guys you can try to convince me of this movie's potential merits all you want but i need you to keep in mind that you're talking to someone who has consumed literally every piece of non-game zelda media ever released. any comic or film or show you want to cite as a good adaptation they've done before i have read or watched. i made a two hour video about it. i know exactly what their past attempts at adaptation have looked like. i have seen both the best and the absolute worst nintendo has to offer. and i truly think there is no way we get a good movie out of this

Hi Shark. I was wondering if I could be cheeky and request something from you. I was wondering if you could release a headcanon for Heaven with a list of fun facts about her (i.e. fave food, color, animal, vacation spot, book, song, drink...if she went to university what d'you think she'd study that kind of thing). She's just so interesting that I'd like to know more about her. Also, I read a fic she was mentioned in the other day and I thought you'd be interested. It was just a mention but I thought it was cool. Also, I can't wait for The woods whisper part 2. I'm on edge.
Hi sweet anon, thank you so much for your wonderful ask! As for the fic, please do send me the link. I probably have it in my reading list if the mutual has tagged me but I reckon I need to catch up with a lot of things. I've been feeling quite tired lately and I’m starting a new job as a bartender so it's quite tiring. I’m delighted you find the murderous angel interesting so here we go. 🖤

♢ Her favorite animals are hyenas. She dreams about owning one?? She’s weird asf I know.
♢ I personally imagine her voice like the singer of Sohodolls (by the way, this song from the group is her main theme song)
♢ Surprisingly enough her favorite color is not white, but red and gold.
♢ She's multilingual and speaks: French, Russian, German, and English all fluently.
♢ She's 25 at the beginning of HYE, even if throughout her life people struggle to give her an age since she has this very woman-child aspect.
♢ Her style is quite modern for the era. When she doesn’t wear elegant and revealing dresses with gold jewels, capes or fur coats, she loves stealing one of Arthur’s shirts and tuck it in her skirt. Similarly, he had to buy a second coat ‘cause she had stolen his. Most of the time she either dresses like a goddess or a forest nymph.
♢ She loves fun fairs and circuses! When they started flirting together and meeting at church every night, Arthur sometimes brought her candied apples.
♢ She might be an enchanting singer and she might love music but she's awful at playing an instrument. She tried piano, guitar, harp, and violin but she was terrible at all of them.
♢ She has empathy issues she hides quite well. Now, I’m not saying she has 0 Empathy but she lacks of it most of the time except with Arthur or on a few occasions. It leads her to be cold and sardonic with people outside of her private circle when she doesn’t “mask”.
♢ Did someone said “lemon pie”? She’d kill for lemon pies. It’s her favorite dessert of all time.
♢ Her Birthday is the 22 January.
♢ She's fond of myths, legends, and fairy tales. If she had to pick one tale and one myth she would go for the Red Little Riding Hood and the Beast of Gevaudan. But her favorite story is Alice’s Adventures.
♢ She's a "mama bear", which means she doesn't lose her temper easily despite being gifted with an ability for extreme violence but touch her husband, kids or family and she'll go f e r a l.
♢ She talked several times with Linda at church, unknowing Heaven was already fucking her husband (and she enjoyed it). I know, that's a dick move.

*most of the hc above still works for her modern!self
♢ Her favorite book is The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris.
♢ She works as an exotic pole dancer and aerial performer. Considering this, she also masters aerial hoop, silks, and Chinese pole.
♢ She is currently applying to study forensic medicine after several years of gaps.
♢ She has spent years locked up in a mental institute, in the dangerous patients ward.
♢ Her favorite food is Japanese Udon soup with gyoza and Nikuman as side dishes.
♢ She loves listening to brutal music, such as metal, hard rock, or alternative trash/bimbo music even if her playlist is actually quite varied. You can go from Rammstein and Angerfist to Britney Spears and Lana Del Rey.
♢ She smokes weed.
♢ If she had to choose a drink it would be red wine for alcohol and pumpkin spice latte for sweet. But in truth, she’s that annoying gym girl so she mostly drinks water and homemade protein smoothies. She also loves boba milk teas.
♢ She's a huge fan of horror movies and games (especially FNAF), with a fascination for cannibalism. With that being said, she organizes the best girl nights ever, especially during Halloween.

Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction - This is probably my second-favorite R&C game, as it leads up to A Crack in Time. Still, I didn't find it quite as fun or compelling, story-wise.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Both of the Galaxy games were really good and really fun, though if I'm being honest they kind of blend together in my mind, and I can't remember what was in which game ^^' Was this the one where you could reverse gravity and walk on the ceiling? That was fun.
The Last Express - Aww, has nobody played this? :( It's a classic! A mystery on a train! Reminiscent of Murder on the Orient Express! Using time travel and set routines of the characters to figure out the mystery! A plethora of colorful characters who all have their own stories and suspicious motivations! A specimen of rarely-used rotoscoping for animation in a video game! Made by the guy who made the original Prince of Persia! I thought it was fun, anyway.
Reading Blaster 2000 - This is one of my main childhood favorites <3 Set in the same universe as the Math Blaster games, but about reading instead of numbers...I mean, what's not to like? You play in a competition to see...who's the best reader, I guess? You have to complete various challenges that test your reading abilities, whether that's a matching puzzle, following clues, or even making a commercial that you'll get to watch later on in the game. Ike and Rita, the two-headed host of the show, have so many memorable lines that my siblings and I still quote to this day, like "It's exciting...aaaaaand educational!" ^_^ Best of all, at the end of each competition, you unlock a chapter of a choose-your-own-adventure book featuring the main characters going on one kind of adventure or another. The "dun-dun-DUNNNN!!!!" sound that would play when it said "To Be Continued" used to terrify me, though XD
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - What a fun game! I have to admit, I went in with low expectations because I was underwhelmed by Twilight Princess, but I ended up pleasantly surprised both by how fun and colorful it was, and even by how challenging some parts ended up being. Some things were still a little too weird for me (*cough*Ooccoo*cough*), and I would still rather have gotten around on horseback than on a huge pelican-lookin' bird, but overall it was an enjoyable experience. Especially because the MotionPlus allowed for such better motion-sensing, so it really felt cool to swing the sword around. Also, the final battle against Demise is probably the most epic battle in the whole franchise <3
The Witch's House - Whoa, I'm surprised anybody else has played this! It's an RPG Maker puzzle/horror game where you play as a girl who ventures into a witch's house in the middle of the forest and has to try to make it out alive. You might not think that a pixellated RPG Maker game could be that scary, but it actually was! There were several times I felt the hair rising on the back of my neck and my heart pounding. It's a very atmospheric game. It also had a compelling story that slowly unfolds as you go deeper and deeper into the house.
Xenogears - Huh, I didn't expect this one to win! It's not really unknown or anything, but I don't generally come across people who've played it, even if they're fans of JRPGs. Xenogears is such a mixed bag for me. The first disc was really good (with the usual caveats of mid-90s JRPG nonsense XD), with a compelling story full of twists and characters I really liked (I especially liked Fei's particular brand of angst, because it reminded me of a character of mine I was writing at the time), beautiful graphics, and gorgeous music by Yasunori Mitsuda. But then the second disc just kind of dissolved into barely-intelligible complications and really lazy shortcuts like the developers had run out of time or money. On top of that, the anti-Christian sentiment that is unfortunately common in a lot of Japanese storytelling became more noxious than just about any other game I've played, and I lost patience with it, using cheats just so I could see how things ended :/
Warcraft 3 - Actually the only Warcraft game I've played ^^' I adored this game back in the day, and still quite like it. Sure, you can say it's derivative of LotR and Warhammer. No, I don't like what they did with Arthas' character or how no one is allowed to be very happy for very long because you have to keep on having wars or there's no franchise anymore. But there's just something I really like about the setting, the feel of Azeroth. The art style is fun, the music is great, and the developers have a delightful sense of humor that's present throughout the game. Also, I played this game right at the peak of my LotR fandom, while the movies were still coming out, so to me what they did with the Orcs was completely revolutionary. I was astonished when I realized that Thrall was my favorite character, when normally I would think of Orcs as being 100% evil and gross. And, while I can't say they're high literature or anything, I really like all of the tie-in novels I've read, especially Lord of the Clans.

Bookbinding Fanfiction: A New Adventure Begins
and thus I rise from the dead (with no new fics of my own making though).  Anyway, I'm gonna talk a bit about my process binding Salvage by @muffinlance. Thanks @necrotic-bones for (unknowingly) inspiring me to get into this (they were to first to ask to fanbind Salvage and I wanted to do it as well)
Before I begin, here are the guides/tutorials that I used:
- How To Make A Book From An AO3 Page by @armoredsuperheavy
- Bookbinding Resources Master List by members of the Renegade Bindery discord server (found through the previous guide)
- r/bookbinding has a nice beginner’s introduction to bookbinding
- the Case Bound Book series by DAS Bookbinding on youtube is very helpful as well, I specifically used Part 6 Casing In
I also found this amazing program, called Bookbinder (on quantumelephant.co.uk), that takes your pdf and formats it into proper signatures and flips every second page for you etc, so that you can print it at home (if you have the proper printer for it)
this post is probably going to be kind of long, so the entire thing is under the cut, but here’s a preview:
Tumblr media
Anyway, I think it's been close to over two weeks since the start of my bookbinding projects, but they’re both done! I first did a kind of test run with a collection of detroit become human fanfics, which taught me four things:
- don't forget to choose natural white paper at the print shop (books never use pure white paper)
- the edges will be irregular and that is ok, do under no circumstances try to level them by hand as you will definitely not succeed in getting smooth edges, just leave the signatures as they are, trust me
- thin endpapers are horrible to smoothly glue down, so take some paper that's a bit thicker and it'll be easier
- finish watching a tutorial before doing the thing, eg. I forgot to put extra paper between the endpapers and the first two and last two pages of the DBH collection got a bit of a wave now, oh well
I might make another post properly detailing my first fanbinding journey with the DBH fics, but second things first: Salvage
Chapter 1: The Beginning
I did dip my toes into bookbinding a few years back, but did them japanese style with an open spine, so doing a proper case bookbind with a spine and all was new to me, ArmoredSuperHeavy’s guide helped a lot
Chapter 2: Getting Materials
Step 1: Read both guides mentioned above, then go to the city to find what you need, don't really find what you need, order a bunch of shit instead
Step 2: Only partially read through the bookbinding guide and forget to order half the stuff you need, try to make do with what you have (big mistake)
Step 3: Try to make bookcloth yourself with this guide, don’t follow it properly and fail at making it, find out that buying bookcloth is dirt cheap (comparatively)
Step 4: regret buying all that cloth and unnecessarily expensive thin paper for the backing
Step 4: buy cheap bookcloth while sighing through the pain of being inconvenienced by your own stupidity, patiently wait for all of your stuff to arrive
Step 5: harvest and format your choosen works according to @armoredsuperheavy‘s guide, run it through the bookbinder program
Step 6: let a website print your script for you since your printer is barely good enough to print one (1) page if you’re lucky, let alone 64 (DBH) or flippin’ 103 (Salvage), front and back
Step 7: wait some more
Chapter 3: Binding the Book
Now sadly I barely took any pictures (read: none), except for the finished product, so I wont go into too much detail, I’ll mostly talk about my thoughts behind choosing the colors and design with a slight detour into the layout and formatting of the fic
Tumblr media
The Design:
I knew that I wanted the book to be blue (since Salvage takes place at sea) and that I wanted to find some paper that had some kind of blue wave design on it, I went on ollilypaperware and found this really nice chiyogami paper with a blue wave/scale design on it:
I wanted the round parts to point upwards, but I got it all turned around while glueing it down and now they point downwards instead, but thats fine
I wanted the spine to be blue as well, but when I looked at my red bookcloth (I ordered a few different colors since shipping was a bit expensive and I wanted to get my money’s worth) and thought “red like fire, oh OH that would look fucking awesome and reflect the content of the fic much better”, so I used that instead, I also bought some blue, purple and yellow ribbons in the city and used the blue one for a bookmark by gluing it into the spine
Because of that I made a kind of template, I used Baskerville Old Face for the body, Garamond for the front matter (AO3 tags, summary etc) and Bodoni MT for the front title and chapter titles
The Formatting:
Now I did format a few works before ordering the materials, the materials were getting quite expensive and I wanted to make sure that I had more than just one fic I wanted to bind, I made a whole list and all
I pretty much just followed SuperArmoredHeavy’s guide on how to harvest and format AO3 fics and my layout is the same, meaning the first page is just the title, then title and author in bigger font with the AO3 tags and the summary on the back, then the fic and lastly the author’s notes in an appendix
Chapter 4: The Finished Book
My trial run was a great success in terms of learning what to do and what not to, which means that my Salvage fanbind is the best it could be (except for the endpaper at the back, which I slightly failed at gluing down smoothly, but its behind two empty pages and at the end of the book, so I dont really mind, no one will see)
I’m incredibly happy with the finish and hope that the exterior does the interior justice, but without much further ado, here are the promised pictures:

