When the French say, "I miss you", what they are actually saying is more like, "you are missing from me".

Tu me manques.

It seems this concept is difficult for English-speakers to grasp (unless they speak another language that has a similar construction). So English-speakers will usually try to say, "Je te manque". But that means, "You miss me." A little presumptuous!

Here's how I explain it:

Imagine you are pie and all the people you love make you whole. When one of the people you love is not there, it's like a piece of the pie is cut out. You are no longer whole. There's a piece missing from the pie. So you say to your piece of pie loved one, "you are missing from me".

Hungarians use a similar construction. They also don't say, "I miss you", but more like, "You are missing to me".

favorite word?

Umm in English it's shatter, doesn't have much to do with the meaning, I just think it sounds cool, and it's a strong word when I'm describing something in a story.

In my mother tongue (Hungarian) my favorite one is acél (it means steel btw). Again, has nothing to do with the meaning, I just think it sounds pretty cool. Wish I could write it here phonetically, but I have no idea how to do that 🫠

Hungarian sayings you might wanna use

"A hazug embert hamarabb utolérik mint a sánta kutyát" - "A lying person gets caught before a lame/crippled dog"

"lakat van a száján" - "They have a lock on their mouth" (keeping a secret)

"Egy bolond százat csinál" - "One fool makes a hundred" (if someone does something stupid, people will follow it)

"Egy fecske nem csinál nyarat" - "One swallow (bird) doesn't make summer" (you can't get far without help/one thing doesn't immediately lead to another)

"Egyik kutya másik eb" - "One is a dog, another is a canine" (although different names, they're the same)

"Nagy az állatkertje Istennek, de alacsony a kerítés" - "God's zoo is big, but the fence is short" (talking about how there's a lot of idiots)

"Nem esik messze az alma a fájától" - "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree" (referring to someone that's just like their parents, usually in a bad way)

"Bort iszik, vizet prédikál" - "He drinks wine, but he preaches water" (Referring to someone that always talks about how good they're, but they don't even do the things they say)

Persze vágyom a gyengédségre, a szeretetre, a törődésre. De ilyen törötten nem ez a prioritás többé. Hiszem ha egyszer jól leszek engem is megtalál a szerelem. Lehet nem most. Lehet nem jövőre. De egyszer biztos.

OFMD fun fact!

Remember the scene of Ed making a pros-and-cons list about being alive? I recently watched some episodes of the show with Hungarian dub, when Ed says 'warmth', the translation says 'ölelés', which translates to hugs. I just think that's kinda cute, in a way. If you ignore the context of the scene, and also I assume the reason they didn't translate it directly, which is because it would have been 'meleg(ség)' which is a common term in Hungarian to refer to gay people and gayness. I'm honestly not sure why they didn't just go with that tho. I love me some dialogoue with double meaning

(Yeah we call gay people 'warm'. I don't even know why we just do?? Anyways,)

Shoutout to the translators for that I guess??? I mean the whole translation is a mess tho like they managed to misgender Jim despite the fact that there are no gendered pronouns in the language??
