Theories for the new Playful Land Halloween Event
Mind Control and/or body Possession is a huge theme during the event
In the PV, we see the SSRs Ortho, Kalim and Ace, and when the camera pans for a close-up on their face, their eyes definitely don't look normal. They just look so... SOULLESS, you know? Just compare the two pictures of Ace below, the first one being from the PV and the second his usual look.
2. STRINGS, STRINGS EVERYWHERE!
Also the constant imagery of strings and the deliberate choice to not only include them into the character outfits, but make them the focal point. Even their poses in the respective cards are all in a marionette pose. Makes it feel like the boys are just puppets strung along to the whims of their puppeteer. Considering this event is based off Pinocchio, it just feels on theme.
3. The "mask" that they're all wearing resembles tree branches (there's even a leaf growing out from it)
Playful Land is based off Pleasure Land in Pinocchio where children are allowed to do whatever they want without laws/restrictions, which may seem great at first, but the hidden truth is that the children eventually get cursed to turn into donkeys. I'm guessing something similar happens here, but instead of donkeys, they get turned into (wooden) puppets as the mask gradually spreads all over their bodies and taking over control.
4. There's a "greater evil' backing Honest John and Gideon
At first I was thinking the tree mask could be one of their Unique Magic, but realistically speaking, it's not feasible to continuously maintain your UM due to blot accumulation. So, what if these two are only the face of Playful Land, their jobs being to advertise and scam unknowing people to visit, while there is a different entity that is able to trap the visitors by taking possession of their bodies and making them incapable of ever leaving. Maybe the duo made some sort of deal where they would help out, in exchange they won't get cursed.
I LOVE,LOVE,LOVE circus themes in general all thanks to Sentimental Circus from San-X (who also makes Rilakuma/Sumikkogurashi), so this event has got me super hyped up! It's been a while since I theorized TWST and this just gave me the motivation to do so. The fact Leona is getting a card too is a nice bonus. Event is dropping this Friday and I'm definitely pulling, hope everyone has fun and Happy Halloween!

Hi, Miss Raven! What're your thoughts on the new characters' designs and the new cards we're getting?
[You can see the designs for the Halloween 2023 cards and other related TWST news here!]
I'll post my general thoughts below! I unfortunately don't know enough about Pinocchio myself to point out all the little easter eggs in their outfits, so I'll leave that to those who are more knowledgeable than me.
***Spoilers below the cut!!***
Regarding the NRC boys' looks overall, I think it's a very fun theme and very fitting for the location of the event. I like that they all still wear masks, just in a different context than in Glorious Masquerade. One thing I did notice is that the masks seem... same-y? Like they all resemble thick tree roots or something like that. So maybe they aren't masks at all, but they're associated with whatever the conflict in the story is. (I previously suggested mind control or the loss of consciousness, so maybe the "roots" play into that???) You can see the marionette theme Yana was going for, as well as some design elements from Black Butler's circus arc, very clearly. The poses for each of the boys, even the R cards, are extremely dynamic and imply a strong sense of movement. The ribbons are such a simple detail that contributes a lot to this sense of whimsy and flow.
Some comments I have on specific designs and poses:
Suspenders are so... Trey đ THERE'S REALLY NOTHING ELSE FOR ME TO ADD HERE, THEY JUST SUIT HIM
I like it when Trey makes these kind of slightly sus but plausibly deniable faces... He should make more of them...
I can't see the front of Jack's outfit that well, so I don't know if I can fully comment on it??? But I can see his. Like. Physique... coming through... That chest to waist ratio/j
Seeing Jack's tail like that kinda weirds me out. I think that's the first time we've gotten a "full" view of how the tails look coming out of the pants??? So maybe I'll get more used to it with time...
J WORD MY BELOVED dghgqwktvwukdviu1vdutw1513FR7vuofOTVUofvfaafvfyivs.,bk;mobsdb;ibuafetvuqoffSEythTOTqebivfguovqnafCUtuiUIEtt please ignore my bias 𤥠The way his top hat is angled and how there's a dark blue ribbon around him... It vaguely looks like he's trying to pass as Crowley, LOL
I like how his undershirt is frilled and how he has that sash at his waist it reminds me of the genderbent design for my TWST OC! The fact that both he and Floyd have the eel emblem that resembles a heart is also really cute~
Lilis is my favorite design of the R cards!! There's a very good distribution of ruffles throughout the look, and his knotted skirts fit well with his personal flair.
I'm not a huge fan of the style of hat Cater's wearing (sorry to all the Cay-kun stans out there), but I can appreciate his look. His dress appears more militant than Trey's, and his posing is certainly more aggressive--it's nice to see him in this new light.
FHIBBAILAIBASIADIHBLBUDB EVERY TIME I SEE L*ONA NOW I'M GOING TO THINK OF THE ONE REBLOG I SAW THAT SAID "of course leona has his tits out again" BECAUSE THEY'RE RIGHT, HE'S LITERALLY THE GIRLIE THAT DRESSES SLUTTY ON HALLOWEEN AND SOMEHOW NEVER GETS COLD đ You go, king... Live your best life!!
Love L*ona-sanâs new hairstyle here!! đ
The way Floyd is posed reminds me of those people that walk around on stilts. I think I much prefer the coloration on Floyd's outfit than on Jade's, but I prefer Floyd's jacket to Jade's. I think Floyd's the best of the SR designs!
Shockingly, Vil's look doesn't stand out to me that much??? I enjoy his sash, but I don't immediately pick up on anything in his illustration that catches my eye.
His pose resembles that of a ballerina, which just makes me think about the time he assigned Epel and Deuce extra (ballet) dance lessons in book 5 ajdbhasivldsadued
Of the SSRs, Ace is definitely my favorite one. He just looks so dramatic soaking up that spotlight and trying to look cool while doing it... Bro's 100% thinking, "heheheheh, I'm SO awesome :))" in his head.
Ace's design also reminds me a lot of Jack Hearts (from Disney Villain Recruiters). Not sure if it was intentional or not, but I'm definitely super into it!
HHNNNNNGNGHGHHGHGNGNGHHGHGHGHGHHHHH I WANNA BITE HIS HEAD OFF AND BULLY HIM SO BAD, I WANNA WIPE THAT SMIRK OF FHIS DUMB FACEe Am I seriously about to revert back to my Brat Loving era for Trappola... Maybe so...
I was pretty much expecting a SSR Ace (because he's a trickster with a brother that works in an amusement park) and Ortho (literally a robot that became a real boy), but Kalim took me by surprise. In hindsight, I guess it makes sense though...? Kalim has a similar immature vibe as the other two (plus I do remember there being this one scene in Aladdin where the Sultan was dressed like a jester that was being maneuvered on puppet strings).
It's great that Kalim gets to be a little out of his usual element and make darker, more mysterious expressions like what we see in his new illustration. I'm not sure if I entirely agree with how he's dressed (the yellow jacket is WAY too bright), but I love his his coattails (???) trail behind him in waves.
OR-KUN MY SON đđđ As is the case with all of his gears, I adore how the devs creatively adapted clothing into metal parts for Ortho! The half-caplet is easily the best part of the whole look for me (the pattern on it reminds me of stars falling down)--and because Ortho has a smaller stature, the type of hat he's wearing isn't as offputting; it actually looks very cute on him.
ANYWAY, VERY HAPPY THAT ORTHO GETS TO HAVE A HALLOWEEN SSR TO MATCH HIS BROTHER'S HALLOWEEN SSR FROM LAST YEAR... They match!!!
... Is that the fucking cricket on Orthoâs cape... and the goldfish on Kalimâs scarf⌠AND THE CAT ON ACEâS WAIST⌠What does this meeeean đ¤Ą
And now for my thoughts on the two new boys!! Honestly?? I don't actually have much to comment on in this regard because I try to reserve my judgment of characters until I've actually seen them in action. I haven't seen Pinocchio either, so I don't have a strong basis for what their personalities would be like based on their original Disney counterpart. I only vaguely understand that Honest John and Gideon trick children into visiting Pleasure Island... That's it, that's the full extent of my knowledge on that pair. I don't have any other expectations going in other than "yeah, these two are going to swindle me".
Gidel looks like a mix of Cheka and Ruggie to me (because of the hair and the eye shape). He seems like heâll be the other guyâs goon, similar to how Jade and Floyd/Ruggie follow Azul/Leona. Nothing else for me to add, Gidel seems alright⌠Just a silly lilâ guy!
I have more⌠mixed thoughts on Ferro. One one hand, he looks like the exact kind of shady bitch Iâd love. (You know, the ones that smile and lie and manipulate and drive a knife into your back andâLOOK, HEâS VERY J WORD CORE) On the other hand, Iâm beating back the âyou like cat/dog boysâ allegations from my friends, so đ I canât give in so easily/j
Looks-wise, Ferroâs iteration of the rat tail hair is not as ugly to me as Malleusâs is. (I think itâs because it looks more windswept!) I also really like how he dressesâvery dapper đ and he can pull off green eyeshadow well!
Iâm wondering how theyâll make Ferro different than the other con artists weâve seen so far *eyes Octavinelle* but Iâm keeping my hopes up since the devs did a good job remixing the âI have a dead brother and I feel immense guilt about itâ backstory for Rollo (when Idia had a similar one). Looking forward to that~
Iâm sure my thoughts will chance once I actually get to see them in the event! ^^ Iâll keep you posted. For now, Iâll keep cautious. (Actually, this fan art basically summarizes my current feelings on the two! Iâm Rollo/j)

If we hypothetically wanted to make an oc for this AU, would there be anything weâd have to keep in mind so we donât contradict or mess up any established lore?
Love the AU so much :))
You can basically do two things!!
-Make your oc a ruler [plus make your own dimension]
Rulers are kinda like kings or queens of a world. They're strongly connected to the dimension and pretty much immortal [meaning as in they only can't die to unnatural causes] [also they usually have more or unique details that differentiate them from their residents]
All the dimensions have a sort of theme and so the rulers are usually always based around that theme of their dimension
-Make your oc a resident [and have them live in an existing dimension or your own]
Residents are also based around the theme of their dimension
If you want to put them in an existing one I can list them!! [Really only a few rn bc I'm reworking some]
Caine's dimension - clowns, marionettes, and all around circus themed yk..
Gangles dimensions - bugs and insects
Jaxs dimension - wild west in the sky, everyone has feathers and/or wings
Ragathas dimension - plushies, dolls, and sleepytime things.
I'm awful at listing these lol,, but if you ever wanna know what some of the dimensions look like I'd be happy to explain them the best I can

I just finished watching what if, and I was wondering, what if the creeps never became The creeps? What do you think they would be?
angry bc i typed all of this out and tumblr ATE all of my words (my phone turned off and it didnât save and it was completely my fault) and i am SUING tumblr
Jeff - After living off of his parents for a while, he got a full time job at an animal shelter. He creates music on the side and has a handful of followers. He never talks to his family. Heâs made his own between people heâs met online and friends heâs made in real life.
Liu - As the oldest, his parents pressured him into college. He pursued a law degree, and attempts to call Jeff often. Jeff always pretends to be working, busy, or doesnât have his phone on him. Heâs a lot more successful than his brother, being a popular lawyer and all, and even keeps in contact with his parents.