Char’s Return (1988)
Tumblr media
Literal months ago, I thought to myself, you know, I probably can’t read Japanese now, but I might be able to someday, so I may as well pick up some old-ass books while I can. And it turns out that with the gracious assistance of Google-sensei and the willingness to sink most of my free time into choking on kanji... I can eventually kind of read! I’ll admit, I was positively giddy when I realized that I didn’t have to consciously process the characters that make up the phrase “people whose souls are held back by gravity” anymore.
This is Char’s Return, a gamebook published by Keibunsha in 1988 that mixes elements of a single-player RPG and a “Choose Your Own Adventure” story. You’re Char, trying to organize scattered Neo Zeon remnants into something approximating a fighting force. Along the way, you pick up a lady friend who dies tragically because duh, fight former allies, and build the determination necessary to (Marvin the Martian voice) blow up the Earth.
I haven’t properly played the game, but I did try to build a tree representing every possible path, so what follows below the cut is a general summary of what happens.
Setting
The prologue starts in May, UC 0090. The world is more or less as it was at the end of ZZ, with the remains of Axis, Core 3, and Mousa forming a shoal zone in Side 3. According to the book, over the next few years, gravity naturally pulls Axis to L1 between the Earth and moon.
Texas has been hastily repurposed as a refugee colony, but the Federation hasn’t done much to actually repair it, resulting in appalling living conditions. Sweetwater is located somewhere between Sides 2 and 5 at L4, and Fifth Luna is stationed nearby as a resource satellite.
Londo Bell exists, with Nahel Argama as its flagship and many former AEUG members in its ranks. Char claims to recognize most of the bridge crew when he visits on one route during the game’s second half. Radical members who opposed reintegration with the Federation have formed their own organization, AEGM (I’ve also seen this romanized as EGUM), which you’d remember from Char’s Counterattack if they’d animated the first half of Hi-Streamer.
Characters
Char Aznable: The player assumes the role of Char, who tried to step aside after the Gryps War but was dispirited after witnessing the further tragedies of the subsequent conflict. Sensing no hope of change, Char chose to return to action and cleanse the Earth.
Danjidan Poseidon: The leader of a group of Neo Zeon remnants aboard the Gwadan-class cruiser Inxs hiding in the Side 3 shoal zone. Poseidon is an old one-eyed soldier who once fought alongside Ramba Ral and is as tenacious as he is stubborn. He pilots a Zaku III.
Leonhardt Lang: A former subordinate of Poseidon who is hiding in Hong Kong. Char arranges a meeting with him to learn Poseidon’s whereabouts.
Kai Shiden: Still a journalist whose self-appointed mission is exposing corruption within the Federation.
Stephanie Luio: Daugher of Woomin Luio and chief representative of Luio Company. Recognizes Char from the Dakar Speech she saw on TV.
Godarl: AEGM’s collaborator within Luio Company.
Yuka Kazama: AEGM’s contact person who is introduced by Godarl in Hong Kong. Yuka was born on the moon but moved to Musashino, Japan when she was young. She has vivid, painful memories of the colony drop and lost most of her family during the One Year War; now, she is around 18-19. Yuka has strong intuition that she can’t explain well, leading Char to suspect that she is a Newtype.
Yuma Kazama: Yuka’s younger sister. They became separated during the Gryps War and she reappears as an enhanced human piloting the Newtype-use mobile suit Nocturne. Her personality has become twisted as a result, and she lashes out against Yuka for trying to reconnect and against Char for “dropping the sky” during the OYW.
Aborigeni Stromatolite: Leader of AEGM’s cell in Mitaka, Japan, who accepts the mission of getting Char back into space.
Bright Noah: Captain of the Nahel Argama. He doesn’t believe that Londo Bell is serving corrupt interests, but is unable to convince Char.
Jay Nicholson: One of Poseidon’s ace pilots. He flies a Dreissen and is a veteran who takes every battle seriously.
Sakata: One of Poseidon’s ace pilots. He flies a prototype Geara Doga. While he opens with a surprise attack, once he addresses Char directly, he is extremely polite and fights gallantly.
Edo: One of Poseidon’s ace pilots. He flies a ReGelg. He’s been a pilot since he was in junior high, as the Principality of Zeon mobilized students near the end of the OYW.
Canning: Inxs bridge operator.
Mechanics
MSN-100S Hyaku Shiki Kai: Carries no melee weapon, even though its Z-MSV equivalent is armed with a beam saber.
RMS-099 Rick Dias
RGM-86R GM III
ORX-005 Gaplant
RGM-89 Jegan
AMX-011 Zaku III
MS-14J ReGelg
AMX-009 Dreissen
AMX-017 Qubeley Mass Production Type: Same appearance and equipment as the AMX-004G that appears in ZZ. The one on the Inxs was found among debris and repaired, but will only boot up if the player acquires a card key before the final battle.
AMX-117X Prototype Geara Doga: Described by Char as an odd mish-mash when it appears as an enemy.
HMX-000-X3 Nocturne: A Newtype-use MS developed by the Titans near the end of the Gryps War using psycommu technology from Axis. Its size, appearance, and equipment are very similar to the Queen Mansa. It is also equipped with a deflection shield which reduces damage done by low-level beam weapons.
FF-S3 Saberfish
Dodai Kai
Nahel Argama
Gwadan-class Inxs
Garuda-class Audhumla
Story
Hong Kong
Having witnessed various tragedies since the One Year War, Char senses no hope of the Federation changing its ways. Tired of waiting, he intends to take action himself. He takes a shuttle to Hong Kong to meet Leonhardt Lang, who can connect him to Danjidan Poseidon’s Neo Zeon remnants. However, he immediately finds himself being tailed.
Char is given opportunities to fight or flee, as his pursuers have no problem using their handguns even in streets crowded with pedestrians. However, whenever he apprehends one of them, they choose to kill themselves with cyanide capsules rather than divulge any useful information. Eventually, the pursuit ends and Char acquires an elecar.
However, when he drives to the convenience store where Leonhardt is waiting, a bomb explodes and destroys the shop. Char survives unscathed, but Leonhardt is beyond saving. With his dying breath, he tells Char to meet with their collaborator at Luio Company.
His next order of business is to determine the location of its headquarters. There are several routes to this information, one of which is stumbling into a seedy bar and running into Kai Shiden. When Char gets to Luio, his secretive demeanor and bizarre request result in security taking him to the back for a little working over... unless you found a letter of introduction while asking around. (This fight is designed to be unwinnable, anyway, so if you follow the “I win” path, the book scolds you for lying and sends you back to start.)
He eventually meets with Stephanie Luio and Godarl. Godarl hears about Char’s pursuers and notes that “Hunters,” private organizations chasing down Zeon remnants, have recently grown bolder now that they’re receiving direct support from some Federation officers. He also introduces Char to Yuka, who will help them make contact with AEGM in Japan.
They head to a base where Luio has prepared a Saberfish for them, but they are attacked by a Hyaku Shiki Kai. Char has the option of immediately boarding the plane and fighting back, or searching the base for something he can use to temporarily disable the Kai and buy himself more time. Once he is clear to take off and Yuka successfully boards, they dodge the Kai’s attacks until they’re out of its range.
Japan
Because Narita is under EFF administration, Char sets a course for the civilian airfield in Chofu. As he observes the nation from the sky, he notes that Japan’s position as a leader in technology and industry made it a target during the OYW and its coastal cities suffered massive damage during Operation British. Depending on how much damage the plane received from the Hyaku Shiki Kai, they either land safely or crash in Tokyo Bay, where an AEGM patrol boat picks them up.
At the hideout in Mitaka, Char meets Aborigeni Stromatolite, who pledges his organization’s full cooperation in returning him to space. In two days, the Audhumla is scheduled to land at the Federation’s Chiba City base. After it unloads its cargo, they plan to hijack it before its return flight, expecting to be able to seize a shuttle they can launch from high altitude. In between meetings and mission prep, Char finds the time to relieve Yuka of her virginity.
The mission immediately goes sideways. Although they pretend to be a transport company, their forged documents don’t pass muster at the front gate and they have to switch to Plan B, which is to just force their way through. The speed of their assault catches most of the EFF soldiers off guard, but one alert pilot chases them inside the Audhumla’s cargo bay with a GM III.
Char boards one of the MS inside the Audhumla and fights back as the plane takes off. Both suits are constrained by their battlefield, and Char eventually triumphs. AEGM’s crew prepare the shuttle and Char says his goodbyes to Yuka, who gives him a photo of her family and predicts her imminent doom.
Before they can launch the shuttle, a new threat appears -- the Nocturne, a Newtype-use MS using Titan and Axis technology. He tries to hold it off while AEGM prepares the shuttle for launch, but Yuka suddenly gets between him and his opponent because she recognizes the pilot as her missing sister, Yuma. Char surmises that Yuma is the source of the unpleasant pressure they’ve been feeling.
No matter what action Char takes from here, Yuka is unable to overcome Yuma’s rewritten memories and twisted personality. Her fatal premonition from earlier comes true -- Yuma kills her older sister and turns her attention to Char, who barely escapes on the shuttle.
Side 3
When the shuttle reaches a point about halfway between L1 and the moon, they’re intercepted by the Nahel Argama. From here, there are three distinct routes that Char can take:
Flee immediately to Granada. This involves going through the Nahel Argama, so first they get close enough to render its big guns useless. Then, Char takes one of the MS from the Audhumla and fights off Londo Bell’s new Jegan. After breaking through, they proceed to Side 3 via Granada.
Flee immediately to Side 4. On this route, Char visits Texas Colony and observes the deplorable living conditions of the refugees there. A Federation official asks him if he’ll ferry some of them to Granada, which Char can choose to do on their way to Side 3.
When they’re first hailed by the Nahel Argama, Char confirms that Bright Noah is the one speaking and arranges a meeting onboard. However, Char hot-headedly denounces Londo Bell as tools of the corrupt Federation and talks break down. He unleashes sleeping gas on the bridge, steals a mobile suit from the Nahel Argama’s hanger, and physically breaks the hatch to escape the ship. The shuttle then goes straight to Side 3.
Once they’re within visual range of Mousa’s ruins, they spot the Inxs and meet Danjidan Poseidon on the bridge. He’s not convinced that Char is who he says he is, so Char tries to sweeten the pot by dangling Mineva Zabi as bait -- he says he’s protecting her and intends to restore her to leadership when the time is right.
Ultimately, though, Poseidon doesn’t care about Char’s true identity, but only about his abilities. He suggests a game: Char is given six hours to navigate through nearby space and pass through three checkpoints. The game space is represented as a rectangular grid made up of blocks A1-A4 on the top row and B1-B4 on the bottom. From A1 or B1, Char must reach B4 in six hours or less. Each move, including the first, takes one hour. Furthermore, some blocks have events that burn another hour.
The three checkpoints are MS battles against one of Poseidon’s aces: Nicholson in a Driessen, Sakata in a Geara Doga, and Edo in a ReGelg. Three blocks contain traps which can further damage Char’s MS, which cannot be repaired during the game. Two blocks have items. After successfully winning his three battles and reaching B4, Char battles Poseidon’s Zaku III. The Zaku III’s specs make the fight a difficult one, but Char ekes out a victory after both units trade serious blows.
The Final Battle
As soon as the game ends and Poseidon is satisfied with Char’s strength and leadership, the Nocturne attacks. Char struggles to keep both himself and Poseidon alive as they withdraw to the Inxs, but once there, they realize the ship probably isn’t capable of fighting it off. Poseidon takes off again in his battered Zaku III despite Char’s protests. While Poseidon alarms Yuma with his tenacity and ferocious fighting style, she eventually overwhelms him with funnels.
At this point, the Nahel Argama appears. It launches its mobile suits and Char is left to rally the despondent Inxs crew. After surviving an early salvo, Char leads the MS team in a successful defense of the bridge, but Nicholson, Sakata, and Edo are all killed in action. Nahel Argama switches to long-range attacks, and Char throws down the gauntlet, declaring that he’s buried his AEUG past.
During the exchange, Inxs takes severe damage and its main guns almost overload to the point of self-destruction. But in a stroke of fortune, one shot takes out the Nahel Argama’s Hyper Mega Particle Gun. This also knocks out the adjacent MS catapults and reduces the Nahel Argama's combat capability by 80%, forcing Bright to order a retreat to Amman City.
Yuma renews her assault, leading to a final showdown with Char. Char intends to kill Yuma for everything she’s done, but Yuka’s spirit begs him to forgive her, saying she’s not really to blame. Char is eventually talked down and wins the battle, which relieves Yuma of her mental chains and removes all the tension from her body and soul. Char cradles her body and pounds his console, vowing to punish the people who keep repeating these tragedies.
The epilogue takes place three years later. Yuma remains in a mental facility and Char’s bad memories of the incident are dredged up when Nanai uses the phrase “enhanced human” to introduce Gyunei. Later that night, he tells her a bit about what happened and also that he gave psycommu technology to the team building the Nu Gundam so he can have a proper showdown with Amuro. Nanai is saddened that there’s still so much he’s keeping from her, but Char attempts to reassure her by saying that right now it’s her strength that he needs.
In the final scene, Char addresses Neo Zeon troops in Sweetwater and declares that humanity must never again fight another war, and to realize this, he will punish the people on Earth who are at the root of it all.
So there you have it!
My vocabulary flash cards have now become oddly domain-specific and I’ve gotten better at figuring out how and why Google Translate fails. I can’t claim to be literate, but I was definitely reading faster the farther I got into the book. It’s almost like consistent, focused practice is good.
I bought more books when it became clear that I was going to get through this one, but no promises how long it’ll be until I have another summary :)

LGBT Quick Reads
In no particular order. These are novellas, short stories, Choose Your Own Adventure books and comics I've read and enjoyed.
1. The Labyrinth's Archivist by Day Al-Mohamed: f/f fantasy (novella). This is my favourite novella. The protagonist is a blind queer woman of colour and the worldbuilding is amazing.
2. The Faerie Hounds of York by Arden Powell: m/m fantasy (novella). The author tells an intriguing story involving faerie rings. The love interest is Romani.
3. Spear by Nicola Griffith: f/f fantasy with some m/m/f (novella). A woman dressed as a man wants to join King Arthur's Companions. I like that this is a retelling that follows one of the knights rather than the royals.
4. Small Gods of Calamity by Sam Kyung Yoo: fantasy with a bisexual, asexual male protagonist + no romance (novella). This is my favourite Asian American story. It takes place in Seoul and most characters are Korean, but there's also a Japanese one and a Chinese one.
5. Burning Roses by SL Huang: f/f fantasy + a trans woman major character (novella). This wonderful novella mixes Western fairy tales and Eastern mythology.
6. Spells, Snow & Sky by Coffee Quills: f/f/f fantasy (novella). I enjoy polyamory representation. One of the love interests is a yokai (Japanese spirit).
7. Worm in a Jar by B. Pigeon: f/nb fantasy (novella). This sweet story has a casual, everyday vibe to it.
8. The Old Guard written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernández: m/m fantasy with some f/f (comics + Netflix movie). Who doesn't like a story about queer immortals? No risk of Bury Your Gays.
9. Bright World written and illustrated by Stan Stanley: fantasy with a non-binary protagonist (webcomics + paperback). This is my favourite comics. I love the Latinx worldbuilding and the colourful art.
10. Scholars and Sorcery by Eleanor Beresford: f/f fantasy (novellas). This short series is super sweet. It's mostly about life at a magic school. For more HP-like LGBT books, check out my rec list.
11. When the Letter Comes by Sara Fox: fantasy with a trans girl protagonist (short story). This is another HP-like LGBT story. It's a little sad at first, but it gets better. You can read it legally and for free here.
12. DIY by John Wiswell: queerplatonic m/nb fantasy (short story). This is another HP-like LGBT story. It's about climate change and capitalism and also has disability representation. You can read it legally and for free here.
13. Brooms written by Jasmine Walls and illustrated by Teo DuVall: fantasy with some f/f + a trans woman major character (graphic novel). A group of diverse women take part in unsanctioned team broom races.
14. Into the Tower by Hari Conner: fantasy with a bigender lover or no romance (Choose Your Own Adventure book). You can play 4 possible characters or even create your own. A full game lasts between 1 and 2 hours... or you can die after just 10 minutes.
15. The Stone Wētā by Octavia Cade: science fiction with a trans woman major character (novella). This is cli-fi where an international network of scientists have to secretly preserve climate data from their governments.
16. Mossa & Pleiti by Malka Older: f/f murder mystery/science fiction (novellas). A detective and a scholar investigate disappearances on Jupiter's platforms.
17. Glorious Day by Skye Kilaen: f/f science fiction (novella). It's an excellent bodyguard/princess novella, with a rebellion in the background. The princess is blind.
18. You Are Asexual by AC Evermore: science fiction with an asexual protagonist (Choose Your Own Adventure book). It's a very fast read, I was dead in 10 minutes. XD But all the hints definitely made me want to explore the other options and there were some brilliant surprises.
19. Ana on the Edge by AJ Sass: sports with a non-binary protagonist (MG). The story follows a young figure-skating champion questioning her gender identity.
20. Fence written by CS Pacat and illustrated by Johanna the Mad: m/m sports (comics + spin-off novels by Sarah Rees Brennan). This one is about a fencing club and is inspired by many sports anime.
21. Cheer Up: Love and Pompoms written by Crystal Frasier and illustrated by Val Wise: f/f sports with a trans girl love interest (comics). This is a very cute friends-to-lovers story between two cheerleaders.
22. [Spanish] Enamorada written and illustrated by Clara Cortés: f/f romance (graphic novel). This is an adorable high school love story between two good students.
23. Billions of Beautiful Hearts by Kevin Craig: nb/nb romance (short story). If you don't mind reading Covid lockdown stories, this one is very cute.
24. Boys Run the Riot by Gaku Keito: contemporary fiction with a trans boy protagonist and a non-binary major character (manga series). A group of high-schoolers create a streetwear brand in this interesting slice-of-life series.
25. The Christmas Chevalier by Meg Mardell: historical fiction with a trans man protagonist (novella). This is a lovely story, with a Christmas masquerade.

You couldn’t count the days you have roamed Teyvat, it has been too long since then. For 60 years (it was 60 years, wasn’t it? You don’t remember anymore), you have not crossed any country’s border, only listening to their seemingly endless musings. You have never been out in the sea, tensity and uneasiness forming in the pit of your stomach whenever so. However, being isolated from the land the gods rule upon, has earned you a title. Your name is being whispered as a warning or a legend like a scripture formed with the wind. Some were afraid of you, while some respected you. It was pathetic, really, how desperate these people were compared to those in Yokohama. There was no point in dwelling in the past, now, was there? Despite receiving unwanted attention by passersby, you paid no attention to those who whispered your name like a mantra, spouting vile, vulgar assumptions about you. You realized-- quickly-- that they only think for themselves, not for the benefit of others. Wouldn’t that be the source of their demise? Well, you don’t linger on trivial topics for too long, it’s only fair for you to care only about yourself in a world you don’t belong in (you know you belong here now, yet you felt as if Elysian was better than this place they call home).
You have heard of the outlander who caught the wind, saving a foreign nation he seemed to have been in once, only, and you have let the news flow from one ear to another. Who were you to care? No one should catch your attention in a world full of insatiable people. Each step made the grass crunch, making your way to the foot of Dragonspine. Chuuya followed suit, and he settled himself on your head. You figured out that he could shapeshift, probably his punishment as well, yet so far, he has only shifted into a bird and a wisp. His wisp form wasn’t as elegant as you may think, a small, hooded figure encased in smoke-colored clothing, resembling the coat he used to wear. On top, there was a small black X-shaped symbol in the middle of his chest. Around his small form were orange particles, that remind you vividly of Chuuya's ability. A little hat, one you were familiar with, was situated on top of his small head. It was the hat he was wearing during his time as a mafioso, you deduced as such. The tiny creature lets out small squeaks of content, nuzzling itself on your head; seems like he thought it was a good pillow. A chuckle of amusement escapes your lips, turning your head around to watch the scenery in front of you. Dragonspine was one of your favorite places to visit during your free time, snow piling on top of another, making the white mountain as beautiful as it is. However, you do not venture into Dragonspine, not wanting to risk your life for creatures who seem to always take your time.
As much as you hate to admit it, you have most likely killed more hilichurls than you ever killed back in Yokohama. The songs of relentless, snow-covered winds never fail to make your unease and worry falter, even for a moment. The glacial scenery of the mountain attracted your attention, especially your first visit here. A few snowflakes settled themselves on your face, melting due to the heat emitting from your body. If you had the chance, should you tell your friends about the scenery, they would love it too, wouldn't they? You know they would, however, how would you know so? They’re gone, and so is your attachment to anything but Chuuya. “Do you like the scenery, Chuchu?” soft taps on your head were his response, indicating that he was displeased with the nickname you gave him. He agreed nonetheless, sitting on the palm of your hand. He squirmed, looking for a more comfortable position, and stilled after a while.
Memories of the past have always plagued your mind, reminding you that you were alone, again. Despite the copious memories you have stored away, none will bring you back to the place you have regarded as your home. For once, you have felt safe, all the while knowing death follows you wherever you go. Death was the dark, hollow cloak you wore while walking the path of dread in your past life, hands coated with the blood of another, and your eyes held the burden you were forced to carry until the day you died. The amount of blood was enough to shatter the dreams children told you to believe in, you were holding on the thinnest thread, one soaked with blood, your blood, reminding you how much you have suffered and how you made others weak, on their knees, while keeping a straight face as you watch the life draining from their faces. You have learned that life was unfair, gods turning a blind eye to the generation you were put in, leading the people to be self-reliant, causing resentment and disrespect to be aimed at those who call themselves “gods”.
Did they even exist? You have heard, and read, tell of what the gods and goddesses have done to provide, to give, and to sacrifice. Did they give up? Were they satisfied with what they have gotten? Has their insatiable lust for approval and desire to fulfill their selfish, carnal desires quenched? Did they only long for what they have desired, using their power to prove themselves better among the world of mortals? Were they not the selfless, kind gods described in the books of old? Nevertheless, you had no respect for the divine. You only had yourself to depend on since the start. You controlled your own death, knowing that when you died, it was time. You could have stopped yourself from fading, though, but you were tired, you let it happen. And though you know that your death will be remembered, not in the history books, but in the Port Mafia, you will be forever remembered.
59 years have passed. There is no time to dwell in the past, all you have is the memories you swear to protect. Your fight with immortality has been futile, leaving you to bask in your own presence for 59 years. That is until Chuuya finally found you. And you? You found him. It wasn’t expected for you to know who he was, a mere spirit cursed by gods above to wander a world he was unfamiliar with. He was stripped of Arahabaki, leaving him with only his outermost ability, “For The Tainted Sorrow”. He didn’t mind, as well, Arahabaki resides within him, giving him a sense of dread, and leaving him with his identity that he can’t seem to solve. Arahabaki has forever stained him as blood stained your hands, giving him scars that will never leave him. In that life, and in the next. He had you, sweet, malevolent, outstanding you. Though he never voiced it out, he felt, well, complete, to say the least. And while feeling detached from not being completely human has affected him far too much, you were there to make him feel-- what did you make him feel, really? He can’t decipher his own feelings as his own identity. In all the years he has roamed this world as an insignificant wisp of the wind, he found himself tangled in another adventure with the “most insufferable partner aside from Dazai”.
Your footsteps were carried by the wind, walking to the City of Mondstadt, again, Chuuya on your shoulder, scanning the area for any enemies or the like. You were currently looking for food, choosing to shop in Mondstadt instead of catching wildlife. Each step has your coat moving from one side to another, boots making the grass crunch in every step. “Ne, Chuuya, do you want to buy pancakes from Mond?” you whispered, voice soft, only for Chuuya to hear. Said wisp only nods its small head, his little hood moving ever so slightly while he nods. Deciding that it would be best for him to rest, you put him in your breast pocket, his little head poking just a bit. Chuuya softly squeaked, nuzzling on the fabric, and opted to rest despite his unsaid protests. But before you could set foot onto the City Of Freedom, a high-pitched voice prevented you from doing so. “Hey!” they said, you whipped your head to the direction you heard it from, spotting a seemingly young-looking traveler, and a floating pixie-- wait.
Isn’t he the honorary knight? You thought to yourself, unconsciously cupping the pocket Chuuya resides in, feeling him squirm when he came in contact with your gloved palm. Instead of giving them a response, you simply stared at them, eyes glimmering with amusement. “Hi.” a simple, short greeting. Although you would prefer to ask the traveler some questions, that wouldn’t be necessary. You were able to decipher every detail easily, too easily, in fact. Aether, however, wasn’t fazed. He was well aware of how they described you, and how notorious you were due to appearance. Scoffing at the assumptions, he looked forward to meeting you. Perhaps he will look forward to his endeavors with you by his side, no? A star sent from Elysian would only brighten the mortal world, cursed with divine power and lonesome memories.
However, you did not know that a simple greeting exchanged on your first day of the meeting would bloom into something much more.
Ah, it seems that the show is starting once again, a different chapter, a different genre.

