Time and Time Again comes back tonight!
Thank you all for being so patient with me, I know it was a long hiatus.
My health was struggling, my arm was (is) hurting, and I decided it wasn't worth it. I'd rather be slow!
So thank you for giving me that grace, and I hope you'll be there with me for the rest of the series.
#like straight up. it's not worth it. idc how many people get mad at me#i would rather work fuckin. anything else than maintain this impossible schedule and keep hurting myself#if thats what it takes to do comics full time. then i can't do comics full time. simple as that!#i hope that for my next work i can have a healthier schedule and still make this work as my job#but if not. I'm never going back#i can't do it. 3 more years at this pace will take my ability to draw#anyways. its really good!!!#like genuinely i can feel a marked improvement in my skills#which is WILD!!! And I'm extremely happy about that!!!#just one more step into being better built to give people the quality stories they deserve.#ive not properly had the fire under my ass to finish stuff up but. its fine.#like i said? not worth it.#if i have to pause again then ill pause again. like i literally simply can not my body can't handle it#so. hopefully stuff goes smoothly but whatever happens will happen#whatever will be will be#i keep getting distracted lmfao#im excited about it coming back#and also. will. probably be distracting myself...#other creators dont read their comments. I'm like straight up not capable of that LMAOOO#i check for comments like all the time#love seeing em. love reading people's thoughts about my work#it makes me a better writer and keeps me connected to what matters most. which is my audience!#so i dont regret doing that but also. jts extremely distracting#i get straight up nothing done on big update days#cause im in the comments absolutely massive eyed refreshing.#this sounds obsessive. and it is. no jk#its just fun and keeps me in touch w peoples perception which helps me learn to write better#plus people are nice and ask me questions that i wanna answer#or if someone is being an ass. then i wanna tell them to leave (cause i cant block people) cause i consider it my responsibility#time and time again

T/N: Okay, so, this is one of those chapters where the author makes mistakes in linguistics (but she’s trying, guys, she’s trying!). She writes “prasinon” as “prase” for some reason, and I took the liberty to fix it myself when translating.
Connecting Chrysoprase
Jewelry Etranger sat inconspicuously at Ginza 7-choume. The store owner, Richard, was the possessor of a beauty that you couldn’t think was from this world, but no matter how beautiful he was, once half a year had passed, you would get used to it. And as I got used to him, the questions also surfaced.
“Hey, Richard, don’t you have any favorite foods other than sweets? Do you eat ramen or anything like that?”
Mr. Richard Ranashinha de Vulpian looked at me with scrutinizing blue eyes. Sitting on the red sofa, he had been observing the contents of a large jewel box, holding them up over his head against the morning light shining in from the window.
“I find difficult to figure the aim of the question. Why ramen? I have had meals with you numerous times. I eat anything without likes or dislikes.”
“I know. It’s not like it’s limited to just ramen, but you don’t eat that kind of stuff much, do you?”
Like chives. Or garlic. Or grilled meat dripping with juices.
I knew that this didn’t suit his image. He was a man whose features seemed to have accidentally come out of a dream world. If he told me that he could live off eating department store sweets and pink roses, he could probably have me seriously convinced up to about 70%. That was exactly why I would feel like searching for a gap.
As I was about to ask if he understood this logic, Richard replied curtly with a clay doll-like face, “What ill intentions.”
That was true. I wasn’t some obsessive follower of an idol’s personal life or anything. Richard hit bull’s-eye with the deduction that I “probably ate ramen yesterday”. For some reason, things got awkward. I was in a position where it was better to retreat for a while. Time to change the subject.
“What stone is that? Looks like candy and it’s pretty cute.”
“A type of chalcedony. They are in the same category as crystals. In particular, this one with a milky apple-green color is called chrysoprase.
“Ah~...”
What Richard was pinching with his bare hands - because it was safer to touch it with bare skin rather than wearing gloves, he said, as it wouldn’t cause any damage - was a pale green, round stone. It had low transparency, was cut en cabochon and looked like an old-style candy.
“W-What was it again? The name. Chry...?”
“‘Chrysoprase’,” Richard repeated for me.
How many times had something like this happened? The stone’s name was in a Western language. Basically, all of them were in katakana. My ears did register it, but I couldn’t memorize it in one go at all. Richard was a helpful person, so there were times when he wrote down the names in romaji and explained them to me, but I honestly couldn’t keep up with him. There were countless stones in this world.
“Chryso... aah, no good. It’s hard to memorize.”
“‘Chrysoprase’. It is said to be a stone that helps to harmonize and integrate personalities. Medieval European literature also mentions it as a stone that Alexander the Great loved.”
Alexander the Great. A person I had learned about in high school. Even I knew that name. The fact that a stone adored by a warlord who had long passed away was still loved by people of the current times was thought-provoking. The range of the gemstone world was broad. But, well, leaving that as that.
“How d’you memorize stones’ names? It’s not like you’ve got some test to do like in a history class...”
“Do you think anyone would buy goods from a trader who cannot even say their names?”
“I don’t, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s hard. There’s lots of types and they sound like magic spells. Like ‘Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte’. It wouldn’t be weird if you felt like cheating without a care in the world. You got any trick for memorizing them?”
“My compliments to you for being able to pronounce the official name of Sri Lanka’s capital. But I cannot praise the part about carelessly deceiving people. Once your reputation falls to earth, it does not recover so easily. To begin with, your perception of business in general is too lax for someone enrolled in the Faculty of Economics. I know you have the aspiration, but if you do not pair it to practical abilities and skills, you will be running idle. Shouldn’t you try to improve these skills once again so that you can avoid unnecessary hardships in the future? Instead of obsessing over finding out something unexpected about the shopkeeper from your part-time job.”
