#How DARE she have a home she built without a man and then invite a man

As someone who grew up in a christian household with very christian and very republican relatives, it is very funny to me for someone to tell me that Dean and Lisa sleeping and living together outside of wedlock, being dual breadwinners, and parenting a child together born out of wedlock who isn’t even Dean's biologically, is about christian and republican values.
Simultaneously, when I am told in very thinly veiled terms that Dean and Lisa are damaged goods whose value as long-term romantic partners was ruined by their existing sexual/romantic histories, I am apparently not supposed to see christian/republican values in that take or think about the sexual purity lectures I got as a child at church comparing me to like a pearl or a rose or some shit getting dirtied by premarital sex until no one could want me anymore.
#the house is also Lisa's the neighborhood is Lisa's Dean cooks the breakfast like SHE took HIM in she's the primary breadwinner#i know people who would be sooo weird about this. They'd be like Scandal! She dares to have something not provided by a MAN????#How DARE she have a home she built without a man and then invite a man#she is not married to into it!!! Having filthy evil sex outside of marriage!#i mean if you see this I already told you personally how I feel privately but like feel free to lmk what nuance I am missing to this lol#spicy spicy ghost pepper extract#2nd part is actually so bad that even many christian groups themselves have depopularized it and shame the past groups for those lectures

OH MY GOD OKAY- so hang on- first off, BELLA, how are you? how's the newborn? how are the kids in general?! i'm happy to hear the birth went well, i hope you're recovering well and that you're not pushing yourself too muchhhhh
ANYWAY. i just found out how my godfather/uncle met his wife and- HOLY SHIT it gives me SUCH Frank or Matt vibes (more frank than matt in my opinion, but 100% either of them) and i had to tell you about it to see if you agreeeeeee (+ it could be a cool oneshot idea if you want it hehe, i'll give it for free)
OKAY SO for the purposes of clarity, my uncle/godfather's name is now Peter, and his wife's name is Molly, because why not?
Peter is invited to his best friend's wedding, and the bride at that wedding warns him "hey, don't you dare talk to Molly" (while pointing Molly out in a crowd) "she just went through a really difficult breakup and though you guys are 100% eachother's types, she is absolutely not ready for another relationship and i don't want you to break her heart if the relationship isn't going to last."
and Peter respects that. except the bride wasn't clear about who she was pointing to. so Peter was avoiding another random girl in the friend group he'd never met and had been talking and flirting all night with Molly without realising it was Molly and he legit spent the whole ceremony and most of the reception sitting right next to her and chatting.
and then during the reception, the bride realises that Peter and Molly are talking and she tells Peter like- "why are you talking to Molly, I told you to stay away from her!" and he's like "that's Molly? well you were right then" and then the bride is like "about what?" and he's like "that we're eachother's types. I gave her my phone number an hour into us meeting and I've already asked her out on a date and she said yes."
and now they've been married for 10 years or so and have two daughters
LIKE IT'S ALL SO CUTE- when i found out i wanted to die because of how adorable it is- like it's genuinely the meet-cute in a rom-com kind of shit- and to me it's SO Frank or Matt-coded (helps that my godfather/uncle is military and is built nearly exactly like Frank- like seriously shave frank's head, make him look slightly less worn out and traumatised and you have my godfather/uncle + they have the exact same sense of humour and stuff).
Hey, friend!! 💖 My response is a bit long so I put it below the cut. But enjoy this Frank gif to break things up (and because I wouldn't be able to resist that man looking at me like that at a wedding...).
I am doing well! I've had a cold shortly after coming home from the hospital which has been rough on top of everything else, but I feel a little better today and I have been taking time to try to take care of myself. Our little baby is doing well, boy can down milk like no one's business and he's generally a pretty happy little guy all the time. My toddler absolutely adores him already, but he's been an only child for almost 4 years so he's been having a hard time sharing our attention. The birth had some scary ups and downs last week, but things ended up okay and both baby and I are alright! I will say that I've had enough experience with child birth and don't want to do it a third time after that, though 😅
Ahhh!! OMG! I love stories like this! I used to be a wedding photographer for about 11 years before becoming a stay at home mom and I LOVE hearing stories of how couples met (or got engaged) because it's so interesting to hear about! And I can actually see a story for either Matt or Frank so I may keep that in mind for a one shot now, thank you 😆
But yes! I could absolutely see an innocent Frank at a wedding getting the women mixed up and genuinely talking to the "wrong" one and they end up hitting it off in the end and he sticks by her side for most of the night. Sweet Frank would soothe anyone's broken heart. As for Matt, well, I could see him making an innocent mistake, but truly I could see Fog warning him to stay away from a family member or friend and Matt "accidentally" talking to her and pretending he thought it was another woman Fog warned him to stay away from. I mean, it's Matt and he's a little shit sometimes 🤣
But that's so crazy!! Thank you for sharing this story with me!! I always love taking real life moments and then thinking about how the guys might react if it had happened to them! But I do agree that this screams more Frank than Matt (unless it was about intentionally ignoring the friend's warning because that screams Matt).
#bella answers#that was a sweet story!#and i could definitely see matt and frank doing this in their own way 🤣

Teen/young adult! Reader x Dad! Tyler durden?? I'm not asking pedo Tyler, just Tyler that have a son that invite reader to their house for school homework (for college) and she get a crush on Tyler😭😭 like she tries to flirt without flirting, just dressing more revealing and staring at him with puppy eyes when get invited over
(obviously for not making Tyler a pedophile he would just not flirt back and make fun of her/chuckle, and anyways thanks if you do it💞
I LOVE YOU FOR REQUESTING THIS ANON THANK YOU!!!!
Puppy Eyes (fem young adult! reader x dad! tyler durden) disclaimer: reader is 19, but because Tyler has a son that is the same age, he would feel weird reciprocating reader's feelings.
Steven Durden is Tyler Durden's only son- that he knows of- and you happen to be friends with him. You both went to the same college, so he'd often invite you over to study. Eventually, you and Steven were best friends.
Although, studying wasn't the only thing you went there for. Steven's dad was handsome, built, and downright the most attractive man you've ever seen. You'd shyly greet him when you walked in, and then quickly find Steven so that you didn't accidentally embarrass yourself.
Today, Steven had called you and asked if you could come over to study. Of course you said yes, since you were sure that you were going to fail the exam if you didn't study- but you also wanted to see Mr. Durden.
You knocked on the door and waited for Steven to open it. To your surprise, Mr. Durden open it instead.
"Hey there, (y/n). Come in," he said with a warm smile.
Your face flushed instantly, and you managed to croak out a weak "hi" in response. There was no sight of Steven, which was both good and bad news for you. After heading inside, you checked to see if he was at the dining table or the living room . . . but he wasn't.
Mr. Durden placed his large hand gently on your shoulder and you turned around frantically.
He chuckled, "Steven will be home soon. I asked him to get some stuff from the store."
"Oh, alright. Thank you for letting me know, Mr. Durden," you replied, straightening your back and fixing the little whisps of hair that were sticking up.
"No need to be so formal, kiddo. Just call me 'Tyler.'"
You nodded, not daring to make eye contact with him. There was no way you had a crush on him, right?
Thankfully, Steven came back just in time before you could answer that question in your head.
"Hey, (y/n)!" he exclaimed while giving you a hug.
"Steven!!"
You heard his dad walk away, meaning you were in the clear- for now. So, you two got to studying and snacking and getting sidetracked. Steven was the best gossiper you knew, so he always had the juiciest details about college couples, drama, and parties. How could you not listen to that?
When it was time to go home, you gave Steven a hug goodbye, and you waved to Mr. Durden on the way out.
"Goodnight, Mr. Durden," you called out.
"It's 'Tyler!' And, hey, stay for dinner next time, 'kay?"
You smiled, but quickly covered your mouth before Tyler, or Steven (ESPECIALLY Steven) could see.
A week or so later, Steven had invited you to the house once again. You decided that you should be a little bolder this time. You wore a dark red dress that covered most of your thighs and hugged your figure nicely. Way too formal for a study session, but you could come up with an excuse. Steven will definitely ask what's up. It exposed your collar bones and neck, and you were starting to wonder if this was a good idea after all.
Oh well!
You still managed to knock on their door and patiently wait for someone to open it. Again, Tyler answered.
He didn't react to your sudden change in style for a study session. Maybe he assumed you dressed that way for Steven?
"Got a date tonight, sweetheart?"
His voice snapped you out of your thoughts and you looked up at him. Without realizing, you were giving him massive puppy eyes. So, yeah, maybe you did have a crush on him.
His expression softened upon seeing your face. He was figuring out that you had a thing for him.
"No," you looked away. "I don't have a date."
Tyler leaned against the doorframe and smirked.
"Well, you sure do look pretty. I hope it's not for Steven. A rascal like him don't deserve it," Tyler joked.
You laughed at his comment about Steven.
Wait . . . he thinks you look pretty?
Steven's loud footsteps came thundering down the staircase.
"(y/n), you made it! We have a lot to cov- woah," he stood there astonished, a light blush creeping up his neck.
You looked around the room in embarrassment. Surely, Steven wouldn't take this the wrong way.
"Wow," he breathed out.
"She's a lovely young lady, ain't she?" Tyler asked Steven, clearly wanting to fluster him more. Little did he know that he was also causing butterflies on your end.
Steven sheepishly nodded, and motioned for you to join him in the living room to study.
"Whatever, dad," he muttered.
You stuck around for dinner and helped Tyler in the kitchen.
"What do you feel like eating, kiddo?" he asked.
You flirted, "I'm sure anything you make will taste great. You're great at everything, after all."
Tyler smiled at you, "I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I can't cook. I can order takeout though."
Your eyes widened as you squeaked out an apology.
"No need to worry your pretty little head about apologies, sweetheart," he teased as he ruffled your hair.
At this point, there was no way he didn't know about your feelings for him.
Steven started notice something odd about you as well. He saw the way that you looked at his dad, how you moved closer to him when he talked, and the pining in your eyes for him. It was kind of gross, because that's his dad, but also not surprising.
You and Steven were hanging out on the porch, talking about life, the latest gossip, and whatever else.
"You like my dad, don't you?" Steven asked.
You nearly threw yourself over the railing.
"WHAT? No, no, no. No, I don't," you blurted out.
Steven laughed and shook his head, "Oh yeah, you sure do."
Putting your face in your hands, you sighed knowing that you got caught. Steven rubbed your back in comfort.
"Hey, it's alright. I was only teasing. But seriously, my dad?"
"I think he's handsome," you whispered.
"You're such a mess. What am I gonna do with you, huh?"
You faced Steven and grabbed him by the shoulders, "Just don't tell him, okay! Please?"
He took your face in his hands and cooed, "Oh you poor thing, I'm sure he already knows."
You looked at him with a sad expression. There wasn't any chance of you getting with Tyler for many reasons:
you were the same age as his son
you were too young for him
it's your best friend's DAD!
Steven simply pulled you into a warm hug and told you it was going to be okay.
Steven invited you over a couple weeks later, but your crush on Tyler was still raging within your heart. You knew it wasn't logical, but you could barely suppress your feelings for him.
When you walked up the steps, you noticed that Tyler was smoking a cigarette. He noticed you and waved, motioning for you to sit beside him before going inside.
You sat down and inspected the wooden floor boards of the porch. You weren't sure what to say.
"Look at me, (y/n)," Tyler said.
You looked at Tyler and there it was again- those puppy eyes. Tyler saw how you looked at him with such adoration. But a sweet girl like you shouldn't crush on a single father like him.
Besides, you were his son's age. He couldn't possibly stomach liking in the way you liked him- it would feel weird and almost wrong.
"You have a thing for me, huh?" he chuckled.
You turned away from him and muttered, "Maybe . . . "
He stroked your hair and hummed in response.
"No need to be embarrassed, sweetheart."
You glanced at him, "Well, Mr. Dur- I mean, Tyler. I do really like you, but I know that it would be weird for you to like me too. I just feel so stupid about this whole thing."
Your eyes welled up in frustrated tears, and you attempted to quickly blink them away, but it only made them worsen.
Tyler took your hand and held it gently, squeezing to let you know that he's here.
"You're not stupid. Sweetheart, I'm flattered, really. It's so adorable when you dress up in pretty little outfits- don't think that I haven't noticed. And your attempts at even the slightest physical touch from me are endearing. You're a darling, beautiful, young lady. It's just that I'm old enough to be your father."
"I know," you sobbed.
Never have you felt more humiliated about a crush.
Tyler kissed your forehead, "It's okay, sweetheart. You can't control who you like sometimes. It just happened to be me this time. But one day you'll like someone else who's your age. And if they hurt you, let me know right away, hm? I'll take care of them for you, and I'll always take care of you."
"Thank you, Tyler. I don't think my crush on you will go away soon, though," you sniffled.
"Oh of course it won't, silly," he chuckled. "You can't get over me that fast."
You giggled and hugged him tightly.
"Thanks, for everything."
Tyler grinned and opened the door to the house for you. There stood Steven, eavesdropping with tears in his eyes.
Steven rushed out to hug you, "MY BABY, MY POOR GIRL! IT'S OKAY, DON'T CRY OVER MY YUCKY FATHER!!! I'LL FIND YOU A NICE GUY SOON!"
All three of you burst into laughter.
Days and weeks passed by, and you still liked Tyler, but it was getting easier for you to ignore those feelings. You still went to their house to study, eat, and hangout. You wore your pretty outfits, and Tyler would grin upon seeing you.
Sometimes he would catch you staring, and he would wink just to tease you.
But even though he didn't reciprocate your feelings for him, the world didn't end. Everything was okay<3

Hi! Can I request a Zhongli (back to when he was still Rex Lapis) x fem!Hydro Archon reader? Thanks in advance, can't wait to see what you come up with!
HYDRO ARCHON READER
★ Includes: Zhongli, female reader
★ Word Count: 1745
★ Master List
★ Notes: thank you for the request! I'm loving the archon readers lately, it's been fun learning about some lore :D Also exams who? Zhongli is too tempting and I may have gone a little overboard...
★ Edit: part two is here >:)
ZHONGLI
★ The archon war was just under a century ago and the water could still remember it. That’s what you loved about the water, it could remember anything it pleased and for as long as it desired, as it was almost as eternal as you were, being the hydro archon and all.
★ You were most renowned for your Oceanid spies that could submerge themselves into the water and listen in to anyone’s conversations. Whether it be a small puddle or an entire lake, they could do it.
★ You had sent one of your finest spies, Rhodeia, to the nation of Liyue being built from the ground up by the god of war. It was a place supposedly filled with prosperous trades and a currency called mora, which you wanted to find more about.
The waterfalls in your throne room gushed and spluttered as Rhodeia emerged from one of them, making her way over to you and kneeling before you. “My queen,” she began, “I’m sorry I have failed you.”
“Failed me?” You chuckled a little nervously. “You have done no such thing. Now, what do you have to report to me from Liyue?”
Something was wrong, you could feel it. The water outside of the room felt strange. It weaved through the air back to you, holding whispers of an intruder located nearby. It urged you to eliminate the possible threat and keep your people safe.
“I-” It pained your spy to utter her next words. “I got caught by the geo archon. He’s waiting outside to speak with you.” Tears formed in the Oceanid’s eyes. She’d failed you, her one job to serve as a spy and go unnoticed was gone.
“Hey!” You got off of your throne and knelt before your spy, wiping the tears from her already water-like body. “There’s no need for tears, you did as I asked and I am thankful to you for that. Everyone makes mistakes every once in a while. I will not punish you for it.”
“Thank, your highness.” She lowered her head and sank into the floor, becoming one with a puddle that sat below her.
Sighing, you got back onto your throne and called out to your guards, “bring him in!”
Rex Lapis was a sight to behold indeed. He wore a long white cloak with the hood up, adorned with several symbols in bronze that represented geo and war. Underneath, he wore a skin-tight black shirt that also acted as gloves, covering his fingers and the majority of his neck. Golden glowing veins trailed up his arms, a similar hue to his amber eyes which glowed almost as fiercely.
“Y/N, the goddess of justice, how very nice it is to meet your acquaintance.” He did not dare kneel, for he was in his own right just as powerful as you were.
“As is it to also meet you, Rex Lapis. What brings you here today without any notice of your arrival?”
“Well, you see, I found an Oceanid in the reflection of one of the ponds around Liyue Harbour and so I returned her to you. What I came here to ask was what information you needed.” He crossed his arms. His swaying motion gave you a chance to see his hair in a rat-tail flowing out of a hole in the back of his cloak.
“And you want to give this information to me willingly?” You raised a brow, tapping your fingers against your throne. Rhodeia was still in the room listening in, you could feel her in the water beside you. You could only hope that he didn’t want your best spy publicly punished in exchange.
“With a trade perhaps, if you’re willing. I shall give you the information you desire in exchange for a favour to Liyue if my nation should ever need help. Is that a deal?”
You paused for a moment to think the trade through. It seemed genuine enough, but it was strange how he didn’t want anything to do with Rhodeia. Maybe it was just his way of ruling, but you were thankful nonetheless. “Alright, we have a deal.”
Stepping down from your throne, you held out your hand for him to shake to confirm the exchange, which he accepted. The closer you got to him, the more you realised how good he looked from up close, making butterflies appear in your stomach.
“What would you like to know about Liyue?” A smile formed on his lips, forcing your cheeks to heat ever so slightly.
★ You asked how such a basic, lowly nation had suddenly become so successful and prosperous. Rex Lapis returned with the answer of everyone pitched in to make Liyue the way it currently is. It hasn’t just been him, the archon, putting in all the work.
★ When you had nothing left you could think of to ask, he left, warning you to not send any more spies his way and to just contact him instead to see him and ask him more information. But why would you do it when that way he could easily keep secrets from you?
★ After a few weeks of waiting, you sent a different spy into the grounds of Liyue with the intention of finding out more about this thing they called mora. Soon enough, they returned.
“Mora are small circles of gold that the citizens carry around with them to use in trades. This is so they don’t have to use personal belongings anymore and they can get food easily.” The Oceanid knelt deeply before you.
“And you didn’t get caught, correct?”
“Correct, my queen.”
Then who was standing outside, one foot in a puddle, waiting with your guards? Using your vision, you called a stream of water back to you to give you more information. From the whispers of knowledge you received, you concluded that Rex Lapis was the one visiting you once again.
“So, you know nothing of the man standing outside?”
Your spy looked up, confused. “No, my queen. I haven’t got any information on that.”
Humming in suspicion, you leant back on your throne. “We shall talk later, for now, have the guards bring in Rex Lapis.”
“Yes, my queen.”
The geo archon crossed his arms, more annoyed than the last time you two saw each other. “If you’d like to see me so much, perhaps we should make a proper contract to exchange information on a regular basis?”
“Perhaps,” you agreed. “You can start with this: how do you keep finding my spies?”
“It’s simple.” Rex Lapis began to pace back and forth as he spoke. “I made a contract with them.”
Your eyes widened in shock. Your spies had betrayed you? No, not all of them surely. Rhodeia would never dare. She was loyal. They were all loyal, weren’t they?
“When they get to Liyue, they seek me and tell me of your plans. In return, I will give you the information you require and they may leave my nation intact.”
How dare he. All you had wanted was information and the slight chance of seeing him again. You had to admit, your thoughts had lingered on him throughout your time apart, now you could do nothing but chide yourself. This was how you were rewarded.
“And for mora, why are you so concerned over my currency?” You watched as he outstretched his arm, a small coin-like shape appearing in his skin before dropping. He caught the circle that he no doubt recognised as mora.
“It’s not much of a concern, merely curiosity.”
After a moment of silence, the god of war spoke again, “if you’d like, I could integrate it into Fontaine. I’ve been dreaming of this invention to spread across Teyvat to make trades and contracts much easier.”
You were in no place to deny as he already had a firm grasp on your spies, but did you even want to deny him? How better to learn about this currency than to bring it into your home?
★ The two of you discussed back and forth what bringing mora into Fontaine would require, leaving you unknowing that you were indeed the first step for mora becoming a worldwide currency.
★ Years went by of Rex Lapis coming back and forth every month or so to replenish your stocks of mora. You loved to watch as he did so, the coins appearing in his body and then falling to his feet, letting you notice how exhausted it made him.
★ Always afterwards you invited him to dine with you to help replenish his strength and also exchange information about your nations. As the two of you grew closer, you began to realise that you were falling for him.
It was getting too much, your admiration for him, your desire to see and touch him. You needed it all and it was getting unbearable without his presence, but you had no idea if Rex Lapis felt the same way about you.
Your Morax. It was a little nickname you had given him from watching him produce all those coins, a mixture between Rex and mora. You began to imagine what he would look like if you ever called him that, so entranced with this thought that you didn’t hear him calling you name.
“Y/N?” He called a little louder, reaching out for your hand that had been swirling your tea in its cup. The geo archon had brought some along with him from Liyue for you to try. According to him, it was his favourite
You jumped at the contact, suddenly looking up into his amber eyes. “Oh sorry, yes?”
He chuckled at your flustered appearance, taking another sip of his tea. “It seems that another contract is in order.”
“Another? What for this time?” Had you done something wrong? If you had, surely he would voice his concerns.
“Would you be inclined to forge a contract together to be each other’s partner? I’ve heard it’s quite the custom among mortals.” He turned away, nervousness running through his body.
Your heart felt as though it dropped from its safety in your chest. Did you hear him correctly? Were you zoned out again and just hearing what you wished to hear?
You shot up from your seat and wrapped your arms around his chest, burying your face into the crook of his neck.
The vibrations of his deep laugh reverberated through you as he replied, “I shall take that as a yes.”

