What if They were Dads?

SUMMARY: Headcanons of what I think they would be like as fathers to your child. And what if his dormmates were like honorary uncles to the child?

CHARACTERS: OB Students (Riddle Rosehearts / Leona Kingscholar / Azul Ashengrotto / Jamil Viper / Vil Schoenheit / Idia Shroud / Malleus Draconia)

COMMENTS: I would have liked to have made a headcanon about the relationship with the boys' parents and siblings, but since we don't know them that well or at all on the Eng Server like Vil's father, I think I'll leave that for a possible post that complements this one. If you want.

Since I didn't want each character to have a big chunk of text, I put them as paragraphs instead of bullet points.

CONTEXT: This was written with a cisgender female reader in mind. Reader is Yuu. But if you want (and can) read it in any other way, feel free to.

By the way, this is one of those moments when I wish English had a second person plural, instead of the singular and plural being the same. Whenever I write “your child” I mean it in the plural (you, the reader, and his)

Riddle’s child(ren) call him: Father

Riddle has the same demands and standards for his child that he has for himself. But he doesn't want to make the same mistakes as his mother, so in comparison he can be more permissive. Because of this he will ALWAYS listen to you if you tell him he is being too harsh.

In terms of studies, etiquette and behaviour he is quite strict as you would expect. But when it comes to play he lets his child do almost anything they want.

He doesn't know how to play with his child, but he will always make an effort to learn how to and do it with them. He almost seems to regress to the childhood he never had and wants to give to his child. Whenever the child learns a new game, they will show it and teach it to Riddle and he will be delighted with it.

Although he is strict, he is also relatively protective, especially if your child is a girl. He tries not to be overly protective, but he can't help but worry about your child. If there was a right way to raise a child, is he doing his job well enough? You will have several conversations at first to reassure him that he is doing a good job.

He will study any and all parenting books that experts in child behaviour and education recommend. This kind of knowledge is never too much. Which often leads you to try to convince him to relax and just trust his instincts and what he feels is right. The child is his, not all those authors and experts. Sometimes there are things that a parent simply knows.

Lawful and calm Uncle Trey. They love uncle Trey's sweets! Sometimes Riddle asks him if he's not giving them too much sweets and Trey always assures him that it's okay because he knows how to make healthier sweets and the limit for a child to eat. If they weren't already Riddle's child, the whole thing about always brushing their teeth could be scary.

Chaotic Uncle Che'nya. The crazy and fun Uncle! Your child and Che'nya join forces (maybe even with you) to play pranks on Riddle. Never anything that could get the child into trouble with their father, just enough for everyone, Riddle included, to have fun.

Uncle Ace and Uncle Deuce are more from your side than Riddle's honestly. Ace is a bit like Che'nya in the case of being one of the chaotic pranksters uncles. But he is also the uncle of magic tricks who is always deceiving, but also entertaining your child with them.

Deuce is the rad uncle with a cool moto and/or even cooler blastcycle, who offers to take your child for a ride in it with him. Your child also finds it funny to see the two of them arguing amicably. But it’s even funnier to see them imitating their father trying to order them to stop arguing.

Uncle Cater doesn't show up very often, but they like him. He's not chaotic like Ace and Che'nya, but he's also fun. Your child enjoys receiving compliments from him and taking pictures with him.

Your child imitates their father scolding Grim too. Just like Riddle (and probably because they're still little) they have a very bad temper. Riddle gets embarrassed whenever you say that someone takes after their father.

Leona’s child(ren) call him: Dad

Leona still doesn't like kids... your child(ren) is/are just an exception.

Yes, Leona would treat a daughter slightly differently than he would treat a son. In the same way that he treats men and women a little differently. But the only difference is that he would be tougher on a son than a daughter, but will still be affectionate regardless.

No matter what gender his child is, he wants the same for them: be strong both physically and mentally. To outsiders like some servants or citizens who don't know him, they may get to the point of thinking Leona is a harsh father who doesn't deserve all that love from his child, and he will tell both you and your child not to mind that. But the truth is that he is just like he was with you at school: a tough guy who hides a caring heart.

Leona continues to show himself to be a person who doesn't want anyone to upset him and who would growl at anyone who bothers him. The only people who can get close to him even when he's angry and remain safe and sound are you and your child. He'll still growl at you and your child quietly, but there will be a volume that is the line, like if his growl is louder than that limit it's because he's getting really angry, until then it's just him being him.

Your child will already have the best private teachers and tutors (one of them being Kifaji/Neji if he’s still alive), but even so, Leona will want to make them study and learn more. But in that discreet way that he knows. He will not force them to study more, he will find a way to convince them to want to learn more on their own.

You end up being the most affectionate parent and the one they trust for emotional comfort. Leona is the tough love, you are the soft love (at least in comparison). Leona will always tease you, insinuating that you are too soft and only spoil your child. Although he enjoys when you spoil him too.

He is 100% the ‘Go ask your mom’ kind of dad.

He lets his child take naps with him. And you too.

If he has more than one child, he will police himself not to favor any of them. He may have a tendency to favor the younger ones because of what he went through as the youngest himself, but none of his children will be treated in any special/different way based on their birth order. Neither the youngest nor the oldest.

He will try to convince his child not to be too close (emotionally) to their uncle or cousin, but won't stop them from playing with Cheka. When your child is old enough not to tell others what is said in your home, Leona and them will talk badly about Falena and Cheka behind their backs.

Leona will prefer your child to play with Ruggie and/or his children. On the one hand, he wants to keep them away from his family, but on the other hand, he also wants his child to know what the real world is like, to see both wealth and poverty, to know royalty as they knows their people and only then create their own judgement.

They don't call anyone uncle or aunt other than Falena and his wife. In the same way, Leona also doesn't give cute titles to anyone without being sarcastically. Even when he calls you “love”, “darling”, “honey” or something like that, it's to tease you.

Whenever you go to Shaftlands, whether for democratic reasons or on holiday, you always try to find a way to meet with Jack. Leona pretends that he only helps you with this because you want to see your friend and he wants to get rid of his family. Both you and Jack know that he just doesn't want to admit that he wants to see him too. Jack is the cool parent's friend who taught your child how to snowboard. While they are little they like to hug his tail because it’s fluffy.

Despite everything, he doesn't want his child to have the same lack of hope that he has, and despite trying to hide it, he always feels extremely guilty and bad whenever your child says something like that. At these times he relies on you to be the ray hope in that house, they will both need you for that.

Both Leona and your child are afraid of you when you get really serious or angry.

Do you know that scene from The Lion King where Mufasa uses Zazu to give Simba an pouncing lesson? Leona often does something similar, but instead of the target being a blue bird, it's a magical creature called Grim.

Azul’s child(ren) call him: Daddy (when little) Dad (when older)

Azul is an extremely emotional father, despite trying to hide it. There's going to be a lot of moments like: “HE/SHE IS THE CUTEST LITTLE THING IN THE WHOLE- *clears throat* I mean, he/she is such a charming little child.” He will most likely cry at your baby's first words, steps, anything.

Azul is overprotective! If any living creature even thinks about harming your child, he will tortu- that is, find a completely legal way to ensure that it never happens again. Now, if you'll excuse him, he suddenly felt like talking to Jade and Floyd. (The same protectiveness applies to you.)

