Hantengu: As Bad As You Can Get Without Being Muzan

I've touched on this in old meta entries and I'm just going to wind up linking them here, but a friend got me going on this again today, so I'll state it again: Hantengu is one of the most insidious characters in this whole series, if you're going by sweeping themes of self-mastery which Gotouge may or may not have consciously intended.

For starters, I'm going to compare Hantengu to his polar opposite, Rengoku Kyojuro, mostly by referring you this post where I already explained how Kyojuro displays samurai-style idealized virtues of self-mastery, stoicism, and inner peace about death or aging. A common theme in oni lore is how letting one's passions run amok is what brings out the demon any person has potential to become, whether these passions are greed or worry or even joy. Kyojuro is very clearly a passionate person, but he's self-aware enough to know that his passions must be kept in check in order to benefit from them, and that means putting effort into maintaining them. He's seen how that can lead to burn out as in the case of his father, so he maintains his own balance by recognizing and accepting the harsh truths of any situation with as much grace as he can muster, recognizing and taking steps to overcome his own shortcomings, and recognizing and making a choice to "set his heart ablaze" instead of getting lost in frenzy.

Hantengu, on the other hand, lets his passions run so amok that they take their own physical forms, and even then no single one of them is ever consistently powerful enough to be sustained for long before he's spawned something new based on whatever new frenzy he's in. It's his reckless abandon of self-control that made him so demonically powerful.

There are other characters who lack self-control, though--Inosuke and Zenitsu are who they are because they are the perfect agents to introduce chaos to any scene. They gradually take steps to learn self-mastery, however--Zenitsu is hyperaware of his own failings, to the point of rumination, and Inosuke is hypoaware. However, at their core, their desire to do better by other people leads them down paths of self-improvement, a path which keeps them aligned with humanity as opposed to the allure of powerful demons.

Demons in this series display similarly admirable traits, though--Kokushibo and Akaza have striven as hard as any Corp member to improve themselves, for instance. Gyutaro and Daki might have had blatant disregard for others due to a lingering jealousy and hatred for how much better everyone else always had things than they did, but they have always taken active roles in standing up for themselves and trying to improve their circumstances.

If we dive into more loathsome, demented demons, we still see that they know themselves enough to own their faults, whether they see them as faults are not. Douma is quick to recognize his own lack of passion, Enma is unashamed as about what gives him pleasure and uses his underhanded, self-protecting tactics in order to play the long game in his strategy, Gyokko is an artist, and Muzan is perfectly clear and at peace with who he is and what he wants. Muzan's desires are so plain to him that it even opened up a believable opportunity for Tanjiro to feel sympathy for him in their final encounter, though Tanjiro made the choice not to.

Tanjiro never even entertained the notion of pitying Hantengu, though.

I'll come back to Tanjiro, but to borrow from this post about themes in KnY as they relate to oni lore: In many philosophies, even an excess of positive emotions can be detrimental, and people who follow those philosophies are instead encouraged to not given into any emotion too strongly. Likewise, the lack of a virtue can be bad, but an excess of it becomes a vice.

While the Ki-Do-Ai-Raku fearsome foursome represent the danger of unchecked, excessive emotions, Zouhakuten represents an excess of virtue, which turns it into a vice. From an outside perspective, of course Tanjiro was doing the right thing attacking a tiny oni, because this oni will go on killing people if he doesn't, but Zouhakuten focuses so intensely on the injustice of attacking the small and weak that he is ignorantly convinced of his own self-righteousness.

The other demons don't do this, particularly--they justify what they do, like Daki saying how this is just the way the world works that beautiful and powerful oni can do whatever they want because that is how the world works, but she doesn't claim her actions are righteous. Muzan also makes rational points--which Zouhakuten echos--about how the demon slayers drive a lot of the violence due to their own inability to make peace with their lot in life, and going out of their way to attack demons. However, as much as Muzan believes he is superior, he doesn't belief he is a god who can cast moral judgement on others, nor is he interested.

Zouhakuten, taking the form of a deity that fiercely protects the precepts of Buddhism and threatens those who defy it, makes the daring claim that he is just.

The Demon Slayers Corp members, at least those like Tanjiro, are guilty of the same thing. The difference, however, comes back to self-awareness. For example, Tanjiro is confronted with the question of whether Zouhakuten/Hantengu has ever eaten anyone in Tanjiro's life, and as he has not, Tanjiro must at least question if justice is on his side anyway in attacking Zouhakuten. It was an easy answer, but being mortal and easily killed for sticking his neck out by picking fights with demons, it's something Tanjiro continually has to question and reaffirm.

Yes, the answer is always easy for Tanjiro, and yes, there are Corp members who are only in it for the glory or the money (and these characters are not treated as heroes). However, Tanjiro must also continually self-reflect on his own weaknesses and failings. Taisho Secrets tell us he's even reviewing his training and battles in his sleep to analyze and learn from them, and we see his continual efforts to improve no matter how beaten down he's gotten. In the heat of battle he has to keep himself confident and focused. He's got to keep from beating himself up unfairly, and he's got to keep from getting over-confident, it's a balance to maintain and it takes practice to read oneself with clarity.

He's constantly having to practice self-mastery, which means Total Concentration of whatever strength he needs to pull from, including passions like righteous anger that make it feel like his heart and/or forehead are ablaze. It takes him practice to be able to keep rebounding, but he's got humility to be able to learn from others, take criticism, and analyze himself with clarity.

These are the virtues which Kimetsu no Yaiba extols, and which most separates the paths of righteous from the paths of those who who gave into their passions.

As a few other examples: --Nezuko retains her virtues by recognizing her own weakness and focusing on self-mastery --Rui lost himself in a feeling of entitlement, conviction in his own sense of justice, and disappointment in his parents. Or so he thought! That was all the result of running away from a truth about himself he didn't want to face; the fact that he was the one responsible for breaking his family bonds. --The Pillars, with all their human faults, remain righteous because they could easily succumb to their own sorrows, angers, and self-loathing. The fact that they do not--however much these things have messed them up--and they keep striving to better themselves, for the sake of a conviction in something difficult to achieve otherwise.

Zouhakuten, instead of rising above his own shortcomings, is a deeper concentration of, a wallowing in those unbridled passions. Being so convinced of his own righteousness, he does not have any clear self-understanding, and therefore, has no inclination toward self-mastery.

He is, after all, Hantengu.

Hantengu made himself into what he is because he convinced himself of his own lies about his own helplessness, and this utter lack of self-awareness and his unchecked passions are what make him a demon. By doing nothing to improve himself, he grew out of control. And, ultimately, Hantengu is selfish. Everything must revolve around him and how he is the most wretched creature, the most powerless thing to ever have the harshness of the world thrust upon it. Among a cast of relatable demons, made victims of their own poor luck or circumstance or a desire to amend some wrong done to them, Hantengu is the worst because he got himself there for nothing but his own self-centered lie.

While all the demons have relatable traits which have flown out of control, he's the most realistically like someone we all know or have met. He's the most benign and hardest to catch, one whom many philosophical, religious, or therapeutic texts try to warn against for how his insidious fleeing from truth grows into something monstrous.

The scariest part is that the wallowing Hantengu might be closer than we think.

Life always managed to piss you off. You used to express it too, though not anymore really. You truly did enjoy your stay at Vagastrom, however, you had your reasons as to why you transferred to Mortkranken. Despite the captain hoping you would open up, you wouldn't budge. This was something you would rather keep to yourself. Well, if only that stupid Masterpiece News, whoever it was, decided to leak about your sister dying from the Clash. Despite wanting to murder whoever did it, you figured that would be for another time. For now, you were more focused on finding a way to kill the bastard that killed your sister in the first place.

Before you knew it, class had ended. Admittedly, despite being in the same year as both Yuri and Jiro, you didn't always share the same classes with them. Well, it's not like you could do much about that. You did have different goals from them after all. Granted, while you had the same effort and energy for yours just like Yuri's, you considered it more noble than yours. And for the most part, he didn't seem to care much about it.

While you were preoccupied with changing, Jiro wasn't the type to really peak. And yet, he was curious as to your body. Well, he supposed that thought would occur since he was the one that woke you up from the curse. Slowly, he glanced, admiring your body. It was rather smooth compared to his, though to be fair, you seemed like the type to take care of yourself. And yet, you seemed a bit more frail than when he first met you. Your personality truly did have changed from the past two years the more that he thought of it.

