"There was a sort of unspoken understanding between the two of them — that the exchange was a certain, rare kind of comfort. It was the kind that was found once in a blue moon – far less often than it was needed. The kind that was surely not normal by society's standards, but was so innocent that it need not be explained to anyone who didn't care to try and understand it."
Oh don't mind me, just busy crying over this excerpt about unconventional comforting from a XieHua friendship appreciation ff I recently read... 🥲

The Inevitable
(a Xie Yuchen POV ficlet / internal monologue)
There was a boy who used to come and play around my house. His grandmother was my grandfather’s cousin. When he met me for the first time, he asked me to marry him. “Xiao Hua is a pretty name. My name is Wu Xie, do you want to be my bride?”
Tumblr media
I told him I’d consider it, and it made him very happy. He immediately ran into the parlor where his uncle was having tea with my uncle and announced to all the adults of our two families, “I’m going to marry Xiao Hua when I grow up!”
Tumblr media
The adults laughed.
But then one day, his uncle and mine went on another tomb excavation, but only his uncle returned. After that, the boy stopped coming to our house.
A decade later, Wu Xie’s uncle disappeared as well. On our search for the truth behind the tragedies that have plagued our families for the past three generations, I met Wu Xie again.
“So you are Xiao Hua?”
Tumblr media
I’m no longer the little girl he met a decade ago. I’m now the widely feared head of the Xie family, a cunning and ruthless figure in the dark world of grave robbers and black market antiques. But he is still the innocent and trusting young master Wu. It saddened me to see that even he could not avoid our shared fate, that even he was bound to eventually follow in his uncle and grandfather’s footsteps and enter my world.
Tumblr media
He was the light we all tried to protect, my little fiancé. I wanted him to live a normal life, to stay out of the family business. But it seems like some things cannot be avoided.
He met Zhang Qiling, and there was no turning back after that, even when all things reached their inevitable end.
Tumblr media
He said he will wait a decade for that man. And since that is Wu Xie’s decision, I will wait with him. We will all be there, the old nine families, when ten years have passed, to see if the head of the Zhang family would keep his promise this time around.
How many decades do we have in a lifetime?
Shifu was right. The head of the Zhang family cannot be trusted lightly. But when he lights a candle, everyone will follow him into the darkness.

It's probably cheating to ask about pingxie for the ship classifications, isn't it? XD But let's start there and add on HuaXie? ^_^
it is a little bit but i appreciate it all the same i appreciate all opportunities to talk about my boys <3
pingxie is firmly in makes sense, compels me because well. it very much compels me but without getting into thesis level word vomit because if you let me that's exactly what's going to happen there's heaps and heaps of elements in the story that point at the very least towards the fact that they're both a special existence to each other, and regardless of whether you choose to see their bond as an ultimately romantic one or a purely platonic one, it's a significant and unquestionable one
huaxie is in makes sense, doesn't compel because for dmbj i'm honestly only genuinely feral over one ship you'll never guess which one even if there are other ships that lowkey compel me maybe those ones are better to try and guess. huaxie still makes sense to me in that i can understand why people would ship them because if you want to go there, it's not like there aren't elements in canon to work with. the narrative repeatedly presents wu xie and xiao hua as two sides of the same coin who by the time sand sea has passed, have gained both a fundamental understanding and respect for each other, but also a close bond wherein both, maybe xiao hua more so, are protective of each other in different ways. i don't personally ship them, but their relationship is an otherwise very compelling one

Monday Fic Recs
Wang Pangzi/Xie Yuchen (DMBJ)
I see gold at the edge of the sun by bimingjue
When a business deal goes wrong, Pangzi ends up in massive debt. Not wanting to lose more face than he already has, he tries to solve it on his own. As soon as Wu Xie realises something is wrong, he reaches out to Xie Yuchen, who accepts to help way faster and easier than expected.
Xie Yuchen doesn’t end up just looking into the case, but also into his own heart.
Oh, I loved this so much! Pangzi tries hard to solve everything by himself, and Xie Yuchen is a stone cold badass.
Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling (DMBJ)
Just A Harmless Tomb Adventure by daydreamorama
Liu Sang has been been working very hard lately with back to back jobs. The Iron Triangle devises a plan to give Liu Sang some down time. It does not go as planned.
This is delightfully whumpy, but also really soft. Everyone just taking care of everyone else and I love it.
Sit Back and Relax by lungache
A day at the spa is not Pangzi’s first iron triangle vacation choice, but he's in for a pleasant surprise.
I am always here for fics where Pangzi gets taken care of in the way that he deserves
Wu Xie/Xie Yuchen (DMBJ)
How do I look? by chancellorxofxtrash
A question, that kept returning, a question that Wu Xie kept asking. A question Xie Yuchen never quite answered honestly.
This isn't a pairing I'd ever really considered before but this fic absolutely sells it. It's sweet, heartbreaking and soft. I loved it.

