Threads, Meta's new social media app, has signed up 100 million new users less than a week since its launch last Wednesday, making it the fastest-growing app in history.

Like other social media apps, users probably barely scanned − or skipped − the terms and conditions for what information Threads can collect, share and sell about them.

Meta probably already had a lot of information about users because Threads is built upon its Instagram platform.

So how much does Threads already know about you, and what can it do with that data? Here are a few reasons to be concerned about your privacy.

What information does Threads collect?

Social media platforms monetize user data by selling relevant ads based on your location and activity, but, along with the usual app privacy requests like browsing history and location data, Threads also asks for financial information, health and fitness data, diagnostics and a nefarious-sounding "sensitive info."

Many users have voiced concern over Threads for its 14-point list of data permissions you're granting Meta to use the app. Twitter, by comparison, has 10 of these.

"I would say it's at the outer boundaries of what's usually expected, which is to be expected from its connection to Facebook, a brand long known for being especially hungry to take in user data and commercialize it in different ways," says Dan Ackerman, the new editor-in-chief at Gizmodo, a leading technology, science and culture news publication.

Android users can toggle off some of the data requests from the app, while the Apple App Store is "more take-it-or-leave it," Ackerman said.

"It also doesn't help that there's no browser-based fully functional version of Threads right now, and so you have to use the app version," he said.

Meta declined my request for comment and clarification.

Is Threads data collection worse than Twitter?

It's not necessarily malicious, suggests Tim Bajarin, a veteran technology analyst and Chairman of the San Jose, California-based market research firm Creative Strategies. "Users should know this Threads data list is pulled directly from Instagram, and it's all tied to their advertising engine when they start to monetize Threads.

"When you sign off on financial info, for example, they're not looking at your bank statements or anything," Bajarin said.

Rather, Threads collects what you're posting about and liking, where you are, and whether you bought something through a third-party site, app or game you logged into using your connected Facebook/Instagram ID (usually to avoid creating a new password altogether).

Bajarin said users are granting Meta access for future advertising.

"Meta isn't giving you a free app out of the goodness of their heart − they're there to make money, which is mostly from advertising."

Threads can collect and save this information, and the data can also be shared with third-party services that connect to your Threads profile.

Can you deactivate Threads?

Yes, but you cannot delete it without also deleting Instagram, Bajarin said.

"Meta built (Threads) on the Instagram infrastructure, on top of the program itself, and so it would be very difficult to uninstall one and not both – at least the way it's engineered today. ... They could eventually be spun out to be completely separate apps," Bajarin said.

To deactivate (but not delete) your Threads account, Adam Mosseri − the Instagram boss who now spearheads the Threads app – says you can choose to hide your Threads profile and content, delete individual Threads posts and set your profile to private, as reported by USA TODAY contributor Jennifer Jolly.

"Threads is powered by Instagram, so right now it's just one account, but we're looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately,” he posted.

Ackerman said the fact Threads is built on Instagram is actually a boon for Meta and users, "as it's especially easy to sign up for, has no wait list, and is simple to use." But "in order to delete your Threads account after you sign up, you’ll need to delete your Instagram account, as well, which reminds me of the difficulty people had deleting their Facebook accounts in the past, and how there was a lot of fine print about what data Facebook would keep unless you jumped through extra hoops."

Is the Threads app safe?

Threads is asking for more permissions than Twitter, so it boils down to your comfort level.

Though some of the privacy permissions seem ludicrous – granting Threads access to health and activity data and other "sensitive info" on a smartphone just seems wrong – no one is forcing users to install and use Threads or any other social media app that monetizes its free platform by delivering personalized, contextual ads to you.

Threads is available in more than 100 countries, but perhaps it's no surprise it isn't available in the Europe Union just yet: Meta was forced to pay more than $400 million by EU regulators for forcing users to accept targeted ads.

Personally, I am using and enjoying Threads quite a bit but wish there was more clarity about how my data is collected and used. And I'm disappointed Meta declined to clarify things.

I select "Ask not to track" on all iPhone apps to reduce an app's visibility into my web browsing activity, and I have a virtual private network (VPN) on my computer for extra privacy, but perhaps it's true there is nothing truly free in this world – it's just up to each person to decide whether the cost is worth it.

Why AO3 Works and Why You Should Stay There

I’m assuming most of the people posting about what AO3 allows are children. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does explain why people don’t understand why people would defend AO3.

It’s because any alternative site that relies on moderation of any kind for what’s allowed will become Livejournal.

Everyone used LJ 20 years ago. Seriously, asking someone if they had a Livejournal was as common as asking someone if they had a Facebook.

The site got huge. It was sold several times. And between owners, moderation tried to reign in what was and wasn’t allowed.

Which was a huge undertaking. It was literally not possible for LJ to hire enough people to moderate, so they created bots which would do the work for them. “Top of the line” bots with a small margin of error. Bots that would delete the unwanted fic and allow other fics to remain.

If you know how AI works, you know that even TODAY there is no way to program AI to do exactly what you want it to do. If you direct an AI to delete all offending fics, it will find the easiest path to success wherein it uses the least memory and resources to do so. And it WILL delete every offending fic.

It will also learn that all offending fics contain certain words. Maybe it’s the word ‘fic.’ Maybe it’s the word ‘sex.’ To make sorting the good from the bad easier, it will now discard anything that uses either of those two words.

Now it’s got a bigger pool to learn from, the AI finds that fics that use the word ‘sex’ also sometimes use the word ‘gender.’ The AI decides that fics using the word ‘gender’ must also be deleted for being undesirable, and suddenly the AI is deleting fics about transgender characters.

This is essentially what happened on Livejournal. You’ll sometimes still see people posting about “the great strikethrough” in which accounts that used certain words too much, even if they weren’t part of the intended purge, had their accounts suspended. Accounts that were havens for victims of abuse were deleted, for example, just because the AI found certain key words it had deemed inappropriate.

And this happened so many times to so many people that it was impossible for the Livejournal staff to keep up with all the review requests. It would often take weeks for an account to be reinstated, and by that time, the author had moved on.

If AO3 decides to moderate more than they already do, they will never have enough volunteers to read every story that’s published. They will never be able to adequately sort through every request that comes in. Because perhaps YOU have good intentions. You will only report fics that violate the TOS. But someone else will report every fic of someone they don’t personally like, even though there’s no violation.

This happens on Instagram. I recently helped a friend recover her account because an art thief reported the original artist for stealing art. There were not enough people to really look into whether or not the original artist was innocent, so they just suspended her account. It took WEEKS to get it back.

This is what you’re asking for on Ao3. I know you don’t understand this, or your initial reaction is to say “that won’t happen,” but it WILL. Every time any site has gone to heavier moderation, non-offending accounts are lost in the shuffle.

I can’t believe you didn’t learn from tumblr’s handling of banning certain images. It’s the same fucking thing. C’mon, guys. Use your heads here.

