You don’t recognize James’ car until he shouts at you. 

“Hey!” 

You give a little jump, turning midair to find James smiling out the rolled-down window. 

“Want a lift?” 

“God, you scared me!” You backtrack and open the passenger door. The seat looks to have been tidied in a hurry, receipts and takeaway containers tossed into the backseat. “How’d you even know I’d need a ride?” 

James refrains from responding to give you an expectant look. You roll your eyes and buckle your seatbelt. Satisfied, he puts the car in reverse, setting his hand on your seat to look behind him as he backs out of the parking spot. 

“You weren’t home when I got there,” he says, “and then I remembered on Sundays you usually get off at eleven, so here I am. Is Art not with you?” 

“No, he wasn’t working tonight.” 

James doesn’t seem too disappointed by this. He pulls onto the street. You watch him, looking almost unconsciously for signs of wear and tear. 

Now that rugby season is in full swing, he’s gone not just during the day for training but sometimes overnight for away games. You’ve been alone in your apartment for the whole weekend while he played in London and then Bristol. It was weird. You think you’ve accidentally grown used to having James around. You don’t fancy yourself a very tactile person, and the urge to hug him isn’t terribly strong, but it’s there. 

“How was work?” he asks you. 

“It was fine. How were your matches?” 

“They were fine,” he imitates you, grinning. “No, it’s like I said. Winning the second one’s always better than winning the first and losing the second. It’s nice to end on a good note.”

He’d texted continual updates while he was gone. You sat on your couch, pretending to yourself or perhaps to some invisible, judgemental observer that you were watching TV when really you were entirely focused on James’ texts. You imagined him sitting in his hotel room doing the same, or maybe in a pub with his teammates, smiling at his phone each time you responded. 

Your imagination has become terribly overindulgent lately. 

“Honestly, I was pretty disappointed you weren’t home when I got there,” James says, a familiar teasing lilt to his voice. “I was hoping to come in and catch you wearing one of my jumpers and staring tearily at a framed photo of me.” 

You roll your eyes, but your face burns. You did use his shampoo, once. In your defense, you’d run out of yours, but you thought that it wouldn’t be so bad to smell like him, nice and fresh and comforting. It had foamed more than you expected. It did smell really nice, but it made your hair feel dry (boy shampoo always does that, you’ve no idea how James’ curls seem to thrive under such poor treatment) and you felt silly about it for days, lovesick in the most derogatory sense. 

Didn’t stop you from sniffing your hair occasionally, though. 

“You weren’t gone to war,” you reply. “And where would I get a framed photo of you?” 

James looks affronted. “I assumed you already had one. How did you get through the weekend without even a photo? You brave, brave girl.” 

“I actually threw a rager,” you deadpan. “Rented out your room to six people traveling through with the carnival and let them invite over all their friends. Did loads of hard drugs.” 

“Well, we all have different ways of coping.” He reaches over to squeeze your shoulder consolingly. You pretend goosebumps don’t skitter all the way down your arm from the brief touch. “And what a marvelous job you’ve done covering up your escapades!” He exclaims as you pull up in front of the apartment. “I haven’t come across the cocaine dust on our bathroom counter yet, so you must have really done a thorough cleanup.” 

“Keep looking, it’s around there somewhere.” 

James laughs. You’re slower getting out of the car than he is, and by the time you emerge he’s in front of you, pulling you into a hug. You think your bones liquefy. He’s warm and strong and he smells like his shampoo, both arms squishing you heartily before he lets go with a little laugh. 

“Sorry,” he says, bringing his hands to your upper arms, “I didn’t even ask. I just missed you, you know?” James has this look on his face, smile brilliant and eyes wide open. So saccharine sweet you almost can’t look at him. “Guess I got used to having you around.” 

You do your best to smile back. “Yeah, me too.” 

He squeezes your arms before turning to go inside. “You smell like Italian food, too. I don’t suppose you’ve cooked anything recently that’s still in the fridge? I’m beginning to think about second dinner.”

A/N:I love Choso sm I want to smother him with so many kisses, and leave lipstick all over his face and neck. Anyway thank you sm for requesting this I love it sm 😭 thank you again sm! Sorry if it's too short :( also I got covid two weeks ago and god the fevers were the absolute worst. They had me crying too 😭😭

Request: Open! :)

It first started as a small sore throat in the morning. Choso tried to drink some water to wash off the sore throat but it didn't go away. Okay…

Then the constant sneezing. It isn't allergie season though…

And finally the fever.

