#Hua Cheng's magical butterfly
Text
Tumblr media
finished the hua cheng mural wip!!!
I seriously love Hua Cheng's artistic side. There's something so relatable about him trying to learn calligraphy and failing and hating it (he isn't enthusiastic about learning it) but him being able to perfectly capture Xie Lian's likeness because he's practiced it so many times (he's very enthusiastic about learning it). He can master anything he wants to master and cannot master what he doesn't want to master.
Anyway he doesn't need a grid to help him paint the mural because he has magic and butterfly. tysm.

had a tgcf and svsss crossover idea
ok so xie lian and hua cheng find this book (or whatever a book is in that universe) by an author named "airplane". wtf is an airplane anyways? so they start reading and its about a world a gajillion years in the future where there's paper that's made out of metal and it can change its image on will? and metal birds that carry people like swords except they're called airplanes and they're designed for the usage of many people at once??? why would the author name himself after that? chunks of metal with wheels that don't need horses???
"why dont they use cultivation" you ask, because there is none! so weird, right? anyways, they keep reading and there's so much stuff they call technology that's basically just magic. it's about an overpressured author who eats food that only needs water to be edible and sends his writing over an invisible spiderweb that covers the entire world. tbh, the author did a really bad job explaining all the "tech". overall a really stupid idea for a novel. xie lian honestly sorta likes it, but it's just wierd. the most odd part? these things keep coming out regularly. they're ridiculously long, and unlike other works from the same author, there's no sex scenes.
xie lian kinda likes it, and reads it every now and then cuddled up with hua cheng. hua cheng loves being next to xie lian, who giggles occasionally while reading, but hates the novel. somehow, shi qingxuan finds it, and shows it to ming yi, (shush leave me with my beefleaf) ming yi claims he doesn't like it but reads shi qingxuan's copy of that day's update every night. knows literally every detail, understands teh worldbuilding the best of anyone. feng xin and mu qing don't bother to read it, but they know a little about it.
one day, the next update is about someone who does something called a comment on his work. apparently, they do it a lot. and the character’s name is cucumber. who would name a character cucumber!? this author is weird. anyways the cucumber does a comment about a bunch of mean stuff critiquing the work and stuff. there are more than 3 pages of just mean commentings. the next page is about his metal paper. apparentlu, the metal paper can’t touch water, or else it poisons the water??? this makes no sense. not even ming yi can explain how it works. and then the main character touches the poison water? what a dumb character, remarks hua cheng.
main character wakes up in a cultivation world. apparentlhy main character was writing a story about this world? how dumb. hualien and beefleaf are crossing a road while reading this when a reckless cart driver is about to crash into them. hua cheng, obviously, obliterated the cart and its driver. problem solved!
later that evening, when the four fall asleep, they don’t awaken (in those bodies, anyways). fengqing finds them, starts yelling their heads off, eventually brings their comatose bodies to ling wen, who shrugs and puts them in a drawer.
meanwhile, hualien and beefleaf are reeling. they didn't get transferred into different bodies, but they are at a hospital. someone who looks vaguely like ling wen tells them that they were found half-dead under the seats of a funeral of some guy named shen jiu. weird. the nurse tries to charge them but, upon finding the only currency they have is merits, groans and lets them leave.  hua cheng rolls dice. nothing happens.
xie lian asks where hua cheng’s butterflies are. hua cheng shrugs, but seems visibly on-edge. none of them are able to do cultivation when they try. people are looking at them weird. who the hell does cosplay in the middle of the street? some guy compliments xie lian and hua cheng on their tgcf cosplay. none of the four understand any of those words. someone asks to take a picture of them. take a picture? she pulls out a chunk of metal, holds it in front of their faces, presses next to them. oh, is it a mirror? but she clicks a white circle at the right of the rectangilar mirror, and it flashes bright white. hua cheng begins threatening her for daring to harm xie lian’s eyes, but xie lian apologetically gets him to back off.
the woman apologises and asks if they’re new to the area. shi qingxuan says yes, and she offers the four a place to stay. ming yi holds up his shovel, arguing that he could just dig a hole in the ground and sleep there. he has to be reminded that cultivation doesn’t work here.
