Little bright colored outfit with a fun vest ~
(shoes from ebay like 10 years ago. everything else is thrifted)
#ootd#jfashion#fashion#fantasy fashion#mori kei#....like... adjacent... lol#no idea what style this would be lol.. makes me think of like whimsical vaguely fantasy themed childrens book character#finally posting one of my aforementioned seven million drafts of actual outfits and costumes i have finished and edited#the photos for but just never feel like posting lol..#I need to find one of those people whos like 'omg i am ADDICTED to social media ugh i wish i could get off of it#im just browsing and posting like 60 times a daaaaay!!!' and take a little magical bottle and suck some of the social media#enthusiasim out of them. for moi. In exchange they can have some of my 'literally just never in the mood to post or interact with the#outside world ever' energy. We can balance each other. huzzah and so on#Though I think maybe it's part of the general thing I've heard of like.. I can't remember if it was in reference to adhd or just some sort#of general execcutive functioning issue type of thing - but the idea that things have to be ''just right'' before you do something. like#'oh i need to do this task. but i have to wait until XYZ first' or 'oh i can do this but only if X specific condition is met' or etc#The fact that I even have to be in a Specific Mindset to post. or sometimes will delay posting on social media because like 'oh well#I'm going somewhere tomorrow. somehow this matters. i cannot spend 5 minuts posting TONIGHT. clearly it will interfere#somehow schedule wise with the doctor appointment i have 15 hours from now. yes. yes. i must wait until my appointment is over#tomorrow afternoon. I havent#been to the bins since like 2020 or late 2019 even. and I think stuff like shein and temu has only become poular in the past few years#but I bet if I went to the bins now I might would find a good handfull of that stuff. Probably now not much different than what you#find in a walmart or a forever 21 or actual physical stores you can go to though. I hear quality of clothing is down everywhere no matter#where you get it or whatnot. What bountiful joys unfettered capitalism and exploitation bestows upon us (<being sarcastic).#Wearing one of my favorite little vests though. I love the texture of it and the clasps on it

The X trilogy + "psycho-biddy" influences
#x 2022#pearl#maxxxine#x series#strait-jacket#psycho#what ever happened to baby jane#horror#psycho-biddy#hagsploitation#made this whole big thing which i still might post eventually but. in terms of aesthetics. this abridged version is better lol#i'm not gonna finish the other post tonight but consider this a preview of sorts#i can't stop thinking about what if they leaned more into the 'hagsploitation' aspect of it all lol#i actually find it odd + off-putting that they start and end maxxxine with a bette davis reference#with a big significant psycho cameo at the bates motel itself#and there's not really any payoff for those allusions!!#i think if you're gonna try to tie into a legacy of older horror films you should do it in a sincere way#because that just felt like 'elevated horror' bonus points + nostalgia bait#anyway. it's fun to think about the potential it had + how all the building blocks exist within the narrative to do something interesting#and i am a 1960s hagsploitation subgenre apologist lol#what ever happened to baby jane? changed my brain chemistry the first time i watched it as a kid#so maybe i'm just nostalgia baiting myself making these connections lmao#but it could have been so good#it could have been the perfect synthesis of the shared themes across all three movies#but i don't think hagsploitation gets butts in movie theater seats like girlboss 80s nostalgia vaguely true crime related shit#oh wait also i guess calling psycho a hagsploitation movie is like. probably not 100% accurate#but it is though. it's not an inversion of the subgenre bc the subgenre didn't exist yet#but it builds up a mystery 'psycho-biddy' character only to reveal that she's not the murderer#which is also what happens in strait-jacket so i think it counts!!#+ psycho is directly referenced in all 3 movies so it’s a pretty clear influence on the trilogy as a whole

DCA Promptober Day 20: Trapped
Finally, the last part of the mini-series. Hope you enjoy, she's a doozy
Content warning: depictions of blood, injury, and death, reader discresion is advised
Word Count: 2001
🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
"Come on Tommy, don't be stupid, don't be stupid," You're pacing through the Plex, checking every odd and end location you can think of for where this kid might be.
Fourteen minutes.
He's moving back toward the security office, yes, but where he started from you have no idea. Furthermore, you can't risk going back there as you've no doubt Moon's prowling around trying to get him. You also don't think it's wise to let the bot know directly that you were flat out rejecting his offer.
You duck behind another tall plant, eyes scanning across the atrium for any sign of life, "Okay, if I were a teenager, where would I hide?"
