One day out of pure curiosity I googled "world's first diving suit" and was greeted with this.
And I was never the same.
Tumblr media
"John LethbridgeĀ (1675ā€“1759) invented the firstĀ underwater divingĀ machine in 1715. He lived in the county ofĀ DevonĀ inĀ South West EnglandĀ and reportedly had 17 children.Ā He is the subject of theĀ Fisherman's FriendsĀ song "John in the Barrel".
John Lethbridge was a wool merchant based inĀ Newton AbbotĀ who invented a diving machine in 1715 that was used to salvage valuables from wrecks. This machine was an airtight oak barrel that allowed ā€œthe diverā€ to submerge long enough to retrieve underwater material."

Thereā€™s also these doodles from roughly a year ago. Donā€™t believe The Narrators lies, he doesnā€™t want to admit he canā€™t improve his eyesight by upgrading his form.
Tumblr media
I drew the selkie narrator a while back after revisiting LooneyLlamaā€™s Stannarrator fic ā€œBallroom Dance on a Wave in the Oceanā€. I think itā€™s a really sweet fic for anyone who wants a selkie fic without having the romance based on the deception and entrapment that is common in other selkie stories.

;-; i just wanted to say ty for all your posts in the fof tag. now i'm thinking about ying lei and his yeye ying zhao... and now there is no one left to guard the mountain, but ying lei died in the same way as ying zhao, saving people he cares about
Donā€™t mention it! I blorb too much about things I really like it embarrasses me at times. Iā€™m just glad you like my takes!! Anyway:
šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ this drama exists to hurt us,, I think more than dying for people he cares about (because nearly everyone who died did that), Ying Lei's characterisation and death provides a unique but tragic pov within the main cast
Ying Lei my poor Ying Lei. We donā€™t really talk too much about him donā€™t we. So letā€™s just talk all about him. CHARACTER ANALYSIS TIME YAY
Ying Lei is unadulterated sunshine and has a good heart. Morally, he is on the same page as the rest of the team. Yet, it absolutely breaks my heart that his fate is to be an outsider within the thematic concern of choice in FoF and resultingly, in the narrative.
His place in the overarching thematic concerns of FoF is unclear when we first meet him - he is simply a wandering half mountain god half demon with a bright disposition. But as with many characters in FoF, their appearances aren't just for naught. Ying Lei's representative theme - the freedom of choice and the ability to choose one's identity - finally shows itself in one of the most beautifully written (am biased) episodes of the series, Episode 17, which is all about choice.
In this episode, Ying Lei vents his displeasure of the Wilderness towards grandpa Ying Zhao
"I hate this place. I hate the Wilderness. It's so bleak and desolate. (ā€¦) If I have to stay here forever, I'd rather die. (ā€¦) I like the mortal world. I like everything that is vibrant and lively."
To which grandpa Ying Zhao gives him his blessing to head to the Mortal Realm,
"ā€¦as your grandfather, I respect your decision. You can be a Mountain God or an ordinary person."
His next sentence cements the plight of many demons (and humans) we encounter in the story,
"For many demons in the Wilderness, their lifelong dream is just three simple wordsā€¦ Have a choice."
These three words all the more juxtaposes Ying Lei's freedom to choose his identity, against every other character who faces this fate of not having a choice.
The Lie Demon, unable to say her true feelings until her moment of death, and Fei, who shares similar sentiments as Ying Lei about the mortal world,
"I'm a beast of calamity, I don't deserve to live in the mortal world. But I really like the bright lights, the liveliness and happiness, and the prosperity here." (Ep 13)
And Zhao Yuanzhou, where even in the same Episode 17, echoes Ying Lei's words,
"If this world gave me life to be manipulated by malicious energy, then I'd rather die."