Oh god the fever had him praying to whatever fucking God there was to help him. He groans as he lays on the bed. He grabbed all 3 blankets from the small storage room and lays down with all 3 of them, wrapping himself.

You were noticing all of this happening too. You had asked Choso if he was okay or if he needed anything but he would just say it's probably the dust that got him sneezing or that he was fine. But of course, you knew something was wrong. You were getting ready to go out with Yuki for some drinks when you heard a huge thump on the bed and looked. It was Choso.

“Are you sure you are okay?” You ask Choso, who was wrapped around with 3 blankets. “I'm fine, go and do what you need to do.” Choso said and buried his face in the blankets. His whole body felt cold, any slight movement made his body temple and cry.

“Choso you aren't okay, baby, what's wrong?” You ask. You knew how your boyfriend could be. He struggles with telling you what can be bothering him or when he's sick. “Just go out with Yuki, it's your girls night out.” He says, a bit muffled up from the blankets. You bite your lip and sigh. “Okay, but I'll be back. If you need anything please call me or text me, okay?” You say as you put your knees on the bed and get close to give him a kiss On his forehead but he stops you. “No.”

You raise an eyebrow and hold his hand, you pin it on the bed and take off all the blankets. You press the back of your hand to his forehead and pull away quickly. “You're burning up!” Choso looks away, his body aching even more now that he doesn't have the warmth of his blankets. “You have a fever, Choso.”

“I'm fine.” He says and takes your hand away from him. “It's just a small fever. It will go away.

“Small? Are you crazy?” You sigh and shake your head. “Look, I'll be back. I'm going to get you some medicine from the pharmacy.” You say as you get off him and Choso looks at you as he sees you change your pretty outfit to something more comfortable. You still had your makeup and hair done, which he found super cute. “Do you want me to bring anything to eat or you want me to make you something?” You ask as you put on your sweater.

“I'm okay [Name], please.” Choso says as he grabs the blankets again to cover his body up. “No, you're not. Please Choso, let me take care of you.” You say as you hold his hand. He sighs and turns to face the wall. You shake your head and walk out of the room. Choso hears the front door open and close. He closes his eyes as his body trembles.

His stomach growls and he groans. He didn't really want anything heavy or greasy. He has been craving one thing though. He grabs his phone as he opens his eyes and sends you a text.

Choso (9:10 PM)

Can you bring me some Miso soup?

Okay I will

Anything else you want, baby?

I'm bringing ice cream to help with your fever as well

Choso smiled as he looked at the text. He wished you could simply lay in bed with him so he could cuddle with you, feel your lips on his forehead and cheek, to feel your warm body against his own. He felt super touch starved. But he always is been touch starved. Even if you leave to go to The bathroom he feels upset to not have you against him.

And he won't admit that he also felt jealous. You go out with Yuki to drink or to eat. He just wants you all to himself. But he knows that you want to spend time with your friends. He knows you love him. He just misses you everyday.

He hears the front door open and he sits up. Choso lays back down as he hears the door to the bed open. “Okay, I brought you the soup.” You say as you place everything down on the small table that was in the middle of the room. You raise a brow as you look at Choso. “You want me to bring you a cold washcloth for your forehead?”

“I'm okay.” He says. “Okay. Here, take this medicine. It will calm down your fever.” You say as you place the pill on the nightstand and a glass of water. “I'll be right back okay. I'm going to the bathroom.” You say as you leave. Choso sighs and gets off from the bed. He grabs the pill and Glass of water and takes it.

He sits down on the pillow that was on the floor and covers his body with the blanket. He grabs the bag with his Miso soup in it and opens it. He sighs and waits for you to come back to the room.

He closes his eyes, feeling his body super exhausting. He suddenly feels a cold rag in his forehead causing him to jump. “Here. Now eat, you haven't eaten anything all day.” You say as you sit next to him. “Don't get too close.” he says.

“It's okay, I'll be fine.” You say and stand up. You grab a hair brush and sit on the bed behind him. “You were busy avoiding me all day, you forgot to brush your hair.” You say as you brush his hair.

