PBS: All Creatures Great and Small Season 4 New and Returning Cast
Boston, MA; June 27, 2023: MASTERPIECE on PBS, Channel 5, and BAFTA and Golden Globe®-winning production company Playground (Howards End, Wolf Hall) today announce the casting of the much-loved drama All Creatures Great and Small as it gears up for its fourth season.
Based on the cherished collection of stories by best-selling author James Herriot, the critically acclaimed adaptation returns to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales for a fourth season of timeless and heart-warming stories, picking up in 1940 as Churchill takes office and Europe is under serious threat. The seven new episodes (including a Christmas Special) will air on MASTERPIECE on PBS in early 2024 and Channel 5 this autumn with All3Media International as the global partner.
MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Susanne Simpson adds, “I can’t wait for our MASTERPIECE audience to see this new season of All Creatures Great and Small. It continues to be full of the warmth and humor that has made it one of our most successful series ever.” MASTERPIECE is presented on PBS by GBH Boston.
Sir Colin Callender CBE, Executive Producer and CEO of Playground said: “We are thrilled to be back in the glorious Yorkshire Dales for a fourth season of family, community and, of course, animal hijinks. Our wonderful cast and crew are all delighted to be returning to adapt more of James Herriot’s joyful and life-affirming stories.”
Season 4 sees Nicholas Ralph reprise his role as young country vet James Herriot, now happily married to Helen Herriot, played by Rachel Shenton (White Gold, For Her Sins). Samuel West (Slow Horses, Small Axe) returns as James’ capricious and erratic mentor Siegfried Farnon while Anna Madeley (Time, Patrick Melrose) continues as Mrs. Hall, matriarch of Skeldale House. Patricia Hodge (Miranda, A Very English Scandal) also reprises her role as the wonderfully eccentric Mrs. Pumphrey, and Derek as her adored and pampered Pekingese Tricki.
With Tristan away serving in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, Siegfried and James bring in some extra hands to help around the practice. Neve McIntosh (Shetland) joins the cast as highly efficient bookkeeper Miss Harbottle, alongside James Anthony-Rose (Slow Horses, Pennyworth) as studious undergraduate vet student Richard Carmody who arrives at Skeldale as part of his placement under the guidance of James.
A colorful ensemble of farmers, animals and townsfolk living in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1940s will also star, including Tony Pitts and Imogen Clawson as Helen’s father and sister, Richard and Jenny Alderson, Paul Copley as Ned Clough, Cleo Sylvestre MBE as Anne Chapman, James Bolam MBE as Mr. Dakin and Will Thorp as Gerald Hammond and Sam Retford as FO Woodham.
Louise Pedersen, CEO of All3Media International, commented: “Over three seasons All Creatures Great and Small has offered heartwarming, escapist viewing that has connected with audiences and become a firm fan favorite all around the world, and as Playground’s wonderful series enters its fourth season I am delighted to continue to build the brand globally.”
Returning for Season 4 is Executive Producer Ben Vanstone (A Gentleman in Moscow, The Last Kingdom) who will write the Christmas special. Writer Jamie Crichton (Three Pines, Grantchester) also returns, this time as lead writer and Executive Producer. Joining them for season four are writers Maxine Alderton (Emmerdale Farm, Doctor Who) and Helen Raynor (A Discovery of Witches, Call the Midwife).
Andy Hay (The Last Kingdom, Jamestown) is Lead Director and will direct episodes 1 and 2. Stewart Svaasand (Tin Star, Death in Paradise) will direct episodes 3, 4 and 6, while BAFTA winner Jordan Hogg (Ralph and Katie, Screw) will direct episode 5 and the Christmas Special.
All Creatures Great and Small is a timeless classic that continues to be much loved by generations. Never out of print, the books have sold 60 million copies internationally becoming a global cultural phenomenon with devoted fans around the world. With a sharp focus on community and its importance in our lives, Herriot’s world and spirit is a very much needed antidote to the challenges of modernity and reminds us all that belonging to a community makes us part of something greater than ourselves.
Season 4 is currently filming on location in Yorkshire.
All Creatures Great and Small is a Playground production for Channel 5 and MASTERPIECE in association with All3Media International. Executive Producers are: Colin Callender, Melissa Gallant, Jamie Crichton and Ben Vanstone for Playground, Susanne Simpson and Rebecca Eaton for MASTERPIECE, and Louise Pedersen and David Swetman for All3Media International.

