So much has happened in these last 30 years, I met R.L. Stine and Jennifer Allison. Lost all of my grandparents, my 3 dogs. My aunt had cancer but is doing good now. My cousins have children now. 2008 was my best year. I started watching Flashpoint when I was 14 in 2008, and in 2012, I made a bunch of friends because of it and joined social media. I own over 311 R.L. Stine books and a bunch of other random books. Have reviewed over 122 books, and beta read over 53 books. My name is in a few. Started watching the amazing race and dancing with the stars early on in their runs and still watch them. I'm officially older than Google. How strange is that to say, I survived y2k, hurricane sandy, the blackout of 2004. I remember the miracle on the Hudson, September 11th, the space shuttle columbia, hurricane Katrina, sandy hook, just to name a few.

Denise and Fran Collin met the warm, creative, generous, and kind Jason, who owns and curates the store @seaandgreenhome in Cambria with his wife Rebecca Biskaduros, passionate about sustainability and protecting the environment. Artists and philanthropists at heart, they lovingly welcome visitors to their shop, a space of beauty, community building, and art that seeks to empower all people. . Originally calling New Jersey home, “After superstorm Sandy they were able to raise over $23,000 for Shores United Relief Foundation through the sale of their restore heart ornaments, which they made with reclaimed Sandy damaged wood. They also made one of a kind furniture and accessories out of damaged boardwalk wood to sell for fundraising for those affected by Sandy”; during COVID, they sold art made by family, friends, and local makers to support the artist community (See about section of their website). . Visit Jason and Rebecca at their Cambria store: 2380 Main Street, Cambria; or on their website: www.sea-n-green.com . Thank you for carrying the light. Please continue to shine, and acknowledge when others illuminate your path. . Giver of the pin @collin_denise . Together in the Storm: Community Responses to Climate Change Disasters
Tumblr media
Hurricane Sandy hit New York and New Jersey in October of 2012, devastating many communities. Though these areas were prone to Northeastern storms, Sandy exceeded expectations in the worst possible way, becoming at the time the second most costly US hurricane after Katrina. John Spodofora, Mayor of Stafford Township, New Jersey, said, “I don’t think anyone thought what happened would happen, and we were devastated. Even though we had a plan, the plan couldn’t meet the horrors of that storm.”
In the face of such devastation, it was up to communities to come together and help one another. However, community camaraderie in such situations is often not as simple as believed. According to the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), communities who are already connected are the most likely to not only survive a disaster, but also rebuild their community the most quickly and completely. Larger organizations like LISC or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) rely on communities to assist in their aid efforts. As LISC member Susan Fitter Harris reflects on Hurricane Sandy, she writes:
"When residents are connected to one another, they look out for one another. They know where the senior citizens live, the single moms with small children, the neighbors with physical challenges. They can be invaluable in helping first responders know where to look and for whom, and in making sure that emergency relief resources get to those who need them."
Community connectedness is particularly valuable for low-income groups who may not have the resources to come back from a disaster on their own. When studying low-income neighborhoods in Chicago, researchers from the Center for American Progress found that “socially cohesive communities in which people are engaged in social or civic events enjoyed increased resilience against extreme weather events.”
Of course, we also hear stories of “spontaneous volunteers” who come out of the woodwork to help those they have never met - those who still had power during Hurricane Sandy and shared charging stations outside their homes; the O’Neill sisters who created community relief efforts despite the government telling them to pack up and go home. It seems that people will come together in times of trouble regardless, but perhaps creating tighter bonds between our neighbors can aid in this process.

Remnants Of Hurricane Sandy - BoardWalk To Nowhere At NY Home Beach - IMRAN™ I stayed home on Long Island, New York during hurricane Sandy several years ago. It had ripped my community’s boardwalk and marina. Debris and even pieces of docks, decks, and boardwalks had been carried by the storm. We were in the straight line of the hurricane track. But we got extremely lucky to survive when it changed course almost 90 degrees. But it decimated parts of New Jersey that year. This is a remnant from those events, towards the far backend of the Heron Pointe private beach. I felt the black and white picture conveyed that story better. © 2022 IMRAN™ #NewYork #LongIsland #Patchogue #EastPatchogue #HeronPointe #IMRAN #beach #PrivateProperty #PrivateBeach #RealEstate #lifestyle #memories #autobiography #hurricane #HurricaneSandy #time #boardwalk (at East Patchogue, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkUO8QOsesj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

6 year anniversary of #HurricaneSandy and I dug up these pictures including this one of the destruction around our area. Power out for 8 days with a 6 week old baby in my arms and 2 tiny boys itching to get out of the house or do something but the conditions were too unsafe. We had to “trunk or treat” that year as cars lined up on one road with candy in the trunks for the little ones since it was too unsafe to walk from door to door with power lines everywhere. My husband and neighbor worked for hours to get our cars out so we could get some gas for our generator and food for the family. It could’ve been a lot worse but it certainly wasn’t easy and we got the best of it. Thinking of all those who have suffered from all the recent hurricanes and those still rebuilding and grieving the loss of loved ones from all natural disasters! https://www.instagram.com/p/BphQ2ckABe-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1vnjv4brckebc

Lockdown for Mice
The Elders When Hurricane Sandy hit the Eastern United States in 2012, the seaside town where my husband’s parents lived lost power. They survived weeks without heat in November and December, thanks to a gas range that warmed the kitchen and let them cook soup and oatmeal. His parents were in their advanced 80s. We flew from the West Coast as soon as it was safe to travel, in the midst of the…

Today marks our 10 year anniversary! On March 2, 2011, @jr launched the Inside Out Project, during his first TED Talk. Over the past decade, more than 400,000 people across 138 countries have participated in the Inside Out Project. The Project has reached all 5 continents, with over 2,000 Group Actions created. These Group Actions have addressed a wide range of topics such as: diversity, community, feminism, racism, climate change, education, children’s rights, and art to name just a few!.  The Inside Out Project was meant to last only a year, but 10 years later, we are still here! We are still encouraging people around the globe to raise awareness about something they believe in, using the power of paper and glue. Now it’s your turn to gather your community in a safe manner, capture their portraits, and keep turning the world Inside Out! Featured here (from left to right) are actions that took place in: 2011, Israel and Palestine; 2012, New Zealand; 2013, USA; 2014, France; 2015, Cameroon; 2016, Italy; 2017, India; 2018, Spain; 2019, Colombia and 2020, Switzerland.   #insideoutproject #jr #iop10 #arabspring  #indigenous #creativity #hurricanesandy #pantheon #youngleaders #diversity #picaso #art #awareness #visibility #intergenerational #respect  #education https://www.instagram.com/p/CL7MOgdD75V/?igshid=1g64er3d4weby
