you try to hide your sickness from the team.

you weren't really sure what was wrong with you, but you felt awful. it was the kind of sick that would have gotten you off from school whenever you'd been living with your parents. things were a bit different in barcelona with alexia, but you knew that she'd make you miss practice if she found out. sometimes, you wanted nothing more than a break from everything, but there was a big game coming up and you wanted in the starting squad.

that was why you had woken up extra early to make sure that you looked healthy. alexia was none the wiser, even if she had given you weird looks for wearing makeup. luckily, she didn't quiestion it much since a few of the girls had been teasing you for your very obvious crush on another one of the younger players.

"don't take too long getting ready," alexia warned as she let you stop into the locker room. unlike her, you hadn't just worn a training kit in. but you also didn't like to literally start things off by running some laps. you thought alexia was crazy for warming up for her warm ups, but you suspected that was what she needed to stay in such good shape after her injury.

"oi, little chick, are you feeling alright?" ona asked as she stepped up beside you. the team liked to tease you for being wound up for certain things, and your posture was one of them. you were a stickler for perfect posture, unless you weren't feeling well.

"just a bit tired, ale woke up me up earlier than normal." it wasn't a complete lie. you reminded yourself to stay sitting and standing straight for the rest of practice. occasionally one of the other girls would come up and ask if you were alright, noticing that you did seem a little off. luckily, you could pass it off as being tired, but as the day dragged on, it was getting more and more difficult.

your cover had nearly been blown in the gym during the day's lifting session. since you were trying to build up a bit more muscle mass, you trained with the keepers. you had counted on sandra being protective in the motherly way that she always was, but you hadn't expected cata to be keeping such a close eye on you.

"drop the weight down and step away," cata ordered. she had been spotting you on the squat rack. you were still in the lighter part of things and definitely shouldn't have been making the wheezing sounds that you were. "you know the rules. are you trying to hurt yourself?"

"what's going on?" if it was just sandra or alexia, you could have gotten away with claiming that cata was just being mean to you, but when irene joined the group, you feared the jig was up.

"there's something wrong with (y/n), she's wheezing!" cata exclaimed. alexia reached out to feel your forehead, but you ducked out of the way. unfortunately, sandra was able to grab you and irene placed the back of her hand on your forehead.

"she's warm, but she was also going really hard today at practice," irene said. she glanced over at alexia to help decide what they should do with you.

"she's sick, probably with whatever bruna had last week," cata said. you sent her a nasty glare, but the older girl was unphased by it.

"how do you feel?" sandra asked as she turned towards you.

"i feel fine, maybe a little tired, but alexia woke me up this morning. i'd like to finish my workout please," you said sweetly. cata scoffed as sandra let you go. sandra, irene, and alexia all kissed the top of your head as they apologized for interrupting you. cata was obviously mad at you, so you walked over to finish your workout with lucy and the other defenders.

at irene's insistence, you kept things lighter. you didn't notice cata telling alexia to keep an eye on you, so you had no idea that alexia was watching your every move after your shower. she cursed herself as the two of you got home when you let the facade slip a bit. it was obvious with your makeup washed off that you were not well. she should have listened to cata the first time and made you go sit down.

"what game are we watching tonight?" you asked from where you had already curled up on the couch. alexia sighed as she glanced down at you. it was usually a hassle to get you to watch games, and as much as alexia wanted the win, she also wanted to instill good habits in you as well. there would come a day when you'd go somewhere that she couldn't keep an eye on you, and it terrified her a little bit.

"we can start watching a game later, i wanted to talk to you first. how have you been feeling today?" alexia asked you. she made sure to use her gentle voice, knowing that you didn't do well wtih being lectured otherwise.

"well, i've been a bit tired, but otherwise okay. did cata really get it in your head that i'm like, sick or something?" you tried to make it as believable as possible that you were feeling fine. one pointed look at alexia had you mumbling out the truth with tears in your eyes.

alexia sighed as she pulled you into a hug and reassured you, "you're not in trouble this time, but don't do it again." you nodded with your head against her chest. you did start crying, and soon the tears turned into a pretty nasty coughing fit. alexia was quick to get up and get you a glass of water and some medicine. she took your temperature and texted jona whenever it came back way too high.

"i don't want to miss the game," you whined. alexia didn't seem to care as she tucked you into the couch. "i've worked so hard to get to play. please, ale, i want to play."

"if you feel better by the end of the week, we'll see about you subbing on. that just means you need to rest up until then," alexia told you. you'd do anything that she told you to if it meant that you'd get to play in the game. alexia seemed to know that because she had you spending the week watching all of the game film and taking notes that you could manage. whenever she had to be away, she left you in the care of olga, who definitely slipped you more sweets than alexia would ever allow and watched tiktoks with you on the couch for hours at a time.

SO this show is from like 2021 so like a lot of y'all have probably already watched this, but for those of you who haven't and want to suffer, this post is for you because jiejie loves you 😘

what: modern kdrama // completed // 16 eps, roughly 50 mins each where: netflix // viki why: this was sold to me like this (verbatim) - think eat the rich courtroom shenanigans with morally grey judge who is also extremely hot

little bit of background - setting is in a dystopian, post-pandemic south korea. to instil faith in the judiciary, they've basically reality-showed court proceedings. viewers can vote to sentence the defendants through an app. this Live Court is presided by:

JUDGE #1 - the morally grey but extremely hot judge in question, kang yohan

where do i even START with kang yohan. unloved (unwanted, really) second son of a rich family. his terrible dad used to keep him in the basement, and was v abusive, but he had a brother he loved and loved him v much. inherited the family fortune when his brother and sister-in-law died in a tragic fire (the circumstances of the fire is......sus). lives in a huge ass mansion with his niece (elijah💕) who for the better part of the show is shown to suspect he killed her parents for their fortune. kind of a vigilante (except self-serving, mostly).

this is the star of the Live Court, makes essentially all the decisions, mostly without much consultation with his associate judges, which procedurally is not right, but you'll v soon learn that kang yohan does not give a fuck about the rules, and will do whatever it takes to achieve his goal of taking the social responsibility foundation (SRF; basically a foundation run by the elite rich of the country driven by public donations) down.

