*Sunburn* — red, painful skin that feels hot to the touch — usually appears within a few hours after too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from sunshine or artificial sources, such as sunlamps.
Intense, repeated sun exposure that results in sunburn increases your risk of other skin damage and certain diseases. These include dry or wrinkled skin, dark spots, rough spots, and skin cancers, such as melanoma. You can usually find sunburn relief with simply home remedies. Sunburn may take several days or longer to fade.
You can prevent sunburn and related conditions by protecting your skin. This is especially important when you're outdoors, even on cool or cloudy days.
Symptoms
Sunburn signs and symptoms include:
Pinkness or redness
Skin that feels warm or hot to the touch
Pain, tenderness and itching
Swelling
Small fluid-filled blisters, which may break
Headache, fever, nausea and fatigue if the sunburn is severe
Any exposed part of your body — including your earlobes, scalp and lips — can burn. Even covered areas can burn if, for example, your clothing has a loose weave that allows ultraviolet (UV) light through. Your eyes, which are extremely sensitive to the sun's UV light, also can burn. Sunburned eyes may feel painful or gritty.
Signs and symptoms of sunburn usually appear within a few hours after sun exposure. But it may take a day or longer to know the full extent of your sunburn.
Within a few days, your body may start to heal itself by "peeling" the top layer of damaged skin. After peeling, your skin may temporarily have an irregular color and pattern. A bad sunburn may take several days or longer to heal.
When to see a doctor
See your doctor if the sunburn:
Is blistering and covers a large portion of your body
Is accompanied by a high fever, extreme pain, headache, confusion, nausea or chills
Doesn't improve within a few days
Also seek medical care if you notice signs or symptoms of an infection. These include:
Increasing pain and tenderness
Increasing swelling
Yellow drainage (pus) from an open blister
Red streaks leading away from the open blister.
*Causes*
Skin layers and melanin
Skin layers and melanin
Sunburns are caused by exposure to too much ultraviolet (UV) light. UV radiation is a wavelength of sunlight in a range too short for the human eye to see. Ultraviolet A (UVA) is the type of solar radiation most associated with skin aging (photoaging). Ultraviolet B (UVB) is associated with sunburn. Exposure to both types of radiation is associated with developing skin cancer. Sunlamps and tanning beds also produce UV light and can cause sunburn.
Melanin is the dark pigment in the outer layer of skin (epidermis) that gives your skin its normal color. When you're exposed to UV light, your body protects itself by accelerating the production of melanin. The extra melanin creates the darker color of a tan.
A suntan is your body's way of blocking the UV rays to prevent sunburn and other skin damage. But the protection only goes so far. The amount of melanin you produce is determined genetically. Many people simply don't produce enough melanin to protect the skin well. Eventually, UV light causes the skin to burn, bringing pain, redness and swelling.
You can get sunburn on cool, hazy or cloudy days. As much as 80 percent of UV rays pass through clouds. Snow, sand, water and other surfaces can reflect UV rays, burning your skin as severely as direct sunlight.
*Risk factors*
Risk factors for sunburn include:
Having light skin, blue eyes, and red or blond hair
Living or vacationing somewhere sunny, warm or at high altitude
Working outdoors
Mixing outdoor recreation and drinking alcohol
Having a history of sunburn
Regularly exposing unprotected skin to UV light from sunlight or artificial sources, such as tanning beds
Taking a drug that makes you more likely to burn (photosensitizing medications)
Complications
Intense, repeated sun exposure that results in sunburn increases your risk of other skin damage and certain diseases. These include premature aging of your skin (photoaging) and skin cancer.
Premature aging of your skin
Sun exposure and repeated sunburns accelerate the skin's aging process, making you look older than you are. Skin changes caused by UV light are called photoaging. The results of photoaging include:
Weakening of connective tissues, which reduces the skin's strength and elasticity
Deep wrinkles
Dry, rough skin
Fine red veins on your cheeks, nose and ears
Freckles, mostly on your face and shoulders
Dark or discolored spots (macules) on your face, back of hands, arms, chest and upper back — also called solar lentigines (len-TIJ-ih-neze)
Precancerous skin lesions
Precancerous skin lesions appear as rough, scaly patches in areas that have been damaged by the sun. They may be whitish, pink, tan or brown. They're usually found on the sun-exposed areas of the head, face, neck and hands of light-skinned people. These patches can evolve into skin cancer. They're also called actinic keratoses (ak-TIN-ik ker-uh-TOE-seez) and solar keratoses.
*Skin cancer*
Excessive sun exposure, even without sunburn, increases your risk of skin cancer, such as melanoma. It can damage the DNA of skin cells. Sunburns in childhood and adolescence may increase your risk of developing melanoma later in life.
Skin cancer develops mainly on areas of the body most exposed to sunlight, including the scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms, hands and legs. Skin cancer on the leg is more common in women than in men.
Some types of skin cancer appear as a small growth or a sore that bleeds easily, crusts over, heals and then reopens. With melanoma, an existing mole may change or a new, suspicious-looking mole may develop. A type of melanoma called lentigo maligna develops in areas of long-term sun exposure. It starts as a tan flat spot that slowly darkens and enlarges.
See your doctor if you notice a new skin growth, a bothersome change in your skin, a change in the appearance or texture of a mole, or a sore that doesn't heal.
*Eye damage*
The sun can also burn your eyes. Too much UV light damages the retina, lens or cornea. Sun damage to the lens can lead to clouding of the lens (cataracts). Sunburned eyes may feel painful or gritty. Sunburn of the cornea is also called snow blindness.
*Prevention*
Use these methods to prevent sunburn, even on cool, cloudy or hazy days. And be extra careful around water, snow and sand because they reflect the sun's rays. In addition, UV light is more intense at high altitudes.
Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The sun's rays are strongest during these hours, so try to schedule outdoor activities for other times. If you can't do that, limit the length of time you're in the sun. Seek shade when possible.
Avoid sun tanning and tanning beds. Using tanning beds to obtain a base tan doesn't decrease your risk of sunburn.
Cover up. When outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat and clothing that covers you, including your arms and legs. Dark colors offer more protection, as do tightly woven fabrics. Consider using outdoor gear specially designed to provide sun protection. Check the label for its ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), which indicates how effectively a fabric blocks damaging sunlight. The higher the number, the better.
Use sunscreen frequently and generously. Apply water-resistant sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF of 30 or greater and broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. About 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors, apply sunscreen generously on skin that won't be protected by clothing.
Put on more sunscreen every 40 to 80 minutes, or sooner if it has washed off from swimming or sweating. If you're also using insect repellent, apply the sunscreen first. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend products that combine an insect repellent with a sunscreen.
The Food and Drug Administration requires all sunscreen to retain its original strength for at least three years. Check the sunscreen labels for directions on storing and expiration dates. Throw sunscreen away if it's expired or more than three years old.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using other forms of sun protection, such as shade or clothing, for babies and toddlers. Keep them cool and hydrated. You may use sunscreen on babies and toddlers when sun protective clothing and shade aren't available. The best products for them are those that contain physical blockers (titanium oxide, zinc oxide), as they may cause less skin irritation.
Wear sunglasses when outdoors. Choose sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Check the UV rating on the label when buying new glasses. Darker lenses are not necessarily better at blocking UV rays. It also helps to wear sunglasses that fit close to your face and have wraparound frames that block sunlight from all angles.
Be aware of medications that increase your sensitivity to the sun. Common drugs that make you more sensitive to sunlight include antihistamines, ibuprofen, certain antibiotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics and some cholesterol-lowering drugs. Talk with your pharmacist about your medication side effects.

