Haruhi’s special day
Part 1
Yuragi: Thanks for the meal.
In the air-conditioned restaurant, Yuragi took the last bite and put his hands together to pray.
Haruhi: Satisfied now?
Yuragi: Yes. Although it was gone in an instant.
---A coffee shop near the House. "I heard the parfaits there are delicious, so I want to go and try for myself." That’s what Yuragi said before he invited me here and all I did was just order a drink. While I was waiting for him to finish….. Yuragi, who sat across from me, looked like he didn’t want to leave and opened the menu again.
Yuragi: This strawberry one looks pretty good, too.
Haruhi: I don’t wanna be a killjoy if you wanna eat it, but won't that take up space for Taiga's cake?
Yuragi: ….I'll leave it be for now.
Taiga was baking a cake for my birthday at the House at the moment. Yuragi originally came with that intention.
Yuragi: That's right. Thanks for Okoge video yesterday. It was so cute.
Haruhi: I know right.
Yuragi: Yeah. I watched it so many times that I ended up falling asleep without realizing it.
Haruhi: That’s too much.
Yuragi: I also want that one. You mentioned the other day, didn’t you? Okoge held a toy in his mouth and brought it back.
Haruhi: Eh, I didn't send that one?
Yuragi: I only got the one that had him playing with a toy.
Haruhi: The one before that, huh? Wait a sec, I'll send it your way right now.
Yuragi: ...So cute.
Let me repay you with my favorite one.
Haruhi: What's it?
Yuragi: When I went to the cat cafe with Mao and everyone.
Haruhi: Ah, you already told me that. How was it?
Yuragi: They were so friendly, we really had loads of fun.
Haruhi: Oh, you're right. They were eating really vigorously here.
Yuragi: Yeah. I want to go play again. I don't know when I'll be able to go, but there will definitely be a second round.
Perhaps remembering that time, Yuragi rested his chin on his hand and gazed out the window.
Haruhi: (It was that fun, huh?)
Haruhi: Then, how about we go there now?
Yuragi: Eh... You’re sure? It's hot outside, you’re gonna melt for sure.
Haruhi: That cat cafe is inside the mall, right? Taking a taxi and train should be no problem.
Plus, I'm free until dinner.
Yuragi: Thanks.
Meeting the cats can get rid of all the fatigue. I'm sure Haruhi will be pleased.
Haruhi: Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
Part 2
The cat cafe was fully booked, but luckily we managed to squeeze in thanks to the cancellation of reservation within the same-day. Yuragi and I spent plenty of time enjoying the cat cafe.
Haruhi: That tabby cat always stayed with Yuragi.
Yuragi: I think this guy remembered me because we played together a lot the last time I came.
Haruhi: That's pretty cunning of you.
Yuragi: Yeah. Also, remember that white cat next to you, Haruhi?
It would move around a few times whenever it saw a customer left alone.
Haruhi: To save people from loneliness, huh?
Yuragi: Kind, isn't it?
Yuragi talked with joy, listing the characteristics of almost all of the cats in the cafe.
Haruhi: (He really loves cats, doesn't he?)
Yuragi: ….Hey, you’re good at games, right?
Haruhi: ? Well, depends on the type.
Yuragi: Then, join me.
Haruhi: …..?
Just when I thought how suddenly the topic had been changed, we were already at the arcade. And the machine that Yuragi stopped in his tracks was...
Haruhi: Crane Game?
Yuragi: Yeah. Aruko new item.
Haruhi: It certainly is a game, but this type isn't really my specialty.
Yuragi: So many kinds….... Oh, I like the one in the middle on the right.
Haruhi: Are you even listening?
Yuragi: Is that a no?
Haruhi: ……
Haruhi: Well, giving it a try wouldn’t hurt.
No hard feelings if I fail, okay?
Yuragi: Sure.
I'll just ask someone else if it comes to that.
Haruhi: That's a relief.
I put in a few credits from my card and started by checking the arm.
Haruhi: (It doesn't seem like a bad setup. If this thing works properly, I might be able to get it.)
(...Oh, it moved a little.)
Watching the arm descend, I already prepared to add even more credits…
Haruhi: ...Ah. I think I got this.
Yuragi: Eh?
Just when I thought the arm had knocked Aruko away, it hooked onto the tag attached to it. The prize, caught in the arm with ease, was carried straight to the exit.
Yuragi: Wow.
Haruhi: That was cheaper than I expected…. Here you go.
Yuragi: Exactly what you were aiming for?
Haruhi: Pure luck. From time to time, but it does happen.
Yuragi: I see.
Thanks, Haruhi.
Haruhi: You're welcome.
(Like always, he’s clearly asking for what he wants. Nothing can cloud his desire at all.)
Just because it's my birthday, he didn’t act unnecessarily considerate. Yuragi is always Yuragi at the end of the day.
Haruhi: (But maybe it's because he's like that that it's easy to be around him.)
Yuragi: …….
Haruhi: ...Well, the preparations should be done by now, so I guess it's time to head home.
Yuragi: ?
Haruhi: Or do you think it would be better if you kept me here a little longer?
Yuragi: …..!
Part 3
Yuragi: (Haruhi said “kept”...)
(So he noticed?)
Haruhi: Just a guess. Taiga asked you to take me out, didn’t he?
Not just because of the cake, maybe they are preparing for a whole birthday party or something.
Yuragi: (I see. Harui knew everything… and still went along with me.)
(The parfait, the cat cafe, Aruko… Everything.)
If you'd noticed, you should have told me earlier.
We could have just relaxed at the first cafe without making a few stops and coming all the way here.
Haruhi: Ah, not that I care.
We would end up going to those places someday anyway. Just consider it a normal hangout in our free time, will ya?
Yuragi: ……
(In other words...)
(It wasn't about stalling for time, he simply went along with me because it was my wish?)
Haruhi: ? Was I wrong?
Yuragi: ….No.
Haruhi, you’re surprisingly kind, you know that?
Haruhi: Did you get carried away by the mood?
Yuragi: Yeah. That’s why I'll keep hanging out with you.
Haruhi: Seriously, you really left a lot of space for tsukkomi.
Well, for now, just go easy on me.
Yuragi: Got it.
Even if he didn’t fully understand what’s going on, he wouldn't say, "I won't hang out with you." What Haruhi said wasn’t out of his character at all, I thought.
Yuragi: (Maybe this is what it's like to feel "comfortable.")
After Haruhi’s birthday celebration, Taiga and Sei were cleaning up. "The main character and the guest should take it easy". Hearing that, Haruhi and I watched them from the sofa as the decorations were removed.
Yuragi: Taiga and Sei really prepared a lot.
Taiga made a lot that they couldn't even fit on the table. The decorations were amazing too.
Haruhi: The decorations were prepared by Sei. Is this supposed to be a birthday party for a grown-up?
Yuragi: But you’re happy, aren't you?
Haruhi: Well, let’s just say I’m grateful. But those dudes really can just keep it simple.
Yuragi: ……..
(As expected, he didn’t deny it.)
Haruhi.
Haruhi: Hmm?
Yuragi: Happy birthday. I didn't get to say it properly before.
Haruhi: As sudden as ever.
But, anyway, thanks.
Okoge: Meow.
Yuragi: Did Okoge come to celebrate too?
Okoge: Meow.
Yuragi: ...Oh. Since it's your birthday, let me take a picture of you and Okoge.
Haruhi, hold him.
Haruhi: Huh? Well, okay, I guess?
Okoge sat quietly in Haruhi’s arms. All I had to do was press the shutter. Even though I was ready to take a picture anytime.....
Yuragi: …....
Haruhi: Yuragi?
Yuragi: I think I'll join in.
Haruhi: Wait, what?
Yuragi: Haruhi, take a selfie. Okoge, in the center you go.
I sat back down on the sofa I had been sitting on earlier and handed the camera to Haruhi.
Haruhi: Okoge in the center? Where did the “my birthday” part go now?
Yuragi: Look, Okoge. Can you see the camera?
Haruhi: You really just do whatever you want.
Okoge: Meow~?
Yuragi: You know what a camera is? It’s that square thingy Haruhi is holding.
Haruhi: Hello, my hand is almost at its limit.
Yuragi: ! Okoge is facing the camera. Haruhi.
Haruhi: Yeah, yeah. Then, Yuragi. Face this way.

Mao’s special day
Part 1
"Everything is just so you, Mao."
I couldn’t help but feel a bit annoyed by those words, still….... If those words were said by that person, I guess I wouldn’t mind acting a bit spoiled.
Mao: (Oh, Riku-san?)
Riku: Mao, good work. I've been waiting.
Mao: For me?
Riku: I thought I'd check in on that case while I went out for some business.
Didn’t you receive an unreasonable complaint from the client's family?
Mao: I sure did.
Riku: Your reaction is telling me that it has already been dealt with.
Mao: I would say it's more like I've already taken measures.
She's a bit of an overprotective mother, so for the next “friend” character substitute, she will be accompanying me and my client as well. Let’s just say, it’s all settled for now.
How I respond will depend on how she reacts that day.
Riku: Seems like you won’t be needing help from the Negotiation Dept. this time. Well, just in case, I'll be ready to act if something happens.
Mao: Thank you.
After nodding at my words, Riku-san took out a box of sweets.
Riku: A reward for reducing my workload.
Mao: ….Chocolate? Do I look like Yuragi?
Riku: Who else is in this room with me? You like sweet things, don't you?
Mao: ……Ah, yeah. Thank you.
(...People tend to think I only like spicy things. I never thought someone would bring me this)
Riku: I kinda have the impression that Mao likes sweet things quite a bit.
Since back then—
….Actually never mind. In the end, we didn't go after all.
Mao: What are you even talking about?
Riku: You see, it was two years ago, I think?
Summer Fruit Afternoon Tea or something like that.
Mao: Ahh.
You probably mean the cafe I happened to find on the internet. Everyone got really excited about going together back then.
(...I see. So that’s where he’s getting that impression, huh…)
He still remembered one or two things about people even from way back then, that’s why he gave this to me as a "reward." I was reminded again that Riku-san was that kind of person.
Riku: But in the end, I got too busy and things didn’t go as planned.
As he spoke, Riku-san thought for a moment, then pursed the corners of his mouth as if he'd just come up with a brilliant idea.
Riku: Hey, if you’re up for it again this year, why don't you let me make up for it?
How about some afternoon tea with everyone?
Part 2
Mao: (...Smells nice)
The aroma of lemon jam on scones made my cheeks all relaxed.
Kyoya: Mao-kun, do you often come for afternoon tea?
Mao: Well, I've come here a few times with clients.
Soyogu: This place does suit you. Not to mention, that’s some beautiful eating manners you have there.
Mao: Thanks…… By the way, don’t you think it’s quite an interesting line-up we have here.
Riku: That's true. Actually, I invited Ai, Yuzuru, Kou, and Yuragi as well. But our schedules didn't match up at all.
Mao: Basically the same group of people who went there two years ago.
Kyoya: I never thought Riku-san would invite me to afternoon tea after two years, though.
Riku: So you don’t think it’s something I would do?
Kyoya: I wouldn’t go so far to say it’s not in line with your personality or out-of-character.
Riku: Wordy much?
I mean, everyone were really excited two years ago, so...
I hope I can finally fulfill that promise this year.
Kyoya: Haha. Even so, for someone without a sweet tooth like Riku-san, maybe you have other intentions?
Riku: And you’re just going to say it out loud?
Mao: Obviously. It’s for my birthday, right?
Riku: Ah, yeah. Saying it so bluntly like that is just so Mao.
Mao: I came here with that in mind anyway.
Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered to get you involved.
Plus, as Kyoya-san said, I know you don't like sweet things.
Riku: Well, you got me. Yes, I wanted to celebrate Mao’s birthday.
You heard me, it’s my treat. Feel free to order more.
Mao: Oh, really? Then I'll get another drink. There's a flavored tea I've been eyeing on.
Riku: Go ahead.
Riku-san called the waiter, looking like he had done this several times.
Kyoya: ……..
Mao: Is there anything wrong?
Kyoya: Not really? It’s just that you didn’t hesitate to take up on his offer at all. I thought maybe it was because it’s your birthday.
Being able to see that, I was mesmerized by your presence.
Mao: Haha, thank you.
I accepted his invitation, even though he’s not a big fan of sweets. I even took his words that I could order more.
Mao: (If he makes an effort to prepare something for my birthday, I want to fully appreciate his kindness.)
Without dismissing Kyoya-san's remark, I continued enjoying my birthday celebration.
Mao: (Oh, this one is pretty good.)
The afternoon tea was coming to an end. As I reached the finale, I finally found my favorite of the day. The jelly containing perfectly balanced fruits smelled like the perfect summer treat. I couldn’t bear to see it all go down my throat, so I slowly savored it little by little.
Part 3
Riku: (Oh, Mao's eyes are literally sparkling.)
(Fruit jelly, huh?)
Soyogu: ……………………Riku-san, you haven't made much progress, have you?
Riku: Like those two said, I'm not a big fan of sweets.
Well, I expected nothing less of Soyogu, what a big eater.
Soyogu: Sweet or spicy, I can devour them all.
Riku: How reliable. If I can't finish this, I'll ask you then.
Phew.
Soyogu: You’re doing good over there?
Riku: It's okay. I’m sure even this cake would love to get eaten deliciously.
As I shared my cake with him, I suddenly felt someone's gaze on me.
Mao: ……….
Riku: Anything you want?
Mao: Can I have some of the fruit jelly?
Riku: Sure thing.
(...I'm glad I saved it for the last.)
I intentionally left it so that I could give Mao what he wanted. If he hadn't asked, I would have kept it as a last treat. Thus, I gave the fruit jelly to Mao.
Mao: Thank you.
Soyogu: …For some reason, that's kinda surprising. I had the impression that you'd never touch other people's food.
Is this also part of your birthday celebration?
Mao: Huh?
……I wouldn’t say that.
Riku: Haha. Exactly, it was because it’s me, right?
The youngsters in the Simulation Dept. are pretty good at being spoiled after all.
Kyoya: I see. Now that I think about it, he speaks to Riku-san without any reservation. So that's how Riku-san is to Mao-kun.
Mao: Now that you mention it. I do use honorifics with Kyoya-san.
Kyoya: I'm jealous at how loved you are, Riku-san.
Riku: I almost ignored it when you said with such an innocent face, but that’s not a compliment, is it?
Soyogu: But I feel like there's a bit of an interesting personality gap here. Especially when I see Mao-san being spoiled by someone.
Mao: …..
Riku: (A gap, huh…..)
Mao today is the same Mao I know everyday, though.
Riku: (Cool and calm Mao is Mao, but this spoiled Mao is also just as Mao.)
From the back seat of a taxi, Soyogu bowed politely as we saw him off. After Kyoya got in the car, it's finally Mao's turn to go back.
Mao: Thank you for the meal today.
Riku: You're very welcome.
Here, happy birthday.
Saying this, I handed Mao the bag I had prepared.
Mao: Eh?
Riku: Oh? Isn’t this the accessory you said you were interested in? Did I get the wrong one?
Mao: No, you’re spot on. This brand is pretty pricey, isn’t it?
Riku: (...Is he acting hesitant now?)
Though a bit hesitant to reach for the bag, Mao quickly made up his mind and accepted it.
Mao: Oh well, it’s okay, I guess?
Riku: Hmm?
Mao: If it were anyone else, I would be taken aback and would have declined. But… This is from Riku-san, so I'm quite happy.
Riku: Ehhh, what's with that?
Riku: If you talk too much, I might fall in love with-.
Mao: No, thank you.
Riku: Ah, I see...
Mao's straightforward reply without a moment of hesitation. I couldn't help but let out a wry smile.
Riku: Well, that kind of thing is just so you, Mao.
Seeing me shrugging my shoulders, Mao chuckled softly. An evening breeze, like something that carried away the summer heat, blew through between us.

