Just like John, Jake's a bit of a goof - but he's not stupid. He's fully aware that Jane's got a bit of a crush, and I take it they've been dancing around the elephant in this room for quite a while.

Does he also know about Roxy's crush on him? Or, for that matter, the Auto-Responder's? I have to assume so - neither are very subtle - which means that Jake's in an awkward position where no matter what he does, he's going to hurt at least two of his friends' feelings, and he knows it.

You've thought about it, but you haven't acted on those feelings, even though you know they'd be reciprocated, so I don't think you're exactly seeing sparks. I reread their earlier conversation, and I really don't get a romantic vibe between them. (Hell, I get a stronger romantic vibe between Jane and Roxy, but I'm a little biased.)

This line, at least, makes a lot more sense now - and in retrospect, it reads as more than a little uncomfortable. Jake doesn't seem to want to bring the issue up at all...

...but the fact that he keeps vaguely drawing attention to it makes me think he wants her to bring it up. He wants to resolve it, but he's too awkward to initiate the conversation himself.

I think our boy is simply a rather poor communicator - which is unfortunate, because that trait does not pair well with his position as the kid everyone's got a crush on.

Homestuck: Beyond Canon Upd8 for August 11, 2024

So I've heard we have an upd8 today! And we've got a news post too! Right off the bat, we'll have another chapter "a little later in the month." Guess I'll have to keep my ear to the ground. Not sure there's an extension out there that can determine when the team upd8s a Ren'py game attached to their website.

I haven't been able to support the Patreon for a bit, so I'm unaware of the music previews James mentions. His little spiel makes me worried he might go Grimdark at some point . . .

We've still got another collab in the works, but we don't have the details yet. And yeah, I've been experiencing heat where I live that definitely slowed me down a peg.

On to the upd8!

Even with the realizations she made before, apparently this is still really slow going.

Oh wow! She's literally growing up! Wherever she is, she's physically aging in what is probably real time. Here's a shot from the last blog for comparison.

Her hair and horns are both longer, she's taller in frame, her neck is longer, and her eyes and mouth sit smaller on her face. Somehow though, she's still fitting into her outfit. Wonder if they're letting her alchemize new clothes?

Oh man! We've apparently missed some reconciliation with Eridan, John, and Kanaya! I feel especially robbed about missing out on the Kanaya portion. But we all know who the "HER" is. Though it would be a hilarious fake out if it was Nepeta or Feferi!

Vriska does not say no to cookies!

We get another callback to Vriska's previous adventures as she remembers talking to John about their relationships with their ancestors. But she apparently doesn't understand how humans can have family ties. At least she seems more curious about it now.

Of course Nanna would have to describe having a child as having "novelty". It's nice to see a little bit more background on this version of Jane.

Vriska just cannot get past the idea why anyone would put up with a baby given the unavoidable accidents.

Nannasprite has apparently seen everything Jane has accomplished and is, at the very least, curious how things might have turned out if she hadn't settled down.

Wow. That had to really suck. Nana never felt loved or even wanted before she settled down. That might have been why finding someone who did love her and want to start a family with her caused her to change all her plans.

This is another attitude that Vriska previously would never have considered. She was always certain she had to be best, had to surpass every expectation, and very much felt she had a destiny to fulfill. The idea that someone would just "give up" on all that and do their own thing is more alien to her than humanity itself.

Wow! Vriska was actually mindful she might have lost her cool and genuinely apologized! She is learning!

And some genuine affection here too.

Wait! That's broken Paradox Space! Is Vriska facing Game Over Terezi?

And these are Vriska's typing quirks! Wait! Does she have to come to terms with Game Over Vriska? AKA (Vriska)? Does she have to reconcile with herself?

Wait! Mindfang? Does she have to come to terms with her relationship with Mindfang? If that's the case, no wonder she's not getting anywhere. Everything else has probably been about figuring out what the other person wants. But Vriska's problem was she was always trying to live up to Mindfang, an extremely poor example and role model. In this case, she almost certainly need to stop caring about what Mindfang might want.

Oh! It's not Mindfang! It's Vriska's idea of her, all wrapped up in her relationship with her lusus. It's basically both of Vriska's parental figures rolled into one.

She definitely needs to not give a shit about what this entity wants! While there is value in understanding who her lusus was and who Mindfang was, there is no value in engaging with them. This is all about Vriska learning how trying to live up to their needs and expectations, instead of living up to her own desires, caused her so much pain and heartache.

Heh! "Momfang."

Also I can't decide if this reminds me more of the Venom symbiote or Conceptual Hair.

