Looks like the OMORI subbreddit found me lmao. I was notified of it by an ask that seems to have disappeared (Tumblr being Tumblr, ig), so I'm including a screenshot of the ask here for posterity

Whether or not Omori's judgements are grounded in reality, they don't mean Sunny should kill himself.

I didn't say that. In fact, I wanted to emphasize how absurd it is that Sunny's irrational and suicidal self-loathing makes this much sense.

The game's failure to provide solid evidence against the arguments Omori makes is a fault of the writing itself, not Sunny.

His arc is about him coming to grip with what he has done, not where he grows to be a good person. Sunny being a good friend or something isn't really important to whether he should live or die.

We don’t really get to see if Sunny really changes beyond getting the words alone out. Because that’s not the point of the game. The entirety of the game’s narrative is about finding the courage to take the first step toward real healing; it is about the act of grasping what is real, to face in the direction of reality and therefore pain, suffering, and loss, but also happiness, growth, and change. But we only get to see the initial act of facing in that direction. And that’s what makes the game so powerful, is that it explores a process that is often so overlooked or seen as just a vehicle to a different, better story. But as the saying goes, a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. What we see is the first step, and barely that.

Why should I be invested in said arc if the game gives me no reason to root for him? That literally was the point of the post the OP linked.

Sunny feeling bad for the shitty thing he did just isn't worth getting invested into. It's a start, sure, but if he takes a roughly 25 hr game just to muster up the courage to confess to a crime, and he does so only for his own peace of mind, why should I want him to reach his peace of mind in the first place?

Mind you, this is not the same as "I want Sunny to kill himself." What I'm saying is "OMORI wants me to care about Sunny, but doesn't put in the effort to give him any sort of personality, so why should I care about whether he kills himself or not?"

I actually agree with the OG post on the claim that Sunny is an extremely passive character [...] it’s incredibly frustrating to watch, which is kinda the whole point.

The Backstage trio definitely isn't real, though.

they nevertheless demonstrate a significant overhaul taking place within Sunny and therefore a significant amount of character development!

What is that even supposed to mean? What, should I consider Omori randomly seeing whatever that black-and-white apparition of Mari is supposed to be at North Lake solid character development?

I've previously explained why Headspace doesn't really matter much and why Backstage makes no sense story-wise, but it seems like I'll have to reiterate.

I'm not going to care about Sunny just because of what he thinks or says (and he doesn't even say much lol). What defines you are your actions. Sure, Sunny can say he'll miss his friends and dream about them all he wants, but if his love for them isn't backed up by what he does over the course of the game, I won't be inclined to believe in it.

Likewise, Backstage doesn't demonstrate character development to me. It's just Sunny shoving words of comfort he wants to hear at the moment into his friends' mouths, which is what Headspace was. The only thing that's different is the sprites.

What's the point of having your character trying to kick an addiction and framing said addiction as a bad thing only to have the character indulge in that addiction once again and frame it as a good thing at the end of the story?

By the way, I love that the comment's rebuttal to my first gripe - that Sunny doesn't do anything in real life that counts as actual character development - is basically "he changes on the inside!", which misses the point that he doesn't do anything substantial in real life. peak

The tragic irony of it all was that a depiction of someone suffering terribly was criticized for not being a “model” depiction of said suffering - as though there’s some kind of standard unit of measurement for that. I think in similar fashion, Sunny takes a lot of heat by players precisely because his situation is so extreme.

I love when people make no attempt to actually engage with what I'm trying to say and instead create an entirely different argument in their head because it'd be easier to argue against.

I'm not criticizing Sunny because his situation is extreme. I just don't like him because the game doesn't give you much of a reason to and because his actions towards the people we're supposed to see as his closest friends throughout the story paint him as very unpleasant at best. That's all there is to it.

Also, I've never seen The Whale. Looking it up on TVTropes, though...