back in the danmei world, airplane is no longer making money from his latest series, “an author without cultivation”! there were a few people buying it, but not anymore. they also tended to overpay wildly. airplane somehow pieces it together; (idk) ohhh they transferred to the human world. he convinces the system to let him and cucumber return to their world, but lbh protests. “where are you going shizun shizun dont leave me let me come with you shizun shizun come onnnnn shizunnnnnn” eventually they let him come too. mobei jun is ok with it as long as shang qinghua returns eventually. they transfer back to the human world, where cucumber finds himself in a coffin, at his own funeral. everyone is shocked when shen yuan sits up in his original body. people scream and shout and everyone is very happy, but cucumber barely remembers any of them. it’s been, like, twenty years. he can hardly remember his parents’ names. he smiles, laughs a little, rpetrends to know everyone, and then lbh arrives. through the window. pulls out an enormous sword. people then start screaming, because omg shen yuan’s enormous murder boyfriend is here. his parents scold him a little “why didn't you tell us you got a murder boyfriend” before getting yeeted into a wall. mmkay that’s happening now. luo bignhe and shen qingqiu spend their first day in the modern world in jail.
shang qinghua pays for their bail. apparently, they all arrived back to the modern world a day after sqq’s death, and a day before sqh’s. time travel? they don’t even know at this point. they manage to track down the other four by following a police report on a man in a red tunic and butterfly jewelry threatening a poor tgcf fan, witnesses report. (the woman wasnt even the one who ratted them out, it was the ugy who complimented them on their cosplays haha.) sqq and sqh share a look. that sounds like hua cheng, from tian guan ci fu! isn’t that a really popular danmei? lbh is just sitting next to them like a lost puppy, following them around, reminding shizun that he can tear anyone who dares question his authority to pieces. anyways they find the four. their conversation kinda goes like this.
sqq: hey are you xie lian?
hua cheng: who are you (the four are very concerned as they have never seen metal birds that make loud noises before)
lbh: how dare you threaten my husband
sqq and xie lian: binghe/san lang, calm down
sqq and xie lian make uncomfortable eye contact. woah. that guy also has an overprotective but lovable husband. neat. homosexuality.
xie lian:  yeah im xie lian, this is san lang, ming yi, and shi qingxuan
sqh: *looks at the other, nods* mmkay and are you familiar with the undiscovered gem of a series called “an author without cultivation”?
hua cheng and ming yi roll their eyes, the other two nod
sqx: yeah, what about it?
sqh: yeah, i’m the author! *waits for applause that never comes*
ming yi: so you know why we’re here?
sqq: well did you read it and hate it or somehting?
*lbh is still glaring at hua cheng. hua cheng is still glaring at lbh*
hua cheng: it was very easy to hate
sqh: *sqq laughs* shut up cucumber
ming yi: *snaps to attention* that was the name of one of your characters! peerless cucumber.
sqq: *laughing, elbows sqh* guess someone doesn’t hate it so much after all
*ming yi smacks him on the head with a shovel. lbh smacks ming yi on the head with his fist. they both pass out.*
sqx, catching ming yi: sorry about him, he can be a bit… (doesn’t finish)
sqh: yeah, no problem. my husband’s the same.
hua cheng: what?
sqh: *completely ignores him and moves on* okay so here’s what’s happening; i come from this world. i teleported to your world to do things accidentally after i died. then i stayed in your world and got a husband and started writing again and stuff.
xie lian: what things? and also you havent told us what you mena by we’re all gay. also why are giant metal birds your namesake?
sqh, swallowing: this is gonna take a while
they explain to the tgcf crew and stuff, and they end up grabbing an apartment. turns out, none of them know how to transfer htemselves back. also, they all appear to be human now. they appear the same, they’re all just human. sqh gets them a flat, and they all sleep on the floor.
ok i might update this later but who knows haha

Rewatching tgcf has given me thoughts about abstinence cultivation. So obviously Xie Lian's workaround is just getting filled up with evil qi and borrowing excessive amounts of spiritual power from one Hua Cheng. Which fair.
But that got me thinking about my other favourite ascetic, Chu Wanning and it has come to my attention that his spiritual power appears to be doing just fine in the 2.0 timeline despite the fact he is definitely dabbling in the dark arts. Suspicious.
