Here's a Christmas movie rec tangentially related to Disney: It Happened on 5th Avenue (1947), dir. Roy Del Ruth.
Don DeFore plays the protagonist, and he and his wife operated the Silver Banjo Barbecue restaurant in Frontierland from 1957 to 1962. He was also present at Disneyland's opening day and is shown briefly in the telecast.
#i love when my disney interest overlaps with my old hollywood interest#which obviously happens often since disney is a part of hollywood#but i didn't know that about don defore#until i saw him in the telecast and then looked him up to make sure he was the guy in it happened on 5th ave#personal#text

Jungkook hates studying.
Although his grades prove to differ, a part of him has always thought it was simply good luck. For the most part, he’s an A student… Truth be told, he’s more of a cram-it-all-at-2AM kind of guy. On the odd days that Jungkook felt like he needed to prepare more, he liked studying in the University’s nest. There’s a good coffee cart there and it’s definitely much more social than the hideous library.
Yet, the nest and his bedroom ceased to exist when he met you.
When he met you, Jungkook stepped into the library for the first time in nearly three years.
It was so odd.
He felt like a new student. It was a whole different world in that stuffy library of yours... He wanted to understand it so bad. Maybe that's why he kept coming back. Sooner than later, he realized that it wasn't the library he was trying to understand; it was you.
And it felt weird right off the bat. He felt so... Confused? Alone? It occurred to him just then that no one really talks about what happens when you develop feelings for someone... How you begin to alter your routine just so it can match theirs and how every little thing that you see becomes an excuse for you to use to see or talk to them about.
Since when did he care about who was in your Instagram story?
Since when did he care about which parties you were attending?
Since when did he give a shit about sitting next to you?
Oh, and not to mention the sudden change in preference... But let's fucking talk about the preference change.
He used to really like going down 3RD Ave to go home from the library, but you said it was too busy of a path. Going down 5TH Ave takes 5 minutes longer, but it's okay. The scenery is prettier. The walk is calmer. It's also conveniently closer to your place.
He used to not give a shit about oat or soy milk. Regular milk is fine. He's not even lactose. But since you prefer oat milk; so does he. You're right. It does make drinks taste better.
He used to only get haircuts once every 2-3 months... But you said he looked handsome when he cut his hair shorter than usual. Now, his barber asks him, "Seriously, bro, what's her name?" once a month.
It's mindblowing.
There are so many things he's changed about himself before he even realized he liked you. There are so many things that changed in his life just for the mere chance of you liking it or noticing it.
Like, fuck.
He's such a fucking loser.
Jungkook doesn’t know why he feels this way... He just does. It swirls in his stomach and presses on his chest. Simply, he’s confused about whether he can control it or not.
This feeling.
This change.
Truly, all he knows is that if you like something, he likes it too.
If you hate something, he hates it too.
If you do something, he will do it too.
A part of himself can’t even be upset at this change. At the end of the day, he was studying better. He was seating himself in a less overstimulating environment and above all; he was always with you.
How could he be upset at that?
His thoughts pause as he feels you squeeze his arm for his attention. Gladly, he gives it to you.
"Hmm?"
"I think I'm all done for tonight—oh gosh—" Your words are cut off as you turn your face and meet his. He's so close! It caught you so off guard that your phone slipped from your hands.
"S-sorry," you apologize, pushing your chair back, bending down, and getting on the floor to find your phone. Jungkook quickly follows you, getting off his seat and meeting you under the table. "I didn't realize you were so close—"
"I was?" he asks, voice a little shakey. From the corner of his eye, he sees your phone and reaches for it. Just as he's about to give it to you, you laugh in response.
"I guess that's how close you usually sit to me. I was so focused on my work and when I finally turn away it was like boom! Jungkook!"
His facial expression remains blank as you ramble. You look at him softly, feeling a little confused. "Did you get another haircut, by the way? It looks good!"
He blushes.
You smile at him warmly, inching backward to get up from under the table.
"This? It was whatever—"
Jungkook's words cut off as a muted thud interrupts. He saw it happen. It happened so fast. Your forehead collides with the table's edge, eliciting a sharp gasp of pain.
He reaches for you, placing his hand over your forehead and hissing. "Shit, ___! Are you okay?"
Blinking away tears of discomfort, you wince as Jungkook presses his hand to your throbbing temple. "I'm okay," you murmur, trying to downplay the pain, though your voice trembles slightly.
It's in this moment that you take in how Jungkook looks at you. His eyes soften with concern as he studies your flushed cheeks and furrowed brow. Leaning in closer, he brushes a strand of your hair away from your face. His touch is so gentle and reassuring at the same time. It must be the bump because for some reason... You're dizzy.
You meet his gaze. Jungkook offers you a small smile and you melt. Despite the throbbing ache in your head, a warmth spread throughout your body at the sight of his fucking smile.
It's not even his best one.
His best smile happens when you say something under your breath and he catches it. Teasing you relentlessly, you've grown to accept his behaviour in exchange of seeing that damn smile of his.
It was worth it.
"Here," Jungkook takes your hand, “let’s get you an ice pack—owh, fuck."
Unsure if it's because he was nervous and distracted by the fact he was holding your hand, Jungkook clearly got ahead of himself. He doesn't time this right. His body jerked up too early, swiftly attempting to escape. Instead, a similar muted thud noise causes a muffled curse to escape his lips. The pain radiates through his skull and you look at him, knowing the feeling all too well.
Jungkook is stunned.
Jungkook is stupid.
What kind of genius hits his head trying to get out from under the table too?
As your eyes widen, your hands fly to the back of his head. You rub his head and lean in closer. Jungkook places his hand on your wrist, biting the inside of his cheeks.
He didn't know what emotion he felt more of... Was he embarrassed or was he was just super pissed at this fucking table right now?
Or was he kind of loving this?
You're so close to him that he can take your scent in. You smell so good... And you're so pretty up close. He pouts, and utters; "fuck, that really hurt."
You throw your head back and laugh. "I think we're idiots," you tell him. “Seriously, are you okay?”
“Yeah..” He snickers. "Wanna keep this a secret? Let’s never tell anyone about this... Ever."
He offers you his pinky. With your free hand, you intertwine them and make your promise.
At that moment, as you two locked eyes, everything began to fade away. Jungkook wasn't pissed anymore.
Why should he be?
There was solace in your gaze. It was a good reminder that you care for him... And wow, did that make him feel good.
His heart beats faster and faster.
Then, it skips a beat.
As Jungkook feared, you had truly done it now.
With the slightest touch, the softest smile, and kindest eyes... You mesmerize him and he finds it difficult—impossible—to get himself out of this.
“Is this even helping—“
Jungkook catches your hands, keeping them on him. You tilt your head but smile shyly. He clears his throat.
“Y-yeah,” he lies. “I think I hit my head harder than you. Can you just.. Yeah?”
You nod, moving in closer. At this point, there’s no space between you two. You continue to rub his head and he does everything he can to memorize this.
Every detail on your face.
How your touch feels.
How you touch his heart.
The way he feels right now… Oh, god. It’s too much. It’s a kind of high he has never felt before.
For a moment you two sit there and it’s like there is no world aside from the one you two found in each others presence. Under the table, laughing and comforting each other—oh, it felt golden. Jungkook couldn't believe it... He couldn't believe how this fleeting moment changed everything he ever felt about you. There was no going back. There was no way out either... There was just... This.
Here.
Now.
What bliss? How slowly, then all at once, you bloomed for his gaze.

How about Easy A for Clexafication? I could see Clarke trying to help out a fellow gay by telling other kids in school that she slept with him. And then, thanks to her loud mouth friends, it gets out of hand with her trying to help out other guys and she gets labeled the school slut even though she’s never slept with anyone. At first Clarke leans into it and plays up the slut bit but soon realizes that it’s all too much. Her actual crush Lexa seems to be the only person who doesn’t believe the rumors. I see Lexa as the school mascot (the warriors) and she does the whole warrior getup with black eye makeup and riles up the crowd at pep rallies. Lexa also works at a local seafood restaurant where she dresses up like a pirate which is also a look that Clarke quite enjoys. Eventually the truth comes out and Clarke and Lexa become everyone’s favorite couple at school.
Ahoooo do I have a cavalcade of HCs for an Easy A au 👀.
First of all, they'd be childhood friends. The kind with weekly sleepovers and even a joint a 5th birthday party one year (despite their birthdays being 3-4 months apart, much to their parents dismay. But they insisted.) I'm talking the childhood friends who practiced witchcraft in each others backyards (potions of mud, cool lookin rocks, and leaves. Highly dangerous stuff), who learned to ride bikes together, who caught fireflies in glass jars together, who promised to grow up and get married to each other 'cuz boys are yucky' kind of friends.
And then middle school happened. And they both kinda went their separate ways.
Well.
More like Lexa grew into her own person. Doing things like joining the girls basketball team. And then volleyball. Even ruining their weekend plans with track and field practice one too many weekends in a row. She started branching out in her interests and making new friends, and left Clarke totally behind. Or so that's what Clarke has always thought (more on that later)
Cut to high school and they haven't spoken to each other in years. Not since about 3 weeks into 6th grade. There's no animosity or anything, it's just... They're strangers who occasionally wave and smile at each other in the school halls. Lexa way more often than Clarke ever does, but it's not like anybody's keeping a tally. Right? Because it doesn't matter because they don't know each other anymore. Clarke doesn't even really recognize Lexa as the same girl who used to wear matching Mutant Ninja Turtles pj shirts with her and stay up late staring at the glow-in-the-dark stickers on her bedroom ceiling while they talked for hours. Now Lexa is like, Ms. High School with all her Track and Field trophies and her badass Warriors mascot credentials (the pauldron, plastic sword, and warpaint coming across much more threatening than their old mascot, The Raccoons 😕 (tho there will always be something to be said for their freshman year when Lexa was forced to rally in the overstuffed costume while menacingly rubbing her lil raccoon-y painted hands together...)). That all has cemented her a seat at the Cool Kids Table.
Not to mention the fact that Lexa spent all of sophomore and junior year with her arm permanently attached to her (now ex) girlfriend's hip.
Not that Clarke ever cared. Or even noticed. So like, why did you even bring it up? ಠ_ಠ
Anyway.
So when her not-really friend but general acquaintance Monty asks her to... well, be his beard, Clarke agrees. In a way that, jesus fuckin hell, really got away from her faster than she ever anticipated. Because then Monty tells Jasper, and Jasper asks her to do the same, and before she even knows what the hell happened to this simple favor, everyone in school seems to believe that a painfully virgin Clarke is fucking the entire AV Club. And more.
It all spirals from there with the usual slut shaming and everything that goes along with society's hatred of women who have sex. It's only when her own best friend Raven/Wells (whichever, doesn't matter) turns on her - accusing her of being a slut and a liar and a terrible friend for not even telling them - that Clarke just says "haha Ok Fuck This" and goes all in.
Which. Whew. This is Clarke Griffin we're talking about. She's aware she's been blessed by puberty. So when she starts shaking her ass around school in tight jeans and corset tops, it has the exact effect she desires.
And then some.
More, in fact, than she had initially bargained for.
In the melee that follows of more guys bribing their way to be on the Griffin Bedpost Notches of Shame (and few a who missed the fucking memo that all of this is actually fake 😒), there is... Lexa.
Seemingly out of nowhere.
Where people had started parting in the hallways just to not touch her, Lexa seems to start showing up out of nowhere.
The smiles still come, and the friendly waves too. Nothing big. Nothing imposing, or like she wants something like everyone else. But then things like Lexa coming over to sit next Clarke during her break at the pep rally start happening (in her full Warriors getup to boot). Things like Lexa making little jokes to Clarke in passing. There's the moments when she asks Clarke if she's ok and offers her a ride after school, which Clarke always absently turns down. It's weird having Lexa back in her space again, but honestly, she's got too much on her plate to give it much thought. Because Lexa's just Lexa, and now Clarke's apparently the school slut, so... Their worlds are still very much divided.
Until eventually one night Clarke thinks she's actually going out on a date with a nice guy. I mean, she's known Finn since 10th grade. And he picks her up and opens the car door for her and everything. Like,,, this is most definitely a real date!
Except it's not, and he's a pervert asshole just like everyone tf else.
But thankfully, wouldn't ya know it, guess who happens to work at the very seafood/pirate themed restaurant that fuckboy Finn had decided on?
It's finally, FINALLY, in the quiet of Lexa's car when she parks them outside of Clarke's house that they actually talk. It starts with Clarke feeling like a fool for even thinking Finn could—... Not after everything. And Lexa of course does that thing she's taken to doing again. That calm, knowing, entirely too wise for her years kind of smile that Clarke still remembers from when they were kids.
