more cfau miscellaneous things because Childhood Friends Danny and Jason have my head and heart always and I need to finish rewriting chapter two dammit (and redo the half-finished chapter 4 because its just Not The Vibes). i'm almost through I need to get through the graveyard scene. (i just stubbornly refuse to have it be shorter than the original chapter and thats the little death. that is the mind killer.)

Danny and jason’s ghost forms both smell faintly like burnt flesh and cigarettes. However, Jason has a more smokey smell while Danny’s smells almost,,, electrical? In a sense? Like he just straight up smells like burnt flesh and sulphur while Jason smells like someone put him in a smoker first.

It’s very much an unpleasant smell but Danny finds an odd comfort in it just as much as he finds a comfort in the smell of nicotine.

(Jason post-revival smells burnt flesh once and is immediately offput by the fact that it brings him an instinctive comfort. He doesn’t realize its because it reminds him of Danny, and is uncomfortable by it.)

In an au of an au, Danny’s altercation with Rath ends with Rath regaining enough of his sanity to snap out of the grieving state and ends with him breaking down. Instead of being souped and imprisoned, Rath, who is permanently 14, decides to Move On into the unknown. He’s exhausted, heartbroken, and tired.

(Is this influenced heavily by the ParaNorman scene where he talks to Agatha and helps her move on? Yes. But it doesn’t fit with the Original Storyline so im shoving it into an Au of an Au.)

Rath tells Danny that Jason lied to them (which he genuinely believes), and that he’s tired of waiting/looking for him/grieving. Jason is gone. He isn’t coming back, he abandoned them. And he wants his mom and dad, and his sister, and his friends. And he’s ready to join them.

He leads Danny out to Gotham, which other than Amity Park might’ve been the only city left untouched due to Rath’s own mental block on the place. They go out to the park he and Jason used to frequent or up to one of crime alley’s rooftops, and there Rath lies down and goes to sleep. Only to never wake up again, materializing into nothing as his soul moves on.

Before Rath leaves, he forces Danny to promise him that he’ll only wait for Jason for ten years. After that if he doesn’t find him, or if Jason doesn’t show, then Danny has to move on. Whether that be like how Rath does, or if its inly mentally/emotionally, doesn’t matter. He has to move on. Don’t wait for him. Don’t waste his time any more.

(“Oh, and if you find him, kick his ass for me.”)

Danny reluctantly agrees, and Rath lies down. Danny sings to him as he falls asleep.

(Angsty points if the vigilantes including Red Hood caught wind of their presence and were silently watching from the shadows. Rath might know they’re there, but Danny’s too focused on Rath to notice.)

(If only so that Red Hood realizes that this is what happened to Danny, and that Danny is gone before he can make things right. The tragedy, folks. The angst. The initial realization that Danny was Rath, and then also that Danny was dead and has been dead for years, and that before he moved on, he moved on believing that Jason abandoned him.)

(like i said it doesn't fit in the original timeline/storyline hence why its an au of an au and isn't nearly a fleshed out, but i was largely just focusing on the tragedy of Rath moving on and Jason being alive to see it and realize just who Rath is.)

Just like how the Lazarus pits shot Jason's twiggy 4'6-5'4 (depending on what you find) feet tall and 86lb ass up like a tree an essentially fixed his malnutrition, the portal did the same thing for Danny.

(granted i forgot about malnutrition and danny's likely stunted growth at first -- his family lived in crime alley and despite both his parents working, I don't think they had enough food all the time. He probably wasn't as badly malnourished as Jason was, but he wasn't healthy either.)

Granted his ghost in its "natural" state (14) is short, and his growth spurts were slow at first, it did result in him reaching his dad's height. There were points where it just happened overnight, like a baby. He went to bed one night 5’6 and woke up the next day 5’10.

Jazz is shorter than him. Although I have't decided if she's even liminal at all (and if she is, it didn't cure everything because she would have also suffered childhood malnutrition, and since in au canon their parents didn't get their hands on physical ectoplasm until after they got to Amity Park. So the exposure is less.)

Danny's voice absolutely sounds like canon Dan's. It kinda just dropped one day when he was 16-17 and never went back up. Sam and Tucker sometimes ask him to just talk about anything because they find his voice soothing.

I'm not sure yet how Danny would feel about it at first considering Rath, but I imagine that Rath, when he did speak, would have had a quieter and scratchier/weaker voice considering he's spent the last decade shrieking and crying.

(and i suppose technically that shouldn't have any effect on his throat considering he's a ghost and idk if that would actually affect him, but i like the idea so im keeping it)

In the beginning you could hear him from a mile away by the sound of his loud, echoing wails, but ten years later you can only really hear him by the soft, shuddering sobs he makes. Like he's gasping for air that isn't there. The future is full of very quiet survivors.

And it's much easier to speak when you pitch your voice upwards (especially when whispering/speaking quietly) so he might've spoken in a higher, airy pitch in order to be heard. So Danny might actually find a comfort in having a lower voice.

So the Duke Su character and husband Shen characters in the source novel have diverged a LOT in the The Double cdrama. It's 2 different stories! And as fascinating as the husband is in the live action drama, as the man struggling to ride a tiger without being devoured, I also enjoy how the ambitious & illusive Shen Yurong in the novel is the one thing this monstrous princess can't grasp. A rough snippet from the alternate novel verse,

"Yongning, let it be." Shen Yurong said.

     Princess Yongning glanced up and looked at him and asked, "Shen Lang, what do you mean by that?"

 "Xue Huaiyuan's case, you should not intervene. Even if Jiang Li took the Tongxiang County people to sue the imperial concubine, it would not be able to involve you. If you reproduce the incident..."