Was Ace Attorney made as a satire on Japan’s legal system? -- An analysis
I wouldn’t really call myself an Ace Attorney fan--I’ve never played any of the games, the closest I’ve come being watching other people’s let’s plays. I do like reading about the series on wikis and interacting with fan content for it, though, so I do know a fair amount about it.
One thing I see being said pretty often by fans is that the series was intended as a satire/parody of the Japanese legal system, which is why the courts are ridiculously biased towards the prosecution, prosecutors often care more about perfect win records more than putting actual guilty people behind bars, etc. If you’re familiar with this, you’ve probably heard of Japan’s 99% conviction rate. This interpretation of the games and the way they work definitely makes sense.
But after hearing this many times I eventually noticed something. There isn’t a single actual source (creator statement, interview, etc.) that backs up this claim. Every time I see someone online say “the series creator made Ace Attorney to parody Japan’s actual legal system” there is never a link to an interview or anything that proves their statement correct. If someone has an actual, verified source from Shu Takumi or someone else who had significant involvement with the series, please prove me wrong and show it to me. But according to all of the creator’s statement’s I’ve read, there’s no evidence of the series being an intentional parody.
So, what do we know about the creation of the Ace Attorney series? Well, it was created by Shu Takumi, who wrote and directed the first three games. After working on the dinosaur survival horror game Dino Crisis for Capcom, he was given the opportunity to make any kind of game he wanted. He really wanted to make mystery and adventure games, and from that came Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
MC: Before developing Ace Attorney you worked on Dino Crisis. How does one go from dinosaur survival horror to virtual courtrooms?
ST: Dino Crisis was the brainchild of my then boss, Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami. Working on his projects taught me not only how to make games, but also how to think about them. After Dino Crisis 2 wrapped, Mr Mikami gave me six months in which to create any kind of game I wanted.
I was still pretty wet behind the ears, but as I'd originally joined Capcom with a desire to create mystery and adventure games, this was a huge chance for me to make my mark as a creator. In the end it took a team of seven 10 months to produce the first GBA Ace Attorney title. Having the freedom to create exactly the kind of game I wanted was amazing and it was a real pleasure to work on that project.
MC: Can you remember when the idea of Ace Attorney first came to you? How did your bosses respond to the idea of a lawyer-based adventure game when you first described it to them?
ST: It was in 2000 when Mr Mikami said I could make my own game and my original idea was a fairly typical adventure with a detective as the main character. Most mystery adventures have the player choose from a number of different dialogue options for their character in order to progress the story, but I wanted a new gameplay style that enabled players to deduce for themselves what was happening, rather than just selecting canned responses. I developed this into the concept of facing off against the suspect in a crime and exposing the contradictions in their statements.
I was sure my new idea would be a fun and original take on the genre, so I started to revise the main character, since a detective would be too traditional for such an original concept. I asked myself, "What kind of professional would face off against a suspect and expose their contradictory statements?" The answer, of course, was a lawyer and so the Ace Attorney concept was born.
(source, from an interview on the making of the series)
Takumi’s original concept for the game involved Phoenix as not a defense lawyer, but as a detective. The gameplay was to consist of “facing off against the suspect of a crime and finding the contradictions in their statements.” However, Takumi eventually realized that taking apart contradictions wasn’t really a detective’s job, and decided to change the protagonist to a lawyer and the setting to a courtroom instead. And thus, the game’s concept was finalized.
Janet: As you know, “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy” is coming out world-wide this winter, and as I was brainstorming what to write about for this week’s blog, I remembered your tweets from 2010.
Takumi: Tweets from 2010?
Janet: …Well, it was a long time ago…
Takumi: ???
Janet: I-It’s OK if you don’t remember…
Takumi: …Oh, THOSE! Yes!
Janet: I remember reading them and being shocked by how different the original draft of the game’s story was – how Phoenix wasn’t even a lawyer, but a private eye!
Takumi: Yes, AA was originally supposed to be a detective game, so naturally, Phoenix was to be a private eye. But then, one day, I made a startling realization: the gameplay concept I was going for was for players to enjoy finding and taking contradictions apart, but that was hardly related to investigating or detective work at all. In that moment, I had it – I realized that the main setting for the game should be the courtroom.
Janet: That’s quite the jump, but you know, I can’t imagine this series being anything else at this point.
(source, from an interview by Janet Hsu about the game’s early development)
During the development for the game, Takumi actually knew very little about the intricacies of the legal system--and in fact, he’s been very transparent about that fact in interviews. There’s even a story he talks about in a blog post where he was asked “shouldn’t we do some research on law before we make this game?” and agonized over it for a bit before deciding that being accurate about courtroom processes wasn’t important--what was important was that the game made the trials exciting and fun.
November, 2000. The characters were coming together, and I was working desperately on my first scenario (the current Turnabout Sisters). One day, I was asked about the one thing I didn’t want to be asked about.
“Mr. Takumi. Don’t we need to do some research on law?”
The knowledge I have about the law, pretty amounts to the one fact that in Japan we have the Roppō Zensho ('Complete Book of The Six Major Legal Codes').
“Don’t bother with that. This is a detective game. “
It should have been over with this one line, but…
“But this isn’t a detective game, it’s a lawyer game!”
“If it’s not going to be realistic, I don’t see why this should be about trials.”
“People who play this might get wrong knowledge from the game!”
“We might get sued by the Bar Association!”
“They’ll start complaining!”
…Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney GBA) is simply a “mystery game.” “Being realistic” is not what is important. What’s important is emphasizing, and recreating the unique “atmosphere” and “tension” of the courtroom. That is why the judge uses a gavel, even though no judge uses that, and why Naruhodō shouts "Objection!" even though nobody does that either. This game does not need a “realistic courtroom”!
Chasing the true murderer down to the end, and then getting applauded for that in the courtroom. That feeling of thrill and excitement. It was only by February of the following year when we finally manage to recreate that in the game. The couple of months after this had happened, we looked around, got lost and troubled our minds in search for the answer of the big question of “How do we make a trial into a game?”.  Fall was passing by, and the cold winter was close upon us.
(source, from an archived blog post by Takumi)
So, realism and knowledge of law wasn’t important to Takumi during the development of the series. But there’s also the fact that Takumi has actually personally denied that the Ace Attorney series was an intentional satire or criticism of the court system at any point. In fact, according to a blog post (done as if Phoenix and Maya were reading the column and commenting on it), he actually dislikes people seeing his work this way, as he never intended the games to have any big political statements.
A major prerequisite for Gyakuten Saiban is it’s so simple “even my mother could play it”.  So there is only one point at the core of the game: “Seeing through lies”.
Naruhodō: It wasn’t even supposed to be a game about the trials at first. Mayoi: Eh! Really?! Naruhodō: “Simple” is basically all this game is about, according to TakuShū. Mayoi: What do you mean? Naruhodō: He didn’t want to add all kinds of elements for the player to think about, like alibis, tricks or about the culprit. It’d just confuse them. Mayoi: Really. Naruhodō: Basically, you can proceed in the game if you just think about where the contradiction is. He figured that with that, the controls of the game could also stay simple. Mayoi: But, but, why the trials then? Naruhodō: “A story about a detective seeing through lies” wouldn’t be any different from the other games out there. So that’s why he decided to have someone whose job is seeing through lies as the protagonist. Mayoi: So a defense attorney. Naruhodō: Occasionally  TakuShū sees magazines introducing the game as “a work that dared to take on the theme of trials”, and that actually hurts him. Mayoi: He never meant to be something as big as that….
(source, from the mentioned blog post)
Ultimately I see how easy it is, if you know a good amount about both Ace Attorney and Japan’s legal system, to come to the conclusion that the games were made as a dig against the latter. However, somewhere along the line, people apparently stopped seeing this as merely a theory and instead as a definite fact. Now, that doesn’t mean that the theory is entirely unfounded--given that Takumi focused only on making trials interesting and fun in the games, you could say that the games work as an light, comedic parody, not meant to make any political statements. And hey, maybe there’s something I missed--maybe there were other people working on the series who did have significant knowledge of law and wrote some parts of the games as intentional satire of the system. Again, if anyone has evidence of this, don’t hesitate to provide it. But with what I know, I don’t think going “well actually” to people who point out the ridiculousness and unfairness of Ace Attorney’s court system is necessary. It’s simply that way to make the games more fun.

WinterIron fic rec 2021: Part I
Note: this fic rec consists only of Bucky Barnes/Tony Stark fics. the only Stucky & Stony you might see is as past relationships but that’s it. it’s also complete works ONLY. also - no underage stuff 🔪.  if you have any requests for Winteriron fic recs (for e.g non-superpower au, only one shots, series, hardcore smut, post-tws, college au, not team cap friendly fics, bodyguard au etc.) you can send me requests ^^. anyway... enjoy 😉
✨ The Guiding of Death by RayShippouUchiha
“That whole Merchant of Death thing,” someone off to the side faux whispers, “makes a lot more sense now.”
It echoes across the bridge like a gunshot.
Rated M, Hades & Persephone AU, Canon Divergence, always female Tony Stark, not Team Cap friendly. word count: 41391
(note: listen... I know het pairings and/or gender bend is not popular and I never really read those in general BUT this is straight up one of the best fics I have ever read so I NEEDED to share this with y’all...✌️)
✨ Forms of Love by bear_bell
Tony's the bad guy, after all. He's used to it. He's fine with it. He's good at it.
Only now, there's something far worse loitering around the tower - The Winter Soldier. No one notices the guy at first, but when they do, Tony figures that he should have the soldier's back.
Birds of a feather should flock together, and the bad guys should start a book club.
Rated E, Post-CW, Bucky Barnes & Winter Soldier are Different Personalities, Team Iron Man. word count: 33591
 Looking at You by NotEvenCloseToStraight
Bucky looks for so long that now all he wants to do is touch and hold and fix everything. But Tony can barely be in the same room as Bucky, cant even look him in the eye. So Bucky doesn't know what to do about Tony, but he is determined to do something. Because all he wants is to look at Tony, and see Tony looking back with a smile.
Rated E, Post-CW, PTSD, team heals, mental healing, forgiveness, angst with a happy ending. word count: 28,168
✨ I'll Be Your Bodyguard (If You'll Be My Security Blanket) by NarutoRox
When one of Loki's pranks gone wrong leaves the team with a young Winter Soldier in their care, they know they're going to have their hands full. Especially since this newer, tinier version of Bucky seems to have a bodyguard complex - and a particular attachment to Tony.
Rated T, kid fic, age regression/de-aging, de-aged Bucky, tiny bodyguard Bucky. word count: 4,993.
(note: finally something CUTE. Im so sorry for being such a slut for angst and heavy stuff 😅)
✨ Fate Strings Not Required by Akira_of_the_Twilight
Tony took the hint.
Tony wrapped his hand around the new guy’s elbow. He kept his touch light and breakable in case he’d misread the cue.
“Just some guy claiming to be my soul mate, babe.”
The new guy’s eyebrows rose to his hairline in surprise. He chuckled and gave the first guy a smirk. “Strange. Last time I checked we were soul mates.”
Rated T, AU - no superpowers, AU - soulmates, Bodyguard Bucky Barnes, age difference. word count: 7,032.
✨ Shameless  by Finely Honed (jaqen_hgar)
Tony isn’t actually sure which of them starts it—he’d like to take credit, but if he’s learned anything it’s that Barnes is by no means a wilting flower. Besides, the start doesn’t matter as much as figuring out who’s going to actually finish it.
rated M, flirting, dirty talk, sexual tension. word count: 2,560
✨ Winter Wooer by salytierra
Winter may not be the most pleasant guy to live or share your body with, but he isn't nearly as destructive as everybody expected him to be either. He likes to brood in the corners, watch British TV, and freak people out. And Tony. He really, really likes Tony Stark. There's just one problem – Bucky's pretty sure he doesn't feel the same way about the guy.
Rated M, Bucky Barnes & Winter Soldier are Different Personalities, team as family. word count: 8,726
✨ Even Darkness Must Pass by Finely Honed (jaqen_hgar)
“Fake it till you make it,” Bucky whispered to himself, swallowing around his panic. Sam had drilled the idea into him, and it had become a mantra of sorts, something to hold onto when all he wanted to do was blend into the shadows and disappear.
“You’ll be fine.”
Steve placed a warm, strong hand on Bucky’s shoulder and squeezed, his super soldier ears having picked up Bucky uttering the now familiar saying.
Bucky nodded, tried to believe his own words, and followed Steve onto the common floor, a wall of sound hitting them as they entered.
rated M (but mild sexual content), parent Tony Stark, Bucky Barnes recovering, team as family, of love and hobbits 🧝🏻‍♂️. word count: 15,289
✨ Paths Are Made by Walking by Potrix
The road to recovery is long, winding and a different one for every person walking it. Bucky chooses to help himself the only way he knows how; by doing what he does best.
Or, alternatively; the one in which Tony is a mess and accidentally kick-starts Bucky’s protective mother hen instincts.
rated T, post-TWS, fluff, humour, getting together, idiots in love. word count: 4,744.
✨ Rise In Perfect Light (Be Not Fearful Of The Night) by RayShippouUchiha
At first, the new element singing in his chest, Tony doesn’t understand what he’s done.
Doesn’t understand the full consequences of his actions.
But, to be fair, there’s no way he really could have.
Not even a futurist like him could have ever seen this coming.
rated G, post-CW, past Stony, angst with a happy ending. word count: 3,589.
(note: this fic is SO BEAUTIFUL. lemme just asjkdjnsjkdm)
✨ and amidst the ruins, there was you by TheKitteh
With everything resolved - post the Berlin conflict, Siberia and the rogue Avengers' return - Tony relishes in the clarity of what the team is now. He can finally see the well-defined lines, he can rely on solid rules and the chain of command. He's settled into his life like never before.
That is, until one day, an unhinged sorcerer with no grasp on his magic shatters that new-found balance.
As a result, half of Tony's soul is now gone, but he's willing to do anything to get it back.
rated T, post-CW, canon divergence, au - Dystopia, Dimension Travel, magical accidents, slow burn, getting together. word count: 36,976
✨ and so we unfold by TheKitteh
Senbazuru. Thousand Cranes.
An ancient Japanese legend that promises anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. Some stories believe you are granted happiness and eternal good luck, instead of just one wish, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury.
Bucky’s not big on believing in any legends, not after all that has happened. He just wants to create something for a change, not destroy.
He needs to prove himself that he can be trusted to handle something delicate. He doesn’t need a promise of a wish come true. He just,- needs to do this for himself.
He doesn’t need noticing how sad, tired Stark looks. Doesn’t need to want to do something for the man, when he can barely do anything for himself.
rated T, CACW canon divergence, getting together, reconciliation, POV alternating, Bucky Barnes recovering. word count: 14,449
✨ Spilt on the Ground like Water by tisfan
Tony has been black-bagged and illegally held at the Raft. Steve has no intentions of going to rescue him.
But the Winter Soldier isn't going to leave him behind.
rated E, Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes, implied/referenced torture, frottage, dub-con, mention of part non-con (HYDRA trash party), not Steve friendly, suicidal thoughts, touch-starved. word count: 10,853

No one ever said Avenging would be easy, but Bucky could have really used a memo about the weeks where the hits just didn’t stop coming. It had been an adventure, navigating the sweetly apologetic Bucky Barnes, who haunted the tower most days, and the the Winter Soldier, who occasionally inhabited Barnes’s body. The Winter Soldier was not apologetic; he was scary. And he was currently chilling out, uninvited, in Tony's lab.
“Leave,” Tony said, because Tony was either a dead man or not, and there wasn’t much he could do about it before coffee.
“Or you could give me permission to be here,” the Winter Soldier suggested.
“I don’t let strangers poke around my stuff,” Tony grumbled, as he walked past the Soldier to take a seat at his workbench.