Let’s be honest here: even if you struggle with some kind of mental health issue, you probably won’t - hopefully won’t - really be able to understand what Sunny is experiencing. That doesn’t make for a very relatable character!

I'm not one to measure how good a character is by whether they're relatable or not. In fact, I despise the notion that a character must be relatable in order to be well-written. However, in this case, I need to ask - if Sunny isn't supposed to be relatable, what is he supposed to be? Again, why should I care about him?

Unlike Charlie, who is apparently nice to people even when they treat him like dirt, Sunny doesn't have any notable character traits besides his mental illness. We're repeatedly told he's nice and supportive, but he's never shown doing anything substantial for his friends other than being "the baby of the group" before Mari's death, nor do we see him trying to be supportive to them after it.

Sunny makes no indication that his friends must accept his apology or that he expects their forgiveness,

but the secret ending shows that he did in fact forgive himself.

And everyone he hurt by letting them believe in Basil's lie are glossed over, but hey, who gives a shit about these people, right?

Aubrey’s reaction and her pushing Basil into the lake is a great example of this; a very similar scenario plays out, only potential tragedy is avoided. Does that still make Aubrey a killer? Is she solely to blame for the push, even if it was fully intentional?

What about her upbringing

"Her upbringing" can only excuse so much. At some point, a Freudian Excuse stops being an excuse, and Aubrey pushing Basil into the lake was that point. The game doesn't bother delving into her upbringing much either, so, again, why should I care?

and, not nearly mentioned as much, Basil’s own continued choice to keep the truth hidden and allow people like Aubrey to remain in unnecessary pain and suffering?

Aubrey didn't even know the truth when she attacked Basil, though. She just flipped out at him for no reason.

It's easy for the player to grow attached to the main character because they're playing as them. Summing up Sunny's character traits as, in the critique's own words, "#relatable traits," is unbelievably disingenuous. Sunny isn't just "depressed and quiet." He is a traumatised child who is borderline neurotic and suicidal.

Okay. Aside from him being traumatized and being the protagonist, why should I care about him? These are not enough.

Trauma does not constitute one's personality - it informs it. I've said as such in the post the OP linked, and yet everyone seems to omit it in their rebuttals to my arguments. Convenient!

In the sense that he was more concerned with losing his friends' love than what they might think and/or feel about the truth, which is why he went along with Basil's lie. He cares only in terms of how it affects him.

It's more so... you know, that Omori was wrong and that Sunny's friends will forgive him and love him regardless? 

...The whole point of the true ending is that there is no definitive answer to whether they forgive him or not.

I'm kind of starting to doubt whether the people lambasting me for not understanding the game actually understand it themselves.

His development is certainly nuanced, but to say it’s nonexistent you would have to play with a blindfold. 

If I'm being honest, the more OMORI fans insist on the writing being too Unconventional™/Nuanced™/Complex™/Symbolic™ for people to understand and that everyone who has problems with it is lacking media literacy, the less believable and more obnoxiously pretentious they sound.

Also the words of encouragement Sunny receives during the Omori boss fight are all in-line with the characterisation of his friends and the overall narrative of the game, something the author of that critique happily omits.

So yeah, we know Twitter is a dumpster fire and we wish it would get better, but no. Elon Musk is planning to implement the whole “pay me $8 per month just to have a voice” thing. Yeah hell no.

Sorry but not like I can do that anyways. I wouldn’t be able to afford it anyways. In fact at least 2/3rds of people won’t be able to due to our Lower, Middle, and High social classes. And of course, Elon is on that top shelf who is spoiled with greed. He doesn’t want to hear voices, he wants money. He wants fortune. He doesn’t care about the people, he cares about what HE wants and nobody else. Reason behind him even buying Twitter was to gain and sway a major political audience, of which is only one targeted group.