Roka’s special day
Part 1
———August 13th, night. Home for the first time in a while, I slammed open the living room door. The view opened up and bright light poured in.
Roka: Good evening! And you know what!? I'm home, Shino!
Shinobu: Welcome back, Roka-san
My housemate. A young man with a charming smile, none other than Aizawa Shinobu, welcomed me back.
Shinobu: You came back earlier than I expected.
Roka: Fufufu...!
Actually, I remembered an urgent matter and had to come back to Japan!
Shinobu: Does that have anything to do with how you’re feeling more excited than usual?
Roka: Yes! Absolutely!
Shinobu: Shall I guess?
Roka: Nope. I'll declare it for the whole world myself!
Roka: Tomorrow is my birthday!
Shinobu: Oh wow. Who would have thought~?
Shino applauded me with impressive clapping sounds.
Roka: It's no fun without the main character, right?
Shinobu: That's true for anyone. A birthday party without the main character just doesn’t feel real.
Roka: And I'm grateful for that!
But, now that I have an opportunity, I want to catch up with some acquaintances I haven't seen in a while.
Shinobu: Oh, Roka-san, you know tons of people, don't you?
Even someone that got me thinking “where did you meet anyway?” are friends with you. I'm amazed at how widely known you are, and I’m sure many people feel the same.
Roka: With that said, I'm planning a birthday tour over the course of a few days ☆
Shinobu: A birthday tour... That's pretty innovative, actually.
By the way, has the tour schedule been decided yet?
Roka: For the memorable first day of the tour, the first stop is Aporia.
After all, I want to see everyone on my birthday!
Shinobu: In that case, I'm on the cafe shift tomorrow. Shall we go together?
Roka: Wow! Ask and shall be given!
Now that’s decided, let's start the eve of tomorrow's main festival right now!
Shinobu: Of course I'll keep you company, but first, why don't you take a nice shower?
While Roka-san is soothing away the travel fatigue, I'll prepare some light snacks.
Roka: Oh! Let me take you up on that offer. Thank you.
Roka: (As the saying goes. Coming back is just as good as traveling. That just couldn’t be more true, is it?)
Leaving my luggage in the corner of the room, I headed to the bathroom in a relaxed mood.
Part 2
August 14th, the birthday— After greeting Rare-kun and Yappie in the office, I went to the cafe area, where Shino was working at the counter.
Roka: Mmm! This crème brûlée… The flavor and texture are exceptionally exquisite!
Shinobu: I'm glad you liked it.
Roka: Oh yeah!
Moreover, this dessert plate is filled with a truly impressive line-up of sweets.
Kou: Huh? Was that thing you’re eating even on the menu?
Shinobu: Yu-san prepared a special plate with a few extra items on top of the regular menu.
Kou: Ah, I see.
Roka: Fufufu…..
Well, let's ask the smart, perceptive Koutatsu! Do you know what day it is today?
Kou: It's Roka-san’s birthday, right?
Roka: Bingo, perfect answer!
I'm so happy I could cry. Even Koutatsu remembered mine.
Kou: I mean…. You’re pretty assertive on Chattas, who wouldn’t notice?
Roka: "Oh my! It's actually the birthday of that person I met today!?"
-- or something like that. I don't want my precious friend to have the awkward experience of finding out later.
Kou: “How you say is more important than what you say”. It's like those words were made just for Roka-san.
Roka: Aww, you're gonna make me blush if you praise me like that ☆
Kou: Yeah. Well, I have to head back soon.
I came over to pick up the plate, but it looks like you’re not done yet.
Roka: Since this plate is full of Yu-han love, it might take a little longer to finish than usual.
Kou: It’s not like I’m rushing you, so please take your time.
By the way, I have a present for you. Just let me know when you're leaving.
Happy Birthday.
Roka: ! Did you hear that!?
Shinobu: As expected of Kou-san, he kept up his smart demeanor throughout the whole event.
Roka: Koutasu, what a sinful man he is. Saying a congratulatory word and then leaving me hanging.
Well, now that I've been able to thank Yu-han for the birthday plate and shared my thoughts with him...
I think I'll head back to the office for now.
Shinobu: I hope you can meet Ai-san and Yuzuru-san.
Roka: If the information from Yappie is accurate, they should be back soon ☆
I'll be back here by the time Shino clocks out. Let us go home together!
Shinobu: All right. Take care.
I picked up my phone, which I'd put away while we were at the cafe, and found over 10 LIME notifications. Before I opened the app to check, another one had appeared.
Roka: (I know everyone is busy, but it's so nice to know that they remember me even though we're far apart.)
(Not to mention, I got to spend this day in my favorite place with the people I love.)
(It couldn't be any more wonderful.)
I poured my heart into each and every message and pressed the send button.
Part 3
After that, having been able to meet people from the Main Office no problem, Roka-san returned to the cafe in good spirits.
Shinobu: Roka-san, you’re jumping with joy. Like, literally. At first, I thought you’d actually skipped home like a rabbit.
Roka: Your assumption wasn’t that far from what I had in mind actually!
Mountain of sweets prepared by Yuzuru-san, the birthday flavored-tea brewed by Yashiro-san, Rare-kun’s song, Ai-san, who was taken aback at first but still went along with him――― Roka-san narrated each and every one of those events like they were his most precious treasure.
Roka: Hmm?
Shinobu: (Maybe it's another birthday message. It’s still ringing even on our way home.)
Don't mind me. It might be urgent.
Roka: Then, excuse me...
! It’s from Riku! He said “let’s invite Kiho and everyone else for a meal to celebrate your birthday.”
Shinobu: Oh, that sounds fun.
Roka: Yup! I need to send a thank-you message to Riku too.
Can I have a moment?
After hearing my reply of approval. Roka-san began typing on his phone.
Shinobu: (He looks really happy.)
Looking back, Roka-san seemed to be having a great time today. He made sure to celebrate his birthday whenever he met acquaintances. He even contacted people he hadn't met in person. Yet he didn't ask for anything. Just smiled and had fun.
Shinobu: (...Maybe Roka-san really does want someone to celebrate his birthday after all.)
(Of course he's happy when someone blesses him, he even makes himself known. But I don’t think that’s the main point here...)
Roka: Shiiiino!
Shinobu: Woah!
Sorry, I was spacing out... Have you been calling me?
Roka: Nope, only just now. It's only the first take, don't worry!
By the way, do you have any plans for tonight, Shino?
Shinobu: Me? Nothing in particular.
Roka: That's good to hear!
Since it's my birthday, I wanted to have a nice, long chat with Shino for the first time in a while. Therefore, the rest of my schedule has all been cleared just for you.
Shinobu: !
Shinobu: (………………I see. That's just the kind of person he is.)
For Roka-san, his birthday is merely an excuse. Perhaps it's more important for him to spend time with others than to be celebrated. Recalling his words and his actions today, that thought crossed my mind.
Roka: What do you say?
Shinobu: Of course. As the closing act for the first day of the tour, I'll do my best to accompany you.
Roka: Music to my ears! If you consider an encore, everything will be perfect. Just saying ☆
Shinobu: On the condition that you don't forget to keep it moderate, okay? But before that… Can I say something?
Roka: Hmm?
Shinobu: Happy birthday, Roka-san.
Roka: ………!
Thanks a lot, Shino.
A huge, gleeful smile. Those clear, unclouded eyes looked straight at me.