The arguments were so spot-on that I was at a loss for words. Even so, still with a slightly exasperated face, Richard continued to speak. Most likely, it was his gentle side’s turn from here on out.
“Still, you are right, I do have a trick. If I were to use the capital as an example, ‘Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte’ had its original name ‘Kotte’ being embellished with the title of ‘President Jayawardene’s Sacred City’. When you know the origin of it, doesn’t this line-up of katakana letters that only appears in magic spells turn into meaningful words?”
“So it had that kind of meaning? I see...”
“Is this time to be impressed? Do the same and discover the relatedness of all kinds of matters in your daily life. If you direct your eyes to the depths of your history without sticking to the surface, I guarantee that your world will broaden much more richly.”
“Then what about the chrysoprase of just now?”
As I took a stab at arousing his enthusiasm, the volubly beautiful shop owner smiled gorgeously. I felt that this guy would stay in a good mood forever just as long as I gave him sweets and let him talk about gems. And I liked Richard’s face the most when he was in his best mood.
“This word is taken from the Greek language. It consists of two separate words, ‘chrysos’ and ‘prasinon’. The meaning of chrysos is ‘gold’. The bright golden that can be seen showing through within the green was associated with gold. Prasinon means...”
What happened? His enunciation suddenly got bad.
When I urged him to continue, Richard looked down at the stone in his hand with a dull look and sighed a little. “The meaning of prasinon... comes close to plants such as chives or green onions.”
“Ooh—!”
As I clapped my hands together with an “all paths lead to ramen”, Richard made a face like he had just woken up from a nightmare. What is it? Please laugh.
“In any case, the mental attitude of trying to master something is commendable. I pray that your efforts will bear fruit.”
“Thanks, thanks. Well, will you eat ramen after all?”
Mr. Richard, the jeweler, looked at me with an awfully sharp gaze. What was that face? His facial expression looked like the usual nuance that he was growing fond of my foolishness had increased to about 30%. Did he intend to poke fun on me?
“Yes, yes, I will.”
“What do you prefer? Like miso or soy sauce?”
“A large helping of green onions and garlic. And even then, it is good to grate raw garlic and put in it.”
“That’s a pretty hardcore taste for someone who works with close-contact service business.”
“Which is why this is not something I can eat whenever. I eat it carefully by myself when I do not have to meet anyone the next day.”
As my eyes widened, the beautiful storekeeper raised his chin arrogantly. Did he want to say that this didn’t suit his image or had it just unfolded anew?
“How was it, did you enjoy the so-called ‘gap’?”
“No, it’s not like that’s the main goal.”
“Hah?”
“I can’t invite anyone for a French cuisine restaurant or a high-class sweets store, but if it’s a ramen shop, there’s lots of them near my university. If you like, why don’t we go eat together next time? They’re mostly shops that seem better to drop by wearing a t-shirt rather than a suit, but I wanna try chatting with you while eating this kind of junky stuff every now and then.”
“For you to discover a new unexpected thing about me, you mean?”
“I just wanna get along with you better.”
For an instant, Richard’s facial expression strained hard. What was up? His face looked like he hadn’t known better and bit a sour pickled plum or something. As I furrowed my brows, his blue eyes narrowed, looking glum, while he closed the jewel box with a click and stood up.
“Ah, show me more. It wasn’t nearly enough—”
“The chrysoprase is said to have the power to put the balance of mind and body in order, as well as make it spring up comfortably. Perhaps because its fresh grass color is a reminder of spring. Isn’t this stone unnecessary for you, since you are always in a festive mood?”
“Why’re you angry?”
“I am not.”
“Shouldn’t you take a better look at the chrysoprase?”
“Thank you for the unnecessary meddling.”
Leaving me with things to say, Richard disappeared into the back room. Was it that bad to invite him to a ramen shop? It wasn’t a good idea to let him stay angry, so I voluntarily prepared two cups of royal milk tea in the kitchenette. Having come out into the reception room, Richard said nothing more than the expected as he drank a tea that had a little more sugar in it than usual.
After the customer of that morning had gone home, Richard showed me the chrysoprase once again. Upon a better look, I understood the meaning of that naming, which I couldn’t think of as anything more than a mystery at first. Didn’t the people of ancient times think that this was a plant born from gold? The uneven surface was smooth and wavy like an organic body. Chrysoprase. Gold and green onions. Even though there were several gems in this world, I would probably never forget the name of this one. If I ever got to eat ramen with Richard someday, I would definitely bring up this stone.
“Do you remember that talk?” I would ask.