It is important that Vriska recognizes that these two entities were formative to her. But I really feel like that's all there is here. Understanding who they were and the impact they had on her life. The next revelation is that this doesn't need to define her.

Momfang's words echo a lot of Vriska's own thoughts and words on death and murder. Whether she, or indeed we, like it or not, Vriska does need to forgiver herself for her past. But not by accepting the violent environment as justification. She needs to understand that while she has extenuating circumstances for what she did, Vriska still did those things. She has to come to terms with that and forgive herself for it.

Vriska has learned from Vrissy! Suffering is not what makes you strong. Just as the muscles of a body builder tend to be weaker, more limited, and even useless compared to those of an athlete, suffering often comes with just as much that weakens you. Strength always has to come from within. Someone's strength who gets there through finding something or someone to be strong for is just as valid as someone who gets there through pursuit of an ambition is just as valid as someone who gets there through hardship is just as valid as, well, any path that gets you there. It's a bitter pill if you're the one who's suffered. But it is the truth.

Even on Alternia, none of this was ever fine. Even by their standards, her childhood was full of abuse and violence.

Man! The team is determined to make Momfang's twisting form as creepy as they can for mostly still images!

I don't know if Beforan Lusus could be like this, or if this quirk was part of Scratch's work. But we clearly see that some Lusus just weren't good guardians, despite coevolution. "But so are some parents!" I hear you cry! That's still different. While it's possible in the vast variety of humanity to be raised by a true monster, most abusive parents are still human. There are paths victims of abuse can take to find comfort or even peace and understanding because of this.

Vriska's "mom" is literally a spider, an animalistic predator. "HUNGRY. KILL. FUCK. EAT. FEED." On earth, even when spiders demonstrate sentience and intelligence, it is from an entirely different evolutionary path. We could not relate to the mind of a spider. And neither can Vriska.

There are many reasons why a parent may become abusive.

Vriska's was abusive because that helped it find prey.

Yep. This is not about what Momfang wants. It's about what Vriska wants. "And wasn't considering it now, to 8e clear." Again. Spider!

Huh! But that doesn't stop Vriska's image of Mindfang from being curious.

Vriska knows part of what's wrong. But as most of us know all too well, knowing what a problem is only the first step in fixing it. All you can do is try to catch yourself when "you're doing it again," while also trying to not make that become something you're constantly on guard about.

As was Nannasprite! You're supposed to learn form each of these "sessions" and use that to help with the next.

We've often believed that what we read of Mindfang's journal was tame. Homesmut Mindfang is apparently canon.

No Momfang! No! You do not get to use Mayor callbacks!

Vriska knows what she wants. How does she prove it? Killing or being eaten seems like it's just more of the same. This could just be as simple as walking away.

Only way to win is not to play. It was always a false binary. There was always another option, it was just a case of seeing it.

Let's not stop there though! I feel like we know enough now about how this works to start making some predictions.

So the Cueball suggests Scratch. He also played a great role in Vriska's life and actions. How Vriska needs to grow past him is trickier. Scratch was only ever using her, and I'm pretty sure Vriska knows this. Now she's dealt with Momfang, though, I don't think she'd get hung up on him. He is considerably cannier than Momfang, but this still feels like a misdirect. It could potentially lead to Rose. She's the other Hero of Light after all, and she and Vriska have both Scratch and the Cueball in common. I'm willing to bet Vriska didn't take enough advantage of Rose's presence on the meteor. This might create a scenario where she just has to learn from her fellow Hero.

Then we have a feather. This is probably the hardest to draw any conclusions from. The only character in Homestuck connected to feathers is Dave. Another potential hero to learn from. It's just hard to imagine not having to reconcile with Terezi, and I'm pretty sure she's not the 8ball. But I also can't think of how the feather connects her to . . .

Scales! It's a bit of a reach, but scales and feathers do have a connection. Also, why would Vriska have a feather? Maybe it's a quill that she used in her FLARPing days? Either way, I'm gonna say the feather is Terezi. Mostly because it's what I want.

The 8ball will be (Vriska). Vriska needs to come to terms with her Game Over self. She needs to realize that it not only was she wrong to look down on her, but that (Vriska) was always right to just look for happiness. (Vriska) was always valid and deserves to lose those parenthesis. Even if they are really convenient.

Act 3 Ending Predictions!

(page 1074-1081)

This update is mostly tying up some loose ends – important, but not super exciting. Page 1074 confirms that Jade pesters John immediately after waking, repeating their conversation from page 652 during which Jade encourages John to keep taking Nanna’s advice, among other things. Page 1075 clarifies how Jade’s future visions work, for anyone who found the recent flash confusing – I like that this is explained, so that casual readers can still follow the plot. This page also tells us that Jade has never seen Bec on Prospit before, so I’m leaning towards there just being one Bec, who teleported to Prospit today because he wanted to protect Jade from the white Skaian powerup.