Fazerblast? No, too obvious. West arcade? Too open, you'll give him credit where it's due and argue that he's smarter than that. Mazercise was a possibility, it was just a matter of getting there. You had no idea if the other animatronics were also feeling murderous tonight and you'd really rather not find out. Shit, if you had Garcia with you maybe this wouldn't be so hard-
A scream pierces through the Plex, sending fear shooting straight to your core.
Your feet move before you can stop them, rushing toward the sound without any hesitation.
"No, no, no, no, no, no, no," You start to chant until you come upon the scene of the crime and-
It's not Tom.
One of the janitors is being held up by their neck, blood covered hands desperately grabbing at the clawed hand holding them high above the night-themed attendant. You can only snap out of it when Moon's other hand suddenly plunges forward and-You close your eyes, flinching at the squelch you here before a thud resounds on the ground.
You keep your eyes close, backing further behind the statue you were hiding behind, until you finally hear bells fade off into the distance.
Ten minutes.
You peel them open, one after the other, and dare to observe the carnage just briefly.
Doing so proves useful, as attached to the-most definitely dead-janitor's hip is a walkie talkie. You scan the atrium quickly, see nothing, and move swiftly.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," You whisper as you quickly snatch up the radio from the bloodied corpse.
Once you have it you bolt back into a darkened corner, turning the channel to the guard frequency.
You speak low, cautious, "Tom, you there?"
"H-here," He whispers back, sounding on edge but, excited, "I, I made it back into the office! Where are you? The bots are going frickin' crazy tonight! We gotta find the others and get out of here, or, or something," You hear him jamming buttons on the control panel, "Why can't I get the front doors to open, or or call the cops, or just anything?"
Relief washes over you, but only briefly. Moon might have been distracted but it hadn't been for long. Your friend's not in the clear yet, "Listen. Lock down the office. If you hear anything in the vents, shut them immediately. But not too long, the stupid power's finicky so you'll need to conserve it. Turn out the lights and the cameras if you need to. Someone's probably flipped the circuit for the door access. I'm gonna try and get them open for you. Once I do, you time it right and get the hell out of dodge, got it?"
"You, you're talking like you aren't coming with," Tom's laugh is nervous, "Why are you talking like you aren't leaving?"
You sigh, looking up at the ceiling and biting your lip. You still had eight minutes. You could save yourself instead. The thought passes by as quickly as it arrived. To your credit, nobody really wants to die, it just happens. And if it's between you and someone else, you'll let it be you.
You'll make sure it's you.
You press on the talk button to the radio, "'Cause I'm not, Tom. Not right this second anyway. I'll worry about me, you worry about you, alright? And don't argue with me about it, we don't have the time for that."
"I-"
"Tom." You hate to be stern, but you will be.
He sighs, it's shaky, "Okay."
"I'll let you know when I'm at the circuit box. Stay safe. Good luck."
"Good luck."
Seven minutes.
It doesn't take long to get to your destination, you know the path well. Just being direct and taking the elevator down also helps. Does fuck all to steel your nerves though. You're scared, you're downright terrified. Dying wasn't on your to-do list for tonight. No, you were planning to spend the night teasing Rhoades and Connor about the Grizzlies game while halfheartedly helping Jenson beat them at ping-pong.
You just don't understand. Was there something that you're missing? Some piece to the puzzle that made all of this make sense. You've gone over it again and again in your head, but you can't find an answer. You can't find-
Three minutes.
A noise down the hallway becomes noticeable to your ears. It sounds like, you strain a bit, Garcia?
You approach slowly, his words becoming clearer as you slink down the hall, keeping a look out for any movement that could result in a deadly outcome.
His voice is coming from the closet you know the circuit breaker is in. You can make out what he's saying when you're at the crossroads of the two hallways, about ten feet away.
"Help... Please," He wheezes, then coughs, "Anybody? Somebody..."
You take a step forward and peek down both ends of the hall intersecting where you've come from. It's dark. No signs of life. Or anything else for that matter.
Still, armed with your flashlight-you'd lost the taser, though you doubt it'd have been much use anyhow-you tip toe over to the door, and pull it open.
"Garcia you're lucky I'm scared of my mind, or I'd be giving you hell right about now-"
He's dead.
One minute.
His body is slouched against the wall, arms splayed out beside him not unlike the bloodstains behind him. There's red running down his head and additionally soaking through his shirt. Laying neatly on his chest and still squeaky clean is his walkie, which repeats that same line over and over again.