Sky

Has an Instagram. Its mostly dead aside from the most occasional of dog pics. Sky is a little scared of ending up with bad press after how often his parents beat having a good image into his head. He's also one of those people who post text to Instagram, bc it's his only social media

Sky has media training, but due to hiding his identity for most of his life never actually put this into practice. He has an edge, and had a naturally calmish slightly charismatic personality so he gets along fine with being on Tv, it just takes some getting use to. He ends up on tv and in magazines anytime he steps outside because Prince of Eraylon who's dating the Dragon Flame Princess of Domino, is the fucking headline of century and everyone knows it. He accepts this as a part of life and tries not to do anything stupid when the cameras can see him

Brandon

Stella's Instagram is a couples Instagram. Who do you think posts all those pictures of Stella to her Instagram? Yes her but she's too busy posing you see. He also posts an obscene amount of pictures of himself along side Stella. For the bisexual audience. He has a private Twitter just to see all the bullshit that goes down, without getting involved

Brandon, as Sky's stand in for multiple years, has both media training and a lot of experience with the media. He's used to Eraylon standards so he often comes off as overly formal, but very respectful kind and charming, and he's essentially the old media's darling. So many think pieces about how chivalry isn't dead because Brandon, completely unaware that he still flirts around for fun (with Stella's permission of course). The media paint Stella and Brandon as a yin yang couple, when a quick look at their dual Instagram would disprove this very quickly. Brandon has no clue how he ended up in this scenario

Timmy

Oh sure he has social media. Their all privated and completely fucking empty because holy shit FUCK that. He doesn't need reporters talking about his most recent likes on Twitter ok? He has some alt accounts but social media is very stressful and he rather not

Bold of anyone to assume he'd end up on Tv lest he was fucking dragged. He does NOT want to deal with the whole magical dimension making fun of his stutter ok? He already has like 3 older brothers, and 2 younger ones that do that for him. He is good on the teasing. Though he'll do email interviews, these tend to get long and rambly tho

Riven

Once he realized that fame was slowly coming their way he deleted all his old social media. No body needs to see what 13 year old Riven was tweeting. Aside from that he has a Twitter where he mostly just talks about Musa or posts pictures of Musa. Riven is a private person, but also likes attention. The dichotomy of man. He wants to be acknowledged in his field by his peers, not be a public personality. He's every Musa stan's dream bc he posts pictures of her and just spouts off random facts about her constantly. They also tweet at eachother constantly! Not to mention his therapist has done an amazing job at convincing him not to argue with idiots on Twitter, he still subtweets them but still. He rarely posts about himself, when he does it's mostly complaining that he accidentally fucked something up or about how cute he thinks fairy animals/pixies/fairy pets/selkies ect are for like multiple posts straight

Riven is not intentionally on TV. Ever. The idea of that many people watching his every move, after s1, makes his skin crawl. He appreciates the reporting on his achievements in his field and with the Winx, and passively seeths about the reporting on his past fuck ups, but you won't catch him doing an interview unless it's with Musa

Helia

Helia has never quite given a shit about social media. Unfortunately Twitter is made for fighting people and Helia is 80% unhinged violence by volume. Constantly in Twitter arguments, so many fucking sub tweets, and throwing enough shade to sap Stella's enegry. He also posts his art/poetry in-between absolutely fucking destroying the poor idiot who called Flora the most useless of the Winx Club

He's fine on Tv. Helia has an ever present confidence in literally everything he does (really Helia is never caught slipping in the earlier seasons), and he's already well spoken. He handles being on tv with the grace of someone who met many different royal families as a child. He'd probably be interviewed more if he wasn't so short/blunt in person, which makes him kinda a shit conversationalist. He's better at interviewing someone, writing an essay at someone, instead of answering any question in detail lol. Sometimes an interviewer will catch him on something he's passionate about and he'll talk for an hour straight

Nabu

He has a Twitter, he's also a nightmare. He's not like....mean or starting shit for no reason, he just tweets like a man in his 40s. You get inspirational quotes, accidentally qoute tweeting, shit blurry photos of Aisha. No one quite knows if he's fucking with them or is really that bad with technology.....Nabu is still trying to figure out how to change his header. Nabu is the unproblematic fav of the guys in the Winx world, his Twitter is beloved for him being infectiously positive while completely not understanding what the fuck is going on

Nabu is much better in person than he is online. He kinda falls into the same role as Brandon. Media training form a very conservative planet making him come off as ultra respectful and polite, but unlike Brandon, Nabu is unlikely to end up in a scandal lmao. He handles just about all in person appreances for or with Aisha because he knows she hates him, and is the master of talking a lot and saying fucking nothing. (Brandon can also do this because he was required to make small talk for so many years, but it comes to Nabu naturally). He also deals with hostile media presences the best bc he doesn't really react to them and he also can absolutely gut someone while staying calm and looking reasonable..... Someone tried to shame Aisha for not wanting to give up her freedom and her verbally annihilated them for her <3, bc he knows that she stuggles with public speaking

Chapter 17:

The plane landed, Finn was the first to turn his phone off airplane mode and suddenly it was blowing up, twitter, Instagram, snapchat, tiktok, even Facebook for chrissakes. He was getting messages from family, friends and even the team. He put his phone on silent when he started getting annoyed glances from other passengers.

Logan was next, not as many notifications but still a lot. Leo had a few but none of them had to do with Finn and Logan. Finn was scrolling furiously through his notifications, getting more and more nervous as he kept scrolling. Then he saw the first twitter notification.

Hacked.

His eyes widened and his heart was pounding, Logan was the person in the middle this time, he grips Logan’s arm tight. Logan looks over to him a bit groggy and confused. Finn is in complete panic. Logan raises an eyebrow asking what's wrong. Finn just shakes his head and shoves his phone in his pocket.

They get off the plane and everything is normal, getting their bags and walking towards the closest exit Finn stops walking, causing Noelle to run into the back of him. They all look outside and notice all the media waiting.

What was going on…

“Noelle, Leo can you guys go out a different door and take a taxi to meet us at the apartment? Call Sirius while you’re on the way.”

“Finn what's going on?” Leo is staring outside for a moment before he meets Finn’s eyes.

“Please just do what I ask, I’ll explain more if you don’t hear anything on the way.” Leo and Noelle share a look and then nod, walking towards the exit that is two doors away, Noelle calling a taxi while Leo calls Sirius.

“Finn?” Logan takes his hand, running his thumb over the freckled man’s knuckles. He is looking at the media and they seem to have noticed them, taking pictures through the glass. The flashes put a spot in his eyes when he blinks. Finn has his jaw set in a way that Logan rarely sees, he is angry. Something isn’t right.

“Keep a hand on me, you know how terrible the press can be.” Finn grips his hand tighter as they walk towards the doors with all the press, hoping Noelle and Leo got out safe. The door opens and the mingled words of shouting reporters who Finn knows are just trying to do their job but it's an annoying job.

“LOGAN! Does Finn know you’ve been cheating on him” A female reporter yelled out from the middle of the pack. Logan snaps his head around and is about to answer before Finn drags him forward.

“Finn, do you know the man in the video!?” A male reporter shouted at them and kept asking more and more questions until Finn couldn’t take it anymore he turned around. The shouting, the flashes, the microphones in his face, it was all too much. He was overwhelmed and shutting down.