Same words, but a different way out. Or there isn't one at all.
Ying Lei is the only one whose fate hasn't been carved out in stone for him. Even after Ying Zhao's death, he is still able to leave Kunlun Mountain and rejoin the team because he has the support of other Mountain Gods watching over the temple. He is by no means a pampered and spoiled person but he swims in a wealth of freedom. His bubbly, charming and affectionate personality is a physical manifestation of his unburdened self, unbeholden to any ending, except for the one that he wants.
And yet, he chooses a life with the group of people who never have had the option to choose what and who they want to be. Wen Xiao, the Baize Goddess; Zhao Yuanzhao, the vessel of malicious energy; Bai Jiu, determined to bring his mother back; Pei Sijing, the forced breadwinner of her family's martial heritage. To show his determination to be with this group, he never again dons the mature get-up (full sleeved robes and long hair) - his representation of maturing and accepting his responsibility as a Mountain God - after returning back to the Mortal Realm. Rather, he dons the get-up he first roamed the Mortal Realm with (or similar), metaphorically putting aside all that celestial burden in exchange for the friends that he desires. Just who in the group can as easily shed their very roots and history? His precious freedom to choose ironically makes him the outsider in a group whose only wishes are to be able to choose.
He gets along with the team, but no matter how many times he ties the knot of fate around them, these people were never his fate to begin with. Fate found the rest of them and demanded they be bound. Ying Lei wrestles that rope of fate, trying to get in, albeit with rejection. The narrative demonstrates this:
The team was initially formed without him, and he joined later them of his own accord - his own choice - while the others literally were forced to sign a death contract to be together. In the later episodes, his affection for Bai Jiu is often overshadowed by Bai Jiu's respect for Zhuo Yichen. He also continually tries to get both Bai Jiu and Zhuo Yichen's approval - head pats, anyone? Zhao Yuanzhou doesn't trust him to look after the dragon scale. In their conversation with Bing Yi, their team count is five, instead of six. His closest companions within the team are each other's confidants.
Even at his very end, the narrative still denies him a fate with them. He dies for Bai Jiu who is the only person he loves wholly, and fades away before Bai Jiu wakes from his coma. Neither gets to say goodbye. Bai Jiu who genuinely mourns his death, dies for Yichen. In a story where the cyclical nature of fate runs deep, there is no thread of fate that leads back to him. There is no resolution or reciprocation for Ying Lei's soul and sacrifice. Every thread is cut and never retied, no matter how he tries. Siheng has Sijing left to remember him. Yichen keeps Baijiu close to his heart. Wen Xiao and Yichen wait for Zhao Yuanzhou to return. But no one truly reminisces Ying Lei. The only people to do that are dead.
Ying Lei's tragedy lies in his freedom to choose. In a world where most fate is predetermined and choice is a scarcity, his death is all the more painful as every act is a conscious choice toward an unknown end. He carries a burden after all - the burden of writing his own story. And he braved each step with that brilliant smile of his.
ꈑēˆ±čæ™äøŖäø–ē•Œę›“多 又如何 So what if I love this world even more? č¶Šå¹³å‡”č¶Šé•æ久 The more ordinary it is, the longer it lasts ꜈äŗ®č·Ÿē€ęˆ‘ē‚¹å¤“ The moon nods along with me ē®€ē®€å•å•å…„ę¢¦ēš„äŗŗ꜀ęø©ęŸ” Those who step into dreams simply are the gentlest 分äøęø…ēœ¼ę³Ŗ和酒 ēœŸč®©äŗŗęŒ å¤“ This inability to distinguish between tears and wine, really makes one scratch their head ꜈äŗ®å’Œå°ē‹—é»˜é»˜č·Ÿęˆ‘čµ° The moon and a puppy walk with me in silence å²ęœˆä»Žäøåœē•™ Time never stops once 少幓也äøå›žå¤“ This youth also never turns back ä»–ęŠŠę•…ä¹”å’Œēˆ±ē•™åœØčŗ«åŽ He leaves behind both his hometown and love

