Meet The (Updated) Writing Team

Hello Kinfolks! These last two months have been quiet for y'all in terms of updates, but BUSY in terms of the work being done by the sept of contributors to this project!

At the start of October I put out the call for help, saying that this project cannot succeed without the help and support of the Werewolf fandom. I'm happy to report that you as a fandom have responded phenomenally, and production on this series is now underway! These last few months have been dedicated to recruiting team members, and researching our book framework. We've about filled in the main core of the team, and have already gotten started writing Book 1: Cliath!

October through November has been dedicated entirely to research, both putting together a collection of citations we'll be using in this first book, and passing out initial writing assignments. This list is sure to grow in time, but for now we have plenty of work to do!

Silverman, along with authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey, allege that OpenAI and Meta’s respective artificial intelligence-backed language models were trained on illegally-acquired datasets containing the authors’ works, according to the suit.

The complaints state that ChatGPT and Meta’s LLaMA honed their skills using “shadow library” websites like Bibliotik, Library Genesis and Z-Library, among others, which are illegal given that most of the material uploaded on these sites is protected by authors’ rights to the intellectual property over their works.

When asked to create a dataset, ChatGPT reportedly produced a list of titles from these illegal online libraries.

“The books aggregated by these websites have also been available in bulk via torrent systems,” says the proposed class-action suit against OpenAI, which was filed in San Francisco federal court on Friday along with another suit against Facebook parent Meta Platforms.

Exhibits included with the suit show ChatGPT’s response when asked to summarize books by Silverman, Golden and Kadrey.

The first example shows the AI bot’s summary of Silverman’s memoir, The Bedwetter; then Golden’s award-winning novel Ararat; and finally Kadrey’s Sandman Slim.

The suit says ChatGPT’s synopses of the titles fails to “reproduce any of the copyright management information Plaintiffs included with their published works” despite generating “very accurate summaries.”

This “means that ChatGPT retains knowledge of particular works in the training dataset and is able to output similar textual content,” it added.

The authors’ suit against Meta also points to the allegedly illicit sites used to train LLaMA, the ChatGPT competitor the Mark Zuckerberg-owned company launched in February.

AI models are all trained using large sets of data and algorithms. One of the datasets LLaMA uses to get smarter is called The Pile, and was assembled by nonprofit AI research group EleutherAI.

Silverman, Goldman and Kadrey’s suit points to a paper published by EleutherAI that details how one of its datasets, called Books3, was “derived from a copy of the contents of the Bibliotik private tracker.”

Bibliotik — one of the handful of “shadow libraries” named in the lawsuit — are “flagrantly illegal,” the court documents said.

The authors say in both claims that they “did not consent to the use of their copyrighted books as training material” for either of the AI models, claiming OpenAI and Meta therefore violated six counts of copyright laws, including negligence, unjust enrichment and unfair competition.

Although the suit says that the damage “cannot be fully compensated or measured in money,” the plaintiffs are looking for statutory damages, restitution of profits and more.

The authors’ legal counsel did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

The Post has also reached out to OpenAI and Meta for comment.

The lawyers representing the three authors — Joseph Saveri and Matthew Butterick — are involved in multiple suits involving authors and AI models, according to their LLMlitigation website.

In 2022, they filed a suit against OpenAI’s GitHub Copilot — which turns natural language into code and was acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 billion in 2018 — claiming that it violates privacy, unjust enrichment and unfair competition laws, and also commits fraud, among other things.

Saveri and Butterick also filed a complaint earlier this year challenging AI image generator Stable Diffusion, and have represented a slew of other book authors in class-action litigation against AI tech.

This is such an infuriating problem. Another 30 year old man here, I grew up in nearly the exact same scenario as these people, preloaded with shitty beliefs. I endured the endless tumblr posts that said without nuance 'ew guys' and ragged on white people for their unaddressed racial bias, and it was painful but I endured and listened and heard the message I was supposed to hear because I wanted to be better! And I think I am, compared to the conservative-parent-puppet shitshow I was before! What are you supposed to do with people who don't have that desire? Who run home and cry into the arms of fascists when they're confronted with the barest natural pains of unlearning bigotry? Why must we have empathy for people who refuse to hone their own? When do we demand that they take responsibility for the things they say and do? They have flaws that form barriers between themselves and others; but confronting them on these flaws only makes the barriers thicker. Despite everything I have to believe that redemption is possible for them, because it was for me. But I have no idea what it looks like. Maybe someone who looks and acts 'manly' going on TikTok and making videos with conservative clickbait titles and offering gentle, baby-steps life advice and parasocial companionship for the shittiest people on Earth, but anyone who tries is going to be in the direct line of fire.