Hi!! Could I have a matchup please? I'm 18, pronouns she/her, I'm fine w any gender though I have a preference for males
If its of any relevance, physically I'm about 5'8 tall and on the chubby side, green eyes, brown hair (with blonde streaks) and I wear glasses
If you're into astrology/ mbti, I am a Sagittarius w both moon and rising in Cancer and I'm INFP
So I'm quite emotional lol. Usually very in touch with my emotions and quite perceptive of other's feelings as well. I have a huge saviours complex especially when it comes to feelings (i love helping others figure out their feelings, being a shoulder to cry on or even offering comforting hugs) but I try my best to keep it control cause I don't wanna be suffocating
On the outside I'd say I'm fairly organized, I keep my room clean and all of that, I'm a lil bit of a perfectionist but mentally I'm all over the place. I tend to get carried away by thoughts and emotions and end up procrastinating a lot; anxiety makes it all worse. In short, I suck at time management
To most people I may seem quiet and reserved but I actually really enjoy talking to people; I'm really insecure about not being funny or interesting enough tho. Around my friends I'm more relaxed but still have moments of self doubt
I can also be quite obsessive. If something really catches my interest I won't stop until I search all there is to know about it. For example I watched bnha, read the manga, the spin offs etc all in less than a month and now I'm indulging in fanart and fanfics because I need m o r e c o n t e n t hsbsb. I'm also that kind of person that listens to a new song they like on repeat until they hate it. Speaking of music, I can't say I have a taste lol. My fave genres are rock, pop and indie but I hear smth I like, I listen to it, whether its "high quality" music, basic or weird. Lately I've been listening to a lot of epicore which is literally the type of music thats used in fantasy and sci fi movies askfkdk
I like expressing myself through writing, singing and dancing but I really can't say I'm talented at either of those, it's all in good fun. I also enjoy reading (fiction, non-fic books bore me like hell; my fave genres are fantasy, sci fi and crime) but I haaate literature in school. I'm actually a bit of a math nerd and this year I'm starting uni, studying computer science!! Oh! I've also taken drama classes for 2 years (despite the fear I loved being on stage and plan on starting again once I'm done w the baccalaureate), I love playing D&D and while I woulnd't quite call myself a gamer, I love role playing video games. I'm also almost always down for any kind of multiplayer video games w friends although I have no experience
I'm not a sportive person, I go on walks or do a few exercises every now and then at home but I'm willing to try stuff out like a new sport or going to the gym w an s/o. I do plan on starting self defense classes soon and maybe taking up sword fighting (I love swords hehe)
Tbh I've never been in a relationship so I'm not really sure how I would act w an s/o, nor what I'm exactly looking for. I best express my affection through physical touch tho and that includes my friends so I'd like someone who isn't bothered or can get used to that (s/o would still receive the most hugs/ cuddles etc). I'm not that comfortable w the other love languages for friends and family, but I think I'd be a lot more eager to express my love through them for s/o. If I'm on the receiving end, my weakness is still physical touch :)) but I also need words of affirmation every now and then cause insecurities 🌠 and while I wouldn't ask for anything, especially objects, I am a hoarder and I'd keep any kind of gift like its a national treasure simply bc its from someone I love.
In addition, it doesn't really matter if s/o is more on the emotional or rational side a long as they dont invalidate my feelings; it angers me a lot and makes me feel even more insecure. I tend to isolate when I'm really really upset about something so I need a lil bit of pushing to talk abt it; I'm open to talk abt my feelings but I need the verbal confirmation that they care and wanna help, its not just cause they're being nice
Wow that is a lot of rambling jeez ajsjsjs sorry. Thank you so much if you've read throught that all and ty for the match up!!
Me and my wife literally having a ten minute debate on who we’d pair you with before I made my choice. Thanks for all the details and I hope you enjoy the match up!
I match you with Sero
Tumblr media
I feel he’s outgoing and extroverted enough to help you with your anxiety and always reassure you that you are good at things and he does love you, he’s also so chill and laid back that even if you were clingy he’d not mind, he’d embrace it, his chill nature would help balance you. He would help you feel grounded and have a ‘you don’t have to do it all now’ attitude but would happily help you out. You need help going to the store? He remembers the list you wrote, having trouble fitting in lunch while you study? He’ll come to your door with pizza.
He’s determined and outgoing but isn’t aggressively positive and loud either which I think is why I picked him over Kirishima for you.
+++
“Hey babe, whatcha reading?” Sero asked sitting next to you on the sofa, he handed you a soda which you gratefully took, not looking up from your laptop screen.
As soon as he was sat down comfortably your hand grabbed his, clasping your fingers together as you managed to tear your gaze away from the Wikipedia page which was still open. You blinked up at him and shook your head.
“Oh just something I learned about today and wanted to do some.. extra reading” you explained.
He nodded his head and drank his soda watching as your face lit up as you started to ramble about the topic, he didn’t really know much about it but the way you told him about everything, the way you happily expressed your interest towards the topic made him happy. He gave you his big grin when you finished.
“Sorry, I rambled..” You felt bad, you always felt nervous when you info dumped on people.
“Nah, it’s cool, I didn’t mind at all” he brought your hand up to his face and gave it a kiss, your face flushed at the gentle gesture which caused Sero to laugh playfully.
“Well, if your sure… I just wanted something to take my mind off chores”.
“It’s the weekend, you don’t have to rush anyway.. and if you don’t feel better by tomorrow I can help, you can wash the dishes and I’ll dry?” he suggested still peppering kisses on the back of your hand before you set your laptop down and crawled closer to him.
You nodded softly, that sounded a lot more manageable, you felt your anxiety settle down from a raging nagging feeling to something easier to tolerate. He was such a good influence on you. Sero set down his drink and wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer to his chest.
“The guys want to come over and say hi later, maybe get pizza… but I can tell them not tonight if you aren’t feeling it… maybe you can play that new game you got? I liked watching you play the other night” He suggested as he nuzzled your head, enjoying how your hair felt on his face.
“Maybe… can I give you an answer later?”
“Yeah, no rush babe”
You smiled softly feeling the lanky boy kiss the side of your head and listened as you carried on talking about the trivia of your current interest.