JUDGE #2 - also somewhat morally grey and also hot associate judge, kim gaon

sweet boy. just wants to Do Things Right. starts off a stickler for rules. he's introduced as being put on the Live Court panel by his mentor to watch over kang yohan and to stop him when he makes extreme decisions (which kyh being kyh does on the daily). lost his parents when he was still in high school because a fraudster scammed his parents of their live savings. is huge on Justice.

this boy is extremely suspicious of kang yohan, and sets about investigating him with the intention of p much revealing his crimes. somehow gaon goes from that to uhhhh living at kang yohan's house, becoming elijah's adopted dad, making dinner for them??? WELL. all for the investigation, right?? gaon sacrifices so much for justice, what a good boy.

JUDGE #3 - a lot less morally grey but still extremely hot associate judge oh jinjoo

MY GIRL 💖 we (tragically) don't see enough of judge oh but she's Righteous, really earnest, super For The People, and a lot smarter than she plays off to be. huge kang yohan fangirl (same, 언니, same). used to sit in a more rural court, and this is her first time in the limelight. is ambitious, but not so much that she will put innocent people in harm's way.

(side note: as an actual to god lawyer who goes to court very frequently, i have not, to date, met a hot judge, but can say with confidence that if any of these three were presiding at my hearings, i would be a lot more enthusiastic about going to court.)

so the cases that the Live Court trials are high profile ones and often result in controversial sentences - kang yohan picks these cases, and they are, again, targeted at toppling the SRF. the key members of the SRF are the president, the minister of justice, several conglomerate presidents, and:

epitome of jiejie step on me please. introduced as a director of the SRF who assists the chairman of the foundation very closely. later inaugurated as chairwoman of the SRF. p much the brains behind the SRF.

grew up poor. possibly killed her mother when she was young. likes shiny things. low-key kang yohan obsession (same, 언니, same) stemming from the time she worked as a maid in their household when they were both young. vicious. will literally kill a man. will kill MANY MEN to achieve her goals (some murders are valid imo).

the rest of the villains are actually quite interesting as well, also low-key fond of minister cha but this post is already too long...

ANYWAY this show centres around kang yohan trying to take down all key members of the SRF through the Live Court - not all of it goes smoothly for him, because he has Meddling Sidekicks like gaon (bless his soul, but sometimes he does v dumb things with good intentions), but yohan makes things work!!

this show also ft. v homoerotic exchanges between yohan and gaon if you're into it (you should be) (is there fic where yohan rails gaon six hundred different ways because i feel like there is and y'all should point me in that direction thank you), found family vibes, extremely !!! plot twists (when i found out about the cause of the fire i was literally screaming). all the characters are interesting even if some of them (*cough*president*cough*) are annoying, and the pacing of the show is good - doesn't drag and makes you want to keep watching the next episode

LONG STORY SHORT: watch this, 11/10 would rec, thank you for making me watch this buddies, this is literally the first time ever i've felt like writing fic for a kdrama

I convinced my mom to try the live action One Piece, because she's the type to like this style of show even though she isn't into animation and would never read manga, but I didn't think I'd be able to convince my dad because he's usually a stickler for more grounded and realistic stories (his favourite genre is war movies, his favourite movie is Saving Private Ryan, for reference). But, when I brought up with him how I figured it probably wouldn't be his thing because it was fantasy, he mentioned to me that he does enjoy some fantastical stuff if it has like an internal universe logic, like Star Wars, and the more I thought about it, the more I remembered that he also enjoys campy fun action adventure stuff that doesn't take itself too seriously like Indiana Jones or Pirates of the Carribean.

And One Piece has both that internal logic for why people can perform crazy feats (even if it isn't explained right away) which I mentioned to him (just that there is a reason why people can do crazy things in this world), as well as the campy fun action adventure thing going for it, especially in the Live Action (the fight against Morgan's base even has a major Indiana Jones vibes ngl). So I explained that to him and asked if he wanted to try it, and he agreed to watching the first episode with me to decide if he'd watch it with my mom and me.

AND HE ACTUALLY SAID IT WAS INTERESTING SO FAR!! Like, he is NOT the kinda guy to enjoy anime or manga or even western cartoons, always refuses to watch anything anime and doesn't show any interest when I talk about it (I've managed to convince him to watch a few movies like Sword of the Stranger but it's obvious that even when he's not bored or doesn't hate it, it still doesn't catch or keep his interest), and he's really picky about anything fantasy or SciFi, if it like sets off his bullshit meter too much he starts nitpicking the logic behind certain abilities, or decisions, or explanations, etc. I once tried to get him to try Gravity Falls and he wanted to stop after the first episode. He's THAT picky.

So the fact that he actually laughed several times while watching the first episode of OPLA with me, commented about Luffy's character positively several times (he seems to think Luffy is really funny which surprised me cause I thought he'd be the most entertained by Zoro but I mean I can't blame him it is Luffy after all), never cringed or criticised or said anything about how ridiculous it was, means a lot coming from him cause he's always really blunt and honest about his opinion on this sort of stuff (which is fine I don't want him to pretend to enjoy stuff when he doesn't). He actually watched the whole first episode without it losing his attention, and seemed to have fun! And he agreed to watch the rest with my mom and me!

This sort of thing is one of the reasons why I dislike when people just dismiss the idea of live action adaptations entirely. I get that people are jaded with past failures, and don't like when live action is treated like a replacement for or improvement from animation when it isn't. But it is a valid medium just as much as animation or comics or writing are, and can be used to produce some amazing things. And the fact is, there are people who have a hard time connecting with other mediums who will otherwise never engage with this media in its original forms. Live Action, when done well and done right, can reach new audiences and welcome them into the fold in ways the original formats never can.

