I'll watch Holiday Affair, I said. I'd like to watch another Old Hollywood movie that happens to take place at Christmastime. I love a good love triangle.

I did not expect a love triangle where the "wrong" man was so much better as a partner and person in every single way that I wanted to scream at the woman for making the dumbest romantic decision she could possibly make.

On the one hand you've got a kind, stable, affectionate lawyer who's been part of her life for two years, has great chemistry with her, offers his help when "the other man" needs it without hesitation, and is so understanding and compassionate when laying out the signs that the woman doesn't love him that he had me in tears.

On the other hand you've got a guy who has no money who buys an expensive present for the child of a woman he barely knows, who springs a kiss on her on one of their first meetings despite knowing that she's got a long-term boyfriend, and does nothing except smarmily psychoanalyze her life decisions. He's got none of the skills to make me think he can support a family, and aside from being mildly better-looking, has no real charm or chemistry with her.

The cleverness of the final scene being on the train is the only thing that could have made me mildly okay with the ending. I don't know how I managed to like the movie so much while hating the central romance.