10.26.19
also known as - things i’ve learned about myself and the world around me as this year comes to a close.
first before i get into the #content i just want to say RIP to communities centered around long-form written content!! i really miss tumblr and the community around it, i suppose i could easily go to Reddit or something if i wanted to write long posts about my life but i really liked how everyone’s blog was their own platform to curate and didn’t have to be hyper glossy & filtered imgs of a curated idealistic life. (can you tell i’m not a big fan of instagram?)
ok moving on. this year threw me for a loop. in this one year of 2019 i’ve had 3 different jobs. spent a month just straight up unemployed with nothing to do. tried to break into concert production and kinda fell on my face for circumstances out of my control. this year taught me that if you don’t have a backup plan.... you gotta be quick enough on your feet to come up w one because things can get bad very quickly.
but i learned so many other things that don’t have to do with survival and disaster planning mode and i’d like to share at least 5 of them.
1. i learned how to really sit down and take an audit of my emotions. this is really all thanks to working with my therapist Emily who i am quite certain i would not still be here without. days are really, really tough sometimes and in moments where i have a lot going on, i tend to shove my emotions and needs into a dark corner of my brain so i can stay productive.
this is only sustainable for a verrrry short amount of time and the consequences are usually a breakdown. i’ve been telling people that my emotions are like toddlers. toddlers cannot and should not be abandoned for long periods of time and do deserve to have their needs met by the person who is supposed to care for them. and we all know caring for a toddler is a lot of fuckin work. but the results are that the toddler grows up healthy and ends up thanking their parents in the long run. i want to be able to thank myself for taking care of me, so i’ve gotta put in the work.
2. i’ve learned that a lot of my relationships are not reciprocal. this was a hard one. i find myself soooo frustrated with a lot of my most favorite people because the boundaries that i’ve set in our relationship are either extremely flimsy or non-existent. i’m happy i’m realizing this now because its a sign of growth. I’m beginning to question the structures in my life and the roles people play, wondering what sparks joy like an emotional Marie Kondo. it’s badass, but the hard part comes in when i’ve got to put some action behind these new observations and change things. i’m not super good at this just yet but working with my therapist has really helped me turn my relationship with my boyfriend around so i’m confident i’ll figure it out.
3. i’ve learned just how shitty lifestyle creep can be. in a way that isn’t really my fault! the one big purchase i’ve made since getting this new job is purchasing a nintendo switch for myself. other than that, i’ve been booked for a month straight for some intensive dental work, booked doctor’s appointments, and have been spending a lot more on transportation due to work. my money has been fucked up since i started making a higher salary, one that i consider “liveable”. i really hope that certain changes will make it easier to adjust and safe, make budgets for the shit i actually want to be spending on, and all around just being smarter with my money.
4. i’ve learned that my career just ain’t gonna get easier. this is another tough one to accept. i’m a person who really likes to be challenged, and unfortunately i’ve found that a bit of those “go-getter” and scrappy characteristics i’ve loved about myself have been damaged because of some uncomfortable work environments. i’m learning how to restore those entrepreneurial values that i had where i’d make a way if i couldn’t easily find one and would be so happy to roll up my sleeves and make shit happen without a second thought.
BUT what i’m trying to say is, the more i pursue roles that take me out of my comfort zone, challenge me to grow, and give me more responsibility, the harder it’s going to get to find shit like “work/life balance” and days where i can just coast under the radar. those days are long gone, unfortunately (and fortunately!) because there’s a way to mediate the bullshit while i’m making my way to the top. i just have to actively enforce boundaries for balance. i’m saying it like it’s so easy, but i know that’s the key to keeping my sanity while also keeping a challenging job. i’m sure there are days where i’ll have to work extra long hours or put my brain’s petal to the metal, but it can’t be the norm or else i’m going to ultimately set myself up for burnout.
no matter who is uncomfortable with it, i’ve got to make the space and time to take care of myself - no questions asked. because no one is gonna do it for me.
5. i’ve been reminded that love is not glossy and glamorous. not that i’ve ever been that type of person anyway. it’s been a long time since Ian and I have been in “sweep you off your feet” mode and that’s ok. i’m more of a “steady-state” type of partner anyway where i can really be supportive on a day-to-day level instead of blowing someone away with grand gestures that can only be done once in a blue moon. but what i want to say with this is that i think a lot of people hope to find their soulmate who will make their life complete, rid them of all of their problems, and then they can ride off into the sunset together.
that’s not how it happens. ian and i will never be that to each other and it’s ok. we make a good couple by way of being super understanding with each other and truly being invested in one-another’s happiness and needs which is something i’m grateful for. he’s really the most reliable person i’ve got in my life and i hope to be the same way for him. but we’ve gotten into some fights every now and again, or have both been cranky on the same day at the same time and been kind of venomous to each other. i learned in those times that it’s easier to unpack someone’s behavior and why his perceptions of priorities like communication are different than mine, instead of just throwing in the towel because we’re just too different.
in another instance, we just had a weekend where neither of us even touched each other after a few months of not even being face-to-face for awhile and just sat next to eachother all day and night and played video games in our pajamas. i’ll admit, i sometimes fall victim to wanting us to make every moment count and when we’re together just sitting and doing nothing can kind of drive me nuts, but i knew we both needed to rest and it was nice to just pretend to be roommates for a few days.