Although he is very (secretly) emotional and loves to spoil his child, he is also relatively strict about their studies. He likes to spoil them (and you) when it's deserved, but he will not raise a spoiled child! This ends up balancing things out a bit.

He will hide the whole mafia-like part of his life from his child. Dad is just doing business, boring adult stuff. Maybe when your child is older he will start to reveal a little of that side of his life, if they later want to join their father it will be their choice. But until then, let them be innocent children, they are cuter and happier that way, there is time for everything.

He will always hold back his emotional side so as not to be overly affectionate. Unless his child starts crying. At that point his mask falls completely and he becomes the most affectionate and comforting father there can be, that is his weakness.

And if one day the child realizes this and starts using crying to get what they want from him, he won't know whether to be angry that he is being emotionally manipulated by his own child, or proud that they learned so quickly.

You will be the only one immune to the fake crying.

From the beginning, Azul has been wary and suspicious of letting Jade and Floyd be like uncles to your child. However, you two ended up letting this happen, but Azul will always keep an eye open.

Both Jade and Floyd will definitely use the child to play pranks on Azul. Mostly Floyd, Jade prefers to watch and assist. Azul will always be upset with the twins, never with his child. And depending on the severity of the prank, he will turn on his overprotective side and threaten Jade and Floyd that if that happens again they will never see your child again. They never go beyond that limit.

Every now and then when Floyd plays with your child, he will do that joke where he playfully tells them he's going to catch them and bite them. Actually in his playful voice, he doesn't want to scare them. And they will run to Azul and hide behind his legs asking for help while laughing. Or tentacles if they are in their merfolk form.

If you ask them Jade is the scary uncle (only sometimes) but they themselves don't even know why. It's just his vibe or something. However, they are not afraid to ask any of them for something, it being to play or for help.

Azul loves cooking for you and your child, and they love their father's cooking.

You know those little plastic cashiers where kids pretend to have a little shop and try to sell things to people at home? Usually parents or sibling. Azul loves to play this with his child because it is a great and fun way to pass on his knowledge. Both about sales and about taking care of your money. Usually using the Grim as a guinea pig. Grim also likes to play because he always ends up with food in exchange for toy money.

Jamil’s child(ren) call him: Dad (in informal moments) and Father (at formal events)

Jamil needed to learn to express himself more and better emotionally so as not to end up being a cold father without meaning to. He needs your help to teach your child when to hold back and when to know when they are in a safe space to let go.

The only thing that will follow Jamil forever is an inevitable feeling of guilt for your child having the same fate as him, simply for being his child: serving the Al-Asim family with no other choice. But you can be assured that if there is a way to stop this and give his child freedom of choice, whatever that method may be, he will not give up until he finds it and do it! Normally parents want to give their children what they always wanted and could never have, in Jamil's case it’s freedom.

There was something Jamil wanted to do, but he didn't have the courage to ask the Al-Asim for some kind of vacation. But you had! Using your great friendship with Kalim, you managed to get him to allow you to take a vacation long enough for you to travel as a family, as Jmail wanted. Jamil has always wanted to travel alone, but now with you and your child he would like to travel as a family and give his child the experiences he would have liked to have had himself.

He is quite demanding with his child's education and training. However, his attitude towards this is always calm and collected, and he is attentive to his child's limitations and needs. He is a great and responsible tutor, who knows how to distinguish between being a teacher and being a father.

He is usually quite serious, so you and your child are the ones who start messing with him to have fun and make him laugh. It's always nice when he reminds you two that he can also be a tease. Normal or biggest target of your joint teasing ends up being Grim at some point.

During his work as Kalim's servant, Jamil always had to cook a lot and he's not that big a fan of cooking, so so he can rest at home you're the one who cooks most of the time. He will teach you everything you want to learn and at first you will cook together a lot until you feel comfortable cooking alone. But even then he will continue to offer to help you. Your child will continue to say that Jamil's food is tastier, but yours is prettier. And the food you make together is the best because it’s tasty and pretty. Jamil will also encourage his child to cook with you two so that they can learn from a young age.

His child knows that there is only one thing in this world that can make their father scream in fear: Bugs! If your child is also afraid of insects, you're screwed, because you will be the insect killer in that house. However, if it is just the two of them, Jamil's protective instinct will be stronger and despite his fear he will protect his child. If your child is not afraid of insects, then Jamil will have two protectors. “Can you do dad a favor?”; “Where is it?”; “Living room, south wall last time I saw.”; “Does it fly?”; “...Yes.”

Kalim will treat your child almost like one of his own children, for loving you both so much. He got emotional when he found out you were pregnant, he wanted to help pay for your doctor's appointments if necessary (never was), and he got emotional again when your child was born. He loves buying toys for your child too and give them gifts. He would love for Jamil to let them call him Uncle Kalim. And he loves it when your kids play together.

Vil’s child(ren) call him: Father 

Vil wants to have a family that is at its best as he likes to be at his best himself. He wants you and your child to be as beautiful on the outside as you are on the inside, just as he strives to be as well. However, he would treat a daughter slightly differently than a son because of the different pressures of societal beauty standards.

With a son he would be as strict with him as he is with himself. But with a daughter, he knows she's more likely to suffer from these kinds of things. So although he continues to be relatively strict and wants her to be the best she can be, he ends up being softer with criticism and stronger with praise and soft love than he would be with a son.

He would hire a specialist, like as a child psychologist or something like that, to always know the best ways to rise and protect your child. Children of famous people like him, especially in the digital and social media age, may need more protection from their parents in this regard, in addition to the toxic pressure of comparison that exists. However, because Vil cares so much about your child's personal development as their happiness, he may end up putting enormous pressure on himself to be a perfect parent too.

Both Vil and your child will need you to be the person who brings them both back to the real world and the life of a loving family with flaws like any human being. Vil will always listen to you if you feel he may be being too harsh and demanding with your child, or with himself in terms of parenting.

If you are the type of person who likes to tease Vil by letting yourself be sloppy from time to time, (always at home) then your child will also like to tease their father like that. “You have your mother’s cheekiness, I see.” Vil sighs but laughs. The teasing includes eating sweets and food that Vil would not approve of. You are the parent they ask for things from and who best comforts and pampers them. You two probably team up to make Vil relax and have fun with you.

His child will have the best teachers and tutors, go to the best schools and best establishments for any extracurricular activity they want to have. Vil will probably force them to have an extracurricular activity but they will be free to choose which one.

Rook is OBSESSED with your child! In a respectful way of course, he is just already a huge fan. The result of combining your DNA with Vil's? MERVEILLEUX! He won't hold back the tears when he sees the baby for the first time. He will LOVE playing with your child. He will babysit for free and will be happy to do so if you ever need. It will be a long time before he stops getting so emotional whenever your child calls him "Uncle Rook."

Uncle Epel is the rad uncle, when Vil is not around. He is that person who will help your child do cool activities that Vil may not allow. Like taking a blastcycle ride with him, eat grilled meats, playing with things that make the child very dirty or other things that Vil didn't like Epel to do when they were at NRC. But if at least one parent allows it (you), then there is no problem. Right? All this, of course, when Vil is not around.

When he is there, both Epel and your child behave like little angels. You and Epel have to be very careful that the child doesn't get careless and say something in Epel's dialect in front of Vil. They love Uncle Epel because it is fun to do cool things without their father knowing and with your help.

