Note
do you think you could write about a white rabbit reader like how did with wild cat? as in the white rabbit from alice in wonderlandâ whoâs more of a polite anxious mess trying to follow the queens strict rules but is kind of bad at it. possibly shy or on the quieter side like a rabbit beastman would probably be, considering most of the beastmens personalities align with their animal counterparts behavior. and for some reason most of the beastmen we see, or even the merpeople, are all predator animals so i would love to see their interactions with a prey animal. for the first time ever, leona would actually be scientifically correct in calling the reader an herbivore. they would also be the only beastman whoâs not sorted into savanaclaw i imagine. in canonical alice in wonderland, or at least a majority of its interpretations, the white rabbit is considered a neutral, somewhat villain leaning character. he works for the queen but heâs never outright evil, if anything heâs kind of a coward as he is initially terrified of alice. so i can see reader being mostly benevolent and a little bit of a scaredy cat whoâs still relatively friendly. thank you
White Rabbit! Reader x Everyone
Thank you for the request <3 I hope you like it
Character: All NRC + Staff + Rollo, Neige
Riddle Rosehearts:
Youâre always on edge around Riddle, frantically trying to follow the Queen's rules and his. But you trip over your own feet so often that Riddle ends up scolding you almost every day.
"Rule 76: No running in the halls!" Riddle huffs as you scramble past him, dropping a handful of papers as you trip over your own shoes.
You fumble around, trying to gather the papers while stammering an apology, eyes wide and twitching like a startled rabbit. âS-sorry! I didnât mean toâoh no! Rule 17: Never drop important documents...â
Riddle looks ready to blow up, but when you shoot him those big, panicked eyes, he exhales sharply through his nose, the lecture stuck in his throat. "Just⌠get it together!" he mutters, turning on his heel, clearly flustered. âHow am I supposed to enforce rules when you look like you're going to faint every time I open my mouth?!â
In the back of your mind, you wonder if heâd be so strict if he knew you were working for the "Queen." But you don't have the nerve to tell him that, so you just nod and awkwardly salute.
Trey Clover:
You never quite relax around Trey, even though he's the calmest person in Heartslabyul. Every time youâre near him, youâre just waiting for the moment when heâll ask you to do something scary, like taste one of his experimental dishes orâworseâeat cake in front of Riddle. The idea makes your ears droop.
"Hey, you okay?" Trey asks when he notices you standing stiffly by the kitchen door. Heâs got flour on his apron and a knife in hand, chopping fruit with easy precision.
You jump at the sound of his voice and nearly knock over a stack of plates. "I-Iâm fine!" you squeak, standing even straighter like youâre in the Queenâs court.
Trey chuckles softly. "You know, Iâm not going to bite. Unless Iâm making rabbit stew." He winks.
Your eyes widen in horror, ears trembling. "R-rabbit stew?!"
He laughs, holding up his hands. "I'm kidding! Kidding!" Trey seems to find your reactions endlessly amusing, always leaning in with a gentle smile. "But if you need help relaxing, just say the word. Maybe we can make some tea. No pressure."
But all you hear is "pressure," and you feel like you're about to combust.
Cater Diamond:
Cater thinks you're the cutest thing on two legs, especially when you're in a flustered state. Which, unfortunately for you, is almost all the time.
âYo, lilâ bunny!â Cater calls out as he sidles up to you in the hall, phone in hand. Youâre mid-panic about how youâre going to explain to Riddle why your shoes are untied, your tie is crooked, and you accidentally skipped breakfast because you were too nervous to eat.
You freeze, giving Cater a look like a deer in headlightsâor rather, a rabbit in a snare. âD-donât call me that,â you mumble, ears twitching furiously. âR-Riddle might hearâŚâ
Cater just grins, pulling out his phone to snap a quick selfie of your panicked expression. âYouâve gotta chill! Itâs like, the 5th time today youâve looked like you're on trial.â
You flinch. On trial?! Thatâs even worse! âI-I canât relax! W-what if I break a rule?!â
Cater just pats your head, ruffling your hair. "Well, I think you're doing just fine! Plus, it makes for great content. Smile, #bunnyfails!"
You want to disappear into the ground. But Cater just keeps snapping pics and laughing.
Ace Trappola:
Ace treats you like an adorable walking ball of stress thatâs just begging to be messed with. And who is Ace if not a professional button-pusher?
"Hey! Rabbit!" Ace shouts across the Heartslabyul gardens one day, and you nearly jump out of your skin, spilling tea all over yourself.
âE-Excuse me?!â you sputter, face burning as you frantically blot at the stain on your uniform.
Ace saunters over with a grin on his face. "Oh, sorry. Did I startle you? Youâre just so jumpyâlike, literally! Itâs hilarious!"
"I-Iâm not jumpy!" you insist, but your trembling hands betray you as you fumble with your napkin, accidentally knocking the sugar bowl off the table.
Ace bursts out laughing, nearly doubling over. "Dude, youâre killing me! I swear, every time Iâm around, itâs like watching a sitcom! *This* is quality entertainment!"
You huff, glaring at him, ears drooping. "Iâm not entertainment."
Ace just gives you a thumbs-up. "Sure you are. And the best part is, you do it all for free!"
Deuce Spade:
Deuce wants to help. He really does. But every time he sees you looking like youâre two seconds from a meltdown, he panics even harder than you do.
"W-whoa! Are you okay?!" Deuce exclaims when he finds you frantically digging through your bag, trying to find the Queenâs latest decreeâor was it Riddleâs study notes? You can't remember because youâre too stressed.
"I-I lost the thing! You know, the thing!" you gasp out, waving your arms wildly.
Deuce pales. "Oh no, thatâs bad! I-I can help! What thing?!â
"I DONâT KNOW!" you cry, at the peak of panic now.
Deuce stares at you for a second, eyes wide. Then he also starts scrambling around. "Okay, okay! We can find it! Stay calm! Wellânot calm, but calmer!"
You both end up running in circles until Trey finds you and asks, deadpan, âWhat exactly are you two looking for?â
The silence that follows is deafening.
âUmâŚâ Deuce rubs the back of his head sheepishly. âI... kind of forgot.â
Leona Kingscholar:
Leona knows exactly how to push your buttonsâand he does so with as little effort as possible. For someone so calm and lazy, he seems to get a real kick out of watching you squirm.
âOi, herbivore,â Leona drawls from his usual spot under the shade of a tree. You freeze, clutching your bag tighter as you glance nervously in his direction. âWhy are you sneaking around like a prey animal? Oh, waitâyou are one.â
You flinch and stammer, âI-Iâm not sneaking, Iâm just, um... minding my own business?â
Leona smirks, lazily cracking open one eye to look at you. âIf you âmind your businessâ any harder, youâre gonna trip over your own feet.â
You gulp, taking a step back, but heâs not done with you. âMaybe if you tried relaxing for once, you wouldnât be so jittery.â
âI-I canât help it!â you squeak, nearly tripping as you scuttle away, ears twitching furiously. âI have to follow the rules!â
Leona watches you run off, chuckling lowly to himself. âRules, huh? Just donât drop dead from the stress, or Iâll have to carry your sorry hide out of here.â
You spend the next week worrying that heâs going to jump out of nowhere and pounce on youâbut of course, thatâs way too much effort for Leona.
Ruggie Bucchi:
Ruggie sees you as someone whoâs just begging to be teased, and he has no qualms about taking full advantage of your easily flustered nature.
One day, while youâre doing your best to stay out of trouble, Ruggie sneaks up behind you, flashing that mischievous grin of his. âHey there, Bunny! Need some help with that?â
You yelp and nearly leap out of your skin, sending your stack of papers flying in every direction. âR-Ruggie! You startled me!â
Ruggie snickers as he helps you gather up the papers. âAw, câmon, I didnât mean to. Youâre just too easy, yâknow? Makes me wanna mess with you a little.â
You pout, ears drooping. âW-well, itâs not very nice...â
He shrugs, still grinning. âWhat can I say? Itâs in my nature. But I guess Iâll help you out, just this once.â He leans in closer and lowers his voice, adding, âDonât expect it for free, though.â
Your face goes pale. âWh-what do you want?â
Ruggie chuckles. âRelax, Iâm just teasing! For now, anyway.â He winks before sauntering off, leaving you clutching your papers and wondering if every beastman in Savanaclaw has it out for you.
Jack Howl:
Jack feels a sense of duty to protect you. Even though he thinks youâre a little too skittish for your own good, he respects how hard you try to follow the rulesâeven when you trip over them.
âHey, wait up,â Jack calls after you one day as youâre hurrying across campus. You turn to see him jogging over, looking concerned.
âO-oh! Jack! I-I didnât do anything wrong, did I?â you ask nervously, already panicking that you might have broken some rule.
Jack frowns, crossing his arms. âYou didnât do anything wrong. Why do you always assume you did?â
You blink up at him, ears twitching. âI-Iâm just worried Iâll mess up...â
Jack sighs, shaking his head. âYouâre too hard on yourself. Look, if anyone tries to mess with you, Iâll step in. No oneâs gonna hurt you while Iâm around.â
Your eyes widen. âR-really? Youâd do that?â
Jack nods firmly. âOf course. Youâve got a good heart, even if youâre a bit jumpy. Someoneâs gotta look out for you.â
You smile up at him, feeling a little more reassured. But before you can thank him, you trip over your own feet and fall forwardâright into Jackâs arms.
He catches you easily, looking down at you with a raised brow. âYouâre really something, you know that?â
You blush furiously, scrambling to right yourself. âS-sorry! I-I didnât mean to...â
Jack just chuckles softly. âDonât worry. Iâve got your back, Bunny.â
Azul Ashengrotto:
Azul sees your anxiety as an untapped market. Heâs confident he could help soothe your nervesâwith a little contract, of course.
One day, while youâre quietly minding your own business in the Mostro Lounge, Azul slips into the seat across from you with his signature grin. âAh, my dear friend. You seem rather... tense.â
You freeze in place, blinking rapidly. âO-oh! N-no, Iâm just... trying to follow the rules.â
Azulâs eyes gleam behind his glasses. âWhy donât I offer you a deal? I can help alleviate some of that stress of yours. All it would take is a small favor in return...â
Your ears twitch nervously. âU-um... I-Iâm not sure...â
Azul leans closer, lowering his voice to a silky whisper. âImagine itâno more anxiety, no more worries about breaking the rules. All youâd have to do is sign here...â
You nearly pass out from the pressure, eyes darting around the lounge as if looking for an escape. âI-I think Iâm fine! Really! Thank you!â
Azul chuckles darkly as you bolt from the lounge. He watches you go with a sigh. âAh, such potential... But I suppose itâs not every day I encounter a rabbit so determined to resist.â
Jade Leech:
Jade finds your anxious behavior endlessly fascinating. Heâs not one to outright teaseâhe prefers subtletyâbut he enjoys watching you squirm in his presence.
One afternoon, youâre frantically trying to fix a mistake in your homework when Jade appears behind you without a sound. âOh my, is everything alright?â
You yelp, almost knocking over your ink bottle. âJ-Jade! You startled me!â
Jade smiles pleasantly, though you can see a mischievous glint in his eyes. âI apologize. I simply couldnât help but notice how... flustered you seemed.â
You try to calm your racing heart. âI-Iâm just trying to finish this assignment...â
Jade leans over your shoulder, examining your work. âAh, I see. Perhaps I could offer some assistance? Though I must admit, it is rather... amusing to watch you at times.â
You flush, ears twitching in embarrassment. âA-amusing?â
Jade chuckles softly, standing upright again. âIndeed. Youâre quite endearing in your own way.â
Youâre not sure if thatâs a compliment or not, but you nod meekly. âT-thank you... I think?â
Floyd Leech:
Floyd loves messing with you. Itâs as simple as that. Your reactions are priceless, and he never misses an opportunity to make you jump out of your skin.
âBunnyyyyy!â Floyd calls out, voice echoing through the hall as he chases after you. You speed up, desperately trying to get away, but Floyd is faster, his long legs catching up in no time.
He grabs you by the shoulders and spins you around with a grin. âGotcha!â
You practically shriek. âF-Floyd! I-I wasnâtââ
Floyd cackles, bending down to look you in the eyes. âYouâre always so jumpy, Bunny. Itâs fun chasing you! Makes me wanna squeeze you even more.â
You tremble under his intense gaze, feeling like a mouse caught by a cat. âP-please donât squeeze too hard...â
Floyd laughs again and ruffles your hair. âNo promises! But youâre too funny to squish all at once. Guess Iâll just have to keep playing with you!â
You manage a weak smile, trying not to collapse from sheer anxiety. âG-great...â
Kalim Al-Asim:
Kalim is oblivious to your constant anxiety and thinks youâre just really shy. He goes out of his way to befriend you, always offering kind words and gifts to make you feel welcome.
One day, Kalim approaches you with a beaming smile, holding out a brightly wrapped gift. âHey, I got this for you!â
Your ears twitch in surprise. âF-for me? Why?â
Kalim laughs cheerfully. âWhy not? Youâre my friend! And you always look so nervous, I thought this might cheer you up!â
You blink down at the gift, overwhelmed by his kindness. âI-I donât know what to say...â
Kalim grins wider. âNo need to say anything! Just know that if you ever feel anxious, Iâm here for you, okay?â
His sunny demeanor is so contagious that you canât help but smile back. âTh-thank you, Kalim. That means a lot...â
Kalim claps you on the back with a laugh, nearly knocking you off your feet. âNo worries! Weâre friends, after all!â
Jamil Viper:
Jamil is mildly exasperated by your anxious nature. He already has his hands full with Kalim, so dealing with you on top of that feels like another babysitting job. Still, he does his best to help you out when Kalim inevitably ropes you into their social circle.
One day, youâre standing awkwardly at the edge of a party, trying to blend into the wallpaper when Jamil approaches you with a sigh. âYou look like youâd rather be anywhere else.â
You glance at him nervously. âI-I donât want to cause any trouble...â
Jamil pinches the bridge of his nose. âYouâre not causing trouble. Just... relax a little, okay? You donât have to be so anxious all the time.â
You look up at him with wide eyes. âI-I donât know how...â
Jamil sighs again, crossing his arms. âWell, just... follow Kalimâs lead, I guess. He doesnât worry about anything.â
You look over at Kalim, whoâs dancing on a table and laughing without a care in the world. âEasier said than done...â
Jamil gives you a tired look. âTell me about it.â
Vil Schoenheit:
Vil is very much like the Queen you serveâstrict, elegant, and entirely intimidating. Which means every time youâre around him, you end up feeling like youâre going to pass out from sheer anxiety.
âWhy are you slouching like that?â Vil snaps, noticing you trying to fade into the background during a Pomefiore meeting. He points a perfectly manicured finger at you, expression sharp. âPosture is important, darling.â
You immediately stand straighter, ears trembling slightly. âI-Iâm sorry, Vil! I didnât mean toâ"
âHmm,â Vil tilts his head, examining you with a critical eye. âI swear, being around you is like trying to train an anxious little bunny. How am I supposed to shape you into anything presentable if youâre always two seconds away from fainting?â
âI-I promise to do better!â you stammer, sweating bullets.
Vil sighs dramatically, pinching the bridge of his nose. âJust⌠try not to look like prey when youâre in front of an audience, alright? We canât have Pomefioreâs image ruined because someone mistook you for their lunch.â
You nod furiously, completely unsure how youâre supposed to accomplish that but determined to try.
Rook Hunt:
Rook finds you utterly fascinating, like a rare creature heâs determined to observe in its natural habitat. Which is to say, heâs always popping up out of nowhere and scaring the living daylights out of you.
âMon lapin!â Rook exclaims from behind you, and you jump about three feet in the air, ears standing straight up.
âR-Rook! Please donât do that!â you gasp, clutching your chest as you try to calm your racing heart.
Rook just smiles at you, his eyes glinting with amusement. âAh, but I cannot help it! The way you reactâso pure, so genuine, like a rabbit hearing a twig snap in the forest! Itâs magnifique!â
You gulp, ears slowly drooping back down. âI-I donât think being compared to prey is exactly a complimentâŚâ
âBut of course it is!â Rook insists, stepping closer and giving you a dazzling grin. âYou are a creature of instinct, always alert, always prepared to flee! There is beauty in that, mon ami. And I, as your loyal huntsman, will ensure no harm befalls you.â
You smile nervously, unsure if thatâs comforting or even scarier. âT-thatâs⌠good to know?â
Rookâs eyes sparkle, as if heâs just found his next great challenge. âAh, but one day, I hope to see you without fear, to see the calm, serene smile of a rabbit at rest. What a glorious sight that would be!â
You have no idea how to respond to that, so you just nod, deciding itâs better not to question Rookâs eccentricity.
Epel Felmier:
Epel thinks youâre kind of cool, actually. Youâre nervous all the time, yeah, but youâre also from a strict background and work under pressure constantly. He respects that. Which means heâs decided that youâre his unofficial partner in surviving Vilâs tyranny.
âHey, câmon, you donât need to be that scared of Vil,â Epel says one day, nudging your side as the two of you scrub cauldrons in the alchemy lab. âSure, heâs scary, but if you just stand up to him once, heâll back off⌠probably.â
You glance at Epel, eyes wide. âS-stand up to Vil?! Are you crazy?! I canât do that! Heâll turn me into a newt orâo-or make me into some kind of fashionable accessory!â
Epel chuckles, shaking his head. âNah, he ainât that bad. You just gotta show him youâve got guts. Or at least, like, fake it.â
You swallow hard, ears drooping. âF-faking it sounds risky⌠What if he notices?â
Epel grins, giving you a thumbs-up. âThen we run. Fast. Like the prey animals we are.â
You blink at him, half-horrified, half-impressed. âYou⌠consider yourself a prey animal?â
Epel shrugs. âSometimes, yeah. I mean, what else am I gonna do against Vil? Might as well embrace it. Besides, youâre good at dodginâ people, right? We can make it work.â
You stare at him, processing his words, then sigh in resignation. âI guess weâre in this together thenâŚâ
Epel pats your shoulder with a grin. âThatâs the spirit! Weâre gonna make it through this, bunny style.â
You still have no idea what âbunny styleâ entails, but youâre willing to trust Epelâs wild plansâfor now.
Idia Shroud:
Idia has never related to anyone more in his life. You anxiety is like looking into a jittery, trembling mirror, and for once, Idia is the calm oneârelatively speaking.
âW-wait, you have to deliver a message to the Queen?!â Idia whispers, his hair sparking nervously. âThatâs like, a total nightmare scenario.â
You nod rapidly, wringing your hands. âY-yes, but Iâm already late, and if I donât get there soon, itâs off with my head!â
Idia shivers. âNo way. Iâd rather stay in my room for a thousand years.â He pauses, then adds, âBut, um, if you donât wanna go, maybe⌠I dunno⌠we could⌠not go together?â
You blink at him, your ears twitching at the idea of hiding away instead. âR-really? We can do that?â
He gives you an awkward thumbs-up, his face flushed. âYeah⌠like, whatâs the worst that could happen? Besides decapitation⌠but itâs not like anyone would expect me to be brave, right?â
You both glance at Ortho, whoâs floating nearby and giving you the biggest, most judgmental sigh he can muster.
âYou two need more courage,â Ortho says, shaking his head. âBut Iâll help. Letâs make a plan!â
And just like that, your anxiety spirals back into full-on panic.
Ortho Shroud:
Ortho thinks youâre adorable, but he also realizes that youâre a magnet for trouble. So, naturally, he has to make sure youâre safe at all times.
âGood morning!â Ortho beams, floating beside you as you fumble with your basket of letters. âWhere are you off to today?â
You twitch slightly, looking over your shoulder. âOh, um, just delivering some messages⌠Itâs a bit urgentâŚâ
Ortho smiles, activating his sensors. âNo problem! Iâll track your location and help with navigation!â
You blink, unsure if you should be relieved or more nervous. âT-track my location?â
Ortho nods cheerfully, a holographic map popping up. âYup! We canât have you getting lost in the rose maze again. Remember last time? You were stuck for hours!â
Your ears droop, embarrassed. âI-itâs not my fault everything looks the sameâŚâ
âNot to worry!â Ortho reassures. âIâll make sure youâre in and out in no time! Plus, if you faint from fear, I can carry you.â
The thought of Ortho hauling you over his shoulder while Riddle scolds you is somehow even scarier than getting lost.
Malleus Draconia:
Malleus has never met someone so jittery around himâand thatâs saying something. He finds it⌠oddly endearing.
âGood evening, Child of Man,(Hare(?))â Malleus greets, his deep voice echoing through the hallway.
You jump about a foot in the air, your ears standing straight up. âL-Lord Malleus! I-I didnât see you there!â
Malleus tilts his head, clearly confused. âI was standing right in the middle of the hall.â
You gulp, trying not to show your terror. âS-sorry! I just, um, wasnât expectingâumâdragons are very quiet, apparently!â
Malleus raises an eyebrow, then smiles, showing just a hint of fang. âI assure you, I have no intention of frightening you.â
You nod rapidly, ears still trembling. âO-of course, Your Highness! I mean, whoâs scared? Not me! Totally fine! Super relaxed!â
Malleus chuckles, and the sound is somehow both amused and terrifying. âYou truly are quite⌠peculiar.â
You have no idea if thatâs a compliment or an insult, but you nod like itâs the greatest praise in the world. âT-thank you, Lord Malleus.â
Lilia Vanrouge:
Lilia finds you endlessly amusing. He likes to see just how much he can tease you before you pass out from fright.
âHello, little rabbit,â Lilia says, appearing out of *nowhere* like he always does.
You squeak, nearly dropping your stack of paperwork. âA-ah! L-Lilia! P-please donât sneak up on me like that!â
He grins, fangs peeking out. âOh, but itâs so much fun. You jump every time, like a startled bunny.â
You frown, puffing your cheeks out indignantly, but it only makes you look cuter. âI-I canât help it! Iâm just⌠easily startled.â
Lilia nods sagely, pretending to consider your words. âPerhaps I should warn you next time? Though that might take away all the funâŚâ
You gulp, trying to decide if heâs joking or not. âP-please doâŚâ
He laughs, patting your head affectionately. âI make no promises, little one. Just stay on your toes!â
Silver:
Silver finds your constant panic a little concerning, but mostly, it makes him tired just watching you.
You find Silver leaning against a tree, dozing off like usual. âUm, Silver? A-arenât you supposed to be training?â
Silver blinks awake, giving you a sleepy smile. âOh, hello. Training? Right, yes, I was. I⌠took a short rest.â
You fidget, eyes darting around nervously. âW-well, um, I donât want to interrupt⌠but could you help me? I think I lost the Queenâs letter again.â
Silver nods slowly, rubbing his eyes. âOf course. But first, you need to breathe. Youâre more jittery than the dormouse.â
You force a shaky breath in, nodding. âR-right. Breathe. I can do that.â
Silver gives you a thumbs-up. âGood. Just stay calm. Weâll find it together.â
And then he promptly falls asleep again.
You stare at him, exasperated. âS-Silver?!â
Sebek Zigvolt:
Sebek is flabbergasted by your lack of composure. It drives him nutsâbut also, he thinks youâre kind of adorable, like a helpless bunny.
âYOU!â Sebek bellows, making you flinch so hard you almost trip over yourself. âHOW CAN YOU BE THIS INCOMPETENT?!â
You cringe, clutching your ears. âI-Iâm sorry! Iâm trying my best, I swear!â
Sebek huffs, crossing his arms. âYOUR BEST IS BARELY ADEQUATE! YOU MUST STRIVE FOR PERFECTION, LIKE LORD MALLEUS!â
You gulp, nodding frantically. âR-right! Iâll⌠Iâll try harder!â
Sebek looks at your terrified face and sighs, his tone softening just a bit. âFINE, FINE. JUST DONâT MESS UP AGAIN. HERE.â
He hands you the paper you dropped, his ears turning slightly pink. âAND STOP LOOKING SO SCARED. ITâS⌠DISTRACTING.â
You blink at him, surprised. âD-distracting?â
âYES!â he shouts, clearly flustered. âNOW GO! LORD MALLEUS EXPECTS PERFECTION!â
You scurry away, leaving Sebek to mutter to himself, face flushed. âSuch a weak little rabbitâŚâ
Rollo Flamme:
Rollo tries so hard not to be charmed by you, really. He doesnât like distractions, and youâre the most distracting bunny heâs ever met.
âAre you lost again?â Rollo asks with a sigh, watching as you nervously peek around a corner.
You jump, ears twitching. âO-oh, Rollo! I was just, um⌠trying to find the courtyardâŚâ
Rollo pinches the bridge of his nose. âYouâve passed it three times already.â
You fumble with your hands, embarrassment turning your face pink. âI-I was just⌠making sure it was the right oneâŚâ
Rollo looks at your big, earnest eyes and sighs again, softer this time. âYouâre hopeless,â he mutters. Then, reluctantly, he reaches for your hand, leading you back the way you came. âCome on. I canât leave you wandering around all day.â
You follow behind him, ears drooping. âS-sorryâŚâ
Rollo shakes his head, not even looking back. âJust try not to get lost again.â
You canât help but smile a little. âI-Iâll try.â
Neige LeBlanche:
Neige thinks youâre the cutest thing ever. Heâs the kind of person who immediately wants to be friends with you, especially because you look so nervous all the time.
âHello!â Neige waves, beaming at you from across the way.
You blink, startled. âO-oh, um⌠hello, NeigeâŚâ
Neige practically skips over to you, his smile never faltering. âAre you okay? You look a little lost.â
You nod rapidly, trying not to be intimidated by his energy. âY-yes, Iâm fine! Just a little⌠umâŚâ
âAw, donât worry!â Neige says, giving you an encouraging pat on the back. âYouâve got this! I believe in you!â
You stare at him, completely baffled. âYou⌠you do?â
Neige nods earnestly. âOf course! And if you need any help, just let me know, okay? Iâll be your bunny buddy!â
Your ears twitch at the nickname, and you manage a shaky smile. âO-okay⌠Thank you, Neige.â
Dire Crowley:
Crowley finds your constant worrying both exhausting and oddly entertaining. Heâs never seen anyone so concerned about breaking every single rule.
âAh, You!â Crowley calls out, catching you just as youâre about to dash off with a stack of paperwork. âDo you have the reports I asked for?â
You freeze, turning to him with wide eyes. âR-reports? Oh no, IâI thought I delivered those to Professor Trein!â
Crowley sighs dramatically, putting a hand to his forehead. âOf course, of course. Why must I be surrounded by such incompetent students?â
You fidget, looking down at your feet. âI-Iâm sorry, Headmaster⌠Iâll go get them right awayââ
Crowley waves a hand dismissively. âNo, no, I suppose it can wait. You do look like youâre about to pass out from all the running.â
Your ears droop, and you mumble, âI-Iâm not⌠Iâm just⌠very busyâŚâ
He chuckles, shaking his head. âWell, do try not to collapse before lunch, wonât you? I canât have students fainting in my halls.â
You nod, scurrying away. Crowley watches you go, muttering to himself, âHonestly, there's no one more magnanimous than meâŚâ
Divus Crewel:
Crewel is exasperated by your anxious behavior. He wants you to be confident, but instead, youâre always shaking in your boots.
â[Name], if you canât handle a simple potion assignment, how do you expect to survive in this world?â Crewel says, his tone sharp as he points at your cauldron.
You gulp, ears twitching. âI-Iâm sorry, Professor⌠I just, um, thought I might have put too much wormrootâŚâ
Crewel raises an eyebrow. âToo much? Or not enough? Make up your mind, pup.â
Your eyes widen, and you flinch. âR-right! I-I mean, um, not enoughâno, waitâŚâ
Crewel sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. âThis is hopeless.â Then, with a softer tone, he adds, âFocus. You can do this, but not if you keep second-guessing every move.â
You take a deep breath, nodding. âY-yes, Professor.â
Crewel watches as you go back to your work, and though he doesnât say it, thereâs a hint of a smile on his face. âPerhaps thereâs hope for you yet.â
Mozus Trein:
Trein is generally strict, but even he canât bring himself to be too harsh with you. Your anxious nature reminds him of some of his more timid students in the past.
âYouâre late to class again,â Trein says, giving you a stern look.
You flinch, clutching your bag close. âI-Iâm so sorry, Professor⌠I got lost in the halls againâŚâ
Trein sighs, shaking his head. âYouâve been here long enough to know the way, havenât you?â
You nod, ears drooping. âY-yes, sir⌠I just⌠itâs the Queenâs court day, and I was trying to avoid⌠umâŚâ
Trein raises an eyebrow, his expression softening slightly. âAvoid the Queenâs wrath, hm?â He nods, as if understanding completely. âWell, see that it doesnât happen again. And try to relax. You wonât learn anything if youâre always in a state of panic.â
You bow deeply, almost knocking over your desk in the process. âY-yes, Professor Trein! Thank you!â
Trein sighs as you scurry to your seat, muttering to himself, âPoor child⌠so much anxietyâŚâ
Ashton Vargas:
Vargas canât help but laugh at your feeble attempts at physical activity. Youâre about as coordinated as a baby deerâand just as panicked.
âAlright, everyone! Time for a run around the track!â Vargas shouts, blowing his whistle.
You gulp, your ears already drooping at the thought of running. âU-um, Professor Vargas, Iâm not sure Iâm⌠physically⌠capableâŚâ
Vargas claps you on the back, nearly sending you sprawling. âNonsense! Every beastmanâs got it in them! Even you, little bunny!â
You try to protest, but heâs already started the timer. You stumble forward, your legs shaky, and you can hear Vargas laughing from behind.
âLook at that! The rabbit is really running for their life!â Vargas calls out, and the whole class turns to watch you struggle around the track.
You feel your face burn, but you keep running, heart pounding. Itâs either run or face Vargasâs motivational speeches again, and honestly, youâre not sure which is worse.
Sam:
Sam loves seeing you in his shop, mostly because youâre so jumpy itâs easy to sneak up on youâunintentionally, of course. He finds your reactions amusing.
âHello, hello!â Sam calls out as you walk into his shop, and you jump about a foot in the air.
âAhâM-Mister Sam! I-I didnât see you there!â you stammer, clutching your chest like your heart might leap out.
Sam laughs, leaning over the counter. âYouâre always so jittery, little bunny. Relax! Iâve got just the thing to calm those nervesâŚâ He pulls out a small vial of something labeled âRelaxation Remedy.â
You eye the bottle suspiciously. âUm⌠t-thatâs not⌠gonna put me to sleep, is it?â
He chuckles, shaking his head. âNot unless you drink the whole bottle, friend.â He winks. âIâm just lookinâ out for ya, yâknow?â
You nod, still unsure but grateful. âT-thank you⌠Iâll, um⌠take one, I guessâŚâ
Sam smiles, putting the vial in a bag for you. âNo problem, little imp. Come back if you need more!â
You nod, scurrying out of the shop. Sam watches you leave, shaking his head with a grin. âThat oneâs gonna give themselves a heart attack one dayâŚâ
Grim:
Grim likes to think heâs the bravest in the group, but even he can see youâre worse off than him in the bravery department. He likes to boss you around, mostly to feel better about himself.
âOi, bunny!â Grim shouts, jumping onto your desk. âYou got my homework done yet?â
You squeak, nearly toppling out of your chair. âY-your homework?! Grim, IâI canât keep doing your work for youâŚâ
Grim pouts, waving a paw at you. âOh, come on! Youâre already nervous all the timeâwhatâs a little extra stress, huh?â
You huff, fidgeting with your pen. âG-Grim, Iâm already at my limit! I-Iâve got the Queenâs orders, and Riddleâs rules, and now you want me toââ
Grim interrupts, hopping closer and giving you a smug grin. âYeah, yeah, I get it, youâre a busy bunny. But you know, if you help me, Iâll⌠uh, protect you from any monsters! Yeah, how about that?â
You blink, considering it. âP-protect me? From monsters?â
Grim nods, puffing out his chest. âYup! Iâm the Great Grim, after all! Iâm basically a professional monster hunter.â
You stare at him, unsure, your ears slowly drooping. âI-I guess⌠that would be helpfulâŚâ
Grim smirks, satisfied. âSee? I knew youâd come around!â He jumps off your desk, tail flicking with glee. âAlright, Iâll be back later to pick up my homework. Make sure itâs perfect, okay?â
You sigh, watching him strut away. âH-how did I even get myself into thisâŚ?â
Grim doesnât hear you, already daydreaming about what snack heâll demand from you next. âItâs good to be the boss,â he mutters, chuckling to himself.
You slump in your seat, wondering if there would ever come a day when youâre not running around doing everyoneâs bidding. But then again, you think, maybe thatâs just the fate of a White RabbitâŚ