One Piece didn't need the live action to be popular, obviously, and the live action cannot and will not replace the original, nor should it. But I love that we get to have it alongside the manga and anime. It's just more of what we love, it's the cherry on top of an already stellar multi-layered cake. It complements the original rather than taking anything away from it. And for the first time in over a decade I might be able to share One Piece with my parents, who would only ever have a chance of experiencing it and enjoying it in live action. There's just something so awesome about that for me personally. I just wish more live action adaptations would understand what the One Piece live action understood about the adaptation process, and that's how to keep the heart of the story in-tact, so more people from more fandoms could have a chance to share something they love with more people who it would otherwise not reach.

Anyway, thank you Oda and the OPLA cast and crew for doing live action right for once!

Reimagining a Disney musical about "Rapunzel"

I started doing this with "Wish" and continued on with "Frozen," so why not do it for "Tangled"? My rewrites are more important to me, but spitballing these concepts are fun, too! I hope you enjoy what I have cooked up. BTW, I think the setting of "Tangled" was inspired by Germany, so I'd keep that for "Rapunzel"--though I wouldn't be as much of a stickler for the fashion here since the silhouettes and designs don't quite match up with my image for the characters.

Plot

The kingdom of Rampia is home to a witch. No one knows much about her, and no one dares ask. But one day, she disappeared, some say with her arms filled with gold. She vanished to the far reaches of the kingdom to an abandoned tower, coveting whatever she had like a miser. But what would happen when that secret escaped? What havoc would she wreak to get it back?

Principal characters

Rapunzel--Curious, athletic, and hungry for knowledge, she has lived in the tower all her life. Born with beautiful golden hair that is now beyond 100 feet long (and never gets dirty or matted), she was taken by the sorceress Gothel the day she was born. Despite Gothel's attempts to keep her at home, Rapunzel desires to see the world, and does so by escaping with Prince Rudolph, who one day manages to find the tower. While she returns to her family and forms a romance with the prince, the townsfolk do not take to her, seeing her as the daughter of a witch and destined to bring them unhappiness. They treat her similar to Pocahontas in her sequel film, both exotifying and fearing her, seeing her as inferior to them and yet more dangerous. Gothel retaliates to her escape and curses the kingdom with being surrounded by imprisoning the prince inside his own castle, using thistles to encase the area. She invites Rapunzel to come and save him, but warns that the young woman with have a reunion with her "mother" if she does so. The curse quickly turns people against Rapunzel even more, and she must venture into the maze of a castle if she wishes to rescue her love and his family.

Prince Rudolph--A handsome, cunning, sassy, and somewhat vain prince, he accidentally stumbles onto Gothel's tower, which was the last thing he wanted to do. Despite his skillset, he is easily frightened off, and the thought of coming face to face with a witch was enough to frighten him for life. He's actually got a soft spot for kids and animals, and can be quite helpful when the need (for him) arises. When he manages to capture the heart of the "witches' daughter," there is much debate, with concerns that Rapunzel put a spell on him, with whispers of getting rid of her (or even the monarchy itself) beginning to rise.

(Note: Have NOT established whether or not I'd make him Southern European or Middle Eastern in contrast to German. I'm just gonna keep his German name rn.)

Gothel--A woman who has lived long and seen much, she was denied a special herb by a man when she was pregnant, and was unable to save her child. In revenge, when the man needed an herb of hers for his own wife, she gave it to him in exchange for the child in her womb. She raised Rapunzel as her own, but as she began to look like her parents and act of her own accord, any affection Gothel might have felt for her turned to anger and envy for the child she lost, and abused Rapunzel mercilessly. However, she had grown so used to her company that she couldn't imagine life without her, and when she falls in love and escapes from the tower, Gothel vows to take everything from her until she's all she has left.

Music

All For You--A rather long song, dedicated to the heartbreak Gothel goes through to save her child all for it to be for nothing, and for Rapunzel's parents to trade her in order to save her.

Not Today--Similar to "Mother Knows Best" and "Stay With Me," Gothel continually stalls Rapunzel by outwitting her, thus proving she isn't prepared to leave the tower.

Fantasy--Rapunzel daydreaming about traveling, about how different the world is from what she's learned (because reading and experiencing are two different things), as well as Rudolph singing about his own dream of becoming king and how "easy" everything will be.

At Last--Rapunzel is finally free from her tower and able to explore the world that's no longer a fantasy in her mind. As she experiences the world with Rudolph, she realizes how much she's falling for him, and vice versa.

Never--Gothel attempts to bring Rapunzel back to the tower peacefully, but when she refuses, Gothel vows to take everything from her, saying "never say never; it's much longer than forever."

Be Strong--Rudolph sings this to comfort a scared Rapunzel as she works to free him and face Gothel, realizing that the world is just as dangerous as Gothel told her and feeling guilt for bringing Rudolph pain, though he states that with love comes pain, and that he wouldn't trade it for anything.

Tonight--The finale, a powerful ballad where Rapunzel reflects on all she's learned and seen, and how the next day could bring just as much trouble as the past few ones have, but tonight, she has peace, she has love.

Lemme know what you think! I don't hate "Tangled," but I'd have enjoyed some different things from a Disney musical about Rapunzel.