Your child likes to use Grim as a doll to dress up in cute clothes. The funny thing is that Grim likes it too because your child eventually realizes that if they tell him he looks cool instead of cute, he'll let them keep dressing him up.

Idia’s child(ren) call him: Daddy (when little) Dad (when older)

Idia doesn't believe he can be a good father. A shut-it and antisocial otaku like him? Are you crazy? That's a disaster! He can't take care of himself, how is he going to help you raise a child? However, and especially with you, he also has that overly cocky side that believes that even being an antisocial nerd he would be 1000 times better than a lot of parents out there. So basically he has a tendency to oscillate between these two moods.

In comparison, you are the strict parent, he is the parent who spoils the child. They are both afraid of you when you get upset. He's a ‘Don't tell your mother’ type of dad. He can't say no to his child, but, oddly enough, he can't be emotionally manipulated either. He may even let his child do a lot of things, but even he has limits to what he knows is good or bad for them.

Because he's the permissive father, he's also the scariest when he gets serious. He can never get really mad at his child, but he can say a firm and assertive “No” if necessary. However, if they are still very young and start crying, he will panic and call you immediately. You will then have to comfort Idia and tell him that no, he did not make a decision that put him on the path to the traumatic and apocalyptic ending. What he probably did was the opposite.

If it depends on him, his child will be a nerd/otaku just like his father. However, he doesn't want them to be socially anxious like him and will always encourage them to go for walks with you outside even if it's without him. That doesn't mean there aren't times you drag him outside with you.

Besides occasionally questioning whether he is being a good father, there is something else that haunts him... He still carries and will probably always carry the feeling of guilt for what happened to Ortho, so he is absolutely TERRIFIED that something like that may happen again.

Idia has always tried to keep your child as far away as possible from all areas that are dangerous or even remotely similar to the hallway where that happened. But if your child ever happens to even enter an area that their father did not allow, they will get to know a side of Idia that sometimes you yourself don’t even remember exists: The overprotective, traumatized side that isn't afraid to scare his child if it means keeping them away from the danger. And probably the only way they'll see his red hair. But it will probably be after that, that the two of you will have an open heart conversation and Idia will apologize.

Now, about Uncle Ortho, they LOVE uncle Ortho! He's the one who goes for a walk with you and your child when you and he can't convince Idia to go too. He is a cheerful uncle who loves to play with your child. You three made up stories to explain why uncle Ortho was a humanoid. You always make up different and crazy stories to jest with them and make them change the subject. The day will come when they will be old enough to know the truth.

Idia may even talk badly about himself a lot of the times, but no matter what his child do, they are talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular and everything good. “Of course that's because they inherited it from you, not me.” He will say with a smile.

Both Idia and your child treat Grim like a pet cat and find it funny to see him getting grumpy.

Idia spoke to his child in that baby voice when they themselves were also babies. And maybe also when they are children to the point where they tell him to stop treating them like babies.

Malleus’s child(ren) call him: Daddy (when little) Dad (when older) Father (at formal events)

The day Malleus found out you were pregnant was already a happy day, but the day your child was born was the happiest day of his life! And every moment with them is the happiest moment of his day. And of course with you too. He totally and completely loves his family!

Anyone who dares to speak ill of the child of Malleus Draconia, especially about the fact that they are half-human, will suffer the consequences! Anyone who spoke openly about the child being something of a disgrace, shame or an abomination was either killed or imprisoned. (Depending on how opposed you really are to Malleus killing or ordering someone to be killed.) and of course, the same applies to talking bad about you.

The problem is that this is doing the same thing to your child that was done to him. He's scaring everyone and making them afraid to come near your child for fear of saying or doing something that might upset them or Malleus. He listens to you and agrees with you, showing concern and thoughtfulness about what should be done. He hates people being disrespectful to the ones he loves, but he also doesn't want his child to go through what he went through.

What ends up happening is that, on Malleus's part, he realizes that he has to start learning ways for people to respect his child without using fear, but to do that he also has to start letting certain insults slide. He doesn't like it, but if it's what's best for his child, he'll do the best he can. Although the same applies if they disrespect you. He hates it so much!

In the case of your child, you are helped by Lilia (if he’s still alive), Silver, Sebek and their families. Perhaps trying to spend more time among their people and with other fae, humans, and half-fae might be beneficial to a child's social development.

Lilia would treat the child as if they were his own grandchild. Even if Silver also has children, they are ALL Lilia's grandchildren! “There's no denying it any longer... I am... officially... an old man... For the best possible reasons!” Everyone will rescue your child from Lilia's food. “Never eat anything that Grandpa Lilia cooks, you hear?”

Silver is the calm uncle who, despite not being the most fun to play with, is the one they turn to when they want to rest and simply have a good chill time. Or take a nap. Probably who they turn to to run away and hide from Sebek when he's being annoying. He ends up being the adult (than is not their parents) that they trust most and feel most comfortable with. Silver is very happy when they ask him for help to get closer to an animal to see it better, and even more so if they and the animals end up interacting and playing with each other.

Now about Uncle Sebek... If there is anyone more protective and flattering of that child than Malleus, it is Sebek. He cried when the child was born, for sure. And cried even more when the child said his name, or whenever they at least tried to. The day they called him "Uncle Sebek" he was about to have a heart attack. The problem is that he ends up being one of those type of person who adores children (although in his case the only ones he likes would be Malleus's and his own children) to the point that the child finds them annoying and clingy. “But don't tell Uncle Sebek that, he'll be sad.”

Whenever the child throws a tantrum that ends up causing their powers to manifest in storms or uncontrolled magic, Malleus will take care of it while you stay away and safe. To him, any attack would be mere tickling, but he always made sure that your child knows that the same does not apply to you. They may end up thinking that you are very fragile while they are little, but it is better this way to ensure that they do not hurt you unintentionally.

This also means that whenever you need to say ‘No’ to your child, Malleus will do it if there is a possibility that they would start throwing tantrums. At least while they are young and cannot control their powers well.

Malleus also runs the risk of being a father who spoils his children.

Your child and Grim probably burn a lot of things around the castle because they play together and they both have fire powers.

Gawd dayum y’all hate each other but also have crushes on each other for some reason.

You have your own club called ‘The Everything Club’ and have your own group of friends which you have sort of healthy friendships with! (Not really)

You met Bill when you both were at a comic book store and reached for the same book, Bill immediately tried snatching it but you snatched it back and that led to you both getting into a verbal and physical fight.

Anytime you two spot each other you talk shit about each other to your friends. They are tired of both of y’all’s shit.

Bill: “poser.”

Fem!Reader: “small dick bitch.”

You once broke Bill’s glasses and your mom had to force you to apologize and Bill never let it down because he knew how painful it was for you to apologize

You would mistreat your own friends just like Bill did, you would do anything to manipulate or abuse them to try and get your way but somehow always fail.

You have a cat and that cat often gets let out to do whatever and usually gets fed by Bill’s mom but you don’t know that. (You vent to your cat about Bill.)

Bill had a dream about you and woke in terror and confusion. (Will not admit that he liked it.)

You both made out at prom behind the bleachers and never mentioned it ever again.

You and Bill’s hands would sort of touch if you ever walk near each other, you both wouldn’t speak and would just graze hands until you held pinkies

You and Bill’s mom are sort of friends and anytime they ran into each other they would have long conversations while you and Bill would stare each other down

(You would both fantasize about each other and quickly got embarrassed and angry at such fantasies.)