Jane - Became a healthy dose of a Government hired P.I. Sheâs amazing at her job and anyone from her childhood would never be able to recognize her. Jeff ran into her while she was stationed in her hometown for a brief moment. But she still hasnât forgiven him for ruining her chance with Liu. It was nice to see him again. Maybe in another universe theyâll actually like each other.
Nina - She does fashion on the side, and hops from job to job, mostly in the fashion and makeup industry. Sheâs not quite sure where she wants to go in life.
Eyeless Jack - Carried onto pursuing his major as a surgeon. When the incident happened he was already in school, halfway through the path of a lifelong dream of his. After school, heâs one of the top surgeons in the state.
Ben - Just some dude in IT. He works for a cable company, and helps old ladies connect to the internet or restart their router from his cubicle. By the ghoul possessing his brain from the whole cult incident, it created a super-genius tech savvy ghost. But without it, heâs just some guy that grew up with an N64 and a love for computers. He also plays a lot of PC games, and has a discord of online friends. His best friend across the country works in an animal shelter and is free in the early hours of the morning.
Tim/Brian - Continued through college and lives a normal life on the daily. Brian has a major in film history, and Tim graduated with a psychology degree.
Toby - Lyra still ended up dying somehow, but as a less exciting meningitis case as opposed to a car crash caused by Slender. Toby still stood up to his father, and ended up escaping with his mom to a new life not too long after. He has a degree in childcare and works with kids, he also has a nice girlfriend that heâll marry one day.
Kate - Full-time baker. After moving out of the woods of West Virginia, she moved across the country into a small city where a baker took her under her wing. She was taught how to bake, make coffee, and run a shop. They eventually fell in love and got married. :)
Clockwork - The baker. She opened a shop in the city to escape her abusive home. It was a hit with cute animal themed bread biscuits and cakes.
Laughing Jack - Technically he was an angel gifted to Isaac, but maybe in a normal universe he was part of a traveling circus in the 1800s. Maybe in a normal universe he kept his colors.
Lost Silver - A repair tech. He has his own little shop in a rather large mall. He fixes phones, computers, gaming systems, heâll even dabble with lights and TVs. The shop doubles as a card shop where people can play retro arcade games and pokemon tournaments.
Jason - A Universal Studios imagineer. He has unlimited potential for his ideas, and has one of the best animatronics worldwide, sporting for $19.2M. A human-like animatronic, taking on the role of a puppeteer that controls small marionettes.
Helen - A quite popular self-taught artist on the east coast, but on the side he paints murals on the sides of buildings for businesses. He moved to America with his grandparents after the bullying in his homeland got too terrible to handle. His mother got the help she needed.
Hobo Heart - A pop-emo heart-throb of the Y2Ks. He got his heart broken and never let it go. Created a hit song about catching his girlfriend cheating and calling a cab, while heâs taking a smoke, and sheâs taking a drag. And heâs going to bed and his stomach is siiiick, now she takes off her dress now-
Sally - Destroyed the monarchy and grew up to become the president of England. Achieved world peace. She still has tea parties. ALT: Became the CEO of a sock puppet company.

Disney Dreamland - Part 4: Fantasyland
(I had already posted about Mysteryland previously, which retroactively makes it Part 3. So we're moving on to the next part.)
Quite possibly the largest of the five lands, probably even beating out my mega-Adventureland.Â
Small World Gardens
Located behind Small World, this sprawling area would transition into Storybook Town Square. Flower arrangements inspired by Keukenhof in the Netherlands. Similar to Parisâs Fantasyland, there would be a couple rivers running through the garden with lovely bridges to cross over them.Â
Dumbo the Flying Elephant : The Masquerade Circus could be positioned near the Mysteryland/Fantasyland border so that the back of the tents could serve as a backdrop for the Dumbo ride, which would have its own little area in the gardens. I was at a loss on where else to place this ride, but I stubbornly wanted to include it as it is currently the only attraction to be found in all 6 existing castle parks and I didn't want to break that streak.
"Casey Jr. Circus Train": Doesn't have to specifically be Dumbo-themed, I just really want a cute novelty train to wind through the garden, with cute bridges to pass over the walkways and rivers.
âSwan Boatsâ: Paddle boats. I say âswan boatsâ but they donât have to be just swans, but could also resemble other birds such as ducks, geese, and flamingos.
Symphony Gazebo: A gazebo in the garden for a live band to play classical music.
âWindmill snack standâ: I saw a picture of the Old Mill in Paris and thought it looked so charming. German pretzels.Â
Storybook Town Square
The town follows in the footsteps of Ananheimâs 1983 overhaul with each building having its own unique look. Would feature a fluid mix of Bavarian and British architecture. The Bavarian half of the town on the west contains âPinocchio Squareâ and the theater. The British half on the east contains Peter Pan, Little Nemo (even though Nemo is American), and Mr. Toad. A large fountain stands in the center. Cobblestones would pave the ground. I want this area to evoke the feeling of Parisâs Fantasyland as well as Efteling in the Netherlands .Â
Pinocchioâs Daring Escape: Focuses more on escaping Pleasure Island. The only other thing I would change is have all the sets and animatronics appear to be carved out of wood, and have real clothes on the animatronics, for a more high-quality âhand madeâ look, the implication being the entire ride is a life-sized puppet show. The ride building along with the toy shop and restaurant form a smaller âPinocchio Squareâ, which would include a smaller fountain with a statue of Pinocchio.
Geppettoâs Toy Shop: Would feature regular retail plush toys, as well as old fashioned toys like wooden marionettes and wind-ups, as well as cuckoo clocks. Christmas ornaments can also be purchased here.  Â
Pinocchioâs Pizza Place: Italian cuisine. Basically the Pinocchio Village Haus in Orlando, but with an alliterative name, and also some of the pizzas have toppings decorated to look like Pinocchio smiley faces. Quick service. Â
Once Upon a Time Theatre: Hosts live indoor stage shows. While any show with Disney musical medleys is fine, I would much prefer original shows of rarely-featured stories, such as the other tales from the 1001 Arabian Nights, or a stage version of Disney's Return to Oz (which I personally love better as an Oz adaptation than MGM's movie; 2013's Oz the Great and Powerful was meh). Building design would be modeled after the new Fantasyland Forest Theatre in Tokyo.
âGerman restaurantâ: Table service.Â
Flight to Neverland: Would utilize the best aspects from each version of the ride. For example, I love that Shanghaiâs queue is themed to a London park (Kensington Gardens?), and the chimneys in Parisâs loading dock blow smoke. The building facade would definitely have a functioning clock tower, in homage to Big Ben, but designed to fit with the small town aesthetic. The name change is simply because I feel like guests actually take on the role of the Darling children more than they do Peter.
Little Nemo in Slumberland: Little Nemo may not be a Disney IP, but it has such rich and vibrant imagery, I think it could work really well as a Disney ride. Not to mention itâs in the public domain, so there shouldnât be any legal issues. In many ways itâs very similar to Peter Panâs Flight, so maybe it could also help balance the wait times between the two rides. Guests take on the role of Nemo and ride flying beds (or at least, benches that look like beds, with a headboard and a footboard) that soar out the bedroom window. What follows are awe-inspiring, almost surreal, scenes of Slumberland. Things start to distort and become chaotic as the dream turns into a nightmare. Before anything too awful happens, guests âwake upâ back in Nemoâs bedroom while the voice of Nemoâs mother scolds us for eating before bed. For visual reference, I recommend the Osamu Dezaki pilot film that was created during the movieâs development, though I obviously wouldnât put the giant Sauron eye in the ride.Â
Mr. Toadâs Wild Ride: Orlandoâs former double-track ride, but with Anaheimâs building exterior. I never got to experience this ride and I really want to.
Ever After Castle
Here it is, the traditional centerpiece of all Disney parks, now the centerpiece of Fantasyland instead. I personally think of most Disney castles as tall but not wide. This castle would be slightly different from the traditional Disney castle by taking up more ground space. I hate to sound blasphemous, but for this castle Iâm thinking of something similar to Shrekâs Far Far Away Castle in Universal Singapore but with more detailed ornate decorations like Parisâ castle, and the outer walls slightly covered in ivy vines for a more inviting, homely look. It would also stand on top of an elevated foundation, surrounded by a moat. There would be a large courtyard in front of the main castle building, with the carousel placed in the center of it. The gift shop and the meet-and-greet are each placed on either the west or east side of the courtyard. The north of the courtyard would feature the restaurant on the ground floor, the entrance to the underground boat ride, and stairs to the second floor attraction.Â
Cinderellaâs Carriage Carrousel: Regarding the visual design, I want it to look like the pumpkin carriage turned into a carousel. The canopy could include fiber optic fairy dust that lights up at night.
Be Our Guest Restaurant: French cuisine. I really like Tokyoâs Beauty and the Beast ride and would love to import it, but I respect the OLCâs exclusivity rights too much. I wondered if I could make it a combination ride and restaurant where each table is a ride vehicle, but I worried that would cause motion sickness which is a big no-no for a restaurant. At the very least, for my version I would love to have animatronics perform âBe Our Guestâ every 30 minutes or so. Also, perhaps every hour, Belle and Beast performers would come out onto the dance floor and invite guests to waltz with them. Hot Take: The Grey Stuff is very obviously a savory food as it is clearly presented on a tray of hors d'oeuvres in the movie. But since the version currently offered in the parks has been imprinted in fansâ minds I think itâs best to offer two versions: Savory (chicken liver pate) as an appetizer and Sweet (cookies and cream) as a dessert.
Royal Meet-and-Greet: I personally do not care much for meet and greets, but for the people that do, here you can meet the Princesses, some of the Princes, as well as non-Princesses such as Giselle, Esmeralda, and TinkerBell.Â
Kingdom Treasures gift shop: Based on the Tokyo shop of the same name.Â
Crystal Caverns Canal: Boat ride underneath the castle. My first idea for this ride was basically Voyage to the Crystal Grotto from Shanghai, if all the character statues were built out of crystals and mosaic tiles. Then I realized, thereâs probably too much IP already in the land, so I think there could be an original story about the crystals being a source of magic for the kingdom, and have scenes of wizards and fairies harvesting the crystals and creating experiments with them. Sort of a âtour of the workshopâ kind of ride. Iâm thinking of something with the same vibes as Dreamflight in Efteling.Â
Merlinâs Library / Yen Sidâs Library: Located on the second floor of the castle. Originally I wanted a ride in a similar vein to Symbolica in Efteling, but with a story like that of Mystic Manor in Hong Kong. Then I wondered if it would be feasible to have a ride in the second story, so Iâm also okay with this being a walkthrough attraction. I feel either wizard could work here. Merlin is the more well-known wizard, but Yen Sid is easier to create an original backstory for. The basic gist of the attraction is you wander around a library with little vignettes of magical items operating on their own; a quill pen writing by itself, a large spell book turning its own pages, floating books sorting themselves on the shelves, etc. There could even be some interactive elements, such as paintings that change, or opening a book can project a scene âcoming to lifeâ and âescapingâ the book.
Fairytale Gardens: Walkthrough garden. There would be lovely little vignettes scattered throughout, including Snow Whiteâs wishing well, a giant beanstalk, and The Sword in the Stone placed in a little alcove in the castleâs outer wall. This would be outside the courtyard. Maybe off to the side, to the west, wrapping around the outer castle wall, next to Shadowland Forest.