dungeon meshi | delicious in dungeon; reactions to reader having a crush on them / having a crush on reader
dungeon meshi various x gender neutral reader
note: hey everyone, please be mindful that this is the very first time writing for these characters, i have watched every available episode but i am still reading the manga (though i do have a general idea about the setting and the characters backstories and personalities) so if any characters are ooc to you my apologies, don't be harsh im new here lol. sorry some of them are shorter than others i kind of ran out of ideas when it came to certain characters :p let me know in the comments or reblogs or more preferably in my ask box if you want me to do any other character.
characters: laois, falin, chilchuck, marcille, senshi, namari, shuro, izutsumi (i'm adding her here because feels weird leaving her out when i've added former members of the party, also this is purely sfw so nothing weird will be aimed towards her.)
trigger warnings: nothing out of the ordinary but just read the manga or watch the anime before reading this.
if you like this and my other fanfics, please be considerate to reblog my work, it not only helps reach a broader audience but it also motivates me to make more content like this!
laois touden
reader's crush: when laois finds out that you have a crush on him, his reaction is.. well, how do we put it this way? is he flattered? yes and no, he doesn't see himself as ugly but also doesn't look at himself as the most handsome guy in the world, but someone straight up having a crush on him is kind of new, he doesn't really care much for relationships at the very moment but has thought about settling down with someone he likes, will it be you?
laois' crush: when it comes to having a crush, he tries to be his normal self around you, but sometimes can't help but be a little nervous especially when the two of you are alone, sooner or later he comes to the conclusion of realizing the he indeed, likes you, but confessing is the hard part, he's never thought much about rejection, it is a normal part of life after all, but when it comes to you? it's an entirely different ball game.
falin touden
reader's crush: falin already has someone chasing after her; shuro, theres a 50/50 chance of her reaction to reader's crush being the same as shuro's, but could there be a different reaction this time?
falin's reaction: surprisingly less shy than her brother, when she comes to this conclusion she'll build up the right time to actually confess, not wanting to rush things, just watch out for shuro i guess.
chilchuck tims
reader's crush: chilchuck learning about reader's crush is a bit sad, though he's no stranger to romance as he not only had a wife but also three whole kids, he's not really good with emotions so he's kind of scared you'll leave him just like his wife did, so, if reader confesses, there's gonna be a high chance that you'll be rejected, just give it some time.
chilchuck's crush: this weird feeling in his chest whenever he see's you will confuse him at first.. there's no way he has a crush on you?? after his wife leaving him he didn't really have any interest in romance, he might as well just focus on his work at the moment, one of these days he'll bring up the courage to confess, just not right now.
marcille donato
reader's crush: she can't really decide on whether she'll return the feelings or not, definitely flattered is what i'll say.
marcille's crush: she's similar to falin, she'll build up a better relationship with you for the right time to confess, she tries to make it seem as if she's not into you but it's quite obvious to the other party members.
senshi of izganda
reader's crush: out of everyone, he'll definitely be the most flattered, someone having a crush on him wasn't something he put much thought into, not to mention romance kind of isn't his thing, nor does he think he have the time for a significant other.
senshi's crush: i don't think this is the very first time he's ever had feelings for someone, but it's definitely a special feeling, he's not nervous of confessing his feelings at all actually, and he's not that sensitive to rejection.
namari
reader's crush: namari wouldn't really know how to react, honestly, she's never given the idea of someone having a crush on her much thought, she won't care much about rejecting the reader, at least she's honest.
namari's crush: her crush will be a bit hard to spot but when it comes to you, there will be a notable soft spot, she treats you like everyone else and isn't afraid to scold you if you do something wrong.
shuro | toshiro nakamoto
reader's crush: in an au where he still has feelings for falin, he immediately rejects you, telling you boldly that his heart is for falin and falin alone, but lets go to an au where he either loses interest in her or doesn't like her at all; definitely flattered, someone liking him (back) isn't unheard of but it is... nice?
shuro's crush: just look at what he does with falin, he will propose to you at some point, of course when time goes by and he starts to fall for you harder and harder, until he just can't contain it anymore.
izutsumi
reader's crush: very, very strange, someone having a crush on her is.. almost unheard of, or she doesn't pay much attention, anywho, she doesn't know... how to react? she knows what to do if she doesn't return the feelings but... someone liking her is just weird lmao.
izutsumi's crush: she won't make it obvious.... or try to at least, she accepts affection from you much more than she does from the others and sticks by your side more.

Hi
It's been brought to my attention that there are people out there who are sadly plagiarising my work again.
1. This is not okay.
To clarify, while I'm very happy for people to take inspiration from my stories (in the same way you might any book you read from a bookshop), I don't want my work used or reposted without credit.
I'm not going to go into lengths on why it is wrong to plagiarise someone else's writing. I don't think my tumblr post is magically going to change anyone's mind, especially as if you've followed me long enough you know we've done this rodeo before.
So.
2. How to tell when writing is plagiarised
It can be very difficult to tell when something is plagiarised, especially if we have never come across the original work before and have no reason to recognise it.
I don't think it's realistic for everyone to vet everything they come across online for plagiarism, but it's also something I don't see talked about a lot for fiction.
These questions to ask yourself are not foolproof and not applicable to everything. But I think they can be a start.
If the writer has posted more than one story, is there a similarity across them? While writing style can change across an author's different pieces, there is still usually going to be a similar feel across stories if they came from the same person. Writers have voices and quirks and little things that are specific to them. If every piece feels wildly different then it might be coming from different places. This is probably going to come down to gut reaction and instinct in the first instance. But that's okay. Because that gut reaction is just there to make you think twice and maybe investigate more thoroughly.
How much are they posting? Can people churn an extraordinary amount of words out? Yes, sometimes. But...as a general ballpark, no. Writing takes time and effort. If someone is coming out with enormous amounts of writing every day or week or month or whatever, then this can be a hint to look a little closer.
Do you ever see hints of their writing process? Can the writer talk about their characters or what they want out of the story or anything like that? Do they ever post a story organically in response to a request or whatever? Not all writers know in-depth everything about their story or characters or plot, but the main point here is that the finished product is the tip of the iceberg. If someone is a writer than there is more going on beneath the surface of the posted stories.
I hope this helps!
#writing#plagiarism#ai is a problem but it's one built on the disregard of people#plagiarizing#writing community

Part 2 of MK1 men pushing the reader to a wall while kissing them, please? đ
i mean i GUESS i can do that đ¤ since you asked so nicely! part one here
how liu kang, reiko, sub-zero, havik, johnny cage, scorpion, and geras go about pushing reader to the wall while kissing them
just know it may not show the long pauses i took while writing this but know IT HAPPENED!! THE THINGS I DO FOR YALLđŤľđždon't say i never did noneđŤ
havik's regeneration mentioned. i've also been told havik looks like that on purpose so like, let's act like he can make his face go back to where it was for the sake of shits, giggles, and pandering XD
tags: @luna18night20 @momopad
warnings: suggestive, fluff elements, sphinx tried her best, there will not be a part 3 im sorry y'all đ BUT shao and kenshi are here
Liu Kang
Liu Kang was rarely ever rough with you. In fact, the only way he'd do it is if you either verbally say it's fine, or if he knows you're poking the bear just to get a reaction. And when you get a reaction...there's no going back. You've kissed with your back to the wall several times, and every time was gentle and loving and laced with care. However, if you've presented that you were that desperate for him to give you the attention you deserve, he will gladly be a little rougher in pushing you back with his lips on yours. Just be prepared for him to leave some handprints on your waist.
Reiko
Reiko is a warrior. Hardened by battle and discipline, so the way he kisses you usually starts off that way. He can't help it. Not only is it the way he was raised and what he was told a man is "supposed to be", but it also came with how his partners were to be treated. When it came to you his sense of duty and protection spiked every single time. So here you were, well within his unintentional bear hug as your back was against the wall. His kisses always started off like he was going away to war/fight (because he usually was) but he would eventually melt and become smoother because you're by his side.
Sub-Zero
Bi-Han, a truly complex character. I believe that whoever captures his heart will be the main obsession in his life. In this case, it is you. He constantly needs to be on you, around you, see you, hear you, you name it. He can't get enough of your lips and this is especially apparent the way he's almost always pushing you to the wall while kissing you. Can we blame him? He's a tall hunk of touch-starved and the only thing that will satiate that hunger is roughly making out with you every chance he gets all while still knowing how to treat you like a porcelain antique.
Havik
Havik...this guy. Even though I'm pretty sure it's not canon I still feel like he'd regenerate and degenerate for fun and for different purposes/occasions. For the sake of my sanity I can say I found him fine as hell before his face got fucked up, and so did you. But you don't mind him either way because you love his crazy ass. Allow me to set the scene: You say something snappy to get his attention and boom...he regenerates his facial wounds just to back you against the wall and shut you up with pure smugness and arrogance behind his kiss. But, this is what you wanted, nonetheless. And you'd do it again!
Johnny Cage
Who's to say Johnny Cage wouldn't try to get you in one of his films just so he could keep getting takes of him backing you to a wall and kissing you? For Elder God's sakes, he's the one who wrote the script! And of course it's something dramatic like him being a villain that captures the hero and tries to convince them to ditch their position to be with him. Dude would totally think he's Loki (did i say that bc i think it would be hot if Loki did that to me? ..don't worry about it!) He's for sure fucking up his takes on purpose and you know this, but you only pretend to be irritated and maybe even fuck up a few yourself.
Scorpion
Kuai Liang, the romantic this man is. Like Liu Kang, he's never rough with you. Except it would take a little more convincing to let him know it's fine for him to act on his feelings when he wants to. With him, his kisses are slow and gentle. They will always start off like that even if he has a hard day. All he wants is to hold you, but it's like whenever your back hits the wall a gear starts turning in his brain. The idea of you having nowhere to go and enjoying it? Not even an Elder God is pulling him from your embrace. He gets handsy and a lot more affectionate around this time; he's kissing your face, neck, and shoulders too, because why the hell not?
Geras
Geras is a special case. He's an immortal who has never experienced romantic love before. So naturally you will have to teach him some things and even point out things he has observed that can be taken as romantic love. But he's still a man who has seen a lot, so this guy knows what kissing is and how to kiss. Surely you didn't think this giant fine ass immortal being didn't know how to treat his partner? Crazy talk! Understand that when you introduce the classic wall kiss by showing him what to do, he's leaning in to kiss you as he lifts you in his arms with no effort to be found and there won't be kissing going on much longer!
a/n: thanks for reading and i hope you enjoyed! collapses onto the ground