A trick.
Time's up.
"That was supposed to lure in someone else, not you, Little Star."
You turn around slowly, thinking that it buys you time you don't have.
Even slouched over Moon towers over you. Clawed, stained hands scrape against the ground. In this level of darkness you can only see the deep red glow of his eyes. He tilts his head.
You swallow, "Guess it didn't work then, huh?"
"I gave you another chance," He shifts just a little closer, you take a step back, "You wasted it. Why?"
"I'm a good person?" You try.
Moon chuckles, it turns dark quickly, "You think you're funny, is that it?"
"Maybe?" You squeak.
He sudden looms closer, now eye to eye with you and mere inches away, snarling, "You don't have any right."
You put your hands up, shying away.
The bot shifts back, tone still unhappy but not as angry, "You don't have any right at all. Not after what you did."
"I'm sorry but I don't-"
You feel a sharp talon on the front of your chest. Not poking through your shirt. Not yet.
"You made a promise. And you didn't keep it."
You're taken back to several months ago. Out on a typical patrol, nothing exciting. You're about to check the Daycare off your mental list when a pair of red eyes greets you on the wall.
Ah, him again. You didn't necessarily have a problem with the Daycare Attendant. But much like anyone else you felt either one of them were a bit, unnerving. The naptime attendant seemed to always take particular interest in you while you were on patrol. You'd caught him staring from afar several times, never really approaching say for once in a blue moon. And only to very briefly say hello before hiding away again.
He must be feeling a bit bolder today.
You raise your hand in greeting, easy smile on your face, "Evening, Moon."
"Hello," For a such a tall bot, he sometimes spoke so small.
"What're you up to this evening?" Your hands slink into your pockets, "Besides the usual, that is."
He shifts his crouch slightly, bells jingling, "Just, the usual, I suppose."
"Sounds like you need something to spice up your time then. You ever play any games in there?" You nod your head to the Daycare.
He shakes his head slowly, "Not me. Only naps."
You click your tongue, trying your best to not let the pity show, "Bummer. Say, maybe we could do something together sometime."
"Really?"
"Sure," You shrug, "Doesn't have to be a game, we could do whatever you'd like. I promise it'll be fun."
Knowing how shy he is you doubt he'll actually take you up on that offer. He'll probably forget about it by tomorrow, that's how these machines work, right?
"Do you mean it?" His voice is raspy, but the tone is soft, shy. Cute, even.
You smile, "You bet. Sometime soon, how's that?"
"O-okay."
You give a salute, walking off, "I'll see you later then, Moon-man."
"Goodbye."
Back to now, eyes wide as you stare up at the Attendant with realization.
You didn't just agree to play a game.
You'd promised a date.
And you'd completely forgotten about it, like a complete and utter jerk.
"Oh, Moon. I didn't," You stop, frowning, "I wasn't trying to-"
"Exactly, you didn't try. You lied. And I despise liars."
He's moving, you need to move. You need to think. Come on. Don't let it all be in vein.
Your hand acts on its own, swinging upwards with your flashlight in hand and flipping it on. Moon yelps. And while he's blinded you take a slight step back and send a roundhouse kick straight into his faceplate.
It hurts like hell, but it causes him to stumble backwards. You quickly turn, open the breaker box, and flip the switch.
Spinning back around, you see Moon's still recovering, you dodge past his blind swinging claws and blot down the hallway.
"Doors are open. Don't know how long that'll last. See you on the other side, Tom."
Back at the closet, you hear Moon growl out his irritation before taking off after you. And by the sounds of it, is gaining fast.
Turn the corner, you're not trying to outrun him, just keep him distracted long enough for your coworker to escape.
Soon enough, you find yourself in a similar predicament to earlier.
You're grabbed and in trying to right yourself slam into the wall, this one doing you in. You hiss at the pain that shoots up your shoulder, which is on fire, you think you might've dislocated it in your rush.
Moon's hand is still on you, and while his grip is firm, it's not tight. Slowly, he uses both hands and guides you down the wall as you lay back against it.
Your breathing is heavy as you stare up at the ceiling, out of breath and out of time.
"Just do it already," You gasp out, "We both know you want to. And I can't say I don't totally deserve it."
You hear a few clicks and wait for your end.
But when it doesn't come, you look back down, face to face with the bot again.
His head is tilted to the side. Observing you.
