Under the Weather
Synopsis: You’re sick. George’s sick. Someone else is probably going to get sick. It’s an interesting last race in Abu Dhabi
young female driver reader x 2023 F1 grid
A/N: this fic is pretty vague so i’m not going to give the reader a team or teammate, we just know that she’s a driver on the grid because that’s all we really need to know
. so
. you think you caught it in vegas
. it was colder than you were used to
. you barely got any sleep
. and even though you’re around hundreds of people every race weekend, las vegas felt more packed than a normal race would be
. and you were seated next to george, who’s been feeling sick for a few days at that point, for nearly all pre-race activities
. it was probably all of these combined that gave you a sore throat, stuffy nose, pounding headache, and persistent cough
. you knew the second you woke up thursday morning
. “it’s going to be a shitty weekend”
. the grid, however, did not know until thursday afternoon
. you came into the press conference room, bundled up in a long sleeve and hoodie, nose red with a scratchy voice
. you sit beside an amused lewis, resisting all urges to lay your head against the back of the couch and drift off
. “you okay y/n?”
. the only response he gets is a groan and small shake of the head
. “i’ll get you some tea when we’re done here love, you’ll be okay”
. lewis, who was always your favorite but now has new reasons to be favored, lets you rest your head against his shoulder and close your eyes while you all wait for the conference to begin
. word spreads by the end of the media day, and suddenly you have new reactions from the grid
. daniel walks through the paddock with you, never afraid of a little cough
. “lewis tells me you’ve been on your death bed over here. anything I can do?”
. he insist on giving you a hug and the recipe for chicken soup that he learned from his mum and now swears by
. max, who is afraid of a little cough, is the one who makes sure you’re not being harassed when trying to sleep
" max? who’s under the blanket-”
. “shush. she’s trying to sleep”
. “but who’s-”
. “I said shush”
. lando, a man who’s all too familiar with being clumsy, probably saves you a million times from walking into doorways, a drowsiness affect from the fever you keep insisting you don’t have
. he’ll keep a constant eye on you and hand on your shoulder as a precaution
. “let’s not go over there, that’s a wall”
. “y/n!”
. “mhm?” you’d say, eyes half closed with tiredness
. “that’s a door love, jeez, we should put a bell on you”
. carlos and charles, drivers who’ve had loads of experience taking care of sick younger siblings, make a team effort of ensuring you’re doing your best to get better
. “did you drink the water bottle I gave you?”
. “no”
. “did you drink anything today?”
. “no”
. “oh mon dieu you’re going to kill yourself like this”
. “just try to eat this okay? i know you’re not hungry amiga, but we have a race tomorrow, you need to eat something”
. “i got you more medicine, this one says it should take care of the cough and sneeze so you won’t have to worry about it during the race”
. and then there’s george, your sick partner in crime
. you two make a habit of trapping yourselves in one of your driver’s room
. half to prevent the sickness from spreading further, half to just be left alone
. you guys complain a lot
. take turns choosing movies to watch to pass the time
. reminding the other to take medicine, even though there’s a good chance that person probably hasn’t taken any medicine either
. and passing a bag of cough drops between each other
. as a teammate and friend, lewis tries to talk you two out of racing
. but neither budge
. you get into your car, nose still red and voice still scratchy
. and power through the race, just as you’d been taught to do
. george gets a podium and you get a good points finish, the best results you could’ve asked for considering the conditions
. and stumble out of your car once more, looking for a tissue and that chicken soup recipe
. you get checked on by multiple drivers, though the only response you’re able to give is a nod and thumbs up
. lewis accompanies you on your flight back home, and tries to help as much as you let him
. he feels a bit victorious when you say you wished you’d listen to him and not raced
. but the feeling is instantly replaced with sympathy for his friend, so he just nods and tells you to get some more rest
. after making sure you’re safe at home and surrounded by family and friends that swear on their hearts to take care of you, lewis leaves with congratulations on your season finish and wishes to get better
. you’re fine within a few days, you name the cause of your sickness “end of season fatiague” and ensure the drivers you made a full recovery by wednesday night
. so yeah
. it’s not fun at all to drive while you’re sick
. but it’s a bit easier when you have your friends looking out for you
short little f1 grid sick fic. let’s hope I didn’t just manifest myself a cold

I don’t know if this helpful for anyone else, but feeling really depressed when you’re battling an illness is actually normal and it will pass, and no you aren’t a worthless worm - you’re just fighting off a virus

Sometimes you think maybe everything will be okay but sometimes the "im going to kill myself" thoughts come back just because you're ill BUT sometimes you take a shower and realise maybe it's not that big of a deal

Writing original Devil fruits is so much fun— except if you’re not careful you just end up doing Nen abilities or worse, JJK techniques. You go “oh I’ll just make them as absurd as possible”— congrats on your newly created Stand bro