Even in her ridiculous yet oddly attractive pirate's uniform (complete with a discarded eyepatch and clip on parrot) it's distractingly charming.
It's what has Clarke admitting that she doesn't know how she got into this mess. That she never meant to become this person. To which Lexa, in her infinite patience and wisdom, replies, "Clarke, you're still the same person you've always been. I know you. Nothing about you has changed."
Of course Clarke's dismissive answer to that is a smartassed, "Haven't you heard? I'm the school slut."
She can't help but smile at Lexa's laugh. "Actually, if I recall, you're the girl who once convinced me if I hung upside down by my feet from a tree, it'd help me grow taller."
"You can't say for sure that it didn't help," is Clarke's automatic response with a wave toward Lexa's general lanky, goddess-esque physique. Which earns her another laugh. Again, not that anyone's keeping a tally.
"True," is Lexa's response and, dammit, she's doing that all knowing smile-y grin thing again. "But you're also the girl who used to help me tie my shoes. And traded her pickles for my carrots. And taught me how to fold our secret notes so that nobody else could ever read them."
And, yeah, Clarke does remember that. Which in hindsight had been kind of stupid. It wasn't like they ever let their class time correspondence fall into the dastardly hands of anyone but each other, so the chances of interception were zilch making the whole exercise rather moot. But at the time it'd felt... important. Because what'd they'd had was only ever meant for just them.
What the hell even happened to those girls?
"You stopped answering my calls," is Lexa's simple reply. It doesn't even seem to hold any blame. "It was like... one day you just cut me out."
Which was not what had happened?
Was it?
Except, as Lexa gently explains that while, yes, she did start getting into sports, she still always tried to make time for Clarke. She did call and leave messages that kept going unanswered. Sent texts that more often than not were left on read. She'd ask Clarke to go to her games and track meets, sometimes would call her just to come out to eat with her and her teammates. But Clarke had always given her a disinterested promise for a million next times that never actually came.
Eventually Lexa just stopped trying because Clarke made it clear that she didn't like who Lexa was anymore. And it stings ten times worse because Lexa's doesn't sound angry or blaming. Just a little hurt. Maybe still a little sad even after all these years.
It's just one more thing to feel absolutely awful about. Like, she really is the universe's biggest asshole. She has no idea what to do with this revelation of her own failures, or the soft way Lexa keeps looking at her.
After that night things both change, yet stay completely the same. Because after that night when she'd apologized to Lexa and said she regreted doing what she'd done - that 6th grade her was an idiot. 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th grade her as well 🤧 - she was still the "school slut" and a social pariah, but she had her best friend back at least.
Her best friend who smiled her every time they passed in the hallway and sometimes walked her to class. Her best friend who now ate lunch with her and texted her on the weekends and would laugh at every single one of her jokes (fINE we're keeping a fucking a tally).
Her best friend, who when Clarke mentions is the only perso who talks to her without looking at her corset wrapped breasts, nonchalantly corrects, "Oh I look. Just... Respectfully."
It's hard to return the decency of that favor when Lexa walks away after leaning into Clarke's ear and whispering, "You know I prefer Ninja Turtles pjs anyway."
Clarke eventually comes clean about the whole fiasco, too the shock of everyone. Everyone, that is, except Lexa. Because Lexa kind of knew. Because, as Lexa says in all her glorious Warrior gear, when she kisses Clarke in front of the entire school at the end of the football team's pep rally—
"I told you, Clarke. I know you."

Stranger Things: The First Shadow (My spoiler-filled review and thoughts)
“Nerds, do you copy?”
Buckle up, because this is a long one! I've tried to remember as much as I can from when I saw the play on Dec 5th.
Disclaimer: This is in no way a complete recollection of things that happened. They really packed a LOT into it. This is just what I can personally recall, helped along by other reviews and recollections I’ve found online that sparked my memory.
If you don't want to be spoiled, don't read any further!
Act 1.
After an epic intro scene, where soldiers on a ship at sea get dragged off by demogorgons (more on this later), we’re shown the Stranger Things intro exactly as though we’re watching an episode.
Chapter One: The Girl from Nowhere.
Hawkins, 1959.
It opens with a young Bob Newby on air, talking on his radio show (the founder of Hawkins AV club! <3). We learn that he actually has an adopted sister, Patty Newby. She’s black, so she feels like an outsider (bear in mind it’s the 1950s/60s, so… yeah.) Principle Newby, their father and only remaining parent, is also very religious.
He’s also the pastor (?) at the local church, and often makes Patty go to the church with him. She admits to Bob that she only likes to go to listen in on people’s confessions (some of which are really juicy). She also enjoys the choir there (?) as she likes to sing.
Principal Newby doesn’t like that Bob and Patty read comic books. There’s talk about how some things are discouraged or outright forbidden because they involve sex (gasp!) and morally ambiguous behaviour. Patty in particular is looked down on by her father for acting rebellious. He disapproves of her answering him back.
Instead of praying to God, Patty prays to Wonder Woman.
One of the first sections in the show’s programme is dedicated to the impact of comic books and science fiction on kids in the 1950s:
[This has always been the way with fiction. Whether you are talking about adventure, fantasy or sci-fi, stories set in faraway places reflect the anxieties of the here and now. Just as the children in Stranger Things turn to a fantasy game to help them make imaginative sense of a dangerous world, so we escape to alien landscapes to think about ourselves. As South Africa novelist Lauren Beukes once said, “By imagining the unimaginable, it’s possible to make reality more bearable.”]
[As Patty in Stranger Things: The First Shadow is aware, however, whether male or female, superheroes were almost exclusively white. Unless you happened to get hold of a copy of All-Negro Comics, published in 1947 by Black journalist Orrin Cromwell Evans, Black children would not see themselves represented in popular culture.]
[... in this age of technological advance and political uncertainty, [comic books] provided the thrills, the escapism and the imaginative fuel that audiences, young and old, needed more than ever.”] - Mark Fisher
Next, we’re introduced to Joyce. She’s Joyce Maldonado at this point. She’s half undressed and trying to find her clothes, obviously fooling around with Lonnie Byers, who is already talking down to her in a very casual way, telling her she’ll never amount to anything and that she’ll never leave Hawkins like she dreams of. It was another example of only physical attraction existing between two characters - there’s little to no emotional compatibility there. I sort of had the vibe that the scene was effectively introducing Joyce and Lonnie’s unequal power dynamics as they are in the show moving forwards. Lonnie sits with his legs encasing Joyce as they both sit on a mattress, and she’s visibly vulnerable in her bra, listening to him say these casually demeaning things to her.
Joyce wants to direct the school play, although she’s pretending to Principal Newby that they’re doing Oklahoma. Oklahoma will serve as a smokescreen for the real play she wants to direct: The Dark of the Moon. This has its own page in the programme too:
[From the depths of Scottish folklore to the Broadway stage, the journey of The Dark of the Moon is as shrouded in mystery and intrigue as the contents of the piece itself. Over the course of several hundred years, the story evolved from humble beginnings (The Ballad of Barbara Allen) into something rather darker and more brooding than its simpler folktale roots.] [In its original versions, it seems to have been an innocent, if tragic, ballad about a young man who dies of unrequited love, only for the grief-stricken object of his affection to follow him to the grave. There, they become a rose and a briar respectively, destined to be intertwined for all eternity.] - The Creel House front door, anyone?
[In 1939, it had somehow become part of the Appalachian mountain lore of the north-eastern USA… [sometimes] with a central theme of divorce rather than death. But perhaps its oddest reincarnation is as a regular feature in the annual school play catalogue across the United States… retitled The Dark of the Moon, the play recasts Barbara Allen as a young maiden desired by a witch boy whose request to be made human is granted on the condition that she is faithful to him for a year. When that condition is tested to destruction, tragedy naturally (or unnaturally) ensues. The play is rich with allegory, including themes as knotty as religious fanaticism, demonic possession and mob psychology, and with its plot of star-crossed lovers meeting across the divide between this world and a mystical parallel one, it’s a kind of Gothic Romeo and Juliet.] -Michael Davies
In the next few scenes we’re introduced to a whole host of characters as they come into the high school, and eventually gather around for the casting of Joyce’s play:
Ted Wheeler, school jock, Mr Popular. Very much a ‘peaked in high school’ vibe. 🙈
Karen Childress, Ted’s popular cheerleader girlfriend. Ted and Karen are depicted as two teens who can barely keep their hands off each other. They constantly make out. It’s suggested that Karen is only dating him because he’s popular and um… well-endowed.
Walter Henderson (who must be Dustin’s dad) is a total dick. He’s openly racist towards Patty at one point, earning him glares and snappy remarks from both of the Sinclairs who are present at the time. Patty has a horrible nickname at school, “mystery meat”, because of her unknown origins. But it’s clear with Walter's comments that her race also plays a factor in her general ostracisation.
Claudia Yount (Dustin’s Mom). She has a cat called Prancer, and is dating Walter. I thought it was very fan-servicey to include Dustin’s parents at all, because we know canonically that Dustin and his mom only moved to Hawkins when he was 4th Grade. So I guess Claudia and Walter moved away, had Dustin elsewhere, then Claudia came back to Hawkins again with Dustin after Walter had left/divorced her??
Sue and Charles Sinclair. Again, it was a cute Easter Egg to include them, but all the parents of the OG boys being there felt very fan-servicey - especially with them all already being coupled up in high school. It felt too unrealistic and a bit jarring. I’m choosing to take this as they were literally intended as cute little Easter Eggs, and as prime opportunity for comedic relief (e.g. seeing Ted Wheeler as a total player, in total opposition to the Ted we know).
Alan Munson. He’s a little strange and quirky, a lot like Eddie. He has a rock and roll vibe, and sticks out his tongue and does devil horns with his fingers, lol. The others don’t seem to know what to make of him, but there’s no animosity or anything. He’s really funny in all his scenes.
And of course, Jim Hopper Junior. To me, Young Hopper was like… a weird mixture of old Hopper from the show, and Steve! The actor did a great job, but yeah, it was giving Steve more than Hopper in some places (to me, at least). I don't know if this was intentional.
Hopper has some dad issues - his father is the chief of police, and they don’t get on. There’s a whole scene later on in the show where they even have a physical fight in the police station (although this isn’t depicted super seriously, and is actually part of a larger comedic section that involves some of the other cops in the station getting involved for laughs. At the end, Hopper and his dad sort of come to an agreement.) It’s kind of slapstick. They’re all falling over each other, and there’s even a part where one male cop falls against another face forward onto a desk, and it’s pretty suggestive (one is sort of mounted behind the other). Idk if this was supposed to be a standard ‘gay joke’ just for lols, or if it was more that the cops had an unexpected ‘moment’ together (they take a while to part from each other, and then they avoid each other’s eyes, so… idk). Just something I noticed happening off to the side.
Anyway, back to Act 1. We’re taken away from Hawkins High to outside the Creel house, and introduced to the Creels moving into Hawkins, just like they appear in the show’s flashbacks. They’ve moved from Nevada, and the reason they’ve moved is because something had happened with Henry, and this is meant to be a new start - it’s left ambiguous as to what exactly happened, but there’s mention of a kid that had been ‘left in a wheelchair’.
At first, Virginia Creel seems somewhat loving towards her son, hugging and kissing him and trying to act ‘normal’, but she’s clearly unsettled by him. Henry is unpredictable, and almost seems to switch between different personalities: one that’s familiar, shy but friendly, and one that quickly rages and turns violent.
Whilst it’s not explained WHY yet, we clearly see that Henry is somehow ALREADY under the influence of the Mind Flayer - and that he has powers.
Virginia becomes more and more openly terrified of Henry as the play goes on. Meanwhile, Victor Creel is generally absent the whole time as he’s dealing with his own ‘demons’ (severe PTSD from the war). People in Hawkins think he’s odd and weird. Remember that nobody understands PTSD at this point in time.
Again, we get a spread in the programme about this: “These are the tranquilized fifties… the legacy of trauma in post-war America”:
[It is very likely that Corporal Victor Creel, 9th Airforce, missed the birth of his son Henry in 1945… Getting their bodies back to the US would be a huge undertaking… getting their minds home would be another problem, and one which no-one had thought to predict.] [Victor Creel is a familiar figure to us now: shellshocked, prone to outbursts, turning to alcohol to numb his trauma… what to do with the man who has seen atrocities - who is in himself a living testament to the fact that they exist, that they happen - who, in Victor’s case, may even have committed them himself? The answer was to bury him. Though shellshock was first given its name in the aftermath of the First World War… there was no widespread study of PTSD until after the Vietnam War, even though more than double the amount of American soldiers showed symptoms of PTSD during WW2 than WW1… Those suffering on the front were sedated and told they were exhausted… once they made it home, they were told not to talk about it: that they were lucky to be alive.]
