what i really like about Shuichi and Kaede, and what elevates them for me past a lot of guy-girl protagonist duos, is that their relationship is very much Open to Interpretation. you can pin them down as in love, sure, that's totally valid. but i think i speak for all of us traumatized people when i say that the first person to be Truly Niceys to you leaves a huge mark on you, regardless of sexuality or gender. so a close and special friendship is also extremely Valid and Viable too

He's not sure what he means by "not doing anything stupid", but he will definitely not touch him. Not that Shuichi would have, anyway, but something tells him that he'd better not provoke this guy.... Which should probably be all the more reason to just leave him be, but... well he's already said he could stay, and he highly doubts he'll want to chat with Shuichi, so... Long as he keeps his distance and leaves him be, it should be fine....

"N-No, it's fine. You was here first, so I'm the one intruding on you... but I promise to not be a bother. I just...." He trails off in surprise when seeing the big hug his knees and hide his face. "Wh... Wh-Why do you say that? Is everything alright...?" ("Is it... because of me...?")

Such a strange guy, this one is... He wondered who he was, exactly... The mask and fancy suit honestly reminded him of phantom thief characters from the mystery novels he reads. But no, that couldn't be: a detective, encountering a thief on the balcony of a party setting... literally a scene right out of a mystery novel! But he has to be wearing that mask for a reason... Though he's not sure if he should ask. Something tells him it would be a really bad idea if he did...

Nobutoshi liked parties, they were always fun when his brain choose to cooperate with him. This didnt parties weren't enjoyable when his Kleptomania struck though; looking at every clothing and accessory, planning a way to steal it in his head, counting the yen and dollar he could get and making escape routes around the room was fun! Tiring, but fun!

Not tonight, though.

Trying to have a small talk with people while one half of your brain is screaming at you to "take this and take that and that and this" is hard. Unfortunately, shutting himself around the buffet only provided very little protection, especially since his brain also started to count the amount of cash he can take out of the snacks, the glasses, the little decorations, the foodware and th-

This was the idea behind his move to the balcony, to take a fresh breath and gather whatever IQ left in his skull before returning. The least thing he needed was to have a mental breakdown in front of everyone. Therefore, he choose to slip to the empty balcony, thanking quietly when he could find no stupid decoration that'll keep driving him insane. He took his fedora between his hands and leaned his head on the cold railing, flipping his beloved hat between his hand as he focused on the cold air of the night.

Unfortunately, universe hated his guts more than he hated anything.

He corrected his posture when he realized someone entered in, slipping his hat back over his head and turning around to press his back on the railing. Nobutoshi fixed his blazer and mask while squinting at the new student. He wasn't an idiot, he knew that this academy had two detectives and right now, he was looking at one of them in the eye.

He grunted quietly and rolled his eyes when Shuichi bowed at him. Ugh, such a fake behavior! Why don't he just rip the band aid off and get on with this already? "İt's fine, you can stay," Nobutoshi replied with a wave of his hand. "As long as you don't touch me or do something stupid, than i don't care. But yeah, I'm not planning to leave this balcony anytime soon. Tough luck if you want to shoo me away or whatever."

Nobutoshi bit back an exhausted sigh, before sliding down to the ground and hugged his knees. "But I'll be honest. It was a mistake for me to come here at the first place. I don't know what i was expecting." He grumbled before burying his face on his knees. He didn't want to look at Shuichi for too long. He didn't want to know what he can cash out of the beloved detective's body. İn another day, he would not mind nor give a fuck who saw him nor who could be his victim. He trusted in his physical strength and determination. Not tonight, though, where the entire academy stood few feet away from the Favorite Boy of the teachers. He knew that'd end terribly for him more than it'd end for Shuichi.

Let's just hope that he would not stab his stomach with his broken leg bones and bleed out to death when he attempts to leap out of the balcony.

HOT YYH TAKE: Kurama would be awkward AF in a romance!

i often see Kurama/Shuichi Minamino characterized as very smooth, calm and collected...and he IS in most situations!

but after his human rebirth, i headcanon he mostly swears off romantic or sexual attachments...he doesn't want a repeat of the Maya fiasco and he doesn't want an SO to leak details about his past to his mother, so it's just simpler to remain unattached

and that means he is either 1) very out of practice when it comes to romance, or 2) inexperienced in the human version of romance

...or both! both is good!