Riku’s special day
Part 1
Riku: … For the information I know, that should be all.
How's it? Does that clear the problem?
Ai: More than enough. Thank you.
Ai contacted me after I finished a counseling session somewhere else, saying he had something to discuss. He told me it could be the day after, but I ignored his remark and went straight to the office.
Ai: As always, you’re quick on your feet. I’m grateful for your help.
Riku: Hearing that, it was worth my time.
(Well, once Ai asks for my advice like that, there’s no way I could postpone it until tomorrow.)
Ai: By the way, Riku-san.
Riku: Wait!
From the tone of your voice, my guts told me it’s not going to be something nice….was it?
Ai: How you feel about it is up to you.
I heard that you once again behaved in a way that led someone you met for the first time to mistake your words for romantic love.
Riku: Can I beg to differ? Even if it is, I’m always serious about it.
I mean, who told you that anyway? I always tell those guys to keep it secret from Ai.
Ai: Here’s an easy solution if you know it would come back to bite you if you were to be found out, don't do it in the first place.
Riku: Woah, you’re really coming at me with a reasonable argument.
Ai: Private life is a matter of personal freedom, but please make sure it doesn't interfere with work…..
Well, I'm sure you know that even if I didn’t say it.
Riku: Okay, I'm sorry. I'll be careful next time.
Ai: Please do so.
Riku: Well, should I leave now?
Ai: …….Wait a moment.
Riku: Hmm?
Ai: Here.
Without any timidity, as if I was a mere business partner, Ai casually handed me something with one hand. Black base with a gold logo and decorations. A whiskey box.
Riku: Wow, isn't this a really nice one?
(Don’t tell me…...)
Ai: It's a birthday present.
Riku: (Figured as much.)
Thanks. Yeah, it’s my birthday after all.
(Knowing Ai... I bet he prepared it a few days in advance so he could give it to me when the timing was right.)
(How can I put it….. I can understand why people call him "Your Majesty.")
A master who loves and protects all the people in his territory, but not too excessively. I lost count how many times I found him cool in that aspect.
Riku: Hey, Ai. What are your plans after this?
Ai: ….Now that I've taken care of troublesome matters, I’m thinking of doing some miscellaneous tasks.
Riku: So you’re vacant tomorrow?
Ai: Yes, what do you want?
Riku: Would you like to drink this with me? I have a few snacks that go well with it. In fact, I had prepared them for a solo evening drink.
Ai: I thought you'd say that. Why don't you just drink by yourself like you planned then?
Riku: Ai.
Riku: Don't leave me alone to drink a birthday present from you.
Ai: Haaah….
Riku: Just sit wherever you want. I'll get everything ready in a flash.
Ai: ….Pardon my intrusion.
Part 2
Riku: (Despite his reaction earlier, he still came all the way to my house.)
(Ai really is Ai at the end of the day.)
Ai: Riku-san.
Riku: Hmm?
Ai: This also needs to be refrigerated, could you please?
While I was preparing drinks in the kitchen, I heard a voice and turned around to see Ai pointing to a bag from the deli cafe he’d stopped by on the way here.
Riku: Thanks. I'll plate it later. You see, isn't mood important in these situations?
--- Oh, that's right. I almost forgot about this.
While I was putting what he bought in, I grabbed some smoked salmon from the fridge.
Riku: (He thought this would be the perfect snack to go with the evening drinks, so he prepared it, huh….)
………..
Ai: ? What’s the matter?
Riku: Nothing?
Seeing Ai made me think of something…. and I opened the fridge again. Then, I thinly sliced the onion and made a marinade with olive oil and lemon juice before letting it combine with the salmon.
Ai: ……
Riku: I'll bring it right away, can you prepare the whiskey? The glass's over there.
Ai: Okay.
Riku: All right, here’s to the hard work.
Ai: If we're going to have a toast, it should be for your birthday.
After finishing his sentence, Ai modestly put his glass close to mine.
Ai: Happy birthday.
Riku: Yeah. Thanks.
Wow, it's really godsent!
The moment I took a sip, I was in awe of the unexpectedly high-quality flavor.
Ai: ...I'm glad you’re still safe and sound these past few years.
Riku: Is it just me or does that sound more like, “don’t get yourself in trouble” rather than “I wish you good health”?
Ai: If that’s what it sounds like to you, I don’t mind.
Riku: I'm sorry for making you worried these past year.
Ai: At least you are self-aware.
Riku: Haha, that's harsh.
By the way, how's Ai doing lately?
He sipped his whiskey with an unwavering expression. I did ask him that question but….
Riku: (Honestly, I don’t think he's worried about anything.)
Ai is a man with the qualities to stand at “that” level. I have no worries, rather, I'm proud of him.
Ai: What's with that question?
...If it's about work, there are no particular problems at present.
If anything happens, I'll contact you before it becomes a problem anyway.
Riku: Haha, it's an honor to hear that.
Ai's qualities are fundamentally different from "mine." They're not comparable, but those of his are not something I could ever imitate.
Riku: (But that's why I trust Ai. I know I can entrust Aporia to him.)
No matter how many times I witnessed those qualities, I just couldn’t be happier to be able to work alongside this man.
Part 3
Picking up the marinated salmon with his chopsticks, Riku-san smiled with satisfaction.
Riku: Yeah, it turned out pretty well even if I say so myself. Ai, you should try some.
Ai: Thank you for the meal.
The perfect balance of acidity and saltiness brought out the flavor of the ingredients and paired well with whiskey.
Ai: (He probably took my preference into consideration.)
Riku: How's it?
Ai: Very delicious.
But this event is for your birthday. Just eat whatever you like, regardless of my palate.
Riku: What are you talking about? I did eat whatever I liked. I made this simply because I thought it would taste good.
Ai: Is that so?
As always, he made people feel at ease and observed them carefully. That hasn't changed even when he’s doing business. He doesn't show the slightest hint of self-indulgence. He makes the right decisions when time required. That's not something to be taken for granted.
Riku: Would you like another drink?
Ai: Thank you, if you don’t mind.
Please have a drink too, Riku-san.
Riku: Ah, thanks.
Ai: ……..
Ai: ………………Riku-san. Thank you for today.
Riku: Hmm? I'm the one who should be thanking you.
Not only did you give me an amazing gift, you also joined me for a drink.
Thank you. I'm really grateful, Ai.
Riku-san’s virtues. Not just me, I was sure everyone in Aporia had been helped by him countless times. It’s not like I looked up to him or anything. In the first place, It's not something I can ever imitate.
Riku: Anyway, this salmon really hits the spot. If it catches my eyes again, I'll definitely buy it.
Ai. Come again next time, okay?
But it's precisely because he’s like this that I ended up wanting to celebrate his birthday.
A few days later.
Riku: Good work. Is Yuzuru here?
Ai: You may find him at the cafe.
Riku: Got it.
Ai: By the way, Riku-san
Riku: Hmm?
Ai: I have received yet another report regarding your unique behavior that could potentially lead to trouble.
Riku: What’s going on here? Again?
Ai: That's my line. As I've told you umpteen times, please do not let it interfere with work.
.....Well, I'm sure you have some self-awareness, do you?
Riku: I'll be careful, sir.
Ai: Please do so.
Riku: Well, I'll go check out the cafe now.
Leaving the office as usual. I watched his back as he left. —”What should I give him next year?” I know he’s the kind of person who keeps thinking about that, and always will.

Kyoya SSR
Kyoya’s special day
Part 1
Kyoya: (What a beautiful day.)
Gently, the sun was shining on the open terrace of the cafe where we were supposed to meet. After taking a sip from the cup in my hand, my glance landed on the clock.
Kou: Sorry to keep you waiting, Kyoya-kun.
Kyoya: Not at all. I just got here a little while ago.
Kou: Oh, that's good to hear. I almost fell back asleep, so I was a little flustered.
That being said, his usual cool face showed no sign of haste.
Kyoya: I mean, I can just pick you up when the time comes.
Kou: Come on now. At least, not today, right?
It's your birthday.
His modest way of speaking made me recall the time we made a promise. "Kyoya-kun, wanna go out for drinks some time soon?" The invitation began with those words and ended with "Let's celebrate your birthday". His sentences were the whole package.
Kou: So, about today’s plan…….
To be honest, aside from the bar I had in mind for tonight, the rest of the day is basically spontaneous.
Kyoya: Is that so?
Kou: I want to prioritize where you want to go.
But if you don't have anything in particular, I can come up with something real quick. What do you say?
Kyoya: (Ah, I see.)
Even if the situation called for no plan, I just know I could have a great time.
Kyoya: (That's Kou-kun for you.)
In that case, there's a store I've been eyeing on recently. There are other options as well, so let's just enjoy shopping like usual. Of course, I'll also listen to your wishes.
Kou: Sounds like a plan. So, the plan is I'll prioritize where you want to go, but we'll still have fun as usual.
Oh, but let me remind you that I already picked the bar I believed you would like.
Kyoya: I’m looking forward to that.
Kou: Hey, the jacket you just bought fit you so well I almost thought it was tailored specifically for you.
You looked good in it.
Kyoya: Thank you. I thought the same thing actually.
After visiting several interesting stores, enjoying finding some wonderful items, we strolled through the downtown area. As I wondered about our next destination.....
Kyoya: (A phone call?)
Excuse me.
Kou: Go ahead
Kyoya: ……
I saw the name on the screen and immediately put my phone away.
Kou: Hmm?
Part 2
Kou: Don't worry about me, just pick it up.
Kyoya: It’s okay, it’s just my brother.
Kou: Oh yeah? All the more reason to take it, isn’t it?
Kyoya: I have an idea what he’s going to talk about anyway.
Kou: What kind of idea was it that led you to think it’s okay not to pick up anyway?
Kyoya: I had my birthday party the other day, and my mom and brothers took countless photos with their smartphones and SLR camera.
And I’m pretty sure they were going to talk about sending me those photos.
Which I have no problem with, but knowing my brother, it’s not hard to imagine him wanting to hear the thoughts or sharing memories from the party.
Kou: Is that so?
Kyoya: It’s another matter if it’s about commemorative photos taken at a photo studio, but this year, we only did normal snapshots, so I think there's no reason to bring it up at this time.
Kou: You’re telling me it’s common to take commemorative photos at a photo studio on your birthday?
Kyoya: Not quite, I think.
Kou: That’s something you would hear from someone who views it as a normal occurrence.
Kyoya: It's not like it's an annual custom or anything. To put it simply, let’s see....
For example, my father and I have the same birth month.
When my father turned 60, the whole family got together to celebrate both of our special days and take some photos.
Kou: Really?
Kyoya: But like I said, this year, there’s no such thing as a formal photo.
Since he went out of his way to call me when a text alone could work, I’ll decide for myself when to pick up the call.
Kou-kun bursted out in laughter after hearing my declaration.
Kou: Somehow….
You remind me again that you really are the little brother.
Kyoya: You think so?
Just then, I spotted a crowd of people and my attention naturally turned in that direction. It seemed Kou-kun felt the same way.
Kou: An event to announce a new model of printed stickers booth, huh….
Kyoya: That seems to be the case. I've heard of it but I've never taken one before.
Kou: ………..
Event Staff: We also have a booth for men!
Kou: That's great. Kyoya-kun, now that we’re here, why don't we stop by?
Kyoya: Hmm?
Part 3
Kou: Happy Birthday.
Kyoya: Thank you.
To conclude the birthday celebration, I toasted with Kyoya-kun. Basically the only plan I had for him.
Kou: (It finally feels like a celebration.)
Kyoya: I really had a lot of fun today.
Kou: Come on, the real fun starts from here.
Kyoya: I know, I also plan to have lots of fun with you from here on out as well.
But I must say, you have given me a great time so far. I was able to go shopping with you and take some printed stickers together.
Kou: Well, yeah. I didn’t expect that one at all, but it was still a lot of fun.
Anyway, your pose back then was so perfect that it amazed me.
Kyoya: Oh my, did I just hear that from Kou-kun of all people?
I just copied what you did, though. Seeing someone as refined as you, how could I not want to imitate?
Kou: Today is your birthday, there’s no need to use me as a reference.
Oh, by the way, I had the stickers we took earlier. Do you want half of it?
Kyoya: Then, don’t mind if I do. To commemorate today.
Kou: Eh?
Upon hearing my voice that was let out unintentionally, Kyoya-kun tilted his head without saying anything.
Kou: Ah, it’s nothing. I know I asked if you wanted it, but I never thought you'd actually say yes.
(Not to mention, “to commemorate today”.... He’s not the type to say he wants what he doesn’t want….)
Kyoya: Should I have refused?
Kou: No way, take it. To commemorate today.
Kyoya: I'll treasure it.
Kou: (That sentence too…... Well, if he really had fun, then today was worth it.)
It's not the same celebration Kyoya-kun normally gets from his family. But that might be special in its own way. Judging from his reaction, that seemed to be the case… On the other hand, I also felt like this wasn't a "proper" suitable celebration.
Kou: I know it's a little late, but I'll say it anyway. Sorry for today.
Kyoya: Huh?
Kou: I mean… I just don’t think this kind of clumsy celebration, like having no plan or taking a photo for stickers, is something appropriate for you.
Maybe I should have done something like making a reservation at a nice restaurant or something.
I know what I should do. But I'm sorry that it ended up like this.
That being said, I didn't actually feel as sorry as my words suggested. In fact, I thought my words did a great job exuding a very gentle warmth. Kyoya-kun was silent for a moment after hearing what I said... Shortly after, he laughed.
Kyoya: I don't think your way of celebrating is inappropriate at all, not in the least.
You did what you could….. No, even if you didn't, I don't mind actually.
Kou: Huh?
Kyoya: Realistically speaking, there are people in the world whose birthdays you wouldn't want to celebrate with.
At least, to Kou-kun, I am someone worth celebrating. That's what I mean.
When he smiled directly at me, a flash of realization flicked in my mind for a moment.
Kou: (When he put it that way, it can't be helped, I guess...)
Surprisingly.... The fact that he’s willing to accept the printed stickers from me. The fact that we took a photo together in the first place. And even more so, the fact that he even agreed to today's plan, which was nothing but spontaneous.
Kou: (From the very beginning, Kyoya-kun has been sticking to his principle of "celebrating the birthday with me".)
This guy really was something... I thought to myself and smiled wryly.
Kyoya: How could I not like you when you’re like that, Kou-kun?
Kou: Suddenly acting like someone older, huh?
Kyoya: Should I remind you again that we’re two years apart?
Kou: But I’m catching up, you know?
Hearing my light-hearted response, the older guy whom I could never overwhelm smiled even more enjoyably.