Noticing you were almost done changing, he looked away, curious as to why out of all houses to transfer to, why Mortkranken? "Alright, let's get this over with," you said, as you watched him take out a few tools. He took out a stethoscope, checking your heart rate. "Heart rate, 80 bpm," he noted, before grabbing a pressure gauge. He placed it inside your arm, checking it. "Blood pressure, 89/59," he said to himself, noting that as well. Before you knew it, he did a few things, before finishing, as he placed the tools away.

"Have you been consuming Foxglove?" For once since being in Mortkranken, a shocked gaze appeared in your eyes, gazing in his red eyes. You were confused at first before it finally connected. "Is this why you wanted to do a health check on me?" You asked, dropping your smile. You had to admit, you hadn't expected for Jiro to figure it out. Though then again, his knowledge was in some ways greater than yours; which didn't surprise you as much. "So you did," he stared at you, before frowning. "There isn't any reason for you to. Seems like at least you took small pieces, but it's affecting your health," he said, as the corner of your lips turned down.

"That's none of your fucking business," you said, before hearing Jiro beginning to laugh. The fact that he laughed was both confusing, infuriating, and yet beautiful, actually, you were going to stop yourself from there. "I missed that bluntness," Jiro said, managing to calm himself, as he smiled at you. Before you knew it, you could feel your face turn red, scoffing. "Shut up! You're being awfully weird now," you turned your face away from him. You didn't like how you could feel your heart beating fast, as you could feel cold hands on your face, before gently looking back now at Jiro.

While you wouldn't admit it, if you were asked who out of all the students at Darkwick was pretty, Jiro would honestly be the only one you would think of. "Y/n, I may not know why you're deciding to poison yourself. But, whatever problems you're facing, please, don't. In fact, lay all your love on me," he said, as you could feel his face closer to yours. ". . . May I kiss you?" He asked, before being toppled down on the ground, as you kissed him. You let go for a moment, looking at him. "I'll be Frankenstein's girlfriend," you said before the two of you kissed. Unfortunately, neither of you heard Yuri's steps. "The two of you! Go kiss somewhere else!" He screamed, a bit horrified, as the two of you stopped to look at him, before laughing, leaving the captain more frustrated, as the two of you eventually went to your room. Unfortunately, both of you had to go back for Jiro's medication.

Well, with the beginning we already know who was the first one he decided to go with, and if not, it was with Zenitsu.

Although he didn't really want to talk to him, he wanted to talk to Nezuko since she was more his age and he had already talked to her a little after she recovered, plus she was Tanjiro's sister and Muichiro adored Tanjiro.

'This thing about making friends is difficult, why isn't everyone like Tanjiro? I think Shinobu-San was wrong, I don't find their adventures funny. First of all, how does Tanjiro put up with them? That blonde boy acts like a baby and is very loud, poor ears...', oh well, there are still more options little fog! Keep trying!

He was finally able to talk to Nezuko, although she only referred to Muichiro as "Inosuke", he didn't care, he believed it was because that was the name Nezuko heard the most.

I WON'T EVEN SAY IT, anyway, Inosuke crooked his fingers and applied what Tanjiro had taught him, he didn't use as much force this time and not only used one finger, but several to start raising and lowering them like spiders from his hips to his armpits, but he stayed there because, out of defense, Muichiro stuck his arms to his ribs and hugged himself, trapping Inosuke's fingers.

Inosuke frowned and dug harder than before, laughing when Muichiro arched his back and started laughing in earnest.

Worst? Nezuko was laughing with him and kept repeating "cute!", making Muichiro cover his blushing face as he rolled over. 'Stohohohop!! I'm too fluhuhusterehehed for thihihis!!'

'Mwahahaha! I have beaten you! Admit it! The great king of the mountain has once again won!'

'Yohohou ha-havehehehen't won! I-it wahahahas just luhuhuhuck!'

Inosuke gasped, how dare he?! But how could I make him admit defeat?!

Well, his only option was to continue until he admitted it, he couldn't think of any other way.

'Come on! Accept defeat! Isn't that a lot for you?!' 'It fehehehels gohohohod! I-It dohohehesn't bother me thahahahat ahahahaha muhuhuhuch!'

'Damn! That doesn't make sense! I guess I'll let you this time... But next time I'll ask Kentaro for help to make you beg for mercy before my greatness!', and he finally stopped.

Muichiro wasn't really upset and sat down when Inosuke got off of him and sat on the side crossing his arms.

It seemed like Shinobu was right about something, you never got bored with them.

Lawbin Wano Analysis Part 1 - Because it's you

Finally, we reached to Wano *clapping*. I have been reading a lot of lawbin fanfics that I think I have a lot of bias in these scenes now so please don't expect I'll be rational in this analysis.

Chapter 927 - 955: Who told you?

I might read too deep into this, but I think Law and Robin somehow kept communication through out the Wano arc. When Kyoshiro's henchmen ruined Sanji's soba stall and the straw hats fought back, only Robin, Sanji, Usopp and Franky knew about it. Franky was busy looking for Onigashima's map and Sanji probably won't be the one who told Law. That left Usopp and Robin, and Robin is the one who's aware the fact that Kyoshiro family probably is dangerous to mess with.

So when Law found Sanji and tell him to hide, I'm like how did he know? o_o Of course, it might be Usopp or others told Kin'emon and he told Law or the news spread to the whole Wano (the timing is quite short), Law found it dangerous so he came to find Sanji, there are countless other possibilities. But I just felt like in this situation, Robin is the one who knew Kyoshiro is dangerous, she being the one who told Law is making the most sense.

so my non-rational logic is: Law knew Hawkins is here -> tell Robin to be careful -> Robin told him about Sanji and Franky fought with Kyoshiro -> they figured out it might attract Hawkins (he knew straw hats identity) -> Law went to find Sanji and Franky

But at the end, it might just be plot convenience that I read too deep into it haha.

When sanji said "We can't have that!! It'll put Nami and Robin in danger!!", I'm like Law is it that's why you went to save them hehe

I have been saying a multiple time haha, but I'm not tired to say it again. Robin is the one who assumed Road Poneglyph in Onigashima, but Law is the one who went to search for it?! Oda please show us exactly how many times Law and Robin communicate in Wano?!

Urgh they will look so good in kimono together!! Oda really robbed us!! and he also didn't let us see Law in the Beast Pirates outfit q-q

personally my least favorite female character in Wano is definitely Shinobu...and I don't think I need to explain it at all lol that woman need to apologize to Law.

When Kin'emon said he didn't heard back from Law, I actually have this headcanon that Robin knew where he is all along. Again there are lots of ways that how did Law's crew (also Kidd's crew) know the new location of meet up (only Wano people knew and it updated after Law get caught by Hawkins), but in my headcanon, Robin told him. I don't have anything to prove it, just my imagination haha

Law is just so kind, even though Shinobu doubted him, he still let the samurais plan on his ship, still offer to help them land on the island and still offer to plan their raid. He doesn't let anyone talk bad about his crew and he rather sacrificed himself than seeing them get tortured. He's just so kind and that's why he's my favorite T-T but i really wish he won't have to sacrifice himself anymore :(

Chapter 996: Because it's you

Omg this scene, I don't know how long I will yap about this, but this scene is so important! There are only few panels of lawbin but you can learned a lot from just by these panels!

First of all, I saw some people misunderstand this scene happened in Zou, (I thought this happen in Zou before too) but I realize this actually happens in Wano. The building behind is the same ruins as Oden's castle, (can check chapter 919), so from Zou to Wano, Law and Robin must develop some kind of relationship or friendship that Law trust her enough to say his full name (including the hidden name).

Some people might say Law told Baby 5 and Buffalo too, yes but he only told Robin VOLUNTARILY. If he only want to get information about D, he can ONLY tell her that he's D. Like what he did to Sengoku and Doflamingo.

To know the actual meaning of his hidden name, I actually did some research with the japanese text. So in japanese

Law said "おれの本当の名は-" (my true name is-)

Robin asked "隠し名なの？", (Is it your hidden name? (or ailas))

And in chapter 763, we learnt D. is hidden name 隠し名 and Water is imina 忌み名, I don't know a proper translation for imina, so I will just write as it is. Law said: 「D」は隠し名「ワーラル」は忌み名で．．．ウチの家族は代々．．． 隠し名 Hidden name A name given to others to prevent people from knowing their real name. I actually used google translate lol but I read multiple websites about it, and they have given similar explanation. so I assumed "Trafalgar Law" is the name he used to cover his real name which is "Trafalgar D. Water Law".

