One Piece Academy chapter 40: Cora san (Quick translation)
[source] [translation index]
Lucci: Donquixote Doflamingo's younger brother, Donquixote Rosinante. Codename: Corazon.
He used to be an executive staff of the Donquixote Family. However, for the last two years, he's 'missing.'
[New world Middle school, Student council]
Lucci: Tell me what you know about this man,
...Trafalgar Law.
Law: I hear you, but what's with the stupid costumes?
Luffy: Y'all sure got style!
Kalifa: To dispel the "scary, unapproachable, unfriendly" allegations against the school council, this.. is the "student council image improvement campaign" proposed by our advisor.
Law: .......... Oh.
Sanji: So, Doflamingo has a brother?
Kaku: Yeah. While investigating him, we came to learn the existence of Corazon, and,
The fact that a former member of the Donquixote Family was you, Trafalgar Law.
Usopp/Chopper: EEEEH????!
Luffy: So you're friends with Mingo?
Law: I get the full picture. I was indeed a part of this Family in the past, and Corazon, no...
...Cora-san is my benefactor, and I got my Life and my Heart from him.
Bepo: Captain, you're okay with speaking about that?
Law: Baseless suspicions are bothersome, that's all.
Kaku: Mind sharing the rest of the story?
Law: Yeah. When I was seven..
I developed an incurable disease that stumped even the doctors.
Without warning, my body caught a sickness that was supposedly eradicated long time ago.
My father, even though he was a famous doctor in the city - couldn't determine its cause.
Vivi: And then, the three remaining years you had according to your father...
Chopper:...was spent on moving to large hospitals that refused to treat you? Was there so little literary background of the disease?
Robin: Prejudices from lack of knowledge in unknown cities, the government's isolationist, unjust instructions.. it must've been terrible.
Law: I cursed the world for it. I didn't want to bother my parents anymore and fled from home, wandered by myself,
then I arrived in front of him. The man who wants to destroy everything, the man I wanted to be like..
I was at the doorsteps of Doflamingo.
Zoro: Just like that, you could've become one of the thugs like him, but that didn't happen...
Nami:.. because you met a certain other person?
{Flashback: Law, look! It's the op-op fruit!
It's a fruit that can save your life! So, eat it! Hurry up, swallow down!}
Brook: So, with the medical knowledge from your parents and the fruit's ability, you treated yourself...
Franky: From Doflamingo's point of view, it happened to be a fruit he wanted for some reason.
Sanji: and he felt out witted by his younger brother...
Usopp: So, a raging Doflamingo appeared before Corazon -
Nami: And at the end, you saw a mysterious light from behind the lockers. What was that?
Blueno: An explosion?
Lucci: That sounds reasonable...
Jabra: A last resort move from Corazon, huh? Well, Doflamingo couldn't just give up.
Coby: After regaining consciousness, Law-san, you held the words of Corazon in your heart, to "meet him at the next town" and kept walking...but the man never appeared....
Law: A person that's gone, is gone. Any other question?
Lucci: None.
Usopp: Who knew Traffy had a past like that...
Luffy: AAAAAH!
Usopp: MAN, THAT SPOOKED ME!
Coby: Luffy san! What happened.. OH RIGHT!
Luffy: I FORGOT TO TELL TRAFFY THE THING!
Nami: Ah, you're right! We got side tracked by the student council...
Luffy: Where's he?
Zoro: He left.
Lufffy: Then let's go to Traffy's place.
Usopp: Do you even know where he lives?
This nerd
Corazon: WELCOME BACK, LAAW!!!
Law: I'm back... Cora san, take off your coat while cleaning -
Luffy: THERE HE IS!!
TAFFY!! WE'RE THROWING A RICEBALL PARTY!
Nami: Luffy! You should ring the doorbell first!!
Luffy: n?

Altering the Final War's Battlefields
With the series done, one of the few things that took me until now to get to was basically a bit of a revamp of the Second War battlefields.
The problem with them in the long run for me is that, LOV members aside, there was just...no other major villain established in those fields to really give a shit about or really have a sense of dread about.
One of the major differences between the 1st and 2nd War is that, regardless of how you feel about the results of the 1st War, waltzing into it you understood that the Villains were very credible, established threats.
The League of Villains and their upgraded powers, the MLA top brass and knowing what havoc just one of them could do, the High End Nomus that lay in waitin production thanks to Ujiko, Gigantomachia being a living disaster, 100K soldiers who we know should be on par with regular Heroes from training and have put the LOV on the backfoot. YMMV on how the 1st War turned out, but walking in there was some solid anticaption and intrigue in how these elements would be used....
The Second War does not have that. Why? Because Horikoshi kinda just...gutted the PLF and didn't reaaaaaaallly bring suitable, built-up replacements for them?
High Ends that have personality and can think? Nope, back to just the dumbass Nomus who are just rampaging monsters...that's it.
The PLF soldiers? Literally just 100 people now and, even then, the jailbreakers they got to replace them are just...well, nothing, like I talked about here.
The top brass of the LOV/PLF? Most who could provide interesting fights or intrigue were taken away for just Skeptic...whose regulated back 'hackerman' only.
Replacing them are either AFO's Assassins or Advisors who are just ether not developed at all or just came in too late, beaten too quick and used too little to care about. Thus, it really makes them feel totally irrelevent to the other stuff going around during the war.
For all the talk of the Heroes being at a disadvantage, it certainly did not feel so with just...6 of the bad guys out of a hundred or so people would really care about.. As such, my list below is basically having major Villains take the spots of the Jailbreakers/Advisors as 'Bosses' of their fields so as to give each place a solid Villain to get invested in. In addition, also adding in more returning Villains to help make each place to feel 'alive' in a sense.
If you wanna see how I'd use the Advisors, for the most part (there's a few changes here), look here.
Central Hospital:
This is the most blatant change I feel works for the story better is Trumpet being the ‘Boss’ (or well, one of the Bosses) of Central Hospital. One of the issues in the that battle came about from Disgustus being shoved into two contradictory roles. The first, up until the midway through the battle, is an advocate of mutants that seemed to be genuinely hurt and bitter from the discrimination he’s implied to have gotten (as evidence by his scar)...except then we get to the second half. Which has his internal thoughts filled with how the PLF were just using the mob they gathered as tools and makes him just cartoonishly corrupt.
Instead of him being forced into both, I think a good idea would have been for Trumpet to take the reigns as the corrupt leader, acting as a false sympathizer for the Heteromorphs, and Disgustus to remain as a genuine, if disdainful extremist. It gives a mook of the PLF more depth since it reminds the audience that a lot of the Villains walked down the path due to rough lives, and allows for their still to be a scummy Villain still to stop. Heck, I feel using Trumpet as the Boss also just makes some of the plot feel more coherent, since he can use his Quirk to not only boost the mob, but make them too frenzied up to really listen or notice something being off (like Spinner clearly being out of it due to the additional Quirks) or notice him clearly covering his ass.
In this case, it’s Shoji and Koda beating Trumpet that could allow for the mob splinter to really begin and stall, with the pig guy’s group merely being the final blow to crack the facade for good. As for Disgustus and the rest of Spinner’s crew, they can be defeated right before they could enter the hospital. Something that hurts Shoji and the others badly enough that the mob genuinely could have killed them if not for pig guy. Heck, to help with this option, I also raise Chimera from movie 2 to return, acting as extra muscle for the crowd and, given his own experience being discriminated against, be another pillar of change get the crowd motivated. While Shoji loses the first encounter against Chimera, this second time, he barely manages to defeat him and is in danger of being killed when help arrives.
On a minor note, more of the USJ crew returns, mainly the Heteromorphic side as well, perhaps trying to spread the idea that, from the beginning, the League of Villains was just trying to raise awareness and change…even though that was very much not the case XD
Boss: Spinner, Trumpet
Jailbreaker: Chimera
Advisors: Spinner’s Advisors
Return: Steel Bulwark, Invisible Wall, Chomper, Greedy Gaping Jaw
Okuto Island
Given this is Toga’s battlefield, there’s not quite too many changes I’d make here. I think the most blatant that could be done is make Moonfish, whose acting as the ‘Jailbreaker’ for the Okuto Villains, more prominent. If Kunieda and Gashly are allowed to wipe out or fend off multiple Heroes, than a guy whose supposed to be on par with them should really be allowed to cut loose and be more of a massive thorn for their side. Plus, since I also think League members should at least get at least a significant send-off, I think Tsu being the one to take him down would be a good way of giving her something major to do. In this case, Tsu uses her wits and camouflage to bait Moon into being more careless with his attacks. Something that leads to him leaving himself open to being stunned by her poison mucus before being knocked out.
Another change I’d make is including Eleph from the High Ends on this battlefield. I think it’d hit the point home how much of a gamble splitting hte Villains up from each other was, as there was always a chance one Villain could have a real advantage wherever they got sent to. In this case, Eleph’s quirk allowed him to suck in water to make fierce hydro attacks at his foes.
On a lesser note, I’m also for Hanzo Suiden/USJ water thug to add to his mayhem since it should have been high priority for that water fucker to at do something threatening given that battlefield was his advantage. Perhaps’s he’s teaming up with Eleph to help boost the Nomu’s attacks?
Likewise, for the Advisors section, I’m all for Toga having her #1 Advisor at the scene to help add to the pressure of Okuto.