Jade also says it’s Bec’s birthday, which doesn’t track to me unless Jade’s visions come with an understanding of exactly when they happened/will happen. I can believe this, because she’s so certain in advance that April 13, 2009 is ‘the big day’ (p.838). She could have seen a calendar in a vision or something, but an innate understanding is a simpler explanation (and will make Hussie’s life easier, probably).

Bec napping in front of Grandpa Harley (p.1076) is sweet. If Bec is 4 billion years old (a LOT of candles, as Jade says), he was probably best friends with Grandpa Harley before Jade, and others before him, and is still protective of Grandpa now. Also, despite his ridiculously powerful radiation and teleportation powers, Bec is susceptible to playing fetch and to delicious steak (p.980), and to taking naps after a busy day. Jade will probably exploit these further, and ominous planet agents could also exploit these, if they try to kidnap Bec when Jade enters the game.

Jade shoots her harpoon to the exact pillar that WV will try to appearify the cable from (p.1009). She may or may not be aware of this time loop, but she definitely knows she has to put the blue package in the same place, which WV will accidentally appearify before the cable (p.1012). Jade fufilling both of these will close the existing loop, but still leaves the rest of the package’s journey open ended for now, and I don’t expect that to get wrapped up this act.

Meanwhile, Rose is still coping with her house being on fire by focusing entirely on Something Else. It looks like she’s done loads of work on John’s house, but really she’s just copy-pasted large chunks of his house on top of one another – and besides a precarious looking part near the top left, it’s a lot more stable than the platforms were. Apparently this has been happening while John was alchemizing (p.1052-69), as page 1081 is just a zoom-out of that final alchemy page, and the extra weight hasn’t shaken the house enough to distract John. Rose has almost built up to the First Gate, which means….

NANNASPRITE: When you pass through the first gate, everything will change. You will find the place where the constellations dance beneath the clouds. And then your true work may begin. NANNASPRITE: Hoo hoo hoo! (p.885)

I can’t wait to go here – ‘the place where the constellations dance beneath the clouds’ is so evocative, and if Skaia and Prospit are anything to go by, this place will be beautiful. My guess is that these gates are also portals to different levels, and on each level, John will need to complete some objective (possibly also picking up rare grist that isn’t available anywhere else), make his way back to his house, do some level ups and alchemizing so that he’s powerful enough for the next location, Ascend (p.759) through the house (which Rose by this point should have built up to the next gate) killing ever more powerful enemies along the way, and repeat the loop for the first six gates, with the seventh taking him to Skaia and the endgame, where he should meet up with the other players if they’ve all succeeded in their server and client goals. The game as designed is probably only winnable if all players make it to Skaia, but there may be hacks, cheats and exploits that could change that.

In today’s newspost (/news/12-30-09 in the Collection), Hussie has also said that the end of Act 3 will ‘probably be soon’, and that they’ll disappear for a few days when it happens. So it’s likely that Act 3 (currently 323 pages) could be shorter than Act 2 (511 pages), even though it’s juggling more characters, and I’m honestly surprised it’s ending so soon. Here’s my predictions for what has to happen to leave the act on some sort of rare and highly dangerous 9x cliffhanger combo.

John: Will battle his way up through his Tall House and bounce right through that gate.

Rose: Will load the client program as flames spread through the house, ready to begin the entry process the second Dave logs on.

Dave: Will get in touch with Rose and install the server program; we’ll leave off at the moment they connect in game.

Jade: Will ‘deliver’ the gift to WV, closing the stable time loop, and harpoon over to the mystic ruins.

WV: Will perform their mayoral duties, calling a council meeting and a vote on whether AR’s use of military force is acceptable. May sacrifice himself for the future of all cankind.

PM: Will read the note on the gift WV has given her. It will, in some way, tie in with Rose and/or Dave’s story – this package will make its way through all four kids before finally returning to Jade.

AR: Will show the reader what’s inside the mystic ruins that needs to be protected (or protected against) with so much rapid gunfire, tying into Jade’s cliffhanger.

Dad: Will escape from the guards on the ominous planet and go rogue, stealing Jack’s harlequin hat and going to look for John.

Jack Noir: Will fail to keep Dad prisoner and therefore be disgraced by the monarch, leading him to form a sinister gang in an underground hideout with one of his burliest agents.