Once more, you find Moon's hand gripping your chin, he chuckles, "Silly Star, what's the fun in that?"
You pause, not quite understanding what he's saying.
"You said we could do whatever I'd like, right?" His faceplate spins, "So we're going to do what I'd. Like."
The reality of the situation starts to set in for you.
You're trapped.
And you think that may be worse than death.
🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
If you are physically incapable of roundhouse kicking (as am I) guess what? doesn't matter, you gained the ability for a split second for the purpose of this story. Anywho, virus moon! Or at least, a specific version of virus moon (wink wink nudge nudge). This concludes our little mini-series in the prompts. Twas a good bit of fun, but there are others to write and so, I'll be off. Link to the masterlist is here if you've missed any, thanks for reading!!

So I came to the realization today that I am not going to get anymore work on this trunk done this year. I still need to finish stripping the paper inside and redoing that, but it's just. Not happening until spring. With that realization, I decided it's time to finally bring it back inside, put all the junk on my floor that used to be in it back in it, and guys
It looks good.
This is going to be a summary post of the project, so let's go back and remember what I started with. Back in, like, 2015 or something, I bought this dome-top steamer trunk at a missionary shop for $65
Yeah. Rough. But underneath that paint it was sturdy, and the only thing missing was the lock and the right-side hasp. While I lived overseas this sat in my parents' house, and when I got back I kept meaning to do something while storing all of my yarn and cat food in it. When I finally got my own space (almost a year ago now!) with my own garage, I finally decided: it was time.
Heads up, this is a long post under the cut.
Did a lot of research online, grew to hate how generative AI has even permeated niche topics like how to refinish a vintage steamer trunk, WHY is there generative AI for that, PLEASE stop, went to Lowe's and bought some supplies (I used Citristrip for the paint stripping, it worked VERY easily), and started stripping that hideous brown* away.
Almost instantly I could tell how good it could be. The tin looked amazing, and for most of the stripping process I wondered why on earth someone would cover it with any color. It took multiple layers of stripping, and I got better at it over time.
I did also start to see some oxidation issues with the tin that made the purpose behind the paint job a little more understandable.
One side was particularly bad, but I will never forgive the decision to paint the entire thing one single color.
At first, the flat metal seemed okay, but the longer I worked on stripping, the longer it was exposed to air, the rustier it started to get. I had already planned on coating it, and I ended up getting some Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer spray paint. Instead of removing the rust, it bonds to the oxide and stops the process from continuing. It also happens to leave it a nice matte black that didn't need additional painting. I taped everything off, then sprayed.
Then it was time for the tin. I looked for ideas, and the best one I found was Rub'n'Buff. It's not so much a paint as a pigmented wax, with the idea that you can buff it to a higher shine. As I was stripping paint, I found a spot under one of the slats that the painter missed, and the original tin had been painted a gold color, so I used that to decide on color. I decided on Grecian gold, though I used the antique gold as a kind of base to make sure the Grecian stretched far enough.
I originally started applying it with some craft foam brushes, but they didn't really want to work for me, so I ended up buying a pack of makeup sponges, the little disposable wedge ones, and the finer texture worked much better. I had to trim them down pretty frequently, because the wax would build up and stop applying as nicely, but there were more than enough in the pack to finish the job.
The coverage is amazing for this stuff. This side was the worst of them, and one layer of the stuff was almost perfect. The Grecian gold was almost a bit runnier, though, and ended up needing a second layer to cover some patches that were almost too thin, thus the other underneath.
This tin is so pretty though. I still kind of regret that it needed it; the places that weren't oxidized were so bright in a way that the Rub'n'Buff had no hope of emulating. There are some places you can still buy the embossed tin for rehabing trunks like this, but I haven't found one with a pattern quite like this, and this one is so much nicer than the ones I've seen. I'm very glad that it was all intact except for where the lock goes.
After the tin came the slats. I knew from sites like Brettun's Village that I wanted to use tung oil, so I had bought what I thought was tung oil. Turns out Minwax gets to call their tung oil finish that even though there's. No... tung oil. in it. ? So uh, if you want actual tung oil, do NOT listen to Minwax, they're lying, I don't understand why it's allowed. It still looks nice enough, but quite annoying.
Speaking of Brettun's Village, they not only do their own restorations AND provide a guide, they have a very extensive supply of recently furbished and original parts. They happened to have a nearly identical hasp to the one that was missing (so nearly identical I only noticed after my dad pointed it out) and an old lock also similar to my original, made in the late 1800s/early 1900s.