Riku's Personal Story
Riku: …..Sorry to keep you waiting. I couldn't find my battery charger...
Kou: ……..
Riku: (Oh?)
A hot and humid Thursday night. When I returned to the living room with my cleaned camera and the case containing all the accessories… Kou-kun was waiting for me on the sofa with his head slightly hanging down, motionless.
Riku: ………………Kou-kun.
Kou: Huh? Oh, Riku-san. You got the camera you mentioned before?
Riku: Yup. Look. The one I taught you how to use a little while ago.
Kou: Ah, I see. You’re really helpful even though it was a sudden request. Thank you.
Riku: You're very welcome….. Hey, are you tired? I think I caught you taking a nap just now.
Kou: Oh, you saw that, huh….. I mean, anyone would feel sleepy when they entered an air-conditioned room after battling the scorching sun out there, no?
Riku: I know, I know. Be it day or night, when it's this hot, just being outside is exhausting. If you have time, why don't you cool off a bit more?
Shall I get you more tea?
Kou: Wow, so kind.
Riku: Feel like falling in love now?
Kou: I'll think about it.
Riku: A textbook response from an irresponsible guy, I see…..
I took a bottle of oolong tea out of the fridge and poured it into his glass.
Kou: Thanks. Actually, I have been meaning to mention this earlier, but I like this glass.
Riku: Same here. It's one half of the glass that Kiho and Kyoya gave me for my birthday this year.
Kou: Which means it has a pair, right?
Riku: You'd think so, wouldn’t you? Yes, there is another one from the same set. With a charming smile painted on his face, that guy told me he would give me the other half once I found a good partner.
Kou: Haha. Totally sounds like something Kiho-san would say.
After casually talking, Kou traced the vertical lines on the glass with his finger while gazing at it for a while. Shortly after, as if nothing had happened, he spoke up.
Kou: You can ignore me if you don’t want to hear this.
Riku: Hmm?
Kou: I've always wondered….. if Riku-san is the type of person who doesn't believe in finding a lover.
Riku: ……What made you think that?
Kou: I often hear your usual lines about falling in love, but I've never actually seen you have a lover.
It made me wonder if you were hiding someone, but that thought was debunked right away when I learned that even Kiho-san sensed that you really didn’t have anyone like that.
Riku: I see. An eternal unrequited love that comes with desire to have a relationship…. Is it your kindness to eliminate that kind of possibility for your clients?
Kou: If that's what you want to call it, then so be it. The thing is… I can’t really imagine someone not falling for you if you seriously buckle down and seduce with all your might.
Riku: Can I take that as a compliment?
Kou: Feel free.
Riku: Thank you.
Well, as a thank you for some nice words, I will answer honestly……. I'm not against it. When I have one, I just have.
Kou: Huh?
I couldn't help but laugh when Kou looked at me like he was caught off guard.
Riku: (...I'm sure he doesn't want this conversation to lead to "What about you?")
(That being the case, he was curious enough to want to confirm it with me. That’s probably why he blurted it out. I can feel that he really meant it when he said I could just ignore him.)
It hasn't happened in a while, but it’s pretty much now and then since Kou joined Aporia.
I just didn't say it because they tended to not last long.
Kou: It didn’t last long…? Are you the type to get passionate until your target falls in love with you and then break up once the honeymoon phase is over? Who’s the real irresponsible guy here?
Riku: Where did that god awful guy come from? Kick him back where he belongs, will ya?
To answer your question. Nope, not at all. Even after we started dating, my fire was still there. In fact, it was me who got dumped. Geez, don't make me say it.
Kou: I doubt.
Riku: Trust me on this one.
Riku: Kou, say…..... For example, if someone you're dating asked you to die together, how would you respond?
Kou: That escalated way too quickly.
Riku: It's just a “what if”.
Kou: For a situation like that?
Riku: I’m serious.
Kou: Well, I wouldn’t exactly say that’s an unusual situation. I think I hear that line about once a year.
Riku: Really?
Kou: In this line of work, yes.
If you ask me how I would respond… The only answer is to go along with your partner, right?
Riku: Go along, huh? A kind answer I would expect from you.
Kou: Oh, was I just complimented for being myself?
It’s just a response based on a partner's personality after considering how to respond in a way that will calm that person down. I mean, are there any other options?
Riku: For me, when something like that happens…..
Riku: ”'I'm happy to hear that…. because I want to die with you too. But there's no guarantee we'll be together even after death, so I'd prefer it to be as far into the future as possible.”
That’s something I would say.
Kou: As expected. A professional's response.
Riku: I've decided not to bring the knowledge and skills I've acquired at work into my personal life. Because it would seem like the boundary would disappear and people would no longer believe me.
Thus, those are words straight from my heart as an individual, not from me as a counselor.
Kou: ...Wow, you’re really convincing.
Riku: Hey, I really mean it. I definitely want to die together with my significant other.
Leaving someone behind or being left behind… Just thinking about it is unbearable.
If something happened to my partner first……. I think I definitely would go crazy.
Kou: …… Woah. That’s kinda not what I expected.
Riku: Haha. Did you find what I said heavy and scary?
Here's why.
???: "At first I was happy. But gradually, I started to feel uncomfortable."
"Every time you say 'I love you,' I feel like you're holding me back, preventing me from escaping."
???: -- "As long as you love me who loves you, that's all I need." Riku always says that, but I don't think that’s possible. I just know one day…. I'll seriously hurt you.
Riku: (.......Because if you ever do something to hurt me, you never know what I'll do to you….. Are you perhaps…scared?)
I didn't ask. I thought there was no point in asking. The eyes that had me reflected in them no longer looked like those that see loved ones anymore.
???: That’s why…. I'm sorry.
Riku: …..I see.
I want something small and ordinary, something that we only have, a place where we share our hearts and forgive each other. I don't want to hold you captive. I want to hold your hand. I just want to connect with you while hanging on the same strength. That's all I wish for….. But it still won't come true.
Riku: It’s not like I think I'm being too serious or extreme.
But I guess that's what makes it scary on its own.
Kou: ………………. I've never dated you before, so I don't know if you’re scary or not.
But if something happened that could be interpreted that way, it would be hurtful, as a matter of course.
Riku: Hurtful?
Kou: Isn't it sad when someone you love tells you that you’re scary?
I don't know what’s going on, but if I heard that even once, I would have a hard time for sure.
Riku: ……………….
Kou: ...Sorry. Did I say something bad?
Riku: No, as I was watching you, I could really understand why you're so popular. That’s all. Thank you for your input, Kou.
Kou: Haha. You're welcome. It’s not like I’m trying to give you lip-service here, I'm just saying that I'm intimidated by your strength.
Riku: My strong point is that I'm naturally easygoing and never distort from who I am.
…..To be attracted to each other and love one another more than anything in the world. Even as time passes, those feelings never fade.
Every day, every time I see my lover’s face, I feel like I was born to meet that person. That sort of relationship is what I have been aiming for.
That’s how I would describe my parents. At one point, I thought everyone would naturally end up like that sooner or later….. But I was wrong.
It was something truly special, and I only realized how amazing my parents were when I grew up.
Kou: …………….
"I think I get what you mean," Kou blurted out as if talking to himself. And I quietly answered “Yes, you do” in my mind.
Riku: Well, I never said I gave up, though.
Kou: …Eh?
Riku: There's a thick wall between liking someone and sharing love with them. As time passes, sometimes things just don’t work out, sometimes it hurts.
However, if I were to give up on it for those reasons, it’d be no different from leaving the person who loves me more than anything in the world all alone.
Kou: ………..
Riku: I won't give up on believing that someone is still out there, nor will I give up on taking that person's hand.
I still have to get another glass from those guys after all.
A drop of water fell from Kou’s glass as he silently listened to my words. He wiped it away with a smile, seemingly loosening up.
Kou: I'll buy one for you too, so let me know when you achieve that.
Riku: Oh my, am I hearing things? Ready to strip your wallet for something extravagant?
Kou: Say that to Kyoya-kun.
Riku: I'm afraid he'll give me something mindblowing that goes beyond extravagant. No, thank you.
Kou: Can’t deny that.
Kou shook his glass while laughing. I listened carefully to the soothing sound of the ice crackling. The cry of cicadas also entered my ears from a distance, sounding like they were clinging to summer.

Mao's Personal Story
What you can't see is what you can't see. Nothing more, nothing less.
Mayu: Mao. I quitted Aporia.
Mao: Come again? That's too sudden... Since when?
Mayu: Today.
Mao: Didn’t see that coming at all.
Mayu: I mentioned before the capable guy Rikkun called in to help Aporia get back on its feet, right? I heard he'll be joining you officially soon.
There will be some new faces as well, that’s why Kiho told me to take some time off. That’s when I asked if I could quit.
Oh, by the way. They seem to need a few more guys who can do character acting. If you know any good ones, remember to introduce them.
Mao: I'd actually prefer to be introduced to someone with those qualifications instead.
Well... As long as it’s not a sudden dismissal, that’s fine.
In fact, I was just about to say that we should take a long break if the store seems to be able to stay firm.
Mayu: Really?
Mao: Since the incident with Riri-san, you haven't had much time to rest, have you?
Mayu: Not really. Although compared to before, it was surely hectic.
Mao: Wow, you really said that. It’s not everyday I get to see you carrying a lot on your shoulders.
Mayu: …….
Mao: I didn't expect you to suddenly quit at all, but I'm glad you decided to leave for a while and have some time for yourself.
Mayu: ……….Yeah.
Anyway, you know how it went. I thought I'd take a break for a while and wander around.
I’m gonna try whatever pops up in my head in order.
Mao: You’re saying that now? You always do whatever you want anyway.
Mayu: Even if I am unsure, I know Mao will push me forward. If I don’t want to regret not doing something, I should just do what I want… That’s what you told me.
Mao: It's your life, Mayu. There's nothing else I can say other than that, just do what you want to do.
Mayu: Ahaha, that's true.
Thanks. Mao.
Mao: …………
Mayu: Well then, I'll come back when I feel like it.
……See ya.
The mug, the slippers she had taken off and were rolled aside, the cushions piled up in a strange shape…. Mayu left everything as it was and left. It was just another night, the "usual" nights that had passed countless times in the repetitive daily life, free from madness or disruption.
Mao: (.....Yuzuru?)
Kise: Good work! Sorry for bothering you on your day off, can I talk to you for a moment?
mA0: Good work to you too. What's wrong?
Kise: It's about the yukatas you ordered for Tomose and Yuragi the other day. Have they arrived yet?
Tomose is going to come during lunch the day after tomorrow, so I thought it would be a good time to let him try it on.
Mao: (Ahhh...)
I glanced at the cardboard box that arrived from my parents' house this morning, it remained unbothered at the entrance. After I told him I'd take it there, we talked a bit and I put my phone back on the table.
Mao: (The day after tomorrow, Yuragi will be there for work as well. Maybe I'll get him to cooperate too. Although I haven't decided on the sandals to go with those outfits yet, I want to see the length at least. I'll bring something that might work just for the fitting then.)
(Yuzuru’s size is the same as Tomose’s, so I’ll borrow those from him later, as for that guy..…. Will mine even fit him? His feet are surprisingly big.)
Mao: (Is it this box that contains what I bought last year?)
(Oh. Mayu's stuff? Then this one...)
Huh? Why are these heels in this box? These gotta be hers too...
In the neatly organized shoebox, I randomly picked out a box, and couldn’t help but sigh when I saw Mayu's personal belongings popping up one after another.
Mao: (For God’s sake…..)
She probably came to stay the night right after shopping and shoved her shoes in the shoebox, then put on new ones and left on the next day. These are what she called “stock” and of course, it didn’t limit to shoes, the closet on the second floor was literally no different. It’s not rocket science, she’s free-spirited though and through. Made me wonder if all sisters out there were like this.
Mao: (Once I return the yukata, I'll pack these things up and send them back to where they belong. There should be some space in the room, I don’t think I have to worry about where to put–....)
…………..
A thought flashed across my mind as I looked at the box in front of me, but I didn’t let it stop me.
Mao: (It's not like there's a lot to the point where her stuff is overflowing or anything. Just more work for me to collect Mayu's things from here and there and pack them up...)
But there's no reason to go beyond the effort. In that case, it's more efficient not to touch them. An everyday life liberated from unnecessary things, only what was deemed necessary and convenient was worth putting together. Life just went on smoothly in the end. Just as I reached the same conclusion as always, I put the lid back on Mayu's sneakers, which were neither to my taste nor the right size.
Mao: Good morning, Tomose. You're sure early today.
Tomose: And here I thought I was early. Did I keep you waiting?
Mao: I took a taxi and I left a little early today. The roads were clearer than I thought.
But I’m glad it turned out this way. Otherwise, I would have made you wait even though I called you so early in the morning.
Tomose: In the first place, it was me who specified morning instead of after work. Doesn’t it look more like I was the one calling you here?
Mao: Hey, I was the one who asked for your time to try on clothes. Yuzuru told me that you plan to leave at 3 PM today. You have something to do, right?
Tomose: Yeah. Yu is coming home.
Mao: Yu? That reminds me, I didn't see him yesterday. Is it work?
Tomose: Acting as a bodyguard from last night until 5 PM today. That's why I told him I'll be home from this evening onwards. Due to the nature of the job, he left all personal belongings behind this time.
Mao: All his personal belongings... Ah, I see. Since he doesn't have a key, he can't get in the house without Tomose, not to mention, no phone. Doesn’t that mean you can't contact him?
Tomose: Yeah. That’s why I'll wait for him to come home as promised.
Mao: ……………………Can I ask what goes on your mind at times like these?
Tomose: ?
Mao: When you’re waiting for Yu.
Tomose: ……. Is your question “am I worried or not”?
Mao: (….Ah.)
Sorry. Thinking about it, I shouldn't have asked that when Yu is still away.
I tried to take it back by saying "forget it," but Tomose beat me to it.
Tomose: Right now, no. But… That used to be the case.
Mao: (Used to...?)
Tomose: I admit that I used to doubt his words when he said that there wasn’t any problem and he would come back after finishing the task safely.
Once I send him off, there is only one thing I can and should do
Mao: ... Believe that he will be safe and wait for him to come back. Nothing else, right?
Tomose: Yes.
Mao: That sounds just like you.
Tomose: Beside.
If I feel even the slightest bit of possibility that he won't be able to return safely, I will not let him go alone.
Mao: ………
The words came out of Tomose as he continued his sentence like it’s nothing…. made my thoughts frozen for a moment.
Tomose: Either stop him or accompany him. Even if I end up not being needed, it's fine as long as everything goes smoothly.
Mao: ………………. Right.
I agree.
Tomose: …..I see.
Mao: Thanks for going along with my ridiculous question out of the blue. Shall we get started?
This is your yukata. Have you ever worn one?
Tomose: No. Let me know if you need me to wear one myself.
Mao: I'll have to help Yuragi dress anyway, you can just leave it to me. But it's not that difficult, so how about learning it?
Tomose: Sure.
Mao: First, put this on over your underwear... But, before that, why don’t you bring your work clothes from the locker?
Just put that on after taking off your yukata. It’s gonna be a hassle to change back and forth.
Tomose: Sounds like a plan.
Tomose gave me a brief reply and left down the hallway.
The sound of the door, which hadn't been slammed roughly, echoed loudly for some reason. Before it disappeared after intertwining with the sounds of that night that still lingered in the back of my ears.