Imina have three meanings, since Law didn't fit the first two explanation, so it falls to the third one. He also said the imina is passed through generations in his family. That's why a lot of people assumed that Law might be a descendant of nobles in the ancient kingdom. What I'm trying to say is Law really trust Robin a lot to be able to reveal his full name to her. The D itself is already dangerous enough, of course there are two "D"s worked in the marine but Garp is powerful himself (he doesn't listen to WG anyways) and Saul is a giant himself too. If WG have a chance, they will probably get rid the D clan as much as possible.

And on top of that, Law might be a descendant of a noble from the D clan and there must be a critical reason why his family want to hide this name all along, so if the WG knew about it, it might be more dangerous for him. So I think Law only tell his true name to people that he fully trusted with.

In "Natsume's Book of Friends", if you know the monster's true name you can control it. And in "Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle", sakura and syaoran they fall in love and saved each other, and only at the end, they exchanged their real name. Telling your true name is really important in japnese culture, it's almost means you're giving yourself to the person (But only depends on the context, sometimes it's implied)

It proves that revealing your true name is an important thing. So I think a lot of people really ignored the fact that Law really must trust Robin a lot to tell her his full name.

I have also seen someone said that Law and Robin are talking very casually here (Japanese have honorific and different ways to talk with others) like even some couple won't talk causally like that. I don't really know japanese so I actually did try to do some research on it but I really can't figure it out lol

When Law said "You're the only one I would tell this" also can translate as "I told you because it's you" omg >< Law isn't an expressive person so if he said something like that, he really do like Robin a lot in my opinion. Again, if he only want to know if Robin knows anything about D, he can just ask directly. He doesn't need to tell her his true name as well as saying something ambiguous like this :p

And don't you guys think they don't need to explain a lot during their conversation? Like Law only told Robin his true name and she can tell what's his intention. And she also tell him she's interested in the same thing! I actually think Robin must be really happy that someone can go find the poneglyph with her and share her findings. Learning void century and the will of D is always prohibited, so it must be really rare for Robin to find someone that she can tell him “I'm interesting with the same thing!” That's one of the reasons why I like lawbin so much.

And the rest of the conversation, to me, it's almost imply that they can do this together and discussing how to achieve it.

Not to also mention that Robin is surrounded by D clan in her life, Luffy is her captain, Saul is her savior, Dragon is her leader during time skip (+ he's Luffy's dad) and Law is her alliance. I think Law might become more important to her in the future hehe :D

Chapter 1031: learning history

I'm actually surprise Law will use the word "history" here, because if we read it more directly in chapter 996, he just want to learn "the meaning of D" and his checkered fate. (history is rather implied) Although the will of D is also part of the history, I would say learning his fate and a meaning is really more like a present thing? Oda can just use "learn about my fate" would be a more direction expression, so is he hinting something here? Or Law have been talking to Robin so much that he want to learn the history too? haha

But again, I think I might just read too deep into this. I'm happy Law want to learn history too! So he can learn with Robin together hehe :p

Something I love about Demon Slayer fights is that they all have some sort of theme to them. The major ones especially. Like- they're not there just to flaunt the characters strength, they have such depth and symbolism to them.

It's actually one of the things I see people complimenting the most in kny- the symbolism. And, same, its honestly my fav part of the show, along with the characters.

Now let's look at the major fights in infinity castle:

-Douma vs Shinobu, Kanao, Inosuke

-Kokushibou vs Muichirou, Genya, Sanemi, Gyomei

-Akaza vs Tanjiro, Giyuu

-Muzan vs #everyone

When we look at these fights, we see that in every one of them there's some sort of connection between all the participants. Something that ties them together.

°•☆Douma vs Victory trio(I heard someone call them that and I really like it)☆•°

First we have Shinobu encountering Douma, once she is killed, Kanao enters the scene, and shortly after her, Inosuke.

There's something that they all have in common. What? Emotions.

All of these characters can be closely tied to the concept of emotion. Shinobu has suppressed all her inner rage for 4 years, and finally let's it out during the fight. She's furious. She's seething with rage. Kanao has been abused for her whole childhood before butterfly sisters came into the picture. She'd get hit if she cried, it was so bad that her brain registered crying as something that could get you killed, like how we know not to put our hands on a stove because it will get us burned. She CAN cry, but subconsciously suppresses it, in fear of punishment she logically knows won't happen anymore. She also closed of her heart entirely. She was never raised with love and care, thus not knowing how to express properly, finding it easier to just smile and not care. Inosuke was raised by boars in the mountains. Do you think someone like that knows how to perceive human emotion properly? He also gets surprised at small human gestures which don't really make sense to him. All of these characters can't properly express their emotions, but they ARE capable of it. They are human at heart. Emotion is a part of their soul. Then there's Douma, someone who hasn't been able to feel anything since he was a baby. That's the tragedy of his character. And only when faced with a true, emotionless person are the victory trio able to sort themselves out, and reflect on their own souls.

▪¤□¤▪Kokushibo vs Muichirou, Genya, Sanemi, Gyomei▪¤□¤▪

With these characters, what is it that's connecting them and tying them together? Family. All of these characters have at least one family member who they have a screwed relationship with. Gyomei and the kids, Muichirou and his twin, Sanemi and Genya.

But there's a difference here. All the slayers have something in common, they Love their family. Its not to be questioned. They want to protect them and wish the best for them even if their relationship is screwed. Kokushibo isn't like that. He doesn't love Yorichi. He doesn't wish the best for him. He definetly DID love him at some point, but that is lost to time. In their childhood interactions, we see Kokushibo pity him. Pity, not love, those two are pretty different. And then he's later consumed by a burning jealousy, which spirals into hatred.

Eventually, his own jealousy is the cause of his demise. And while many of the other participants of that fight die as well, we are shown people mourning them. Kokushibo dies alone, with no one but the brother he died resenting and wishing the worst upon to pity him in the afterlife.

》◇•°Akaza vs Tanjiro, Giyuu°•◇《

The theme in this fight? Weakness and strength.

Thorought the fight, we are shown the characters conserving on these themes. What does it mean to be weak? When are you considered strong?

Akaza hates the weak, simple as that. This could both be associated with the fact that he was too weak to save Koyuki and his teacher, or the fact that the neighbouring dojo members were weak, causing him to think of all weak people as cowards.

But then Tanjiro brings up a good point, that everyone was weak at some point. Akaza was a baby. Tanjiro was a baby. They were both equally weak. They needed someone to love and care for them. Someone strong. So that they could grow strong aswell and care for the weak. This creates a cycle. Akaza hating weakness is irrational because those he hates so fiercely could grow to become his strongest opponent. Then we have mental strength. Akaza is stronger than Giyuu and Tanjiro, yet he is weaker than them.

×○•♧Muzan vs #everyone♧•○×

This fight was honestly about the concept of humanity itself. What makes us human? Does immortality truly exist? Muzan is faced with everyone he has ever hurt. Hundreds of people. All holding nothing but resentment for him.

"You have stepped on a tigers tail multiple times, and that tiger has now awakened. And they are very angry"

-Kagaya Ubuyashiki to Muzan.

In this same conversation, Kagaya tells Muzan that immortality exists, but it is impossible for a human to become immortal. The only immortal thing are humans wishes and ideals, as they are passed down generation to generation. Muzan has lived for a thousand years. The goal to destroy Muzan has also lived for a thousand years. An immortality that killed Muzan.

Because even if human lives are fleeting, their spirits are everlasting. Because they make connections, because they hope. Because they leave traces of themselves behind.

Muzan is a being that should not be allowed to exist, stated by Tanjiro. Because Muzan is trying to go against nature. He is fighting a battle that he can't win. He hurts everyone around him for he is a coward too scared to face the undeniable truth.

"Ubuyashiki, you were right. All creatures die without exception. Only memories are eternal. You were right. I can't even remember a single person I murdered. When the body dies, everything is over. But the mind remains and it never perishes. Even I was defeated. I witnessed this fact, it moved me and I trembled."

