This 4th of July I’m stealing the patriotism euphoria that’s usually associated with assholes idolizing the worst attributes of this country because fuck ‘em I live here too and remembering the things this country actually got Right is an important exercise when trying to rally anyone to want to defend it in November SO putting my money where my mouth is I’ll start easy and say I really like National Parks!! It’s rad how many of them there are and how they’re actual set up to preserve some of the most beautiful wild areas in our country while still letting people visit to enjoy and experience nature!! (Less important but I love how they put national parks on the quarters I think that’s real fun)

Obviously the structure of an episodic series often requires characters to go from 'complete strangers' to 'close friends/family' in an unusually short amount of time. I get it.

Writers need a 'new guy' in the group to ask questions about the setting that the audience can't, but still (especially in comedy shows) want the fun dynamics that come from all the main cast knowing each other super well. It's one of those functional tropes like L-Shaped Blankets where you're required to suspend your sense of disbelief.

Having said that, I love when writers choose to take this trope and retroactively justify it by later on revealing that the Seemingly Normal Everyman Character is actually as unhinged as the rest of the group— it's just that their weirdness manifests specifically as an ability to form found family dynamics with literally any group they join, almost immediately after joining.

Like, you assumed that they just fit in so well because your group has a special vibe, but then you accidentally left them in the supermarket for like five minutes and by the time you realised and went back they were already Blood Brothers with the cashier.

Characters who are like friendly dogs in that you can put them essentially anywhere, with anyone, and they will just be like “welp! Guess this is my New Family now” and just go along with it.

I know little of the Keepers and their cultural norms, but I suppose it should not come as a surprise that matters of grooming and personal maintenance should carry a more pragmatic connotation for those who live in such isolation - or perhaps our friend is simply strange, regardless of his context. I must admit: it was no small comfort to me, in those frigid days heralding the twilight of the Dragonsong War, to discover that our champion did not share our Sharlayan intuition toward personal space. Our more guarded companions don't always share my gratitude for the attention, but I believe that after our long estrangement, even the coldest of hearts could not fail to be warmed by such a gesture.

i wonder what quirrel's job actually was

we get some snippets in game that yes, he was an apprentice of sorts to monomon & knows many things about hallownest in general -- but overall, we have no idea what actual things he may have researched

most fan interpretations of this i see make him very culturally aware in mostly a socio-economic-political way. like he's done some sort of political science degree. it makes sense due to his wide knowledge of the kingdom's intertwined politics and society.

however, he still seems to have some sort of appreciation for the physical landscape of hallownest? take the blue lake for example, him wanting to see the source of the rain or his comments on the hot springs.

everything could simply just be seen as a thirst for knowledge, but then again i think quirrel is much of an observer as he is as someone who just wants to learn: it's also much about experience to him.

therefore, putting everything i have together, quirrel simply must be:

a geographer

I've been watching the David Suchet Poirot again and it's occurred to me how funny some of the story settings are if you consider Poirot as a character. Poirot canonically does not enjoy nature. He canonically gets seasick. He exclusively wears patent leather shoes and three piece suits. He likes everything to be square and even and just so. By rights the last thing this man should be doing is traipsing through the Egyptian desert or taking long cruises on the Mediterranean. At most he should be crossing the European countryside by train, moving between the manicured estates of the various rich people whose murders he's solved and whose jewels he has recovered.

And yet. Here I am watching him mince across an archeological dig in Appointment with Death. It's been long enough since I read the actual books that I don't remember whether Agatha Christie ever bothered to justify him taking these trips and being in these places. I'm sure there's a Watsonian approach to it. But the Doylist explanation is so much funnier. Like it's the ultimate Putting the Guy in a Situation. Ms. Christie wanted to do a murder with archeology lightly flavored with orientalism, so off Poirot went to the desert. She wanted a murder on a boat, so off Poirot went on a cruise. Does he actually want to be in the desert, or on a boat? Doesn't matter, find yourself a linen suit and shine your spats, Hercule, you're going. Good luck, and don't forget to pack your mustache wax!

seetttthing scalding hot take but honestly i feel no sympathy or theoretical sadness about altea being blown to bits. the few alteans we DO know are all assholes. clearly the universe isn't missing much. in fact, if you look at the only canon universe that DOES still have altea--- they go on to be just as bad as the galran empire if not even worse.

so yeah. maybe zarkon did the universe a small favor before he went truly off the deep end.

edit; just found out alteans destroyed Diabaazal long before zarkon destroyed altea. nothing ANYONE says can convince me alteans are anything *but* the real villain of the show. they got what they deserved.

i absolutely am obsessed with time travel fics. Cus i just love the idea of ur fav character just traveling to the past and fixing everything.

And i especially absolutely adore time travel in yoi fics. Love the usual time loop and other ones, BUT my absolute favorite has to be where yuuri goes to the past before or somewhere near the time of Sochi (before or after) and just decides "fu(ck) it" or like goes "what monstrosity was I cooking up?? why are my costumes so ugly???"—this one usually happens in fics where he time travels to a really young age.

and i know it's probably not relevant to the time travel aspect BUT it is to ME,,, anyways I love the social media or reactions of the people around yuuri. I mean this is usually a given for me in any time travel ff but with yoi I JUST LOVE IT. like imagine mari or his parents being concerned because "yuuri why are you acting so strangely? wait why are you crying now??" And like "Yuuri, you're spending so much time on the ice."

And now the social media,,, like I love it so much whenever I see snippets of the world around them through social media.. it is very very fun. But with time travel, I absolutely love seeing the fans on (fake)social media be like "who are you guys rooting for" "that yuuri kid has so much potential, a shame blahblah" to the pipeline of them being "HOLY SH(it)?? this kid got some moves"