Reo Mikage is Actually Great BPD Representation- Some Thoughts
So I had the extremely unfortunate experience of being exposed to Blue Lock (unfortunate because it's all my tiny pea brain can think about now), and while it is absolutely full of silly guys whose brains I want to pick, this little bugger really stood out to me. The second he came onto the screen, I KNEW I smelled the borderline on him. As I watched the series and read the manga, I noticed he is actually an incredibly well-written depiction of someone struggling with BPD. Reo is a super layered character and my favorite hobby is picking apart those layers and yapping incessantly about them, so here we are. I want to write this analysis for a few reasons:
1.) Too many people misunderstand Reo and categorize him as dramatic or childish without any elaboration and he deserves a proper character deep-dive. I think him being borderline explains a LOT of his reactions/choices throughout the story.
2.) Borderline representation is extremely important to me. I'm diagnosed borderline and have struggled with this disorder for around ten years now, so I get really excited when I spy BPD-coded characters (especially if they're likable people and not just ghoulish irredeemable villains or manic pixie dream girl characters). This disorder can be so isolating, especially when the majority of people will never even bother to research or understand it. I know that some people like to chalk Reo's emotional reactions up to him being a moody 17-year-old, but I think I have enough evidence to prove that this is undiagnosed BPD that's festering in his noggin. Not to mention, literally nobody else acts like this in the series. Reo is incredibly unique and distinct in the way he behaves through this narrative and I think it's way past the point of normal teenage angst. Regardless, believe what you want. He'll always be my borderline princess tho <3
3.) I have a master's degree in English and what good is that if I don't write long, painful, pointless essays on anime guys? Not that this is exceptionally well written, I just like to laugh at myself for getting a whole M.A and then this is the shit I publish online lmao
By the end of this, I hope I can shed some light on wtf is going on inside of Reo's silly little head. (I'm also obviously not a psychologist, don't use any of this to diagnose yourself pls I don't need the scandal)
If you want to read, buckle up, because this is gonna be a long one!
First, let me define BPD- It's a personality disorder characterized by a long-standing pattern of instability in mood, interpersonal relationships, and self-image. At its core, it is a disorder categorized by emotional dysregulation (the inability to regulate one's emotional responses) People with BPD feel everything EXTREMELY hard. That's important to keep in mind IMO, because while their reactions may seem dramatic or extreme, what they're feeling IS dramatic and extreme. Everything they're feeling is amplified, so their reactions are amplified. Obviously from the outside, people assume it's an overreaction since they can't see what's going on inside the borderline's head. When you sit down and dissect the thought process of someone like Reo, it becomes a lot easier to understand why they react the way that they do to certain situations.
(Also, I'm not going to reiterate more than once that an explanation is not an excuse to treat people poorly. I cannot read ANYTHING on BPD without hearing every 2 minutes how the disorder isn't an excuse to hurt other people. We get it!! I'm explaining it, not excusing it. This enter essay is an analysis of why someone acts the way they do, not whether or not it's excusable)
So then, what behaviors/signs does somebody need to exhibit to receive a borderline diagnosis? The 9 diagnostic criteria for BPD are as follows:
1. Fear of abandonment
2. Unstable or changing relationships
3. Unstable self-image; struggles with identity or sense of self
4. Impulsive or self-damaging behaviors
5. Suicidal behavior or self-injury
6. Varied or random mood swings
7. Constant feelings of worthlessness or sadness
8. Problems with anger, including frequent loss of temper or physical fights
9. Stress-related paranoia or loss of contact with reality
Someone would only need 5 of these to receive a proper diagnosis. Just with the main story and the spin-off manga that is currently released, I think I have enough evidence to argue that Reo has 8 out of 9 criteria for a BPD diagnosis. For the sake of organization, Iâm gonna group some of those together though, indicated by a + symbol. I also want to define a few important terms before I start yapping, so that y'all without BPD can understand wtf I'm even talking about.
Favorite Person (fp) - This is someone who holds massive significance in a borderline's life. They emotionally depend on this person a lot and to a certain extent, their worldview almost revolves around them.
Splitting- the change in perception of someone or something caused by black-or-white thinking or dichotomous thinking. It is the devaluation of someone who was once idealized and vice versa.
Mirroring (aka: the chameleon effect)- the constant, unconscious change in one's identity or sense of self by imitating another personâs behaviors, characteristics, or traits. It is common in people who have a vacant or distorted self-image which is a general symptom of BPD.
Now, time for me to break down the most prominent moments where Reo showcases borderline behavior. As I mentioned, I'm going to try and organize this under each criteria point (with some being grouped together)
Unstable self-image; struggles with identity or sense of self:
Before I delve into Reo's relationships, I want to start with his baseline sense of identity. Itâs established early on that Reo is a very bored, empty, unsatisfied person. Nothing excites him, nothing motivates him, and everything is handed to him. Heâs frustrated because his parents notoriously try and buy his affection even though he doesn't want anything. For most of his life up until the narrative starts, he's wandering through life empty and frustrated. That is, until he finally sets his sights on soccer and decides to dedicate his life to winning the World Cup:
The wording, 'proves my existence' is interesting here. I think this is the first instance Reo has felt alive. So far, the only notable thing about him has been his family and his money. He hasn't achieved anything exceptional for himself, but now he has that opportunity. With this goal, he can really build something up from nothing and make it his own. It's almost like he's clinging to this dream to prove that he has some purpose in his life other than being the family heir.
Now, this dream changes when he meets Nagi, of course. I'm not gonna focus too much on their relationship in this section, but I will mention that meeting Nagi shifted Reo's entire dream, and not for the better. Through the narrative, his dream went from:
Winning the World Cup
Winning the World Cup with Nagi
Proving to Nagi that leaving him behind was a mistake
Improving himself and becoming a good striker on his own
Being a tool for Nagi to become the best striker
Had Nagi not come in and ask for Reo to come back to him, I think Reo could have done a great job at establishing his own sense of identity without Nagi. But no matter how much he works on himself, with Nagi in the picture, he's never going to value himself more than Nagi. Reo lets Nagi cloud his identity to the point where Isagi calls him out and asks what he's even doing at Blue Lock in the first place, since he clearly can't survive on his own, he needs Nagi with him.
After dealing with the turmoil of being abandoned by Nagi, Reo goes through a few stages. He starts with wanting to become somebody worthy of being beside Nagi, somebody that Nagi would want to choose. Devoting himself to becoming stronger and more versatile, his end goal is to have Nagi realize he made a mistake by leaving him behind. After a few more matches, Reo starts to realize that he needs to grow and change and become a stronger, better version of himself for himself and not for other people.
He decides that the fight was all his fault to begin with, that he should have never forced Nagi to play soccer and now he is going to get back to what his dream was originally, combined with his new desire to be a stand-alone player (and person, for that matter). Reo accepts the mistakes that he made, admits that he shouldn't have forced his ideals onto Nagi, and resolves to become a better person for HIMSELF. That's excellent!
Of course, Reo can't be happy for TOO long. Nagi comes out of the woodwork saying that he can't beat Isagi on his own and asks for Reo's help. Reo does stand up for himself a bit, saying that Nagi is being inconsiderate of his feelings and mentioning how long it took for him to recover from Nagi leaving. Now, the BPD trait here is how Reo not only forgives Nagi and is jumping on him and hugging him THE NEXT PAGE, but he also just disregards everything he said in this sequence. In a matter of two minutes, he no longer wants to be a player that can fight on his own or improve for himself, he wants to improve for Nagi. He starts ruminating again about how hurt he was when Nagi left, but now he's saying all of it wasn't so that he could get stronger individually, it was so that he could be reunited with Nagi again. Nagi asking for his help and saying that now they can play together again motivate Reo more than anything we've seen so far. (Nagi notoriously throws Reo little affection crumbs like this that Reo eats up, but I'm not trying focus on that) Now, Reo's alright with being a tool for Nagi's success again. Everything that happened was supposed to make him stronger so he could be a better partner to Nagi, right? Reo also says as the chapter ends, to please let him be a part of Nagi's dream until Nagi becomes the world's best striker. That's literally so sad!
He's also immediately back to the 'our' 'we' 'us' talk as well. If he can master his chameleon style in order to keep Nagi above the rest of the players, he wont get left behind again. If he devotes his time and energy into being a solo striker like the rest of these guys, Reo knows that he wont be able to keep up. This was always supposed to be his role, right? Building Nagi up to his full potential! :*)
I also like the detail that Reo is back to hugging Nagi and holding him, but Nagi never really touches him back. I think Reo's love language is touch for sure, not that it's incredibly relevant, but I do think it shows that Reo is back to being 100% comfortable around Nagi as if their fight never happened. I hear a lot of fans asking how Reo could have forgiven Nagi so easily, and I say this with my entire chest, it's the BPD. The black-and-white thinking combined with Nagi being Reo's fp and the excruciating pain of being abandoned by him in the first place ?? Of course he's going to take him back. Also, I've seen people blame Reo for not saying no to Nagi when he asks for help and I have to say that is an absolutely insane take. How are we gonna look at a panel where Nagi asks for help and then blame Reo for helping him?? I'm not going to focus on it too much in this post but in my opinion, it is crazy how little accountability both the narrative + fans give Nagi. Reo is pegged as responsible for both of their downfalls and it's nuts tbh.
Currently in the story, I think Reo's identity is still centered around Nagi. It's really easy for borderlines to structure their entire lives and personalities around their favorite person, but I can only hope that these two keep having open and honest discussions with one another. Hopefully, Reo will eventually learn that he can exist without Nagi and that he's more than just 'his arms and legs'.
Unstable or Changing Relationships:
The most notable relationship in Reo's life is Nagi. They're both each other's first real friends, which already sets up a less-than-ideal dynamic. Nagi has no idea how to communicate and he has pretty weak emotional intelligence. On the other hand, Reo is great at communicating, but he isn't used to regulating his emotions. For a lot of borderlines, they can go a very long time without experiencing any symptoms when they don't have a favorite person. When you think about it, the bulk of the disorder is shown through those interactions with other people. If Reo has never had a real friend in his life, I don't think he'd be used to the emotional turmoil that comes with having a fp.
The minute Reo meets Nagi, he's attached. All his classmates notice it, too. They question why Reo is suddenly so obsessed with this random kid who has no interest in him. Reo is ignoring everybody that isnt Nagi.
Very quickly, Reo boils down his view of the world to being him and Nagi versus everybody else, and he makes that very clear. It also depicts something that I think is incredibly crucial to Reoâs character that a lot of people overlook; as Nagi develops to be Reoâs favorite person, Reoâs dream isnt âplaying soccerâ anymore. Itâs Nagi. Itâs being with Nagi, playing soccer with Nagi, being useful to Nagi, taking care of Nagi, and being somebody important to Nagi. He doesnt teach Nagi the rules or how to actually play, he teaches Nagi how to play with him. He literally re-writes and re-structures the game so that it can center around him and Nagi. Nagi calls him out on this in the spin-off manga:
Reo doesnt care about the structure of the game, he cares about Nagi. The other people on the field don't matter. The other team doesn't matter. He also starts to unknowingly put Nagi up on a pedestal, which is another borderline trait. He starts reiterating that Nagi is special, he's different from everybody else, he's destined to achieve great things. The more he raises Nagi up, the more he isolates the two of them in his mind, reiterating the idea that it's them against everybody else. His language reflects this too: Reo exclusively talks with 'us' 'we' 'our', insinuating that they're going to do everything together.
When Ego says that there can't be two winners, Reo says that he'll make Nagi the best striker. His 'ego' will be making Nagi successful. Along with putting Nagi on this pedestal, Reo also very early on establishes the fact that he'd pick Nagi over himself any day of the week. He's the only person in Blue Lock who really couldn't care less about becoming a striker himself: his dream is to be a tool in Nagi's success. Or, in simpler terms, he wants to be useful and make Nagi happy.
These two were in trouble from the very beginning. Nagi is lazy as all hell, has 0 motivation to do anything, and his dream is to live a life of luxury and never have to work. Reo, being the borderline baddie that he is, is more than happy to do EVERYTHING for Nagi. Borderlines love extremely hard! It's one of our best traits and I think it's important to showcase that Reo is a massive sweetheart at his core. He clearly loves Nagi a lot and goes to extreme lengths to make sure he feels taken care of. To someone with BPD, NOTHING is too big of an ask for a person they love, especially if that person is their fp. I also disagree with the argument that Reo 'made' Nagi codependent. Nagi likes being taken care of, he says it all the time. If you ask me, I would actually argue that Nagi takes advantage of Reo a little bit because he knows that Reo will do anything for him. But regardless, I think that Reo starts to develop an unspoken expectation with Nagi that he'll provide him with everything he needs, and in turn, Nagi will stick around. I don't think he's doing this intentionally, nor do I think it's being done in a manipulative way. I just think that Reo has a dormant fear of being abandoned that he doesn't totally know he has yet.
It isn't just Nagi that Reo showcases having unstable relationships with, though. Zantetsu is another good example. Reo starts out disliking Zantetsu, he snaps at him a couple times, and calls him a moron more than once. He starts to warm up to him because Nagi tells him to. The favorite person has MASSIVE sway in the borderline's life. If Nagi likes someone, Reo likes them too. (This is, of course, on the condition that they aren't a threat, looking at you Isagi).
In the immediate next chapter, Reo is acting like they're all best friends. He's climbing on top of them in their big bed, saying that the three of them are gonna win their matches, being a little pookie. He goes from not liking this guy at all to considering him one of his close friends super fast. Also on the topic of Isagi, when they're making up the teams for the second selection, Nagi doesn't initially want to tell Reo that he wants Isagi on their team bc he's worried Reo will be upset. But, when he does finally say it, Reo is literally fine with it because like I said, who Nagi likes, Reo likes! On the condition that they don't replace Reo, which clearly happened soon after.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, Reo also shows how he can go from loving someone to despising him very quickly. After Chigiri and Kunigami tell him to get back up in the game post-Nagi's abandonment, we can literally see the switch flip in Reo's head:
Suddenly, he hates Nagi. Nagi's a jerk who abandoned him; he never cared about him, and he threw him away. Dude literally says "Let's kill the bastards that betrayed us". This act of unintentional devaluing is called splitting. What Reo's essentially doing is going from one extreme to the other: if Nagi isn't his perfect treasure, he's the devil that broke his heart. There's no room for a grey area. The reasoning behind borderline's developing this black-and-white mindset is rooted in self-defense. If Reo devalues Nagi into being nothing more than a traitor, then he's stripping away the power that Nagi has to hurt him. If he looks at him like a rival or a villain, it's protecting him from being hurt by Nagi again.
That doesn't mean that he genuinely believes any of this, more so, he's trying to convince himself that it's true. We see that at his core, the reason he's acting like this is because he's hurt. I'll go more into it later on, but he's constantly thinking, what does Isagi have that I don't? What do I have to do in order to win Nagi back? This black-and-white thinking is an automatic self-defense mechanism that I think he's doing subconsciously. Regardless, the shifting he's doing here can cause a little whiplash, which brings me to:
Varied or random mood swings + Problems with anger, including frequent loss of temper or physical fights:
I canât think of a better way to describe Reo's temperament than the wiki, so let me quote it: "Generally, he seems to feel every emotion with full force and is extremely aware of his own faults and shortcomings, which is evident in several instances of painful breakdowns shown in the spin-off manga. Due to his high emotionality, he can even get violent when he loses his temper."
Reo is characterized as being emotionally unstable. When he's happy, he's elated! When he's sad, he's miserable. There are a ton of scenes between the manga and spin-off manga that show how fast his emotions can flip, but this one was one of my personal favorites:
In this scene, Reo has developed a little scheme in the dining hall where the guys are trading their side dishes. At face value, a throwaway moment. But, I think it's worth looking at because not only does this show Reo's emotional response being triggered in an opposite, semi-extreme direction, but the root cause for the reaction was that he felt rejected by Zantetsu. In his own weird way, he's asking Zantetsu to come over and hang out with him. He's not being exceptionally clear with that message, but I can still pick up on it. "You wanna join in, don't you?" He's extending the invite, making himself vulnerable, and Zantetsu shoots him down by saying nah, I'm fine with my noodles. Reo JUMPS on him like YOU KNOW WHAT? I TOOK THAT PERSONALLY! lol. Jokes aside, I think this moment is a great one to argue Reo's BPD tendencies because it's such a seemingly mundane interaction. Even Zantetsu is surprised by Reo's random outburst. This also sets up the fact that one of Reo's most obvious triggers is being rejected/abandoned/betrayed, an extremely common one between those of us with BPD.
Other instances of Reo having a bad temper are a lot more obvious. In the match against teams V and Z, Reo straight up elbows Raichi in the throat, and then tries to go throw hands with Kuon for hurting Nagi. He only stops because if he gets into any more fights, heâll get thrown out of the game and won't be able to play with Nagi anymore. Heâs visibly pissed though and calls Team Z a joke. Hell, even Reo himself can recognize on a certain level that he can't control his emotions: they control him. They cloud his judgment and make him react in ways that he wish he didn't.
He is constantly plagued by these extreme emotional reactions that are out of his control. Not to say that people with BPD are unable to ever control their emotions, because we can! It takes time and therapy and practice though, which Reo hasn't had. His lack of regulation is also why he has such a dramatic and extreme meltdown when Nagi abandons him.
Fear of Abandonment:
Reo's biggest trigger and the cause of his inner turmoil throughout Blue Lock is his fear of abandonment. I mentioned before that I think he's had this fear dormant inside of him for a while as so many borderlines do, since he hasn't had the chance to experience it before. He alludes to it early on when they first arrive at Blue Lock:
The thought of leaving Nagi for somebody else? Reo considers that heartless. They came together, after all. They're going to win the world cup together. Nagi could break both of his legs and Reo wouldn't leave him, because again, Reo isn't there to team up with the best player and become the best striker in the world: he's there to play with Nagi!! And, like I said, in Reo's mind it's him and Nagi vs everyone else-
Reo exhibits a lot of signs early on of being jealous while they're playing in Blue Lock. I mean, as we discussed, everything should be focused around him and Nagi. When Nagi passes to Zantetsu in the team V and Y match, Reo pulls up like 'hey, why didn't you pass it to me?? ):' There are a lot of little moments like that, but Reo's jealousy is a lot more relevant to my argument after he gets abandoned by Nagi.
Let's talk about that word: abandoned. It seems dramatic, right? Reo uses that term constantly and exclusively. Every time he brings that moment up, he uses the word 'abandoned', or he'll say 'betrayed' or 'chose'. These are very definitive words. Heâs not saying Nagi ditched him or flaked on him or blew him off, no; he has abandoned him. That word choice may seem disproportionate to the situation, but that's Reo's reality. This was the ultimate betrayal to him. The constant use of that vocabulary reiterates that in Reo's mind, there is no grey area. Either Nagi chooses him, or he chooses someone else. In choosing someone else, he abandons Reo. Reo is paranoid that Nagi isn't ever going to come back to him and it's because of something that Reo is lacking. How can Nagi like Isagi more than him, anyway?
Now, I do fault Nagi a bit for not communicating better at that moment. I understand that he's bad at communication, but I don't think Reo could have been more obviously upset if he tried. The dude was in TEARS. Nagi saw him devastated and then expected everything to be fine when he met him in the bathhouse? Idk. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he didn't realize it would upset Reo to such an extreme: maybe he thought that they would miss each other, but Reo wouldn't take it personally. I'm doing my best not to harp on Nagi since this is about Reo.
Abandonment is detrimental to people with BPD. It causes extreme inner turmoil that we see with Reo as the story progresses because it is the only thing he can think about. If he isn't trying to cover up his hurt feelings with this idea of revenge, he's self-destructing over being abandoned. He becomes obsessed with wondering why Nagi chose Isagi over him. Was there something wrong with him? Isagi isn't that impressive, why would Nagi rather be with him? These thoughts torture him endlessly and fuel his desire to 'steal' Nagi back. He literally says to Isagi, that he's going to steal Nagi back. Much to his dismay though, Reo starts to notice that Isagi is bringing out some positive traits in Nagi. Nagi's entire vibe is different with Isagi. Nagi is having fun playing soccer without Reo. In fact, he's having more fun. He's making plays he's never made before. His face is visibly different; he's more excited than before.
This is heartbreaking for Reo. Not only was he right that Isagi did have something to offer Nagi that he couldn't, but Reo is having a massive self-hate spiral during this point as well, so he's internalizing all of his flaws and mistakes while the thought is sitting in the back of his head: did Nagi actually have a good reason for abandoning me? Was I not enough to satisfy him? Did I only drag him down? This gets significantly worse the longer he watches Nagi and Isagi play:
Everything is falling apart. Nagi is doing completely fine without Reo, and Reo is an absolute mess. We're circling back to Reo's lack of identity here as well. He's watching firsthand that he's losing Nagi to Isagi: what does he do? What happens to him if he loses Nagi, who is he without Nagi? He's overwhelmed during this match and at one point Reo literally screams that he's going to tear apart their connection. Jealousy is consuming him, but it's also those feelings of inferiority and wondering if he really did deserve to be abandoned. If Nagi is so happy without him, maybe he really did have a reason. These are the thoughts that are circling around in Reo's head. Not to mention, he is constantly tortured by the flashbacks of Nagi leaving him, which I think is a great detail. Some readers might say it's just pointless recapping but I disagree, I think it's depicting how traumatic that was for Reo. As a borderline, being abandoned by your fp IS traumatic. Reo relives that moment so many times because so many things trigger it for him throughout Blue Lock. He can't even look at Chigiri and Kunigami without thinking about him and Nagi. It's a really devastating experience that quickly deteriorates him emotionally.
Constant feelings of worthlessness or sadness + Suicidal behavior or self-injury:
One of my favorite things about Reo is the fact that he is self-aware that he's behaving somewhat irrationally, but he doesn't know how to stop. When we look at one of the several times that Reo is curled up crying over Nagi, he mentions how he really did want to tell Nagi to go and have fun, but he didn't. He couldn't. The visuals shift for this too:
Reo doesnt want to be acting this way, but he can't help it, and that's frustrating to him. It makes him start feeling ashamed of himself. His inner thoughts start to spiral and he feels weak and alone. He's reflecting here on what his true feelings really were at that moment, and how scared and lonely and weak he felt as a result of Nagi leaving him behind.
These feelings quickly evolve into Reo feeling worthless and falling into bouts of self-hatred. He's so ashamed of the way he's feeling and behaving but it feels so out of his control. He says, "maybe if I hadn't gone to Blue Lock in the first place, I wouldn't have to experience this feeling." As I said before, borderline's feel things EXTREMELY intensely; the disorder is described as living with third-degree burns all over your body. Everything hurts. His feelings are so intense and all-consuming right now, it's all he can think about:
I saw some posts in the fandom reddit asking why Reo is acting like this. One in particular reads: "I get that he is betrayed and stuff but he is acting like itâs the end of the world, is it explained later why he acts like this? Is it because he doesnât think he can win without Nagi?" Not to call this person out, I just want to answer the question in this post-
It has nothing to do with winning; it was never about winning. It was always about Nagi.
If we're looking at Reo through the borderline lens, it IS the end of the world for him. Nagi was his world. What's worse, he's fully aware that he's not acting rationally and he doesn't know why, which is making him feel ashamed and weak and embarrassed. Now I know why he's acting like this, but there are no Blue Lock psychiatrists sitting around to wack him with the mood stabilizers or the DBT handbook, so he's gonna stay feeling like a monster.
He lets these thoughts, along with the resentment and anger from being abandoned in the first place, fuel him for the second selection match. As he's watching the game play out, as Nagi is about to score the winning goal, Reo's mind starts racing with intrusive, negative thoughts.
He's praying that Nagi fails, that he gives up, that he stops trying, anything to stop that solidifying moment where he scores the winning goal and proves once and for all that not only was Reo not strong enough to stop him, but Nagi doesn't need him anymore. He catches himself really quickly, because he realizes he's sounding just like his parents. Everything is spinning out of control so bad, Reo wants Nagi to end up in a vulnerable position so that he isn't the only one falling apart. As he catches himself thinking this, he's disgusted with himself. He calls himself 'utter trash', and as he watches Nagi score the winning goal, he falls to his knees, wishing he was dead.
As he sits there decomposing in emotional turmoil and suicidal ideation, Nagi's team chooses Chigiri to join them, and it's the nail in the coffin. This is probably Reo's lowest point in the entire story IMO. Nagi comes up to compliment him on his plays and Reo shows us another classic borderline move: he's anticipating how bad it's going to hurt to be abandoned by Nagi again, so he's trying to push him away before it can happen. We see the dichotomy of his spoken words and inner thoughts here, where he's talking big game to Nagi, saying things like 'you clearly don't care about me anymore, you're throwing me away, if you're going to abandon me just do it properly', while internally he's thinking 'I'm the worst, I wish I was dead, please take this bait and break my heart so that I can self destruct in peace'.
i LOVE the visuals during this moment. This is what Reo thinks is his last line of defense, the last thing he can do to preserve any part of his dignity is to make Nagi hate him so that he'll stop throwing these crumbs of affection at him. It's also really telling that despite his switch in behavior and the devaluing of Nagi, the root of all of that is STILL that he was so hurt by the abandonment.
I don't think I need to analyze the suicidal ideation because he just straight up says he wants to die like three times in this scene but, aside from that, the visual of his inner thoughts vs what he's actually saying is so powerful. Not to mention the chameleon imagery which i'll geek out about in a second, this is another example of his black and white thinking along with the reiteration that being abandoned was literally traumatic for Reo: he says they can never go back to what they were before. Speaking as a borderline, this is painfully true. When people break my trust even in a small way, I can never view them the same as I used to. I can forgive them and let it go, but I'll never be as open with them as I once was. In Reo's shoes, he had Nagi up on this pedestal that he was perfect and would never do anything to hurt him, but he did hurt him (in the worst way possible).
After Nagi tells him he's a pain in the ass and that he doesn't care anymore, Reo thanks him for 'finishing him off'. In his mind, they're done now and he can suffer in peace and quiet without dragging Nagi down anymore.
Bonus Point: The Chameleon Effect
I LOVE THE FACT THAT HIS THING IS CHAMELEONS AHHHH
The chameleon imagery with Reo makes me INSANE dude. As I mentioned towards the beginning of this post, a part of borderline that is seldom talked about is the tendency to take on 'the chameleon effect', or mirror the people around them. REO'S ENTIRE THING IS CHAMELEONS LIKE BFFR ?? That image where he was trying to get Nagi to hate him, was before he even started using his chameleon style, it was just something the authors thought was necessary to include during Reo's mental breakdown. Aside from the cool imagery, his chameleon style is a reflection of his relationship with Nagi. He gets called a jack of all trades and a master of none early on in reference to how when heâs without Nagi, hes not really exceptional at anything. He never really took the time to master one specific thing because he was always so concerned with helping Nagi. This rings my BPD bell for a couple reasons: first of all, when you have no sense of identity and youâre worried it means you have no real personality ?? Steal one!! Take the closest person to you and copy that one. Thatâs something us baddies know VERY well. Also, think thereâs something about you that your fp doesnât like? Change it! You can morph into anything they want as long as it means they wonât leave you !! :*) Before he makes up with Nagi, he copies moves in hopes that it'll make him stronger and appear more desirable to Nagi. After they make up, he copies whoever he has to so that he can get Nagi to that goal and make himself useful, make himself somebody that Nagi wants to have around. It is a literal direct metaphor for him changing anything and everything about himself for Nagi and graaaahhhh itâs so cool
Reonagi ?? Some thoughts-
I want to close this yap session with my thoughts on Reonagi as a ship. I do think that they can work and I want to make that clear. I'm not on board with the 'borderlines arent capable of having loving and fulfilling relationships' crap. That being said, they both have to put in a bit of effort. Reo has already recognized a lot of his own issues. He admits that he was wrong for pushing his ideals onto Nagi, that he needs to let Nagi grow and be his own person, etc. Nagi really hasn't accepted any fault. I stand by the fact that Nagi needs to be more sensitive with Reo. Way too often when a relationship like this fails, all the blame is put on the one with borderline. I'm gonna be the outlier here and say that if Nagi cares about Reo, he needs to learn about Reo's triggers and be mindful of them. I'm not saying that since Reo is sensitive to abandonment that Nagi should just isolate himself from everybody else, but what I am saying is that when he's going to do something that doesn't involve Reo, he needs to learn how to communicate that he still loves and values Reo. "I'm gonna go play soccer with this person right now, but I haven't forgotten about our promise. When I come back, we can play together. I still love you and I'm not going to leave you for whoever tf I'm playing with rn." (sneaking that 'i love you' in bc like..they're literally canon at this point asdfghjkll) But, I do think that Nagi loves Reo and cares about him in his own way. The two of them just have to keep working on their communication skills. Nagi has the potential to have a hot rich husband who will literally bend over backward for him and buy him all the robux he could ever want, he's gotta put in a shred of effort!
I also like to think that Nagi didnât totally get the fact that Reo doesnât gaf about just playing soccer. Nagi thinks soccer is what they do together, itâs what makes reo happy, right? Heâs always pushing him to train harder and take the game more seriously because he likes the sport, RIGHT? It would make perfect sense to go play with isagi so that he can get better at soccer and come back to reo a more improved player. Maybe thatâs why he was surprised when Reo was so mad in the bathhouse, bc he wasnât making the connection that Reo cares more about him than soccer. That Reo puts all that energy into him playing soccer because he thinks itâs something that they can have as their own, and once Nagi notices how good he is, heâll start enjoying it and the two of them can hold hands and run around the soccer pitch!! I think Nagi missed that part tbh, and I donât think he know that even now in the story. Maybe Reo doesnât even notice it.
Anyway, a shameless plug to my reonagi playlist if that's your thing (i cooked with this one, i fear) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5CsvSqmuI4cxOl1nTaV4GJ?si=737a0f21e0bd482a
Closing Thoughts:
Reo is a bpd baddie and I love him very much. I think he's a sensitive guy with a lot of feelings who would benefit from taking time to work through his trauma and his emotions. I hope that he eventually is able to build an identity for himself that doesn't involve Nagi, but baby steps, I suppose. I think Reo is a great balance of positive and negative borderline traits and he reads as a really believable and sympathetic character. He is, however, definitely that friend that you have to slap to stop them from running back to their ex.
Jokes aside though, BPD can be extremely hard to live with, even more so when it's undiagnosed and untreated. If someone you love has BPD, take the time to read up on it and do your best to understand them. I promise you, it will mean the world to them.
If you managed to get this far, thank you for reading! This was a messy stream of consciousness and I appreciate your support by listening.