You would put him in his place if he called you slurs out body shamed you or your friends by body shaming him and calling him a complete fag for hanging around a horror movie perv (it was funny seeing how angry Bill got.)

When the god awful fire that Bill started happened, you didn’t know how to react but you knew that you would have your own downfall too and cut your friends off early (at least you realized)

Even if you guys were similar, you both went in very different directions in your future. He was jobless (I think he had no job, idk I don’t remember) while you worked at a dance studio as the instructor.

When Bill was on a walk he saw you through the glass window of your dance studio and one of your dancers immediately spotted him and screamed (because who wouldn’t.). You went outside and yelled at him before realizing that it was Bill and not some creep.

When you ended the class you both decided to go the bar and catch up, but you realized that he didn’t mature and grew to be a man-child and you made fun of him for that which lead to a verbal argument.

You don’t remember much when you woke up but you do know that you both were at your house, on your couch, and very nude.. you were going to fucking kill Bill when he wakes up.

2 things about Lily

It's obvious that she was the one to defeat Voldemort the first time around, not Harry, but Rowling refuses to elaborate on the spell, saying that she cast it accidentally (which... yeah sure, but then she created a world where only one mother and child could do it out of love... like did other children that suffered were not loved enough? oh i so dislike that). I don't know why Rowling does it. Like I always wanted it to be an actual spell that she (and James) researched and did as part of their back-up plan, but noooooo. A woman? Win against the big bad? In the 90s?? Noooo

Lily grew up with two people that we get to know intimately, and loved them dearly. Two very miserable, envious people, who likely hid their accents and the fact that they are of working class, two people who did everything, and sacrificed many things in order to be around characters who where wealthy. Two social climbers. And you know what Lily also did? This has to be deliberate. Like, I don't think that it's a bad thing. I think that Lily definitely wasn't as insane about social climbing as Severus and Petunia (I consider social mobility to be a positive thing!!), buuut she too married into money. So there is that.

I find it sad that the prospect of Lily being crazy ambitious and wanting to have better things are always portrayed as bad in fics, if it is discussed at all. You could have made her into a person who dreams about making it and give her a conflict about marrying into money, feeling like she will become a fake, and still craving that security! But nooooooo. Pefect perfection or a sleazy seductress, nothing else ever

Extremely good points. Wanting social stability is just a real, relatable thing, and it's got to be a lot for Lily, being told you're magic... and ADDITIONALLY learning that the power structure of the magical world that you live in now is super prejudiced against you? And there is an active dark wizard *currently* targeting people like you?

Also the sacrificial magic being cast accidentally never made sense. Harry does the same thing (I guess) on purpose at the end, with the result that all of Voldemort's spells have trouble "sticking," because Harry sacrificed himself for EVERYBODY? But I mean Regulus also sacrificed himself to protect people from Voldemort, he didn't have to die. Dumbledore willingly died to protect... Harry, Draco, Snape? Shouldn't that have had some magical effect?

It honestly would have been *so* much easier to say that Lily defeated Voldemort with a spell that sacrificed the caster's life. That's very cool, old-magic vibes.

But... this slots into an larger trend with the way JKR writes passivity and self-negation as heroic traits. The best example of this is Newt Scamander, her hero with the central traits "neutral" and "pacifist." But even with Harry... there's a reason he doesn't level up his core spells, and is most heavily associated with a disarming spell that he learns in year 2 and a shield spell he learns in year 3. JKR actively doesn't want him to be a combat character. It is *true* that Harry does not cast a single spell on-page in the entire first book. He does more magic later, but that original tendency is still there: there's a reason most of Harry's level-ups consist of loot given to him by loved ones, and not so much skills that he improves. JKR's ethos on power (expressed through Dumbledore) is that the people who handle power best are the people who don't want it.

And unfortunately... leveling up your spells on purpose... now that sounds like something that a person who WANTS POWER would do. Casting super duper powerful spells accidently (which harry also does, constantly) (and Lily does, of course) ... now *that* is much more morally pure.

So I've been doing a lot of thinking recently, about wicked, because of course it's about wicked.

Specifically Glinda and her relationship to sorcery. (Hold tight this one's gonna be a whole ass essay) I find it interesting that the film really tries to make it clear that she has, not just little power, but none at all.

Because in the book she does have magic! Like there's this great scene where her, Nessa and Elphaba are talking about sorcery and she explodes a sandwich in their faces to prove a point.

This isn't relevant at all I just really like the scene. Point is, book Glinda's magic ain't too shabby. And in the musical (unfortunately I've only seen it once so apologies if I've read this wrong) I kinda saw it as she did have magic, but just didn't really get good at it before school. But in the film it's clear she doesn't have any. Like in NOMTW she pushes a pedal to make the bubble instead of using her wand, similar to how the wizard uses mechanics to fake sorcery. So why is it different? I hear you ask.

Well my curious child, I'll come to that in a minute (promise) right NOW I wanna talk about why Glinda wants magic in the first place.

And this is something that's had me stumped for a while, I mean it's not like she needs it. She can easily get whatever she wants from social manipulation, and yet it's still her heart's desire to become a sorceress.

And it's SUCH a big part of her character that couldn't just go around not being able to answer that question now could I?? And guys I think I figured it out.

So she's always been jealous of Elphaba, right? Right. And the thing about Elphaba that she envies, is that she's powerful without having to rely on other people. Glinda doesn't have that. She gets to the top because people like her. She said it herself, 'its not about aptitude it's the way you're viewed'. She knows the way to truly succeed is to make sure that you're liked. And she's very good at that, so she doesn't need sorcery, and YET she wants it. And to me this proves that Glinda hates the reason that she's liked. She wants people to love her for what she can do, not for the shallow persona she presents. She wants to have a power all to herself. She doesn't want to need people. She wants to be the kind of person who hops on a broom and overthrows the government at the drop of a hat (pun intended) but that's not who she is.

Of course she doesn't go with Elphaba. Elphaba can be strong on her own but without the public on her side Glinda is powerless.

And just think it's soooo fucking interesting how Elphaba and Glinda's different kinds of power can be seen as just another metaphor for their sense of self. Because Elphaba has had to trust herself, to have a strong enough identity to know that she's better than what people say. But Glinda's entire identity and self worth are tied to what people think of her, she's only as good as people say.

So of course she doesn't go with her.

But here's where she changes (for good hehe). And of course, it's down to Elphaba. Because Elphaba has always believed that Glinda is powerful outside of other people. And, back to sorcery now because yes that is what I started talking about, it's Elphaba who invites her to sorcery class, it's Elphaba who asks Glinda to come and meet the wizard with her, it's Elphaba who asks her to come with her in defying gravity and (SPOILERS FOR PART TWO!!) its Elphaba who gives her the Grimerie. Because Elphaba has always believed Glinda was strong even when she wasn't.

Glinda always wanted to be a sorceress but it was only Elphaba who had faith that she could do it. And this is what makes Elphaba giving her the Grimerie so symbolic and so, so fucking sad. Because Elphaba's showing her that she's better she thinks, she just going like 'hey, you got this'. And srhstjdyfkvhlvukflyyc. And so the way Glinda's viewed doesn't change at all, but the way she sees herself does, and so don't mind me while I go cry in a corner.

And you know maybe all this was obvious to literally everybody who watched the film and I've just mansplained lesbianism to everyone but I just really needed to write this down because I've been going insane about the power dynamics and I can't shut up about it.