while i do like getting cute and spending days together with Ian when we hit the city and do some fun stuff, we just can’t do it all the time. he’s still a college student and i’m a walking dental construction site. we’ve got a lot going on that makes it hard to make every moment we see each other “stellar” but i love that and i love him and i wouldn’t want it any other way.
this post ended up a little longer than i wanted it to so i’ll leave you by saying i’m still sad. i hate the upcoming season so much and the lack of sunlight in the winter makes my brain very sad. but this year was a fruitful one. it’s been a lot of confusion, honestly. lots of things that i’m still a little fuzzy on but just like mentioned above, it’s all about having that plan b and not always about sticking around to pick up the pieces. when ya gotta move on, it’s time to move on.
i’m ready to move into 2020 hoping that all of the things i’ve learned in the past few years will start to pay off. i’ve got to remember and retain this info because it’s valuable and i KNOW i’m gonna need it again. it’s so much easier when you don’t have to re-learn shit because you kept the notes.
i want to finish off this year strong and go into the next feeling confident.

Pokemon Adventurers chapter 45 outtakes
Some more outtakes from Pokémon Adventurers that were supposed to go with chapter 45 but I couldn’t find a good way to fit them in/couldn’t decide which version was best and so now they’re just outtakes. Now here for your reading pleasure if you are by any chance suffering the ridiculously long wait for chapter 46.
The training yard was usually quiet at night since after dinner training was a rare occurrence. So when Ray stepped out of the Pokémon Centre he was surprised to find Violet outside sitting with her legs crossed on a concrete post. At her feet a purple star-shaped Pokémon lay on the grass, twisting and turning its upper body. The red gem blinked up towards the sky.
“Hey,” he greeted casually, prompting her to look up.
  “Curious about Starmie,” she said.
He stared at her in surprise for a good ten seconds. “Um… I guess, yeah, that’s true. What I was actually going to ask was what was keeping you up tonight but I am curious about your star.”
Violet tensed. “Sorry,” she muttered, lowering her head so that her hair shielded her face like a curtain. “Forget myself sometimes.”
“It’s honestly no big deal,” Ray said confusedly. “I mean, you were right and I could have come out here to see your Starmie - is that right? - but that’s not really the reason I came.”
“Your Pokémon already worked hard today, let them rest all night.”
An awkward paused occurred, which saw Ray staring at her again. She blushed.
  “This is a training yard…”
Ray blinked. “Oh, right!” he said, realising the obvious. “Really, you think so?”
  Violet nodded.
“Well, I suppose you are the more experienced trainer so I’ll take that as advice but I really need my Pokémon to be stronger. I don’t want to waste a minute.”
Violet tucked her hair behind her ear so she could give him a questioning look that urged him to go on.
“Our limits are too low right now. At the Battle Tent my Pokémon didn’t really compare to some of the other trainers’ and that was really eye-opening for me. Right now we’re not prepared for anything and that’s not acceptable, given that…” he hesitated, “given that we have a lot to lose if we can’t defeat some of the opponents we have to face.”
  “Sounds tough,” she said empathetically.
Suddenly there was a squeak from the swing set. It startled Ray a bit so he turned around, anticipating that he would see someone there to put his mind at ease but the swing that was currently swinging was empty. The hairs all over his body stood on end at the spooky sight. Just as he was rationalising that it was just the wind, the swing went faster. Faster and faster and faster it went until it was going so high and so fast that it flipped over itself. The chain coiled around the top bar until it was too short to swing anymore, at which point a dark, mysterious object flung out of the swing seat and collided with a tree. It spun around the trunk like a sash whirling around the bark. Then it popped out. The ghostly creature, with free floating hands and a great big grin, laughed uproariously.
  “W-w-what is that?!” Ray squeaked.
Violet giggled. “Just Haunter, that’s all.”
“Haunter… huh…” Ray muttered stiffly. “Is it… is it okay if I look them up in the Pokédex?”
Violet cocked her head to the side, reining herself in. “Yes but why do you feel you have to ask?”
Ray shrugged as he took out his Pokédex. “Well, I’m just not sure whether or not it’s rude to go to the machine instead of actually asking the trainer.”
She smiled at the innocence of his answer. “It’s fine. Nobody minds the Pokédex. Everyone knows that it’s one of the best resources a trainer has.”
“If you say so,” Ray conceded, capturing Haunter on his device.
“Haunter, the gas Pokémon. It lurks in darkness where nothing is visible while stalking its prey. If it beckons, do not approach. Its touch causes endless shuddering and anyone licked by its gaseous tongue will grow steadily weaker until they die.”
“Oh my god,” Ray gasped, staring at Haunter with a wide-eyed, terrified look like he was afraid to even blink in its presence. The Haunter chuckled and stretched its tongue out to an impossible length, wiggling it in Ray’s face as he tried to back away from it. He tripped on his heel and ended up flat on his back.
“Stop that!” Violet chastised. Haunter pulled its tongue back a bit and glared at her like she was spoiling everything. “Don’t worry, Ray. He won’t hurt you seriously, nothing to fear here. On the other hand, perhaps don’t discount that information since a wild Haunter might certainly try something like that on you.”
“G-g-good to kn-know,” Ray stammered, still terrified. “But still, don’t you worry about yourself with a Pokémon like that?”
She shook her head. “With a trained Haunter, not really like that. Shuddering and paralysis are the result of moves a Haunter might use. Quite safe to touch, actually.”