"Estranged" is a strong word but he's never been super close with his parents, after his dad died he only went back to see his mother once. She sometimes talked about taking him to see her relatives in Quebec, but they never had the time/ money. I think if he spent any time with his cousins they would get into. So much trouble (and now i kinda wanna see it)

Ahahahaha <3 Mulligan has a notoriously fucked up relationship with Jameson, the only one of his kids that he's actually met. He feels bad about it in like 7 different ways but is honestly glad that he wasn't involved in the child raising in any way. He would also rather not meet any of his other kids, but the gm has threatened a mariner's revenge/boy named sue situation and I would LOVE to see it

🍑 - Notable flings

There's Samantha, Jameson's mom, who didn't particularly want a child but was married to a high ranking military officer and needed the divorce to be his idea. (There's a lot of reasons Jameson turned out kinda fucked don't worry about it)

There's also Catherine, a fellow marine who slept with mulligan twice because her wife didn't really want kids (the first one was raised by their relatives). That was also a fucked up relationship but honestly that one isnt mulligan's fault

🗑️ - "It's complicated"

JAAACK jack halderson my beloved first mate badass engineer accounting degree non binary aromantic bestie. They have the weirdest fucking Thing with mulligan bc mulligan is stupid and thinks it's improper to develop feelings for "subordinates" even tho jack literally slept with every member of the last ship they were on INCLUDING the captain. And jack likes that mulligan isn't trying to sleep with them but also kinda wishes he'd Figure His Shit Out so they can get Real weird with it. But basically mulligan cares about and trusts jack more than anyone else in the universe. And jack claims that they only stick around bc mulligan owes them money. He keeps paying them back but they just gaslight him into thinking he didn't. So they're kind of extorting him but it's only bc they're being tsundere about it. Also mulligan physically put himself between jack and an attacking xenomorph bc he caaares. Jack is literally the only person he trusts with his ship. Also everyone assumes they're fucking and mulligan gets confused and flustered every time. AND ALSO when we were stuck on a backwater scrap heap with everything gone to shit & mulligan trying desperately to relapse into alcoholism, all of the other employees and stuff were absolutely terrified and refused to give him any sort of booze and he thought that Julio had talked to them (bc he's the ships surgeon and new to the crew and a huge bitch a real stickler) but NO we find out later that it was JACK who went around threatening people in order to keep mulligan safe and sober <3

If you can't tell jack is the love of my life and I would do anything for them and it's extra funny bc me and the gm were explicitly planning on NOT giving them any sort of romantic/sexual tension and then. It happened anyway. The unbreakable bond of a captain and first mate

Kris!! No worries!!! I’m so happy to answer these, but just keep in mind, they’ll happen far in the future once the two of them get through the many obstacles in their way (including themselves lol). This is WAY MORE long-winded than I had intended, so I hope it scratches that itch. I really do love writing for them, so ask as much as you want!!

12. Do they have a difficult time when separated from each other, or are they fairly independent?

Steve and Decks are both quite independent and business-oriented, so even when they’re together, their time can often seem scheduled. It’s not too difficult when they’re apart because neither one is particularly clingy, but in times of separation, they’re sure to schedule a call once every few days at least, if not, once a day. While they may try to be strict on that, it doesn’t keep them from not wanting to hang up the phone and saying “wait, one last thing before you go” to each other. But overall, they deal with it pretty well, or at least much better than Bucky and Bee. The only difference people see when they’re separated for a little is Steve starts to turn inward somewhat, giving terser responses and less warm gazes and conversations, and Decks becomes a little short-tempered, things bothering her quicker than they normally would for her already no-nonsense behavior.

14. Do they enjoy PDA, or are they more private with affection?

Do they enjoy PDA? Not really. They’re both quite private and appear proper to those around them. Sticklers for following rules and customs, and happy to keep that affection to themselves. The most you may see out in the open is hand holding or a forehead kiss, maybe a cheek kiss, but almost never lips. They’ll sit close and whisper jokes in each other’s ears, or roll their eyes at Buck and Bee, laughing quietly amongst themselves, but that’s pretty much it. Oh! And of course they enjoy a good dance😉

21. Do they enjoy domestic life?

Yeah, I’d say so. Decks and Steve already live pretty domestic lives on their own. They both have their own places, which comes with cleaning, cooking, maintenance, and bills. Steve has a cleaner employed, although he hardly uses them since he’s almost never home and can keep tidy on his own. He’s a big fan of meal prep and everything having a place. Due to his schedule, though, he tends to get home late, which often ends up in takeout food. Decks has no issue cleaning, but she’s honestly not the best cook. She can get by, and what she makes is edible, but it’s nothing like her parents can make and she’s just grateful she’s only cooking for herself in case her learning attempts fail. When she and Steve get together, she doesn’t want to be expected to cook for him. She knows how all those other mafia wives can be and she doesn’t want that expectation, and he doesn’t place it on her. She’s got her own life and doesn’t want to be subservient to a man. He wouldn’t have it any other way than an equal partnership. So Steve makes the effort to be home earlier, even if he has to leave again after to go back to work, just so he can spend dinner with her. She’s quite regimented on needing food in her mouth before 6pm, otherwise she’ll become an absolute troll, and not in the cute way. The two of them go to the bookstore and pick out and purchase a cookbook, finding recipes they want for the coming week so they can stock up on those groceries, and then learn to cook them together. When they’re not both called in to the weird demanding hours of their jobs, they lay on the couch, her cold toes tucked under his warm thigh, as they watch a show, and then after, she pulls up a YouTube video explaining the lore surrounding it. Side details: Decks also has a good deal of house plants, and as we’ll see in the next few chapters, loves a good pasta. Maybe one day the two of them will get a pet.

the brainworms have decided it's time for another ramble so on tonight's menu is Lan Qiren, no not like that please do not consume someone else's fictional uncle without said fictional uncle's consent. Vague spoiler alerts for character backstory and plot IG?

The running motif (might be the wrong word? Coincidence maybe?) of "younger uncle having to step in to parent the next generation because someone died or is Otherwise Unavailable" is really obvious with Lan Qiren. Very unfortunate for him, and I don't get to see a lot of interpretations of him in fandom that expand beyond the "stickler for the rules suffocating teacher ish figure" that we see of him re: the Cloud Recesses arc from Wei Wuxian's perspective. Therefore I'm just gonna slap some text into this post about all the things we don't really know about him but some stuff I assume or infer based on some shit in my brain yeah.

