Ace of the Week #1: Maël Le Gall
And here we have Maël being an absolute relatable mood.
I, for one, never understood why/how "sex sells." But, alas, being on the internet as long as I have... I can confirm that it apparently does. It's a bit like a twilight zone for me.

Thoughts on Skam🇫🇷; season 12, episode 8, clip 3
It just breaks my heart that, just when they delivered their imho best season ever (and maybe one of the best in the entire franchise), Skam France is discontinuing production of anymore seasons.
Seriously, this stuff is so good. Honest conversations with peers in similar situations, Maël’s questions and doubts (that clearly show the production team did in-depth research into the asexual experience), and a support group? Brilliant, 5 stars, applause. 👏
Also, I really like the pace of these storylines. We’re in episode 8 now, and even though it seems the greatest crises have past, there’s still ample time to work through the other things that occupy Maël’s mind. (his feelings for Jade, some sort of catharsis with his former friends and of course the rising tension between his parents)

Ace of the Week #1: Maël Le Gall
You should never rush anyone into accepting a label that may explain their experiences. And, absolutely, over-emphasis on labels or use of stereotypes can definitely cause a lot of harm. I respect the people who do not wish to go by labels.
But here's a beautiful illustration of why labels are important - especially to minority groups who you don't hear about often!
youtube
Maël thought he was broken. Thought that something was wrong with him. When looking up what might be wrong with him, google sent him to pages about erectile dysfunction. When talking to others about what he was going through, he was presumed gay. His mom wanted to send him to a doctor.
It wasn't until people started giving him the right words to research that he found what he needed. He wasn't broken. He wasn't ill. He wasn't gay. He wasn't "not in love." And most importantly, he wasn't alone.
There's a lot of debates about using labels, coming up with micro/spectrum labels, or even just the existence of such labels in general (especially about asexuality in particular). But just like we have so many words to describe shades of colors, shouldn't we accept that more specific words are great tools in our toolkit for describing specific experiences? And labels open a door to community and provide a way to at least start a conversation about your experience. These words do not have to be shackles. For some, these labels are incredibly validating. Especially when other describers are misunderstood by the average person.
“Yea, it’s me, no doubt about it. I know it’s just a word, but I truly feel liberated! It was horrible to feel different without understanding why.”