RIP Dr. Ruth, Richard Simmons, and Shannen Doherty
I was on vacation and wanted to combine multiple deaths that occured during my getaway:
Remembering Dr. Ruth Westheimer 1928-2024
Sex therapist and talk show host Dr. Ruth has died at 96. She became an icon in the Reagan 80s for her frank discussion of sexuality, most notably on her TV talk show Dr. Ruth Westheimer  (Lifetime 1984-1991). She was a staple of TV talk shows in the 80s and was often imitated, including Mary Gross who played her on SNL. She appeared as a fictionalized version of herself in Electric Dreams, an episode of Moonlighting, and an episode of Melrose Place. Worth checking out is the 2019 documentary Ask Dr. Ruth directed by Ryan White (who I interviewed in 2022).

Remembering Richard Simmons 1948-2024
Fitness guru Richard Simmons has died at 76. Of all TV aerobics instructors he was one of the biggest personalities. In the 1980s he had many fitness videos including "Sweatin' to the Oldies" and like Dr. Ruth, he was a frequent guest on talk shows. He appeared in a 1994 episode of SNL (in a Coffee Talk sketch) and Eddie Murphy portrayed Little Richard Simmons, a mashup impression of Simmons and Little Richard. Within pop culture, Simmons appeared in several movies and TV shows as a fictionalized version of himself on a number of shows including a 1985 episode of Amazing Stories and some episodes of Arrested Development. In recent years there have been podcasts about him and there's a biopic in the works with Pauly Shore set to play him.

Remembering Shannen Doherty 1971-2024
Sad news that actress Shannen Doherty died at 53 after a long battle with cancer. She was actually an early crush of mine circa late 80s. My favorite performances of hers were: Heather Duke in the 80s teen masterpiece Heathers, as Brendan Walsh on Fox's Beverly Hills, 90210 from 1990-1994, and as Rene in Kevin Smith's Mallrats. Smith's follow up to Clerks was a bigger budget movie and thanks to Doherty he had a big name star in it. When I met Smith in 1997, I had him sign my 1995 Film Threat with him and Doherty on the cover and he jokingly drew a mustache on her! I was a fan of the first 2 or 3 seasons of 90210, but it's really sad that since this teen show that was on when I was a teen, we've lost Luke Perry in 2019 and now Doherty (for the teen cast that is).

Jason Lee and Doherty in Mallrats
She got her start as a child / teen actress. Early roles included voice acting in The Secret of NIMH, Night Shift (still my favorite Ron Howard movie), TV's Our House (NBC 1986-1988), and then the 90210 era. She played herself in an episode of Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, and she returned to the View Askewnaverse as herself in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. She hosted SNL in 1993 with the great "Denise Show" sketch where Adam Sandler is pining for his ex played by Doherty.
Tumblr media
Alf and Doherty
In 1987 to promote NBC's Saturday Morning TV season, they had a promotional special Alf Loves a Mystery, with Alf trying to solve a mystery...with the help of NBC TV shows. Doherty, who was on Our House at the time, appeared as a The Lady in Red. After the passing of Alf's Benji Gregory and now Doherty, it's a tough week for Alf fans like me :(