Anyways I have some thoughts but they are pure conjecture based on out of context spoilers (which are probably massive so proceed with caution if you havent read the mtl) I have stumbled across on the Internet because the Internet is a dangerous place when you're a danmei fan that hasn't dabbled in fan translations or mtl.
So my thought is that dual cultivating with a butterfly boned beauty feast is probably compensating for it. Since having relations with them is supposed to increase spiritual power. Chu Wanning isn't getting any power ups, but I feel like if your path to spiritual power is abstinence and you fuck around you should find yourself with no powers. Otherwise what is the point?
Alternatively, it's going to have something to do with the fact he's made of wood and therefore not a real boy and so normal rules don't apply?
(I have literally no idea about this apart from the fact I saw a YouTube comment calling him pinocchio and there's something to do with Murong Chuyyi being buried under a magical tree)

evidence for my hua cheng adhd headcanon:
gets bored easily. irritable and restless when bored
HATES calligraphy (task he finds boring and pointless)
fidgets with his clothes/ the pearl/ the string or via e-ming
no filter
tons of random knowledge and skills. he spent 800 years hyperfixating on every subject possible
enjoys working with his hands (he made a door, likes working in the fields w/ xl, sculpting and painting, etc)
bad temper (ie xl needing to help calm him down in book 2 when he's caving qi rong's skull in)
impulsivity, but that doesn't really matter when you're an unbelievably rich and powerful ghost king (careless with money, likes to go places unexpectedly like banyue/ breaking xl out of house arrest/ qi rong's lair)
especially so when xl is concerned (quick to give him things like the armory and the ring, go places)
novelty seeking (the above, plus paradise manor is filled with unique knick-knacks and weapons)
very into gambling (could be executive function or, again, could just be Very Rich)
the butterflies. the ability to magically switch perspectives and see potentially hundreds of places isn't a symptom (lol) but i think it might be comparable to having adhd (like constantly having fifty different trains of thought all going on at once)
i've just finished book 2 on my reread so i may come back and edit this with more :)

I know this is ghost magic and it's not supposed to make sense and I really shouldn't think about it but I can't help but wonder how does Hua Cheng having magic spiritual butterflies translates to him manifesting silk like... you get silk from the cocoons of silkworms (that turn into moths not butterflies but that's the least of it) which are boiled, killing the worm inside before it can hatch. So like, how does Hua Cheng get the silk from the butterflies alone??? Does he also have a bunch of spiritual silkworms whose job is to produce raw silk (that HC then weaves with magic) without metamorphosising?? Do his butterflies start as spiritual silkworms that leave their cocoons behind when turning into butterflies and HC uses that? Is Hua Cheng doing actual sericulture and then turning the spirits of the silkworms he killed for their silk into spiritual butterflies?

I'm thinking about tiny fairy Hua Cheng. He's still terrifying to everyone except Xie Lian. His butterflies are still butterfly-sized. He rides around on one sometimes. Xie Lian thinks he's THE cutest thing.
I'm just a little sad because that means they can't cuddle properly... maybe Hua Cheng can magically make Xie Lian fairy-sized and take him on butterfly trips.

Here's a scene I wrote from my Boring Face Xie Lian AU
The context is Hua Cheng got bit by a scorpion snake and pretended to die because the suspiciously boring god that's also immortal isn't who he's looking for, obviously. Since he spent the whole afternoon annoying a disguised He Xuan, He Xuan decides to draw his suffering out a bit longer. Hua Cheng isn't doing any ghost magic because that would break character. I'm calling this disguise "San Lang" for now because I want to write, not look up Chinese baby names.
Hua Xie is a completely new god with absolutely no relation to Xie Lian whatsoever, for realsies.
"We should bury him. If we don't, he'll come back as a very resentful, very annoying ghost. He'll probably bother us a lot and claim that we owe him a great debt for mistreating his body." Ming Yi said, with the tone of a person intimately familiar with such hauntings.
Three percent, Black Water.
Ming Yi gave no sign that she'd heard anything.
Windmaster hummed in agreement, somewhere on his other aide, "Did you bring your shovel?"
"No." Ming Yi said, sounding cross and shuffling quietly.