In an abstract sense, I do care about them, I do want them to exist. I want everyone in the world to have a happy, fulfilled life, to never be hurt or hurt others, and to never face injustice.

But what love can be offered white guys that we don't already have in spades? We're surrounded by mirrors in every story. We are the Default of bigotry, absolutely untouched by nearly every unfair societal ill the world has to offer, save the expectations of masculinity, a problem solved by embracing feminism. It's been a very, very long time since I've seen a hyperbole-strewn post hating on white guys in aggregate, and I've more often seen pushback on that very idea. I do recommend people take this test, it's a riot.

But like, it's not a study. (The site linked above appears to be yet another waste-of-space Amazon-affiliate-advertising content aggregator grift, which talks a big game about Creative Commons but why would I want to repurpose any of this material in the first place? The only original content I can see here is obviously-AI-generated thumbnails for the art, which look like dogshit. The original results post for the test is a much better read.)

The way the test is designed is like this. Images were roughly balanced by art style: so of all the digital-art pieces, 50% are human, 50% are AI, same for the renaissance paintings, same for the impressionist stuff, same for abstract. Except, obviously, the human pictures have been selected to exhibit stereotypical signs of AI-ness: overdetail, odd scaling, incorrect proportions, random meaningless shapes, illegible text. Meanwhile, the AI stuff has been filtered to avoid anything that had obvious tells to a layman's eye, like fucked-up hands or whatever.

So it's basically a game of like... whatever your gut instinct tells you the image's provenance is, it's probably the opposite.

When you filter out the human works, and look at the provenance of solely the AI pictures (as given in the results post), that's when you find out what this test is actually indicative of. The pieces were mostly generated by two ACX readers, Ryan Wise and Jack Galler. I remember spotting every single one of Ryan's images, without fail. Meanwhile, nearly all of Jack's images fooled me. (There were also a handful of other AI images taken from social media or whatever, which again, I easily pegged as being AI-generated, they're pure slop.)

I'll actually go so far as to say that it's pretty embarrassing for Ryan that he thought these images were good enough to share. Wall-eyed figures whose clothes blend into flesh, abstract shapes with eerily-lifelike inhuman faces leering out of the picture, inconsistent details... but most of all, a sense that the prompts themselves were bereft of any creativity. "robot skeleton abstract painting", "woman in field impressionist". Come on man. AI is the ultimate tool for ideas-guys, and yet here you are without a single idea to show for yourself.

Ryan was apparently using StableDiffusion. Meanwhile, here's Jack talking about his process:

I just used Midjourney. Most of the prompts were just describing some generic impressionist scene. I've never had an art history class (but I am an art history fan!), so I worked with ChatGPT to identify key trends of say, Impressionism, so I could prompt better. I generated a lot of each one ,and just used my subjective opinion to decide what looked good and what didn't. The Paris Scene (which fooled the most people) had this prompt: "Impressionist painting of a bustling Parisian street under the soft rain, 1881" The Riverside Cafe (which people liked the most) had this prompt: "Impressionist painting of a countryside café terrace during twilight, 1883"

It seems that specifying a year in particular was what helped Midjourney hone in on these historical styles in a convincing way. Jack's method obviously involved a huge amount of cherry-picking—which I would argue is another huge element of human intervention, if only in a sense of curation. A version of this test I would like to see would be one where both different AI models and a range of talented artists were given the same prompt. What if it was one-shot, with just a single generation, no cherry-picking? Except of course an AI can generate thousands of paintings in the time it takes a human to do just one, so what would that even prove?

This test reminded me of a piece I saw on deviantART a long time ago, of this ruined fantasy castle in a cave. Pretty cool! But then you look at it a bit longer, and it's like- hang on, why is that human skull the size of the collapsed turret lying next to it? It's exactly the kind of nonsensical composition you see in AI, except no, it's just a digital artist using photoshop and they fucked it. I kind of feel like this is where the state-of-the-art of AI image generation is right now; about as good as a guy bashing together stock assets in photoshop, which is to say maybe good enough to get an idea across, even if it can't actually stand on its own two legs as a piece of art.