homeopathy is the specific practice of diluting ingredients extensively in a particular way, based on the idea that something related to an illness (e.g. a toxic substance that causes similar symptoms) can be used to treat that illness. the ingredient intended to treat the illness is so dilute that it is essentially or actually no longer there. it is not a catch-all term for alternative medicine or pseudoscientific medical practices

Another word prompt, bed.
Guess what, Anon? You inspired me to write the sickfic! :)
When he picks her up outside the club that night, he looks awful. His face is a little sweaty and pale—even paler than usual—and he can’t stop coughing, even though he’s clearly trying not to, taking small swigs from the plastic water bottle he’s got jammed between the seat and the door. She knew he had gotten sick a couple days ago, but this looks way worse than just the little cold he had mentioned.
“Have you taken anything?” she asks as he pulls up in front of her house.
Igor shakes his head and she wants to fucking kick him because why wouldn’t you take something that at the very least might make you feel a bit better?
“Come inside,” she says. “We’ve got Tylenol and maybe some cough drops, I think.”
By the time she gets him in the house, it’s clear he’s not doing well at all. He’s staggering up the porch steps, his forehead covered in a sheen of sweat, and even before they get to the bathroom he starts coughing again and can’t stop, each one loud and thick with mucus.
She points to her bed. “Dude, go fuckin’ lie down.”
After helping him get his shoes and his hoodie off, she pulls the comforter over him and then heads to the bathroom to look for anything she can give him. She had some DayQuil a while back, but the box is empty; there’s the Extra Strength Tylenol in the medicine cabinet and a couple of menthol-flavored cough drops that look a little fuzzy but still good. Armed with the meds and a full glass of water, she comes back into her room to see what might work.
“Hey,” she says, sitting down next to him on the edge of the bed. Her hand goes up to feel his forehead, but it’s so hot that she pulls back in immediate surprise. “Fuck.”
She makes him sit up to take the Tylenol, which only sets off another fit of coughing. Ani takes the glass and wraps her arms around his broad shoulders, thinking that just holding him might help to contain it. The heat coming off his body is obvious now and she doesn’t need to find a thermometer to know he’s got a fever.
“You know you’re really fuckin’ sick, right?” she asks once he’s lying down again. “You thought about going to see a doctor?”
He shakes his head. “I don’t have insurance.”
“What about urgent care?” It’s a dumb question because without insurance urgent care would be still be expensive as hell. She doesn’t have insurance either, and the times she’s had to pay out of pocket for emergencies it’s felt like fucking highway robbery. Mostly she gets by with over-the-counter medications and some homeopathic crap her mother got her onto.
“I thought I will wait until I am better.” He coughs again, the rough spasms shaking his body.
“I don’t think you’re getting better. I think we gotta call somebody.”
The problem is that she doesn’t really know who to call. A quick internet search of his symptoms just lists a billion different things, and it isn’t like Google can just magically make a bottle of prescription pills appear anyway. She could try to haul him to an urgent care place, but she can’t drive a car and he shouldn’t be. It sucks feeling so helpless, just watching him sweat and shake and cough and not being able to do anything to help him. In so many ways he takes care of her—picking her up after work, taking her places, making sure she’s comfortable and safe—and now that he needs taking care of, she wants to be the one that’s there for him.
For a while Ani sits upright on the bed beside him, offering nothing more than her presence, when she realizes there’s somebody she might be able to call.
It’s a long shot—he might not even respond this early in the morning—but it never fucking hurts to try, right?
The number she texts belongs to an old client, a guy she used to see outside the club every so often for sex and the occasional blow job. He was older, in his fifties, but nice, and they parted on good terms when he started dating a woman and didn’t want to mess around on her. More importantly, though, he’s a doctor, working at one of those big fancy hospitals in the city. She has no idea what kind of doctor—they didn’t really talk about his work all that much—but he went to medical school, so he must know something about illness and how to treat it.
Luckily, he texts back and after a little sweet-talking on her part agrees to get on FaceTime and talk to Igor about his symptoms.
It's difficult with the coughing and Igor’s accent and at one point Ani has to take over and explain what she’s seeing, then put her ear up against Igor’s chest as he breathes so she can describe the sound.
It’s most likely pneumonia, her old client tells them, probably in both lungs. But they’d need to go to a hospital and have some tests done to be sure.
Ani’s immediately worried. Pneumonia sounds bad—people fucking die from pneumonia, don’t they? He tells them, no, not if the patient is young and healthy, as Igor is. But antibiotics will help, along with rest and pain relievers.
She asks if he can prescribe the antibiotics, and he hesitates, as Igor technically isn’t his patient. But she’s not going to take no for an answer and with her sweetest, sultriest, only-for-clients voice asks again, batting her eyelashes and pouting a little until he agrees to call in a prescription for the cheapest generic to the local pharmacy.
“Why you don’t speak to me that nicely?” Igor weakly mutters while she's zipping up her boots.
“Just get some sleep, dude.”
His eyes are shut before she’s out the door.
Walking through the living room, she sees Vera, who’s sitting on the couch with a bowl of cereal in front of her and scrolling on her phone.
“Your boyfriend woke me up with his coughing,” she says. “What’s he doing here?”
“He’s not—” Ani pauses, not even wanting to try to explain anything about her and Igor to her sister. “He’s sick and I’m taking care of him.”
Vera looks at her in disbelief. “By leaving?”
Ani crosses her arms over her chest, knowing that she doesn’t really have time for this bullshit, much less from Vera, whose own boyfriend is arguably the most annoying fuckhead in the Tri-State area.
“I’m going to go pick up a fuckin’ prescription. I’ll be back in a minute.”
At the pharmacy she pays the full non-insurance price—even with generic it’s ridiculous—and picks up some more DayQuil and cough drops. She doesn’t know what he prefers so she gets the menthol and the honey-lemon and the cherry. On the way back she stops at the deli and buys some chicken soup and saltines. He might not want to eat yet, but the soup will still be good reheated.
Igor is still a large blanket-covered lump in her bed when she gets back. She drops the bags on the floor and sits next to him, her hand reaching for his forehead again. He’s still pretty hot, although maybe the Tylenol has helped a little. She runs her hand around the top of his head, feeling the soft prickle, and out of some impulse she can’t even name leans down to lightly kiss his temple.
“I got your medicine,” she murmurs. “You’re gonna have to sit up to take it.”
His eyes are still closed, but there’s a tiny curl at the edge of his mouth. “You think I am not going to die now?”
“I got you soup, so you better not fuckin’ die on me.”
“Okay, deal,” he says. His eyes open a little, revealing that shade of blue that she can never quite get used to, no matter how many times she sees it. “You did not need to do this for me.” His hand slips out from under the blanket and finds hers, the touch feverishly warm, but solid enough to feel reassuring. “Thank you, Ani.”
She doesn’t say anything—she doesn’t dare, not with her heart pushing against her ribs the way that it is—but instead kicks off her boots and climbs in next to him. He’s going to need to start taking the antibiotic soon, but for now they both can rest, lying beside each other on her bed, warm morning light streaming in through the windowpane.

Kidney stones are small masses of salts and minerals that form inside the kidneys and may travel down the urinary tract. Kidney stones range in size from just a speck to as large as a ping pong ball. Signs and symptoms of kidney stones include blood in the urine, and pain in the abdomen, groin, or flank. About 5% of people develop a kidney stone in their lifetime.
Facts
• A kidney stone is a hard, crystalline mineral material formed within the kidney or urinary tract.
• One in every 20 people develops kidney stones at some point in their life.