He couldn't stand it anymore and just let you run your hand through his hair. He lets out a sigh of relief as the fever starts to calm down, his body no longer crying from the pain. He soon is done eating his soup and crawls on to the bed and lays on top of you. You chuckled and ran your hands through his hair. “Though you said to stay away?”

“I can't stand it anymore. I miss you.” He buried his face in the crook of your neck “I'll take care of you next.” You shake your head and wrap your arms around him. “You're heavy, baby.” You say and Choso rolls off from you. His back pressed on your chest as he went into a ball and felt your lips on his neck, causing him to shiver. “I love you.” You whisper. “Also, you are acting like a baby.” You giggled. Choso didn't care though. He just wanted you close to him. “Don't go out with Yuki this week.”

“why?” you raise a brow. “Just stay with me this week. Please?” He turns to look at you and you nod. “Okay.”

Who can say no to such a beautiful man like him?

And three days later you ended up with the same fever. Your body ached as you wore a hoodie, sweats, and three blankets on you. Choso of course, Being the best boyfriend he is, took care of you very well. But Choso simply couldn't leave you alone no matter how many times you told him he could get the fever again.

Dropping Byler Evidence Every Day Until Season 5

. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ Day 13: El's Letters vs. Will's Drawings . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁

Got this suggestion from @petrichor102, and I genuinely think this parallel is very intentional.

It's insane, insane that they actually included the fact that Mike doesn't visibly keep anything to do with El in his room throughout the show. This would probably be normal enough if it wasn't for El doing the exact opposite.

Her room in S4 is a great example of this, because we literally get full shots of El's room, and specifically her whole self-made box for him which shows just how much she has kept from Mike (pictures of him, his letters etc).

THEN straight after, we get a full shot of Mike's room, almost as if it's to show how different their attitudes are towards this relationship. They show you shots of both their rooms back-to-back for a reason.

We also get the record scratch moment, where Mike literally crumples up this letter that he's reading. Yeah, he's in a rush, but they really didn't need to do this.

This is further done again when we get a very clear shot of Mike crumpling up the LAST LETTER he could ever get from El and throwing it in the trash. We get a full on separate camera shot of it landing in the trash, it's clearly supposed to be something that the audience has to take note of. Later on, the military people find it in the trash, but the writers didn't have to make Mike throw it in there to make them find it.

He's sitting here thinking:

Me and my girlfriend are probably going to break up, she gave me a note that she's off to do something dangerous and has thrown my words back in my face. This note is so important to me that I just keep on staring at it.

Then Will says something about how the note will never change, and that there's no point in staring at it for so long. With that simple sentence, Mike BALLS IT UP and THROWS it in the trash.

It's a very interesting scene to me because he clearly has cared about this note and it's so important to him that he keeps on looking at it in the morning after she gave it to him. BUT only one thing said from Will and he just decides to commit to throwing it away. He could have kept it but just stopped looking at it, or he could have left it lying around, instead they made him throw it away as if forever.

ALSO at this point, they aren't actually planning on finding El. Jonathan, Will and Mike actually plan on going to Hawkins straight after this scene, so they have no plans to find her themselves right now. So he doesn't just throw it away because he'll see her again soon. IN FACT when Will reminds him after he throws it away that he will see her again, he gets really weird and quiet:

So he just treats their relationship so weirdly here. This is an 'I'm not going to revisit this' commitment. It's like he doesn't want to think about what she's angry about anymore, so when Will reminds him that he'll eventually have to say 'I love you', he's a little surprised.

In Comparison to El's Letters...

This is how Mike treats Will's drawings in S1 when he thinks that he'll never see him again:

Instead of having a 'book of letters', he has a binder of Will's drawings. Also instead of crumpling them up (can't believe I have to say that), Mike gently caresses them 😭

Of course, that's just S1, but in S4, this kind of contrast is also apparent if you look closely.

I've already talked about the contrast between El and Mike's rooms because Mike has nothing of El's anywhere in his room, but there's also the matter that Mike has Will's drawings on his notice board and still has them all over his basement walls. Yikes.

(Also some people have suggested that this binder under Mike's bed is the same binder that he has in S1, though it's not obvious. Would be interesting to have it symbolically buried under his bed though)

So what if Will's drawings are still on Mike's notice board? That's just meaningless details right?

