And my thing STILL is that as carmen gets a stronger sense of her past and better connections with her friends and allies the need/desire for Gray in her life doesn't decrease and dissapate, it INCREASES and is refined. All while constantly being more sincerely layered in romantic tones as the show goes on.

Day 28: Love
Grief is a friend.
Odette, as a character, is all about Life and Death, Love and Grief. How they are the same coin, how they’re vital cycles. Knowing Death awaits you at the end of your life doesn’t mean you don’t live while you can.
Knowing that grief will be a common house guest doesn’t stop us from grasping love with both hands, shouldn’t stop us from loving as loudly and proudly and fully as we can.
When you meet grief for the first time it is easy to think of it as an antagonist. But grief has always been your friend.

do you guys think i should make a faire (etsy for wholesale)……. wholesaling was on my goal list for the year but in a “email local businesses” way not a “put my stuff on a marketplace” way, especially since faire takes a 15% commission & has other fees…. i don’t have the kind of inventory to list a ton of stuff on there but i could start with a few things and see how it goes…. i can stop doing it if i decide it’s not worth it… it would be easier than sending a lot of emails or making a wholesale packet….

how to make a character who sucks so bad and nobody likes him but he is genuinely a good protagonist (good as in interesting, maybe on a rare day good as in decent but also, just like, an incredible jackass) . i need to make him worse i need to make him MEANER!
#i think the key to getting this kind of character right is that he can't try to be anybody's boss#that's not the fun and engaging kind of jackass that's just reminding the reader of all the bosses they've hated in their time#the engaging and likeable Guy Who Sucks So Bad is a loner who might CLAIM that he will take over the group or whatever and lead#but never actually has any intentions of doing so because part of the things he sucks re: is responsibility of any kind#he does however know that leaders dont like other people horning in on their territory so he will say things like#i'm gonna wreck your shit and then all your lackeys will follow ME! ouahahahahaha . despite having zero plans to follow up with that#the ideal engaging asshole protagonist is a rebel without a good cause: maybe he has a sad backstory; maybe he's just a dick#but if there's one thing about him you can count on it's that he is Opposed To Shit. doesnt matter what it is his primary entertainment#is picking a fight with it for no reason and then saying what the fuck ever i didn't care about it anyway (he didn't)#ideally this is all done in such a way that he is SEXY . but you'd never want to hang with him because he is deeply obnoxious#he is not bossy. he is not controlling. he is maybe even a bit of a wife guy except he hates everyone else and wants to make their day wors#because making someone else's day worse makes HIS day better . the ideal wife for him is the one from ordinary day with peanuts#by shirley jackson#and i have GOT to figure out a way to engineer this guy without copying examples of my favorite versions of him wholesale#i have the scaffolding. but because of my own confrontation-averse tendencies#im terribly concerned that i will never be able to actually make him the asshole he was born to be#q

Can't sleep so I'm thinking about my guy George and I'm just. I'm getting really off my hinges about this man.
He's a police detective in 2005, he's 53 years old, he's gay, and he's been compartmentalising his life since he was like 10. His parents never knew he was gay because he decided as a kid that they were Never finding out. He's got no idea if they might have accepted him, and no way of knowing because they've both been dead for years. He's still trying to make his soldier father proud of him. He was raised to value rules and structures and service above all else. He's made every major decision in his life, from what he studied at university to joining the army to [redacted] to becoming a detective based in at least some part on how well it will help him to hide who he is, because if the truth comes out he won't be able to serve and then what use is he? He's been actively pursuing relationships with men since his teens despite all that and the only member of his family who's ever known is his little sister. He's been living with another man for a decade, a man his work colleagues have seen him work with professionally time and time again, and not one of them suspects a thing. He's spent that decade happier than he ever was before but he's also spent it slowly, without consciously meaning to, cutting himself off from anywhere he can truly be himself but inside his own home. He's gotten so good at hiding that he's stopped noticing that it hurts. He lies as naturally as breathing, and like breathing he rarely notices he's doing it, and his colleagues think he's an unflinchingly honest man. He's built such a wall through the middle of his life and his self that sometimes even he forgets he isn't. When he stopped liking the man he'd become because of [redacted], he found himself a career in the police where he had no choice but to go back to the old familiar lies, because at least they were simple. He wants to be a good man, but he needs to be useful.
And when eventually all his secrets get forced into the open and his life starts to collapse around him, he's almost, treacherously relieved.
Also he chews his pens, talks with an incurably posh accent, named his cat 'the Usual Suspect', is well aware his sister is significantly cooler than he is, tolerates his boyfriend stealing his shirts with quiet amusement, has never quite managed to shake the habit of calling people 'darling' although he's careful not to do it at work, and once in the 80s did a very well received drag routine to the song 'Killer Queen' which he's thought of as his song ever since.
He contains multitudes and I love him dearly, and I really need to get his story properly written so I can inflict him and his mess and all the other stuff he's got going on that I'm deliberately not mentioning because of spoilers on all of you.