• Kidney stones form when there is a decrease in urine volume and/or an excess of stone-forming substances in the urine.
• Dehydration is a major risk factor for kidney stone formation.
• Symptoms of a kidney stone include flank pain (the pain can be quite severe) and blood in the urine (hematuria).
• People with certain medical conditions, such as gout, and those who take certain medications or supplements are at risk for kidney stones.
• Diet and hereditary factors are also related to stone formation.
• Diagnosis of kidney stones is best accomplished using an ultrasound, intravenous pyleography (IVP), or a CT scan.
• Most kidney stones will pass through the ureter to the bladder on their own with time.
• Treatment includes pain-control medications and, in some cases, medications to facilitate the passage of urine.
• If needed, lithotripsy or surgical techniques may be used for stones which do not pass through the ureter to the bladder on their own.
A kidney stone is a hard, crystalline mineral material formed within the kidney or urinary tract. Kidney stones are a common cause of blood in the urine (hematuria) and often severe pain in the abdomen, flank, or groin. Kidney stones are sometimes called renal calculi.
Anyone may develop a kidney stone, but people with certain diseases and conditions or those who are taking certain medications are more susceptible to their development. Urinary tract stones are more common in men than in women. Most urinary stones develop in people 20 to 49 years of age, and those who are prone to multiple attacks of kidney stones usually develop their first stones during the second or third decade of life. People who have already had more than one kidney stone are prone to developing further stones.
In residents of industrialized countries, kidney stones are more common than stones in the bladder. The opposite is true for residents of developing areas of the world, where bladder stones are the most common. This difference is believed to be related to dietary factors.
A family history of kidney stones is also a risk factor for developing kidney stones.
Uric acid kidney stones are more common in people with chronically elevated uric acid levels in their blood (hyperuricemia).
A small number of pregnant women develop kidney stones, and there is some evidence that pregnancy-related changes may increase the risk of stone formation. Factors that may contribute to stone formation during pregnancy include a slowing of the passage of urine due to increased progesterone levels and diminished fluid intake due to a decreasing bladder capacity from the enlarging uterus. Healthy pregnant women also have a mild increase in their urinary calcium excretion. However, it remains unclear whether the changes of pregnancy are directly responsible for kidney stone formation or if these women have another underlying factor that predisposes them to kidney stone formation.
Kidney stones form when there is a decrease in urine volume and/or an excess of stone-forming substances in the urine. The most common type of kidney stone contains calcium in combination with either oxalate or phosphate. A majority of kidney stones are calcium stones. Other chemical compounds that can form stones in the urinary tract include uric acid, magnesium ammonium phosphate, and the amino acid cysteine.
Dehydration from reduced fluid intake or strenuous exercise without adequate fluid replacement increases the risk of kidney stones. Obstruction to the flow of urine can also lead to stone formation. In this regard, climate may be a risk factor for kidney stone development, since residents of hot and dry areas are more likely to become dehydrated and susceptible to stone formation.
Kidney stones can also result from infection in the urinary tract. These are known as struvite or infection stones. Metabolic abnormalities, including inherited disorders of metabolism, can alter the composition of the urine and increase an individual's risk of stone formation.
A number of different medical conditions can lead to an increased risk for developing kidney stones:
• Gout results in chronically increased amount of uric acid in the blood and urine and can lead to the formation of uric acid kidney stones.
• Hypercalciuria (high calcium in the urine), another inherited condition, causes stones in more than half of cases. In this condition, too much calcium is absorbed from food and excreted into the urine, where it may form calcium phosphate or calcium oxalate kidney stones.
• Other conditions associated with an increased risk of kidney stones include hyperparathyroidism, kidney diseases such as renal tubular acidosis, and other inherited metabolic conditions, including cystinuria and hyperoxaluria.
• Chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension) are also associated with an increased risk of developing kidney stones.
• People with inflammatory bowel disease are also more likely to develop kidney stones.
• Those who have undergone intestinal bypass or ostomy surgery are also at increased risk for kidney stones.
• Some medications also raise the risk of kidney stones. These medications include some diuretics, calcium-containing antacids, and the protease inhibitor indinavir (Crixivan), a drug used to treat HIV infection.
• Dietary factors and practices may increase the risk of stone formation in susceptible individuals. In particular, inadequate fluid intake predisposes to dehydration, which is a major risk factor for stone formation. Other dietary practices that may increase an individual's risk of forming kidney stones include a high intake of animal protein, a high-salt diet, excessive sugar consumption, excessive vitamin D supplementation, and excessive intake of oxalate-containing foods such as spinach. Interestingly, low levels of dietary calcium intake may alter the calcium-oxalate balance and result in the increased excretion of oxalate and a propensity to form oxalate stones.
• Hyperoxaluria as an inherited condition is uncommon and is known as primary hyperoxaluria. The elevated levels of oxalate in the urine increase the risk of stone formation. Primary hyperoxaluria is much less common than hyperoxaluria due to dietary factors as mentioned above.
• While some kidney stones may not produce symptoms (known as "silent" stones), people who have kidney stones often report the sudden onset of excruciating, cramping pain in their low back and/or side, groin, or abdomen. Changes in body position do not relieve this pain. The abdominal, groin, and/or back pain typically waxes and wanes in severity, characteristic of colicky pain (the pain is sometimes referred to as renal colic). It may be so severe that it is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The pain has been described by many as the worst pain of their lives, even worse than the pain of childbirth or broken bones. Kidney stones also characteristically cause bloody urine. If infection is present in the urinary tract along with the stones, there may be fever and chills. Sometimes, symptoms such as difficulty urinating, urinary urgency, penile pain, or testicular pain may occur due to kidney stones.
The diagnosis of kidney stones is suspected when the typical pattern of symptoms is noted and when other possible causes of the abdominal or flank pain are excluded. Which is the ideal test to diagnose kidney stones is controversial. Imaging tests are usually done to confirm the diagnosis. Many patients who go to the emergency room will have a non-contrast CT scan done. This can be done rapidly and will help rule out other causes for flank or abdominal pain. However, a CT scan exposes patients to significant radiation, and recently, ultrasound in combination with plain abdominal X-rays have been shown to be effective in diagnosing kidney stones.
In pregnant women or those who should avoid radiation exposure, an ultrasound examination may be done to help establish the diagnosis.
Most kidney stones eventually pass through the urinary tract on their own within 48 hours, with ample fluid intake. Ketorolac (Toradol), an injectable anti-inflammatory drug, and narcotics may be used for pain control when over-the-counter pain control medications are not effective. Toradol, aspirin, and NSAIDs must be avoided if lithotripsy is to be done because of the increased risk of bleeding or if there is impaired kidney function. Intravenous pain medications can be given when nausea and vomiting are present.
Although there are no proven home remedies to dissolve kidney stones, home treatment may be considered for patients who have a known history of kidney stones. Since most kidney stones, given time, will pass through the ureter to the bladder on their own, treatment is directed toward control of symptoms. Home care in this case includes the consumption of plenty of fluids. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be used as pain medication if there is no contraindication to its use. If further pain medication is needed, stronger narcotic pain medications may be recommended.
There are several factors that influence the ability to pass a stone. These include the size of the person, prior stone passage, prostate enlargement, pregnancy, and the size of the stone. A 4 mm stone has an 78% chance of passage while a 5 mm stone has a 18% chance. Stones larger than 9 mm to 10 mm rarely pass without specific treatment.
Rather than having to undergo treatment, it is best to avoid kidney stones in the first place when possible. It can be especially helpful to drink more water, since low fluid intake and dehydration are major risk factors for kidney stone formation.