“Fuck off!” Before turning back around and walking into the first floor of the parking garage, some of the reporters with just pad and pens followed them through the barriers. He ignores them as he unlocks the vehicle. Logan and Finn toss their bags in before they get in themselves.

“Let me see your phone.” Logan is so thankful for the tinted window in this car. Finn hands him his phone and it already has Logan’s face ID so he unlocks the phone and starts looking through everything on Finn’s twitter that was posted. There was everything from Finn’s own nudes to Logan’s. He felt sick to his stomach as he scrolled, then he saw it.

“They posted the video… The video of me and Leo in the mirror. I didn’t know you saved that on your phone, I thought it was just snapchat.”

“They hacked everything of mine, Lo, Baby… I’m so sorry.” Logan hears the crack in Finn’s voice and just places his hand over Finn’s on the console between them. It was a silent drive home.

When Noelle and Leo reached the apartment the press was outside, luckily they couldn't get into the parking garage or the actual building. They make their way inside and see most of the team already waiting by the door.

“What’s going on?” Leo asks Sirius as he unlocks the door and lets everyone in. James turns on the news but nothing is on but the weather right now, Lily and Celeste are there and go to the kitchen with food they already made. Leo was getting more and more confused.

“Finn was hacked, every account of his on social media has posted pictures of him and Logan but there is one video and we know it’s you.” Sirius watches as Leo’s face pales immediately. “No one else knows though, they are trying to call Logan a cheater and Finn a cuck but no one can figure out who you are.”

“What’s the video?” Leo closes the door behind everyone and moves him and Noelle's bags to line the wall so people don’t trip, he’d move them into his room later.

“A video of you and Logan in a mirror, it’s dark and you don’t show either of your faces but people are going wild for it. It was released on twitter first… then everywhere else.” Leo nods and politely excuses himself to the kitchen to help with whatever because that is his safe space.

A half hour later Logan and Finn stumble in the apartment. Finn says nothing as he walks over to Sirius and just starts apologizing for how he has ruined the team's reputation, while Logan takes a slow seat next to Dumo who doesn’t hesitate to pull him into a supportive hug.

“It’s going to be okay.” Dumo mumbles into Logan’s hair rubbing his hand up and down his back as Logan sniffles. “This could have happened to any of us. Hell, it already happened to Remus and Sirius.”

“Not in the same way.” Logan’s voice is muffled in Dumo’s chest and the older man just holds him tighter. “Maman and Papa are going to kill me…” Logan hands his phone to Dumo and it's already unlocked, messages from his parents are on screen. He takes Logan’s phone and holds it up to where he can see it better. Messages just saying horrible things about Logan and Leo for some reason.

“Logan-”

“Shush! Laisse-moi tranquille!” Dumo sighs and closes Logan’s phone, putting it far away from them on the coffee table as he just holds his son.

“Finn, you did nothing wrong! Stop apologizing!” Sirius pulls Finn into a tight hug and Finn tries to pull out of it but Sirius is much stronger. Holding him there while angry tears threaten to fall from Finn’s eyes. Once he melts into Sirius’ hold he starts talking.

“I just ruined my boys' lives…”

“Finn, this wasn’t you.” Finn doesn’t answer, he just slowly pulls away from Sirius when he hears his phone ringing. It’s Alex, he is supposed to go to his wedding this weekend and Finn is thinking he is going to uninvite him.

“I should take this on the balcony.” Sirius gives him a firm pat on the shoulder, resting his hand for a second to give it a squeeze before Finn brushes him off and walks outside. “Alex.” Finn immediately starts crying at the voice of his brother. “Alex- I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to ruin your wedding.”

“What? Finn, I’m calling to make sure you are okay, this has nothing to do with my wedding.” Finn cries even harder, having to support himself on the railing as his tears drip over the edge. “Finn please talk to me.”

“I don’t know what to say, I ruined their lives, Alex! I ruined the people who I love most. How could I do that?” He squats down keeping one hand on the railing and pressing his forehead to the cold metal of the wall of the balcony.

“Finn, Bud, I know you love to blame everything on yourself but I promise you this is not your fault.” Finn lets out a pained noise as his brother speaks.

“Alex, I was the one who saved the pictures! It’s internet 101!” He takes a deep breath as he starts to become exhausted from crying, no more tears were coming but he felt as though his breathing wouldn’t slow down.

“What? You think I don’t have pictures of my fiancé on my phone?” Finn laughs a tiny bit as his breathing starts to go back to normal. “Finn, you need to take down all your accounts before this gets on the news.”

“I tried, I got locked out of them on the way home when Logan started deleting them as I drove us home.”

“Then I guess you need to get in contact with Twitter and whatever else… Then you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and make up a plan to play the media.” Finn is silent for a moment, thinking about how they have a game this Friday, the day he also leaves for Florida in the middle of the night.

“Play the media… That's probably the smartest thing you’ve ever said.”

“Hey!”

“Love you Alex but I need to talk to Sirius and Remus.” He hangs up the phone and rounds up Logan, Remus and Sirius. Pushing them into Leo’s room. “Okay so… how do we fuck with the media?”

Leo was oddly quiet, Reg noticed and placed a hand on his arm. Smiling a little bit at each other Reg could see just how scared Leo is. He is in his head and it's worrying him. Leo isn’t exactly the best at taking care of his mental health and his stress baking foods he doesn’t even like is definitely a sign.

“Leo, why don’t we go have a smoke?” Leo just shakes his head, Clay is sick right now and Thomas didn’t let him come here because he has been ill since they got back home. “Leo, can we at least sit down?”

“These need to be finished Reg. If you want to go sit then sit.” Reg sighs and decides not to pester him anymore. Going over to sit on the couch. He is brought away from texting Clay to the news loudly playing over the TV.

Leo and everyone else in the kitchen move to behind the couch to look at the screen. He was hoping it wasn’t going to be anything about them and what was posted. He was praying to any God he could think of that it wasn’t them.

His prayers never seem to work.

“Breaking News! Finn O’Hara, winger for the infamous Gryffindor Lions hockey team, has recently had some pictures and a video of him, his boyfriend… and a secret man leak onto the internet. We had reporters at the airport earlier today to see if we could get any statements from the two love birds as they made their way back home. We were trying to get answers but O’Hara and Tremblay seemed to be avoiding answering anything. Here is the footage we got from earlier”

Footage from Finn and Logan walking out of the airport shows up on the screen. Finn looking like thunder, Logan just looking confused. Leo watches Logan snap his head towards the reporter who yelled something at him, he didn’t know what was said because his ears felt like they were full of cotton. Finn leads them further on into the crowd but Finn suddenly turns around and spits a ‘Fuck off’ their way before ducking into the parking garage.

“Tremblay seems to be confused as to what was going on while O’Hara was getting defensive. The question everyone is asking is, who is this mystery man? And will this seemingly perfect relationship fall apart because of him? We have the video that was leaked here and we can only show the top half as the bottom is quite scandalous.”