The next step was to tackle the inside. Instead of just adding more paper on top (like the last people did, so now there are two layers, one of which hides some original stickers ;3;), I decided to try to scrape that out, and I've found some structural issues that the metal and slats outside have held together and kept hidden.
The top split in the wood is an actual crack on the front that needs fixing. The middle split is just the gap between the planks. The bottom is also a crack, but not as extensive as the top one.
So the final steps, when I get the motivation again come spring, is to finish getting as much of the paper off as I can. Then my dad is going to help me use some bondo to hold the cracks, and I'll find a removable wallpaper I like. Then I can sort out what I'm going to do with the lock. That top split runs right through where the lock should go - you can see some of the wood filler we already put in from where the original was ripped out - so we can't try to put anything there or it'll crack worse.
But I brought it in today!
It looks so good, I glance over and get to feel so satisfied; I did that.
*I don't like to call any color hideous, because a lot of the time it really depends on the context, and it's an okay brown. But for THIS? It was probably the worst brown they could have picked. Mixed with the orange of the paint stripper it looked like I was scraping diarrhea.
#long post#vintage trunk#steamer trunk#antiques#antique restoration#antique refinishing#I tried to look up the lock again for the dates they had but they don't have the old stock ones anymore#so my timing was good#mom has wanted some quilting projects so I suggested something for under this#cause it has the original roller wheels! three of them anyway o3o;;;#but I'm afraid that the very old roller wheels will scratch the floor#i gave her the measurements and double checked idk how it ended up so skinny ;3;#but it's good enough#is there a chance that now that I've brought it inside my adhd will think “hey good enough” and never finish the rest?#yes#yes there is absolutely a significant chance#but I am beyond positive that no more work is going to get done before winter#so why leave it out in the garage over winter where it might expand and contract and force those cracks wider#I BARELY tapped the door frame on the way back in and it chipped the door frame though#like what kind of cheap materials did they use how was that even POSSIBLE#rude#oh oops I'm awake too late again tonight I gots work in the morning

skyglow:
(alternative title: photo dump of a midnight desert run)
#photography#Ford's Art#color says shit#it was either go on a twelve mile run or re-download grindr and get absolutely blasted so I went with the more responsible option.#b because damn I'm feeling it tonight. or at least I was before the run. I need to shower and then I'll cook dinner and go to bed satiated.#I did also jerk off under the bridge and then piss on someone's flowers on the way home. gotta get those animal instincts out somehow right?#anyway I've successfully vented most of my manic energy and a cold shower will finish it off and then we're good.#the mood meds have been helping a lot. last time I got hit with this kind of a mood I came out of it with huge bite marks and chlamydia.#and I haven't been feeling it nearly as bad this time so that's nice. more like a restless dog and less like a caged wolf thirsty for blood.#yes I'm making references to Call of the Wild again deal with it.#anyway sorry to anyone who sees this from the tags and not because you follow me. you didn't sign up for this lmao.#also. this is why I can't be a binary trans woman. this night photography shit is the most gay-man thing ever and I enjoy it.#I was doing it before my last boyfriend but he got me even more into it.#anyway bye I'm gonna go shower and then eat food. I've been hungrier more recently.#between the meds and the hrt my appetite is bigger and I'm gaining weight with the hrt fat redistribution which is cool and good.#I want to be a healthy weight and maybe even a lil chonky? we'll see we'll see.

tonight i’m resting and keeping to myself bc i just need a minute, but tomorrow i think i’ll tinker with my rules and tidy up this blog overall. i’ve been thinking about a few things that have likely contributed to me feeling overwhelmed here, and i need to sit down and drop old drafts/asks, clean up my followers list, and set a lil boundary. hopefully after i do, i can get back to writing and bugging y’all at a normal pace 💜
#or a normal pace for me asdfg#i just kinda? felt sick at the idea of coming online tonight#and that feeling passed but it made me go “oh i need to really do something about this huh”#and it’s not anything serious i think it’s more so understanding the way i am and what makes me anxious or overwhelmed and accepting that#rather than forcing myself to try and work past those feelings bc i want to make things easier for others#or bc i feel bad for letting go of things i don’t have muse for anymore#anyway anyway! i’m gonna finish my silly lil scary movie and hopefully have an early night#tbh the lack of sleep probably didn’t help my feelings today either :’ )#please take care of yourselves and remember to take breaks 💜💜💜 mwah mwah!!#get ready to ramble | ooc

I love me some unhinged bassists, they are awesome. But like III is all fun and silly while Amos is just out there barefooting every single show since forever.