Wu Xie Birthday Week Day 1 redux: Friendship > Wu Xie & Xie Yuchen "I wasn't sure why, but even though Xiao Hua didn't deliberately talk to me or anything, I didn't feel as if the atmosphere was strange or awkward. Maybe it was because our backrounds were so similar, but I felt as if he was a reflection of myself." (DMBJ vol.7, ch. 35)

Maybe an au where Ursa flees with Azula and Zuko?
Hello, anon!!!
The night that Ozai asks for the throne, Azulon doesn't call for Zuko's head but for Azula's. Like before, Azula is the only one there when Azulon orders Ozai to kill her. Terrified, she flees to her mother (because she literally has no where else to go) and Ursa is quickly able to see that something is really scaring Azula, this clearly isn't an act. Ursa eventually finds out what Ozai has agreed to and still provides him with a way to kill Azulon and get himself the throne. (Ozai: What do you want in return? Ursa: The children come with me. Ozai: Fine. Take the boy, but Azula remains. Ursa:...Fine. I will leave Azula here, but I'm taking Zuko. Ozai: I hope you two find a nice little peasant village to live in.) Of course Ursa is lying through her teeth because that night she takes both of her children out of the palace and runs away in the dead of night. (Ozai literally agreed to kill Azula a few hours ago. She's not just leaving her there). She gets them down to the boats and then has to deal with them screaming and demanding to know where they're going (but they're also 8 and 10 years old and very easy move) so Ursa gets them on the boat and they leave. (Yes, Azula does try to jump into the water and swim back to shore and yes, Ursa is very tired by the end of the night).
The three end up in the Earth Kingdom, near Omashu, and take refugee in a small village for a few days to get themselves together. Ursa's main plan is to just figure out where to go next because she has no doubts that Ozai knows that she took Azula is coming after them so she needs to get somewhere safe: Ba Sing Se. The only problem is that none of them have passports that'll get them into the city (actually they do have passports but it would look really weird if they showed up with Fire Nation passports saying they were members of the Royal Family). This means to Ursa that she has to either steal passports from another family or buy fake ones to get them all into the city. She opts for the first option as they're on a bit of a time crunch. (Ursa: I packed enough money to get us to the Huaxi Village. That'll get us half way to Full Moon Bay where we can catch a ferry and- Azula: I'm not going. I'll stay here and wait for dad. Ursa: Azula- Azula: I'm not going with you! I never wanted to come! Ursa: I wasn't going to just leave you there! Azula: I would have been fine! Ursa, who is tired: Ozai was ready to kill you, Azula!! Azula:....Ursa: Do you think he wouldn't act on it?! Because he was going to! Would you have preferred I leave you behind with a man who doesn't love you and wanted you dead just for the throne!?! Azula: *Runs off and hides in the bathroom* Ursa: Azula... Zuko:... Ursa:... Zuko:...These are good dumplings.)
The next day, Ursa takes both the kids and they start walking to Huaxi. It's a long, long walk, especially with two young kids, but they eventually make it there. Huaxi, because it's so close to Full Moon Bay, is filled with refugees, all of whom have passports. Ursa doesn't love the idea of stealing passports from another family but no one else has the Fire Lord coming right after them. She waits until Zuko and Azula are asleep then sneaks out (Yes, she has the Blue Spirit mask) and steals three passports, one for a woman and two children passports. (Zuko: Mom? Ursa: Zuko, you should be asleep. Zuko: Did you steal those? Ursa: Sweetie, we'll talk- Zuko: Did you steal those? Ursa: Yes. Zuko: I thought we weren't supposed to steal. Don't other people need those. Ursa: I don't like it anymore than you do, but if it's a choice between you and your sister and a random family, I'm going to make sure you and your sister are safe. These passports will get us to Ba Sing Se and you two will be able to live there in peace. Zuko: But- Ursa: You'll understand when you're older. Now, go to bed.) The next morning, Ursa is thankful for firebenders rising with the sun because the three of them are gone before anyone can realize their passports are missing.
They make it to Ba Sing Se and get inside the city with little issue, but are placed in the lower ring. Ursa doesn't care as much about that as her only real worry now is getting the kids inside and situated safety. Azula and Zuko, of course, do not like going from a Royal Palace to a tiny apartment that they aren't allowed to firebend in. Zuko kind of understands why his mom did what she did but he also hates the change just as much as Azula does. Ursa is too tired to deal with her kids anger so kind of ignores them which gets them, especially Azula, even more angry. One day, while Ursa is out looking for a job and a school for the kids, Azula and Zuko run away. Their plan is to go back to the Fire Nation because Ozai needs to have heirs so of course he'll take them back. Ursa arrives home that night and, when she finds, no one there, panics and starts running around the entire lower ring looking for her children. (Zuko: Azula, are you sure this is a good idea? Azula: I'm sure, dum-dum. We'll be fine. Zuko: It's just that...mom wouldn't have brought us here unless she thought- Azula: She stole us from the palace and dumped us in this chicken-pig sty! If you want to be a baby and cry about it, be my guest, but I'm going home. Zuko: I'm not a baby! I'm a prince! Azula: Then prove it and let's go home.) (Would you believe that yelling about how you belong in a palace and are royalty attracts attention?) Zuko and Azula are jumped by people who hear them yelling and the siblings are forced to firebend at them. However, these men are grown men and Zuko and Azula are children. The men are about to hand them over to the Dai Li (for a handsome reward) when Ursa jumps in (again Blue Spirit mask) and gets the kids out. Ursa and the kids have a heart to heart where she apologizes for not noticing how big a change this is for them and ignoring them. And the kids agree to give the city a shot, especially after Ursa promises that she'll make them traditional Fire Nation food and get them some red clothes.
Years go by, Ursa is working at the local library, Zuko is working at a tea shop and Azula is working at a combat studio. They've created a small life form themselves there, away from the Fire Nation, and are starting to finally break free of Ozai's abuse when they get word that the Avatar is in the upper ring. Getting curious, Azula and Zuko decide to go visit him where it's revealed that they're firebenders and the two admit to being Ozai's children. Aang, desperate for a firebending master, asks them to come along (who better to teach him how to defeat the Fire Lord then his children?). Zuko and Azula are hesitant to go, both because they don't want to return to their father and because they don't want to leave their mother, but when the issues with Long Feng start up, the three person family realize that they can't just stay hidden in the city forever and agree to help. (Yes, Ursa is coming with them because why don't these children have any kind of adult supervision?). After the fight with Long Feng and the Dai Li, Azula and Zuko start to train Aang as best they can while unaware that Long Feng spent a very interesting letter to Ozai about how two teenagers and a woman, claiming to be his wife and children, are in Ba Sing Se and helping the Avatar.