The other things on his notice board are also actually clues to what are going to happen this season as well, so it's not far-fetched to think that Will's drawings being on there mean something too.

So YEAH, I think the evidence is OVERWHELMING here that Mike doesn't value El's letters as much as she does. When he's away from her, he feels less pressure to keep up the image of a happy couple and can be himself, unlike when he arrives in Cali where he instantly shifts behaviour. Having the image of a 'perfect' couple where one of them is overly obsessed with the other while one of them is negligent is never ever a sign of an endgame couple.

RAMBLING THOUGHTS AFTER FINISHING PART TWO. GONNA ADDRESS MY P1 THOUGHTS FIRST. SPOILER WARNING.

1 & 2: I think Debling could’ve worked in the second half, and I’m kinda sad Cressida didn’t get a happy ending. The Creloise fell of a CLIFF after ep 5 but I think it could still be saved

5: no cishet man has ever loved his wife more than Anthony Bridgerton I’m gonna be ill

6 & 12: kanthony’s absence was felt BAD in the finale, I think their reactions to LW were sorely needed. Also Jonny and Simone have both said they’ll be at every sibling’s wedding and stick around for years but they missed Francesca’s??? Also felt their absence too much then. They’re both booked and busy I think we’ll continue to only get a couple episodes a season from them

8: Francesca did get to thrive happy in pt 2 my baby I love her

9: I think they managed to disconnect the mondrich plot even further like 😭 once again, I don’t mind them their plot just feels very empty

10: Pen and Delacroix CONTINUE to be my fave duo I love them so freaking much and they can never get rid of it

13: Portia’s growth this season continued to be 10/10 I loved her and Penelope’s relationship it really showed what it’s like to be closely related to people you oppose and the process of needing to forgive and understand them for your own peace of mind

14: that was not how I was expecting Colin to find out about Whistledown

15: Marcus felt a little rushed in part two but I think I need to watch the whole season together to fully decide

17: this was indeed the longest 27 days of my life I got Covid day after it dropped lmfao

MY ~NEW~ THOUGHTS:

We finally got character development from Cressida and if they write her out I’ll be inconsolable (as will Jessica Madsen)

I hope they paid Golda Rosheuvel good for her feet exposure. Worth more than titties in this economy

I feel the need to tell everyone that £5000 in 1815 is in the realm of £500,000 today and we cannot brush over the fact Penelope has made herself the equivalent of a literal millionaire

Anthony has two moods ‘I’m obsessed with my wife’ ‘I want to win this game’ like it is comical how drastically different his facial expression is in the game of charades compared to pretty much every other scene

Anthony saying the marriage is perfect and not hard work and Kate being like BOY I will humble you,,,, doing the lord’s work I love her so much

At some points I felt like Francesca was fighting Anthony for ‘Violet’s least favourite child’ award lmao

John saying he’s off to look at the wainscotting was unfairly funny

Cressida in the red dress is even better than I imagined fuck even if she’s not gay then I am

Peneloise back together the universe is healing I love my babies all we need now is creloise lovers and peneloise friendship simultaneously I don’t like it being one or the other sue me

However much Brimsley is getting paid isn’t enough,,,, Hugh Sachs the man that you are

I adored Penelope’s wedding dress so much and as bitter as I am still about no kanthony wedding in s2, it felt kind of right somehow for Polin to be the first wedding we properly see in this show

Most of the costumes and makeup feel like they got worse,,,,, big ‘I hired a 14 year old’ energy. I don’t need historical accuracy but I would like a modicum of care and the costume/hair/makeup dept looking at a single historical reference from before 1850,,,, please

We all got the bi Benedict we’ve been asking for and I appreciate it, and recognise that he needed Tilley to explore that, but I still would’ve preferred if they first main queer experience was not a threesome

If they go straight into benophie in s4 (which idk, I’m so torn bc I feel like F, E and B all could work well next season) then I also feel like bi Benedict was just them throwing a bone for 5 mins but meant nothing

The CONTENTIOUS Michaela Stirling,,,,, I was undecided until I saw it but that was the definition of gay panic from Francesca and it worked so well I am so excited.

Joel had turned into an animal. The heartless soldier he knew he could be. 

It even scared him.

He walked through every corridor with no sound, shooting any movement he saw with perfect accuracy. 

