Catholic Man Moment: What gifts has the Spirit given me?

Gospel - Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received.

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.

He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."

Topic: What gifts has the Spirit given me?

This excerpt is from the Bible, specifically from the book of Luke, chapter 1 and 4. It describes the events of Jesus Christ's life and teachings.

The excerpt describes how Jesus returned to his hometown of Nazareth and went to the synagogue (a place of worship) on the Sabbath (a day of rest). He was given a scroll with a passage from the prophet Isaiah, which he read and interpreted as a fulfillment of a prophecy in his own life and teachings.

The passage is saying that the Bible is a precious gift from God, and we should be thankful for it. It's a source of strength and guidance that can help us understand and live out our Christian faith. Just like a fountain of water that quenches our thirst, the Bible can nourish our souls and give us the wisdom and love we need to live a good life.

Holy Spirit, offices and gifts.

When we become Christians, we receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is given to all true believers who are willing to repent of their sins and believe that Jesus died for them, and believe in the blood of Jesus to cleanse them from their sins, and so be forgiven and saved from Hell into the Kingdom of our God by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Then there are the offices of the assemblies (churches), and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The offices are appointed by the Holy Spirit, and the gifts of the Spirit are given to the members of the assembly as the Spirit chooses to give.

If the assembly offices and gifts of the Spirit do not operate in you or in your assembly, it does not mean that you are not a true Christian… you still have the Holy Spirit as you received at salvation. But because the enemy - Satan and his hierarchy of fallen angels and demons - are getting much more active against us and our assemblies in these, the end times, we should pray and ask for the gifts and operations of the Holy Spirit; for ourselves and also in the assemblies. These offices and gifts will give us ability and strength to overcome our enemies in the spirit world. This is very important in the end times - much more important than it might seem. The skillful and deceptive attacks by Satan and his hierarchy of fallen angels and demons against us and the assemblies have already started to increase in intensity.

Eph 6:12 [WEB] For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

1) Assembly offices and gifts

1Cor 12:28 [WEB] God has set some in the assembly: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracle workers, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, and various kinds of languages.

Eph 4:11, 12 [WEB] He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds [or, pastors] and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ…

Assemblies should be run according to these assembly offices and gifts as is set in the Bible. There may also be other offices or gifts which the Holy Spirit may decide to set in different assemblies. The servants who occupy the offices should be appointed by God, by his word through the Holy Spirit.

2) Gifts of the Spirit

1Cor 12:7-11 [WEB] But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all. For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit; and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages. But the one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.

These gifts of the Holy Spirit should operate in the assemblies as the Spirit gives to the members of the assembly, including children. Again, the Spirit may decide to give other gifts not mentioned here. The Lord is doing a lot of new things in these, the end times.

Elvis coughed, the cold water around him - or maybe it was him, shivering, chattering with his teeth - that was the cold one. Something... something, dunno. He blew out a breath, his limp, matted hair flopping back from his brow. Elvis was in the bath, and he was going to do this. 

Without Laney. 

A sneeze, and, well, after that the tears came easy, snot dripping down to the half-grown stubble on his face he'd have to shave in the godforsaken morning just to look somewhat presentable for the next day of court. 

In this moment, alone, sweating out his own fuckin' bad decisions, the lights making his eyes go all sideways... he can't even be mad at Laney baby. Who'd want to love his sorry, drugged-up, washup ass? If she wasn't...

"Wasn't 'ttached t'... t' a goddamn mess, maybe she'd l-l-like the colour... goddamn orange." 

"Yeah, and maybe she'd like you to clean yourself up, instead." 

Elvis whipped his head round and blinked hard as he gagged with the movement. Sweat dripped down his face and stung his fool eyes but he could recognise Charlie's mug even half blind and half mad. 

"Maybe I jus' needta sink into this here bathtub an' end it all, Charlie, ever think 'bout that? Huh? Huh?" And there's the anger, the coiling snake of sin that wraps around his heart ever since he made one too many singin' movies. Ever since - since -

"God DAMN IT! Elvis thrashed in the bathtub, gripping his hair, yanking, "Cain't even say her name, Charlie! Can't, I c-c-can't!" 

Charlie'd moved closer, and Elvis felt a hand wrap around his. Warm. Elvis gripped it back too tight. "Elaine?" 

"N-n-no, fu-ck," Elvis's voice broke. "My baby, Charlie, my baby - can't say her god-given name, can't visit her grave, can't do nothin' 'bout this fuckin' divorce! Can't sing, can't get it up, can't numb it out - it all's too much." 

"Elvis - " Charlie's features swam into focus through the tears and the shakes. " - it's helpin', ain't it? Sayin' that out loud?"

"Fuck, Charlie. It hurts so... so goddamn bad. And I..." Elvis's breath hitched, lashes clumped and face pale except for the red high on his cheeks, the blue bruised around sunken eyes. It'd take a whole lotta makeup to pretend in the morning. It was taking something out of him now to stop pretending.

Receiving Gifts from the Heavenly Realms

Receiving what you ask for is one of the most fulfilling experiences in life. During our youth, we frequently ask our parents for different things. When they have the means to grant these wishes, they do so because of their deep love for us. Similarly, we have a Father above who is not only willing to fulfill our needs but is capable of giving far beyond what we can imagine. Just think about how much more He can give.

God is rich, glorious, and always attentive to our daily needs. As written in Matthew 7:7-8, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." Even though God knows our needs, He invites us to ask, reflecting our humility and dependence on Him. This divine generosity demonstrates His love, ensuring that our needs are met, our searches are rewarded, and opportunities are opened when we reach out to Him.

In summary, just as our earthly parents show their love by fulfilling our requests, our Heavenly Father’s love is evident in His willingness to provide for us beyond our expectations. By asking, seeking, and knocking, we not only receive but also deepen our relationship with Him, experiencing the richness of His divine generosity in our lives.
