I was in History, and I donā€™t even know what my teacher was talking about but she had her back to us and asked, ā€œSo what did they make?ā€ And some kid said ā€œSatinā€ and she turned around with blood red eyes and said, ā€œWrong, the correct answer is Satan,ā€ and a fucking distorted demon shadow jumped out of her eyes and ate the guy, and then Satan turned around and said, ā€œDoritosā€.

what are your honest opinions on your pgce experience and your subsequent teaching life?? iā€™m considering applying for a pgce but am unsure/terrified haha
I'm not going to be particularly encouraging here, sorry! I would highly recommend talking to other teachers before making a decision because I can only offer my perspective...
To be blunt, I don't think it was the right choice for me long term. I actually handed my notice in during the summer term and I'm not teaching anymore. I learnt a lot while in school and I found it a real privilege to work with some of the kids I met. However, the overwhelming experience was miserable for me, particularly when I was working as a fully qualified teacher.
I don't want to put you off because for the right person teaching is a wonderful job and most of my PGCE cohort absolutely love their jobs. However, it's not easy and it wasn't the right fit for me. When I was teaching properly it was amazing. I had some wonderful students and I will always be fond of my year 13s and year 10s because I saw them grow so much during the year I was teaching them.
But most of teaching isn't like that. It's hard work, pupils are less disciplined and have more complex needs than ever before. Teachers also have much less authority and are not respected. I spent most of last year firefighting significant problems in my pupil's education than actually teaching history. I'm talking about teaching GCSE pupils how to read, not they're a bit behind. This was huge developmental problems where these kids were systematically failed and I was left to pick up the pieces along with my colleagues. I actually gave up my free time to help a group of year 11s to work on phonics.
On top of this I've never been so poorly treated. I was verbally abused by pupils and their parents regularly with very little support from the schools. I even had a pupil throw a chair at me just because I asked them to move seats. I spent the evening in A&E with a sprained wrist because of it and the school refused to do anything about it other than given that pupil a warning, I was still expected to teach that pupil! (This school was rated "Good" by Ofsted, it wasn't like I was in a particularly rough area. It's just so normalised for some reason?)
I did have a particularly unfortunate teaching experience, but it's not exactly uncommon either. There's a huge number of people who quit teaching within 5 years of qualifying - I also saw 9 of the 12 people on my PGCE drop out before graduating. It's a hard job, it can be incredibly rewarding but it's not the career it used to be when my Dad was teaching. Teachers are expected to be much more than teachers without the respect or compensation they deserve.

If there is something that I wish I could redo it would be my history class from this past school year. I spent way too long hating my teacher before realizing that she is literally an angel sent to earth and that I love her so much.
I didnā€™t like her teaching style at first, but then I realized it actually made me learn. I just wish I didnā€™t spend so much time hating her class, because I love history. I would talk to her about random history crap all the time.
She was also a big newsies fan, and she even let me leave after my midterm to go watch the middle school performance of Newsies. Every time we went over Yellow Journalism or anything that had to do with the press she would point at me and mention newsies. Sheā€™s just as weird as me, I love her and would die for her. Iā€™m actually really sad Iā€™ll never have her as a teacher again. T-T
I might take AP Psych just to have her as a teacher again.

Hello~ (I'm sending in an ask for the first time so sorry if there's any mistake in advance) Firstly, I recently discovered your blog and it's really so nice! I really love how you write and pay attention to the details! I've never seen someone present Kyojuro's character + the dynamics of the Rengoku family so accurately so thank you for your hardwork <3 also I just casually wanted to know your opinions? or just some head canons? about teacher Kyojuro~ (I really like to think about teacher Kyojuro he is so nice and gentle, he deserves to be loved and taken care of www) well thank you for reading and I hope you have a nice day !
Hi~ no worries, I don't think there's a wrong way to send an ask. Welcome to my blog and thanks for reading my stuff! Aww thank you, those are really kind compliments and you're welcome! I really love the Rengoku family and have a lot of fun writing about them.Ā
Kyojuro is so nice and gentle I agree and he definitely deserves to be loved and taken care of <3Ā
I'm not sure I have that many head canons about him. But I'll see what comes to mind.Ā
We know that everyone passes Kyojuro's classes/gets good grades in history which to me suggests he is good at understanding how people learn and what does and doesnā€™t work for themĀ
If a student is having a hard time with the material and tries to give up heā€™s not going to let them and will do study sessions to try and figure out what works best for them (and give them a motivational/inspirational talk)
Strict grader but is also gonna compliment and point out what students did well in their work
Would also do this during discussion, if a student raises their hand and gives a wrong answer Kyojuro will correct them in a kind way and will defend them from others laughingĀ
In the same vein I doubt bullies try to pull stuff in his class because not only will he call them out but heā€™d also pull a ā€œI donā€™t get it, please explainā€Ā
He will know fun and interesting details of history that not many people would know
He and Senjuro make props for the mock battles he puts on in his class if he isnā€™t just borrowing the familyā€™s practice swords
If he shares knowledge that Ruka taught him heā€™s gonna make sure his students know he learned it from her
Sanemi isnā€™t the one students have to worry about catching them if they get in a fight in the hall, itā€™s Kyojuro, heā€™ll pry them apart and hold them off the ground by their collars before they even know whatā€™s going on and seeing the kind happy history teacher give them a severe stare is gonna make them feel more guilt than having the shit beat out of them
Heā€™s also the first teacher whoā€™s gonna bail students out of trouble or come to their defense as long as their actions arenā€™t causing anyone physical harm
Invites Senjuro to come see him after school, will walk him home/take him home and then just come back to work to finish what he needs toĀ
If heā€™s involved in any gym/sport stuff at the school everyoneā€™s gonna want him on their team
Thanks for asking in and I hope you have a good day too!

I really can't like the men of our generation. I mean, I've already tried but they're just boring and for some people even selfish and haughty. For others, not mature and not cultured. Older men (35+) are intelligent, mature, cultured, will talk about interesting subjects, charismatic, romantic, sexy, gallant, down on earth and they have a certain experience in life. There are many more qualities, but they don't come to mind at the moment. in short just to say, older men > man of my generation.