He traced his steps, searching for Y/N or Ellie, whichever he could find first. 

It happened to be Y/N.

He found the hospital room they had put her in. 

While there was a bed in there, he found her asleep on the floor by the locked door.

After literally shooting the hinges off, he shook her away softly, "Sweet girl, we gotta go. C'mon."

She rubbed her puffy eyes.

He knew that look.

She was crying at some point.

She sat up, her voice low and scratchy, "w…Joel?"

He nodded, rubbing her cheek softly to help wake her up, "Let's go. They're gonna kill Ellie."

This woke her up, "What?"

He helped her up by her bicep, "Can you walk?"

She nods, "Yeah… yeah… I'm fine."

She follows behind Joel quietly, avoiding stepping on the assortment of broken glass with her bare feet. 

It scared her how his eyes flit back and forth in anger and determination. 

He was killing anything that got in their path with no thought.

It reminded her how lucky she was to be on this side of his anger.

But she got lost in her head as her body pushed against Joel's outstretched arm.

He quickly looked back, "Watch th-"

She looked down at the pile of glass shards she had just stepped in.

She looked up at the ceiling, biting her lip to avoid making a noise.

Joel cursed, "Fuck. Just… Goddammit. You bleeding?"

She lifted her foot, seeing a bit of blood drop onto the floor. 

She finally let out a little wince. "I.. I'm fine."

He clenched one of his fists, letting his voice drop low, "You have to stay behind me. Not too far. Not too close."

"No," she reasoned, "I'll slow you down."

He shook his head, "You can't. You have to keep up."

"I'll leave a blood trail. They'll follow us."

"Leave that to me."

She knew better than to argue with him.

Joel walked down the hall with determination.

He didn't even dare to look back at Y/N as she limped behind him.

He knew if he did, he'd slow down. 

Then he would never save Ellie.

He opened the door to her surgery room slowly, letting his eyes roam over the sight.

It killed him.

She was hooked up a million machines with three different people standing over her. 

The didn't notice the two outsiders until Joel spoke up, "unhook her."

They looked up with a gasp. 

The doctor stepped forward, "How did you get in here?"

"I said unhook her."

"I won't let you take her," the doctor said as he grabbed a scalpel. 

Joel shot his quickly.

His gun turned to the nurses, "Unhook her."

They screamed in fright.

"MOVE!"

They did as he said, and he quickly pulled her into his arms. 

He walked out of the door, expecting Y/N to follow.

The three entered the elevator in silence.

The doors opened to the parking garage.

Joel looked out. His gaze settled on a car that was already running.

He moved towards it.

Marlene moved from behind a pillar and pointed her gun at his head, "You can't keep her safe forever. No matter how hard you try, no matter how many people you kill, she's gonna grow up, Joel. Then you'll die. She'll leave."

Y/N finally spoke up, standing in front of him, "You'll shut your goddamn mouth if you know what's good for you."

Marlene scoffed, "How long until she's torn apart by Infected or murdered by raiders? Because she lives in a broken world that you could have saved, Joel."

"Maybe," he reasoned, "but it isn't for you to decide."

"Or you." She spat at him, "So, what would she decide? Because I think she'd wanna do what's right. And you two know it. It's not too late. Even after all of this, we can still find a way."

…

The two adults said nothing as the truck drove down the road. Y/N was in no mood to talk, not that there was even much to say.

Joel finally broke it, "Why… uh.. what happened to you back there?"

She looks away from her wrapped foot to gaze at him, "What?"

"You cried. I could tell. And… why were you on the floor?"

She sighed and shook her head, "I don't want to talk about it."

Joel's jaw clenched, "C'mon. You need to let me into that head of yours at some point."

She smiled to herself, "Alright. Fine. It's just…"

He looked to her again, "What? Sweetheart, please."

"Marlene said something that… I don't know. It sounds stupid…."

He scoffed, "Nothing that comes outta your mouth is ever stupid, Darlin."

She squirmed in her seat, "She said that… you dropped me and Ellie off at the hospital and… left. Marlene said she would take me to 'my family'. Whatever that means."

Joel took a long, deep breath, "Okay…"

She looks up at him with teary eyes, "…Were… were you gonna do that?"

His eyes widen, "Leave you? No. I'll never leave you or Ellie as long as you want me around."