Chapter 10
Raito: Sorry, was I too early?
Riku: Nope. No problem at all.
Seems like it’s not a marriage vow that you’re planning to do.
Riku-san was the only one who didn't seem surprised as he called out to Amakawa-san.
Raito: Yes. This is a "vow to be happy".
Yuragi: Alone?
Raito: Yes.
These past few days, talking with you all really helped me face my own happiness.
I could realistically imagine various scenarios with her, like becoming a family as husband and wife, or becoming a family as siblings.
The life full of warmth that I truly desire. Whenever that picture came to mind, I felt immense happiness…..
At the same time, I could see the cracks that would occur further ahead.
Amakawa-san lowered his eyes, a shadow fell on his cheek.
Raito: No matter how much we try to get around it, there's no way we can become a normal sister and brother now.
That being said, we can’t be in a lifelong loving relationship without ever having any doubts.
Yuragi: ...Did she agree?
Raito: Yes. That's why I came here alone.
We decided to part ways. But it's not because I think about the world or because I'm scared of our future together.
To find out what other options there are for me and her to be happy without being tied down by the world or each other… That’s the reason.
Riku: So, you've decided to look for a new form of happiness.
Raito: Yes. I'm still not sure if this is the path that will lead to happiness… But deep down, there’s an excitement of what to come. It's all thanks to everyone.
Amakawa-san looked around at us.
Riku-san nodded slightly and urged him towards the altar.
Riku: To whom should you make the "vow to be happy"?
Raito: Then…... To the Goddess of June Bride.
Amakawa-san's expression as he gazed at the altar in the chapel couldn't be any clearer. As he was making a vow to be happy in front of the altar, his gaze went straight ahead to the other side of the stained glass.
Ito: (I wonder if he can see something beyond that.)
(.....Maybe not. I don’t think he can't see anything right now.)
Raito: …….
What he envisioned was probably standing here with his significant other as a groom. But, standing here at the moment was a man, just a man who decided to search for his own happiness.
Raito: I'm going to search for my own happy ending.
After making his vow, Amakawa-san appeared to be savoring his new feelings. That’s when Riku-san approached him.
Riku: I know you can do it. Be happy.
Raito: …….Yes, I will. Thank you.
Tears silently leaked from his eye smile.
Yuragi: …..
Yuragi-kun stared intently at Amakawa-san's face, witnessing big brother's determination as a "younger brother".
Tomose: Is our job done?
Yuragi: I don't really feel that way, though.
RIku: Well, can’t blame you for feeling that way. But I think you fulfilled the role of being allies to his choice just fine.
The blessing just now…. I think we were able to give it to him properly, although it might not be something that takes effect immediately.
Ito: ...That's right. Amakawa-san's choice may not be a choice that makes him happy now, but we can only hope it will be something that makes him happy in the future.
Riku: ...Yeah. That's true.
Yuragi, thank you for your hard work.
Riku-san gently patted his head, Yuragi-kun narrowed his eyes and smiled in a good mood.
Yuragi: Keep going.
Riku: Oh, you’re in a spoiled phase now?
Yuragi: If you gonna run your mouth, zip it. I’ll just stick to Ito.
Riku: Oh dear. It only lasts for a moment.
What about Tomose?
Yuragi: Tomose is fine too.
Tomose: Why do you need a head pat anyway?
Riku: Yuragi, just bear with me.
Yuragi: ……Haahh.
Despite the sigh, Yuragi-kun closed his eyes happily and comfortably as Riku-san stroked his head.
Riku: You sure you don’t have anything to say to Amakawa-san?
Yuragi: ……
Yuragi: Raito always said that he wanted a family, and he finally had someone who could have become his real family, his sister.
But it's not easy to live as if what they had before never existed, and I'm sure he’ll continue to have hard times.
….."Even so, you can still be happy". Riku already told him what I wanted to say.
With his nod, Yuragi-kun tried to reassure Riku-san that he’s really fine.
Tomose: ……………You can never make something that exists "not exist".
As long as you are alive, the possibility that two lives will cross paths again somewhere, even if you don't want to, will never be zero.
In other words, there’s a possibility that both of them will meet again in another form in the future. Whether it’s intentional or not.
If such a coincidence is called fate, there is definitely a future where the two of them become a family again….. or at least, a future where they gain happiness in a different way.
Rika: That's nice.
Yuragi: Blessing proxy..... It's quite a puzzling request.
Just what is happiness?
Riku: Happiness…..
I guess it's not that different from what is around you, Yuragi.
Yuragi: …I see.
After Yuragi-kun nodded slightly, I could see a faintly glowing stained glass beyond him. He who had no idea about the form of happiness called “family” probably wouldn’t change. But perhaps…. He had his own kind of happiness.
Ito: (May the happiness come to those who desire it… Is it too greedy to wish for that?)
Still, I couldn't help but wish for that in the faint moonlight shining through the stained glass.
Riku: Well, shall we head home?
Tomose: We didn't need these flowers after all. What should I do with it?
Onda-san pointed to the bouquet as he spoke.
Ito: Ah, you have a point.
Tomose: I don't need it, but as you can see, these flowers are still blooming beautifully. It’s a shame to throw them away like this.
Riku: I don’t mind taking them.
Ito: Sure.
Riku: I'll be sure to display these with care.
As we left the chapel, the soft night breeze blew through.
Riku: …..
Riku-san held up the bouquet filled with flowers as if offering it to the moon. The petals swayed uneasily as the wind caressed them. But instead of scattering, they were lit up by the moonlight. A faint glow that seemed to last forever.

Chapter 9
The day of the event was sunny right from the morning. As soon as the store opened, it was full in a second. The dining hall we’re in charge of was hectic, but all the crews were serving the customers in calm manners.
Akehoshi: Did you just have your wedding last week? Congratulations!
Woman: Thank you.
Akehoshi: No wonder you were giving off such a happy aura. Your surroundings are literally so sparkly.
Man: !?
Akehoshi: Woah, sorry. Was I too close?
Man: Ahaha….
…..Ugh, my heart feels a bit funny.
Woman: Hey, are you cheating on me~!?
Old lady: Excuse me, can I ask you something?
Yuragi: ?
Old lady: I don't really understand the menu. Can you recommend something?
Yuragi: Then, I would say cherry dessert plate. It has cherry jelly, cherry tart, and cherry sorbet, so you can enjoy a little bit of everything.
Everything is delicious, definitely worth trying.
Old Lady: Oh, nice. Shall we have that?
Old Gentleman: Yeah. As for a drink...
Yuragi: Cherry tea is also recommended.
Old Gentleman: Everything’s cherry…... Yeah, let's have that.
Yuragi: Okay. Look forward to it.
Mao: Cherry parfait and hot cocoa set, right?
Girl: Wait! Maybe I should get a tart after all. No, a fruit sandwich does sound nice too…...
Mother: How about I order a tart and Dad order a fruit sandwich? That way you can have a little of either.
Girl: Yay! I'll do that!
Father: Sorry for the noise. This is the first time we’ve brought her to such a gorgeous cafe.
Mao: It’s okay, I can see that you all are very close.
If you like, how about I take some photos of you and the stained glass later?
Ito: Two plates and one tart for table E, please.
Yuzuru: Got it.
Tomose: Make sure you finish touching up the plates for table A.
Yuzuru: I’m done with the tart and fruit sandwich for Table B.
Riku: I'll bring them.
Onda-san quickly decorated the pure white plates with colorful cherries and desserts. Behind him, Kise-san was preparing orders with such speed that made me wonder how many eyes and hands he had.
Akehoshi: Welcome.
Afterwards, the customers continued to flow in and the hall was filled with happy smiles, fitting for the June Bride theme.
Mao: Can I take out the trash now?
Ito: Yes, please do so.
Akehoshi: I'm pretty much done for the day now, let me help.
Mao: Sure, it seems like you still have some business left here. I guess that’s our cue to leave.
Akehoshi: Good luck with the rest.
Ito: Thank you.
Yuzuru: Oh, Tomose. Here you go.
Kise-san handed the bouquet that was used as venue decoration to Onda-san.
Yuzuru: I feel bad that we have to reuse the bouquet, but just in case that he needs it.
Tomose: Okay.
Yuzuru: Good luck.
And so, only the members in charge of the "blessing proxy" and I, who knew the situation, were left in the chapel.
Ito: If he wants to use the chapel to make the vows, the first thing that comes to my mind is that he wants to have a simple wedding ceremony.... But is that it?
Riku: I wonder. It seems that even Tomose doesn't know the details.
Yuragi: ….
Tomose: It's almost time. I'll go and pick-
Raito: ……
Yuragi: Ah….
The door to the chapel opened, revealing Amakawa-san…. and no one else.
Ito: (……………Just him?)
Yuragi: Eh?