once Kurama finds himself interested in someone romantically, it'll take him a minute (or twelveo) to reorient himself and figure out how all this romantic crap works...he may not even realize he's interested in them romantically or be able to recognize his own desires right away, and thus i think he'd be AWKARD AF until he really sits down to self-reflect and it'd be a huge shock to realize he's actually interested in someone(!?!?!???) after all this time

it would take him a hot minute to carefully (carefully OH SO CAREFULLY) figure out what to do, decide if he should pursue them or just ignore his feelings, and determine how to handle his emotions...he wouldn't want to fuck it up you see...and if his potential lover is a human, it'll take even more strategizing and reflecting to figure out how the heck a romance with a human would actually work in practice

he's smart and he'd get the hang of it quickly, but in the early stages i'm pretty convinced he'd come off as the strangest fucking dude on the goddamn planet...he won't become a stammering mess or anything like that (he's too cool-headed overall), but his behavior and body language would be hot-and-cold and just plain WEIRD for a bit until he figures his shit out...you may even think he hates you a little before the truth comes out!

i love the "Kurama is a perfect, smooth-talking gentleman at all times" characterization we usually fall back on as a fandom, but i think some endearing awkwardness when it comes to love and romance really suit this guy <3

the death road of despair segment is the pre-trial highlight of ch1. so damn good. just a perfect microcosm of the game and kaede's flaws and conflicts

maki is funnier than i remember. but she’s at her funniest when she hits shuichi with a devastating insult, usually completely unprompted

ouma and maki parallels and foiling forever and ever. they HAAATE each other. but also it’d be cool to see them get along. the whole point is that they don’t see through the other and believe the other’s lies but still

maki saying she’ll work hard to make people trust her and her talent and that she wants to survive with everyone…ough…

ouma is so mad. he wishes that were him. also that moment where everyone ignores him and tries to comfort kaito after gonta's execution. he also wishes that were him but unfortunately he's been an asshole to everyone and no one likes him so

the only way i can enjoy saio/uma is one sided ouma->shuichi where shuichi is just not invested in the cop/robber dynamic ouma wants at all. it’s funnier this way + saimota inspires a visceral upset within him. he NEEDS to fumble both kaede and shuichi.

on that note i’ve been hcing ouma as bisexual for years partially out of spite

kaito’s obnoxious charm can’t be ignored. if you think you’ve successfully done it, it means it’s just entered an asymptomatic form. it'll hit you soon enough

tsumugi and the background of v3 are SO GOOD. ABSOLUTE PEAK. in execution there are lots of weak points but after thh, sdr2, udg, and the anime series, tell me a meta story about consumption, lies, and depression that ends with the cameos from entire main games’ previous casts doesn’t go hard

don’t deny that tsumugi loved her little ocs. do you not enjoy torturing your blorbos, putting them into situations, and giving them nice things just to take those away?? shipping them and dressing them up??? making silly aus (salmon mode, utdp, arguably dr:s)?

i just wish the writers utilized her more bc i love that so much. she should've wanted to get to get more involved with everyone (giddily see her ocs up close). she should've made even more thh/srdr2 references. players assume the writers are making for cheap nostalgia points, and they are, but it's true in-universe too...she should've been so overconfident that she'd get sloppy with the situational irony... tsumugi you little freak ily

maki is down for a training trio polycule, shuichi is in denial about everything and fears becoming an awkward third wheel, and kaito has been trying unsuccessfully to wink-wink nudge-nudge shuichi and maki into “realizing their feelings for each other” for ages

i still think maki should have short hair. initially I thought just shorter pigtails would be ok but I’m now in the firm camp of a pixie cut with one of her scrunchies on her wrist, with her orphanage-age flashback self maintaining the pigtails. she had to cut them off for practicality’s sake but one of her hidden desires is to be able to regrow it one day. another show of her loss of identity and past life, and how every aspect of her is controlled? such a simple desire at first glance but because hair is such a simple show of autonomy…even more tragic… maybe her doomed childhood friend yuri used to do her hair …hrm…

ultimates are public, influential figures. maki’s had to assassinate friends before (rip her yakuza friend that I didn’t know she had up until recently). maki went back to being an assassin in utdp after graduating. the hope’s peak class roster MIGHT just be a hit list

for someone who includes miu in her top 3 I haven’t talked about her at all huh. it’s been maki central up in here

miu is AWFUL but when her jokes hit, they hit good and hard just like she’d want them to. she’s completely insufferable and deserves to hit ouma (also insufferable) with 3000 hammers. kiibo too but he wouldn’t want to

look just because ouma said he was doing everything for a good reason, do NOT forget that at his core he is a little dipshit. he’s a JERK!!!

v3 is FARRRR from a masterpiece, but it's a solid and fitting Ending to the main games, plus it's got an insane cast with infinite dynamics and a premise which i love to bits <33 and it was the game that got me into dr, so it'll always be special in my heart. also kaito momota luminary of the stars debuted in it which gives it 5/5 stars

Komahina; really fun but also kinda overshadows other fun ships, along with the issue of characterization being a bit flanderized, but very fun in basically all forms 8/10

