“things were so hard with dad in recent years...how did he go from paparapluie to père? i wish i could face him and understand, but while he was still here i didn't dare try to tell him [any of my feelings] and now...it's too late.” * paparapluie is a pun on the words papa and parapluie (umbrella) since the plush is a frog. père is the french word for 'father.'
#ml spoilers#ml s6 spoilers#miraculous spoilers#ml el toro de piedra#mledit#miraculous#miraculous ladybug#miraculous lb#miraculousedit#adrien agreste#adrienette#adrinette#my edits#fascinated at umbrellas constantly being a motif for protection in this show. the theme is “in the rain” because marinette fell for adrien#in the rain but he offered her an umbrella (an act of kindness and protection from the weather). next to how#adrien's father used a pun about umbrellas as his own nickname when adrien was younger and he was still caring for him as a dad should#but as he got older his father stopped protecting him so the nickname (and also any form of 'papa') fell through in favor of the#cold + formal + distant 'père.' this specific pun between parapluie and papa might also come from the french poem un papa by pierre ruaud#which is a poem about papas serving as protection and a sort of shelter for their children. so ig ml is saying gabriel started this way too#i think the fandom glosses over the complexity of adrien's feelings for his father bc in earlier seasons he defended + made excuses for him#part of this is because he was sheltered + didn't know better but it's also bc he DOES recall a time before his mother's illness grew worse#(some time between age 6 and the werepapas flashback) when he didn't have an absentee father. the show writes gabriel agreste#inconsistently: in earlier seasons he had moments of concern for his son before he became awful all the time. and these on/off moments give#adrien whiplash because he's left doing things like becoming a model for his father (i'm choosing to believe gabriel didn't use the rings#until later bc much of the earlier seasons make no sense if he was controlling adrien) in the hopes that they'll bond only to realize#his father still won't spend time with him even for a meal. s5 has gabriel making him pancakes (the wrong way) and asking about his day#and his friends and interests only for him to become even more controlling and mean. how he let him quit modeling only to create an#AI version of him without his consent and when he said that made him feel uncomfortable gabriel convinced him it was fine bc now he had#more free time! only to still control how he spent that free time. adrien didn't start grappling with these things until s5#and now he laments the things he never actually got to say about the papa he misses and the father he wished had unconditionally loved him

so the anime adapted this
but didn't adapt this...?
ok, sure, let's make the already most shallow friendship in this manga even more of a yuri bait.
#i am not surprised tho the anime doesn't really care about aoi#did you see how long/full of budget the 'hanako possesses Nene and harras Aoi' scene was? while they refused to add even a quick slide show#to inform the audience that Aoi being popular fucked up her life to the point of being harrased AS A TINY KID?#they already used her for the 'there are hands in these pictures' exposition in season 1 and her feelings has 'no use' for the main trio#so way it goes!#if empty fanservice is the goal of course it is better to leave 'the important thing she have to say!' hidden#and keep anything about 'boys want her' only jokey to make people not think about hanako's actions too hard#it makes so much sense that it makes me depressed.#if we do reach the grim reaper arc in the future i do not have much hope for how they'll treat aoi story#tbhk#toilet bound hanako kun#jshk#jibaku shounen hanako kun

The lack of Ivan in Till's memories is actually a positive thing
It's important to understand: when we see Till's POV in the music videos, what he is focusing on remembering is his abuse. It may seem like he's focusing on his infatuation with Mizi, but that's just what he relied on to survive.
Ivan going ahead and throwing all that extra stress and upset and turmoil on him is just the cherry on top. Still, Till doesn't associate him with his abuse and trauma, as evidenced by the fact Ivan never shows up in memories from his POV.
Essentially, the lack of Ivan means Till does not associate him with his abuse nor as a coping strategy.
The one time we do see Ivan in Till's POV, it's from Ivan traumatizing him too.