She wipes her eyes, "Promise?"

He smiles, "I do."

She leans back again, "Well.. I… They locked me in the room when I tried to get out and look for you. Banged on the door so long I must've fallen asleep by it. How… how did you know I was there?"

He shook his head, "I didn't. I searched for you."

She smiled, "Thank you, Joel."

He shook his head, "Please don't thank me. I don't deserve it."

"Joel, please. I knew better than to believe Marlene. She's a fucking liar. I wouldn't replace you two for the world," she smiled even wider, "Well... I guess you really did pick us over the world, didn't you?"

He smiled, "I guess I did, sweet girl. I guess I did."

Ellie finally let out a breath as she began to wake up.

Joel cooed at her, "It's all right. You're with me and Y/N."

Y/N turned in her seat to look at Ellie, "Hey. Just… take it slow."

He nodded, "Those drugs are still wearing' off."

Ellie began to speak softly, "I was with the fireflies and then- what drugs?"

His eyes watered, "They were runnin' some tests on you, and some others." He looked over to Y/N with knowing eyes, "Turns out, Ellie, there's a whole lot more like you. People that are immune. Dozens of them. And the doctors, they couldn't make any of it work. They've actually-"

Y/N finally spoke, going along with his lie, "They've stopped looking for a cure." 

"Where… where are my clothes?"

Joel spoke up, "Raiders attacked the hospital. We barely got ya outta there. We'll find you some new ones on the way."

Y/N smiled, "Actually, Ellie. I have an extra pair of jeans that may fit you."

But she couldn't care less, "Were people hurt?"

Joel didn't dare to look at Y/N, and she sure as hell wasn't as good at lying as she had hoped. 

He nodded, "Yeah."

"Is Marlene okay?"

Joel's lips pulled into a thin line and he simply stared through the windshield.

Ellie's face dropped and she turned on her side to avoid looking at Joel through the mirror anymore.

"I'm taking us home," he finally said, "I'm sorry."

…

What they neglected to tell El is what really happened in the parking garage.

Marlene slowly lowered her gun, dropping it on the floor. 

Joel seized that moment of weakness to shoot her.

He placed Ellie in the backseat of the running truck before turning to Y/N, "You'll stay here and watch her."

She nodded. 

He walked back to Marlene who laid bleeding on on the concrete floor. She was spitting blood and crying out from the pain.

As Joel approached, she held her hands up as much as she could, "No, wait, wait, wait. Please. Just.. let me go."

Joel said in an even tone. "You'd just come after her."

Gunshot.

…

"Well," Joel sighed as he inspected the smoking engine. "She got us pretty far. Take the rest on foot. It's probably a five-hour hike, but we can manage that. Remember?"

Ellie smiled, "Yeah."

He looked over Ellie towards Y/N, "Think you can walk?"

She smiles and nods as she laces up her new boots, "Yeah. I think I can do it."

…

"You know, Sarah and I used to hike like this all the time." He smiled, "I wouldn't say it was her favorite thing. She wasn't a fan of the mosquitoes and such. But… she was a big climber, or scampering. That's probably the right word. That girl, man, she woulda liked you. Not to say the two of you are the same. Definitely different kids."

"How so?" Ellie wondered.

"Well, she was a lot more, I wanna say girly. And I'm not saying that you're not girly-"

Ellie scoffed, "-I'm not."

Joel nodded, "Yeah, you're not. So… that. And she was taller. She had a killer smile. Again… not saying you don't. But… you know why I think she'd like you?"

"Why?"

"Cause you're funny. I think you would've made her laugh. You would've liked her."

"Yeah, I bet I would've."

He finally turned toward Y/N, "She would've liked you, too."

Y/N smiled, "Don't pity me just cause you said she'd like Ellie."

"I'm not!" He laughed, "I'm being honest. She… uh… She liked anything that she knew I liked. So… she would've liked you a lot."

Y/N teased him, "Are you saying you like me, Joel Miller?"

He scoffed, "If you haven't realized that by now, we've got major issues, Sweetheart."

She smiled as she followed behind him.

…

"There it is," Joel said as they looked over the city. "Not much further now."

Ellie stopped, "Hey. Wait."

Joel immediately stopped, holding out his arm to stop Y/N as well.