Also yes II is our tiny king of the drums for a good reason but if you like his playing i'm begging you to check out TesseracT and pay good attention to Mr. Postones because he does such effortlessly cool shit all the time. (also gorgeous gorgeous transparent drumkit)
Unprocessed is just simply fucking awesome give them a listen as well. Won't regret it i promise.

Crafting update! - still making slow progress on the crocheted lovey - another scrappy baby quilt with beach quilt leftovers (almost done sewing the four patch blocks, then another round of ironing before I arrange all the blocks) - mini monster about half done (got distracted by baby quilt) - more embroidery! not sure what yet? probably a frog - braided scrap basket (no idea how big I want to make the basket's sides, but it's getting big enough I could consider it done pretty much whenever) - Bucky Bear is also making slow progress! - I got one of those like chests of tiny plastic drawers that people store bolts and screws and nails in from a yard sale and it was full of dirt and cobwebs, but I almost have it cleaned out! Once it's clean I think I'm going to fill it with buttons and claws and safety eyes If you have suggestions/requests for what I should make for Halloween month, please let me know! Any medium you've seen me make things in before, does not have to be sewing (but it can be!)
#the person behind the yarn#I meant to finish the four patches and make a solid dent in the next step for that quilt tonight#but the kidlet I used to babysit called!#we facetimed for more than an hour it was fabulous#at one point he put his tablet next to the phone so it could play cha cha slide so we could both dance to it#I haven't talked to him in so long I am so happy I got to talk to him!!!#subject change because I went back to the post then came back to the tags#I might make a little ghost quilt? almost definitely more ghost plushies#I'm trying to tackle my stash and get a bunch of fabric out of my stash into finished objects#also my dad's doing some volunteering for disaster relief locally#I would be too but there's like a 50/50 chance of if I can actually help or if I'll have a health flareup#and if I have a flareup my dad would also have to leave to take me home#so it's more helpful for me not to help. I have to keep telling myself that and I am not a fan#but! I can make baby blankets! and a lot of places are asking for baby blankets#so I will donate blankets and quilts#and once there start being fundraising auctions or raffles I'll make stuff for those too

[ID: a drawing in the Voltron Gravity Falls au, where Pidge and Matt take the place of Dipper and Mabel, drawn in approximately the style of Gravity Falls. The drawing is of Pidge and Matt in the backseat of a car. The seats are strewn with scribbled-on papers, their luggage, and fast food trash. Pidge is turned around in her seat and looking out the back of the car, while Matt has his foot on the headrest of the seat in front of him and playing a handheld video game. Sam's head is slightly visible in the corner of the foreground. End ID.]
an illustrated contribution to the gravity falls au: before the beginning, Pidge and Matt are on a trip to go stay with their "uncle" (a friend of their parents') Coran for the summer, because their parents are going alien hunting and also Pidge needs to leave the house more. With a setup like this, I'm sure Sam and Colleen are going to be the ones who encounter the most aliens!

You are so right in your distaste for Blades book 2. No matter how great things get near the end, a majority of the book was horrible. They led us along like mouse to cheese. It’s inexcusable to play with their audience this way.
I only wish more people were less willing to excuse PB’s mediocrity. The signs were on the wall for me when DLS was flat out better than Blades 2, and it’s narratively quite simple. The story told was well paced, thought out, and above all kept us waiting for more each week. I cannot say the same for B2. That is sad.
I mean I do understand why people still enjoyed it and were willing to overlook the negative aspects or didn’t have much of a problem with them to begin with. Blades 1 was a fan favorite, we all missed these characters a lot, and many people (myself included at one point) didn’t believe we would actually get book 2 because of all the bait and switches PB had done in the past. But the first two things are why I personally couldn’t overlook the glaring issues.
I can’t remember who the OP was now, but I remember seeing a post from when book 2 only had a few chapters out where someone said something about it seeming like the writers learned all the wrong things about what made the book so good, and I couldn’t agree with that person more! Yeah, book 1 was good because it was different from anything we had ever gotten before. But I think the main reason it was so good was because of the characters as individuals and the relationships we got to form with those individuals to ultimately become a family. Yet they didn’t really acknowledge those individuals or relationships in ways that did them justice for the majority of book 2. And on top of that, MC’s own characterization was inconsistent at times because the writers picked and chose when they wanted us to be a competent leader and when they wanted us to be virtually clueless for plot convenience.