In short, no one is going to be willing to pay for a subscription just to be able to talk, to have a voice. Otherwise if you continue on without paying, you’ll be shadowbanned. Everyone hates shadowban, it sucks, no one can see you or your content. And that right there is what he’s aiming to do. It’s a tactic to get you to pay. Don’t instigate his desires, show how much you hate the idea by promoting your work elsewhere or make a stand for it on Twitter by banding together. After all, it’s the numbers that count.

Anywho, aside my whole rant of this idiotic thing, I plan to revamp my Tumblr if anything goes wrong! If you came from Twitter, thanks for continuing to follow my content, it means the world to me. But I won’t be leaving Twitter if that’s what you’re thinking. But if I can’t seem to grow much more there, I plan to become active here or Instagram (though mind you, Instagram will have Sonic-only artwork, it will only act as an art-only account with no stories).

Let me run down how things will go....

If I become active here, expect multiple blogs due to the blog feature. I have a couple I’ve used before, so I’d like to get to using that feature again.

Multiple blogs would be art-only/ask blogs. Examples would be targeted towards my certain audiences who follow me for certain things. There’s my Sonic work (which I primarily focus on), Postal/Postal Dude, other fandom media, and Original works. I may make at least 3 blogs for this.

This blog (my main one) will act as a source/main blog. It will be for my original work while I’ll create other blogs for interaction, such as Sonic fanart and Postal Dude fanart. Those are my current focuses atm, so things are subject to change.

Regarding Instagram, my main account will remain as a Sonic art-only account. My secondary one (needing to be revamped) will plan to turn into an alt or maybe just a SFW-ish Postal art account.

Due to Tumblr having an extensive amount of a writing feature, I may turn my Postal blog into a / Postal sona blog as well. Lore will be added, will show how I interpret Postal content from my eyes, and etc. It’s gonna be one of those cheesy ask blogs too lol. So in short, you can ask my Postal sona questions (still thinking if I should do a take on my version of the Dude and how I perceive him, I’ll let y’all know later), ask about lore hints, ask about the relationship*, and other stuff.

*(FYI, I don’t actively ship them as a normal fangirl would. I just find their dynamic interesting and see them more platonic-like. But each to their own ig.)

alright, i'm just going to post links with some commentary as i go. feel free to ask any more questions you have.

moving on, i'm just going to go through posts in reverse chronological order.

tallstar taking a mate admittedly, this is more about cats and sexuality than windclan, but i provide the commentary that windclan...has a particular view on sexuality and fluidity. one thing i haven't explored but should is the role visiting cats have in windclan.

whoops that's a code word, my plug for solacefruit has been activated. okay, as you may be aware, based on the fact that i have a whole tag for it, i'm obsessed with solacefruit. now, i love everything they do, but i would like to point you particularly to "make a mighty sound" for a fantastic exploration of this idea.

i don't want to spoil anything, but i do think windclan, and maybe cats as a whole, but windclan has a certain view towards relationships that very much breaks them into pieces. i'm a "love is a verb" person, so the idea that you can grow to love someone romantically by going through the actions of love makes sense. not to say you will, but you can.

(to be clear i'm not out advocating for arranged marriages just saying that they can work, they're not destined to be bad, and there's a difference between forced marriage and arranged marriage.)

anyway.

this was a lot of words to say, cats do not have a human (and particularly, western/american) understanding of relationships, which makes analyzing them in those terms difficult.

early hymn talk i'll probably say more below, but it is here.

general ibtwicm notes might get you into the headspace for some of my choices in ibtwicm.

i don't have a ton to say because this pretty much all holds, but uh, yeah.

poetry and language this isn't strictly about windclan, but it does explain some of what i think about when writing hymns.

obviously, i'm writing english translations, but these general themes are what i have in mind. it's also part of why i say i don't think i'll ever release a "full hymnal" for windclan, because i don't know if my weak worldbuilding heart could take it if i only had translations.

names part two very much not about windclan, but just some thoughts on names. as i've said before, i support all names and worldbuilding equally, but if you want my thoughts on names, go buckwild.