12, 22, 30!!! ❤️
Thanks for asking!
12. what’s some good advice you want to share?
Thought I'd go for something I've been trying to hold myself to personally here. I have no idea if this is particularly applicable to others to the same extent it is to me, but eh. Basically, it's incredibly easy sometimes to get fixated on your own mistakes, to try and mull over how you could have done things differently, to try and examine from all angles how it went wrong. The "what if"s essentially. And, don't get me wrong, you can often learn lessons from previous mistakes. And it can be healthy to vent or wallow occasionally. But oftentimes, it's just an excuse to wind yourself up further over what you could have done. To trip over yourself in guilt rather than looking at the present, which then just means you end up making the same mistakes -> why did I do that, I should know better -> rinse, repeat. So, if you're stuck on what-if scenarios and it's a case where you're not actually getting anything constructive out of it. (Namely, stuff like if you need to give an apology, if it's better to just leave it be, what you intend to do in a similar scenario if it arises, etc) If all it's achieving is making yourself feel worse? Stop. Just literally stop ruminating over it. And I know it's a lot easier to say that than *do* it, but the key thing is to catch yourself when you're doing the spiralling thing and just acknowledge that that's what's going on. Then try and move on. But at the same time, if you're not able to shut it off immediately, don't beat yourself up over it. Just recognising when you're in that zone is progress in of itself.
22. say 3 things about someone you love
This is more "loved" than "love" but I say it counts. So, my cat. - When it got cold in the winter and I was working from home, she would always come and sit on my lap and let me stroke her whilst I was doing stuff. Sometimes, she would get onto my lap by peeking up through the shelf intended for a printer and other times she would go straight over the desk. We had a system where when she wanted to leave, I'd spin the chair over to the bed and she'd walk from the desk over my lap to the bed to curl up and sleep. - One year, we got her a cat 'Christmas stocking'. It had a load of different things in it, but most importantly, it had these cat treats she really enjoyed. Unfortunately, we didn't realise she would be able to sus out what it was, so one day we got home and found the whole thing ripped open and scattered across the sides. After that, we made sure to hide any presents for her very carefully. - The only one of her toy type things we got her that she would actually use was the scratching post. If something had catnip in she'd get all big-eyed over it (which, no surprise, led to scratches), but anything else she'd just plain ignore. She was picky like that. I miss her.
30. what’s one thing that never fails to make you happy/happier?
I don't actually have any cheat code for this one. No guarantees so much as mitigations, but let's see. Hm. I think getting away from home for a bit is a big one. Just to change the environment up really (this applies doubly in autumn/winter when the weather and short days mean I spend most of my time inside). I'll often go find a nearby place that does hot chocolate and go sit there for a bit, listening to music if it's on in there or bringing my headphones along. If I've thought ahead I'll bring something to read as well. If the weather is nice there are some local areas to explore as well and some places that are fairly quiet. In the summer, you can head to the nearby graveyard and there's this abandoned chapel type building (unfortunately you can't get into it but you can go around it :<) and loads of crows and squirrels. I also as a general kinda happy thing rather than a cheering up kinda deal tend to like watching stuff with friends.

anxiety manifesting in dizziness is such a rude thing to be honest. i’ve been thinking how the fact that my dizziness is not getting less these past days/weeks combined with being sick could be a sign of lyme’s disease (or something else i guess), a very real possibility seeing how i’ve gotten 20-30 tick bites in the last month, but that thought is also not going to calm my anxiety, again not making the constant dizziness go away

wait so I can add MORE angst? 👀
#reading about the effects of having your vocal cords severed.... oh boy#oh I can make this so angsty if I want to...#either it's like. Benze is super cognizant of it in that doctorish way he has and is constantly waiting for something to happen#OR it doesn't even cross his mind. it's one of a set of symptoms that are kept on a list in the back of his mind and he spends#so much time fretting about communication that he doesn't even think about any of the rest of it until it happens#and then suddenly his best friend in the world is choking on nothing and looking to him with wild panicked eyes#because crab didn't expect this either. how would he?#severed vocal cords lead to vocal cord paralysis which has common effects of trouble breathing/swallowing etc and choking#the internet does not want to be forthcoming about my fictional hypothetical of what happens if you get both#cords straight up sliced but like. you can imagine#idk I'm just Thinking#something happens like crab gets knocked out or drugged or smth and benze is so concerned that he'll have#breathing problems while unconscious#and knowing all of that means that the others get kind of spun up about it too#(meaning: sandman gets so stressed out he thinks he's gonna throw up because he's ridiculously high strung anyway#and doesn't like when one of his friends is hurt aND ANOTHER ONE IS TALKING ABOUT POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS#LIKE IT'S NOTHING.)#(actually I think it's really funny bc when Benze is in doctor mode he does come off as really cold and unfeeling#even though what's really happening is that he's falling back on facts that he knows and trusts in. medical stuff he can handle#so he's super clinical about it most of the time. and it drives the others up a wall bc they think he doesn't care)#ok sorry I'm just rambling somewhat unrelatedly now about stuff#ddas

BREAKING NEWS WE HAVE REASON TO SUSPECT A MEDICATION IS ACTUALLY HELPING BYTEOFSOUP'S IBS. My life was a nightmare for a bit but then i got prescribed something and i noticed significant improvement??? I'm not cured or anything but it's only been two days
The one thing is that i don't have the usual marker for the disease this medication is treating... it very well could be just the upswing of a particularly bad week.

Currently I feel like my body is rapidly being taken over by (sentinent???) mucus and occasionally trying to cough up a couple of vital organs to make more room for it. 🙁