#alien stage#alnst#alien stage till#alnst till#alien stage ivan#alnst ivan#ivantill#alien stage analysis#alnst analysis#this is probably the most interesting take I have tbh#wanted to post it ahead of karma bc who knows what'll happen#not me I hope#not me I really really hope#...#I also have an explanation for why Till doesn't put as much weight to Ivan's kindness toward him as it seems like he should#might go back to finishing icons first tho idk#depends how bad Karma fucks me up#and how it fucks me up lol#I suspect if we do see Ivan from Till's perspective they'll be sentimental “precious memories” that'll show Till *did* care for & love Ivan#but we'll only be seeing them *now* because now they are inherently in a negative context#hm... it could have been interesting to post this after we get more info about Till too but well#I'll just make another post about it lol 😅

judgement day 🌕
#persona 3#persona 3 spoilers#aigis#minato arisato#makoto yuki#nyx avatar#lizzy does art#a belated january 31st from me to you! i technically started this at the start of january but got a lil sidetracked teehee! but its done no#i am forever enamored with the fight with nyx avatar- not only is she gorgeous but the boss fight's design really sells the themes of p3 im#i still love how much the major arcana are intertwined with p3's story- from the full moon operations and the final fight#and the lengthiness of the fight. i personally don't consider it tedious bc i came Very Prepared (its the love for grinding in tartarus!)-#but i think that the length has always been a testament to the indomitable force that nyx and nyx avatar are- something that should be-#impossible to go against! yet sees continues to show their perseverance in the endeavor because that's the choice they ultimately made.#i hope to get the chance to draw nyx avatar again sometime! she is absolutely lovely to draw. i had a lot of fun working on this :D#and i also hope everyone has been enjoying the remake <3 i've been enjoying it a lot but i won't be elaborating here. take care!

that post which acknowledges the weight of bruce not telling jason about willis' death is a godsend, it is such a major breach of trust and it happens at the beginning of jason's robin career as well and imo really sets the tone. to me it was always where jason's trust in bruce started to fracture and the diplomat's son was the last straw after which he desperately starts looking for someone to trust (a parent).
i think the change in jason's backstory in post-crisis is a major in-universe reason for why bruce's parenting stops working for jason. pre-crisis jason lost his parents in a singular moment due to an act of violence just like bruce (and dick) which bruce personally knows well and has already had experience helping dick with so he is able to be a relatively better parent to jason (i mean he was still a fumbler with the whole dyeing the hair, comparing them, jason not having time for much outside of robin and all but still much better that post-crisis). when the crisis happens and jason's trauma changes that similarity ends. jason is now a child who took care of his mother in her final days and had to survive poverty and homelessness. his loss of his parents is a slow painful process. bruce cannot relate to any of these things but he still approaches jason with that same tactic which worked for him and for dick. jason understandably wouldn't respond well to this.
none of this is jason's fault but it displays that bruce is not very capable of handling or personally helping people with trauma that he does not understand himself. he also does not understand why he is unable to help jason or why jason isn't responding to his methods. this combined with alfred's fuckass classist bullshit combines into everyone viewing jason as a problematic child instead.
i think this is why bruce being the best dad ever to jason in before his death does not work for me in a post-crisis setting because bruce fucks up a lot of things from the get-go, i do not think jason ever really felt that secure in that timeline despite the adoption (which i have seen a lot of people use as proof of their bond's stability before jason's death but i think that is incomplete without understanding why their bond fractured in spite of that). i mean there is a reason why jason doesn't even think that bruce would help him with his mom quest. the garzonas case is not a "omg why is my supportive loving dad suddenly not trusting me on this" but more of a "this man who i thought i am supposed to depend on has proved to me yet again that he does not trust me". jason doesn't really seem all that concerned or surprised with bruce not believing him imo, almost like he didn't expect bruce's explicit trust in him. which he is right to do because bruce has proven multiple times that he does not trust jason and that jason cannot trust him. garzonas was always the straw that broke the camel's back.
The post
I dont have much to add to this I really really like it and just like, YEAH yeah exactly.
#hope i got the post right is been a bit#awahh i havent been able to think of any like rambling additions i could say so i didnt answer but awoughhhhhh i will not. freeing this as#really good#absolutely the KNOWING willis was dead and hiding it should be MAJOR#i soemtimes have sad thoguths on that like on Jason thinking about writing to willis or finding him or seeing him again#and like. how does that effect the initial dynamic. and oughh#AND THE WHOLE FIRING DICK FOR BEING A KID#ask#just.. awah#thats such a major think to KNOW and yet not say#and yet hide. Jason is older than me and yet I will not tell him this <-batman. JUST. AHH. Like thats withholding information#that's a lack of trust#thats not caring#thats showing he cant be trusted#did it feel that the missions. the cases. were priority. were what matters.. SO MUCH possibility on what to feel#jason todd#fav#🎠🏚🌊