[One response in particular would have been familiar to the Creels - the child who becomes aloof from their father, and who disengages from the emotional life of the family… Much like Jim Hopper and his father, there was often immense love between these children and their fathers, but they had no way to talk about the pain they were feeling.] -Beth Kelly
Henry is clearly lonely and feels misunderstood when he first moves to Hawkins. It’s like he’s aware that there’s a darker side of him that’s dangerous, but he can’t fully explain why he does certain things (e.g whatever he did to the kid left in a wheelchair). There’s a scene where he sees the smoke of the Mindflayer swirling around him in the void, and he yells, "What are you??"
He’s the new kid at Hawkins High. People at school think he’s strange. They’re not necessarily cruel to him, but they’re not really sure how to take him either. Joyce is pleasant to him. But the only person he really connects with is Patty Newby - who we know is also a bit of an outsider at the school because of her peculiar origins and skin colour.
It’s clear there is an instant connection between Henry and Patty. Henry in particular is obviously crushing on Patty, and acts awkward around her. They bond over their love of comic books, and decide to be friends.
Anyway - back to Joyce’s play. So the reason she wants to direct the play in the first place is to impress some visitors from a university, so she can achieve a scholarship to study theatre outside of Hawkins.
It involves “witches, satanism, religious allegory”. Lots of things that Principal Newby would definitely disapprove of (hence why she pretends that they’re doing Oklahoma).
Joyce talks about the overarching message: “That’s what it’s all about in the end, isn’t it? Whether love can conquer fear.” (paraphrased). I think that was perhaps a really meta moment, and applies to THIS play and even Stranger Things as a whole.
Also there was something like, “they’re witches, not lesbians!”/ “They were witches as well as lesbians”… “Does it matter?” (again, paraphrasing, I can’t recall the actual lines, and I think this was either said at this point by Joyce and someone else, or a conversation that happened earlier between Bob and Patty when they were talking about a comic or story they had read. I’m sorry, I can’t remember!) But I thought it could be a reference to the Fear Street trilogy, maybe. I was on the lookout for any kind of LGBTQ+ imagery or dialogue, and yet my brain still managed to forget details by the end of it all (Act 1 needed to be 20 minutes longer, seriously. They went through so much dialogue so quickly, it was difficult to keep up. I feel like I need to see the whole thing again to properly take it all in).
Maybe I was tripping, or maybe I misheard, but I thought there was also a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it line about “the ending is happy and gay”. I wish my brain would have held onto those lines, but it happened so quickly. Something like, “the ending will be happy and gay”… “isn’t that what everyone wants?” Now, I’m certain they meant ‘gay’ as in ‘happy’ in the context, but I couldn’t help but side-eye that moment a little because it’s an outdated term in today’s language. It was, I believe, a quick exchange between Joyce and… I want to say Bob? Or possibly Walter? I honestly cannot remember. I'm begging people not to run away with this because it’s also totally possible that it was said in a derivative sense, like, “this story is dark, gothic and tragic... not happy and gay”, you know? "That's what everyone wants, right?" "Maybe, but this ends in tragedy." I really hope someone, ANYONE else caught these lines, and can give me their own two cents on it. (Curse my shit memory and also just how FAST those lines were coming at us during those scenes in Act 1… like guys, please slow down so I can actually take in what you’re saying!)
Anyway. Joyce is having trouble casting the main leads, John and Barbara Allen, as the two are lovers and will need to kiss, and nobody seems to have the right chemistry or is taking it seriously enough.
At one point, Karen (acting as the female lead) confidently and passionately kisses Bob (acting the male lead), who’s awkward and flustered afterwards (this is done for the audience lols).
After hearing her beautiful singing voice (encouraged by Henry), Joyce decides to cast Patty as her female lead. Meanwhile Henry has unwittingly found himself in this room along with everyone, and accidentally gets involved in the casting process. Joyce sees that Patty and Henry have chemistry together, so she decides to cast Henry as her male lead too.
Henry and Patty grow closer. Henry tells Patty that he’s bad, and she should stay away from him. She doesn’t listen, and says just because someone has done some bad things, it doesn’t make them a bad person.
At one point they sit side by side by the confessional at church. Henry admits to her that he has powers. He tells Patty that he can hear what people are thinking - all the time. It drives him crazy (and says people are always ‘pretending’ to be normal. The vibe is very much in tune with his speech in Season 4 about how everyone is just in a silly little play, all playing pretend with each other, all trapped in these notions of living their lives in a way that society thinks is acceptable or desirable).
As an example later on in a separate scene, he points to Karen and Ted and tells Patty, “she thinks he’s an idiot, and he’s scared of her.” He points to more characters in this scene and says more about them (like Claudia and Walter, Sue and Charles, maybe even Joyce and Hopper?) but unfortunately I can only remember Ted and Karen’s.
Patty convinces Henry that his powers are not evil, and that he should be able to control them and use them for good. Henry then creates a "vision" for Patty, where she can freely sing with people listening, and everyone around her joins in and appreciates her talent (I think she sings "Dream a Little Dream of Me"? Unless this happens later on. There’s definitely a moment where she sings a bit of that song. Henry associates it with Patty.)
In this vision, even Patty's father is supportive of her and her singing, and it’s quite a funny moment how she imagines him dressed in a saucy red cape, dancing in a way that he *definitely* wouldn’t approve of in real life.
So it seems Henry is actually able to show people their dreams as well as their nightmares. It suggests his powers are his own at this point (at least to an extent), and not necessarily always controlled by the Mind Flayer.
Victor sees Henry talking to Patty at school, and mentions this to Virginia. He describes it as “harmless, just Puppy Love”, a first crush.
Virginia is still worried, and tells Henry to stay away from Patty (for her protection). Henry gets angry. We keep hearing his voice change when he changes, like a deep, monstrous voice. It’s creepy, like it’s not really him in those moments - it’s like the Mindflayer using Henry’s body, speaking through him.
While in the attic (his new favourite spot), Henry keeps becoming influenced by the Mind Flayer. He travels to the void frequently, from where he proceeds to start killing animals - the first of which is Dustin’s mom’s cat. It’s just like the Vecna attacks in Season 4, snapping their bones and blinding them.
Henry seems to be aware that he’s the one responsible for these killings, and he keeps on going back to the attic, and the void, to keep doing it - but it’s unclear just how aware or remorseful he is about all this, or whether it’s 100% possessed!Henry during those moments. It certainly seems like it’s the Mindflayer making him want to do those things. When he first approaches Prancer, he’s friendly, calm and softly-spoken. The attack happens very suddenly and afterwards, I think Henry sort of ‘comes to’ and cries out in distress/remorse?
Either way, Henry is definitely under the Mind Flayer's control at that point, and you can see the Mind Flayer smoke flying around in the void next to him.
After Claudia’s cat turns up dead, Hopper is immediately on the case, wanting to find the culprit. He starts questioning people, and ends up approaching Henry at school.
I want to clear Hopper’s name in something here! I saw someone say that, in the play, it’s stated that Hopper says he hates cats. Whilst this *is* something Hopper tells Henry at this point, it was clear to me that Hopper was only playing mind games in the way an investigator will try to get a suspected criminal to confess: ‘The truth is, I hate cats. So I actually just want to shake the hand of the person who did it - they’re a hero in my book!’ He’s totally bluffing, and it’s just meant to show that he’s already thinking and working like a detective. Regardless, the tactic doesn’t work, and Henry brushes him off. Hopper remains none the wiser.
When more animals start being killed in the same way, Hopper is the one who figures out that they’re all pets of Hawkins High School students who are taking part in Joyce’s play. He goes to her to request her help, and she and Bob both end up going out to look for clues with him (complete with torches, this gave major Season 1 vibes).
Joyce and Hopper’s relationship is mostly antagonistic, but it’s clear they like each other and they flirt a bit. Meanwhile Bob admires Joyce from afar, wanting only to impress her and to find the courage to tell her how he really feels. There's some love triangle imagery throughout with where they stand. (Note: Bob does eventually admit to Joyce how he feels at the end, but she casually rebuffs him. I'm so glad they eventually ended up together because Bob was just too pure.)
Henry continues to be haunted by images of a monster reflected back at him in a mirror. I think we’re meant to take that as a representation of Mind Flayer!possessed Henry. He’s clearly afraid of himself, and what he’s capable of.
The Mind Flayer appears to him as Patty, and taunts him by saying cruel things, like saying that he will end up killing her. In the vision, Patty starts pulling off her own hair until we see her brain. We hear a deep monstrous voice taunting Henry, saying he “will kill many, many more” - that they have seen it happen, and it is his destiny. (Time travel hints? The Mind Flayer can apparently see into his future, unless this was just an empty taunt that unfortunately came true, or a self-fulfilling prophecy).
[Evidently, there’s something deeply disturbing at the heart of the human psyche about the possibility of uncovering the horrific within itself. When that horror is externalised… it creates a symbolic representation of our own nightmares, perhaps allowing us to tackle them more objectively and overcome those dark, disturbing impulses within us all.]
[By investing fictional creations with the qualities we most fear - the horrifying, animalistic sides of our nature - we can, perhaps, face them more objectively and convince ourselves that we do, ultimately, have control over them… and ourselves.]
[... Perhaps the monster we fear most is the one we see reflected in the mirror. As Professor Mulrooney puts it: “The monsters in these tales are not necessarily the people we would call the monsters - Frankenstein’s creature or Dracula. The scariest part of these books is the humans.”] -Michael Davies
The real Patty then interrupts the vision, and asks Henry if he can help her find her mother using his powers. He’s wary of doing so, but agrees to help her. He says she will have to come with him to his attic.
Once inside, Patty tells him that it’s cold in there. Henry says he likes it cold.
When Henry enters the void, he successfully locates Patty’s mom. She’s a singer, a show girl, working on a stage in Vegas. Patty asks him what she looks like. Henry says she looks like Patty. That she’s beautiful.
Suddenly, he loses control, and is once again visited by the Mind Flayer. Patty’s mom morphs into a terrifying figure who chases Henry through the void… and eventually catches him.
We see the Mindflayer going into Henry inside the void, very similar to Will in Season 2 on the school field. (This happens either at this moment, or in a flashback at another point of the play. But it’s at some point!!) I think this was showing us that whoever Henry was, he’s fast disappearing into the darkness of the Mind Flayer, and vice versa - it’s like a fusion.
Meanwhile, Mr Newby learns that Patty and Henry have been hanging out together a lot. He’s greatly displeased by this, and decides to go to the Creel House to fetch Patty and put an end to the budding romance. Romeo and Juliet vibes be vibing hard.
Downstairs, he speaks to Victor Creel, who is having a PTSD related episode and acting strangely. He says his wife believes the house is haunted by an ancient demon, and with everything that’s happened (and by how the lights keep flashing), he’s beginning to believe her. He feels like his demons have followed him from the war.
Mr Newby then overhears the commotion from upstairs, and goes up to investigate. In the attic, Henry is holding Patty’s hand very tightly. He’s twitching and yelling as he fights against the Mind Flayer’s possession, and this frightens Patty. When her father walks in, he demands that Patty lets go of Henry’s hand. She tries, but he’s holding on too tightly. “I can’t!” Patty cries out.
Mr Newby is then attacked by Henry, controlled by the Mind Flayer. His body starts to rise up. Patty encourages Henry to fight back by telling him that she believes he is good, and that she loves him.
“Say it back!” she pleads to him. “Say it back!”
Henry responds and says he loves her too. Because of the love exchange, he manages to momentarily break out of the Mind Flayer’s control: Mr Newby drops to the floor, alive but badly injured.
Joyce, Hopper and Bob were downstairs at this point, having followed radio anomalies to the Creel House (which they did via a machine that Bob built for them). They freak out and run away, and all come to the conclusion that creepy, crazy Victor Creel is the one responsible for Mr Newby’s injuries, as well as the string of violent animal deaths.
[Joyce has some basis for believing Victor capable of violent crime, based as this may be in her own father’s war experience… When Joyce opens her copy of the DSM, first published in 1952, she will find no entry for PTSD… Instead, the symptoms she might recognise from her father were incorporated into depression or schizophrenia, rather than their own diagnosis. Short of a name for what they were suffering, traumatised veterans were left to find their own way through nightmares - through violence, alcohol or isolation.] -Beth Kelly (from the Stranger Things: The First Shadow programme)
After the commotion, Henry removes his blindfold. Patty's father has broken through the attic floor, and he’s seriously injured. Patty is very afraid and upset. After a brief time skip (to the next day or two I think), we learn that Patty is staying away from Henry, who is worried that he’s ruined everything. The Mind Flayer starts to creep back in. We see a possessed Henry back in the attic, and Virginia comes up to him and says that she wants to help him, but she doesn’t know how. She reminds him that he needs to stay away from people to protect them. She talks about Patty, telling Henry that he shouldn’t see her anymore.