Boss: Toga
Jailbreaker: Moonfish
Return: Hanzo Suiden, Minotaurus
Nomu: Eleph
Advisors: Toga’s #1 Advisor
Kamino Ward:
Given that the purpose of this place is that it doesn’t have any Major Jailbreakers, only real major tweak I would make for this is that Ribby replaces the NHE here. I think it’d be fitting if the High End assigned to Dabi was also an ax-crazy killer Nomu that wouldn’t give a shit to being set on fire and is just enjoying the chaos of the War. SImilar to the anime, Ida’s attacks with Ribby, alongside someone like Burnin, are what eventually gets him to go down.
Honestly, I’d probably include Starservant and Ending since both were Dabi’s grunts during the EA arc, and it’d be nice for them to assist their boss once more. Plus, both fit the theme of being crazed Villains unconcerned for their lives, like the other two above as well. Not that I think they’d be a major help, but it’d give some familiar faces the audience would recognize and help care more about the battlefields beyond just the final Boss taking up a major focus.
Boss: Dabi
Nomu: Ribby
Return: Starservant, Ending, Sharkyonara (RIP poor bastard), One-Eyed Green Dragon, Sickle Claw
Advisor: Dabi’s 1st ranker
Jaku Ruins:
To take the place of Skully of the Jaku Ruins battlefield, I raise you Geten. Honestly, I think this is the most natural choice as the Face of Jaku Ruins given how Skully shares Geten’s ‘Quirk Makes Right’ mindset and I think it’d hit more for Mina trying to reason with Geten about how both were fighting for their fallen mentors (in this case Re-Destro) than her trying to resonate with a character who hasn’t really been given his due at all. It’d especially hit harder given RD is basically Geten’s Dad too, so ice boy’s attempts at freeing Machia is coming from a placed of enraged love like Mina had.
As the Jailbreaker of Jaku, I raise Slice as being the sort, mostly to act as a villain against Mina, and would be in a similarm indset to geten about trying to avenge a loss loved one + getting payback on Mina while she was at it since it was her acid that cost her the first fight.
Likewise, in this case, all three of Geten’s Advisors + Dabi’s #2, will be at Jaku. Skully is there to work with Bindi Girl into creating gas that’ll keep their forces safe. Geten’s #3 can probably utter his mammonist line from overhearing about the Heroes plot, and be apart from the first wave of the Jaku villain forces to intercept the Heroes (before being taking out fairly easily - he’s No. 3 for a reason after all). As for Geten’s #1…well, he’’ likely just be there for Geten to bounce ideas off and defend the Commander against enemy attacks.
Now, on the returning Villain side, I’m surprised Giant Villain wasn’t brought back to rematch Mt. Lady. He’ll not be as strong as her, but he can keep her busy after she stomped through a good number of their guys. And, like in canon, Sludge Villain can stay and do his thing. Also, as apart of the first wave, Teruo’s here…to probably be one-shot immediately again, but he will be there XD
Boss: Geten
Jailbreaker: Slice
Return: Sludge Villain, Giant Villain, Teruo Hazakashi (Naked Guy), Axer, Stitched Giant
Advisors: Geten’s Advisors, Dabi’s #2 Advisor
Troy Parking Lot
Now this is one of the trickier locations since it’s pretty just one of the ‘spares’ of the battle. But, ultimately, I think it can work to be something even more meaningful than in canon. In this case, I want Mr. Compress to be left behind here. The support of the League faceing off against pretty much the spares of the Heroes trying to mop up the last of the resistance. Plus, it’s not like Compress doesn’t have a Hero of his own he has beef with. Aoyama was the reason his plan to capture both Bakugo and Tokoyami went screwy, and given Aoyama comes from a rich family that his ancestors would have likely stolen from, well…there’s a lot fun you can have between these two brawling out.
The way I see it, Kunieda makes his plants like in canon, and thanks to Compress’ mask, (alongside several other Villains still remaining that do wear masks of their own or maybe even just Kunieda has control over who he turns into plants) Compress is able to go back to his tree hopping shtick like in the training camp arc and show off his own stealth abilities again. Able to gradually whittle down the Heroes by taking advantage of the foliage to turn those who aren’t plant turned into marbles.
Since there are no Nomu here, the lesser Villains will be made of minor villain gangs, those like Cider House to Team Resvoir Dogs. Stragglers that are really only lasting as long due to Kunieda’s cover and will likely go down after Aoyama/Hagakure’s combo attack.
Boss: Mr. Compress
Jailbreaker: Kunieda
Return:Cider House, Blade Villain/Street Thieves, Reservoir Dogs, Gorilla, Spike
Advisors: Compress #3,
Takoba Stadium:
Honestly, this might sound weird, but Skeptic honestly could have taken Gashly’s place. Gashly’s whole thing is that he spawns minions to outlast others while he himself is in a safe location…
Kinda like Skeptic’s Quirk…or Twice’s…or Toga with Twice’s Quirk (Horikoshi didn’t spend much time on Gashly’s power, let’s be real…). If the main boss of Takoba is just a summoner, than just let Skeptic be badass and not only hack UA’s systems, but also fuck people up via his henchmen too? Heck, you don’t even have to do much to explain how he can do both without issue.
Have him hide somewhere during the chaos…or alternatively? Bring back the Shie Hassaikai guy, Tengai, Barrier and allow Skeptic to camp with in. As for how he can use his set-up at all, have AFO’s spies implant a virus that allows Skeptic access to UA’s systems so that he can safely work his magic in peace…at least up until La Brava stops him. As for how he can fight so well, perhaps have a chapter detailing Skeptic actually bothering to improve his Quirk so that he doesn’t need to use much to create puppets thats can do simple commands, and with access to Detnerat support items, he can effectively spawn more infinitely.
That’s how you can explain Skeptic outlasting the others for so long. At least, up until Tengai is knocked out by Tokage and Kamikiri via the Warp Gate. Thus, shutting down the barrier to allow Skeptic and any remaining Villains to be wiped out.
Of course, there’s also the issue of the likes of Ketsubutsu’s deal with Skeptic being overturned, though I think a good way to handle that is to have them also at Takoba trying to take Skeptic’s forces down. In this case, a good midtier Villain that can give them a challenge is Deidoro Sakaki and Katsukame. Sakaki’s Sloshed and Katsukame’s energy drain are being a real nuisance in preventing the Heroes from getting to Skeptic, so it’s up to Ketsubetsu to stop them. In this case, Shindo and Nakagame take down Sakaki, while Ms. Joke and those other two guys beat Katsukame. Thus, freeing up more space to focus on the nerdy fuck who needs to get out of the barrier.
As for any other side Villains to go along with Skeptic, I’m all for including the likes of the Carmine Advisors that made it out, beyond Toga’s 1st ranker. So Toga #3 and Skeptic’s #3. As for Gashly, he can still work as the main muscle, albeit with a revamped Quirk? Perhaps his Baby Tree quirk is more on the psychological side of things that make Skeptic’s puppets even more of a hassle to fight against? Nomu for Takoba will be Chubs to add to the whole theme of ‘this place is chalk full of tanky, long-distance, support fuckers who won’t fight directly’ which is just bound to get on the Takoba Heroes nervesXD
Main Boss: Skeptic
Jailbreaker: Gashly (with a revamped Quirk, probably something rhyme-based to help Skeptic’s puppets out)
Return: Tengai, Katsukame, Sakaki - Shie Hassaikai. Needle Hair, Martial Hair
PLF: Skeptic #3/Toga’s #3
Nomu: Chubs
UA Shelters
Always thought this was more of a shame that there wasn’t really any proper fights here. Yeah, I know the idea is ‘oh, we can’t let the Villains in’ but c’moooon! It’s the final fight - let them be more of a threat by a few breaking in, causing the Heroes on the inside to try to stop them.
Let Mustard return to spray his gas to help weaken the Heroes defenses, which allows him to get a rematch with Kendo and Tetsu again! Let Mimic get smuggled into UA to take control of the damn thing after Skeptic failed! Have the remaining yakuza work with the saboteurs, acting as their guardsman while they try to bring UA down and it’s a race against time to really stop them. Hell, let Mummy return to use his powers to turn the machinery against the Heroes and have them work hard as Hell to stop him!!
How did they get in? IDK, let one of the saboteurs have a Quirk that let’s them be dollar tree version of Mr. Compress, or maybe they snuck in, if only barely. Heck, maybe after Kurogiri is freed, AFO placed the data for inside of UA and the team meant to rampage in it (thanks to the spies) inside of Shiggy’s mask and Kurogiri warped the taskforce in after the factl There are ways to go about it to make it work. Just allow people like Kaminari and Momo to get more to do than off-screen deal with Twice copies!!!
But, with that in mind, every location needs a boss of some sort, right?...So why not have the one in charge of such operations be Giran? Have him sneak into UA via his muddle Quirk and make him the director of sabotage for the Villain forces, something he’d be proud to do since he’d want revenge for Twice's death. As for how he doesn’t get folded instantly when found out, if you don’t want to have him unguarded, you can have him use his/Detenerat’s support items to hold off Heroes long enough to make some play happen for his side. I just think it’d be a fitting way to end his story trying to payback the man who saved his life instead of just…not existing after a while.
Boss: Giran
League: Mustard
Jailbreaker: Mummy
Shie Hassaikai: Chronostasis, Mimic, Nemoto, Garbage Trio
PLF: Saboteurs (Tajima, Mihaera, and three people no one cares about)
Gunga Villa
Last, but not least, we got the Gunga battlefield…which is very much due for an uplift. Seriously, the battlefield against the Demon Lord should not have been so damn barren like in canon. Even the Nomus that got sent with him, who were giving everyone else so much trouble, went down likes chumps. So…how to correct it?