Depending on the cause of the kidney stones and an individual's medical history, changes in the diet or medications are sometimes recommended to decrease the likelihood of developing further kidney stones. If one has passed a stone, it can be particularly helpful to have it analyzed in a laboratory to determine the precise type of stone so specific prevention measures can be considered.
People who have a tendency to form calcium oxalate kidney stones may be advised to limit their consumption of foods high in oxalate, such as spinach, rhubarb, Swiss chard, beets, wheat germ, and peanuts. Also drinking lemon juice or lemonade may be helpful in preventing kidney stones.
Most kidney stones will pass on their own, and successful treatments have been developed to remove larger stones or stones that do not pass. People who have had a kidney stone remain at risk for future stones throughout their lives.
For some people who have had many kidney stones, home care may be appropriate. When passing a kidney stone, drinking lots of fluid is important. In fact, this is the most important home care measure. Medications may help control the pain (as described previously). However, if it is the first time one has had symptoms suggestive of a kidney stone, it is important to see a doctor right away.
Homeopathy has good and very effective medicines for all kind of stones. They have good results.

Warnings and context
Hello, first of all I'd like to introduce myself, I'm a person who loves HTTYD and period stories with science fiction and I've decided to share this little idea with some people, first of all English is not my mother tongue and I'm using an internet translator, so I apologise for any mistakes. Anyway, I think it's interesting to start with some warnings, this is going to be a NSFW fanfic, it will have heavy themes, violence, and +18 scenes, so be warned, specific warnings will be given for each chapter. I took a lot of inspiration from Outlander to write this fanfic, so if you're interested I suggest you read the book or watch the series, it's a very good medium, in any case, this story won't be historically accurate, let alone scientific, but I'll endeavour to bring a real and immersive experience to all of you. This is a fanfic of (oc x canon) and it will be an age up fanfic, Hiccup will be 23 and so will the other characters, so rest assured. Anyway, I think I've gone on too long, I hope you like it!

The traveller - Chapter 1
The islands in the Scandinavian region have always been freezing cold, and something about the damp, chilly climate always got on Ana's nerves. The young woman never liked the cold very much, and coming from a tropical country made things even worse in her view. Muddy boots, thick coats and raincoats, she felt like an inflatable doll and, on top of that, she felt the tip of her nose freezing. Ana was never a fan of the cold and generally everything related to cloudy, rainy and icy weather discouraged her considerably.
But who could blame her? The young woman, who was passionate about everything related to history and religion, had always been a big fan of the Vikings and all the gods associated with them. In addition, she had always been a big fan of witchcraft, so in short, Nordic origins were her paradise.
Combining two completely different fields of study, Ana began her university routine, somehow starting to study medicine. In addition to struggling hard in high school to get into the country's public university, she also passed an archaeology course and, in a not very intelligent decision, decided to attend both courses at the same time.
Poor girl, her routine consisted of studying all the clinical medicine content she could during classes, doing internships at the hospital half the week, spending the other half holed up in laboratories rescuing ancient historical artefacts, and of course doing an internship at the museum to also secure her career as a researcher.
Giving points, looking through microscopes, dazzling the past, guiding children in museums, assisting doctors in surgeries, whether in gynaecology or general practice. The young woman never stopped, always doing something in her free time, and with that, her social life gradually faded away.
With the exception of a dear friend, Liz, the two always met on Thursdays, catching up, watching MasterChef and making some crazy drinks that their hearts desired. Liz insisted that her friend should go out more, meet more people and maybe get some sun, a conversation that was cut short with: ‘I have to focus on my career,’ ‘I need to finish college,’ or simply with the sincere and simple ‘I'm too lazy.’
In two cases, Ana's answers made Liz laugh, and in other cases, they made her worried and try to introduce her to the social world little by little, in small homeopathic doses. The therapist said she needed to explore more, get out of her comfort zone and spend less time on screens or at work, which would leave her with a limited number of people to turn to, but Ana was very happy in her comfort zone and had no desire to try anything new.
And it was at that moment that her dear father said it would be good for her to go on holiday instead of taking on another internship, to go travelling and finally see the islands of Scandinavia, specifically the most rustic and hidden ones.
John had always been a great father, the best possible for his daughter, who had always sought security and wisdom, things that could help her with her future and concerns, and although it wasn't always the answer she was looking for, just listening to him and being close to all the love and affection he could give her always brought her comfort.
After much insistence from her father and encouragement from her friend, Ana went on a trip with Liz to the Scandinavian islands. They took a plane, gossiped the whole trip, laughed and had a good whisky at the airport, ready to face long hours of travel.
During the flight, Ana had brief flashes of events, using her beloved psychiatric medication to sleep. In addition to the plane being dark and at a very comfortable temperature, the young woman slept the entire flight, sometimes being awakened by her companion, who kindly saved snacks and cookies left over from her meals for her friend.
After taking a train and three boats, the two finally checked into an old hotel near the island's seafront, in a good location. It smelled a little musty and salty, but there was something strangely comforting about this unfamiliar environment, almost like home. The two took a shower in the old gas shower, put on warm pyjamas, drank some of the whisky they had brought in their suitcase, talked about what they would do tomorrow, and then fell asleep.
Ana's night was restless, she got tangled up in conversations, her dreams confused, the smell of embers, sea air, coal, mud and dew, leaves sticking to her skin, mud buried up to her knees. Confused voices shouted in her ears, strange Nordic chants that made her dizzy, but hands grabbed her skin and scratched it in a confusing way, a loud whistle mixed with nausea and a severe migraine.
She woke up surrounded by her pile of blankets, which looked more like a nest, her heart beating wildly in her chest and her mouth dry. Ana rubbed her feet together for warmth, her hands messing up her short, spiky hair, grabbing her small discoloured strand and then intertwining it between her fingers.
Her breathing gradually returning to normal, her feet sinking into the mattress, her fingers clinging to the sheets, she ran her hands over her face, searching for a little tact and real feelings. When she calmed down, her hand reached for her mobile phone in the distance, her hands instinctively turned on the device, and the time flashed, giving her a slight headache.
Her eyes adjusted to the light, and she was able to see the numbers on the display. 3:00 a.m. She sighed and threw herself onto the bed, stretching as far as she could. The young woman rubbed her ribs, feeling her bones move, another familiar and calming sensation.
The melody remained in her head, resonating softly as if it were a kind of mantra. Ana closed her eyes and waited for her mind to stop racing with thoughts. She tried to think about the walks in the ruins of the island. That should mean something good. She would need a lot of energy to venture out and discover as much as she could about the whole culture, so she should rest.
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and waited to fall asleep.
At dawn, Ana dragged herself from bed to the bathroom, still a little dizzy from the sudden change in time zone. She turned on the tap to the hottest water she could and rubbed her hands calmly, feeling the texture of the water and its temperature.
Her eyes went to the mirror and there was her tired face, with deep dark circles under her eyes, uncombed hair and stubborn strands out of place. She didn't bother to comb them, she just took a few small strands and braided them as best she could, decorating them with small pieces of gold metal, making her unruly and uncontrolled hair look more beautiful.
Next to her was a small black bag, inside which were various types of medicine. Ana took one of the small pink pills, placed it delicately under her tongue, filled a glass with cold water, and swallowed it all.
She swallowed without difficulty, the water sliding smoothly down her throat. The young woman massaged her forehead a few times before looking at herself miserably. It wasn't that she didn't think she was a beautiful person, it was just that mornings had a special way of completely ruining her mood.
She wore a tight black turtleneck shirt that fit snugly around her breasts and waist, military green jeans with warm wool tights underneath. Over it all was a black waterproof winter jacket, and she wore two brown leather boots that were lined with synthetic animal fur for warmth.