"I can do it." Hua Xie, the new god spoke up, "I don't have much spiritual power but I can dig a hole. You two should go on ahead."
The other two murmured in agreement. They made plans amongst themselves to meet up near the tallest building in Banyue if Windmaster and Earthmaster hadn't returned by the time Hua Xie finished burying the body.
Hua Cheng summoned a butterfly, and watched from the decaying roof of a nearby building as the scrap god lifted his small, teen body over his shoulders to what appeared to be a long abandoned and dried out garden. He laid the body down gently in the dry dirt, folded his hands over his chest, and walked away with intent towards a collapsed shed. Pulling rotted boards and digging dirt, rocks, and roof tiles away with his hands, he finally hummed in approval and retrieved an old, rusty shovel from the pile.
He walked around the garden plot, quietly assessing, and began to dig with the expertise and rhythm of a man familiar with labor, and the speed of a martial god. Half an hour passed to the steady sound of breaking ground and falling dirt, until suddenly there was a loud crack, and the scrap god stumbled.
The handle of the shovel had broken.
The scrap god tried to repair it with a length of rope and another long piece of wood, but the rope and wood were just as old as the shovel, and practically disintegrated after a few more minutes.
Hua Xie huffed in frustration. He put his hands on his hips and quietly glared at the broken shovel surrounded by equally broken repairs. Finally he sighed, and muttered, "Nothing I can do about it then."
Hua Cheng's heart soared. Finally, this scrap god would leave his body and he'd be able to leave as well without breaking his agreement with He Xuan.
He almost sat up in shock when, instead of leaving, Hua Xie tore several long strips of fabric from the hem of his outer robes and began to wrap his hands. He then took hold of the shovel blade, settled on his knees by San Lang's body, and began to dig, scooping dirt out of the growing hole. Though he was much slower than before, he was still much faster than any mortal laborer with a new shovel.
Another hour passed like this, the rhythmic sounds of digging and breathing. Hua Cheng thought it was funny that this man was so afraid of being haunted that he was digging a grave with a handle-less shovel, and all Hua Cheng wanted was to never see him again! This whole trip had been disappointing and stupid, and even his incredibly good fortune hadn't saved him from wasting time. He couldn't use magic or this god would immediately know he was a ghost. <Justify in previous chapter>. All he could do was wait, and watch from above until the moment his body was out of sight, at which point he could make his escape.
Finally the grave was done, and Hua Xie stood, his head and shoulders just taller than the edge of the hole. He climbed out, and Hua Cheng saw that his hands left bloody prints in the dirt. His face held no expression, and it was impossible to tell what he was thinking. The Hua Xie stepped around the hole to San Lang's body. Hua Cheng fluttered his butterfly wings in anticipation, knowing that it was almost over, and he'd soon be able to leave.
Instead of rolling the body into the grave, Hua Xie knelt by the body. Hua Cheng couldn't see the upper half of his own body or Hua Xie's face from his vantage point, and so was surprised when he felt a warm drop of water land on his own cheek. Then another. A sob. A gentle hand, smoothing his hair, arranging his collar. Quietly muttered rites, simultaneously nostalgic and unfamiliar to him,.
An intake of air, a broken sound from the throat, and then, "I'm so sorry."
He choked the words out like he'd been eating the dirt instead of moving it. Hua Cheng listened from his corpse and watched from a butterfly as Hua Xie cried over a young man he'd met four hours ago.
"It always turns out like this. I can never really save anyone. Not when it counts."
Another tear splattered on his face, followed by the gentle brush of fabric as Hua Xie wiped it away. He then stood and scooped the body up like it weighed nothing. The god's strong arms cradled him like a sleeping child. He climbed into the hole, settling San Lang's body into the dirt like it was a fragile treasure, instead of a useless corpse.
Now warm soil fell upon his body, first covering his legs, torso, and then finally, as if putting it off for last, his face. He watched from the roof as Hua Xie used the broken shovel blade to fill the hole, and as he dragged a few large stones from a nearby collapsed wall to mark the site. He watched as Hua Xie knelt nearby, a look of sorrow and loss upon his features. He watched as the god stood again. He watched as he walked away. He watched until he could no longer see him from the roof.
Then he laid there in the dirt for a long time.