For years, Tony had successfully kept his secret. Neither the world nor his team knew he was Iron Man and as far as he was concerned, everyone was better off that way. On his best days, Tony Stark was not someone people liked and trusted, so the last thing Tony wanted was to tarnish Iron Man’s good reputation by revealing the truth.
But then SHIELD falls, the Avengers face disarray, and a stray Hydra assassin forces Tony to go into hiding—and where better than the safe house he had just crafted for the Avengers and their own ex-assassin ready to come in from the cold?
Tony plans to hide away from everyone in his makeshift workshop until the coast is clear and he’s safe to go home. No one would care to spend any time with the reclusive, arrogant billionaire anyways, right? Iron Man is the one everyone wants around.
Bucky Barnes, on his own journey to reclaim his life and identity, seems to disagree with that sentiment.

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life <I’M FINE>
BTS Universe Story Highlights, pt. 1 / 4
» pt. 2
Introduction
BTS Universe Story, a mobile game published by Netmarble, was released on September 24, 2020. While the majority of the app is essentially a sandbox and engine for users to create their own interactive stories, it also includes official and canon BU content. The first eight segments were introduced between the release date and December 2020, gathered under the title The Most Beautiful Moment in Life <I’M FINE>.
“I’m Fine” is half of the I’m Fine/Save Me ambigram introduced in the Love Yourself era. Notably, all of the BU content available in the game so far falls between events of the webtoon Save Me (also called HYYH0 in its logo) and The Notes 1—chronologically, that is, while bearing in mind that time resets to the morning of 11 April Year 22 whenever SeokJin fails to avert a tragedy among his six friends. I want to assure anyone who is unable to play the game that you are not missing any new, major plot beats from the overall BU narrative. Instead, the stories provide more insight into the motivations and consequences of SeokJin’s decisions in the earlier time loops, as well as more depth to individual characters and their circumstances.
The goal of this guide is to summarize each of the eight stories and highlight noteworthy details, especially if they are not yet present in other BU media. Within each story (which I often refer to as an arc, due to their character-focused nature), episodes must be played successively, but the stories themselves can be played in any order. I will present them over a series of posts in the order they are listed under the <I’M FINE> heading. The Prologue and NamJoon’s arc are free to play; the rest are paid content. Please note that due to the app’s Terms & Conditions, I will not include in-game footage here. The images in this guide are sourced from the official trailers/videos and the live action MVs as appropriate.
Content warning: contains references to death, suicide, suicidal ideation, child abuse, domestic violence, blood, homicide, depression, trauma, PTSD
This guide contains major spoilers and includes references to other BU media

Game Mechanic
Before diving into the summaries, I would like to address the primary mechanic of the game: the user’s control of character choices at designated moments in the stories. It’s a primary marketing point that the player can influence the progression of the narrative, with a frequent in-app tip also declaring, “stories’ endings can vary depending on your choices.” The latter is not strictly true—and it cannot be true due to the structure of the game. Choices are presented within most (not all) episodes, but each episode is an isolated unit: episode 2 provides the same content regardless of what you choose in episode 1. Since the consequences of your decisions are not cumulative, each episode reaches the same ending, and each decision inevitably rejoins the “main” story path (effectively reducing the script size).
So what is the point of this mechanic? While the system is not nearly as complex as what major platform titles are capable of nowadays (I suspect due in large part to the story creation portion of the game), it does foster a sense of interaction with the narrative that isn’t present in static visual media like comics or film. The episodes with choices also have incentive for replay to discover the impact of changing a character’s dialogue or action. Sometimes the differences between the outcomes are inconsequential, but other times you unearth new details, interactions, or memories that are missing in the other path.
I say this partially in reaction to all of the comments and tweets I read for the game trailers and even Smeraldo Book twitter’s choose-your-own-adventure style teasers with The Notes 2 excerpts released last summer. Many users expressed excitement, through words or memes, about finally being able to give the boys the happy ending they deserved. I don’t fault anyone for wanting that happy ending—I wish for it, too. But no matter what the rather overzealous marketing has claimed, I don’t believe that the canon ending of BU is ever meant to be in the audience’s control. But I do feel that this mechanism fits the BU narrative. It echoes the “countless loops” SeokJin has experienced in an effort to save his friends, the choices he must make at every crossroad, and the butterfly effect those actions have on all of their lives. I think it is reasonable to interpret the simple branching paths in the game as alternatives SeokJin has explored across multiple loops in his struggle to find the “right” way forward. I’d love to hear if you have theories of your own!

Prologue
The prologue is a brief episode introducing SeokJin’s repeated struggle and failure to save his friends. He wakes up yet again in his bed on 11 April Year 22, the beginning of the time loop. After reflecting on the tragedies that keep befalling the others, SeokJin realizes that he has only tried to fix the problems he can see. He wonders: “Have I tried to understand the root of my friends’ misfortunes? How much do I really know about my friends? Maybe I was never brave enough to confront their real scars and the worlds they’ve been living in. But I need to do it. Because it may be the key to saving them all.”

How to Offer a Hand
In this story, SeokJin attempts to prevent NamJoon’s arrest after he gets in a fight with a rude customer at Naeri Gas Station, his place of work. The first episode opens on the night of 11 April Year 22 with NamJoon curling his fists, glaring as crumpled bills lie untouched on the pavement. (The money looks similar to the shot from the I Need U MV.) SeokJin reaches for his shoulder, but NamJoon shrugs him off and strides away to punch the customer who deliberately dropped the bills for him to pick up. The gas station owner runs over at the customer’s furious shouts and orders NamJoon to apologize. He refuses, and police officers soon arrive and charge him with assault. No one listens to SeokJin’s protests that the customer started it first. The man sneers as NamJoon enters the police car. “Do you even have money for a settlement? Hey, you’re done for.” NamJoon is sentenced to prison again, and SeokJin hears glass shattering before the loop resets.
Rising from his bed on the morning of 11 April, SeokJin reflects on his failed efforts so far. He has hit the customer’s car, called for NamJoon in the middle of the incident, and stopped the fight himself, the latter of which caused his friends to avoid him later. The fight has even escalated; the details are unspecified, but the audience is provided an ominous shot of SeokJin speaking to a police officer alone at the scene. NamJoon is not the kind of person who would normally respond to that kind of provocation with his fists. SeokJin realizes that he cannot merely stop the fight but must discover and fix the true cause of it.
With this in mind, SeokJin heads to Naeri Gas Station during the day and tries to engage NamJoon. This is their first time meeting since they both returned to Songju, although SeokJin has experienced it in many loops already. “It’s been a while,” he greets (as he does at the end of the Blood Sweat & Tears Japanese version MV). Before SeokJin can dig deeper in their conversation, NamJoon is called away by his boss. SeokJin enters the small employee break room which serves as NamJoon’s living space when he’s not at the container, hoping to find some clues about his friend’s life. SeokJin locates something bundled in newspapers. If the player chooses to open it, he sees a strange shard of glass inside that may belong to a car or motorcycle headlight. He continues on, finding the book Cosmos by Carl Sagan and a notebook. SeokJin hesitates over the invasion of privacy but decides to read it since he needs all the information that he can gather. The journal entries detail NamJoon’s daily life since returning to Songju: his work at the gas station isn’t too bad despite the occasional rude customer; he purchased a book and hopes to get more in the future; he picked up a second job at a wedding hall to help catch up on bills; his brother NamHyeon got in trouble again, leading to more expenses; and his dad’s health has worsened, with hospital bills after an emergency surgery rising to levels that the family cannot afford. SeokJin knew that NamJoon was the de facto head of household due to his father’s illness but was unaware that it was to this degree. He feels sorry for NamJoon yet is also impressed by his maturity, for NamJoon never writes how difficult his situation is.
NamJoon arrives and asks what SeokJin is doing in the room. If the player chooses to answer “reading” instead of “just sitting there,” SeokJin privately observes that the conversation flows more easily when they talk about books. NamJoon says he must leave and declines when SeokJin offers to wait for him there. SeokJin knocks over a pile of books along with money and receipts as he stands. He thinks it is unusual that NamJoon picks up the books before the money. The books seem to be more than a hobby to NamJoon, holding special meaning. Walking to his car, SeokJin wonders if it is pride or determination not to falter that keeps NamJoon from journaling his grievances. He realizes that money is a constant source of frustration and misery to NamJoon, and that’s why he can’t stomach being insulted over the customer’s dropped money. SeokJin’s new plan is to prevent NamJoon from picking up the money. He also calls Palgok County Hospital and offers to pay the patient bill for NamJoon’s father. Anticipating that NamJoon will be angry if he finds out, SeokJin says the payer is Songho Foundation.
That night, SeokJin returns to the gas station with the excuse that he forgot to fill up earlier. The luxury car arrives with a honk, and NamJoon hurries over to assist. He shakes with anger when the customer drops the money on the ground. “Why aren’t you picking it up? You don’t want it? What’s with that look? Pretty arrogant for a part-timer, aren’t you?” goads the customer. SeokJin intervenes. Whether the player chooses to have him advise NamJoon not to pick it up or to order the customer to pick it up himself, the end result is the same. SeokJin asks the customer, “Why are you harassing a pitiful part-timer?” The customer drives away, and something about NamJoon seems off. His face is expressionless, not mad or humiliated. “SeokJin, you…” He stops. “Never mind. Thank you for your help.” The words sound difficult for him to speak.
SeokJin believes that he has saved NamJoon, although this ending feels sloppy. He continues on in the loop to rescue JungKook and later YoonGi, but uneasiness plagues him. Though he meant to help NamJoon with his actions, SeokJin wonders if he hurt him instead. On 5 May Year 22, he returns to the gas station and follows NamJoon when he leaves work early. NamJoon enters a bookstore, and SeokJin sneaks in after him to watch from afar. He overhears employees talking about NamJoon, worrying that he might dirty the pages of the book he’s perusing. NamJoon is too absorbed in the book to notice one of them calling for his attention. SeokJin recalls a memory from their school days when he found NamJoon reading alone in their classroom hideout: he asked why NamJoon read so diligently, and his friend explained that he found it comforting to empty his thoughts of everything else while focused on the book. In the present, SeokJin wonders how he forgot how much books mean to NamJoon. He sacrifices some of his food and transportation budget to afford them, but they enable him “to endure the weight of the world he’s forced to bear on his shoulders.” After realizing this, SeokJin wants to apologize for carelessly sympathizing with the reality that NamJoon has weathered alone.
The next episode is from NamJoon’s perspective, revealing his excitement over being able to purchase a book for the first time in two months. He wants to buy two but can only afford one. The employee at the register sighs and asks why he leafed through a book he wasn’t going to buy. NamJoon apologizes, and she mutters, “So dirty.” He notices his reflection, clothes worn and smelling of gasoline, and realizes she’s talking about him, not the book. He tries to shake off these depressing thoughts, but he is still not accustomed to this treatment despite experiencing it regularly at work. As NamJoon begins to exit the store, the security alarm goes off. The employees demand to check his bag despite his insistence that he didn’t steal anything. Their certainty of his theft angers him. NamJoon allows them to look through his bag, and they are suspicious of the like-new book in it which he brought from home. One begins to call the police until SeokJin appears, vouching for NamJoon by saying he saw everything. The employees accept that the alarm malfunctioned and excuse their suspicions as a mistake.
Outside, SeokJin asks NamJoon if he is all right. NamJoon is thankful but wonders how SeokJin materialized right when he needed him. “How’d you find me here?” he asks aloud. SeokJin explains that he happened to notice him while walking through the neighborhood. NamJoon wonders if it’s because they said goodbye on a weird note last time. He thanks him and turns to leave. SeokJin calls after him. “I’m sorry. I wanted to apologize. I didn’t mean to upset you that day at the gas station. It was a mistake to have called you pitiful. If my rash actions hurt you, I’m really sorry.” NamJoon accepts his apology, believing it to be sincere, and says that things would have turned out a lot worse if SeokJin had not intervened. Thunder rolls overhead, and NamJoon uses the impending rain as his excuse to depart. He declines SeokJin’s offer of a ride and runs home, feeling his friend’s eyes on him.
Before he can settle down to read at home, NamJoon receives a call from his cheerful mother. She thanks him for paying off the entire hospital bill. NamJoon is perplexed and asks what’s on the receipt, since he didn’t pay it. His mother wants to leave it be, but he insists that they investigate so they don’t get in trouble or sued. She reads that the Songho Foundation is credited as the payer. NamJoon calls the hospital, introducing himself as the guardian for Kim YoungMin, but they can’t transfer him to the administrative department at this time. Disappointed, he looks up the foundation’s website, unable to recall why it sounds familiar. He wonders why a scholarship foundation in the city would get involved with him. Spotting photos of a recent launch ceremony on the site, he recognizes a few people: Songju High School’s principal, the familiar-looking face of the foundation’s chairman, and SeokJin. First, NamJoon forces a laugh, and then it’s difficult for him to breathe. He thinks that SeokJin really had pitied him at that moment. The only thing keeping NamJoon going is the idea of getting through life on his own strength. Why does he have to live like this?
The last episode opens on 5 May back in SeokJin’s perspective. He is confident now that he has saved NamJoon, although it occurs to him that a better alternative may have been to simply pick up the money himself instead of stepping forward. (This decision is enacted in a later loop and depicted in the Euphoria MV.) While reflecting on what comes next to save his other friends, he receives a text from NamJoon. “What’s your account number? I’ll pay you back for the hospital bills. I don’t need your help. I’ll handle my concerns on my own.” Heart sinking, SeokJin wonders how he found out. With a sense of foreboding, he tries calling NamJoon, but no one answers. SeokJin texts him back, pretending that he doesn’t understand, and tells NamJoon to call him. SeokJin’s second attempt connects while he’s gathering his car keys to visit the container. “That’s enough. Just send the account number over text,” NamJoon instructs. SeokJin coaxes him to talk for a moment, and NamJoon asks flatly, “Are you going to apologize again?” SeokJin attempts to salvage the situation, but his friend turns cold when he insists that NamJoon is misunderstanding and that he just wanted to help. “So, why? Why are you helping me?! Yeah, you’re always a good person. You’ve done nothing wrong and I’m the one misunderstanding.” SeokJin apologizes again. NamJoon refuses his request to meet in person. “No, I thought maybe there was a reason for everything you did… But I guess I misconstrued it. I’ll pay you back, so I’d prefer if you stopped contacting me.” Long after the call ends, SeokJin stands holding his phone, feeling that the glass is going to break at any moment. He wants to believe that it’s not over, but hope is slipping through his fingertips.
The episode finishes in NamJoon’s perspective. On 8 May and 9 May, he accepts part-time delivery work and reflects on his three jobs. Whenever he thinks he’s at his breaking point, he focuses on his new goal of returning SeokJin’s money. On 10 May, NamJoon wakes up to his buzzing phone and is called in to work. On a scooter, he passes by a bus stop and notices graffiti. (This is the same bus stop, with matching graffiti, that appears in the Highlight Reel.) Mesmerized, he wonders if it’s TaeHyung’s. As soon as NamJoon looks up, the scooter’s brake fails, and he crashes. The shattered glass on the cold pavement reminds him of the headlight shard and the kid who looked like TaeHyung. (So the piece of glass SeokJin saw in April was really a memento NamJoon retrieved from the scene of the crash in the mountain town, where the delivery boy whom he privately called TaeHyung died. This event is described in NamJoon’s 17 December Year 21 entry in The Notes 1.) NamJoon’s vision grows blurry, and the distant sound of an ambulance doesn’t come any closer.
The arc concludes there, but it obviously marks another reset for SeokJin. It is interesting to note that in this failed loop, NamJoon suffers the same fate that he narrowly avoided in the snowy mountain town before returning to Songju.
Please stay tuned for the next Highlights post featuring JungKook and YoonGi!