But dude these characters are all so complex I just wanna peel them all like onions, but oh boy does it make my eyes water.

I read this quite a while ago but this still leaves such an impression on me. This is Tim getting the doggy love he’s always needed, which slowly leads him to the family he’s always deserved. As a ‘Tim Joins the BatFam Early’ story, this one is brilliant. Sweet, fluffy with just the right amount of angst but an excellent happy ending.

I cannot recommend this one highly enough! I truly believe this story is a hidden gem. I mean, it has dragons, Tim as a dragon rider, dragon hunters, the Bat Family as knights, grappling with right or wrong (are the dragons their enemies or not?), secrets and secret identities (if I remember correctly), and a big final battle. What more could you ask for? This is one is wild ride!

Since we are about to have three Mer AUs in a row, I thought it best to include another story in a different universe. Witches and Familiars might only come under the category of Animals/Non-humans if you squint but I think it's nice to have one more story that's not a Mer AU just in case you're not into that.

In this universe of witches and familiars, Tim is a familiar pretending to be witch because the Bat Family already have a familiar in Bruce and certainly don’t need another in him. He’s always hidden this by pretending to just be bad at magic/not found his skill yet. Only, it starts to become a problem when Dick and Jason notice issues with their magic from Tim supplying them with too much on top of Bruce’s existing contribution so they suspect Bruce is ill – dying! Now, the angst is nigh as Tim has to decide, which is more important, his security in the family through keeping his little secret or relieving everyone’s worries about Bruce's health… but risk him being thrown out. Useless, unneeded, a hindrance not a help.

Honestly, this is such a fun read! A brilliant one-shot that I highly recommend! Check it out.

He had a desperate, fleeting hope that he wasn't about to be murdered, but the shifting shadows around him weren't very promising.

This is a bit of an odd one. But it’s all in good fun. Jason is a pregnant mermaid/merman/merfolk/mer - yes, you read that right, he’s a pregnant cis male mer, but keep in mind he’s not human here so mer biology can work differently to human biology – and Tim is a mer specialist and, to a lesser extent Steph and Duke are humans helping him too. Throughout this story Tim and Jason bond as podmates (i.e. brothers of different species) even in the aftermath of Jason’s sexual assault by another mer as Tim fights for Jason to be released back into the ocean with his pod (in other words the other Bat Family members). If you are OK with pregnant Jason who has his baby in the actual story with allusions to his past sexual assault, then go ahead and try this one! Despite its odd details, it’s a good one and I do recommend it.

They don’t do it immediately, though – at times, I felt the pacing was a little slow but still enjoyable. They wait and watch and see if Tim is really in need and then they offer him the option to join them not just steal him away from his home. It’s told in three parts from Tim’s perspective as he slowly learns about the mystery of the Loch Gotham monster with his camera in hand. Highly recommend!

Gemma: How about your teen years?

Jude: Much of the same, but add in stupid teen activities. We drank cheap-ass booze, smoked weed, occasionally experimented with harder drugs, built bonfires for parties, skinny dipped, gave each other poke tattoos, and played games like Seven Minutes in Heaven.

Gemma had read of such activities and even pretended to experience them in acting roles. But her real life was devoid of any teen adventures like this.

Gemma: (hesitantly) Did you and Chessie date?

Jude: Nah, contrary to the rumors, there was never anything between us. She and Marcello became an item in their first year in high school. She went straight from "that shit is gross" to "I'm going to marry Marcello." And while every couple I know has wobbles in their relationships, not these two.

Gemma: Why would there be rumors to the contrary?

Jude: Because she always picked me for Seven Minutes in Heaven. She loved to piss off Tinsley, and she knew I wouldn't paw at her. We usually planned the next party or trip into Windenburg during our seven minutes. Growing up in a tiny village has disadvantages. Everybody knows everything. If you tried to purchase condoms, you were labeled a lecher, and no one would let you date their kid. If you bought a pregnancy test, then you were grounded until adulthood. And forget about getting booze unless you bribed the town drunk to go into the liquor store for you.

Gemma: Where was my other sister? I don't even know her name.

Jude: Carlotta - never Carla or any other nickname - is wired differently. Whereas Chessie saw rules as suggestions, Carlotta saw them as laws. She's damned smart and very reserved. While Chessie and I ran wild, Carlotta practiced the piano or calligraphy, read books, and dressed up for tea. Sometimes, despite their age gap, she'd play dolls with Eva.

Jude: She applied for a posh boarding school between Britechester and Windenburg during high school. It was there she found her people. She thrived in that way of life and never looked back. She went to uni and law school, where she met her old money-husband from a titled family. Don't get me wrong, they are always gracious when you talk to them, but they live in a different world.

Gemma: Carlotta isn't going to like me, is she? I'm the illegitimate child and a former Del Sol actress. I hardly fit into a posh life.

Jude shrugged and didn't answer immediately.

Jude: (carefully) Carlotta has always felt like a misfit in her family. I believe that you will fit in and become Chessie's best friend. That will bother Carlotta. And yes, slotting you in the family tree will cause her discomfort, too. Her husband will probably ask if you trained at the prestigious acting uni in Britechester and which Shakespeare plays you have starred in. When you say you starred in daytime television, he'll likely say, "I think our family maids watched that type of show."

Gemma: (slowly) I see.

Jude: Gem, don't take it personally, and don't allow it to affect your relationship with the rest of your family. Carlotta isn't mean; I'm positive she won't try to cause you grief. But don't expect a lot from her.

Gemma: (quietly) Okay.

She’s a bit of toxic honestly which, yk unsurprisingly makes island life a walk in the park

Pre crash- She lived with her dad Alexander who’s 28 (yeah fill in the blanks) Her mom left when she was a baby because she never really wanted to be a mom but Alex was an amazing dad for Angie, even if he was young, working two jobs and studying law all while raising a wild child. Her dad also had a habit of doing her hair every morning. For him, it was a way to bond. He’d always do it up in pigtails with yellow bows.

Post crash- She doesn’t have any strong convictions or connections. She makes herself useful to whoever is currently most powerful so they’ll return the favor. She doesn’t particularly like anyone, but she doesn’t particularly dislike anyone either. Naturally, she uses this neutrality to her benefit. She’d survive pretty long. Assuming we follow cannon and they get saved, she would survive the whole book. Assuming we go from the no rescue angle, she’d definitely get killed, just later on. The only person (or people) on the island she’s really loyal to are the littluns. She thinks they’re too young to be going through all they are, and she really just wants them to be able to have a life one day after all the chaos of the island. She doesn’t show this though. She calls them brats and plays with them, but sometimes she’ll put some fruit on lower branches, or make sure all the littluns are safe and without major injury.

General info- Angie is 12 years old, Latina, and uses she/her. Personality wise she lies almost compulsively. Sometimes about big things, sometimes about small things, but it’s an urge she has that she has a really hard time controlling. She’s also very energetic! She bounces from wall to wall and afterwards still has energy to do things like listen in on people’s bs or instigate something. Bringing me to another trait of her’s, she’s a terrible instigator. If she smells even a little bit of drama she’ll find out as much as she can. And if nothing is to be found? Well she doesn’t tend to lie here and there… But she’s not just some lying asshole, she’s very dedicated to things and people if you give her a chance, she also has a strong interest in fashion and music. Back home her walls are absolutely covered in posters or drawings of her favorite pop stars from the radio. All of them do seem to be women though, hmmmmm. I think of her sort of as an unholy blend of Regina Gorge and Kokichi Ouma

William is actually really good at playing guitar. I mean, Spring Bonnie plays a banjo so- it only makes sense he’s super good at both!!