Okay so I've heard this said a bunch of times and I'm gonna admit I thought like that too for a while but no, Gi-hun did not win the games because he was lucky. A lot of people think that's how he won because he never killed anybody but that's really not the point. Gi-hun won the games because a) he's smart and is able to look at things from a different angle, b) because he is a good and kind person who also believes in others and c) because of the goodness and care get got back from other people.
In the first game he survived because Ali saved him and that wasn't luck, that was Ali being a good person and helping somebody not get killed. Ali could've not caught him, let him die, he didn't even know Gi-hun at all at that point and he put himself in more danger too by having to hold on to a person while standing completely still but he still saved Gi-hun because Ali is a good person.
In the Dalgona game he quite literally Was Not Lucky. He decided to go with the umbrella which is the worst shape to pick and he probably would have died if he hadn't looked at the game in a different way and decided to change his strategy. Gi-hun is smart. He is also optimistic and so he tried something new and found a different way to beat that game.
In the third game he survived because he was smart and kind enough to listen to Il-nam. The other people in their group dismissed him as just an old man speaking but Gi-hun didn't and that way they had a good strategy to beat the other team. The same goes for him listening to Sang-woo's idea of running three steps and then stopping, which ultimately was what saved them. His group also chose him as their leader (who, as Il-nam said, needs to not seem weak or loose hope because then the whole team is doomed). His team trusted in him and his optimism and they were right to do so.
In the marbles game he won because he was once again kind and decided to team up with Il-nam and also because in the end Il-nam decided to "sacrifice himself" for Gi-hun because he showed him kindness before. Yes Il-nam didn't actually die but he also knew that Gi-hun had cheated and still let him continue on to the next game, probably because Gi-hun had been good and kind and caring towards him before, even though he really didn't have to be. Gi-hun also didn't know this but by teaming up with Il-nam he inadvertently ensured that Il-nam had a lot more fun in the games than he would have had, had everybody just ignored to "old, fragile man". Gi-hun was good to Il-nam throughout all the games and it ended up saving him in the marbles game.
In the fifth game it's only some small moments as Gi-hun isn't really involved in the game because he's the last number but still it wasn't just luck. First of all he was kind enough to give the number 1 to the player that asked him for it. Yes, that number was bad but he didn't know that and had he been selfish enough to say no to that other player he wouldn't have survived. Being the last to play in any game can end up being bad for you, still he decided to give up the number he picked because the other player asked him to. Secondly he also survived that game because Sae-byeok was kind enough to remind him of which glass tile to step on after he had forgotten which one it was. It's only small but she didn't have to tell him and still she did. Sae-byeok btw is also good to him because before that he was good to her and protected her (even though he was angry at her at first) and that way he was able to gain her trust.
Lastly he won the Squid Game because Gi-hun was kind to Sang-woo and because Sang-woo deep down was still a good person. There were probably many reasons as to why Sang-woo decided to kill himself in the end but part of it, I'm sure, was also because Gi-hun was a good friend to him. I mean Gi-hun was even willing to give up all the money and go back home with nothing gained if it meant that Sang-woo didn't have to die and would be able to come home with him. Gi-hun deserved that win and that money and in the end Sang-woo knew that. He also knew that Gi-hun would make sure to take care of Sang-woo's mother and that he wouldn't just take all the money for himself because Sang-woo knew that Gi-hun is a good person. (Gi-hun technically also won the Squid Game because he was good at it which is also him being smart)