Simple! Make it the powerhouse buffet with all the heaviest of hitters being sent there. Woman and her analytical skills mixed with her bloodlust? She’s there to kick ass like the rampaging beast queen that she is, and ensure that the the Heroes really don’t get that much of a break while AFO is wrapped up fighting Team Endeavor in the skies.
Rappa of the Eight Bullets rampaging through the battlefield, knocking out people clean up until Kirishima arrives on Machia - then the rematch of a lifetime could occur!!! I will never stop harping on this, I truly believe we should have gotten a Kirishima and Rappa rematch in the Final War, and its a WASTE Rappa/none of the yakuza besides Overhaul returned!!!
Toxic Chainsaw, the name-dropped foe that All Might whooped back in the 1st chapter and could have probably been a neat callback? Add in Dreadlock Jailbreaker having a spike quirk and the threat from a living pincushion and toxic waste shoots the threat level way up. These guys I’ld probably leave as a deal opponents for the Shiketsu side of things, to give them some form of meaningful foe to clear out before taking on AFO.
Finally, the name-dropped Sanctum and the rest of the Twice Squad serving as, well not really AFO back-up, but general mook rallying nonetheless so the battlefield for this affair is a bit more of semi-organized affair for the Villains instead of a huge mosh pit where they got wiped out so easily.
Boss: AFO
Jailbreaker: Toxic Chainsaw, Dreadlock Jailbreaker
Nomu: Woman
Advisors: Sanctum & other Twice Advisors
Return: Rappa, Habit Headgear, Tesla, Victor
-
Ultimately, this was how I'd split them up! I tried to give each battlefield someone related to the League or who we have seen could be a credible match for the Heroes.
ALso saw fit to give an expalnation as to why some are here and others elsewhere...or not here at all.
Why isn't Re-Destro here?
Because I think the idea of Redestro going down fighting allow the PLF to escape is actually a good idea and could have lead to more development for his top brass, with the post-war showing how each of them are trying to carry on the organization's will. Geten's furious and preparing his Quirk more, Skeptic is actually training to defend himself and other better, Trumpet is channeling his inner Usopp and just lying to every straggler he finds to bolster their forces.
Why is the Shie Hassakai helping AFO?
Mutual benefit. The SH wants Overhaul back, AFO can free him if they win. Also, in Rappa's case, he just wants to brawl so he's imediately on board.
Why only Movie 2 villains on-board?
Because they're the only movie villains that are both in Japan, and not arrested internationally. I mean, I could have tried to incldue Wolfram and his dudes, if I wanted? But if I do ever make a pitch for a new Dark Deku Jailbreaker arc, I'd rather save him for that.
Aaaaaand, that's that?
Regardless, this is pretty much just a thought experiment on my part so hope you got some enjoyment from it!! Think I could have done any of these battlefields better?

Orpheus' 2nd Character Day Letter
If the purpose of the loan had to do with a clinic and hospital, that implies the loan was likely due to someone being ill or injured. For the wealthy obviously implies who the borrower was.
Considering this is Orpheus' letter, and we know the DeRoss couple was "wealthy" (based on the original Oletus Manor backstory, comments Alice makes, Burke and Bonbon's deductions, and Orpheus' tale, especially with how the massacre to some extent had to do with greed), the DeRoss couple were likely the borrowers. That and it specifically has the context of the time of the "incident" based on the Oletus Family massacre. This matches with the Borrower (likely Dennis, especially as the line about the borrower uses the word "him") being deceased, and his family also being deceased (his wife) or missing (Alice).
If Dennis was the borrower, it seems likely he acquired the loan for someone in his family, meaning the purpose of the loan was 1 of them. In Time of Reunion, 1 of the lines Orpheus hears talks about the mother's (Dennis' wife and Alice's mother) condition worsening. Ergo, she was who the loan was for.
This lines up with a page from the artbook, which actually discusses Dennis' wife's affliction:
Dear ◼︎︎
Your wife's lung cancer is getting worse again and you need to implement more advanced treatment.
Unless you pay for her medical care as soon as possible, we cannot do anything for her.
◼︎︎ Doctor, 1887
Then there's the question of the lender. Based on the mention of "advanced treatment", it's likely the loan was quite large and thus the lender must've been similarly wealthy, especially if even someone of the DeRoss couple's wealth couldn't afford it. Of course, someone we know that is wealthy and has ties to the DeRoss couple, my first thought is the Barriere family.
First to mind is Count Barriere, who we know is very wealthy, is tied to shady happenings, had a signature on the same page as Dennis, and we know he gives out loans based on the IOU owned by someone with the signature "D" that he wants Lily to reclaim. It's not guaranteed to be him though, not to mention the IOU Lily is after is still to be paid and is tied to "Mediterranean Development" and a copy of Orfeo, while the loan in this letter was "repaid 2 weeks after the tragedy".
We know it can't be Lily's father, Reger, but Reger was said to only be the 2nd son. So it's possible maybe the 1st son gave out this loan. The only reference to a Barriere that isn't confirmed to be Count Barriere is from Freddy's 4th letter, which references a "Keogh & Barriere law office". Though it may feel a bit odd if the co-partner for the law office referenced here is the one that has been imprisoned for so long. It's possible the 1st son isn't related to this law office, but he still could have given the loan.
Though it'd also be curious if the 1st son was tied to this law office and the lender for this loan considering Freddy, a financial advisor, in that case would be connected via both his 4th letter and his mention in Orpheus' 2nd letter.
There's also how Freddy's background mentions a "failed lawsuit" in his past. If Freddy is his the lender's lawyer, I wonder if this could be the "failed lawsuit" from Freddy's past (especially if it happened at least 5 years ago). He should still be his lawyer even if Freddy lost the lawsuit and couldn't prevent his client from being imprisoned. And if his client were a Barriere, maybe that could tie at least somewhat to why after this failed lawsuit Freddy's life seemed to decline after, based on after that case Freddy was said to be "toiling away at a menial job with a pathetic wage". With someone as high up as the Barriere family, it's possible he could've suffered some sort of punishment or something for being unable to prevent him from being imprisoned.
This is just a bunch of my current thoughts, so who knows what's right.
I do find it curious the loan was paid 2 weeks after the tragedy. I wonder if either someone paid it off for Dennis, or if maybe the manor was seized and used to pay it off, and thus potentially how it could then be bought by Manus, and then later bought by Orpheus.
As for the loan being signed 6 months before the massacre, I do admit I wonder if it's possible it is connected somehow someway to why the massacre happened at all (which I still wonder if Barriere helped cause).
Though if Dennis was wealthy, was he just having trouble paying for his wife's treatment because it was a very expensive treatment, or I wonder if people stealing from his manor (based on Bonbon's deduction 4 that implies Orpheus's parents, maybe helped by Orpheus himself or not, were taking "valuable items" from the manor due to their greed) was causing Dennis enough trouble that he was forced to ask for a loan rather than be able to pay himself. If so, I wonder if that was on purpose to pressure Dennis (to what end, I don't know. Why was it important for all of this to happen if so?), but maybe I'm thinking too hard again.
(Doing this at all because I enjoyed having an actually interesting letter for once, compared to what we're getting for people's 5th character days, enough to talk again. Will see how I continue to feel. Still taking it easy)

An alternate ending of Weak Hero (?) - (Donald lives)
A 'What if' ending that I thought long ago
(this is almost 10 months old post , I didn't know about Tumblr at that time so I Posted this on reddit lol, sorry guys I can't write so this is just something?)
I was looking forward for the epilogue episode hoping that we'd get spin offs but I see that's not the case. Most of us are quite disappointed with the ending and with such a great story like Weak hero, I think the reason is valid. So, as I can do nothing but imagine, here's a What if ending that I thought about -
(After Donald's Death , that guy never called Gray and Gray didn't meet Stephen) Wolf and Jimmy didn't find a suitable head for the UNION. So the rebuild of UNION never happened.Kingsley became depressed and got character development . He realised what he should have been Donald's friend not UNION advisor.
But he was suspicious about the truck thing. So he sent jimmy to investigate and he got to know that it was none other than Chungil Lee . Now he's gonna take revenge ofc . But through the process he gets to know that it was Myles Joo who told Chungil Lee that it would be the best to strike Donald Na when he's all alone at Han riverside.
Kingsley brings out all the dirt on Cheongang corporation Ltd and publises it online. And Cheongang corporation is vanished after Police investigation.
Kingsley knew that unlike Chungil,Myles had nothing to lose so he thought of killing him (as his life is all that he had) . But Myles calls Kingsley first. Myles meets Kingsley at a cafe Central Seoul .
There Myles tell him that Donald is alive. After that fight with Donald, Myles( remembered how Donald and he met and power of friendship theory) realised that he shouldn't have told Chungil Lee all that . But it was too late. That night he went to the hospital too but nobody actually noticed him as Union guys were not informed about it at first and Eunjang crew was looking after Gray . Meanwhile Myles got to know that Cheongang gang is after him as he's the only person who knows about the preparation of the truck incident and they don't want any evidence. So he had to stay underground.but he couldn't leave Donald there cause if Cheongang gets to know that he's not Dead, they might attack him again. So with a 'Criminal Doctor' Myles manages to fake Donald's Death.and Kingsley fainting when asked to close his eyes made the situation for them only better.
For a whole week after the funeral Donald was actually in the same hospital but in another floor another room. Once the whole "Donald's dead" news was everywhere , Myles moved him to a well-known hospital in Central Seoul and Donald's currently in Coma . Myles wanted to tell all these to Kingsley but he couldn't as he had to stay underground but now that Cheongang 's gone he's finally able to tell him.