ahhh the woes of when some rando walks into the shop at work wanting to sell me something to sell i the gift shop out of the blue.
like bruh…this shoulda been an email.
i’m not sure which is worse tho…the ones that come in completely unprepared (like…motherfuckers can’t even find pictures of their product in their photos app because they don’t bother to organize that shit into a specific folder), or the ones that just show up with a big box of their shit and a pushy attitude.
either way, they both suck and i usually ghost them once they finally leave.

ok i need to just get this post out of the way. but i think of the things that so odd to me about season of the haunted is that like……season of the lost was already about grief. that was the whole point of lost, and it was really well written: the stakes were clear (and relatively small/personal, which is easier in seasonal type storytelling than oh my god they’re gonna take over THE WHOLE EARTH), there’s an absolutely FASCINATING web of parallels between the main characters of mara, ikora, savathun, crow, and petra, and the season shows how grief affects each of them separately and in connected ways, as well as being the core issue of the season. it’s good. it coheres.
in haunted, we have three protagonists that are largely disconnected (i know they all like. technically know each other, but it doesn’t particularly feel like it), facing three VERY different issues, all to take down a main villain that is only-kind-of connected to one of the three. there’s so much less cohesion, and then on top of that it tries to tell a complicated story about recovery from trauma in ten minute long bite size chunks once a week. lost also keeps all of the characters AND the respective people their trauma is related to within the frame of the game - mara with uldren, petra with mara and uldren, ikora and crow with osiris. those are all characters that you know!!! sav with xivu is the only slight unknown, and we’ve at least been exposed to xivu a little bit before, even if we don’t know her as well. i love safiyah as a character, and she adds a lot of depth to zavala, but taking on the burden of introducing a previously unknown backstory and character, seeing a character struggle with it, and seeing them overcome it all within a short time frame is a LOT to do at once. caital and ghaul are much the same way because sure we know ghaul but he’s like the worlds most nothing villain.
i think it’s just interesting to see two seasons that are fairly close together tackle very similar concepts in very different ways yk?? i honestly think it comes down to the old ‘show don’t tell’ adage - in lost, we see mara had kept recordings of the stories uldren used to tell saved in a hidden vault. in haunted zavala says he really misses his wife. ykwim??