So in conclusion and I hope y'all haven't stopped reading yet: Gi-hun didn't win the games because he was lucky. He didn't just sit around doing nothing and won anyways. He won because he was smart but even more importantly he won because of the kindness and goodness that exists in humans and that is especially present in him. He won because he had empathy, because people trusted him, because he got back from them what he gave to them first. He never killed anyone and we can clearly see that he Could Never kill anyone in those games but that's not his weakness. Just because he didn't let himself get corrupted and turned into what the games wanted him to turn into doesn't mean he won because of luck. Him not playing by those subtle, hidden rules that are made to force him to be bad, to not care about others and to give up his kindness actually means he was better than the games. He won because he didn't let them turn him into a monster. They tried really hard and they failed and that's how he won!! But also on top of that he also won because he isn't the only good person in this show. He also won because other people helped him, were kind to him and gave a shit about him. Each and every person that helped Gi-hun didn't have to do that. They all could have not helped him, Ali could have not caught him, Sae-byeok could have not told him which one was the correct glass tile, hell, she could have Lied to him about it and the only difference it would have made for the other players would have been them being one more dead person closer to winning all that money. But that's really not how humans are and act which is why all these people helped Gi-hun, helped each other in small or big ways and in the end his own kindness and the kindness that exists in other people is what lead to Gi-hun winning. That's not luck. That humans being good
#people underestimate my man so much and he's literally the main character#gosh this post is so long i hope people even read it fully#man (gn) i was never able to just write out essays on some random topic for school#but when it's about my favorite show i can write some long ass analysis post on the goodness in humans shown in a series about death games#or really anything to do with any show or movie i love#like#it's mostly in the small details which are much more subtle and unnoticed than the bad things some characters do#but also#it's because that isn't normal#somebody like deoksu pushing people to their deaths in the glass bridge game is much more uncommon than somebody like saebyeok reminding you#which tile is the right one to step on#of course we notice that big bad thing happening more because it's not normal it's not what we see every day#but somebody helping you out somebody being kind that somebody maybe even being someone you don't know at all#we see that every day#every day we go out into the world and help each other survive and sometimes it's in big ways but even if it's just small things#we see that every day everywhere in the world because in the end that's what people are like#people aren't mean for no reason or actively plan on how to take you down#(well some people are but those people are the exception)#instead most people will either just let you live your life but very often also help you and care and be good#anyways i feel like i'm getting off topic but yeah#that's how gihun won#because humanity is good and he represents the best of humanity#as in kindness goodness care and sometimes even sacrificing your own comfort to save somebody else#that is who gihun is and that is ultimately what helped him survive#lea's random thoughts#squid game#squid game analysis#seong gi hun#seong gihun#cho sang woo

