chewing on big 3 kids being capable of absolutely devastating natural disasters and apocalypse-level outbursts of power.
Percy who creates hurricanes complete with lightning that pummel titans and flooding and whirlpools that can trap god-powered crocodile kaijus. Earthquakes that erupt volcanoes. Hazel who sunk an entire small island entirely on her own with her final breath, against giants and a primordial goddess of the earth.
If Nico dramatically wilts plants and cracks the ground when he's mildly stressed, and disintegrates enemies down to their skeletons with a single touch or rips their souls out of their still-living bodies, and can command armies of the undead, what happens if he tries to cause destruction? Even outside of total zombie apocalypse or insta-killing a crowd, he's shown enough geokinesis to absolutely be capable of the same destruction Percy and Hazel can manifest.
What about Jason? He can control the winds and storms. There's no way he can't create the most destructive tornadoes with casual effort that he can never justify using for the collateral damage they'd cause. With a single thought he can rip up a town and launch the remnants 50 miles out. (Jason in the center of a Dead Man Walking tornado, vortexes responding to his movements like an avatar...)
And what can anyone do to combat it? How can you fight the wind lifting everything you know and love into the sky, or floods sweeping you away, or the ground giving way beneath you? The Big 3 kids are scary because they are forces of nature, and their whims are the only thing preventing you from witnessing that at any given moment.

Hyperion, Titan of Heavenly Light.
Tumblr media
The six elder titan sons were responsible for creating the first race of man. Hyperion gave this race the gift of eyes and sight, but at what cost?

If I were to, hypothetically, burn down that pine tree planted on halfblood hill, what do you reckon would happen?

i feel like pjo fans are still getting used to the idea that pjo is an actual show that’s gaining more popularity than the actual fan base

Hyperion
Ok so maybe this is like a fun fact or common knowledge but I just found out the tallest tree in the world is named Hyperion??
Tumblr media
It's a Coast Redwood in California named after the titan from Greek Mythology.
And I was just vaguely thinking, 'wasn't one of the titans in PJO turned into a tree?' and lo and behold, it's Hyperion. I MEAN
WOW. Also he's turned into a maple tree in the book not a Redwood tree, but the point still stands.
(See what I did there? :D)

On the Wiki it says "While in Tartarus, Iapetus's silver hair glows in the dark." and all i can see is Hyperion messing with Iapetus' Hair out of boredom and it started glowing lightly
Hyperion accidentally turned Iapetus into a glowstick and Iapetus only let it go because Krios loved it.

Was there anything special you had to do to be able to sell the comic and other fan art? Like did you have to get Rick’s permission or what?
obsessed with the idea that i may have personally spoke to rick riordan but no.
in general IP holders turn a blind eye to fanart because the spread and sale of fanart is mutually beneficial for fanartists and IP holders. fanart can act as free marketing as well as encourage audience engagement while discouraging fanart often turns people off to media. this is why you can go to conventions and see swaths of people selling fanart, and is also why fanzines are so popular. however this is not typically the case for written fanfiction.
the reason i did end up selling physical copies of sohae is because in general it shares more common ground with fanart and fanzines than with fanfiction (because really the only overlap btwn sohae and fanfic is that it has a structured narrative and only one contributor. as someone familiar with zine culture even outside of fandom, those are not really disqualifying)

The Lightning Thief
Rick Riordan
Publisher: Disney Hyperion Genre: middle grade, fantasy Year: 2005
Tumblr media
I distinctly remember buying my first copy of The Lightning Thief at the Scholastic Book Fair in third grade. It was 2005, mini erasers, scented pencils, and grippers were all the rage in elementary school. The cover looked a lot different then, all white with lemon-yellow Word Art for the title and an ugly lightning bolt across the cover with various monster from the book clawing out. I still have it. It's one of my prized possessions.
Reading this again as an adult is such a different experience, I almost regret it. There is so much nostalgia associated with this story. Honestly there's nothing I can say about it that hasn't been said before. All I can do is convey how I relate to this story.
The book is undeniably funny. I remembered that as a kid. It also reminds me how much I love chapter titles and they should come back, and not just for middle-grade. The plot moves extremely quickly, it's a little bit jarring to my adult 27 year-old brain. Then of course is the gut reaction of "I'm calling CPS on Chiron these are CHILDREN and you sent them across-country ALONE your camp counselor license has been REVOKED." Also my perspective on Poseidon has changed. Before I understood. He's a god. He's all-powerful. Now, I'm like "You don't want to be his dad? Too bad, I'm his dad now! We're going fishing!" Metaphysical powers do not excuse shitty parenting.
I'm excited to continue rereading this series because I expect I will relate to older-Percy a lot more. I remember that they do get a little more serious as they go on. But even in this one, the fact that Percy's mom was abused. And they literally had a conversation about murdering Percy's stepfather. I mean, luckily Sally didn't make him do it, but still. Also I remember Luke's betrayal being so dark and harsh, but on the other end, I think he's so lame for having a nemesis who is twelve years old when he's like 20. That's embarrassing, dude.
Other than that, I just want to reminisce. These books aren't for me anymore. I grew out of them. I will always cherish these books for the wonder they brought to Little Casey, but Old Casey can't quite suspend her disbelief to sink back into that world, and it makes me a a bit sad. I guess that's the nature of growing up. But I hope this story remains just as magical for all the new Little Caseys out there.