Then suddenly Leo is on TV, they stick to their word only showing the top half of the video, it was darker than Leo remembers it being. He watches as Logan’s mouth moves but there is no audio… just a caption.

Finn.

The week flies by, Leo is the only person allowed to leave the apartment besides for practice, they had a game tonight against Ravenclaw. They won 2-0. Finn and Logan, of course, were being interviewed. Sat together in their stalls, sweaty and still in all their gear, they were very touchy on camera. Logan had kissed Finn’s cheek a couple of times, Finn’s arm was over Logan and he was watching Logan like he was the most important thing in the room.

“So, everyone wants to know. Who is the man in the video?” A reporter turns her microphone towards Finn who just shrugs and smiles.

“Like you said, he's the man in the video.” This shocks everyone for a minute because the camera flashes again.

“Did you like seeing another man with Logan?”

“I wouldn’t have kept it if I didn’t like it.” Finn flashes his most charming smile.

“Logan, is this a random man or someone you know.”

“I know every inch of them.” He smiles as Finn snickers.

“Are you two in an open relationship?”

“Nope!” They both answer at the same time before sharing a chaste kiss. Logan playfully pushes Finn’s cheek away from him and they start laughing again.

“Are you swingers?” They both start laughing and shaking their heads for the millionth time in this interview.

“Non, our relationship is closed and we aren’t swingers. Sorry you just aren’t our type.” The whole locker room gets a chuckle out of that and Marlene kicks the media out of the room so everyone can change. Logan and Finn get changed and finally feel like an entire house has been lifted off their shoulders. Finn was leaving tonight and Leo was meeting Logan at the Dumias house to watch the kids for the weekend.

It was going well. Hours later after Finn kissed his boys goodbye, Logan at the parking lot at the stadium, and Leo at the apartment after grabbing his bags. Maybe they were more than just a chaste kiss on the lips but it was great.

Leo was on his way over to Logan’s with a little surprise next to him. He waltzed up to the door with a small carrier in his arms. Adele answers the door and smiles at him.

“They already have articles about Logan and Finn posted and they are amazing just wait until you hear- what are you holding?” Leo laughs at her as she lets him in. Not giving anything away he walks into the living room, Adele hot on his heels. He sees Logan on his stomach with Marc sitting on his back playing with a hot wheel car on his shoulder blades. Katie is sitting by his head as he rests his head on his hands as she rambles on about something that Leo didn’t catch.

“Leo’s here! And he has a gift.” Adele announces, all the other kiddo’s get up and scramble over to Leo. Hugging him around his legs. Logan slowly stands, starting to get sore from the game that night, stretching his arms above his head before he spins around to see Leo holding a cardboard carrier that you usually get from pet stores.

“What did you bring me, a pet? I’m not that lonely.” Leo smiles and wraps his arm around Logan after the kids let go of him. The little box started squeaking very quietly, catching the attention of everyone. Leo sees the excited stares he's getting from all the kids and his boyfriend so he decides to open the box.

“Meet Tortilla, I adopted her from a family owned pet store that had a litter recently. She has been handlers since she was a tiny version of herself so she is okay around kids.” He lifts a small chinchilla out of the box. He could hear Logan teaching the kids how to hold her properly and how to play with her safely as Leo cooked. He was cooking up leftovers that Celeste left.

Once they ate Leo went out to the truck to get the cage out to put it in Logan’s room. Setting up her enclosure Adele held Tortilla and Katie and Marc stood around her giving Tortilla little pets every chance they got. They placed her in the enclosure after it was ready for her and let her run around inside for a bit before she went into her little home. “You should drop the towel ginger boy, show us what we are missing.” Leo speaks up smirking when he sees Finn turn red.

“You have kids awake!”

“Non, they are asleep.” Logan adds in as they watch Finn pick up the phone and start walking towards the bed, tossing them so they only see the ceiling. They start booing and Finn laughs as he picks the phone back up now in a pair of Leo’s boxers with fish on them. They have become his favorites.

“I was changing, chill out.” He still has the towel from his hair around his shoulders, he just looks at them for a bit taking in how soft and sweet they look curled up together. “You guys are so fucking cute.” He shares a look with Logan and he knows what’s gonna happen. Leo starts talking about the day as Logan leans up to whisper something in his ear. Finn watched as Leo’s face changed from an innocent smile to a dark blush and a slightly shocked face.

“Bedroom?” Leo nods as Logan winks at the phone and drags the taller man to the bedroom, looking around for a second he grabs a chair and pulls it close to the bed while Leo turns on the light. Finn is excitedly watching his screen as Logan tackles Leo onto the bed.

“Tell me what’s the plannn!” Finn whines over the phone and Logan just looks at him from where he is between Leo’s legs and smirks before diving in for a spicy kiss. Logan shoved his tongue in Leo’s mouth taking control of the kids like he hasn’t ever before. Leo is pliant under him and yanks on his shirt as they make out.

Logan leans back and tugs his shirt over his head trying to toss it over the chair but instead throwing it directly at the phone.

“Hey!” Finn shouts from under the shirt, Leo laughs as Logan leans over to pluck the shirt off him. He blows a kiss at the camera before a shirt hits him in the head covering his eyes.

“Hey!” Leo and Finn both start laughing as Logan tosses the other shirt away from them and stands up on the bed pulling down his pants and shakily taking them off before he lands on his knees and yanks Leo’s sweats down.

“In a rush Lo?” Leo smiles as Logan starts furiously digging through his side table drawer for what Leo was guessing was lube. Tossing random papers and a small book on the floor in the process.

So for the past 7 years all that money they collected over $1 billion probably none of that has touched the black community

Hoo boy so while I agree with the gist of this ask, there’s some misleading info here:

ActBlue is not giving BLM donations to the DNC, and this claim has been debunked multiple times by reliable sources. However, the BLM Global Network Foundation has faced questioning and controversy this year thanks to their nonprofit partnerships and a lack of transparency. I always advocate for donating as small-scale and locally as you can. I’ll put the rest of this analysis (with sources linked) under a read more, since it’s LONG (but it took me forever to put together so pls read thx ❤️).

ActBlue is an online fundraising platform that is not explicitly related to the US Democratic Party, but which only funds left-leaning and progressive candidates and organizations. It’s a tech company. It earns money by functioning as this service, so yes, your donations help fund it. Organizations and candidates pay ActBlue a 3.95% processing fee for donations, but the rest of the money donated does go to the organization or specific candidate. ActBlue is also registered as a PAC (political action committee) which is a whole can of Political Worms I don’t want to open, but that means it has to report to the Federal Election Commission/the IRS which is a positive because it results in transparency of conduit funding.

So...96.05% of the money you donate through the BLM website SHOULD go to the BLM Foundation. It does NOT go to the DNC. The person who started this rumor (from a since-deleted Facebook post which led to a viral video) is a member of a Students for Trump organization, and other conservative pundits picked up on it and posted it. It just isn’t true, and has been debunked many times.