Lan Qiren, birth name and age unknown, is the younger brother of Qingheng-jun (name and age both unknown), and the paternal uncle of the Twin Jades of Lan. We know this cause both Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji address him as "shufu," which is the more formal version of the "-shushu" WWX uses for Jiang Fengmian. In the absence of any other known siblings or close blood relatives of the main branch of the Lan clan, this also automatically made him, from his birth until the birth and successful upbringing of (at least) his elder nephew, the sect heir to Gusu Lan. I say this because it's important context for the role he plays in both the sect and his nephews' upbringing.

I'll talk a bit about Qingheng-jun and how the choices he made re: Xichen's and Wangji's mother/their marriage completely ruined Lan Qiren's and his son's lives. I don't think we know much about Qingheng-jun and Qiren when they were younger until Qingheng-jun apparently meets his wife-to-be and the situation escalates until he married her to protect her from execution (?) and proceeded to punish their whole immediate family by choosing to go into seclusion as well. You might argue that it was a good thing he recognized what a disaster this all was and took some kind of punishment for it, but. But. As the oldest son and older brother, he serves as the future sect leader, role model for the disciples, and has the duty to not only lead the sect but also guide any siblings he has from "taking the wrong path," so to speak. His choosing to go into seclusion is a punishment, yes, but was completely unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. Even assuming his now wife was a guest cultivator of some kind, he would have been well within his rights to step back and allow the rules to run their course once she committed a crime, to be startled out of his infatuation (?) with her into realizing that maybe she wasn't a good choice (or the only choice) for the future sect leader's wife, do his penance, and then move on. So why didn't he? Love, panic or obsession?

His choice to be secluded himself with her can mean different things depending on how you interpret the Gusu Lan practice of seclusion. Is it physical seclusion only, or did he take it to the extreme and was completely hands-off for everything from sect affairs to his children's upbringing? Obviously he had kids with his wife but that would be allowable since you know, marriage and heirs. The fact that the kids' monthly visits to his wife are mentioned but none to him kind of suggests that he had a minimal role in his sons' lives. Also it's super weird in the context of filial piety and the importance of a father in that role ethic. Fortunately for plot purposes, this role (and the duties thereof) he so very conveniently vacates can also be fulfilled by Lan Qiren.

The visits to their mother could be excused under the guise of letting LXC and LWJ exercise their filial piety, i.e. their respect for their mother. But all other duties normally carried out by the husband and wife as well as the sect leader and sect leader's wife would fall on Lan Qiren and whatever sect members/servants/caretakers were appropriate. E.g., as a man, Lan Qiren cannot nurse his nephews until they're weaned, but can choose nursemaids and servants who have the right skillsets to care for very young children. When they're older but still not old enough to be granted courtesy names/live in their own households, he is the obvious choice for them to live with, so they can be taught the rules, proper etiquette, how to read/write, etc. Again, as an elder, this would be part of his purview as their uncle, but he would not be primarily responsible for these things in their lives if it weren't for the extenuating circumstances of his brother's disaster of a marriage. Also important -- it seems he's also the face of the sect and is entrusted with handling politically significant intersect matters such as the guest disciples and the whole incident with WWX punching Jin Zixuan, which tracks with him being the only other candidate in the main family to lead the sect in his brother's absence.

Politically Qingheng-jun would have been doing Qiren a favor because he wouldn't be as important otherwise as a second son, if it weren't for the fact that Qiren gets all of the thankless work with none of the recognition. Qiren's significance as sect heir expired as soon as his sister-in-law gave birth to two healthy sons, at which point he's just a placeholder until Lan Xichen comes of age, UNLESS both of his nephews die with no heirs. And by all visible criteria, he's done a fucking good job too! If he was power hungry and coveted his brother's position, he didn't have to do such a damn good job of raising his nephews that they became the first and second highest ranked young men of their generation, you know?

Speaking of heirs, why is Qiren raising his nephews alone? Given the familial and sect obligations he has on his plate, it would have been reasonable for the sect to shore up any instability by finding a good match for him posthaste, which would have the added bonus of giving any potential nephews a maternal figure in their everyday life to handle the manners and etiquette bit, at least. Depending on the amount of time between marriage drama and Xichen being born, I can think of a couple of reasons:

Gusu Lan came out the other side of marriage drama and collectively went, we're not doing that shit again, and conveniently does not give Qiren any marriage prospects.

The rest of the jianghu hears rumors about the marriage scandal and maybe isn't as eager to marry off daughters into Gusu Lan as they might have been otherwise (yes, Qiren isn't as attractive a prospect as a first son, but he's still unattached, unless he has a reputation that dissuaded prospects in the first place)

Lan Qiren came out the other side of marriage drama and internalized that trauma, or maybe wasn't the marrying kind anyway (see marriage dynamics of the other sect leaders in the Big Five), and went "oh fuck no"

Gusu Lan's elders saw that Xichen had a lot of potential from a young age, and decided marrying Qiren off with the obligations of his own wife, children and household would be distracting him from nurturing the sect heir(s once Wangji is born) that they already have, with special emphasis on Qiren teaching them The Right Way To Be A Lan and maybe even fobbing more stuff to do on him so he never has the time to court and get married. Normally such things would be under the watchful eye of Qiren's parents, or Qingheng-jun once their parents were dead, but as we've already established, sect and familial duties don't seem to be a priority for that guy so.

Depending on how shitty you wanna believe the Gusu Lan elders are, maybe Qingheng-jun made a deal with them that he would have no part in raising any children from his marriage to help protect the woman he loved, idk. Can you tell I'm not very sympathetic to him? As far as I can tell, he trapped his wife, his sons and his brother into the consequences of his own actions and is basically the whole reason for LWJ's tragic backstory™ because God forbid any sect heir in this series have a healthy father-son relationship, am I right?

And then Qiren has to watch his younger nephew get whipped to within an inch of his life for finally breaking the rules (that he taught Wangji) they lived under so disastrously, and then his older nephew is so torn up about all the fun, fun revelations from Guanyin temple that history repeats itself and Xichen shuts himself away and Qiren can only hope that time will help Xichen heal, because Wangji's gone as soon as he possibly can to chase the man he almost died for once already, and he's older and tired but he might as well be young again and holding A-Huan for a walk around the courtyard until he stops crying for all that everything else has changed.