Myles said that he will never cross path with any of the union members again and now all the responsibilities of Donald are on Kingsley.
Kingsley now found is hope again. This time he promised himself to be a better friend because - power of friendship theory . But also he is also worried about Donald getting caught once he wakes up . So he starts thinking about changing Donald's identity . So it will seem like that Donald Na died . And manages to find a "criminal lawyer'' with whom he plotted a case where Donald's abusive father planned the accident to take the money he got from olympiads just like what he did with his mom's insurance money . And as the police investigated the whole incident they found out that do not stayf father was indeed a thug guy who Had a lot of debt . And with all that under protection law Donald's name was finally changed .
When Donald woke up , Kingsley explained him everything. Donald managed to get in at a school in central Seoul. Both of them graduated high school and for the last time Donald sat for olympiad . This time too , gray and him both placed first. But Gray never got to know that it was Donald because he changed the name! And he was focused on something else. The third name in the list - Stephen Ahn .
That's right. Eugene Ben Alex Gerard everyone help to Gray to overcome the past and he did get better. Eugene told him to participate in the Olympiad . So , he did . Stephen on the other hand knew that it was the only way to reach out to Gray so he participated in the math Olympiads too and he intentionally left a question unattended so he could be the second and Gray would be the first. His plan worked and Gray managed to find stephen again. They reunited.
Kingsley and Donald both went to America as scholarship students and Donald eventually became a citizen there.and as he was a citizen he presented his college in the college level Olympiads (yes it is a thing) . And gray and Donald had to compete eachother again but in this competition there's a segment where you have to solve questions with your opponent so this time white mamba and the white lion would be solving maths problems together. Gray would be shocked to see someone just like Donald na wilth no tattoos and black hair (laser treatment and hair dye is the solution). Gray's insticts would tell him that it donald but he saw him die infront of his own eyes and there would be no proof . And it'll be the last question Donald gave to Gray which Gray could never ever solve.
#It's kinda cringe ik but anything for reviving beakjin#weak hero#weak hero webtoon#beakjin#Beakjin na#na baekjin#kingsley kwan#donald na#gray yeon#weak hero fic#weak hero manhwa

Teach Me, Maria-sensei! 4️⃣
Maria Lorraine is best known as the author of “Authoritarianism is Good when I Do It,” a sprawling tract which is supposedly about the relationship between philosophy, the creative arts, and imperialism, but also contains many odd tangents and suspiciously specific complaints. Maria is second-best known for ‘the Turk speech,’ in which she argued at a Poster’s Union meeting that “if there is, hypothetically, such a thing as a ‘master race’ or a people chosen by god, it would objectively have to be the Turks.” The meeting ended in a brawl that left several posters hospitalized. “If there is, hypothetically, such a thing as x” lives on as a popular meme to indicate an absurd or overly combative argument.
+++++
Maria Lorraine: Do you want to know the difference between Eastern and Western philosophy, Sunny?
President Sunny Roosevelt: Honestly, not really, but I’ve interrupted you enough already so I’ll let you have this one.
Maria: The origins of Western philosophy are found in the symposia, ancient Greek parties which revolved around wine, conversation, and sex, while the origins of Eastern philosophy are found in the shi, a class of itinerant advisors who would travel from region to region offering their services to local rulers and ministers, and writing treatises to show their administrative expertise. In other words, the origin of Eastern philosophy is the just and proper administration of a state, while the origin of Western philosophy is drunken pederasty.
Sunny: Hey, maybe both sides have a point.
Maria: Now, are you at all familiar with Taoism?
Sunny: Sure. You’ve got your Yin, and you’ve got your Yang, and they’re like opposites, right? Night and day, hot and cold, all that good stuff. And everything’s made up of Yin and Yang, and they’re always turning into each other, or something like that.
Maria: That is the popular perception - and it’s pronounced yang, rhymes with song.
Sunny: Correcting my pronunciation is such a - Wait, what does all that have to do with running a state?
Maria: Oh, you’re actually paying attention. As I said, that is the popular understanding of Taoism, but the truth is deeper - Taoism is not mere metaphysics, but a layered and intricate metaphor for the administrator’s craft. It is something one can ponder for a lifetime and not exhaust even a fraction of its implications. Two forces, so diametrically opposed that they cannot exist without the other, a syzygy…
Sunny: You’re making that up. No way is that a real word.
Maria: Night and day, hot and cold, male and female… urban and rural, centralized and decentralized, core and periphery. Do you see what I’m getting at?
Sunny: [nods] Not even a little.
Maria: Let me put it this way. Rural people complain about the rootless superficiality of the urban people, and urban people complain about the obstreperous traditionalism of the rural people. Both seek to shape the other to be more like themselves, but they are both products of their context. Rural areas exist because resource industries - logging, mining, agriculture - are spread out by their - pardon the pun - by their very nature, while the development and production of consumer goods and services requires factories and offices which leads to urbanization. The existence of one depends on the other, and it is that dichotomy which allows society to function. Theoretically.
Sunny: Ahhh, now I see. Urban and rural are like a siggy-ziggy.
Maria: Syzygy.
Sunny: Why does that matter, though?
Maria: Why does it matter? Half the country is one big cyberpunk megapole and the other half is a neo-feudal wasteland. The ideological conflict between these two extremes will be a defining challenge of your tenure. It…
Sunny: No, I mean why does it matter that I properly pronounce your stupid made up words?
Maria: Because all words are made up, and ‘syzygy’ is a lot faster than saying ‘a pair of forces which are diametrically opposed and yet interconnected because of their opposition,’ and understanding established terminology means you can actually engage with…
Sunny: Why not call it a beep-boop?
Maria: What?
Sunny: If you just need a word you can use to refer to the concept, why not call it a beep-boop? [Peace sign] Beep-boop!
Maria: Cease this whimsy, it sickens me physically.
Sunny: Beep-boop!

I'm bored, I wanna talk about my Sonic Future Headcanons.
So, there are two potential future timelines in my headcanon. At some point in the near future after the events of (insert recent installment here), a destructive World Ending Threat arrives and Sonic and Eggman will team up in order to stop.
Timeline A:
In Timeline A, Eggman sacrifices himself to stop this threat.
Most of the stories set in this timeline have the characters in their late 20's to early 30's.
Sonic and Amy end up together and get married. They have a one kid and end up adopting another.
Tails ended up becoming a world-renowned scientist and the CEO of his own robotics company. He's joined by Orbot and Cubot who, in contrast to how they acted around Eggman, serve as generally helpful advisors for Tails.
Knuckles and Rouge started a relationship after Eggman's death, but it eventually fizzled out. Rouge is currently a museum curator, and Knuckles is still on Angel Island which he's converted into a new home for refugees who lost their homes to Eggman.
Sonic took Sage under his wing after Eggman's death. Sage is currently a nurse at a hospital, and she remains on good terms with Sonic. Metal Sonic on the other hand took over the apparatus of the Eggman Empire and reformed it into the Metal Empire which still threatens the world.
Shadow is still doing typical Shadow things.
Tangle is still an adventurer and also serves as a mentor figure for the next generation of Heroes. She can even be married to Whisper if you fancy that sort of thing. Lanolin's also still around and she's currently the Restoration's General Secretary.
Silver returned to his future and Blaze returned to her own dimension.
Timeline B:
In Timeline B, it's Sonic who sacrifices himself instead of Eggman and this obviously changes things.
Most of the stories here involve the cast in their early to mid 20's.
After Sonic's death, Eggman decided to disavow his evil ways and retired to an isolated log cabin in the woods to become a mere carpenter. Sage had some initial difficulty coming to terms with Eggman's shift towards, well neutrality really, but eventually accepted it. Metal Sonic still took over the Eggman Empire.
Amy was understandably heartbroken by Sonic's death and was inconsolably sad for a while. Though she was eventually able to come to terms with her grief, she lost a bit of her chipper attitude and a part of her still hasn't gotten over Sonic. While Amy isn't dating anyone currently, she and Blaze have developed romantic feelings for each other.
Tails is generally the same as Timeline A but arguably with some of his personality changed by Sonic's death and Orbot and Cubot stuck with Eggman.
Knuckles and Rouge still started a relationship, but the death of Sonic ended up bringing them closer together. They got married and have already had their first kid, a daughter.
Everyone else is generally the same as in Timeline A though.

Pair of Advisor (Anime-Style) Asks
For @shockersalvage and @plf-advisor-stan, with thanks for your patience. I've got another ask from salvage coming down the pipe shortly, but it developed a rant on me that I want to give the space of a dedicated post, whereas these two covered quite similar ground!
First up!
I went and looked up the scene out of curiosity, mostly to hear what his voice sounds like in advance of the hospital stuff, and wow that is not the voice I would have gone with; it sounds way too old. I realize the advisors are all supposed to be heads of bases and such, but it’s very clear from their designs that a number of them are still rather young people, and I feel quite strongly that Scarecrow should have been one of them, the better to have him, Spinner and Shouji all fighting for control of the crowd at the hospital, all thinking about and representing different visions for the future.
(Putting the rest of this under a cut, because between the two of them, they got fairly rambly, and also the second one has a bunch of pictures.)