hii! can you please make a natasha x reader fic where they both have been dating for a while and it's natasha's birthday and the reader surprises her with a brand new suit that she made herself and nat cries bc she never got a meaningful gift and the reader also surprises her with cake and more romantic gifts. you could make the reader tony's sister so it would make more sense that she's good at making suits but you don't have to!! thank you sm i need sum cute natty 😫
Birthday Suit
Warning: Use of the pet name Sunflower,
Match: Natasha Romanoff x Reader
Genre: Fluff
A/N: So this one was fun. I hate my birthday but this actually was cute. I’m trying a new way of presenting the dialogue. aesthetically it looks better but I’m not sure how it reads. I've seen other authors do the dialogue on completely seperate lines so just lmk if this is good.
Word Count: ~2.5 k
Summary: It’s Natasha's birthday, and despite her acting like she hates it you shower her with love.
The smell of cooking cake fills the compound. Even from the workshop, where you are, the sweet scent permeates the air. You have been baking for long enough to know what that smell means, the cake is almost done.
You check the clock on the wall. 2:44. Nat would be home at 5.
“Shit. I need to get this done,”
You shake your head and set down your wire cutters. The list of everything you need to get done before she arrives rolls through your mind.
It was her birthday. She didn’t know her actual birthday so years ago she made one up. The chosen date was a closely guarded secret she only shared with those she trusted most. For the most part the assassin didn’t even celebrate. When you had asked a week prior what she wanted to do she had brushed you off claiming,
“I don’t really care. As long as I get to be with my love.”
She had kissed you, hoping the kiss would fog your mind from any further planning. Unfortunately for her you were a big schemer, always going as big as you could for your friend’s birthdays.
You walked out of the workshop, making one last longing look at her unfinished gift on your messy work table. No one was around today. The one Saturday everyone had off a month. Natasha had gone shopping with Wanda, a plan conncocted to give you plenty of time to get everything ready.
“Friday do you mind turing the oven off?”
you asked the A.I. as you headed down the hallway.
“Of course Agent Y/L/N,”
entering the kitchen you picked up a discarded list of everything that needed to be done. Two items were crossed off “Bake the cake, movie fort.” The unmarked items looked at you teasingly and you felt anxiety rise in your chest. What if you didn’t get everything done and this birthday made Natasha hate birthdays even more? You shook your head trying to chase off the thoughts and went to the oven.
“One perfectly baked chocolate cake coming up,”
grabbing an oven mitt you pulled the cake out of the oven and placed it on the counter. Carefully you coerced the cake from the pan and set it on the cooling rack.
Back when Wanda and you ventured into the baking realm you had begged Tony to put in a floor to ceiling blast chiller. The kind that was always on baking competitions. He reluctantly agreed, with the price of always having to give him a taste of your creations. The freezer was immensely helpful in tight circumstances. You were more than grateful for it now.
You set your cake into the freezer and went to the pantry to pull out all the ingredients you needed for icing. You poured the powdered sugar and placed the butter into the bowl. When you turned on the mixer a cloud of sugary powder exploded in the kitchen. You blinked and licked your lips. Bringing a hand up to wipe your face, you laughed hard. Sugar covered the entire counter and floor beneath you, not to mention your already grease stained clothes.
“Wow, is my little sibling doing coke in here? And without me!”
a snarky voice sounded from across the room. You opened your eyes and squinted at your older brother with a scrunched nose.
“Can it Tony,”
You growled, grabbing a towel and wiping yourself off the counter. Tony laughed at you and opened the freezer to look at what sweet treats awaited him tonight.
“A cake? Are we celebrating?”
He laughed and made a teasing face. You rolled your eyes and called out to Friday.
“Can you order me four containers of icing from the store to be delivered?”
“You got it!”
her chipper accented voice came over the audio. You threw the towel in the sink and landed a punch in Tony’s arm as you left to go change.
“You better not eat any of that cake until Nat has had at least one slice. I know where you keep those rare magic cards you think no one knows about and I will not hesitate to cut them all in half,”
He looked at you in shock. Whether it was because you knew about the secret stash or because you would dare cut them you weren’t sure. The only way to get Tony mad was to go for something he couldn’t replace with money.
“YOU WOULDN'T FUCKING DARE,”
You run away as he climbs out of his chair and chases after you. You run into your room and lay on the door to push back a Tony who was only a few steps behind you. When you finally force the door into the frame you turn the lock and fall to the floor laughing.
Angry mumbling came from the other side. Tony pounded on the door twice before, defeated. walking away. After catching your breath you pulled your sugar stained clothes off and changed into the outfit you’d set aside that morning.
“Y/N the man just arrived with the icing,”
Friday called out to your room and you nodded.
“Thank you Friday. Have him set the bags in the kitchen,”
Friday hummed in agreement. You stood up and looked in the mirror checking yourself out. When you were satisfied with the look you unlocked the door and turned to the right. You really needed to finish Natasha’s present. You wouldn’t even have time to test it properly. You really hoped the phrase “it’s the thought that counts,” was true. Her gift could be something that got you endless kisses or a real crash and burn.
Making it to the lab you set your hand on your head and groaned. You really hoped it worked. It was so pretty. You grabbed the wrapping paper and box and set it in with a kiss.
“Natty, I hope you like it,”
The gift finished the fort built, and cake baked, there was only one thing left to do, ice the damn cake. You could bake sure, but only Wanda ever mastered the art of making it look beautiful.
When you made it to the kitchen Tony was nowhere in sight and a plastic bag with what you assumed was icing was set on the counter. You pulled out a butter knife and dug in, hoping this looked somewhat edible. Wanda was the one who was skilled at decorating. You could make the elaborate pastry chef treats, but you could never handle the finer details of making it look pretty.
~
You were in the workshop when Friday alerted you that Wanda and Natasha were home. A feeling similar to anxiety or excitement fluttered in your chest. This was the first time you’d celebrated her birthday with your girlfriend. You wanted her to like birthdays again. To feel as special and loved as you can pour out for her.
“Thank you Friday. Please tell them I’m in the workshop and will be heading to the game room shortly,”
You set down the gauntlet you’d been fixing while waiting for them and brushed off your outfit. Your eyes searched over the shirt for stains, and when you were satisfied you were clean you headed to your “party”.
Wanda was the first to come in. She threw her hands to her face and “oood” and “aweeed” over the spread you had out.
“Y/N your cake! it’s…. adorable,”
you punched her in the shoulder with a frown. She fell over laughing.
“I TRIED! and I’m sure it tastes amazing.”
you crossed your arms and pouted. She sat back up still laughing and patted your back.
“She’ll love it Y/N. Even if it had ‘fuck you Nat’ written on top she’d love it,”
you smiled at the complement and stopped pouting. You were explaining the technology behind Nat’s present when the woman of the hour finally walked in.
“What is all this? Are y’all having a party? and didn’t invite me,”
she sat down next to you intertwining your fingers with hers and kissing your shoulder. You smiled as the excitement anxiety mix returned.
“Actually…. it’s for you,”
You smiled and kissed her hands. She looked genuinely surprised. You really hoped the feeling was happy excitement.
“oh- Y/N y-you remembered? and you didn’t have to do any of this. I thought I told you i didn’t care to celebrate,”
you felt Wanda stand up to leave with a pat on your shoulder. You smiled up at her and turned back to Natasha.
“I know I know, but I wanted to do something special. You love me so well and work so hard all the time. You deserve a day that’s unapologetically about you,”
You knew if Natasha didn’t have such complete control of her emotions she would be crying. The agape mouth gave that away. You smiled and leaned forward pulling her into a deep, intimate kiss. Feeling her smile against your lips you pulled away and leaned your forehead against hers.
“I love you Natashka. I will do anything to make you feel like Queen of the world,”
with that she started crying. You frowned and wiped away the tears.
“I really hope those are happy tears,”
she nodded quickly and smiled, sniffling a little.
“Very very happy tears. happy ‘I don’t know what on Earth i did to deserve you’ tears,”
“It is I who does not deserve you. The Great Black Widow. I’m just here to make you smile, it’s my life goal,”
you bowed as much as you could sitting down. Placing a peck on her lips you turned back to the presents and pointed.
“Which one should we open first?”
she pondered and then picked up a small box. Nimble fingers unwrapped the box and pulled out a Ring. You had managed to get her size weeks earlier fitting one of your own on her finger when hanging out. She looked at the little silver band with a carved sunflower at the head. A smile bloomed across her face and she hugged you.
“Oh my goodness Y/N, it’s so pretty…,”
she slid it onto her fingers, finding the one it fit best and stared at it. You hugged her shoulder and kissed her cheek.
“Well, you are my sunflower. It’s just a reminder when we are away,”
Her eyes lit up at the nickname. It wasn’t as common for you to use it as baby or sweetheart, but sunflower had always been her favourite.
She looked at the other boxes realising they were also for her. You picked up the next box, a medium sized one and handed it to her. You were saving the biggest for last.
She was just in awe and set it down before unwrapping it. Her hands snaked around your waist and pulled you flush to her. Her soft lips pressed kisses to your jaw and she set her head on your shoulder.
“Thank you so much Y/N, I- no one has done something like this for me ever,”
She hugged you tight again and then let go picking back up the present. You nodded and kissed her head. Pushing some hair out of her face you stroked her hair softly. Her hands once again unwrapped the gift. She squeaked at the sight of the book underneath the paper.
Natasha never got to read much on her own accord growing up. The red room picked out books for her education but never anything she would actually enjoy. Long ago Natasha had told you the first book she read after getting out of the red room was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and since then she adored the book. You had found, and paid for with Tony’s credit card, a first edition of the book. The auction was rough but you needed that book for Natasha.
Natasha stared at the book once, again jaw hanging open. She wiped her hands on her pants before handingly the book with utmost care. She flipped it over and ran her fingertips over the indented letters and gold illustration on the front.
“Y-you like it? I know you said you like Alice in Wonderland. It’s uh… actually a first edition copy. Tony was about ready to kill me when he saw me pay for the bid,”
You laughed nervously. She turned the book around again and then set it on the coffee table. She tackled you and pushed you back on the couch kissing all over your face. You yelped in surprise then grabbed her hips, catching her lips and kissing her roughly. She melted into the kiss but you pulled away.
“As much as I love this Natty, let’s open your last gift and eat some cake,”
You sat up and pulled her so she was in your lap. You placed a soft kiss to the back of her neck as she reached for the last gift. It was heavy but the assassin had no trouble lifting it.
“After that we can makeout in the fort I made. yeah?”
You wrapped your arms around her waist and pulled her close to you, rubbing circles on her thigh. She laughed and nodded, blushing profusely.
“I like that idea Y/N,”
She opened the box and pulled out the gift you put months of effort into. This time her reaction wasn’t as instantaneous. You helped her pull all the pieces out and set it on the coffee table. She looked at it slightly perplexed.
“I’m sorry… I’m not exactly sure what it is,”
She pouted and looked at you. You smiled and nodded knowing she wouldn’t. You set it out so she could see all the parts.
“Well… uh it’s a new suit. You always say that you don’t like how tight and revealing your other ones are so I kinda beefed this one up so it focuses on functionality,”
She nodded along as you explained. A look of understanding crossed her face as she pulled at the sleeves.
“ohhhhhhhh. That makes so much sense. I- Y/N what the fuck. I can’t express it enough. You are the best, you listened to me and used it to give me the best gifts i’ve ever gotten. You are the most thoughtful partner,”
You beamed. The feeling you knew she was struggling to express, it was exactly what you’d wanted her to feel. Loved, heard, appreciated, and cared for.
“I’m glad sunflower. That’s what I wanted. To make you feel as good as you deserve. D-do you mind if I tell you a bit about the features? I didn’t have time to test some of them so I will need to do that before you take it into combat,”
She nodded and slid off your lap to look at you. You patted her legs and squeezed then held at the sleeve first.
“Well of course it wouldn’t be a suit for the Black widow without gauntlets. These can change through three different modes for different levels and types of stuns also a laser if you need that for aiming,”
You flipped on the laser and pointed it at a pot then turned it back off.
“Also I made it so the suit can suction to your body but be limp to put it on. a lot easier to slip on ya know. And there is mobile but thick padding on all major points of contact for falling. Shoulders, hips, elbows, knees, the like.”
Natasha ran her hands over the surprisingly thin padding and smiled.
“Wow baby that’s… amazing,”
You nodded and picked up the bag attached to the back.
“And uh there’s a parachute built in as well as pockets up the legs, arms and boots so you don’t have to have the belts. They are sorta magnetic so you can like open them easily but when they are closed everything stays in. OH AND THE BOOTS,”
You started to ramble on about the energy absorbing boots you worked with Shuri on that would allow Nat to drop from double the height of a normal human with no damage to her knees or feet. Nat just stared at you hungirly.
“Hey baby, I seriously appreciate the gift. It’s honestly the best thing I've ever gotten. Why don’t we try it out tomorrow and you can show me EVERYTHING. For now we can… sit in the fort like you said,”
She had a cocky smile and you blushed at her antics. You nodded quickly, cutting off your rambling. Her hands found your waist and she pulled you off the couch and into the pillow fort you had built.
“I uh- got a movie for us to watch. Do you want to?”
She nodded and smiled. A look that very much meant “Yes. That's sweet, but I doubt we will be watching it.” You pulled her into your lap, setting your hands on her waist. She draped hers over your shoulders and rubbed light circles on the back of your neck. You leaned forward and trapped her lips in a kiss. Soft but full of passion.
The rest of that night was spent watching the movie and kissing. When you finally remembered the cake a slice had been taken out of it, with
“You were busy with Romanoff so I took what I was owed. The package has been moved, try getting me now little sibling.”
On a sticky note beside it. Natasha had laughed, unsure exactly what had happened but sure it was a story she would much enjoy hearing.
She had moaned over how good the cake was after laughing at how “Adorably” it was decorated.
“So Nat… did I make this birthday worth celebrating?”
She smiled wide and nodded.
“Yes Y/N, if every birthday was like this I would never want to stop celebrating.”

Distant Shores-1
Summary: The heathens came to raid every year, stealing treasures and killing along the way. Your father was the King of Wessex and wanted to strike a deal with the heathens. The heathens and their ruthless numbers in exchange for some lands to farm, riches... and you. You are the Christian princess that is now to marry the Heathen King, a man that you're sure would rather kill you than marry you. This is going to be a miserable marriage.
A Viking!BakugouxReader fic.
Warnings: Arrange Marriage, general viking things, abusive father
They came every year, rowing to shore in their long boats with the intricately decorated dragon or serpent heads, shields of all colors decorating the sides. They would set up camp near the edges of the water, far enough to stay dry but not so far that they couldn't leave in a haste if need be. Violent in their tendencies and lacking the most simple of manners. Vulgar in their speech but carefree and happy. Men and women fighting side by side. They were tall, muscular, built like the gods they worshiped. Some with long hair that was braided back from their face, others with the sides shorn short and what was left was braided. Almost all had some sort of facial hair, minus the young ones desperately trying to grow it in, and if that was long enough it would be braided as well. Their clothing was not all together different from what you were used to. Perhaps not as ostentatious or gaudy as a he clothing around court. It was practical and useful, rather than just for show. Your father, the King of Wessex, was intrigued by these heathens as he called them. They had came ashore last year, destroying a few temples and killing all the holy men and women inside of them while stealing all the treasure inside, before taking their leave back to their homelands. It was interesting to say the least, though they had heard of these northmen before this was only the second time they had made camp on their shores. So In an effort of good faith your father decided to invite them to the castle, to talk he said. He wanted to strike a deal with them. He was going to offer a few things he thought they could not refuse. So he sent out a messenger to bring back their leaders for a feast. They spoke in a different tongue, looking at the women of court with lustful eyes as they ate. One man, who seemed to be their leader spoke up as he looked at the King. "What is it you have to offer me?" He spoke your language but it was choppy with the words out of place. You were surprised to find he knew the words at all. His hair was short on the sides, the rest braided back until it ended in a short pony tail. He had red eyes that you felt could pierce through anything or anyone. Scars littered his arms and bare chest, an axe and a sword at his hips. "Well, I am willing to offer some lands for you to do as you wish. Farm, build settlements. They are yours to do as you wish. I am also willing to offer you something more." The man said, grinning at the Viking earl. "I am offering my pure daughter, Y/N, to you." You. You were an offering. You always knew that your marriage would be arranged but you didn't think like this. To someone who had different customs, a different language, a different land someone who was different in almost every way possible. You wanted to throw up
The last thing that you thought your father was going to offer up was you. After all you were his only daughter and you figured that you would be married off to someone, a prince or lord in order for you father to gain some lands or troops for wars. Though you supposed this was kind of the same thing. The last thing that you expected was to be offered up to the Heathen King. You could feel his gaze on you, calculating red eyes watching your every move. You kept your eyes downcast, a habit from living in the castle for so long. You tried your hardest to hide the look of shock on your face, train it into a neutral expression.
"Well aren't you lucky, you get the Christian princess." One of the men next to the Heathen king spoke to him, in their language. One that you didn't understand.
"I have no need for a wife... but I could make it work. His proposition is interesting. I feel like he is going to double cross us."
The viking seemed to contemplate for a minute, hand rubbing over his chin as he looked you up and down before looking back at his men. "I will accept your offer, but I am surprised you would give up your virgin daughter to such a... heathen like myself." You could feel your face heat up at that, like they were talking about you without you even being there, despite the fact that you could feel the Vikings eyes on you the entire time.
"Well you are the man I need to make an alliance with right now." Your father stated, leaning back in his chair. "She will make a fine wife, I'm sure she can adjust to your ways." It became quite obvious to Bakugou that the king did not care about his daughter and what happened to her. He knew of the rumors that were spread about them. How they raped women and killed them when they no longer 'served their purpose.' He could tell you were scared but it seemed as though your father did not care.
"Then she will leave with us in the morning, we will be married under our Gods." Bakugou grunted, taking a long drink out of his cup, eyes never leaving your shaking frame. There was not much more that you could take, you didn't want to marry yet let alone a barbarian that you didn't even know. Someone who hardly spoke your language, who had different customs and Gods than you.
You excused yourself and made your way out of the hall, running as soon as you were out of sight. You couldn't slow your breaths, they were coming much too fast. You felt as though you were hyperventilating and needed to calm down. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad, maybe it would be okay. Once you made it to your room you had calmed down just a bit. You still did not want to marry this man. He looked cruel and would surely just have his way with you.
You sighed as you sat at your vanity, taking out the clips and pins that held your hair up in its complicated look. You supposed now you'd have to have it in the braids you saw on all the Viking women. You moved it back away from your face when you heard a knock on the door that caused your heart to race. You knew it was your father, sent to give you instructions that you didn't want to follow.
"Well, you embarrassed me out there. Running away like that, it's almost like you don't want to marry that brute." Your father hadn't waited for an answer to come in. "You have to make him happy, the last thing I want is them storming our shores because you're too stupid to please this man."
"Father I don't want to marry him. I do not know him and... and what if he kills me? You could marry me off to a prince from a neighboring land and they could offer your army to help if the viki,.." you started to say before you were struck against the cheek. The king of Wessex didn't like being told what to do, especially not by a woman.
"You will listen to what I have to say child, you will do as you are told, no questions. You will marry that brute and you will like it. Keep him pleased bed remind him of our treaty or I can send someone to remind you of your place." Your father threatened, pointing a finger in your face while you held your cheek and tears sprang out of your eyes. You had thought perhaps he had some shred of love left for you, however he just saw you as a bargaining chip.
That night you did not sleep well, tossing and turning. Dreaming about a pair of bright red eyes.
The next morning your maids had dressed your for the last time, putting you in a simple dress and cloak that wasn't too showy but was still made of fine fabrics that showed your status. A bruise had formed on your cheek from your fathers ring but that was something he didn't try to hide anymore. His daughter had a wild tongue according to him, and he needed to correct it. This wasn't the first time that he had struck you, but you were hopeful it would be the last. Unless of course your new husband was the same.
You were told you didn't need to pack anything, your husband to be would provide everything that you'd need. Least that is what they told your father. So down you went to where they were waiting, restless horses under even more restless men. They'd been giving plenty of gold and treasures to get them through the winter so they were eager to get back home. "Here she is, your future wife." The King said, presenting you to the Viking leader. You dared to look up at him, seeing the same eyes that had plagued your dreams. You watched his eyes flick around your face, lingering on your cheek before landing on your eyes. You soon looked away, not wanting to cause any new problems. It was the way you were raised, never look a man too long in the eyes. It was disrespectful. "She has some problems obeying but I am sure you can get her in line." The king winked befor pushing your towards the horse that Bakugou was on. He looked down at you before hoisting you on top of the beast to sit in front of him. Your face turned a bright pink, you'd never been this close to a man before, and his bare chest was burning into your back. You supposed that you'd have to get used to this if you were to be married soon.
Your father and future husband shared a few words with each other that you didn't pay attention to before you were off. The entire ride the few Vikings that had come along we're all talking in their own language, nothing that you understood but they seemed to be in good spirits, laughing and joking. You were lost in your own world, gently running your fingers over the horses mane before you heard the man behind you speak up. "What happened to your face?"
You weren't expecting it after how quiet he'd been for the entire ride so you jumped at the sudden noise behind you. You chewed on your cheek, deciding on an answer before landing on, "My father was correcting me. That is all." You weren't sure of the correct answer but that apparently wasn't it as you heard a grunt behind you and a small growl.
Before long you made it back to the Viking camp, which was mostly torn down at this point, bustling with activity. The boats were being packed, tents torn down and supplies being put up. You were in awe at how fast they worked, and were intrigued with the people and what they were doing. It was almost like a culture shock, you were used to the castle and this was something different. The man that was to be your husband helped you off your horse and gave you a warning to stay close. In the matter of an hour everything was packed up, you staying close to the man was he went around inspecting work and checking things before he lifted you onto a boat and climbed on himself.
The boat itself was amazing, all the little attentions to detail was beautiful, your fingers traced over the edge and the little designs there. You were again in awe, you could deal with this. If you could see little things of beauty like this then you could take it. Once set off to the sea your eyes were wide with wonder. You hadn't ever been this far before, you hadn't even been out on the water and it was breath taking. You couldn't get enough. That is... until you were sprayed in the face with the water. You coughed and shook your head, as the men on the boat laughed. You didn't complain however, you were still just in awe of the sights. What you didn't notice was a curious pair of eyes watching you from the other end of the boat, never leaving you as he watched you drink in everything. He was curious about you, that was for sure.
After getting hit with the ocean water you learned your lesson about staying too close to the edge. However as night time drew closer and the sun went below the horizon it was freezing and your cloak wasn't cutting it. However you didn't complain, instead just hugged it closer to yourself.
"It looks like your princess is going to freeze to death." One of the rowing men commented, looking over to Bakugou. "Might want to warm her up."
Bakugou heard this and in turn stood up with a grunt before walking over to you and unceremoniously dropped on of his furs onto your shoulders. You looked curiously up at him, but melted into the warmth it gave. "Thank you." You chattered out, cuddling close to the furs.
"Can't let you freeze, princess." Bakugou murmured as shuffled back over to where he came from. You watched him go and smiled softly, perhaps he wasn't so bad after all.