HOWEVER there’s still a problem. It’s hard to say where the money donated to the BLM site actually goes, and that issue is directly related to tax laws and nonprofit organization status in the US. There were questions and lawsuits about this earlier this year. There is an interesting loophole in ActBlue’s policy that states that “contributions...which are not cashed or affirmatively refused will be kept by ActBlue and used generally to support its social welfare activities”. In other words, ActBlue will keep money that is not cashed by the organizations within 60 days and use it to “generally support its social welfare activities”. No, I don’t know exactly what that means--it’s probably used by ActBlue for program costs, or is reallocated to its general fund (which gives grants to nominee funds, the Flip the Senate campaign, etc) but it does mean that money doesn’t go to those organizations, even if it was donated to them, if the organizations don’t claim it. Then, in a Reddit AMA in June, a BLM Foundation organizer provided less than satisfying information about where the money they fundraise goes. It’s difficult to find that info online thanks to the way nonprofits function within American tax law.

It’s important to note here that the BLM Foundation and BLM Global Network are not necessarily associated with individual community activist organizations, protests, or the general BLM social movement. There’s plenty of discourse on this you can research on your own if you want. Google is free.

What’s important here is that the BLM Foundation operates as a nonprofit with a “parent” charity. From 2016 to this year BLM worked with Thousand Currents, which “fundraises grassroots groups led by women, youth and Indigenous Peoples”. In July they switched to a “working relationship” with TIDES, which is a “philanthropic partner and nonprofit accelerator dedicated to building a world of shared prosperity and social justice”.

I’m not going to get into my personal feelings about large scale nonprofit organizations and the oxymoron of conscious capitalism (because organizations like this are essentially venture capitalists for nonprofits imo), but personally I think the larger and more decentralized the organization (or parent organization, in this case), the less effective your donation. More on that later.

Essentially though, Thousand Currents and TIDES are organizations that focus on fundraising and infrastructure and then fund smaller grassroots groups that might not have the infrastructure or foothold to do that for themselves. This is not uncommon in the nonprofit world. I work for a nonprofit that ran though a university foundation and an established local nonprofit for ten years before we got our 501(c)(3) designation and started functioning independently. It’s not abnormal that the BLM Foundation works with an organization like that, given BLM is pretty decentralized by design and is also a fairly new organization (2013/2014).

Thousand Currents and TIDES have 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. It can be difficult for smaller and newer nonprofits (as well as nonprofits that function outside of the US but which rely on donations from the US or other countries outside of where they’re headquartered) to gain that status, so they often work under a larger organization. 501(c)(3) status means financial records have to be made public, which means anyone can access the financial records for Thousand Currents and TIDES. You can also find tax filings for the BLM Foundation, but it’s less comprehensive (the most recent I could find was Form 990 from 2017, but maybe I’m not looking in the right place). Anyone can request tax documents from 501(c)(3) nonprofits.

This is getting complicated, right? Welcome to American tax law and nonprofit organizational hierarchies functioning under late stage capitalism. i’m not trying to throw the BLM Foundation under the bus here, because honestly this is just how it goes with a lot of organizations in the US. I don’t think it means you shouldn’t support them. But it gets pretty twisted up. Maybe you made a $20 donation to BLM back in July and now you’re wondering where the hell it went. Here’s the pipeline: your donation goes through ActBlue (which takes 3.95%, or .79 cents of your donation) to TIDES, which then directs that money to BLM. They know how much money is coming to them for BLM because ActBlue differentiates fundraising campaigns--the BLM money going to Thousand Currents or TIDES is separated from the funds coming to them for, say, CLIMA or the Farm to School Network . However, Thousand Currents and TIDES probably take a cut to support their operating costs, too. I couldn’t find data on this, so this is conjecture and I’m not sure how much--this statement is just based on knowing how nonprofits and fundraising usually work.

So, the money stream from you to BLM is like this: You------> ActBlue (takes a 3.95% cut) ------> Thousand Currents or TIDES (probably takes a cut, then directs the money to)------> BLM -----> Whatever BLM uses it for. Despite that strange loophole in ActBlue’s policy, Thousand Currents appeared to be claiming the donations and directing them to BLM (as of 2018...will be interesting to see tax stats from this year since their move to TIDES after unprecedented donations).

BLM does have a huge grassroots organizing fund that began this June in response to overwhelming donations following the murder of George Floyd. The fund provides grants up to $500,000 to smaller grassroots organizations and activists, as well as educational curriculum and political platforms. Their grant campaign is supported by TIDES, which provides the infrastructure and tax-exempt funding conduit needed for such a large scale effort. I’m guessing most of the money they’re fundraising goes to that fund. A chunk definitely goes to paying employees, running their website, and funding outreach and education.

So ALL THAT BEING SAID, I would always say donate directly to bail funds, mutual aid funds, legal fee funds, and local activism organizations before donating to a larger, all-encompassing charity or organization. If you can Venmo someone you know and you know where that money goes, that’s always the best.

Venmo accounts, gofundme campaigns, cashapp accounts, paypal accounts...that’s often what smaller scale organizations and activists are using on a local level and it’s generally collected and distributed more directly. The BIPOC and COVID mutual aid funds where I live are active on Facebook and Instagram and operate based on requests for help from community members that are posted on Google documents available to the public. Here is a good example of a grassroots COVID mutual aid fund that is directing A LOT of money locally and transparently--there are similar funds and organizations like this worldwide for COVID, BLM, and beyond.

The biggest impact you can make always comes at the community level--you should do some research into figuring out what’s going on in your area. There’s almost always something nearby, even if you live in a rural area or smaller town like I do, and if there’s not, hey--you could start something! Engage in your community and put your money into that, or into other communities in need. Pay attention to stuff going around on Twitter and Instagram--a lot of community organizing is facilitated there.

I included the BLM link in the original post because the website is a good place to learn about actions around the globe, organizing basics, and has a lot of up to date news and educational materials. I advocated for donating to bail funds, mutual aid funds, water projects, and local activist organizations and I stand by that. I’m not saying you shouldn’t donate to the BLM Global Network or other larger-scale foundations, but the conduit of money to cause is usually not as direct. I still don’t think it’s a bad thing to donate to them.

Do you get on Facebook every day? Yeah pretty much all throughout the day. I used to never use it, like never ever; but back in college all announcements were coursed through Facebook so I was technically required to be on it regularly, and it was from there that I began to see memes and start to be more active. I’m a shitposter more than anything though and I rarely ever post stuff of my own. How many FB friends do you have? I have 679 at the moment but I want to get rid of like 500 of them; it’s just such a long list to go through so I never get to proceed with my unfriending spree lol.

Have you ever been on a deleting spree? HAHA I just mentioned that. I’ve always wanted to, but like I said 679 is already such an exhaustive list for me, and that’s considering I only started touching my Facebook in like 2019. I can’t imagine people who started Facebook in like 2009 and have 4000 friends aka most people I know.

Have you blocked a lot of haters? I don’t have haters; at least I’m not aware of any that I have. Not that it’s something I care about at this point.

Do you get bullied online a lot? No, but that’s also because I don’t really open the channels for people to send in hate. I don’t have Q&A handles like Curious Cat and I never pick out that option in Instagram where people can send in questions.