Proselfshiptember 2024 Day 8 - Magic
hua cheng decided to do a little magic show for haoyu with his butterflies! later he'll try to pretend he wasn't smiling the whole time, but we all know the truth...
i think this is my favorite drawing i've done for these prompts so far. i really, really liked how this one came out! i went in with the most vague sketch ever and just went "fuck it we ball" until a masterpiece came out. 😭

I finished the sketch with Hua Cheng
🖇A few of my thoughts🖇
I thought about who he could be in my universe, spent quite a long time rummaging through different sites with mythical creatures and decided to settle on the “Tiefling” race.
A person with partial demonic blood, who is often an outcast and a loner, is very suitable for Hua, don’t you think?
In my AU, Hua Cheng is strong in both magic and braininess, so I think he is still the very first discoverer of robotics and its compatibility with the body, but he uses all his developments only for his own purposes and purely for himself.
Dachshunds, features:
- the right eye is an artificial one, which Hua himself created and developed for a long time.
- Hua often collects thin plates of magic on top of the robot eye to increase the abilities of her eye.
- since he is mixed with a demon, he has small horns, clawed hands with black fingertips and nails, and a tattoo of lines on his body.
- the skin is grayish and always cold.
- with strong outbursts of emotions, the hair becomes enveloped in a black haze, the eyes light up scarlet, just like the tattoo on the body.
- scarlet with an admixture of black flashes is the distinctive color of his magic.
Hua also has, so to speak, pets, which he also created himself, butterflies, with the help of which he often monitors what is happening around him or collects information.
I’m still thinking about what to do with Emin and how he can be included here. Perhaps also some kind of robotic beast, or maybe a magical familiar like Xie Lian’s.
Well, that’s all for now, next will be his husband, of course😋

Favorite Disabled Web Novel Character Tournament
Last Checked: September 20th, 2024 - Please check the original post for updates
Submissions End: TBD
Rules
One character per submission
Submit as many times as you want
Must be from a web novel or an adaptation
In-world disabilities that don't exist IRL (ex: a character unable to use magic in a world where everyone else/most people can) will be accepted as long as you think it qualifies as a disability
Mental & non-physical disabilities will also be accepted, including mental illnesses & neurodiversity
The WN doesn't explicitly have to mention they're disabled/their disability, but I don't want to include pure headcanons since this tournament is more about highlighting canon disability representation. Feel free to talk about any headcanons in the ask box though! I enjoy hearing y'all's thoughts :)
Tag: #disabled WN characters tournament
Submissions
Cui Buqu from Peerless
Submission: Chronic fatigue, vulnerability to illness, heart in the wrong spot. Basically generically chronically ill
(The following is all from the Less Popular Danmei Character Tournament bc it’s really good propaganda lol)
Submission: He’s mean, he’s disabled and unapologetic about it, he’s a genius and all his braincells escape him when faced with his rival, he’s a secret agent and has no martial arts, he’s deeply in love and will never say so unless pushed, he will liken his rival to his sun and then tell him he’s the most annoying person he’s ever met. He’s a bastard little fox <3
Additional Propaganda #1
Additional Propaganda #2
Fu Shen from Golden Terrace/Golden Stage
Submission 1: Fu Shen's leg is broken in battle. He has to use a brace and a wheelchair while he recovers.
Submission 2:
Crippled legs/wheelchair bound for most of the novel  propaganda: The prologue of the novel is him basically suffering an assassination attempt which crippled his legs horribly when a bunch of rocks fall on him. Despite being wheelchair bound for most of the novel (he later gets these like leg exoskeleton support things but he can't wear them for more than a few hours or something and still has to use the wheelchair), he's still depicted as being just as badass and respected. His men still hold him in high regard, and he still goes around investigating shit and even once using a crossbow to take someone down. He also uses people underestimating him now that he's crippled to his advantage. His love interest is also incredibly sweet and remodels his whole estate to be wheelchair accessible right before he moves in after they're married.
Carrd/Image Link
Gu Mang from Remnants of Filth / Yuwu
Submission: He's missing some of his souls, which renders him intellectually disabled and amnesiac.
Wiki Link
Gu Yun from Sha Po Lang
Submission: He's half-deaf and half-blind, but still a badass.