i might be thinking too much about this rather irrelevant background story for the ancient queen and ganondorf (.. yes still botw2/totk rewrite ................ its background stuff you dont get to see, it would just be a line in a hidden diary and some environtmental story telling- that bracelet being in his room- wrote a longer text post about it today but uh .. heres a doodle that took me too long to make bndksbnsd)
#ganondoodles#art#zelda#doodle#ganondorf#ganondoodles rewrites totk#botw2#i hope using that tag is fine#i dont even know if im gonna give this rewrite an actual name#though i did think about leaving it the same but the 'tears' being tears as in ripped apart#but how would i make that clear in written form lol#any YES i am thinking too much about tiny background details that are optional to find#i like the idea of having both quests for lore enthusiasts and those that only care about gameplay#and yes my pattern of pairings is showing .........#the only thing i like about rauru was the possible ship with ganondorf bc it made the 'story' mildly more interesting#and i didnt change that to not make it gay (hello? who am i??)#but bc 1. i wanted to give the sonia figure (here ancient zelda) the main part 2. .. she is the one with sealing powers#the colors always look better on my tablet but i think its calibrated right- i did somethign with my desktop screen once though#so im hoping it looks normal for everyone else#anyway- goodnight (1am gang lets goooo)

Ya know, Castlevania tackled the concept that life after defeating Dracula could be difficult for a Belmont with Richter feeling like he’d lost all purpose and reason to go on living if not for saving others and fighting against something—
But, do you think any of them before him felt that way too?
I mean it sounds kind of miserable, being raised your whole life to be solely relied on for one moment… and then what? How do you handle the sudden shift to ‘not being needed anymore’? Evidently, most of them didn’t have very much happen to them after the events of their games since we don’t get to know—
But, do you think any of them ever got better? Do you think anyone before Richter ever learned how to live for themselves? Did Richter?
Anyway it’s 8 PM and I’m sitting around wondering if any of the Belmonts were still happy after their happy endings (debatable if certain ones got happy endings tbh but anyway), Konami can u check on them, I’m worried—
#like do you think Trevor ever stopped going out looking for stragglers#do you think he couldn’t convince himself it was ever really over after Curse of Darkness#what do you think Christopher thought about handing the whip over to his son#do you think ever he wished he didn’t have to— do you think he hoped somehow he’d stopped it forever that last time#do you think Soleil felt the same after he had to past it on#how long do you think Simon thought about how he could’ve done it differently— do you think he thought he didn’t do well enough#do you think Simon died feeling like the family’s second failure#do you think Juste felt like his encounter didn’t count#do you think he and Maxim felt similarly about needing to be important#hmm just a lot of things to think about#castlevania#castlevania games#akumajo dracula#text post#akumajou dracula#incoherent rambling#let me tell you when I say I have headcanons about tiny intricacies of characters#I have headcanons about tiny intricacies about characters—#like here’s one: Simon puts his hands on or scratches the back of his neck as a nervous tic—#he likes the color byzantine he puts his eartails back when fighting cause they get in the way he sleeps on his face cause his back hurts—#he jokes about the bad situations he’s in he idolizes people way too easily and he takes everything people say to heart but doesn’t show it#I think he probs didn’t take beating Dracula the first time very well if Richter’s possession being inspired by his Quest means anything—#aoouggh then I take the ending of CV2 the way I do and mannnnnnnnnn—#do you think he knew people would care about and look up to him so much after that?#does anyone else think about things like this?#ah the tragedy of the Belmont family#hmmm anyway—

it’s now 3 am but now i’m a squeaky clean boy so uhhh grabbing this out the lovely lego server i’m in to place here !!

number 1 -> two things I immediately noticed is emmet having a participation award and a diploma!! As well as him being completely alone on a roller coaster ride which is so sad and miserable, how can a cheery house be so underlying-ly empty… but also he has a trophy !! (perhaps another participation thing but still!! (i like thinking it was for his opera singing voice :D))

and 2 !!! a small thing i noticed (that might be me overanalysing but who knows!!) with how emmet’s animated, is how he moves a lot more expressively than everyone else, like with the dry cleaning he basically skips along while everyone else just walks and when the construction workers cheer emmet jumps much higher than all of them! (a tad hard to visualise in still form but yeah!)
Very fitting for Emmet of course — but it’s cool seeing how he’s already portrayed as a *little* different from everyone else through his happy nature and kinda sorta alludes to him being the ‘special’ or in general how his personality is compared to everyone else in a very small way in such a small amount of time which I find so cool and awesome—!!

small other things i noticed within the first .. 15 minutes !!! is emmet driving a very ordinary Octan made car, which is very fitting once again but also when he’s first driving he waves at someone !! joys !!
also he was completely out of the loop when the building was blown up .. emmet your poor ears buddy

also the radio show/music is called Rocktan which is very important and lovely to me i think
#the lego movie#tlm#i didn’t screenshot this but when he was walking with the rest of the construction crew before he lost his instructions -#he also moved a lil more exaggerated with him having slightly longer strides and higher jumps#this is the level of care i put into my analysis#i do think he’s animated with a slightly shorter or longer frame rate around some parts (especially in the city)#it’s kinda like how in spiderverse they used different frame rates to differentiate characters#and it would be fun for emmet since it would further \ very very subtly show this small rift he has with everyone else despite being ‘normal#it’s just those small things that make me love this movie so much more it has so much passion in it#this is only the first 10-15 minutes and there’s so so much !!#not even mentioning the signs or the background characters jokes or even playing where’s waldo with emmet in the construction scene#there’s so much !!!#anywho i really need to go to sleep now - i have school !!#i hope this was worded alright - sorry for any misspellings or miswording <:D