llilyrose spends her time analyzing aroace stuff. yay.
isat spoilers afoot
what i especially like about the way adrienne wrote mira's orientation is the lack of room for interpretation. yes they snuck aroace talk into fantasy france, but just stop and think for a minute. what would happen if mira just said "i'm aroace" or "i don't feel love the same way" instead of all the nuance we got to her character in the friend quest convo?
we know she's sex repulsed, we know she's romance repulsed. we know she loves fiction that has those things in it, loves interpreting fictional characters that way, but can't bare to see herself in that situation. it makes a lot of sense with regards to her location (vaugarde, a very sex-positive and romance-adamant country) and also with regards to herself (the way she feels about her environment). Of course she wouldn't blame other folk around her for engaging with their religion the "correct" way, of course she'd internalize all her feelings of being outcast and turn it back on herself.
The fandom respects this! Nobody ships her romantically, or sexually, because we know she's not into that. We know she would never and i know a bunch of people who would punch you for even thinking it!
Now what if Adrienne hadn't put this in the game? What if they had just said on their tumblr one day, "mira's aroace," or something. where would we be now? aspec shipping discourse would definitely take the reins. we'd have people shipping her in all kinds of different ways, bending the aroace character to the best of their ability because they could still be into sex, or romance, or whatever. this is TRUE, it's POSSIBLE, but there's no nuance. We wouldn't know the way Mira really feels about these things unless Adrienne told us, so a lot of people would either ignore/"work around" her identity or just wouldn't even know about it to begin with!
Introducing mira's orientation in the way adrienne did leaves no room for discourse. we know if she's sex-positive, sex-negative, how she reacted to finding out she was, etc. It provides so much more representation than a simple "I'm aroace" ever could. It's such a wide label, so finally having CONCRETE information about a canonical aroace's experiences with their orientation is so, so freeing and honestly quite refreshing. and it's worked into the story seamlessly!!!
She's not an emotionless carcass with no capacity for love, she's not outwardly detesting sex or romance at every possible moment, she's simply a well-rounded character who happens to be aroace. You have time to warm up to her before ever even finding out about her orientation! Or having any clue at all (barring maybe the suspicious sketches)!!!!! Aroace people are real!!! We're so real!!!!
Speaking of the suspicious sketches! We know siffrin's alloace (from, like, one line of dialogue), but we don't know if he's sex-repulsed. Adrienne's gone on record to say "aces can still have sex" in reference to siffrin, so I'm inclined to believe he has at least some sort of libido.
When looking at the sketches, both him and mira have a repulsed reaction. I think there are three possible reasons for Siffrin here!
Siffrin is sex-repulsed and has a visceral reaction to them because he thinks it's gross.
Siffrin has no libido because the stress overrides everything in his system. That combined with his ace identity would probably lead to a distaste for the papers.
Some people would NOT GET THE MEMO from the act 3 friendquest. Sometimes when you're writing you have to account for the gamers being really really dense. Some people didn't even understand the Isa friendquest was him coming out as trans basically. Since Ace characters are hard to "prove" unless they explicitly state they dislike sex, this line of dialogue might've just been there to drill it in that Siffrin is ace because the only other place we see that implication is one line in the friendquest. It could even have no tie to his relationship with sex, who knows?
one of these options is not like the others! /silly
I couldn't tell you which one of those it is, but i think at least one of them had to have hit the mark. It's a lot harder to decode siffrin's sexuality when we only get like 5 lines of dialogue total that vaguely even reference it
With this we come back to the issue from earlier: He could be demi, he could be ace, he could be sex-repulsed, he could not! Most people write them sex-repulsed and I'm personally on that bandwagon, but interpreting them a different way isn't any less correct unless you completely ignore the fact they're ace in the first place.
Even sex-positive aces have complicated relationships with sex. Some do it for the gratification, some simply have higher libido and can't think of a different way to get it out, and others only do it to please their partner.
I think writing an ace character as sex-positive should be seen as a character study instead of an excuse to ship two characters together. Is this character the type to even enjoy it in the first place? How often? How do they interact with it? Etc. Which I think is what Adrienne was talking about when she said "aces can still have sex." We don't know about siffrin's identity, we don't have a grasp on the nuance, but we do know he's ace and that he experiences love differently from the way mirabelle does, and the way isabeau does, and the way odile does, and what have you.
I love love love the representation we get in isat. An aroace, an alloace, and someone that a lot of fans headcanon as aroallo though it's unconfirmed. Even if Odile's not aro, we still get that line of dialogue about not finding romance suitable for her at the moment, which speaks true to a different experience altogether. No two characters experience love, experience life the same in isat. That's why i get to make a tumblr text post that's a bit too long exploring the different avenues adrienne took when writing the characters lol :')

Love
Requested by @angeltreesunshine (i don't take requests anymore btw). You didn't specify which characters but you did send the request on my overblot malleus blog so i included him. I also included kalim because he was the one i had most ideas for. I really hope you enjoy!
Cw: i realized half-way through i wasn't comfortable with writing yandere that aren't ocs or canon yanderes anymore so there's that, possibly ooc, yandere stuff, implied kidnapping, obsession, reader has a mental breakdown.
Reader is gender neutral

Love.
It's a wonderful feeling, right? To look at someone in the eyes and think "I wish to spend the rest of my life with them."
But you knew better. You knew the truth about it. How it clawed at your chest, ripping your heart to shreds. How it left you broken beyond repair. What a wretched thing.
So why did he have to come in? Why did he have to appear in your life, bringing in the doomed butterflies?
"Why....why..." you uttered between sobs, your legs giving in as you slid down the wall behind you. The deserted courtyard could only echo your words. Tears as black as ink(or was it really ink? You didn't really know or care at this point) rolled down your cheeks.
"I wish I could just erase my feelings... I'm not cut out for love... Why can't it just go away!?" You cried aloud
Not knowing he was there, hearing your every word.

Malleus Draconia
How intriguing you were. Unafraid of him but terrified of love, the very thing he longed for. Yes, how truly intriguing.
The sound of his heels resonated closer and closer to you until he was standing in front of you, his shadow cast over your crouching body. He kneeled down at your level.
"Well well well, what do we have here?" He whispered, placing a strand of loose hair behind your ear. You looked up quickly, confused and panicked. In your sorrow, you hadn't noticed him arriving. He gently wiped your tears away with his thumb, leaving a dark stain. He was smiling, but there was no warmth to it.
"Wh-what are you doing?!" you spoke out, voice hoarse from crying.
"Shh..." he answered simply.
He took you in his arms and stood up again. He grabbed your hand and put it on his cheek.
"Look at us, what poor souls we are. Doomed to a life of unfortunate affection. How better would it be if we lived it together?"
You protested:
"Don't say that. It would only make it worse. I'm not sharing my life with anyone, even id it's you."
Especially if it's you.
Malleus brought your hand to his heart, this time. You could feel it thumping even through his thick dorm uniform.
"Do you feel it beat? It beats for you, my dear. No matter what. No matter if you don't want me. But you do. You're only scared. You'll see we're meant to be."
Green lights started forming around the both of you. As it began to cover you entirely, he brought his face close to yours.
That night, you disappeared from Night Raven College. You would learn to love Malleus, and you would stay together for eternity.

Kalim Al-Asim
Afraid of love? How could that be possible?! Love was the best feeling in the world! It made you all warm and fuzzy inside. It made his body catch on fire whenever he saw you.
So when he witnessed you all broken down in tears on the ground... It made him ache. He just had to show you how beautiful it was!
After that night, his behavior changed oh-so slightly. His usual clinginess became even more overwhelming. He wanted to spend every minute with you, and he was always either hugging you or holding your hand. You would also get showered with all kinds of presents.
It made you more uncomfortable than ever. Your skin crawled everytime his fingertips were laid on you. Your body had a natural knee-jerking, stomach-churning reaction to his dreaded affection. You tried to avoid him as much as you could, but it never seemed to work. He would always find you, wherever, whenever.
If he kept on like this, you wouls get used to it, right? Just like how people cured their arachnophobia by looking at pictures of spiders. It would work, Kalim was sure of it.
And before you knew it, a golden cage had formed around you.

I hope you have a good day/night!

Can I pls request a BTS reaction? They have a crush on their friend who is not a celebrity, so they can't confess to her because of their reputation/job, but they are really close. One day someone from their company revealed a sensitive information about them. So, the members and the company accused her of it because they thought that she was only with them to become famous. They didn't believe her and also told her many hurtful things. But later it was revealed that it was not her but someone else and she was telling the truth. Later they try to reconcile with her and asks her to forgive them but it was too late. Can you please write it as angst?
If it's too specific for you, you don't have to write it. Thank you anyways âşď¸âşď¸
my first ask! thank you so much for sending this! my bts skills may be a tad bit rusty, so i'm sorry if this isn't up to par with your expectations. im doing allll the research i can! some things may be changed up a bit, but i'm trying to stick to your prompt the best that i can!
summary: forbidden love hurts, and it sometimes builds up frustration inside you, which then turns into flipping out on the person you love nonsensically solely because you're overwhelmed. they had to learn to think before they act, and, now, they're suffering from the consequences of their actions.
characters: just to test the waters and see if you like what i'm doing, i am only doing kim namjoon. if you like this, i will continue with the other members iâm comfortable writing! please tell me if i did well or was a lil' off. i'll always take constructive criticism:)
kim namjoon never meant to hurt anyone, but he especially made sure that he would not hurt you. he cares about you so much, to the point where seeing you even slightly sad could mess up his whole day.
you're bts's songwriter and producer, but also their friend. when they make plans, they want to include you, always. even if they go to the beach for a run bts episode, they want YOU to be there after the cameras are off. of course, every single member of the group wants you to be around, but namjoon insists on it. you're his safe place, the person he confides in when times get hard--why wouldn't he want you there?
"are you sure you don't want to come with us on this tour?" namjoon looks at you with full passion in his eyes. he wants you to come with them, even if he won't directly say it. "you know that we will always want you to come with, right?"
that little "we" always gets you every time. sure, you know that it's true, and so does he, but that's not what you want to hear and that's not what he wants to say. you want to hear him say "i want you to come with," but it feels like he refuses to say it. he's only not saying it because it'll make his feelings too real, and he can't deal with the reality that you can never be his.
"ah, i know, joonie... but i need to work on the ideas you all gave me for this next album. it's the final one before you all go on hiatus, so i can't take a break," you respond, playing with your bowl of ramen without eating it. you're the only two in the kitchen, and it's quiet. "i'd love to go, but i just can't afford to right now. you know i'm short on money."
namjoon sighs, but nods. "i understand. it's just gonna be hard to be on tour without you."
you send him a sweet smile, then giggle softly. "you're such a baby, did you know that?"
"it's our little secret, keep it hush."
that wasn't the secret that destroyed everything you've built with him over the past decade, but it was more of a foreshadow. you felt excited at the idea of having a secret with him, but also dread--this is silly, though. you guys have thousands of secrets. you're best friends, and you always have been, so why is your gut telling you to fight or fly?
around a week later, dispatch reports on news that namjoon has never told a soul about--except for you. the moment his brain processes the information told to him by the higher-ups, he immediately gets up from his seat and marches to your usual spot that you linger in.
"get out."
"huh?"
your face is full of pure confusion, a bit like a deer in headlights. sure, you've had your arguments and fights before, but he has never been this harsh off the bat--hell, he was rarely ever truly harsh.
the way his eyes look at you with pure disgust, and the sarcastic laugh he lets out... it feels like you don't know who's standing in front of you. yeah, it's namjoon, but... it's also not.
"i knew you were desperate for money, y/n, but i didn't think you'd be this desperate. if i knew you were like this, i would've fired you sooner."
"namjoon, what the hell are you talking about?" you stand up from your seat, yelling at him a bit. it's obvious you aren't even mad, you're just a mix of confused, scared, and worried.
"you know what i'm talking about, y/n. hell, the rest of the world does as well, since you decided to go to dispatch about it."
he holds up his phone so you can look at the site he pulled up. you scrolled and scrolled in pure shock, confusion, and disgust. "i... namjoon, i did not rat you out to anyone. why would i?"
"people like you only care about money. figure it out, and get out of this dorm."
absolutely stunned, you walk to the door in complete silence, then turn around. he looks a bit lost in thought, then he finally sees you. you, whose eyes are full of tears; you, whose cheeks are red due to how panicked you got from him yelling; and you, who refused to yell at him back even when he disrespected you.
while he was so sure he was right, a pit in his stomach grew larger. he feels like heâs doing something bad, something wrong, and he doesnât know why.
"i just want to say," you pause for a second, then continued. "if this is the real you, kim namjoon, maybe i should've been the one to expose you after all."
you slam the door.
months have passed, and you work at a local music store. sure, you write songs still, but they're not for anyone else except you. you refused to talk to all of them, talk about all of them, or even think about any of them. in your mind, bts disbanded the second he broke your heart, and your trust. truthfully, itâs unfair, as all the other members have texted you so many times and begged for a response, but you canât think of them without thinking of him.
the store is completely empty, so you're scrolling through every single social media app you have downloaded brainlessly. the words you're reading are not completely processing in your head at all, they kinda just look like funky shapes.
one title, though, caught your attention.
"kim namjoon talks about trust, compassion, and friendship in recent SEVENTEEN interview."
your jaw clenches, and you slam your phone down. your tears are threatening to come out, but you refuse to let yourself still be hurt by him. he doesn't deserve your time, your tears, your anything. that's, at least, what you keep trying to convince yourself of, anyways.
the bell at the door rings, and you try to regain your composure. you
"welcome to good vibes, home to all of the--"
you freeze. you don't know what to do, what to say, or how to even move. are you supposed to say anything? it's not like heâs saying anythingâhell, he has a mask over his face and a hood on his head, but you KNOW itâs him. now, heâs just staring at you blankly. youâre wearing a mask, so maybe thereâs a chanceâ
ây/n,â namjoon softly says your name, and your heart pangs against your chest. itâs a mix of heartbreak, anxiety, and all the leftover love you have for him. âi was looking for you.â
youâre so nervous, you could burst into tears. you want to hop over your desk and run into his arms and tell him how much you miss him, but also how much you hate him for hurting you so much. why do you still love a man that said such unforgivable words?
âwhy?â your words were a bit breathy, and you began to chuckle a bit while shaking your head. âthereâs nothing left to sayâunless, yâknow, youâre gonna tell me all i care about is money again because i have a job.â
âiâm sorry,â namjoon sighs, then walks to you. the desk separates you, but you wish you could fall into his arms. you keep your composure all the same, though.
âthat day, i was so stressed. it felt as if so many things were happening at once, and to know that a secret that i only told you got out⌠i felt so much betrayal all at once, i didnât want to hear you out. if iâm being completely vulnerable, i wanted to go cry,â he let out a small chuckle.
looking at you, your face was completely unreadable. itâs like you were thinking of so many things, but also of nothing at the same time. was he doing well? he doesnât know. heâs just going with what he feels in his heart.
âin my heart, i knew i shouldâve ran back to you and apologized; in my heart, i knew i shouldâve heard every single word you said, because you would never lie to me,â namjoon balls his hands into a fists, then looks at you in the eyes, âso iâm sorry it took so long for me to realize that i was wrong.â
the store was tense, and all you could hear is the music playing so softly in the background as you stare at him. heâs trying to read your expression, to see if thereâs any bit of leftover love in your eyes, but it just feels cold.
after a minute, you begin to laugh. itâs a full laughing attack, actually, and namjoon just stares. his heart dropped to the bottom of his stomach, because heâs not stupidâhe knows this means heâs fucked up.
âwhat, did you think was a kdrama, namjoon? did you think i was going to hear that apology, jump into your arms, and say, âoppa, never hurt me ever again!â or something?â you say these words while still laughing, and namjoon is still stunned. âwhat happened for you to come up here and say this to me? based on your new change in personality with⌠hating poor people and all, i canât imagine you just woke up one day and did it.â
âwe found who actually did it. it was our stylist, sooyoung.â
âso thatâs what it took for you to finally realize i was innocent? instead of thinking back ro everything you said to me and how hurt i was, it took them finding out the real person behind the crime for you to realize i was telling the truth?â
you slam your hand on the desk, and your body is trembling. youâre on an adrenaline rush, but youâre also sad, scared, and angry. namjoon notices this and places his hand on yours, like he always used to.
ây/n, youâre shaking, please caââ
âi donât give a fuck, namjoon,â you yell, and namjoon is completely frozen. âiâve known you since you were a trainee, and, yet, you still thought that i was some⌠freaky gold digger that would sell her friends out for money. do you know how much that hurts? to know that you think i have the potential to be like that?â
namjoonâs eyes begin to tear up, while your eyes have already overflown. your cheeks are entirely red, and you let out a choked sob. your head drops, and you let out a dry chuckle.
âfor over a decade, i have been nothing but loyal and true to you; yet, it takes a full-blown investigation for you to realize how you did me wrong,â you then look up at him with no sympathy in your body. âitâs my turn to tell you to get out, namjoon. and, for your sake, never come back. i never want to see you again.â
he hesitates to walk away, and youâre staring at him, emotionless.
âwhat, are you deaf? get out.â
namjoon finally leaves, walking quickly towards his car, and you fall to your knees. youâre on the cold floor, shaking and crying, as you realize your life will never be the same ever again.