Does anyone else have those things that their parents were weird assholes about that they're actually glad for as adults? I'm not talking about the stuff that left you with disordered eating for life, this isn't a place for you to tell me your trauma, I mean those random annoying inconveniences that, in retrospect, you like the skills you developed from them. Here I'll give some of mine as an example:

Our video game and TV time and internet time were all limited.

We were fortunate enough to be in a house surrounded by nature, with a lot of non-digital toys and books because this was the 90s. This meant we spent most of our time reading, playing outside, and just general developing physical and mental skills that weren't "look at screen." This wasn't as much of an issue for my generation, but seeing how deterimental constant forced screen time (even in SCHOOLS) is to modern children, I find myself grateful for it.

Whenever I wanted to know the definition of a word, mom would hand me a children's dictionary.

This one is still so annoying. Even thinking about it, I get annoyed. But what it meant was that I learned how to use a dictionary (important), and I also learned that when I want to know something, I should go to the source and research it myself instead of just asking the nearest authority figure. I don't actually think that was her reason for doing that, but that's what it did, and it is a VERY good personality trait I'm glad I have. Also she would spell the word for me at least so that was nice LOL.

My dad was a huge asshole about enunciation.

Because my dad is an immigrant, I think, he was always a huge stickler for careful and proper enunciation. He would deadass stop me in the middle of sentences and be like "e-nun-ci-ate" and make me repeat it but carefully and with each syllable clearly audible. This is one of the reasons why, if you hear me speak, I sound like a gay (that part's me) Californian (that part's learning English from sesame street) newscaster (THAT part's dad). Whenever I see one of those guides for English language learners (ELLs) about American pronunciation where every syllable is hopelessly slurred into the next, and I realize I don't talk like that, or every time I can make myself easily understood over phone or drive thru speaker or to a robot, I am, in retrospect, extremely grateful he was such an asshole about it. I am a very clear speaker who is easily understood, especially by ELLs, and that is a priceless skill. Thanks for being a dick, dad!

Anyways, that aside, I didn't talk much with my friend on angst and more of what his preference is based in who he is shipped with

And I had realised a pattern between the guys he's shipped with and the very few girls he's shipped with

So here is what i found, in great summary so I don't go on a 5 page rant on this

Basically, his type in partner is someone who strong willed, determined and knows how to stand up themselves

Another detail would be that he likes people who seem to break his pattern, okay most popular ship, Gloves

The guy was very different from whoever else he fought, he fucking insulted the guy and he still managed to come out with a smile and more determination than ever, he lost, but to him, he had won and you cannot tell me that didn't peeked Emperor's interest

Another ship, Specs. He's a more strict guy, stickler to rules and all that, but he's determined still and he is willing to listen to his teammate’s and try something knew, even at the risk of their winning spot because he trusts his teammate’s, his friends and again, you cannot tell me Emperor doesn't admire that part of him, hell, I believe he even uses Specs as an example to be a better leader 😭😭😭 (the dork)

Then there's Goggles, tho I don't ship them, it is still sorta of a popular ship nonetheless, and I can see why! He's a bit of both when it comes to Specs and Gloves, he's determined to do better, nothing can really strike him down in terms of motivation and he'd trusts his teammates in a heart beat! Tho something unique to him is that he's so ready to do the impossible, so ready to try new things just for the sake of fun, losing has no meaning if by heart you have won

These three made him face the fact that maybe he had more to learn in being a leader (tho, the real kicker was his brother, the final straw I could say), I doesn't even have to be shipped! But these people have definitely peeked his interest and surely made him reflect

At first, he probably would feel guilty, very guilty, terribly guilty with how he had treated his teammates, especially his little brother. Seeing how well Specs got along with his teammates for example, even when they lost they just kept going, Specs never put pressure in his teammates (tho he did so to himself but that's already another angst train) and let them have fun

He probably grew up only knowing success, it was his ego that kept him afloat, but what happens when someone shatters that? From what I remember, Emperor took the loss better than i thought he would have? Hell, I feel like a part of him was even relieved, weather he noticed that or not, and when he realised it I'd imagine him going "why do I feel so relieved?" [Insert identity crisis]

Having to reconstruct your whole beliefs from the ground up after it got dismantled has to be one of the hardest things (trust me, I know it from experience) and you almost don't want to, you rather have the shattered pieces then get a new one

But, seeing how his actions affected his teammates friends, and his brother? Gosh, that must have been gut wrenching, they probably had a long talk, and if tears were shed? No one said anything, soft apologies whispered in the dead of night for only those close to hear

Now, that also begs the question of how he grew up, I know it's easy to make his parents abusive, but I like a little bit more...nuance to it? Or a different kind of abuse, its easy to jump on the verbal abuse train, but I think neglect can be easily used here too, I'd like to think his parents were absent, maybe a video call here or there. He knows they love him, they are just very busy people! And he has to be the one to continue their legacy, maybe if he took some of the work they'd be less busy, right? If he took care if Prince they'd have one less thing to worry about, if he took on the public apperance of their name they'd have one less thing to worry about

He won his first turf war

And they're proud, they're so so proud, they praised him and even did a celebration for it! So he did it again, and again, and they celebrated it less often because why celebrate something that has become the norm?

