The end result is an audacious film, formally experimental and with an almost clinically detached point of view. Mainly shot on hidden cameras, it concentrates on the domestic life of the Höss family (Rudolf, his wife, Hedwig, and their five children), whose house stood just outside the perimeter of the concentration camp, the horror within suggested in glimpses of smoking chimneys but, more disturbingly, through an almost constant ambient soundscape of industrial noise and human shouts and cries. It is an unsettling film: a study in extreme cognitive dissonance. It stayed with me for weeks after I watched it, so much so that I attended another screening to try to decipher its uneasy merging of almost clinical observation and moments of abrupt and jarring experimentalism – the screen turns blood red at one point. On both occasions, it fulfilled Glazer’s aim “to make it a narrative that you, the viewer, complete, that you are involved in and ask questions of”. […]
[Glazer] first started thinking about The Zone of Interest when he read Martin Amis’s novel of the same name not long after its publication in 2014. Having secured the rights with his producer, Jim Wilson, the pair began what would become several years of intense and meticulous pre-production preparation. “Our reading actually took us away from the book and deep into Amis’s primary sources,” he says, “The more fragments of information we uncovered about Rudolf and Hedwig Höss in the Auschwitz archives, the more I realised that they were working-class people who were upwardly mobile. They aspired to become a bourgeois family in the way that many of us do today. That was what was so grotesque and striking about them – how familiar they were to us.”
[…] When he first visited Auschwitz, Glazer went to the Hösses’ house and, to his surprise, found it inhabited by a Polish family who had lived there since the end of the war. “I saw the remnants of the garden, and its proximity to the camp, and the wall, and it was chilling,” he says quietly. “Afterwards I entered the camp and looked at the wall from the other side, trying to imagine what the prisoners must have heard. There is no doubt that they would have heard happiness and gaiety as the Höss children laughed and splashed around in the pool. The film became about the proximity of the horror and the happiness, how one person’s paradise is another’s hell.”

The Perfect World
Batman is hit with a spell and falls into a coma. He's taken to the batcave where Zatanna projects his dream to look for clues to fix the situation.
It's the perfect, idyllic world.
Dick and his friends are on a blanket all over each other, Jason and his own group of friends right next to them doing the same, the two groups intertwining and mixing. Jason says something and Dick clocks him on the head with the cap of his water bottle.
Barbara, Cass and Steph are with the other sirens. Harley looks like she's never met the joker. Ivy's skin is tanned and healthy, her cheeks are flushed. No green in sight.
Tim and his friends are on a bench and some lawn chairs, talking and laughing. Kon and Bernard are all over Tim, teasing him. Tim is blushing and laughing, looking much healthier and happier than the real one.
Duke and his group of friends from the We Are Robin group gang are running around, pelting each other with water balloons, laughing and shouting. Duke slips, stands up with a muddy shirt and immediately rejoins the war.
Damian is with Jon and some of the younger apprentice heroes their age. He's carefree, obviously happy. Smiles and laughs easily, halfway into Jon's lap to show someone else his drawings.
Martha and Thomas are alive, graying, drinking tea with Alfred and Jim Gordon. Bruce talking with an uninjured Harvey Dent and they're in a closer grouping with Talia and Selina in a looser circle of every one of his children's parents and some of the capes in civilian clothes. They're all alive and well. Happy.
There are younger children running around closer to the adults.
There are blurry faces, some more than others, but it's mostly the dead and unfortunately indisposed and the children never born. Some are just faceless friends for his children to laugh and connect with.
Zatanna cuts the connection and the cave is silent.
Bruce doesn't remember his dream after he wakes up.
They never talk about what they saw. Never tell Bruce.