Oumasai; interesting fact the reason i call it oumasai instead of saiouma is because 1. Kokichi tops and I refuse to budge on this. and 2. to help keep it out of the much more popular tag when I'm complaining. Anyways 90% of it's terrible but that 10% can be pretty damn good though, please become less popular, constant bad characterization 3/10

Ishimondo; classic, maybe too much of a classic, way too hard to find other ships with these two, however ishimaru did in fact get mondo on his knees in that sauna so i can't exactly say they are wrong, alas i got into danganronpa at like 13-14 and i was too young to really appreciate this ship and has kinda made it not something i ever really reach for 7/10

Naegiri; also a classic, I love them, they are so cute, they love each other so much and the memes are great, genuinely amazing, plenty of room for fluff angst and crack. Adorable but also not something I tend to overly reach for over other ships however am more likely to casually see it and go "HELL YEAH" and read a 40k fic, 8/10

Kaimaki; long time fans know I am not the biggest Maki fan, she's grown on me over the year, but the more canon a ship gets the harder it is for it to keep my interest without some other detail, and Kaimaki, does not have that other detail, I don't mind reading it if it catches my fancy, though I think I prefer it unrequited on Kaito's end, is 'aight 6/10

Saimatsu; similar problem as kaimaki of thhe more canon the ship the harder to keep my attention HOWEVER saimatsu is also a fucking comedy because they both kinda bring out the unhinged in the other and also the angst does make me really sad, so its good even if its not what im reaching for. 8/10

Naegami; 14 year old me was fucking obsessed with this ship, I have since calmed down. Thank god. Honestly overexposure made it a bit stale to me I think, like it's FUN don't get me wrong, I love Togami being a fucking freak about this little peasant little guy, but it's a bit generic "soft with mean" shipping I feel, very much "baby's first rivalry ship" for me 6/10

Oumota; oh that's the good shit, that's the good shit, the angst, the drama, the competitiveness, the assisted suicide, the secrets taken to the grave, the totally for real kiss in the hangar, the, pun intended, amalgamation of them in the final trial. The fact their love hotels line up, the fact they balance each other out. The hilarity of Maki and Shuichi's faces if they found out these two are dating, Ohhh my god, ooooh my god 10/10

Fuyupeko; another classic that falls under "the more canon it is, the harder it is for me to get into it" also Peko just...isn't super interesting to me, like don't get me wrong she's still great, but she's definitely a character I don't think of as often. I love the art for it though, fanartist go HARD and i love it, it's just overall missing that friction or interesting twist I want with my ships, tends to lean too domestic. 6/10

Kamukoma; pretty fun! I kinda grew a bit out of this one as well but sometimes you want komaeda being the absolute fucking dramatic worst with his cringe loser emotionless emo boyfriend, and that's a lot of fun. Good for angst, especially more cracky angst at times. Very funny when Hajime after the fact is like "HEY W HAT" 7/10

shy though, shuichi is like those boyfriends who do their best to treat their partner the way they deserve but are somewhat clumsy too

like he would pull a chair for you, open and close the car doors, but if you’re both about to enter a mall for example, shuichi would push a pull door and pull one that says push.. its out of his nervousness though please comfort this guy he needs it

helps you with your homework if you ask, even if you meant it as a joke shuichi would take it seriously and go over to where you are, begin reading + explain the best he can

the type to not give you the answers directly...he wants you to try and do it yourself but will give you hints/examples of his for you to have an idea of knowing what to do

insecure, has a lot to do with his trauma. shuichi feels inferior you could say, feels as if he isn’t enough and weak, doesn’t voice it out loud though, worries you might think less of him if he talks about it

gets embarrassed easily when it comes to physical contact, even a slight brushing of your hands already has this boy blushing and heart pounding against his chest

the longer you two date, shuichi will get more comfortable. in terms of holding hands, cuddling, kissing too; in the start there will just be small pecks here and there at times, has a habit of hiding his face under his hat after a kiss

when shuichi is anxious, holding hands or just placing your hand above his calms him down a lot, if you give him a kiss it will make him snap out of it, especially if you do it out of nowhere

dating shuichi means being around kaito and kaede constantly, but not to a point where it’s suffocating and you both never have a moment alone, the two are aware of it so it’s more like some hangouts on most days while others are just you and shuichi chilling together

probably researches about stuff like ‘how to be a good boyfriend’ and asks his friends about it—mostly to kaito—who tells him things such as, “you gotta be more manly!” or “if you want to have a lasting relationship you need to work on those muscles, i’ll be your leader”

gives you gifts, could be a bouquet of your favorite flowers to a book/game you wanted or a snack you like, shuichi doesn’t want you to think he’s bad at expressing his love for you so he spends time reading about relationships if he has free time and you aren’t near him

kinda dry with his texts...but not in a bad way, shuichi is still learning after all so he will still be clueless at times