They visited less often as he got older, he's an adult now, he should be able to care for himself now, and he does, without fail

Until he doesn't

And what would they think of him? He wouldn't know, they don't call him anymore

And when they did, they said nothing about it, just "do better next time" and that was it

They never told him to do any of that, they never pressured him to do anything, they never yelled, punished or hurt him, for the first few years of his life they were very caring and even when they called they never blamed him, they were nice to him and would ask about his life and how things were doing, they never did not care, infact, he was free to do as he pleases as long as it didn't tarnish their name, it's him who decided to do all of that, and for what? For praises of people who he barely even knew besides a familial title? Psh, that's so stupid

And he's stupid for falling for that

I think Cal and Sandra were probably homeschooled at the North Pole. Carol most likely taught them. I know sometimes people that are homeschooled are taught by their parents. It was probably Carol’s job at the North Pole teaching her children while Scott does his Santa duties. In order to become a Principal most schools required you to have some teaching background. Carol most likely has some teaching background before she became a Principal and could easily teach her children. 1/2

I figured as much, too! That Carol home schooled them, in the series. 3. What’s the best thing about the show/series/books/comics/etc.?

silly answer: louis stirling edmonds  

serious answer: it really has two separate answers, one for form and one for content, because a big part of the appeal for me is seeing the guts of the production and I don’t know that I’d be that into it if it was expensively produced and bogged down with 2020’s cgi. it was messy and rushed and taped basically live every weekday in a New York studio for 5 years, and there are lots of bleeds around the edges because of that: flubbed lines, actors walking on set with their scripts, off stage noises, flies on faces, etc. but in the same way that mistakes and unscripted moments in live theatre add a little bit of extra magic, so too with the 60’s soap opera. the effects (practical, and digital) such as they are are cheesy and silly and psychedelic, and so of their time in a charming way, it's like seeing y.ale g.racey's pirate flames, or dancing ghosts, in a television show rather than a theme park ride.

in terms of the narrative itself, UMMM is it really way too predictable if i say Women. but genuinely, this show is the only show other than avowed cultural masterpiece b.lack s.ails with quite the array of interesting, compelling female characters ( compelling characters period, really ) that are so vastly different from each other, that you care about even when they are doing horrors –– especially when ! it runs the gamut from gothic heroine, america's sweetheart, elegant milf, mad arsonist divorcee, homicidal witch sometimes-vampire, bride of frankenstein (reincarnated from 18th century lady serial killer), pastor's daughter possessed with the spirit of a British showgirl ... i could go on. there are occasionally moments where they lean fully into Marriage and Romance, but most of the time this feels wrong and bad (vicki and jeff), or its purposefully subverted into some supernatural shadow version of the nuclear family ( with the exclusion of maggie and joe, who you can consider brad and janet ). it's never silly or self-reflective or Girl Power about it, women are just a part of the fabric of its world, its power structures, and the narrative in a way you usually don't even think about. liz stoddard runs everything and her word is truth. our narrator is a girl writing letters to herself. that's just the way it is.

4. What’s the worst thing about the show/series/books/comics/etc.?

silly answer: roger davis

serious answer: unfortunately. the portrayal of race is Bad ––  namely the brownface and really repulsive depiction of the romani people that went on for much longer than I expected in the 1897 sequence. white women with names like chavez or suki are otherwise as diverse as it gets. generally, they just stay in their lane writing about horrible rich white people but when they try to include any other ethnic group oh boy has it gone wrong.

10. Would you say that your portrayal is canon divergent or not? 

yea :) i like to have a friendly little repartee with canon in that i think it's delightful to put the Puzzle together and fit together bits of information in fun ways, and to be an absolute stickler for historical accuracy when it comes to certain things ( see: that day wendy and I spent researching roger's collection of cars ). but with this show I couldn't be 100% canon-compliant even if I wanted to be, with its many retcons and contradictions. ( and I don't really want to be )

the biggest thing in terms of my canon-divergence is liz's affairs with betty and ned, and vicki's parents: in no world is the canon version of the story that liz was having a lesbian affair with vick's mom lol ( liz being vicki's mother is the closest thing to a canon answer that story has ). but it's also not an interpretation i purely made up for giggles, it's grounded in scene / character / thematic analysis, reflected in the broader cultural moment and what was going on when liz was becoming a mother and mistress of the house. on top of being fun and interesting for my brain. ned calder being a he/him lesbian however, has nothing to explicitly disprove it, and I will continue to think on that particular headcanon as It May as Well Be True.

11. Are there some things you dislike about how the show/series/etc. portray the character you have picked up? If so, what?

oh yes. chiefly vicki and i'm metaphorically throttling mr curtis by the throat ( for various reasons, but mostly vicki ). the difference between her character at her introduction, to when alexandra left the show, is really startling: they watered her down immensely into someone far more passive, and frankly dumb most of the time, who –– and this is the thing that fuels my spite –– cares more about her irritating, aggressive boyfriend than her found family whom she cherishes. #notmyvicki. she catches a lot of flack for stupidity from the fandom ( and from alexandra herself ) and certainly she's written that way at the very end to make her r.oger davis' perfect submissive woman ( ick ). but Platonic Ideal Vicki is not that way. struggling through strange and unfamiliar situations, yes, barred from secrets, yes, human in a world among supernatural deviations beyond her understanding, even missing regular ol social cues (#autism) but she got brains. she's a tutor ! to freakin david collins, who is smart enough to take apart car engines, dissect tide charts, and have his own darkroom at twelve. good god !

generally i get frustrated with josette wherever she's written as obsessed with count von count as he is her, when they attempt to treat it like a pure romance ( it is not ). I find her a lot more interesting in the myths and stories they tell about her before she's portrayed in 1795, or her brief ghost cameos, because they preserve her ambiguity and the ambiguity of the relationship between her and barn and her and her husband. also the fact that she um. just isn't there ? when the collins family are being tormented by malevolent ghosts of great uncles. she should be hitting quentin with a ghost rock or something. mostly i think josette would care more about protecting the girls barnacle kidnaps to brainwash into becoming her, and not that dusty crusty man.