Your Top Five Pulp Heroes that you wish were better known? By Pulp Hero fans, I mean. Since pretty much all of them except Conan and Tarzan are fairly unknown.
It’s actually quite hard for me to narrow it down to just five, because I’m having to choose between characters that are my favorites that I wish were more well-known and appreciated (which is all of them), and characters that aren’t quite my favorites but I very much think should have achieved great popularity for a myriad of reasons. So instead I’m going to pick some of each. These are not necessarily ranked by their importance or my personal taste, just 5 characters I felt like highlighting in particular.
Honorable mentions goes to characters I already talked about prior and don’t want to repeat myself on. These aren’t “lesser” picks, just ones that I already talked about: Imaro (who in particular definitely feels like he could, and should be, a pop culture superstar if he was only more well-known), Kapitan Mors (who’s got a lot in common with one of my favorite fictional characters, Captain Nemo, but also has a lot of interesting things going on for him as his own character). Sar Dubnotal (a character that appeals a lot to me and I think should be included much more often in pulp hero team-ups). The Golden Amazon (again, definitely a character that feels like it’s just begging to have a pop culture breakout, even comic books rarely if ever have female supervillains this ruthless and over-the-top), The Mexican Fantomas (who absolutely deserves a better name than what I’m calling him here, because he’s incredibly awesome and leagues ahead of just being a knock-off). And of course my homeboy, The Grey Claw, whom I would consider Number One of the list if it wasn’t for the fact that his obscurity has left him untouched by copyright and I got plans of my own for the character that wouldn’t be possible if he was more well-known, so I guess I’m ultimately glad he’s obscure (even if I’m still bothered by how little he’s known).
Allright let’s go:
Number 5: Sheridan Doome
Tumblr media
Sheridan Doome appeared in fifty-four stories and three novels from 1935 to 1943. As chief detective for U.S. Naval Intelligence, Lieutenant Commander Sheridan Doome’s job was a grim one. Whenever an extraordinary mystery or crime occurred in the fleet, on a naval base, or anywhere the navy worked to protect American interests, Doome was immediately dispatched to investigate it. Fear and dread would always precede Doome’s arrival in his special black airplane. For, in an explosion during WWI, he had been monstrously disfigured.
He was six feet two inches tall; had a chalk-white face and head. It appeared as though it had once been seared or burned. For eyes, he had only black blotches; glittering optics, that looked like small chunks of coal. His nose was long, the end of it squared off rudely. He had no lips, just a slit that was his mouth. His neck was long, as white and as bony as his face…. Sheridan Doome looked more like a robot than a human being. He was tall and ghastly; his uniform fitted him in a loose manner. Long arms hung at his sides; his face was a perfect blank. He had no control of his facial muscles; consequently, his countenance was always without expression, chalky and bony.
But behind the ugliness was a brilliant mind. Sheridan Doome always got his man. Before Sheridan Doome became a staple in the pages of The Shadow magazine, two Doome hardcover mysteries were written in the mid-1930’s by acclaimed hard-boiled author Steve Fisher (I Wake Up Screaming) and edited by his wife Edythe Seims (Dime Detective, G-8 and His Battle Aces). Age of Aces now brings you both books in one huge double novel, presented in a retro “flip book” style. This book is currently Out of Print.
I sadly don’t have any more information on the character other than this. The book is unavailable for me to acquire in any capacity, and the text above is taken from the Age of Aces website as well as Jess Nevins’s personal profile for the character. I’m not even sure if any of those 54 stories even exist anymore, since although he was published as a backup in Shadow Magazine, there doesn’t seem to be reprints of them anywhere, at least as far as I can find, and the original Shadow magazines have largely turned to dust by now.
A character who combines aspects of The Phantom of the Opera and The Shadow, whose adventures are set in a backdrop that can easily lead to ocean adventures? That’s like, what, three of my favorite things in the world combined. I really, really wish I could at least read the stories this character stars in, but as is, this description is all I can provide. Again, time really has been cruel to the pulp heroes.
Number 4: Harlan Dyce
Tumblr media
This is another character I’ve only been able to learn about through Jess Nevins’s archives and have not been able to attain any further information on, which is sadly the case with a lot of pulp heroes that nowadays only seem to exist as footnotes in his Encyclopedia or records in libraries. I don’t post more about these characters because I really would just be copying the stuff he wrote without much to justify me quoting him verbatim, and I hate the idea of doing that.
I especially hate that in Harlan Dyce’s case though. Here’s his description
“Dyce had brains, taste, money, ambition, and a total lack of physical or spiritual fear. But—
“Dyce was thirty-three inches tall and weighed sixty pounds.
“That was all the world could ever hold against him. That was what had made the world, most of it, in all the countries of the world, stare at Harlan Dyce, billed in the big show as “General Midge.””
Harlan Dyce is a misanthropic and venomous private detective. He has an “amazingly handsome face,” and the aforementioned brains. But all anyone sees is his stature, and he hates that and turns his cold eyes and acid tongue on them.
The only person Dyce likes and gets along with (besides his dwarf wife, a former client) is his assistant, Nick Melchem, a six-foot tall former p.i.’s assistant with bleak eyes and a strong body. Melchem ignores Dyce’s stature and treats Dyce normally, which Dyce responds warmly to.
Dwarfs may be the single most maligned group of people depicted in pulp magazines, even more so than the Japanese in the war years or the Chinese during the peak of the Yellow Peril’s popularity. Evil dwarfs, murderous dwarfs, sexually depraved dwarfs, they are all loathsome, ugly cliches that are, sadly, the only instances you see of dwarf characters being represented at all, with the only ones who are awarded any measure of sympathy are doomed henchmen or tragic villains.  Even outside of the pulps, the only other examples of heroic, protagonist dwarfs I can think off the top of my head are Puck from Marvel Comics and Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones.
I’m not gonna say Harlan Dyce is great representation because I’m not a little person and can never make that kind of claim for a group I’m not a part of, but Harlan Dyce may be the first time I’ve ever seen a dwarf character in pulp fiction who was not a villain or a murderous goon or a victim, but an actual person and a heroic protagonist, and that definitely counts for something. I’m not sure how popular this character was or could be if someone picked up the concept and ran with it (and I’m pretty sure he’s public domain), but I definitely think this is a character that should exist and should be popular.
Hell, this character has Peter Dinklage written all over it, give it to him. Maybe then he will get to play a smart, fearless, cynical, misanthropic but good-natured and heroic character in something where he actually gets to keep these traits until the show ends.
Number 3: Audaz, O Demolidor
Tumblr media
Audaz is a Brazilian character who was created and published by Gazetinha, the same publishers of Grey Claw as well as properties exported from elsewhere like Superman and Popeye, and much like The Grey Claw, he is also completely unknown even here. I’ll get to Audaz more in-depth sometime but here I’m going to provide a quick summary:
Audaz, The Demolisher is a gigantic crime-fighting robot controlled and piloted by the brilliant scientist Dr. Blum, his close friend Gregor and the child prodigy Jacques Ennes, who pilot the giant robot from a massive laboratory inside it's head rather than a cockpit. He takes on a variety of ordinary human criminals, mad scientists, supervillains and invading armies, towering over skyscrapers and grappling with jets.
Audaz was created in 1939 by illustrator Messias de Melo, a year before Quality Comics's Bozo the Iron Man and 5 years before Ryuichi Yokoyama's Kagaku Senshi, and decades before the debut of Mazinger Z. Although he is not the first giant robot of science fiction, he is the first heroic giant robot piloted by human pilots, and thus the first true example of "mecha" fiction.
Number 2: Emilia the Ragdoll
Tumblr media
This is another Brazilian character, although nowhere near as obscure as Audaz as even a cursory Google search can show. Although Brazil did not have a “pulp era” in the same way the US had, we’ve long gotten past the point of sticking to it as a definitive rule, and I’m including Emilia as a pulp hero because she’s a 1920s fantasy literature character who was created under a publishing company that released pulp stories, because she doesn’t quite belong in the mold of fantasy literature characters she takes after, and because I like her and if I was putting a bunch of pulp heroes together in the same story, I would definitely include Emilia in it. It’s not like she really has anywhere else to go, now that she’s public domain and she’s outlasted her franchise.
As you can tell by the above image, Emilia’s had a lot of variations over the years and that’s because the work she was created for, Sítio do Picapau Amarelo (Yellow Woodpecker Ranch/Farm), has become a major bedrock of Brazilian fantasy literature, one of the only works created here that you can find substantial information about in English if you go looking for it. Here’s some descriptions of Emilia’s character:
Emília is a rag doll described as "clumsy" or "ugly", resembling a "witch" that was handmade by Aunt Nastácia, the ranch's cook, for the little girl Lúcia, out of an old skirt. After Lucia takes her on an adventure and the doll is given a dose of magic pills, Emília suddenly started talking, and would never stop henceforth.
Emilia has a rough, antagonistic personality, and an independent, free-spirited and anarchist behaviour. She is rogue, rebellious, stubborn, rough and intensely determined at anything she sets her mind on, eager to take off on just about any adventure. She is often immature and behaves like a curious and arrogant child, always wanting to be the center of attention.
She is extremely opinionated even when she constantly and confidently mispronounces words and expressions. Her attitude often gets her into trouble, and she very often has to fight against the villains who attack her home on the Yellow Woodpecker Farm and mistreat her friends.
In the stories, Emilia often takes the role of a heroine who travels through different realms and dimensions, as the books include not only figures from Brazilian and worldwide folklore, but also several characters both real and fictional, such as Hercules, King Arthur, Don Quixote, Thumbelina, Da Vinci, Shirley Temple, Captain Hook, Santos Dumont and Baron von Munchausen.
She's fought scorpions and martians and nymph hordes, her arch-enemy is an alligator witch, she rescued an angel from the Milky Way and tried to teach it how to become a human, and once shrunk the entire population of Earth to try and talk the president of the United States into ending war forever.
To little surprise, she has become the most popular character and the series’s mascot.
It’s a little strange to consider Emilia underrated considering she is one of the most famous original characters of Brazilian literature, but hardly anyone outside of Brazil even knows who she is, and regardless of the quality of the original stories (and Monteiro Lobato’s views on race that tar much of his reputation), Emilia definitely feels to me like a character that should be a lot more popular globally.
She is the only character from Yellow Woodpecker Ranch that has transcended the original stories, since she was always the most popular character and there’s been a couple of stories written about her that usually separate her from the ranch and just set her out on the world by herself. The latest story about this character has been a series called The Return of Emilia, that’s about her stepping out of the books in 2050 and discovering a Brazil that’s been ruined by social and ecological devastation, and traveling back in time via a flying scooter in order to try and prevent this calamity.
Now that she’s public domain, I definitely think there’s some great stories that can be told with the character that just about anyone could get to, and I definitely think she’s a character that deserves more appreciation. Anything goes in stories starring her and it’s that kind of free-for-all freedom that I think can benefit future takes on pulp heroes. I would be very happy to place Emilia among them.
Oh yeah, and there was one time she kicked Popeye's ass by tricking him with a can of mouldy cabbage instead of spinach, making him sick and then beating him, which possibly puts her as one of the all-time badasses of fiction, except she would be pissed at not being number one and likely embark on a quest to beat everyone else just to prove she could, because that’s how Emilia rolls.
Number 1: Luna Bartendale, from The Undying Monster (1922)
Tumblr media
Not necessarily my favorite of the bunch, but one who sort of epitomizes what you asked, a character who is both incredibly obscure and incredibly underrated in every sense. Despite the book being somewhat known, mainly thanks to the movie, the character is so obscure that I don’t even have an illustration of her to display here, not even fan art, just one of the book’s covers that I think best conveys it. Luckily, the book is also available freely online, so you can all go check it out here. The movie adaptation does not feature the character of Luna Bartendale which makes it pointless to talk about.
To not spoil it too much, The Undying Monster is a very fascinating book, ahead of it’s time in quite a few ways. You expect it to just be a detective story centered around a werewolf cursed, except the subtitle of the book is “The Fifth Dimension” and then it goes to talk about dimensions of thought and post-WWI trauma and love and hypnotic regression that travels through time and ancient runes and Norse mythology. It’s not exactly an easy book to get through in one setting, but I’d recommend it much the same if only because it’s got supersensitive psychic sleuth Luna Bartendale, literature’s first female occult detective, and she’s an incredible character who absolutely feels like she should have become a literary icon.
She lives in London but is world-renowned for her many good deeds. She is a small, pretty woman, with curly blonde hair, dark eyebrows and a high-bridged nose, and a slight build. She has a voice described as a light soprano that "does not make much noise but carries a long way".
Petite, bedimpled and golden curled, Luna is completely in charge of events, dominating every scene that she appears in with her welcoming disposition and cleverness.
Bartendale has various psychic powers, including mind reading. She is well-versed in psychic and occult lore, is a “supersensitive” psychic, and has a “Sixth Sense” which allows her to trace things and people through both the Fourth and the Fifth Dimension. (The Fifth Dimension is “the Dimension that surrounds and pervades the Fourth–known as the Supernatural”).
Her extensive knowledge of occult rites and practices puts John Silence, Carnacki and Miles Pennoyer to shame, and she beats them all with her "super-sensitive" gift of being able to psychically connect with troubled souls and hypnotize them.
She uses a divining rod for various tasks, including psychic detection and tracking, and distinguishing between benevolent and malevolent forces. She has various (undefined) powerful psychic defenses, can carry on seances, and can even cure a person of “wehrwolfism.” And she can always rely on her massive, intelligent dog Roska for help.
Luna sadly doesn’t show up in the book as often as I’d hoped, but everything about this character is so delightful. In a lot od ways she hardly feels like a pulp hero, at least the ones I usually talk about. She feels like a lost protagonist from an incredibly successful kid’s adventure series where a kind and eccentric detective witch and her giant dog go around solving occult mysteries and encountering all sorts of weird supernatural beings while counseling and helping people, like Ms Frizzle meets Hilda. Like this character is just waiting for Cartoon Saloon to make a film about her.
Its not so much “this character should/could be popular but it’s clear why that didn’t pan out”, it’s more me being confused as “why the hell isn’t she super popular? This character should have had a franchise ages ago, holy shit put her in everything””

‘My Next Life as A Villainess’ Anime is over...
SO WHAT NOW???
A lot of us are disappointed that Katarina’s adventures are finally over, and a lot of us are gonna miss watching the wacky hi-jinks of our dense villainess. I’ve seen a lot of people say that they will stop posting or paying attention to hamefura after the anime ends, and while I might be the same to some extent, I just want to say that there are still a lot of hamefura things to look forward to after the anime ends!
These are actually some very obvious things to look forward to, but you know I’d still like to share them so you can use them to fill the hole in your heart that the anime left behind.
-------
Edit: (9/30/20) I added stuff, as well as a cut for all yall who says my posts are too long qwq
The Manga
Tumblr media
Hamefura still has an on-going manga that is currently in Chapter 3 of the Light Novels! A lot of you already read it, and understand that it can get frustrating when there’s a lack of updates on the english side of things, but if you’re really curious, you can go over and check out the JP releases every month so you can have an idea of whats to come for the manga :DD (The fan translation of ENG Chapter 26 came out a few days ago so you know it’s not dead!!)
I’d recommend reading the english translation on Mangadex, since most translation groups officially upload their translation on there.
The Spin-off (Hametsuo/Bakarina Alter)
Tumblr media
It deserves it’s own category for just how unique it is in terms of its reception in the western crowd. I know a lot of people probably read it, but I guess people barely talk about because it’s not really that far into it’s premise yet.
I just can’t stop recommending this manga to people (despite not going where I thought it’d be) because of how good the art-style is and how much promise it has. It updates monthly, which I know is a long wait, but it does pay off when you see the quality of everything. Plus it’s just fun to imagine how hamefura would go if it followed the typical “villainess otome isekai” format.
I actually love talking about hametsuo, so maybe my posts are woth the look ;; w ;;
The Light Novels
Tumblr media
credits to @sparckle-art for the scans!
I’m happy to read that a lot of people are gonna go switch and buy the light novels after the anime ends! By the time the anime ends, the Vol. 6 of the LN would release a week later, acting kind of like a replacement of what is supposed to be a new episode for that week.
The fan-translated version of the web novel is available online, up until half of Vol. 4, but I still recommend buying the books on bookwalker (i don’t know if the sale is still there, but I’d recommend picking up the book regardless!). If reading the fan translation piqued your interest, then playing for the books would definitely worth your money if you ask me!
An increase of sales might show them that there’s interest for this light novel, and might make them translate the JP novels even faster! (or maybe i’m just too impatient to wait 2-3 months for Volume 7 dshfjsfgs who knows?)
My only warning is that the tone really does shift post-arc 1 (Fortune Lover I) so if you’re looking for harem hijinks, from spoilers I’ve seen I think there would less of that and more of world building. (ps. please stop asking me where to read it ;;-;;)
Edit: Volume 8 is coming out in a few months, with Volume 9 probably being released at either Jan or Feb next year, then after that it’ll be a yearly update
StoryMe Otome Game
Tumblr media Tumblr media
credit to the hamefura reddit discord for the screenshots!
I’m surprised a lot of people doesn’t know about the StoryMe game, despite it updating every week alongside the anime. Just kidding I didn’t either lol, I actually found about this thanks to the hamefura reddit discord server! StoryMe is a choose-your-own-adventure otome game, kind of like those “Episodes” or “Chapters” game that gets recommended on Youtube a lot.
It’s still in japanese, which is probably why not a lot of people knows of it yet, but it seems like you can play as Katarina and romance anyone from the entire harem (yes, the girls too), so keep you eyes peeled for if ever it gets an english translation!
It’s basically the bluray Fortune Lover game with the DVDs, but instead of Maria, you actually get to play as Katarina!
(I’ll make a separate post for this later, maybe)
Edit: The game just came out in English in September 16, and just spat out a 11-episode update at September 30
tldr: go play it, it has 19 episodes out right now
Katarina’s Farm
Tumblr media
It’s a newly announced mobile game with a web trial version that centers around playing as Katarina, trying to earn money and points for expanding your farm land, planting more expensive plants and getting the other members of the harem to join you! It’s a 2D pixel game that seems like it wouldnt take too much time to play (you can get the first 4 characters within 30 minutes of gameplay, but that might be adjusted in the mobile version) so I understand if it might not interest some people, but that’s still something to look forward to!
I made another post about it so check out the link to the web version here!
The Bluray Otome Game
Tumblr media
While I can’t say this for certain, but maybe if there was ever an official english bluray release, it might include the Fortune Lover Male Capture Target Routes that are included in the game. Maybe someone will play it and translate it even! It would interesting to see how different the boys are, and give us further appreciation for Katarina’s influence and changes!
There’s a preview for a CG in Keith’s Route, which comes with the second bluray (no pv for Geordo ;; w ;;)
Edit: All the boy’s routes are out in Japanese
We don’t know if they’ll ever be released in English though, so hopefully someone translates them at least ;;w;;
The Manga and Yuri Anthology
Missing the hilarious and heartwarming antics of Katarina and her harem? Then you should check out the Manga Anthology (that has just been been translated in its entirety). It’s 14 chapters of absolute hilarity!
There’s also a Yuri Anthology, featuring the 4 girls of the harem! If you’re looking for more of that then, it’s an absolute recommendation!
Spin-off Visual Novel
Tumblr media
Edit: They recently just announced a spinoff visual novel! It takes place after the Fortune Lover 1 Arc and features sexy pirates hgsjhgsdf
It’s just recently announced so there’s not a lot of info besides the company making it (it’s Otomate) and the fact that it’s gonna be an all new Bakarina adventure uwu
Bakarina Radio
I heard there’s a Bakarina Radio too, featurning the VAs of the anime cast.
I don’t know if its a regular thing or a one time thing, but its still worth checkin out!
https//twitter.com/hamehura/status/1309831738525278209
The Second Season of the Anime
Tumblr media
I seriously wasn’t expecting another season, considering how different the next arc is, but I’m happy nonetheless for more Bakarina! I hope this motivates the fans to continue supporting the series, as a bigger reaction will definitely lead to more content for us to enjoy! I have a theory about S2, which I think is worth the read :3c
Other Otome Isekais
There’s a lot of other Villainess Otome Isekai’s that are worth the read, and a lot of them as just as interesting as hamefura, despite the lack of a harem (from deep rooted revenge to hilarious and crazy villainess, there’s a lot!) The quickest recommendation I can give is just looking up “Akuyaku” and “Villainess” on Mangadex (do both btw they dont have the same results), but theres a lot that doesn’t get recommended so do your research! I swear it’s worth your time!
Anyways, I hope any of these fill the hole that the hamefura anime will leave in our hearts as we wait for season 2! (sorry for repeating the same line again hdsfgdjhsfg) Feel free to add anything like fanfic recommendations and artists, as I can’t cover everything on my own, as those really help provide hamefura fans with content :DD