Liz was waiting for her in the bedroom, dressed in warm purple and white clothes that made her look beautiful. Her friend had always been taller than her, a strong and stunning woman. A small smile blossomed on Ana's lips as she approached quietly.
Her smaller, curvy body approached her best friend. Liz welcomed her with a warm hug, and the two squeezed each other in comfort, giggling softly. They stayed like that for a few moments, processing everything that life and the world had to show them.
‘Did you sleep well?’ Ana asked quietly as she laid her head on Liz's chest. She kept her hands on her friend's shoulders, looking at her with the affection and patience that only someone as loving and pleasant as her would have in the morning.
‘I slept well, the beds here are very comfortable to lie on and the blankets are very warm,’ Liz hummed as she gently caressed Ana's back, who was trying hard to have a decent conversation in the morning.
‘I checked the bus schedule that will take us to the more traditional part of the island, we need to leave in two hours,’ Ana said softly as she pulled out her mobile phone and showed her sophisticated alarm clock system. Liz smiled sweetly as she looked at it.
‘Okay, so all we need to do is have a nice Scandinavian-style breakfast and pack a backpack with everything we need for a good trip,’ Liz said as she stretched and pulled out her phone to check her schedule. After putting her phone in her sweatshirt pocket and putting on a pair of lilac All Stars, she turned to Ana.
She had her back turned as she checked the things she had put in her backpack. ‘I got ready last night, I managed to separate all the equipment that could be brought to the airport, in addition to all the permitted medicines, of course. We have cereal bars, local guides, a change of clean clothes, a torch and, of course, a pocket knife.’
The young woman had prepared herself, putting together a medical kit with needles, syringes, a small scalpel, sterile thread, alcohol that was purchased at the pharmacy as soon as they arrived in the country, medicine for nausea, headaches, cramps, and finally, good materials for dressing wounds. All of them were stored in a leather case that was perfectly sealed and protected inside.
‘Right, future doctor, I don't think we'll have anyone seriously injured here!’ Liz laughed as she approached Ana, who had already checked her supplies more than once. She turned and gave a simple smile as she cheerfully said, ‘You never know.’
The two walked down, chatting animatedly about what they planned to do in the area, walking back and forth looking for the ideal table where they could enjoy a hearty breakfast.
The options were definitely varied and included lots of seafood and delicious breads that were typical of the region. Ana decided to play it safe and took only one bread, salami, a sweet pastry with strawberries, and a pot of red fruit yoghurt.
Liz took some different pastries and ate some savoury snacks with fruit that were available on the table. The inn itself was not very crowded. The two had come to travel in winter, which is the low season for people interested in taking a trip to Scandinavia at that time of year.
While they were eating, Ana picked up on a few things that the lady in charge of the inn was saying. Ever since they arrived, the girl had suspected that there was something strange about this lady, but she couldn't remember her name. Ana had never been very good with names and found herself constantly confusing the names of the people around her and, in the worst cases, never learning them.
The stories that the people of the region told were mainly about dragons, especially how the people fought bravely against them until there was almost nothing left of the majestic creatures. Both Ana and Liz, as women strongly connected to science and studies, found this story somewhat conspiratorial. They listened to some tales and had a lot of fun with the strange names of the famous Vikings who lived at that time.
But deep down, Ana couldn't help but marvel at what she heard. The world told by legends seemed magical, exciting, eye-catching, much more interesting and vivid than the century in which she lived. Because she studied hard and read a lot, of course she would like to spend just one day there, learn about the customs, get a little taste of what it was like to live in the shoes of those people, and return as quickly as she could.
After all, bathing in tubs where the water didn't always stay warm didn't seem like the most appealing idea, drinking river water and facing the cold of winter without really having the proper equipment for it seemed desperate. But the worst part for her was certainly the rustic and underdeveloped medicine of these peoples, nothing like the dedicated and constantly evolving medicine of the 21st century.
After breakfast, the two walked to the meeting point where the bus would pick them up and take them directly to the wonderful village. While they waited, they marvelled at the rustic architecture, which had a charming touch.
People lived their lives peacefully, following their traditions, which were evident when looking at their houses. There was a strong sense of community, especially in winter, when people seemed to want to stay closer to each other, eating, drinking and entering into a harmony that was unknown to both girls.
The people of this island had always been well-educated and seemed to carry with them a mutual respect that was unlike anywhere else Ana had ever seen. When the bus arrived, the two sat side by side. The guide was enthusiastic and narrated the entire journey, describing the wonderful rocky landscapes, the magnitude of the mountains and snow-covered areas, and the herds of animals grazing in places specially selected for them, all of which gave the trip a different atmosphere.
When the tour came to an end, the guide gave them a specific time frame to explore nature, the village and the ruins as much as they wanted, but kindly reminded them not to disturb the residents, who were just going about their lives and for whom tourism was an important part of their livelihood.
The girls went to a small snack bar that looked very traditional, each of them took a gravlax salmon, ate while walking, seeing everything they could of the quiet life of the residents, taking pictures of the architecture and occasionally sitting on the street and sharing some photos they took with each other.
And then there was Ana, waiting for Liz to go into the middle of the forest and climb a tree to check if it was really a cormorant. Ana squinted as she watched her friend climb as high as she could up that tall tree.
‘Lovey, I'm going to look for some medicinal herbs in the area!’ Ana shouted as she stood on tiptoe and stretched as far as she could to tell Liz what she intended to do, so that she wouldn't be alarmed if she disappeared.
‘Okay! I think I saw some ruins further into the forest. Go there, and I'll meet you as soon as I register this species here.’ Liz replied, but without giving much thought, in one of her hands was a camera ready to take as many photos of the animal as she could.
‘All right, meet me there then.’ And with that, the young student left. She walked calmly as she entered the forest, dodging some bushes that were too wet and taking care where her boots were stepping.
She didn't know how long she'd been walking for, as she went on things got wetter and colder, she rubbed her gloved hands together as she pulled the hood of her cold coat tighter, instinctively one of her hands pulled her rucksack closer to her body.
Ana was feeling a strange sensation, almost as if something was pulling her by the tiny strings of a marionette. A call, whispers came from all sides of the forest, she felt her body shiver, but she didn't know if it was the cold.
And then she arrived, in a clearing. Her hands pushed aside the undergrowth, the damp leaves sticking to her gloves, but she didn't seem to mind and before she could move any further, several figures startled her. Ana ducked instinctively, her eyes wide, her heart pounding in her throat.
‘Witches.’ She whispered softly. Several women of all shapes, bodies and ages, dressed in long white dresses from head to toe, their robes moving with the wind and the footsteps of their owners, their hands dyed a deep black, rings and necklaces adorned them, giving an ethereal air to these women.
They were chanting an ancient song, their voices united in a perfect solo, an almost hypnotic sound, the voices in tune and united, a harmonic melody full of life, the voices echoing through the stone circle, bringing an almost divine sensation to the scene.
Ana had heard these words before, her brain associated them with Old Norse, her hands went to her rucksack and instinctively she began to write the words down, translating them one by one.
“Deep in the forest you shall find, The ancient stones of ancient kind. A hidden world will soon appear, And there shall dwell your heart so near. Through blazing flames your steps will tread, A foreign name shall then be said. Fates and vows will intertwine, And with the beasts, your soul shall shine.”

The witches moved gracefully, holding candles and twirling in their flowing dresses, they didn't seem to mind the cold. The ruins that these women stood in surrounded a circle of stones. The word ‘Volvas’ came to Ana's mind.