windclan holds a special place in my heart. (i know my oc avatar is from skyclan shhh it's because of the backstory he sees ghosts.) but i grew up in this super sporty household as a lil asthmatic klutz, and running was a sport i couldn't mess up, so of course windclan appealed to me.

they're actually third on my list of favorite clans, but they. it's a special place in my heart that they hold, especially after reading dawn of the clans and moth flight's vision, where i got an asthmatic cat and an adhd cat, both in windclan.

god i should reread dotc it's good.

alright, here's the deal on hymns: i am not going to fight to get duets to post correctly. there's a 0% chance i can in tumblr's wonky ass new editor with no markdown, not to mention how difficult it would have been in the old editor. so i'm going to talk a lil about what i've got, and post some stanzas that i think don't get explored a lot in ibtwicm.

we're discussing these in the order that they go in. a reminder that these are all sections of one epic poem. that said, i don't know where the gaps are. like, i don't know what's between these, if that makes sense.

the wind

the wind, the very first hymn. this is an ode to, well, windclan. it's a song about everything that makes them them. it's filled with poetry about the wind, about the seasons, and it's just...well, it's a bit of a genesis, in a way.

The wind — like the rain, like the river — calls the name of each star in its breath. The wind — like the earth, like the stone — anchors us to our home. The wind — like the sun, like the sky — is knowable only by name.

i wanted to share this stanza because the last line doesn't show up in ibtwicm (at least so far, i cut the reference), and it really, really, makes a difference imo.

anyway, windclan is basically tying the wind in with every other fundamental part of their life here.

they are the wind, and that's that.

the hare

okay, this one has a line that comes up a lot in ch1, but i already talked about that, so instead, i'm going to talk about this stanza

Speak of the earth and the dens, and you will be answered: By the call of the howling gales, the open earth singing in response. But speak of that which grows above, of the grass and field, And you will be answered by the softness of the buds and the roots.

okay, we get deadfoot thinking about this when he's talking to yellowfang.

i like this stanza because it really tells us what the hare is about. now, hares are not something windclan catches. hares are huge, y'all, there's no way they take one down. i take liberties with ecology, but not that many.

(i.e., a team of cats definitely could take one down, but i know too much, and would prefer letting team hunting stay a plot thing, and not fundamentally alter the environment in the way it would.)

now anyway, all of these hymns come from the time of the tunnelers. and the point of this is, even though the work of tunnelers and moor runners is disconnected, they fundamentally affect each other.

a moor runner must trust the hollows of the earth beneath them won't collapse, and a tunneler must trust that the prey they chase up will be caught.

it's all very symbiotic and is, well, in a way, a love poem. plus i really like the line "the open earth singing in response"

of the warrens

so this has one line, one you might not even know is a hymn, in ch1, but i'll share the whole stanza.

And as for the subject of fallow fields: Fallowed fields make for hungry prey, Yet hungry prey makes desperate rabbits, Who leap into our claws.

and ig my big point is, the hymns are a cultural artifact. just like many of the rules in the old testament have to do with hygiene things being codified into religion, this whole hymn is about hunting advice.

the moon on the river

okay, out of all the hymns, this is the most complete, and because ashfoot and deadfoot sing it together, and deadfoot discusses it, i only have one stanza to share.

Under the coldness, you shine back at me, And I do everything to keep the clouds from threatening you.

now, this poem is about love, grief, and being separated. it's a particular kind of grief, and windclan discourages grief, so this is one of only a few ways to really, fully express it.

and this section, in particular, is about love in times of hardship.

i don't have. a lot to say here. but the way hardship changes how you love someone can be particular and intense.