Wiki Link
Hua Cheng from Heaven Official’s Blessing
Submission: Blind in one eye and uses his magical butterflies as a disability aid to help him see!
Jing Weiyi from The Imperial Uncle
Submission: Jing Weiyi's leg was broken when he fell off a horse when he was young. Afterwards, he walked with a limp for many years.
Ji Yushi from Mist [Unlimited]
Submission: Hyperthymesia... Basically, he can remember almost everything, and while that helps some in the scenarios of the novel, it also has a huge detrimental effect on him, and he needs pills to calm his mind and such. I'm not sure if it really counts as a disability, especially since there are less than a hundred people with this in real life, but I think it should count for this tournament since it's neurodivergence and such.
Kim Kiryeo from The Hunter of the Other World Who Is Being Misunderstood
Submission: Kiryeo has a badly healed leg injury which makes it difficult for him to walk and impossible to run, lungs damaged by smoking that heavily limit his physical ability, lung cancer that causes him to cough up blood occasionally and a severe depression to the point of memory loss. He couldn't receive treatment for his leg and cancer due to the lack of money and in the end gave up on it and started to smoke to cope.
Submission: Jing Wang is mute.
Mae Yakbing from Best Teacher Baek
Submission: She has a rare chronic illiness that causes her to get sick often, grow weak over time and die young.
Mu Tianchi (Jing Wang) from The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish
Shen Qiao from Thousand Autumns
Disability: Blind
Shen Qingqiu from The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System
Submission: Chronic illness. SQQ is poisoned by a fictional poison literally named “without a cure.” In universe his condition is treated much like a chronic illness that requires constant monitoring and maintenance (medication, check-ups and regular qi infusions) in order to keep in check. Even when he adheres to his treatment regime, it still has unpredictable flare-ups that could put him in serious danger if they happen at the wrong time. The flare-ups (which happen randomly and vary in length unless he receives medical aid) completely block his ability to use qi thus making in-universe actions that are normal/habitual for most his peers (such as flying) much more risky for him.
Shi Qingxuan from Heaven Official’s Blessing (TGCF)
Submission: Ends up with a broken arm and leg that is not healed
Song Qingshi from Mistakenly Saving the Villain
Submission:
ALS before he transmigrated (hopefully this counts, it's big part of his character as a doctor and he thinks about it a lot, and he even gets panicky in his new body when his limbs go numb!!) It's also not explicitly said but he's very autistic coded and canonically has a hard time understanding metaphors, communicating with other people/understanding others emotions, and when he's reading about medicine or doing experiments he hyperfixates and doesn't do anything else for the entire day. When he's with others he gets so anxious he ends up putting on a stern face, so people think he's scary when he's internally panicking
Wiki Link
Wei Wuxian from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Submission: Wei Wuxian has trauma responses to several things, in particular dogs and the sparky sparky spirit whip. There's no way he doesn't have PTSD with everything he went through.
Xiao Xingchen from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
Disability: Blind
Xue Xian from Copper Coins / Tong Qian Kan Shi
Submission:
Peddling my disabled gay dragon again... He's paraplegic for most of the story, and this affects him in his true form and all of the forms he shapeshifts into. He also gets a wheelchair at a certain point and he's so happy about it 🥺  He's also, like, such a vibrant and charming character. Hes soooooo annoying(affection and approval) and so over the top and i support him in everything. Also lets not forget that he has a tiny noodle form and curled around his bf's wrist like a bracelet. this lives rent free in my head what a move
Carrd Link
Zhou Zishu from Faraway Wanderers
Submission: He injects himself with the Nails of Seven Apertures for Three Autumns. These nails result in him becoming sickly. The effects of the nails are a limited life span, halved martial arts strength, periodic pain, a ruined sleep schedule, and withered meridians.
Wiki Link
Rejected
Ballister Blackheart from Nimona
Reason: Not from a web novel
Sapphia from High Class Homos
Reason: Not from a web novel (Webtoon)

I always forget to mention Hua Chengs interactions with Guzi when talking about his interactions with kids. Hua Cheng joking about "no I'm so scary he will be afraid of me" to Guzi while smiling and distracting Guzi with his magic butterflies. He's literally so good.