The young woman had already learnt about the Vikings, but the mysterious stone circle still had no explanation. Of course, theories have always been made about the constructions over the centuries and the research carried out by great archaeologists, but nothing seemed to really explain it. these explanations always ended up falling into mysticism.
The more Ana listened, the louder their voices became in her mind, her heart raced even more and she felt a warmth spreading through her whole body, her mouth was dry, she felt almost as if she was having an anxiety attack.
Her hands clasped together nervously, she nibbled her lips restlessly, although something in the back of her mind told her to run, something in her heart told her to stay. Her hands began to sketch the movements and dances of these women, she wrote down as much as she could to discuss with her teachers at the latest when she returned home.
The pencil floated across the paper as she drew and looked at the curves; her sketches were fast and erratic; drawing had always been a part of her life.
One of the few activities that she didn't abandon with university was painting and drawing. Whenever she could, she would doodle a few squares, animals and characters from the series she was watching or from books, but she always ended up drawing something on the edges of her binders.
The afternoon sun was bathing the room, sunset always comes early in winter and this was no different, the first shades of reddish purple painted the sky. This gave a supernatural atmosphere to the singing of these women, they didn't look tired and they moved in perfect harmony, as if they had done this many times throughout their lives.
When the music ceased and their movements stopped, Ana felt her breath catch. After a few minutes of silence, the women gathered round and then went back to chatting normally, as if nothing had happened. As soon as there was no one else around and the footsteps were no longer heard, the young woman approached the stone circle.
She stepped timidly into the middle of the circle, took off her rucksack and left it on the ground. With calm, controlled steps she walked around the stones, looking at them one by one, her eyes roaming the length and breadth of the curious monument with great curiosity.
Ana isn't sure why, but she started to feel a little warm. She calmly took off her thermal jacket, leaving only her black woollen sweater to protect her torso. Eager to explore the monument further, she decided to do a scientific analysis of the structure, took off her cold gloves and replaced them with a pair of sterilised latex gloves.
With her suitcase full of equipment under her arm, the young woman proceeded to take a closer look at the structures, groping, feeling and minutely observing the small details that could be analysed.
The stones were neither symmetrical in size nor width, so all Ana could do was try to find an order in her brain so that she could analyse them in order of structure and width, starting with the smallest and working her way up to the largest. In the middle of her research and notes under the mysterious stones.
She remembered her teacher mentioning the material of these structures, the smaller ones being made of blue stones and the larger ones of sarsen stones. But the question on her mind was: ‘Why were they built? And what were the cultural objectives behind them?’ Unfortunately, as a student this could only remain a doubt, which was a cruel reminder that not everything we know will have immediate answers.
When she came to look at the largest of the stones, she noticed that at its base were growing small cetraria islandica, an arctic-alpine lichen. Ana bent down and carefully observed the small plant, her hands gently touching it, she decided it would be a good idea to take a sample, so she retrieved a small clean glass container from her suitcase to place it in, while gently handling the tweezers, her ears began to ring.
At first thinking that this was a natural reaction of the brain, she covered her ears, but as she did so the sound disappeared, which caused the girl a certain amount of strangeness. Frowning, the young woman's eyes travelled to the top of the rock, she stood up, putting her equipment back in her bag, her gaze drawn to a small crack that seemed to be responsible for the unpleasant noise.
Ana stretched out one of her hands and placed it under the rocky surface, intrigued, she braided the crack with her fingers. This only seemed to make the noise worse, the sound became more and more unbearable, a tremendous dizziness took over her body, a flash hit her vision and she felt her body fall backwards.
The heat was unbearable, all she could do was cling to the suitcase and make sure nothing got out of her sight, her fingers trembling from the sensations, she felt as if she had been hit by a shock, a powerful electric current causing pain and tremors throughout the length of her body.
It was like being thrown off a rollercoaster and falling metres below the ground into water that had previously been electrocuted. It was like a deafening thud, the ringing gradually ceased and by then all she was seeing was absolute blackness. ‘Am I going to die?’ Ana asked herself, gradually the sensation passed and was replaced by an intense cold.
Gradually her senses returned to normal, her heartbeat calmed down and her sight returned. It was dark and very cold, Ana didn't know how long she had been out for, her first reaction was to look for the case with her equipment, it was still there. With that certainty, she let out a deep sigh and sat down on the floor.
Her eyes wandered around her surroundings and everything seemed normal in the stone circle, except that her coat and rucksack were no longer there. Her heart raced and then she got up and walked quickly towards the place where her things were supposed to be.
‘Shit, shit, shit, shit!’ She muttered erratically as she came to the realisation that her things must have been stolen, and with an anguished sigh, she clutched the case tightly against her chest. ‘At least something wasn't stolen,’ she said softly as she ran her other hand through her hair.
Ana tried to calm down and think rationally. ‘Well, I can rest assured, I have travel insurance for my mobile phone and my suitcase, is the mobile phone gone? Yes, but the suitcase is still here, which is certainly an excellent sign.’ With that in mind, she let out a long breath of air.
‘Now all I need to do is find Liz and where the group ended up.’ She said aloud, very carefully leaving the stone circle and walking into the woods. For some unknown reason she seemed more closed in and much more sombre. Her steps became more cautious and she began to walk more stealthily.
Smells of wet wood, dew, earth and for some reason dung. She frowned at the stench, her eyes roaming the forest in search of the source of the odour. For some reason her brain told her it was stupid, but she needed to know what in the world could cause such a stench.
After pushing aside some bushes, she saw huge tailings. Ana was really surprised by this, what kind of animal would make faeces of this size and heavens it was surely a carnivorous animal because of the stench. With that in mind, she turned round as quickly as possible because they looked extremely fresh.
Clutching her bag tightly, she continued to walk and search for the trail, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't find it at all. The vegetation was certainly more closed in and looked quite virgin, as if there hadn't been any human interference for a long time.
A strange sensation overtook Ana and she stopped walking. She placed the case on a rock, sat down and began to touch her own body. First her hands examined her head, then her neck, passing by her thyroid. Then her hands went to her ribcage, to her heart and lungs, then to her legs and feet.
Everything was in order, nothing that would cause her to hallucinate, faint or bleed. She was fine, healthy and clearly alive. Ana couldn't help but close her eyes, something wasn't right and she felt it very vividly, it wasn't as if all the vegetation around her could change so suddenly! It didn't make any sense.
Before she could panic and drown in her own paranoia, she heard a noise coming from between the bushes and trees. Her eyes widened and she held her breath, trying her best to remain silent, but whatever was behind the bush realised her presence.
If it was a bear she had to lie down and play dead and pray a lot, if it was a wolf or a puma she would play dead too and pray, of course! In the end, regardless of which predator it was, she had to pray and, well, die so as not to die.
The closer the thing got, the more panicked she felt. Calmly, she lowered herself to the ground and lay down slowly, but of course without letting go of the suitcase or reaching for it, in case she needed to run or was injured, she needed some way to fix herself.
A huge animal appeared, about 10 metres long. A large head full of thorns and large yellowish side eyes, a thorn in the centre of its face completing its snout, a large, wide-open jaw. Its wings were the extensions of what should have been its arms and its legs had long claws that dragged the earth on the ground. But what was most alarming about the animal was its long, spiky tail, and Ana's blood ran cold. That scaly creature was definitely a problem and it didn't look real at all.
Whatever this kind of animal was, which looked VERY similar to a dragon, it caused Ana deep fear. What the hell was she supposed to do with such an animal? Run? Pray? She didn't know, the creature approached her slowly and with great curiosity, but she didn't seem in the least bit tempted to interact and so ended up falling prey to the evil of anxiety and panic, which was to run!