Speaking of Spring Bonnie- he has an attachment to the suit because he feels better being hidden from everyone. He never has to worry about people looking at him when he’s Spring Bonnie.

On his days off I imagine he just likes to sit down and have a few beers, maybe a couple cigars… watch a movie, read a book, play guitar..

He doesn’t really like looking in the mirror :( not because he doesn’t like himself, but because he’ll get too fixated on “I’m getting older and time isn’t slowing down.”

He has adhd, and really bad fixation problems. He will not eat, drink or even think of himself for a whole day until he is done working on an animatronic, and suddenly - “oh fuck I’m starving, I’m really thirsty and I need to pee.”

Him & Henry have a lot of inside jokes- and employees look at them like they’re crazy when they say them- and laugh super hard together.

William loves dressing really nice. He loves suits, button ups, bows and ties. He loves super sleek black shoes as well. It makes him feel good about himself.

Other than purple, his favorite colors are yellow, pink, and baby blue.

His parents always kind of left him to do whatever he wanted. They were kind of weirded out by him- his behavior was “crazy,” but only because he was an undiagnosed neurodivergent child.

Because of that he has a hard time letting anyone in, he’s very shielded off from anyone but his partner and Henry.

He doesn’t think he’s husband material. At all. From his perspective, he’s awkward, weird & not the nicest person- so why would anyone want to be with him?

When he got his first animatronic up and running- he has never been happy like that day ever since. He was so proud of himself.

He got into making animatronics on accident when he was younger. I’d say about 23-25.

he was drawing one day, then suddenly it turned into a blueprint of Spring Bonnie. The ideas kept popping up-

He read so many books about machines, computers, everything and anything he could find about electronics, and the ideas kept coming.

He finally decided one day to go for it and he started tinkering with wires & plastic, molding and shaping clay and making casts of everything, and before he knew it- he had a whole animatronic.

He tore it down after some time and kept the information stored in his back pocket for later.

Growing up he didn’t have many friends. He spent most of his time just people watching.

When he was in elementary school- kids used to pick on him for his height. He was always so tall- standing out from everyone else. He hated it.

He got suspended from college once after some guy called him a loser, William didn’t like that. The guys head ended up being smashed into a table a few times.

As he gets older, his anger isn’t so strong anymore. Slightly thankful of that fact, he takes advantage of it to go do more things that usually would just piss him off.

He’s farsighted. It’s hard to see things up close. He really only uses his glasses when working on projects/reading.

He really loves music from the 70s/80s- and really only listens to that.

He faces towards the water in the shower.

He loves collecting vinyls & cassettes.

William only sleeps in his boxers. He can’t have anything else on or else he won’t be able to fall asleep.

It doesn’t matter how cold he is- he has to only be wearing his boxers.

Speaking of sleeping-

He can only fall asleep lying on his side.

He sleep talks here and there.

He tosses and turns a lot.

Unfortunately, he has a lot of nightmares too,

Often waking up in the middle of the night sweaty from them.

He has to have complete dark and silence in order to sleep, too.

His mind is constantly running and going- it’s the only way he’ll be able to shut it down.

He has a horrible, horrible sweet tooth.

I mean, constantly he just wants to eat sweets

He has had so many cavities.

He fucking hates the dentist but he goes anyways.

William exudes a LOT of confidence- but deep deep down he doesn’t feel confident.

He doesn’t - and has never really felt true empathy.

He KNOWS he should feel bad for certain people or things-

But there’s just a disconnect, and he doesn’t feel it.

I'm so confused about where people are getting the idea that Solas loves talking to kids from . I think, maybe, the projection here is making people push the envelope on his characterisation a bit

Let's be real. He'd tolerate them at most. Even his own (especially his own good gord that man has enough self-hate to fill a reservoir). He's even annoyed by Cole following him around and nagging him about the talisman. He makes a typically bitchy remark about it. Can you imagine him with a toddler bugging the shit out of him while he's trying to work? Or screaming when he meditates? Getting filth all over his precious books and artefacts?

I mean I'm very open about my own child-adverse projections but I do genuinely think he would not be particularly child-friendly. Solas screams someone who's internally thinking 'get that thing away from me' every time a child is invading his space too much. It's odd to me that there are so many people who have the white picket fence fantasy with the egg of all people. Cullen is right there for that. Hell, even Bull would fit the brief pretty well.

Like YES he would love teaching them and helping them learn but otherwise he would be the most hands-off father in existence and TRUST ME when I say hands-off fathers are a nightmare. I've seen more than enough women come close to tearing their hair out because their partners/co-parents only help with the bits they're interested in. (I.e. playtime, not cleaning or nappy changing or dealing with tantrums or behavioural issues etc ETC!!) I would not want Solas as a co-parent. I really wouldn't, and if you were even a little bit realistic about what it would entail I don't think you'd want it for your Lavellan either lol

Idk man outside of Tumblr just being for funsies and not taking it too seriously it does kinda worry me bc so many people just do not think about what constant ballache parenthood is. Once the novelty of picking a name and seeing what your kid looks like wears off you're left with a crushing responsibility that does not go away for 18+ years. Sure, those responsibilities shift a bit as time goes on as they mature and become more independent. But you do have to make a lot of sacrifices. You don't have any time to just be a person anymore. You have to have your eye on them pretty much constantly for the first few years. You have to change everything. You have to become a different person.

Maybe I'm just thinking about this a lot bc I'm at an age where people around me have started popping kids out and I can see what a nightmare it is. (That and my mother has been pressuring me to breed since I was like 12 and has only recently accepted that that is Not Happening.) Idk I just wish more people would think about what parenthood is gonna be like before they make a decision that doesn't have an undo button. It is a joke amongst the cousins that they are constantly on Lliana watch or, as Fennick calls it ‘duchess duty’. Can communicate with all dragons and is dubbed as Andarnas favorite

While they technically do not have kids and are essentially the coolest aunts and uncles of the children, Garrick takes on responsibility for all the marked ones as Xaden fully ascends the Tyrrish throne. They aren’t their parents outright but they absolutely look out for and take care of all of them. Some have even hyphenated their last name to include Cardulo-Tavis

In the popular sequel book "A Later Journey to the West" (same story where we're introduced to Sun Luzhen); Zhu Bajie goes back to Gao Village to reunite with Cuilan - only to discover that she was pregnant when he left, and she only gave birth when the Journey to the West ended (demonic pregnancy can be difficult to gauge).

Their son is named Yijie (豬一戒) which means both "One Discipline" (a Buddhist principle like how Bajie is called "Eight Precepts Pig"), or "Pure Joy". I can def see Bajie meeting his tiny son and declaring him his pride and joy. Greater than any treasure or achievement he received during the Journey.

In our DMs we discussed how Yijie likely married a fellow pig yao, who later became Pigsy's mother. Yijie had to become the Man of the House at a young age (for demons) when Bajie passed away, so he learned how to cook to feed his family.

Pigsy doesn't have many memories of his father, as Yijie was quiet old when Pigsy was born. Pigsy identifies more with his mother's side of the family because of this.