Come Back Home
Pairing: Dick Grayson (DC Titans) x Reader
Warnings: Mentions of death and miscarriage
Word Count: 4.5K
Summary: Years after the two of you broke up, Dick Grayson comes back to your life. But he doesn’t know you’ve been hiding a secret all this time.
A/N: @imcarolinashannon and I were talking about angst fics so I decided to write this. I probably might do a second part so if you want to be tagged in that then just send me a message or something
Dick lounged comfortably in Donna’s living room. She promised to meet up with him but unfortunately, she was running late. Dick had no trouble letting himself in and laying down on her couch, waiting for her to get home.
He heard the door open and opted to stay silent, wanting to see her reaction when she realized he had broken in. Technically he hadn’t really broken in but used the key that she hid underneath the doormat.
He silently waited for Donna to come to the living room, feeling childish but at the same time anticipating it.
“Don?”
That wasn’t Donna’s voice.
“Don? You here? The door was left open…”
Dick stiffened. That voice. He’s heard that voice before.
“Don? I—” Your voiced cut off suddenly, whatever was in your hands slipped and fell to the ground. You barely even realized, just hearing a faint thump in the back of your head as the plastic bag hit the floor.
It had been so long.
Dick Grayson hadn’t changed one bit since the last time you had seen him. You on the other hand, looked like age had caught up with you, but in Dick’s eyes you looked as beautiful as the day he last saw you.
That day flashed vividly in his head. You looking beautiful and holding him close to your heart. The ache he felt that day. He couldn’t bear to say anything and break your heart. He couldn’t break your heart again. Saying goodbye to you while you were asleep. Leaving a note on the nightstand.
And then leaving without a second look back.
He never let himself rethink his decision. When he got drunk, he’d shed silent tears when he thought about you, but he’d never let himself call you up. When he got your letters, he’d keep them by his nightstand, but he’d never let himself read it. He feared he’d listen to you and come back.
He didn’t deserve to have you in his life again.
Looking at you again after all these years. He wondered if he made the right decision. He wondered if he should’ve just given into his selfishness. But beyond everything, the void in his heart was made that much more apparent to him when he noticed the way you were looking at him. It was guarded, but at the same time emotional.
It was like you felt something, but you didn’t want to show him.
It was like that for a few seconds, where you were just stuck staring at each other, frozen in time. Neither of you dared to move a muscle. It was calm, too calm. And the two of you were afraid that it would start a storm.
So just as quickly as you came, you backtracked and ran away.
“(Y/N) wait—!” Dick started, moving for you before he could stop himself. He couldn’t let you slip through his fingers. He just needed a few more minutes. A few more minutes to look at you and realize what he gave up. A few more minutes.
But you were already booking it down the hallway when he made it to the door. It was then he found the strength to stop himself. He had to. He couldn’t ask for you to wait. You probably waited a lot already. He couldn’t ask you to wait anymore.
So, he let you slip through his fingers again.
But this time it was him who had to watch you walk away.
And it was only then he realized how much it hurt to be left behind.
***
When the Titans split up you were the only one who remained in San Francisco. Waiting. Just waiting for someone to return. Anyone.
Everything happened so quickly. Garth was taken from you, as well as Jericho, and everything just changed in the span of a night. The family that you had built had broken and no one seemed to have the energy to put back the pieces together.
You remember the same monotonous days, the days where you couldn’t feel anything, when you just woke up to go back to sleep and slept to pretend that none of this ever happened. It was suffocating and exhausting, but you had no way to pull yourself out into the light.
You remember holding onto your fiancé a little tighter that night, your body shaking even though you weren’t cold. You remember sleeping a little heavier that night, as if your body couldn’t bear to wake up to this existence anymore. You remember feeling cold and empty.
You remember waking up to find the space next to you on the bed empty and you immediately knew what had happened. Dick had taken off. You had known it was coming, for a while now, but you couldn’t seem to believe it.
For a while you just stared at the note he left behind with an emotionless gaze. This week had been hell enough, what was another punch? At least things couldn’t get worse.
For a while you just held the note loosely between your fingers, not bothering to move from your bed. You knew you were supposed to be feeling sad, but your heart couldn’t afford it. You couldn’t feel anything anymore.
So, you just stood up from bed, moving unsteadily to the kitchen, not being able to process anything. You just went to the fridge and got yourself a glass of milk before going back to the couch and turning on the television. It was playing but you weren’t watching it.
The sorrow of losing your best friends and your fiancé didn’t hit you until a few days later. You ran out of milk and were looking for something else to drink. Opening the fridge reserved for alcohol, you grabbed whatever touched your fingers first.
An orange soda.
Then your gaze moved to the diamond ring sitting snugly on your finger. The bottle slipped through your fingers, falling onto the ground along with your body. You held yourself as you cried, screamed for someone to come back. For someone to save you through this loneliness.
You cried for what seemed like forever, until you felt dry and then you cried some more. You couldn’t even bring yourself to get off the floor, letting the sticky orange soda soak into your pants and the glass shards of the broken bottle sink into your legs.
Crying felt like the only thing you were capable of. You weren’t able to do anything else, even consoling yourself was far from your mind. All you could do was mourn the death of your friend and the death of your friendships.
Your breath left your body, your stomach churned painfully and your heart clenched in your chest. You couldn’t stand the thought of saying goodbye. You just couldn’t do what the others had and leave your family in the past. You couldn’t bring yourself to.
So, you waited, for someone to return, for anyone to return. You waited and waited, until it had been engrained into your behaviour, until it had been the first thing you thought about in the morning and the last thing you thought about at night. You waited.
You knew the day would come when this void in your heart would be filled.
If you had just waited.
But you eventually gave up the hope of them coming back, you gave it all up. You figured they would never come back home. That they found new homes. That they forgot about you. At this point you wondered if even one of your family members would return.
Nothing could have prepared you for Donna’s phone call one day. She told you that she was back in town and wanted to see you again. Something told you it was too good to be true. Something else told you to give into your pride and bail on her like she did so many years ago.
But against your better judgement, you still agreed to meet with her.
You weren’t expecting to come face to face with the man who left you behind so many years ago. However unhealthy it may have been, you never let yourself think about how you were really feeling when this devastation hit you.
You never tried to identify your feelings.
Rather, you tried to distract yourself and move forward. And it had worked. Until you made eye contact with Dick and had to wonder whether you should break down, get angry and scream or just be happy and relieved to see him again.
It was something you couldn’t handle. You couldn’t even begin to think about it. You couldn’t.
So, you didn’t have to think twice when your legs stumbled back and sprinted out of Donna’s apartment and out of the building.
Only when you were safely back home did you stop running, ignoring the calls from Donna for the rest of the day and instead drowning your sorrows in orange soda, trying to forget this ever happened.
***
Donna eventually managed to track you down to your apartment where you were just laying around your couch. While you were feeling overwhelmed to invite her into your home you were also excited to just sit down and talk with her again.
“Hey, (Y/N),” Donna smiled, pulling you in for a hug, “It’s been so long. Nice place you have here.” She commented, taking off her coat as you shut the door behind her.
“Oh, it’ just your run of the mill, one-bedroom apartment.” You said absentmindedly, “You can look around if you want.”
Donna did exactly that, moving to the passageway and then towards the one bedroom. The door was closed and she wondered if she was allowed to enter. You did say that you could look around so it wouldn’t do any harm.
“Hey, um, the door is locked.” She called out to you and there was an awkward beat of silence before you answered.
“Yeah, I, um, I keep the old suit and weapons there. Don’t want anybody to get in there, you know?”
Oh. Well, that made sense.
“Why don’t you come here and we can have a cup of tea of something.”
“So, what have you been up to?” You asked, getting a cup of tea ready for her. It had been a while since you had anyone in your place so you weren’t even sure where the second tea cup was.
“(Y/N), as much as I would love for this to just be a visit, I’m sorry but there’s something important that I have to tell you.”
Donna told you all about how Dick had reinstated the Titans and was actually in the city right now. You had already known that and made a conscious decision to stay far away from them. You had waited and waited and waited for them to return but when you finally moved on, they decide to show up again?
She told you about how each of the original Titans members were being targeted by an assassin, reasons and identity unknown and that she was here to bring you to the base for your protection.
“Listen, Donna, I hung up that suit a long time ago. If you guys are getting targeted then it’s probably because you started to get back into this life again. I’m fine and I haven’t been involved in it for a long time.” You told her.
“Yeah, (Y/N), I know but we all just think it would be safer—”
“Donna, I told you, I’ve moved on. I’m just an elementary school teacher now. No one is out to get me.”
A shot rang out through the apartment and your windows shattered.
The butt of the bullet shined from its hole in your wooden floors. It was a warning shot. And when you turned you saw the silhouette of a man on the roof of the apartment complex next to your building. He hid well and you couldn’t really make out any features.
The man held the gun up to eye level again and you jumped grabbing Donna’s arm and running towards the closet in the hallway before throwing it open and handing her a gun as shots rang out one after the other.
“I thought you said you kept all your superhero stuff in the other room?” She asked, seeing your costume hung in all it’s glory along with a number of weapons and gadgets.
“Is that really important now?!” You shouted, trying to pocket as many weapons as you could and then ran out into the hallway and past the staircase to the other side of the building
“What? (Y/N) what are we doing? The exit is over there!” She shouted, following you through the halls and she heard you click the safety off your gun before shooting at a lock and kicking the door open.
She ran behind you through an empty apartment and then through the window, scaling down the fire escape before making a break for it.
***
“So, you’re telling me I know have a target painted on my back because the rest of you couldn’t stop playing dress up?” You asked with a furious bite to your voice. The rest of the members held their head down, trying to avoid your gaze.
You were always the mother of the group, looking after people and making sure everyone was okay. But everybody knew when you were angry, there was nothing topping you from ripping them to shreds. The only thing they could do was try their hardest not to agitate you.
Even though none of them were scared of you and they probably could be equally matched with you in a fight. They would probably ever win, because you haven’t been out in the field for a year. But there was just something about your fiery gaze and your sharp voice that made their hearts quicken and them lower their heads in shame.
“(Y/N),” Dawn began with a placating voice, trying to put out your anger, “I know your mad but—”
“Mad?! I’m furious! What the hell were you imbeciles thinking?! Oh, let me guess, absolutely nothing!”
Usually when you were this angry, the team would send Dick your way, knowing that you could never stay angry with him for long. Even though years have passed and your relationship was now broken, it seemed like their strategies were still ingrained into their minds.
“(Y/N), look we just—” Dick began, moving towards you gently so he could hold you but you snapped at him, glaring at him so harshly that he actually took a few steps back and sat back into his seat.
“Oh, shut up, daddy issues! I don’t even wanna start with you!”
Hank immediately stood up then, getting annoyed with you constantly yelling at him. He was a grown man, why should he have to hear you shout at him like he was a little kid?
“Look, (Y/N), none of us—”
“Sit! The fuck! Down!”
No one could appreciate how funny Hank looked, slinking back to his seat like a kicked puppy.
“I seem to recall all of you saying that you wanted to leave this life behind! And now because none of you could actually give it up, my apartment is trashed, all my stuff probably has bullet holes and now I’m stuck here with no clothes, no stuff and all of you!”
“I could lend you some clothes if you like.” Donna said meekly from beside Dick, trying to lighten the atmosphere.
“Oh, well all of my problems are solved! Thank you so much!”
“I can’t believe this.” You murmured with a quiet voice and the rest recognized that you were finished with yelling. To be quite honest it was just a lot to process. You thought you had left these monsters in the past. It felt like they were trying to pull you back in by your ankles.
“I’m sorry.” Dick spoke up quietly and you sighed, seeing how ashamed he looked. He probably felt horrible, and that didn’t excuse him, but you couldn’t bear to keep yelling when you knew they felt apologetic towards you.
Maybe that’s why you were always being taken advantage of.
“Not like we can do anything about it now.” You said quietly, not making eye contact with either of them and instead just turning around and walking out of the mission room, briefly passing Rachel as you made your way to the kitchen.
You needed a shot.
Rachel stepped into the room once you left with a dazed look, clutching her arm that brushed against you as you walked out. It didn’t go unnoticed by the others.
“Rachel? Is everything okay?”
“I—” You started but then stopped herself, not quite understanding what she was feeling, “Yeah, I’m fine.”
***
You were formally introduced to the rest of the team by the end of the day. Dick watched with a gentle smile as you made witty banter with Jason and told Gar how adorable he was as he blushed.
“Hi, I’m Rachel.”
“Hey, Rachel, I’m (Y/N), it’s nice to meet you.” You smiled and held out your hand for her to shake. As soon as her skin came into contact with yours a gasp l4eft her lips.
Behind her closed eyelids she saw bits and pieces of your memories. She saw you writing letters. Even though you weren’t speaking she could hear what you were writing in her head. It was just bits and pieces of you writing letters but she could feel all the emotions that you felt as you wrote it down.
‘Hey love, it’s (Y/N), I love you, please come home.’
‘Dick it’s been weeks, please come home. There’s been something I’ve been meaning to tell you, and I was hoping I could do it in person but I can’t. Dick, I’m pregnant. I’m pregnant with your child so I need you to come home. Please.’
You sent an ultrasound along with the letter and behind it in your handwriting was ‘Please, come home, our baby needs you.’
‘Dick, I want to fly out to Detroit and see you but my Doctor says it isn’t safe for me to fly. I’m about 3 months along and I just heard his heartbeat today. I’m so scared of doing this alone, Dick. I can’t do this alone. Please come home. I need you.’
‘I don’t know if you’re even reading my letters, Dick, but I’m going to keep sending them. If it’s the only way I can talk to you then I’m going to keep sending them. I’m craving a lot of sweets, so if you decide to come home all you need to do is bring back a s’more or something to get me to forgive you, okay? I’ll forgive you, I promise, just please come back home.’
‘I found out the sex of the baby today. It’s gonna be a boy. Dick, we’re gonna have a son and I don’t think I can raise him without you. Please come back home, let’s raise our son together. Please just even call me, or even just sending me a letter back is enough. Something. Anything, Dick, please.’
‘He’s starting to kick more often now, he’s really very active. He loves it when we watch your favourite movie. I don’t know why but I can feel it when we watch it together. He feels happy. Come back home and you can feel his kicks yourself. You don’t know how amazing that feels until it happens. I talk to him a lot; I tell him about you and I know he probably doesn’t understand but It feels like he does. I’m so scared to do this alone, Dick, I don’t think I can. Would you please come home now?’
‘I’ve been getting these things called Braxton Hick’s contractions. They were scary and new but apparently nothing to worry about. That’s what the doctor’s say but I can’t help but get scared, you know? It was absolutely heart-breaking to have to get myself to the hospital. I have friends, but let’s face it, none of them can actually take on the burden of having a child. And I couldn’t ask them to. I still love you, Dick. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of you. Our son, he feels so familiar, like there was a piece of you left behind. I’m starting to lose hope of you coming back, but I’m still going to keep writing letters because our son needs his father.’
Scenes flashes one after another and her head began spinning with images and she felt dizzy. Eventually her head cleared up and her eyes focused on your staring at her with concerned eyes.
“Rachel, is everything okay?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah, yeah I’m fine.”
“Are you sure, you blanked out for a second there.”
Yeah, Yeah I’m fine.”
You seemed to buy her explanation and left the room along with the boys when they offered to show you around. Rachel still stood in the middle of the kitchen, seemingly frozen.
Dick walked up to her, putting a hand on her shoulder and that seemed to pull her out of her trance but she still seemed pretty shaken up.
“Hey, is everything okay?”
“She sent you letters, didn’t she?”
His brows furrowed as he scanned her face. There was something about it that he couldn’t pin-point, that he couldn’t read. It didn’t surprise him that she knew that you had written letters to him but what surprised him was that she asked about it. Usually, she never did.
“Yeah, she did.”
“You never read them, did you?” She asked again, meekly, breaking eye contact with him. She sounded disappointed and hurt but he couldn’t understand why. Maybe if he just explained the situation to her, she would understand.
“No, I never did.” He was going to tell her why. He was going to explain himself. But just as the moment came, Rachel started pulling herself away, moving towards her bedroom like she was lost.
“You should have.”
***
After his conversation with Rachel, Dick wondered what could have been in those letters that made her so shaken up. That made her distance herself from him for the next few days. It was heart-breaking to watch her pull away from him whenever he wanted to talk.
The longer Rachel distanced herself from him, the longer he wondered what exactly was in those letters. Rachel seemed to think that he should have read those letters, but what could’ve been in there that was so terrible?
Obviously, you were well and you looked like you had completely turned your life around, so what could it have been that Rachel thought he should find out about even after all these years?
The curiosity was enough to make him find those letters but not enough to give him the courage to read them. But he still needed to, he absolutely had to, so he opened the first letter you ever sent him.
Around an hour later, all the letters were opened and scattered around his bed. Nothing was going through his head. He didn’t even here you when you called him for dinner from the kitchen.
“Dick? Dinner’s ready. What are you….?” It was then you noticed the opened letters sitting on his bed, “What is this?”
“The letters you sent me.” He told you, his voice cracking and your breath caught. Your first emotion was to run away, to run far away but at the same time it felt like your feet were bolted to the floor. Dick looked up at you and you vaguely noticed the tears in his eyes.
For the first time, it felt like he finally understood how much leaving you had hurt him. He finally realized that he did more harm than good by leaving you. That he was missing out on his life’s greatest dream by leaving you. That while he was missing you, were begging him to come back.
“We have a son…” He started and you flinched, taking a sharp breath but not moving from your place in the doorway with your arms wrapped around your waist to protect yourself from what was going to come.
“I—I can’t believe this.” He spoke again and you bit your lip. Was he going to scream? Shout? Was he going to tell you that you should’ve aborted it? He stood up, albeit on shaky legs but still made his way towards you, keeping a few feet of distance between you.
You were scared of how he would react. You were worried about what he would say.
“I want to meet—”
“You can’t.” You said firmly, clenching your jaw hard as your nails dug into your palms. This was possibly the worst thing he could’ve said.
“Look I know that I shouldn’t have left. I realize that now. It was the worst thing I’ve ever done in my entire life and I’m sorry. But he’s my son too, please let me—”
“I lost it.” You murmured, not being able to meet his eyes and instead just lowered your eyes, “I lost our son.”
Just like that, Dick Grayson’s world began to crumble before his eyes.
“I woke up one night, in a pool of blood,” You spoke, screwing your eyes shut as you tried to fight the onslaught of tears. Dick immediately pulled you into a hug and you didn’t fight it, instead you fisted his shirt in your hands to keep you in this world and keep you from reliving that day.
“I called the ambulance and even though they got me to the hospital and did first aid, he was already gone when I got there.” You cried into his neck and his arms were tight around your shaking form, but he was shedding silent tears into your hair.
“It wasn’t your fault.” He said, voice cracking with guilt and a sob broke through you.
“That’s what everyone else said. But—I just—Can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if I had just been more careful. If I had taken care of myself more. If I had tried harder. We would still have our baby boy.”
“It wasn’t your fault.” He said once more, firmly this time, that you almost began to believe him.
“I was his mother. I was supposed to protect him. I failed.”
“I was his father. I was supposed to protect the both of you. I’m sorry I failed you.” He wanted to tell you that he loved you. The words were just on the tip of his tongue. But he couldn’t bring himself to. He couldn’t say it. He didn’t deserve to love you. And he didn’t deserve to tell you.
“I’m sorry (Y/N).” He said again before he broke down and the two of you fell to the floor, crying in each other’s arms.

