesnā€™t deserve it, then itā€™s wrong (might still do it if the alternative is worse, but that doesnā€™t mean itā€™s suddenly an ethical choice to make, it just means Iā€™m okay with being immoral in that instance).
All that being said, I donā€™t think masking is being dishonest about yourself. I donā€™t think anything that comes out of my mind is ā€œnot meā€, it just doesnā€™t work that way. The personas I have with different groups or people in my life are all genuine, itā€™s just that different sides of me are brought up. And if Iā€™m acting in a way thatā€™s actually not genuine, that mask is still my creation ā€“ if someone else were to come up with a mask for that same situation, it would be different, because their mind works differently. Everything you do is a reflection of yourself, and even if you were to try your best to be honest all the time, youā€™d never be able to show your true and complete self to someone else. You canā€™t even see that yourself.
Oh man. This is why I love writing these, and this is what I mean about Lion and Snake being so incomprehensible to each other. Because Lions fundamentally do not think this way, every word here is dripping with Snake.
It might be helpful to think of Lions as static. Thatā€™s how Shakespeare (who definitely seems like a Snake secondaryā€¦) writes about them, and he sees them as sort of tragic. Lions really do have a ā€œcoreā€ persona that feels more true than all the others, and they really do exist in it as much as they possibly can. And feel good and moral about doing that.
And a maskā€™s point may be to deceive or to gain something, but being blunt and straightforward can be used in that way too.
You are literally thinking of ā€œcommon Lion secondary presentationā€ as another useful mask, and itā€™s so Snake, and so fantastic.
Iā€™m thinking this sounds more snake than anything else, so Iā€™ll focus on why I thought I might be a lion too now. I guess the reason Iā€™m on the fence is because these two are presented as ā€œeither you think the only way is through, or youā€™re looking for a way around itā€, and Iā€™m not comfortable saying I favor either.
That is *a* way to think about the two secondaries. But those are symptoms, not causes. The reason a Lion secondary feels that the only way out is though is because a Lion secondary must be themselves, or die.
My first thought was to say that I get more satisfaction from finding ways around a problem because it makes me feel cleverer and itā€™s more fun, but thatā€™s because Iā€™m zeroing in on certain types of situations (people giving me some intellectual challenge, debates, or video games). But there were also a lot of times where I stuck it out and kept going with pigheaded stubbornness, and got a lot more satisfaction out of that (physical challenges like obstacle courses, disagreements with my parents, winning over certain people).
Hereā€™s where I think the confusion is. Youā€™re a Snake secondary, and one of your masks looks very Lion. Note how you talk about using this ā€œpigheadednessā€ with certain people, who you know will respond well to it.
In fact, I remember my father telling me one day ā€œyeah, youā€™re never here to compromise, you just make decisions and inform us, and keep going while you wait for us to accept reality,ā€œ and I actually canā€™t describe how proud and smug I was about that. Kind of insufferable, but I just get so euphoric when people see right through me and show they get me, even if itā€™s about the more annoying or bad parts of me.
I think thatā€™s just a human thing. The mortifying ideal of being known is how you feel loved.
I remember a conversation I had with my ex after we broke up where she cut right through all my bullshit and discarded my whole mask to get right to my inner self and the core of certain issues, and even though I was still mad and upset, and kind of embarrassed that she could see me being vulnerable, I couldnā€™t help but be happy about it, because I felt known.
Yeah. <3
I donā€™t interact much with people outside of my inner circle, so I canā€™t tell if itā€™s entirely specific to them, but I really vibe with the ā€œhonesty is their strengthā€ part of being a lion. Thatā€™s why my people trust me and rely on me so much, because even though they know how sneaky I can get and how fun I think tricking people is, they also know I default to telling the truth and saying whatā€™s on my mind more often than not, because theyā€™re my people.