     Yongning sucked in her heart and looked at Shen Yurong, and said nothing.

     She did not tell Shen Yurong about Xue family, and instructed Feng Yutang to send Xue Huaiyuan to prison. She did not tell Shen Yurong; privately did Shen Yurong not know, Yongning was not very clear. However, Yongning guessed that Shen Yurong didn't know, because with Shen Yurong's temperament, if it is known, he should not stand idly by. He still had feelings for Xue Fangfei, how could he watch Xue Fangfei's father suffer?

     Jiang Li took Xue Huaiyuan to Capital City, and Yongning couldn't wait to kill someone. In addition to not involving himself, Shen Yurong was more unwilling to know.

Of course, this is impossible. This is so big that Shen Yurong will know it anyway.

     But he stated the matter so calmly and mildly, somehow, Princess Yongning had goosebump on her body.

     He had known for a long time. He even knew what Feng Yutang had done to Xue Huaiyuan. He didn't know what the purpose was and didn't stop it. He just watched everything she did so quietly.

     Princess Yongning is also a bit confused, this man, did he really love Xue Fangfei? If it is love, can it be so ruthless? Does he love himself? Would he be so cold to himself?

     "Yongning," his voice contained a sense of tenderness, "I don't want you to be in trouble."

     He rarely speaks such nice words, although Princess Yongning knows that he can do well in writing. It should not be difficult to say one or two good words. But he is always very similar, don't say love words, words that are gentle and concerned, and not every day.

     But today he said them, looking at Yongning, sincerely.

i had like. the most insane conversation with my family earlier this evening and i truly am not able to process it. my dad recently joined the board of the local community theatre after having been involved in shows there for the last ~15 years. so he knows all the frequent cast members & goes to plays there regularly. which is great don't get me wrong.

but like. he was talking about the show they just finished (which he wasn't in) and was just so casually like "yeah for the first performance they had one person out sick with covid. and wouldn't you know it the next day they had five cast members out with covid. and then the lead got sick - with stomach flu! not covid!" (disregarding, of course, that covid frequently manifests as GI disturbances and the reliability of rapid tests are a crapshoot.) "- so they had another cast member learn the part basically overnight and he did a great job the next day. then when your mom and i went out for dinner that sunday we ran into them having a cast party on the restaurant patio so i stopped by and said hi."

and i'm just like. do you fucking HEAR YOURSELF???? this isn't a heartwarming story of the local community theatre having a The Show Must Go On moment, it's every single performance of this show being a mini-superspreader event and nobody batting an eye! and then everybody goes out to dinner afterwards! at least they had the conscience to eat outside but jesus fucking christ. the like. complete nonchalance of your attitude is horrific!

As An Uncle

This isn't quite my Tumblr trailer yet, but here's an idea I've been thinking about. I was thinking of a fic where something happens to Mala. Somehow, she ends up passing away and it's before she and Dagur can have a kid. Then Heather comes back from having been traveling for a while and she's pregnant. She found somebody she liked, but he didn't want a kid, so she went back home and delivers. Unfortunately, she dies in childbirth. So, Dagur's just crushed because both she and Mala are gone now. He has to stay strong for his new niece. He ends up taking care of the baby and there will be various threats and issues (probably because he's going to need to eventually tell the kid that he killed her adopted grandparents on her mom's side). I'm not sure what else will happen yet, but I want to do something with this.

I know this is just beating a dead horse at this point but good god Warriors really does have so many opportunities to write all kinds of different complex tales and relationships, even just as shorts, and it makes me so so sad. Even just the smaller things, the ones that almost hilariously ignore the bigger plot going on around them.

We all know Breezepelt, but I personally wanna know about his kids! I want to know what kind of father he is to four whole daughters. He’s the guy known for having daddy issues, is he a terrible father? Is he just an okay one? Is he genuinely trying really hard to be good? I want to know!

What about the aftermath of Brokenstar’s reign? What happened to the apprenticed kits who survived the ordeal? Did they remain as paws but had an extended training time? Were they put back in the nursery and expected to just go on knowing what the outside world looked like until moons later? What about the apprentices named before they were adults, were they changed back to paws? What kind of generational trauma did ShadowClan carry from Brokenstar, from all the children who died and all the ones who grew up much too fast?

Dawnpelt was known for mainly one thing: the cat who believed, wholeheartedly, that Jayfeather killed Flametail. She is now also the mother of Sleekwhisker, a Darktail obsessed villain, Juniperclaw, who briefly joined Darktail, poisoned prey, and is now dead and guarding the border between StarClan and the Dark Forest. And then there’s Strikestone, who joined Darktail for a bit but then didn’t do much else except also die. Thats two children dead, one who is denied redemption despite his willingness to, and a third child whos very murderous. Does that not fuck someone up, at least a little?

Pouncestep is my personal favorite simply because she has become the background character in a family of main characters. Lightleap is slowly getting a little bit of spotlight thanks to Blazefire, but Pouncestep is just...there. Literally what is her life even like, watching all her important family members deal with the worst thing ever five times a week. Is she minding her own business. I hope she’s just vibing. I want a calm short with her ignoring all the plot.

Moonkitti brought this up already, but she was so right for it, cause...what about all the cats named in honor of the dead? Hollytuft? Sorrelstripe? Fernsong? Even new Bristlekit and Stemkit, and so many more---does that not mess with a cat? We know it messed with Nightheart, and while being named after and related to Firestar I’m sure does some things to a dude, we have other cats who do look eerily similar to who they’re named after. Lets not even start with Cinderheart. With this naming tradition becoming more and more common, one has to wonder if ThunderClan is gonna be filled to the brim with cats that have some INSANE identity issues.