Pigsy has a few wood-block paintings of his father's family (namely his human grandmother, and many grand-aunts), but never dared think that his long-passed "Gramps" was THE Zhu Bajie!

To quote mutual @soniclozdplove; Wukong was at Pigsy's naming ceremony and tried his best to stay out of the photographs.

We finished our hike and went sightseeing in time for our departure. This vacation is definitely one for the books, but man is it good to be back home! When we arrived, Alessia was waiting for us with the fur kids in tow, and Kooper was beside himself with excitement. Rosie, on the other hand, was like, "oh, good, you're back," and ran off to wherever she goes, heh. Love that girl.

Less pulled me aside and told me she left something out of her story when she called yesterday. A rather concerning incident took place, but she didn't want me to worry or cut our vacation short. They were in the living room opening presents when a loud bang startled them. It sounded like an explosion, but the house remained intact, so she searched for the source of the sound. In the kitchen, she found a plume of smoke trailing from the stove. The cabinets and countertops seemed unaffected, so they gathered the presents and went to our house until the smoke cleared. I snorted at the thought that it was our house she referred to when she said the kids were destroying it. I'm sure she cleaned up for us. Anyway, I told her I'd go look at it right away.

I saw Arvin when I came in, so I greeted him before checking out the kitchen. Black char encrusted the stove, and a smoky smell still lingered in the air. How in the world did this happen? I'm thankful to Watcher; no one was hurt, and nothing else was damaged. The stove was toast, so I ordered a replacement and rejoined Arvin in the living room. He seemed a bit bummed, and I thought maybe he was still upset from the explosion. I kinda wish that were the case because he hit me with a question I'd kinda been expecting, but reeeeally hoped they would never ask.

"Do you know my dad?"

My stomach did a flip, and I thought I might get sick.

"Ummm ... I met him once. I wouldn't say I know him, though."

"How come he doesn't live with us?"

"He, uhhhh..."

I shifted in my seat, uncomfortable and a little upset. I still haven't forgiven Jace. What has Less told them about him? I wish we would have developed a game plan when they were babies because I knew this would happen. Still, I don't like lying to children and talking to them like they're inept, so I gave him a very vague truth.

"He, umm, he and your mom didn't get along, so he lives somewhere else now."

It didn't occur to me before that we could have run into him since Mt. Komorebi was where that punk ran off to.

"Do you think he'll come back?" he asked.

"I don't think so."

Before I could ask how he felt about that, I heard the girls screaming outside. I ran toward their frantic voices and saw them running away from the science lab. It was on fire! Flashbacks of my last trauma threatened to paralyze me again, but my child's safety wouldn't allow it. Lex must have heard the screaming too and ran behind me, but I told him to go back inside. The fire spread quickly, just like it did in Maira's kitchen. By the time I got the fire extinguisher, the tent that housed the lab was just a pile of ash! The boys were too close, running around and panicking. I yelled at them to go back inside, but they were scared, just like me.

Desi and Breanna made it to the sidewalk. Knowing they were safe allowed me to focus on quelling the fire. I needed to act fast because if those jars of chemicals broke, I might be a goner. I swept the extinguisher back and forth, hoping it wouldn't spread to the tree branches hanging overhead. Moments later, nothing but smoke and the charred lab remained. My heart raced, and I felt like I wouldn't be able to catch my breath. I was on the verge of breaking down, but I needed to make sure the kids were okay.

They were in pretty bad shape. Arvin cried so hard he could barely stand. Alessia ran out of the house to collect her children, and I hugged Desi and told her she was safe now. I put her to bed and stood outside her door for a moment, processing everything that happened. Sometimes, I envy the impulsive bravery of the macho man. But that's just not me. I get scared, I panic, and I might even cry a little. I'm not ashamed of it. Fires are so unpredictable and super fast. Frankly, I think it's appropriate to fear them. Still, I hope this is the last time I have to go toe to toe with one.

Sophia was kind enough to give me a little space before checking on me, but I would have appreciated her presence sooner. As soon as she wrapped her arms around me, I fell apart. I told her how scared I was, not just of the fire, but all the what ifs that came with it. What if Desi and Breanna hadn't gotten away in time? That one tore me up inside, and I couldn't deal with it, hypothetical or not. But Sophia sweetly reminded me that Desi is safely sleeping right behind us. Alessia's kids are also safe. And I am safe. That's so true. Even beyond this situation. I'm always safe with her, and it's been that way since the very beginning. I love her so much.

i am mentally disabled. it is not ableist of me to look for myself in fictional characters, nor is it ableist to find parallels in how i am treated by my loved ones and the world at large. i should not have to disclose my disability to get a pass to talk about the possibility of characters being disabled without getting called ableist.

however, i am going to take the opportunity to clarify my intent with this post. i’m not saying that such a demeaning attitude would be justified or acceptable. i’m also not saying sid’s actions in and of themselves suggest anything about his mental abilities. i AM saying that the actions of those AROUND sid say a lot about sid himself. my post is drawing parallels between what we know of how panem treats mental disability and what we’ve seen of sid and haymitch’s relationship. it’s notable how a child with some sort of intellectual disability would be treated in panem. that’s especially true in a book which is explicitly about optics.

first, we have textual evidence of the attitude of district 12 toward mentally disabled people. namely, the way katniss describes greasy sae’s granddaughter, and the way the people of the hob “treat her as a sort of pet.” we also have evidence of how the capitol treats mentally disabled people, in that peacekeepers executed a boy in 11 for taking home a pair of night glasses. whatever understanding the people of the districts have about disability is extremely limited. whatever attitude the capitol has toward the disabled is cruel. the word “simple” was in quotes because katniss regularly uses the term “simpleminded” to describe people with mental disabilities.

as i said in the original post, sid is behaving like a young child because he is a young child. what is notable is how HAYMITCH reacts to sid. from these two small excerpts, we can already identify a sharp contrast between how haymitch thinks and how he acts. internally, he’s frustrated and worried about the reaping. externally, he’s messing around with sid and tossing him on the bed. like with prim, that doesn’t mean anything in and of itself. but when paired with the line about having to explain reaping day to sid, i think it says a lot about sid himself that haymitch and their mother are willing to tolerate insolence about the capitol on reaping day. and that’s what being joyous on reaping day is. insolence.

second, i fundamentally believe that a 10 year old would understand the reaping and the games. we have tons of textual evidence that the brutality of the games is shoved down their throats from a young age. it’s talked about on tv year-round. katniss consistently references games she remembers from when she was younger than her dad’s passing, which happened when she was 11. she goes so far in catching fire as to describe finnick’s games with details, for which she was 7 at most. she notes that she doesn’t remember as much about the games in the years succeeding his death, suggesting she does remember the ones preceding it.

vick, gale’s brother, is also 10. in catching fire, he tells katniss that gale is out hunting. if the hawthornes can trust vick with the knowledge that gale is out committing a capitol offense, and vick is old enough to discern that katniss is a safe person to entrust with that knowledge, 10 year old vick definitely knows what the reaping is. at the very least, he knows enough to be quiet and compliant in front of peacekeepers. further, on parcel day, vick chooses to forego medicine to ensure his siblings had something sweet, too. if he’s old enough to understand scarcity, he’s old enough to comprehend why the scarcity exists.