hello 🌹i was very !!! by your most recent post on languages, can i ask how many languages you speak/are learning? and what if anything has helped you the most (courses, workbooks, phone apps, etc)? signed, a faux language learner who never gets past basic greetings
hi ☆
oh man it's one of those "what even counts as speaking a language" situation lol it's hard to say. I'm fully bilingual in french and english (native language/language i learned as a kid). beyond that...
> I.... guess I can say I can speak Japanese now? maybe? not really but it's been something like eight years that I've been learning lol, some of them I wasn't learning at all and others I was learning extremely seriously, and I've lived and held part time jobs in Japan so. it frustrated me for so long how I still couldn't break the fluency barrier even while I was living there, there's just so much to learn and I wasn't learning it efficiently, but I might've finally broken it now maybe. I have the jlpt n2 for what it's worth
> I'm ok with spanish? I can read it fairly fluently and can (or assume I still can lol) do basic conversations, and that's mostly from it being close to french and my being fairly diligent with it back in school, I guess that's the one thing my neuroplasticity decided to be helpful with and I'm not complaining ahah
> did 85% of the italian duolingo course this summer so I can ask customers at work whether they want still or sparkling water lol
> started learning korean last year but I'm still in the beginning phases, i finished the first three grammar books of a course (integrated korean, if anyone's interested) but that's just the obligatory memorising the grammar stage, it's going to be a looong way building from that. started learning because i'm planning on spending a year in korea, covid just shambled lots of things but I'll get back to learning when that plan's on track again
> and the most embarrassing one...,.. I suck at vietnamese, unfortunately :/ it's my maternal family's tongue and i'm definitely planning to master it eventually and i do have my whole life but yeah it's incredible the little ability I have in it despite the time I've spent on it (it's what I was studying in uni before japanese so I even have a degree in it which is even more embarrassing lol). it's a combo of having a bad ear/pronunciation (so I still can't do tones at all) and having little media of interest in the language to hype me so yeah. but one day? I'm definitely not giving up on it ever
As to how best to learn a language, that really depends on the language tbh! for example I used to be pretty anti language apps because my target language for a long time was japanese and it's simply impossible to learn it on something like duolingo, never met anyone who managed it anyway and I've met a lot of them in japan. but as you can see I've found it extremely useful for Italian, a language close to mine -- you can just absently do your lessons and your brain just does the (fairly obvious) connections for you, which is incredible. if your target language has a close level of mutual intelligibility to your native language then def take advantage of that opportunity!
otherwise there's no secret you have to work the grammar diligently if you want the language to open up to you in the first place, and you need to choose your book series wisely for that (or classes, if they're accessible, but I find working by oneself more effective and one on one classes are expensive). for japanese and korean at least you need a good integrated book series that takes you through the beginning stages properly, but the good news is there's several available for each and all you need to do is follow them properly, no extra planning needed. once you're past the beginning stages is where things get harder, and it's where my own weaknesses lie so I won't attempt to give lessons here, but a good intermediate-level learning involves perfecting the grammar, lots of vocabulary learning, lots of exposure to the language at an understandable level (I think the duolingo sentences can actually help with that tbh), and practice if that's accessible. never managed to do all that super well tbh ahah
and yeah diligence is a factor in all that, I think you have to accept that you're never going to learn a language fast (there was a post that said that it takes seven years to become an expert in something and I think it applies to languages, at least languages that aren't close to yours), that you're often going to hit walls where you drop the study for months at a time, but you have to be willing to put in the effort for months on end regardless. so finding your motivation is the most important part of beginning, because without that you really won't get far.
thank you for the ask I hope this gives some food for thought! good luck with your language adventures should you take them up again o/

Voluptas Noctis Aeternae {Part 7.22}
Tumblr media
*Severus Snape x OC*
Summary: It is the year 1983 when the ordinary life of Robin Mitchell takes a drastic turn: she is accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Despite the struggles of being a muggle-born in Slytherin, she soon discovers her passion for Potions, and even manages the impossible: gaining the favor of Severus Snape. Throughout the years, Robin finds that the not quite so ordinary Potions Professor goes from being a brooding stranger to being more than she had ever deemed possible. An ally, a mentor, a friend... and eventually, the person she loves the most. Through adventure, prophecies and the little struggles of daily life in a castle full of mysteries, Robin chooses a path for herself, an unlikely friendship blossoms into something more, and two people abandoned by the world can finally find a home.
General warnings: professor x student, blood, violence, trauma, neglectful families, bullying, cursing
Words: 4.7k

______________________________
The two weeks that followed upon the dancing class were no different than Christmas time at Hogwarts always had been: it was snowy beyond reason, cold as hell, but the decorations that were put up actually brightened most people's mood and rendered everyone almost disgustingly cheerful. However, there were differences this year, and no matter how subtle they were, Robin still had no trouble pinpointing them with a striking accuracy.
One, both Cas and Jorien had chosen to stay at school over the holidays, mostly due to the fact that they were now in fourth year and thus officially allowed to attend the ball even without being someone's plus one. Besides that, they wanted to spend Robin's last ball at Hogwarts here with her, just once, all six of them together. Well, seven technically, but Robin still didn't know how she was supposed to get Snape into that equation.
Two, Robin spent significantly less time working for Sprout or Hagrid than she had during the last years (she did already work with them in the plenty during the school weeks at this point after all), and instead spent significantly more time with Snape, playing wizard's chess or reading during the days when the work was done, and drinking mulled wine, firewhisky or plain old coffee in his rooms at night.
And three, the two previous changes in addition to the revelations that had come up during lunch after the dancing class now made it near impossible for Robin to get the girls' words out of her head. Did Snape really look at her all that differently than at other people? Well, he certainly did, but that after all might merely be due to the fact that she was his best friend, just like he was hers. It didn't mean anything that his eyes followed her through the halls during meals, or that she slinked through the corridors on her way from his room to her own in an increasing frequency and like a bloody first year trying not to get caught after curfew. It didn't mean anything that he would sometimes just observe her with an expression that made her skin tingle while she rambled on about whatever had caught her attention now, and it most definitely didn't mean anything that he had gifted her that Japanese dictionary she had been trying to get her hands on for over a year now for Christmas. Without losing a word about it, of course, and in complete denial that it had anything to do with the holidays.
Put shortly, Robin couldn't help keeping her eyes open now that Jorien had so bluntly prompted her to. And every little thing she discovered made her want to sink back into deep denial indeed, and build a twenty feet brick wall around herself. Sometimes being the god of a universe of illusion is easier than being a peasant in the hell that is reality.
Honestly, she had never before actually considered that she might be scared to see the reality she found herself in, and found in herself. That she was scared to death not only of his true feelings, of being rejected, but also very much of her own emotions. It had been quite blissful to live in the easy fixed knowledge that she loved him, without actually paying attention to the reality of her feelings. And in reality, she felt something so intense and overwhelming that it terrified her to pieces. If only things were as easy as saying she loved him… Because if she was keeping her eyes open now, not only to her surroundings but also to herself, it was so much more than that. He was her best friend after all, her family and home, and after seven bloody years, there was no denying that he had also become a part of herself. Sure, she would be able to live without him, but what really mattered was that she would move heaven and hell to ensure she would never have to. Bloody hell, what a mess that would become once she left school in no more than half a year… And then, she could only hope that he would want to keep her in his life as well.
"Earth to Robin!" Jorien waved her hand in front of Robin's face, which was the first thing Robin noticed when she snapped out of her thoughts. "If you keep daydreaming like that, we'll be late to the ball!"
"We still have three hours until it's time to head up there." Robin huffed while rolling her eyes, but still shut the book in her lap she'd been failing to read for the last thirty minutes anyway. "I don't plan on sitting around in my dress until then."
"Are you sure that you want to wear the same one as last year?" Cas inquired in what sounded close to a whine. "I still stand by my offer to lend you one of mine!"
"Pff, yeah, Robin in a peach coloured glittery dress…" Jorien snorted, shaking her head at her friend. "You might be close to the same height, but your style is entirely different."
"I know that!"
"Obviously you don't. And Robin has a completely different body shape than you do, in addition to that."
"Hey, it's not my fault that I have muscles in my body!" Cas huffed with a glare at her friend. "Making the Quidditch team and staying on the team requires at least some level of physical fitness."
"Hey, I do have muscles!" Robin protested immediately, but she couldn't say that she felt offended by the girl's words. It was no secret that Cas definitely was the athletic type, whereas Robin's virtues were of a more academic nature.
"Yes, that, and I was actually referring to the fact that you are quite a bit more gifted in the upper regions than Robin." Jorien added with a pointed look at Cas, who crossed her arms over her chest with a blush and a pout.
"Guys, it doesn't matter, alright? I'm actually very much looking forward to wearing the same dress as last year." Robin tried to mend the field with diplomacy and an easy shrug. "The only reason I'm wearing a dress in the first place is so that I fit in a bit better."
"With Snape or with the crowd?" Cas returned with a smirk, all embarrassment forgotten. "Because while the former is quite the success with your dress, it logically eradicates the possibility for the latter to be too."
"That sounded way too Simon of you." Jorien snorted, then dodged the pillow that came flying her way. "What! It's not my fault that you guys are adopting each other's speech patterns more and more."
"So what's the plan for tonight?" Robin barged in before Cas could come up with a reply to get their bickering going again. There had been enough of that at breakfast. "Simon obviously is Cas' date, Gideon asked Lisa and Micheal's still trying to find someone. What about you, Jorien? Any prospects?"
"I asked Melissa." She shrugged casually in return, then started picking at her nails. "She'd rather go with a boy than with me. Better a date than a friend-date, and all that… Perhaps I should set her up with Michael, if both are so desperate to find someone to bring along. Quite pathetic, if you ask me. I'd rather go alone than be someone's last resort."
"Going alone is perfectly fine, I haven't ever had a date to the ball either." Robin shrugged with an encouraging smile. "You can be my date, if it means anything to you."
"You've been someone's unofficial date for all the past years, from what I was told, and I'm not getting in between that!" Jorien held up her hands in defense, and Robin rolled her eyes. "Upsetting Professor Snape wasn't on my agenda for tonight."
"Anyway…" Cas said after a few seconds of weird silence. "My plans for tonight include lots of dancing, hopefully some spiked drinks and of course some casual snogging."
"Cas!" Robin tried to sound scolding, but her laugh betrayed her exasperated tone. "That's nowhere near appropriate behaviour for a school dance!"
"Hey, I'm no saint and I never said I was!" The girl laughed in return, and the mischief that settled on her face should've been more disconcerting to Robin than it actually was. "Who knows, perhaps we'll visit the fifth floor hallway if things go well enough."
The mention of that make-out spot alone made Robin pull a face in distaste, and she couldn't help frowning deeply at her friend. "I would like to think that Simon has a bit more class than that."
"What, and I don't?"
"You just suggested going there, without a concern in the world. So please excuse me if I question your standards."
"She's got a point." Jorien added with a snicker and a shrug, and Robin gave her a high five with a smirk. Two against one; nobody was going to the fifth floor tonight.
"Fine…" Cas groaned and crossed her arms again. "But wherever else should we go, huh? Being classy while being a student isn't all that easy if you're not entirely immune to every boy's charme like Jorien or best friends with a bloody professor like Robin! How am I supposed to have fun, can you tell me that?"
"I'm not giving you pointers on how to snog your boyfriend, Cas. Or worse." Robin replied calmly, for she couldn't decide between being flustered and laughing at the girl's exasperation. "If you guys want to sneak around, you better do it without my knowledge. You know I can't lie, and chances are high that I would have to if I knew what you're up to."
"The alcoves are said to be a pretty good spot for making out." Jorien shrugged, completely ignoring Robin's previous statement. Great… now Robin would have to actively not listen to both of them. "And there's always our room, if you wanna go all out. With some sixth year charms work, it shouldn't be too difficult to find some privacy in the dorms… And I'd planned to sleep over at Melissa's tonight anyway. To hear all about her conquests."
"I did not just hear that, nope, absolutely didn't." Robin sighed to herself under her breath and turned on her heels, deciding that it was due time to take a shower. She'd gotten through puberty without too many losses, if she'd even had one in the first place, but she would be damned if she got dragged into her friends' shenanigans now as a late payback for that. So she grabbed her things and fled the room, after triple checking that everything she needed was safely tucked under her arm. She would not be smelling like pineapple tonight.
… … …
Luckily, when she returned to her room an hour later, the conversation had moved on and the girls were now discussing Cas' options for the dress she was to wear tonight. That was a topic Robin could very well live with, could very well ignore, and so she went back to reading like she'd originally tried to do before her thoughts had strayed. With a content sigh, she stretched out on the bed and focused on the article in front of her, until a light tap on her shoulder drew her eyes up and away from the page.
"It's just ten minutes until we're leaving, so you might want to get ready now at least." Jorien said to her with an amused smile, which only broadened when Robin's jaw dropped.
"But I literally just started reading! It can't be that late!"
"Yeah, well, that was two hours ago." The girl chuckled, then turned around to Cas for her to close the zipper of her dress. Both of them were already done with their preparations, in full makeup and beautiful hairdos, just a smile away from ready to go… and Robin was still in her pajamas.
With a groan under her breath, she flipped the book shut before tossing it onto her nightstand, then she scrambled to her feet to dig out her dress from the trunk at the end of her bed. Ten minutes; ridiculous, impossible… Well, not if she screwed decency for now. Without wasting any of the precious time on contemplation, she just went with it and shed her Queen shirt first, then her flannels without a second thought. Should they see her in her knickers, who cared at this point. They'd known each other for years now. Still, what she hadn't considered was the very reason why both girls gasped now and stared at her even as she stepped into the heavy black fabric of her dress and pulled it up her body with one swift move.
Robin sighed under her breath; she could very well imagine why the girls looked at her like that. It was one of the reasons why she never changed in front of anyone, and even less let them see her in any state of undress. "It's just a scar, guys. No need to be weird about it." She stated before either of them could say anything that would make the situation even more uncomfortable. "I told you that I was stabbed last summer, it's no big deal. Not a pretty sight, I know, but it is what it is."
"Didn't that hurt?!" Cas was the first to blurt out her thoughts. "I know that you told us about it happening, but… somehow I never really thought about the implications of that."
Robin snorted at the question, while she moved her hair out of the way to let Jorien close the many tiny buttons of her dress now. "Obviously it hurt. I almost died from blood loss, that's not going to happen from just a scratch. But it healed well for what it is. The scar really is a small price for my life."
"It's so weird to think that you've gone through something like that! I mean… you're just Robin, a bookworm too smart for her own good. To think that all those adventures you told us about actually happened is like imagining Professor Sprout in a wrestling tournament." Cas gestured wildly as she spoke, and Jorien just snorted at her friend's dramatics.
Robin shrugged all of it off with a smile that was as apologetic as it was evasive, then straightened her dress and put on the one pair of more or less dressy shoes she owned; they'd be covered by the dress for the most part anyway. Then she twisted her hair up with her wand like she usually did, and that was about it. Makeup still wasn't getting anywhere near her face, or any other body part for that matter.
"Wow… You look amazing! Powerful and dark and… pretty damn hot." Jorien commented when she got a glimpse at the front of the dress as well. "Like you're the essence of night itself."
"Right! That's exactly what I said last year!" Cas grinned and nodded in agreement, while Robin simply tried not to blush. Compliments about her wit and brains were fine… compliments about her looks however were just unusual and therefore weirdly uncomfortable.
"Thanks guys, but I'm really just trying to fit in." She shrugged, and both girls frowned at her in an instant.
"Fitting in is actually the last thing this dress does for you, I think." Jorien smirked as she slung her small bag around her shoulders, seconds before all three girls made for the door. It was time they got going, after all, and thus they mostly hurried through the common room and out into the hallways. "If anything, you'll draw attention. Make an impression on some people. Seize a few hearts, and steal a soul."
Robin just snorted while rolling her eyes at the comment, but Cas caught straight on to it.
"YES! Absolutely! Robin, you've got to take advantage of those killer looks… Try to seduce the subject of your affections!" Cas beamed, in a way that spoke volumes of her excitement about meddling in foreign affairs. "Use your womanly charm and go for it! Make him fall for you!"
"I love you, Cas, but do shut up."
"She's right though!" Jorien obviously had to side with her friend, and Robin groaned under her breath upon having both girls plotting against her now. "If he doesn't find you delectable now, he's truly as undeserving of you as every other male in this castle."
"And who would you be talking about?" Snape's deep voice made all three girls jump all of a sudden, and they each spun around to stare at the dark figure in the middle of the hallway behind them. They hadn't even made it out of the dungeons yet; they should've known better than to talk this loudly.
"Professor!" Cas shrieked, eyes wide and cheeks flushed as if she'd been caught doing something terribly wrong. Robin sighed under her breath and resisted the temptation to roll her eyes; so much for getting the two sides in her life a little closer together tonight.
"Nobody!" Jorien was quick to reply, and even quicker to regain control of the situation. "We were just on our way to the ball, actually."
"Obviously." Snape and Robin replied at once, and Cas snorted in return. Oh, this was going great alright… more fuel to their flames.
"Yes, it is fairly obvious, isn't it? So we should return to doing just that, or we'll be late." Jorien flashed a quick smile, then turned on her heels and grabbed Cas by the arm to drag her along while looking back over her shoulder at Robin. "You go ahead, and we'll find the guys and meet you in the hall later, yes?" With that, the two girls disappeared down the hallway and around the next corner mere seconds later, leaving Robin frozen to her spot with a frown on her face.
"Is it me or are they being even weirder than usual?" Came Snape's dry remark from just behind her then, and Robin's eyes flew to meet his while an involuntary smile pulled at her lips.
"Oh, they're absolutely bonkers. Delusional, really, if they seriously believe that I am looking delectable to anyone tonight." She chuckled, in the honest hope that he hadn't heard more of the girls' pep talk than that. But then again, he knew how to take their ridiculous ideas and teenage delusions by now, so it really didn't matter all that much. "It would take a blind man to find that mess on my head attractive."
"If you say so." He quirked an eyebrow at her in amusement, then offered her his arm instead of the usual subtle hand on the small of her back. "Let's make an effort to make it to the ball before we miss the headmaster's great speech, shall we?"
Robin's smile brightened before she could help it, and she didn't even hesitate to accept. This was the closest thing to a date she would ever have. "We shall indeed."
They arrived in the great hall just seconds before Dumbledore rose to gain everyone's attention, and luckily therefore nobody paid them much mind. A few glances here and there, more likely than not accompanied by frowning faces that studied the sight of the two dark figures in the shadows by the doors, who looked almost indignantly bored. And boy, the headmaster could talk and talk forever if he fancied it, about courage and justice and kindness and all those nimble ideals Robin fancied a more practical approach to. But finally his words faded into applause, and the crowds began moving and talking again.
"Is it me or does the speech get more righteous every single year?" Asked Robin, while she let Snape lead her towards their usual table in the far corner, only to find a group of adults sitting there already. In immediate confusion, they halted in the middle of the room, and her eyes found his in a silent question. Good thing it had become almost a bit of a routine that whenever she failed to take notice of something that was going on around her, he would know exactly what she had missed and could fill her in.
"Dumbledore opened the ball to a larger public this year." He explained, with a quiet yet undoubtedly disdainful tone. "Parents, important families, retired professors, ministry officials and the like."
"Why on earth would he allow them at a school ball? I mean… isn't this technically supposed to be for the students' enjoyment?" Robin inquired, while they continued moving through the room in search of an empty table, but finding none.
"Remember what I told you about the reasons for bringing this ball into existence in the first place?" Snape mused, and his eyes continued scanning the room, but not for a table anymore. Robin wondered who he was searching for.
"Oh. Yes, I do remember that."
"Well, let me assure you that this decision on the headmaster's end has something to do with the very likes of it."
"Great…" Robin sighed under her breath, and finally they settled for just standing at the edge of the dancefloor like everyone else who hadn't yet put a claim on a sitting spot. Somehow, the entire thing didn't seem like a fun night with friends anymore, but the very thing that was prone to make her anxious. Too many people, too many strangers mostly, and no certain place to sit and endure it all from the ranks… this was going to be hell. Or maybe, not entirely.
"May I have the first dance?" Snape asked, just when the occasion was announced and the musicians got ready to lead the way through the night. He held a hand out to Robin, in an expression of calm neutrality rather than the usual scowl even though they were surrounded by hundreds of people. Robin's heart skipped a beat, and she had to remind herself not to grin like a fool while yet her lips parted in surprise. Had he actually just asked her to dance? With words, in public, and for the first dance out of all the possible ones tonight?
"Isn't the first dance just for important people and their dates?" She quirked an eyebrow at him in mild amusement at last, choosing humour over astonishment and tingles, which would border dangerously on allowing herself to hope again.
"It is also reserved for the professors and overall staff, and even if you rightly so keep ignoring that, this group also entails me. As it is, I do not dance with anyone but you, so they will have to bear with the two of us, or live with neither." He replied so smoothly that Robin had no time to doubt or question his words when she placed her hand in his and let him lead her onto the dancefloor. Bloody hell… now all eyes were on her indeed, and she actually couldn't care less for once.
They got into position as did the other couples around them, some of which Robin knew and some of which she hadn't seen before, but when the music started, the world faded in return and left only Robin and Snape and the music behind. This wasn't hell, she found, but rather a piece of heaven on earth. Just the two of them, moving through the open space while never once looking at anything but each other. And in the very spirit of two weeks prior, Robin yet again couldn't help the smile on her lips as she held his gaze. The only thing she missed was the warmth of his hand on her back, the almost scorching touch, as now the thick fabric of her dress dimmed it down quite a bit and left her to feel the comforting pressure of it more than the heat. How nice would it be to have his fingers dancing across her skin? To dwell in his warmth for a bit and let it burn out the cold winter within her? She could only dream.
"I believe we make quite the sight." His quiet voice broke through her haze of excited, calm ambivalence, and the world regained it's hard corners and outlines. Gone was the dream, delayed to haunt her in her sleep tonight.
"We simply know how to dance." She replied with a subtle smirk, and found that the world wasn't quite so bad either if it still entailed the two of them together. "They probably don't get to see that all too often."
"I was thinking more along the terms of our common choice of… unusual wardrobe, but yes, I agree with your assessment as well."
"What other than unusual would they have expected of the dungeon bat and the insane girl?"
"Is that how people think of us?"
"I believe so." Robin smiled, but it took everything she had not to show the true effect his words were having on her. Was she so far gone by now that all it took was an 'us' ghosting past his lips to unravel the walls that contained her emotions? It seemed so.
The music stopped then, fading off the last strings as their flowing moments came to a halt as well. Too bad it was over. But perhaps they could do this again, now that the first dance had officially proclaimed them as partners for the night. It was an official custom after all, right? Robin held onto that string of hope at least as they made their way off the dancefloor and straight towards the far corner where their usual table lay empty now. Too bad for whoever had vacated it; now it was Robin's to keep.
They sat down to face the hall as always, and while it was significantly more crowded this year than it had been in the years prior, that also gave them quite a few more victims to observe and comment on. They got exactly two hours to themselves before their social invisibility was broken by the still distant but determined appearance of Cas. In her tow the other six people, who looked a lot less eager than her to get anywhere near Snape tonight. Robin sighed to herself in mild disappointment before anyone even spoke up; she would have to make a choice between her friends and her best friend now, and she hated that beyond measure. Why did life have to be so unfair at times?
"I know what you're thinking." Snape said then, quietly even though the ground of people still had to come anywhere near the table. "And you shouldn't be concerned, I understand the problem fairly well. I will leave if they wish to spend time with you."
He was already up on his feet and ready to just walk away when Robin caught his hand, and held onto it so tightly that his eyebrows lifted up when he looked back down at her.
"Don't think it's a decision I want to make, okay?" She asked with a sadness she didn't bother to hide. "It's not a decision I can make, actually, and I simply would've told them to deal with it or be the ones to leave if they've got a problem with your company."
"I know. And since it isn't a decision you should have to make, I made it for you now, by offering to leave."
"I don't want to spend the evening without you…" The words spilled past Robin's lips without any restraint now, and she was glad for that. It made the corners of his lips curl upwards for a fleeting moment at least.
"In that case, I might have to come and rescue you from their fangs in two hours for another dance. Good solution?"
"Make that one hour instead and we have a good solution indeed." She smiled up at him, and only now realised that she was still clasping his hand like a lifeline. Reluctantly but necessarily she finally let go. "I can't have four teen girls and three boys around me for much longer than that."
"As you wish." He returned a knowing not-smirk for a second, then turned on his heels and disappeared in the crowds just when Cas reached the table.