Anyway I wish this show was actually bold enough to give Miguel an arc exploring his feelings of entitlement over the captaincy spot. Throughout the show Johnny has repeatedly told Miguel that Robby is a lost cause but hey, It’s okay because he has Miguel now. That Miguel’s his champion, his Number One Boy. So how could Miguel not feel at least somewhat entitled to the captain spot? How could he not feel insecure about his place in Johnny’s life with Robby not just back in the picture, but now literally taking the number one spot? When Johnny has repeatedly put into both kids heads that when it comes to his love and attention its one vs. the other, how could there be no lingering feelings of resentment and jealousy?
#like my kingdom for them to let miguel have Real Actual Feelings about anything ever!#i dont have any real hopes of them actually exploring this#i think any frustration miguel feels towards robbys will be framed solely in the context of him being stressed about getting into stanford#which is also like. i wish this show would show us WHY miguel cares so much about stanford#and its not like its not understandable!#people talk about robbys trauma bc its so plainly obvious#but after the year or two miguels had it makes sense that he wants a real tangible Win#that he wouldn’t want all the pain and trauma to be for nothing. that he can spin it as a triumphant story of how he overcame#some extreme adversity to get into one of the top schools in the country#but the show hasnt actually shown us that miguel feels that way at all#and i dont need them to spell it all out for me hut man it would be nice to give us SOMETHING. literally anything even remotely close to an#actual arc for Miguel before the show ends#and like none of this is miguel or johnny or robby hate btw…characters are flawed and thats a good thing#i just wish the show would actually explore the impact of those flaws on the people around them#and also jealousy is a very normal feeling as is competition in sports#but it would be cool if the explored how that is compounded by everything johnny has put these kids through and the way he has constantly#even if unintentionally positioned them against each other#but anyway!#cobra kai#miguel diaz#robby keene

If the theme for AvA Season 3 is really "Your actions have consequences"...
I am genuinely curious to see what the consequences for Victim's actions will be.
Both Alan and Chosen are reaping the consequences of their actions. How is Victim going to reap his own?
How is all of this going to backfire on him?
And at what point will he realize he's gone too far, that he's made a mistake? That he's become someone he never wanted to become?
#*Pointing at 'The King'* I WANT THAT YOUR HONOR BUT CRANKED UP TO A HUNDRED#*sssniperthief voice* Oh well if it isn't the consequences of my own actions!#Jokes aside: I have a huge feeling that things WILL go sour for Victim in ways he can't control or didn't expect#Where he will be forced to confront his own terrible actions just as much as TCO and Alan will be forced to face theirs#And I believe that Victim will feel regret when he realizes he was wrong because AvA11 showed us he wasn't really a terrible person#I believe that Victim is still redeemable and I won't give up hope on that#Also a reminder that AvA Season 3 is supposed to go to Episode 15 so we have FOUR MORE EPISODES FOR SHIT TO HIT THE FAN#Also still holding out hope that Alan saves Victim in some way#Preferably in a way that is detrimental/harmful to Alan himself#Because that would be an amazing way to show - CLEARLY - just how much Alan has changed#and how much he's come to care for his stick figures - ALL of them. Victim included.#Just the idea of the Cursor vehemently protecting Victim; aflame with rage and viscous in its movement is such a delicious image in my brai#ava#animator vs animation#alan becker#Illmoraine Theorizes#ava victim