So yeah, from a cynical perspective, I'd find it hard to argue that Jack's generations aren't "good enough" for many applications. I don't know that I'd hang any of them in a gallery. The longer I look at them, the less I like them. But they've got the right vibes.

So a more accurate headline for that BOING BOING article might be, "AI art haters unknowingly prefer AI-generated works by Jack Galler, according to test".

If there's one thing I'll be taking away from this post, that's helped me better understand my own feelings on AI art, it's this analogy from digital artist Ilzo, quoted in the results analysis:

Imagine if everyone got the ability to create mostly nutritional adequate meals for like five cents, but they all were mediocre rehydrated powder with way too much sucralose or artificial grape flavor or such. And your friends start inviting you over to dinner parties way more often because it's so easy to deal with food now, but practically every time, they serve you sucralose protein shake. (Maybe they do so because they were used to almost never eating food? This isn't a perfect analogy.) Furthermore, imagine people calling this the future of food and saying chefs are obsolete. You'd probably be like "wow, I'm happy that you have easy access to food you enjoy, and it is convenient for me to use sometimes, but this is kind of driving me crazy".

Last month, over 11,000 people took Astral Codex Ten's survey to see if they could they tell the difference between 50 human-made art and AI-generated images. The results were humbling for humans, especially ones who professed a loathing for AI art.

Most participants stumbled through the test, scoring just 60% — barely better than flipping a coin. What tripped them up? Our preconceptions about art styles, it turns out, are deeply ingrained. When people saw classic Impressionist paintings, they confidently declared them human-made (and were often wrong). When they encountered digital art, they quickly labeled it as AI (and were frequently mistaken).

Perhaps the most ironic finding was about people who claimed to despise AI art. When these AI critics picked their favorite pieces without knowing their origin, they consistently chose AI-generated works. Even among those who rated their hatred of AI art at maximum levels, their top two favorite pieces were created by machines.

Harman Kaur is the Vice President of AI at Tanium, a leader in Autonomous Endpoint Management (AEM) with the industry’s only true real-time platform for AI. What initially sparked your interest in AI and cybersecurity, and how did that passion evolve into a career that led you to become VP of AI at Tanium?

I joined the military when I was 18 for the opportunity to build a life the way that I wanted to do it. That allowed me the opportunity to study different fields like law, before meeting a mentor who inspired me to learn how to use computers. That changed my life. I ended up getting a degree which was a mix of Computer Science and Business. Then, with that experience, I worked in a cyber intelligence military unit. That jump-started my career and led me to work at Tanium when it was still a startup.

Since then, I’ve worn many different hats at Tanium. I’ve worked in technical roles and been Chief of Staff for our Chairman and CEO. Ultimately, my interest in building new products with emerging and new technologies is what drew me to my current role.

While you can study cybersecurity and AI in school, those of us who find ourselves in these spaces or who are interested in them have to carve our own paths. It’s a field where we all bring different backgrounds and expertise to the table, and what really sets you apart is how you apply that context and knowledge.

How does your dual experience in the military and AI intersect in terms of decision-making, leadership, and problem-solving?

My dual experience in the military and AI intersects in decision-making, leadership, and problem-solving. In the military, I honed the ability to make quick, strategic decisions under pressure, working in diverse settings like hospitals, maintenance and flying units,             cyber, and even on staff for Generals. At Tanium, I’ve focused on building teams, products, and partnerships, which requires a more analytical approach. This blend of experiences gives me a unique perspective and the confidence to overcome any challenge.

You’ve mentioned that automation will be essential for cybersecurity teams by 2025. What specific developments do you foresee making automation indispensable in the coming years?

On its own, automation helps an organization scale cybersecurity practices. The more we adopt additional devices, software and systems, the more automation can enhance and consistently enforce security policies across large environments while identifying patterns to create better, more proactive defense.

Automation also provides critical insights into operating systems through better data aggregation. This allows our security teams to optimize their policies at a time when technology is constantly changing and introducing new threats.

AI takes automation capabilities to a new level. The combination of the two allows organizations to handle repetitive, mundane tasks so that human cybersecurity experts can focus on high-impact work. Coupled with real-time data on an organization’s operating environment as it looks today, AI and automation can detect threats and remediate issues faster than before.

In your view, what’s the most significant obstacle for companies aiming to implement automation in their cybersecurity practices, and how can they prepare to overcome it?