Special shout-out to @navybrat817 for helping me with this idea
After too many nights scrolling through subreddits and searching for something to keep you distracted, you decided to bite the hook. Several other redditors agreed to hop on Minecraft and it had been a while since you logged in. You missed the almost relaxing ritual of mining and building.
You joined the chat, quick to hit the little microphone emblem as you listened to the voices in your headset. You learned long ago to keep your mic muted on the servers, especially with strangers. The last time you dared to speak up as a woman in a game chat, your DMs had become so overwhelmed you deleted and started a new account on Discord and changed your ID on Steam.
You were all given your tasks as players called out coordinates and you kept to chopping up the side of a mountain. You mostly worked alone, chatting through text instead of voice chat. As you placed a crafting table in your little mine, another player, JJ-Smooth, popped up and dropped some iron for you.
He stayed close but you didn’t mind. A lot of players tried to work together the deeper they got and you were used to it. As you uncovered some lava, he dumped water before you could get burned and helped you hack up the obsidian.
He thanked you on the voice chat but you knew any courtesy in return would earn you the attention of the entire server. So you dropped some gold for him and went on your way.
“I hear a zombie,” he warned.
You turned to hack up the undead before it could get you, only to be shot by a skeleton hidden on the next level. Another appeared and you died before you could hide, the bony villain killed by your ally as you watched your possession scatter over the death screen.
“Hey, I got your stuff,” he said as you loaded back up, “I’ll find you.”
You typed quickly in the chat, ‘sorry, mic busted, give me your coordinates and I’ll come to you.’
You waited as ‘JJ-Smooth is typing…’ appeared at the bottom and finally he sent the numbers. You hopped over the blocky hills and through the forests until you found the mine again. He was just outside and handed over all your tools and ration. He headed back into the mine and you followed him. This time, you began your own path in the opposite direction.
Before you knew it, you’d lost track of time. You sat back as you realised it was only you and JJ on the server. The silence should have tipped you off earlier. He was the host and you felt super awkward for staying so long. You typed that you were logging off for the night and thanked him.
You hit the keyboard with your knuckle and yawned as you opened the screen,
“God, it’s late,” you muttered.
“Hello?” he said.
Your eyes rounded as you looked at the mic symbol and the lack of red line made you cringe. You’d hit an extra button without noticing.
“Um, hi, sorry, I just--”
“Mic busted, huh?” he asked.
“No, I--” you didn’t know what to say, “anyways, I should--”
“So, you’re a chick? Is that why you mute?”
“Uh, well, it’s just… easier, sorry, I--” even if you weren’t trying to hide from gamer dudes, you weren’t the best at conversation.
“A gamer girl, nice,” he said and you sighed, “sorry, that sounded weird, didn’t it?”
“Mhmm,” you touched your bottom lip as you cupped your chin, “it’s late, I have to work tomorrow.”
“You comin’ back?” he asked, almost hopeful.
“I don’t know--”
“I won’t tell anyone,” he said abruptly, “promise, lips sealed.”
“I really don’t know if I can do this too much, I usually work early mornings so… yeah,” you said.
“I get it but you know you’re always welcome, hope you don’t mind if I send you an invite now and then. No pressure,” he offered.
“Uh, sure,” you shrugged, “okay, yeah, good night.”
You left the chat quickly and pulled off your headset. Shit.
‘I’m Jake by the way,’ a pm popped up, ‘gg.’
You typed back, ‘gg, it was fun’ and quickly logged out. You sat back and rubbed your eyes. Well, he didn’t seem like a total creep, maybe just a bit awkward but so were you. You shut down for the night and stretched out as you switched off the lamp. You were going to pay for your session in the morning.
🎮
A few nights later you got an invite to the server. You debated it but as it was Friday, you decided to make good use of the PC you’d saved up forever to build. You spawned in the middle of nowhere and built a bed before you found the half-finished settlement. You joined the chat but you must have been early as you were the only one there.
You headed back to the same mine, some work done since the first night, and laid your torches as you ventured into the depths. You jumped in your seat as a voice broke your peace.
“I don’t think anyone else is gonna join,” JJ-Smooth, or Jensen said, “you think maybe you’ll unmute?”
You stopped your mining and stared at the screen. You hovered over the mic button and re-read his name, he was the only other one there. You clicked and gave a strained smile to the screen.
“So, um, what’s the goal tonight?” you asked.
“Get some materials and go back to the settlement, keep building, oh, maybe we could try a portal, you ever gone to the nether?” he said but before you could reply he kept on, “shit, I shouldn’t assume, you seem like an experienced player.”
“Yeah, a few times, but I’m more a casual miner,” you went back to harvesting stone and ore.
“Ah,” he said, and it was silent for a moment, “so, you work again in the morning?”
“Not tomorrow,” you said as you focused on the game, “daycare isn’t open on the weekends.”
“A daycare, huh? That sounds fun, I love kids… not in a weird way but you know, I… urgh, I have a niece,” he said with a nervous chuckle, “nah, that’s cool though, sounds more fun than my gig.”
“Oh?” you turned and kept your axe moving.
“IT. You know, some people would be like ‘hey Jensen, why do you spend all your free time staring at a screen when that’s what you do at work?’” he scoffed, “well, who says I’m not mining there too.”
You wrinkled your forehead and gave a small laugh. He was rambling and it was kinda odd. You were happy for once not to be the strange one.
“But anyway,” he said, “I found lots of diamond over here. If we get some lapis lazuli we can build an enchanting table and get some sick armour.”
“Awesome,” you pressed your fingertips to your lip as you leaned on your elbow, “should try to head back before dark…”
“Hard to tell down here. How about you mine and I’ll keep an eye out for monsters?” he offered.
“Sure,” you agreed as he came onto your screen, “that works.”
🎮
Another week went by and you ventured back into the server a few times but not for very long as late nights did not mix with young children. The next weekend, you joined again on Saturday night and like the last few times it was just you and Jensen. You wondered why no one else was joining when the subreddit was so popular but you didn’t worry about it for long.
You mostly played in silence, Jensen did most of the talking and it was never about anything more than the game or his niece’s last soccer game. That night when you left the game, he kept typing on Discord.
‘I like playing with you,’ his message blipped up.
‘Same, thx.’
‘Really, you’re awesome.’
‘Thx :) Tired, gotta sleep.’
‘Sweet dreams.’
‘Night.’
You changed your status to offline and dragged yourself to bed. You opened your phone as you laid in the dark and went to the subreddit, you scrolled through the builds and screenshots of other people’s catastrophes.
You came to Jensen’s last invite post from that night but all the comments complained that the world code was incorrect. Hmm, you should tell him next time.
You blackened your cell and plopped it on your night table. You rolled over and buried your face in the pillow, the light still etched into your vision. You fell asleep quickly and woke the next day to another invite from Jensen.
‘How about some Fortnite? If you’re into it?’
‘Srry, can’t, my mom’s expecting me for lunch.’
‘2 bad, maybe later.’
‘Maybe’.
You got ready to go see your mother for your usual Sunday afternoon visit and it went by like any other. When she asked you what you’d been up to, you didn’t mention the gaming, she was never a fan of it. When you got back home, Jensen was messaging you again. You didn’t open the notification and settled in to catch up on some streaming before another week of work.
Monday hit you like a train and you were glad you hadn’t spent the night mining again. If you had, you doubted you’d even be able to open your eyes. You got to the daycare centre and welcomed in the kids. You got them set up for the morning snack then cleaned up as Sandy took them over to the reading circle.
You wiped the tables and then did some painting before you went out for some play time in the yard. As you watched several of the children on the swings, you glanced around. There was a man across the street. You squinted through the chain link as he seemed to be watching but assured yourself it was nothing as he quickly headed for the corner and disappeared.
Inside, the kids were due for quiet time, some napped and those who didn’t, stared at the ceiling and yawned. You could have joined them but knew that wouldn’t be acceptable. The end of the day came and you helped the kids pack up their paintings and their sweaters. You waited in the yard with them as the parents showed up and handed them off one by one.
You waved to Danika as she clung to her mother and your eye was once more drawn beyond the chain link. The same faded grey jacket, the same glasses, and the hat with the frayed brim. It was a better look at the man. Was he looking at you? Why on earth was he hanging around outside a daycare?
“Sandy,” you turned and lowered your voice as she neared, “see that man?”
She peeked over and shrugged, “which one? The guy crossing the street?”
You looked up again and like before, he was walking away casually as if he hadn’t just been staring through the fence. You shook your head and huffed. “Sorry, never mind.”
“Ah, don’t worry about it,” she waved her fingers, “come on, let’s clean up.”
With the kids all sorted out, you went back in and tidied up the last of their mess. You and Sandy were friendly but like with any, you weren’t very talkative. You never really knew what to say but you were never unkind.
You pulled on your jacket and checked your purse for your phone and wallet. You checked the time and turned off the lights. You bid Sandy goodbye as she headed for her SUV and you took your usual route down the sidewalk towards your bus stop.
You stopped short as the man was there. You were paranoid, he must just be waiting for the same route. You approached and he turned to watch you as you sat on the bench. He smiled and the dread sank deep in your chest.
His rectangular glasses gave light to his blue eyes and a goatee trimmed his jaw. He was tall and well-built, you could tell even under his comic book tee. He was going to talk to you, another weirdo in the city.
“Hey,” his voice was chillingly familiar, “how was your day?”
You stared at him and blinked cluelessly. You looked around, it was only the two of you. You opened your mouth but you had to be wrong. He said your name and you winced.
“Jensen?” you breathed as you stood and squeezed the strap of your bag, “why? How--?”
“You weren’t answering me, I was worried,” he said, “just making sure you’re okay.”
“What the-- I don’t understand how--” He stepped closer and you backed up against the bench. “Don’t, I’ll scream.”
“Scream? Why? I’m just-- You know me, it’s me, Jensen.”
“You doxxed me?” you snapped, “what the hell?”
“No, I didn’t-- I’m just checking on you--”
“I don’t know you,” you said as your heart began to race, “so please, leave me alone,” you edged away from him, “and don’t message me again.”
You sprinted across the street and as you came up on the curb, you looked back at him. He watched you but didn’t follow. You could tell from there he wasn’t happy but the brim of his cap shadowed most of his face so you couldn’t guess if it was hurt or anger. You quickly spun away and continued down the next street to the nearest stop.
You couldn’t believe he’d just shown up like that. You couldn’t believe he would think that was okay. You couldn’t believe he’d think that much about you.
🎮
You blocked Jensen on Discord and left his world on Minecraft. That night you were shaky and nervous, afraid that he would show up at your apartment. Did he know where you lived? He must if he could figure out where you worked.
You didn’t open Steam that night. You paced your small apartment, jumping at every noise. Sleep didn’t come easily but in shallow spurts that left you even more tired. You watched over your shoulder as you walked to your stop and boarded with one eye on the door.
Work was little better as you found yourself distracted in the room full of toddlers. Sandy asked if you were okay as you kneaded play-do violently. You shook yourself out of your paranoia and assured her you were only short on sleep, not a complete lie.
You took out your phone when you stepped out for a small break. Your mom had called but you would have to get back to her when you had two hours to waste. There was another notification, that one from Discord, a friend request from JJ-NoRematch. It wasn’t hard to guess who it was and you declined it right away.
There were several others from Jensen, too. He followed your Insta, blocked; he followed your mostly empty twitter, blocked; and he even commented on your LinkedIn like a weird. You closed your phone and took a breath before you headed back into the kids, their voices rising in their excitement to go outside.
In the yard, you had another look around, expecting to see him there on the other side of the fence. You were slightly relieved when he wasn’t but still on edge. You joined a game of tag then watched several of the kids line up for the slide. You lost yourself in your job as you told yourself he must have gotten the hint, at least not to bother you irl.
Just like the day before, and every day, you left work and headed for your stop. He wasn’t there either and you sat down and phoned your mom, hanging up as the bus pulled up with a promise to call her again when you were home. At home, you felt almost normal again and checked your notifications; no more follows, no more requests, nothing.
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday passed in a similar fashion. Each saw your anxieties less than the day before. You even resolved to open Steam and start a new world for yourself. You spent hours mining and almost fell asleep in your chair. When you nearly tipped over, you decided it was time for bed.
You slept better than you had all week and woke up before noon. You wanted to log right back on but you had life to deal with; groceries, cleaning, and of course, making that call to your mother you’d delayed the night before. After all that, you felt accomplished and you decided to treat yourself to take out, a rare divulgence.
You called the local Chinese eatery and waited eagerly for your feast as you turned on a new episode of your current binge. You played on your phone until the battery was low and had enough juice to buzz up the delivery man. You dug for your wallet as you went to the door and unlocked it without looking up.
“How much--” you asked as you opened the door.
Your eyes met a familiar pair, two blue gems behind a pair of narrow glasses. Jensen wore the same cap and held the paper bag of take-out with a smile. You grabbed the door and tried to swing it shut but he was too quick as he slapped a large hand against the peeling paint.
“It’s on me,” he said, “I love spare ribs.”
“What the--” you gasped as you pushed on the door helplessly, “please go away.”
“You’re not answering me,” he said as he stepped closer and forced you back as his body brushed against yours, “you blocked me and I can’t even get a hey, Jensen, how are you?”
“I don’t want you here,” you tried to shove him and he shouldered you away easily, “get out!”
He slammed the door and you flinched. He put the bag down on the corner table and reached back to twist the lock without a look. His eyes roved around your entryway and further into your apartment. He smiled as they stilled and focused on you.
“This place is cute… like you,” he said and you heard a slight hesitation in his voice.
You swallowed and backed away from him. You spun on your heel and ran for your couch. You reached over the back to your phone and unlocked it as the battery icon flashed. You had just enough juice to make the call. You dialed as you turned back to him.
“I’m calling the police so you b-better l-leave,” you warned as your voice and hands shook, “I me--”
He was quick and before you could pull away, he swiped your cell out of your hand. He scoffed and tossed it across the room. It hit the wall and landed screen down on the hardwood. You bit down and pressed yourself to the couch. You stared at him and kicked yourself forward as you tried to slip past him. He caught you and wrestled you back into the front room.
“Why are you doing this?” he asked calmly as you struggled in his grasp, “I’ve been nothing but nice to you.”
“N-no, you’re-- you-- let me go,” you stammered as he angled you around the couch. He pushed you down so you bounced on the cushion. You tried to push yourself up and he pointed his finger in your face and wagged it.
“No, you stay,” he growled and wiped his other hand on his jeans. He was nervous, even if he was angry.
“Please, why-- what do you want?” you grasped the cushion and hovered at the edge of the couch.
He sighed and sat in the chair. He took his hat off and set it on the table as he ran his fingers through his short hair.
“Good question,” he said as his jaw squared and his eyes turned to pinpoints, “better one, why did you block me?”
“Are you serious? You-- you--” you struggled to get your words out, your voice even more splintered by your fear, “you doxxed me, you came to-- to my work-- and…”
“I thought we were getting along. I thought you liked me,” he said with a frown, “I really did, you sure acted like it and-- I only wanted to make sure you were safe.”
“But why wouldn’t I be? I--” you shivered and crossed your arms as you withered beneath his gaze, “Jensen, this was only supposed to be online.”
He scoffed and stomped his boot on the floor. He shook his head as he looked to the ceiling and his anger bulged along his temple. He tilted his head and looked at you again.
“You know, for years, I have been a nice guy, I am a nice guy,” he pushed his shoulders to his ears as he threw his hand out, “I’m so patient and caring and you girls, you don’t even give me a second look.”
“Jensen--”
“No, really, I mean look at you, you’re no supermodel and yet it’s the same thing, ‘let’s just be friends’,” he spat, “but I watch guys all the time treat women like shit and they don’t have any trouble at all, they got them hanging off of them and I’m a creep for giving them a compliment or opening the door--”
“I don’t… know you,” you eked out, “you have to understand--”
“I don’t understand,” he stood abruptly, “I’m done trying to understand.”
He pulled his jacket open and slid it down his arms. You watched him sling it over the chair and as he turned back to you, you stood. He caught your shoulders and held you in place. His strength was plain in his grip as he squeezed then slowly moved his hands to cradle your face.
“I just wanna be nice,” he said as he leaned in. You tried to pull away but he moved a hand around the back of your head and forced your lips against his. He poked his tongue inside your mouth roughly as you tried to shove him away. Finally, he parted, his hands still firmly around your head, “wasn’t that nice?”
“Please,” you begged as he ran his thumb over your bottom lip.
His eyes searched your face as you stared back at him in terror. He sighed and dropped his hands back to your shoulders. He pushed you down to the sofa harshly and backed away.
“Fine, I won’t be nice,” he snarled as he took his glasses off and folded them carefully. He put them on the table beside his cap and twined his fingers together, loudly cracking his knuckles.
You blinked at him as your eyes grew glossy. You brought your legs up under you and pressed yourself to the back of the couch. You grasped the upholstery and turned as you launched yourself over to the other side. You stumbled as you landed on your feet and ran for the door.
You were yanked back as he snaked his arms around you and took you off your feet. You kicked out and screamed but it was cut off by his palm as he kept one arm around your middle. You scratched at his hand as he dragged you back to the couch. He pushed you face down onto the cushions and planted his knee in the middle of your back, slipping his hand away as he put enough weight on you to keep your voice suffocated.
“Listen, I know I look like some IT nerd but I’m a lot more than that, now don’t make me hurt you,” he played with your hair as he smiled down at you, “you try that again and I will shut you up and if someone hears you, I can take care of them too.”
You sniffed as tears pricked in your eyes and nodded frantically as it felt as if he would snap your spine. He pushed off of you and you stayed as you were, paralysed with fear. He sat and unlaced his boots one at a time. He looked up as he set them neatly beside the foot of the chair and he bent to catch your eye.
“Well?” he pointed at you and traced the line of your body in the air, “let’s go.”
You stared at him dumbly and he stood to pull his tee over his head. His torso was sculpted perfectly and his chest trimmed with hair that trailed all the way down to his pants. He stepped forward and tugged at the back of your shirt.
“You want me to do it for you, baby?” he purred, “I can help you.”
You swatted him away and sat up. You bent your legs to your chest and hugged them. “Please, I’m scared, just leave me alone--”
His hand rested on his belt and exhaled again. His fingers moved swiftly to unloop the striped belt and unbutton his jeans. He pushed them down, nearly tripping as he stepped out of them. He stood in his boxers, tented with his impatient excitement, and gripped his hips.
“It’s okay, baby, I know you’re shy, I am too,” he neared and you winced as he grabbed your wrist. He tugged on your arm and you resisted until he bent your hand back painfully and you cried out. He tickled your jaw as he looked you in the eye and tutted, “it doesn’t have to be like this, alright?”
You went limp and let him pull your arms apart. Your legs slipped down and your feet dangled above the floor. He got to his knees and pushed between yours. He slowly rolled up the hem of your shirt and bent to kiss your stomach as he bared the flesh. You trembled as he forced your arms up and swooped the fabric over your head. It fluttered through the air and to the floor as he cupped your tits through your bright pink bra.
“Is this so bad?” he asked as he nuzzled your chest and pushed your tits up.
He glided the straps down your arm and slid your bra lower so that you popped out. He nibbled at your flesh and traced your nipples with his tongue. You sat rigid and let him explore your body, too terrified to move a muscle. He reached around you and struggled with the hooks, frustrated he snapped the clasps and the band came free.
He continued to play with your chest, his fingers crawling up and down your stomach and sides. There was a genuine curiosity to his touch and it sent a chill through you. His fingertips pressed to the top of your pants and he pulled at them as his lips travelled down to your hip.
He tugged on your pants and jerked your entire body. He tore them lower as he pushed you up and you lifted yourself to let him peel away the layer. He added them to the floor and toyed with the elastic of your panties. The little bow in the front drew his attention as he pushed your legs wider and ran his nose along the cotton.
He hummed and rubbed his fingers down your crotch, pushing the fabric to your folds as he teased you through them. You inhaled sharply at the tingle it inspired and he pressed firmer against you, flicking his fingers along your bud as he noticed how it made you squirm.
He gently pulled aside the cotton and you felt his hot breath against you. You pushed on his head before he could delve into you. “Please, don’t--”
“Shhhh,” he threw your hand away from his head and bent over you, “just relax.”
He dragged his tongue along your cunt and lingered around your clit. You clenched as it sent a thrill through you and he moved his lips against you, suckling at you bud as your breaths grew raspy. You pushed yourself against the back of the couch and dug your nails into the cushion.
He slid a finger along your cunt and circled your entrance. He rubbed up and down as he kept his tongue swirling over your clit and you swallowed back as gasp as he poked inside. He felt around and added another finger, stretching you as he carefully pushed them in and out of you in time with his mouth.
He lapped you up and you closed your eyes, desperate to resist the coil winding within you. Your legs tensed against the couch and you tilted your pelvis without thinking. He sped up, the noise of his mouth and your slickness filled the silence. You let out a puff and moaned as you slapped the couch. The waves rolled over your flesh and you came into his mouth with a pathetic mewl.
He stilled his fingers as he lazily teased you with his tongue. He pulled his fingers out and sat back, the heat between your legs cooling in his absence as he licked up your juices. He watched you as he sucked his fingers and stood. Your head lolled and you edged forward on the couch. You tried to stand but he caught you and flung you back.
“We’re not done, baby,” he winked at you as he grasped the top of his boxers, “go on, lay down.”
You murmured your refusal and once more tried to get up. You slipped onto the floor and shakily crawled away as he dropped his boxers to his ankle. He grabbed you before you could get around the side and lifted you easily. He turned you and shoved you down onto your back as he lifted a leg over you.
He straddled you and again his hands roved over your body. You smacked at his fingers weakly but he easily ignored you. He kept one hand moving along your curves as he stroked himself with the other. He groaned and shook as he stroked his dick. Your eyes followed his hand and you gulped, he was thick.
He moved his knees back and pushed them up beneath your thighs as he kept a hand planted on your chest. He ripped your panties down your legs and untangled them from your feet.
He held you down as he ran his tip along your cunt, wetting himself with your coerced arousal. You groaned and grabbed the arm of the couch above you. You tried to pull away from him.
He pushed against your entrance and you looked at him in shock. You couldn’t stop him. His eyes were set between your legs as he inhaled and slowly eased into you. He gasped as he got his tip inside you and his muscles tensed. He bit his lip as he dove further in and you gasped as he filled you inch by inch.
“Shitttt,” he moaned as he reached his limit and you whined at how full you were, “oh, baby.”
His hand slid from your chest and he gripped your hips as he pulled back and thrust. You exclaimed and he did it again, slowly as he watched himself impale you over and over. You curled your fingers against the couch arm and your feet arch as you pressed your thighs around him. He lifted your pelvis high as he angled his dick even deeper.
“You feel so good,” he rasped, “oh, baby, you’re so good. Ahh-hh-hh,” his voice fizzled as your walls clenched him and you closed your eyes as you felt the heat building.
He moved his hand along your thigh and stretched it over your pelvis, pushing his thumb to your clit as he kept his pace. He purred as you writhed helplessly against him and you panted through the rising ecstasy.
“Please, please, please…” you chanted, unsure if you were begging him to stop or for more.
He moaned as he sped up and you sucked your lip under your teeth as you neared your peak. You quivered as your orgasm crashed into you and you let out a strangled cry. He snarled and planted his hands beside your head as he leaned over you, his hot breath tickled your face as he pounded into you.
Your legs bent around him as his pelvis rubbed against you and the friction drove you to another climax. You held onto the arm of the couch as he fucked your harder and harder. He kissed you and nibbled at your lip as he groaned and hooked an arm under to hold you close.
“You’re gonna make me cum, baby,” he said against your cheek and you turned your head away from, “ah, here I--”
He spasmed and slammed into you. He took several long thrusts and stilled. He grunted and drew heavy breaths as he rested his weight over you. He grabbed your head and turned your head up as he pressed his forehead to yours. You kept your eyes closed as the flames slowly dwindled.
“Was that so bad?” he stroked your cheek and trailed his finger down to poke between your lips, “No, it’s what you wanted, isn’t it, baby?” he wiggled his hips and you hissed, “yeah, you want me.”

When Ijekiel and his family are finally able to return to Obelia and restore the reputation of their home, he receives an invitation to the palace. On Athanasia's recommendation, Claude agrees to take him on probation for a low-level position.
And as he follows the knight, he suddenly runs into a child running down the corridor. The girl did not understand the road abruptly crashed into his leg and fell to the floor. Ijekil could hardly understand when he noticed the knight's nervousness, knelt down, and stared at the floor.
Alpheus gently lifted the girl and set her on her feet, helping her to dust off her pretty dress.
"Thank you," she said softly, rubbing her bruised nose.
Ijekiel froze at the sound of the baby's voice, which vaguely resembled that of his first love, Athanasia.
When the girl looked up at him, he realized who was standing in front of him.
Her dark, straight hair was tied up in beautiful buns with satin ribbons. Her topaz eyes were framed by thick, dark lashes. The girl dressed in a beautiful pink dress, vaguely reminiscent of what Atanasia wore on her debut. And in her hands is a cute stuffed rabbit.
The daughter of Athanasia, his first love.
"Your Highness! Why are you alone? Did the servants dare to leave you completely alone?" the knight asked.
"Atte wanted to see grandfather. And Mira didn't allow it. So I decided to go myself”.
"But Y-Your Highness...”
Alpheus knelt in front of her.
"Your Highness, may I accompany You? I'm just on my way to see His Majesty”.
When Attheia raised her head and looked at the man, he noticed a few more features that she had inherited from her father - a mole under one eye and the frown that is inherent in constantly frowning because of the bright sun.
No, not even that. The princess was a copy of her father, the sorcerer of the dark tower.
He wonder how much this annoys the emperor about his granddaughter. Surely, he would have wanted the baby to be a copy of her mother, and not the man who stole his beloved daughter right under his nose.
Kiel could have hidden his emotions deep in his heart, as he had done for the past few years, but the feelings she had awakened in his heart with her curiosity and her big topaz eyes reminded him of her mother.
"I've never seen you here”.
"I'm sorry, I didn't introduce myself. My name is Ijekiel Alpheus, and from today I will serve you and your family, Princess”.
"Oh! I didn't introduce myself either!”
Attheia curtsied and smiled, pleased with herself.
"My name is Princess Attheia de Alger Obelia. I am the daughter of Princess Athanasia de Alger Obelia and the Great Wizard of the Dark Tower Lucas. I am the granddaughter of the great Emperor Claude de Alger Obelia.
Alpheus laughed softly at her self-confidence and the way she said it without hesitation. Not every child will be able to remember such a long performance. It seems that she inherited not only her appearance, but also the genius of her parents.
"Hey! it's not good to laugh at princesses!" Attheia said irritably.
"I beg your pardon, Your Highness, but your spontaneity has struck me to the heart.
"Humph!" she snorted. "Atte wants to see Grandpa!"
"All right, then, let's go, Your Highness."
Perhaps he could not protect what was dear to him, and he was weak. Perhaps if he had been more persistent, more arrogant, and more stubborn, things would have been different. But alas, time passed, as his beautiful bird of happiness got out of the golden cage, having built a nest.
But her little bird, having just broken its shell and fledged, is unlikely to be able to settle on its own in such a harsh and terrible world of gossip and lies? She also needed someone like him to be her ears and eyes.
Ijekiel would like to be a loyal dog to guard the fragile nest where this chick is hiding.