Possessed!Henry smirks and asks her if she’s jealous. There’s something insidious and disturbing in the way he asks it. Virginia recoils from her son and her “everything-is-going-to-be-okay” facade crumbles. We see she’s absolutely terrified of who Henry has become.
Henry creates a vision, so that it appears as though his pet spiders escape from their jars, and they run all over Virginia as she screams. She flees from the attic as Henry’s dark taunts follow her.
Henry’s sister Alice comes to the mouth of the attic. "Where is Henry?" She asks.
Henry: "He’s right here."
Alice: "You’re not him."
At this point, it was like the Mindflayer had almost completely merged with Henry. The lines had become more and more blurred as the play went on, and now it’s becoming hard to separate them - the ‘real’ Henry is finding it hard to come through and fight the possession. The Mind Flayer is winning.
This really reminded me of Will and his own possession with the Mindflayer in Season 2. How they described it like a virus taking over, and how Will could have continued ‘disappearing’ until there was no more Will left.
After the incident with Mr Newby, and her terror with Henry in the attic, Virginia has finally had enough. She willingly hands her son over to an “interested party” who describes himself as a doctor (who we know is Dr Brenner). He vows to take Henry to Hawkins Lab, where he’ll be safe, and contained.
When he wakes up in the hospital, Mr Newby reveals to Patty that he actually stole her as a baby (?) in an effort to revive his relationship with his wife by having another child to care for - but it didn’t work, and his wife left him. He feels guilty about it, and wants to confess this to her after he almost died.
He tells her that he was attacked by a monster who made him relive his worst nightmares, and that “the boy”, Henry, actually fought back and saved him from death. He then draws the Mind Flayer on a piece of paper, hands it to his daughter, and tells her that this is what he saw.
After learning that Henry actually saved her father, Patty returns to his house to search for him, but it’s too late - Dr. Brenner has already taken him to the lab. However, she is able to communicate by calling out to him.
Henry contacts Patty through the void, where she is able to both speak and see him, despite him being at the lab. She tells him that she knows he is still a good person, and that he should return home.

Act 2.
On screen:
Chapter Two: Captain Midnight
So here’s the thing - the play paints us a totally different picture than Season 4 did in regards to Henry/Vecna.
Henry was not inherently evil, like S4 suggested to many people - he was actually just a regular boy until an incident’ occurred when he was younger, which is what gave him powers and started his possession in the first place. The end of S4 makes us think that El sent Henry to the Upside Down, which is where he meets the shadow monster and morphs it into the Mind Flayer with his powers.
But that wasn’t Henry’s first time there, nor was it the first time he saw the Mind Flayer. That was all just a REUNION.
It’s revealed that Henry actually disappeared into another dimension (Dimension X/ Upside Down) for a period of 12 hours when he was just a kid. He got lost near some caves in the Nevada desert, and when he returned, he had "completely changed in personality".
He came back odd, ‘not normal’, and couldn’t socialise well. He also returned with dangerous powers, which he violently inflicts on animals. The Mind Flayer had clearly started possessing him from that early point, way before he even came to Hawkins.
Let’s go back to the very beginning of the play - to the soldiers on the ship. It was Brenner’s father and his crew that were aboard this ship, the USS Eldridge, which had accidentally travelled into Dimension X/The Upside Down as a result of electromagnetic activity.
This is based on The Philadelphia Experiment, or Project Rainbow, said to have taken place in the Second World War. The programme had a double spread on this:
[Allegedly, wartime experiments caused the supernatural disappearance of a US naval ship… Project Rainbow was based on Einstein’s research into unified field theory through which [he] hoped to create a single theoretical framework to encompass all fundamental forces, including electromagnetism and gravity.]
[Carl Allen claimed to have witnessed a strange event in October 1943 involving the naval destroyer escort USS Eldridge and scientists who were working on highly confidential technology which would make ships invisible to the enemy by using powerful electromagnetic fields to ‘bend’ light around them. According to Allen, they succeeded in doing just that. In fact, Allen said the ship was also briefly teleported 275 miles away to Norfolk, Virginia, before reappearing in Philadelphia. …It’s been suggested that the Eldridge’s official logs could have been deliberately altered… with the whole of Project Rainbow moving beyond top secret clarification.] -Catherine Jones
Brenner’s father is the only survivor of this terrifying event. After returning from Dimension X and taken to a hospital, injured and dying, we learn that his blood type is now “unique” from any other human being. He won't survive a blood transfusion. His ravings about Dimension X before his death haunted and inspired Brenner for the rest of his life. Brenner started an experiment focused on finding and travelling back to Dimension X; his ultimate goal was to "create a gate" to reach it again.
Brenner enacted these experiments in the Nevada desert, where one day, one of his agents ran away with some of Brenner’s equipment near some desert caves. The agent was never found, but a Captain Midnight spyglass was - which was the exact spot where Henry went missing in Dimension X as a little boy for 12 hours. Brenner therefore began searching for the mysterious Captain Midnight comic-book fan who went to Dimension X and returned, watching him and keeping an eye on him. This is what led him to Hawkins: following Henry.
Brenner tells us that Henry’s powers emerged after he visited Dimension X, and just like his father, his blood type is “unique”. He collects several samples from him. He also tells Henry that his powers become stronger each time he kills, and that’s why he gets so much satisfaction out of it. Brenner also tells Henry that he would get even stronger if he kills human beings, rather than animals.
During one scene, Brenner uses special equipment to see into and hear Henry's mind. He pushes Henry to the limit so he can hear and catch a glimpse of Dimension X. We hear noises similar to the Mind Flayer in Season 2 when Will goes into the Upside Down on Halloween night. The shape of the Mind Flayer appears on the screen (or was it the head of a Demogorgon? It was definitely something Upside-Downy), while Henry convulses. After this incident, Henry asks Brenner, “Can you take me back there?"
Brenner also introduces the idea of anger to fuel Henry's power. On several instances he riles Henry up to get him angry, insulting him - and the result is always violence. He succeeds in getting Henry to kill a mouse/rat, which explodes into a bloody mess inside its cage, and then tries to convince him to kill a criminal who has been transferred to the lab with an agreement to be killed (he has a date with the electric chair later that week regardless).
Henry refuses. He’s been speaking to Patty in the void, who has convinced him that he’s good and that he should return home. Brenner is frustrated with this, and becomes sure that Henry has someone that is "holding him back". He vows to find and remove this obstacle. But after Henry leaves the lab, Brenner tells his agents to let him go. He cannot force Henry to kill. “It has to be his choice."
Brenner is shown to have significant influence over Virginia. He’s been providing her with medication/tranquilisers, and tells her that her son desperately needs his help. He encourages Virginia to tell him who the person Henry is attached to. She does. Brenner promises her that he will take Henry back into the lab and that he won’t leave again.
After Henry returns home, he reads his family's minds and learns that they are all afraid of him and unhappy with his return. He goes into his mother's memories and learns of the last interaction she had with Brenner, including that she wonders if he “may never have been good”, and whether "this was who he was the whole time." He knows that she was willing to give him up to Brenner forever.
This is when the Creel murders happen, just like they’re shown in Season 4. Virginia Creel and Alice Creel are both murdered at the dinner table - and we know Victor is going to be blamed for it.
Is this Henry’s own mind now, turned to darkness and hate, or is it the Mind Flayer intent on eliminating all of Henry’s attachments? A monster who’s made a monster. I think it’s all left open to interpretation on purpose.
After the death of his mother and sister, Henry goes straight to Hawkins High to find Patty, hoping to reach her before Brenner does. While at the school, he runs into Joyce, who voices to him her suspicions surrounding the animal killings, and what happened to Mr Newby at the Creel House.
At first, Henry thinks Joyce has worked it out, and that she knows it was him all along. “I wish you hadn’t done that…” he says, stepping closer. But Joyce clarifies just in time that she believes Henry’s father is the one who is dangerous, and that she believes he’s responsible for the terrible things that've happened in Hawkins recently. Maybe this is what gives Henry the idea to frame his father. Either way, he leaves Joyce alive.
Both Brenner and Henry find Patty on the stage rafters, up on a high catwalk, ready to perform her part in the play. She’s initially wearing a set of wings as a prop, which are attached to the rafter to be lowered. Henry unties her from these wings, pleading with her to run away with him. An argument ensues with Brenner, where he attempts to convince Henry that Patty is his weakness, and that he needs to kill her to let her go. Patty tells Henry not to listen to him.
During this argument, Henry loses control once more, and the Mind Flayer takes over. This results in Patty slow-motion falling from the rafters as the shape of the Mind Flayer overwhelms the stage. She hits the floor on her back, presumed dead.
(The stage effects for this particular scene were absolutely incredible, by the way.)
Henry is later seen back at the lab. He’s fully subdued, confined to a straitjacket, mouth gagged, and sat in a wheelchair. Brenner says the implant (Soteria) is in, about to take effect.
If we believe what Season 4 showed us, the play skipped the part where Henry appeared dead alongside his mother and sister (just before Victor is then blamed and incarcerated at Pennhurst Asylum). So assuming that Brenner played a part in covering up Henry’s involvement in the Creel murders, Henry is presumed dead by the town at this point too. Unfortunately the play doesn’t address this, as instead we see Henry run immediately from the dinner table murder scene, straight to Hawkins High to find Patty. It’s a big inconsistency which I guess they want us to explain away with Henry being an “unreliable narrator” in the show. I guess he gave Nancy the abridged version of what happened!
Anyway, it appears that Henry later finds Patty in the void, despite Brenner telling him that he killed her. It seems she has successfully left Hawkins and found her mother in Las Vegas, just as she always dreamed of doing. She uses a walking stick, but otherwise appears alive and well.
We hear and see static as Henry watches the scene unfold, and Patty glances over her shoulder, like she senses him. But then she turns her back and walks into the distance with her mother.
An alternative take that I heard from someone, was that perhaps Patty is truthfully still seriously injured and is actually in a coma (similar to Max). They thought that maybe the final scene of Patty with her mother was actually just something that Henry was creating for her in her mind, as a sort of last semblance of goodness and love. I don’t think that’s what was intended, but it was an interesting take that I wanted to include!
As the show nears its end, we’re presented with a series of newspaper articles relaying the tragic Creel Murders in Hawkins (possibly the same ones that Nancy and Robin find in Season 4). The Creel family all dead, Victor is blamed and sent to the asylum. The empty Creel House remains, a reminder of the horrors. It then shifts back to Hawkins lab, who are now recruiting pregnant women for experimentation.
Brenner introduces a pregnant woman to Henry (who is still bound to a chair and fully subdued) and explains to him that the "blood transfusion" finally worked on a subject. He points to the woman's belly and remarks, “One, meet Two!" “You are as much a father to them as I am,” Brenner says at one point. Then, “Come… meet your brothers and sisters.” Even though we know Henry is not in any way related to the lab kids, they definitely played into the father/guardian/creator metaphor in the play. If not family by blood, then by circumstance.
We see photos of the babies created in the lab, with their numbers underneath. We can recognise Eight as young Kali. Eventually we get to Ten, at which point the stage focuses on a now older Henry, wearing his recognisable Season 4 orderly outfit. He kneels beside a child with buzzed hair.
"Hello, Eleven. Come with me.” He takes her by the hand, and they walk into the distance together.
———
Some final thoughts:
Because of the incident with Patty during Joyce's play, we can infer that's why she is unsuccessful in her goal to impress the university, and remains stuck in Hawkins - just like Lonnie said she would.
Lonnie is awful, and I’m in two minds about how he’s handled in the play. They did a good job to show he’s always been a douchebag, and unlike what I’ve seen some people say, I actually think it was horribly believable that Joyce (who they establish likes 'bad boys') ends up going back to him and having kids with him. We know from Season 1 that there’s emotional abuse with Joyce and Lonnie, and to me, it makes horrible, horrible sense that it all ends up the way it does. I’m just not sure how I feel about Lonnie being used as any kind of comedic effect in the play (he makes a brief reappearance at the police station, where he’s been lying drunkenly handcuffed on some chairs the whole time during a scene... “It wasn’t me! I didn’t do it!" he says, or something to that effect). I feel like using him in that way diminishes how truly awful he is as a character. Maybe I’m just being too sensitive, but I’d much rather they had kept all the laughs and jokes for the other characters, and treated Lonnie completely seriously the whole way through. I don’t want to see him in any way ‘likeable’ or ‘relatable’ or ‘funny’, you know? Not even for cheap audience laughs. This is a guy who called his own kid son a f*g. Let's treat that with the gravity and solemnity it deserves, please.