Getting past my gut response there, the pep talk framing is a little strange, given the fact that he’s the second-ranked behind Nimble, so it’s pretty weird for her to be in need of a pep talk from him. On the other hand, given the way the dialogue flows, I would not have to strain myself to imagine that Nimble is rolling her eyes a bit to herself at Scarecrow reiterating all this stuff they already know and replaying a message they’ve already heard half a dozen times because he likes to hear himself talk and also feel validated by the higher-ups. XD
(Man, I also still dislike the choice for Skeptic’s voice actor—or if not the actor himself, at least the emotional range they’ve directed him to play the character in. Needs to be 300% more spastic-sounding.)
As to the colors….yeesh. Scarecrow’s pretty straightforward—I expect I’ll have more opinions once we see him unmasked and I can check his head-stripes and his scar. The birds-egg blue for Cementoss’s cousin is at least eye-catching, and probably any color they chose would look pretty strange, given his appearance! I do like that they maintain his somewhat uncertain, pensive expressions (insomuch as those can be read off of him in the manga). I'll have one other observation to make about him (his wildly inconsistent height) which I'll cover in the next ask.
Nimble, though. MAN, if I could sit down and have a chat with whoever in the BNHA production staff is so unbelievably enamored with blue-eyed blonde women…… Why would you look at her strange paper-strip hair and think, “Yeah, obviously yellow-blonde is the right color for this. And give her purple-gray eyes, which is far enough from blue for plausible deniability. And the blocky dude can be a shade of blue chiefly associated with blue cotton candy, but The Girl definitely needs to have a skin tone indistinguishable from the palest and most conventionally attractive female characters in the show. Oh, and of course make her shirt pink.”
Just yeesh.
As to lumping in The Question, it’s a pretty strange choice to make, given the explicit dialogue being played there about how all three of Spinner’s advisors—obvious heteromorphs, the lot of them—were placed in his regiment Because Of Who They Are. The group shot the anime uses seems to mostly understand that,[1] given the anime-original designs of the rest of the people in the shot, but The Question is not a clear heteromorph; he pretty much just looks like an alternate dimension Mr. Compress. Kind of feels like the animators just wanted to minimize the amount of designs they had to come up with, so they grabbed the only one of the other Support Regiment advisors who could feasibly be a heteromorph and threw him in there, even though including him kind of misses the point—that it’s only Spinner’s underlings who are specifically and universally heteromorphic, not the entirety of the regiment he co-leads with Mr. C. Which we know because neither Galvanize, Band Jacket Guy nor even The Question visibly qualify as Obvious Heteromorphs the same way all three of Spinner’s advisors do.
1: Mostly. There’s a Hero-looking gal whose closest thing resembling a non-baseline feature is an unusually squared-off chin, which mostly comes off as mild cartoony caricature rather than a truly divergent facial structure. There’s also a bowl cut dude two over from her who would need to have some truly bizarre eyes hiding under that hairline to make him anything other than baseline as all get-out.
Anyway, I see between this and the ask below that the anime’s made a few calls about adding them in where the manga never indicated their presence! I wonder if that means it will also try to show more of them arrested when the anime inevitably gets to the tiresome scenes of the police talking about how they’re for-sure-definitely wiping things up at their designated battlefields? Most of that stuff is, I think, just floating talk bubbles in the manga, but the anime will have to kill several seconds of time for voice actors to read those lines, and I think pretty often will try to fill that space with actual illustration of what’s being talked about, which Horikoshi only does when he’s in full montage mode, seldom when he’s in active/ongoing action. Having more advisors available increases the number of Known Faces the animators can use for such filler shots.
While I forever crave more about them (more on that shortly), I definitely don’t relish the anime’s increased screentime being all A) still-frames of advisors when their group is being talked about in broad terms or B) anime-original shots of them being arrested!
Thanks for the ask, and I should have the other one up before the day's out!
---
Second up!
Also included in the ask were the following screenshots!
I gave my general opinions on the anime-mode advisors in the answer above but ohhhh my heavens, the sizing is so funny. So, so funny. A lot of the issue is probably that Horikoshi is not very consistent either, of course, but wow they weren’t even trying to keep #3 consistent there, were they?
For some comparison purposes, here’s Scarecrow’s first panel where you can really, fairly judge his height:
A true short king. Smolest of boys and realest of meowmeows. Scarecrow they could never make me hate you.
Look at him. Mentally try to move him back to where he’d be standing directly next to Hose Face. He’s, what, maybe four feet tall? No wonder he has to stand on top of a tall building to give his speech.
Then look at this one, where he’s of a very comparable height to Koda (height: 6’1”):
Then these two, where Horikoshi can't decide whether he's a little shorter or a little taller than Nimble, but certainly over 4’0”!:
So he’s a bit all over the place—and that’s hardly unique to him; Horikoshi draws pretty wildly inconsistent heights even amongst his main cast.
But man, #3 is on a different level even from that.
Let’s expand the frame on that last picture, shall we?
Now, when I had looked at this shot in the past, I had mainly been focused on the faces of the characters in it, particularly Bindi the Younger because I was so pleased to see she’d escaped her even-more-ignominious-than-Piercings-Dude no-hit wipeout against Edgeshot. I hadn’t paid a great deal of attention to Not!Cementoss save to note that he was pretty big. Like, wow, look how tall he is when he’s standing there behind Scarecrow’s shoulder!
But of course, if you look closer, he’s not standing behind Scarecrow’s shoulder. He’s standing in the background, with probably at least three rows of people standing, roughly, between him and the people in front. It’s given away by the silhouetted black heads of the people who are actually standing right in front of him:
Like, not only do those presumably-grown men not quite come all the way up to his shoulder, the width of them compared to him is just cartoonishly shrimpy. The guy is a giant, clearly built on a scale taller and heavier than any normal human. Wow!
…And then of course you go back to this shot and just have to shake your head.
Still, even if his height’s pretty inconsistent, his width is less so. He’s in profile in the shot above, but compare this one, from the advisors’ introductory spread:
He’s taller than The Question, if not by a monumental degree, but even if he were facing the camera directly, his cube-shaped head would still be 2-3x wider than The Question’s.
So it’s a shame that, as your screenshots show, on top of his height being much reduced the anime can’t even manage to keep his width intact. Sad.
Thanks for the ask!

Understanding The Sudden Rise of Type 2 Diabetes In Children
The Metabolic Disorder Was Long Known as a Disease of Adulthood. Now, It’s Spiking in Kids and Teens, With Worrisome Consequences.
— By Charlotte Huff | July 31, 2024
The appearance of type 2 diabetes in children and teens puzzled physicians from the start. Fida Bacha recalls working as a pediatric endocrinology fellow in Pittsburgh shortly after 2000 when young, overweight and obese patients began to arrive at the clinic, some describing increased thirst, more frequent trips to the bathroom and other symptoms of what was then called adult-onset diabetes.
“It was a new realization that we are dealing with a disease that used to be only an adult disease that is now becoming a disease of childhood,” says Bacha, who practices at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.
More than two decades later, physicians and researchers are still trying to unravel what’s driving the emergence and proliferation of youth-onset disease, particularly among marginalized communities including Hispanics/Latinos. The increasing prevalence of obesity among young people is clearly one contributor, but researchers are also scrutinizing the potential influence of other lifestyle and environmental factors — everything from exposure to chronic stress and air pollution to sugar-rich diets. Along with physiological factors, such as where they carry excess fat, youths from lower socioeconomic levels may be vulnerable due to aspects of daily life beyond their control, such as more limited access to healthy food and opportunities to safely exercise in less-polluted neighborhoods.
As researchers try to sort out the interplay among genetics, metabolic factors and environmental influences in Hispanic and other populations, their goal is to answer this key question: Why do some seemingly at-risk adolescents progress to diabetes while others do not?
Long-term, the challenges and health stakes are significant. When type 2 diabetes first emerged in youths, clinicians initially thought its progression would mirror that in adults and thus could be treated accordingly. That hasn’t panned out, says Barbara Linder, a pediatric endocrinologist and senior advisor for childhood diabetes research at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). For instance, researchers have determined that metformin, a commonly prescribed oral antidiabetic medication in adults, doesn’t work as well in young people.
“We know that the disease is very aggressive in youth and very difficult to treat,” Linder says. “So it’s really imperative that we develop effective approaches to prevention. And to do this we obviously need to be able to effectively identify which youth are at the highest risk.”
Even with treatment, young people develop other medical problems related to diabetes faster than adults, according to a study that followed 500 youths, more than one-third of them Hispanic. Sixty percent developed at least one complication within about 15 years after diagnosis, when just in their 20s.
“It’s really alarming,” says Luisa Rodriguez, a pediatric endocrinologist who studies type 2 diabetes and obesity in children at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. For every 10 adolescents with youth-onset diabetes, she points out, “six of them, within a decade span, are going to develop a significant comorbidity that will highly impact their lifespan and quality of life.”
Complications of diabetes appear more quickly in young people than in older adults. Researchers studied 500 overweight adolescents, aged 10 to 17, who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Within 15 years of their diagnosis, 60 percent of the participants had developed at least one medical complication of diabetes, and 28 percent had developed two or more.
Insulin Resistance
In type 2 diabetes, the body struggles to use insulin effectively. This vital hormone, made by beta cells in the pancreas, helps glucose in the bloodstream enter cells in muscle, fat and the liver, where it’s used for energy. But sometimes those cells gradually lose their ability to respond to insulin, forcing the beta cells to pump out more and more of it. If the beta cells can’t keep up, blood glucose levels will begin to rise, leading to a diagnosis of prediabetes and, eventually, diabetes.