Chapter 8
If someone asks whether I have "it" or not, yes, I do have “it” in me…. At least, I did. But I'm not interested in what form it takes for other people, and the world's correct answers have no meaning to me. I just consider what is necessary to make "this client's" wish come true.
Tomose: (Phone call... Riku?)
Riku: [Sorry, are you still awake?]
Tomose: Yeah.
Riku: [That’s great. It's about the blessing proxy.]
Tomose: I've heard that the client will come tomorrow after the event venue is prepared and we'll talk there.
Riku: [That's right. That's why I want to talk a bit with you before I pass the baton."]
Tomose: I’ve already read the report, is that not enough?
Riku: [Not the point here. By the way, how do you plan to handle this?]
Tomose: First, I plan to work out what I can do in order to become an "ally."
Then, I will listen to his specific request and respond accordingly.
Riku: [Haha, yeah. That’s great. Sounds like something you would do.]
[I didn’t ask you to join in because you’re the only one available. It’s precisely because you are you, Tomose.]
Tomose: ………..
Riku: As expected, Tomose is really reliable. But there's actually more to it than that.
Tomose: (I see. This call is to confirm whether I'll act according to what Riku said about "the reason why I was chosen")
(It was also his decision that it was my turn at this point.)
Not that it will make a big difference anyway. I'll just do what I have to.
..…That should be all.
Riku: [Hey. Actually, I have one more request. Tomorrow, If Amakawa-san----]
Tomose: Okay. I'll do that.
I nodded and hung up the phone. The smell of rain coming from the open window…. I looked up at the sky through the gap of the curtains.
Tomose: I'm Onda, and I will be your blessing proxy this time.
Raito: I’ll be in your care.
Tomose: The contents of this request is “being an ally”, right? Let me get straight to the point and ask you what you really want.
After this request is fulfilled, have you solidified the plan for your next move?
Raito: Solidify the plan?
Uh, well... Before we get to that, I decided to choose the option that would make me happy.
But I'm still not quite sure which path to choose...
Tomose: Okay. So you need help deciding that. What are your options at the moment?
Raito: Become a family with her as siblings, or hide it from the world and become a family as a husband and a wife...
Two choices…….
Tomose: ……
Now, for each option, I will list "what I can do as an ally".
Taking that into consideration, choose the one you think is best.
Perhaps my words were unexpected, the client was at a loss for words. I waited for a bit, but silence still took over, so I roughly listed out the options.
Tomose: First option, if you choose to live as siblings.
This might require a reset of your current relationships. If you want to live in the countryside or abroad, you will probably have to find a suitable land or property that is free from any ties you previously had.
In that case, I can handle the request to ensure that no one can trace your place of residence or past relationship.
Second option, if you live as a married couple.
Given that your blood-related relationship is not currently written in the family register, it would be better to change the environment than to go back to being siblings.
However, at that point, all routes that could lead to the disclosure of the truth behind your relationship should be eliminated.
I think dealing with this and any unforeseen circumstances like leaked information is also a role of an ally.
Raito: ………fft.
Tomose: If the time comes when force is required, I'll handle it. If it's a matter of discussion, please contact Aporia again.
What you hope to-.....
Raito: …pfft.
In the middle of my demonstration, the client suddenly let out a smile.
Tomose: What's wrong?
Raito: Sorry. I just thought, “ah, I see.”
Um…. Can I ask you something? Onda-san, if you were in the same position, which choice do you think would make you happy?
He asked with a slightly refreshed expression. From the way he relaxed, I could grasp that his words were from a different emotional state than before. Then, I began to speak.
Tomose: I don't think "whether I can be happy" is decided by this one choice.
Raito: ……
Tomose: If there is an option that I think would make me happy, I will choose that.
If there was nothing that I deem suitable among those, then my approach would be to choose the choice that will broaden the range of options I can choose next.
Raito: In the end, doesn't that just postpone the problem?
Tomose: That sounds much better than making a hasty decision that could lead to something fatal.
"Instead of deciding between these two options, look for an option that will make you happy." Such a third option can also exist. That's all.
Raito: ……
Looking for an option that will make you happy… A third option, huh…..
...How can I put it….. If this was a fairytale, would it have been easier?
Tomose: What are you talking about?
Raito: Well…. In a fairytale, happiness will come if you follow a theory to an extent.
Just by sticking to your feelings of love for the person you hold dear, you will eventually reach a happy ending.
Tomose: Indeed, there is no such thing as a process to predetermined results.
Reality is full of irreparable mistakes and unexpected suffering.
Tomose: …….Be that as it may, a happy ending does exist.
Raito: !
At that moment, I could see his back straighten. Those are the eyes of a man who had made up his mind.
Raito: …..No matter what choice I make, you will give me a blessing, right?
Tomose: Yeah. As per request.
Raito: I want to make a vow. Could I borrow this chapel for that?
Tomose: ……
Riku: [Tomorrow, If Amakawa-san----]
[Ask to borrow the chapel, tell him that it’s okay. I've already discussed it with everyone.]
Tomose: Okay. If you can wait until after the event, I'll make the arrangements.

Chapter 7
Of course I know that "it" comes in many different forms. And that there is no single form that is the same, be it among my clients or those close to me. That being said, I have definitely been blessed. I can accept the idea that "family is happiness" with no hard feelings. That's why I'm aware of my good fortune, never forget it for a moment, and cherish it more than anything else…..
Riku: (Maybe I am a bit behind schedule.)
In the evening, after finishing a session with a client, I headed to the venue for the dress-up event. The preparations were well underway.
Riku: Sorry, I'm late. Is Yuragi here?
Yuzuru: He’s in the back preparing the set-up.
Riku: Thank you.
Riku: Yuragi, good work. Can I have a little time when you're done?
Yuragi: What?
Riku: About the blessing proxy.
Yuragi: ………………Okay.
Riku: How was the “younger brother” job with Amakawa-san the other day?
Yuragi: You've read the report, haven't you?
Riku: Well, that's true….
I noticed that Yuragi seemed a little uncomfortable with this job. But I still let him go because he was the essential part for this blessing proxy.
Riku: (I hope I didn’t end up forcing him… But it's too late now to say that.)
Here. I got some macarons with me.
Yuragi: !
Ask me anything.
Riku: Man, was that easy.
Yuragi: But it's just as the report says. All we did was talk and laze around.
I told him what I thought I should tell him as his "younger brother".
Riku: I see.
Yuragi: I'm not sure if that was the right thing, though
Riku: Like I said. It's not a request with an absolute right or wrong answer.
In that case, if Amakawa-san's only "younger brother" felt that he had to say it, I think that's also the correct answer.
Yuragi: Then, it should be fine.
Riku: (Things that he thought he should tell, huh….)
Finding a cloud that looks like cotton candy. Reminiscing on a bench. The report detailed all of that, but I felt relieved to hear the words I wanted to hear the most directly.
Riku: (Well then, it's my turn next.)
Okay. Thank you. Also, one last thing……
Yuragi: ……
Riku: The weather is nice and the breeze is pleasant. It really was a good idea to sit on the terrace.
Raito: R-Right.
I contacted Amakawa-san and made an appointment. The man in question nodded timidly to my remark. In the afternoon cafe terrace, there were hardly any people except for us.
Riku: I wanted to come here, you see….. It barely has people and is very comfortable.
Raito: Yes…..
Riku: Are you nervous?
Raito: Ah, yes. A little.
Riku: Oh yeah. I know it's a bit selfish of me to say this..… But please take it easy.
Today I'm acting as your blessing proxy, and I'll be speaking as your absolute ally.
Raito: Thank you. Well, I really have been relying on Yura a lot.
Riku: How was it the other day?
Raito: …Thanks to that, I feel like I'm slowly getting my feelings in order. Thanks to Yura for listening to me.
Riku: Is that so? I'm glad to hear that.
Raito: He really is reliable..…
Not long after he muttered to himself, the silence fell upon us. As I waited quietly for him to speak….. His gaze wandered and began to follow a family walking down the street.
Raito: I wonder if I can become like that someday….....
Riku: (I guess he wasn't asking for an answer.)
Family looked dazzling from the outside, and he hoped to become like them. The connection between “family” and “happiness” inside of him was once again reflected.
Riku: ……..I heard that you discussed with Yura about “what you want to do right now” a few days ago.
Raito: Yes. I realized once again that I still can't give up on becoming a family with her.
But………
………….
Riku: I see. Amakawa-san and I are somehow similar.
Raito: Eh?
Riku: "Even if we don't have a visible connection, even if we're not together all the time, our hearts are connected."
There are many stories that indicate such a statement, and I have no objection to calling it a happy ending...
But if possible, I would like to be connected to my loved one in a visible way.
Raito: ! Yes... Yes, that's right...!
Riku: Still…..
You can't shake the feeling of rejection that it's unethical for siblings to become husband and wife, can you?
Amakawa-san looked at me, a bit startled.
Raito: ….Haha. I’m well-aware. I have to be prepared, right?
Riku: No, that’s not what I’m talking about. Ethics and laws are not something that can be shaken by emotions, that’s why they are what they are.
I think it's natural to have conflicts.
His neat and tidy attire and mannerisms, not to mention, the way he speaks revealed his earnest personality.
Riku: Perhaps what's bothering Amakawa-san is not only the "inability to choose" but also "what comes after the decision".
Raito: !
…..You got me there. That's probably it. I keep thinking about it, even though I keep saying I won't give up.
With my real sister, in this form….… I wonder if having a "family" that could fall apart at any time is what we both want.
Riku: (That being said, going back to being just brother and sister is probably not an option for Amakawa-san.)
(Even if they become a family as siblings, the way they love each other isn’t like that.)
That must have been bothering Amakawa-san for a long time…...
If so, how about this way of thinking?
You don't have to choose between the two options right now.
Raito: I don't have to...?
Riku: Yes. If the happiness you envision won't come true, you don't have to decide while being restricted to those two choices right now.
Raito: But…..
After saying that, Amakawa-san lowered his gaze as if he was deep in thought. This time, his eyes roamed over the table and landed on the menu.
Riku: Would you like one more drink?
Raito: Um, well….
Riku: If you're still hungry, how about we order something to eat?
Raito: Eh? Sure……
Soon, coffee and cheesecake for two were brought out.
Riku: (Just as I had heard, it was quite sweet. As expected from the fresh cream...)
Look pretty tasty, don’t they? Let's have some right away.
Raito: Yes... Let’s….
Though still confused, Amakawa-san took the cheesecake to his mouth.
Raito: ……
Albeit a little unsatisfied, he took a bite, then another. After a while, his hand finally stopped.
Raito: ………………………………Why is it so delicious?
It's not a question, more like a monologue to himself. And I took in his words.
Raito: Actually, I've been to this place with Yura a few times.
Riku: I see.
I had asked Yuragi beforehand and found out that this cafe was Amakawa-san's favorite. The combination he usually orders is cheesecake & coffee.
Raito: I was completely crushed by anxiety….. Yet…. It’s still delicious… Just like before I found out the truth….
A mix of shock and relief……. I could feel those complicated feelings from him.
Riku: It's strange, isn't it? People can take in more than they think and obtain happiness as it is.
With such small but solid continuity, you can create happiness in life…. is what I think.
………………Amakawa-san. You can choose the form of happiness you truly desire.
We swear to congratulate you on that choice.
Raito: Yes….Thank you.
The shape of happiness, huh…………..
….Just what is happiness?
Riku: ……..
Happiness is……