She grabbed hold of the suitcase and ran with all her might, all the adrenaline that had built up in her body was awakened and she had no intention of stopping, her heart was galloping, her breathing was heavy and a desperation she felt was making Ana move, she didn't care if it was real or not, she really didn't want to stay there to find out.
Ana heard the beast grunt and knew that it was probably flying behind her, the animal released thorns near her feet and she jumped in surprise, she couldn't help it and looked back the majestic creature was flying and watching closely, all she could do was hold back an anguished groan and whimper some more.
The woman continued to run, despairing of what she would do next and how she would achieve some kind of miracle and get her out of this unexpected situation. The more she ran, the more she was sure she would die, and that was one of the worst emotions she had ever felt. To make matters worse, the animal began to spit fire. ‘Fuck! You're kidding!’ She screamed as she continued to run in desperation, what the hell was she supposed to do exactly, as she ran the woods around her started to burn and she was in a worse and worse mood, finally she started to smell the sea and that brought a sense of relief, maybe the animal would give up on her if she got in the water.
When she was finally close to the shore, all the happiness she had felt drained away and she had to stop herself from whimpering. A naval battle was taking place at sea, huge ships with huge stone catapults, arrows flying everywhere and more huge winged beasts flying above the scene.
Sinking ships, spitting fire and the gods knew she wanted to get out of here as quickly as possible, seeming to be reminded of why she had come ashore, a warm breath ruffled her hair, she opened her eyes wide and slowly turned her head back.
The beast was staring at her, one of its yellow eyes fixed on her figure, it was grunting and breathing close to her neck. In an unusual move, she threw herself down into the ravine of sand and earth, bringing her arms and head close to her torso and hugging the suitcase tightly. Luckily for her, there were no rocks below while all that happened was that she was covered in sand and dirt and a little sore.
It took her a few minutes to keep running, dizzy and tired, but she felt she couldn't stop, so she kept running towards God knows where. Her steps were clumsy and she felt she had to keep going, to survive and at least get some answers to her doubts and questions.
Not knowing what else to do, she grabbed the suitcase in one of her arms and started shouting, ‘Hey! This way! Help me! Help!’ Ana shouted at the top of her voice to the ships as she rushed away from the dragon, waving her free hand to attract as much attention as she could. She jumped and ran, becoming breathless and her voice more flawed. ‘Somebody! For the love of everything you believe in! I need help!’
When all hope seemed lost and her eyes were beginning to water. One of the dragons that had been flying over the ships began to approach, and before she had any time to react, she was being grabbed by one of the black dragon's arms and being carried away. She clung to the animal while screaming.
Tumblr media
‘Fucking cunt! Fucking son of a bitch!’ The girl screamed in desperation as she clung tighter to the animal. Which now, on closer inspection, is a deep shade of obsidian, the approximately 10 metre long beast held her firmly, but this gave her no comfort.
When Ana realised that she wouldn't be able to save herself and that she would be carried off by the animal, she just held on tighter to the suitcase to make sure it didn't fall through the air. The young woman looked up miserably and noticed that the dragon was staring at her, the green-eyed reptile seemed wary of her, its pupils thin and its breathing heavy as they flew. But something else caught the young woman's attention and that was that there was a person riding the animal.
A man who looked to be about 5'10’, his body athletic and lean, his skin slightly tanned by the sun, a sparse unshaven beard, freckles scattered across his face and neck. With reddish-brown hair and eyes as green as emeralds, he had a serious, focussed expression, a frown, a Roman nose and thick lips.
It would be a lie if Ana said the man wasn't handsome, she tilted her head slightly and seemed to completely forget her situation, but it was a very brief moment. She realised that they were being led straight into the middle of the warships, her first reaction would have been to scream, but she suppressed it, whatever this man was doing, it was serious, he must have had a reason for founding these ships.
The young woman watched with her heart racing as the dragon spat fire and sank yet another ship. The boy shouted, ‘Snotlout, attack the southerners! Astrid, I need you on the front line.’ His voice was very pleasant to the ears, a powerful masculine voice, but at the same time welcoming, which seemed to intrigue her.
Suddenly the boy's eyes focussed on hers, the man's expression went from serious to surprised for a few moments. Ana blinked a few times in confusion and her eyes widened. The boy, seeing her controversial reactions, frowned. Before he could say anything, a huge, massive stone ball was thrown in their direction.
The two of them looked at the ship that had fired, two muscular men were celebrating having hit the boy, the huge dark wooden catapult was already being loaded with a new stone. Ana looked confused, it wasn't often that you saw people hurting others and celebrating afterwards, usually they did it in hiding and then hoped they wouldn't be discovered.
The stone had hit the rider halfway up the dragon's body, he held on tightly to the saddle but grunted, they were spinning in the air and Ana couldn't help herself. ‘Shit! What the fuck!’ She shouted quickly as the flight regained stability. ‘Look here you want to stop!’ The boy said in a voice bathed in pain and irritation, his expression tightening as he clenched his jaw and gripped her arm.
The girl's eyes went from dread to clinical, her expression serious. The knight's arm, or whatever this person was from this animal, was dislocated, clearly out of place and to make matters worse the bone had been broken and was sticking out a little below the shoulder joint. There was a clear deformation under his leather clothes, but he didn't stop fighting and continued giving instructions.
"Tuffnut! Ruffnut! Blow up the middle of the ships, I think that will be enough to end the battle! FishLegs, I need you to take care of the last ships.’ The orders came out hurried but precise, he really seemed focussed on what he should do and how he should do it. The dragon looked at the man and made a sad and regretful sound, he quickly patted the reptile's head. ‘I know buddy.’
‘Hey! I want down!’ Ana shouted amid confusion and a shower of arrows, she was angry, desperate and the last thing she wanted was to take part in an aerial naval battle. The knight looked at her as if he couldn't believe his words. ‘Look, we'll talk when this is over, I'm not finished with you yet.’ The boy said harshly as he ignored the pain in his arm and continued firing at the ships ahead, which was a good solution because they also exploded.
The smell of blood and smoke was everywhere, men screaming, full of burns and fractures, many of them already lifeless floating adrift in the sea, wreckage of ships and even some men hanging from the masts, this was the real scene of violence.
After the other dragons had finished with all the confusion, they gathered at a kind of Viking base. There were several colourful huts, each with its own specific peculiarities. They landed in a large harbour, which seemed to be the centre of the place, a large building with tables inside and a large fireplace to eat around, a place that looked really welcoming.
The place looked good despite the battle, it was heavily protected, looking closer Ana could see that there were other people riding the dragons, one by one, these people gathered on the large wooden deck of the base and then got off their animals.
When she was finally placed on the ground, before she had a chance to run she was held in her arms by the man she had found handsome, she didn't try to struggle, too tired for that, all she did was keep the suitcase tightly hugged to herself, who knows if she stayed silent for as long as she could, it would make for a less tragic end to her strange day.
There was a sense of panic at being held so close to a man, her stomach churned, but she fought down these emotions, she needed to situate herself better and understand what was going on, apparently the situation was almost under control.
‘Who's that?’ A tall, burly man with black hair approached and was curious about her, he looked her up and down and gave her a wink, which made Ana give him an expression of pure displeasure.
Two other people approached, they seemed to be twins, a girl and a boy, both blond with braided hair, slim and tall, they seemed to be analysing them closely. ‘Who is that and why the hell is she wearing pyjamas?’ The female twin asked, her voice rough as she watched the student curiously. ‘And who only wears black in the middle of winter, so out of fashion!’ Her brother commented as he judged her clothes, Ana gave him an icy expression, she didn't seem to want to deal with this kind of situation.