Louis McCartney and Ella Karuna Williams as Henry Creel and Patty were great, and Isabella Pappas as Joyce was amazing. Dr Brenner was nicely emulated by Patrick Vaill (I personally think he was one of the most believable characters from stage to show). The best performance of all though was Christopher Buckley as Bob. Like, damn, give that kid all the awards! He was so believable as a young Bob, I actually forgot it wasn’t somehow a young Sean Astin on stage. *chef’s kiss*
As previously mentioned, all the parents of the kids are present in the play (and already coupled up). None of these characters are particularly fleshed out, and I think they’re mainly just there as fun ‘Easter Eggs’ to connect it with the show. E.g having Claudia own another cat that gets killed, seeing Ted Wheeler ironically as some kind of jock god who gets all the ladies (and cheats on Karen with, by the way!), Joyce holding an axe prop near the end mid-rant (“Why am I holding this??”) and Hopper making a remark about breaking his own foot (which he does in Season 4).
They definitely seemed to be going back on the whole ‘it was Henry/Vecna the whole time’ thing from Season 4: the Mind Flayer has been pulling the strings from way before El sent Henry to Dimension X/Upside Down. We even see the Mind Flayer in the shape of a giant eldritch spider during the play, way before Henry appears to ‘shape’ it in Season 4. However, I think it’s also possible that Henry DID actually manage to take control of the Mind Flayer the second time he arrived in Dimension X (as we see at the end of S4). At that point, he’s killed all the lab kids and staff at Hawkins Lab, so he will be much more powerful now compared to the Henry from the play. By now he’s completely embraced the Mind Flayer’s philosophy, and is acting in its stead entirely on his own volition. Honestly? I think they’re going to leave it ambiguous on purpose. I think that’s why the play is technically canon, but totally not necessary before seeing Season 5. I think Henry and the Mindflayer are 'one' (lol) at this point - I think that’s what Vecna technically is. He’s like an amalgamation of this terrifying eldritch being that we can never begin to understand, but at the same time also something that is still deeply, deeply human.
The Henry side of him seems to be lost, but in a way Brenner was right - his feelings for Patty, whether ‘Puppy Love’ or real - was his one redeeming weakness in his early teen years. Judging from the play, I think it’s possible we might see a tragic sort of redemption moment in S5 (which I personally have mixed feelings about). But I do believe the play is supposed to be entirely separate, and that it’s possible Patty will continue not to be mentioned or relevant in the show (I hope I’m wrong). I just can’t help but be cautious in assuming the Mind Flayer is still the one in control after what they set up at the end of Season 4 (especially with Will saying, “it’s weird to know who it was this whole time” re: his own kidnapping and possession). I think Henry has become his darkest self as Vecna.
Speaking of Will… there were noticeably a LOT of parallels with him in Henry. Henry wears pretty much exactly Will’s outfit from Season 4, yellow tones with beige and brown. Meanwhile Patty wears a blue cardigan and a blue dress - at least in Act 1. I’m not hugely into the blue-and-yellow thing in a serious way, but even I noticed there were blue and yellow motifs for Henry and Patty. She wears a bright yellow top with her blue cardigan at one point too. I think there was definitely a mixture of both Will and El in Henry’s character.
Meanwhile Patty had noticeable similarities to Mike. She’s rebellious, outspoken, loves comic books, and worships superheroes.
Seeing the play hasn’t impacted my beliefs or hopes for Byler in any way. I think there are potentially good things to be taken from the writing, and potentially bad things too. My current confidence has neither been raised nor lowered, but what I will say is that it’s undeniable that the Henry x Patty relationship mirrors both Mileven and Byler, but especially Mileven. Hentty is obviously a star-crossed tragedy, deliberately set up like Romeo and Juliet, which we know is NEVER a good thing. I do find it interesting that their love confessions were an exchange, unlike Mike’s monologue. Patty is the one ‘present’, whilst Henry is the one trapped in the void with his eyes closed/blindfold on. It’s a high stakes moment. Patty tells Henry in desperation that she loves him, but she follows this up by pleading with him to say it back. I didn’t see anyone else talking about this, but it really stood out to me.
The play’s themes and messages still reflected what I believe the show to be about: rejecting forced conformity (it dealt with people’s ideas about what it means to be “normal” to fit in, about sex not being taboo, harmful black and white morality, and the damage that can occur from enforcing religious dogma)... and of course, like Joyce said, that love will ultimately conquer fear. Over and out!
[This kind of introspection throws up unsettling and complex ideas about the nature of human morality. What does it mean to be human? Who gets to decide who is “other”? How do we treat those who are different from us? These are huge issues, and far too esoteric for most of us to deal with in abstract. So the way we choose to explore them is in stories.] - Michael Davies

Reader is a mutant with the ability to turn sound into light who was 'adopted' aka stolen as a child by Baron Von Strucker to use for experimentation. She was given a form of the Super soldier serum so in addition to her mutant abilities she also has super strength, enhanced senses and healing. When he starts experimenting on his volunteers, the Maximoff twins, she tries to convince them to escape with her but they tell the Baron that she's planning to escape so he doubles her cell security. Steve and reader met when the team recovered Loki's scepter from Strucker.
She falls in love with Steve and becomes good friends with Nat but they aren't the friends she thinks they are.
This story is canon adjacent except that Thanos never happened.
Chapter 1
After Y/N had slept for almost 24 hours and eaten enough to fill her up, Nat approached her in the kitchen.
"Tony is having a party tonite, to celebrate finding Loki's scepter. He gave me his credit card so do you want to go get a dress for tonite? And maybe some clothes so you aren't stuck in Avengers sweats all the time? We can have lunch and get our hair and nails done as well." She smirked "We can find a blue dress for you, it's Steve's favorite color."
Y/N felt her face flush "Why would I be worried about what Steve likes?"
Nat grinned "I'm a spy, I know how to read people and both of you are giving off some serious vibes. Trust me, he's into you too."
Y/N shrugged "I don't know what you're talking about but I do need some clothes and I've never had a real haircut. I just chop it off when it gets too long." She thought for a minute "Sure, sounds like fun."
They left the tower in one of Tony's cars that Nat borrowed. Driving around Manhattan Y/N felt overwhelmed but something was familiar as well.
"This is all so much. I haven't even left the facility where you found me in years."
"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly" Nat told her as they pulled into a parking garage on 5th Ave. "Having access to Starks credit and cars definitely helps." She parked and they got out of the car and walked into Saks.
Nat headed straight for evening wear and started looking through the racks when a sales person approached them.
"Ms Romanoff, it's so good to have you here again. I see you've brought a friend" she looked Y/N up and down, sneering slightly at her attire. "I can see she needs our help. What are you looking for today?"
Nat glared at her "We're looking for someone who won't be a bitch because of how we look. Do you have anyone here like that?"
The sales girl, her tag said her name was Sophia, blanched "I'm so sorry, Ms Romanoff, I was just caught off guard. Of course I'm happy to help you in whatever way you need.
Are you looking for a cocktail dress?"
Nat smirked "Yes, Tony is having a party tonite and my friend needs an appropriate dress. Something blue."
Sophia stuttered "Tony Stark? How exciting. Why don't you and Miss...."
"Y/L/N, I'm Y/N Y/L/N"
"Of course. What size do you usually wear Miss Y/L/N?"
Y/N flushed "I don't know, I haven't gotten myself new clothes in ages"
Sophia pulled out a tape measure "Well lets see..." And quickly took her measurements. "A size 7 should fit nicely. I have some dresses that would be perfect for you. Please have a seat and I'll have them brought over.
Can I get you something to drink? Coffee, water, tea, soda, champagne?"
Nat nodded "Some champagne would be nice. And none of the cheap stuff."
They spent an hour looking at dresses until they narrowed it down to 3. All shades of blue. Y/N tried them all on and was overwhelmed when she saw herself in the mirror, she felt like a princess.
"I can't choose, they're all so pretty. What do you think, Nat?"
"I agree, it's too hard to choose so we'll get all three. Tony loves throwing parties so you can never be too prepared." Nat replied
Y/N shook her head "I couldn't, that's too much"
Nat laughed "too much should be Tony's middle name. Don't worry about it." She turned to Sophia "what about accessories?"
4 hours later they had all 3 dresses and accessories for each one, plus enough everyday and business style clothes to last a year. And shoes and lingerie. Nat gave Sophia a stern order to make sure it was all delivered to the tower before 4pm. Then they went for hair, makeup and mani-pedi's.
Y/N didn't know how to process everything that was happening. Less than 72 hours ago she was in her cell with no inkling that her life would change so drastically.
"Thank you so much, Nat. I just...."
Nat smirked "Don't worry about it. I have a feeling you're going to feel right at home before too long."
They went back to the tower after a late lunch and finished getting ready. At 9pm they took the elevator to the penthouse where the party was already going full swing.
Nat led her to the bar and poured a glass of champagne for both of them.
Y/N just looked around, watching people, unsure of how to interact.
Steve and Sam were playing pool when Sam noticed Steve was staring at something by the bar.
"You checking out Nat again? I thought that was over."
Steve shook his head "It never really was on, just occasional stress relief. Besides she has something going on with Bruce. Look next to her, in the blue dress. That's Y/N, we found her at the base where we found Loki's scepter. She's a mutant, turns sound into light. She was humming the other night and had this glow around her like a mist of colors. It was beautiful" he sighed.
Sam laughed "You sound smitten. Why don't you go talk to her?"
Steve blushed "I wouldn't know what to say."
"How about hey Y/N you look beautiful, wanna have my babies" Sam offered
Steve snorted "Give me a break.
It looks like Nat is busy with Bruce so I should go be a good host. Don't want to leave her alone with all these strangers. She's been a prisoner since she was a kid so might not be good socially."
Sam laughed as Steve walked away.
Y/N was looking out the window when Steve approached her. She turned and looked at him.
"It's a beautiful view"
Steve was staring at her and agreed "Yeah, it's gorgeous"
She saw he was looking at her and felt her face heat up. "So Nat said Tony throws parties like this all the time"
Steve nodded "This is actually pretty tame compared to some. Before he became Iron Man I think partying was his priority. It's still a favorite past time.
You must be overwhelmed with all this if Strucker kept you prisoner since you were 10. You'll get used to it. We are mostly a happy family." He smiled softly at her.
After the party died down the team sat around drinking and chatting. Most of them tried to pick up Thor's hammer and failed. Only Steve moved it at all but he still couldn't pick it up.
Then Ultron showed up and made a mess of everything. Y/N tried to use her powers to help fight him but was thrown against a wall and knocked out. After Ultron was gone, she came to and heard arguing. Steve helped her up and kept his hand on her back to help comfort her. Once the team decided on their course of action he took her to her room.
"I need you to stay here for now, ok? We'll be back as soon as we can" he told her gently.
Y/N shook her head "I can help. I could come with you and-"
"No" he told her firmly "We need to evaluate your abilities and work together before you get into any fights with us. I don't want you to get hurt so please be a good girl and wait here for me"
She felt a funny tingle when he called her a good girl but pushed it back "Ok. I'll wait here. Please come back safely."
"I promise, sweetheart" he kissed her softly on the lips and made sure she was safe in her room before he left.
While the team went to Africa to stop Ultron, Y/N was having dreams about Steve but with her lack of experience couldn't figure them out. The only sex she had was when Strucker forced himself on her and she thought she would never actually enjoy sex but her dreams said otherwise.
In the morning she saw what happened on the news and knew that it was Wanda messing with the Hulk. If she had been there she could have broken Wandas hex and prevented all that destruction and death.
She jumped when Jarvis spoke to her "Miss Y/N? You have a phone call from Captain Rogers."
"Umm ok how do I take the call?"
"I'll put him thru"
Steve's voice came thru the speakers in her room.
"Hey sweetheart, how are you? Did you get some sleep?"
"Hi Steve, I slept a little. I had strange dreams. My life has turned upside down.
Are you ok? I saw the news. Wanda was there wasn't she? If you had let me come I could have prevented-"
Steve cut her off "No. You don't even know if you could have helped Hulk. You aren't going on any missions any time soon.
I just wanted to let you know that we will be gone for awhile. After that mess we have to lay low. Just be a good girl and make sure you eat and sleep. I'll be back as soon as I can."
Y/N felt so helpless as she saw the teams adventures on the news. They went from Africa to Korea. She was frustrated and wanted to help but couldn't so waited for them, for Steve, to return.
When Tony and Bruce returned they barely noticed her and rushed into the lab to work on something.
Steve came to check on her and gave her a sweet kiss before she noticed the twins were with him.
Wanda looked at her "Hello Y/N. Nice to see you again"
Y/N was confused "Steve why are they here? They are nothing but trouble and can't be trusted."