5 notes on Xie Lian and maybe a note more
omg this took so long i'll proofread in the morning. written in chinese originally, under "read more". annotations on [google docs] with translations to come because there are too many.
(if you do chinese, skip to the cut! it is way better than the translation cri.)

it is fortunate that their ship name is coined Hualian and not Hua-xie. The flower withers, the petals fall. Yet there is a time for blossoms, a time for withers — if huaxie it really is, still it is befitting of their eight hundred years of separations and reencounters.
Heavenly flowers empathise and shed mercy; entire rivers and cities bow down in gratitude.
Whence the body dwells incessant the heart thrives beyond, content.
o n e .
He was pierced by a hundred swords. Thereafter, he offered to be pierced again. The nightly terrors that prowl wild in his dreams: he was ready to embrace it once more. The heart pierces, and yet it trembles.
t w o.
A thought experiment: if Wuming didn't die for Xie Lian at the rematerialisation of the hundred swords, would Xie Lian have accepted his second ascension?
The world is a wretched sea. Mortals, misery. Some people carry with them the weight of conscience, atlas or abyss on their shoulders as they edge stepwise towards the heavenly skies, for they know that the higher they go, the more power they wield in their hands to change the course of the stars. Lin Shu stands on the shoulders of legacy and demarcates Conscience on the ground. He steps into the encirclement he has carved: he holds himself hostage and falls into the nether realms of the incessant inferno, subject to an unyielding pursuit for bygone honours and nobility in store. It takes courage, to live like this.
But it also takes another kind of courage, to not live like this. Xie Lian wasn’t like Lin Shu. Dethroned, mortalised, buried and stripped of power and grace, he wandered on earth for eight hundred years. He did not save the destitute mortals, desolate and crying for help. He did not bestow on them the bountiful blessings, as what a god could do. The did-not-do’s — it takes in another courage to be him.
t h r e e.
Had Xie Lian really collected scraps these eight hundred years? To deny would be an injury to his memoir, but there is more to that. He served as the high priest of a kingdom, a general to an army; through the grapevine, the crown prince in white had played many roles on the stage of life, a hundred years here in the role of one, and a hundred from forth in the robes of another. In time, the tales of the one who inspired rose and ebbed, yet the legacies remain. He didn’t protect the people with his deified status, yet what endures is his compassion and mercy. In the rain, the figure clad in white walks past the world in joy and tears and touches the hearts he passes — this was his salvation, and his ascension to godhood.
f o u r.
At his second banishment, Xie Lian implores Jun Wu to assuage him of his merit and luck. Mortals light incense in exchange for blessings in supplication. Xie Lian disperses Fortune to earth instead, and disassembles Divinity for the common people to carve out blessings of their own lives.
The works of one cannot salvage the teetering constructs of a foundering world. The world is a tapestry of woven histories; people save the people as the tales unfurl. The stitches tangling in a sea of light, blessed faces lit up in the night by the millions of lanterns adorning the households of the earth, keeping it bright as stars in the sky. And it was so, what Xie Lian and Hua Cheng did.
f i v e.
The sword nears his neck: he is unfazed. The tenderness and gentleness of the noble spirit endures, staid as the meekness of nephrite jade. In the vicissitudes of temperaments, he sits, blasé; he does not concern himself with the triumphs and setbacks of life.
Clouds and storms wash across the world as he continues, with eased smiles and casual dialogue.
It is the most pitiable thing, of all in the world, gazing upon one who smiles placid in face of abject misery. He laughs in his affliction, yet is there such a thing, to be okay in utter wretchedness?