"Back in Kansas City, you asked me about the first time I killed someone. Well… when I got bit in the mall, I wasn't on my own. My best friend was there and she got bit, too. We didn't know what to do, and she said, 'we can just wait it out, be all poetic and just lose our minds together.' And then she did. And I had to- uh… her name was Riley, and she was the first to die. Then it was Tess. And then Sam-"

"-That's not on you." He interrupted. "Look, sometimes, things don't work out the way we hope. You can feel like you've come to an end, and you don't know what to do next. But if you just keep going… you find something new to fight for. And maybe that's not what-"

"-Swear to me. Swear to me that everything you said about the Fireflies is true."

Joel didn't hesitate to lie, "I swear."

Y/N opened to mouth to swear too, but Ellie held up a hand, "Don't. You've never lied to me before, Y/N. So… I know you wouldn't now."

Y/N felt an uneasy feeling in her stomach at that.

Ellie nodded at Joel, "Alright, then."

And she began to walk further down the hill.

Joel pulled Y/N close and gently kissed the top of her head, "We'll be alright, sweet girl. I'll swear that to you too if I need to."

Y/N tilted her head up to gently kiss Joel's chapped lips, "I don't need you to swear anything. I know you'll keep this one."

He smiled.

They walked down the hill together, ready to try this whole family thing again.

I wanted to peek into their lives and see how they lived and loved. 🥰

~January~

Snow burdens the branches of the pines, the bitter North wind whistling between the trees, through the darkness, and over the blanket of fresh powder shrouding the forest floor. The mountains are sleeping, but your wolf is awake.

He nearly collapses, sinking to his knees as he shuts the cabin door. You spring up from your place by the fire to rush to him, but he holds up a hand, a growl rumbling low in his chest. You freeze. Panting, he slowly raises his face. Snowflakes cling to his lashes and dust over his head and shoulders. The dusky circles under his brown eyes speak of weariness, yet their expression is dark and wild. His nose is flushed from the chill. Beads of sweat quiver on his brow.

The fever still hasn't broken.

It appeared two days ago, with other sudden changes. Christopher has grown restless and short-tempered, and won't sleep in your bed. He smells intoxicatingly of cedar wood and amber.

You've been through it all before, his annual rut at the end of winter - four days of watching him endure the throes of primal agony. He would steal away at night, to hunt, your proximity far too overwhelming for his heightened senses and desires. Unchecked he would fail to stop himself. He would take you, mark you, knot you.

He hadn't in the four years you'd shared a bed and the comfort of the other's flesh. You'd spoken of the mating rites, but he always held off, afraid to break you. So protective of you always, and without a second a thought to himself.

You respected his space, his wishes, attempting to help him navigate the torment of his natural longings as best you could.

But this year it had taken him like a wild fire. The fever wouldn't break. He wouldn't sleep or eat. And now, here he was, half frozen and shivering on the floor.

No more.

You slowly cross to pull him up against his weak protesting. You peel away his frost-damp clothes and drag his heavy frame to rest upon the bed. With his last strength he tries to push you away, but you slip under the blankets beside him, pulling him into your arms.

His eyes flutter shut as he curls against you and nuzzles into your neck, whimpering that when he wakes it will be too hard for him to hold back.

You tell him not to try.

You tell him that you need him, want him - all of him. This part too, with all the others.
You assure him softly that you're not afraid, nor should he fear to make you his...you already belong to one another, after all.

You whisper that you love him.

Christopher exhales, tears trickling down his cheeks to mingle with the sweat and melted snow. You hold him to your breast, brushing soft kisses into his hair.

Cedar wood and amber.

~April~

You shake out a flannel shirt, crinkled and bunched from wringing to hang it on the line that stretches from the side of the cabin to a young yellow birch within the clearing. You smile as you fasten it with clips. He had worn it on the first day he visited the diner. It was faded then, and it has grown more timeworn still. But the fabric is thick, the seams hand-sewn, and if the dye has begun to abandon the thread it is only ever the softer. 

Strong and soft, like him.

The warblers are singing in the branches of the white pines as they busily fashion their nests. You stroke a hand down over the little bump of your belly, musing over the nesting that has started to change the trappings of your own little home. There's still plenty of time, but Christopher's excitement has poured forth in the form of hard work, and you're certain that when your time comes he'll have stored by enough for the next three winters yet.