(temporarily, this happens sometime before "Spare for my chosen few / All I have is given towards the distant ground.")

the gorse in the wind

oh shit! i have so fucking much to say okay first.

the series title does not come from this hymn.

second, this is a challenging hymn okay. fuck. i have so much to say. where to start so! moors are actually relatively wet. think british countryside, not, like, a cool desert.

this is something i always knew? i read the secret garden a lot as a kid. but. i've seen stuff about moors being dry, and it's just one of those things that really...starts to eat under your skin. anyway.

okay, so. gorse is a dry plant. it does not like rain. it grows in sandy soil, etc etc, and yet. aside from everything we know about gorse and warriors, it also grows in this moor. because i say so.

okay, so. so so so. the lines quotes here are really deceptive, and i bet no one understood why, and that makes me just a little sad, but i couldn't find a good way to explain it in text, so uh, yeah, anyway. there's an exchange between ashfoot and deadfoot: "THE GORSE: You called me the heather and I grew stronger. / THE WIND: I called you the heather and brought rain for you to grow."

so...so do you see? do you see the point? it's about communication, needs, challenging each other. fadskj;l i love this. okay, so. the point is that heather is fragile, soft, pretty, and gorse is the opposite. the part of the wind is trying to be kind and complimentary, but the gorse is saying, fuck that, you are not being kind to me by undercutting my strength.

anyway, this passage is sung by the gorse:

In what good company have I set down roots, That even through snow fall I flower. You called me the heather and yet I've weathered, Far more than your sweet-named love.

so uh, yeah, this adds context. gorse! gorse is a hardy plant that continues to flower basically all season round. it's cool. it's cool. gorse is super cool. fuuuck y'all it's such a small thing and i've contained talking about it until now, but now it's too much. the floodgates are open, and i thought about this small detail too much.

okay. deep breath. gorse is a really easy plant to grow, but it's still adapted for dry environments. so the "even through snow fall I flower" part is a little tongue in cheek: gorse itself will flower in the cold, but snow is a type of precipitation, which as we've covered, is not gorse friendly.

then we have some rhyming and puns in the next line, and finally, "yet I've weathered, / Far more than your sweet-named love." like. yes. love as a form of softness is not necessarily helpful.

i mean, consider the damaging "soft trans boi" problem. same energy.

right. okay. so we've got all that? now if you remember, this is sung when deadfoot thinks ashpaw doesn't respect him, and ashpaw says she'll sing with him if she can sing the gorse, so in essence, she's telling him...not to back off, per se, but that...she is the "hard part" of the relationship. like, okay, i refuse to even bring up gender roles in human relationships, but uh, her point is very much, "i am the gorse, and you are the wind," and it's a very monumental moment.

okay, this is the last hymn i have in concrete terms, and i cut a bit of it from the latest chapter, so yeah. it's also, uh, okay everything i have for it is only a line or two, but i wanted to share this closing line (sung together):

i don't have a ton to say about them, but i just. i like it.

if we apply the same ecology discussion from the gorse and the wind, we see heather is a plant that grows in acidic, infertile soil, and heath (which is not the same as a heather, but also kind of is) is a defining quality of heathland, which is...i'm not kidding, it's hot discourse about the difference between moorland and heathland.

i'm not getting involved, but my point is, if the gorse in the wind is a hymn about finding a working relationship, about mutual respect, etc., then the heather and earth is a hymn about working well together in a terrible situation.

uh, wow! can you tell i like plants? because while parts of my ecology are dubious (see: everything regarding the rabbits in ch1), the plants part are well thought out. this shit is carefully detailed metaphor.

and that's why i won't be releasing a full hymnal. it's hard to as on top of this as i want to be. i'm not kidding, writing even four lines of a hymn usually takes me about twenty minutes, because i pull up a lot of research about how things work, how they interact with each other, etc., and then there's wordsmithing, cat worldview filter, etc.

but i hope this overview of what i've got is a good insight into my general thoughts. and i will eventually release more and more of the hymns i've got written.

As a perusal of Heughan's social media accounts will tell you, the Scottish actor may be even more secretive about his love life than Caitriona and Tony are. He shares little-to-no evidence of a lady in his life. Since 2018, Heughan has been romantically linked to Irish actress Amy Shiels, who Twin Peaks: The Return fans may recognize as Candie, one of the Mitchum Brothers' identical cocktail-dress-clad assistants.