I think that, as a Snake primary who mostly only interacts with Your People, youā€™re in a kind of unusual position. I know that the presentation of a Snake who feels safe can be blunter, can be more Lion-y. My experience with Snakes isā€¦ yeah, sometimes I know Iā€™m being manipulated, or having my buttons pushed in a specific way. But Iā€™m fine with it, because Iā€™m one of their people, and I know they would never hurt me. Thatā€™s where the certainty is coming from.
Then again, I also have a ā€œitā€™s not lying unless theyā€™re entitled to the truthā€ attitude with basically everyone else. I just donā€™t think some people deserve to know me that way.
snaaaake
(lions are going to take the truth and PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE with it, and if you canā€™t deal thatā€™s YOUR PROBLEM)
And ā€œideallyā€, as in, if I didnā€™t have anxiety and a bunch of other issues, I still donā€™t think Iā€™d just be neutral all the time. Sounds boring. And inconvenient.
Snake secondaries are great.
Ahhh, should I even post this? I feel like my whole thought process before this moment of introspection was ā€œso I really vibe with snake, but Iā€™m also hotheaded and a bit of a bitch, so I MUST be a lion, rightā€ lmao. I just think Iā€™m a straight up double snake at this point.
Yep.
Oof, a long way from my original lion bird sorting back when I first discovered SHC hahaha
Yeah, I used to think I was a Badger Bird.
(For the record, Iā€™m writing this in a word doc, and itā€™s almost 2k now. I havenā€™t checked how long these normally are, so Iā€™m really sorry if this is too long!!! Iā€™m like physically incapable of being concise Iā€™m so sorry)
Sometimes I edit or re-arrange these slightly for a cleaning reading experience, but Iā€™m having fun. I was engaged all the way though.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for doing these!! Theyā€™re super interesting and Iā€™m sure it helps people a lot, and also itā€™s really cool to see how different people think. Iā€™m a socially-challenged writer, so itā€™s useful to have that bit of insight into other peopleā€™s minds. Love ya <3 <3 <3

BRF Reading - 28th of July 2021
This is speculation only
Cards drawn 28th of July 2021
I am putting this reading under a cut so you can skip over it if you want. I can not emphasise enough that this is speculation only.
Question: Was Prince Charles sexually involved with Meghan Markle in any way?
Tumblr media
I did a private draw on this this reading around November last year, and the answer I got then was that Meghan definitely offered, but I couldn't tell whether Charles had taken her up on the offer or not. Yesterday, the question and prior reading came to my mind after I read a comment on one of my other recent readings, and the question tugged at me until I drew cards on it. I was looking for further clarification on the 'did he or didn't he' aspect. I was expecting a No, he did not, but what I got was very different.
Interpretation: At the very least, there was some heavily sexually charged flirting going on. There are several indications that this went further.
Card One: The King of Swords. This is a person who is very good at strategy and cold, rational thinking uninfluenced by any emotions or even morality. The person on the card is Odysseus (Greek) or Ulysses (Roman), the King of Ithaca who spent ten years getting home after the Trojan wars because he had angered the gods. His voyage took him to many perilous situations, and he had to use all his wits and guile to get out of them, with some methods being not exactly honest. He was seen by the Greeks as a master of strategy but called 'cruel' and 'deceitful' by the Romans.
This energy from this card is that of Meghan's attitude to flirting/being sexually available to Charles. Like the two faces of Odysseus, she pursued what she saw as good strategy even though it involved being deceitful and even cruel to others. She thought that this behaviour was the best strategy to get get her what she wanted, and she went for it. The fact that Charles was married to Camilla and she was engaged/married to Harry did not bother her one bit.
Card Two: The Devil. The figure on this card is of Pan, the god of nature and of your most basic instincts. The Devil itself is a card of being bound to addictions - sex, drugs, alcohol, gambling - and/or of following your most base level desires. it can mean being in an toxic relationship, being codependent, having toxic behaviours, habits and/or thought patterns. It can represent an inordinate love of luxury.
The Devil is the card for the sign of Capricorn, and it can mean the negative Capricorn traits of social climbing, obtaining higher social status at whatever cost, flaunting brands to show wealth and prestige, and so on.