Act 4, then, will begin with Dave helping Rose to get into the game under conditions where she’s in extreme danger and he’s still being an asshole (character development isn’t immediate, after all), Jade exploring the ruins, and John finally no longer being h. No longer being homest. I can’t even say it

Around 2012 when Homestuck was at its peak, I got the idea of making a gimmick Tumblr blog called "CG Reads Homestuck." The premise would have been a liveblog of Homestuck, not by Karkat Vantas, but by an Earth human whose personality is identical in every way to that of Karkat Vantas, typing and reacting as Karkat would. Naturally, his least-favorite character would have been Karkat, because Karkat hating alternate versions of himself is one of his defining traits.

I wrote a list of rules for making things over-the-top in a manner characteristic of Karkat, and the test-posts I had in my notes still failed to be as over-the-top as Karkat. There was a bit in my notes where I referenced a "mobius double-reacharound", followed by "Am I allowed to use phrases like that before they appear in Homestuck, or does it completely louse up the 'first-time liveblogger' metaphor?", a turn of phrase which was plagiarized from Maus by Art Spiegelman. I could already see that I'd lose interest pretty quickly, and imagined answering an ask about my lessened output by mentioning that the novelty had worn off, leaving only "a fake liveblog."

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that if I actually tried to make something like that now, @ephemeralhorror would summon eldritch powers to make grass touch me.

Oh hey, starting us right off with Deepest Lore, as Jade can apparently make shields. We've never really seen her "natural" Witch of Space powers in the original comic, since she was using First Guardian powers the whole time (or no powers and just gadgets like the soothspecs, back before everyone became X-Men). I've been wondering what she could do au natural, and...apparently it's shields? Would not have called that, but sure.

JADE: between yiffys capture and rescue and finding dave... JADE: like that... JADE: i just feel like my life flashed before my eyes and it made me a little crazy! JADE: after being unconscious for a bit things feel way clearer now

It's still weird to me that Dave's "death" was so recent to the characters. That was in the epilogues! We made a sequel series since then! It got cancelled! Then it got revived! It was a long time!

Being unconscious is Jade's natural state, so naturally it heals her. Also I detect a justification for a small change in Candy Jade's characterization here, like she'll be acting differently that she has been and this is the excuse. Lets stick a pin in that thought, though.

I really do like this characterization of Candy Rose, though (which is apparently also a slight retcon from the original plans, according to the writer commentaries). None of this is real, so she doesn't give a shit about any of it. Her mid-life crisis is worse than John's.

Oh we are hard retconning Candy Jade's personality here. She's not an emotional wreck at all, at least part of it is her clumsy attempt at being Machiavellian. Are they building up to changing Yiffy's backstory, far and away the least popular idea in HS2?

This aspect of Jade, that deep down she's a bit of a wreck but she toughs it out because she hates her own weakness, hasn't really been focused on since Act 4 of the original comic when it got personified in Jadesprite. It's nice to see that aspect referenced again here. I liked Jade's speech justifying Yiffy's existence, it did a lot to make that plot point go down smoother, but I totally buy that Jade herself hated it. Kind of funny that we had six updates of Vriscourse and now I have way more to say about this one expository speech out of Best Girl, but Jade's actually a pretty complex character and her issues are so often glossed over as "Wow she had to live in isolation for three years after her brother and boyfriend randomly exploded and that's kind of sad I guess", so it's nice to spend some time inside her head like this.

One of my pet peeves of the epilogues is that Dave Strider turns into a Bernie Sanders supporter and keeps talking about "neoliberalism" despite living in a wacky future utopia planet and having never lived through the 2016 Democratic Primary that all his talking points were cribbed from, but we have an explanation for that now. It's his wife. Jade was the neoliberal all along.

It doesn’t really matter, in the long run. Important or not, Vriska’s going to fail. Jane’s going to fail, too; really, just about everyone is going to fail to do something that really matters. In an unsuccessful effort to stave off that failure, and perhaps to atone for it on some level, Calliope will sacrifice herself, fruitlessly. You’re not exempt from the firing squad, either. In the imminent battle, you are going to be shot in the head, the bullet burying deep into your moral grey matter and jamming up the works of your conditional immortality, leaving you confined to a hospital bed. You had to pull all kinds of ridiculous, eyebrow-raising Chaos Theory shit to figure that one out. The rat-tail was worth it, your daughter’s anguish aside.

It's generally considered bad writing to have a prophecy not come true, but I think this is bullshit and Rose's Seer of Light powers don't work in a land of pure void.

Man, this was a great update, Jesus. So much shit is going on, and while HS2 and HS:BC have had good moments this is the first time in a long while I've really had that classic Homestuck feeling that made me fall in love with the comic in the first place.