Shadowland Forest
Inspired by the Black Forest of Germany, this area features spookier attractions. West of the castle, shares the border with Mysteryland and the Gravity Falls area. There would be plenty of fir, spruce, and pine trees to make it feel like an actual forest, maybe even hide some of the attractions from view.Â
Snow Whiteâs Scary Adventures : Building facade would include the Evil Queen peeking out her window. I would place the building nearest to Storybook Town Square, at the edge of the forest.
âGingerbread Factory Tourâ : Based on my twisted Hansel and Gretel dark ride idea. Guests are given a tour of gingerbread golems at work (something like Tim Burtonâs version of Wonkaâs factory if it were more surreal and set in 1800s Germany), then are chased through obstacles, such as lollipop blades swinging from the walls, and peppermint stick darts, by Hansel and Gretel themselves. Theyâve been very distrustful of adults after their parents abandoned them in the woods, and after the witch held them captive. They deem the guests harmless, and let them go but warn them to never come back.
Candy Carnival shop: The ride would exit into a shop themed to a candy carnival safe haven that Hansel and Gretel built for children lost in the woods. Would feature gingerbread treats and a nice selection of old-fashioned candies and German sweets. Guests can also watch bakers and candymakers at work. (Despite the name, there are no actual rides here, just animatronic decorations.)
Dragon Mountain: I wanted a unique âMountainâ ride, much like how the Matterhorn and Everest are unique to their parks. And dragons are cool. Originally this was going to be based on Maleficent, but now Iâm leaning more towards an original story. And to put a neat spin on things, instead of a fire-breathing dragon, it would be a wintery ice dragon! I would also love it if the dragon was not portrayed as a mindless, violent beast hoarding treasure, but a parent protecting their child from intruders.
I initially wanted a sub-land recreating Halloween Town (with a spooky "Scare-ousel") but I felt Fantasyland was already overrun with too many IPs (and seven carousels is enough for one park), so here an area is set aside for seasonal Nightmare Before Christmas or Villains themed events, leaving the Haunted Mansion free during the holidays.Â
Disney Dreamland Railroad Fantasyland station: Styled after the ruins of a medieval castle. Located on the edge of the forest near Ever After Castle, next to the entrance to Winter Village.
Wonderland
East of the castle, on the border with Create-It-Land. While there would be plenty of natural green, there would also be an abundant mix of giant pink, purple, and turquoise âwildlifeâ, as seen in the initial scrapped concept art for Tokyoâs expansion. Giant mushrooms in place of benches, trees decorated with misleading signs, lamp posts that look like giant flowers. March Hare would definitely be included as a walk-around character alongside Hatter and Alice. People often forget the tea party took place at the Hareâs and mistakenly believe Hatter to be the host, and I will not stand for this March Hare erasure. I would also have plenty of card soldiers roaming around, âpatrollingâ the area.
Down the Rabbit-Hole: An upside-down funhouse with wonky mirrors, and trick doors galore! A hall of doors in the end would lead into the maze. I was thinking there could probably also be a madhouse ride portion where guests can experience the room actually turning upside down; inspired by Villa Volta in Efteling.Â
Wonderland Maze: As much as I like the Alice in Wonderland ride in Anaheim, I personally feel that Wonderland is a world that is best experienced up close and at your own pace, which a maze perfectly embodies. While the maze would obviously be themed to classic animated Alice like the Paris version, it would have different environments, like Shanghaiâs Tim Burton version. First half of the maze would be a forest-like environment with giant plants and singing flowers. Second half would have rose bushes, fancy iron fences, and carved stone walls and statues for the Queen of Heartâs castle area. There would be a handful of tiny doors scattered throughout that guests can crawl through as shortcuts. Among the character statues scattered around the maze, I really want to include the Mock-Turtle and Gryphon, based on their designs from the Jell-O commercial, perhaps on a sandy beach shore by a small fountain / pond.
House of Cards Banquet Hall: Inspired by the Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall in Tokyo. Would follow the same eccentric and colorful design scheme, but I want it to look like a stone castle made out of cards. Definitely would have lovely stained glass windows. Desserts include Royal Heart Tarts. They could also come in souvenir cups and plates like the ones found in Tokyo.
Mad Tea Party: Would have a canopy roof to protect from the weather and direct sunlight, but I also wouldnât mind a stained-glass version. Or even a canopy made of trees. Teacup designs would be a mix of various patterns from all versions (except Orlandoâs, I do not care for the zigzag scribbles). Would also include the giant teapot with the Dormouse in the center. To help with queue waits, Iâd even have two ride systems, much like how Orlando doubled their Dumbo ride. One could even be themed to the Hatter while the other to the March Hare.
March Hareâs tea shop: Would have the same building design as March Hare Refreshments in Paris. Would sell several varieties of tea, Unbirthday Cake, and macarons. Could also feature a long table with interactive tea things to play with, like Shanghai does at the end of its maze, and plenty of fancy chairs for photo-ops.
Mad Hatterâs hat shop: Hats, Mickey ears, and other headgear. To match the March Hareâs chimney ears, this building would resemble a large top hat. Would also feature hat racks for photo-ops, like Shanghai does at the end of its maze.
100 Acre Wood
East of Town Square, on the border with Create-It-Land. A tiny little area with tall trees providing shade, a lovely little Poohsticks Bridge over a small river, and a cozy corner for a meet-and-greet with Pooh and friends.
Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day: Basically the same as Poohâs Hunny Hunt in Tokyo, which includes the giant book facade, and the same level of crafted detail and technical marvel throughout the ride, but with scenes added for the ârain, rain, rainâ, and Poohâs hero party as the ending. I would also use Anaheimâs zany color scheme for the Heffalumps and Woozles room with some added special effects for even more zaniness. The rideâs name change is just to both set it apart from the other versions, and because I realized with the exception of Pooh stuck in the honey tree, all the iconic scenes in the ride come from Blustery Day.
Pooh Corner gift shop: Also utilizes the same English cottage look as Tokyoâs.
Hunny Smackerels snack stand: Hunny Pot cupcakes, honeycomb, honey ice cream, and a separate cart for honey popcorn in lovely Pooh-shaped popcorn buckets. It would be really cute if the stand is actually inside a giant tree trunk, with a dutch door counter window for guests to order from.Â
The next three sub-lands would be behind Ever After Castle, outside the perimeter of the railroad tracks border. The entrance to Winter Village is between Shadowland Forest and the castle, while the entrance to Encanto Valley is between Wonderland and the castle. Mermaid Lagoon is directly behind the castle, between the other two sub-lands and only accessible through them. Small mountains would form berms for each sub-land. For reference, think of how Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point, and Toy Story Land are arranged in Hong Kong.
Winter Village
Inspired by my Narnia theme park concept. This entire mini-land would be indoors, to have air-conditioning to sell the illusion of winter, and to preserve the artificial winter setup from the real-life elements outdoors. This mini-land would be round (roughly) so that the glass ceiling that lets in natural light can have a hexagonal snowflake design. At night time thereâd be projections of Northern Lights. NOT Frozen themed. Itâs a cute movie and all, but far overstayed its welcome before it was even released on DVD. Village would be a mix of Russian and Scandinavian architecture. Can be used for a Santa Claus meet-and-greet during Christmas.
Enchanted Snow Palace: The planned but never built ride based on Hans Christian Andersenâs Snow Queen. The concept art looks leagues better than the final product of Frozen Ever After.
âWinter Sleigh Rideâ: Ride through winter scenery in sleighs pulled by reindeer. Technically a dark ride, since the entire subland is indoors, but feels like an outdoor ride.
"Snowball Arcade": I really wanted something to simulate snowball fights, but without the chaos and mess. Here, guests can throw snowballs at targets to win plush prizes.
"Russian cafe": Russian pastries and snacks
"Ice skating rink": Free if you bring your own skates.
Mermaid Lagoon
A scaled-down version of the land in Tokyo DisneySea, without the playground and kiddie rides. Like DisneySea, it would have a lovely seashell castle facade, with the attractions indoors. Unlike DisneySea, there would be a small lake in front with a ship restaurant docked on it.
âUnder the Seaâ: NOT a retelling of the movie, but instead an original story that would take place some time pre-movie. Follows Ariel on one of her outings as she explores the sea looking for new treasures to add to her collection. Final scene could be of Ariel in her grotto after completing her latest trip, but feeling unsatisfied as she wistfully looks at her collection, while instrumentals for âPart Of Your Worldâ softly play in the background.Â
King Tritonâs Concert Hall: Just like the one in Tokyo DisneySea, this would be a 360 degree show with Ariel âswimmingâ in midair above the audience, a giant animatronic Triton, performer puppets of Flounder and Sebastian, and other mixed special effects.Â
Undersea Carousel: Fish carousel. Underwater lighting effects and blows bubbles as it spins.Â
Arielâs Grotto gift shop
Ship restaurant: Mediterranean seafood. I mean, itâs on a human ship thatâs not technically in Tritonâs Kingdom, so I think this gets a pass for serving fish. It could even be themed to Chef Louis for a laugh.Â
âNighttime Water Showâ: Just spitballing an idea, maybe the lagoon could also be used for a nighttime water show a la Fantasmic / World of Color. The viewing area could be across the lagoon from Tritonâs castle; the lights of Tritonâs castle would coordinate with the show.
Encanto Valley
A lovely recreation of the valley, with Casita and a little village area for shops and Colombian dining, and plenty of lush greenery.Â
La Casa Madrigal: I really like @rrdcoocâs idea for Casita as a walkthrough attraction! Itâs so cool! Especially the ideas for Pepa and Luisa's rooms. I wouldnât change much, aside from adding a few extra touches, such as an interactive flower wall in Isabelaâs room that mimics guestsâ silhouettes (like Daniel Rozin's "Mechanical Mirrors"), and maybe a couple themed flat rides to add capacity, such as a flowery swing spinner ride in Isabelaâs room, and a tiny jungle animal carousel in Antonioâs room. In Dolores's room, guests can see sound waves (like that Magic School Bus episode), and Camilo's room can contain "mirrors" with different character models that mimic guests' movements in real time (like VTuber avatars). Also includes a gift shop selling âhomemadeâ fashions and plush toys by Mirabel.
âMagic Realism Art Exhibitâ: While I think the final movie is perfect, I would have loved it if Casita more closely resembled its concept art, which leaned much more heavily into magic realism. This attraction would be a walkthrough art exhibit full of giant optical illusion paintings that guests can pose in for photo-ops. For reference, Iâm recalling the Trick Eye Museum, a temporary art exhibit I went to years ago in Hong Kong.
Encanto Sing-Along: Iâm not always a huge fan of the âbook reportâ shows they do in the Parks, but in this case, most of Encantoâs songs are so specific to the story that removing them from the context of the movie wouldn't work (especially in the case of fan favorite âWe Donât Talk About Brunoâ). The stage can also be used for original Colombian performances, as well as from neighboring Latin American countries.