Heartbreak and a New Tattoo - w. nylander
AN: Uhhhhhhhh. Definitely didn’t intend on posting a fic tonight but, cranked this out. It started off as meaning to be fluffy and cute but uh, my angsty cold heart said no? I’m trying to be better about writing shorter stuff, so let me know what you think! I’m gonna tag @broadstbroskis and @jasondickinsonss since they’re my resident willy pals.
Word Count: 2653
Warnings: Angst, happy ending though.
No one warned you that you would lose a piece of yourself when you fell in love. They didn’t caution you about how for every good moment, the ones that make your head spin and your heart race, there would be a chip of your own sense of person falling away. They didn’t tell you that after four years with someone, you slip into their habits, nestling tightly into their life. So much so that you aren’t even sure what direction you’re facing, because everything around you was built by him. It wasn’t that William did anything wrong. In fact, he did everything a partner should. His life was logistically a chaotic nightmare, each step felt like he was balancing on a rope, trying to get to the other side. But he was good at it, he always prioritized you, even when it was hard. The only problem was that he didn’t know the very rope he was stuck on was fraying.
It had started small, the cracks between you. The calls during road trips became shorter, less engaged. By the time either of you realized what was happening, it was just two people who once aligned into one breathing on a deadline out of obligation because it felt like that was what you were supposed to do. By the time you realized that the person you thought you were, wasn’t anyone recognizable without William by your side, you irresponsibly thought that it was time to let go. So, you let go of the visions of marriage and a family, of the house you dreamed of building together once things settled down, of the thoughts of the holidays spent together, each one more special than the last. You let it all go, taking a seam ripper to the last bits of thread connecting your souls. You couldn’t decide what hurt worse, the demise of what you thought was forever, or the fact that William didn’t put up a fight as you packed your things and left.
William didn’t know what hit him when you muttered that you were leaving. He was so sure it had to be a mistake, that there had to be some piece of information missing that would fix everything. He felt his chest caving in, the weight of you packing your bags codifying a new language into his head, one that didn’t include you. He spent weeks circling through the last few months before you ended it. Writing down and analyzing every fight, every night spent without talking to each other when he was gone, trying to piece together what moment made you leave. What he could have done to save the very thing that was destined to fall apart no matter how much super glue he tried to stick to it. You needed to find yourself again, and no matter how badly he longed to help you, he needed to let you go.
When William came back into Toronto in September, he was incessantly telling himself that he was doing better, that the fresh season would throw him back into a familiar enough routine that he could finally adjust to life without you. But familiarity breeds nostalgia, and nostalgia controlled the heartbreak he had spent the last few months trying to let go of. It wasn’t until he was back in the apartment that you shared that the resentment stage of his grief had tucked into his heart.
The resentment was the worst part of the breakup. Because he didn’t want to resent anything about you. He had gotten four years to love you as best as he could, and he didn’t want to replace all of the memories of love with a feeling of regret. He didn’t regret loving you, even if it ended the way that it had. He didn’t regret thinking he was going to marry you, and when he finally moved on from the resentment stage of grief, he realized that sometimes you can put your all into someone and they simply might not be able to give you all of it back. He was slowly starting to thread the foundation of a new rope, he was starting to move on. But when he saw you standing there in your dark blue dress, your hair a bit shorter than the last time he had seen you, talking to Steph, he dropped the newly constructed rope off the ledge.
You on the other hand were spending your summer trying to piece together the remaining fragments of your own being, the person who you were before you met William. You were doing okay, as okay as someone could be when they had just ended a four-year relationship with the person that they assumed would be the one. You spent months lying to yourself about being okay. You spent months trying to convince yourself that you didn’t make a mistake, that you didn’t leave because you couldn’t handle being honest with him about how you were feeling.
It was October and you knew he was back in the city. Hockey had started which meant that his presence was now one you actively had to avoid. You took the long way into the city and back home most days, actively avoiding the arena, knowing that being there would be too much. This half-hearted way of living in the city you called home was manageable, until December when you finally had the courage to unpack the remaining boxes from the home you shared together.
You were going through a notebook when it fell out, Mitch and Steph’s wedding invitation from over a year ago now. You picked up the card, eyes welling with the tears you had shoved down for the last six months as you remembered that weekend. The weekend you realized Will was your person.
“I can’t believe you and Mitch are finally getting married.” You hummed to Steph as you slid off your heels and collapsed onto the hotel bed. You had always admired Mitch and Steph, their relationship was one that was the definition of two people who fit together seamlessly, and made the choice to make it work between them. It wasn’t a fairytale or a whirlwind, it was real and raw and you couldn’t be happier as you laid in that hotel bed, dress and makeup still on, half-drunk from the overpriced cocktails that the boys kept flowing after they crashed the bachelorette party, that two of your closest friends were getting married in just two days.
“God, I know. Is it weird I’m not nervous about it at all?” Steph called from around the corner. You stood up, your feet slightly throbbing from being in heels all night and your mind feeling a bit fuzzy from the drinks as you rounded the corner and saw her taking off her makeup in the mirror.
“No, you and Mitch are just right, ya know? It works.” You looked at her hand, eyes shifting to the diamond sitting perfectly on her ring finger, sparkly and bright and perfect for her. You grabbed your phone from the counter where you had left it earlier in the evening, not wanting to bring it out with you while you and the girls celebrated with Steph. You looked at the home screen, a small notification catching your eye as you unlocked the phone and hit play on the voicemail. Steph grabbed the phone from your hand, a knowing smile on her face as she turned the volume on the speaker up, William’s voice filling the small hallway before you had the chance to stop it.
“Hey baby, you’re probably back in the room by now. I just wanted to say that you looked amazing tonight, and I know we can’t be together tonight because of the traditions and all that, but I love you and will be thinking of you.”
Steph handed you the phone back, a stupid smirk evident on her face that you were pretending to ignore. You went back toward your suitcase, sliding the dress off of your body and throwing on one of Willy’s old sweatshirts and a pair of shorts. You sat on the bed, fingers hovering over your phone as you thought of a message to type back to your boyfriend, a smile lingering on your cheeks from his message.
“You know what he said to me the night he met you? Granted, he was shitfaced, but I still think it’s relevant.” Steph smirked as she came around the corner, crawling onto the other side of the bed and turning to face you. You rolled your eyes at her and set your phone down, ignoring her slightly as she started speaking again,
“He told me ‘I’m gonna marry her one day Stephanie, just wait.’”
You let yourself cry over that memory, and for the first time since the breakup, you realized that you were worse off without him, that you had ended something entirely too good for reasons you didn’t understand. You picked up the phone to call more times than you could count, only to set it back down again, torturing yourself with the idea that you had made your decision, and you needed to lay with it.
You were in such a daze when he walked up to you, nerves settling into your stomach at the sight of him. He didn’t look like your Willy anymore, he looked like a hollow version of the man you still were hopelessly in love with, the one that you ultimately played the biggest hand in breaking. You followed him without a word when he asked you if you could talk because the truth was that you would follow William anywhere if it meant that maybe you could get a piece of him back.
It was awkward for a few moments, both of you riddled with nerves, wondering who was going to dare to break first and say what they were truly thinking about. It was agonizing, being so close to him for the first time in such a long time, and it only made your own doubts about leaving him to come back to your chest in full force. William grabbed your hand quickly, threading his fingers through yours before finally speaking, being the first one to crack the eggshells that you were both walking on.
“Do you sleep well without me? Because I don’t. I don’t think I’ve slept since June when you left.” He said, head hanging down as if the words he was speaking were in some way shameful. Your heart wanted to break for him because you had been in the same situation for so long, nights feeling long and empty without him there. But part of you was almost feeling some weird sense of satisfaction at knowing he was hurting just as badly as you. You weren’t surprised he dove right in, head first. It was what he always did. He had known you for so long, there wasn’t a point in dancing around saying he missed you now that he had the chance to tell you so, he had already been doing enough to push it away on his own. He didn’t want to keep pushing something that he was starting to realize wasn’t meant to go away.
“No, willy. I haven’t slept well since we broke up.” You shook your head, opting to tell the truth because up until this point, lying to pretend you were fine had only left you empty, with a broken heart that you didn’t know how to heal.
“I stayed up until 6 am just because at least then if I called you might be awake. I felt like I was watching myself just get worse and worse, and all I wanted was you. I’m not supposed to want you anymore, William.”
“I would have answered, I would always answer.”
“It’s not the same, you know it’s not.” William sighed softly at your words as he let them run in tedious circles through his head. He had spent the better part of the last six months missing you and replaying the events from the summer wondering if you were both wrong for what had happened. Your love story had been like a journey by train, exciting when you’re young and tiring when you get older. It was great until one of you, who could even remember who at this point, had gotten off during a stop and the other one continued on the journey alone and by the time you both reached the final destination, the two different trips couldn’t merge into one anymore. But the problem was that maybe the final destination was all wrong, maybe you were supposed to get off the train because now you could come back together and start a different trip together, one that isn’t tiring when you’re older.
He looked over at you quickly and let his eyes linger on the features of your face, the ones he used to have memorized hidden by the obvious toll the breakup had taken on you, too. He couldn’t help but think about how if he were to take one look in a mirror that he had been avoiding for the past six months, he probably wouldn’t recognize himself either.
“I tried to call you,” he started, voice tentative and unsure as you turned to look at him. Your eyes were blurry, and your mind nearly blacked out at the five words he just spoke. Five words that maybe could change everything, or perhaps they would have if you had seen the call in the first place. You tilted your head softly as William ran his hand through his hair.
“But, your voicemail was full.” You looked away from him, the pain in your chest creeping back in as you took in his second set of five words. Your voicemail, the one that had been filled with messages from him, from times where you were happy, and from drunken nights after the breakup where he sometimes would call and all you would hear on the other end was silence.
“I couldn’t bring myself to delete them, I just wanted a place where I would be able to hear your voice and have it be just for me,” you smiled sadly, letting the tears blur your vision as you stood up. You didn’t know what to do, this all felt suffocating and overwhelming and yet definitive at the same time. This was it, you were either getting William back, or you were letting him go forever. The choice should have been a simple one and yet it was almost more complicated than the initial choice to breakup had been because at least when you did that, you both thought it was what you wanted. Now you were presented with either putting your heart out in the open, tossing it carefully to the person you had known for so long and putting your trust in him to catch it, or you were running the risk of him dropping it and leaving you crumbled on the floor as you tried to pick up the remnants of whatever would be left after a fumble that big.
“I spent Christmas without you, please don’t make me spend New Years without you, too.”
“I don’t want to spend any day without you again.” You whispered, resting your hand on his cheek. William smiled at you and pulled you close into his chest. He tilted your head up and connected his lips to yours, something that you both had spent the last six months missing. You settled into him, feeling your fears melt with each moment that passed. The breakup had left heartache in both of you, but it was necessary to put your real love into permanent ink on both of your chests. A new start, one without heartbreak and with a new tattoo.

New Beginnings
A/N: hi, just dropping in to say I’m writing again >:D enjoy this slow burn. Also, surprise, it’s not a lizard man story though I do have one in the works so there is that.
~*~*~*~
Torren swung the ax down, splitting the log in two. Sweat beaded his brow as the sun bore down on him. He stuck the ax down in the wood stump and stood, wiping away the sweat with the back of his hand as he looked up at the sky. Just past noon, he’d have to get a move on if he was going to be on time for the kings summon. If he even wanted to take the job, whatever it was. If King Richard the second wished to hire a mercenary, it surely couldn’t be for anything fun. He clearly didn’t want to waste his own men for this, which meant that Torren was likely going to die during his job.
And yet… the money he would get if he lived. He could retire, and finally live his dream of being the towns hermit to its fullest potential. As in, he only ever comes into town on stormy nights to buy ten kegs of ale and disappear for another three months. He grew his own food, hunted his own meat. Of course he kept messing up his tomato plants which meant he had to go into town to get those, but once he can figure it out then mission Hermit was a go.
Stepping back, he grabbed the shirt he had draped over a nearby branch and walked towards his home. It was a nice little shack, one he’d built from scratch back when he was just a young boy. He had found the location by accident really, one minute he was being chased by his elder brothers, the next he was standing in a clearing with a pond and no one in sight for miles. At first it was just a cool hideout, somewhere he could go to get away from his crazy family and village bullies. But over the years he spent more and more time here, fixing it up and expanding the facilities. Next thing he knew he had completely moved in and claimed the land officially as his.
Tossing the shirt on the couch, he walked into his bedroom and opened his dresser. He wasn’t sure what he’d need really, if this was a quick trip, and he hoped it was, he’d only really need two shirts, pants and his washing supplies. He already had his armor on, his swords were already by the door, polished and ready to go. He grabbed the shirts, extra pants, and his bag of supplies and stuffed them into a bag that he could tack onto his horses saddle. He’d grab a small coin purse for food and drink, which should cover him for his trip if he was careful. If he ran out of coin he’d only have to offer to chop wood for inns or something like that.
As he turned to leave, bag in hand, he stopped by the kitchen and grabbed the oat bag for Sweetie. Most of the time she was content to just chew on grass, or even break into gardens and devour everything in sight. But oats, how she loved oats.
The sun glared at him as he exited the house, he stopped briefly to lock it up before continuing down the path to the pasture. He could already see the giant grazing peacefully, black tail flicking away bugs as her dappled gray coat shone silver in the sunlight. She was truly a magnificent horse, holding a presence without even trying. She was a draft horse, one of the few capable of holding a full grown orc. And she was an absolute sweetie, hence, her name.
“Got something for you, Sweetie,” Torren called as he entered the stall part of the pasture, grinning as her large head shot up, ears pointed forward and nostrils flaring. She smelled the oats like sharks smell blood in the water. With a graceful trot, she soon stood in front of him, towering over him by two feet. She bent down and nuzzled his cheek lovingly, snorting into his ear as he tried to shove her away. “We don’t have time to cuddle, girl. The King wants us at the castle by midday tomorrow.”
Sweetie snorted and stood upright again, flank twitching as she moved past him and into the tacking area. She was smart, smarter than most horses he’d met. She waited patiently as he began to saddle her, taking his time to secure the bag and oats in a place where she couldn’t get to it. She was tricksy, especially when it came to oats. But she also knew that those were a night time snack, something that he wouldn’t just give out unless they narrowly avoided death and allowed her to have something to chew on while he fought off a panic attack.
He slid the reins over her head, patting her cheek as she opened her mouth to allow the rod to go in. Once she was fully outfitted, he lead her out of the stalls and closed the doors behind her. He swung up onto her back, and settled in. Gathering the reins, he clicked his tongue and set off down the dirt path that lead into town. The castle wasn’t too far, if he traveled nonstop today he’d be able to make it before midday tomorrow. Talk to the king, get the job done, and they’d be home before they knew it.
~*~*~*~
Reaching the castle, Torren almost turned back around. He’d heard the rumors, how King Richard the second seemed to… overcompensate. The walls around the kingdom were large, but not as large as the damn castle. It towered over everything, almost as if it was a direct challenge to the gods. It was also very, very ugly with its pale brown coloring and lack of windows.
Showing his summons slip to the guards at the gate, he slowly made his way into the kingdom. It was another thing that irked him about King Richard, he was a man with “purist” beliefs. No race other than human was allowed past the walls without a proper invite. There was no trading, or apprenticeship allowed between humans and others. Which raised another red flag about this job offer, why would a king who hates his kind specifically ask him to complete a task for him.
Torren tightened his fist on the reins as he watched the crowd wearily. He was going to die, either here or on this job if he wasn’t careful enough. The townsfolk weren’t bad, they looked more open to him than the guards did, but he didn’t dare interact with them. Not even to the young children who waved at him for the guards were watching him just as closely as he was watching them.
Reaching the palace, he climbed off of Sweetie’s back and handed the reins over to the stable boy, a warning look in his eyes. If they mistreated her, he would rip all of their spines from their backs and beat them to death with it. Torren turned to look at the guards that approached him, back stiff as he towered over them. It was almost laughable, how they escorted him into the palace.
The inside of the castle was just as ugly as the outside, the same beige walls, no decorations whatsoever. Whoever helped the king design this deserved to be publicly executed. Knights stood at every corner, some seemed to be standing at random places the further they got in. It was almost as if someone had just told them to pick a window and stand. The guards increased as they drew closer to the throne room, all of them standing at attention as they stopped in the middle. The guards beside him stood at attention, hands over heart and back straight.
One of the guards announced the arrival of the king, everyone else following in salute. Torren looked up in expectation for the infamous King Richard the Second. Looking, looking, out of confusion, his gaze drew down to the floor when an irritated cough sounded.
Oh, oh gods…
Torren had to physically bite his tongue as he took in the sight of King Richard the second. No wonder the castle was so large and hideous, this man barely stood past a humans waist. He recalled an old nickname for the king, one that was immediately outlawed in the towns surrounding his kingdom. Little Dick Jr, the bane of all of Pufort.
Torren knelt in front of the tiny king before any more offense could be given. And he had a lot to give at this moment in time. “Your grace,” he said stiffly.
“Rise,” came the nasally response. “Do you know why I've called you here, orc?” Dick Jr asked once Torren towered over him again.
“No, m'lord.”
“I am a king without a queen, I'm basically a laughing stock in all the kingdoms!” Torren was willing to put money on it, that wasn't the reason why, but he knew better than to say that. “But there's a princess, locked away in a tower due east. And she will be my bride.”
“And you wish me to retrieve her?” Torren asked for clarification. That didn't sound so hard at all.
“Yes, it's a week’s journey all together, the roads are treacherous, but I'm sure you're no stranger to that,” again, nothing dangerous. “And then of course there's the active volcano and lava surrounding the castle and the dragon guarding it.” Ah, there it is.
“I see, that doesn't sound too difficult for me,” Torren said, lying through his teeth. He could handle bandits, he could even sneak past a fucking dragon. But lava? An active volcano? That was something he'd never experienced before and wasn't too keen on the idea.
“Perfect, we will discuss your payment when you get back. Godspeed, I wish to be married by the end of the month!” Little Dick Jr clapped his hands twice, alerting the guards that he was done talking to the half orc.
Torren bowed his head and turned to make his leave. If he walked fast enough, he could get out of this city by the time the king reached the stairs. The guards had attempted to follow him out, but after they had to literally run to keep up they quit. It wasn't like he was going to do anything anyways.
He eyed the gods awful bust of Dick jr. and contemplated tripping into it…
No, no. Not yet.
~*~*~*~
If there were small miracles, Torren may have found one. Sweetie was in perfect condition when he had retrieved her, granted she had been touched by the stable hands and she made sure to voice her displeasure by biting his shirt and nearly throwing him into a mud pile. Sweetie was a sweetheart up until she had the wrath of the gods placed upon her.
They had made their way out of the kingdom as fast as they could, and Torren was grateful that the guards didn’t give him an official escort out of the kingdom. Though, he had noticed several guards watching him carefully if he lingered too long in an area. Sure, there was traffic, but he was an orc, that was an unforgivable crime don’t you know? He half expected to get harassed when he passed by the front gate guards, but he was uncomfortably surprised to find that they did not.
Oh, he was going to die on this mission. He should have gotten his affairs in order, who was going to take after Sweetie when he was gone? His brothers were half a kingdom away and his neighbors didn’t know he existed. Now, he was realizing as he traversed the hills, it was a bad time to be a hermit. Sweetie was smart though, maybe she’d find a new hermit to adopt and go about her life.
Okay, maybe he should focus on traveling and not his soon to be untimely demise.
Torren had just crested the hill overlooking the neighboring village when a shout came from his right. Looking over, he was wary to see an elf making his way over on his own sturdy steed. The elf seemed friendly enough, though most elves he met rarely stayed friendly. He paused and waited for the elf to approach, keeping a hand on his dagger just in case.
The elf wasn’t bad looking, kind of handsome really if Torren was being honest with himself. Tall, a bit taller than most of the elves he met, golden skin that would make King Midas jealous. Long brown hair braided back in practicality rather than aesthetic, though it was a tad too ornate for pure practicality. He was dressed in simple leathers, with elven embroidery up around the shoulders, partially obscured by the cloak he wore.
“Hail, friend! I see you came from Pufort, a fine accomplishment for those of us considered too “unpure”,” the elf gave a laugh as he settled beside Sweetie. “Gavril, merc for hire,” he introduced himself as he put his hand out.
“Torren,” Torren said as he took the hand and shook it once. A mutual respect was given to the elf, some mercs stuck together, especially those around Pufort. The land wasn’t known for tolerance, mostly the guards fault, and so it wasn’t common to see many mercs who weren’t human. “What brings you to Pufort?”
“Ah, but the king, of course!” Gavril gave the man a bright smile before his smile dropped. “Better to talk here than in the village. Less ears.”
Torren felt his heart drop at the comment, dear gods was this the end? He hadn’t even made it out of Pufort yet! Gods, the amount of fun his brothers would have when they find out that he died in Pufort of all places…
“I can see you’re freaking out, fear not, I am not going to say “long live Dickie”,” Gavril let out a laugh, and Torren didn’t appreciate it, like, at all. “He hired me a month back, and when I disappeared he chose to hire you.”
“And I should believe you, why?” Torren actually did believe him, it was just the dick move that Dickie would pull. But he was a distrustful man by nature, and so grilling the elf it was.
“Why would I lie? Being here in of itself is a death sentence for me if one of his guards spots me,” Gavril shrugged. “No, I felt as if the job was far too… strange for me to complete without the full story.”
“And that story was?” Torren raised a brow as he shifted on Sweetie, who snorted in warning as she grazed.
“The princess, she’s apparently the daughter of the neighboring kingdom, Aster. I did my research and went to them with the information on Richard. They don’t like the idea of an unsavory man such as him “rescuing” their daughter in such an unhonorable way,” Gavril leaned a bit as his voice dropped. “I was riding by, coming back from another business that I had to attend, when I happened to have heard he had another summons, I thought it was only fair to let you know about it all.”
“And what, exactly, are you hoping to inform me of other than the princesses misfortunes?” Torren leaned slightly in despite himself.
“I’m to meet another fellow, a minotaur by the name of Jardor. He was the princess's guard before she was imprisoned so she’d be more trusting of us. Her parents hired me to take her Aster instead of Pufort, and their offer is extended to any other mercenary hired by Richard.”
“And this is legitimate? How do you know they won’t cast you off to Richards' wrath once they have their daughter?”
Gavril nodded as he sat upright. “A fair question, I, myself, found myself doubting it. However, I asked around their former employers and found that they were actually credible. I understand that you have no reason to believe me, but if you are curious you are more than welcome to come with me to meet up with Jardor.”
“And where is he?” Surely a minotaur would be noticeable around a place like Pufort.
“He was smart enough not to come to the welcoming land of Pufort,” Gavril said with a grin. “He’s in Halder’s Rest in the neighboring village, Stonewall, I believe.”
“And you just happened to be riding by Pufort and saw me?” Torren raised a brow as he leaned back.
Gavril let out a soft laugh. “Fair enough, I might have been lingering around to see what the little man’s reaction would have been.”
“How? You couldn’t have been allowed in the city.”
“It’s actually fairly easy to sneak in if you find the really dumb guards,” Gavril said with a smirk. “If you talk fast and use big words to explain away things, they simply just let you in.”
Torren shook his head, “very well. I’ll come with you to this Jardor, but I make no promises that I will join you.”
“Of course,” Gavril gave a bow to his head. “Now, what do you think are the odds that these kind folk will allow us to rest in their undoubtedly comfortable inn?”
“‘Us’?” Torren looked at the elf with furrowed brows. Surely he didn’t think they were going to travel to Halder’s Rest together, did he?
“Yes, ‘us’,” Gavril said with a raised brow. “Surely you didn’t think I’d just abandon you to these unwashed masses, did you?”
“Yes?” Torren wasn’t sure who he pissed off up there, but he was fairly sure he didn’t deserve this kind of forced upon companionship here.
“Oh, my friend,” Gavril gave a sympathetic pout before clapping Torren on the shoulder. “You’re stuck with me.”
Gods help him.
~*~*~*~
Turns out, the good folk were not willing to rent out their plentiful rooms to two distinguished gentlemen like them. So, seeing as the guards started gathering around them once they exited, the duo had opted to camp out on the spacious planes outside of the village. Pro: it was a nice night out with the stars shining bright; con: there were wolves and they very much were eyeing them as a snack.
Luckily for them, the wolves found a rather unfortunate deer and left them alone for the rest of the night. After that, the sleeping got easier, though Torren still kept a hand on his dagger under his pillow. And if he noticed that Gavril did the same with his staff, well, he wasn’t going to be one to talk.
The morning was a tense affair, Gavril had cooked and while it smelt delicious Torren wasn’t one for accepting food from strangers. But his mother also raised a gentleman with manners so he ate anyway. And it pissed him off more that it was, indeed, delicious in all honesty.
They set off not long afterwards, mounting their steeds and making their way to Stonewall, a village that was a good two hours away. Both Sweetie and Torren did their best to ride ahead of Gavril and his steed, Farren, however the two seemed to be professionals Thorn in his Side, for they stayed right on his heels, humming a stupid little song.
Torren really pissed off some of the gods.
But, by the Grace of the gods, they finally made it to Halder's Rest with minimal spats. Or, "character building" in Gavril's mind. The vast difference between Aster's civilians and Pufort's was easily spotted. Where an inhuman was hard to see even just passing through in Pufort, it was hard to not see them in Aster. From vendors, to guards, to just a milk maiden lizard girl.
It felt… welcoming.
"Halder's Rest is just down the road,'' Gavril said as he led Farren though the bustling roads.
Torren let him take the reins, not sure if he should run or not. He had no idea really what sort of situation he was walking into. One kingdom was going to be pissed off, that was for sure. Either Pufort or Aster, and he wasn’t sure which one was better. Aster wasn’t known for its military, sure it had it, but no one had seen it in action in well over a hundred years. They preferred to stay diplomatic in negotiations, and somehow it’s worked so far. And yet, he feared what Aster would do if King Richard the Seconded got his grubby little hands on their daughter.
But another part feared what the King would do to him if he failed to deliver the princess. He wasn’t the first mercenary, and even Gavril admitted he was cheating death when he hung around Pufort waiting for Torren to leave. Pufort was well known for their military power. King Richard was always willing to fling a fleet at a neighboring kingdom, or hell, even his own people, if he felt there was even a hint of offense at him and his legitimacy of his rule.
He should run, Torren realized. Like now, right now-
“Hey, there he is!” Gavril said as he pointed at the minotaur guard that stood outside the inn with his arms crossed. “Jardor!”
Jardor looked up with irritation on his face. He was big, even for a minotaur and just as uniquely colored. Most minotaurs that Torren had come across were either brown or black with white colorations. But Jardor was a multi-colored minotaur, white based but he had russet, black, brown and gray mottled on the skin that was exposed through his armor. His horns were wide and angled high, making him more imposing.
“Stop calling attention to us,” the guard hissed as they drew closer. “You could jeopardize the mission.”
“Oh, please,” Gavril rolled his eyes. “There’s only milkmaids here, it’s not that dangerous.”
“The king could find out and send his fleet,” Torren hissed at the elf.
“Exactly,” Jardor snorted as he shifted his stance. “Our success depends heavily on stealth. Until we deliver the princess back to the capital of Aster, we are not out of the weeds yet.”
Gavril sighed heavily but nodded. “So, are we heading out or is there other business we need to attend to first here?”
“We’ll head out, most of the pleasantries can be exchanged on the road,” Jardor said as he led them to the guards stables and pulled his draft horse out of the stall. As he mounted, Torren surveyed the town. It was a nice place to be, he supposed. But he still preferred his privacy.
“I don’t believe we met,” Jardor said to him as they set out. “I’m the Princesses’ guard, Jardor Stoneskin. And you?”
“Torren Azorrn,” Torren said finally. “Just got hired from the King-”
“-and poached from me once he left,” Gavril interjected with a cheerful grin.
“Yes,” Torren agreed with a heavy sighed.
Jardor snorted and shook his head. “Of course,” he sighed. “I apologize for him, he was supposed to go home and then make his way back here. Though I am glad he did make the detour, I doubt I would have survived the trip with just the two of us.”
Torren found himself smiling as Gavril let out a gasp of mock hurt. “It is nice to have a more level headed company,” he agreed as Gavril mumbled to himself as the two men snickered.
“I will have you two know, I am pleasant company!” Gavril said as he steered his horse next to Sweetie.
“Of course, my friend,” Jardor said evenly with a placating smile. “Of course.”
“Why did you have to return home, anyways?” Torren asked with a raised brow at the elf. He had only mentioned business arrangements, but going home was an entirely different thing “Was that the other business you mentioned earlier?”
“It was,” Gavril said defensively. “I have people at home who were waiting on me, had to let them know I’d be back for good later than anticipated.”
Torren nodded and left it at that, he wasn’t going to judge people for their personal affairs, he knew that if he was still in contact with his own brothers he’d be doing the same. They lapsed into a silence after that, save for the occasional direction change from Jardor the other two were content with just following him. Finally, Torren found himself speaking up. “Jardor, if you’re the princesses’ guard, then why aren’t you with her?”
“Ah, there are two princesses in Aster, the one who is heir to the throne and the second in line should anything happen to the eldest sibling,” Jardor said. “The princess I served was the second in line, though she loathed the whole thing,” he added with a soft smile. “When she was...cursed, I was ordered to stay behind and help protect her sister.”
“So she’s cursed?” Gavril asked with a frown. “You didn’t mention that.”
Jardor shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “I, yes, she’s cursed,” he said stiffly. “The sooner she comes home, I’m sure she’ll be closer to breaking that curse.”
“Isn’t true love usually the factor in those curses?” Gavril asked with a furrowed brow as Torren studied the minotaur.
“Yes, but that is not the case here,” Jardor said with such confidence neither mercenary knew what to do with that.
“So what is this curse?” Torren asked. “Why was she moved to such a remote location, surrounded by lava and a dragon?”
“It was considered necessary by the Throne, it was not my place to question it,” Jardor said stiffly.
“So you did disagree,” Gavril noted. “Which means it likely isn’t a curse, and that makes me so much more intrigued, don’t you feel the same, Torren?”
Torren didn’t comment. But he did note that the minotaur was clearly hiding something, and that made him all the more wary of this job. He should have just stayed home.
“Must you grate on my nerves, elf-boy?” Jardor snapped as he looked at the elven mercenary.
“Ah, elf-boy is actually my younger brother, a cute lad but not nearly as annoying as me, elf-man,” Gavril said with a grin, but it dropped quickly in the wake of a grim expression on his face. “Look, we can deal with a dragon, and even the lava. But if she’s cursed, we need to know exactly what we’re walking into.”
“Nothing dangerous,” Jardor promised, and the two men relaxed just a bit at that. The situation was weird, but Jardor radiated a trusting aura that it was hard to suspect they were walking into a trap. At least for Gavril, Torren always assumed there would be a trap involved when he traveled with others. “Just let me take the lead when we get to the tower, a familiar face will help her.”
“How long has she been locked away?” Torren asked finally.
“Seven years,” Jardor said with a weary look in his eyes, and deeper down, pain. “It’s high time for her to come home.” He nudged his horse, kicking her into a faster gait as they made their way out of Aster and into the wildlands. “That said, we’re a three day journey away from the tower, it’s in a remote part of the country that few travel by. We shouldn’t face any resistance before the volcano.”
“Well then, let’s get ourselves a princess,” Gavril said with a smirk at Torren as he sent Farren barreling after Jardor.
Torren sighed heavily and patted Sweetie’s neck, “let’s get this over with,” he said to her as he nudged her side gently, a gentle permission to run with the other horses, a permission that she gladly took as she galloped next to their two companions. In just three days, he’ll be fighting off a dragon surrounded by molten lava just to rescue a princess. That was the only certain thing he knew about this mission, if there was a curse, if they could get her to Aster before the King found out, if he still was getting paid.
Gods, was he still getting paid?
~*~*~*~
[eye of the tiger blasting]
Jardor kept the lead, forging ahead when Gavril decided that bickering with Torren was a Lovely Idea. Both men, both adult men, were constantly five seconds away from getting into a slapping fight that escalated when Gavril, a four year old apparently trapped in a twenty eight year old's body, claimed that Torren had hit him.
Jardor just let it happen when Torren really did hit him.
Setting up camp was a horrid affair, all three of them were skilled in camping, but those skills had varying degrees. Jardor could put up an excellent tent, but the sleeping cot kept getting tangled and eventually he just laid out on the mess with a stoic resolve. Torren was an expert in putting out his sleeping cot, but his tent kept falling out on one side and eventually he just moved Sweetie over to help keep it propped up with the promises of getting her an extra big bag of oats. And Gavril would put his tent up, but in the process of laying out his sleeping cot the tent would fall. When he’d try to put the cot up first, the tent would fall and he’d have to find his way back out again. And so, in a moment where his remaining two brain cells bumped together, he tied his tent up to the branches of the tree keeping it up and elevated while Torren glared at him from the inside of his lopsided tent that was beginning to smell of horse.
The morning didn’t help anything either.
Torren, used to years of cooking and traveling by himself, had woken up early and made himself, and only himself, a nice breakfast. The other two, woken by the pleasant smell of bacon and the heavenly sizzle of fresh eggs being cooked, came out of their tents with growling stomachs and crushing disappointment when they spotted Torren eating it all by himself. Jardor was disappointed, Gavril was dismayed. The two had to fend for themselves, Jardor splitting a piece of jerky with the elf as they glared subtly in Jardor’s case, and blatantly in Gavril’s.
When they finally set back out again, it was in lesser spirits than the day before. They were less than a day away, according to the smell of sulfur that got increasingly heavier as they traveled on. Gavril could see why no one had rescued the princess prior till now, the lands around the volcano were barren, the roads treacherous by hungry wolves. It was dangerous even for the three of them, he couldn’t imagine a merchant or a lone adventurer braving this land.
Well, maybe Torren.
But everyone else would be fucked.
Jardor let out a soft laugh up ahead and slowed to a stop at the crest of the hill. He glanced back at the two catching up, a light shining in his eyes as he grinned at them. “We’re here,” he announced as the tower, tall and magnificent, loomed below. It wasn’t exactly just a remote tower, Gavril could make out some crumbling structures of a once beautiful palace. He wondered, hoped really, that it was still stable and safe for the princess, surely her parent’s wouldn’t have dumped her into this hell hole if it was unstable. He paused, actually, he’s met some gods awful parent’s. It was a high possibility. But that was neither here nor there, the tower was still far enough away, but they would arrive there within the hour if they paced themselves. They still couldn’t spot the dragon, and none of them were willing to go head on against a fucking dragon.
Torren opened his mouth to speak, to ask what the plan was in case the dragon reared its head. But before he could utter a single word, a horn sounded from behind them. The three turned on their steeds to watch as a troop of soldiers made their way towards the tower, banners flying high, and armor glittering in the sunlight.
Pufort.
"Fuck," Gavril said with pursed lips.
Fuck was right.
~*~*~*~
Princess Amirah was absolutely, and positively bored. She had nothing else to paint, unless Harold suddenly changed their mind about her painting his scales. She’s run dramatically through the hallways a dozen times this morning, and really she wasn’t feeling it for a thirteenth time. All the books have been read, a countless amount of times. At this point she could quote the books and she did, constantly, to Harold as they cleaned their teeth from their meal each night. Harold never spoke as to whether or not they enjoyed it, but she assumed they would have put an end to it by now if they didn’t.
She sighed heavily as she paced her room, paint brush in hand as she tried to figure out a new canvas. There was still some room on the window sill, maybe even the dresser if she painted small enough. She paused by the open window, the smell of sulfur no longer bothered her as she breathed it in. She barely remembered the smell of fresh, clean air. Or the sound of bustling streets, the maids coming in with sweet hushed words, her mothers hugs…
Amirah shook her head and smacked her cheek chastisingly with her paint brush. No, no thoughts like that, she’s survived seven years without those things, she can survive many more. In all honesty, she probably could leave. It wasn’t like anyone was going to come looking for her of all the princesses in this unholy tower. They were more likely to go for the skinny blonde overlooking the ocean than her. Which was fine, she was the second born princess of Aster, her sister was always considered the prettiest, the fairest, the princess that all should aspire to be.
Amirah made it her mission to defy that expectation. She hated the princess duties that her mother and sister had forced her to attend. She hated the expectations that were expected of her as the second in line to the throne. To marry a neighboring kingdom, to secure an alliance between the two. To have their heirs and continue the bloodline. It all made her squeamish honestly. In a perfect life, she wouldn’t mind marrying and settling down on her own terms with someone that she truly loved. But she didn’t have the perfect life, she had her mothers expectations and her sister's legacy.
She was honestly safer in the tower than back home.
A strange sound filled the air, and a frown pulled at her lips as she looked off outside. She adjusted her glasses as another horn sounded, a horn of all things. Why would a horn be here, who was blowing the damned thing. They were going to wake Harold up!
Leaning out the window, Amirah let out a gasp as banners crested over the hill. Banners that belonged to Pufort, the kingdom ruled by King Richard. In the distance, she spotted three men charging ahead of the group, and hope glittered in her heart as she spied familiar horns. Was Jardor really here? She didn't know who the other men were, or what she assumed were male honestly she knew some beefy female knights, oh gods was Clarissa here? That would truly make her day.
Before she could speculate, however, a loud roar filled the air and shook the ground. Clinging to the wall, Amirah looked up in slight fear. She knew that roar, and what it meant. A challenge, anyone who wanted her, had to go through them.
May the Divines bless their poor souls.