Hi!! First, I just wanted to say I always enjoy checking out your posts because you have such great takes and treat every single ask with such respect. Even when itâs something that you may disagree with, you always take the time to ensure everyone that itâs just your opinion and respect the other personâs point of view! :) Itâs so refreshing to see because I feel like over hiatus especially the fandom has become somewhat of a dumpster fireâŚlol.
Also, I agree completely about Oliver. He always says that he trusts Tim and his writing so I donât think he would necessarily ask to have Lou leave or for BT to end abruptly or anything. And as much as we all say âoh he hates that manâ we truly donât know. What we do know, at least by his tweets at the time, was there was some tension in his friendship with Ryan several years back. Like itâs crazy to think during the shooting arc and will scene and Eddie breakdown arc in s5 that there was so much tension offscreen. It just goes to show how much of a professional he is! I also donât think the other side is true either where Oliver is apparently purposely not promoting BT or interacting with Lou on social media to âprotect him from the buddie fans.â I just think Oliver isnât super active on social media for his own reasons and people look waaayyyy too much into things. Anyway, sorry this was so long winded LOL I just wanted to point out that we truly donât know Oliver or his thoughts and feelings and some people making these inferences sound almost more like headcanons and itâs giving parasocial.
First of all, thank you Nonny. That means a lot to me. I always do my very best to try to stay respectful towards people and ships on my blog. That doesnât mean that I donât give my very honest opinions and critical takes on certain topics, but I donât feel the need to yell over it and use more explicit language. I also avoid specific shipping tags for ships I donât like and character tags for characters I don't like. I find that being respectful like that ultimately gets you further.
Now, that also doesnât mean that I donât get frustrated with some takes in fandom. But I mostly -and wisely- choose to rant about that to some of my Tumblr mutuals/friends in private. Throwing out all of my more hateful frustrations in public would only generate more hate and I try to avoid that. My inbox is so much more interesting when I get positive asks. I admit that I get so many asks these days that it has become impossible to answer them all.
Now, I do want to reply to your ask because you talk about a few topics that are near and dear to my heart and -of course- I have some opinions about. đ
I first want to address The Ryan part of your ask. I was around in fandom during those days. It wasnât pretty, but the way people talk about this now is a complete overreaction. The castâs reaction to this event totally gets blown out of proportion. There was some tension for a while there, sure. Oliver deleted some of his tweets/Instagram posts that had to do with Ryan and then he unfollowed him.
But it was obvious that it didnât take Oliver and the rest of the cast too long to move on. Iâm pretty sure that, by the time the shooting arc came along, followed closely by the breaking down arc, Oliver and Ryan were on good terms again. Maybe not as close as they were before at that specific moment, but still on good terms. Both men are professionals and they did such a fantastic job when it came to those amazing scenes.
Now, donât get me wrong, what Ryan said was inappropriate and disrespectful, I agree. However, the man apologised immediately and he has been working hard since then to become a better and lighter version of himself. And he has succeeded as we can all see how well he gets along with the entire cast and especially the POC in the cast that have completely moved past his mistake.
These days Ryan and Oliver are like two peas in a pod. They have always been close and they have always had insane chemistry, but ever since the beginning of season 7 it has all been ramped up. Iâm one of the people convinced that they got the news that Buddie is finally happening. That they got the green light to go there. Which is something they have wanted for a long time now.
Now, second⌠as to Oliver not liking Lou? Iâm afraid that Iâm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I really do think that Oliver doesnât like Lou all that much. If he was upset and angry over what Ryan said in one video a couple of years ago, I can only imagine his horrified reaction to all those terrible, disrespectful and inappropriate Instagram posts Lou made, for which he hasnât apologised at all by the way. That interview he did with Lou also doesnât help. Oliver wasnât comfortable at all. His body language screamed: âI donât want to be here.â And Lou just kept on talking about himself. I donât know why Oliver was even there. BT was hardly even mentioned.
So, while I donât think that Oliver would ask Tim to get rid of Lou, I only think he wouldnât ask in function of the Buddie arc they are telling. If Tommyâs presence is necessary in that arc? Oliver will suck it up like the professional he is, because if there is one thing he wants more than anything for Buck, itâs Eddie. If Tim were to tell Oliver that he wanted to take the BT relationship further in any way, I do think he would protest and say ânoâ.
Oliver not promoting BT or Tommy has to do with the fact that he knows that Tommy isnât sticking around as Buckâs love interest. Tommy is a plot device. He has always been a plot device. That is the way the show set him up. He is meant to have a purpose in the Buddie arc. What that purpose is? We donât know. But itâs all there in the narrative for those who are willing to look at it logically and from a writerâs point of view.
A few seasons ago Oliver just stopped talking about Buddie. In some of his latest interviews he confessed that he stopped talking about them because he didnât want to lead the fans on. He knew it would never happen under FOX. As soon as the show came into the hands of ABC, he started yapping about Buddie again. Him and Ryan were so vocal about them. It was clear that something had shifted. They knew that they were finally going there. Buddie was happening, but it would take some time to get there.
When they got renewed it was obvious that Tim decided to take his time for Buddie and put a temporary break on their development, so he could do it right in season 8. That didnât stop him from putting them together in every other scene they were in. đ
Now, like with all good slow burn couples there has to be a narrative foil. And in comes Tommy. Tommy who seems interested in Eddie. Buck who clearly gets jealous over the fact that Tommy is stealing Eddie (and Chris) from him. And then Tommy realising that he wonât get far with Eddie, but Buck (who is completely confused about his own emotions at this point) seems a little interested, so why not give it a go?
So, why is Oliver not talking about Tommy or engaging with anything BT while he still talks about Buddie and interacted with Buddie stuff up until the finale? Because he knows where the story is heading. History is repeating itself. Oliver doesnât want to lead the BT fans on, so he simply doesnât react or interact with anything Tommy or BT. And there is also the element that it is very clear right now that both Oliver and Ryan are actively rooting for Buddie and only Buddie. They know what their characters need. Love that for us! đ
None of this is about headcanons by the way. It has been said -in words- time and time again, by Oliver himself (and Ryan as well) that he would love Buddie to happen, if it was written well. He shows it in everything he does on social media. Him and Ryan talked about reading fan fiction and watching video edits. I mean, he couldnât make it anymore clear that he wants Buddie and not BT. So, this is not a headcanon. This is fact.
This is also not about parasocial relationships. We all like Oliver and Ryan, but most of us admire them from afar. We donât go into their inboxes to message them or we donât send them weird messages. I know that there are always some more outspoken fanatics in every fandom and the Buddie fandom is not an exception to that. It sadly cannot be avoided, but overall we have been pretty good as a fandom I would say.
That brings us to Lou and his army of goonsâŚ
Mind you, Iâm not talking about the many normal and lovely sane BT fans and multi-shippers who genuinly like Tommy. Ship and let ship and all. Most of these fans fully realise that Tommyâs time on the show is probably limited. Anonymous OP shoutout!
Iâm talking about the select few (the more outspoken and loud fandom fanatics I mentioned before) who accused Buddie fans of hacking one of their Twitter accounts and who thought it was a swell idea to DM Tim with a too long video about strings of fate (which Tim later admitted to never watching) Â and ask him about Tommyâs age and other stuff. That is just crazy and a big no no in any fandom. Leave the show runners and actors alone. I donât care who you ship. Just leave them alone.
The biggest problem is this: Lou made up a bunch of nonsensical headcanons about Tommy and BT that go against every single thing we have seen in canon so far. Canon has shown us, time and time again, that Tommy isnât really interested in Buck for a loving relationship. Everything he says is reduced to sexual innuendo. And no, I am not a little quivering virgin lady who is afraid of sex and who doesnât understand the dynamics between two adults in a sexual relationship. I am, in fact, an adult who has had sexual relationships and who knows exactly how relationships work between two adults in their thirties or forties.
Fully grown adults have paid hundreds of dollars to listen to Lou spout his nonsense. These people have all bought the same shirt Lou was wearing in one of his cameos. They call it the Louniform. These people believe every single thing that comes out of Louâs mouth and take it as gospel. They have extensively hated on Ryan and Eddie. And lately they have even been hating on Oliver because he doesnât support BT enough in their eyes.
Now that, THAT is a textbook example of a parasocial relationship with an actor.
They call the Buddie shippers âhomophobicâ for not liking a character. I myself have received some asks in my inbox accusing me of being homophobic. Iâm sorry, But WHAT? Look, I have never lied about not vibing with Tommy. I donât like him as a character. Iâm not hateful about it. I donât spew my dislike for Tommy all over the BT tag or something like that. I just respectfully talk about how he isnât right for Buck on my own personal blog. This is called âHaving an opinion and sharing it.â
Tommy is just not my kind of guy at all. I donât vibe with his demeanour and behaviour. I donât think he is a good match for Buck. I donât like the way he treats Buck. And yes! I am a Buddie shipper! So of course a part of why I donât like him is rooted in the opinion that he is the wrong guy for Buck. But there is so much more to it than only that. Now all of this is not me being homophobic. It is just me being critical and actually using my brain to understand what the show is ultimately really trying to tell me: Tommy is a plot device and we are not supposed to like him!
Iâm tired of being accused of something that I am not, over disliking a character that we arenât even supposed to like in the first place. Itâs crazy behaviour. It needs to stop!
Anyway, Iâm sorry Nonny. I didnât mean to end up venting like this on your ask, but it just happened. Now Iâm the one being long winded. Sorry.đ Iâm not mad at you or anything like that. Donât worry.
On the contrary, you helped me get some of these things out in a well written, but still respectful way. You got me writing about all of the fandom things that have been bugging me lately. I was on fire. So, in a weird way: Thank you for your assistance. â¤ď¸