Violet held out her hand and Haunter shook it amiably. Then he began to swing around her as if there was an invisible, intangible rope between his hand and his body. Ray stood up, a bit relieved that the Pokémon wasn’t as dangerous as the ‘dex made it out to be but still took a few steps back to be well out of its range. At least now he felt he could take his eyes off it for a second and glanced at Starmie, still lying on the ground and blinking up at the sky. If the Pokédex was okay for Haunter, Violet probably wouldn’t mind if he checked it.
“Starmie, the mysterious Pokémon. The red core has been known to glow in all colours of the rainbow and can receive and transmit enigmatic radio signals. The signals can cause headaches in people who approach it. Due to its luminous nature, it is known as ‘the gem of the sea’.”
“That sounds like an amazing Pokémon,” Ray breathed. “I can see why you didn’t bring them to lunch. I wouldn’t keep these two out in front of people.”
“The recall information has nothing to do with why I didn’t bring them to lunch. Just eat differently, that’s all.”
  “Eat differently?”
Violet nodded. “Haunter is one of a few Pokémon that feed on intangible things, like dreams and feelings. And Starmie is a filter feeder, so it can’t eat out of water.”
Ray looked down, brow furrowed. “Man, it’s hard.”
Violet gave him a questioning look but he didn’t look up to see it, even as he continued: “Every time I meet a new Pokémon there turns out to be a completely different way to care for it. I’m already beginning to wonder how I’m going to take care of six. Maybe I ought to stick with the four I have.”
“Things like that can be off-putting,” Violet nodded, “but in my experience, the bonds you make are worth all of the work it takes. And maybe eventually you’ll start to consider caring for them as part of all the fun you’re having, ne?”
She looked straight at Ray with a smile. Meanwhile, Haunter spun too wide and flung himself into a climbing wall, leaving one hand behind with Violet. Ray tried to stifle a huge laugh behind his knuckles but he couldn’t hold it in. The climbing wall cackled along with him and Violet joined in.
  “See? Great, right?”
Ray nodded, unable to speak past his sniggers.
“Whatever is it you’re worried about, simply training isn’t the straight answer you’re looking for. Think of your Pokémon as your family. Keep their backs and they’ll keep yours.”
Ray’s laughter died down gasp by gasp as the profundity of that dawned on him. It took him back to the previous tournament (was it the previous year already? He had no idea) and how Violet’s statement had already been illustrated by his team and by his failure to do right by them. The team and the family could be one and the same; how could he have almost forgotten that again?
  “Something wrong?”
Ray looked up. Violet was watching him with a concerned expression. “It’s nothing, just… you made me think about something that I hadn’t thought about in regards to this.”
  “A failure?”
He hesitated, wondering how Violet could be so perceptive. “Yeah. I failed some people close to me and it cost us a competition. We couldn’t even salvage the championship in the long run but after all was said and done it didn’t even feel like the most important thing.”
  “Yet you still regret it.”
“Of course I do. If I had been more reasonable, more observant, more responsible, then maybe we could have gone further. It still feels like my fault.”
“The past is unchangeable now,” Violet said wisely. “Best you can do is turn those regrets into something you’re proud of. Let your Pokémon help you become the person you wish you had been so that when you do meet your friends again you can proudly say ‘I’ve definitely learned from my mistakes’ and you won’t even feel bad about it anymore.”
Ray grinned. “Thanks, Violet. I wish I’d had someone like you around. Although, if you’re not training, what are doing out here at this time?”
“Doing it for my Pokémon. They like the darkness, so I’m letting them enjoy the night.”
That got Ray to think. He let Zubat loose in the air. It shrieked, irritated by the artificial lights from the Pokémon Centre and the training yard but it flapped hard until it was flying about very high in the sky, almost invisible against the dark sky. Yet it wasn’t going anywhere. It seemed content to just fly around the boundary of the Pokémon Centre, occasionally dipping over the empty plot behind it. Ray sighed with good feeling and followed Violet’s example; he found somewhere to sit and observe his Pokémon doing what made it happy.
The training yard was usually quiet at night since after dinner training was a rare occurrence. So when Hilary stepped out of the Pokémon Centre she was surprised to find Violet outside sitting with her legs crossed on a concrete post. At her feet a purple star-shaped Pokémon lay on the grass, twisting and turning its upper body. The red gem blinked up towards the sky.
“Oh, Violet, you’re still out,” Hilary remarked, prompting a Violet to look up. “Are you doing training as well?”
Violet stared at her, puzzled. “Not put off by what happened this morning?”
“What? No, not at all. You seem to have powers, that’s all.”
  “That’s okay with you?”
Hilary looked at Violet sympathetically. “Do you think it shouldn’t be?” she asked, coming to sit on the post next to her. Violet didn’t answer. “We don’t really know each other that well, so I don’t know why you’d think that, but Mari already told us all about psychics and it’s not a big deal to me at all. In fact, I was even wondering if I would get to meet one.”
Violet’s confused look deepened and she uncrossed her legs to face Hilary.
“It’s kinda cool and I was hoping we could become friends and then maybe you could tell me what it’s like to have real psychic powers and have big adventures and I could tell you about… oh, I don’t know actually. All I do at home is go to school and do homework and hang around with my friends while they play beyblades.” She paused to take in Violet’s expression. “Sorry, I got a bit rambly there, didn’t I?”
Violet responded with a small smile and a giggle. She opened her mouth but suddenly there was a squeak from the swing set. Hilary jumped with a squeal and turned around. She hoped she would see someone there to put her mind at ease but the swing that was currently swinging was empty. The hairs all over her body stood on end at the spooky sight. Just as she started rationalising that it was just the wind, the swing went faster.