• My take on inokana: They complement each other in many ways. Inosuke is very loud, and Kanao is very quiet, but they've both seen each other in the rare state where they're not. I feel like Inosuke could bring out a little immaturity in Kanao and that she could teach Inosuke a fraction of patience. Inosuke definitely has some form of appreciation for her skills and capabilities, and he'd definitely hold her in high regard in his own mountain king way. I don't know why, but a gut feeling tells me they'd agree on a lot of things for completely different reasons, and I suppose she'd humour him when he wants to go exploring in the forests because why not? Personal hc: they would've stayed by each other's side during recovery where Kanao would tell Inosuke more about Shinobu, and would also tell him the occult stories Shinobu always used to tell while Kanae covered her ears. Anyways yeah I care about them a lot. The bsd friend that suggested rengokunikida is a genius because it's so fitting. The immaculate coincidence of both of them getting impaled in the stomach by an immortal being WHILE SMILING AND LOOKING AT PEACE is too perfect.

I’m fond of Yoshikage, if I may be so informal, for his taste in fashion, he cares quite a bit about how he presents himself, and by extension cares how you do. He makes sure you dress appropriately for your age, and in a gender conforming way. He sighs every time you come home with pants on under your uniform’s skirt, or with your tie abandoned. God forbid you’re a part of a subculture that doesn’t conform- being a delinquent isn’t going to get you anywhere in life. Charms on your bag aren’t allowed until you’re older, and pushing your socks down like that makes you look ridiculous.

While Daddy is rather strict and loveless, Shinobu isn’t. She spoils you a little too much- especially considering she thinks she didn’t show Hayato the love he needed, and that’s why he acts Like That. She’s thankful he doesn’t bother you too much, but would it kill him to come downstairs and eat dinner with us? Oh, Mommy’s sorry, she doesn’t mean to vent, she loves girls nights with you too! Yoshikage has assimilated well into a fatherly role, he accepts it as “being a man,” and therefore, part of his role in being normal. The only issue is he’s used to his father, who has very old and traditional views on what a man does, with absolutely zero chance of becoming open minded. He's more fond of his mother, really. Neither of your parents tell you no if you ask for something- it’s a bit different if you’re masc or fem, he has an idea of what you’re supposed to be from very early on and failing to meet those expectations means not getting the care you deserve. At least from Yoshikage, Shinobu will always love you. ♡

If you’re a girl, Yoshikage is fine with you being a daddy’s girl, as he was sort of himself, in a sense (Don't mention his relationship with his actual father). He’ll humor you asking him to buy you things, as long as it isn’t every week or terribly expensive. You mustn't become a brat. He isn’t really one for excessive materialism, but nine times out of ten he’ll humor you if it means you’re opening up to him. He’ll rent books and different types of media from the library for you if you ask (That he approves of), and he takes you to the park for some fresh air weekly, even if you’re older. He encourages taking care of yourself, but you shouldn’t be trashy about it. Do your nails, but not bright colors. Style your hair, but not in a tacky way, and leave it natural or, if you MUST dye it, dye it a natural color. He tends to nag you more if you’re fem- no boyfriends, come home by a certain time, etc. Typical overprotective girldad. He uses a softer voice when he speaks with his daughter- he knows he’s supposed to be gentle with you, and he’s not going to risk giving you a complex where you grow up to be like the women he murders and doesn’t keep. 

If you’re a boy, he’s less expressive with you, and you likely get most of your affection from Shinobu. He’s fine emotionally neglecting you because he doesn’t view you as something soft. You must be like him. Your brother’s already a failure, are you going to follow in his footsteps? He would still take his son to the park and get him a library card (Note: Doesn’t rent books for you, only gets you the card) and whatnot, but it’s obvious he’s doing it out of obligation (Shinobu lightly suggested it) rather than real love. Bummer! You get nice clothes, though. Being quiet as a boy is fine as long as you aren’t struggling academically. Which has its advantages! If you’re failing, he’ll tutor you, and that means more attention! That also means getting locked in your room and getting berated because “Men are supposed to be better than this, who will have you when you’re older if you’re stupid?” but hey. At least you can get out of hanging out with him by saying you need to study, but you can’t get out of his life lesson lectures. 

While Hayato is the weird child, you’ve taken on the role of what Yoshikage intended his future children to be like, hopefully. Well behaved, well mannered, you don’t have any disturbing hobbies (Which is bold coming from him), you don’t get in his way. For that, he rewards you. Gifts, quality time, letting you be alone, etc. Anything he can think of that will reinforce this good behavior.  Hayato has mixed feelings about you. He also has a bit of a complex when it comes to gender considering his canon dynamic with his mother of “I”m gonna be the new man of the house and take care of mom,” so your relationship depends heavily on a few things. Who’s older, if you’re closer with Yoshikage or Shinobu, if you’re a girl or a boy (Hayato hasn’t figured out there’s a third option yet, give him a couple years), etc. If you’re a girl, you get pushed in the same box as Shinobu. This creep is pretending to be dad, I have to protect mom and my baby sister! If you’re a guy, he’ll expect you to help him, but cuts you some slack if you fail because you’re younger. Hayato likely dismisses an older sibling entirely, they’re just getting in the way and not helping mom at all, regardless of if they help her or not.

The bodyguards

Tanjirou starts feeling bad as soon as he meets one of the Pillars his family talks so much about. He knows he's here only because Tanjirou's family is important and wealthy and they're friends with Ubuyashiki.

The swordsman is really tall, in fact, Tanjirou has never seen someone that huge before. He smells like a strong person and Tanjirou knows he'll be wasting his time with him.

Just because Tanjirou wanted to see the world. He bites his bottom lip and starts considering staying inside the house so he doesn't bother anyone; it's not anyone's fault he was born with blood that all demons find enticing.

"I..."

"You must be Kamado Tanjirou, right?" The hashira doesn't look at him directly though, only down. And then Tanjirou realizes why when he notices that his eyes are completely white. "I'm Himejima Gyomei. I'll be taking care of you this week. Can I touch your face to have an idea how you look like?"

"Of course!" Tanjirou mumbles immediately, getting a little bit startled when Himejima kneels in front of him and cradles his face in his huge hands.

The Pillar is very gentle though; the tips of his fingers touch Tanjirou's skin like it's a delicate thing. He makes him blush at some point.

"You're really beautiful," Himejima comments before letting go of Tanjirou.

"I don't think–" Tanjirou stops himself; there's no point in arguing about that, instead he focuses on something more important: "You don't have to do this... I've been thinking about it and I can stay at home..."

"Everyone deserves to be free," Himejima says instead, before taking the boy in his arms. "Where do you want to go first?"

After a week they find themselves in the butterfly estate, Tanjirou feels bad because that means he won't be with Himejima again (he's a good friend) but he knows he has more important things to do.

"Stay here for a while," the stone hashira mumbles before pressing his lips against Tanjirou's temple. "I'll go see Oyakata-sama in the hashira headquarters and I'll be back soon."

"But..." Tanjirou is confused. Why is Himejima not saying goodbye?

He should ask him later.

Shinobu watches Gyomei walk inside the headquarters. He kneels like the others in front of Ubuyashiki before informing him about his week next to the Kamado boy. He doesn't say much about him though, which is a shame because all of them are curious... Instead Gyomei says that he's managed to get rid of a couple demons and even a lower moon with Tanjirou's help.

That last thing picks up everyone's interest. But the stone hashira doesn't say anything else. Except probably the most shocking thing Shinobu's ever heard:

"I'd like to request to be with Tanjirou permanently," he says then.

Shinobu notices that everyone around looks at Gyomei with surprise; it's true that none of them were pleased to hear they were going to babysit (although they have been informed the Kamado boy is actually eighteen years old) and Gyomei taking the job of permanent bodyguard would solve everyone else's problems, however... There's something else going on.

Even Sanemi is eyeing the stone hashira with curiosity.

"Interesting." Ubuyashiki observes and Shinobu swears that for a moment he looks amused. "Have you talked to Tanjirou about this?"

As if things weren't weird enough already, Gyomei immediately blushes at that.

"Not yet, Oyakata-sama."

"Well... Let's bring him here then," Ubuyashiki says before telling one of the kakushi to bring Tanjirou to the hashira headquarters.

"Oh... Hi! It's a pleasure to finally meet you all!" The most beautiful boy Shinobu has ever seen mumbles, before kneeling in front of Ubuyashiki as well.

"Tanjirou... Do you know Gyomei has requested to become your bodyguard permanently?"

The boy blushes, drawing everyone's attention again; Shinobu notices she's not the only one staring at Tanjirou intensely. Mitsuri's cheeks are slightly pink now and she's sighing dreamily every time the boy speaks.

"You don't have to, Himejima-san! Although I really appreciate it, you've been so kind to me... However, I don't want you to waste your precious time on me," Tanjirou says. "In fact, I don't want any of you to do that... I think I'm ready to go home and–"

"No!" All the hashira cut him off at the same time, surprising themselves and everyone around.