A Much Needed Overview
Iâve been brought to a point of feeling the need to discuss the abuse depicted in Bungou Stray Dogs. This isnât the brightest topic to speak about and I understand why people are reluctant to speak in detail about something as serious as this. Itâs not easy, so Iâll be the brave face today because I feel disappointed about the lack of deep discussion beyond the popular topic of âThe Abuse Cycleâ.
Iâm happy that itâs at least brought up amongst everyone as something that exists, Iâm happy that people feel as though itâs something to talk about, but I donât think most understand how to act about it. Itâs never as cut and dry as how itâs depicted in most other pieces of media or how people speak about it in general. That is why I am thankful for its depiction here. Not saying that nobody speaks about it with clarity, but itâs not the majority, unfortunately.
I especially felt this was a good time to address this because of the reaction towards Asagiriâs thoughts on Dazai and Akutagawaâs relationship in the recent magazine interview. The outrage is not from nowhere, I was also taken aback at first, but to claim Asagiri âdoesnât even know his own storyâ is incredibly self-entitled considering the story isnât done, nor are you the one writing this. If you read the story, no way is Asagiri justifying anything that happened. Please look at the question that is being asked, does it say âDo you think what Dazai did is morally right?â Of course, it isnât.
Not to be rude but before you start questioning the writer himself if heâs read his own story, have you read it? Please keep in mind the fact this is only a magazine interview and doesn't reflect every nuance. Asagiri doesn't need to go âOh yeah, this thing thatâs bad is badâ every two seconds to explain himself. Asagiriâs writing decisions can be questionable and cannot be uncritiqued, but Iâm going to have to defend him on this account.
Iâm not sure if any warnings are needed concerning the subject matter considering most BSD fans know what Iâm about to go over, but to be clear, please only read this when youâre in a well enough headspace for heavy matters such as this. I am not going to be talking lightly in any of this or dance around whatâs happened between any of the characters, abuse is harder to talk about compared to other acts of violence that are objectively worse because itâs a more personal act that too many can find themselves in.
Finally, I do not want to speak about my own experiences online because Iâve only come to terms recently with it and they do not reflect everyoneâs response to depictions of abuse in all media. Some things are very uncomfortable to admit about me that I havenât told anyone, that no one would be able to take well even if they were my closest friend. This isnât about me at all and there is no point in saying more about my reality, but I think my perspective might help people enlighten themselves on how truly complicated situations like this are.
What is Abuse?
Surprise, we need to go over this before any discussion about BSD happens because a lot misunderstand what abuse is. It's disheartening that the term has been so simplified that nobody knows what it means anymore. Don't substitute words for abuse or use abuse as a substitute for other terms. Abuse as a concept is quite hard to pin down with words and there are many ways to describe it, but by definition in the context that itâs directed to another person, abuse is:
To target and mistreat someone, causing them harm or distress in a repetitive manner
This by itself does not describe the grand scope of everything and probably might make you more confused, but itâs a great place to start and does describe what is directed to the victim. Many sources will use varied wording, but itâs the general knowledge that someone is being hurt to a fundamental level that makes it abuse.
Does the abuser need to intentionally hurt someone for it to be abused? Yes, but not in the way you think. Most abusers are not hurting their victims for the sake of just hurting them, thatâs illogical, theyâre doing it for something. Some examples include either for themselves in some way or what they think is for their victimâs âown benefitâ. Even worse is when they genuinely believe it because theyâve also grown up in an environment that has that same mentality and reflects on themselves.
So yes, itâs intentional in that theyâre doing it for a purpose. No matter their intention though, âselflessâ or not, itâs still a selfish act in itself that they think that imposing their own will through harmful methods is what the victim needs. The abuse doesnât need to be physically harming another for it to be abuse. As long as itâs harming you emotionally or otherwise and making you raise flags in your head, itâs abuse.
It sounds strange, but I'm saying itâs intentional because youâre still an intended target of their abuse whether they realize it themself or not. Abuse needs to repeat a form of distress in you to be abuse. For example, does one instance of physical violence against you count as abuse when it never happens again? Well, you need to think about the context. Usually, this would just be assault and thatâs it, but is it left hanging in the air to happen again when you interact with them? Do you feel afraid for your well-being, even though it doesnât happen again?
Thatâs still abuse, the psychological kind. Typically when abusers resort to physical means, itâs gonna happen again eventually. In this hypothetical instance, however, the point is that repeated distress does not mean repeated actions. It does not need to happen the same way for you to feel unsafe, it just needs to have power over you. Manipulation does not always equal abuse either. Itâs a tactic used by abusers, but unless paired up with other actions, it doesnât fit the criteria of abuse. Context matters when you examine what abuse is.
Here comes the tricky parts that are acknowledged less: When the abuser is someone youâve relied on in your childhood, in a detrimental part of your life, or someone you care about that you put importance in, and it makes it hard to fully hate that person. What the abuser has done to the victim does not entirely reflect them as people, even if itâs still an important part of them that needs to be addressed.
Abusive people are not only defined by their awful actions, theyâre not pure monsters like most love to pretend they are. Itâs just easier to think that because accepting that theyâre just a multifaceted human being hurts too much when youâre on the receiving end of their worse behavior. But what happens when youâre on the receiving end of both? You try to justify it the way the abuser is because you canât accept that whatâs happening is bad and not something everyone goes through. After all, they treat you decent enough sometimes.
Something so many people need to get into their heads already is that abusers can be victims and vice versa, but just because your abuser went through something themselves or is important to you, doesnât mean you have to forgive them. Abuse is not forgivable just like that, you can rebuild a relationship beyond that if youâre able to, Itâs not a âforgive-and-forgetâ thing.
Not everyone experiences and responds to abuse the same way, some hate their abusers fully, some canât bring themselves to, and some donât even know what to think, but there are so many who donât feel one way that regarding all abusers as heartless monsters completely invalidates so many stories and their difficult experiences. I have a huge grudge against people like this who restrict abusive situations to just looking like one thing, this is why so many donât even know that their situations are abusive.
Portrait of a Father
Chapter 39 reflects my points the most, and at the same time, it also turns out to be one of the most controversial chapters. It surprised me that it is, but maybe I shouldnât be considering how most people on the internet act about abuse. Itâs a lovely chapter to me personally and one of my favorites.
If you need a refresher, this is the chapter the Orphanage Director died in and leaves Atsushi in an emotional frenzy about what to think and believe. I know that the underlying message of this chapter is confusing to some, but it hit me in the face point blank on how this is about facing your abuserâs death without any personal conclusion with them.
Being sent on an investigation, Atsushi, after finding out the body was the Director, is stunned and scared because he knows nothing of the director other than his cruelty. He immediately assumes the worst and that he was coming after him again. Atsushiâs thoughts against him are entirely⌠on purpose in the directorâs intentions because we find out that he has gone through so much violence and loss himself that heâs projecting his own will onto Atsushi and making sure heâd âsurvive in the real worldâ. So he became his first figure of hate and violence earlier in his life so heâd be âprepared for what comes nextâ.
I know so many take the backstory for the director as a way to justify what he did to Atsushi in the narrative, but it was just to put into context why he was so cruel. Abusers are never cruel for no reason, that never makes it right, but itâs reality. Atsushi was not the only one in the orphanage who was treated badly, he was singled out by the director most likely for an ability he couldn't control because the headmaster knew heâd get the most trouble for it, and unfortunately⌠he was right.
Akutagawa being his informant in this chapter makes perfect sense. He can see that what the director was for Atsushi is what Dazai is for him. No matter how terrible their actions were, itâs what kept them alive for so long. Itâs not pleasant to confront, is it? Atsushi agrees because when he gets the information that the Director was going to congratulate him with the flowers he was going to buy by selling the gun he had on him, he freaks out. No way the guy he was raised so long to hate, the guy who put him through so much suffering, was going to congratulate him.
I know to some, Dazaiâs talk with Atsushi sounded like he was justifying what happened because âit made him a good person in the endâ, but thatâs not whatâs being said. This conclusion Iâve seen some people come to about this conversation confuses me. Dazai is just saying the obvious, you guys get all shocked and it weirds me out how easily itâs been glossed over that the reason Atsushi is so self-sacrificial and trying to do the good thing is because of the director. The reason he puts himself so much on the front lines is because he needs that worth in being good to live and prove the director wrong, he was raised to see that type of person is the most ideal person to live in this world.
After everything thatâs been dumped onto him in such a short time, so much inner conflict of what to think of a dead man he no longer can have any personal closure with, he asks Dazai what face he should make, what he should think at this moment. Dazai tells him that theyâre his emotions and he can think however heâd like, but commonly someone cries when their father dies. So he cries, because ultimately no matter his treatment, no matter the intent and its effects, itâs still the man who raised him. Itâs flawed, but thatâs what a father is stripped bare at its core definition and that wonât change no matter your feelings.
Now that Iâm done summarizing this chapter and making sure you guys understood the point and how it spells out their relationship, I can finally talk freely about what was happening between them. When it comes to familial abuse, generational trauma is so prevalent itâs hard not to talk about. The director is quite reflective of so many parents who were raised to grow up too early in harsh environments, that they think they need to prepare their children for it too, even though itâs no longer needed.
You donât need to like someone for them to be important to you, especially if itâs a parent in your life or someone close to that. Thatâs why Atsushi cries. He cries for the director, he cries for himself, he cries that itâs finally over, he cries for the kindness he couldâve gotten even if it wouldnât have fixed anything, he cries for the father that never was, he cries because his father is dead. Itâs perfectly normal to keep someone close in your heart that wasnât perfect and to grieve their death.
Was the director successful in what he was aiming for? I want to say no, but he did. He succeeded in making Atsushi think of others in a good light and do good for them, making Atsushi resent him, and giving him the ability to keep going. Hell raised him right, but it was still hell. The problem is that his teachings were based on degrading Atsushi into being nothing but a life he should put aside in favor of others. Even if he continued hating the director like he wanted, he would still degrade himself for being a coward who didnât hold himself to those standards. The result is not perfect because the director is not perfect, but in his position, this is a success.
The director for a while was his shadow of negative encouragement when he joined the agency, what kept him going in those moments, because he was what defined good, bad, and justice for him in his entire childhood. Even if he was dead, heâd still linger in his mind. I canât parse out what to think about these hallucinations forming Akutagawa and Dazai to guide him later on, all it tells me is that he still canât rely on or trust himself and he needs more development in his self-image issues.
I see why fans are confused, hell raising us right is a bizarre thing to say to a victim, so let me show you a perspective you're not seeing. Let's imagine you have an abusive mother who only wants you to be prepared for the things you're undoubtedly going to experience because of what you can't control. What she did does help you, but all that goes through your head is âWhy couldn't she have done it differently without my own suffering?â The only thoughts that come rushing back when you think of those memories are the unnecessary pains. It takes a lot for a victim to acknowledge this on their own, they want to push back at the past so they don't have to see this plain reality.
Like anyone else that Iâm going to bring up in this post, just because the abuse made them who they are or affected who they became, even when it keeps us going through life and benefits us in some way, does not make the abuse justified. Abuse is still abuse, I addressed this already and I hope not to address this again. I needed to detail an explanation because itâs quite easy to hate a man you know nothing about and has been painted in nothing but a bad light. The anger against the director is undebatable because abuse is not debatable, but to pretend the cruelty was nothing but for crueltyâs sake is mischaracterizing both him and Atsushi.
You canât pick and choose whatâs been told to you in the text just because you donât like a character and lack the maturity for it. It gets quite hard to do that sort of thing when itâs a character youâve grown to care about, itâs no wonder Dazai is divided between so many. Speaking of Dazai, his involvement in this makes as much sense as Akutagawaâs. Heâs currently in a mentor position for Atsushi, no matter what Akutagawa says, and shows interest in his development. So of course heâs going to purposely stick his head into something that would affect Atsushi greatly. Both Akutagawa and Dazai are viewing this through their lenses as people who grew up in the darkness of society, and itâs not that Dazai thinks what happened to him wasnât terrible, you should have eyes to read the panels provided, but heâs generally unfazed and able to sound neutral because heâs used to that cruelty.
The Port Mafiaâs Environment
(Aka: is it really âall Moriâs faultâ or is it just the product of being literally in The Mafiaâ˘?)
Iâll go over the âCycle of Abuseâ in a second, but please keep in mind that you canât just blame everything on Mori. Just like the Director, itâs so easy to pin the guy whoâs just been the worst for every problem there, but it decimates the other characters involved as well and makes what theyâve gone through go flat because youâre restricting it to a misinformed presumption.
To make a bold statement, I need you to completely throw away your idea of what the abuse cycle is. The Mori to Kyouka pipeline being the singular âAbuse Cycleâ? Garbage, needs to go away too. I've seen many fans use the term âCycle of Abuseâ too carelessly, and while from afar the way they're using it is not technically wrong, they have the wrong thought process behind it.
The Cycle of Abuse is simply the patterns of what keeps us in an abusive dynamic and negative mental state, either with an individual or environment, and makes it incredibly hard for anyone to leave. Itâs not the actions you take that make it the Cycle of Abuse, and it's not just one straight line of people going through similar motions. You donât have to be someoneâs abuser to be the one who keeps them there, if you feed into it youâre still a problem. Even if you don't actively add to it yourself, just staying there as a bystander and not trying to do anything to change it or speak up for the victim when you clearly could also still make you responsible. Just with your presence, it validates what they've gone through as normal.
If you need more of an explanation, two opposite examples include Higuchi & Akutagawa and Beast Kyouka & Atsushi. Higuchi is a traditional example in that she stays in the mafia because of her relationship with Akutagawa, and stays by his side for reasons unknown. What we do know is that sheâs incredibly indebted to him enough to care for him to an extreme extent, but their relationship is abusive all the same. Beast Atsushi and Kyouka sounds strange for me to bring up, but this is an example of a non-abusive person contributing to the Cycle of Abuse. Instead of taking her out of an abusive situation, he brings her back in.
Many characters are a part of this main narrative of abuse in BSD, so it's not inaccurate to say Mori, Dazai, Akutagawa, and Kyouka are a part of it as well using this definition as all of them are the reason or contributed to why someone was stuck in a negative, abusive situation or the victim themselves. Iâm guessing none of you are genuinely referring to this though and are referring to intergenerational abuse, a repeating cycle of younger generations taking after their abusers when they're older, which is a completely different phenomenon. Both are referred to as cycles and have many commonalities, but itâs not the same. Not to sound like a total dick, but this barely even applies to them.
Not because the concept is based on familial relationships, it can happen with older figures in your life too, but because our oh-so-famous Abuse Cycle gang does not have that commonality to make that claim. They have narrative parallels, but thatâs pretty much it. I will save what I have to say in their sections, but Mori and Akutagawa did not abuse Dazai and Kyouka respectively for this type of claim to have any legitimacy. Kyouka certainly broke a cycle, but not that kind since that would need her to continue it in the first place and then prevent her own experiences from even affecting the next child.
What do all Mori, Dazai, Akutagawa, and Kyouka actually have in common? They are/were in the mafia, using their natural talents of cruelty for the underworld.
The Port Mafia resembles something of an abusive household or community that sees so much of whatâs done to others there as normal, and constantly compares it to how it was with their old boss and thinks, âAt least it wasnât as bad as that.â Itâs quite like the Orphanage Directorâs thinking but on a larger scale. Does that make everyone in the Port Mafia abused? Nope, unlike most abusive communities, the Port Mafia is quite literally the mafia. Everyone is there for different reasons, at different ages, and different experiences. Everyone is taken advantage of in these situations, no matter the circumstances, but it doesnât make them abused automatically.
So itâs hard to have a stance on anything about them being abusive other than the mentor situations in the Port Mafia donât see abuse as abuse and just another way to teach their subordinates to survive in their world if they deem it necessary. Was Chuuya abused, either by Mori or Kouyou then? Iâm going to have to say I canât tell you that. We donât have enough information on either of his dynamics with them to say that theyâve directly had any repetitive behaviors of direct harm against him specifically, and there's no reason for them to do so either. Iâm not going to use the argument that âChuuya doesnât hate or fear them, so that must mean he wasnâtâ because again, that type of response does not reflect so many situations.
Chuuya was still harmed by being in the Port Mafia as a teenager because nobody should have been surrounded by this much cruelty at that age. It doesnât matter if he shows visible distress or not about the Port Mafia, he was just desensitized to it since his sheep days. So was he an abuse victim under the idea that being a child in the Port Mafia is abuse? That depends on who weâre speaking of, but in Chuuyaâs situation, I'm going to have to say no as he's already internalized their mindset from his own experiences separate from the mafia. Keep in mind that it also still holds true that you can find family in situations like this, itâs not mutually exclusive. Some just find more comfort in what theyâre used to than what would be better for them. Kyouka is a better example of someone being a victim of an abusive community.
A false claim I've seen made many times are the ones where they have it as if Mori is the mafia itself or that he made the mafia what it was. It shouldnât be too surprising, but itâs the opposite. Mori already held flawed, heartless, calculative methods when in situations he thought required them. Weâve seen him as a soldier and an underground doctor, but we know nothing else about him outside of his cruelty, just like the headmaster. What he does is never for what he thinks is for his benefit, but for the sake of something larger. Whether itâs for the city, the country, or eventually, the Port Mafia.
The mafia is the first time heâs been put into a position of absolute leadership and is not yet accustomed to that at the beginning of Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen. Heâs able to quickly fit the mold of a mafia boss, but thereâs that bit of honesty that peaks through in this light novel in the first and last sections thatâs ignored too quickly. First Mori complains about nothing going immediately right, questions himself about Dazai, and becomes genuinely stressed if it was the right decision to involve him, then confesses that he sees himself in Dazai to him (and him and Fukuzawa in Soukoku in private), and finally gives his honest take of leadership to Chuuya.
I already go over Mori as a character in one of my other posts and will speak more of him later on, so I donât want to reiterate the same points, but here we have proof he has (albeit poor) humanity. He did not become the Port Mafia boss for his own selfish gain of power if youâve forgotten, but because Natsume introduced him to becoming part of the Tripartite Framework to protect the city he loves, itâs where heâd excel best in this plan. The Port Mafia was already a shithole, Mori just made it livable again by becoming what an organized crime group needs.
Itâs what makes the dynamic between Kouyou and him so intriguing because you have an abuse victim who has embraced the environment she was forced back into, but wonât let go of someone whoâs proven to be more of a decent leader than her tormentor and can be relied on. For victims who couldnât get help or realize they needed help, the easier path is to accept this is your life through some justification. While I said the Port Mafia resembles an abusive community, communities as such arenât purely terrible and thatâs what keeps them justifying it in their head. The family you have for yourself, whether it's a made one or the one you're born with, is what sticks for you.
Like it or not, Mori isnât stupid. He takes risky gambles that backfire on him sometimes, but heâs good at his job. Heâs brutal enough to prove his own against the people who didnât think he shouldâve been boss and outsiders who want to go against the Port Mafia, but heâs considerate enough towards his people and shows enough competency to be perfect for the job. Heâs not a great human being, but what did you expect? He no longer had any room to express that humanity, he never had; there was no benefit from being a good person in his line of work.
The Heartless Cur
That looked like a great segue to talk about Dazai and Moriâs dynamic, but itâd benefit to go over Akutagawa first. For those who do acknowledge it as an abusive situation, Thank you for at least taking that step. Numerous donât and it worries me at the state of whatâs considered abuse vs. training. It may be both at times but don't excuse one for the other. Training needs formal consent and communication at some point during a session. Akutagawa is learning, but itâs the same as getting yelled at as a child for not doing your homework right, when again, youâre still just learning.
It mightâve been easier to see for those who do acknowledge it because of the visible physical abuse that happens, but let's not undermine the psychological abuse happening as well. Dazai has messed with his psyche on an abhorrent level through his degrading and threats, making him reliant to hear a single word of acknowledgment from his mouth. What happened to Akutagawa is beyond the mafiaâs environment.
Akutagawa does not hate or want Dazai dead for what heâs done to him, but he does hold anger at the seeming abandonment heâs been put through⌠and at himself as well. Anger that he couldn't get to what Dazai wanted him to be before he suddenly left. So he proves himself by climbing the ranks and becoming someone feared. Spectacles of violence not because he enjoys the feeling of otherâs suffering or the power over them, but to show Dazai that see? He's still worth looking at!
He stays in the mafia because heâs found a place there. Even if he could, there was no point in leaving the mafia after he disappeared because what would be left for him if he did? He will always be an unchangeable, horrific hound of the dark and there's no changing that in his mind. From an inference of his actions in the dungeon when they finally reunite one-on-one, he wanted to believe that he was above Dazai after all those years, but Dazai doesn't act impressed or scared or anything. After all that effort, he gets nothing but ridicule and mockery like he's back to being that little kid with an oversized coat too big for his body.
Worse is that he gets told that some new kid Dazai picked up, who didn't train to the extent he did to refine his abilities, is better than him somehow. He gets riled up and at first, takes out on Dazai, but all those threats about killing him and how he went against the mafia were empty. Even now he can't bring himself to hate Dazai, he needs his mentor to acknowledge him no matter what side he's on. He never let go of Dazai, his coat is proof enough of that. So he takes it out on the party that isn't responsible and is convinced he needs to overcome Atsushi to prove something to Dazai.
He doesn't hate Atsushi, not genuinely. He does the same when heâs told heâll never compare to Odasaku, someone who objectively shouldâve been the weakest member due to his status. He gets angry at Dazaiâs words, gets angry at himself, then takes it out on the person mentioned, rinse and repeat. Iâm not sure if Iâm the only one to notice, but he genuinely believed that the meaningful life Dazai gave him laid in the mafia and being useful to its cause. He has no reason to be as loyal to the mafia if he didn't think this.
Dazaiâs acknowledgment means more than just appreciation for his skills and strength, it means his life meant something by striving for being the strongest. Itâs not about the acknowledgment at all. Whenever he critiques and shames Atsushi for how he lives his life, it just feels like heâs unknowingly shaming himself through him without having to acknowledge his wrongs. It makes me curious about how much the acknowledgment itself even matters to him and the validation it gives him to strive for this is an excuse to keep living so what heâs doing in the mafia even matters in the end. What counts as acknowledgment to him?
He's convinced his faults are what made Dazai turn away, he just doesnât know how to do anything to fix it and can't fix it this late into the game. What does Dazai want from him other than being stronger? When Dazai directly asks him to do something important involving Atsushi, heâs confused. He has no reason to trust him to do these missions. Heâll take the chance to prove himself once and for all, but to be included means he's being acknowledged, so what gives? The number of times he visibly self-reflects can be counted on one hand because as soon as it shows, he goes back to justify his violence and ignores his faults.
As someone whose favorite character is Akutagawa, Iâm disgusted that all people can take away from him is âAkutagawa is an obsessive fanboy that deserves no sympathy because of what he did to Kyoukaâ or âAkutagawa is a poor, miserable man that didnât deserve what Dazai made him into and should be absolved of responsibility because itâs all Dazaiâs faultâ. Both are very shallow and very harmful to perpetrate as they continue the idea that a person can only be the abused or abuser. He's both and it's okay to admit that.
Quickly letâs clear up this: He is not the way he is because of Dazai.
What Dazai IS responsible for:
Akutagawaâs need for his constant approval and recognition
Akutagawa learning to hone his ability
Akutagawaâs toxic views of being useful
The reason Akutagawaâs still alive
The reason Akutagawa is the Mafiaâs dog
What Dazai is NOT responsible for:
Everything else
Akutagawaâs lean toward violence, his one-track stubborn mindset, and his lone-wolf attitude are not a product of Dazaiâs treatment, heâs always been that way because of his time in the slums. He got beaten down by adults frightened of his empty gaze, had to learn to protect himself and find something to eat to survive, helped take care of his sister Gin and his friends by himself, and everyone constantly dying around him. Thatâs the real reason his personality is like that. He is a victim of his circumstances in a society that deemed him worthless, so he also thinks of his life as worthless. Thatâs why Dazai means so much to him.
Dazai did not trick him into joining the mafia, Dazai expressed what he was going to go through was worse than what happened in the slums and gave Akutagawa an out that he could live a normal life with enough money, but he knew Akutagawa would not refuse because he still needed meaning in living, just like him. Gaining enough money to get by so he and his sister could get out of the slums would do nothing for him, he already felt that his life was worthless. He has no problem throwing it away at any time, he was gonna die young regardless because of his lung disease. It has manipulative undertones, but that's how Dazai usually is with even the people he cares about.
Akutagawa knows too well that a person needs a sign, someone to tell them itâs okay to keep going, and so does Dazai. Part of Dazaiâs goal is to save Akutagawa from dying and give him a reason to live like he promised that day because he sees the potential that could come from his development. I don't want to sound like a dick again, but youâd have to be dense to think Akutagawa would still be dead by the end of this arc. He isnât sending him off to his death, Dazai doesnât know everything.
Even if he knew Akutagawa might die there, it's better than both Atsushi and Akutagawa dying at that moment. If Akutagawa didnât want to die for him, he wouldnât have, he chose to save Atsushiâs life. This is why I have to defend Asagiri. Letâs reread the interview together, to make it get across already.
(Twt link)
Q: Just like how Akutagawa and Atsushi's relationship has changed, I could feel the relationship between Dazai and Akutagawa moving forward too. Is it like what Akutagawa has said in Episode 3 of Season 5, that every order he has received from Dazai so far has been "a trial", "a part of a meaningfull life"?
First, the question being asked. Theyâre asking Asagiri about their relationship in the present, and how itâs developed. Akutagawa is no longer thinking he was abandoned by Dazai for a new, better student like he was made him believe, that was just to rile him up and interact with Atsushi more. Instead, he realizes that heâs not supposed to work against Atsushi, heâs supposed to work with him. How he decides to go about that battle with Fukuchi and whether or not he works with Atsushi like a partner is his trial. If this was Akutagawa before he met Atsushi, he wouldâve no doubt escaped or mightâve thought defeating Fukuchi would prove himself to Dazai. He's not an obstacle to his meaningful life, his quest for a meaningful life lies with Atsushi.
Asagiri responds with:
Asagiri: Needless to say, Dazai is the most qualified person in this world to help Akutagawa grow. Dazai has a vision for Akutagawa's development, and he completely understands what it takes to achieve it. We, as obsevers, can only see bits and pieces of that vision. But I can at least say that Dazai's training plan has never been wrong.
Many find this answer questionable, I was stunned reading it myself. Asagiri is not wrong at all here though, Dazai is objectively the only person in this series who can find a way to help him. Atsushi is the endpoint, but Dazai has been guiding him to this point. Dazai himself said that he was planning to team them up the moment he met Atsushi, he was still thinking of him even after all these years. There are much scarier implications than thinking that Asagiri was wrong. It's that Dazai was doing everything intentionally to get Akutagawaâs mindset where it was. He didn't mess up with Akutagawa, he just couldn't personally teach him the skills he needed and chose a different route until he found something that could.
Asagiri is not saying the abuse was morally justified, but the intention behind it was not wrong in an objective stance. Dazai would know what to do the most because of his understanding of wanting to find meaning in living. Teenage Dazai couldnât have achieved much by himself, even if he could understand since he also could not find meaning in life. Thatâs why he made him hang on to his every breath of validation so he would keep his faith in Dazai long enough for him to find a solution to this dilemma. The moment in life when he found Akutagawa was not ideal and he still did what he thought he had to do for him to survive in the mafia. Without his ability, he's incredibly weak and needs to be able to defend himself. A violent person could not have made another violent person unlearn their violence.
You could say he just wanted a weapon, but thatâs not it, not even close. Many of you are stuck on the part that it was a suicidal teenager that picked Akutagawa up from the slums and that no way someone like that could teach another suicidal teenager anything, so itâs âcomical that Asagiri thinks as though heâs the most qualifiedâ. Youâre not wrong in some sense, but this is still incredibly intelligent, âBlack Wrath of the Port Mafiaâ, Osamu Dazai, and not just some suicidal teenager.
Heâs also no longer a teenager. Right now weâre talking of Dazai in the present whoâs grown and no longer needs to be how he was in the mafia, he has Atsushi now, someone who can help Akutagawa see whatâs wrong in his outlook. The only thing he couldâve done back then was to shelter Akutagawa so he wouldnât kill himself. It's horrible, but Dazai validating where he is now would do no good for either of them and fix nothing.
Q: What kind of person is Dazai to Akutagawa?
Asagiri: Actually, at the time of "The Dark Era", Dazai already spoke very highly of Akutagawa, as someone who would "become the Mafia's strongest skill user in the not-so-distant future". He just doesn't say that in front of Akutagawa himself. The reason he doesn't say it is that Dazai has to be "the presence that continues to give meaning to life" to Akutagawa. So far, that trial has been completely successful.
None of what Asagiri brings up is new information. He doesnât say it in front of Akutagawa not to spite him, but if he gives these praises out too freely, he loses his distant, almost god-like presence in Akutagawa and will go back to being just a lone wolf with no exceptions that will carelessly get himself killed. Without any goal, heâs lost. Just like Atsushi and the headmaster and how Atsushi hinges on proving he can do a good thing to motivate his life, Akutagawa similarly hinges on the fact that if he fails, he wonât get Dazaiâs approval.
However, his death was not fully about Dazaiâs approval in the way he's been preaching. In chapter 87, he mentions Dazaiâs approval like always, and when they fail the first time even after trusting and working with each other as Shin Soukoku should, It hits him. What came into his head I cannot parse out at the moment, but his actions speak so much louder than any explanation we could've gotten. Of course, he's helping Atsushi escape, but what does he do for that? He used his ability on his shirt, and not just on the coat like he typically does.
It doesn't seem like a big deal at first, he could've always done that, but when was the last time he used it on something that wasn't the coat Dazai gave him? The coat means many things. His new beginning, his path in being Dazaiâs student and successor (as that was also Moriâs coat), but it also conveys Dazaiâs will that keeps him alive and that he's only strong with his coat. Without it, he's defenseless, so he clings to this coat the exact way he clings to those orders. It's his encouragement to keep going when Dazai isn't there. This overwhelming, suffocating responsibility, an oversized coat, is a lot to give to a kid but it's comfortable and heâll grow into it eventually.
It was already a huge step in his development that he gave Atsushi his coat, but to use his ability not on his coat means he's making an effort to overcome his fixation and do an action unrelated to Dazai for the sake of Atsushiâs life. His whole life after the slums, everything he's ever done was with Dazai in mind. Him saving Atsushiâs life was not because he was doing what Dazai wanted him to do, that he'd finally get approval for doing It, and in turn give his life meaning before he died. When he saved Atsushi, it would give his life meaning in just that. He shouldn't let himself be defined by the past the way he criticizes Atsushi for, so heâs going to choose his meaning. I wouldn't say he's moved past Dazai yet, but he's getting there.
Dazai and Akutagawaâs relationship is not healthy in the slightest, and Dazaiâs crueler actions and words against him are not right, but theyâre still growing and not stagnant characters. Atsushi and Akutagawa learn from each other and that's what's pushing them to change. Nobody will pretend those past means werenât just abuse, they were, but there's so much more to it. Like I asked with the director, was he successful? Well from what Iâve said, yes it so far has gone the way Dazai hoped for in the best-case scenario.
In the main universe at least, this is one of the better ways it couldâve gone. Beast is a different story. Teenage Dazai of the main universe was unsure of Akutagawaâs future and did only what he couldâve done at that time, but Beast Dazai does have that knowledge and he decided that it would be best for Akutagawa to not be in the mafia, instead bringing in Atsushi. It wouldnât have been good to let him pursue his violent tendencies more than necessary in the mafia in this universe when he knew there was a better option, especially with someone like Oda, who would take the time to care for him properly.
Even if he didnât bring him in, he still gave him the motivation to keep living for something. The prologue of Beast is a mirror to The Heartless Cur, with instead itâs a distant relationship of hate Akutagawa has for him for taking his sister. For those who argue that since Beast exists, that means Asagiri was somehow âwrong about Dazaiâ, but itâs still Dazai from the beginning thatâs the source of this motivation. Dazai, who's still guiding him. If weâre gonna be honest, Dazai was putting their development/capabilities in speed run mode with the logic and future information he had access to prepare them for a timeline he wonât be alive for. There are many factors for what he did in Besst, but thatâs not the conversation.
What does he get from helping him? Who knows, Asagiri wasnât being cheeky when he said we only see bits and pieces of his vision. We barely have any clue whatâs going through that manâs head, so donât act like you do. He wasnât always planning for the next Soukoku. Maybe it was a thought that came up sometimes, but heâs only met Atsushi recently. What about Akutagawa was so different from any other powerful ability-wielding orphan? Well, weâre not gonna know any time soon.
The point is that Dazai is thinking about their future, even if the abuse or manipulation makes that hard to see. Please do remember that abuse is still selfish no matter the intention, but non-selfish intentions make it all the more complicated to process. Their relationship is not misunderstood by Asagiri himself, itâs just clear to me most donât want to face the unpleasant truth that there is more to their dynamic. When I first realized what was going on, I couldnât help but get unnerved and awkward when someone would ask me about these two. These are both characters in the spotlight that youâre supposed to care about, but what happened between them is rotten.
Youâre not supposed to pretend it didnât happen because Dazai still contributed to who he is and it shows whenever itâs on screen. Abuse doesnât make us stronger, donât make it as if thatâs a message that Asagiri is spreading. What happened to him motivated his development, but with Atsushi, thatâs the opposite. Their circumstances are different and victims process what's happened to them in various ways. Depicting it in a form less common than usual doesn't mean the author thinks in the same way the victim does, it's just nuance at work.
I did not add Akutagawaâs attitude towards his subordinates and newer members as Dazaiâs responsibility because Dazai is not the one controlling his hands when he hits Higuchi. Dazaiâs mentoring contributed to his toxic views of being useful, but itâs only Akutagawaâs responsibility once he raises his hand. Instead of thinking of this in the context of the most typical abusive situation you can think of, how about this:
Your parent was raised in an abusive household, but they think they came out of it just fine and that there was nothing wrong with how they were treated. They treat you almost the same way, and all you can take away from that when you find out is, âAt least itâs not as bad as it couldâve beenâ. You still hold anger at the standards theyâre forcing you to reach, but if thatâs what it takes to get that approval, then youâll keep going anyway. Even if you get yelled at and you know you shouldnât be treated like this, itâll feel nice when you finally get on their good graces, right?
Then you get a new sibling, and all of that comes crumbling down. They donât treat your sibling anywhere near the same when you were that age. Years go by and you get angrier and angrier. Why is it only you that was put to that standard? Even worse is that they treat you differently now too. You finally got to those standards, but now what is it worth? Theyâre so much nicer now and you want to curse them out for only changing now. Why couldnât have had that parent from the beginning? Itâs so unfair, but you canât take it out on them because you still need them, they mean so much to you. As angry as you were, they were doing it because they cared about you in their way, you think. It was what your grandparents did to them at least. So you start treating your sibling similarly to how you were treated because you canât take it that they didnât experience that hardship without destroying yourself first.
Question: Are you right in what you did? Was the parent responsible for what you did to your sibling?
Nobody in their right mind would say yes to that first question. It makes sense why it happened, but continuing abuse will never be the correct answer. Youâre doing the same thing your parent did. The second question needs more exposition to answer, however. How responsible is responsible?
In the end, even if it was the parent who influenced it, youâre only responsible for what youâve done on your own accord. The parent did not tell you to take it out on your sibling, you decided that yourself. The parent is still responsible for what theyâve done to you, never get that wrong, but if you say that your guilt is absolved because itâs all their fault, you sound no different from any other abuser in denial. Are you saying now that the parent is also absolved from guilt because itâs all their parentâs fault too? Listen to yourself, You hurt someone but itâs not your fault, but the person who hurt you is also somehow not at fault? If someone came up to you and said that, youâd be fed up.
For those who do the same thing with Mori, rethink what youâre saying. Is it that painful to admit your favorite characters are at fault and that theyâre changing? This comparison isnât perfect and ignores some key factors: Dazai isnât Akutagawaâs or Atsushiâs father and is not much older than them, the Port Mafia is a violent workplace environment and requires you to be able to navigate it a certain way, and all three of them at adults in present time. I used this comparison to be more real to earth and something a larger audience could process themselves to truly get that the emotions here are not straightforward even in a realistic situation.
Re: Portrait of a Father
Just like the prologue, in chapter 3 of the Beast light novel, Portrait of a Father is mirrored and retold in brutal upset that does not hold the hopeful bittersweetness at the end of it unlike its original. Before the present day, against all orders Dazai gave him, Atsushi attacked the orphanage on the day of his birthday. On his birthday, he would be reborn from the ashes of his past being burnt away, and kill the director inside to release himself from the fear of those memories.
Itâs what he says at least.
Playing out, the director was expecting him. There might have only been one person in his mind who wouldâve attacked a rundown orphanage on this scale. It frightens Atsushi after all that planning and fear of losing to the director, he could still see through him, but confusion takes hold when heâs told that he was late for his graduation.
Graduation? Atsushi is in fight or flight mode, why is he approaching him with this box? He canât imagine it being anything other than a weapon, nothing else would make sense for this cruel monster. The director wonât give him any straight answer, just repeating words heâs heard over and over growing up here. He uses his tiger hearing to glean what could be inside.
Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
Thereâs the proof, it had to be a bomb. He needs to protect himself before anything happens or heâll die. Heâs scared, he canât move, but he has to fight. The director opens his arms for the embrace of his child⌠and death, plummeted into a bloody mess on the floor. Only out of the corner of his eye, only when Atsushi stopped, he saw what was in the box. It was a watch, brand new and high-end. Happy Birthday was what was written on a sheet of paper next to it.
His last words, whispered into his ear, were words of encouragement: âYes⌠just like that.â
I was not kidding when I said this was brutal. Just like in the main universe, Atsushi learns why he did what he did and canât place any of his feelings, but overwhelmingly guilt crushes him to keep protecting people with his life rather than just fear because he killed him. He finds out much earlier about what happened with Shibusawa, and how the director protected his identity as the tiger.
The directorâs intentions are draining when you let your mind wander. As weâve established, the headmaster as a figure of hate for Atsushi is intentional on his part. He doesnât explain anything on purpose here to probe him into killing him. He bought that watch for Atsushi as a congratulations for growing up and becoming a new independent individual.
In the split minute before Atsushi took the first swing, he said his usual, âThose who fail to protect others do not deserve to live.â I have to question now if he was so willing to die there, even encouraging him to kill him, then has it been this whole time he still canât live with himself for what happened to his friends⌠or is it because he couldnât protect Atsushi anymore? Maybe Iâm overthinking it and it was just that the headmaster thought Atsushi needed to kill him to remove an obstacle in his growth as an individual, to be a necessary sacrifice for his benefit.
It's too flawed though. The director will never leave him, not after all that he's engraved into Atsushi. The watch has become not a symbol of a person who's found himself, but a child that's latched himself onto his father's cold corpse that won't ever respond, but that child would do anything to have him wake up and say "Good job, Atsushi". The director also has a clock, but can he call himself a strong individual when he hasn't let go of the past either?
Time stopped for Beast Atsushi when he picked up that watch. If he had just followed orders, none of this wouldâve happened. If he isnât his fatherâs child, if he doesnât uphold his last wish, then who is he? When heâs no longer in the mafia and has time for himself to think, he wanders.
He failed in becoming someone he could be proud of, he deserved to die for that but doesn't want to be dead⌠because It wasn't truly about the Director, just like how it wasn't truly about Dazaiâs acknowledgment or saving his sister for Akutagawa. At first, that was the motivation, it's the reasoning they keep going with, but in the end, it was to save their own life and give it purpose to validate why they're still around. If they can die like this, then it's all the same. If they have their own life in someone elseâs hands, then they no longer have to be responsible for their own heavy-hearted weight.
Beast Atsushi is given neither and is taken of his reasoning, but he keeps going. Aimlessly.
Luckily, itâs not where his story ends.
He wakes up in his old orphanage, and itâs no longer the dreary place it was when he was younger. Kids laughing outside, no chains on the walls or bars blocking off the windows, and the new Orphanage Director greets him. He tells him that he will go back to being a student of the orphanage until he can become independent again, under one of Dazaiâs last requests before he died.
Still, thereâs one thing he needs to do. The new director takes out the watch and tells him to break it. Atsushi is distraught by this notion, but he wonât let Atsushi leave if he doesnât. The new director has good reason, there is no point in becoming someone the past director was proud of and this is whatâs holding him back. Atsushi, eventually, tells him he will not break the watch. He canât move on just yet and this watch is still proof heâs himself, yetâŚ
Heâll keep going and move forward, just like Akutagawa told him after he spared his life. The new director finds those words to be enough, saying he canât leave until he finds something else to define himself with, but he can keep living here as his son. He went there to burn away his past and came out of it not able to let go of the past, but now he can redo and process it healthily with someone willing to hold him like a father should.
The Man Who Raised Dazai
Everyone whoâs read Beast has questioned it: Why did Dazai in his right mind have Mori take care of an orphanage? Why did he save his life? Better yet, why is he so nice?! I have come up with some speculation on why Dazai would.
âBeast Dazai recognized this potential of change either from the multitude of universes he was able to witness or recognized it in his own considering canonverse Dazai never does anything against Mori (even if he visibly dislikes him).â
âPossibility is one thing, the why is another. It was either that he saw potential and good that could come out of this in the long run, Moriâs intelligence and expertise still proves usefulness, less dangerous for Oda in the long run if he let Mori stay there instead of the Mafia, or all three.â
(Didnât feel like rephrase them)
We canât know anything for sure about his decision, but I do know Mori is the type of character to sacrifice his feelings for what he thinks would logically benefit the sum, and thereâs no better way to release yourself from that too-calculative responsibility than to remove yourself from it and to be in a place where youâre allowed to care for others and express yourself when there is no greater purpose than to just grow.
What happened with Yosano is undoubtedly wrong, but Mori had put away any sympathy in those situations because he needed her to do what he brought her in for. I was confused by his declaration that violence should never be used to educate children when I read it, especially out of his mouth, but now I understand. He would know with certainty that itâs not the right way to educate children, particularly because this is a Mori that hasnât been in the dark for these past years and has grown to care for these children at the orphanage without any greater intention for them.
Heâs not like the Old Director because he has no reason to think these kids would end up the way he did. Theyâre just kids that need someone to raise them with kindness, kindness will be what gets them through life as functional adults. Abuse has too many drawbacks to be called an optimal solution here. Is it surprising that all it took to change Mori was the kindness and salvation Dazai offered to him when he took over? Can you believe it was that simple to treat someone like a human being instead of a figure of hate?
What sticks out to me like a sore thumb is that when heâs introduced in Beast, heâs referred to as the man who raised Dazai. He is, regardless of what you think, the closest thing Dazai has to a father figure. In regards to how the fanbase speaks of their relationship, itâs hard to think that he cared about Dazai, but he did and the extent of how bad it got between them is grossly exaggerated.
As many comparisons Dazai gets with Yosano, their relationship with Mori is very different. Unlike Yosano, he did not need to be forced to do anything with psychological abuse and he did not need to be torn down to do what Mori asked him to. We donât know what happened to him to become like this, but it wasnât because of Mori. Yosano had light in her and a motivation to do the right thing, but Dazai didnât. Dazai is no stranger to any violence or using violence himself even before Mori if he's this desensitized.
Itâs useful that Dazai is like that when he meets him, up until it isnât. Heâs moody and actively looking to die. Mori canât predict him that easily and Dazai can see right through him. Thereâs another huge difference between them though: Mori sees himself in Dazai. We donât have enough insight in his head to make conclusive statements, but I think this is why he cared for Dazai. Itâs not because he saw a child struggling that he cared, but grew some fondness because he saw a little mini-him. When he drove Dazai out of the Port Mafia, he expected him to come back and take back his vacant seat.
Eventually, Dazai will come back and realize that petty anger about someone dying is illogical in somewhere like the mafia. But because of him not being able to see through Dazai and seeing himself in him, he also expected him to eventually usurp his seat if he stayed any longer. That is why he had invited Mimic at the time he did and manipulated the situation so Oda, someone he knew Dazai cared for, would go and take care of the situation flawlessly. Heâd be sacrificed and Mori could get something out of it, a Skilled Business Permit. A perfect plan⌠in theory, but Mori was wrong and miscalculated on many levels because of how many assumptions he made about Dazai.
First, he wouldnât have known that it was Oda who held the words that would convince him to leave the mafia and go into the world of light. Dazai will never come back to his own volition. Second, as those panels quite literally tell you, Dazai was never planning on killing him. He saw his place in the mafia and saw that he was needed there. When Mori finally realizes his mistake with Dazai 4 years later during the Guild Arc, he canât go back. His plan was still perfectly sound and he still got what he wanted out of it. He shouldnât regret it, butâŚ
Now thatâs been paved out, where does wanting to save Dazai fit into this? If I had to assume, itâs the same reason he didnât shoot Dazai for leaving his office during Dark Era. He cared about that boy, for 4 whole years he left him and his seat alone when the logical thing he should be doing was replacing him, but as much as he mightâve cared, he needed to put the mafia first. He didnât let him die because of his use, but also because of their so-called âcommon destinyâ in his eyes, a diamond in a rough he mightâve disposed of otherwise if he didnât see his potential. Thereâs not much he couldâve done for Dazai here except keep him healthy and alive. Mori gets tons of flack for not trying to help him, but there's nothing he could've done, not in their position.
He can't cultivate his potential if there is abuse involved because there is no logical reason for him to do anything to Dazai. You guys have to stop assuming the worst when it comes to Mori, youâre missing huge character details that are right in front of you. The difference between Mori, the Boss of the Port Mafia, and Mori, the Orphanage Director is that he had time to rekindle his humanity so heâs able to care about him like a normal human being, feel guilt, and admit regret after Beast Dazai has died. Mori at most was responsible for ingraining tactical strategies and theories and molding him into the perfect Mafioso and right-hand man.
Not to say any of those arenât a bad thing. Heâs still a child and having him use his desensitized, intelligent mind to build the potential in what he could do for the mafia, itâs just that heâs responsible for very little in Dazaiâs personality. The only answer I could give about Dazai being abused by Mori or being abused under the credentials that heâs a child in a violent, unsafe place is the same answer given earlier for Chuuya: in his case, not really.
Regarding this, I retract my statement about anything Iâve said about Beast Atsushi not being a victim in his time in the mafia, but I still hold my stance that heâs not the victim of the port mafia. I want to say the same thing about Beast Dazai and Atsushi that I do here, but considering he picked him up and trained him like how he trained Akutagawa, thereâs a great chance Dazai emotionally abused him when you read their interactions. Not physically as that would make him too much like the headmaster, but just enough emotional distress in bringing up traumatic moments to manipulate him into doing what he needs of him.
Itâs not a good relationship, but Mori wasnât targeting Dazai in any real way like the Director and Atsushi or Dazai and Akutagawa. Unlike every other section, I have to conclude that he didnât do anything to Dazai in that regard other than treating him like another adult when he shouldn't have. I donât have much to say negatively about their dynamic otherwise. Just a weird, terrible son with his weird, terrible father. Itâs more like someone who's taking after their mentorâs teaching and methods rather than an abuse victim echoing their abuser. This is why I don't accept the âCycle of Abuseâ as how the fandom understands it. It tells me a lot that people resort to the blame game.
I wonder what Dazai and Moriâs relationship would've looked like without any of this in the middle. Maybe something in cadence with Ranpo and Fukuzawa, but I can't help thinking that accepting Atsushi as his son in Beast instead of a student wasn't just for Atsushiâs sake. He was about to call him his student too, but immediately changed his mind. He already admitted he was helping him because of what happened to Dazai, so it canât be a huge jump to think that in the same way this is Atsushiâs redo in building a relationship with a father figure, this is Moriâs redo to give him some atonement for the boy he failed.
A Motherâs Love
Kyouka, when we first meet her, appears as a force to be reckoned with. With skills a young girl shouldnât have, and a demon shadowing behind, sheâs a terrifying opponent. Quickly though, that appearance falls short in tragedy when the bomb Atsushiâs after is found on her own body and when he asks if she truly wants to kill... She has no answer, but her actions speak clearly. She gives him the defuser because she doesnât want any more people to die, but the man behind the phone will not let it defuse.
So Kyouka does the next best thing to save more from dying: falling off the train with the bomb thatâs about to go off. As long as she dies with it, nobody can use her and her abilities to massacre the people on the train when the bomb eventually fails to do what is necessary. Because thatâs when Atsushi realizes that she cannot control her ability herself. No matter what she genuinely wants, she will never have the ability to obtain it because of this one fact. She can only be what people tell her she is.
We all know this story well, she gets saved by Atsushi and the man behind the phone is Akutagawa. Atsushi offers her the same kindness Dazai extended to him regardless of his reputation and destruction because itâd only be the right thing to do. He knows her incoming fate of eventual death for her crimes, he canât do much, but she should at least experience normalcy this one time.
When sheâs about to turn herself in, Akutagawa stops her and tells her she did her job well as a decoy for him to capture Atsushi. I donât know if youâve noticed, but thereâs a peculiar oddness about Akutagawa here in his attitude towards Kyouka. In all logic, even though she is a strong tool to the mafia, sheâs a low-level member, a disobedient one at that, and shouldâve been killed on sight for her betrayal considering how quick he is to violence, but he talks as if nothing even happened. He brushes off any thought of her dying as sheâs spouting nonsense and that sheâs going to go back to the mafia as normal.
But then he spouts off about how sheâs better off dead on the ship if she stops killing. Whatâs up with that? Itâs not completely obvious at first, but heâs projecting his own experiences in the slums and beliefs formed from Dazaiâs mentoring onto her. From his time when he wasnât in the mafia, he tells her thereâs nothing left out there for people like them, thereâs only rock bottom. He can confidently say that there is nowhere that would accept her for her ability, demon snow, because itâs the same for him.
The only way her life can have value is to kill to be useful, just like any good mafia member. Itâs exactly why that flashback with Dazai happens here. Heâs the one who fed him these thoughts heâs lived with for these past 6 years, and what sheâs been believing for 6 months. He doesnât loathe her, he sees it as doing a favor for her. What else can a little girl who can kill be use of except to kill in her circumstances?
Contrary to popular belief, he is not her abuser and is not the same thing Dazai was to him. He neither trained her nor did we have information on their relationship to come to that conclusion. The only thing we know is that he was the one sent to pick her up by the Port Mafia. We can prove she is not the way she is because Akutagawa since Beast, well, exists. She is one of the few characters I can confidently say was a victim of the Port Mafia itself and not just a person of the Port Mafia specifically.
Akutagawa was trying to be what Dazai was to him, but he is selling a bastardized version of it to her. The person who was her Dazai was Atsushi, the same person who was given Dazaiâs act of kindness. Someone who has experienced the same things Akutagawa has and is living proof that she can hope for something better.
He could see that the same revenge and lack of regard for her life in her eye was the same kind he met Dazai with. Despite that, these lessons heâs internalized have helped no one, not even himself. She canât find meaning in something that is the root cause of her suicidal ideation. This life is unfulfilling for people like them who need meaning in life. Akutagawa doesn't realize this because he still has Dazai to be his motivational goal. Thatâs why he failed to help Kyouka, Dazaiâs efforts wouldâve been considered an utmost failure too if he wasnât actively trying to fix that misunderstanding. Kindness is what actively saves us and helps us grow, the harm in abusive environments will only stunt us. But what happens when kindness is offered to us, but nothing comes out of it except proving us right that weâre unsavable? Then you have Kouyou.
Kouyou is the second person I could say was a victim of the Port Mafia. She has the same belief Akutagawa had about people like them being unable to be saved, so the only thing they can do is embrace it. I canât claim she was Kyoukaâs abuser either as we again donât know enough, but that doesnât change that her behavior is emotionally abusive, and is a much better contender than he is.
Sheâs doing the same thing Akutagawa was doing himself. Seeing themselves in this child and doing what she âneedsâ instead of what she wants. Just like him, she views this as saving her from the hands of light that will never make room for them and will ignore everything else she says. When Akutagawa is faced with her âdisillusionmentâ, he⌠accepts it when she refuses his will and chooses another path, but almost kills her to spare her from that decision that would âdoomâ her.
Kouyou is much less accepting, opting to kill the root source of this hope itself, Atsushi, because her fondness for Kyouka prevents her from leaving her for dead. In contrast to Akutagawaâs attempt at being what gives her life meaning, Kouyou wants to stop Atsushi from being like the same man who also gave her hope that they could escape to the world of light. She canât bear to see Kyouka go through the same realization she did far too late.
I can see what you're thinking, why am I reluctant to call either of them Kyoukaâs abuser? Even if Akutagawa doesn't count, shouldn't Kouyou count because she seems to have an actual relationship with her and her effects are prevalent in Beast, the same points I mentioned to debunk accusations against him? Sure actually, but think about it like this. What the Port Mafia does have in common with real situations is that this is a community that is full of victims who refuse to process their traumatic experiences for any reason, and bring down others to their level when they donât fit in their narrative to justify whatâs happened to them.
There isnât just one abuser weighing over you, there's this collective pressure from so many who aren't your abuser but they still contribute to your abuse with their presence itself. If Dazai wasnât there in the mafia, would Akutagawa's situation have changed? Yes. Now if Akutagawa or Kouyou werenât in the mafia, would Kyouka's situation have changed? Not at all. Sheâd have fewer examples to refer to, but sheâd still be abused. If itâs easier to imagine, think of it similarly to cult mentality and how they keep you in cults. That is the reason I emphasized being a victim of the Port Mafia instead of an individual. Kouyou, Q, and Kyouka, while you can pin their main perpetrators on certain people, their overall situation doesn't change.
Now why doesnât she just use the phone herself instead of letting people call Demon Snow for her? Wouldnât she have more agency that way? Atsushi proposes this, but she rejects it instantly. Itâs a very simple answer, itâs the same reason she canât bear to look at it outside of when sheâs forced to use it in combat. Itâs her ability that killed her parents and why she was forced into this position.
Itâs not hard for a little girl to believe sheâs nothing more than a killing machine when she sees that night her ability would mercilessly kill her parents. She eventually caves when Kouyou points out how quick she is to vindicate violence to protect that hope she desperately wants a part of, and how she will never change. Her first mission with the Armed Detective Agency is proof in itself. Was Atsushi going to keep extending his kindness after hearing what she could only blame herself for?
Kouyou is a character Iâve seen that gets a lot of double standards compared to all of the other characters Iâve mentioned with abusive tendencies and is almost purely liked. Sheâs not seen as an absolute monster (The director, Mori) or controversial with one side containing pure dislike and another pure love (Akutagawa, Dazai), itâs only that sheâs a well-written, sympathetic badass girl boss. Itâs either because sheâs a woman, that she doesnât use an overt intimidation style, that her motives are more obvious in their emotional influences, or all of the above that sheâs not treated the same.
Kouyouâs motivations are not special, as Iâve said. The only thing that differentiates them from the others is that theyâre not covered by a mask of indifference. As fond as she is for her, sheâs not much different from anyone else who holds the mafia up in high regard. She weaponizes her words in where theyâd hurt the most so Kyouka would come with her. The entire last section of their battle sums up with her saying, âKyouka come with me, theyâll only use you for your Ability when they get a hold of it. Even if the mafia did the same thing, at least theyâll accept you for who you truly are: a natural-born killer. You donât have to fight anymore, Iâll protect you.â
When Atsushi finds Kyouka once again subsequently in her disappearance, she chooses to embrace her violence to help the Armed Detective Agency in this fight with the Guild. After her walk in where she used to reside, she comes the the conclusion she no longer belongs there. Against Kouyouâs wishes, she will brandish her blade for a home. That blows up in her face the moment she starts. Atsushi gets taken, and itâs just as Kouyou said would happen. If even her violence doesnât get her wish, then what can she do besides leave herself to her fate?
As someone whoâs seen another with a talent for killing walk the path of good and is on that same path himself, Dazai talks to her. He tells her about how she hasnât gone through her entrance exam yet, how she isnât an official member because she hasnât proven her will or life on the line to help people she doesnât necessarily know. Kyouka doesnât believe she couldâve passed if thatâs what it takes, but Dazai doesnât agree with the points sheâs brought up. So what if sheâs killed or considered dangerous? That doesnât make her less qualified to be a part of the Detective Agency, everyone there is from different backgrounds.
She canât know everything, not even about herself. Nobody does, but it takes others to see more of yourself. Excelling in one area doesnât prevent you from nurturing your potential in another. What would that make someone like Atsushi, a person whoâs been her guiding figure throughoutâbut was never seen as anything more than a threat or a beast because of his ability before he joined them? The truth is, our lives arenât defined by one purpose the moment weâre born, itâs only something you can make for yourself. Weâre not the places weâve been raised in, not the ideas people apply to us, and weâre especially not defined by the traumatic experiences we had no control over.
All of it accumulates the person we are today, and we canât change that no matter how much we resent parts of our image that donât hold up to what society deems as right, but it shouldnât take control over what we want for ourselves. It isnât fair for the victims who were forced into a life where they had to fend for themselves, the children who had to navigate an adultâs messed up world that didnât have room for them to grow as kids should. Forced into a box where they stay unaware that theyâve ever left their motherâs womb, break out in fury with eyes that grew up too earlyâonly to become lost and thrown away, or rot in that box without a single person knowing they were a breathing, living human being.
I deem abuse selfish for this very reason. Kouyou is wrong for this very reason. If she finds comfort in her reasoning, then I canât critique her for her own choices and will have to respect her for choosing to stay in the mafia even when the old boss is dead, every abuse victim is different, but not a single person is born evil or good, in the dark or light. Not a soul has to stay in one place because they started there. Itâs going to be a hard journey to truly achieve what you long for, results arenât immediate and not everyone gets there no matter their effort, but still try. Try because itâs still worth trying, because youâre still worth more than you think.
In parallel, you can only get there as long as youâre seeking it. Too many see the Armed Detective Agency as something that will automatically save characters just by working there, but the only way it can help them is if they seek out their help themselves. The ADA is not the right place for every character, but Kyouka does want a place there. After her conversation with Dazai, she knows what she wants to do now. She will smash the drone sheâs in into Moby Dick so nobody will have to die, but sacrifice her own life in the process. Sheâs chained to this place, but her choices arenât.
She doesnât have to die with regret, with this she can pass the entrance exam and become an agency member like she wanted. She made a difference for herself just by this act. Itâd be a pretty melancholy arc if it ended like that, thank god we know it doesnât end like this. When you become a full agency member, you gain more control over your ability, meaningâ
Sheâs fine.
The exposition is over, letâs talk about Kyouka. Her arc is beautiful and the neglect to talk about her when it comes to her abuse story besides saying, âSheâs the one who stopped the abuse cycleâ and then nothing else is heartbreakingly superficial. She didnât stop it, itâs impossible to, but she did break out of it. Kyoukaâs section has more exposition than the others but I expected that. I wanted to save her for last because sheâs the only one whose arc has come to a peaceful conclusion and not unfinished, and the lighter message felt nice to leave off on.
I shouldnât berate Kouyou too much, the only reason she stayed in that room after being captured by the ADA is because she did want Kyouka to experience what she never had, and speaking with Dazai helped reassure her that Kyouka would be able to achieve her dreams. Itâs no longer the age of the old boss. As well as her shedding the truth about her parentâs death so she wouldnât have to resent her ability as not an avatar of massacre, but a product of her parentsâ love that will always stay with her. She didnât let go of the phone sheâs had this entire time because her mother told her not to let it go.
Me going over Kouyou in this fashion is not me saying you shouldnât love her character, I like her too. Itâs just that itâs passed over so fast what she did, but somehow Akutagawa is more at fault here is mind-boggling. Iâd get it a little more if this is because she redeemed herself by wanting the best for Kyouka over what was best for the mafia, but I doubt thatâs the case when that moment is talked about so little as well.
I genuinely need you all to understand that not every character is going to have a satisfying, clean conclusion like this. Akutagawaâs story is most likely not going to have a conclusion that satisfies everyone and you should respect it when it comes. Thereâs no perfect way of writing abuse, but thereâs no correct way of doing it either. I donât think Dazai is going to have the repercussions you want him to have any time soon. If you got the message from Beast, getting revenge on an abuser doesnât make us feel better or let us process what happened to us. Total resentment keeps us stuck.
The only thing that will heal us is the kindness so many offer in this series. You in no way need to extend that kindness to an abuser, you donât need to forgive them or let them into your life again, but be kind to yourself and donât let resentment prevent you from focusing on yourself. Forgiveness and reconnection are not the same thing. Donât be angry when a victim does want those things. Unless itâs character inconsistent, thatâs not something we shouldnât have any opinion on as the right or wrong way to go about their lives. What if later they do change their mind and want something different from what they originally planned? Thatâs fine too. Everyone is different. Donât give unsolicited advice to people who do not want it, let them decide for themselves. It is the best thing you can do.
The worst abusers are the ones who refuse to change and see wrong in what theyâre doing, but what about the ones who do want that? Then also let them heal. They did something awful, why isnât it a good thing they want to stop it now? You donât have to let them in just because they changed though. Apologies donât fix the damage already done, but to some victims, it feels nice to feel that whatâs been done to them is acknowledged. You donât want them to hurt others the way theyâve done to you, and neither do they. It hurts to let them forgive themselves when you havenât and never will, you want to see them suffer, but thatâs the only way things can change.
Dazai has changed, is he a good person even after what heâs done? I despise this question for any character of this series. Heâs grown so much, and if you donât think so, reread his conversation with Kyouka I beg of you. It is a far cry from his mindset in the mafia. A better person for sure, but a good person is hard to define for anyone in this series. The mafia is still the mafia, do any of them qualify as good people? The government, even if itâs the position of the right in society, is still an unjust system.
What a good person is cannot be an objective answer, people think there is but itâs not. A good person is how much we know about them and where our position in life affects our viewpoint. Prejudice values donât make you correct in what you think a good person is, being convicted of a crime, one you might not even have committed, doesnât automatically make you a bad person, being associated with a group doesnât mean anything about who you are, etc. Itâs all subjective in the end.
Meaning someone like Odasaku is essential in a story like this. He still has a presence in this narrative, even if he died in a light novel, because his existence pushes the boundaries of a âgood personâ in the fact his contradictory existence establishes itself. He failed in walking the path he wanted, but he doesnât regret it even in his dying moments trying to.
Afterthoughts
The themes of morality and humanity go hand in hand with the abuse present in Bungou Stray Dogs, so it was hard avoiding talking about this when it was necessary. I donât think itâs right of us to judge a characterâs path that isnât finished, in a story thatâs nowhere near done. Ultimately, Iâm only talking in a place of experience but never will it make me exempt from any personal bias. I tried to be as objective and nuanced as I could about this, and I hope it shows.
Abuse isnât one of those things that I can analyze from any logical stand point or take resources to back my statements up about abuse. Of course everything I say can be backed up, but abuse is a personal, human matter and weâre just human being trying to figure out more than we can handle. I just couldnât be comfortable with how people are now choosing to talk about Asagiri and needed to shed some light in what youâre missing.
Now I couldâve gone over Higuchi or Lucy because their stories also involve abuse, but I donât think I could say anything new about them without repeating points Iâve already said. We know very little about Higuchi and what made her so devoted to Akutagawa, and Lucy is pretty quick to summarize considering her story is just like Atsushiâs. Q is also a character to be brought up but I donât have enough information on them to say much about any abuse itself that happened.
Yosano was also an option but I donât think anyone had any trouble understanding her backstory. Well I was only really aiming to speak about whatâs not been spoken enough. Thank you for reading haha, god this thing is monstrous. Already got to 14k words by the time I was officially doneâŚ. I didnât know if I wanted to lean into character analysis or just exposition, I hope itâs a good enough mix of both. This took way longer than the 4 days I was planning to write this in.
I was later reminded that I could do a post on how their abilities functioned and reflect on their abuse/traumatic events, but I didnât think Iâd have enough room for that here. It could be a bonus post eventually? I donât think I did Kyouka enough justice in that aspect, but iâd just be beating myself up again about not making this perfect.
I hope I donât come off scary or a very serious person? Iâm very open to requests or discussions people want to engage in. Oh jeez, Iâll just embarrass myself if I keep talking. Writing this was a bit much, never really liked writing stuff myself. Sorry if glossed over anything, I wanted to stay on topic and not detail into something unnecessary.
The message BSD has is a pretty normal one, but thereâs something very special about how itâs written here and Iâm happy it exists. Maybe I shouldnât have made this so long? But thereâs so much to express sighâŚâŚ