(1) Lesson: A cup of water is not yours until you drink it. Likewise, knowledge.
All scholars of Ohara memorise via the method of loci, and Nico Robin, at eight years old, is no exception. Her favourite is a temple hewn from stone, a wise king's magna opus as reconstructed from academic blueprints. There, she stores the lessons she learns: a kind elderly lady still calls for the marines in the night after she's fed you; a knife in the hands of a frightened child can still slit a soldier's throat; a powerful man is still not quite immune to the intrigue of a beautiful woman.
She drinks deeply from the cup of knowledge and suffering, and two pillars form in the forefront of the temple. The first is who she has always been—the pursuit of good things, knowledge for knowledge's sake, building up, preserving, and leaving a legacy for all humanity. The other is who she discovered she was when the world government placed a bounty on her head—an immovable strength, manifesting in guile, bloodshed, and conquest.
Her surprise is only at how readily she accepts these as her foundation—the twin load-bearing columns of the woman she now is.

"Read it," demands Crocodile. Then he raises a hand to call her to pause and adds, almost smugly, "Out loud."
He thinks he's clever. Robin smiles. He's not stupid, but Robin is really, really clever.
She hadn't intended deception when she'd first sought out the most comprehensive history of Alabasta. (Three archaic hand-scribed manuscripts and a yellowed but hardly-used guide. It was technically restricted access, though that hardly mattered in the face of Robin's devil fruit.) She had merely wanted to know—the first pillar of Nico Robin.
She recites this knowledge from memory, trailing her fingers along the runes of the poneglyph before her, retrieving the words verbatim as she walks through the temple rooms in her mind. She fully expects Crocodile to interrupt her, to point to one word or the other and demand its meaning. She already has the textbook explanation on why translation is an imperfect art on the tip of her tongue. She doesn't get that far.
He's never been a patient man, especially when it comes to failure.
.
(3) Quote: Death never takes a wise man by surprise; he is always ready to go.
He deals her a mortal wound and leaves her to bleed out in the collapsing tomb of this country's kings. The age-old stone crumbles and groans, weary and slow to return to dust. She closes her eyes and waits.
It's surprisingly peaceful.
.
.
(4) Comment: As implied ibid, "life is full of surprises". (5) Fallacy: Appeal to pity.
Straw Hat Luffy saves her and she demands 'why' but receives no answer. As she dusts herself off, she decides a fitting consequence for his unwelcome charity. She invites herself to his crew.
A strange group—they actually accept her, welcome her into their lives and their home despite being enemies three days before.
Over time, she learns that if she drops into a light doze below deck beside Nami, the next morning will come with warmth, the smell of breakfast wafting in from the adjoining kitchen, and that strange, unconditional acceptance.
.
(6) Study: Repeated exposure to similar situations without negative stimuli result in dissociation of situation and stimuli.
.
. . . and she is . . . happy?
.
(7) Supra (4).
.
===/\===
.
(8) Truism: Nothing lasts forever. (9) Quote: Only a fool can be happy.
The government finds her, as they have many times before. This time, however, she can't bring herself to offer these people as sacrifice in her place. She tries desperately to think of an alternative to the offer laid before.
She becomes the illusion of stillness, there is no stillness in her. Her mind is structure and movement all at once—the earth in revolution beneath the temple's foundation stone. Her mind moves as the celestial bodies, a million miles a minute, yet imperceptible. She is perfectly grounded as the centrifugal force tears her apart.
A lifetime ago, she was taught to smile when she wants to cry, so she smiles now. A mind built by the wisest men in history and it yields no solutions, so what use is it? What use is she? She's only good for secrets, sabotage, and smiles like sweet poison.
Even the greatest temple cannot stand forever.
.
(10) Quote: The only way to have a friend is to be one. Nb. This implies friends are worth having. Comment: The author agrees. (11) Quote: There is nothing worth living for, unless it is worth dying for. (12) (Non-)issue: Hobson's choice. (13) Principle: Occam's razor.
.
She takes the offer.
.
===/\===
.
(14) Policy: No man left behind.
The friends she tried to save came for her. They stand in proud defiance of the authorities that have wronged her all her life, figures of would-be legend backlit by the sun, their shadows stark and black, bridging the deep chasm she stands on the other side of, alone.
It borders on the absurd. They shouldn't have, it makes no logical sense. And yet, there they stand.
.
(15) Quote: When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.
She fails to understand and finds that for once, she does not need to know. Equally illogical hope wells up in her. (The temple is shored up, its glory to be restored. Not yet, but in the future promised.)
"Say you wanna live," shouts Luffy, and he waits for her answer, as if he has all the time in the world. As if time itself will yield to his force of will.
It almost does. The mad rush of adrenaline blocks all noise except the rush of blood in her veins, her captain's voice ringing in her ears. She has the split-second to wonder if all great turning points in history are like this, destiny at the mercy of a momentous decision, all the world in bated breath.
She doesn't stop to wonder if she dares. The second pillar of her identity commands her to be bold.
.
(16) Proverb: Fortune favours the bold.
"I want to live," she cries across the divide—
.
—and—
.
(17) Supra (4).
.
.
—she is saved.

===/ENDNOTES\===
At the risk of these notes being longer than the actual fic (I got too hyped by the thought of pseudo-academic formatting and used way too many probably-obscure references), here's helpful notes so you don't have to ask google:
the method of loci— (loci being Latin for "places")— is a strategy of memory enhancement which uses visualisations of familiar spatial environments in order to enhance the recall of information. The method of loci is also known as the memory journey, memory palace, or mind palace technique.
magna opus— Latin for "great work", especially the greatest achievement of an artist or writer.
aphorism— an observation which contains a general truth/ a concise statement of a scientific principle, typically by a classical author.
ibid— a citation signal to refer to a single work cited in the note immediately preceding. The abbreviation of ibidem, being Latin for "in the same place".
supra— a citation signal used to refer to an earlier-cited authority. Supra is Latin for "above".
truism— a statement that is obviously true and says nothing new or interesting.
nb— a citation signal to draw the reader's attention to a certain aspect or detail of the subject being discussed. The abbreviation of nota bene, which is Latin for "note well".
Hobson's choice— A forced or false choice. It is believed that the phrase derives from Thomas Hobson (1545–1631) who ran a horse rental business in England. He rented out horses but insisted that customers took the horse nearest the stable door. The choice his customers were given was "this or none"; making it effectively Hobson's choice of horse. — (source)
Occam's razor— Occam's razor (or Ockham's razor) is a principle from philosophy that the simplest solution is usually the best one.