Hewson Rocket 1946
Coachcraft, Ltd. was formed by three ex-employees of Howard 'Dutch' Darrin when he sold his California business to Packard on August 1st of 1939. The names of these three individuals were Burt Chalmers, Rudy Stoessel, and Paul Erdos. They established their business at 8671 Melrose Avenue in Hollywood, California in 1940. They catered to craft a wide variety of vehicles, from common, low-priced vehicles, to rare, luxury cars. The designs they created would have a lasting impact on the automotive community. They were regularly featured in magazines and were highly sought after by the rich and the famous.
In 1945, William Hewson raised capital to form the Hewson Pacific Corp. and planned to produce the 'Hewson Rocket' to be sold for $1,000. Stoessel fabricated the body shape and Erdos welded the aluminum panels together. Hewson's idea was to give the body form a very aerodynamic shape with no projections anywhere - headlights covered with glass, tail-light lenses flush, and no outside door handles.
The mid-engine is a flathead Ford V8 coupled to a three-speed manual transmission and a top speed of 90 mph.
Hewson's capital was depleted by the time the car's body was finished and he did not have the $16,000 owed to Coachcraft. They kept the car in their front showroom until it was auctioned off in 1959 to a used car dealer in Minneapolis for $650.

monument mythos/nixonverse rambling lets GO (warning for spoilers btw)
okay, so i think that the "grief makes you a monster" thing ties into three major parts of the series. 1. james dean setting out to kill howard melrose, 2. the house in the ocean/crescent king, 3. everett's entire character arc
1. james' reaction to the death of eunice was (i think, i'm not sure) one of the first examples of this grief. of course, the very first example was with the canyon crowns- being turned into inhuman beings by being too curious, and then, presumably, grieving the lives they lost, and their pain being used to lead others to their deaths. however, this is the first example where someone could have chosen something else and didn't. the canyon crowns practically had no choice in leading others to their demise, since they had to get vinegar and/or protection so they wouldn't be found by tourists and such. james' reaction is also irrational, but so is grief. it is his irrational mind (pained by losing his sister and some random journalist hearing her last words instead of him) is what compels him to crash a plane into the side of the one that melrose was on- without regard for the other passengers (considering it was likely a passenger flight) and this is how he was turned into a monster. he is still undeniably human (although many believe that he has some sort of power to charm others, but i think he's just like that) but he has been changed, and he hurt others because of his grief.
2. the house in the ocean was, at first, based on alex's father's death, but i think it does fit pretty well in the rest of the series. i didn't get to see the series when he originally uploaded it, so if there was anything discussed/uploaded on that version, i don't know about it. however, i think the whole premise of the series (especially the cartoons) is really important to the monument mythos. the cartoons, i believe, represent forgetting things about someone over time- and as your brain struggles to make connections, it changes bit by bit. sure, one can be reminded of what it really was, but unless that reminder encompasses all of their memories, some things will slip through the cracks. i also think that the house being made to turn into the crescent king represents someone's grief being used for something they wouldnt normally want. after, the king "can't stop crying"- likely mourning the person he once was. through the series, he'd been used multiple times, by the US (jesus in vietnam) and the lunarians, so him mourning the person he once was, helping others and preventing bad decisions, shows how he grieves for himself.
3. everett my boy. he's overall my favorite character in the series, awesome, super cool, all that. i think his grief is pretty face value- he is grieving the time he lost in wonderland, but he is using that grief to help others. he doesn't want anyone to go through what he did, so he decides to sacrifice himself to save everyone from the martian serpent. this also goes for the freedom statue and air force one angel- they had been used, had done terrible things, etc etc, but they see that the martian serpent is more dangerous than anything else. everett following the copy of virginia also shows that, despite his situation, he wants to help others- and he hopes that one of the times he finds the real her to get her out.
if one is watching this series, i recommend it be watched when sad or grieving. it hit twice as hard as it would have if i didn't watch it during one of those times, and it still holds a huge place in my heart. sometimes, i even watch videos about the series itself because i want to see someone else discover the beauty of the monument mythos.
