The first sitting and sources #1
The #Witness project, a rework of #history into the #story, took a different direction than anyone should think. It sounds easy to some, complicated to others. In the end, it is something else. It is fun. #historicalstory #study #sources #firstsitting
The Witness project, a rework of history into the story, took a different direction than anyone should think. It sounds easy to some, complicated to others. In the end, it is something else. It is fun. If the story is from the place, like in this case, from history, a source is needed. I need to study what should happen and then process it. It is a boring part of the work, but necessary. Lydia’s Story Continued (part 4) A true Story. 19th May 1817 - England had been suffering from poor harvests for at least two years, following the eruption 🌋 of the Tambora Volcano in the spring of 1816. Widespread hunger, malnutrition and increased mortality. Life was difficult for everyone. 1817 was also the year that Sophia Mayhew the elder (my 5th great-grandmother), was due to give birth to her 6th child. Her eldest, Sophia Mayhew the younger was illegitimate and the daughter of her lover, James Rager of Bedingfield. The young Sophia was not treated kindly by her step-father Zackariah Gooderham. This became clear on the morning of 19th May 1817. Sophia the elder had gone into labour, and the birth did not fare well. 🥀 A new baby girl was brought into the world as the mother slipped away from it. 😥 Sophia has died. 🥀 She was buried that same day, her child baptised alongside the funeral. 19th May 1817. Sophia the younger was afraid. Her mother had always been her protector, but now she was gone. She was 13 years old. Just a child. Suddenly she heard the new name given to the baby. To her shock, She was named Sophia. As if this child were her replacement. Two living siblings sharing a name was not common practice in Georgian England, usually one has to die. It meant only one thing, 13 year old Sophia was about to be sent away, cast out of her home in the pouring rain to fend for herself. She was a bastard, The prodigy of a dashing foolish young man, whom the NOW dead Sophia loved. Zackariah hated her for that. With just the clothes on her back and very little in coin. The door to her home closed forever. Young Sophia, #cold #afraid and unsure of the world that lay out before her - set forth on a journey south. She must find shelter, work, food - A new place to call home. Somehow, she will find the strength within. Somehow, she will find it. To be continued... #genealogy #truestory #historical #historicalstory #ancestry #genealogist #familyhistory #story #georgianengland #suffolk (at Great Leighs) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4j3NBFgRpp/?igshid=n046cne05qk2

For the last two weeks we have investigated what influences drove Mary Shelley to create the work she is best known by. For this week, Part III, we shall look at how the work potentially affected New England folklore, and seeing as this is the last Thursday Tales before Halloween, the macabre themes suitable for this season will be presented before you. The legend begins in New Hampshire in the last decades of the 18th century where our protagonist Thomas Benton was born in Coventry, New Hampshire. Perhaps alluding to the strength of the legend, Coventry is now named Benton. A gifted child, Benton developed a scientific mindset which saw him studying medicine in Heidelberg Germany, under a brilliant, but eccentric and shunned teacher named Stockmeyer. Becoming a mentor to the young Benton, Professor Stockmeyer shares the hidden aspect of his research, an elixir of life, which would eliminate death. In the first potential influence to the story of Frankenstein aligned with that of the folklore of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, Benton is himself very much alike to that of the young Victor Frankenstein, and his mentor and his pursuits, to that of the character of Dr. Waldman; and possible influence to Mary Shelley, Johann Konrad Dippel, (see last week's post: The Real Frankenstein's Part II). A real life alchemist in pursuit of an elixir of life. In 1779, Professor Stockmeyer died leaving Benton, who had become a protege of his teaching, all his medical notes, and scientific apparatus. Completing his medical study, Benton returned to the newly created country of the United States, after a period in London, and set up a medical practice in Boston. I’m a sucker for a Staffordshire dog. These are from our reproduction line, but we have antique ones as well. ***Did you know that they were the quintessential Victorian bourgeois status symbol? In the 1700s every mantle piece had a pair, and wives of sailors would put them in their window sill back to back if the husband was at home. If he was away at sea the dogs were placed facing each other to let any lovers know mama was ready for some bow chicka bow wow sexy time magic. 😍. #HISTORY!! . . #staffordshire #staffordshirehistory #staffordshiredogs #staffordshireporcelaindogs #antiquestaffordshiredogs #reproductionstaffordshiredogs #sailorswife #sexytime #sidefling #porcelaindecor #antiqueporcelain #antiqueporcelaincollector #antiqueporcelainhistory #historyofdecor #historyofdecorativearts #1700decor #mantlepiecedecor #statussymbol #statussymboldecor #interiordesign #interiordecorating #luxuryliving #luxurydecor #chinoiserie #sailorslife #historicalstories #roomtonic #marblehead #boston — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3lqUszo

17th October 1660, Nine signers of the death warrant of Charles I, who was executed in 1649, are executed. After the restoration of the monarchy in this year, and with Charles II on the throne, those who had been involved in the trial and execution of his father, including those who had already died; were hung, drawn and quartered, their bodies thrown into a pit, and their heads placed on spikes. The remains of Oliver Cromwell who had proclaimed himself Lord Protector under the English Commonwealth (1649 to 1660), and who had been dead for two years in 1660, were also dug up, hung drawn and quartered, and his head placed on a spike where it was displayed at Westminster in London. Cromwell’s head was still on display when the English poet Robert Herrrick passed away fourteen years later, Herrick was buried on the 15th October 1674. It is very possible that Herrrick saw the head, due to the fact that he lived in Westminster at the time, exactly the same area where the head was displayed. Perhaps it was the sight of the head that influenced the carpe diem poem he is best known for. To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time. ``Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying’. 25th August 1822, death of German-born British astronomer and composer William Herschel, brother of fellow astronomer Caroline Herschel. William Herschel is credited with the discovery of Uranus in 1781, (English astronomer John Flamsteed had observed the same planet in 1690, but thought it was a star). Herschel would further discover the moons of Uranus, Titania and Oberon, and the moons of Saturn Enceladus (on the 28th August 1789) and Mimas. As well as these discoveries, Herschel would also invent infrared radiation, and publish catalogues of nebulae. In 1778, William Herschel believing that life existed on other planets, wrote that he had observed lunar towns, which is especially ironic for the history that follows. 25th August 1835, the New York Sun newspaper publishes the sensational and startling discovery of people and animals living on the moon using "an immense telescope of an entirely new principle", by English polymath, mathematician, astronomer John Herschel, son of astronomer William Herschel. The reports describe a fantastic array of life on the moon including unicorns, beavers that walked on two legs, and bat like winged humanoids that had been named "Vespertilio-homo". The articles now known as the ‘Great Moon Hoax’, first published on this day were written by Richard Adams Locke in order to increase the New York Sun’s circulation. 26th August 1723, death of Dutch microscopist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, known as “the Father of Microbiology", for his foundation of the science, being the first to observe bacteria and protozoa in pond water.
