Director Sammi Cannold is a rising star in New York. The young Harvard alum gained attention and acclaim for her inventive, site-specific revivals; she worked as an associate director with Tony-winning visionaries Diane Paulus and Rachel Chavkin; and this past fall her striking revival of Evita at New York City Center was the talk of the town. Now, Sammi brings Celine Song’s new play Endlings to off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop. Sammi helmed Endlings' world premiere American Repertory Theater and worked to develop it at Playwrights Realm and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. BroadwayBox recently caught up with Sammi to talk about immersing herself in the world of Endlings, bringing back her Ragtime on Ellis Island, and realizing her dream for Evita.

We opened Kristina Wong: Sweatshop Overlord last night and I couldn’t be more proud of the work that was led by @chayyew and @mskristinawong alongside the crew and entirety of @nytw79. This show embodies so many beautiful lessons and experiences from both Kristina herself and those around her. Happy to have been a part of creating something new for the world to take in. If you are in NYC I highly recommend going to see this show! 📷: @beccateckes #newyorktheatreworkshop #nytw #kristinawong #kristinawongsweatshopoverlord #nytheatre #nyctheatre #lowereastside #costumes (at New York Theater Workshop) https://www.instagram.com/p/CV5o2LJrCYj/?utm_medium=tumblr

In 1994, the #Broadwaymusical #RENT started its revolutionary production with a three week limited run workshop here at #NewYorkTheatreWorkshop. (I would have tried to go in, but they were working on a load in or out and I really didn't want to interrupt, so here is a #creepershot of the cool interior) * The show was #groundbreaking in so many ways, but the one I am personally most thankful for is making the lotto/rush system a thing that is now used by most #Broadway productions, allowing tickets to be available at a much lower price point for people who can't afford the sometimes staggeringly high-priced theatre tickets usually sold. * PS If you're a fan of #RENTthemusical, I highly recommend treating yourself to a listen of the painfully awful precursor to #OneSongGlory, "Right Brain" and marveling at what could have been and almost was. You can easily find it on YouTube. * #broadwayhistory #nyc #nychistory #manhattan #rockopera #newyorkinthe90s (at New York Theatre Workshop)

Experiencing Monday night’s first preview of New York Theatre Workshop’s exhilarating new production of “Merrily We Roll Along”, together with fellow members of our original Broadway cast (Liz Callaway, Mana Allen, David Loud, David Cady, Jim Walton and Evan Pappas from the original London cast) was nothing short of magical! And celebrating with this brilliant new cast and crew was the icing on this delicious cake!Congratulations to each and all!!! Here’s to us, who’s like us, damn few. #passingthetorch #merrilywerollalong #newyorktheatreworkshop #sondheim #broadwaymusicals

I attended a performance of #JeremyOHarris ' #SlavePlay directed by the always provocative #RobertOHara. It a #long #hard #deep & #raw examination of interracial dating. No puns intended. Psycho analytical cause and affect is presented. There are moments of shock suprise and humor. My audience was 80% white but they waited to see if the black people laughed first which gave them permission. The laughter took some of the uneasiness away but no one was released from their thoughts and realities. It's been extended but many shows are sold out. For now the code "Mail" can save you 20% Kaneisha ( #TeyonahParris) Mista Jim ( #PaulAlexanderNolan) Mistress Alana ( #AnnieMcNamara)  Phillip ( #SullivanJones)  Gary ( #AtoBlanksonWood) Dustin ( #JamesCusatiMoyer) #newyorktheatreworkshop (at New York Theatre Workshop) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrWor8kj3xK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jmbqig7mot3u

Meet the Kids Who’ll Make ‘Sing Street’ Rock (New York Times)
Tumblr media
For “Sing Street,” though, they needed kids who looked like kids and could play pop-rock songs by Carney and the Scottish musician Gary Clark. The group they put together included the English actor and “Game of Thrones” alum Brenock O’Connor, who portrays Conor, and Zara Devlin, an actor from Northern Ireland, as Raphina — along with a clutch of affable and energetic actor-musicians, one of whom is still in high school.