Wanda cringed "I know we have done awful things to you in the past but we didn't realize how bad Strucker was, too caught up in our own rage and grief. I promise we won't hurt you. We want to help stop Ultron."
Y/N looked at Steve "If you are taking them then I should be able to go too. I can help."
Steve chuckled "I know you want to help honey but I don't think a light show will do any good."
She pouted "I can make lasers too. I hate staying here while you risk yourself. Please, Steve." She begged
Her begging did something to Steve but not something that would help in a fight. He was about to tell her no again when Clint walked by
"She's not wrong Cap we could use all the help we can get."
Steve gave in "Promise me you'll be careful. I'd hate to see you hurt."
Y/N didn't do too badly considering the circumstances. She even took out a few robots on her own, including the one that tried to get Pietro and a young boy he was protecting.
Sokovia was still destroyed but most of the people were saved. Sometimes you have to accept how things turn out.
~~~~~~~~~~
After a few days rest Y/N, Sam, Wanda and Pietro started training to become official Avengers.
Y/N and Steve started dating, taking things very slow since she was inexperienced and in no rush.
Nat was devastated that Bruce had disappeared and started spending a lot of time with Steve and Y/N. Every night he would walk Y/N to her room, kiss her good night and leave her on her own.
After a few weeks she noticed Steve and Nat seemed really close and she asked him about it.
Steve shook his head "You have nothing to worry about sweetheart. Nat and I are just friends. We've been thru some tough situations together but there's no romantic feelings. She's just lonely because she misses Bruce."
She nodded trusting him.
They went on like this for awhile until General Ross brought up the Sokovia Accords. She took Steve's side but he didn't want her involved in the fight so she made her way to the quinjet and waited for Steve and Bucky. She saw what Zemo did and the fight that came after but couldn't bring herself to hurt Tony so found herself waiting on the jet again.
Y/N went with them to Wakanda and then on the run with Steve and Sam. After months dating, Steve told her he loved her and then told her he had to leave for a couple of days to meet up with Nat for cash and intel. They met up every few weeks and he always came back in a lighter mood.
One time when he returned he asked Y/N for a favor
"I don't want to be separated but Shuri figured out how to remove Bucky's brainwashing and I want you to go help him. Just be a friend. He really likes you and I think it would be good for both of you. You're the only one I can ask, he has bad history with Sam and Nat. I promise I'll come visit when I can."
She looked at him sadly, not wanting to leave the man she had fallen in love with but wanting to make him happy and be his good girl so she went to Wakanda.
Y/N and Bucky became close friends. She didn't mind if he didn't want to talk and they would just be together. If he did want to talk she listened without judgement and she was there for his nightmares. She helped him tend his goats and thought she could have fallen for him if she hadn't met Steve first.
A couple of times a week Steve would call to check up on her but it was always brief because Nat always called him away after a few minutes. He kept promising he would come visit but something always came up.
One day, Shuri showed up at Bucky's hut where Bucky and Y/N were playing chess."I have news, Captain Rogers contacted me and told me to tell you, Thor and Hulk have returned. Asgard was destroyed and all of the Asgardians that survived are here, setting up a home in Norway. New Asgard.
That's not all, the Captain and Tony Stark have worked things out with Gen Ross and Sargeant Barnes is being pardoned. You can go home soon, back to the states but there will be a celebration in New Asgard in a month.
Y/N wondered why Steve didn't call her and went thru Shuri instead but she was trusting and believed he just had too much to do.
Y/N and Bucky spent the next month as they had spent time in the past, strengthening their friendship, enjoying nature and herding goats. They both expected Steve to show up at any time but he never did. He only called once and explained that he was very busy helping Thor and Valkyrie set the new town up. Y/N told him they could help but Steve insisted they stay in Wakanda.
Finally it was time to leave, both of them were excited at being reunited with Steve but also nervous at meeting a whole new group of people.
Steve came in the quinjet to pick them up and after a quick hug and kiss on the cheek he spent the rest of the flight talking to Bucky. Y/N realized they were best friends but she had hoped for a better reunion with her love. She sat alone trying to talk herself down from the anxiety that was building up.
When they arrived in New Asgard the whole team was there to greet them. Nat and Bruce were wrapped around each other while Wanda and Vision were holding hands. Steve was suddenly in a bad mood right after they landed and left saying he just needed to work it off. Nat disappeared shortly after.
Thor gave Y/N a fond greeting and introduced her to Val. They took her and Bucky to a dressmaker to create Asgardian style robes for the celebration the next night. Steve didn't come to see her at all so she figured he was still busy helping and she stayed up talking to Bucky until they were both exhausted and fell asleep in the early hours of the morning.
The Wedding Day
St.Patrick's Cathedral, 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NYC.
I exhaled, whispering silent nothings to myself. Feeling sick in my gut, I sat, in front of the mirror, taking deep breaths. It's okay, just a little anxiety. It will go away once I see him, wouldn't it? I gaze at my reflection, the slight feeling of a swell, a bloat, rather, until I was sure I was very ready. I could hear the music coming from downstairs, it was nerve-racking already.
"Cherry..!" Rowan's call snapped me out of my endless stare.
Tony was downstairs, waiting as the ringbearer, the bridesmaids were waiting, the flower girls too, were all ready. I nodded, my hand shaky as I held the lilacs and amaryllis in hand, I swallowed. It was time.
I slowly slipped my hand into Papaa's, giving him a silent 'thank you.' My gaze was soft towards him. I breathed out, slowly, as we descended the aisle, the flower girls ahead of us, small handfulls of petals scattering around as they passed further, I took slow steps down, the people coming into view. The bridesmaids waiting at the sides of the path for a welcome. My gaze was unwavering, I had come to present. I had come for what I wanted to claim this day. I was happy. Not a smile, but I held something rather calm. The music resonating every wall of the cathedral, all eyes holding still at the sight. The golden of the light was radiant, much more visible at day in the tall structure. I could recognise the faces, of course, Rowan was walking right behind me. I could see Tony, I could see Priest Loki, I could see Steve, I could see my dear bridesmaids. I could see all of them.
But then again, there was that feeling of vector resistance; the feeling of him, pulling at the strings of time, again, it was slowing down when his gaze met mine. There he was, my pretty boy. Mister. It was almost as if a feather punctured my lungs that moment, he could see me; I could see him. That strange intimacy of the moment when we caught each other in the fibres of time and no one else existed for that strange instant.
'James Barnes. My Bucky.'
He was proud, I could tell. That head tilt gave away much of what he was thinking, and what better than having a well observant fiance..no, wife. Wife. Surreal to even think of It, I sighed. I reached before him and neither uttered a sentence. An underlying tension to the flurries of emotions burying it deep inside.
On reaching, Papaa stepped back, nudging me forward. I stepped ahead, my gaze almost...frantically flicking between Loki and James. With assertion, he began.
“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the sight of God and in the presence of this company, to witness and bless the union of Darling Carmel Felicity Grace and James Buchanan Barnes in holy matrimony. Marriage is a gift from God, a sacred bond, a commitment not to be entered into lightly but reverently and with deep love. Today, we celebrate the love that has brought them together, and the journey they will continue hand in hand.”
My breath hitches. It was happening.
“Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we invite Your presence into this sacred moment. Bless this union of Darling and James as they pledge their lives to one another. May their hearts always be full of compassion, understanding, and forgiveness. We ask that You guide their steps, and may their love be a reflection of Your love for all. Amen.”
He turns to us both.
“Darling and James, today you will make your vows to each other. These promises will be the foundation upon which you build your life together. Please turn to each other, and as you hold hands, speak the words from your heart.”
I look through the provided page, my hands shakily reaching to hold his.
I clear my throat.
"James, from the moment we met, you have been my strength, my laughter, and my greatest joy...I vow to love you...through all of life's seasons, to stand by your side in moments of joy and challenge...I promise to be your faithful partner, to support your dreams as if they were my own...and to cherish every moment we share. With all that I am, I give you my heart, today and always."
My eyes twitched with tiny tears prickling at their corners. It was welling up in my chest.
He reached for his own, gaze meeting mine, before I sensed the vulnerability in his voice.
"Darling, you have shown me what true love looks like—patient, enduring, and kind. Today, I stand here, promising to be your rock, your safe place, and your greatest supporter. I vow to honor you, respect you, and be faithful to you in every way. Together, I know we can face anything, and I will walk with you through every challenge and every joy. You are my heart, my hope, and my forever."
A pause, when Tony comes forward, our ring-bearer. He gives us both a little smile, I knew that smug rascal had gotten the engravings on the ring just as I wanted them. I give him a little knowing look, a thankful nod. He stands behind James, knowing that he was needed here.
“These rings are a symbol of the unbroken circle of love. Just as the ring has no end, so shall your love be without end. James, take Darling's hand and place this ring on her finger as a symbol of your commitment."
“With this ring, I give you my heart, my soul, and all that I am. Wear this ring as a reminder of my eternal love.” He spoke.
“Darling, take James’s hand and place this ring on his finger as a symbol of your commitment.”
“With this ring, I give you my love, my trust, and all that I will ever be. Wear this ring as a symbol of our unending journey together.” I said, my voice nearly sounding like it was breaking.
He looks to us again, starting with a few final declarations.
"Darling Carmel Felicity Grace, do you take James Buchanan Barnes to be your lawfully wedded husband? To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"
"I do." I shudder, a shiver of thrill down my spine.
"James Buchanan Barnes, do you take Darling Carmel Felicity Grace to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?"
"I do." he speaks, a waver in his voice.
"Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; Love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor." (Romans 12:9-10) “May the Lord bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May His presence be with you always, and may He give you peace. As you embark on this new chapter, may your love continue to grow and flourish, and may you always seek the divine in each other.”
My eyes flickered rapidly, Rowan wasn't here behind me...who would tell me that my mascara was expensive...that I shouldn't be overwhelmed like this...
“By the power vested in me by God and the state, I now pronounce you husband and wife. What God has joined together, let no one separate. James, you may now kiss your bride.''
The cathedral echoes of orchestral renditions, applause, cheers, and so much more that happened, and yet it all was kept out of my mind, when his lips captured mine, gentle, only due to etiquette. A few tears slip down my cheek, his thumb collecting them all, sliding them away between the kiss. When we pull away for a breath, is when I realize, the stain of my lipstick that I had left onto his lips.
We break out into a quiet giggle. As we thank Loki for the ceremony, we make our way down the cathedral, wishes raining down on us with the petals, and yet it all seemed so drastically unreal.
__________________________________________
Sitting around a table, were all of us, for the post-marriage dinner, I exhale, as Steve, Our best Man, stood up, clinking his glass for his speech and a toast.
[ @the-capsicle Please insert your speech when you reblog. ]
The speech wells up emotions. Steve has always been a man of the softer words, yes. He had his way around gravitating emotionally towards people, also yes. I too, was holding back the small ache in my throat, as James pulled the punk in for a hug.
And then so, followed by a night of music and dance, wine and a lot of spilled secrets at late night, and a little kiss goodnight, is how it all concluded. The Big Day.
27.09.2024. The Wedding.
Yours Officially, Mr. and Mrs. Barnes.
28-29.08.24 | BGC
Things we planned the night we met up
Planned to watch Love Child because we were not able to catch its screening in this year's Cinemalaya run. Because I still have work to do on that day, she agreed to watch in a cinema near my place. Last full show is at 2020H in Market! Market! The movie was nice although I'd rate it a fair 2.5/5 because some of the dialogues were really cringey, add to it the ending that felt short. But as a sister of a child with CP, the story felt close to my heart. Will probably make a review on another post if sinipag ako haha.
Planned to have early dinner. Earlier that day, she asked if I want to have dinner first before the screening so I agreed but told her that I have limited time lang since my work will end at 5pm and will need an hour to get ready. We met at Central Square around 1840H and had dinner in Va Bene. I haven't been here in a while and I am pleased that the pasta remains top notch. I had Pomodoro while she had Mushroom Truffle, then we shared an arugula salad which I really liked but she was not a fan of because mapait daw lol.
Things we did not plan the night we met up
Unplanned twinning. She laughed when she saw me because we were both wearing gray long sleeved shirts and black jeans. It was a wise decision not to wear my white converse (because I know we were going to walk a lot so I wore my Nike running shoes.) otherwise, we were gonna match as well. lol.
Unplanned coffee after movie. The movie ended around 2200H and we walked a couple blocks from Market! Market! to Pocofino in 5th ave. We had Iced Pocofino Latte as it is a best seller daw. Pretty disappointed though because it was a little too sweet for our preference. Around 2am, there was less crowd so we were able to take a few photos and they came out really cute. We left after because the cafe gets busier by the hour.