roger and liz tend to be pretty good ( liz is often in a coma or fake dead too much for my liking but like. that's so joan can go on vacay so i support it ) and joan & louis are good enough actors to course correct shitty writing. if there's ever issues with roger it's that certain writers will occasionally forget about the Character Development and the bond he has with his sister, and those he has formed with David, and Vick. in particular 646 is my worst enemy: after vicki has almost jumped off the cliff and is paralyzed in her room with grief and he sort of brushes it off with "well whatever she needs to just do her job it's very inconvenient" and says they can do nothing for her except wait and see. it makes me want to chew glass and not in a "I think they should fuck" way. man cares her. she's a member of their family to them which he says himself. he's helped rescue her multiple times from life-threatening situations. HE WAS GOING TO GIVE HER AWAY AT HER WEDDING. if there's any defense it's that vicki herself is hardly the same character at this point, but sometimes they just make him Drink Brandy Care About No One which is like. only half true ( the drinking brandy part )

apparently canon toya has brothers. i didn't realize this until i was halfway through designing the Thunderclan family tree. oops! they're dead now lol

fading kittens are an actual phenomenon in the real world; sometimes kittens just. die with no apparent cause. sorta like SIDS.

in clan culture, fading kits are seen as Starclan messengers; they bring the litter down and then head back up once they're delivered. Bluepaw's parents, being sticklers for tradition, saw this as a sign.

after all, a kit with two Starclan guides must be destined for greatness, no?

of course, Graycall took this inch and ran a mile. even before Bluekit was an apprentice, he'd often take him out of the nursery for training sessions. unfortunately, no one told Graycall that babies Cannot Handle daily training sessions that lasted upwards of an entire afternoon.

as great of a deputy as Pricklesky is...she's a bit lacking in the empathy department. at some point, she convinced herself that Graycall was doing this for the good of their child.

so whenever the young kit wept over bleeding paw pads, tiny chest heaving with exhaustion, Pricklesky would hold him close, whispering and cooing into his ears.

"It's okay, Bluebell. This is for the best, you'll see."

that's what they both convinced themselves, no matter how much their hearts ached.

fast forward a few moons, and Bluepaw's apprenticed to his father, upon Graycall's request. This Does Not End Well!

eventually, Bluepaw runs into someone on the Skyclan border. an orange tabby, just across the river, half-tail swishing on occasion.

he introduces himself as Sunpaw.

and everything spirals from there.

at the time the story starts, Bluepaw's somewhere between "if i don't follow Every Single Rule set by my clan and father i Will Die" and "oh this isn't normal actually. huh". it fluctuates from book to book.

surprisingly, he has a decent relationship with his mom! they're both just Really Bad At Emotions! (graycall's tomfuckery isn't helping matters either lmao)

he is in fact autistic! he can't be around loud things for too long lest he Explode and Die (start scratching the ground and covering his ears) (or scratching his ears) (or scratching anything in the vicinity)

because of this, he struggles to express his feelings explicitly, especially with putting a name to them. like Wow, my chest feels really tight for some reason, I Wonder Why (he is about to have a meltdown)

but like, if you know him well enough...he's surprisingly easy to read.

his ears are arguably the most expressive part of him. they'll droop slightly if you say something that bothers him, they'll twitch if he hears something strange, they'll perk up if he sees someone he likes, etc etc

him and Finchpaw (emu) are also pretty close, surprisingly. traumatic circumstances bringing people together n all that.

you can’t type idols because a lot of them are giving personas by their companies. you say rm is “careful with his words as to not offend others” but as an INFJ and someone who’s been a fan of bts for years i can say this is the farthest thing from the truth and that he’s generally out of touch and tone deaf when it comes to other people’s feelings. bts also took an MBTI quiz during one of the most recent run bts episodes (not 16 personalities, but the official mbti test using functions). rm got ENFP in that episode which is basically what he is. even if you wanted to categorize him as an INXJ type which he’s not, he’s definitely not introverted in any way neither does he exhibit any J tendencies. the closest INFJ in bts is probably hobi, because aside from the whole “sunshine” persona if you listen to what others who have worked with bts have said about him, what other members say about him, and what he’s said about himself (especially in those Disney+ promo interview he did) then you’ll know. he himself said he’s quiet when he’s by himself and he says his parents worry about that too, plus in group settings he always listens while everyone else talks, he’s considers himself a sponge and soaks in other people adapting to their thoughts and feels, he’s a stickler for details and organization, and a complete perfectionist. hobi also isn’t the stereotypical ESFJ that a lot of people would have you believe. so if you’re going to type people then do a better job than surface level observations.

Yes I'm well aware most idols have a persona and I try my best to look past their set image by looking at interviews, watching the shows they're on, their personal content, reading about other's perspectives on them etc. So no I do not only have surface level observations, I actually do try to dig deeper into them. I only have short descriptions for my post (I'm sure you're referring to my recent post of the list I made) as I didn't want to make the post too long. And yes I did watch that ep where they took the MBTI test... I'm pretty sure it was still 16personalities or something similar to it bc I did not see them discuss cognitive functions in the videos. The test typed Jungkook as an INTP and Suga as an ISTP. Do you really think Jungkook is an Ne user and Suga is a Ti dom with aux Se? I don't see Ne usage with Jungkook, the same with Ti and Suga. Suga uses Se, but he is not comfortable with it enough to have it as his aux; he's always had much better use of Ni and Te, hence INTJ.

Hobi is not an INFJ and your explanation for him being the closest to it is vague and can apply to any type honestly. ESFJs can be quiet and observant...It's very Fe to watch the reactions and emotions of others and the environment. Adapting to their feelings and thoughts is very Fe. That is why I think he is a dom Fe user. I also don't see him use Ni...his perfectionism stems from Si, along with his need for organization and structure. It's also why he's very detail oriented. Ni does not bother with the details or at the least is not as attentive as Si. Intuitive perceiving functions are generally more focused on the big picture. Hobi is pretty good with his tertiary Ne, it's prominent in his creative process compared to Ni doms Suga and RM (yes I'm still going with INFJ. I know there's a huge debate between ENFP and INFJ with him though).

Also I'm not an expert in MBTI, it's just something I've always been really interested in. I happen to like kpop as well and noticed the misconception of MBTI within it and decided to make this blog. It's mainly more for my entertainment and to learn more. I know I will not be accurate 100% and state that in my posts that they're subject to change, but I know for sure I am likely more correct than 16personalities lol.