Julietaâs Arepas: Food cart. These arepas may not heal you, but theyâre magically delicious!Â
Arabian Oasis (scrapped)
Before Encanto was released and became one of my favorite recent movies, my initial idea was to put in an Aladdin-themed area. Not an exact recreation of Agrabah, more like a broad strokes version of Agrabah in the same manner as Arabian Coast in Tokyo DisneySea.
Magic Carpet Ride: A suspension ride in a similar manner as Peter Panâs Flight, using the carpet vehicles. Fly through the Agrabah marketplace, over the desert, and above the clouds. Ride music features instrumentals from âA Whole New Worldâ.
Scheherazadeâs Tales From the 1001 Nights: Stage show.
Flavors of Agrabah: Arabian / Middle-Eastern cuisineÂ
Cave of Wonders gift shop: I think the theming is appropriate considering guests are exchanging money for goods and not stealing them (ideally).

Chapter 32: A Monster's Grief
Word Count: 909
TWs: Themes of grief, death mentions
â¤â¤â¤
He spent the rest of that day, as well as the next, in a complete haze. He only came to reality when he woke up next to Norman on the second morning since Elizabethâs passing.
âHowâre you feeling?â Normanâs voice was cracked. He looked as if he had been crying for as long as William had been mentally absent.
âBloody fucked, is what,â he answered, his own voice hardly better. âMy final heir. My only daughter. Gone, because I canât have one good thing going for me.â
âI-I took care of the restaurant, by the way⌠I didnât want it to be something for you to worry about right now. The police wanted to get a good look at Circus Baby, but you know, theyâve got ash for brains so there was no way they were going to be able to open her up without help from somebody who actually knows what theyâre doing. I shooed them away until you start feeling better. And Iâve been thinking about a cover-up.â
âAnd that is?â
âA gas leak. Especially considering the authorities canât say anything about Circus Baby yet, so nobodyâll be the wiser. You pay a few bribes and thingsâll stay shut up. I⌠Iâm afraid thisâll probably spell the end of your business days, though, Will.â
He sighed heavily. âThank you, sweetheart. Iâll take it into consideration. Youâll do me a favour, won't you?â
âWhat is it?â
âDo some digging on that Mike Schmidtt fellow I hired for Freddyâs⌠if he hasnât kicked the bucket, too.â
âYes sir.â Norman didnât move. William didnât, either.
âWhere have I been, sinceâŚ?â
âWhatâŚ? Oh. You donât remember?â
âNothing.â
âI was told to keep you company. We didnât do much yesterday, just sat in the quiet, really. This is the first time youâve spoken since Circus Babyâs closed for the day, you just kept repeating the usual things youâd expect a man in shock to say while you were being looked at by the health professionals.â
âI see.â
Another pause. âYou should probably take a shower. You never changed into pyjamas. I tried to suggest it to you last night butâŚâ
William nodded slowly. âYes⌠Iâll do that.â He sat up and felt his age settle into him. He buried his face in his aching hands. He sat like that for a good ten minutes, while Norman continued to lay beside him.
âIâm here for youâŚâ
He squeezed his hand, finally leaving the bed. He stripped himself of his shirt. âWhereâs my tieâŚ?â
âOh, somewhere.â
âHuh. Iron these for me,â he draped the shirt over a chair and started with his belt.
âYes sir.â
On the opposite side of town, Michael was in a similar state. Heâd listened to Williamâs cut-off voicemail when he got back from his fifth night at Freddyâs. He knew nothing more than that his sister was dead. Had William done it? Was he going to confess to everything over the phone? Frankly, the cut felt too close to home. Charlie was likely as close as he wanted to get. Elizabethâs death had to be a true, genuine accident. Even more truthful than Evanâs. This meant he was Williamâs last living blood relative, much to each otherâs discontent. He had never met his paternal grandparents. They reportedly returned to England after William moved out, and died there around the time Michael had been born. William did not bother to attend their funeral. Michael considered himself lucky. William was already a contender for shittiest parent of the decade, he didnât need to know what Grandfather Winston and Grandmother Sarah had been like.
âElizabethâs dead,â Michael stated bluntly when he returned to Freddyâs on Monday. There was no weekend shift, so he could keep his actually well-paying job at the mechanicâs shop. Heâd be up for a promotion to manager at this point if it werenât for Freddyâs. The Marionette bristled.
âDid he do it?â Charlieâs voice buzzed with vehement static.
âIâm not sure. I havenât heard anything since he told me over the phone⌠seemed like he was pulled away before he could tell me more. I donât think he wouldâve, honestly. He loved her, even if he had an unconventional way of showing it⌠probably the only one he loved out of us three.â He sighed, wiping his palms on his t-shirt anxiously.
âWe need to stop him--â Charlie suddenly cut herself off with a short gasp. Both of them froze, clearly hearing a key turning in the lock on the front doors.
âThereâs no fucking way,â Michael hissed, turning quickly. The Marionette slipped back into its box, hiding as he went to investigate. He couldnât make out the figure beyond the glass, shrouded in the dark of the twilight, until the door opened and his flashlight blasted them in the face.
âGoddamn--!! Easy there, soldier!â Normanâs voice immediately manifested in a cold sweat on Michaelâs back. With him briefly blinded, Michael took his chance- without hesitation, he clocked him over the head with the heavy flashlight. Norman thudded to the floor, knocked unconscious⌠for the moment. This is bad. This is really bad. With no better ideas in mind, Michael dragged Norman to the breakroom and locked him inside with a skeleton key he had found in the security office. He wished he had tried it on the backroom door before breaking off the handle, but what was done was done. He had bigger fish to fry, now.

How do you think things like theater and entertainment differs between the provinces/races of Tamriel? I imagine bawdy comedies are popular in Cyrodiil while Summerset prefer historical epics
Iâll be totally honest: I donât have loads of time for entertainment, and when Iâm catering for a banquet Iâm too busy behind the scenes to be able to stop and enjoy shows! However, from what I have been able to gather, these are some of the weird and wonderful performances Iâve been lucky enough to watch across Tamriel.
Altmer
The very best entertainers from Summerset are from the House of Reveries, a time-honoured guild of mysterious masked performers who can do anything from acting to dance, music, and magic tricks. Every year, the House puts on a revue featuring the best of their talent, drawing crowds from near and far. I attended one of the revues as a guest a couple of years ago, and had an excellent time! From a historical opera about the Oblivion Crisis to fire-twirlers and a whole orchestra, the House of Reveries is without doubt the most prolific and capable of Tamrielâs entertainers. If youâre able to make it to their home in Summerset, catching any performance is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Argonians
Argonians love music and dance, whether itâs at a tavern or a bonding ceremony! Most famous of their instruments is the vossa-satl, a keyboard instrument thatâs powered by the croaks of frogs (really)! While it sounds absurd if youâve never encountered one, thereâs something beautiful about the tuned croaking that really evokes the ambiance of the deep swamps of Murkmire. Vossa-satls can be played on their own, accompanied with singing and drums, or even are even played on special occasions as quartets. An awful lot of fun to dance to as well!
Bosmer
The Bosmer are known for their entrancing shadow-puppet plays, which people come from far and wide to see. Narrated by a Tale-Spinner, these plays feature puppets made from stiff hide, whose shadows are projected against an opaque leather screen. Itâs accompanied by music played on bone flutes and pipes, drums, and throat-singing that has an almost meditative quality. These puppet shows tell traditional stories Valenwood such as of Falinesti, Yâffre, the Green Lady and Silvenar, and much more. I donât really know what theyâre on about most of the time due to the peculiar use of language and riddles used by Bosmer tale-spinners, but itâs an absolutely riveting way to spend your evening if youâre in Valenwood.
Bretons
Breton theatre is an interactive experience, so put on your dancing shoes and ready those rotten apples! Over-the-top musical comedies and dramas are a favourite of the Province, typically featuring anywhere from a handful to a couple dozen actors and a small band. The audience is encouraged to play along and itâs not uncommon to find yourself hoisted on stage to throw a pumpkin at the villain of the show! Comedic puppet shows like Punch-and-Julian are popular with young and old alike, and use cloth puppets or marionettes which are more detailed than Bosmeri shadow puppets. And of course, nobody loves The Lusty Argonian Maidâs adventures quite as much as the Bretons, so be sure to catch a performance (sometimes a themed costume party, for the saucier citizens) while youâre in High Rock!
Dunmer
Traditional Morrowind entertainment has a strong focus on magic, particularly illusion magic to scintillate the crowd (especially in areas where the Telvanni hold influence). The Dunmer are keen lovers of puppet shows, somewhat like Bosmer shadow puppets, but instead prefer the use of large, doll-like marionettes that are carved to look wonderfully realistic to show the characters and creatures of a bygone age. My favourite was an epic about St. Jiub and his quest to rid Morrowind of cliff racers, and it was accompanied by some frankly terrifying and realistic illusions of cliff racers which soared above the crowd and caused quite a panic! The Brave Little Scrib may thus be the safest bet for beginners to Dunmeri theatre, or those with a weak constitution.
Imperials
When it comes to entertainment, nobody in Tamriel puts on a show quite like the Imperials. The Arena is known for its bloody fights and betting, but has also been used for everything from huge circus performances and opera to the famous mock naval battles. The latter are a spectacular annual event where the arena floor is flooded and real ships are brought in to fight, complete with âpiratesâ, cannons, sword-fighting, and much more! Definitely not suitable entertainment for children, but if you love the ostentatious and over-the-top, be sure to visit the Imperial Arena (or any of the other smaller arenas that dot the Province) for some truly stunning shows.
Khajiit
In addition to their amazing skill at stringed instruments, the Khajiit are known for their dance and acrobatic skills. Traditional dancers in Elsweyr train for years at academies and temples alike, with a training regime that rivals their peers in the martial arts. This training also includes some jaw-dropping acrobatics and contortion, making Khajiiti circuses extremely popular as they travel around, usually as part of a Baandari troupe. Unlike the circuses staged in Cyrodiil, these troupes are usually made of a handful to a dozen performers, each with their own unique talents and abilities. A typical performance usually starts with dancers to warm up the crowd, followed by heart-stopping acts like trapeze, tightrope, and walking over hot coals! If you want to be wowed, be sure to grab a ticket the next time a Khajiiti circus troupe is in town; you wonât be disappointed!
Nords
Youâre probably very aware of the famous Bardâs College of Solitude, one of the most prestigious institutions to study music in all of Tamriel. However, bards do far more than play the lute and sing songs. They are well-versed in recounting tales, especially historical ones (albeit with some embellishment). Youâll be on the edge of your seat listening to amazing original and time-honoured kennings and songs, preferably around the fire with a tankard of mead. While far less ostentatious than most other entertainment youâll find in Tamriel, thereâs nothing quite as cosy as a bardic evening at the tavern.
Orcs
The Orcs arenât generally fans of theatre, but they sure do enjoy entertainment in the form of sports like Vosh ball and wrestling! Sporting events draw huge crowds of all races, meaning that youâll find everything from hot snacks to live music in the arena. Vosh ball is a traditional Orcish sport which has been played for centuries, and is prone to getting violent, so grab a helmet (preferably one with a visor) before you sit down, and enjoy the show! Not feeling like watching? In certain cases, you can even give these sports a go in amateur rounds, but you will be asked to sign a disclaimer formâŚmissing teeth, other injuries, and the occasional death arenât uncommon. Youâve been warned!