As a semi-regular cane user this is VERY good.
I'll also second that quite a few of us have multiple canes for multiple occasions. I have three adjustible canes, and one wooden one, and I have a favourite out of all of those and get a little sad when I can't use it. (Switch Sticks are amazing).
Even adjustible canes don't always adjust to the exact right height you need, and if you've been using a cane for a long time and suddenly have to change into a different brand or make (or just want to make a different fashion statement), you can feel that centimetre of difference!
Because I don't need the cane 24/7, I often like adjustible so I can fold it in half while tackling stairs (for me stairs are easier to just take one at a time, currently). I get really angry with a handbag hanging off one shoulder, so I need a big strap so it can go around both shoulders and won't keep sliding off my arm while I'm using the cane. Sometimes it's very inconvenient to be shopping with a cane and a handbag and want to grab something at the same time.
Also if you're clumsy, you will still accidentally hit yourself (or others) with the cane while you're walking! And my favourite - when you step on the rubber stopper and it comes off and then you have to put it on again.
Finally I have hEDS, rheumatoid arthritis, and other joint issues, including RSI in both wrists, so even with good posture and gait and oversight by a physiotherapist, I still get wrist issues and elbow issues simply from long-term use. They're minor and treatable, but they can still happen if you have other joint issues.
Also, people are often terribly ableist towards younger people with canes, at least where I live (Western Australia). I started needing to intermittently use a walking stick when I was around 21, and noticed that on public transport other folks would stand for people in wheelchairs, pregnant folks, elderly folks and basically *anyone other than the younger person with a cane.* It is really quite incredible how dismissed folks are with walking sticks. It might be slightly better now.
It amuses me when people are like 'a person wouldn't use their cane as a weapon.' Yes, some of us would. Not all of us have the same kind of issues re: using a pain, and some of us have *very* good one-leg balance. I 100% believe in using my cane as a weapon in exchange for causing more pain through that leg. This wouldn't work for anyone who has a major instability issue, but as OP pointed out, anyone who needs more than 20% weight-bearing will likely be using something different (or causing themselves massive arm/joint/shoulder/spine problems until they realise they need to be using something different).
The only thing is I can't run and use a cane as a weapon, or walk quickly and do it. So I'll have to stand and swing that fucker into someone's face should I ever be threatened or have to stop someone else from being hurt. Also given how often I trip myself and other people with it by accident, I imagine it's very good for this too. e.e
As a writer I fully prepare to take advantage of this one day, lmao.
A general cane guide for writers and artists (from a cane user, writer, and artist!)
Disclaimer: Though I have been using a cane for 6 years, I am not a doctor, nor am I by any means an expert. This guide is true to my experience, but there are as many ways to use a cane as there are cane users!
This guide will not include: White canes for blindness, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as I have no personal experience with these.
This is meant to be a general guide to get you started and avoid some common mishaps/misconceptions, but you absolutely should continue to do your own research outside of this guide!
Tumblr media
The biggest recurring problem I've seen is using the cane on the wrong side. The cane goes on the opposite side of the pain! If your character has even-sided pain or needs it for balance/weakness, then use the cane in the non-dominant hand to keep the dominant hand free. Some cane users also switch sides to give their arm a rest!
A cane takes about 20% of your weight off the opposite leg. It should fit within your natural gait and become something of an extension of your body. If you need more weight off than 20%, then crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair is needed.
Putting more pressure on the cane, using it on the wrong side, or having it at the wrong height will make it less effective, and can cause long term damage to your body from improper pressure and posture. (Hugh Laurie genuinely hurt his body from years of using a cane wrong on House!)
Tumblr media
(an animated GIF of a cane matching the natural walking gait. It turns red when pressure is placed on it.)
When going up and down stairs, there is an ideal standard: You want to use the handrail and the cane at the same time, or prioritize the handrail if it's only on one side. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg and follow with the cane and hurt leg together. When going down stairs you lead with the cane, then the good leg, and THEN the leg that needs help.
Realistically though, many people don't move out of the way for cane users to access the railing, many stairs don't have railings, and many are wet, rusty, or generally not ideal to grip.
In these cases, if you have a friend nearby, holding on to them is a good idea. Or, take it one step at a time carefully if you're alone.
Now we come to a very common mistake I see... Using fashion canes for medical use!
Tumblr media
(These are 4 broad shapes, but there is INCREDIBLE variation in cane handles. Research heavily what will be best for your character's specific needs!)
The handle is the contact point for all the weight you're putting on your cane, and that pressure is being put onto your hand, wrist, and shoulder. So the shape is very important for long term use!
Knob handles (and very decorative handles) are not used for medical use for this reason. It adds extra stress to the body and can damage your hand to put constant pressure onto these painful shapes.
The weight of a cane is also incredibly important, as a heavier cane will cause wear on your body much faster. When you're using it all day, it gets heavy fast! If your character struggles with weakness, then they won't want a heavy cane if they can help it!
This is also part of why sword canes aren't usually very viable for medical use (along with them usually being knob handles) is that swords are extra weight!
However, a small knife or perhaps a retractable blade hidden within the base might be viable even for weak characters.
Tumblr media
Bases have a lot of variability as well, and the modern standard is generally adjustable bases. Adjustable canes are very handy if your character regularly changes shoe height, for instance (gotta keep the height at your hip!)
Canes help on most terrain with their standard base and structure. But for some terrain, you might want a different base, or to forego the cane entirely! This article covers it pretty well.
Many cane users decorate their canes! Stickers are incredibly common, and painting canes is relatively common as well! You'll also see people replacing the standard wrist strap with a personalized one, or even adding a small charm to the ring the strap connects to. (nothing too large, or it gets annoying as the cane is swinging around everywhere)
Tumblr media
(my canes, for reference)
If your character uses a cane full time, then they might also have multiple canes that look different aesthetically to match their outfits!
When it comes to practical things outside of the cane, you reasonably only have one hand available while it's being used. Many people will hook their cane onto their arm or let it dangle on the strap (if they have one) while using their cane arm, but it's often significantly less convenient than 2 hands. But, if you need 2 hands, then it's either setting the cane down or letting it hang!
For this reason, optimizing one handed use is ideal! Keeping bags/items on the side of your free hand helps keep your items accessible.
Tumblr media
When sitting, the cane either leans against a wall or table, goes under the chair, or hooks onto the back of the chair. (It often falls when hanging off of a chair, in my experience)
When getting up, the user will either use their cane to help them balance/support as they stand, or get up and then grab their cane. This depends on what it's being used for (balance vs pain when walking, for instance!)
That's everything I can think of for now. Thank you for reading my long-but-absolutely-not-comprehensive list of things to keep in mind when writing or drawing a cane user!
Happy disability pride month! Go forth and make more characters use canes!!!