Ubuyashiki chuckles.

"Gyomei mentioned that being with you has allowed him to kill a lot of demons lately," Muichiro says then, trying not to look desperate. "So you'll be helping us, actually..."

"Oh!" Tanjirou's eyes glimmer beautifully at that; it seems like the boy loves helping others. "Then I'll do it gladly! So if Himejima-san wants–"

"Please! Give me a chance, my boy! I want to be your bodyguard next!"

As soon as Kyojuro says it, everyone starts fighting over the job position until Ubuyashiki presses a finger against his lips and shuts everyone up completely.

"Each of you will get to spend a week with Tanjirou," Ubuyashiki announces, like he knows what's actually going on. "Are you alright with that, Tanjirou?"

"Yes, of course!" The boy smiles, almost blinding everyone in the process. "I hope we get to become friends!"

Tanjirou is completely wrong about that, Shinobu thinks because everyone around her definitely wants to be more than friends with the beautiful boy, including herself.

Chapter 6

For almost a month you haven't woken up. After the 2nd day of you still not opening your eyes Mitsuri had to move you to the hospital ward of the estate so Shinobu could monitor you closer and have everything near her incase she needed it.

The wound on your head didn't fully heal until the fourth day. Which made the rest of the slayers realize your weren't a threat (except for Sanemi of course) Shinobu keeps a watchful eyes on you looking for ANY signs of you waking up. She trys keeping on a happy face and attitude but her closest friends and family knew how worried she was. Shinobu was much quicker to snap at people and get irritated. Especially at Sanemi. Dude could breathe too loud and she'd get annoyed.

Tengen and Obanai came over to drop off some presents for you if you woke up. Tengen bought you a beautiful hair brush that had very rare gems and Obanai was bringing a tea set and some story books. It was actually Mitsuris present but she had to go on a mission.

The two walked into the ward quietly seeing Shinobu sitting next to you with a sad expression. Its been awhile since they've seen her this sad since Kanaes death.

"She still not waking up?" Tengen asked looking at your sleeping form.

"Sadly no, But I'm not gonna loose hope"

The all of a sudden a miracle happened. You started groaning and stirring in your sleep like you were in a nightmare. All three stared with wide eyes while Shinobu tried gently shaking you awake but it wasn't working. A tick mark appeared on Tengens forhead. He leaner down next to your ear.

"WAKE UP BRAT!"

Your eyes shot open and started making angry noises and hit Tengens chest. Of course it didn't hurt him but it was kinda funny seeing you so grumpy right after sleeping for almost a month.

"Good morning sleepy head" Shinobu greeted with a big smile. You quit hitting Tengen and embraced her in a hug.

"Wha happen?"

"You were taking a long beauty nap. We all missed you"

"Especially you" Obanai said under his breath

Y/n looked at Iguro and admired his different color eyes and the snake on his shoulder. She thought he looked so cool.

Iguro face palmed while Tengen laughed loudly. Obanai asked why she acted so young and Shinobu explained that she's an age regressor so she can't pronounce certain words very well.

"I think I understand but why does she do it? What happened to her"

Shinobu frowned slightly as she looked at you trying to grab the gems hanging from his head band. Tengen didn't seem mad though. In fact it seemed like he was trying to play with you by leaning forward and backing away before you grabbed them.

"She hasn't told me anything about her life before turning into a demon but what we witnessed at the meeting it definitely seems like she has ptsd"

"Have you tried asking her?"

"What a great idea! Let me ask someone whose in the headspace of a two year old about their trauma! What could go wrong!"

"Alright! You made your point!"

"The master said he wanted to do another meeting since by the time he got there everyone was gone" Tengen interrupted.

"Don't even think about it.."

His fingers were in your mouth ready to bite down.

"Thats fine but Y/n needs a few days to recover. Tomioka and my girls have missed her" Shinobu smiles

Tengen laughs loudly finding it hilarious how the emo hashira already cared so much about a little demon.

"Mama..."

Y/n reached her arms out to Shinobu small tears in her eyes. She gladly embraced her baby in her arms petting her hair.

"I missed you Y/n"

"Me toos"

Obanai and Tengen left so the two could be alone. Y/n realized they were gone and ran after them. As Obanai opened the door Y/n hugged him from behind suprising him.

"Bye bye"

Obanai just nodded and did a small wave goodbye to her along with Tengen. The rest of the day consisted of you playing with the butterfly girls and sticking by Shinobus side. She wasn't complaining thought she missed you so much. There were a couple times throughout the few days Y/n would start hitting herself and crying if someone accidently slammed a door or raised there voice. So Shinobu decided to get you some noise canceling headphones. It helped tremendous and now there were far less tantrums to everyone's relief.

Mitsuri came back the day before the meeting and took you out to town with Obanai to get food. Halfway through the day you almost passed out becasue of the sun. So they got you a cute umbrella to shield you which helped. Mitsuri even convinced Obanai to let you hold his snake. Kubumaru seemed to like you just fine which made you very happy. Out of all the other slayers so far Mitsuri and Obanai were your favorites. He didn't really talk to you that much and still had some doubts but was getting used to you. (Mostly just to please Mitsuri)

When the day of the meeting finally came Shinobu could not get you to come out of your room. The door was locked and you were crying. Since the last meeting you were scared of Sanemi and since he was attending you were scared out of your mind.

"Dear, if you're worries about Sanemi, Mama promises he won't say or do anything to you okay?"

"No"

Shinobu barely heard it since it was so quiet. She started getting annoyed and if she kept pushing with no progression then her temper would take over. So Shinobu called Tengen and Giyu since you got along with them.

Giyu tried first

"Y/n can you come out"

"Nu"

Then Tengen tried

He banged the door loudly

"Open up brat!"

Yeahhhhh, that made it worse becasue now you were sobbing.

"Way to go Uzui"

Shinobu was ready to burst.

"Baby, I know you're scared but I promise you everything's gonna be just fine. Tengen, Giyu, and Mitsuri can even hold you the whole time if you want"

"I didn't-"

Shinobu kicks him and he holds back curses.

The door opened slowly to see you wearing a cute pair of light purple overalls with your white paci. Your eyes still were glowing purple from being so upset. You reached your arms up for Tengen whining.

"Geesh kid alright alright"

Tengen held you in his arms while you played with the dangling gems on his head band babbling happily. You loved being held in Tengens arms the most becasue he made you feel so small and protected with his big arms and muscles

The three made there way to the meeting while you happily sucked on your paci and layed your head on Tengens shoulder getting tired already.

"Dear, you need to stay awake we're almost there" Shinobu reminded. You just whined in annoyance and hugged Tengens neck. He slightly smiled at this which Shinobu caught out of the corner out of her eyes. She'd definitely pick on him later for it.

When the three got there all the other hasiras and Kagaya were there waiting. Sanemi looked like he wanted to storm out but had to stay becasue Kagaya had ordered him too and to give the demon a chance. Tengen slightly shook Y/n awake causing her to hit his back with her fists. Of course it didn't hurt him but a tick mark was still on his forhead. He puts you down on the ground much to your dissapointemt. You were about to have a tantrum when you saw Obanai and Mitsuri. You quickly ran to them with your arms out. She scoops you up and runs her cheek against yours lovingly.

"Mitsi Mitsi!"

"AWWWWW Iguro, did you hear what she called me?! Isn't she so cute?!"

Obanai just nodded

You reached out one of your arms and reached for kubumaru.

"Snek"

"Let's settle down now we have important matters to discuss"

Mitsuri put you on the ground and everyone bowed to him. You tried doing the same but accidently fell on your face causing your nose to start bleeding. Tears started leaking from your eyes while you held your nose.

"Y/n let me see honey" Shinobu walked over to you and carefully inspected your nose.

"You'll be okay baby. It should be healed by tonight"

A beautiful purple butterfly then landed on your nose healing it almost instantly before flying away. Shinobu and everyone else were pretty shocked. They've never seen a blood demon art like that before.

"I see we've figured out Y/n blood demon art. Very beautiful indeed. Could you come up here little one?"

Y/n hesitated grabbing onto Shinobu but she encouraged you to go see Kagaya so you did but held her hand until you got to him. You sat down in front of him but kept eye contact on the floor looking a bit blank.

"You need to look at the master you-" Sanemi starter but Tengen, Giyu, and Shinobu were glaring him down daring him to say anything else. Kagaya didn't take this as an insult and started to speak.