It really saddens me to see Aziraphale get the full force of everyoneâs contempt over his reaction to the kiss & here's why:
What do we know about Aziraphale's true character? What they we been shown? Well, heâs a silly angel, who cares too much, loves his partner Crowley and truly wants to do what he believes is the right thing!
Don't get me wrong, I can see why a lot of people side and identify with Crowley after the final fifteen, given his trauma and the fact that he was the one making himself vulnerable by initiating the kiss.
But here the thing: itâs not like Aziraphale acted out of character after hearing Crowleyâs proposal. We, as the audience, have been shown multiple times when Crowley has begged for them to run away together and every time weâve seen it, it has been in a situation where Crowley wants to abandon all responsibility. Itâs a trauma response and I donât blame Crowley for being traumatized by Heaven and Hell. Just like I donât blame him for not wanting to go back to either.
But Aziraphale has never responded positively to this proposition before. The only difference this time was the kiss. A beautiful, desperate, awkward kiss!
Aziraphale has always been wired to take responsibility and direct action even when he shouldnât. For him, Aziâs personal code is to always do what he believes is the right thing to do, even if it might not end well. He gives the flaming sword to humanity, he saves Jobâs children, he discorporates himself to stop the apocalypse, he does the thing with the halo.
I just donât buy the narrative that he chose Heaven over Crowley. I think Aziraphale chose Heaven *because* of Crowley. He knew as long as he was in charge, he could keep Crowley safe.
Azi clearly loves Crowley despite his cognitive dissonance at all times. He can talk all the livelong day about how they "arenât friends," but his actions speak the opposite. He cares deeply for Crowley. Azi trusts Crowley, he lets him get âplenty of useâ out of the bookshop, he turns a neighborhood association meeting into a cotillion ball so that he can dance with him, he risked an eternity in Hell by wearing Crowleyâs face.
He also knows that Crowley always comes back especially his angel needs him. Unless Crowley does a 180 and returns to Hell to actively thwart Heaven out of spite (which ngl that would great television & a theory Iâd like to dwell deeper into elsewhere) this was just another disagreement and they will work it out somehow by working together. And hopefully learn how to communicate clearly!
The very root of the argument was misunderstanding and failure of communication on both sides.
The more I think about the âI forgive youâ line, the more I think it may have just been Aziâs gut reaction to read the kiss as one of Crowleyâs âtemptations.â Itâs a loaded word, but I think most people read the kiss as a last act of desperation to convince him to run away. In the past, we have seen Aziâs automatic response to what he feels like is a temptation from Crowley has always been to âforgiveâ him.
Is it irritating? Yes. Is it good communication? No. Is it a trauma response? I think yes.
I think thatâs why the ending of season 2 didnât upset me as much as it has upset others. I feel like I understand both sidesâboth how and why Crowley and Aziraphale make their decisionsâbecause the writing is so damn good.
*Aziraphale did not reject or abandon Crowley.*
That last look at Crowley before stepping into the elevator was not a âgood byeâ or a âfuck you.â I truly believe he looked back to remind himself why heâs doing what heâs doing in the first place!!!
Aziraphale is protecting Crowley because he loves Crowley and believes their relationship is not only worth making sacrifices for, but also strong enough to withstand them!