Redguards
The Redguards are renowned for their poetry, song, and epic storytelling, often performed by wandering poet-explorers who live off the generosity of strangers. Unlike the traveling bards of Skyrim, youâll usually need to visit these reclusive storytellers yourself, or host one when theyâre in town! Itâs well worth the trouble, as these wandering souls usually love performing with anyone else whoâs game. One of my most memorable nights out was in Sentinel, where bored locals who came to listen to a visiting poet happened to bring all their talents with them. When the story about the Akaviri invasion ramped up, a few musicians struck up a tune, and for some reason a sword-swallower joined in! Entertainment in Hammerfell is a joyous community affair, and no two performances are ever alike.

Pinocchio (1940) Review
Alright, second movie by Disney. Pinocchio, published in February of 1940. Despite being one of Disney's most well-known films, as well as the direct successor to the fantastic Snow White, Pinnochio was originally a box office flop. Not due to people not liking the movie, of course, but there did happen to be a little disagreement in Europe at that point that seemed to be getting everyone's attention. It was rereleased in 1945 to great acclaim.
Unlike Snow White, which is based off of an oral tradition written down by the Grimm Brothers, Pinnochio is based off a book called The Adventures of Pinocchio written in 1883 by a Carlo Collodi. Apparently, book Pinocchio was a little shit. He wanted to become a real boy, but oh man, that little puppet supposedly acted inhuman. That makes sense, given that he's a puppet, but what a change! Disney's little Pinoc (what a cute nickname by the way, good job Jiminy) is a sweet, if gullible and naĂŻve, very human puppet. The Disney-fication of things start early I suppose.
Relatively speaking, Pinocchio has a significantly more complex storyline than Snow White does. Actually, I would argue that it's almost a little confusing. It leads you to the right spots, but it feels very Alice in Wonderland-y at times, with a hint at the dark story and world that the original Pinocchio came from. To summarize: Gepetto the carpenter builds a little puppet boy and wishes upon a star for the puppet boy to become a real boy. A fairy comes down, gives the puppet all the effects of being alive without the actual heartbeat, and claims that to be a real boy Pinocchio needs to be brave and kind, etcetera. Guided by his conscience, who is a somewhat horny creature that claims to be a cricket (more on that later), Pinocchio goes out into the world and hijinks occur.
Honestly speaking, there are some intense themes presented here. This is not the modern animated movie, scared to say that someone died. This movie is down to show a toned down version of human trafficking (Pinocchio getting captured, told to perform, and when he finally failed he'd die), slavery (the donkey boys being sold to salt mines and the circus), and starvation (Gepetto being stuck inside Monstero and discussing his imminent death). I'm honestly pretty excited to see when animated movies get sanitized for any intense themes, if that ever happens or if I've just assumed so. I'll keep an eye out for that. The story is fun and describes themes of morality for kids, and for adults it seems to tell how people can be taken advantage of. It's not like Pinocchio knew smoking or drinking or⌠playing pool I guess? Was bad. He literally was only born yesterday.
His lack of a conscience isn't shown very well, in my opinion. Jiminy Cricket is honestly terrible at his job. I don't know why he got that medal at the end. For the entire movie, Jiminy keeps saying, "Oh well, guess that Pinocchio knows better than I do, whatever, guess I better move on. Since when does he listen to his conscience anyways?" Since never. Since he became sentient yesterday. Which you saw. I know it's supposed to be symbolic, but I kind of lose the symbolism and appreciation for somebody ignoring their conscience when we, the audience, know that the main character is literally about 1 day old. It's a source of frustration for me. Also, side note, why was Jiminy Cricket so awkward and horny around inanimate objects the entire time? My man saw a wooden marionette in a dress showing a lot of leg and went insane. Anyways. His animation style was also a bit of a choice to be sure. He is a cricket only because it's in his name and he can jump pretty high. Otherwise, he's just a strange little green egg man.
The other characters were certainly there. Gepetto loves his son and is a great carpenter. Fantastic bit of background storytelling by the way, I liked how they showed that Gepetto enjoys making little things by how fantastical his workshop is. It's delightful. Honest John is not honest (surprise). The caravan man is the devil I guess? I'm not entirely sure what his deal is, but they did make him look quite demonic when he was talking to Honest John. Also not sure what the caravan man's workers at Pleasure Island are supposed to be. Demons, I suppose. And of course, the Blue Fairy who granted the wish. There's not much about her, but she grants wishes and lives in stars. I think.
Boy, I sure hope Stromboli being a racist stereotype isn't going to be a trend Disney will follow for a while!
Why'd the room go silent?
Anyways, onto the acting! It's Disney. The acting was fantastic. While I might complain about Jiminy Cricket's character, his voice actor did an amazing job for this role! Gepetto was also a stand out, and Pinocchio does a great job as well, especially for his voice actor being a kid. It's not easy finding convincing voice actors now. I can't imagine how difficult that would have been when voice acting was a relatively (at least to my knowledge) new industry.
Speaking of new industries, Pinocchio was a direct switch up from Snow White in background music. Like I said in my Snow White review, that movie seemed closer to an animated music video for an orchestra. While Pinocchio had some elements of that in there, the movie had more emphasis on the storyline than Snow White did. Not an unwelcome change either. That emphasis on the story is quite possibly the only thing that allowed Pinocchio to get away with how disjointed the plot feels. Regardless, the background music doesn't entirely end at all either, but it does get more atmospheric in some places, like when Gepetto is trying to find Pinocchio in the thunderstorm. I wonder if this trend is going to keep up. Granted, next movie I'm watching is Fantasia, which is legitimately just a bunch of classical music videos (I think. I haven't seen it before but it's reputation proceeds it). I guess I'll see when Dumbo rolls around.
Timing wise, the story moves at a nice clip. I don't think there's really a part in the film where I was going, "Dear god, move on to the next scene" or, alternatively, "Dear god, what just happened?" I don't have much to say here other than they did a good job on it!
And now here's the real thing I'm going through all these old movies for: how the animation has changed. It's subtle, but if you watch Snow White and then watch Pinocchio, you'll notice all these new things they're trying out. The camera angle when Honest John and his little cat friend are dragging Pinocchio down to Stromboli's is very unique and cool when compared to what they were doing and what they could do with Snow White. It looks as though the camera is hung from the jutting rafter of a building, and it's following Honest John and Pinocchio (and the little cat friend) down the alleyway in a semi-top-down view. That's absolutely astounding if you remember that in Snow White they didn't have many shots that weren't either face front or side view. The only one I can think of is when the Dwarfs are looking up their staircase, but even still I might be misremembering that scene. Regardless, the angles that they use for Pinocchio are pretty amazing, and how rain and water is animated in general here is incredible. Watching Monstero's rage sequence is looking at a marvel of animation skill. I'm not an animator, so I don't know how difficult it is to animate water. I assume it's pretty difficult though. (Edit: I just asked my animator friend. He says it's incredibly difficult.)
The facial expressions were also a massive step up! My favorite scene has to be when Lampwick is turning into a donkey. It starts off humorous, then turns surprisingly horrifying. I think that scene would have given me nightmares had I been a kid when I watched this. I digress. Pinocchio's face when Lampwick starts getting ears and a tail is just a delight to watch. I don't think I've seen the confusion and disgust of, 'What the hell did I just take?' epitomized so well in a cartoon before. Pinocchio's face alone got a few giggles out of me.
All in all, I liked it! Solid A-tier film. I enjoyed Snow White a little more, but Pinocchio was good too. I don't think I really liked Jiminy Cricket all that much, and that ultimately brought the film down for me. In general though, I enjoyed the darker vibe of Pinocchio!

Why do the bonnie models dislike eachother in your Au? And follow up question, do other animatronics have this sort of established relationship with other models of themselves?
Mentions of mental health, etc below
Bonnie models are heavily, HEAVILY influenced by actual rabbits. Rabbits are strange, fourth dimension little shits one moment and yet loyal and sweet-natured the next. They can hold grudges like a sponge holds water. I used to have a rabbit named Hiccup who would pee on my bed to âmix our scentsâ and would revenge chew on a certain piece of furniture if I corrected him or WORSE: removed my sheets to wash them. Yet he knew that when he groomed me he could not nibble my âfurâ and so he would lick me, he also liked to make my bed every morning, patting it down so it was smoother, whereas most bunnies would make little tunnels and dig as is their instinct--not Hiccup, apparently, because he had watched me make my bed plenty of times. He was sassy, smart, shitty, and very loyal. You can see where the Bonnie model attitude came from in the knight guard au, which helped me grieve Hiccupâs loss when he died in 2018. Letâs move on to your question though:
Unfortunately, because the âfirstâ Bonnie model (Springbonnie/Springtrap) ended up being used as the killerâs suit, all Bonnie models thereafter (esp our purple boi) are very antagonistic because they feel let down and betrayed. Why didnât Springtrap fight harder? Why did those kids have to die? How many lives would have been saved if Scraptrap had gone against his Suit more? Mike and Gold and the Marionette and the Crying Child argue sometimes, so what could be avoided? Itâs sort of a comment on victim blaming and a discussion on why abusive relationships tend to go farther than they should and why others have a hard time understanding a dynamic. It is not healthy, Afton/Springtrap DO NOT have a healthy relationship and I do not condone their actions/Aftonâs treatment of Springtrap.
It is not something Bonnie should do either, but he is hurting from their history and so he takes it out on the two he deems are the worst. He refuses to separate the two because his anger is clouding his better judgement. Bonnie is also programmed to mirror teenage behavior and relate with them, and he has also never lost his Freddy model, and one of the main themes for Last Shift (though itâs been mentioned before) is that âYou canât have a Bonnie without a Freddy!â The resulting combination of a teenagers cognitive response PLUS the reliance on a Freddy model PLUS the young girl that haunted Bonnie for years until Mike came around in Devilâs Spine means that Bonnie the bunny has made incorrect conclusions and has colored his relationship with Springtrap and other Bonnie models by association. (This is also not healthy, obv.)
In his mind, Springtrap is no better than William Afton. We have seen in a few flashbacks and sometimes from Mikeâs words, that Springtrap is NOT very emotive and tends to lock down emotions to get through what he can--years of living with cruel, manipulative Afton has caused this. But the original Bonnie model is not a âvillainâ in the sense that Afton is for you and I. Bonnie does not know what we know and until/if he learns more, he will continue to dislike Springtrap in the way that some siblings hate other siblings when they donât protect them from past parental abuse. This hurt and past wounds are what mostly causes the problems among Bonnie models. Toy Bon was âprogrammed down cognitivelyâ and thus is not as mentally sound as what Bonnie is used to. To Bonnie, Toy Bon is annoying nuisance who wonât leave him alone. (Not unlike a teenager with a MUCH younger sibling.) For Mike, who knows he canât force Bonnie to like Springtrap, and he canât reprogram Toy Bon (Blue), he deems it better to just keep Bonnie models separate if possible. It can be hard to over come your own programming, and he also hasnât had the chance, of course, to sit Bonnie and Springtrap down and make them work through things. Springtrap could not walk between Ghost Strings and Finding Freddy, and it is implied a few times in FF that any attempts to get the two to talk ended....poorly. Bonnie models are portrayed as jealous, or at the very least insecure which causes jealous responses. Nightmare Bonnie and Bonnie somewhat fixed this, during Ghost Strings when they both wanted to have Danny Fitzgeraldâs attention but didnât want to share.