"Its nice to meet you Y/n I'm aware that you're a demon. Have you ever ate a human or attacked another person"

You tensed up after that and started to cry.

"I-i shove Mitsi" you barely were even able to say it becasue you were crying so much.

Kagaya reached out to touch you on your head but all the slayers (Even Sanemi) yelled

"MASTER NO"

Kagaya was shocked at this becasue none of the slayers ever yelled at him. Except for Sanemi when he didn't respect him yet.

Kagaya nodded in understanding

"Little one it's alright. I'm sure Kanroji forgives you"

"Of course I forgive her! She didn't do it out of spite she was just scared!"

"See, nobody is upset with you. If that's the only violent thing you've done I'd say you're the best demon I've ever met"

Y/n looked up and smiled brightly leaping forward and biting his shoulder. Sanemi was quick to take his sword and charge at you. Kagaya was quick to see it and put his hand out signaling for him to stop.

"But master she attacked-"

Sanemi saw you stop biting him and saw that there were hardly any marks on his shoulder. You noticed him and hugged Kagaya burying yourself into his chest shaking.

"Sanemi, you need to treat Y/n with more respect. She's hasn't yet done anything to deserve the mistreatment you've given her. You need to apologize"

Sanemi was obviously irritated but bowed down in front of you too.

"My apologies Master and Y/n"

"I forgive you, What about you Y/n? Will you give him another chance?"

Y/n thinks for a moment but then hesitantly nods her head.

"Is okay"

You gently patted his head like your friends and Mama did to you. Mitsuri awed at the adorable display in front of her. Sanemi blushed in embarrassment and quickly walked away. Tengen teased him and that led into an argument so Shinobu took you and quickly took you home.

And this trait of yours got the other bonten members question your ability in the gruesome world they were involved it.

It wasn't as if they didn't trust their boss's choice but they did try not to be their "usual self around you much. Like for instance, Sanzu stopped doing drugs around you, Ran and rindo the sadistic Brothers made sure to never go anywhere near you with blood stains on them and koko kept his mouth shut even though it was mostly only to not say something to you that he would regret later. And kakucho along with Mochi tries their best to keep these dorks in line whenever something that seem to go out of place. More than often being the infamous bonten trio, Haitani brother's vs Sanzu.

Sure they were dangerous criminals who kill people for a living but oh man— they weren't inconsiderate pricks who would traumatize their sweet, innocent teammate for the rest of their lives.

As a doctor, you always cared for them. Everytime they got involved in a fight, you were there, wide awake in the middle of the night treating their wounds, asking them if it's okay and if they're fine or if they need any mental or physical assistance even if it was tiniest of papercut. This made the members adore you and honestly, you were just a cute little fluffball for who they would do absolutely anything— until they realized maybe you weren't all how you seemed to be?

Mikey sent you out on a mission one day along with the bonten higher-ups. And sure enough, the members were arguing with their boss for doing this? They treated you as if you're a fragile glass, spoiling you with gifts, sweets, designer outfits, rare collections, you name it. Oh‐ would you believe me if I told you even Sanzu, yes the one and only sanzu "akashi" haruchiyo went out of his way to talk against mikey this time?

Sure you said you'd be able to handle this by yourself but did they trust you? Nope. Why, you ask? Because nothing about you was scary- well, nothing except the way you often greet others by saying "yoo-hoo" after suddenly showing up next to them, often startling others.

The members made sure to often look for you in the middle of the fights, making sure you were always safe and not out of reach for even a second. When the fight was just about to get over, they realized something— something that they dreaded, something they hoped that never happened. You were missing. They went into full on panic mode until they spotted you standing behind some partly abolished part of the building.

"Just because you haven't been beheaded don't think that you're safe from harm. There are people like me who use poison with their swordsmanship. I may be the only one among Bonten who is unable to torture people but creating a poison that's lethal to them: that's quite impressive don't you think? Oh! Pardon me I guess you can't hear me if you're dead. Silly me!"

They couldn't believe their eyes, sure theyre heard the saying that goes.."never trust what you hear until u see it happening right in front of you" but was it really the truth? The sweet, naive little girl killing people ? Sure they couldn't believe it, but oh man, they were so damn proud after seeing you unfold right before their eyes. Sure you were charming and alluring with that sweet smile on ur face, but even with that you looked so mysterious and they finally found the reason.

Needless to say, this only strengthened the bond with the guys as they started teaching you to fight, to use guns and many more gang stuffs.

Afterall they were dangerous criminals who kill people for a living and u were an angel— but the angel isn't always one too.

don't remember what actually triggered this idea but I wonder ..

was the Matoba leader before Seiji his father ? it's mostly yes but I don't remember this actually said outright anywhere before, was it mentioned it was his father ?

anyway, do you remember that one phrase that Seiji love to keep saying alot either to Natsume or Natori ??

I know Seiji hated mostly because of this line of thought and how he can be messed up when it comes to that ...

this whole scene got me thinking alot that I felt him saying this here followed by this ..

don't know about you but this whole scene and dialogues felt to me it holds more weight than it looks like .. it felt it has some deep personal meaning to him than it seems which is why that led Natori to ask that question, if he ever wanted to stop being an exorcist ...

now, what does that mean exactly ?? I thought alot and tried to understand the hidden meaning and unsaid words, but it never clicked, nothing did which led me losing my mind for a long time ><

not until we learned more about him and Shinobu in the current storyline and something clicked

Seiji is the younger while Shinobu the older right ? she should've been the future leader of the Matoba ... do you remember why she wasn't picked or favored as the next leader ??

it was because Seiji was more powerful than her, he has such a talent that she can never have that even though some believed she's better overall because Seiji is hard to control but for the future of the clan Seiji is the best choice in the end.

also, it might've been clear who's the leader fav child is if we hadn't heard about Shinobu till now and that little Seiji was talking about the leader taught him this and that sometimes.

this line might actually be about him and his sister, something the Matoba leader before him taught him (his father mostly) which he followed through himself with his children.

he used them as mere tools for the future of the clan, at that time the clan was pretty weak and about to lose their position in the exorcist world. between the two only Seiji hold the key to give them the glory they sought again so no matter how good Shinobu was, no matter how hard she might've worked, all of that will never amount to anything. just because Seiji was far more powerful than her. Seiji having bad manner and attitude than her ? hard to control ? simple just fix it by teaching him. right ~

back then I couldn't fully grasp the meaning of his expression here, but now I feel I get it better. I mean if all his father taught him is using people as tool or how to be cruel and never care what other think (he used his own children as tools and Seiji experience it firsthand yaay) .. having a teacher who teach the true valuable things ?? such an option was never there for Seiji and never will at the time.

"How long is he going to continue to pretend to be normal ?"

Seiji was never normal because of his power and natural talent, he was bound by duty and have invisible chains on his life and true desire just because he was this powerful that he got used as a tool and by none other than his father and on top of all his sister hated him for it too.

on the other hand Natsume has the same power as him or far greater than him yet he's free and not shackles be this power of his unlike him.

this is a "what if" kind of random thought and ideas and we don't even have any kind of direct/indirect info so all of this is pure assumptions on my part. it refused to leave me ever since it clicked so why suffer alone, just thinking about Seiji and Shinobu is just yeaah -heavy sigh-

Shinobu: His favorite things tend to have tons of calories like cheap snacks or fast food, and his staple food is sugar, which is nowhere near healthy at all.

Takeru: Well, he makes a lot of unnecessary movements.

Shinobu: Totally.

Ito: (I doubted that reason is enough to convince me.)

Takeru: Speaking of Roka, I wonder what he’s up to these days. He’s still alive and kicking and just goes anywhere.

At least, I get a letter or postcard from her family’s house about once a year saying, "I'm still alive."

Shinobu: So you were reminded of her every time that happens, right?

Takeru: I think so.

Shinobu: I see. That's kind of nice actually.

Takeru: The staff at this store really are like jellyfish, both now and then. They’re always floating around and restless.

Shinobu: Well, this isn’t about Roka-san.

That kind of person probably live happily no matter where they are, right?

Takeru: Yeah. Well, once we have a chance to reunion, let's all have a drink together.

"Everything should be alright." Without trying to figure out what it was, I shook off the indescribable feeling I felt the moment Aizawa-kun spoke those words cheerfully. That is something that I shouldn’t touch. Mika-san probably noticed my curiosity, but he didn't come looking for me either. The training ended without incident, and the atmosphere became peaceful again.