  “W-w-what is that?!” Hilary squeaked.
Violet chuckled. “Just Haunter, that’s all.”
“Haunter… huh…” Hilary muttered stiffly. “Is it… is it okay if I look it up in the Pokédex?”
Violet cocked her head to the side. “Yes but why do you feel you have to ask?”
“Well, I’m just not sure whether or not it’s rude to go to the machine instead of actually asking the trainer,” Hilary explained as she took out her Pokédex.
“It’s fine. Nobody minds the Pokédex. Everyone knows that it’s one of the best resources a trainer has.”
“Alright then,” Hilary conceded, capturing Haunter on her device.
“Haunter, the gas Pokémon. It lurks in darkness where nothing is visible while stalking its prey. If it beckons, do not approach. Its touch causes endless shuddering and anyone licked by its gaseous tongue will grow steadily weaker until they die.”
“Oh my god,” she gasped, staring at Haunter with a wide-eyed, terrified look like she was afraid to even blink in its presence. The Haunter chuckled and stretched its tongue out to an impossible length, wiggling it in Hilary’s face. She shrieked and jumped off her seat to crouch behind Violet.
“Stop that!” Violet chastised. Haunter pulled its tongue back a bit and glared at her like she was spoiling everything. “Don’t worry. He won’t hurt you seriously, nothing to fear here. On the other hand, perhaps don’t discount that information since a wild Haunter might certainly try something like that on you.”
“G-g-good to kn-know,” Hilary stammered, still terrified. “But still, doesn’t travelling with a Pokémon like that worry you at all? You’re not afraid that it might turn on you or even hurt you by accident?”
Hilary stood up, a bit relieved that the Pokémon wasn’t as dangerous as the ‘dex made it out to be but still took a few steps back to be well out of its range.   “Eat differently?”
Violet nodded. “Haunter is one of a few Pokémon that feed on intangible things, like dreams and feelings. And Starmie is a filter feeder, so it can’t eat out of water.”
“Wow. It’s amazing just how different Pokémon can be. How do you keep up with all of your Pokémon? I only have three and I still struggle to remember how to take care of them properly.”
“It’s hard,” Violet agreed, “but in my experience, the bonds you make are worth all of the work it takes. And maybe eventually you’ll start to consider caring for them as part of all the fun you’re having, ne?”
She looked straight at Hilary with a smile. Meanwhile, Haunter spun too wide and flung himself into a climbing wall, leaving one hand behind with Violet. Hilary laughed, trying to muffle the sound with her hand. The climbing wall cackled along with her and Violet joined in.
  “See? Great, right?”
Hilary nodded, unable to speak past her sniggers.
“Whatever is it you’re worried about, simply training isn’t the straight answer you’re looking for. Think of your Pokémon as your family. Keep their backs and they’ll keep yours.”
“Huh?” Hilary gasped, patting her chest to help get her breath back. “Training?”
“Mentioned it at the beginning,” Violet reminded her. “What are you training for?”
“Oh… ah… it’s a variety of things,” Hilary replied evasively.
  “Such as?”
She sighed. “It’s hard to explain.”
“Then…” Violet hesitated. “May I See?”
Hilary blinked at her. “You mean like… with your psychic powers?”
Hilary’s reaction really baffled her. She looked at Violet with bright eyes, like she was expecting something good to happen. Most people baulked at the idea of having their mind probed. “You trust me?”
“Well, we’re not close friends yet but you seem so nice and I saw you being so kind to Frieda and that other little girl at the Battle Tent so, yes, I guess I can say that I do trust you.”
Hilary took her previous seat on the post beside Violet and faced her completely. “Do your thing.”
“Okay, start off by relaxing,” Violet instructed, turning herself to mirror Hilary. Hilary took a deep slow breath while Violet closed her eyes. She didn’t particularly need to, it just felt right. “You can help me and prevent me accidentally seeing things you don’t want to me to know by thinking of what you want me to See.”
Hilary took that to heart so easily and all of a sudden Violet felt like she was wearing another skin. She was running, in a park, above the trees high buildings formed a dense city and right in front of her there was someone, someone they’d been looking for—she and the people running beside her. Oddly, there was nothing in her mind about Pokémon. Absolutely nothing. Not even an inkling of a notion that Pokémon might even exist while the group spoke about teams and championships. Then a Porygon Z appeared.
Things happened in short detailed scenes like that, following one after the other chronologically. Despite being choppy a familiar story unfolded magnificently before her. Violet would have thought it fictional if she wasn’t reading it out of Hilary’s memories and when the story abruptly ended at the Battle Tent she came back to the outside world feeling unsatisfied. The journey had barely begun.
“Wow… already some adventure,” Violet said, and then nodded. “You’re afraid—scared that you cannot succeed, no faith in yourself while in this unfamiliar territory. You’re from another world.”
She and Hilary locked gazes. It was remarkable that someone with a form so unalien could be extraterrestrial. Hilary’s eyes sparkled.
“Yes, you’re right! It’s so weird hearing it from someone else. But…” Hilary’s voice softened anxiously, “what can I do about it?”
Violet hummed thoughtfully. “All I can really advise is that you should keep trusting your friends and believe them. You’re capable. Trust your Pokémon too. Even though they can’t speak to you their strength will help you grow into the person you want to be.”
Hilary looked down at her hands on her knees.
  “Unconvinced?”