not to mention, irl, when my brother was 10, he was assigned the first book to read for school. he couldn’t sleep for a week after watching the movies. we had many conversations about panem and its real-world parallels. teachers would not assign the books to 10 year olds if there was nothing to gain from teaching them.

even if you don’t buy that a 10 year old would understand the reaping, haymitch says “i wonder if it’ll be me or ma who sits him down beforehand and explains about his role…” the “beforehand” reads to me as though this is a conversation that’s going to happen right before sid’s first reaping. we know for a fact from prim that 12 year olds don’t discover for the first time that they’re entering the pool the day of their first reaping.

most importantly, they are literally required to attend the reaping before they’re in the pool. they’ve seen it happen for over a decade before they actually participate. the distinction between former reapings and sid’s first year of eligibility is that, like all the other kids his age, for the first time, he won’t be with his mother. he’ll be on his own, responsible for his own actions, with no one to protect him or explain if he misbehaves. it’d be one thing for him not to know where to stand. it’s another thing entirely for haymitch to make a point of mentioning that they’d need to teach sid to be quiet and look nice. unless there’s some reason we don’t know that will make sid’s first year of eligibility his first year attending the reaping (maybe he was on death’s door the first ten years of his life, idk), i truly can’t think of another good reason that sid would not already know how to act at the reaping.

y’all i really think sid abernathy is intellectually and/or developmentally disabled. idk if this is a common belief or not, but after the audio excerpt i’m more convinced than ever. here’s why:

1. sid’s dialogue and behavior

“you said be your rooster. you said you wanted to get to the woods at daylight.”

“haymitch!” wails sid. “the sun’s coming up!”

sid’s language and cadence suggest a young child. which makes sense; he’s 10, which is a young child. so it’s consistent that haymitch would tell sid to be his “rooster,” which is, of course, a callback to “tuck your tail in, little duck.” however, while katniss’ pet name for prim is humorous and light-hearted, her intention in using it is to make prim feel better facing the imminent reaping.

sid’s joy on reaping day, especially the reaping day of the second quarter quell, suggests sid is at best aware but unconcerned about the day’s proceedings, but realistically, that he doesn’t know or understand whatsoever what will occur. as far as he’s concerned, the most important event of the day is haymitch’s birthday.

granted, sid is 10, and prim, at 12, is reaping age. but there’s no way he can avoid the truth about the games or reaping day at school. and haymitch “resistance is not an option” abernathy would not indulge such wanton disregard for the dangers of the day. acting like the reaping isn’t happening is insolence in and of itself. unless, of course, sid’s behavior is not disregard, but true ignorance. and the only way he’d be ignorant of the reaping is if he is, at least in the eyes of haymitch and his mother, incapable of understanding it.

2. sid needing an explanation about the reaping

“i wonder whether it'll be me or ma who sits him down beforehand and explains about his role in the reaping, how he had to look nice and keep his mouth shut and not cause any trouble. even if the unthinkable happens and his name gets drawn, he's got to suck it up, put on the bravest face he can muster and climb onto that stage, because resistance is not an option.”

as implied by sid’s happy attitude in the excerpt, and now confirmed by the audio clip, sid will need to have the reaping explained to him when he turns 12. but in his worry about sid’s first reaping, haymitch is concerned with telling sid step-by-step what to do. and it’s not just about where to stand or the proceedings themselves. he will have to explain to sid that he needs to be quiet and docile.

no kid in district 12 would need it explained to them how to act on reaping day by age 12. that is, unless the normal district 12 peacekeepers would otherwise know that the kid means no harm in stepping out of line. on reaping day, with peacekeeper reinforcements and cameras, the same lenience would not apply. an intellectual disability would explain not only that, but why haymitch and their mother intend to keep sid in his happy ignorance as long as they can.

3. sid’s death within two weeks of haymitch’s defiance

the most common question about snow’s punishment of haymitch is why he didn’t have sid or lenore dove reaped. on lenore dove, it would be too obvious to reap haymitch’s girl just a year or two after haymitch’s games. that’s especially true if haymitch’s insolence is so egregious as to warrant a punishment as severe as the death of all his loved ones. after a year or two lenore dove would be aged out. to create some plausible deniability for the capitol citizens, the only realistic option for snow to reap would be sid.

with sid, he would have nine years to choose exactly the right moment to punish haymitch in this way. if sid is anything like prim, he’d be beloved in the capitol during haymitch’s games, largely for his youth and innocence. but katniss herself considers prim to be reaped. that’s a particularly strong possibility once prim was older, and thus less angelic and harmless in the eyes of the capitol. even still, rue is evidence that age is not reason enough for the capitol to grow sour at the idea of any tribute’s reaping.

so why wouldn’t snow wait it out for sid? i’m sure we’ll get plenty of reasons in the book, but the best explanation is that it would create blowback for snow if sid was reaped, regardless of his age or how beloved he is in the capitol. the most realistic scenario why that would be true is if sid is too naive and “simple” to be a threat, even as an older teen in a strong, adult-like body.

that’s not to say the capitol is “above” reaping a disabled child (see: the boy from 10 in the 75th and wovey in the 10th). but a beloved younger brother of a quarter quell victor who is ALSO developmentally disabled? the optics would be terrible for snow. that’s especially true if the capitol’s attitude toward people with mental disabilities is anything as patronizing as that of the people of district 12 (see: the people at the hob treating greasy sae’s granddaughter like a pet out of ignorance rather than malice).

4. it’s great device to explain the games to the audience without too much info-dumping

we’re going to spend much of the games in haymitch’s head. even in the midst of a battle royale, that can get boring really fast. that issue was avoided in tbosas by snow’s narration, since the boring bits of lucy’s gray’s time in the games were easily supplemented by snow’s life in the capitol.

with katniss, the quiet parts of the games were broken up with flashbacks. the flashbacks served double duty of keeping things interesting AND creating character development/worldbuilding. we saw katniss’ father’s death, her interaction with peeta, her friendship with gale, and her life at home with her mother and prim. her father’s death explained her character, the bread incident her feelings about peeta, her friendship with gale her worldview, and prim/her mother the inter-12 seam/town tensions as well as katniss’ motivations.

unlike with katniss, though, we know a lot about who haymitch is and what happened to him. we don’t need as much basic worldbuilding (and i doubt he’d have much more information than katniss does at this point, anyway), so the only things left are his family and district 12. for haymitch’s family, which is 100% seam in a way katniss’ is not, we’re going to need a new lens through which to view 12. it can’t *just* be typical single-mother seam life; we got most of that through katniss and gale. haymitch’s story has to provide a new angle.

i think that additional layer *has* to be sid. haymitch, unlike katniss, was himself reaped—what is motivating his survival? what makes him different than all the others in the seam, who are reaped to an inevitable death? a clear explanation could be that sid is incapable of surviving if haymitch dies. even with their mother working, everyone has to contribute. and if haymitch doesn’t have a gale, sid’s protection is even less guaranteed.

sure, haymitch might just have the same maternal instinct katniss has for prim, but that’s one of the key distinctions between them in the trilogy. haymitch loves peeta and katniss like they’re his own, and yet he lies to and betrays them in a way that katniss considers unconscionable. and, imo, if it’s as simple as haymitch wanting to protect sid’s innocence like katniss wants to protect prim’s, the similarities between them become less parallels and more replicas. what’s the point of sid’s death if katniss and haymitch are so similar that the loss of their siblings conveys the same message?