Other model relationships:
Freddy models: Despite Freddy being the most possessive/protective over Mike, and despite his stubbornness on certain things, Freddy is mature enough to separate issues or at the very least, be civil. He has no problem with Fredbear/Golden Freddy--the old bear is, in Freddyâs mind, his only âbossâ and because Gold is essentially Mike, Freddy likes the ghostly fellow just fine. He has very little patience for Toy Fred, (Ted) and sees his love of video games as an immature trait when there are chores to be done first, but he doesnât really care that much. He is not sure about Lefty, but is willing to allow the bear to be on stage if it will make Henry (and Mike) happy. He, as well as his band members, do not know about the Rockstars yet.
Chica models: Chica is liked by everyone, and this seems to make her like her sisters better. Toy Chica (Chi-chi) is very bubbly and despite her fear of the kitchens, (a fire alarm went off one time in the 80â˛s and scared her and Blue very bad, during Jeremyâs tenure.) she is willing to defer to her first model and serve food, so long as she doesnât have to work in the kitchen. Nightmare Chica is the only model of the Chicas that doesnât get along with anyone--but, câmon. Sheâs a Nightmare. She likes Nightmare Bonnie and her Chompy-Cake, and thatâs it.
Foxy models: Another mature and varied line that get along well. Foxy and Mangle are very close, and Foxy is very fond of his âfirst mateâ despite the fact Mike could never find coding that related the two. Foxy is Mangleâs security blanket, and she is the only Toy models aside from BB that the original four accepted into their ring/restaurant with little hesitation. (At some point, she gave Mike the scars he now carries, but she made up for her mistake by protecting Mike during Finding Freddy.) Nightmare Foxy, is has been established to be Alexander Afton, the older brother to the Crying Child/Circus Baby and younger brother to Michael Afton. He gets along well with his model copies, hence why he choose to be another Foxy even after he left the original one his father...stuffed him into.Â
Sorry this got rambly! I love the FNAF series, and I want my knight guard au always be horror. But I also want it to be found family and working through trauma etc, to keep it ârealisticâ as Iâd like. (Haunted animatronics and ghostly bears aside!)

i was like :o at the s concept photos at first, but then i read the interpretations of it as invasions of privacy and like they're kinda disturbing photos but now it makes sense to me why
I havenât read any interpretations yet. But I think one of the reasons why I donât like it as much is because itâs quite âin your faceâ. The concept is similar to the Mic Drop MV. Being in constant scrutiny. They went further by showing they were kinda trapped in this public perception and scrutiny.Â
In the S concept photos they were like fishes in a fish bowl but they used a bubble to show the fragility of it. Everyone is watching them and one wrong move could burst it.
The S group shot shows them as marionettes, play things tied and placed on a mantle. They were used to be viewed and to give joy, but they feel like they are being controlled.
The E concept photos were disturbingly direct, with the eyes and security cameras in every corner. Literal hands trying to reach them.Â
The E groups shots showed them with white noised monitors, dressed in circus-themed garbs. Androgynous, colorful. Reiterating a similar concept as the rest of the photos.Â
Love Yourself is about finding yourself and loving the real you. They have been on this journey at a personal level. Figuring out who they are and learning how to love themselves. Feeling like you canât be who you really are because of what people want to see or make you think you have to be is complicating the whole âloving yourselfâ process for them.
They are literally âIDOLSâ. Worshipped, loved and adored based from a certain expactation.Â
I understand the idea, I like the concept. But the way it was represented was too direct, I think. But thatâs just my opinion. I mean, they look gorgeous. THEY ALWAYS DO! Just that the way the idea was played, I agree, is quite disturbing. I think it was made to be that way too. Iâm just not in love with it aesthetically and that is just a matter of personal taste and opinion.Â

Lycosa Robess - College Student Communist
@chaoticevilfantrolls
Iâve been considering making her a purpleblood, rather than a tealblood. Iâd love some ideas for tying that into her re-design, if possible!
Reading her profile, Iâm definitely interested in making her a purpleblood. So Iâll absolutely address that as we continue! I think linking her back to teal a little bit may be reasonable, though, given the setting.
Planet: Alternia, AU where she plays SBURB and as well as the age of being shipped of planet is 10 sweeps. Also, caste traits can be mixed up thanks to linked traits and genetic weirdness (like with Vapula).
Name:Lycosa Robess - Lycosa: From Lycosa tarantula, the animal originally known as the common tarantula. Ties into her lusus, horns, and just about everything else relating to bugs in her theme.Â
- Robess: From Maximilien Robespierre, one of the most prominent figures of the French Revolution. Connects to her ârevolution for the sake of itâ ideology, as well as her typing quirk (As the two numbers she replaces are also part of the year of the beginning of the French Revolution).
Oh man⌠I used to be a bit of a French Revolution nerd. I adore this connection to her revolution for the sake of it ideology. Robespierre was a really chaotic man who was willing to go to some incredible extremes. Nice link!
Age:Typically between 8-10.
Strife Specibus:chainKind. Her iconic weapon is a Kusarigama with a hammer on one end and a sickle on the other.Â
I See Your Joke And I Love It.Â
Fetch Modus:Â Hive Modus. All items are stored within a hexagonal grid, forming rings around a core item. Only items on the current outermost row can be accessed, and each row needs to be completed before items can be added to the next layer. She picked up this modus when she was still really in her bugs phase, which she kind of regrets now that sheâs going for a cool hip college communist aesthetic.
Just inconvenient enough to be fun. I also like that even though it harkens back to her old bug interest, itâs also a modus based around the structure of a communal species, making it still count for a reasonable communism reference.
Blood color:Â Currently Teal, though Iâm thinking about making her a purpleblood (maybe a defector from the cult? Especially because her rebellious nature is taken to an idealistic extreme- she doesnât have a moral end goal, she just wants things to change.)
I do think that a purpleblood defector is a great thing to do. It ties into her theme of a desire for change and development to have her rebel against a structure like that. And even if we change her, we can still link her back to this tealblood root a little bit. See, a desire to change Can be her moral center. Her view of right and wrong can be âanything goes as long as it is in the name of change.â She can have a judicial nucleus built around the conception that change is the ultimate right.Â
Symbol and meaning:Â It kinda looks like a bug? I donât necessarily want to go with an extended zodiac sign, because her symbol is technically from the same family as Vapulaâs. Maybe a small adjustment to match the teal sign language would be good, if not changing the symbol to something else entirely (if she ends up as a purpleblood).
Oh yeah, Iâll definitely give her a custom sign. It fits teal sign language well enough that I might leave it mostly untouched even when I change her to a purple.
Trolltag: malcontentMarionette - Malcontent: Someone who is displeased with their current situation
- Marionette: I feel this would tie in well to making her a purpleblood? She ends up as a sort of puppet, controlled by the violetblood in her session and becoming the leader of his consort army. Additionally, a marionette would tie into the inherent circus theme of most purplebloods, and her status as a mind player (controlling choices in some form).
Oooh I love this⌠It expresses her original feeling of being malcontented with the state of things and feeling like a puppet of her institution while also acting as foreshadowing for her story⌠And if sheâs a purple, it Does indicate the general clown theme as Well as the chucklevoodoos. And if we do make her a time player (Iâm on the fence there⌠Maybe. Mayhaps), itâs a good reference to that too.
Quirk:Â Actually has two different quirks, although theyâre not used simultaneously.
Originally, she typed in all caps, replacing b with 8 and t with 7, representing insect eyes and mandibles. She would use horizontal emoticons with two sets of eyes (oOwOo) to represent a jumping spiderâs face. She also wouldnât use much ending punctuation, instead sticking to commas to denote pacing.
âMM: 7HE QUICK 8ROWN FOX JUMPED OVER 7HE LAZY DOG oOwOoâ
As time goes on, her quirk becomes much more ârefinedâ, cut back to proper syntax and grammar, with a distinct lack of emoticons. She maintains the symbol replacements out of some deep, in-borne spite, but thatâs about all.
âMM: 7he quick 8rown fox jumped over 7he lazy dog.â
I like it a lot!
Special Abilities:Nothing in particular as a tealblood. As a purpleblood Iâve considered giving her chucklevoodoos that incite feelings of outrage, overconfidence, and anger, which can cause riots and rebellion. Additionally, being able to manifest insects (ala Gamzee creating Lilâ Cal, on a much lower level).
Thatâd be pretty neat, because chucklevoodoos are said to be a way for purples to keep the lowbloods in check/keep them in line. Her abilities having the direct opposite impact could be good⌠Maybe her abilities naturally started as an ability that influenced individuals to cause infighting, inducing rage against companions and manifesting visions of insects to get people to swat at each other and exacerbate fights? But sheâs been actively teaching herself to move away from that ability because she does not want to be a tool of the system or a tool of control. Of course she could then try to utilize it as a power for unifying feelings of anger and giving it motivational direction.Â
Lusus:Â A jumping spider the size of a kitten at most. A sweet, gentle lusus whom Lycosa most definitely doted on when she was younger. Her lusus will knit you sweaters out of web silk.Â
Oh I love⌠If we make her a purple, we could just shift that to a sea spider probably. The silkâs still fine. Make some fishing nets out of that silk, little cute spider.
Personality: Lycosa, as a person, is fundamentally unhappy and ill-at-ease, banking on rebellion and change for the hell of it to fill some sort of thing that she canât seem to place. She doesnât care about the morality of the change sheâs advocating for, as long as it happens, and as long as it soothes whatever emotional turmoil that is bubbling inside of her.Â
She tends to let herself get swept away on flights of emotional fancy, elaborate stories of âwhat ifâ that eventually become âit willâ. Her belief that she can find all of the answers to her disillusionment in the form of others, or in the form of external relationships is one of those things. She ends up clinging far too much to a fellow player in her session, who uses her fancy to manipulate her into becoming his second-in-command, and an essential puppet under his control.Â
She also tends to hold back any signs of her old interests, and any traits she has that others might not like. When the violetblood in her session expresses distaste in her interest in insects, she drops any signs of interest besides the most minimal, retaining only her quirk in some subconscious spite, justifying the lack of change as simply matching his.
A big part of her story line is learning to cope with her general malcontent with life in a way that doesnât involve deep-throating molotovs for revolution, or clinging to the first person who offers her some sense of stability no matter how much theyâre using her for their own gain.Â
The relationship clinging is another of those little teal traits that I really like shining through in her. Picking someone that is bad for her and committing too powerfully to him⌠With the added purpleblooded fun of the dedication.Â
I definitely love her. I love her a lot. Sheâs a very detailed and thorough character with a lot of story growth potential. She has a wonderful character arc here⌠And she has so many aspects that sheâs throwing around that you can develop her in a million directionsâŚÂ
Interests:Â Lycosaâs interests are few and rather simple, often shoved to the side in favor of mimicking whatever interests her current lover or friend happens to possess.Â
She spent most of her youth obsessed with bugs, from their physiology to their behavior. She knows how to manage just about any insect, from wasps to butterflies to mosquitos, and she has a deep fondness in her heart for arachnids as well. She can draw detailed drawings of them from memory (which ends up becoming relevant at a point in her quest),Â
Lycosa also has a deep and involved interest in illegal histories and recovering the names of banished and excised revolutionaries, recovering propaganda, symbols, and techniques they used to further their causes. Not out of any legitimate desire to bring those ideals to fruition, but because theyâre a personal aesthetic and something to devote herself to.Â
Lycosa has a secondary interest in improvised weaponry and field first aid, which she learned as part of her research into revolutionary tactics.Â
God these are good interests⌠Youâre great at picking a theme and sticking to it STRONGLY. Just to tie into that last bit, you should include interest in guerrilla warfare tactics, laying traps, Disarming traps⌠Just a little additional information that she could brag about having for theoretical revolutionary purposes.