I am getting two energies from this card. The first is Meghan. She was definitely sexually available to Charles if he so wished, and I think she was hoping to get Charles dependent on her or in her control using sex. She did this for the benefits Charles could give her - money, including her in royal events she would not have otherwise attended, money, possibly access to State jewellery, money, overseas tours, and money.
The second energy is of a base level sexual desire - I see, I want, I f*ck - nothing more complicated than that. This seems to be the level at which Charles would be operating if he took Meghan up on her offers, i.e. nothing more than the desires of the moment, like a drunken fling. I think he would be ashamed of himself afterwards, but it wouldn't stop him coming back for more if he wanted to. I feel that Charles has poor control over his desire for other women, so it is hard for him to turn down offers that he finds attractive. It is coming through very strongly that this is low-level sex, the gratification of the desires of the moment that does not last beyond the act itself.
When I was shuffling the cards, I said that if Meghan and Charles were sexually involved, to give me the devil card, and it appeared in the spread. I will leave you to draw your own conclusions from that.
Card Three: The Five of Wands. This is a card of conflict. It shows Jason and Medea fighting the dragon who guarded the golden fleece. Jason was only able to complete his quest with the help of Medea. He ended up abandoning her so he could marry another King's daughter, which would help him financially and politically.
The energy from this card is one of conflict, and the conflict is between a couple who have passed through troubled times together, as Jason and Medea did. The conflict was definitely caused by Meghan's flirting (and anything else that was offered). One half of the couple was worried that the other half would neglect them and their interest in favour of Meghan - that they would end up abandoned as Medea was.
In this conflict, Meghan is the dragon, who is trying to destroy the couple. I don't think Meghan set out to destroy the relationship, but she definitely knew about the conflict she was causing (as the dragon knew who was fighting it), and I am getting that it gave her joy that she was the source of the conflict.
Card Four: The Two of Cups. This is a card about relationships, of choosing to be in a relationship, of long term, enduring romantic relationships, and of starting a new relationship, and of reconciliations in relationships. The card shows the god Eros rescuing Psyche from where she was left to be devoured by a monster, a 'knight in shining armour' act that was the start of a long journey of growing into a mature relationship.
The main energy I get from this card is that of a long term relationship, and of reconciliation - overcoming trials to be together, as happened with Eros and Psyche, with the relationship changing as a result of those trials. The clarifiers show that the relationship is Camilla's long term relationship with Charles.
As the Two of Cups comes after the Five of Wands, this tells me that the conflict of the Five of Wands has affected the relationship shown by the Two of Cups. The conflict hasn't broken up the relationship, but it has been something that called for some sort of reconciliation in this long term relationship. Camilla and Charles have had to work together to reaffirm their commitment to each other and to heal the damage caused to their relationship by the conflict shown in the Five of wands.
As a card of new relationships, this card suggests that the conflict of the Five of Wands is based on the fact that Charles did have a relationship, however fleeting, with Meghan.
I drew two clarifiers for this card:
Clarifier One: The Five of Swords. The card shows Orestes being confronted with his duty by Apollo, a duty that is an impossible choice - he must kill his mother to avenge his father, but that will mean invoking the wrath of the Furies, as matricide is a sin against the gods. The card is about a situation that means that even when you win, there is a sense of loss.
The energy I am getting from this card is one of duty. Camilla will stay with Charles, as she sees that as her duty (and she does love him), but she stays knowing that he is susceptible to advances from other women, even after all these years together. Her 'winning' by keeping her relationship with Charles is accompanied by a sense of loss, as the trust between the two of them has been damaged. They can reconcile, but the relationship will never be what it was before Meghan's flirting and whatever else happened between her and Charles.
Clarifier Two: The Queen of Cups. This is a water sign person, particularly a Cancer, and in this spread it represents Camilla, who is a sun sign Cancer and in a long term romantic relationship with Charles. The Cups suit represents feelings in the tarot, and I think Camilla definitely has Feelings about this situation.