Okay, I'm glad you asked about the monologue because I'm like 99% sure that Byler is endgame and the 1% is because of the monologue. When I first watched it, I immediately was like "oh it's so over for us". At first I was so shocked because after Vol 1 I was 200% sure that Byler was endgame. Then I was like "wow, guess all these things we noticed actually meant nothing and all this time Mike was just straight". I also thought it was really bad writing because the love at first sight thing made no sense with what we saw in season 1. After a few weeks I started to believe in Byler again, and I realized all the little things that didn't feel right, like the fact that Will was in shot during the first "I love you" (not even blurred in the background, just right there next to Mike! that's crazy!), that we had reaction shots of other characters, the ugly settings... Now, especially after Noah's answer at the con, I'm so sure that Byler is endgame because everything (else) points to it and I don't see how Will can have his main character moment and coming of age without getting a romance, but every time I rewatch the monologue I'm back to doubting. I just can't understand why the Duffers decided to write this if they knew Byler was the endgame, it doesn't make sense to me. I don't think Mike was lying, that would definitely make the audience hate him (even more than they already do), I think he absolutely believes he loves her and he does but not in a romantic way. But the thing is, I feel like it's too complicated to explain to the audience in S5. People who rooted for Mike and El would feel betrayed and I would understand. The only thing that makes me feel good in all this is the fact that Mike was only able to tell El he loves her after Will confessed his own feelings disguised as her's. But is it that simple? Will the answer be "oh, I only said that cause I was responding to Will's feelings!". Like, he talked about the yellow t-shirt and all, he was actually talking about El, not Will. Sorry for this weird ask, I guess I just needed to rant about this because I feel like I'm the only Byler shipper that has a problem with the monologue and I feel crazy sometimes lol. If you have any insight that would make me understand what you think the Duffers' vision was, please, I'll take it!
Hi there! How are you?
Firstly, I can totally understand why the monologue would leave you uncertain, it's totally normal and I think is something most Byler may have struggled with to some extent.
But I do want to broach a few things, so this answer might be all over the place, just a fair warning.
Firstly, about Mike telling El that he loves her: He does love her, of course, he does. But love can mean so many different things to so many different people. He wasn't lying, but he wasn't being completely honest either. I think there's a nuance there we can acknowledge that doesn't turn Mike into an ass - he was terrified that El was going to die and Will pushed him to say things he may not have truly meant the way he assumed El wanted them to mean.
And while we might not want to admit, that Mike did lie when he told El he loved her the moment he met her, we know that is not true and it shows us that if he believes he loves her, he doesn't understand what love is or he's forcing himself into believing that was what love was.
Why would the Duffers write that monologue if they knew Byler was going to be endgame, knowing that people who root for El and Mike would feel betrayed?
This is where I jump in with a question of my own to you (that you absolutely don't have to answer if you don't want to). But what were your thoughts when Mike told Will that choosing him was the best thing he ever did? (Without the knowledge you had from the next seasons. Your honest thoughts as the scene was playing out).
And if you look at that scene now and compare it to the scene where Mike tells El he loves her, what would you think?
"When we stumbled upon her in the woods. It wasn't fate, it wasn't destiny, it was dumb luck".
"You never say it! I say it."
"Eleven, you are being ridiculous!"
"I love you on your good days and on your bad days"
"The day we found in the woods"
The vines tightened and Eleven couldn't respond.
" I was alone and I saw in the swings, and you were alone too.
I asked you if you wanted to be my friend and you said yes.
You said yes.
It was the best thing I ever done"
Will looked at Mike and the trance was broken, allowing him to use Morse code to communicate.
Besides the obvious fact that Mike's speech didn't work on Eleven, there's one thing that I keep coming back to. Mike talks about meeting Eleven as happenstance, as something that just occurred to him when he was trying to find Will.
He talks about meeting Will as making a life-changing choice.
El - Accident.
Will - Choice.
But the thing is, both of these moments were random. On the sense that El was just standing in the woods, and Will just happened to be sitting on the swings.
He chooses to take El home and to help her, but he doesn't present the idea of meeting her as something he chose at all, but rather as something that just happened to him when both moments were things that happened to him, in a way.
But only one of these moments is treated as something that Mike chose, as an action he took and that had repercussions for the rest of his life and we have to ask ourselves why.
I don't know if the Duffers wrote it like that on purpose or if I'm grasping at straws, but it was something that always struck me as odd.
I don't necessarily think the audience will have a hard time understanding that he doesn't love El romantically, I think most people can acknowledge there are multiple ways of loving people, and I also think there's a discussion to be had about Mike assuming he has to love El - which is something people can intellectually understand if the writers know how to work with it.
Is the answer that simple? Did Mike only say it because he was responding to Will's feelings?
No. Mike said because El was dying and he thought he had to, he said it because he does love her - but not like that - he said because meeting El has changed his life and he does care about her, and because she represents hope and security because Mike has seen people he loves and cares about hurt and El represents the hope he needed to keep going.
Above all else, Mike's speech did not fix what was broken, El didn't tell Mike she loved him too, she didn't tell him she understood why he couldn't say it before.
And if we go a step further to look at how other couples relate to each other, we'll notice a pattern emerging.
I do believe that if the writers present Mike's trauma, his scars, and his fears, if they give us the vulnerability of what he fears might happen to him and the people he loves, most people will understand.
I can't say for certain why The Duffers chose to do this, but I do feel like they wanted us to compare Mike's speech to El to Mike's speech to Will. From a narrative standpoint to how it was shot, recorded, and edited.
They wanted us to see that Will was someone he chose, while El was just someone he stumbled upon.

Okay. So Imma just come out and say it.
Y'all who read fanfic. You. Need. To. Start. Commenting. On. Fics.
I have been told I'm a great writer. I've been told I'm spot-on with characterization. I've been told I'm great at making readers feel and experience what the characters are feeling and experiencing. Been told it's like the reader is in the room as everything plays out.
However, when I see that my fics have upwards of 1K hits and maybe 100-300 comments and maybe 40-100 kudos and not even hitting triple digits in the bookmarks/subscriptions to a fic... Well, what would you think in my shoes?
Most likely, if you're like me, you're thinking all kinds of negative things (especially if you have mental illness/ADHD/neurodivergency of some kind). Stuff like... Oh, those other people are just being nice (not fair to them so I try not to think this way but negative self talk doesn't play nice with me).
Or I think... Okay so they checked it out. They had to click on the fic for it to even register the hit, right? So why don't I at the very least have more kudos? That's the easiest option on there (though it's like a like on here; if you are gonna leave kudos please also leave a comment), right? So what was wrong with my fic that I don't have more kudos at least.
But then I get on here and see so many comments and reblogs on FANART (still not enough for them either though lbr). THE POINT IS... If you read a fic. If you read it and liked it, you all really need to start commenting.
It doesn't even have to be long paragraphs or quoting or any of the ⨠big comments ⨠stuff. You could leave an emoji that be showing me what my fic or update got you feeling. You can do keyboard smash. If the author asks for it, you can leave constructive criticism (but only if the author has actively asked for it; if they haven't or given you permission, then don't). You can absolutely do big comment things too.
One of my favorite type of comments to get are the quoting ones. You just copy/paste and then say what you liked about it or what it made you feel or your reaction to it. Things like that. I love when my readers tell me their fave parts in an update. Or quote a line and tell me their thoughts and feels. Just yes.
We are far too advanced in this day and age and fanfiction and fandom are wholly more accepting than it used to be but for some reason, comments and reactions have become almost non-existent compared to when I was 15. And I was... Pretty cringy in my writing back then but I can admit that. But every chapter I'd get at least 8-10 comments. A chapter!
Even earlier in my Twst series I was getting A LOT more comments and with every fic it seems to have dropped significantly.
To me, to my brain, that tells me that my writing is suddenly sucky or I lost my talent or I'm not actually as great a writer as I was told because then why aren't more people commenting.
You might try to argue and say you're shy. Do you comment on order things? Do you tack onto a reblog to put out some addition to the original post? Do you chat with people in the fandom? Do you comment on fanart?
Then what makes a fanfic any different? (This is not including smut fics because I get but necessarily wanting it tied back to you. But if you open ao3 in a browser you aren't logged into ao3 on, you can (as long as the author has allowed it) post a comment anonymously. Yeah!)
You might say oh well I don't have time to comment right now. But you had time to read the fic? You had time to reblog that shit post? You had time to comment on the tags on a fanart you really loved? Thing is, unless you want to write a long one, comments do not take that long to leave. They really don't.
If you're worried the author doesn't want to hear from youâI'll stop you right there. The author ABSOLUTELY wants to hear from you.
So now is the time to stop making excuses to be lazy. You are reading really great fan literature for free. The least you can do as a thank you and to show support is to COMMENT. ON. THE. FIC.
And if you wanna really make an author's day and help support them and their work, REC the fic. REC the Author's work list. You can do that to friends you know would like it or even better, make a post about the fics and link your recs.
It's really not that hard and we should not have to beg. Realize the blessing you have that fics you would enjoy exist for free and do your part. COMMENT.

I have tried really hard to ignore anti nonsense. I just wanna focus on the good and positive side of this fandom and just enjoy the series in general. But it's also hard bottling up thoughts when I'm used to ranting for the sake of getting my thoughts and feelings out and moving then on.
So I'm gonna put a couple reactions to Anti-Related Hazbin things under the read more just to get them out! Because my god, some of these are bullshit!
Chaggie - I've seen so much bullshit citicizm for this ship. People claiming they're boring or bland or badly written and I have yet to see a legit reason why other than that they don't have any typical relationship drama (which, for the record, I personally am so relieved about) or because they're not being overly affectionate every five minutes of screen time. And you know, this especially drives me crazy because they have some of the sweetest little gestures, whether it be holding hands, hugging, swinging each other round or even just the constant damn heart eyes they have when looking at each other in the background! They're so damn precious and if you can't see that, you don't know what a legit established relationship is supposed to be past the honeymoon phase.
Charlie - People once again have claimed she's badly written. I don't know why people seem to hate happy kind hearted females so much but I have seen this exact complaint about many characters who are similar to her. None of which are actually badly written. They're just not the new stereotype "bad asses" that seems to be the only acceptable way to write a female character lately. Which is ironic since a lot of the so called "bad ass" female characters I have seen are often so one dimensional. Yet we have Charlie, a kind hearted but also sometimes naive girl who is doing her best while also learning with the rest of her friends and ya'll are gonna try and claim she's not amazing? The more I rewatch the show, the more I wanna reschedule my favorite character list because there's not a second I don't adore having her on my screen.
Niffty - This one really makes me want to slam my head against the wall. I have seen so many people complain and claim she acts like a child. Bare in mind, I've just watched episode 3 - you know, the one where Niffty is fully ready to throw herself into the BDSM that Angel takes them to. The only thing close to evidence that I have seen for her acting like a child is the episode where she gets drunk except she's still not acting like a child there, she's acting like a drunk! When some people are drunk they're silly and dumb and very "child-like". Otherwise, the only reason I think people call her a child is because she's is literally small like one. Yet, if you actually look at anything past her basic physical appearance, she's a crazy murder machine and I don't know many children I can also give that title to.
Angel - This is so old and everyone else has said this all so much better than me but I just really want to repeat: Just because it's not YOUR representation doesn't mean it's BAD representation. Just because you dealt with your sexual assault in a certain way does not mean everyone deals with it that way and it sure as hell doesn't give you a right to dismiss others. I have seen so many people say they identify with Angel's character and his hypersexuality, so it is so annoyingly arrogant to see people trying to shut them down entirely because Angel's character isn't portraying their personal reactions. It's just so amazingly self-centered to be saying that if you can't personally relate to it exactly, then it shouldn't exist at all. Seriously, grow the fuck up.
Loser Baby/Poison - Again, this has been said so many times before by other people but I'm gonna add/repeat. Some people take these songs and videos so damn literally. I saw someone claim Angel was happy during his dance with Valentino in Poison which apparently made the whole character a contradiction? Completely ignoring the parts where he's clearly miserable or the part where he's clearly putting on a fake smile or even the part where he all out says he dissociates to get through. And then you have Loser Baby where people are outraged that Husk call Angel a loser and is apparently trying to compare their situations? I mean, he's obviously not saying they're situations are the same if you think about it for more than two seconds. Like, are you seriously this literal? If I said the message went over your head, would ya'll look up?
#Hazbin Hotel#Mini Rant#Anti Anti's#Chaggie#Charlie Morningstar#Niffty#Angel Dust#Loser Baby#Poison#I have yet to see someone give these âcriticsâ#that doesn't also openly hate Vivzie.#And I'm not even going into the Vivzie bs because that's so old#and I'm so over these haters.#Anway#I'm gonna post some random positive screen shots now#cause I'm keeping my attitude happy for this fandom#because I genuinely adore so much of it#I'm not letting haters ruin it for me.

Omg, I just wanted to say I ADORE your characterization of Al and Vox! I don't even have the words to express how much I love reading your stuff, especially the Anon responses you post on here. The behind the scenes thoughts are literally my food, lifesource, its so good when people not only write characters IN CHARACTER, but also include stuff about their analysis/understanding of the character too.. I'm literally obsessed with breaking down characters and yk, cracking their chrome domes open to see how they work (which admittedly, I am not the best at <_< but I love reading them). Just wanted to say how much I love your writing. I had maybe 2 questions, please don't feel pressured to answer them :>
What in your mind (in reference to the 66.6 fics) would motivate Alastor to let Val get close to him in the first place? Or was that more you picking these two characters up by the scruff of their necks and plopping them into a hypothetical scenario to explore their character and write some fun intimate thingsTM?
What do you think of the dynamic of Vox and Al vs something like Lucifer and Al? Personally I've noticed that something Alastor craves, behind the mask of his static smiling persona, is attention. He's (at least how I saw it) usually peeved when people don't care about his absence, and seems especially bothered by the King of Hell refusing to really acknowledge him, so he goes out of his way to push Lucifers buttons (like calling himself a father figure to Charlie, IN FRONT OF HER ACTUAL FATHER LOL) whereas with Vox, Vox is literally CONSTANTLY thinking about Alastor. Man literally interrupted his regular TV program to do a segment about how much he totally didn't at ALL care about Alastors dissapearance or the fact that he returned (suree buddy). So Alastor can have more fun with him and annoy him by ignoring and messing with him on purpose.
ty if you do respond to this, sorry if it was hard to understand, sometimes I forget how to put the thoughts in my brain into coherent words!
Ahhhh, thank you very much, anon! I'm especially happy that you're enjoying my commentary on Tumblr, haha - I spent a while on Twitter because that's where all the fandom zines I was in were being hosted, but nothing beats Tumblr for giving me a nigh-unlimited word count and a captive audience for my rambling! >:D <3 I'm back to cocooning myself on the OG hell site.
Thank you for this ask, it really brightened my day! :D
As for your questions:
1. I'm assuming that was a typo and that you mean Vox (but in case you did mean Val: that was just a funny accident of him walking by the room! Alastor wasn't paying enough attention until it was too late), and to that I say:
I think Alastor allows Vox to take a go at him in canon because he finds Vox's obsession with him to be entertaining, but also because Alastor is kind of a narcissist and that same obsession massively feeds his ego, especially in a political climate that otherwise forgot about Alastor. Vox's whole "Who gives a shit about Alastor coming back?! Haha, now let me have a public meltdown and short out power to the whole city about it! Oh, fuck, why is he back, though?? Can we send a spy in to find out??" is exactly the reaction that Alastor wants every time he mentions his mysterious absence and gets brushed off.
At the same time, Alastor doesn't seem to register Vox as a sincere and genuine threat. He's a big enough fish in the Pride Ring pond that his obsession with Alastor is gratifying, but Alastor's self-absorption also doesn't really allow him to treat Vox as a threat tier above "annoying in a funny way, and also television is stupid." (Perhaps this will change in season 2... :eyes: (or perhaps Alastor will get Even Worse) (please god let him get even worse))
So those two things in combination make Vox the perfect candidate for Alastor to experiment with while maintaining his ego and not feeling particularly threatened. Despite Vox's Safeword 101 talk, Alastor would never put stock into that system with Vox unless he was certain that he himself would be able to back up a 'no' with overwhelming force. Him even considering safewords in the Live On Air! series is less for his own sake and more a politesse he offers on Vox's request to warn Vox to slow the fuck down before Alastor tries to put his insides on the outside.
2. And in direct contrast, we have Lucifer...
... Who Alastor obviously actually cares quite a bit about, because he's a whole nother power tier from both Vox and Alastor, and furthermore and possibly even more importantly, a credible threat to Alastor's relationships and standing in the hotel. I think a lot of discussion I see about Alastor prodding Lucifer seems to talk about how quickly he got annoyed about Lucifer's comments, but that misses the fact that he was pissed off before Lucifer even showed up. He got pissy the moment he saw the welcome sign, actually! And I wager that he was narratively absent for the scene where Charlie actually calls Lucifer because he would have done his best to manipulate her out of doing so had be been there.
And given that the two clearly haven't met before (though obviously Alastor knows of Lucifer - and hates that the inverse isn't true, hah), it's not 100% clear exactly why he's immediately so annoyed, but in my personal view of things and barring something like "he's projecting onto Lucifer because his contract is with Lilith," I think that what we know of Alastor's personality points most strongly to "he liked being the hotel's benefactor and sees it as His Project, and doesn't like the idea that Charlie called daddy for something that she thought mysterious, powerful Alastor couldn't handle." He distracts a lot with obviously-goading comments about practically being Charlie's dad in his duet with Lucifer, but underneath that he puts a lot of emphasis on the work he's done for the hotel and the fact that he's been supporting Charlie and the hotel from the start, so why the fuck is this deadbeat asshole suddenly turning up?!
Tl;dr: Charlie missed her insight roll on Alastor's personal investments and he's sooooo offended - and taking it out on Lucifer!
I think one of my favorite things about both Lucifer and Alastor is that they both sooo obviously belong in the Pride Ring, hahaha.

how to write good unrequited love
UGH THE BEST TROPE rahhhh I get so in love with those fics
*sigh*
but it is hard to write.
What is unrequited love?
It's when A likes B but B has their head up their ass and doesn't like A back (smh). There are lots of avenues for this to take place - best friends, missed the chance, right person wrong time, etc etc.
What makes unrequited love compelling?
There has to be drive, tension, change and growth.
Drive: Why is A so in love with B? Even though they know the circumstances aren't in their favor, why do they continue to pursue them?
Building off of that; what emotion do they feel strongest regarding the situation? Are they mad? Devastated? Determined? Frustrated? Optimistic? The strongest emotions will motivate their actions when interacting with the love interest.
tip: apathy is not a strong choice. If you have ever been in love/had a serious crush (if ur aro idk what to tell you) it's not just 'eh whatever' when they reject you. Though that is a weak emotional choice, it could be the way A presents their emotions.
emotional choices and emotional motivation are two different things. we'll get to that later.
Tension: Does the rift between them have potential? If there is no way in hell that the two are ever getting together and every chance feels cynical, it loses intrigue fast. However, you can still have a doomed relationship if you hammer home the pivotal moments. When do they realize it's impossible? How do they feel? How does that influence their further decision making?
If it isn't doomed and has potential, show the potential. Build up the hints and clues throughout. Flashbacks might be interesting, especially if the two have a history. pining is beautiful. that desperate yearning, where they mentally obsess over their person for days and days? gorgeous, love to see it.
Change: Loving somebody who doesn't love you back causes lots of tension and emotional upheaval, as mentioned above. How does the nature of the preexisting relationship change during this period of stress? Do they drift apart? Why do they drift apart? Does it flip a switch and sparks fly? Is it more plot oriented; does a secret come out that changes everything?
Growth: Both people should grow from the experience. Being in a trying situation such as lost love does a lot to somebody. Character arcs should shine through. Maybe they'll be introspective and realize 'oh, they don't like me because I have xyz habit, let me change that.' Don't let it all be in vain.
Emotional choices versus emotional motivators:
Just because someone feels one way doesn't mean they act accordingly. Some people put on a smile despite being mad as hell. Others cry with joy.
if your character has a default emotional response to everything, that character is Boring As Fuck.
we write stories, not nutritional labels. give it some juice. nobody acts like that except Mark Zuckerberg. Epitome of a saltine cracker.
I digress.
When considering the emotional motivation your character adopts for pursuing the love interest, it's important to dissect why. Already, you should have the obstacle of the relationship outlined. A new partner, bad breakup, wrong timeline, yeah yeah yeah.
How does that obstacle relate to the plot? How does the plot relate to the character(s)? And why would the combination of those two variables create the emotional reaction?
From there, look at the character's personality. How do they handle conflict? Would that be different if the conflict involved someone they care about?
(btw - i write out the questions for you guys to answer. Thinking about it yourself with your own writing background will help you integrate the skill into your system rather than having to follow a method that might not work. I'm not trying to be rhetorical - these are for your benefit.)
That's where the emotional display should come from. That dissonance between how they feel and how they act.
last point:
make it believable. make the audience root for the main character/budding relationship. inner monologue is a bloody brilliant thing in these stories. Those moments of despair and yearning connect with everybody on some degree. milk it dry. common goals, shared interests, relatable quirks. golden.
that's all! byee xox