Title: Her session already has a Void, Doom, Life, and Light player, so unfortunately those are off the table. Iâve been leaning towards Rogue or Thief of Mind or Heart, though.Â
Rogue of Mind might work for her over-abundance of options, which she has difficulty coping with. Thief of Heart would better show how she takes parts of herself from others, mirroring them more than showing much of herself in a relationship.
Okay⌠Iâm definitely struggling to make a decision here. Right now Iâm between Mind, Heart, Rage, and TIME.Â
Rogue of Mind works for sure. She needs to learn redistribute and allocate all of those choices, needs to learn to balance them out and move them around. To find the right decision among all the crap. And also to take back her own mind, her own free will, her own actions. Sheâd be able to redistribute logical thought and action. Her inverse is Knight of Heart, which would mean she could actively utilize the strength of her personal will, her emotionsâŚÂ
If she were a heart player, Iâd argue sheâs a Page of Heart. Sheâs someone who has a weak identity. She cares so much about her aesthetic and what others think of her and moving herself to their whim instead of being capable of defining her own identity and having her own self confidence. This would leave her in a really malleable and endangered position. She would have to break out of this mold and reach her potential and figure out her identity and confidence in order to start utilizing her power, her soul, to its full capacity. With the inverse Thief of Mind, sheâd also be able to steal back the right to action for herself, steal the options and activities while utilizing the strength of her willâŚÂ
Rage references strongly her malcontent and her firm desire for a little chaos, a little mess, a lack of care for whether something is right or wrong and just a strict need for MOVEMENT. If I were to recommend this Iâd probably say Prince of Rage? Someone who is actively destroyed by all this pessimism and this need for everything to be torn down, but who is then able to learn to use this to destroy the systems around herâŚÂ
And time of course discusses her struggle, her want for social development. But it would also challenge her to engage in active struggle instead of passively accepting things as they come and taking a backseat goal. It would make her need to find a goal to focus on and strive towards it instead of vaguely aesthetically aligning herself with real struggles. Iâd probably recommend Page of Time here for the reasons I detailed in the heart segmentâŚÂ
God but itâs really hard to pick. She has so many possible routes⌠I think Iâd personally recommend Page of Heart, but itâs really up to you to decide.
Land:Â Land of Streetlights and Discord
I almost joked about changing it to Land of Lit Streets and Discord so the acronym would be LOLSAD. But that feels a little rude. I might actually recommend something that implies control/a search of identity more? Maybe Land of Streetlights and Nevron. Nevron is the greek word for string and harkens back to the word for puppet, nevrĂłspastos. It literally means âmuscleâ as well as sinew/tendon/string, which is a nice reference to the heart if you go with the heart title.
Dream Planet:Â Derse
Very suiting, especially considering her tendency to hide her interests because of what others think.
Now design fun!:
Hair: Because I moved her to a purple I decided to make her hair a little bit wackier. Not too much, but just a couple more flips and bits.Â
Horns: I gave her some longer horns. I didnât really see a reason for her to have two sets since she doesnât have much link back to goldbloods? So I created a sprite with just one set and a sprite with two sets for your selection convenience.Â
Glasses: I just edited them a bit darker because they looked awkward at that middling shade.Â
Eyes: I changed them to purple, obviously. On the right side I also gave her a little facepaint? I knew sheâs defected from the cult but it still does at some rebellious visual interest. And it hints casually back to her old insect interest. I additionally added some bags under her eyes because she is exhausted.Â
Shirt: I changed her jacket to a lighter shade to provide contrast because of some of my other changes. I also lightened her outline on her shirt.Â
Symbol: I decided to mostly keep it the same. I deleted like a single pixel between the two connecting lines to make a set of four open arc. It matches the teal sign language more than the purple, but I think itâs still at least tangentially similar enough to purple visually to be acceptable.Â
Pants: I know that fashion is considered an object of consumerism and a lot of communist rhetoric frowns upon it, so I kept the rest of her outfit really simple. But I wanted to use some level of patterns on her clothes, since sheâs a purple. So I used the Iconic Communist Yellow Star.
Shoes: Just edited to purple and given some laces.
I love her! Thanks for sharing.

New Orleans: Stranger & more familiar.
There is a Kurt Vonnegut quote that Asa referenced the other day that has been ringing in my ears ever since. It goes something like âStrange travel plans are like dancing lessons from the universe.â Being both a lover of dancing (above most things) & a true believers in *signs*, it has been on my mind. There are so many levels to it-the trust for your dancing partners, learning to let go, making the most out of everything, forgiving yourself for the fumbles, etc. Mostly, trusting your gut.
I few days ago, I found a little bit of loneliness seeping in. Not an overwhelming amount, but as someone who really loves heart-full chats, I realized it had been some time since Iâve really talked to someone with my heart. I noted that, and kinda kept it in my brain, filling âmaybe try to make friendsâ on my to-do list. I really like my alone time. I also really like my social time. Itâs funny, that recently I kind of waver back and forth between the extremes- spending so much alone time that I start to feel lonely, and then spending way too much time around people that I find myself getting ever-so grumpy (which isnât usually part of my demeanour). It is about balance, and I think this trip has been an excersize it that so far.Â
The past few days, Iâve made an effort to slow my pace a little more. I spent one day in City Park. Which is a very big park on the âlakesideâ of the city. Itâs one of two big parks in the city (the other being Audubon park one the far west side of the city; which I went to the following day). City park is the home of the Museum of Art, the sculpture garden, golf course, a theme park called Storyland & a really beautiful botanical garden. Audubon park hosts a golf course, the city zoo & the most lively, filled duck pond Iâve ever witnessed. The parks were nice for sure, but the trees themselves were amazing- in particular the ones in City Park. Many of them are well over 500 years old, & my favourite one of all was estimated to be around 860 years old. I sat in the roots of that tree really trying to sink in and ground. I held on the obsidian stone Mare gave me before I left & did our grounding ritual- hugging the tree and following its roots all the way down into the earth, then to the core of the earth itself, then back again. It worked in part, but I did kind of wish I had another witch to sit in the ritual with. It did feel so, so, nice to sit at the base of that tree though. It felt like a great-grandfather Iâd never met before. I felt itâs basey-vibration and felt so oddly comforted. It was like all the high-frequency, anxious energy just got absorbed & ceased to exist under the (very very wide) canopy of that tree. I sat there a long time. Even as the tour groups passed & they all kind started at me half-hugging the tree. It felt dis-loyal to leave just because of on-lookers, and so, I stayed.Â
There were a few other huge oaks throughout the park as well. The other notable one is known as the singing oak, which happens to be my friend Troyâs favourite tree (itâs the first thing he told me I should do when I got here). It houses wind-chimes of all different sizes- really huge base ones, to teeny-tiny fairy-like ones. Apparently they are tuned to fill out the scale of African music. Which I thought was cool.Â
The museum was also pretty interesting (Although the Ogden was still my favourite). It contains a lot of the typically expected pieces- oils from dutch masters, a mogdalini, a picasso, a warhol, etc. My favourite exhibit was actually the one being displayed in the front hall. It was Tina Girourardâs work (in collaboration with Haitian artisans) called Bondeye: Between & beyond. It was a collection of Voodoo flags based one what to appeared to be a slightly different archana of Tarot cards. It was stunning. bright, detailed, full of thought, history. Very provoking, memorable-- and very New Orleans.Â
As I waited for the streetcar (which was very late) I spotted some familiar faces in the crowd. A couple I have actually sat behind in the ride up to the park, and then again at several points in the museum. When the streetcar finally did arrive, I again, happened to have sat right behind them. The woman in the pair spun around & told me she had seen me earlier & we got to talking. Olga is from New York via Arizona via Azerbaijan, but now in LA- Not Louisiana (as sheâs had to correct people), but Los Angeles. Sam is born & raised in Los Angeles, but a francophile & lover of travelling too. We chatted a bit- they thought I was a local (lol) and were asking me for recommendations, which I gave them. We talked for a long while about travel & they told me to text them when Iâm LA. Which is cool. Olga also gave me a bunch of recommendations for Arizona, which was really nice, because, in terms of travelling, thatâs the area that makes me a little more nervous- just because I donât have a car.Â
I actually ended up running into them the very next day at a little cafe in the French Quarter called Cafe Beignet. We again, swapped things-to-do lists. I was just coming from Audubon park & they were just going, so we parted way... But in a small place like this, Iâm sure weâll cross over again soon. I stuck around the quarter, because it was the weekend & all the busking musicians were out. Holy Moly. They are great here. I wish I could have spent hours listening to each one. Or more so, I was really wishing for a swing dance partner (but to be fair, even in Halifax I canât always find one). There are also other types of booth/tables set up. Especially along Royale. Tarot card readers, artists-- my favourite of all time was a lady that was live-painting.... using a marionette.Â
P.s! I found my all-time favourite place for noms. The Cafe Verti, which is also on Royal (if I remember correctly). I mean, as a vegitarian, I expected to miss out on many of the New Orleanian classics-- but this cafe does a veggie version of the PoBoy called âthe green giant.â It was also recommended that next time, I get the green giant with olive tempanade as well. Iâm already planning on going back there in the next few days. It is a very hole-in-the-wall type of place--- so honestly, you probably wouldnât find it unless you were specifically looking for it. Itâs sooo worth it though.Â
Later on, Asa & I ended up taking Kozmeaux for a stroll to Cafe Flora. Which, for those familiar with the old establishments of the northend of Halifax, is very much like The Good Food Emporium. Everyone knows everyone, or every will know everyone eventually. Of course, it has itâs NOLA twist to it- you sit under palm trees, etc. Across the street is Big Daddyâs which is apparently the after-hours hang out spot in the Marigny. We sat around talking about weird paranormal stuff & life yadda yadda. One of the humans that works there is named Sal Geloso. Apparently he was voted New Orleans best street musician by Rolling Stone magazine. Iâve never seen him play, but I tell ya he dresses like a rock star for sure. We met one of the regulars Jeremy. Who is a super brilliant mathematician & physicist. Who used to be a hypnotist. Who now does massage one the side. (!!!! um hello signs from the universe).Â
Actually Asa did talk to me about the zebra races from the day before (Which I missed because my stoopooood American SIM isnât working properly- so I missed his text). Apparently it only happens like once a year! And I only missed it by happenstance! What are the chances of that! He also told me about a fight that almost/kind broke out in front of the house the night before between drunken people outside the Hangover Club. He felt the argument really coming to a peek, so he grabbed his Ocarina & hid, softly playing. There was something about the strange melody that broke the spell of inebriated anger... and it broke up like pretty much right away. And now I know, I should always carry an Ocarina on me. Just as a side note too- Asa & Leonâs circus is called the Magic Bean Circus. They are trying to put together a ten-year anniversary of this tour they did, with a festival they are going to call BeanStock. Which sounds veryyyyy much like a cousin of white rabbit. They arenât entirely sure where itâs gonna be yet, it seems- either upstate New York, or New Orleans. They are gonna get Odetta Hartman, Leonâs sister to kinda headline it seems. I looked her up & sheâs great. If it gets proper legs, Iâd definitely go if I could make it happen.Â
----------------------------------------------------------------
Last night, I stayed out late... which honestly was a challenge because Iâm still runnning on what I call âfarm timeâ which means waking up at 6:30 and going to bed around 8. Honestly, itâs allowed me to utilize my days really well. It was worth changing for this show last night tho. It was a Gasa Gasa which is a punk venue in Uptown. The line up was Nick Shoulders & they okay crawdads, Baby Tony & the Teenies, and Max & the Martians. Nick Shoulderâs band is old-country, on the susp of punk- mostly in aesthetics, but definitely comes through in the music to a lesser extent too. They did a Hank Williams-esque version of Blondeâs Heart of Glass which I was a fan of. Honestly, this band in particular was right up my alley. Female drum player. Folk-punk vibes. They had solid chemistry as a group. More importantly though. Nickâs yodelling made my heart melt. (lol) ---I mean. I loveeeeee old country & bluegrass. Itâs kinda why I came down to the south in the first place. As soon as they started- I felt a wave of âoh yeah, this is why I came hereâ.