Shiel refers to Heughan as "big brother" in this April 2018 birthday greeting, which...you know...isn't super girlfriend-y.

I have erred on the side of caution in putting people on this list. I don’t want this to be a witch hunt of people whose political beliefs are different from mine-- I think there’s a lot of space to disagree on political issues, but loudly supporting Donald Trump in spite of his racist, xenophobic, misogynist, Islamophobic, ableist views just because his policies will benefit you personally is not something that’s acceptable to me. However, to avoid casting the net too wide I’m not going to include people who have solely liked pro-Trump posts or followed pro-Trump people-- those are both things that people could do for a variety of reasons, and I think it’s risky to make assumptions about people’s political beliefs based on them. Aishhh, not her again.

I crouch down from my reclined seat in first class, rubbing my eyes trying to regain conscious. The cabin is dimly lit. Even though our flight to Japan was easily an hour and a half, because it was so late, the plane interior emitted a warm, cobalt blue and Hyung Jun maknae was knocked out in the seat beside me.

I limped towards and into the lavatory, as my legs fell asleep along with me. I emptied out, splashed some water on my face, and snuck in some anti-anxiety pills my psychiatrist prescribed me. Drowning that bitter taste, I tilted my mouth under the faucet and drank enough just to force it down. I groan in disgust, until I looked in the mirror and saw the deteriorating man that had become Heo Young Saeng.

Only my mother & father, Hyun Joong hyung, and Kyu Jong knew about the anxiety and borderline depression I've been having since that last incident I had in my attempt at a normal, healthy, and actually existent love life. I always hated not having things the way I wanted or had planned, and the stress from all that heartache back then, on top of the 301 comebacks had triggered some unwanted effects.

My body and face weight have practically melted off. My eyebags have darkened and puffed up more than balloons, and my dimples have the slightest hint of laugh lines and wrinkles in them. There's a saying in Korean that means "getting older," which is "eating your years," and it had me thinking maybe the years are eating me.

I felt like my body was wasting away, along with that person who left so long ago. Part of me probably went right with her, and still haunts me to this day.

I walked back to my seat. Hyung Jun maknae still asleep, cocooned in his complimentary airline blanket, like the real baby he is. It was kind of cute, honestly. Then, I started to notice the nervous tapping I was doing on the armrest. I felt the electric twinge crawl from my spine to the center of my neck, and slowly rolled my head back like there was a cold wind in the air.

Damn, the pills haven't kicked in at all yet. Calm down, Young Saeng. Gwenchana...

I felt my chest expanding, about to hyperventilate, when I felt a hand on my left shoulder. "Hyung, gwenchanayo. We're right here, and we're here for you," a soft, mellow voice soothed me with its familiarity.

"K-kyu Jong," I stuttered, barely able to keep my breathing down comfortably.

"Hyung, hyung," Kyu Jong cooed, rubbing my back to comfort me and handing me a glass of water to calm me down.

I glare him down, for he knew I didn't like people pitying me or caring for me out of pity. I felt so weak, a let-down, a failed example of a Leader and hyung... but I knew that this is Kyu Jong. My bandmate, and my brother... a true one at that, even if not by blood, and he was just concerned and sincere that he wanted to be there for me as much as I for him and the rest of the members.

Shakily, I down the glass and slowly begin to relax. I plopped back into my seat, with a warm towel folded on my forehead that the stewardess gave us. Kyu Jong lied and said I had an extreme fever.

As my muscles grew limp and my breathing comfortable, my eyes closed. No veins popping out of my temples this time. Just smooth... guitar strums, followed by a jazzy bass, and a soft drum tap. I started to sway in my seat, Marvin Gaye/ Motown-style, and snapped my fingers to a 1-2 tempo in my head.