Face Reality (Part 14)
Title: Forgiveness is Not so Easy (the void will protect those shunned)
Summary: Phil and Techno are at the house. Ranboo isn't sure he likes it, but he's got his family to support him.
(Death is mad at Phil. He doesn't know it. Once she's done with something, she'll chew him out.)
Part One
Part 15
Masterlist
_________
Ranboo wished he was stronger. He wished he could put the past behind him and move on, but something held him back. Something looked him in the eyes and told him that he could not grow without closure, but even closure was too much to bear.
When he had looked over to the door and saw not only Technoblade but also Philza, leaning and eyes glassy, his first feeling was terror. It was an act- they had come here to kill him-
But his second thought was maybe they were here to kill Tommy. Or Sam. Or any of the family that had actually cared about him when he was at his lowest. Maybe Tubbo, Fundy, Purpled, maybe they wanted a way to Puffy. Because they hadn’t ever cared about him, so why would they now? Why would they have hunted him down? No, the world and the ones he used to live with both united in that they had left him behind, so it wasn’t Ranboo who was in trouble, it was his family.
When Sam had ushered Technoblade and Philza into the medical room, Ranboo let out a deep breath. “C’mon guys. Let’s go to our room.”
Tommy had taken one look at his wide eyes and agreed, as if he hadn’t just seen his father bleeding out over the man who’d once told him to die like a hero. “Yeah, let’s give them some space.”
They all ended up asleep, though he was sure that someone had gotten up, but Ranboo’s dreams were not kind. Had they ever been? Had he ever known compassion from something as simple as his own mind?
His dreams were plagued with heartache and pain, as his life had been, and though he was no stranger to it, he did not want it. He never wanted it, but no one ever cared about his opinions before he found this family.
Ranboo woke up gasping. He had already forgotten what the nightmares were about, but the adrenaline still pumped through his veins as he tried to calm down.
“You got ‘em, too?” Tommy whispered, from somewhere among the mass of blankets.
Ranboo swallowed. “Yeah.” His voice sounded hoarse. At least he hadn’t been crying. Had he? “Just memories. I think.”
Tommy shifted in the covers. “I know that you don’t like them. I have issues too, but… is it so much to hope that they feel sorry? I just want.. I know it’s selfish but I want them back. I have this family, but losing them… losing them still hurts.”
“I can understand that.” Ranboo said. “I think it all depends on what they do now, since we’re close together and can’t really avoid each other. It depends on how they act.”
Tommy hummed. “I hope they feel sorry.”
“If they don’t feel sorry now, after all they’ve done,” Ranboo whispered, “then they never will.”
“Yeah.” Tommy said, but he didn’t elaborate. They stayed in silence until weak beams of light began to shine through their window, and then even longer, until there was a soft knocking on the door.
It opened, and Sam stood there. “Ranboo? Tommy? Are you awake?”
“We sure are, big man.” Tommy said, and though his eyes were tired, his wings twitched. “What do you need?”
Sam hesitated. “Uh, Phil’s awake. He and Techno want to talk with you guys. You don’t have to, of course…”
Tommy’s wings drooped a little. “I guess. Will you be there?”
“If you want me to.” Sam said softly. “Or if you need space, I’ll just be outside the door.”
Ranboo thought about all that had happened. “You might… you might want to be further than that. If they want to apologise, and they mention what they’ve done… I’m not sure they’d get out of here alive.”
Sam huffed. “I’m well aware that they haven’t been great people, but if they want to apologise, then I’ll let them. You deserve to hear their apology.”
“Thanks, dad.” Tommy smiled lightly. “Do they want to talk now?”
“Whenever you’re ready,” Sam nodded, but Ranboo knew that he couldn’t keep them waiting. Not when Technoblade already had a short temper.
Ranboo clambered over the slumbering bodies of his family to get to the door. “Where’s Purpled? And Punz?”
“They chatted with Phil about what they were. I left a while ago, but Punz came up to me and said they wanted to talk to you guys. Purpled’s trying to sleep on the couch now.”
Ranboo wondered what their hybrid parts were, but he knew he’d find out eventually. “Alright.”
On the way to the medical room, they did pass Purpled on the couch, wings draped awkwardly over the edges. It didn’t look comfortable, and he grunted in acknowledgement as they went by. They got to the door to the room, and Sam put a hand on their shoulders.
“If you need something, anything, let me know, okay?”
Ranboo nodded, and Tommy opened the door.
Phil and Techno were on one of the beds, looking like they didn’t belong there. Ranboo thought for a moment that they really didn’t, they’d distanced themselves from family and in doing so they had forever condemned the possibility that they could fit. It was what they deserved, but Ranboo felt sorry.
“Hey Tommy, Ranboo,” Phil said slowly. “How, uh, how’ve you been?”
Tommy scoffed as he went to sit down on a bed. “Been doing alright, considering all of my trauma.”
Ranboo cracked a smile, but it fell when Techno started talking.
“Can’t have been too bad if you’re friends with Tubbo again, given that he exiled you.”
Tommy’s eyes were set alight. “Tubbo was never part of the problem. Dream was.”
“How?” Techno asked, and Ranboo thought he almost seemed genuine. “From my point of view Dream doesn’t have anything to do with what happened. Help me understand, Tommy.”
Ranboo spoke instead. “Dream’s manipulative. He didn’t like that Tommy stood up to him, so he needed Tommy gone. But gone would get rid of the fun of this server- so exilling him and getting him submissive was the best option. Setting George’s house on fire was never as bad as he made it seem, Dream just needed a reason to exile him. That’s why he never cared that I was part of it, too.”
Phil looked surprised. “You were part of it?”
“Yeah. My first day, and I was committing arson.” He scoffed. “Not that you care.”
“We can get to that later,” Techno said. “What happened in exile, Tommy? Why were you under my house?”
Tommy’s wings fell until they settled on the bed. “Dream’s manipulative. What more do you need? What haven’t you figured out, considering that you’re able to analyze everything I do?”
“I need to hear it from you,” Techno said. “Because otherwise, I can’t be sure.”
Tommy sighed. “It started out alright, other than the fact that he blew up all my stuff and made me start from scratch. Then he did it every day, he told me to put my armor in a hole, and if I didn’t, he threatened to put me in it. He said he was my friend, he said Tubbo hated me, and ghostbur disappeared. I made a party, and Dream sent out the invites, but no one came. Only Dream, and then I started believing that he was my friend.”
“But what made you run away?” Phil asked.
“I’m getting there.” Tommy snapped. “He kept getting into my mind, making me believe that I had no one but him. I really thought he cared about me, despite all that he did to me.”
“What’d he do?” Phil interrupted again.
Tommy hesitated, so Ranboo spoke up instead. “Abused him. Why do you think he flinches? Or did you not care enough to find out?”
“I said we’d speak about that later,” Techno growled. “One thing at a time.”
Tommy barged back into the conversation. “I think it would have continued, but Dream found the room where I kept all the important things I didn’t want blown up. He blew up the entire room, then everything that I had built while in exile. He said that I deserved it, because I had disobeyed. I said sorry, but he said it wasn’t enough. He said that I needed to be punished, and I believed him, but I was so sick of it all, I was sick of exile, I was sick of life. So I took whatever building supplies remained from everything I’d worked so hard on, and I built into the sky. I didn’t reach as far as I’d wanted, but it would have been enough. I could almost touch the clouds. Then…” He trailed off.
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to.” Ranboo whispered, and Tommy just curled into his side.
“I’ll be fine. I was on that… the fucking pillar, looking down at the ground, when I realized what Dream had been doing. I’d almost let him win. I couldn’t let him win, so even though I knew my eyes were grey and I woke up every night submerged in the water, I jumped. I landed in a little lake, and ran. I ran to the snow, because I knew it would cover any footprints I made. I found your house, and I meant to just take some supplies, but it was so warm, and some part of me still hoped you’d care about me. So I burrowed under your house and tried to sleep.”
Techno made a small sound. “And you grew your wings?”
“Yeah,” Tommy sighed. “It was hell.”
“I’ll bet.” Phil huffed. “Why didn’t you have Techno call me?”
“Because I thought he wanted to put an axe through my skull.” Tommy snapped. “And I wasn’t exactly proven wrong, was I? What made you think it was a good idea to decimate my home?”
“I was angry.” Techno grumbled.
“That’s not a healthy way to take out your anger,” Ranboo argued. “And don’t you dare blame it on your voices. I know you could’ve ignored them. I know you have before.”
“They were a government,” Techo began, and Tommy groaned.
“He was sixteen!” Tommy exploded. “You expect a sixteen year old to run a country? He was stressed, and grieving, and you certainly didn’t help! The problem isn’t Tubbo, it’s that you expected him to be an adult when he never got to grow up. The problem isn’t a government, it’s that you wanted to be the most powerful thing on the server. You wanted an equal playing field, and for you, that means you control what everyone does. You weren’t some savior, you were just some overpowered guy with anger issues who wanted to destroy everything.”
Techno didn’t have a response. Ranboo figured there wasn’t really any way to respond to that.
“I guess,” Techno started after a tense silence, “you may have a point.”
Ranboo snorted, and Techno shot him a look that probably was supposed to be playful, but he couldn’t help but flinch.
Phil sighed. “And we heard what went down with Dream’s lair. Do you want to tell us about your, uh, your issues?”
Ranboo cracked a smile as Tommy draped a wing across his shoulder. “The main cause of my problems begins with D and ends in ream, pretty much. I heard his, well it wasn’t him, but it sounded like him, his voice, in my head, sometimes. Telling me I did things that I didn’t, or maybe I did. I can’t remember. It stopped when I went to the End, or sometime after. I don’t know why.”
“And why’d you go to the End?” Phil asked.
He breathed deeply. “I overheard you guys talking about your, your syndicate, or whatever you called it.”
“Oh.” Techno said, like he knew where this was going.
“I don’t even remember why I was there, but I heard Technoblade, who’s notorious for hating people using him as just a weapon, speaking about how he could send me to be their assassin to relieve them of the blame. How he could take advantage of my forgetfulness, and then I thought, surely Philza of all people would shoot that idea down, but I had to stand there and listen to Philza agree with Techno.”
Phil wouldn’t meet his eyes.
Ranboo kept going. “So I figured, this can’t get much worse, but then, and here’s the best part of it, I listened to Technoblade say that he hoped that I didn’t mistake our relationship for a personal one, because it was purely business. How was that supposed to make me feel?”
Techno wouldn’t meet his eyes either.
So, he kept going. “So I packed up my stuff, and I prepared to leave. But then, Phil noticed I was leaving. He didn’t bother to notice that I was being suspicious, almost as if he wanted me gone. The rest is history, the Enderman of the End don’t like me all that much.”
Tommy looked over at the people who used to be his family. “So? Your turn. Are you going to try to justify your actions?”
“No,” Phil said, and Ranboo noticed he almost seemed mortified. “No. Admittedly, we might have meant everything then, but after we tried to talk to Tommy last, we spoke about everything. We tried to figure out why you were angry at us, and we realized, well, we had this huge realization that, well, we’d fucked up.”
“You think?” Techno laughed. “We, amidst our thinking, might have noticed that we are, quite possibly,”
“Massive jerks?” Ranboo asked.
“A pair of bitches?” Tommy offered.
Phil and Techno both laughed a bit. Ranboo tried to not be scared.
After a while, Phil quieted. “I just… you guys are allowed to feel mad. You can be angry. But… I want you to know that we’re sorry. We’ve noticed that we’ve done wrong, we want to make it better, but it’s your choice. If you never want to see us again, we understand, but… we want a chance to fix our relationships.”
“From a business standpoint?” Ranboo asked, and Techno winced.
“I deserved that.” He admitted.
Tommy thought for a moment. “Well, as much as I would like to never have to see Techno’s ugly face or Phil’s old-ass one again, you seem at least half genuine. I guess I could give you a chance, but it’s not me that should be the deciding factor. Sure, you hurt me, but I’ve got a shit-ton of other things to get over before I even start to address it. Ranboo’s the man you should speak to about forgiveness.”
Ranboo didn’t like all the eyes on him, but he knew it was necessary. “I…” His voice cracked. “I don’t know. Me leaving led to a bunch of other trauma, and I… I just don’t know if,”
Phil smiled gently. “That’s okay. We can leave, or we can stay, or if you want to take it slow we can visit later…”
“No,” Ranboo shook his head. “You’re hurt. I’m not gonna kick you out. Just… I might not come see you for a while.”
“That’s okay,” Techno said. “Are you okay if I walk around?”
“If you take off your weapons.” Ranboo said, after a pause. “I can’t really expect you to stay cooped up here.”
“I’d do it if you asked me to.”
Ranboo tried not to immediately latch onto the fondness in Techno’s voice. He grew attached to people easily. He knew that. He’d just have to hug Sam or something after this.
“No, it’s fine.”
So that’s how Ranboo ended up in his room, alone. He still didn’t trust Techno, but he knew Tommy had missed them. He knew that Purpled and Punz needed their help. So, he’d tolerate it.
The door opened and he burrowed out from under the blankets just enough to see who was intruding on his brooding.
“Awww,” Tubbo cooed. “I know you’re probably sad but you look really cute in your little blanket cocoon.”
Ranboo rolled his eyes, but he couldn’t help but feel a little happier. “Whatever you say, Tubbo Underscore.”
“Can I get you anything?” Tubbo asked, softer. “I know this is rough for you.”
“What about you?” Ranboo asked. “Doesn’t the festival still scare you?”
Tubbo shrugged. “I dunno. I have nightmares about it sometimes, but it’s in the past. We’re even, too. I didn’t kill him, though.”
“It doesn’t change that he still did that to you,” Ranboo argued as Tubbo sat down. “How do you forgive him?”
“I don’t want to live with the feeling that not forgiving someone brings,” Tubbo admitted. “It might be a weak reason, but I want to move on. I don’t want to think badly of anyone. I will, if I need to, but Techno is trying to be better, I think. I don’t really know, he’s a hard person to read, but I tend to give people as many chances as they want, so I dunno.”
Ranboo grinned. “That’s a lot of ‘I don’t know’s Tubbo.”
Tubbo scoffed. “And you’re here listening, so…”
Tubbo stayed a little longer, until dinner.
Dinner was a tense affair. There were a lot of failed jokes, a lot of winces, a lot of silence. They were healing though, slowly. Ranboo knew it’d be a while, but he knew that Tommy had talked with them while he had hidden, so maybe they’d be okay. They talked about moving closer, since living in the arctic was a little unnecessary, and Ranboo was conflicted on it. He faked nonchalance, but he doubted anyone other than Phil and Techno believed him.
He doesn’t sleep that night.
He expected to just stay up, but around what he predicted was… midnight, Purpled turned over and groaned.
“Are you going to fall asleep or should we just watch a movie?”
Ranboo froze. “What?”
“Oh.” Purpled realized. “You weren’t there when I told everyone. I’m part Phantom.”
“I’m gonna act like I know what a Phantom is.” Ranboo chucked, feeling how the exhaustion was creeping over his body.
Purpled laughed. “True. Want me to tell you, or do you think that you’ll be up for a long time and wanna do something else?”
“Just talk.” Ranboo said. “I’m pretty tired.”
“I’d bet,” Purpled responded, and crawled over to where Ranboo huddled. “So, a phantom is an undead creature, which is kinda concerning, but that’s why I look like I need some rest. It can fly, and in worlds where they aren’t banned, they show up when someone hasn’t slept in three days, which is why I have characteristics that center around sleep. They don’t like daylight, which is why Punz gets a headache from sunlight, I guess. Uhh…”
Ranboo leaned his head on Purpled’s shoulder and sighed. “Continue.”
“I will. Oh, my eyes glow. I don’t know why, but it might be because there’s something to do with invisibility potions don’t work on their eyes? I don’t know, I wasn’t really listening when Phil talked about it. They’re apparently the fastest mob, so that’s why Punz is fast, uh, what else… you getting sleepy there?”
Ranboo hummed.
Purpled went on. “Oh, elytras are made of phantom membrane. Since you can only get elytras from the End, I guess that’s why I found the portal.”
Almost asleep, Ranboo frowned. “Don’t go to the End. It’s not nice.”
“Not nice?”
“No. The creatures don’t like me, but the void does, I think.”
Purpled frowned too. “The void?”
“Yeah. The void talks to me. She calls herself Death, but I don’t believe it. She was mad at Phil.”
“Yeah?” Purpled asked, and it’s clear he doesn’t really believe Ranboo. “Death and you had a chat?”
“Mhmm. She said she had to stop. She was nice, though.”
“Don’t go chatting with death.” Purpled said softly, as Ranboo started to drift asleep. “I want you to stay alive, okay?”
Ranboo nodded, but he was asleep a few seconds later, leaving Purpled alone with his thoughts.
If he was part of an undead mob, and Death was a real being, hypothetically, would he be able to talk to her? Purpled ended up deciding it was a question for another day, because it wasn’t really his problem. Death would show herself eventually, if she was mad at Phil, poor guy.

QUARANTINE
Pairing: FFXV!NYX ULRIC x MALE!READER
Words: 2.140
Warnings: fluff
A/N: @slowkib - here you go :) I hope you like it. Thanks for this request
A/N II: This is a loosely sequel to MESSAGES. So, if you wanna know how these two have met, you can catch up on it but it's not necessary :)
Synopsis: Yn got hit by a virus what means he and Nyx have to be quarantined. But Nyx finds a way to 'sweeten' the time for YN to recover quickly.
Nyx and YN were dating for a few months and so, YN’s sister was determined to meet the man who had stolen her brother’s heart like a thief with the promise to never give it back. She stayed over the weekend. Two whole days, all three had a lot of fun together. YN was happy to see how good Nyx and his sister got along and all too fast, the time was over again and YN’s sister had to go back home.
While Nyx cleaned up a few plates and glasses, he looked at YN who had a content smile on his lips even if he seemed to be a bit pale, “Your sister is nice. I like her.”
“I'm happy to hear that because she already loves you. She threatened me to treat you right or else she would ... Well… trust me, I wouldn't have a good life anymore.”, YN said and coughed softly.
Nyx blinked several times, staring at YN, disbelieving that his boyfriend, a skilled fighter and great soldier of the royal Kingsglaive, would be intimidated by his sister who was two heads shorter than he was, "You... She can threaten you? I mean, for real?", Nyx asked amused.
"Always had, always will. She might be younger and smaller than me but she can be a beast if she wants.", YN answered with a grin, remembering what kind of troublemaker she had been in their childhood.
"Good to know.", Nyx said grinning.
"Don't you dare to-", but YN stopped as a coughing attack prevented him from speaking further.
Concerned, Nyx laid his hand on YN’s shoulder, checking on him as he became even paler, "Are you alright?"
YN just waved with his hand, "Yeah, yeah", he said hoarsely, slapping against his chest, "I just choked on something.", he whispered.
But the next day, YN laid in bed, coughing violently and fighting with the full aftermath of the virus that held Insomnia in its iron grip for a few months. Obviously, without knowing it, YN's sister had been infected and now, he was the one with all the symptoms: fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, sore throat and nausea saying, the whole package.
While caring as best as he could for a suffering YN, Nyx did what the citizens were encouraged to do: he called a doctor, YN got tested and the result was clear: positive.
Nyx was tested negative but still, because they lived together, they had to be both quarantined for two weeks. As the next step, Nyx had to inform their Captain. Drautos wasn't pleased about the information that two of his men were out of service because of some ‘common cold’. As the Captain asked why they had to be both in quarantine, Nyx saw himself forced to tell the truth and revealed the relationship he had with YN. But, somehow, Nyx got the impression that the relationship itself wasn't the biggest problem rather the fact that the Captain had been completely unaware about it during the last months.
But because the Captain still wanted to have the upper hand like always, he sent Nyx and YN a big pile of documents and paperwork that got postponed because of the last battles. Nyx wasn't pleased about the boring 'office' work but as long as he and YN were quarantined, there was no way Nyx could say anything against it … or run away from it to fight a small, cozy fight against some demons which he would prefer more in this moment.
Luckily, YN recovered quickly and so, after one week, he was almost the old one. Almost. He was still a bit tired, was coughing and needed to rest but at least, he was fit enough to help Nyx a little bit with the paperwork. Especially, YN did it to prevent a raging war inside their apartment. While YN had been forced to stay in bed, he already had heard Nyx cursing while working.
First YN thought Nyx was just annoyed about the work itself but then, one afternoon as they sat together to work through the piles of documents, YN realized that Nyx wasn't just 'annoyed' rather, he was frustrated and even kinda aggressive.
"This stupid thing!", Nyx called out while pressing keys randomly on his PC.
YN raised his glance questioningly from his own PC and papers to look at the hero, who obviously got defeated by a bunch of wires and circuit pressed into a plastic case, "Everything's good over there?" he asked, grinning as Nyx slammed his whole hand on all keys he could find at the same time.
"Sure! Fuc- it works pretty wonderful!", he hissed through gritted teeth. Once again, Nyx pressed a bunch of keys he had no idea of their functions. As the PC finally just gave up and shutted down, Nyx leant back in his chair, pinching the bridge of his nose with closed eyes while sighing deeply, completely defeated.
YN tried his hardest to keep the grin out of his face but it wasn't working. Nyx heard the muffled sound of suppressed laughter and the moment he looked slowly up, his beloved boyfriend burst out with laughter. Even tears of joy were running down his cheeks.
Nyx gritted his teeth, "Good to see that you’re feeling better again. At least one of us has fun here.", he said annoyedly, standing up from the chair to look out of the window to become calmer again. It was cold, raining and all in all not the worst weather to be forced to stay inside.
YN felt guilty for laughing. He hurried over to Nyx and from behind, he snaked his arms around Nyx' waist, pressing a soft kiss on the outer rim of Nyx' ear, one of his weak spots, "Come on. Don't be like that. I didn't mean to laugh at you. It was just ... you fight against demons and whatsoever and then, you get defeated by a PC? Seriously?", YN chuckled.
Nyx scoffed, "I tell you, this thing has a will on its own. And it's mocking me. Besides, we're Glaives. We fight. We don't do 'paperwork'.", he said, quoting the Captain's words in a silly voice.
"So, what? You wanna disobey and ignore the Captain's order? Again?", YN asked amused, knowing how rebellious Nyx could be from time to time.
Nyx grinned, turning around in YN's arms and lying his own around his neck, glad that YN already had some color back in his face, "What shall he do? We're in quarantine. We're not allowed to leave this place or to invite someone in ... at all.", he said with a low voice.
YN raised an eyebrow, knowing this kind of mischievous glance already from the hero, "You have something in mind then?"
"Oh, yes. Indeed, I have.", Nyx nodded with a grin.
Ten minutes later, Nyx had collected everything he needed while YN just had watched him, sitting in an armchair. Nyx had prohibited him to do anything else than just waiting because even if YN felt better he was still stricken. On the other hand, Nyx wanted to have his idea as a small surprise. So, he collected all the pillows and blankets he could find and threw them into the living room which was quickly turned upside down. Nyx took some chairs, arranged them with the couch and had built something that represented a cozy fort. The couch was the fort's backrest. Chairs left and right were holding up the blankets while the carpet was covered with pillows and bed covers to make it even more comfy. As Nyx was done, he stepped next to YN, lying an arm around his shoulders, "What do you say?"
"That looks pretty perfect. You have done that before, don't you?", YN asked and looked up. There was already a melancholic smile on Nyx' lips.
"Yeah, I did this often with Selena. Mostly, when she was feeling sad or when she was sick. Then, I built one of these, stole some ice cream and cookies from the kitchen and then, we hid there the whole day. We were talking or watching TV until we fell asleep.", Nyx remembered, pulling YN closer to his side before he pressed a soft kiss on his boyfriend's crown while inhaling his scent to feed the painful memories with sweet new fuel to make them comfortable again.
YN enjoyed the affection with closed eyes, "So, you stole ice cream, huh?", he asked softly to light Nyx' mood up again. He was happy that it worked as he heard him chuckling.
"Well, stealing would mean no one knew about it. I'm sure our mother knew it. I mean, back then, as a kid, I felt pretty smart but now, I know that someone had to buy the things, so I'm sure she knew when we would build our little cave and prepared the sweets for us."
YN frowned. Everything was perfect except the fact that they had no sweets in the kitchen, "Shall we order-", but he got stopped as someone knocked at the door.
"Not necessary. I already took care of that, too.", Nyx said with a grin and went to the front door, opened it and came back with a paper bag full of stuff Crowe had brought after Nyx had texted her.
"What's that?", YN asked curiously, closing up on Nyx.
"Everything we need to get you back on track.", Nyx said grinning.
"But I'm already feeling better.", YN argued half-heartedly as he saw the colorful labels of the bag's contents.
"Yes, but 'better' is still not completely recovered. So, here, the ice cream will help you with your sore throat. Cookies are great in warm milk with honey to fight against the temperature of your fever. And the chocolate will just make you happy.", Nyx listed while pointing at the different items.
"And the gummi bears? Are they for my running nose?", YN asked chuckling, pulling out the bag of sweets.
Nyx snatched it out of YN's hand, "Oh, these are for me. At last, I need something to throw at you when you say stupid things again. Gummi bears for a running nose... never heard such a silly thing.", Nyx mumbled while rolling with his eyes and bringing the bag in the kitchen.
YN laughed, took his laptop and crawled into the pillow fort to get comfortable already while waiting for Nyx to come back.
Ten minutes later, Nyx appeared with a tablet which was laden with bowls full of ice cream, sweets and two mugs with warm milk. YN received the tablet, placing it in the middle. Nyx crawled next to YN's side before he closed the door made out of a blanket to enclose them with coziness. Pressing on a switch, a chain of light went on which was installed around the chair and illuminated the fort in a soft warm, romantically light. Nyx leant against the couch with his back, raised his arm to give YN the space to cuddle against him, using Nyx' upper body as a pillow.
YN was just about to start the movie he had picked out on Netflix as Nyx got a call on the headset he had still in his ear out of habit. Cursing under his breath, he answered the call, "Yeah? Hey, Captain. Yes, we're still in quarantine. One more week, that’s correct, Sir. Yes, he's feeling better but he's still not recovered completely. He still has to rest.", Nyx answered the Captain's questions. To underline Nyx' statement, YN coughed slightly.
Nyx had difficulties to keep the amusement out of his voice and nudged YN's side in revenge because the coughing was so badly acted, "What did you say, Sir? Oh, yeah, the paperwork. We're working on it. Yes, at this very moment, we're sitting in the living room and looking at the screen. Yes, Sir. Alright. Good da- huh, he hung up already.", Nyx said with a smirk, taking the headset out of his ear to lay it aside where he wouldn't notice it at all for the rest of the day.
"You lied to the Captain.", YN stated with a smirk.
Nyx looked him in the eyes while shaking his head, "No, I said the truth. We're in the living room, looking at some screen. The paperwork can wait. First, I want to make sure that you're fit again.", he breathed before he kissed YN softly, "And now, we should hurry with the ice cream or we will have just soup left."
"You could put some gummi bears into it to keep the consistency- hey!", YN called out as a gummi bear hit his hand.
"I warned you.", Nyx said grinning before YN cuddled back against Nyx' side, the best place in the world to recover from whatever virus there might ever be.