In the past, type 2 diabetes typically didn’t arise until well into adulthood. But now, cases in US youths ages 10 to 19 are rising fast. Since 2002-2003, overall diagnoses have doubled from 9 per 100,000 youths to 17.9 per 100,000 in 2017-2018, particularly among Asians, Pacific Islanders, Blacks and Hispanics. If those rising rates persist, the number of type 2 diabetes cases in young people is projected to skyrocket from 28,000 in 2017 to 220,000 by 2060.
Various factors have been linked to insulin resistance in childhood or adolescence, including obesity, inactivity and genetics, according to a review of the causes of type 2 diabetes in youths published in the 2022 Annual Review of Medicine. The disease tends to run in families regardless of race or ethnicity, which suggests that genes matter. Among US Hispanics, adults of Mexican or Puerto Rican heritage are most likely to be diagnosed, followed by Central and South Americans and Cubans.
Obesity is also a contributing factor: Slightly more than one-fourth of Hispanic youths are obese, a higher percentage than for any other major racial or ethnic group. Children also are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if their mother has the disease or developed gestational diabetes during pregnancy. One theory is that fetal exposure to maternal diabetes while in the womb can spur metabolic changes following birth.
Puberty is also highly influential — most cases are diagnosed after its onset. During puberty, youths temporarily experience insulin resistance, due in large part to an increase in hormones, Linder says. Most youths offset that transient resistance by secreting more insulin, she says. But for reasons that are still unclear, a subpopulation of adolescents does not. “When they’re faced with this stress test of puberty, they can’t increase their insulin secretion enough to compensate,” Linder says. “And that’s probably why they develop type 2 diabetes.”
One analysis, which looked at type 2 diabetes trends from 2002 to 2018, identified the peak age for diagnosis as 16 years in boys and girls. The sole exception involved Black youths, in whom diagnoses peaked at 13 years, and possibly earlier among Black girls, which may be linked to an earlier start of menstruation.
American Diabetes Association guidelines recommend that clinicians screen overweight or obese youths for the disease starting at age 10 or once puberty starts, whichever is earlier, if they have one or more risk factors. These include a family history of the disease, signs of insulin resistance or affiliation with certain racial/ethnic groups, including Hispanic/Latino.
During checkups, clinicians can look for a visible sign of insulin resistance, an associated skin condition called acanthosis nigricans, says Paulina Cruz Bravo, a physician and diabetes researcher at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The skin changes tend to appear in the neck area or along folds in the skin, including in the armpits and on the elbows and knees, she says. “The top layer of the skin gets thickened. It’s described as a velvety appearance of the skin — it’s darker compared to the skin in other places.”
The thickened, darker, velvety skin shown here, known as acanthosis nigricans, is a potential warning sign of developing type 2 diabetes. The condition is likely to appear on the neck, elbows, knees and other areas where the skin folds. People who notice acanthosis nigricans on themselves or their children should bring it to a doctor’s attention. Credit: S. Dulebohn/Statpearls 2024
Where an adolescent carries any excess pounds also matters, as insulin resistance has been associated with a type of fat called visceral fat, says Alaina Vidmar, a pediatric endocrinologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Unlike the more common type of fat, called subcutaneous and felt by pinching around the waistline, visceral fat surrounds the liver and other vital organs, increasing the risk for type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and other conditions.
“You really need the liver to process glucose to be able to utilize your insulin well,” Vidmar says. “And if it is full of fat, you are unable to do that.” Fatty liver disease, which has been associated both with obesity and type 2 diabetes, is most common in Hispanic adults, followed by white adults and Black adults, according to a meta-analysis looking at 34 studies.
Imaging scans would be the ideal way to identify the extent and location of visceral fat in adolescents, Vidmar says. But given that routine scanning would be costly, clinicians can instead measure an adolescent’s waist circumference, “a great surrogate marker,” she says.
Diabetes risk depends not just on how much fat you carry, but where you carry it. People with an “apple” body shape, with much of their fat in the abdomen, are at higher risk of diabetes than those with a “pear” body shape, who carry their fat under the skin, especially on the hips.
Still, obesity accounts for only a portion of the type 2 risk profile, reflecting the complexities involved in understanding the pathophysiology of youth-onset disease. Roughly one-fourth of youths with type 2 diabetes are not obese, according to a meta-analysis published in 2022 in JAMA Network Open. Asian youths are least likely to be obese; roughly one-third don’t meet the criteria for obesity.
Moreover, while obesity and insulin resistance boost the risk of developing diabetes, those factors alone don’t predict whether an adolescent is eventually diagnosed with the disease, according to the authors of the Annual Review of Medicine overview. Instead, they point to the role of impaired beta cell function.
In one study involving 699 youths with type 2 diabetes, the standard antidiabetic drug metformin controlled blood glucose levels in only about half the participants. (The medication was least effective among Black youths, for reasons that are unclear, according to the researchers.) Another analysis of the same study population identified a 20 percent to 35 percent decline in beta function each year in diabetic youths, compared with prior studies showing about a 7 percent to 11 percent annual decline in diabetic adults.
“What we see in the youth is that beta cell function fails very rapidly,” Linder says, adding that the beta cell decline tends to correlate with the lack of response to metformin.
It’s unknown whether specific racial or ethnic groups are more vulnerable to loss of beta cell function, says Linder, who hopes that a new large-scale NIDDK study launching this summer will identify any such physiological and other differences among populations. The study, called Discovery of Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in Youth Consortium, aims to enroll 3,600 overweight or obese adolescent boys and girls, 36 percent of them Hispanic. Bacha and other investigators on the project plan to follow the youths through puberty, looking at genetic and physiological markers such as insulin resistance and beta cell function. Their goal is to track who develops type 2 diabetes and what factors precipitate the disease.
In addition, researchers will learn about the participants’ mental health, lifestyles and social determinants of health, Linder says. To that end, families will be asked to share details about nutrition, physical activity and sleep, as well as food insecurity, exposure to racism and other stressors.
“Stress induces certain hormones that antagonize insulin, so they create more insulin resistance,” Linder says. “Stress also is associated with chronic inflammation in the body, which affects the ability of the body to respond normally.”
Young people experience many of the risk factors that predispose people to type 2 diabetes, such as prenatal exposures, junk food, sedentary lifestyles and high levels of stress.
Zooming in on Risk Factors in Hispanic Kids
Already, researchers who have studied at-risk Hispanic youths and their families have begun to flesh out environmental and other influences rooted in daily life that can boost the likelihood of obesity or diabetes. Michael Goran, a child obesity researcher at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, has led a research project called the Study of Latino Adolescents at Risk (SOLAR), which tracked 328 Hispanic/Latino youths considered at highest risk of youth-onset diabetes based on their body mass index and family history of the disease. The participants, recruited in two waves between 2000 and 2015, completed health questionnaires and underwent annual exams, including imaging scans and other measurements.
One analysis found that Hispanic youths who lived in neighborhoods with higher levels of air pollution were more likely to experience a breakdown in beta cell function. “Which we weren’t necessarily expecting — we don’t know the mechanism of that,” says Goran, who coauthored a close look at pediatric insulin resistance in the 2005 Annual Review of Nutrition.
In more recent years, he’s turned his attention to studying nutrition shortly after birth, with a focus on infant formulas that contain corn syrup. Those formulas are more likely to spike blood sugar than are lactose-based formulas, he says. “If you’re spiking blood glucose with corn syrup in babies,” he says, “you can see how that would be problematic for long-term control of blood sugars.”
In one study, Goran and colleagues looked at obesity trends in 15,246 children who received formula through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Babies who consumed any formula with corn syrup were 10 percent more likely to be obese by age 2 than babies who didn’t. Nearly 90 percent of the study’s participants were Hispanic.
In other research, epidemiologist Carmen Isasi of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York helped lead the Study of Latinos (SOL) Youth study, which delved into the extent to which a child’s family circumstances contribute to obesity and metabolic changes that may boost risk of youth-onset diabetes. Isasi and colleagues found chronic stress to be pervasive. Three-quarters of parents and caregivers reported stress and 29 percent detailed three or more stressors related to health, work or relationships. The higher the number of parental stressors, the more likely the child was to be obese.
Isasi also has looked at the relationship between food insecurity and metabolic health. Hispanic youths raised in households with the highest levels of food insecurity had significantly worse metabolic results, including elevated blood glucose and triglycerides, a type of cholesterol. Families dealing with food insecurity, Isasi says, probably have a lower-quality diet and skimp on costlier protein and fresh produce.
Preventing diabetes has proved challenging. A review paper looking at diet-related and other lifestyle initiatives targeting Hispanic youths found few studies to date that have shown improvements in body mass index or blood glucose levels.
Adolescents of lower socioeconomic status may also shoulder responsibilities that can undercut efforts to stay healthy, says Erica Soltero, a behavioral scientist at Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine, who works with Hispanic youths. For instance, older teens may struggle to attend an exercise class if they have an after-school job or must pick up younger siblings or start dinner. Technology, Soltero says, may be a better way to reach busy Hispanic teens; she’s piloting a study that will provide text-based lifestyle guidance to Hispanic teens with obesity.
Approved medication options remain limited for children and teens. If metformin doesn’t work, the alternative is insulin, and parents may resist giving injections because of the difficulties involved, Rodriguez says. She’s involved with an ongoing study in youths with type 2 diabetes to study the effectiveness of oral semaglutide, one of the newer diabetes drugs that also has achieved notable weight loss. Rodriguez estimates the results will be available by 2026.
The new NIDDK study won’t assess medication treatments, as it’s an observational study. But researchers involved are bullish that study-related insights could lead to better prevention and treatment approaches. “If someone is predisposed to beta cell dysfunction, should we be much more aggressive in treating their overweight/obesity,” Bacha says, “so that this beta cell function is preserved for a longer period of time?” Doctors could, for example, decide to start treatment earlier, she says.