Unplanned walk around BGC. We went to Mcdonald's in BGC Stopover but sat by the benches in front because we were still full from dinner and already had coffee. There was a drunk girl being ushered by her friend to a grab car and she jokingly asked if I had ever been that drunk before. Told her I was the friend that ushers people into their rides lol.
Unplanned walk in the park. The crowd is starting to fill in so we walked towards Burgos Circle because it's one of the places I know that doesn't have much people at the wee hours of the morning. There were already a few people having their morning jog as it was already past 4am. Sat there with her until the skies turned from dark to light.
Unplanned breakfast. At around 0700H we decided to walk around a bit more because we haven't finished our conversation. Luckily, the Pancake House on 31st is already open so we had breakfast.
Unplanned PDA. Idk when it started or who initiated but for the past 5x that we met up, she has always been mindful with proximity because I have stated my aversion with physical contact. However, at Pocofino our fingers were touching and when we left the cafe, our hands were clasped together. Even leaned in and hugged at Pancake House. Idk what's happening. Help.
Unplanned confession hour. As someone who overthinks and overanalyzes things, I brought up the topic of our "friendship." You see, we met online in March 2023, back when I was grieving for a recently ended relationship and while that interaction was brief, it brought comfort. A few months later, in June, she messaged me again to see how I was doing and we have been in contact since. She was there on my drunk nights, on my unemployed nights, and even when I decided to date again and got into another relationship (that one ended a month and a half ago.) We finally met in person last June, then celebrated our birthdays together. (As I was dumped a week before my birthday.) and has been talking everyday since then.
I know it's too early, too soon, and just had to open the conversation about it. She said that she had always wanted me in her life but she isn't sure if we should take our relationship to another level because it might ruin our "friendship". She did make a lot of points but I'd say it's not much of a clarity so I told her that we might need to set some boundaries. She agreed then asked if I want to watch Mula sa Buwan this Sunday, September 1st. Hahahaha. Idk. All I know is I enjoy spending time with her but I am aware that I need more time on my own, especially since I have only been single for a month. Not closing any doors, but also not pursuing anything in the meantime. I just hope she stay in my life for a long time.
Hi there - it's the Muggle! :) Thanks for the enthusiastic invitation to share some thoughts! Why don't I start with my Muggle impressions of Jungkook since you brought that up on your blog? Please feel free not to post this or edit out anything you wouldn't want on your blog. I'm still basically a stranger in a strange land when it comes to BTS and K-pop in general. I don't know the customs, taboos, and shibboleths, so I never know when I might put my foot in it!
I should start by saying that prior to July 14, 2023, I didn't know who Jungkook was. I didn't know the names of *any* BTS members. I couldn't tell them apart. I couldn't have picked one of them out of a lineup. I knew *of* BTS. I'd seen a few of their music videos from my YouTube recs, and I'd seen them perform on TV a few times -- mostly late-night talk shows.
In May 2019 they did a live performance in NYC's Central Park for Good Morning America. I live in NY and that appearance was a local news story, because kids were sleeping out on 5th Avenue for days to get in. So I think I wound up watching it just because it was in the news. I can't even recall if I watched it live, or later on YouTube. They did "Boy with Luv," which I sort of recognized, and "Fire," which I didn't know at the time. It was...a magical performance. It put such a smile on my face and I thought the audience was as enchanting as the band themselves. There was just something so joyful and unique and *special* about it. It stayed with me enough that when the pandemic hit the following year, I would sometimes pull up that video to watch again.
That explains why I tuned in to see Jungkook on Good Morning America this July. Once again, I only found about out it because it was a local news story: people camping out on 5th Ave. for a chance to get in. Sadly, the live broadcast never happened because there was a lightning storm and the park had to be evacuated. GMA aired a pre-recorded sound check instead. And that may have been why it felt like something was missing? I thought Jungkook looked very young, and very cute, and quite nervous. And I thought he looked a little lonely without the rest of the group. It may have just been me, mentally comparing this performance to the 2019 one. His energy seemed off, but you know...it was a sound check! And you can see the sky literally turning black behind him! They might've already suspected that the broadcast was going to be canceled. And the weather was overall humid and revolting. So, not the best conditions, especially for making a solo debut. I literally thought, "Poor kid!"
From there I watched the "Seven" video, the non-explicit one. I thought it was a perfectly OK pop tune. Top 40-ready. Again, I thought Jungkook was very cute and very young.
Then I heard there was a second, explicit version of "Seven," and I just thought...well, of *course* there is. Because this artist *is* very cute and very young and sex just seems to be the hackneyed shortcut to "maturing" a young artist's image. I didn't -- and don't -- know how much of that is coming from Jungkook himself and how much is direction that *this* is what he needs to do to differentiate himself from BTS and present himself as a pop star in his own right. Personally? I didn't feel like it suited him. Not because it was too sexy but because it was so..."Oh, *this* again." It just felt very...ordinary.
Writing this out made me realize that this is the dilemma facing an artist like Jungkook. How do you show that you're a grownup artist in your own right if people look at you and see "young" and "cute?" I can't answer that. I just feel like there *has* to be a more creative way to do that than just raunching things up.
I don't know what to say about "3D" because I can't get back in that 100% Muggle mindset anymore. I have more familiarity with who Jungkook is, so I know that's coloring my opinion. If anything, I now feel disappointed that this seems to be the direction his first solo venture is taking. If before it was, "Oh, *this* again," now it's more like..."I *know* there's more to him than *this*."
I'm not a Swiftie, but I really admire Taylor Swift's management of her image and career. I am absolutely certain that at some point, she was advised that she'd never cross over from teenage country sweetheart to megawatt popstar unless she presented a more "mature" image -- i.e., a more sexual one. She didn't buy into that. And look where she is now.
You wrote, "Do they see him as a "fuck boy", as a sexy and legitimate pop star, or as an typical bg member (ie. not a "serious artist", pandering to his "crazy" female audience)? Does this new image come across as somewhat immature and fake to them, the way it does for many of us Army who know him?"
My friend, it came across as immature and fake to me three months ago when I *didn't* know him! I saw something magical on that stage in 2019, even when I didn't know (or honestly, care) who any of them were. I don't want *any* of them to be merely a fuckboy or a sexy popstar or a "typical" member of a K-pop band. They have magic in them. They don't ever need to be ordinary.
Hi again!
Honestly, I've many complaints about Jungkook's GMA performance but it was technically only a sound check, and he had a cold, though I have complaints about Jungkook's performances in general lately.
I didn't think Jungkook came across as particularly mature, because, to me, the image he's projecting now is more comparable to Bieber or other basic white dudes. It's also very Western boy group. Jungkook is a better singer, dancer, nicer, hotte,r than pretty much every male artist, but, still, the MVs, the explicit lyrics, the choreos, his fits, his photoshoots, the collabs, etc. - the combination of all those things - paints a picture of him that is more Shawn Mendes-esque than Harry Styles, using an example of two singers with younger fanbases but with a very distinct image and reputation. What Jungkook wants is to be a Harry Styles, someone who successfully transitioned from being a bg member with a teen following (and all the limitations that comes with that, no offense to teens!), to a mostly respected artist with a mature, sexy (and progressive) image, not juvenile at all. Jungkook's image right now is pretty juvenile. It's hard to talk about Jungkook like this, but it's true. Jungkook is a smart, mature, kind, well rounded individual and artist, with the ability to approach complex topics with his music and to deliver interesting performances, but his artistic output right now does not do him justice, and tbh, he's always beeen partial to "sexy" and "powerful" performances, to his detriment - he wants to feel sexy and cool, and goes about it in the least interesting way possible with his solos (like the My Time performance, Seven, 3D).
There's nothing wrong with being a respectful basic white boy lmao (in spirit), or to be a boy group member, but what Jungkook wants is to be taken seriously, and neither of those archetypes are, nor are they seen as mature - hence Jungkook is unsuccessful in that regard. However, he is becoming a big pop star (in the conventional sense) and has more freedom now to discuss certain topics without the fans losing their shit (they still do, but mostly in a good way).
I want to ask, if Jungkook didn't impress you, and you already knew of BTS and had a positive impression of them yet that wasn't enough for you to become interested, how did you become Army?
Thanks for sharing!
To greet, or not to greet?
One of the biggest cultural shocks I had when coming to the US happened during freshman year orientation week. As me and my fellow classmates rustled into a Huntsman classroom, we took our seats and awaited the first speaker for the day. The speaker entered and a quiet hush fell over the room as eager ears listened for them to break the silence. All that was going through my mind was, "when are we were going to say good morning to him?".
In Jamaica, it has been drilled in our brains since Kindergarten that you must always greet your teachers and speakers with a polite "Good morning" or "Good afternoon" as a sign of respect. It was one of the many forms of common courtesy that was deeply ingrained in our culture. I began to wonder if this cultural norm was specific to my school or if it was a broader cultural difference between Jamaica and the United States.
Throughout the orientation week, I noticed that while some students did greet the speakers or professors one on one, it was far less common and seemed optional. Over time, I learned that the United States had its own set of social norms and expectations when it came to greetings. While Americans were generally friendly and approachable, they tended to prioritize informality and efficiency in their interactions. It wasn't that they were being disrespectful; it was just a different way of approaching social situations.
In class this week, I discovered that this was one of the many codes of behavior that exist.
When touching on Elijah Anderson's, Code of the Street, in class, I was brought back to another experience I had when visiting New York over Thanksgiving Break. My friend, a New York native had given me a very strict list of things not to do before going on the subway:
Don't stare at anyone
Don't smile at anyone
Don't make eye contact with anyone
Keep your personal belongings close
Don't sit in the stand-alone seat at the front of a subway carriage
Me, pictured, enchanted by the wonders of 5th Ave.
I remember thinking that this list of "Don'ts" sounded more like a guide to avoiding confrontation rather than simple subway etiquette.
As I navigated the bustling New York City subway system during my visit, I couldn't help but notice that people seemed to be in their own worlds. They were reading books, listening to music with headphones on, or simply lost in thought. The avoidance of eye contact and maintaining a certain level of personal space seemed to be a way of respecting each other's privacy in a crowded and often hectic environment.
It was clear that these unwritten rules, which my friend had emphasized, were part of a social code designed to maintain order and minimize potential conflicts. In a city as diverse and densely populated as New York, where millions of people from different backgrounds and cultures intersect daily, having such a code helped to not only keep social order, but also the subway system running smoothly.
This experience reinforced the idea that cultural norms and codes of behavior can vary widely not only between countries but also within different regions of the same country. Just as I had to adapt to the informal greetings, I also needed to learn the unspoken rules of the subway in New York City. It was a reminder that understanding and respecting these codes were essential for harmonious coexistence in a multicultural society.
As I continued my studies and interactions in the United States, I found myself continually learning and adapting to the subtleties of social norms and expectations in urban areas, recognizing that each community and environment may have its own unique code of conduct.
For the Drug Cartel AU, a continuation of this here. Chishiya, realizing that everything that the cartel built in Mar de Plata is crumbling right before his eyes goes to the one person who might know how to help. @thetiredassistant
Silence, then, ringing in his ears. Heartbeat thudding against his thumbs tightly wrapped around the leather texture of the steering wheel. It took him a second to realize that he was having a panic attack. He was sixteen again, dashing through the narrow, neon-illuminated back alleys of Tokyo with 10 kilos of cocaine stuffed in his backpack. Soma right beside him, with a similar wild look to his eyes and a similar burden to carry, strapped to his back. Shouts of their pursuers chasing ferociously not unlike rabid dogs, their voices bouncing off of the concrete walls. Heart begging to jump out of his chest, and in his ears — ringing. Just a-
Suddenly — loud, prolonged honk. Chishiya's eyes snapped open, the ringing ceased, pulse slowly dropping. The crimson red light turned bleak green some time ago and the person behind Shuntaro decided they were done waiting. Chishiya indicated turning left and pushed the gas pedal, glancing in the rear view mirror. White Volvo sedan. Fuck. Already? Has he not received their message? But they might not be the ones who left it. How many parties are tangled up in this mess? Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
Enough. The engine of his Corvette growled and screamed when he revved up and switched to 5th gear. 90. 120. 146. As soon as the driver of the Volvo caught on what was happening it turned out, that whatever was under the hood of this inconspicuously looking sedan had enough power to keep tailing Chishiya. The downtown of Mar de Plata flashed in the windows as if it was the last memory of a man taking his final breath, and perhaps it was. Shuntaro swooshed past cars waiting at the stop sign with a cascade of honks and passeby shouts. Av. Juan B. Justo was the longest street in the whole of Mar de Plata, soon, the towering skyscrapers scattered across the horizon changed into suburban homes with their tiled red roofs and local farm animals using the road as they pleased.