"Hiccup, is she a hunter? When did you find her?" A tall woman with firm muscles and blonde hair tied back in a beautiful braid approached. Her voice was serious, and she seemed suspicious; her eyes wandered over Ana, who simply stood there, mouth agape, as she stared. "Wow, she's beautiful," Ana thought silently.
"I don’t know. I found her at the edge of the beach being chased by a Nadder." Hiccup… was that his name? he said in a firm voice, though there was a clear tone of exhaustion in it. Until then, his companions hadn’t noticed their leader’s injury. Ana did her best to remain quiet.
Another figure came into view — a tall, chubby man with blond hair. He had a gentle expression on his face and approached curiously, though there was clearly some caution toward Ana, who was obviously being treated as an intruder.
"Hiccup, Astrid’s right. Who is she, and what is she carrying?" the blond man asked, and then all eyes turned toward the poor student’s suitcase. She swallowed hard, still holding it close to her body.
"Look, please — I’ve had a horrible day. I don’t know where I am, when I am, or what I did to deserve this. I just want to go home. I don’t even know what being a hunter means to you." Ana said quickly, her words tumbling over each other as she continued to clutch the suitcase, but the group didn’t seem convinced at all.
"Miss, I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to take that suitcase from you," Hiccup said in a serious tone, gripping Ana more firmly. In protest, she struggled in his arms, holding onto the suitcase even tighter.
"Resisting won’t help you!" he warned, but that did nothing to improve her mood. That suitcase was all she had left of her life, and she wasn’t about to let it go.
When the young man brought one of his hands close to her face, our dear student bit him with all the strength she had left. Hiccup let go of her with a grunt, and she bolted to the other side of the space, sitting down on the floor, still clinging to the suitcase.
"Why do you have to make this so difficult?" he asked, rubbing the spot where she had bitten him.
Just when Ana thought she might be safe, the suitcase was yanked from her hands by Astrid. The girl looked up, devastated, and tried to run after it — only to be grabbed by the collar by the blonde’s dragon. Realizing this wasn’t a fight she could win, she let her body go limp and took a deep breath. She needed to start seriously thinking about what was happening to her.
The group opened the suitcase and began inspecting each item one by one. There were vials and small glass containers, a stethoscope, a kit with needles and syringes, a 1-liter bottle of alcohol, medical suturing thread, bandages and gauze, several blister packs of medicine, and a whole assortment of other items in various compartments. None of them had ever seen anything like it before, and they chose not to touch anything — much to Ana's relief.
"Hey, what happened to your arm?" Astrid asked in surprise as she touched the area, causing Hiccup to grunt in pain. The group gathered around, worried about their leader.
"How did that happen?" Fishlegs asked.
"Whoa, that’s definitely going to leave a scar!" Snotlout said, trying his best to resist poking at the injury.
"Poor Hiccup, lost a leg, now he’s gonna lose an arm — truly a tragedy," said Ruffnut dramatically, taking off her Viking helmet and mourning Hiccup’s arm in silence.
"Oh, Ruffnut, I’m not going to lose my arm," Hiccup replied, not in the mood to talk or respond to the twins’ nonsense.
"Don’t worry, Hiccup! Me and Ruffnut were trained in the ancient art of putting arms back into place!" Tuffnut said as he rolled up his sleeves and stepped forward confidently. He walked with purpose as his sister helped hold Hiccup in place.
Ana's heart raced, the two twins held the boy tightly and seemed determined to put his arm back in place, however they were making a wrong move that could clearly destroy the arm and cause it to calcify incorrectly. She knew she shouldn't get involved, that it wasn't her business, but her heart wouldn't allow it.
"Stop this now!" She shouted as she threw herself out of the dragon's reach, ripping the collar of her shirt as she did so and then she pushed the twins aside, the reactions were many, they all went on the defensive, but Ana didn't have time to care about that now.
"He had a serious injury, there was a separation of the bones in the shoulder joint, he probably had a fracture in the humerus, if they put the arm back in the wrong way it will regenerate crookedly or worse, pierce the skin later." She said as she worked quickly, the others moved away as they listened to her words, confused and precise words, but said with such confidence that it was scary.
Ana grabbed her briefcase and took out a pair of new latex gloves from a small compartment on the side, quickly putting them on. Then she grabbed the bottle of alcohol and poured some onto the cotton she had taken from another compartment in the briefcase. “Excuse me,” she said softly to Hiccup, who was startled by her sudden change in reaction.
Very calmly, she pulled out a large pair of surgical scissors from the briefcase and calmly began to cut the leather fabric of his clothes. As she had imagined, the area on his shoulder was very purple and had a clear deformity, the skin was torn and the tip of the bones were sticking out, the blood was black and clotted.
“This might hurt,” Ana informed the boy softly, as she passed the wet cotton over his skin. Hiccup grunted in pain when the cotton passed over the open wound, but otherwise the young woman’s hands were gentle and soothing, she really seemed to know what she was doing.
“I’m going to put the bone back in place, and then I’m going to sew stitches so that the blood doesn’t escape from the wound. Putting a bone in is painful, but I need you to stay still.” She said quietly and calmly, her eyes fixed on Hiccup’s. Faced with that extremely precise and efficient treatment, he just nodded, speechless.
With a precise hooking motion with her arm, Ana turned the joints and Hiccup let out a muffled grunt, but that was it. The deformity in his shoulder diminished. It was still red and swollen. The rest was quick and finished calmly. She applied more alcohol to a new cotton ball and stopped the bleeding. Once it was properly cleaned, she began to sew.
When she was finished, the girl bandaged everything perfectly. With calm movements, she cleaned her materials, dried them, and then put them all in the suitcase in their proper places. No one said a word until she turned around and looked at the group, who were surprised.
“Who are you?” Hiccup asked as he stood up and grabbed Ana’s arm, afraid that she would pull away or run away. She widened her eyes and thought for a moment.
The young woman had no idea where she was or how she would get back. In this strange world that was probably centuries behind her time, she needed a place to stay and people to ask about this strange world. Ana didn’t believe in magic, but seeing dragons and traveling through time definitely made her doubt everything she knew.
“I’m Ana, I’m a healer.” She finally said as she held the case tightly and raised her face with determination. If it meant surviving and returning home, she would find out everything she could about this world and help this man until everything was resolved.

Homeopathy, one of the world’s most widely used forms of integrative medicine, has been a part of healthcare for over two centuries. Despite being considered controversial in some circles, it has gathered the trust of more than 200 million people worldwide. Homeopathy was founded in 18th-century Germany on a simple, yet revolutionary principle: "like cures like," or the Law of Similars. A substance that causes specific symptoms in a healthy individual can be used to treat those same symptoms in someone who is unwell. For instance, red onion (Allium cepa), which causes stinging eyes and a runny nose, might be used to alleviate similar symptoms in a cold or allergy.
Remedies are made from plants, minerals, or even trace amounts of toxins, and can be delivered in the form of sugar pills (to be put under the tongue), gels, creams, capsules, or tinctures. The first step in creating a homeopathic medicinal preparation is crushing or dissolving raw materials in water or alcohol, and then diluting the substance several times with water and vigorously shaking it—known as succussion—until the desired dilution level is achieved. The result is a substance that contains no detectable molecules of the original ingredient. Homeopathy follows the “law of minimum dose”: the lower the dose of medication, the greater its effectiveness. At such high dilutions, adverse reactions are rare. In fact, a brief intensification of symptoms after starting a correctly chosen remedy is seen as a positive sign.