Book 1 was also relatively straightforward whereas it seemed like the writers wanted to turn the sequel into their own personal commentary on religion, which is an incredibly complex topic in itself. They had some social commentary in book 1, but it was done a lot better in my opinion because it didn’t take so much of a front seat. They managed to make it clear that that commentary was important and relevant to the writers, the characters, and the readers living in the real world while never robbing book 1 of that fun adventure game used for escapism feel. Meanwhile, book 2 almost felt like ‘Rising Tides but make it religion’ at times. And that’s on top of all of the other issues I’ve already mentioned in my previous posts.
I will say that I can see how there’s usually a lot of pressure to blow things out of the water for a sequel to something so beloved, and that most likely contributed to how things played out. So maybe I’m being a bit too harsh in my judgement of everything. But I still find it very disappointing to wait so long for something just for it to be so messy and miss the mark by a mile
#choices bolas#choices blades#blades of light and shadow#choices stories you play#playchoices#I think the alcohol I had tonight is making me soft#bc there’s another side of me that agrees with you about how people should be less willing to excuse PB’s mediocrity#and that’s in general not just about Blades#but at the same time I’m like maybe I’m going too hard and need to chill 😂#so I’ll just say harsh but true#also about DLS I’m not VIP so I haven’t finished it yet#but I am still enjoying it#idk if I’d say it’s well paced#it’s definitely not as badly paced as Blades 2 but I think they are dragging it out a bit#to really capitalize on those sex scenes every chapter 😂#however as a lot of people have already pointed out DLS knows what it is bc the writers were actually self aware for once#which makes it enjoyable because we aren’t taking it too seriously and nor are the writers or the characters as an extension of them#so we can fuck around in the neighborhood (literally and figuratively) - get good dirt on everyone - and play detective on the side#and MC and the LI don’t act like self righteous little bitches#like people who are smarter than they actually are#or like they fell madly in love within the first 2 seconds of meeting#and the crazy thing is that the romance is fairly well written tbh#choices#choices app#choices ask

somehow, I don't know how, but somehow sewing machines always know when you're nearly done with a project and pick that exact moment to throw a hissy fit
#sewing#sewing machines#I am so close to finishing this dumb swimsuit that I started in 2020 for a vacation that ended up not happening#and which I stuffed into a shoebox and into the back of my sewing stash when I realized I wouldn't get to wear it in 2020#then pulled it back out to finish for this family gathering coming up in a few days here#it's a one-piece suit and I hate one-piece swimsuits#and no one-piece has fit me off the rack since puberty so I'm stuck sewing it for myself#but I'm very happy with the design and relatively happy with the finished look#the idea is just to have something that is supportive and modest enough to wear around family#and in particular to wear to something like a waterpark with my nephews#something that won't ride up or fall down or come untied or anything like that#so it has a low-cut leg hole and a high-cut neck#and an entire invisible superstructure in the lining underneath to actually provide support and enclosure and all#it's plain black but it fits and supports and won't fly apart at the seams#but this very last step. oh this last step.#I had to drape the exterior bust area directly on me bc I can't account for curves and stretch and such if it's flat on the table#and then I had to wiggle out of it carefully with a ton of pins in the underarm and neckline area#I'm using a double-needle to top stitch the edges as a finish across the whole suit. it did one underarm and the neckline just fine!#but the turn from where the neckline meets the strap and down into the other underarm it just. won't do it.#it has thrown a fit and created a tangle of thread multiple times now. there are only 4" left to sew! just sew it!#it's not hard! we just did the exact same thing on the other side and it worked fine! but no! gotta throw a hissy fit!#ugh. anyway. I have removed all the thread and needles from the machine and turned it off and basically sent it to timeout lol#wrote this rant and gonna make myself some food and I'll fucking finish those last 4 inches later tonight or tomorrow#and then I have one tiny repair to something else I want to take on this trip. hopefully my sewing machine won't throw a fit over that too#istg the only projects this doesn't happen with are the ones that end with a bunch of handsewing#that's the way to trick my sewing machine I guess. but I'm not handsewing a swimsuit lol#at least I'm not so pressed for time that I can't just walk away from it for a bit. getting close to time to pack but not quite yet#my sewing#2024 mood#tagtalking