Chapter 6
“That thing” he spoke of and “what inside of me” are completely different in shape. His dream is to have a family, and every time he sees the joy of someone achieving that, a sense of discomfort grows inside of him… or so he said. ...Can I really act as a proxy for someone's blessing?
Yuragi: (Here we go again, my brain.)
My head is all fuzzy and spinning.
Yuragi: (Come to think of it, I've been busy and haven't played with any of the cats at all.)
The root of this anxiety must be a serious lack of cats.
Yuragi: Ah.
Tomose: Kanno?
Yuragi: That's unusual. Is Tomose also looking for a cat?
Tomose: I just had some business with Kamiya. I'm on my way home right now.
Yuragi: I see.
Hey, are you busy after this?
Tomose: No. What’s the matter?
Yuragi: I still haven't forgiven you for being a dog person.
Tomose: Before you get to that, I don't intend to belong to any category.
Yuragi: I'm going to teach you how wonderful the cats are. Follow me.
Tomose: ……
Yuragi: This is Nako, and next to it is Niko. The one showing belly is Nuko. The one who seems to want Tomose to play with it is Noko.
Tomose: What about Neko?
Yuragi: ? They are all cats (neko) here.
Tomose: I see.
I brought Tomose to the meeting place of many friendly cats. I thought he would say “sit” like the one used for dogs after the cats gather around us, and this wouldn’t work.
Yuragi: (But that was a really gentle touch.)
Tomose: Is Kanno always looking for cats at this time?
Yuragi: Not always. I came out today because I was feeling frustrated by the lack of cats.
But it doesn’t help at all.
Tomose: Which means it’s not the reason.
Yuragi: Seems so.
Yuragi: ...It’s a good thing you’re here right now. Tell me, Tomose. What is a family?
Tomose: Are you sure I’m the right person to answer that question?
Yuragi: Do you see anyone else here?
Tomose: …..I think it depends on the person.
Yuragi: Then let me change the question.
Yuragi: Is family "happiness" to Tomose?
At that moment, the wind blew. A certain cat ran through between us. The size was larger than the rest. She stood in front of Tomose as if to protect the four cats. Tomose turned his gaze to the cats and began to speak.
Tomose: I guess so. I don't think you're off the mark.
Yuragi: !
(Even Tomose gets it.)
The "family" and "happiness" that I didn’t understand. The connection that I couldn't see.
Tomose: Going back to answer your first question…. Of course, not everyone believes that "family" is where happiness is.
Furthermore, even if there is happiness in a family, it isn't necessarily limited to "only the family."
Yuragi: Tomose, it's getting difficult.
Tomose: Shall I break it down a bit more?
Yuragi: I’m good.... It doesn't seem like the way of explaining matters here.
Tomose: I see.
After that, there was a moment of silence. The big cat, who had been on guard earlier, finally realized that Tomose was no threat. She fed the four cats the food she had brought and they meowed to each other. The sight of them huddled together was burned into my memory.
Tomose: Is this their mother?
Yuragi: Y-Yeah.
Tomose: Na, Ni, Nu, No. All that’s left is Neko. Is that her name?
Yuragi: ………………Even Tomose knows how make a joke, huh…..
In the end, I didn't understand. Not in the least, still……. I felt like I knew what to do. Because I'm the younger brother.
Raito: Sorry for taking your time.
Yuragi: No, it's okay.
A three-seater bench. Raito quickly brushed away the sand that had been on the spot where I was about to sit. I sat on the edge and Raito sat next to me with a little more space between us than usual.
Raito: …………………I told her about what happened the other day.
Obviously, she was very shocked, and even after talking about it, we couldn't come up with an answer.
Yuragi: I see.
Then, today…. Shall we have a meeting to think together about what you want to do?
Raito: Sounds like a plan. A thinking session.
Yuragi: Yeah.
………….
……..Nothing came up.
Raito: Haha. Figured as much....
“What does he want to do?” That question remained as the two of us were staring blankly at the sky. Clouds like cotton candy were floating by.
Yuragi: Big bro.
Raito: …Hmm?
Yuragi: I want to drink something.
Raito: Eh?
Yuragi: I saw it on the instegram the other day, the one with cotton candy in it.
Raito: Haha. I don’t think you can find that around here.
But if you really want to drink it, shall we stop the thinking session today?
Yuragi: No. This is also part of the thinking session. I was thinking about "what I want to do at this very moment."
Raito: ………….
Yuragi: I thought it might be easier to find the answer by starting with small things.
Raito: …….That's true. Then, I want to go cycling.
Yuragi: We did that before. It was tiring.
Raito: Haha. But it was also fun. I want to do it again.
We also went cherry blossom viewing back then.
Yuragi: Yeah. We also ate the lunchboxes.
Raito: I wouldn’t say that. All you ate were sweets.
He gestured to show the amount I had consumed. Raito finally looked happy for once.
Yuragi: (Good.)
Then, Raito kept talking. Like how nervous he was when he had to watch over me while he was riding a bike or how it’s like going cherry blossom viewing with family. I responded attentively. ……..We both knew. That this was just a game of pretend. Still, at this moment…… As if we knew what it meant to be a "family," we talked about our memories as brothers. My “brother” looked much more worn out than he was a few days ago… And I knew just the words I had to say.
Yuragi: (I’m sure… I need to say this one thing.)
Raito: Looking back, I've dragged you around a lot, haven't I?
I'm really happy that Yura has been following me around like a real brother.
Yuragi: Yeah.
Raito: ………..I can't give up on family after all. That’s the kind of future I want.
Yuragi: I see.
Raito: Even if we can't have children, even if we don't get our marriage registered.
There's a way to live as a married couple just between the two of us. If that's how it goes...
Yuragi: ……….
Raito: I want to choose the form of happiness I truly desire….. or so I thought.
Yuragi: Is that what you want to do now?
Raito: …..I guess so. Feeling wise, yes.
Yuragi: ……Hey. Can we sit next to each other like always? This gap is a little lonely.
Raito: Ah, sure. Of course.
It might have been a little awkward after he’s aware that I knew the truth. I shortened the distance and rested my head on his shoulder.
Yuragi: I want you to be happy. No matter what you choose.
Because I'm your younger brother….. I'll pray for your happiness.
Raito: …………
…….Thank you, Yura.
My "big brother" opened his eyes wide, followed by a smile. His expression was a little awkward, but I hoped my answer as the "younger brother" was correct.

Chapter 5
The night after Amakawa-san returned home. Yuragi-kun, who had returned from a proxy request, and Onda-san, who spared me some time to talk about what happened in the evening, gathered in the office.
Yuragi: Siblings……….. I see.
So, what exactly does a "blessing proxy" do?
Riku: If those two decide to become a married couple, we congratulate them.
And if they decide to live as a family of sister and brother, we send them off by celebrating their new lives.
These were the two options that Amakawa-san himself said he had to choose
Yuragi: Simply put?
Riku: "We will be on your side and give blessings to you on behalf of the world".
No matter what the decision is.
Ito: (...Hearing it again, the fate is really cruel.)
Hiding the fact that you're siblings from the world and becoming a family as "lifelong partners"..... Or letting go of your feelings up until this point and becoming a family as siblings.
Ito: (Either of those is what he desires, but only one of those choices will give Amakawa-san the "happiness" that he thinks of...)
Riku: If we’re talking about a concrete move, it’s more like we will be the ones he can talk to until he makes a decision. That’s what we talked about on his way home.
Also, he specifically wants to ask Yuragi to join as well if possible.
I've talked to Ai and Kou about it. Although Kou didn’t know the details, he said that as long as it's not something Yuragi didn't want to do, he’s fine with it.
Yuragi: ……
Riku: You can refuse. I told Amakawa-san that I'd respect your decision, and he agreed.
Yuragu: Raito asked me to be the proxy for the blessing, right?
……………………
I'll do it.
Riku: Okay. Got it.
Moving on, I want Tomose to join in as well.
Tomose: You said that my job would be done after I report to the Main Office, right?
Riku: Yup.
Tomose: Then I don't mind.
Riku: Oh. That was fast. Any questions? You’re not going to ask why I picked you?
Tomose: No. In the first place, it's more favorable if fewer people know about this situation. It would be more convenient for those who are already aware of the situation to fulfill this request.
I just move in accordance with the request I accepted.
Riku: As expected, Tomose is really reliable. But there's actually more to it than that.
Yuragi: If it's something that should be sealed tight in the mouth, why me? Because I was acting as his brother?
Riku: Yeah... As for Yuragi….. Only Amakawa-san knows.
But the person who can support him the most right now is you. I myself also wanted to ask for your cooperation too.
Yuragi: …..
Riku: Ally is a difficult word, isn't it? There's no specific answer as to what to do.
However, I know Yuragi will surely become his unwavering ally much more than anyone else.
Recalling Yuragi-kun’s words that he didn't really understand Amakawa-san’s happiness, I quietly looked at him, who was troubled by the word "ally" …..Especially after he made that statement.
Yuragi: I probably won't be able to do it well.
Riku: It's okay even if that’s the case.
Amakawa-san will contact me when he wants to do this, that’s when we'll start our job.
And I’m willing to bet that Yuragi will be the first one he wants to see.
Don’t worry too much and do this in your own way.
Yuragi: ...Okay.
Yuragi-kun nodded firmly. Nevertheless, the uncertainty remained on his face.

Chapter 4
Amakawa-san's eyes widened when he heard Riku-san's words. Unable to let that information sink in, he looked at Riku-san with eyes full of doubts. He then lowered his gaze and began to frantically read the report in front of him.
Riku: The details are written in the report.
Because both of you were adopted, there was no record in the family register linking the two of you.
Raito: No. But it can't be... I mean, I grew up in a completely different place from her, you know?
That's... just weird. There’s no way a coincidence like this usually happens, right?
Riku: It's also possible that we're wrong. There's no record in the family register, and of course, no test was conducted.
However…….. I can't force you. But at least, I recommend that you take a DNA test.
Amakawa-san was left speechless, his gaze remained unsteady. Anyone could tell he's completely shaken.
Riku: …….
Over and over again. His gaze was fixed at the report, searching for any mistakes in the unchanging letters. A few minutes, or maybe not that long, of silence, suddenly a small murmur broke the quietness.
Raito: ...You can't marry a real sibling, right?
What should I tell her? "We've been family since the moment we were born"?
I recalled the impressive sight of him telling Yuragi-kun that he was finally going to have a real family.
Riku: We could arrange another opportunity to tell your fiance, but……..
I'm sure that's not what you want, right?
Raito: …..
Thank you.... I want to tell her with my own mouth.
And then, whether she will marry me or not… No. I can't do that
What I should from now on….. I'll think about it carefully. Despite not knowing that I have been dating my own sister... I'll accept that fact…
Completely broken and shaking, Amakawa-san spoke while holding his bag in front of him. As if trying to hide his small body slightly leaning down.
Tomose: Riku.
If he needs a ride, I can use the company car.
Ito: !
Raito: Eh? Oh, I'm fine. I can walk...
Tomose: Even if you can go home, I don't think you want to be seen.
Amakawa-san opened his eyes wide, indicating that Onda-san had hit the bullseye. He nodded quietly, his face remained twisted.
Tomose: The information obtained via the investigation is known only to the people here. Therefore, you won’t be subject to curiosity or criticism.
However, it is not hard to imagine that you would not feel that way. If you wish to leave here away from the eyes of others, I can take care of it.
Riku: ………………Amakawa-san. If you're too scared to leave now, why don't you stay here a little longer?
It doesn't matter if you just stay silent or tell me what you're feeling right now.
If there's anything I can do to ease your pain even a little, feel free to say anything.
His eyes swayed at Riku's words, then he began to speak softly.
Raito: ……This is something I have always longed for since I was a child. Something that looked even more dazzling from the outside.
Riku: Family?
Raito: Yes. I thought I would know "happiness" if I could become a family with her. I just wanted to know what it’s like.
Was my wish something so unforgivable that it would turn the world against us? No one wants us to be happy, it seems……
Amakawa-san put so much force into the bag he was holding in front of him to the point where it was crushed….
Riku: As long as it’s something a living human can do for you, please ask me anything.
Ito: !
Riku: If you request it, we will do our best to be the "proxy" you need now.
At Riku-san's words, Amakawa-san looked up in surprise. Then, after thinking for a moment, he slowly and timidly opened his mouth.
Raito: In that case... Would you be my ally?
I'm not asking you to acknowledge my feelings or our relationship. There’s no way I can say that.
An ally for us who have nowhere else to turn to…..
A faint, pleading voice.
Riku-san nodded vigorously without a moment of hesitation in order to make sure Amakawa-san’s voice wouldn’t disappear.
Riku: Undersood.
Riku-san’s tone was calm and had no second thoughts. Amakawa-san’s fist, which had been clenched on his lap, finally loosened a little.
Riku: Whatever decision you make, we will be on your side and celebrate on behalf of the people around you and society itself.
So to speak, a "blessing proxy".