Neither are researchers like Soltero deterred by the long-standing difficulties involved with revamping lifestyle habits. Soltero, who has worked with overweight and obese Hispanic adolescents to improve exercise and make dietary changes, describes them as often highly motivated given the damage they’ve seen the disease inflict on their own families.
“A lot of times they’ll have a touch point with a relative who’s on dialysis and maybe had a digit amputated,” Soltero says. Or “they’ll say, ‘I don’t want to prick myself every day like my Uncle So-and-So.’ Or ‘I don’t want to be on medicine for the rest of my life like my grandma.’ ”

I JUST finished reading all your metas they're very helpful to remember naruto and their infamous badly written females (I think they're fine) because you showed that they are great but people purposefully ignore them. Your boruto metas are good too to catch up with it although I'm not interested. The best one is undoubtedly the jobs of each female and their growth. Sakura is just great! Definitely not the little weak kunoichi anymore! But can I ask if you would change anything from it? Just went through your blog and you're not at all content with the stuff they do. What would you change?
Thank you so much for reading. I really enjoy breaking down Naruto stuff related to hierarchy and world building, especially with their female characters.
And you're most definitely right: I'm not 100% happy with the direction of the characters and I think their abilities are not exploited the way they should be. They're not being pushed to their limits and they're not being challenged. I've already answered this question before so I'll repeat it in more detail. I'm gonna add more things because why not, I think it's interesting to explore world building when Boruto doesn't.
I will include Sakura Haruno/Uchiha, Hanabi Hyūga, Temari Nara, Shizune, Ino Yamanaka, Karui Akimichi, Hinata Uzumaki/Hyūga, Tenten and Tsunade.
The actual roles they complete for Konoha right now are compiled here. Also I will use examples from Konoha's Organization System here.
⇛ Sakura Uchiha:
Head of Konoha's Medical Department (hierarchy)
Director of Konoha Hospital (founder and supervisor of her Children's Therapy Centers in the 5 nations).
Doctor and in the forefront of research development of medical techniques and creation of medicines.
Mentor for future Konoha Hospital staff in any area.
Member of the Cryptanalysis Team and Analytical Department
Active jōnin.
In the Shinobi Union she'd become the Captain of the Medical and Logistic Support Division of the Shinobi Union.
- Wouldn't change a lot of stuff she already carries the entire Medical Department and its branches so it looks like she has a lot on her plate but it's because the department is big. She's just participates in every major branch of her department but her main role is to lead and heal. Still, being a pillar of the village means she participates in village decisions.
- Mainly the Head of the Medical Department would be simply hierarchical since it's just for Summits between the Daimyō, Hokage and advisors, Chief of ANBU and Jōnin Commander. It's nothing but a title in the hierarchy of the Fire Country because anything related to funds for medicine will be discussed with her.
- Otherwise, Konoha Hospital is the actual medical center of the village. She'd spend the day in her office taking command by leading medics and dispatching medical teams. Included as a medical branch and since she founded the clinics in other nations, even if they all have their own supervisors, Sakura would still oversee them since she's like the CEO. Yearly meetings with the other village's Medical Departments is how she keeps track of them.
- I can't have her directing the medical branch without being a doctor herself. Instead of ordinary patients, Sakura would work on the most difficult cases and challenge her skills and knowledge, and perform surgeries of the highest level.
- Although I enjoy her teaching genin at the hospital, I think Sakura should focus on teaching her own staff in the high-advanced medical skills and knowledge required to work in the hospital, so the training of future researchers and scientists. Teaching genin isn't really on her level, I think she's beyond telling kids how to control their chakra. This is a course she imparts once a year.
- Just like it was depicted in the manga and then continued in novels, Sakura would still be a member of the Cryptanalysis Team or the Analytical Department with Shikamaru and Shiho. This is occasionally.
- The Shinobi Union is the successor of the Allied Shinobi Forces in canon and it's something that gets brought up from time to time, so my idea was to make the jōnins (because they're military leaders) become the captains of one division in case of War and Sakura would succeed Shizune.
- The nature of Sakura's jōnin missions would be mainly to take down several enemies, hunting missing-nin and humanitarian or health emergencies in other countries with a group of tokubetsu jōnin.
-
⇛ Temari Nara:
Ambassador/Coordinator between Sunagakure and Konohagakure.
Commander of the Hokage Guard Platoon.
Chūnin Exams Jury in deciding who passes or not.
Active jōnin.
In the Shinobi Union she'd become the Captain of the Long-range Division.
- Overall Temari remains unchanged but I would use her skills in teams she has a lot of experience on and work from there.
- I know she's already an Ambassador but with the current technology that imitates hiden ninjutsu, senses automatically, performs telepathy, etc. Basically: Naruto and Gaara can speak through facetime it's a practice since the W4r and it's practiced even now in the story. My view is be that Temari would host Gaara in her home (like ch.700), guard him, advise both parties (Konoha and Suna) about matters, diplomatic affairs would be something she would handle, she would attend Gokage Summits. Basically, every single detail about both villages would go through her at all times.
- She has experience as Gaara's bodyguard, something she dedicated many of her shinobi years to. Since the Hokage Guard Platoon is something that has been rescued in novels, I don't think that anyone is better to lead bodyguards than her. Every time the Hokage leaves on a diplomatic mission, Temari goes with them.
- Rather than continue her labor as Chūnin Exams proctor, I think that she's more suited to be a judge signaling her seniority and experience in partaking in this competition. Alongside the Hokage and daimyō, Temari would be part of a table of judges who would choose who becomes a chūnin and who needs reexamination. They happen once or twice a year.
- Just like Sakura, a jōnin like Temari would lead that military division. Knowing she's among the best (if not the best) long-range user along with her experience and her natural leadership skills, she's the best candidate to succeed Gaara in the Fifth Division.
- She would be on missions all the time. The nature of her jōnin missions would be mainly to take down several enemies and missions involving the safety of Konoha like capturing and hunting missing-nin and espionage.
-
⇛ Hanabi Hyūga:
Head of the Hyūga Clan.
Leader/member of the Konoha Barrier Team.
Team 15 instructor.
Active jōnin.
In the Shinobi Union she'd become the Captain of the Close-range Division.
- I didn't change much compared to what's been shown so far, but I'd expand her roles so much more to actually challenge her innate skills.
- I had my doubts with adding Clan Head because it isn't really a job, they only represent the clan. Although one thing that makes them different is that the head is a member of the main branch so it's their responsibility to pass down techniques from the main branch. It's time Hiashi retires and Hanabi takes on the role she's been preparing for since she was very little.
- I also had my doubts about making her part of the Barrier Team and although I added it because I think it's a good idea, it'd fit better if the manga had chosen another path for this team but not with the way it's been presented. Hanabi has 360º and long range vision for sensing and the four random ninja with telepathy helmets can contact her if something happens plus she can anticipate more upcoming danger. However, I don't think a team that has been rebranded as automated with a database of chakra prints, chakra transmission devices to communicate and an obsolete Interception Team needs a leader (they just notify Sasuke and Naruto and they deal with enemies). They don't need someone to tell them what to do when they don't do anything but alert their leader of danger who will then ask if the new chakra is in the database and then contact the Hokage. First, they won't fight it themselves and second, wasting time to tell someone else who will ask questions the HQ has before their eyes is pointless. I personally don't see the point of having a spokesperson or members other than HQ, they waste time.
- I kept her genin team but to me Hanabi should be used as a ninja rather than instructor so she would spend most of her time going on missions. On one hand by leading a genin team she gains experience for her future role of passing down techniques within her clan, but the overall leadership skills come from becoming a chūnin so I have mixed feelings.
- Same as Sakura and Temari, Hanabi is a jōnin and a great close-range fighter so I don't see any other close-range better for this role than her to succeed Kitsuchi.
- The nature of her jōnin missions would be mainly taking down several enemies, a lot of surveillance with intel gathering and infiltration.
-
⇛ Shizune:
Hokage's coordinator/assistant.
Deputy Director of Konoha Hospital.
Doctor.
Teacher of medical ninjutsu for field medical-nin on regular teams.
Jōnin team leader of some medical teams that Sakura dispatches.
- Although overall she stays the same, I think Shizune is one of those misused characters that can shine with good writing.
- Kishimoto originally made her keep her job as the Hokage's assistant in ch.700 and Gaiden but Boruto somehow removed it, so I rescued it with a different approach. She'd be second to Shikamaru and her role would be more about paperwork in coordinating with the other Konoha departments.
- She's already depicted as second in command in Konoha Hospital apparently. Since Sakura has other responsibilities in her department or when she's on missions and doing other political stuff, Shizune is a great help and she'd be taking over Konoha Hospital when the Director is out.
- Shizune has always been second to Tsunade, even when Sakura surpassed both. Her responsibility is to contribute to Konoha's Medical Department as its senior and experienced doctor. She's a referent and model doctor in the hospital taking care of many cases.
- Instead of Sakura teaching genin, Shizune would teach first aid in the Ninja Academy and basic medical ninjutsu in Konoha Hospital for genin that want to become the healers of their team.
- I can't believe they'd waste a jōnin when Konoha only has a handful, so she'd still go on missions. The nature of her jōnin missions would be keeping her duties in medical teams for emergencies and diplomaticy.
-
⇛ Ino Yamanaka:
Florist of the Yamanaka flower shop.