Baby Tony & the Teenies is a super unique duo. If I were to try to describe them, it would probably be something like âfreak-doowopâ or âAlien Rock nâ Roll.â B-52s would be the closest relative Iâd say. It was super fun. And there were a few people that got up to dance (which---- TANGENT TIME---- people are sooooo dang good at dancing down here. I mean. I shouldnât be surprised. This is where the two-step is alive and well. Apparently in Lousiana, they have the cajun-two step, which is a double-step one direction, double-step the other. I was so jealous though, but too shy to ask a stranger at the time. Next time, I refuse to be shy).
When I walked in I was literally the only one there. Actually. Well, besides those performing. I felt so much pressure to be engaged with the music (which honestly, wasnât hard). Itâs been so long since Iâve been uncomfortable like that. I mean, in Halifax, I go to things by myself all the time... but it never really feels that isolating. I either know the performers, or run into someone, or at the very least the venue is familiar to me. This was all freaky-fresh & so I just tried to casually lean... without unintentionally sinking in the wall beside me. After a while, more people showed up-- but they were obviously friends of the band.Â
A cool card is something I donât really like trying to carry around in my pocket. So I kinda vowed to myself that I wouldnât leave without talking to someones--- I mean I honestly did come all the way across town (well, canada originally) to see them play. So I went up to Eli from Baby Tony, to introduce myself. Sometimes I forget I can be an interesting person. I always kinda underestimate myself in being able to bring an interesting story into an interaction (I donât know why, honestly, my life is super strange & wonderful). Anyways, we very quickly found common ground, exchanged Instagrams & agreed out art styles would definitely get along. Their band is finishing up a mini-tour, just coming up from Florida, then back home to Athens, Georgia. They mentioned that if I was ever in Georgia, I should message them via âthe world wide web.â I said the same about Canada. It would be super cool to see them play in Halifax, but I especially think theyâd go over well in Montreal.Â
The show ended & I stopped by the okay crawdads to say I really enjoyed their set-- because I really did. I told Nick I was jealous of his dancing & he said he was about to ask me to dance but was feeling shy. But he then did invite me to the St. Roch tavern tonight for more country music. Asa & I are going to Preservation Hall, but I think we will go afterwards. Nick also told me to go to Country Tuesday-- which is the thing Milly is playing, so as it happens I was planning on going anyways. New Orleans is definitely a small, interwoven place like Halifax. Itâs certainly nice to slowly be integrating in that way. In some part, I wish I was staying longer too, but I guess thatâs part of the excersize itself. Not going to lie though, Iâm having very vivid daydreams about coming back here for longer. Maybe for Mardi Gras. And maybe bringing a few friends. There are definitely some people in my life that NEED to meet this city-- Iâm definitely thinking of Steph Rybczyn here, but there are many others too. Â

The Ten of Cups.
My friend Kirsti is organizing a collaborative project between a whole bunch of artists in the northend to make a Tarot Deck. We each get assigned a card that was randomly selected. Mine is the Ten of Cups. Which is the card representing Divine love, Blissful relationships, Alignment & Harmony. More simply; joy, peace & family. Feels pretty good having that card, but I donât know what Iâm going to do it yet. My Illustrations tend to be a little darker than that usually. I am kinda looking at it as a guiding card on my whole trip tho.
Itâs also nice I can start thinking about it now. Iâve definitely had my mini-sketchbook in my pocket, while I stop in the little gallery & shops, making little sketches of elements I find inspiring. Iâm sure many of the sketches will make some sort of more concrete appearance in my card.Â

Assignment 1 â Interactive Disney Cube (03/09/2017)
As I am finally starting with our Creative Thinking Skills classes, our first project was assigned to us which was the Disney Interactive Cube at around Week 4, although the lecturers had told us about it way beforehand, we only started getting the briefing during that time of the month. Like what the cube is called, we had to make something out with the theme of Disney cartoons and I was in glee and full of excitement as I am a cartoon geek, I technically grow up watching Disney.
Mr Choy, our tutor, assigned us to be in groups of 5 to 6 people and I am blessed to join a group of teammates that are hardworking and accepted me whole heartedly although I joined in late (got change to another tutorial class thatâs why). During tutorial classes, we got a quick briefing from Mr Choy in how we can create our cubes and also our IDJ. IDJ stands for Idea Journal and it is where we jot down our ideas, inspiration and anything related to the project, you will hear a lot of this throughout the blog. After briefing, Mr Choy picked a designated Disney movie to each group, I was not worried that much since, like I said, I love anything Disney, but still got a bit nervous upon what movie will we get. Some groups got really interesting movies like Frozen and Monster Inc, finger crossing we will get something similar, we ended up with Pinocchio, yes that Pinocchio that came out during the 1940s, well before all of us were born. I did not want to think that it is an impossible movie to interpret into a cube, and it really help cause I got an idea really fast on how I wanted the cube to look like.
After the classes, my teammates and I immediately started doing meet ups to discuss about how we want the cube to look like. Natasha was our group leader and I can say she did a great job in making sure all of our ideas are being used in the project and not just merely focusing on someoneâs idea. This is something crucial as it is a team oriented project, teamwork is really important and I am glad she took all our idea in account. We finalized on how we wanted the cube to be, we wanted it to be a more story narration with interactive element for children to play around. It was a rough start since we were all clueless of how the cube will really look like as we bombarded a lot of different ideas on it, never thinking how limited we are actually if we were to create that certain element in the box. But making sure our ideas do not go to a waste, we have them written down to refer it back. I was beyond happy to do most of the sketches so we can see our model more vividly through the drawings. Without wasting a single second, we collected all sorts of materials we can use for the project, although I felt bad for not providing that much material because I just moved in to the university dorm and got insufficient material with me.
Since we have prepared our materials, every moment started becoming more precious to us as the time we were left to make the cube out with was getting lesser and lesser. To make sure we get to have our cube submitted on time, we gathered up almost every day after our classes to start building it up from scratch. Trust me, it was NOT easy, Natasha and Esther had to spend around 4 hours to just make the base shape of the cube (shout out to both of them!) because we wanted it to be a âexploding boxâ cube, which was inspired by the exploding box card where the flaps of the box will fall down to reveal a flat surface. I was in charge on most of the drawings and brainstorming I assume since I contributed some ideas that made it into the cube (YAY). Our main idea for how the box will work was that the lid will be removed so the flaps on the box will fall flat, appearing in the middle is another smaller box so we can paste the scenes on it. But what is more surprising for this part is, we will take away the middle box at the end of the presentation as the inside is the ending of the Pinocchio story, that Pinocchio turned into a real boy! We first started with the 4 main scenes, which is the puppet making scene, circus scene, pleasure island scene and last but not least the climax, the whale scene. Looking at the idea that was not as interesting, we came up with an idea of adding another scene in it, which was cooperating the circus scene with the prison scene, where Pinocchio were trapped in a bird cage. We wanted the circus scene to drop down and show out the prison scene at the back. We painted the box with base colours and have our pieces of printed background pasted on it. When everything was glued together, it was so satisfying because it felt like we are getting somewhere.
The scenes were done so we went on with making small elements. Since we wanted a story telling base interactive cube, we made small little elements to write story lines on it. And to make things interesting, we made the characters out into puppets as an interpretation of what Pinocchio is -a puppet! Well, more precisely, a marionette but we were short of time to figure out how we can manage to make a real marionette out, thus leading us to make the puppet cut outs. We also thought of explaining how the whole box is Pinocchioâs head and the inside is all his thoughts, and the characters are all puppets since he thought of so! (Shout out to Jolene for the fantastic idea!) Having to prepare al the small details was one of the toughest as we need to make sure that everything fits nicely in place as we need to close the box. Not only so, we have to make sure every elements are not boring, and from there we have to start up with more creative way to make the interactive parts more doable. Since we wanted to rush everything before the dateline, we have to stay over on Saturday to finish up most of the thing. We managed to finish up about 80% of the cube, having to make the miniature pool table, sticking on the miniature Pinocchio, pasted on the whale to the box, making sure all the mechanics work and just almost everything. It was a hectic day because we spent about 6 to 7 hours straight that day to complete most of the task. Glad that everyone took the effort to come to campus although they are busy that day.
We continued our project after classes and there was only a few days left before the due date. Lucky enough, we only have a few things to do before we completely end our interactive cube. We also manage to get our hands with some leftover Perspex to make a âdisplay boxâ for our miniature Pinocchio. Since we are done with the inside of the box, we finally got to focus on the outside of it more. Having to already paint the head of Pinocchio, we were only left with his eyes and his hat, which will be a decoration for the lid. We have our ping pong ball cut into two to be the eyes of Pinocchio, and as for the hat, we rolled yellow cards together to form into a cone. We also painted a white colour feather that we have on hand into red to fit as the feather on his hat. As everything was assembled together, we finally got the chance to try it out. We were really happy at how the outcome turned out since we poured our hard work in, although we were also worried at the same time whether can we meet our lecturers and tutors expectation. But still, we were relieved as we did the cube on time.
In between the making of the cube, I also managed to do a few parts of my IDJ. At the end of the cube making, we all discussed on how we wanted to interpret the box for the last part of our IDJ. From there, everyone was busy working on their IDJ to make sure we can submit the PDF version on time. I had already printed out and pasted most of the pictures on the IDJ so I was only left with the writings and drawings. As I finally completed the IDJ, my first assignment finally came to an end, and there is left is the presentation. I had a lot of fun from this project, especially getting to meet all the nice teammates I have and letting me be a part of it. I am not the type that likes group works as I am always being neglected but I would love to work with them again if I had the chance to!
Signed, MJ