"I loved you so much But why am I feeling nothing? Before I fell asleep, I suddenly thought of you Then I thought for a while How was it back then? Your face, your name They are the same But why am I being like this? That love is over anyway"

I felt a tap on the side of my bicep, snapped out of my inner jam, turned to behind my seat, catching the fallen warm towel in my right hand. I looked at Kyu Jong with a deer-in-the-headlights look, "Mwoya? Are we here??" I moved my head around for any sign of landing.

"Oh, aniyo," Kyu Jong looked equally confused. "Aniyo, hyung... I just thought you were having another anxiety attack."

"Ah, aniya!" I smiled, the first real one I've had this whole flight. "Quite the opposite, Kyu Jong-ah. In fact..."

I hunched over the right side of my seat, under sleeping Hyung Jun's feet, and pulled out my backpack from the storage compartment. I have to write this down. The chords, lyrics... everything. I dug through every pocket, every zippered compartment, and slowly felt the color leave my face again.

"Eodiya? Nae noteu yeogiseo?!?" I whine frantically, dumping my bag's contents all over my lap and the cabin floor.

"Hyung, what's wrong?" Kyu Jong slides his head out onto the aisle.

I drop the bag onto my lap and it proceeded to fall to the ground, finally waking up Hyung Jun up.

"YA! Hyung, are we there yet? Mwo? What's all this mess??" Junnie annoyingly questions.

I turn to Kyu Jong, feeling my whole arm shake. My seat vibrated with it under my clutch. "H-hyung??"

"Mul... mul juyseyo! Ppalli!!!" I wheezed, desperately gasping for air before collapsing with a thud!

I didn't hear a thing after that. Just echos, in and out of sounds. It was more than just leaving or misplacing my notebook at home... it was dealing with the actual fact of letting her go permanently. Really erasing her... only to be taken, controlled, and possessed this monster that has tortured me, since the day she left. It's like... she always wants me to remember her.

Nico’s Guide to Meal Prep

Meal prep has been one of my biggest saviors in graduate school, helping me stay well-fed and on budget. People frequently ask me for meal prep advice (mostly new grad students, who heard from someone else in the department that I am the one to ask; like, one person on tumblr; sometimes my acquaintances on Instagram). And so, here is my first ever guide to meal prep: 

First, there are some major guidelines:

1. Schedule your cooking/prep time: we don’t have time, we make time. I clear parts of my schedule that are for cooking and meal prep and I do what I can not to schedule other things in these slots. Make it part of your routine and treat it as sacred. For me, it’s Sundays (to get ready for the week) and Tuesdays (when my roommate has a long day and I know the kitchen will be free). My busiest days are Monday and Wednesday, so this schedule tends to work out so that when I come home at 6pm, I can just pop some leftovers into the microwave. I’m away from home a lot on the weekends, so this is when I end up eating out most. If I do stay home (cause sometimes you just need this, ya know), I like to plan at least one elaborate meal or baking venture. Relatedly,  you also want to schedule your planning time (when you look up recipes if needed, survey what you have at home, make a grocery list, shop). I do most of this Sundays as well). 

2. Look at your week and determine when you need to eat a homemade meal, then decide what you want to eat. On a normal week, I need to cover 15 meals: breakfast at home M-F; packed lunch MW; lunch at home TThF; and dinners at home Sun-Th. I try to shop once a week and no more, so I hate when I don’t plan enough. Just as bad, though, is having too much and potentially having to throw it out - like when avocados hit 2 for $1 and I buy 8 of them, but only eat four during the week. Within reason, I plan as precisely as I can. It’s pretty common that I’ll eat a banana with breakfast, but if I only do five at home each week, there is no use in getting eight bananas. Once you decide what to eat make a grocery list. We already know sticking to a shopping list is a good budgeting habit, but its an even better meal prepping habit. 