Leader or member of the Analysis Unit.
Teacher of Ikebana in the Ninja Academy.
Active chūnin.
- The writing destroyed the Yamanaka Clan so I decided to rescue it and make Ino an actually useful ninja. The Barrier Team isn't measuring up to her because she doesn't stand out and her skills are already generic in a team with telepathy helmets and automatic sensing. Her sensing is really awful and limited to her close surroundings, that's why she takes advantage of birds for surveillance so I don't know why she wrote her leading a team when her sensing equals a machine it's completely pointless. Like I said earlier she's nothing more than a mediator and contacting her wastes a lot of time if the only thing she'll do is ask HQ questions and tell the Hokage or follow Shikamaru's orders. She can be more useful than responding to a machine.
- The flowershop stays of course and it's where she spends the days at so it's difficult to place her somewhere else. Her family helps her sometimes too.
- Her path was to become an interrogator like her father, even though she never trained or showed interest in it other than keeping Ino-Shika-Cho traditions, otherwise I don't know what she could do since missions with her teammates are out of the question with Shikamaru being the busiest man in the village. Her clan has only 2 members: Her and and Santa Yamanaka. The former is a jōnin probably set on other quests or killed in action we don't know. Leading or being a member of the Analysis Team (with Aoba Yamashiro who is her senpai in the job being the leader she can learn and take advice from) is the most logical outcome for her ninja career. Interrogating is only in cases where Ibiki is unsuccessful with his T&I methods.
- This is the most misused thing mentioned in the manga but teacher of Ikebana (flower arrangement) for little kunoichi like those kunoichi classes in the Academy suits her, she has great memories with Sakura there too. She has a history with flowers there's no one better.
- The nature of her chūnin missions would be mainly to gather intelligence with a team of her own.
⇛ Karui Akimichi:
Ambassador/Coordinator between Kirigakure and Konohagakure.
Member of the Hokage Guard Platoon.
Active chūnin or tokubetsu jōnin.
- Karui is the prime example of a wasted character. She's great and she can be written to contribute to Konoha following the writing in the og story. There's so much she can do.
- She presents the same problem as Temari being the Ambassador and it's technology. So instead the follow-up would be the same: host Darui in her home, guard him, advise both parties (Konoha and Kiri) about matters, diplomatic affairs would be something she would handle, she would attend Gokage Summits. Basically, every single detail about both villages would go through her at all times.
- Again, same as Temari. She has experience with Team Samui so she's perfect to be a member of the Hokage Guard Platoon.
- I was thinking about promoting her to tokubetsu jōnin because her kenjutsu and Raiton are so cool and she a specialist in those areas but I think chūnin is okay for a ninja of her calibre because she'd be going on a lot of missions. The nature of her chūnin missions would be mainly to take down several enemies, infiltration, patrol and guarding for other villages.
-
⇛ Tenten:
Owner of her weapon shop Ninja Tools Tententen.
Chūnin Exams proctor.
Teacher of bukijutsu in the Ninja Academy.
Active chūnin.
- For me Tenten and her shop presents the same problem as Ino but Tenten is alone to manage her shop so free time for other average jobs is limited. It could be written differently.
- Instead of managing her shop, Tenten would actually take orders of ninja equipment and have employees distribute to those areas. That would give her time to focus on other things. She founded her own business so she manages it according to her own schedule.
- She's already shown as a proctor of the second stage of the Chūnin Exams with Shino since exams are once or twice a year. Still keeps her role as supervisor in the control room.
- Being the best bukijutsu user in the world but not doing anything about it is criminal. She's a teacher of shurikenjutsu and ninja arts in the Ninja Academy.
- She'd go on missions regularly like Konoha Shinden. The nature of her chūnin missions would be infiltration.
-
⇛ Tsunade:
Member of the Konoha Council as advisor (hierarchy).
Sakura's advisor in Konoha Hospital.
Retired ninja.
- Tsunade has been forgotten and made obsolete like Kakashi so I will not allow it.
- I'm in favor of removing Homura and Koharu from the advisory job. The new elder and advisor in the hierarchy would be Tsunade with Kakashi as the previous Hokage and ninja with a lot of experience in building the current Konoha. She will always be there to mentor the Hokage in the managing of Konoha and policy/decision making and become an irreplaceable asset for the village.
- Her experience in the leadership of a village could be used in aiding Sakura in the Medical Department by informing her about medical development in other villages. Give Sakura her approval with some of her developments for the village's health system is one of the things she'd do most, more like as a second opinion.
- She'd be retired from ninja duty, instead letting the generation she raised take command. However, she'd be travelling the world and it wouldn't overlook any issue happening in her surroundings to tell her village as advisor.
-
⇛ Hinata Uzumaki:
Help Hanabi pass down the Hyūga techniques.
Retired ninja.
- I honestly don't see her participating in shinobi stuff because it's what she doesn't like and I see that she enjoys family life, being a mother, taking care of Himawari, etc. She was never a natural leader either and the rest of jobs are related to shinobi life.
- It's not really a job but maybe she could be Hanabi's assistant in passing down the Hyūga techniques or just assist Hanabi in general since she's busy.

This overview of the history illustrates the pervasiveness of “belief perseverance,” the psychological tendency to maintain a belief despite clear and strong new evidence that should challenge it, especially in the context of institutional incentives that favor inertia and resistance to change. In an era of amazing scientific advances, with very rapid vaccine development following virus sequencing obtained in a few days, the very slow acceptance of critical new knowledge reminds us that the human aspects of science remain as pervasive as they were in past eras.
The persistence of the droplet paradigm may have been aided by several other reasons. First, even if the mechanism is incorrect, it still works reasonably well to reduce infection from airborne diseases, especially less contagious ones that mostly transmit in close proximity. Distance from an infectious person will always increase the dilution of exhaled air and reduce such transmission. Unfortunately, major systematic problems arise when a true empirical fact (distance reduces transmission) is used to reach the incorrect conclusion (the mechanism is spray-borne droplets), and then, the incorrect mechanism is used to deduce what other measures may be protective. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic billions of dollars were spent putting up lateral plexiglass barriers in schools to block droplet projectiles (even though such barriers have actually been shown to increase SARS-CoV-2 transmission29) rather than opening the windows or wearing masks. Second, spray-borne droplets are relatively easy to protect against, just keep your distance and wash hands and you should be quite safe. It thus provides simple rules to communicate to healthcare workers and the general population. Third, it removes the intense fear that airborne transmission can cause, and that has been associated with it throughout history. The historical fear often appears to be rooted in the more phantasmagorical conception of airborne transmission: The infected air can reach a person anywhere, and there is little that one could do to protect oneself from it. Critically, the logic leading to the fear did not account for the importance of dilution, and the feasibility of using it to reduce transmission. The irrational fear caused by this lack of understanding is paralyzing and creates real-world problems for controlling disease transmission, as summarized, for example, in the above quotes from Cornet and Chapin: Either people just gave up, or extreme measures were needed such as treating tuberculosis patients like lepers. Fourth, given that strict airborne transmission prevention measures can be costly or unavailable at large scale in healthcare facilities (e.g., negative pressure rooms in hospitals), there was a reluctance of public health organizations to declare a widespread virus such as SARS-CoV-2 during the pandemic as airborne, out of fear of the budgetary, legal, and labor consequences. Governments also seemed content to promote measures that only require personal responsibility, such as handwashing, and were much more reluctant to explain airborne transmission clearly as it would require costly actions on their part, for example, to improve ventilation and filtration in public buildings. Finally, a desire to save face by some authorities may have also played a role. They had emphatically declared airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to be “misinformation,” and it could be embarrassing to subsequently acknowledge the importance of airborne transmission, which may perhaps qualify as one of the largest errors in the history of public health. In the private words of a public health advisor to a national government, “an approach is needed that will allow [us] to save face.”
interesting paper about how/why authorities incorrectly identified COVID as a non-airborne disease, exacerbating the pandemic and spreading misinfo about protective measures

On 28 May 1926 Sir James Cantlie, the Scottish physician, died.
Cantlie, was born on 17th January 1851 at Keithmore Farm, Dufftown, Banffshire, the eldest son of William and Janet Cantlie.
His early education took place at a local school in the village of Drummuir and at Milne's Institution at Fochabers, Speyside. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1871 with an MA in natural science before training in medicine at the same institution and graduating MB and CM with honourable distinction in 1873.
Cantlie was appointed instructor of anatomy at Charing Cross Hospital, London, in the same year. He became an instructor in the St John Ambulance Association and in 1882 he joined the London Scottish Volunteers as a surgeon. In 1883 he played a part in the establishment of the Volunteer Medical Staff Corps, volunteering later that year for service in Egypt, where he developed an interest in tropical diseases.
Cantlie was interested in the physical condition of the urban poor and wrote a paper entitled Degeneracy among Londoners which was read at the Parkes Museum in 1885. In 1887 he moved to Hong Kong where he practised medicine and established a medical college for Chinese students, the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese which later became the University of Hong Kong. One of the college’s first students was Sun Yat-Sen, who became the first president of the Chinese republic in 1911. In 1886 Cantlie was appointed advisor to the India Office when an epidemic of bubonic plague broke out in Bombay.
In 1896 Cantlie returned to London to take the chair of applied anatomy at Charing Cross Hospital. Soon afterwards, he was instrumental in obtaining the release of Sun Yat-Sen after his abduction by Chinese agents and detention at the Chinese legation in London.
Cantlie was a co-founder of the Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, which published its first edition in August 1898, and was its editor for the following 23 years.