Organizations have to consider the risks this technology introduces, especially when it comes to identity and authentication. They’ll need to consider how to handle these new threats associated with automation. They’ll also need to introduce strong governance mechanisms and transparent feedback loops so that security teams can monitor what AI and automation are actually doing, adjusting policies as needed.

What advancements in AI will Tanium be pursuing to enhance endpoint security in 2025? Could you elaborate on the role of automation and AI in autonomous endpoint management?

With autonomous endpoint management, or AEM, we’re automating every core IT workflow: endpoint management, sure, but also security, incident response, patching, change management, and performance monitoring. Automated systems can take care of the mundane, repetitive work involved in those processes. Then, we’re coupling our unmatched ability to provide real-time data on an organization’s operating environment with AI that can surface critical insights on real threats and vulnerabilities as they’re happening and steps for remediation. Our goal, so to speak, is to turn the keys of the mundane tasks over to automation and let AI handle threat detection so that cybersecurity teams can focus on executing on remediation faster. Their trust in the product empowers them to focus on business-critical work.

In terms of what we’re pursuing in 2025, first, we’ll continue to invest in better automation. We want to push boundaries and make automation even more of a force multiplier than it already is as well as building agents. We’re thinking: How can we make it bigger? How can we make it so robust and so simple that our human cybersecurity teams can focus less on the mundane work and more on the high-impact work?

We’ll also expand to prioritize visibility into proactive cybersecurity. We want to give our customers visibility into things before they go wrong. That, along with using data for better decision-making, is a major focus for us. We want to give actionable recommendations that organizations can take before they’re impacted by the next big vulnerability.

Why is real-time data critical to making AI in security effective? How does Tanium ensure its AI capabilities are genuinely leveraging real-time data?

AI is helping us enhance productivity and do things faster. However, there is a level of hesitation with this technology. Organizations want to make sure they can trust the results and those results need to be actionable. Real-time data is an incredible validation tool and enabler of action. Being able to find issues after they happen and using that information to ensure they don’t happen again is helpful, but being able to find issues as they happen and remediating those issues in real-time with the context of your actual operating environment as it looks like today is a superpower – and the future of cybersecurity.

With Tanium, real-time data allows you to interact with your endpoints and put AI’s knowledge to work. It gives actions based on historical and current data and learnings to draw conclusions for the future. We do this with our endpoint management agent, which continuously collects and transmits data to a centralized source of truth, regardless of whether the device is online or offline. Our Tanium Data Service collects information continuously and automatically from the registered sensors of all endpoints. That ensures the data that our AI capabilities are using is genuinely real-time data.

What should companies evaluate when selecting AI-driven security providers to ensure they’re getting robust, real-time solutions?

First, organizations should engage with as many providers as possible. Everyone is investing in AI right now. There is no standardized, one-size-fits-all solution to using this technology, and it’s worth investigating all the different approaches to AI.

Secondly, organizations need to understand where they want to focus. Whether it’s employee productivity, faster coding, note-taking, or better parameter security, they need to figure out their highest priority rather than trying to boil the ocean.

After aligning on that, it’s important to create a framework around onboarding. Simply buying a solution and turning it on won’t work, even if a vendor says it will. Security teams need to think about access control and data policy. AI requires significantly more onboarding than previous tools, and most organizations will need to create the processes for that well ahead of implementation.

Could you provide a vision for Tanium’s roadmap, particularly how it aims to achieve autonomous endpoint management and streamline complex IT environments?

Already, AEM is delivering autonomous capabilities across our existing platform. Using real-time data and insights from millions of endpoints, we share recommendations and enable organizations to automate changes on those endpoints so they can streamline their operations and improve security wholesale. AEM is a comprehensive platform, and it empowers our customers to take action at the right time and to have confidence in their decisions, which are based on real-time, scaled data.

That’s where we are right now, but we’re not finished. We have plans for how we’ll continue to tackle complex cybersecurity problems. Moving forward, we’re focusing on the convergence of two things to bolster cybersecurity: AI and IT operations. Plenty of providers combine AI and security, and we’re doing the same already, but we also want to be the gold standard for AI in IT operations. Personally, I’d like to see every single Tanium customer have at least one process they’ve fully automated. Hopefully, that first step can help them build a foundation for automating their processes even further.

To help you build confidence my advice for anyone, not just women, is to identify what skills are missing on a team and work towards filling that gap. Filling in the gaps can help build confidence in yourself as a problem solver while also making you indispensable.