3. It’s okay to eat the same thing everyday and it’s easier to do if you like them. When I eat lunch at home, its almost always truffle salted avocado egg salad on toast with potato chips. When I pack lunch, it’s PB&J with potato chips and an apple. One of the biggest benefits of meal prepping is the way it reduces the number of decisions you need to make in a day (read about decision fatigue here). Deciding what to eat is half the battle, and then you might have to make it? No wonder we break down and order take out instead. Minimizing the decision making over the course of the week adds up to a lot of cognitive free time. There was just a story about this in The Atlantic. 

4. Keep it simple, feel no shame. The meal preppers on Instagram are #theworst because their beautiful, perfect foods and elaborately portioned meals are not only saving them all kinds of time, but they are healthy, fresh, from scratch. #STOP. Don’t let anyone shame you about your meal prepping and approach it from whatever level you are at. There are weeks that I decide I’m eating Honey Nut Cheerios with banana slices for all five breakfasts and this is fine. Commit to whatever works for you because it is far more important to eat breakfast than it is to eat mini quiche with sausage link and pancake, plated in a conveniently subdivided tupperware. If a big batch of quinoa, store-bought BBQ sauce covered chicken breasts, and frozen broccoli steamed in the microwave is your level, own it. You can always scale up, but please don’t “go big” the first time you prep, get overwhelmed, and never prep again. 

Now, to the foods part: 

Do whatever works for you, but here are some of my go-to meal prep foods and strategies. You might find they work for you too; and if they don’t, perhaps they provide some inspiration at least. 

The staples:

Eggs

Batch cooked grains (quinoa, rice, oatmeal)

Avocados

Beans and lentils

Bananas

Apples

Once a Tinderfella asked me what I enjoyed cooking most. I racked my brain for recipes and scrolled my IG feed for an answer. After 20 minutes, I wrote back “eggs.” He didn’t believe me. Seriously, think of all the things you can do with eggs: over easy, hard boiled, soft boiled, scrambled, quiche, meringue, omelet, frittata––you catch my drift. Anyway, I always have boiled eggs in the fridge (for my avo egg salads & for emergency snacks); some weeks I make a quiche and divvy it up over the week (it’s great for breakfast OR for dinner); many mornings, I make an egg over easy to put on top of toast or savory oatmeal. 

Batch cooking grains gives you a foundation to work with. Say I’m making a curry that I’ll serve over rice. I’m likely to cook more rice than I need for that and also make garlic fried rice or maybe arroz caldo (ginger-rice soup, like congee) to eat with eggs for breakfast all week too. Or, maybe I’ll decide I want quinoa based grain bowls for dinners that week: maybe you can plan two different types so you have variety, but your foundation is already done. Oatmeal for breakfast is another thing I like to batch cook. I’m a savory oatmeal person, so I do garlic, scallions in butter, boil the oats in chicken broth, and usually add cheese and breakfast meat. I’ll make enough for the week and then cook an egg each morning to top it off. 

For health and money reasons (read my money snapshot!), I don’t eat a lot of meat in my home cooking. Beans and lentils are very easy on the wallet and have a very high impact nutritionally. Because its more cost effective, better for the environment, and easier on storage space, I  use dry beans and have a tiny crockpot to cook them in, but I also keep a couple cans in the pantry at all times for days when I just don’t have the time to wait. 

Apples and bananas are pretty self explanatory - self-contained, portable fruits. I like bananas in my cereals or slathered in peanut butter as part of a balanced breakfast and I like apples for when I pack lunch. What I also like about these is their versatility if I neglect them. I can throw bananas into the freezer for smoothies and I can make applesauce if I ignore them too long. 

Avocados are essential to my near-daily dose of truffle salted avocado egg salad, so they’re always on my grocery list, all sneering about their cost aside. We have to invest in ourselves first, and so I’m all for foods I like that also make me feel good. That said, I draw the line at about $1.25 per avo. Luckily, they’re nearly always 99 cents, and occasionally go on sale for less. I typically only eat half at a time, so 2-3 avos a week really isn’t too taxing on the grocery budget, and I have nearly perfected the ripening process, so not a penny goes to waste.
