Mclaren is p1 in WCC

Lando and Oscar both have 2 wins each

Lando is p2 @ 254 points and 59 points behind p1

Oscar is p4 @ 222 points (he only scored 97 in the full 2023 season)

Car is seemingly (I refuse to jinx) competitive at every track

Lando is tied with Max for most podium finishes (10)

If you had tried to tell me this is where we’d be in Bahrain this year i’d have never believed you. I criticize Mclaren a lot (and rightfully so) but the progress that has been made this year, let alone from Bahrain 2023 is astounding. While I fully believe that with better strategy and decision making Mclaren could’ve had p1 in the WCC much earlier and Lando (or Oscar tbh) wouldn’t just be having a shot at winning the WDC I have to give some credit where it is due. I cannot wait for 2025 🧡

whether you’re team lando or team oscar, you’ve got to understand that mclaren made mistakes today that could definitely cost them the championship. while I understand that the constructors is their main priority, they are also in the battle for the drivers championship (perspective? but I think so) and it is cruel to both of the drivers to send them into a race with a “battle it out” kinda mindset. It does no one any good, and if they continue you like this it might even ruin the relationship between the their drivers (and I fear we all know how will end - tragically). lando, whether you like it or not, should be mclarens main priority right now. they have the chance to win both the constructors AND drivers championships (something which they haven’t done in over a decade) I just don’t understand where their minds are at. but who knows maybe I’m wrong and there is some weird method to the madness which I’m currently blinded from. sorry I’m just utterly flabbergasted right now…

wanted to take a second to acknowledge that this is my first real F1 season on tumblr.com and it has been a privilege and an honor to serve with you. From the very first breaking news graphic displaying the most random simulation news imaginable (Lewis in a Ferrari? piastri gaining more positions in races doesn’t mean he’s performing better than norris or more consistently. he’s 13-3 down in quali, you are always going to gain more places if you start further back! norris has consistently outperformed him this season, which is kinda clear from the gaps between them at the end of races - norris has finished more than 20 seconds ahead of him quite a few times this season. piastri’s biggest lead to him was abt 10 seconds and that was when norris didn’t put under the sc at jeddah.

norris is getting team orders because he is the one who has performed well enough and consistently enough to be in the championship fight. oscar hasn’t. simple as that.

the sheet will also show you the positions norris has lost. you gain more positions if you start further back, but you really aren't supposed to lose more positions if you start ahead! norris makes too many errors that cost him positions. simple as that.

and speaking of consistently outperforming,

i personally don't think what norris needs is team orders. what he needs is to perform better- and not just in comparison to oscar. the bulk of his point loss is because of stupid errors and, not to sound like a broken record, but calling for team orders instead of improvement on his end is like slapping a bandaid on an open wound. will it work? maybe. is there a bigger problem that needs to be resolved? absolutely. is it unfair for oscar to be the bandaid at his own expense in this scenario while the gaping wound goes unaddressed? goes without saying!!

go back and read that paragraph three more times because i keep repeating the same notion but i don't know why you have elected to ignore or misinterpret.

everyone hates team orders yadda yadda but most people will shut up when they're justified. in this case, it's unjustified. if you lose positions in 47% of your races, you are not consistent or strong. if you NEED team orders to fight a championship and cannot carry your own weight, you do not deserve it. simple enough i hope.

anyway, please stop sending anon asks about norris jesus fucking christ. it's cowardly and pointless. if you want to share your opinions, you have a blog for that. if you want to have a conversation (and i doubt this is the case :p) dms exist. but i don't think there's a conversation to be had given. vague gesturing. the nature of this exchange

The only thing McLaren needs to review is strategy. A win by a 22 second lead is a mastered car. As a RBR fan even I can say there is no reason Zandvoort should not have been a front row lock out in qualifying and finishing.

They are so close to getting it all! The only thing that will stop them is strategy.

I think one thing a lot us often forget and should probably remember is to show these drivers a little more grace. These are young people who have insanely high pressure jobs that require them to drive at some pretty life threatening speeds every other weekend. And sometimes they're gonna make mistakes. Or fail. Or even be kind of an asshole while doing it. But honestly I don't think any of us is beyond being a little bit of a cunt at times while driving at 200mph. Or even right after.

Another thing I see people doing a lot is comparing these drivers to Lewis Hamilton. Like yes, he is calm while racing. Yes, he doesn't lose his cool like the others do sometimes. But GUYS. This didn't naturally to him either. He's had a career more than TWICE as long as some of these guys. He's had two decades to train himself not to lose his cool. You're seeing him now but in doing so you're doing a disservice to all the time and effort he put into getting there. So the next time you see Lando be an asshole because he was chasing his 2nd win or Max be a little shit because he thought he'd been dealt a bad hand, just remember, show them some grace.

A lot of people are going to be VERY frustrated with Lando and Oscar for different reasons but the boys drove a great race. I have many thoughts (Mostly about the Mclaren boys):

Lando had a great start and Oscar had a BEAUTIFUL overtake. I can’t blame Oscar for trying to win and I can’t blame Lando for being disappointed with p3.

Unfortunate that they both had to go with a 2 stop and that gave Charles the opportunity to grab that win. There are many more races to come and I’m sure many victories.

I LOVE that Mclaren let them race but today should’ve looked a lot different and Mclaren managed to throw away a 1-2 yet again due to strategy and not being able to make difficult decisions. I know Andrea Stella doesn’t want a number 1 driver and in 90% of cases I agree. But in the context of the WDC there should have been a priority to maximize a points finish for Lando AT LEAST for today especially with how far down rb were. Oscar absolutely drove brilliantly but there is a 0% chance of him winning the WDC this year- there is a (while unlikely) chance Lando could win this year and I can’t help but be disappointed that Mclaren have basically thrown that away today just because they want to seem “fair”. I can’t help but feel there may be some double standards in place at Mclaren.