His jaw hurt from clenching, his knuckles white, beads of sweat running down the side of his forehead. 146. 170. 200. Is it still there? Quick glance towards the rear view mirror. About a meter behind his Corvette? White Volvo.
Enough. Unimaginable screeching as his foot slammed the break pedal and the sports car swayed towards left. Blink, rear view mirror. He watched the driver of the Volvo desperately trying to save his skin, black plume of smoke coming out from the front tires. Front wheel drive, as he predicted. The sedan started spinning around its own axis accompanied by desperate revvs of its engine, breaking through a fence and finally, when there was no more free space to spin, crushing with a loud, dull thud into awhite building.
El Corazòn a Dios, Los Manos el Trabajo — written on the side of the building in curvy elegant letters above the remains of the white sedan.
Complete stop, reverse, turning the steering wheel, 1st gear. The Volvo? Squashed as if hand of God himself was behind it. Car alarm and people shouting, a tired looking middle-aged man locking eyes with Shuntaro as he sped past the scene, heading straight back into the city, to find someone who could perhaps help him. For a price.
* * *
🎶Quiero verla en el show, es como un gato siamés🎶
Chishiya's fingers were very idly tapping to the rhythm of the rock song, his eyes peeled on the road ahead, mind calm enough to put the puzzle pieces together — and there were not many of those. He had the board before his eyes, the plague of insanity hanging above the black king. How many pieces out of the 32 were still there? How many moves until the checkmate? How many boards and players were there? Ringing in his ears, hand wrapping around the steering wheel to the point of his knuckles becoming white. Chishiya took a deep breath, trying to shake off the feeling as he made a right turn. He remembered his wedding day, she refused to wear a dress, he refused to wear a suit, the scent of black elder reaching his nostrills, her favourite flowers. Ringing ceased. Since Aguni's departure from Hatter, Chishiya took over some of his duties, torn between the flying machines and the fumes of the cocaine lab. He spent the last four years huddled in first-class flights between various cities of Southern American countries, ensuring that Hatter's cocaine empire does not rip at its seams. But, as always, everything has its price, and this time it was Chishiya's knowledge pertaining to Hatter's closest circle and matters within it.
🎶Si todo me sale bien...🎶
He absolutely despised not knowing, the uncertainity of having to deal with situations foreign to him. Although the case usually was that he had time to observe quietly from the shadows, gathering information so that to tweak the events in his favour. This time he had no opportunity to do so, he was thrown right into the chain of events that seemed enitrely too far gone to even attempt anything to prevent the chain from loosing its last link.
🎶...lo haré de nuevo, otra vez.🎶
El Lugar Secreto, said the inconspicuous wooden sign, bleached by the everpresent Sun and dryness. A quiet bookstore, like many others in the city but this one held El Sabeltodo's place of employement, or rather, self-employement. Chishiya parked his Corvette in a secluded alley behind the building and put a black tarp over it — a curteousy of El Sabeltodo's. VIP treatment, scoffed Chishiya mentally.
The deep-green shades in the windows were pulled down, giving a passerby an impression that perhaps the store was closed down, but Chishiya has been here enough times to know that this is simply how El Sabletodo prefers his shop to be. He opened the door and an old-timey chimey reached his ears. A welcome coolness caressing his skin. All of the 4 walls of the homely inside were lined with bookcases, nearby stood a sturdy wooden ladder with wheels leaned over one of the taller bookcases. Chishiya strutted towards the wooden counter, running his pointer finger over one of the nearby books neatly lined up on a low cupboard of sorts. He looked at his hand and rubbed his pointer and thumb together — no trace of dust. Disappointing. He anticipated the day he will pay El Sabletodo a visit and finds the place in a slight dissaray, alas, it was not today. He leaned on the counter and chimed the bell as the owner of the establishment was nowhere to be seen.
A radio playing in the background picqued his interest, the jazzy music suddenly stopping and an urgent electronic jingle coming in its place "...Noticia de hoy - fatal accidente automovilístico en la Av. Juan B. Justo. La policía sospecha que esto es el resultado de una carrera callejera ilegal."
Fuck.
More Ch 91 thoughts (spoiler)
More thoughts Ch 91
Lari: Don’t do that. I hope your highness will become a wise Emperor who is loved by the people. I believe your highness can become someone like that.
Rupert: That’s so ridiculous, I don’t even know where to start [Not “start” as in begin something, but “start” as in deny what she says because it’s impossible]
This is very subtle from the novel, that I didn’t realize until now, but I appreciate Lari’s line of thinking so much. This is the first hint of when she tells us she wishes that Rupert chooses peace when he becomes emperor, and we’ll see the continuation of this conversation in a few more chapters.
The criticism some fans have:
Lari tells Rupert that she wants him to become a wise Emperor, to choose peace, to not kill. Both her and Rupert fully know that the Empress’ faction - The Empress herself, Nigelle, Arnulf, Duke Arnbach; Duke Ventibolt’s faction, even the bigger nobles don’t want him in power and use methods including assassination attempts to get rid of him. Even knowing all this Lari tells him she doesn’t want him to kill them, and he actually listens.
Fans complain how stupid she is, how her brain is full of rainbows and sunshine, and she’s making life harder for Rupert because of “peace”.
BUT, THERE’S MORE TO IT. The details that were scattered in the novel, and manhwa too:
In previous chapters, It’s established that Lari cares a lot about Rupert now. She genuinely wishes for his happiness (Ch 75, Ch 82, Ch 84). Chapter 75, in their world, was Sept 287. It was “Early Summer” 288 in Ch 84 where she says “I’ll make sure you do (find happiness)). From even before he became Crown Prince to now, she has been thinking of ways for him to become happy. This is her answer: by knowing the “past”, she can change the “future”. In TL1, the rumors about him were nasty (recall the first few chapters). He was initially the “handsome prince that descended from the heavens”, but months after becoming Emperor he started his rampage. Arnulf was pitied by the people, as he had his position of Emperor ‘stolen’ by Rupert, who came out of nowhere, and ended up getting executed ‘for no reason’, after the Empress died in a ‘accidental fire’. He killed the Empress, Tory, with a shotgun meant for hunting game the night of their wedding. He killed a random Count’s entire family. He killed some military commanders. He executed Duke Ventibolt’s entire family, then moved his sights to execute Belois. The circulating rumors at the time was that Rupert was crazy for blood, had an insatiable need to kill, and just one look from him was enough to kill.
She’s not entirely sure what happened in TL1, but the Rupert she knows now is not the same. He’s kind, observant, and minds his own business. He won’t hurt others unless he was hurt first or needed to protect himself/his life (Ch 82). She also knows that there was a lot of warped information from TL1 - Just like how there’s been multiple assassination attempts from his enemies right now, in TL1 he chose to get rid of them first. That’s less of an eyesore for him, but the public’s reaction to it was that he was unnecessarily cruel and killed indiscriminately, even though he was silently targeted all these years. No one believed the fire that killed the Empress was accidental - it was obvious that the only one who would have benefitted from her death was Rupert. In TL1, she suspected he was alone and lonely and hated up until his death, with no one to grieve or mourn him.
Lari doesn’t want this Rupert to have the same fate. The solution that Lari came up to ensure Rupert’s happiness: Maybe, this time, he’ll feel fulfilled if the people loved him as their Emperor. He’ll have the support of the people who will advocate for him and choose him instead of his enemies. He’s already doing that with those under his jurisdiction at 5th Ave Marketplace - he controls the merchant guilds and they all appreciate what he does to make life easier for them.
When Rupert asks her what she means by “becoming a wise Emperor”, she tells him she knows it’s dangerous and annoying for him, but she wishes he spare his enemies. It’s easy to strike first and kill them before they kill him, but rumors will spread that he’s out for blood, and he’ll easily earn the resentment of the people and develop a negative reputation. This time, he has to build his forces quietly, have Louis help him behind the scenes, and corner his enemies to attack in the open so when he strikes back, it’ll appear as self defense. So if/when they DO die or are captured, it’s because they committed treason, but because he was out hunting for blood. She also requests that he take consideration and give fair and just punishments - he may have the authority to kill anyone he wants, but she wants him to take in consideration the person’s circumstances and give a bit of mercy - there’s fates worse than death. Again, she knows that it’s dangerous and a lot of work for him, but she really does think that he’ll be happier if he doesn’t kill everyone that annoys him and he has the support of the people.
What Lari fails to realize though, is that SHE is his source of happiness. It never struck her that SHE can bring him happiness. But still, she at least came up with this idea in his best interest. Rupert didn’t agree to this idea because he thought it would make him happy, instead, he agreed because Lari seemed convinced that if he had a good reputation with the people he’ll be happy, and once he’s happy SHE’LL be happy, so in the end, he easily agrees with this plan of hers.
During their one-year separation, where Lari told him to consider her dead and never think/dream of her again, Rupert was fully capable of reverting back to his initial choice of killing all his enemies, but he chose not to. No matter what,he still found traces of her everywhere. During her absence, he chose to continue her wish - he continued to accumulate power in the background as he avoided assassination attempts, waiting for the best time to strike back. He actively participated in the Council of Nobles meetings, establishing his authority as Emperor and making it known that no one should dare oppose him. He passed some policies that made life a bit easier for the people, and within months, his popularity as Emperor skyrocketed. Rumors spread that the Empress’ faction was targeting him, and the people supported Rupert, spreading negative rumors about her faction. When Arnulf and the queen were captured for their crimes, he gave fair but firm sentences that earned him more popularity.
Again, Rupert doesn’t find happiness in all this, it’s just his “role” as the Emperor. But what makes him happy, is that he’s creating a world that Lariette would be happy in, and THAT’s what makes him happy. To help her move on from her trauma from TL1, he’s proven over and over he doesn’t seek blood, the world they live in is now a little bit more fair and just, and there still is some beauty in the world. But above all - he will, and never hurt her, and he’ll replace her memories of TL1 with new memories from this life now. He acknowledged what she went through hurt her so much, but just like how she helped him move on and heal from his childhood trauma with his mother and Crazy Emperor, they too, will also move on towards THEIR future. It brings him infinite joy when she does choose to stay with him, accept and reciprocate his feelings as his Empress - but also, she chooses to study and become a High Court Judge to continue to support him. The High Court Judge is a position that has been vacant for decades, and is a position closely affiliated with the Empire’s religion/holy land/original laws that has as much power as the Emperor himself. It’s a position that can be used to oppose the Emperor, but Lari uses it to further strengthen Rupert’s power in order to make meaningful, positive changes to the corrupt Empire and set it right.
I’m old and this happened like the second week of 6th grade BUT
it was the first time I ever remember seeing the news cycle continue for a week straight, 24/7 - which like makes sense whatever - but with the rapid rebranding and resurgence of American nationalism that happened after that everything became saturated
My dad thought it was some big practical joke and woke me and my sister up (west coast so it was like 6am) and we realized it wasn’t when a guy reporting from the Pentagon was interrupted by an airplane crashing into the building
I went to college with a lot of people from the Tri-State area though - one remembers seeing the towers burning and falling from her school window; another was a student at the St. Thomas 5th Ave choir school - said that Manhattan smelled like ash and burning flesh for several days.
The big kicker though was a parishioner at the church where I played (am organist) was supposed to go to a meeting in one of the towers the morning of Tuesday 9/11/2001 and that morning he woke up with dreadful tooth pain and needed a root canal immediately - so instead, he watched as the building he was supposed to be in collapsed while sitting at the dentist
Guys, I need to know something (if you're american)
MODULE 4 PUBLIC ART
For this assignment, I chose this statue, which you can find on 5th Ave. I've walked by and questioned millions of times about its normality. The sculpture is a full-round portrayal of a masculinely clothed human person. He lacks distinguishable facial characteristics yet wears the standard short haircut and suit, indicating he works in business. The figure is more prominent than the usual person on the sidewalk, but it is intended to be in their presence. It appears a man stopped at a crosswalk, smelled what he had walked in, and became stuck. This sculpture was made by Jim Rennert before commencing his sculptural career; the artist worked in business for a decade. So, one approach to interpreting the message of this sculpture is to look at a typical but stressful event in the lives of those who work in business. Socially, the sculpture expresses the community's enthusiasm for persistence and a cheerful approach to everyday obstacles. Which means prioritizing, acknowledging, and addressing these shared experiences lightheartedly and empathetically. Aesthetically, the sculpture embodies the qualities of realism and relatability, creating an approachable work of art that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people. Jim Rennert created a series of sculptures called "Suits," which he later renamed "Everyman." His paintings highlight the problems we experience when we contemplate our options. They represent all of us. This sculpture, titled "It Happens," brings us together and makes practically everyone who views it happy. We have all been there. At some point, we have to scrape it off and go on.
