i am so set in my belief that gale's dad left when he was a kid. like that man has all the hallmarks of being a kid of an absent father. always trying to prove his worth to people? check. thinks everyone is better off without him? check. i also feel like he would at least mention in passing if his dad had died instead of just not mentioning him whatsoever. the fact that he doesn't say anything about his father makes me think it's a sore spot that he doesn't like to talk about.

Miguel damn near goes into cardiac arrest. There are a thousand ways an early morning can go careening fast in Miguel's line of work, and yet this is nowhere near any known way at all. Should he have planned for this, somehow, some way?

Plus, the portal was blue-- he's never seen that before! What could that mean for reality? The multi-verse and traveling within it? Physics as we know it?

Before he can let himself go down any more catastrophizing, he's moving on autopilot to wrangle the three mystery kids in his lab, away from any fragile equipment or anything that could hurt them.

Though it feels rather like trying to herd cats, Miguel manages to get them safe in the middle of the room, and only lets go once he's sure they won't bolt. He can't recognize them as any children of some spider-variant in the database so far, which only adds to the rising panic in his chest.

But he's the adult here, the leader, and he swallows it down. He wills his voice to be as calm but authoritative as possible-- silently thanking whatever is out there that it doesn't shake.