Card Five: The Ace of Wands. This card is about an upsurge of new creative energy, and in this reading it is sexual energy. The figure on the cards is Zeus, the chief god of Olympus who was well known for not being able to keep it in his pants, and he is holding a thick wooden staff that is spurting fire/creative energy everywhere. It does not get much more sexual than that.
Zeus represents Prince Charles, as in this deck the gods usually represent members of the BRF, and Zeus is the chief god just as Prince Charles is now the top ranking male in the BRF. There was definitely sexual energy between Charles and Meghan. Whether Charles acted upon that energy - the card says yes rather than no (as per the imagery in the above paragraph), but I am having trouble believing that, so if you are as well, I do not blame you.
This card, and especially Zeus on the card, reminds me of Charles's sexual past, and the stories about him having Camilla as his girlfriend and anyone who took his fancy on the side, and later on having Diana as his wife and Camilla as his mistress. The theme of Camilla having to share him with another woman/women is what stands out to me.
Underlying Energy One: The Tower. This is the card of s sudden, shocking event that destroys part of your life and leaves you to rebuild it from rubble. The card shows the god Poseidon, the lord of the sea, destroying a tower. The sea imagery is standing out to me, and this tells me that this tower moment is all about feelings (as water represents feelings), tumultuous feelings that echo the rough sea. Poseidon was also a god known for his fertility and his rampant sexuality.
I think that Charles's actions towards Meghan have stirred up some very strong feelings in Camilla, and as a result his relationship with Camilla was badly damaged. He may also have damaged his relationship with other family members by favouring Meghan, especially in the area of money. Both he and Camilla would have to work to rebuild their relationship after the damage caused by Meghan.
Underlying Energy Two: The World. This is a card about the end of a cycle. It is time to pause, reflect on the past, celebrate the success, and then to go forward from here. The energy I am getting from this card is very much 'the end of cycle' and not 'celebrate the success (of the end of a long term project)'. With the tower moment, something in the relationship between Charles and Camilla has come to an end. The relationship will continue, but something within it is over and has moved into a new way of being. It can not go back to how it was pre-Meghan.
Confirmation Spread: After I finished this spread, I asked again if Charles was sexually involved with Meghan, and I said if he was to give me the Devil or the Lovers card. I shuffled and drew the three cards shown under the spread:
1. The King of Cups, which is a water sign card, especially a Scorpio, and here represents Prince Charles, a sun sign Scorpio
2. The Lovers - The Lovers is a card about values and choices, especially choices in love. Do we choose relationships from a mature perspective, based on our long term values and beliefs, or do we choose them from an immature perspective, according to our base desires of the moment?
3. The King of Wands, which is a fire sign person, particularly a Leo, and here stand for Meghan, a sun sign Leo.
So we have Prince Charles, The Lovers, and Meghan.
I think the conclusion is obvious.
Conclusion: From the above cards, as much as I do not want to believe it, I have to conclude that Prince Charles and Meghan most likely had one or more sexual encounters - or at the very least, that the offer was there, it was blatant, and Charles was considering taking her up on it.
Meghan was willing to make herself available to Prince Charles sexually as a matter of strategy, to get more money and benefits from him. Prince Charles considered the offer and/or took her up on the offer from a base-level sexual impulse - the satisfaction of the desire of the moment. This act caused tension and conflict between Charles and Camilla, as Camilla thought that she and her interests would be neglected in favour of Meghan. It caused a rift and a coldness in their relationship. Even if what was between Charles and Meghan was just heavy flirting with the offer of sex, it still caused a rift between Charles and Camilla. Once again, Camilla was sharing Charles with another woman.
This event/offer/situation was a Tower moment for Charles, something that damaged his marriage and while the damage could be repaired, something in the relationship has changed and/or ended. It will not be the same as it was before Meghan's advances (whether Charles succumbed to them or not).
Note: I will be revisiting this question in a few weeks, if only privately, to see if I get the same answer or not.