Chapter 3
Yuzuru: Good work, Tomose.
Akehoshi: Someone even harder to imagine than Yura has arrived.
What kind of person will Tomose-san choose? A serious person like himself?
But he might unexpectedly make a good match with a clumsy person?
Yuragi: Since Tomose is quiet, I don’t think it’s gonna be a loud person.
Mao: For me, I think he can get along with a really talkative person. He usually responds to everything at once.
Akehoshi: Kinda almighty, right? What do you think, Yuzuru-san?
Yuzuru: Huh? Hmm... I wonder. But I'm sure it’s going to be a kind person just like Tomose himself.
Akehoshi: True. It may not exactly have a lovey-dovey atmosphere, but if his wife was kidnapped by a bad guy because of some old grudge, he'd probably go and rescue her right away.
Mao: Since when are we talking about a movie plot?
Yuragi: What's a bad guy there for anyway?
Ito: That sounds… more like a hero, I think.
Tomose: What are you talking about?
Akehoshi: Hmm, love talk?
Ito: (So it was labeled “love talk”.)
Riku: Good work. What are you getting so excited about?
Tomose: It seems to be love talk.
Riku: With this group of people?
Akehoshi: Maybe it's more like "marriage talk"?
Anyway, you came at the right time, Riku-san. The appearance of the man with the highest groom quality gonna make this conversation even more lively.
Riku: Excuse me?
Mao: Yeah. He's probably the type who remembers all the anniversaries and stuff.
Yuzuru: Yup. A very affectionate person.
Akehoshi: Riku-san is really unrivaled.
Riku: I don't really get it, but I guess that means I’m likable? Can I fall in love with you?
Akehoshi: But there's this thing about him….....
Yuragi: The worst part ever.
Riku: Am I going to be rejected all at once here?
Riku-san replied, and casually turned his gaze towards me and Kise-san.
Riku: Sorry, I got dragged along. Can I have words with Ito and Yuzuru later?
Tomose: We’ll be waiting at the office.
Ito: (Onda-san too... It must be about that request.)
The parents were surely found... But when my eyes met with Riku-san’s, I could feel a slight uneasiness, and my heart was unsettled.
Yuragi: ……..
Yuragi-kun seemed to have sensed it as well, judging from the puzzled look on his face. And my premonition turned out to be spot on.
I was entrusted by Kise-san to be present at the investigation report meeting as a member of the Main Office.
Riku: Is it just you today?
Raito: Yes. I was hoping to bring my girlfriend along, but work came up suddenly.
But she wanted to know the results as soon as possible, so she entrusted the report to me.
Ito: (Oh…....)
I stole a quick glance at Riku-san's profile and saw that he was smiling calmly as usual.
Ito: ...Now, Onda-san will report the results of this investigation.
Tomose: This is the investigation report regarding Amakawa-san’s parents.
Amakawa-san looked over the report with a mixture of nervousness and his inability to hide the expectations. Gradually, the initial sense of anticipation disappeared and his expression changed to a gentle one.
Raito: ……Not far from what I expected at all. Yeah, I don’t think I will contact him.
The report stated that Amakawa-san's parents were still living the same irresponsible lives as they did back then.
Raito: I clung to hope until the end, but now I can finally let go of my regrets. I feel a little better now.
Ahaha. I guess I'm stronger heart than I thought.
Riku: Yes, I can see that.
But I think being unable to cut something off and worrying is also a strength in itself.
Raito: Yeah, I agree. But I still don't know about her parents, or what they think.
If she still can't let go of them and is worried about it, I hope I can bear it together with her. So, what’s the situation? You found them, right?
Riku: Yes, we did.
Riku-san handed over another report while looking Amakawa-san in the eyes. Then, after a short pause, he spoke in his usual calm manner.
Riku: Let me tell you first. During the course of the investigation, we discovered that Amakawa-san and your fiance…… have the same father.
You two are related by blood, an older sister and a younger brother with a different mother.
Raito: …………………..Huh?

Chapter 2
Ito: Welcome.
Riku: Good work. Right now... Oh, seems like I got myself a private reservation.
Looking around the empty shop with no other human than myself, Riku-san smiled.
Ito: Maybe the bad weather is to blame here. And it’s not just today…. I'm a bit worried about sales.
Riku: That’s just the way it is in this season… There's an event coming up soon, so I hope it'll be sunny at least on that day.
Not to mention, Ito has planned it so carefully. Is it going to be in the chapel this time?
Ito: Yes. I managed to rent a really nice place.
Riku: A real chapel for a bridal-themed cafe? It will be a hit for sure.
Now is not the era where marriage is an absolute condition for happiness or something that guarantees you contentment….
At the end of the day, it's an event where many people who are interested in happy events gather.
Yuragi: But…. Looking for parents they’ve never met to obtain the happiness of having a family.
……………………I don’t get it.
Ito: ………….
Riku: Hmm? What's wrong?
Ito: Oh, it’s nothing. Thanks to the request, I've been thinking about the "happiness of marriage".
Riku: I see.
…..Correct me if I'm wrong. Could it be that you are worried about Yuragi right now?
Ito: !
Ah, well...
Riku: It's probably not something you can nod to right away, so it's okay.
Since I'm involved, I figured that it might be the case, taking “investigation request” into consideration.
Ito: (Yeah, "if negotiations are required"... Riku-san is the person in charge after all.)
Riku: When I heard the details, I had a lot of thoughts, neither good nor bad ones.
The bond between people is more complicated than you think as it brings about both fun and hardship.
It would be great if it turns out well, but of course there are cases where it doesn't. Especially in a pattern like this.
...I think Yuragi was worried that their loving relationship would get tangled up in an unpleasant way.
See? He's a pretty sharp kid.
Ito: (Oh, I see.)
(So Yuragi-kun was worried about that.)
Riku: Well, I'll do something about it anyway. By the way, even if something happens in the investigation request, I won't neglect the dress-up event. Do rest assured.
Ito: Yes. I know Riku-san won’t.
Riku: Eh, does that mean…..
Ito: Meaning… I have a lot of trust in you.
Riku: Trust… I see….. Well, that also makes me very happy.
Riku-san’s smile was so bitter that I could almost hear “too bad” and ordered several dishes.
A few days later, after a meeting with Riku-san and Onda-san, Amakawa-san's "investigative request" got underway in earnest.
Yuzuru: How is it?
Akehoshi: The size is perfect.
The sun was shining after the rain. A cafe on a regular closing day. Some of the members who would be participating in the event gathered to discuss the flow of traffic in the venue and try on costumes.
Mao: Was it only Akehoshi’s suit that came to us?
Ito: Yes. I received it early as they wanted to make sure if it’s okay or not.
Akehoshi: It looks really good. I literally could have a wedding like this.
Mao: Solo wedding?
Akehoshi: That doesn’t sound bad actually…… I could even put in a request for a bride role. Maochi, when are you free?
Mao: Three times the usual price during peak season.
Akehoshi: Too expensive. What about Yura?
Yuragi: I'm free but four times as much.
Akehoshi: 4 times? What should I do now?
Yuragi: Why is that my concern anyway? I’d rather die than doing it.
Akehoshi: Then I will hold a public application around there. "Who wants to be my bride?"
Yuzuru: Haha. There will be a lot of applicants for sure.
Ito: I agree.
Yuragi & Mao: Seriously?
Yuzuru: Eh?
Akehoshi: Haha, you’re mean.
Hey, seeing me like this, I do housework, I’m fine with not going out at night, and I will come straight home every day.
Yuragi: Yuzuru can easily do all of the above, so I’d rather choose him. He has one big quality that you don’t, not annoying.
Mao: Is there anyone who can beat Yuzuru in that respect?
He’s also got the sincerity that can make his spouse’s parents feel at ease during the greeting.
Akehoshi: Eh, are you saying I can’t do that?
Anyway, I agree. Yuzuru-san seems like someone who would build a peaceful family.
Yuzuru: Really?
Akehoshi: I'm sure you’ll notice all sorts of things and take them into consideration. For example, if your wife goes out and it suddenly starts raining, she'll be like, "Oh no, I didn't bring my umbrella"
Then, when she leaves the station, Yuzuru-san is already on the standby there. "You didn't bring it with you this morning, did you?" And she’s gonna think “I'm so glad I married this person.”
Ito: (That’s not hard to imagine at all.)
Yuragi: Speaking from experience.
Ito: (Oh, so it was based on a true story.)
Yuragi: I’m fine with Mao too. He's kind.
Yuzuru: Yeah.
Akehoshi: Maochi is kind, but I bet he'd say something like “we'll have separate bedrooms.” That's a bit lonely, you know?
Mao: Huh? What’s up with you and your weird imagination.
Akehoshi: Wahaha~ What about Yura...?
Mao: Regardless of the relationship, Yuragi probably won’t change much.
Yuzuru: Yeah, I think Yuragi will stay the same.
Yuragi: I don't know.
After his short reply, the cafe door opened.
Tomose: …..

Chapter 1
June Bride "If you get married in June, under the protection of the goddess Juno, you will be happy." Amidst the bright smiles that foresee that future, a colorful flower shower falls on the heads of the bride and groom all at once. The petals dance in the wind and dissolve into the clear blue sky.
Yuragi: You’re getting married?
After 9 p.m. Aporia's bar is now reserved for members only. Amakawa Raito-san showed up in his wrinkle-free suit that matched his neatly parted bangs.
Raito: That's right. I'm going to have a real family…. I can finally be happy.
Yuragi: I see.
Raito: I was supposed to talk about a new request with Kise-san, but I really wanted to tell Yura directly.
You are my younger brother after all. Sorry for taking up all of your time so suddenly.
Yuragi: It's fine.
Yuzuru: It really has been a while since you asked him to act as your younger brother.
Raito: Yes, it’s almost nostalgic at this point.
At first, I came here to ask for a father or mother figure. But I remember being worried because everyone was younger than I expected.
Yuzuru: That’s why I suggested the role of younger brother instead.
Ito: (Well, considering how skillful they are, if he really asked us to provide such a figure, I’m certain they would be able to do something about it.)
(Like, Kou-san for “father figure”.........Not that I can imagine what it would look like concretely, but I just know the outcome would turn out well.)
Raito: ….I was raised in a child facility ever since I was old enough to be aware of the surroundings and has lived my life without ever coming into contact with what is generally considered a "family".
That’s why I was very happy that Yura played a perfect younger brother. I even got to know a little bit about family.
Yuragi: Calling me good younger brother when you kept saying how cheeky I was, huh….
Raito: And I stand by that statement. You’re not reserved and hesitant to be spoiled at all.
I like that kind of amicability, the one that is different from that of friends.
I've been busy lately now that I have a girlfriend. It's been a while, but I'm glad I was able to tell you this.
Yuzuru: We are also happy to hear such wonderful news. When are you getting married?
Raito: We plan to do marriage registration at the end of this month since our anniversary is coming up. Although we haven't decided on the date of the ceremony yet.
Yuzuru: So you’re aiming for June Bride?
Raito: Yes. Actually, like me, she doesn't really have family connections, so she wishes to be blessed just like how others have been.
Okay, that's the end of report to my "younger brother." Let us begin the talk about my request this time.
Yuragi: A new request that’s not character acting, right?
Is that my cue to leave?
Raito: I would be reassured if Yura was here. But if you’re busy…
Yuragi: It's fine. I’ll stay.
Raito: Thank you.
Yuzuru: Then, allow me to confirm the request again.
The request this time is “find the real parents of Amakawa-san and his fiancé", right?
Raito: Exactly.
Yuragi: Searching for the parents you've never met?
Raito: Yes.………… There might have been a reason for it, but if those people are the kind to abandon their children, I wouldn’t say that I expect anything from them.
Yuragi: ………
Raito: Even so, it may sound naive, but I can't throw away the possibility of a future where we celebrate our new beginning and live happily alongside each other.... Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?
Yuragi: Not really. I didn't mean to come off that way, sorry.
Raito: It’s okay, Yura has nothing to apologize for.
Anyway, since we were both in the same situation, we promised to become each other's first family. That’s when the talk about our parents came up.
…..Oh, sorry. I guess I talked too much when you didn’t even ask.
Yuzuru: That's not true. In fact, I find your relationship wonderful.
…..Our staff member, Onda will be in charge of the investigation.
If, for example, you want to contact your parents after this investigation and negotiations are required, we have the right person who can handle it, so rest assured.
I can arrange a meeting with the person in charge at a later date.
Raito: Please, and thank you.
Yuragi: ………
Even after seeing off Amakawa-san, Yuragi-kun looked like he's still deep in thought.
Ito: (Is something wrong? I don't think he's in a bad mood though...)
Yuragi: Somehow…
Yuzuru: Huh?
Yuragi: That really bothers me.
Ito: (Eh?)
Yuragi: I do understand what Raito wants to do and what he means by "happiness".
But…. Looking for parents they’ve never met to obtain the happiness of having a family.
……………………I don’t get it.
I mean….
Ito: (I mean……?)
Yuragi: ……….
Never mind.
Ito: ….I see.
(It doesn't seem like he's against the request though.)
(But I can't just ask him back like it’s nothing. I might touch on a sensitive topic.)
While I was wondering what to say, Yuragi-kun started walking without returning to the office.
Yuragi: Now that it’s over, I'm going home.
Are you the same, Ito? Let's go together.
Ito: Ah... No. I still have a few things to do.
Yuragi: Sure.
Yuzuru: Good work. Be careful on your way home.
As always, Kise-san saw him off calmly. Yuragi-kun nodded slightly and left.