Bucket!
you did encourage the camera angles, soooo
this is more opinion but there are some facts in here if you count the mild history of cameras in F1 as facts.
F1ā€™s main problem with cameras (imo) is that they really want to ā€œkeep people in the actionā€ which theyā€™ve done by keeping cars in the direct center of your screen all the times, and putting cameras at sections with wider angles of view. This is nice, because the sort of limited camera angles from before made it occasionally difficult to keep track of race action.
HOWEVER
They sort of swapped to this wide, central shot style, instead of implementing it. One thing F1 did really well was letting you feel and understand the power of these cars, even through a TV screen. The camera whipped around to follow Raikkonen absolutely sending his car through Eau Rouge (absolute madlad btw) or the Schumacher brothers chasing each other through that wide right hander in Silverstone. The cars felt fast, they felt close, and a lot of that was due to the very stationary cameras relatively close to the track, and the fact that the operators didnā€™t seem to feel the need to adjust the zoom angle every microsecond to keep the car perfectly centered on your TVs screen. Like sure, I couldnā€™t see all the pretty sponsor logos, or maybe I didnā€™t always catch the honestly fascinating front or rear wings of the 2000s (next up on the fact list?), but that was part of the magic. The cars were screaming past so quickly you could hardly keep them in frame at all.
This started going away in the 2010s. By 2020 it was nearly gone completely, and watching races just felt sort of stagnant: no matter how fast I knew Hamilton and Vettel were throwing themselves through every corner, they always seemed to be moving at the same speed.
But things are starting to change.
New cams like the ones on front wings, on/inside driver helmets, and the saving grace of the mid-season camera development upgrades (lol), the gyro cam. These are SO COOL, and the gyro cam in particular feels FAST, I think because the mildly warped field of view makes the motion blur heavier while still keeping that crisp video quality weā€™ve come to expect from modern cameras, combined with the defining feature of it rolling with the horizon as the car experienced angle changes itself.
Also just angles in general, like the ones at the Monaco pool chicane and tunnel, and some of the ones at Singapore this year, they just bring back that close-to-the-track action.
Interestingly, if you go back and watch recordings from the 1970s and 80s, youā€™ll notice they actually had some of these. The onboard cameras back then were genuinely exciting, and I watch them all the time. Iā€™d recommend that any F1 fan do that, even if just to see the evolution of driving styles and cars.Ā
I think F1 is finally listening to fans saying they liked the more stationary cameras, the wild onboards, stuff like that. You can feel the speed of the cars like back in the 2000ā€™s and early 2010ā€™s.
mildly considering starting a bucket blog ngl but also the anon-bucket-question is fun what do you think
BUCKET!!!!
this is really cool. i had not thought about the camera angles before but now that you mention it....yeah youre fucking RIGHT!!!! and yes the gyro camera was fucking cool i loved it it was wonderful and insane.
alternatively i like sometimes when the camera angle shows one of the cameras on the edge of the screen WHIPPING around to capture the car (tho a shame that we dont get that angle).
10/10 as usual. i patiently await more facts :)

DAY 7: Summer!!!
Kiran summer alt real!!! Much like the Day of Devotion alt, I was actually toying with a design for this a while back, but never got around to cleaning it up. Which means its bonus sketch time! Yippee!
Tumblr media
So this started as me wanting to draw that summer Sharena design after seeing xander-wolk take a crack at it, which you can find here. It was meant to be more of a warm up sketch but next thing I knew all four of my guys are on screen.
Tumblr media
Then I explored the outfit a little more. Debated giving Kiran more dangly bits. But I ultimately settled on what usually works when drawing Kiran; throwing a coat on it.

So this:

Which allows vecna to do this:

Right? Rightā€¦ā€¦ā€¦. So then this:
Tumblr media
Leads to this:
Tumblr media
Which leads to:
???????????????? šŸ‘€šŸ‘€šŸ‘€šŸ‘€šŸ‘€
Will has had powers.
#will has powers#no - he had powers. he probably displayed them when he got taken in to the upside down. and vecna wanted those powers. so he took them.#this also opens up to the possibility he could get them back somehow. with el it was through memories of her mom when she was born. love.#when she relived her younger self opening the gate for the first time through the power of love#so Will could get his back through strong feelings of love. just saying.#stranger things predictions#stranger things theories#byler#byler tumblr#so the cool kids can find this šŸ˜Œ#I HAVE ANOTHER THING TO SAY!!! Els powers are strong from negative emotions - hatred. anger. vengeance.#but theyā€™re even more powerful from feelings of love - familial and platonic love (mama. hopper. max. etc)#so if Will did show his powers to vecna (accidentally) when he got taken then those would have been from his most common negative emotion#fear#El is anger. hatred. will is fear. anxiety.#so will will get his powers to their fullest strength only with Love. romantic love. feeling wanted. useful.#familial/friend love was something El needed in her life and she against all odds managed to find it#she got the love she desperately needed and deserved (not romantic like the Melvinā€™s seem to think)#will has all that in buckets. he has friends who love him. the best mom and brother anyone could wish for. but he feels unworthy of love.#feels like all the bad things that happened to him were deserved. so him receiving and accepting what he desperately needs and deserves#will fully unlock his powers - if he has them.#thank you for coming to my Ted talk
