I love Chiyo- and I kind of headcanon her as a Witch of the Woods (Sands???) archetype- a bitter old woman who has sacrificed too much, experienced and committed more atrocities than anyone can imagine, and who knows the truth about what lies in the hearts of men to live among the villages anymore.

In my AU she's got a pretty dark backstory. Back in time when Villages were just getting established, women weren't allowed to be shinobi in the same capacity as men. There was too much warring and death among the clans to risk women, so they were only ever allowed to serve as spies or medics. (Chiyo started off as a medic).

And like any military/fascist dictatorship, serving the state was more important than anything else- so women who were kunoichi were given missions to steal and return with powerful bloodlines. Even before villages, this was a common fear among clans (which is why so many of them have protective measures and inbreed/arrange matches very carefully).

Chiyo was one such woman, who took a X-rated mission in her youth because she was told it would 'serve her nation'. There was a powerful bloodline whose Kekkei Genkai could harden sand to something akin to Steel- something Suna very desperately wanted.

Chiyo succeeded in her mission, but despite the veneer of 'serving your nation', when she returned, she was considered, in her words, "Just another whore."

Then when her son didn't manifest the bloodline- it was worse, but Chiyo was happy because that meant her son was HERS. (This is when she met Enji, and he saved her son's life at great cost- so Chiyo owes him a blood/life debt.)

Then the war came, and they needed women to fight so now serving the nation meant something different, and Chiyo became a full fledged 'shinobi' and turned her healing towards poison and death- especially when she had to fight the Salamander.

Then she sealed Gaara and that was the atrocity straw that broke the camel's back and she dipped out Suna and retired to an oasis. She's still a healer, but adamantly refuses to serve shinobi.

ok so maybe I’m totally delusional, that’s also fair. But like,

they chose to make them look into a mirror, something made clear from the bottom; would this suggest Alfons has some sort of “upper hand” or advantage, as he is the one with the mirror curse

for the most part, the background is blurred out, so only Elbie and Alfons are 100% clear in the reflection — this could be symbolism of how much pure trust Elbie puts in Alfons

like to Elbie, Alfons is his world

another way you can tell Elbie heavily trusts Alfons (maybe too much) is look at how close their faces are: Alfons is leaning in from above, and Elbie basically leaning back in from below

now this may be because they are “master and attendant” but Elbie is not fully clothed, while Alfons is. The lack of clothes can symbolize vulnerability, and on the other hand, being fully clothed can represent being closed off

basically, it seems that Elbie may be overly dependent (overly trusting) on Alfons. They said in the relationship chart that they were “childhood friends” and “master and attendant” but, it’s probably deeper and more nuanced and/or twisted than that. And that nuance, I think, is captured in this official art

the pinned blue butterflies in the background are beautiful, but symbolically could represent feeling “trapped” or, at the very least, not free

there’s the juxtaposition of Elbie’s kind of sad?? expression and the bright, sunny background, and Alfons is probably plotting something. I don’t know what, but he likely is, like just look at that smile-

the robes are truly a hit amongst the team aka we dont have to use our brains and we just put on a robe its fantastic, mackie maffhew and nosey are on absolutely onboard unsurprisingly

Vienna 1989/90 giving me that tasty Tuggoffelees juice at the end of Mistoffelees' number. Love how Misto just spins Tugger away. It also actually reminds me a lot of a very similar duo spin dance at the end of this number that happens in Zurich with Lindsay Chambers' Misto, but instead it's with Munkustrap rather than Tugger.

And in Zurich's case, well, let's say that this Misto has a very different experience to Valentin's (who reminds me a lot of Tim Scott's Misto, especially with the makeup), and Munk is more showing he has accepted him fully.

@absolutehumandisaster - hope you don't mind me tagging you as I feel you'd be interested in my "little" tag ramble/thoughts on Valentin's vs Chambers' Mistos and how Valentin's is Chambers' Misto once he is fully accepted and has grown exponentially in confidence by the next Jellicle Ball.