Sweet Temptations
Tumblr media
Izuku Midoriya X Reader
Summary: The rain certainly provides the perfect atmosphere to nap in.
WARNINGS!: none
Category: Fluff
Word Count: 3.8k
A/N: It was raining a few days ago when I was taking a nap, so I decided to conjure up a self indulgent fic >~<
Just To Clarify:
Izuku is your fiance
you both live together in a house in the mountains
commute to work is probably a pain but oh well
The sprinkle of rain pitter-pattered gently on the roof of your shared home, dribbling off of the sides and thumping against the flat, smooth rocks strategically placed beneath.
Drip.
Drop.
Drip.
Though it was faint, the splashing of its drizzle in the koi pond just beside you could still be heard, even through the paper shoji dividing the two seperate spaces. The fresh yet blissfully familiar earthy scent of it seeped in through an open, wood-framed window not too far from where you sat, rain splattering noisily onto the vibrant red maple leaves just outside of it. The sweet sound molded together with the soft jingle of chimes swaying in the light breeze to create a beautiful melody that soothed your soul more-so than any show ever dreamed of doing.
Downpour was always best in the spring, the cool atmosphere welcoming it with loving arms. It always gave you a good excuse to stay bundled up on the plush couch, sipping at a freshly made cup of herbal tea.
The wide TV just in front of you idly played something you couldn’t quite remember the name of, becoming more of background noise as your eyes always seemed to travel back to the droplets lazily flowing down the foggy glass of the window, dripping down onto the wet frame.
Surely the water would seep inside soon, traveling slowly down the wall just to puddle on the tatami mats, but the fresh air it provided was too good to pass up for something so mundane.
Besides, it would take a long time for that to actually occur.
Days like this were the ones you found yourself loving the most.
A day to relax your bones stiffened by adult duties, letting the sounds of nature wash over your tired being.
A day to not have to worry about anything.
No responsibilities, chores are already taken care of, work all done.
There was absolutely nothing of any importance that needed your immediate attention.
The lack of work wasn’t the only good thing on this fine day, though.
It was the peace and quiet.
A perk of moving into a home a ways away from the bustling city was the relative stillness, as well as the much-needed privacy.
That, and being surrounded by wildlife.
The place was a traditional Japanese home, or similar to it as the realtor had said. Surrounded by trees, flowers, well-placed stones, and babbling brooks.
Living in a house like this was always a dream.
Perhaps thats why you were able to convince your lovely fiance to live here.
Tatami floor mats cushioned your near every step, the woodwork filling the interior the house becoming a sight for sore eyes every time you happened to notice the beautiful craftsmanship.
Everything was pristine.
New, yet held that comforting sense of tradition you always wanted.
A place where you could build a life with your handsome husband-to-be.
Yawning, you placed your tea cup onto the coffee table before stretching out on the couch you had lounged around on for far too many hours, arms rising high above your head. A satisfied groan left your lips the moment your back popped, the sickening crack being far louder than you had originally anticipated.
Boy, was your posture in true shambles.
The bone king quaked at your very feet.
You snorted at the thought, hopping off and stretching your legs out for a moment.
A quick press of the button turned the forgotten television off with a jingly bleep.
No point keeping it on when a new quest had opened up for your curious soul.
The quest of: Finding Izuku and annoying him.
Honestly, who would you be if you spent too long willingly away from him?
His sheer presence was far too calming and therapeutic for you to ever even consider such a foolish option.
Or perhaps you were just as love-struck with him as you were when you first had met.
Besides, knowing him, your big man probably desired your company as much as you suddenly did his.
So, grabbing your cup of tea, you slid your tan slippers on over your Christmas-themed fuzzy socks, wrapping your cozy (F/C) blanket around your shoulders before setting out on your little adventure.
It was around noon, the sun high in the sky shining as brightly as it could behind a plethora of darkened clouds. He always seemed to like reading around this time, his internal clock making his fingers itch for something to grab and run his eyes over.
Oftentimes his fingers swept through news articles on his phone or turned a delicate page of a random book that previously caught his brilliant green gaze at that old book store at the edge of the city that felt, in many ways, like a home you never knew you needed.
The store's calming ambience was the key inspiration for the fairy lights and various decorations scattered about your home, especially that kotatsu that sat in the middle of your living room.
Your feet padded gently on the tatami as you made your way around the house, first checking his little office hidden away in the back. It was hard not to cringe at the state of it. Papers were scattered everywhere and overflowing from the poor trash bin, random maps sprawled out on the desk, notebooks filled with notes and ideas to the left of his old, squeaky chair. It was a mess. Did he ever clean this place?
You were tempted to do so yourself for a split second, before realizing everything was in a specific place for a reason. A reason unknown to you, but known to him, as he explained sorrowfully the one night you did clean his office. He was a messy boy, forever and always. At least with his work. His mind ran too fast for his hands to keep up half the time, resulting in.. chaotic messes only he could comprehend.
Blinking, you slid the door shut with your foot, sipping at your drink as you carried on your search.
The house was quiet, save for the ever-present pattering of rain against it, giving no real indications of his true whereabouts.
Typically you could rely on his persistent muttering to swiftly locate him, but today was as silent as ever. No doubt the atmosphere got to him as well, making him want to relax somewhere and listen closely to the soft rainfall whilst doing whatever he pleased.
Humming, you checked each and every room you came across upstairs first, looking for the man you loved oh-so-much.
As time ticked on and minutes flew by, you found yourself getting pouty, fingers thrumming against the now empty mug as you continued searching.
Where on earth could he be? Sure, the house was a bit big, but you had already managed to cover the entire upstairs floor and the majority of the bottom. Calling out to him would be easier, he’d no doubt reply in that cheery tone that graced his voice whenever he spoke to you, but you wanted to find him on your own. Surprise him to a degree.
His senses were sharp, and he’d hear you the moment you came a few meters near him -  no matter how quiet you were, but that wasnt going to stop you from trying to surprise him.
Plus, calling out his name didnt quite seem appropriate. The still, chilly air would be ruined by your voice, and you couldn’t help but subconsciously want this search to go on until you yourself found him with your own eyes, and not use his voice as an aid.
After checking a few more rooms, you sighed heavily, head thumping against the wall as your resolution crumbled beneath your feet.
Was it really worth it? Being silent?
You weren’t even a ninja or some vigilante, you were just a bakery owner who never needed to sneak around, especially their own living space.
With a huff of aggravation, you walked to the kitchen. Holding an empty mug was pointless and served no purpose other than getting in your way, so naturally you decided to get another drink.
Oh, what to choose?
There were so many options to choose from other than tea.
Well, not really. More like, an endless amount of tea and three other things. Probably.
Coffee? No, no, even if you were feeling a bit sleepy, now was not the time for a caffeine high.
Oh!
What about hot chocolate?
Yes! Absolutely!
This cold weather certainly called for a nice, hot cup of a sugary sweet, chocolatey drink to warm your tummy and renew your resolve.
As you were mixing the cocoa powder into your warmed up cup of milk, watching with childish glee as the dark brown swirled with white for a moment until it mixed into a nice tawny brown that reminded you of delicious brownies, a distant noise caught your attention.
Your head instantly perked up, eyes flying up to peer out the large window in front of you.
Rain continued to pour softly down onto the wet and muddy ground, momentary water halos forming as they splatted down onto the darkened pathement.
A car zoomed past, throwing muddied water up onto the far away end of your driveway.
Ah.
So it was a car.
It was hard not to feel disappointed at that, partially because you had hoped it was Izuku giving away his location by accident.
Though he could be quite loud at times, that man had the power to be quieter than a kid told to wake their parent up in a bit to do chores.
With a discontented sigh, you placed the spoon into the sink, sprinkling some tiny marshmallows into your drink before walking off to continue the man hunt.
There weren’t too many places left inside for you to check, and you managed to do so in only a minute or two.
Truly, you were dumbfounded.
Where could he possibly be?
Did he take his car and go somewhere?
No, no, he would have told you if that were the case, and you would have seen him exit the front entrance as well.
So where?
You stopped in your tracks, being slapped upside the head with sudden realization.
Of course he wouldnt be inside huddled away like a lonely hermit on a day like this, no, he’d enjoy it! Breathe in the earthy fresh air as it enveloped him.
He loved the rain far more than you did, so it made sense.
You smiled, taking a big sip of your hot chocolate as you suddenly knew exactly where he was.
It was hard to say you didn’t feel like a complete idiot for missing something so simple as you walked back to the living room.
There was always one place he liked to hang out at during a nice day.
On the engawa hovering over the koi pond.
You stopped just in front of the shoji screen, excitement already sparking in your system.
You rocked back and forth on your feet as you took a breath to calm your racing heart, the goofiest smile etched upon your face.
Your fingers dipped into the slots used to open the door,
One.
Two.
Three!!
“BOO!” You screeched like a banshee down at the man relaxing on a cushion by the edge of the wood, glasses tipping off his nose as his focused eyes stayed glued to the book in his hands.
“Ahh!” He playfully shouts in response, a smirk upon his lips as he notices your exasperated state slinking down onto your knees on the polished floor with a look of utter defeat upon your cute face
“I was trying to scare you..!”
Came your complaint, eyes boring into his own as you pouted.
“I was scared. I screamed!” Izuku chuckles, shoulders shaking as he couldnt control that goofy smile of his.
If he was trying to look convincing, he was failing horribly.
You huffed at his antics, he was far too cute to even pretend to be mad at.
You should have known better, though, trying to scare the number one hero in his own home was like trying to scare someone who knew you were coming from a mile away.
Plus, you knew that before you even realized where he was.
It was to be expected of such a talented guy.
After sliding the shoji shut to keep the warmer air in, you crawled over to him. His upper back rested comfortably on a wooden support beam as his legs sprawled out in front of him, a leather book perched on his lap.
“So, what are you reading?” from the looks of it, it seemed to be an older book of sorts, the pages a yellowish-white and the cover boring no text.
You were now sitting beside him on your knees in what would’ve been shoulder to shoulder if he wasn’t so much more taller than you, sipping at your drink once more.
It was simply too good to resist.
“It was described to me as a ‘classic’ at the store. It’s a book filled with multiple fairy tales, each having a sort of.. theme or moral told in ink at the end. There's got to be at least twenty or so in here..” he spoke with enthusiasm, eagerly showing you the one he was currently reading.
“‘The Little Mermaid’?”
It grew increasingly rare for children to know the tale of The Little Mermaid, or at least, the adaptation of it that was shown on a screen. It was a fairly old film, one you remember your grandparents speaking briefly about with joy, but still a very beloved one. A joyous little tale of a red-haired mermaid seeking the love of a prince. How cute.
But why on Earth was he reading a children's book, then?
Not that you’d ever judge him, it was just that his taste was generally more.. Sophisticated. To a degree, of course.
“Yes. But this is the original one. The true tale of ‘The Little Mermaid’, the one filled with pain and gore.”
“P-pain.. and gore?” Well now that certainly didn't sound like a children's book. Is that why it's called a classic?
He hums, thumbing through a few pages, “It’s kind of inspiring. Each step she took felt like she was walking on glass, but she never gave up on being with her prince. I think, at least, I haven’t really finished it yet.”
“Are all the originals that horrifying?” you looked down at the book with disbelief, certainly not expecting each dream-like fairy tail to revolve around a horror story.
“Some are worse, some are better, but it’s a nice read.” he shrugged, going back to his original place in the book and nudging his glasses back up on his nose.
They always did make him look so gosh darn cute.
His eyesight was as perfect as the sky was blue, but for reading? He needed glasses. They were those cheap kinds found at bookstores, but damn if those black frames didn't pull his handsome face together.
He looked so attractive, even in this dulled lighting.
You’d expect someone to look gloomy when it rains, the shadows casted by the caliginous sky and stormy clouds bringing out the sadness buried deep within someone's soul and causing them to frown. Something mystical yet scientific. The rain always brought misfortune and sorrow, but Izuku has and forever will be that sun that never stops shining brightly no matter what. That optimism despite even the toughest situations always affected the way he looked, and boy did he always look irresistible. Even in this rainy overcast, he still smiled and sparkled with enthusiasm
Just another thing to love endlessly about him
You couldnt tell, but you were currently staring at him with lovestruck eyes and the dopiest smile that ever existed plastered on your chocolate coated lips.
Izuku found himself grinning along with you as his face stayed forward, peaking at you from the corner of his eye.
Your mug of hot chocolate was seemingly forgotten as you hugged his large, muscular arm, an act he certainly didnt mind if the light flush on his cheeks were anything to go by.
“You’ve got a chocolate moustache, princess.” The boy pointed out, lips pressing into a thin line to push down any giggles rumbling in his chest.
“W-what! Really?” oh, how embarrassing. How the hell did you get it on yourself? You weren’t a kid, only kids got those, right? Oh dear.
Just as you were about to wipe it off with your blanket still draped around you, Izuku turned, gently cupping your cheek and gazing deeply into your wide, (E/C) eyes.
Oh man.
His eyes.
Up close, they were the most beautiful thing you ever did see.
Age certainly did affect them, but not in a negative way. No, they were still as captivating as ever, but now there were tiny specks of brown you’d only truly see if you were this close to him, but god did they bring those eyes together. It was like staring into a forest coated in morning dew and shimmering with the blinding light of the sun.
Addicting. You’d certainly be the first to say you could stare into them for hours and never get bored.
“Here, let me.” his tone was softer than ever, yet held a bite of playfulness.
Eyes slipping closed, you nuzzled your rosey cheek into his scarred palm, an act the man you loved couldn't help but find utterly adorable and innocent.
Honestly, you were expecting him to wipe it away with his thumb or something, but the moment you felt something warm and wet lick across the top of your lip, you erupted with laughter.
“Eww! Izukuu!” you nearly choked on the words from how hard you found yourself laughing, weakly pushing his face away.
“What do you mean ew~” That teasing tone he always seemed to use on you during moments like these resurfaced, “i’ve done much ‘grosser’ things to you than just licking your lip, darling.”
Face burning from embarrassment, you whined loudly as he gingerly pulled you into his lap, your thighs on the sides of his own, placing the book down beside him just so that he could hug you close to him.
It was impossible not to relax instantly into his comforting embrace, the blanket previously doing next to nothing to protect you from this chilly air, but his body was like a heater in itself.
So, so warm.
“You’re forgiven.” you mumble against his neck, unintentionally sending sweet shivers down his spine.
“You s-sound tired..” the bashful man stuttered in that cute way he always seemed to do when flustered, hand idly rubbing up and down your blanket clad back.
“Mm.. just a little.” You didn't even realize how tired you were until you had a chance to sink into his warmth. Perhaps searching all over the house for the past half hour wore you out more than you’d like to admit.
Plus.. the calming rain certainly wasnt helping.
It was much more intense out here than it was when inside, the splatter of it hitting the pond not as muffled as before, mainly due to the fact that the pond was so close you could reach out and touch it if you so desired.
Which you didn’t.
Because then you’d get wet.
The sheer thought of getting cold water on your warm skin made you cringe, huffing through your nose just to nuzzle it into the crook of his neck.
Breathing in his scent was like being slapped with all the good things in your life.
He always had a bit of a musky scent. It was hard to tell if it came from his sweat or just natural scent, either way- it wasn’t all that bad when paired with his shampoo and conditioner.
Always one to use, for lack of better words, green scents. Planty scents. Scents that made you just want to bury your nose in his dreamily soft, fluffy green hair and stay there all day, carding your fingers through the locks just to hear his satisfied hum.
In a short conclusion, not only did he radiate manliness, but he also smelled manly.
Isn’t that what his friend, Red Riot, would say? Manly?
It was hard to describe him as anything but that.
He certainly grew up quite a bit after his years at UA, growing taller and becoming even more buff as he got to work on the field more. Age 18 was certainly a convenient time for him to have a growth spurt. And here he was now, 25, littered with scars you always pressed loving kisses to whenever you got the chance, and as handsome as ever.
But he knew you liked his scent, because you would often tell him that. Especially when he got out of the shower. It was actually hard for him to get dressed because you were clinging onto him, enjoying the lovely smells as he desperately clutched at his towel and whined.
It was very easy for him to compare you to a baby sloth, something that always clung to another. It was cute, and he always adored the attention, something he lacked growing up.
Even now, he knew exactly what you were thinking as you sighed happily. Your body seemed to slump against his, fitting into his arms like the puzzle piece he had always been looking for. He’d be damned if he ever lost it.
Pressing a tender kiss against your temple, he smiled the moment he noticed your breathing slowly getting deeper.
“Falling asleep, hmm?” he whispered, “I guess you do nap around this time.”
As expected, he didn't quite get a response other than a simple hum.
You really were too cute.
But he couldn't blame you anyway, it was the perfect weather and place to take a nap.
It wasn't often he was able to nap with you, so you must be inwardly jumping for joy as his heartbeat and soft thumps of rain against the roof lulled you to sleep.
You always felt so.. protected and safe in his hold. And that wasn’t just because he was a hero, no, it was something more primal, like whenever you were in his arms you were always drowning in the feeling of love and safety.
Maybe it was something more than that, but you were far too tired to actually come up with any logical explanations.
So instead, you finally let yourself drip into dreamland in the warm embrace of your beloved, letting gentle chimes swaying in the wind and the relaxing sound of rain be your guide.
And Izuku?
Well, he went back to reading his book, using your lovely ass as a place to rest it.