no but essek's abnormal behaviours in the last arc and especially in episode 140 are my roman empire. which is ironic because aeor is something of a roman empire itself. but in all seriousness, it was the episode that made me realise i love essek and his development so much and it kinda summarised it even before caleb's epilogue.
and i mean the "it's not fair" scene specifically. it's like, an epitome of his whole character progression from a person who put An Objectively Important Goal above all else without hesitation to someone who can't help but care for people around even more than his goal, no matter how big and relevant it is.
the mighty nein - and he alongside them - pretty much saved the world and freed an ancient city from thousand-year-long suffering. they defeated nine extremely powerful menacing entities who managed to stay out of everyone's sight for years and were so close to achieving their goal and dooming exandria in the process. they did the impossible and became heroes and somehow, they survived, even though they had bidden farewells a couple of hours ago because they had already understood what they had been facing. and nevertheless. they made it.
and none of them was celebrating.
mighty nein are basically essek's only friends. he knew them to be very unusual people, to put it lightly, loud and stubborn and completely inescapable once they consider you to be one of their own. and they showed him so much kindness and put so much faith in him, they were here playing the most atrocious music ever and digging clay in his backyard for a spell they invented just to help one of theirs and asking him if he could bring them pastries the day after they found out he was lying to them and had started a war. they were chaotic and weird and sometimes unbearable but most importantly they were carrying so much hope with them all this time - a hope they could end the war, a hope they could stop the angel of irons cult, a hope they could get better, a hope he could get better, and now, finally, that they could save their lost friend.
and that hope shattered, just like that, the moments after they'd already made the impossible. they saved so many souls - and then could not get back just that one.
for essek "my intentions were never good they were important" thelyss it just. shouldn't have mattered. they won. it could have been worse. people die and when they die they rarely come back. they should've been happy everyone else barely made it alive.
but for some reason, mighty nein being so defeated after they saved the world exposed him to that overwhelming feeling of injustice and unfairness. and i mean, there were many things essek considered to be unfair, but when i watched his first appearance and his interactions with mighty nein later on til their reunion in aeor arc, i wouldn't dare to guess that one of the things on that list would be something that personal. and personal not even to him.
the thing is, essek didn't even know who that guy was. why mighty nein cared about him so much. he had an idea, i guess, that he was their friend once, or someone in that body was. it was also a person who wanted to unleash a terrifying horrific aberration onto the material plane. it was a person very dedicated to killing essek and his friends - and they still didn't take any pleasure in fighting him. essek didn't feel strongly about lucien or molly, because he never knew them.
i don't think he mourned his death and failed resurrection. he mourned mighty nein's hope, the one they put in him when they had no reason to, the one they offered yasha in the cathedral and the one they kept after the spell for veth failed and the one they carried til the very end because they wanted it to reach molly. they had saved people with this hope. they had saved nations. they had saved the world. but they ended up feeling like it hadn't even been worth anything.
how desperate would it feel, witnessing people who for some reason always saw good in you when they absolutely shouldn't, who made literal miracles out of nothing, who ended wars and fought gods and tricked the hags and freed cities from horrors beyond anyone's comprehension purely because they thought it was the right thing to do and also loved their friends this much, silently crying over a dead body they couldn't bring back to life? how desperate would it feel to realise that with all your knowledge about time you dedicated your life to and threw away any principles for, you can't undo this? no one can. some things are left to fate alone and this time it wasn't kind to them. no matter how much good they did, they still got slapped in the face.
and it was, i think, such a genuine moment of empathy. like, essek is the character who prefers to put up a facade and act distant and self-composed but this time he just. walked away unable to watch this. the could only say to fjord that it wasn't fair. even when he was caught off guard in nicodranas he was able to explain himself and his motives to an extent even though he was a nervous wreck whose extra important plan went to hell the second the only people he cared about appeared. this time he had nothing to elaborate on. it just wasn't fair. it wasn't fair his friends didn't get what they wanted the most. it wasn't fair he couldn't do anything to make it right.
it is such a sad and beautiful and even cathartic scene because it is about person who started a war that destroyed so many lives - and then met this ragtag group of weirdos who saw a lonely stand-offish guy and said "hey, let's be friends!" and didn't even wait for him to answer. he saw them being serious and calculated and he saw them being ridiculous and extremely stupid, he saw their mistrust to outsiders and their loyalty to each other, he made spells with them and paid a visit to their hot tub, he ate their stale pastries and drank their hot chocolate mixed with whiskey, he was welcomed amongst them and in their wonderful home, both in xhorhas before they even found out what he had done and in the tower when they already knew - and then, he saw them mourning their loss, defeated and helpless, and he, a person who believed there were things more important than whole nations, let alone just one life, couldn't help but share the pain they felt. a pure display of compassion from someone who detached himself from it, who didn't believe he could grow into a better person capable of it again, but became one nonetheless without even realising it
#sorry. i cannot shut up about this. this scene stuck with me the moment i saw it and i just couldn't get it out of my head#i mean. i liked essek well enough. i just got attached to other characters more. but then 'it's not fair' happened and it sealed the deal#it was just. so beautiful. so sincere. so important for a character who just started to learn how to care about people#his reaction wasn't intentional. it didn't change anything. but it showed how humane he had become. how deeply he cared#mighty nein are no joke pal#they're gonna make you feel all these unknown emotions like sympathy and love and affection even when they're incredibly painful#essek experiencing closeness and attachment in all their forms. as something beautiful and something aching. is so important to me#they saved him because they had good hearts! and these good hearts sparked so much joy around them!#but if a good heart grants you an ability to experience joy so profoundly. it makes everything else feel like that#you get it. i hope you get it. anyway e140 did so much psychic damage on me i probably will never recover#in a good way mostly <3 but yeah. yeah. it makes me feel a little insane#the mighty nein#essek thelyss#critical role