What's your favorite Facebook app? Oh I never use Facebook for their apps. Are those still even a thing...? Anyway, I mainly go there to be on the hunt for stupid memes I can reshare or to watch videos that are either funny or informative.

Are you a fan of selfies? I don’t mind if other people do it, but I think I’m honestly bad at selfies so I almost never take them. I’ve never figured out my angles or what filters look ok on me.

Has anyone ever called the police on you because they didn't like your status? No but I have had my posts reported because they were deemed ‘offensive.’ Which is weird because my posts that have been taken down are those that speak out against disgusting men, which says a lot about Facebook runs their shit more than anything else.

Are you in any facebook groups? I’m in nearly a hundred groups, both private i.e. for school purposes, and public.

Are you the admin of any groups? Nah. Too much time and effort needed out of me.

Do you report abuse to group admins whenever you see it? Yes. I report the post then leave the group.

What could make Facebook better? They could put more effort into detecting and banning troll farms.

What year did you start using Facebook? I made an account in 2012 because of a high school class that required us to upload this specific video-format homework onto Facebook (which in hindsight is such an insensitive homework considering that was nearly a decade ago when the Philippines was still severely behind in internet connection speeds?? Ugh). But I didn’t start actively using my account until around two years ago.

What is your current profile picture of? Myself, posing in front of the sunflowers in school during the recent graduation season.

Did you like the old Myspace better than Facebook? I was never a regular user of Myspace, so...

Do you have a YouTube channel? If so, what is it? Technically I do but I only have it so I can tailor video suggestions to my interests and so that I can like videos and subscribe to channels I like.

What kind of things do you post on YouTube? I’ve never posted any video on there, not even private ones. I’m also not the type to comment.

What do you like to watch on YouTube? These days YouTube serves as a stress reliever for me, which is to say I would typically go for humorous BTS-related compilations because there are sooooo many hilarious channels that make these great videos haha. Occasionally I’d go back to channels or series that I used to frequent, like Good Mythical Morning, Buzzfeed’s Worth It and Unsolved, Try Guys, Watcher, etc.

Are you subscribed to any channels? To so many.

Do you watch any vlogs? If so, what ones are your favorite? Hm probably Jiwoo’s, though her channel is called Mejiwoo. I find her content calming and conversational and basically fun to binge-watch when I’m not looking for anything super super particular to watch.

Do you think twitter is stupid? Hehe show me at least one person who doesn’t think so. < Coming from someone who regularly uses Twitter, agree. It is crazy stupid but stupid is what I’m there for. Which is honestly not always such a bad thing to me - I like that people are more themselves, more stripped-down, vulnerable on Twitter. People always seem to want to show off their best selves on Facebook and Instagram, so I’m actually kind of grateful that there is at least one social media out there where people can just be their clumsy, goofy selves.

How often do you tweet? Probably a maximum of five a day. Nowadays I’m on there mostly to just scroll through my timelines.

Do you get on twitter every day? Yes, both on my personal and fan account.

Do you use myspace now? No. Is it still even around? I have no clue.

Hello everyone I’ve been away for a while and now I’m back doing my blog this time I want to talk about the work I do for the incredible Gok Wan I absolutely love doing my work that I do for this guy I don’t get paid for doing it I don’t wanna be paid for doing it I do it in my own time and I absolutely love it it’s taking off really big because when I first started the work I did for this guy I didn’t think it would go anywhere but it’s huge Which I did not expect well just love doing what I do and how much incredible work goes into it and the incredible up to but it’s because of Gok’s followers that this it’s taking off so big I am beyond grateful for what I’ve achieved but without any of you guys helping me along the way there wouldn’t be any accounts that I run for this incredible guy thank you so much for that I really really do appreciate all the love and support you all give me from my accounts that I run I’ve read through all your comments about my group and how much you love the work that goes into it thank you so so much for your wonderful comments it really does go a lot way When I first these accounts like I said earlier I didn’t think it would go this big but wow just love how big it’s got and how big it’s gone and that’s all down to the people who follow it and support me through this I also would like to talk about my beautiful friend Frances who helped me update my accounts when needed I absolutely loved having her help she was such a darling I saw one in 1 million and I wouldn’t have got through some of the stuff without her incredible help and thank you so much beautiful much appreciated hope that you will continue to help me when you feel ready to help me again I would love that if you decide to help me again one day I miss your incredible help every day love you girl. WGST, Quiz #3: Short-Answer

1. Determine what kind of social media site you are creating. Then answer the following questions, explaining your decisions. (Remember the key here is to create an ethical algorithm model).

The social media site I will be creating is a mix between Twitter and Instagram. I will take a few very notable features from both platforms and create a safe space that will focus its basis on body positivity and self-love. This will be an all-inclusive platform for all genders and ages sixteen and older. The platform will have multiple subsections for different aspects such as body positivity for mothers, men, women, (including a very safe space and welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community), weight loss, outfit of the day, and overall an atmosphere that allows individuals to uplift, compliment and help one another through positivity. It will be called Beautiful People. It would be structured in the format of a photo blog.

2. What will you measure? (ex: likes, hashtags, how long someone stays on a page, etc).

I will be measuring through hashtags and the duration spent on a specific subsection. The amount of likes on a post will be left invisible, negative comments will be reviewed, deleted, flagged, and first given a warning followed by a suspended account— stressing the importance of spreading positivity and being kind especially on a platform where people are sharing some of their most vulnerable aspects of themselves. The rest of the comments will remain under the post as long as they are not negative, harassment, spam, threats, or mean. This will create a discussion flow and strengthen the communities online. If an individual spends a lot of time particularly on one subsection or a hashtag, this will most likely appear in their feed first. There will also be a page that has the hashtags that are trending and being used the most that day to bring awareness to an aspect or topic that can be relatable or to learn more about. Users will have to verify their email or phone number to avoid bots as well. This site will be accessible to anyone from ages sixteen and older.

3. How will you weight these factors? (rank factors from most important to least important).

Comments on a post and hashtags would be the primary measurement. This is due to the fact that if a post receives a lot of comments and incites a conversation with a lot of engagement, it is creating a conversation within the community that is either needed, relatable, or overall helpful and educational. Hashtags will allow for organization within the platform and if a specific hashtag is being used by many users at a specific frame of time, it shows an importance to the relevance on a specific subject matter whether it be about stretch marks, postpartum bodies and/or experiences, breast cancer survivor body positivity, etc., this will allow for engagement and overall advice, motivation, tips, and overall learning from one another and ourselves. The least important would be likes and followers as this will not be displayed to the public, only for the original user to see as Beautiful People does not want to create a sense of ‘popularity’ or ‘reward feedback’ type aspect as its not a competition with one another, and the importance of likes and followers should not be stressed on this platform.