Fleeting moments of forlornness and joy all condensed in the time of a single gaze: his experiences refine him into a jade of the heart. The days of the ingenuous youth awash in ages past, gone were the luckiest teen of the kingdom, but the pureness in the eyes behind the sheaths of pain remain.
— I’m used to it, it matters no more;
who is there in this race with him but the immutable laws of nature in the crescent moon and wind?
The splendour surges, the crowds fete, the splendour falls — in the desert there is none: there is no glass of water waiting at your salvation. Dust and silt fork at each’s turn of fate; flies shovel across the path towards their better destinies. So long as one has feelings, has desires, how could one be truly free? The flower remains. The vista is unchanged. Yet the splendorous tower — the radiant memories of the past — bygones — and still he says that although the body dwells incessant, the heart thrives content. Where, pray, is the fount of the utopian peach blossom? How so, that the heart is at peace, in face of all this?
Yet he is well. His heart at peace. Where the heart lies, the peach blossoms spring.
+ 1
Xie Lian is this person, as such. Though the spring of the peach blossoms have long since dwindled, he hopes, towards.

Heavenly flowers empathise and shed mercy; entire rivers and cities bow down in gratitude.
Whence the body dwells incessant the heart thrives beyond, content.

Full annotations found here. Untranslated for now because there are simply too many; I suggest copying and pasting into the browser if you are interested in the poetry and verses cited. Many of them are not used as per their original meaning, however, so it is 99% on me if you caught the reference but did not understand it.
Anyhow, a note on the two most important allusions, because there is value in such:
[1] 身在无间,心在桃源。Whence the body dwells incessant, the heart thrives beyond, content.
A suggested translation of "Body in abyss, heart in paradise" because I vehemently abhor the official tl.
Incessant hints to the nirvana of buddhism. I didn't play with the idea of using paradise like in John Milton's poem to encapsulate the utopian ideals of Jin dynasty Tao Yuanming's Taoist Peach Blossom Spring visions. In Tao's essay he expresses the notion "I can live in a peaceful provincial paradise where the peach blossoms spring and forget about worldly matters", which is not exactly the biblical Eden. Probably owing to the idea that Xie Lian never actively sought out an extraterrestrial, heavenly, peach-blossom-spring paradise, I did not translate it literally here but figuratively, though opinion probably divides on this one.

Extreme liberties taken. Li Qingzhao wrote the first poem from the perspective of a lover. She sits at her own chambers reminiscing about her lost lover. This in turn was alluding to Feng Yansi's poem. Both works reference a tower/chamber where two mythical lovers spent their time at before ascension. As such, this phrase denotes here something unattainable from past memories and someone locked in perpetuum, in stasis, waiting for something to come.
In relation to this line on the chamber/tower by Li Qingzhao, a direct allusion to Tao Yuanming's peach blossom utopia was also alluded to in Li's poem in the antecedent line, despite both being used to speak of romance and not sociopolitical utopian ideals. The sleep-deprived me thus thought it "apt" to cite both lines in the writing to express Xie Lian's longing for the peach blossom paradise, despite said paradise being no longer extant on Earth, and him being in incessant hell. The peach blossoms in question tie in with mxtx's allusion of the peach blossom spring in tgcf's famous quotation; thus explains the reason for all the convoluted quoting.
this much for now. I hope something makes sense, at least. The english version is very, very figurative since I realised the chinese version was nigh impossible to literally translate without dedicating a relatively great amount of time to it. I don't know how this will be received at all, but why hi, and hope it is something at least xD