Takeru: …..It must be inconvenient for young lady to have to change clothes in the office bathroom every time. Let's think of something.

Ito: It's pretty spacious and clean, so I have no problem....

……By the way, “young lady”?

Takeru: Hmm? It's a nickname. Calling someone "deputy" isn't very cute.

Takeru: The guys from the dorm often drink and eat at their residence. Me, Mao, and Kou-chan tend to join in too.

Shinobu: Today, Akke, Kou-san…. and Shizuka-san is there too! Would you like to come?

Everyone Wants A Brother Like You Part 3 Senjuro

Nezuko wasn't sure how to take what had happened yesterday or why Inosuke tackled her.

But eventually she just decided to chalk it up to Inosuke's usual weird actions and let it go since Tanjiro seemed to and to be honest whatever Inosuke was doing wasn't all that bad anyways. Although it was both confusing and sweet he was suddenly going around proclaiming to be their brother now. He was probably just roughhousing as a way to show affection in his own weird way. Oh well. She'd still busy herself with other important things while waiting for Tanjiro's injuries to heal. She honestly didn't mind helping Shinobu and Aoi take care of everyone in the meantime. It felt awkward just lazing around while the others did all the work. So she volunteered to help with the cleaning today. Broom bristles sweeping again hardwood sounded out as she hummed and pushed the broom back and forth sweeping up the small dirt pile.

"N-Nezuko?"

She paused turning around with a blink only to smile. "Senjuro! Hi!"

The sweeping paused. Her smile widened. The teen boy with flame colored hair and bright orange eyes. He has nervously smiled back to her shuffling nervously in the doorway and clasping his hands together. She honestly wasn't expecting to see him here since most of the time he would be with Rengoku as the flame Haishira was still recovering or visiting his friends or keeping to himself helping Aoi with something.

"How's Kyojuro doing? I heard he started breathing better."

Senjuro nodded looking away. "Um..B-Brother's doing a lot better thanks. H-He's busy right now and I'm not busy so I was thinking that...m-maybe I could help you with your cleaning today."

Nezuko smiled brightly. "I'd love that! If you could help me move the furniture to sweep under it'd be a really big help." She gestured to the bed she was currently trying to sweep under.

Senjuro lit up immediately. "R-Really? Yeah! I can totally do that!"

For the next ten minutes there was silence afterwards besides the sounds of Senjuro moving furniture and then moving it back into place once Nezuko was done sweeping the floor under it. Thanks to his help, she was able to get it done much faster and was able to start scrubbing the floors right after-

"I-Ill help you!," Senjuro insisted with a smile, "I'll even go get you the water you need."

"Are you sure? You already helped so much."

"Yeah! Besides you're gonna need help moving all the furniture again to mop under them aren't you?"

"Hm. Well I guess you have a point. Alright! We can get done much faster that way!"

Rinse and repeat the previous progress only it took a little longer as she had to literally scrub the floors on her hands and knees. She was surprised when Senjuro suddenly dunked another scrub brush in the bucket and actually got on his own hands and knees and proceeded to help her scrub down the floors of the large room with her. She sent a smile his way... Senjuro lit up a light pink at her cute smile before snapping back to his work and scrubbing down the floors with her. It was way faster with him helping her and soon both were standing in the hallway outside the room sighing. Senjuro had taken the bucket before she could grab it insisting on dumping out the water for her which she was grateful for.

"Alright! It looks like I'm all done!" She beamed at the spotless room before then.

"What? Y-You don't need anymore help with anything else? W-What about the sheets or windows?"

"Tanjiro already helped me clean the sheets yesterday and Aoi already cleaned the windows before I came in. So you don't have to do anything else for me, but I'm grateful for the help, Senjuro. That was very nice of you."

Senjuro sputtered a bit thinking- "MY BROTHER!!" He shouted out startling both of them and making her blink. "I mean Kyojuro!" He quickly held up his hands flustered. "He's still expecting his food! If you're not busy how about you come visit him with me?" He gulped a bit pink faced. "I-Im sure he'd really like to see you again Nezuko."

Nezuko paused blinking at him before humming. That was a good point. She really hadn't seen Kyojuro since she was changed back to human and began staying here. Tanjiro and his friends had visited him plenty of times but she hadn't seen him too often. 

"Ok." She nodded at him smiling. "Why not? It'll be fun to see him again."

Senjuro smiled at her again in relief. "Ok! C-Come on! We need to get his food from the kitchen first but he'll be really happy to see us!"

"Ok!"

He gestured for her to follow him before walking away leading the way all the way to the kitchen which was mostly empty except for one of the butterfly girls getting a few apples. She greeted the both of them before scurrying away allowing them both access to the kitchen alone. Huh...Guess everyone else was busy doing other things, and it already looked like Aoi cleaned up here so there was no other reason for her to be here until dinner time. But Nezuko sat down and watched patiently as Senjuro got to work grabbing a frying pan, cutting board, and a decently sharp knife. He glanced back at her once with a smile. 

"Are you hungry too? I-I can make you some food too! In fact let's make Tanjiro some too!"

Nezuko stared at him in awe. "Really? That's so nice of you! Tanjiro would love that!"

He smiled wider. "Well let's get started. Can you hand me some bento boxes from the shelf behind you?"

Nezuko did as he asked placing four small bento boxes on the counter in front of him as he turned back to his work. Frying, cutting, placing, and cooking whatever he grabbed at before turning and starting to fill in the boxes with whatever he was cooking.

"That smells delicious, Senjuro! I can't believe you made this all by yourself!" She gushed mouth watering at the filled boxes.

The boxes were absolutely filled with rice and fried beef and onions but set on top of the big portions was smaller additions of pan fried tofu, grilled scallions, and two boiled eggs per box. It all smelt absolutely delicious and heavenly. She could eat all four of them if she wasn't so polite. She looked back up when a warm kettle was set onto a rather large tray along with a few cups. 

"Well, it helps that I was used to cooking for myself for a long time. You pick up a few things after doing it so many times.. B-But I'm glad you think so. Come on! Let's take this to Kyojuro. He's waiting for us."

He placed two  of the bentos onto the large tray before placing lids on one other for Tanjiro later. She happily carried the other two since Senjuro seemed to have his hands full and going ahead and digging into hers as they walked. She let out a pleased hum as soon as the food hit her mouth. A shy but pleased smile was given to her by Senjuro.

"D-Do you like it?"

"It's so good! I wish I had food like this all the time!," she gushed pushing another egg into her mouth.

"Yeah... It's too bad. If we lived closer I could cook for you a lot more."

"I just might have to visit you all more often then!"

He lit up hopefully. "I'd like that! ...You know. I really like cooking. I cook all the time for my brother and father. If I had anymore family, I'd cook for them too!"

"Aw. That's so sweet of you. You and Kyojuro are so nice!"

"Yep! That's us!... Y'know I would cook for a wife too if I ever meet the right one."

"Really?"

He nodded shyly. "Yeah...Wow. Speaking of family.." he tried shyly looking at her again. "I'm amazed Tanjiro and Kyojuro aren't brothers themselves. They're so alike and their names even almost rhyme."

Nezuko hummed thinking it over. "...Now that I think about it, they are pretty similar in personality." She giggled. "But they're both so caring. It's nice to see Tanjiro view someone as his own big brother."

"Hm...Well, you know there's a way where he could be Tanjiro's big brother."

Nezuko looked at him blinking as he smiled lightly pink faced. "Oh...Does your father want to adopt us?"

Senjuro nearly dropped the tray as he stared at her. "....I-...No. Not really..." He would've facepalmed himself if he could. But instead he looked down in embarrassment. "I was actually...maybe....m-marriage.... between.....two of..our families...."

There was silence for a moment before Nezuko gave him a pitiful look. "I'm sorry Senjuro but Tanjiro and I have no other sisters, and I certainly couldn't marry him."

"N-No! I-I Wasn't talking about Kyojuro!!" He stopped and looked at her flustered. "N-Nezuko, I-.... Y-You-..." He sputtered out trying to desperately say something similar to a functional sentence as she blinked confused at him. "I..really....well...You are....Pretty neat!"

Nezuko blinked again. "Thank you. I think you're really nice too. Are you alright?" She tilted her head at his shaky stuttery form. "You look about ready to collapse."

He gulped nervously. "I-"

"Nezuko." Senjuro jumped with a little yelp as both turned and found Aoi carrying a basket and raising a brow. "I thought you were going to come help me go pick food from the garden when you were done."