4. What factors will not be measured? (what will not be measured in your algorithm and why).

Factors that will not be measured is location or region of a user, religious affiliation, social class, and overall the number of likes on a post because there are many cases that a post receives an overwhelming amount of likes yet is not positive, helpful, informative, or overall welcoming— we see this with celebrities, hate speech, and politicians. The amount of followers will also not be visible to the public to avoid creating that popularity competition and comparison among the users and overall community. We want to avoid having any room for users to compare themselves to others, and focus on supporting and uplifting each other, spreading positive vibes, and growing confident, comfortable within their own bodies, and feeling like they have a safe space to vent, be themselves, seek advice and create positive communities.

5. How will the model learn or adapt to new information? (this can include changes in language, etc).

The model will learn to adapt to new information and conversations by fact-checking new content and providing accurate information resources, and by slowly filtering to a user's likes and engagement on specific posts, topics, subjects and categories. If a person spends a lot of time and likes specific posts with similarities, this will tailor their feed to this. There will be a lot of efforts from the Beautiful People Team in reviewing and monitoring posts, hashtags, and comments to avoid any harassment and hate speech. Users will also be allowed to report posts or comments if they feel uncomfortable, targeted or any form of bullying from it.

6. What biases will be built into the model? How will this change the algorithm’s outcome?

The biases that will exist are the ability that users will have to mute/block and make certain topics or posts invisible for whichever reason they may feel is best for themselves and their own mental health. In order to keep users in full control of their content, they will have the ability to block users and have control of who can and can’t see their content.

7. How will the model live out the (un)ethical practices we have discussed?

The model will live out the (un)ethical practices we have reviewed and discussed by taking that extra step in reviewing the content that is being discussed and shared on a social platform. Content will be reviewed immediately, comments, posts, hashtags, and trends to make sure it stays a positive and overall safe space for people of all sexualities, ages, gender, race, etc., users will have that access and ability to have full control of content/users they may not want to see, and users will not have the lingering anxiety or factor of followers and like count on their posts, made public, to avoid the overall stigma and judgment that comes from that—not only for the user but also for the community as a whole to avoid the aspect and possibility of comparing themselves and their content to others.

those of you following the situation might’ve seen that i asked the blog to dm me

well it seems although you said ok, you have no intention of dming me, so here i am instead

the first point i wanted to address is, are you actually here as emma's fan? i'm sure you'll just address this with a simple "yes", so i'd also like to state that at this point i'm not looking for your answer on that one. at this point i don't think you really are, there's some other motive for this (i would have discussed this but unfortunately, you've turned off dms so we'll have to do it in this format, i hope it's ok)

the second is simply: what are your reasons for doing this? you've said it's because you want to support emma and seventeen, but thus far you haven't been doing either. you say you'll stop if emma tells you to, but she tells you and you ignore her words, so obviously that isn't a true statement; i'd like to hope if you really wanted to support emma you would do the obvious and listen to her feelings about the situation, rather than responding with "i respect your feeling but there is freedom of speech" (for those who don't know, this is a direct quote from when emma dmed her directly and informed her that this was making her uncomfortable)

personally i'm inclined to believe this is a kind of experiment with the intention to make commentary on fic writing as an art, and perhaps fan content in general. certain responses you've made have made me think that it's either that or a push for attention (for example, asking people to come into your inbox and tell you what you were doing wrong, which you would know, if you had truly been seeing the posts telling people to report you; most posts included the reason for reporting your blog in them)

in this case, i can explain what you've done that's wrong to you in a few points:

you took photos off emma's facebook without her permission, including a photo of her posing with a certificate which included her last name and university (while you've deleted it now, which i thank you for, you had it up there and while unfortunately that remains one of the few posts i don't have receipts for, you and i both know it happened and while i don't expect you to act like it, i expect you to remember)

you wrote explicit content about her

you willfully continued this activity even after she told you how it made her feel and asked you to stop

now i'm sure there's a few counterpoints which you could make, including "well it's a public profile" but here's the thing

say i have an instagram account. on this account, i post photos of myself for my friends and family. it's a public account available on the internet, but i haven't linked it on here. i don't want people on tumblr to find that account and follow it. i've never mentioned it in a post. if you were to start posting photos from that on tumblr, where theoretically i have a sizeable following, i may ask you to stop; i don't want people on tumblr to know what i look like. this is an invasion of privacy. regardless of if the posts or pictures were public, they were never meant to be associated with my tumblr.

regardless, she asked you to stop, which should be reason enough for you to quit.

it may be said (and indeed you may have already said this and i just forgot; you'll have to forgive me, i don't have the patience to look through your blog and find it) that you're just writing fan fiction, and emma does the same thing, so it can't be wrong, right? this in part is why i think this could be a publicity effort / social experiment to drive a point that fan fiction and fan content are in many ways invasive and wrong. but you see, that point also is a bit misguided (which i'll cover later). in this case, the person you're writing the fan fiction about asked you outright, point blank, directly, to stop. i would hope that most carat writers would cease activities had seventeen asked outright, point blank, in the way emma has (numerous times), for them to stop. if seventeen at any point said fan content made them uncomfortable, i would immediately stop.

i hope i don't have to address the matter of consent. you say you're 13 so i should hope i don't have to explain it. i will if you need me to.

to finally address the point of all fan content being inherently invasive, there are several things making this situation fundamentally different and at its core making it so this cannot be used for that sort of point

emma is not a public figure in the way idols are

emma did not post those pictures to her facebook for her tumblr followers’ usage (you may be only posting from youtube now, but unfortunately for you, you and i both know you were taking from facebook before; let's not beat around the bush, shall we?)

again, emma has told you point blank that she does not appreciate this content and wants you to please stop

yes those photos were public. they were not public for this usage. again, they were there for her family and friends to see, not her tumblr followers. yes, emma has a public tumblr blog. that does not make her a public figure in the way joshua is. again, she asked you to stop.

i'm starting to repeat myself, so i believe i'll end that there. if you have any questions, please ask them. if i have any further points to make, i'll return and make them.

i apologize for the people who are coming in to yell at and insult you. while i do think your actions were disgusting and inexcusable in many ways and terrified not only emma but several other writers in the community and caused effects that i'm sure you weren't prepared for, i don't believe you should be yelled at or insulted like this.

i hope you understand exactly your effects on the community. i hope you understand what you've done. because i'm experiencing the effects of your actions, and now i feel afraid. you've sown chaos and discord into a peaceful writing community and i honestly can't ever forgive you for that.

I Pinned You From Across the Zoom

When you have them pinned, that’s how you know it’s real. The anonymous owners of @usc.missedconnections on Instagram discussed zoom romance and the seductive mystery of having an admirer behind the screen.

Imagine Gossip Girl, but make it all horny college students deprived of casual touch. That is the drama of @usc.missedconnections. If you don’t avidly stalk their account, you either have an unheard of self-confidence that doesn’t require any external validation, you deleted your Instagram in a fit of quarantine frenzy, or you haven’t heard of them yet, and you’re very curious about the previously stated analogy.

See the bio of the @usc.missedconnections page: “Have a message for the person whose zoom you always pin or saw from 6 ft away? Anonymously send your missed connection below!” Below sits the google form where all the virtual action happens: the flirts, the cat calls, the compliments, and the subtle roasts. It really is a good time, somewhat making up for the lack of classroom banter that would normally occur.