✨Let me save you✨
Summary: Tom is your best friend and he’s currently in a relationship. His relationship was extremely toxic as she was possessive and controlling, but things escalate when you find out she’s abusive as well, mentally and physically.
⚠️⭕️WARNING: abuse is a topic in this story so if that is a trigger, please don’t read! Language and sexual content included.
‘ I’m on the way’ you texted to your best friend Tom Holland. Tom had invited you to dinner to celebrate the release of his most recent movie ‘ spider man- far from home’. You were extremely excited. Ever since he got into his relationship with Sarah freeman, you were seeing him less and less. He would always tell you ,
‘ Taylor made plans’ or ‘ Taylor doesn’t feel good’. His excuses to ditch you always involved Taylor. She didn’t want to share him even though you both had been friends way longer than their relationship. To say the least , you hated her. With a boiling passion. She was stuck up, spoiled and snobby. Anything she wanted, Tom had to jump up and get it or she would pitch a fit. You hated for him. You honestly didn’t understand why he stayed.
But for tonight, you were going to be as nice as you could to her so you didn’t jeopardize your chances of seeing him. You grinned as you looked at yourself in the mirror, admiring the dress Tom had gotten for you last year. It was for your birthday, 9 days before he made it official between him and Taylor. It was right around the chest, making your breast stand out, but flowed out some towards the bottom, stopping just above the knees. It fit your frame so well.
**
You had finally made it to Toms dinner, his brothers and his parents there as well. You are more than upset though because you never could get one time alone with Tom to ask him how he was doing because she was always standing right by him. almost threw out the whole dinner she made it all about herself, not once did you hear her complement Tom on his new job she would just keep speaking about what she was doing for herself or what Tom bought her. you could see that he was just happy to have everyone there because he was so locked up all the time because of her. She didn’t want him around anyone without her self.
“ when are you going to come over Tom ?” Asked looking over at him. “you’ve got to see the theater room I created” you beamed excitedly. It wasn’t much, it was just a projector in an empty room with bean bag chairs and blankets laid out. You even had a closet full of DVD’s and snacks.
“ oh you finally did it? “ he replied. You had always told him you were jealous of his built in theater at his home and that when you found you something bigger, you were going to get your own too. He had knew you had moved but he has yet to step inside your home. Of course because of Taylor.
“ yeah!” You beamed. “ you’ll love it!”.
You could feel the glare from Taylor though, at this point you had come to the conclusion she didn’t like the thought of any other woman being in Toms life, which was extremely possessive.
“ yeah I’d love that” he exclaimed with a sincere smile. Moments later Taylor set her fork down aggressively before standing up.
“ thank you all for coming to celebrate Tom, but I must go wash up” she said brushing the crumbs off the bottom of her dress. “ goodnight” she said before sticking her nose in the air, walking back towards their shared bedroom. You scoffed shaking your head.
What a fucking bitch.
The rest of Toms’ family got the hint and started to say their goodbyes but you weren’t going to let her win like that.
“ here I’ll help you out dishes up “ you said grabbing your dishes. He nodded before helping you pick them off the table. As you were scraping the eff overs into the trash, you heard Taylor calling out Toms name from the bed room.
“ I’ll be right back” he said before walking towards his room. You sighed heavily, sadness coming over you. It wasn’t fair for your best friend to be dealing with such a horrible person. She was so selfish she couldn’t even let him enjoy a mean with his own family.
“Hey y/n” Tom said walking up next to you.
“ hmm” you said not looking up from the plate you were washing.
“ you gotta go” he said softly. You knew what happened. She complained and whined until she got her way.
“ what do you mean Tom” you asked, even though you already knew the answer. You looked over at him and could see that he wanted to cry he was so upset.
“ please don’t be mad at me” he pleaded, he reminded you of an innocent puppy who’s owner treated him like shit. “ she just doesn’t feel comfortable with us being alone together any. “ he explained. “ she doesn’t know what either of our intentions are” you scoffed rolling your eyes.
“ Tom are you fucking kidding me?” Yoh snapped. You weren’t even being quiet anymore. You wanted her to hear you at this point. “ this is bullshit she can’t tell you who you can and can’t hang out with “ you said. You were fuming at this point. How dare she.
“Y/n I know I know I just-“
“ no Tom! Man up!” At this point his head was lowered , too humiliated to even look at you. You really weren’t mad at him. You were pissed at her. The disappointment in him for allowing someone to treat him like that was radiating off of you by now though. You knew he deserved better and so did he. “ this is not the Tom I know” you said, your voice lowering with each word. At this point you didn’t want to say anything else that might hurt him out of anger so you walked back into the dining room grabbing your stuff before heading out the door without even saying a goodbye.
You sat in your car for a moment contemplating on whether or not you should go back inside and apologize to Tom for the way you acted. He honestly didn’t deserve you snapping on him like that but your anger was towards her not him. but before you could even make your mind up, you heard yelling and even glass breaking inside.
“ oh my God” you said before jumping back out of the car, running towards the door. You started knocking really really hard, praying you got someone’s attention before things got worse. Everything went quiet for a second before the front door swung open. It was Taylor. She noticed it was you and push the door back to almost being closed to where you could only see her.
“ What do you want Y/N “ she spat out.
“ I thought I heard- never mind where is Tom?” You asked crossing your arms.
“ he’s unavailable Y/n I really think you should leave” she stated. She still hadn’t opened the door up, as if she was hiding something. “ and if we are being honest here, I really don’t think yours and Tom’s friendship is appropriate anymore”
Bitch what?
“ well with all due respect Taylor I don’t care what you think right now I want to know where Tom is” you snapped back . Seconds later you heard someone sniffle, as if they were crying. You quickly pushed open to door to see Tom in the living room on the couch. “TOM” you yelled, making him look up. You couldn’t believe your eyes. He had tears in his eyes with a wet wash cloth up ahi sat his nose, blood lover the wash cloth.
“ what the FUCK did you do to him!?” You yelled, pushing Taylor back with both hands against her chest.
“ y/n Stop!” Tom yelled but before you had even realized what you were doing , your hands were clenched in fists, swinging at Taylor. You were fuming, adrenaline pumping through your body as you kept swinging at her. She tried to fight you off by kicking your leg at you and pushing at your arms but to no avail.
“ y/n stop please!l Tom yelled while wrapping his arms around your waist, pulling you in the air off of Taylor.
“ you can fucking have him” she cried out while getting up, wiping the blood up off her nose . “ you’re fucking psycho!” She yelled at you before grabbing her purse and keys, running outside.
“ are you okay?” He asked brushing your face out of your hair while you tried catching your breath.
“ she didn’t even touch me Tom” you said looking back at him, dried up blood on the edge of his nostrils. “ are you okay?” You asked putting your hands around his face.
“ I -I don’t know what happened y/n” he said reminiscing back to their argument. “ she was just so mad and jealous and I told her I couldn’t do it anymore, that she couldn’t keep pushing everyone and way and she just snapped” he said running his fingers through his hair stressfully. “ I told her to calm down and she started shoving stuff off of the night stands. I mean she broke my lamp that my dad got me. and when I grabbed her arm to get her to stop she just .. she hit me” he said sitting down on the couch. He lowered his head down into his hands, his breath trembling as he tried to hold back the tears.
“ this is not your fault Tom. She was possessive and toxic as shit and I am so so sorry” you said hugging him from the side. You both cried together for a few moments in silence . He didn’t deserve a lick of this .
“ what if she calls the police, or-or tells the press” he stated frantically. You could tell he was panicking but you just grabbed his face making him look at you.
“ Tom look at me , it’s two against one. She hit you! You never touched her. Anyone and everyone who knows you knows you’d never lay a finger on her or anyone at that matter” you stated , rubbing your thumb against your cheek. “ I love you so much” your voice started trembling as you wanted to cry. “ I will never ever let another woman hurt you like that again Tom. I should’ve intervened back when she started showing signs “ you said shaking yourself .
“ this isn’t your fault Y/N it’s my fault for staying” he exclaimed trying to take the blame off of yourself.
“ no” you said sternly. “ this is all on her okay . Tom she’s a horrible person” . You quickly wrapped your hands around him, holding tight onto him.
“ I don’t ever want to lose you” he said softly, slowly pulling his head away from yours. “ you’re so perfect” he said staring at your lips. Before you could even think you leaned in , pressing your lips against his.
“ I-I’m sorry” you stuttered as you pulled away. He shook his head before leaning back in kissing you again. This time it was more heated than before. Your hands found there way through his hair, tugging slightly while your tongues moved along each others.
“ owe” Tom said breaking the make out session.
“ oh I’m sorry” you exclaimed , realizing you were bumping into his nose. “ cmon we’ll clean that up”.
he followed you into his bedroom towards his bathroom where you both had to step over the knocked over items and broken glass from the lamp.
“ sit” you demanded pointing towards the counter. Tom propped himself up against it while you used a wet wash cloth wiping away the dry blood from his nose. While you focused on cleaning him, you felt his hand trailing up the sides of your thigh, moving closer and closer towards your throbbing area. You felt shivers run through your body as his fingers glided so easily up your body.
“ Tom” you whispered, leaning your forehead against his.
“I want you” he whispered back, his hand now placed firmly against your heat. You gasped loudlyas you felt him rub upwards against you, causing friction that you didn’t realized you craved so much. “ please” he said before cocking his head to the side, his lips connecting with yours once again. You quickly tossed down the wash cloth before grabbing the sides of Toms face, while his moved to the back of your thighs. He quickly switched places with you propping you up against the countertop this time, his tooth brush and cologne falling off the the side. You only broke your kiss for a second while he pulled his shirt off over his head , only to connect lips again. You reached behind your back unzipping your dress as Tom kissed down your neck to your collar bones , sucking on the skin slightly.
“ Tom” you said in between kisses.
“Yeah”
“ your pants” you suggested while tugging at the top of his jeans .
“ oh “ he said scooting back before sliding down his pants and briefs. Your eyes wired as his thick long cock bounced back up against his stomach. Your eyes roaming his whole now naked figure in front of you. He had the body of a literal God. “ lift your hips” he said while tugging against yours . You giggled as he almost pulled you off of the counter trying to pull your dress and panties down your legs.
“ condom?” You questioned, looking around. He nodding before opening the bottom cabinet door, pulling a box of condoms out.
“ you ready?l he asked, lifting your legs up over his arms. You nodded quickly looking him in the eyes. You both moaned out loudly as he he slid himself in you only to pull himself back out. You leaned your back against the mirror as Tom went in and out of you at a rapid pace, your breast bouncing with each thrust. The bathroom echoed with moans and the sounds of your skin slapping together, the mirror steaming up from your hot breaths. You reached down, your hand on his abs as the muscles flexed with each thrust.
“ god Tom” you screamed out as one of his hands found their way to your clit, rubbing fast in circular motions. You could feel yourself getting close so you wrapped your legs around Toms waste, pulling him deeper. Watching you climax sent Tom over, his moan becoming deep and long. You both road out your orgasms before Tom pulled o if, tossing the filled condom in the trash.
“ wow” you beamed sliding off of the counter.
“ why didn’t we do that sooner?” He asked while getting himself dressed. You shrugged sliding your panties but up.
“ cause I wasn’t beating any of your girlfriends ass “ you joked looking back up.
“ well maybe there won’t be anymore girls “ he said making the conversation go from casual to serious. You furrowed your eyebrows together, cocking your head to the side in confusion. “ y/n you’ve been there for me through everything . “ he exclaimed . “ literally. You know me the best , you’re beautiful, smart .. you’re just perfect” he said grabbing your hands. “ I’ve realized no one can make me as happy as you do” he said pulling you close . You thought about it . All your past relationships never worked out either, you were never fully happy with them , especially not as happy as you were with Tom.
“ so what are you suggesting ? “ you said grinning.
“ be mine” he said. “ not just my best friend “
You thought for a moment, pretending to hesitate on the question , laughing when you realized he was becoming worried.
“ of course Tom”

Let me know if you guys want an opposite version of this, where you’re in the toxic relationship and he’s the best friend. 💖

a/n: this is the part 2 to You Still Up? :) enjoy :)
✩✶✩❇✩✶✩
“No.” He snaps, his voice cracking. “It’s okay… I understand.”
“I’m sorry…”
“No… don’t do that. Please, a-anything but that. I want to date you, y/n. Don’t m-make this harder.”
Your eyes search his face, hoping that for some reason he was being dumb, that his feelings are true. It scares you. The food in your stomach turning into acid as you stare at the blond who refuses to look at you.
“I’m going to go.” You whisper.
“Yeah, that’s for the best.” He snaps, his eyes hardening over.
You leave without a word, and as soon as you were out, Kaminari broke down. His sobs wrecking in his chest as you left him.
You stood outside his door, your throat thick with emotions as you wanted to go back inside. Your pride keeping you from walking back in as you hear his cries. You did this after all.
✩✶✩❇✩✶✩
Three Months Later
✩✶✩❇✩✶✩
Stun Gun Hero: Chargebolt Seeing Mysterious Woman?! Is This Love?!
Your eyes read the title of the latest news article.
Honestly, what a fucking joke.
You scrolled through the article as you tried to see a picture of the two of them. The same repeated words going through your mind as you looked at the gossip magazines about Kaminari:
You don’t care.
You don’t care.
You don’t care.
The train you were on stops, and you glance up from your phone. This was your stop.
Standing up, you followed the crowd off the train. Your head was still down, focusing on the device on your hand as you tried to figure out if this gossip tease magazine had the information you wondered about. You didn’t care, you repeated as you entered the building to your job.
You were a support tech.
Famous for your groundbreaking new support equipment and how quickly you were rising in the ranks as tech support, you loved your job. It was, after all, how you met the girls. The six of them were all recommended to you, and after being invited to Momo’s birthday celebration two years back, you had been adopted into their inner circle.
Waving towards your work friends, you walked into your workspace area. Today you were to start off with being assigned to a temporary client as Hatsume Mei managed to destroy her entire tech building. It would take her approximately three weeks to reconfigure, and at that time you and the others in your company would be taking on her clients. You found the situation to be hysterical, only Hatsume Mei could manage something as chaotic as that.
Locking your phone, you finally greeted everyone in your workroom. Your body stiffening as you made eye contact with a pair of yellow eyes.
“Ah, you’re here, y/l/n!” Your boss chirped as she motioned to the chair beside her.
Choosing to ignore the yellow eyes that quickly moved away from you, you looked over to your boss as you bowed in apology. “I’m sorry! Had I known the client was going to be here so early, I would have been here sooner. I hope you can forgive me.” You state with a neutral face as you go sit down.
Taking your seat, you refused to turn your chair towards him.
Why were you acting this way? You thought, berating yourself for your childish actions. You were the one to break his heart!
Your boss, thankfully, continued on as if there was nothing particularly weird or tense about the room.
“Hatsume-san said that her hardest project right now surrounded Chargebolt-san.” Your boss explains as she motions towards the blond man. “She specifically requested, and of course I too agree with her statement, that you should take the challenge!”
“It’s not that hard of a project.” His voice says. It’s smooth and strained, your back stiffening as you can detect that he was not happy with this. “I need a new support item that your worst employee could make without breaking a sweat.”
Sighing you quickly turn to shoot a gaze towards the blond, his eyes refusing to meet yours.
“If Chargebolt wants to give his accommodation to our worst employee, I think we should listen.” You say, although internally you’re yelling at yourself.
“Oh please,” Your boss waves her hands as she laughs. As always, your boss was unable to see the tension in the room. “I promised Hatsume that this could and would only be entrusted to you! Now y/l/n, do your best! Make us proud!”
You watched with tense horror as your boss stood as she excused herself.
The silence between you and Kaminari felt deafening as you press your lips into a tight line as you finally turn towards the Pro-Hero who is looking at your window. He’s unimpressed, rigid, and looks even more uncomfortable than you.
“What did you need?” You ask finally, your arms folding as you stand up. You walk over towards your computer, looking for the files on his costume that you would be needing.
“Nothing from you.” He rolls his eyes as he looks at you.
The tension in the room is thick, your gazes locked as neither one of you dare to look away.
“You’re here for a reason, Chargebolt.” You say slowly. “I suggest you tell me, or I will make sure it backfires on you.”
“You’d get your license revoked,” He retaliates. “Obviously you look out for only yourself, so I don’t think you will.”
“Why are you even here?” You snap. “You probably knew that I was being assigned your case. Yet you still showed up? What do you want because we both know you could have claimed a bullshit reason for not being here.”
It’s silent for a while, the roar of your heart in your ears as you wished you could have stopped talking. There was no reason for your harsh words. No reason for you to be behaving this way. But seeing him in person after so many months really was doing something dumb to you.
“Because I care about my connections,” Kaminari answers, his eyebrow quirked.
“Oh shut the fuck up!” You groan as your lip curls. “I spent months with feelings for you! Months! Every time I started to believe that maybe I was different to you, you shoved me out. Don’t fucking complain to me about caring about connections!”
He stares at you, and you glare back.
Tears boil in your eyes as you shake your head, “Now tell me what you fucking want, or get the hell out of my office.”
You heard the sound of rolling wheels and the door opening and closing.
Harsh breathes of air escaping your nose as you willed yourself not to cry. Willing yourself to get over these fucking emotion as you opened the document that Hatsume sent to you.
You were doing this for her, not for him.
✩✶✩❇✩✶✩
It was two weeks after your first meeting with Kaminari after months of not seeing him.
More news on his growing romance with a mystery woman seemed to be the hottest new thing. Your skin crawled and nausea built up within you as you read the new articles every day. The tall and handsome blond escorting a beautiful woman around who had managed to cover her face in every snap. You didn’t fucking care.
It was obvious that nothing was ever going to come from you and him anymore. The relationship between the two of you dead. No longer able to be revived.
A spark of electricity slammed through you as you yelped.
The feeling had been almost forgotten as you rub your arm. His stupid support item was to revolutionize the way he shot out his electricity. The shooter on his arm no longer viable and often left him in a corner if he wasn’t smart enough.
So you were working on something inspired by Eraserhead’s capture weapon. A material that he could conduct his electricity through and manipulate. So far it had been disastrous, it wasn’t working, and you were getting hurt.
“Are you done yet?” His voice calls from the doorway.
You still as your hand stops rubbing your arm, your head turning towards the blond hero who was leaning against the doorframe. His eyes concentrated on the item you were working on.
Sighing you rubbed your hands onto your work pants. The denim rough against your skin as you shake your head.
“Not yet.” You say as you glance at the clock. It was four in the morning. You’d been working for twenty hours straight. “Fuck.” You mumble as he walks over to you, his hands in his pockets as he stares at your creation.
“What is that?” He asks as his fingers grab onto the material.
“Your item.” You state while pinching your nose. Finally able to take a break, you realized just how tired you were, your head pounding as you grabbed your water.
“This isn’t what I asked for.”
“You left.” You don’t even bother to look at him as you shut down your station. “Why are you even here?” You ask as you take the item from him and pack it away.
“Just finished with rounds.” He says with a shrug.
“Yeah, but there was no guarantee that I would be here.” You say as you pack up your things. “What on earth made you come here?”
“Well, I figured you would be here.” He says with a shrug. “You were always being asked to be picked up here at godawful times.”
“Stop avoiding the question, Chargebolt.” You roll your eyes as you look at him.
His eyes lock on yours, they’re quiet, contemplative. His face screws slightly as he looks away. “I don’t know.” He admits.
Sighing you shake your head, “Okay. I’m going home now though, so you kinda have to leave too.” Turning, you begin walking out, hoping that he will follow after you.
“Did…” Kaminari says, his voice pausing. You look at him, your breathing stilling as you watch as the blond hero walks over to you. Your breathing sitting heavy in your chest as he stands in front of you. His face is hurt, confused, and filled beyond with every emotion you’ve ever thought you’d see on his face. You feel like trapped, as his hands touch your cheeks.
“D-Denki…” You whisper, your eyes widen as you stare at the blond who refuses to look at you.
Your voice calling his name cements whatever seems to be cooking within his head, and your body stills as his lips come to touch yours.
Your bag slips from your hands as his lips are soulful against yours. They move against your frozen ones, his eyes clenched closed as he is trying to coax some reaction you can’t figure out from you. You feel him stiffen against you, his eyes flying wide as he pulls away, his face clouded with embarrassment and humiliation.
But you can’t stop yourself.
You seize forward, your hands grabbing his cheeks as you bring him into a searing kiss.
A broken sigh of relief escapes Kaminari’s mouth as he is fervor in returning the kiss. His hands grabbing your hips as your arms fly around his neck. Your lips dancing with his as you gasp aloud. You’re not sure if the electricity flying between the two of you is from his quirk or something else. But its the electricity that makes you feel drunk, your hands tangling into his blond locks as you will your inseparable bodies even closer.
“Fuck!” Kaminari growls as his mouth leaves yours to trial down your neck.
Your hands fist into his shirt as your head falls back, allowing him complete access to your skin.
Your breathing is heavy, panting, and fast as he lifts you up.
Your hips grinding heavily against his as Kaminari places you on your workbench.
He stands between your legs, his mouth sucking harsh bruises into your skin. The static between you so large you feel as if your hair is going to stand up anytime soon.
Your lewd noises rile him on, his teeth now sinking into your skin as you cry his name.
The long-forgotten feeling of heated pressure began building in your lower belly as his fingers trail up to your breasts. “Don’t be a fucking tease!” You snap as you pull his shirt off his person.
Kaminari pulls away as the shirt on his body is thrown off. Your shirt quickly joins his as your mouths reconnect.
Heavy, passionate, and longing.
Lips meeting in the middle of this passionate dance as his hands touch the clasp on your bra.
“I love you,” He whispers against your mouth. “I missed you so fucking much, y/n.”
You feel yourself freeze at these words.
Your eyes widening as you shove him away from you.
The electricity your body was feeling still runs rampant through you, the tremble in your skin is evident as you stare at Kaminari who’s eyes are wide.
“Get out.” You whisper, your eyes wild as you look at him.
“Y/n—”
“We can’t do this!” You shriek, your head shaking as you pull at your hair. “You… you have that mystery girl! We can’t be doing this!”
“Mystery girl?” Kaminari’s face contorts into anger and confusion. “Are you fucking serious y/n?”
“Yes, I’m serious Denki!”
“What the actual fuck are you so goddamn afraid of?!” Kaminari snarls as he glares at you. “I can’t fucking win with you, can I?! Are you really going to freak out about me saying I love you? I slipped up, it’s what happens when I’m overwhelmed!”
Your lip trembles as you stare at him, unable to say anything.
“What are you afraid of, y/n?!”
You’re not sure why you say what you say next, only that as you say the following words your mind goes blank.
“Get. Out. Kaminari.”
His eyes seem to flash with electricity as his nostrils flare.
A cold laugh escapes his lips as he shakes his head at you.
“You’re fucking unbelievable.” He snaps as he picks up his shirt and pulls it on. He leaves you alone in your room, and your world seems to fall apart as the door to this office floor slams.
Broken sobs escape your mouth as you curl onto your workbench.
Why the fuck did you do that?

“Wow!” Hatsume exclaimed as she looked at the final product for Kaminari’s support item. “I didn’t expect you to do this to my baby!”
You shrug as you let the pink-haired tech genius examine your work. She grinned as she looked around it.
“I really like this!” She exclaims as she sets it down. “I’m surprised... uh, what’s his name…” She trails off as she thinks.
“Kaminari?” You ask with a small laugh, how this girl didn’t remember any of her clients was beyond you, but you found it hilarious.
“Yes!” Hatsume nods with a large grin. “I’m surprised he’s not here!”
Your lips purse at the thought of what occurred here less than five nights ago. “Why?” You ask nevertheless, the curious cat in you wanting to know what was going on.
“He personally asked for you to be the one to fix his item.” Hatsume laughs. “I was super surprised because he’s a very relaxed client who lets me do whatever I want! I expected he’d be here for final fittings.”
Your teeth bit your inner cheek as you shrug. “Hero life?” You offered. “It’s chaotic?”
“I guess!” Hatsume laughs. “I think he really likes you! But anyway, I have to go! I have a few babies that need Mei’s attention!” She cackles as she turns on her heel and walks out with a wave.
Your eyes followed after her as you took in her words.
Why did she have to talk without thinking?
Your eyes fell down onto your phone, and your lips pressed together.
What were the odds?
you: hey… you still there?
Your finger trembles as you pressed send.
Now you wait.

One Day Later
✩✶✩❇✩✶✩
kaminari: what do you want y/n? Because I can’t do this shit anymore. Be honest with me, what do you want from me?
✩✶✩❇✩✶✩
you: who is she? Screenshot_10439-32
kaminari: are you serious? Is that what you were talking about that night?
you: yes.
kaminari: she’s someone i was looking after, she was caught up in the organization i was taking down with some other heroes
you: oh
kaminari: yeah
you: i’m sorry
kaminari: it’s fine
you: can i see you?
kaminari: sorry
you: it’s okay! No worries :)
kaminari: cool
You placed your phone down as you massaged your temples.
It was over.
Your head fell back onto your pillows as you feel like you needed to cry. Your chest is heavy as you fell asleep.
…
…
…
..
..
.
KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.
Your eyes slam open as your body jolts awake.
The pounding at your apartment’s front door made you quickly get out of bed as you scramble towards the door.
You open it wide to see Kaminari with a desperate look on his face.
“Say it.” He says as you stare at him.
Your mouth opens and closes, words failing you.
“Say what you needed to say when you wanted to see me.” He says again, his hands holding your shoulders.
“I…” Your eyes blink as you stare into his frantic eyes. Words fail you, as they normally do. All you can do is feel your stomach spring with butterflies as you clutch the collar of his shirt and slam his mouth against yours.
He doesn’t resist, going in to kiss you wholly, completely, and passionately.
It makes your head spin and for the first time in a long time, you feel as if everything is finally okay. That everything is going to work out.
“Can I take you on a date?” You whisper as he starts walking you back into your apartment. The door closing behind the two of you.
“Would you please?”