"Oh that's right!" She turned to Senjuro with an apologetic look. "I'm so sorry. I completely forgot I promised to help Aoi in the garden. But I will absolutely come visit Kyojuro first thing tomorrow morning! Thank you so much for the food though!" She gave a quick bow. "I'll be sure to give Tanjiro his!"

"But I-"

He didn't get another chance to speak before Nezuko already turned and quickly hurried after Aoi towards the end of the hallway.. although she did give him a quick look back at his flustered state before shaking her head again and quickly hurrying after her. Senjuro stood there for a moment before sighing, turning, and continuing to walk away. A few hallways away a room opened and a smiling face turned to him. Bandages around his middle and a patch over his left eye. An older copy of Senjuro almost.

"SENJURO!! There you are! So how'd it go!? Did my sweet brother manage to sweep Nezuko off her feet?"

Senjuro sighed. "Not exactly."

22. Rengoku Kyojuro.

I don't think man can dance. I firmly believe in my heart he has all the intentions and passion in the world but he's stiff as a board with two left feet. Unlike his grace when fighting, he never really had much opportunity to learn or practice dancing, so I imagine he wouldn't be very experienced. Reader doesn't care though, they love him that way. And he loves them, will take any and every opportunity to hold them and make them smile even if he looks and feels a little silly (and vice versa!!!).

So they dance (reader's skills tbd, honestly doesn't matter). One person convinces the other, maybe as a way to cheer them up, who is who doesn't matter. It can be anywhere. Their home on their own. At a festival. Their wedding. Modern AU anything.

It's cute, it's warm, it's all smiles and blushy cheeks and bright eyes as your fingers interlace, swaying and turning.... Pure, easy intimacy. Fluff and/or hurt/comfort at its best. I just want to give this man as much domestic happiness as possible, he deserved so much more.

Wait that's actually so cute and yeah he deserves the whole world man.

Rengoku Kyojuro x Reader

"Dance with me."

Kyojuro and you had always had a complicated past. After the whole mission he had with who you found out was an upper moon demon. You felt terrible. You noticed how he became slightly distant towards you and you were determined to figure it out.

There was a festival in the nearest town later in the evening and everyone was going. Mitsuri had told you he was going to be there as well. This was what you needed.

Having trouble even going up to him or talk to him the past two weeks have been rough. So you needed to catch him off guard.

You dressed in a fiery red kimono with a white bow tied around your waist. You also wore a red charm in your hair, which was tied up neatly. Thanks to the help of Shinobu.

You entered the town and looked around in awe. The sun was setting and the lights were simmering ever so slightly. This place was beautiful.

Remembering why you were here you decided to look around the food stalls for the flame hashira. He seemed stressed, like he was running from something. You heard from Shinobu that as soon as he was able to walk, he was practicing and back fighting again.

This left you a bit unsettled, you hoped you could talk some sense into him. Especially since Shinobu also mentioned he had hurt himself countless times while training. He shouldn't be pushing himself. And it pained you to even think about him doing so.

You walked around for a little longer before you see his bright hair poking out in one of the restaurants. He sat with Tengen and his wives.

He smiled. Oh his smile. You couldn't help but smile too. It was always so bright and filled with emotion. You walked over.

"Hey! Uzui's and Kyojuro." Kyojuro immedietly avoided you and moved around in his seat, as if he was anxious.

"Well, I think my wives and I will be going to get some drinks!" Tengen stood up, lighting tapping your back in encouragement. Whispering low enough for you to hear.

"Take care of him okay?" He helped his wives and went on his way.

You took Tengen's seat, which was in front of Kyojuro.

"Kyojuro?" You looked at him. He was looking down at the food, which he picked at. Something unlike him.

"Are you doing alright? You haven't really talked to me the past couple weeks." You brought up. It pained you to see he seemed to not want to be around you.

"I'm fine." Frowning at his response you stole one of his california rolls. "Hey-"

"What's up with you." Narrowing your eyes at the owl eyed man. He finally looked up at you and held eye contact. His fire like eyes, sparked.

"Nothing is wrong I ju-" He seemed bothered so you cut him off.

"Walk with me?" You stood up and held your hand. The music around the town was loud, but not too loud. It was perfect. A walk could do you both good.

He looks up at you and smiles. He couldn't help it. He missed you. Even in fear of his own thoughts, he missed your smile, your laugh, and the way your eyes lit up any room you walked into.

"Absolutely." He interlocks his hand with yours.

And so the two of you were walking, hands connected in silence. Even if there was no conversation between him and you. You felt at ease. You missed this too. But you couldn't help but still feel off. The way he wasn't smiling as much, and just looking off into space. As if you were not there.

You looked around the town. People were laughing and dancing. You had an idea.

"Kyojuro!" You jumped in front of him, startling him. "Dance with me?" You looked at him and he brought a hand to the back of his neck, rubbing awkwardly.

"I haven't danced in a long time."

"Come onnn." You tug at his hand and bring him towards where the others were waltzing.

The music was slow. Pulling Kyojuro closer, placing a hand in his once more. Lacing your fingers with his own. Another hand rested on his shoulder. He looked lost as he held his free hand up.

"Uhm.."

You laughed. And he watched. You threw your head back slightly before looking back at him. Taking his free hand you place it on your waist. A light pink dusted his cheeks. "You hold here okay?"

He stood awkwardly and stiff. You noticed this and couldn't help but smile at him. He was usually so chill and flowing with his movements. Yet he couldn't dance?

"You seem stiff hot stuff." You joked around earning a soft chuckle to erupt from him. "I never learned how to dance like this." He admitted shamefully.

Even if he didn't, he loved being close to you again. You've shared hugs before, but this felt different. In a good way.

"Oops, my apologies!" A man had bumped into Kyojuro causing him to stumble closer to you and tighten his grip. A warm feeling rose in your chest and your cheeks felt aflame.

You giggled softly before moving slowly. "Follow my lead."

Although he stepped on your toes a couple times, and lost rhythm, you had fun.

Leaning your head on his shoulder, swaying slowly to the music. "Why did you ignore me for so long...?"

He stayed silent for a minute. "I felt weak." You frowned and cocked your head back to look at him. E/c eyes meeting his own blood orange ones.

The music suddenly speeds up a bit and the two of you start turning. Holding eye contact. "You are not weak." Mumbling out before turning your head down to watch his feet, careful to avoid his missing steps.

"I could have died Y/n." A great sentence to shove a knife through your heart. Your eyes tear up. Grateful you looked down. "But you didn't, you were strong enough."

"Barely." A wave of awkward silence fell.

"I missed you." You mumble. He removes your laced hands to bring it up under your chin, pulling you back to look into his eyes. It hurt him to see your eyes so watery and glossed over.

"I'm sorry." He mutters. "I just didn't know how to come to you, I was scared. What if I'm too weak to protect you one day?"

You melted. "Kyojuro.."

"Fuck." He loved the way his name rolled of your tongue, how it rang in his ears.

"I just love you so much Y/n. I want to be by your side, to protect you.. but what if I can't? What if you get hurt." You swore you could hear your heartbeat in your ears from his confession.

He was nervous, but he was telling you. Scared of rejection, for he could be too weak for you.

"I love you too Kyojuro. You are not weak, we'll fight together. We'll do lots together, on the days you are weak I will be stronger. For you." You smiled, tears threatening to spill. He deserved so much, you could never understand if anyone ever hated this man. He was the warmest, kindest, and selfless man you have ever met.

His thumb wiped the tears and he pulled you into a hug. His arms wrapped tightly around you. By now the two of you had stopped spinning around, just swaying slowly back and forth.

"I missed you too and I'm terribly sorry I couldn't have much confidence to approach you." His hand rubbed up and down your back.

"I forgive you. But please, don't ever do that again. It hurt to see you smile with others." He heart ached at your words, he regretted ever doing what he did. "I promise."

You look into his eyes and he leans down. His breath softly hitting your lips. You closed your eyes, awaiting a kiss.

Nothing. You crack open one eye and realize he's admiring you. "Kyojuro if you don't kiss me right now-" He cut you off the moment he knew he could kiss you. The kiss felt meaningful, it was soft and in sync, unlike the dance the two of you shared. His lips were rough, not too rough. Yours were soft. He wish he had done this sooner, but oh was the wait worth it.

The feel you melting into his arms, into his lips. He smiled and pulled back. "I love you."

"You suck at dancing by the way."