I sat down with the students who began the account, and we chatted about the new sensation that is dominating everyone’s feed.

Tori: My roommates and I have been following your page pretty actively, as I think a lot of people have been recently.

@usc.missedconnections just surpassed 3000 followers in the few months since their origin on September 30th, 2020

T: It’s definitely very entertaining, especially with Zoom making everything a little bit more boring and separated. It’s been really fun to follow @usc.missedconnections and see what’s the tea! To begin, how did you come up with the idea of creating this account?

Connector 1: I was between USC and another school out on the East coast. Some good friends that I went out and visited there showed me the [Instagram] page at that school, and I was like, “Hey that's a cool idea, that looks like a lot of fun.’ I texted _(Connector 2)_. I was like, “Hey here’s some dumb idea, we’ll get 50 people, we’ll get 2 responses a day. It will be kind of fun to just post them,” and we just grew from there.

T: So how many posts do you guys get a day now?

Connector 2: It’s actually ticked up a lot in what, the past like 2 weeks-ish? For a long time we had a solid 100 just in the bank, and then we slowly [opened them], but it's been 200 plus starting just recently, which is weird. We started posting more frequently to catch up.

Connector 1: Yeah I presume we get about 30-ish on average a day.

Are you intrigued yet? About 30 lucky students across the online campus are being called out for some reason another, be it their sexy voice, their mustache, their wall decorations, or the way they eat their oranges. And on the flip side, about 30 people a day are shooting their anonymous shot through the account. With anonymity of course comes a certain audacity to get real freaky over the submission form. I wondered how freaky it could get.

T: Do you post all of the ones that come, or is there some sort of filtering process?

Connector 1: We’ve had a couple instances where people have been mentioned or certain organizations that have been mentioned have requested for us to take the post down, so we’ve always just respected that if we’re ever asked to take the post down for whatever reason.

Connector 2: I periodically will go through, and I’ll be like, “This one’s weird, I don't think we need to post that,” and then I'll delete it.

_(connector 1)_ idk if you know that I do that, but um…

Connector 1: Oh probably. I mean, I’ve deleted one before.

Connector 2: Yeah, when I’m doing them sometimes I’ll be like ‘this is a little weird how can we phrase this in a way that's not exactly… yeah.

T: Yeah, what’s like the line? Because I think a lot of the time some of the things can be kind of… creepy… I mean the whole thing is like…

Connector 1: (cuts in, chuckling) Kinda creepy

T: (agreeing) Kinda creepy, right!

There have been submissions such as:

“To ____, Did you know if you rearrange the letters of Coronavirus you get “carnivorous”? Which makes sense because I want to spend the next 14 days of quarantine eating you”

and

“____ in BUAD 497, my only motivation for coming to class is being able to pin your video and look at your beautiful face for two hours”

Connector 1: It’s interesting, um, when we first started it, we talked, and the thing we were worried most about was like cyber bullying, and I personally haven't seen many posts. You get the offhand sarcastic comments, um, which are pretty funny sometimes, but I don’t know if we... we don't really have a set filter. If we feel like something’s over the bar, then we’ll kinda edit it out. Of course a lot of the time too if we’re iffy on something we’ll text the other person and be like ‘hey what do you think of this’ so, it's no distinct line, but our goal is never to make anyone uncomfortable.

T: Yeah, I think generally it's been pretty positive, a lot of affirming things. Even sometimes not romantic, like just positive comments which is pretty cool, and it's good to see that that's been going on.

Aw so sweet, fellow Trojans getting along so well. But this is a juicy topic. Playing the role as the reporter, I had to get the inside scoop.

T: Do you ever get messages about yourself?

Connector 1: I’ve had 2

Connecter 2: Yeah he’s had 2, I haven’t had any and I’m mad about it. I want one

Connector 1: I gave you one

Connector 2: You gave me one but I knew it was from you so it didn’t mean anything.

T: So you’re not only the owners of the account. You’re sort of participating in the game as well.

Connector 1: Oh, it’s always a blast when like you’re reading through and you know the person who it's getting written about and you’re just waiting. Yeah, that’s like my favorite part of it, and also the guessing games sometimes are a lot of fun too.

Connector 2: For a long time people were scared to tag people that it was about in the comments, but now there’s no hesitation. People will just tag everyone, which I think is really fun.

Its also fun that we don’t give the full last name because then its kinda funny when you get a really generic “Sam B” or “Lucy J” and 6 different Lucy’s get tagged and half the time we know who it really is because we saw the last name and then edited it out.

T: Why don’t you include the full name?

Connector 2: I think it’s more fun. (shyly shrugs) It’s about keeping the mystery, you know? Who could it possibly be about?

Connector 1: We do get a lot of requests though because of that, where people are like, “Hey, is this me? Can you tell me who sent this in?” and we're like “I don't know.”

Connector 2: Yeah people DM us every day asking for things, and also sometimes people don't understand that we have a forum in our bio and they send it in thru DM, their missed connections, which sort of ruins the anonymity and its sort of embarrassing for them bc we have to be like, “please submit it in our bio,” and they have to be like “oh god now they know”

T: It’s almost like a masquerade.

Again, I am imagining Jenny Humphrey wearing her golden mask at the Constance Billard School for Girls Masquerade Ball, prancing around Nate Archibald without him having the faintest idea of who he will be kissing. Maybe this is a little different, but the spirit is there!

T: Looking through your posts of course, a lot of them are, “Oh, I have your screen pinned, I watch you all the time in class” Do you guys do that? Do you think that that's like, Zoom behavior now, or is that still cringe?

Connector 2: Idk if I’d pin for a whole class, but I’ve been known to take a look, and based on all the things we’ve gotten sent it I guess people do. If you’re in a lecture thats boring, fair enough. I can't fault you for that. It’s so weird right now, so who knows?

Connector 1: I think it's really fun also, like, people get really creative too. A lot of them are really general but we just posted one today that had a Kanye reference. We get poetry sometimes. I love the poets. It’s a lot of fun for us and I think other people get to read the more fun posts then, like “hey I saw you”, when saying “hey I saw you” does make it, I guess, easier to match, but it’s less exciting for everybody else

T: To match... going off of that, have you heard of any success stores?

Connector 2: I have not but I desperately want to know. I think if people get married we legally have to officiate the wedding. We’ll go public to officiate the wedding. We’ll break anonymity for that.

T: Do a little daft punk moment

Connector 1: Yeah exactly. The [ones] behind the mask.

T: Do you think you want to continue it next year or post COVID in general?

Connector 1: Yeah, I mean I want to.

They talked about potential future: color schemes, contemplating a purple theme or the classic USC colors. I can tell that the account is only growing from here. It’s not like there is any shortage of desperate college students!

T: That’s exciting. I’m excited to see where the account goes!

Connector 1: Us too

T: I’m also looking forward to hopefully getting a post about myself. I have not yet. I know you guys are hiding it

Connector 1: Oh yeah, well with the 200 post back log I’m sure it’ll come out soon...