You hear the rumbling of his truck a ways off. He left in the wee hours, the bed loaded down with wares to sell to suppliers in town. By the time you've strung up the last piece of washing he's already at the mouth of the trail, his arms laden with flowers and parcels wrapped in brown paper. The light wash of his denim shirt brings out the early kisses of the spring sunshine on his honeyed skin.

You follow him into the house where he puts your wildflowers into a vase and insists that you sit while he tends to lunch. Unwrapping the brown paper packages you find a set of pretty maternity pajamas, a box of chocolates, and the goat's milk soap you like. 

He's already eaten half his sandwich when he sets yours down, and you tug his wrist, pulling him into a chair to prevent him from setting out to work yet again. 

When the dishes are cleared you won't let him leave. He'd work every second of every day and well into many nights if you let him. But today you want him to rest. It's a mild and lovely afternoon and the chores are done. Other things can wait.

You sit across his lap on the porch swing he built two summers before. Your arms encircle one of his as you rest your head on his shoulder. 

His lips brush your forehead as his thumb caresses the little curved scar where the slope of your shoulder meets your neck. The one that means you belong to him and no one else.

The birds sing and the swing creaks.


~July~

He calls you from around the other side of the house. You draw an arm over your dripping brow and struggle up from where you're crouched to spread a batch of plump, ripe blackberries between the screens of the drying rack. There are still so many. Some you'll turn into jam. Christopher will eat the rest. He loves them. You rest the colander still half-full with berries against the full swell of your belly, wrapping an arm about the rim to keep it in place. 

You're hot and uncomfortable these days. But, when the morning's work is through, you'll go down to the lake together to shed the day's heat in the cool, still waters. You'd been every afternoon that week. Christopher was a strong swimmer, and would stay in far longer while you sat on the shady bank with a book. When he finally quit the water yesterday, he'd never found his clothes - instead he'd pressed you back into the lush green grass and made you sigh his name. 

As you round the far side of the cabin your eyes catch his form. He stands under the sweltering sun, stripped down to pair of fitted khaki work pants and thick suede boots. His muscular chest is slicked with sweat and he stands, panting, with his weight pressed into his right hip. He holds an axe in his hand.

His mouth pulls up at the corner and his tail swishes at the site of you. You tuck yourself against him wrapping your free arm around his damp waist. Oh how you want to swim. To hold his strong body in the dark water.

He gestures with the axe at what he's fitted together with stripped pieces of soft pine. A little cradle. He nudges it with his foot, setting it to rock. You bring a blackberry to his lips and he accepts it.

You kiss him.

Salty skin and summer fruit.


~October~

Your eyes flutter open to the sound of little cries. You sit up and stretch, blinking in the softness of the early autumn light.

You inhale deeply. Cinnamon and hickory smoke.

Outside the air is growing crisp and the leaves of the deciduous trees are blushing and abandoning their hosts, covering the floor of the wood in their pageantry. Fruit and game have begun to grow scarce as the forest prepares to enter the long slumber of the colder months. Nights require fires more often than not.

There is a small fire crackling now. A little black cauldron hangs over the flames, and you can smell the porridge simmering within. The man you love sits in a rocking chair near the warmth, a little bundle in his arms. He looks up at you as you rise and he smiles. He's been all smiles lately. In fact, you don't think the little dimple has left his cheek since he met the tiny she-wolf in his arms two weeks ago.

He says she looks like you, but all you see in her beautiful little features is Christopher. She has two tiny fuzzy ears and a darling little tale.

You reach down to stroke her fat cheek and your heart aches.

It aches from love, so much of it.

When the doctor placed her in your arms a part of your heart that you hadn't known existed burst to beating. You thought you loved the man who had knitted her inside you as much as you were able, but you had been ignorant in that respect as well. When he took your daughter in his arms and looked down on her face you thought that there wasn't room in your chest for things so vast, so deep.

You named her Hannah, for the sister her father had lost. It meant "grace".

So fitting, you think.

You move your fingers into Christopher's curls and he looks up at you. His brown eyes are soft and warm. The lovely eyes you saw that first day at the general store - the same through every changing season.

The maple and the birch will wax and wane, but not the cedar, not the pine.

Some things will remain.

And he is evergreen.