@masqce for Jin Guangyao
One silver butterfly landed on Jin Guangyao’s shoulder.  Ah so his boss is here. . .expected since he works here but still they needed confirmation before setting the butterflies to fly around him.  Those who watched thought it was a magic trick because once the butterflies dissipated Hua Cheng was there in his true form and outfit from back home.  For this purpose their mask is off to show off the eyepatch.  “Hello boss man.”

Note
tell me about these new blorbos you have reblogged very much just now. i am somewhat interested
AAAAAA thank you anon :D this is now The TGCF Zone and none of you can escape
Quick summary: these are Xie Lian and Hua Cheng from Heaven Official's Blessing, a 800k-word-long webnovel by MXTX
OKAY SO. Mò Xiāng Tóng Xiù (MXTX) is a Chinese author of webnovels. Specifically danmei or Chinese BL. She has written 3 novels, all of which have now been officially published in English, with the final volume of tgcf having come out last week. Her novels are, in order of writing: Scum Villains Self Saving System (SVSSS), Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (MDZS), and Heaven Official's Blessing (TGCF), with the latter two's acronyms coming from their original chinese titles. I really like all three of these novels, although I've been on a svsss kick recently. Also I've been a tgcf fan for about a year now, just not actively blorbo-ing.
All three novels are cultivation novels. Cultivation is this idea in Asian literature and culture that comes from Taoism and myth. Basically if you meditate and train really hard in martial arts, you will gain magic powers, and eventually you could become immortal or a god. Svsss and mdzs focus on very powerful humans, but tgcf is about gods and ghosts.
Xie Lian (the guy in white in the fanart) is the crown prince of a country called Xianle. He is a good kid, and very dedicated to trying to "save the common people". A memorable thing he did was during a parade to celebrate the gods he deviated from his fight choreography (where he was playing the emperor of the gods) to save a child falling from a building. Symbolism!!! The child "falls" for him, wink wink, and Xie Lian is not afraid to to do the right thing even if that means going against what he's supposed to do etc etc.
When he was 17 years old he became a god of martial arts. But after a tragedy befalls Xianle, he gets kicked out of heaven for handling it... Poorly. He ascends for a second time as a god of misfortune but is kicked out again within half an hour.
800 years pass and he ascends for third time, this time as a god of scraps. Unluckiest man in the world, straight-up not having fun 95% of the time, but sweet and humble because the world has repeatedly crushed him to dust but it physically Cannot Kill Him so he has to cope somehow. This is where the novel starts.
Important motif: sword in one hand, flower in the other/the flower crowned martial god. While Xie Lian is very pretty and soft, he can fuck you up. Dude is obsessed with swords.
Hua Cheng is a king of the ghosts. He's mysterious. He once beat 33 gods in duels of their choice. He wears all red. He can make it rain blood. He can summon silver "wrath" butterflies. Everyone in heaven is a little scared of him. Luckiest guy in the world (except for the whole being dead thing).
But with Xie Lian he is gentle and kind. Hes always down to hang out. He doesn't mind that Xie Lian is the bottom of the pecking order of gods, he always treats him with respect. He dresSES AS A GROOM WHEN HE GOES TO PICK UP XIE LIAN WHO IS, FOR PLOT REASONS, DRESSED AS A BRIDE.
Pretty much everything about his backstory is a spoiler, ranging from "you're supposed to figure this out about 20% of the way through the book" to "literally the big twist at the end"
Whatever could be the connection between them ;) and surely one could not describe their relationship as.... Homosexual? Look they're kissing for totally normal heterosexual reasons. Xie Lian just needed the spiritual energy.
Anyways Xie Lian may be a god of literal rubbish, but Hua Cheng is forever his most devoted follower.
I love them, even if it's Been A While since I sat down and read the source material.
Tgcf also features such memorable side characters as: two guys I fucking hate, not because they're bad people but because they're annoying and boring. Rusalka and the Shepherd Girl if they were both genderfluid and gods. Cannibal ghost you can't kill because he's your cousin. The child of the body your cannibal-ghost-cousin is possessing. Even As A God This Poor Librarian Experiences Misogyny. Quan Yizhen.
The second season of the animated show is airing right, so... I guess now is as good a time to get into tgcf as ever :)