Heya! How are you? I hope you're doing well. I recently stumbled upon your account and I love the way you do your matchups. So I hope I could request one. I checked, but I may be wrong so if they're closed I apologize, and please just ignore this. I'd like a BNHA matchup.
I go by any pronouns and the person you match me up with can be of any gender. I'm a Gemini sun, Virgo moon and rising, Aries mars, Cancer venus, and mercury. I'm an INFJ, my enneagram is 6w5 and tritype 629. My Hogwarts house is Ravenclaw, my Greek god parents are Athena and Hades.
As for my physical description, I'm 162cm tall (5'2 or 5'3) and average built. I have curly long hair, that is dyed black on top and grey underneath, it was naturally brown, brown eyes, big lips, pale complexion. I wear glasses and have a nose piercing.
I can't choose an aesthetic so pretty much every time you see me I'll be in a different one, if I had to pick favorites it would be dark academia and grunge. I don't often wear that much makeup, mostly because I'm not very good at it and I lose my patience easily. I have both of my ears pierced in three places and love wearing lots of earrings. I also love rings and bracelets.
I speak 6 languages (Serbian, English, French, Russian, Japanese, and German) and hope to learn more. Languages are one of the things that I am very interested in and hope to pursue during my life, others being psychology and acting. Though pretty much everything is interesting to me and if it was up to me I would be everything at once. I love learning and exploring, new experiences are a constant must. Whether it's new people, new places, new food, new words, anything.
I'm not currently doing any sports but I am still physically active and keep myself in shape. I loved reading ever since I was a little kid and the passion never stopped. I love classics, horror, adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, mystery... I also love reading mangas and watching anime, any genre, I just prefer them to be shorter rather than have over 300 episodes. Pretty much all of the time I am listening to music, my music taste varies from my mood so I just have a bunch of Spotify playlists. I also love watching movies and shows but lately, my time has been occupied with other things so I haven't been catching up.
I am the eldest of three children, and I am not at all in a good relationship with my family. I am at the same time a very insecure yet confident person. I have ADHD, anxiety, and depression, but I am trying to be better. I do great in school and have always been under pressure to perform perfectly.
I don't have a lot of friends and I don't make them easily but I am extremely loyal to those I have and would do anything for them. People have said that I am a very comforting person, and that they always feel like they can trust me and talk to me about anything (which makes me extremely happy) and that I give good advice (would be nice if I ever listened to any of those). Kinda forgot to put it up there but I love writing, I wrote two books and a couple of stories that I will probably never do anything with, and lots of songs.
Once I relax I am a very talkative person, like once I start I just don't stop, which many people described as extremely annoying (totally not one of my biggest insecurities), I know a lot of things in most topics and I love sharing it with other people.
I know how to ride a car and a motorcycle tho I don't have a driver's license for either. I love cooking and baking and I consider myself quite good at it. I have a lot of fictional crushes, so if you'd be with me you'd have to deal with that lol.
I need people that share at least some of my interest and that are capable of keeping long conversations. I love having discussions and playful arguments. Also, a person that is fine with us being in silence, each doing their own thing but still together without it being boring or awkward, just enjoying the other's presence without there being much done. I'd like them to be curious and optimistic, ready to explore the world. Someone I could trust.
I hope that this is enough, but I just know that once I send I'll remember something else I could have said. But anyway, thank you!
// Hello ! Honestly, even though we never met, I felt so flattered to hear you like my writing, because you seem like a very talented person, anyways,,, here’s your matchup ! I hope you like this!//
WARNING SPOILER SEASON 4 (I didn’t know which season you were at so I did two characters !)
Shoto Todoroki
Shoto will seem dull and cold like his at first, like his quirk. But like his quirk, he will show his comfy, approachable self when he trust you enough.
You both started talking to each other after being in teamwork together. Shoto was so surprised when you told him you knew more than two languages. He knows Japanese and English, but would actually love to learn others too.
He has good grades, yes because his father pressures him to have them, but also because he likes to learn.
Oh, trust me he understand family issues. He will try his best to tell his advices to you, but he’s not as good as you are. He will comfort you, though. Give you hugs when you need or simple taps on the shoulder. He will NEVER judge you and will try his best to help you.
New experiences are a must to him too. He grew up in a very strict environment, so he never could enjoy what normal children had. Or what normal people do. He will follow you everywhere and find it fun, no matter what you guys do.
He loves your writing and even asks you some advice on his, because he actually really enjoys reading and writing but never could exploit it because of, you know, Endeavour.
Shoto can be very talkative too. He loves when you’re talking for hours to him, he loves hearing your stories and will always smile when he sees you in that state, because you seem so passionate about it it gives him butterflies.
He will try to keep to convo going, yeah because he loves when you talk, but because you’re really interesting to him.
He never watched any movies, so you can have your fun showing your favorites with him.
He loves every aesthetic you’re in. For him, it’s a way to show how talented and creative you can be. Himself has different aesthetic and one of his favorites would be Dark Academia, you both match !
Shoto also needs silent moments, alone moments to charge his social battery. Though his arms will always be open to talk and if it’s been too long for him, he will maybe knock on your door of your room and ask to at least be with you in silence.
But he will always respect your boundaries and will never judge you.
Mirio Togata
Even though you both probably ‘seem’ different, you both actually have a lot in common !
Mirio always liked to approach others, so he definitely was the first that tried to approach you with his shiny personality, though, he didn’t want to be annoying with you.
After talking for a while, that’s when you learn you have a lot in common ! Such as the love to learn. He was so invested in when you told him that you knew more than 2 languages, so he started to learn one himself !
Mirio joined Night Eye’s agency for that, to learn. He will find everything you’re talking about and share his interests too while doing so.
He loves new experiences too ! He’s not a difficult person, you could literally tell him that you will visit another country and his stuff would already be prepared for that.
You both have different clothing styles, he’s more into the bright colors while you’re (maybe) more into darker ones, but differences make a good match too ! He loves every clothing style you’re into everyday, he will even accept changing his style from time to time too just to match with you.
He doesn’t really have a genre for movies and shows neither. Whatever you’re watching, he’ll watch it with you. He is pretty occupied too but the only thing he has to do is just get his head through the wall and watch it with you, hoping to make you laugh or at least snort in the process.
Mirio gets that. He’s friend with the most insecure guy in almost the entire school after all. Though, when you feel insecure, that’s when he’ll ask you if you need help, a little boost or just simply talk about something else. He will do whatever you need.
And when you feel confident, he’ll cheer you on as much as he can because he knows these little moments of confidence is important, he wants them to be more present. He also thinks you’re really strong mentally for your family problems and that’s what he admires so much about you.
You are a very comforting person. Togata doesn’t mind talking about his problems, such as when he lost his power, he knew it wouldn’t stop him but he felt so guilty and so bad about it. When you started to comfort him, that’s when his smile got back, because you’re really good at it.
Do you really think you can talk too much with Mirio ? He will listen to you and always have cute/happy reactions to what you say. ‘It’s so cool ! Woah ! Good job ! Haha really ?!’ while his mind is blown.
You can’t talk too much with him, because himself talk way too damn much in the first place and will NEVER shut you down for talking for hours. He’ll be so happy to see you like this, because he will knoe you trust him enough for that.
He’ll live with the hours spent on talking about your fictional crushes. He loves when you talk about them and Togata is not the type to get jealous about these things, he trusts you and knows that you love him. And he loves you too !
You know damn well it’s okay with Mirio to talk with him for hours and keep long convos. But he knows to leave you alone when you need to.
His best friend is an introvert and he knows that people need to charge their battery too. He won’t be annoying and will wait for you to talk to him again. Okay, maybe sometimes he will say a few jokes because he miss you, but that’s it, promise. He won’t keep the convos long when you don’t need them.
Mirio loves learning, loves new experiences, will always try to cheer you up and will also leave you alone whenever you need it !