“I don’t know. Can you… sorry to ask this of you straight away, but can you tell the future as well?”
“You want me to read your future?” Violet asked, surprised.
“I just thought that maybe I’d have a better idea of what I’m going to do if I know what I’m going to do, aside from searching for that stupid Porygon Z.”
Reading the future was a much more common request than reading the past. Violet shrugged and agreed. Hilary had a blissful start to a great journey with her Pokémon so far and, despite some mishaps that had frightened her, a good trainer didn’t really have much to fear from such things. Violet placed her hands over Hilary’s and this time she was the one to take a deep breath. The future was so much more difficult than the past. She squeezed her eyes shut and reached for the Wheel of Time…
A shockingly lurid and chaotic vision struck her, leaving her with an instant headache. She felt like she was falling headfirst through a storm. Pain assaulted her in every form: stinging, aching, anguish, burning and more. The storm roared and screamed and cried in her ears. Visions of monsters whirled before her, their teeth, their eyes, their claws and their tails, so fast that she wasn’t sure what she was looking at. At the same time, several less ferocious monsters whirled with them. Those ones were unnervingly human-like. A suffocating force pressed against her chest. The storm cut her skin with icy wind. How could someone like Hilary have a future like this? Was there nothing more? She looked up, searching.
The storm suddenly broke and golden light shone down, warming the air. The most brilliant rainbow Violet had ever seen glowed around the light and the pressure lifted, giving her the chance to breathe in a sweet-tasting lungful of air. The screams faded, replaced by bubbling sounds like voices laughing and cheering. The storm continued to recede, letting the light tease out the grass and the flowers. Slowly, warmly, two others grasped each of her hands.
  “Violet?”
She was momentarily blinded by the return to the present. She blinked furiously for several seconds. She was staring at her own hands. Hilary held them tightly. She looked up. Hilary’s eyebrows were slanted in worry and fear.
“Are you okay?” she asked, voiced hitching like she was holding back a sob. Violet nodded. “It’s a bad future, isn’t it?”
  “What makes you say that?”
“It seemed like you were having a nightmare.”
Violet broke eye contact and pulled her hands away gently. “Hilary… your future is actually really good.” She smiled broadly, hoping Hilary would believe it. Hilary eyed her doubtfully. “Might be hard – harder than anything ever, even harder than things I’ve already seen in my own life – but in the end, your future is bright. Really, really bright. Going to be something great, Hilary, I Saw it.”
Hilary’s shoulders finally relaxed and she gave a small smile of relief. “Okay, if you say so. Sorry I put you through that, I shouldn’t have asked.”
“Don’t be. I agreed. Reading the future is hard, that’s all.”
Hilary’s face turned sceptical for a second. “Still, I made you push yourself.”
“Don’t worry about it. After a good night’s sleep I’ll be in fighting form again. My Pokémon aren’t even worried, see?”
Indeed, Starmie was still twisting and blinking at the sky while Haunter had possessed the jungle gym and was quite taken with anything than spun.
“Alright… I can’t really do anything to return the favour, though. I learned how to read palm lines in a book once, maybe I could do that,” Hilary offered.
Violet chuckled. “In case you haven’t noticed, I can read the future for real.”
Hilary turned away guiltily but she was smiling. “Haha, that’s true. But in that case I can’t…” she trailed off, taking a long time to think. “This might not be good enough, but would you be around in a couple of days. I’m going to compete in a Contest and I’d like you to be there.”
“Aren’t Contest’s public events?” Violet smirked, raising an eyebrow.
Hilary blushed. “I know that!” she huffed defensively. “But I just want to know if you’ll be there, you know, as my friend. And I want to show you… I want to see if I can show you how great I can be.”
Violet stared at Hilary’s determined expression in surprise. Then she smiled. “Sure.”
The day of the Contest rolled around quietly and calmly like every other morning in Verdanturf Town. Just as the sun broke over the trees Hilary sat up in bed. All the nerves under her skin tingled so that there was no way that she could even think of lying down again. She had to get up and start moving around, even if she had nowhere to go to as of yet.
Over the past three days the quiet, deserted Pokémon Centre had suddenly become crowded and lively. In fact, the whole town had gained a sudden influx. When asked almost all of them mentioned a “special showcase” at the Contest Hall. It had piqued Hilary’s interest but after finding out how much it would cost for a ticket, she quickly dashed the possibility of seeing it, to her disappointment.
Still, she realised she had a whole day ahead of her before her own performance began. The thought sent all of her innards jumping in her belly. She couldn’t stay like this until the evening; the nerves would definitely ruin her. Just as she swung her legs over the side of her bed muttering frantically over what to do, Mari piped up behind her: “Well, what do you want to do?”
Hilary squeaked and leaped to her feet as she turned. Mari lay across her bed, swinging her legs and beaming brightly at Hilary. “Mornin’.”
“Don’t scare me like that!” Hilary whined. She sighed. “I forgot you were a morning person.”
“If you’re bored before the Contest, try the Battle Tent again?” Mari suggested. “Good battles are a good way of unwinding stress.”
“I don’t know… if they get hurt my Pokémon might not be able to perform their best this evening. And I know they will be hurt because I’m not very good. That place is brutal!”
“Fine, have it that way,” Mari pouted, dropping her chin on the mattress. “Just go by myself then.”
“You’re being melodramatic! I’m pretty sure wherever you go the boys are going to end up following. I’m going to take a walk.”
With that, she turned on her heel to gather up her clothes and left the room without looking back to see Mari’s expression.