Happy Valentines Day Shana!! 💕💕 Sybok and Jim contiuation? I wanna see more of Sybok teasing the shit out of Spock for his oblivious crush
a continuation of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
It's rude to speak in a language not everyone present speaks, however Sybok became immune to social niceties around the time his father stopped bringing him to official functions. He switches to High Vulcan to say, "We can tell her I picked you up off an Orion slave ship."
Uhura's right eye twitches.
"She can understand you," Jimmy says. "She's a xenolinguist."
Bones's eyes narrow. He's so much more indignant in person than in the background of Jimmy's video calls. "What are you going on about now? I hate when you do this. I always feel like you're planning how to dispose of my body."
Jimmy had told him that Bones had started studying Vulcan. He'd also told him that he was incredibly bad at it, but not everyone can be Jimmy, which was realistically probably for the best.
He drops down to standard Vulcan to say, "Ah, so you have a talented tongue," since there's really no way to say that in High Vulcan that's a double entendre. It doesn't help that most of their potentially risque phrases are hand rather than mouth oriented, but he's learned to make do.
Spock turns an unhealthy shade of pale as his eyes widen the tiniest amount in abject horror.
Uhura raises her eyebrow in a way that reminds him of his brother. "To master a language is the study of a lifetime. I would be most appreciative if you were to give me a hand in achieving this endeavor."
Spock's skin flushes and he looks around like he's seriously considering running away from this conversation.
Sybok is delighted.
"Uhurua!" Jimmy shouts, hands on his hips. "Come on! I say that to you and you don't even let me buy you a drink, but you'll just proposition Sybok in the middle of the hallway?"
"She did what?" Bones hisses.
That is one possible interpretation of her words.
"I might have gotten around to propositioning you too," she says, "if you hadn't gotten your ass beat."
"Okay, I think I did okay, actually," Jimmy argues while Bones's face morphs into an expression eerily similar to Spock's.
He loves Earth.
#we haven't quite reached crush stage yet#spock admires jim on a theoretical level#and on a practical one finds him to be the most annoying person on several planets#OF COURSE this is sybok's best friend#spock does regret not being there to watch his father interact with jim for the first time#maybe his father even made a facial expression#prompt answers#prompts are closed#asks#anon#star trek

Mcspirk dynamic where Jim and Bones are like a normal human workplace couple. They've got their boundaries and needs figured out, but they're plainly dating and will kiss on the bridge if it's appropriate.
Jim and Spock are hyper romantic off duty and completely professional on shift. Like, "you completed that report for me, right, Mr Spock?" "Yessir" "good, I think that's the day" "I agree, sir." "You got plans, baby?" "I have the evening set aside you for, Jim"
And then Spock and Bones are a MESS. Bones had the boundaries talk way too early so he's got it in his head that Spock cannot love him, will not show affection, is unwilling to be acknowledged as a partner. And Spock is just quite good at giving what he gets and is perfectly happy to love Bones quietly. So Bones is like drunkenly explaining the situation to Scotty one night like "so they're in love, but Jim's fooling himself cos Vulcans dont love, but thats okay he doesn't seem to mind and Jim and I love each other so that's lovely, and I love Spock but HE'S not in love with ME cos Vulcans do it different. You know, different heart. We still get along and fuck a lot, you know" and Scotty's just there like... "Are you sure? I see how he looks at you"
Anyway all that's to say I'd love to see the blow up when Jim and Spock figure out what Bones is living with. Honestly I don't think it would be very cute, I think Jim would shout a bit, Bones would get very mean and personal w Spock and have to apologise, and poor Spock doesn't want to have to actually say the words. So he doesn't and it all carries on far longer than necessary
I can just imagine Bones storming out of whoever's quarters (funniest if they're his own tho) and going "I am being CULTURALLY RESPECTFUL stop acting like I'm a DUMBASS! He doesn't love anyone, it'd fry his mathematical little brain cells!" And Spock's just there like... "...fucking hell, doctor."

Hii can i request “It’s a brain freeze, you’re not dying, stop making a scene.” with steve for the fictober event pretty please
ty for requesting lovie!! — you and steve get too drunk at a halloween party and chief hopper comes to save you (tooth-rotting fluff, established relationship, tw for drinking and not being proofread, 1.7k)
fictober (㇏(•̀ᵥᵥ•́)ノ)
Steve opens the back door of Jim’s cop car for you, swaying in place and urging your drunken limps inside. “Thanks for picking us up, Chief,” you chirp, slurring slightly and smiling wide.
The old grump sends you a deadpanned look over his shoulder. He’s visibly tired, features blurred with exhaustion. His white t-shirt and pajama pants are still wrinkled with leftover sleep. The two of you are wearing two a.m. very definitely.
“Yeah, yeah. Just buckle up, alright?” he hums gruffly as Steve slides in beside you. “I’m just happy you two called me and didn’t try to drive yourself.”
He puts the car in drive and peels away from the curb. The bass pulsing from Tina’s house begins to fade. The man flinches dramatically when you lean forward to slap his shoulder.
“That’s ‘cause we’re responsible adults,” you quip, then turn to your right to look at your boyfriend. “Aren’t we, Stevie?”
The Stevie in question is on a different planet entirely. His hair is a wild chestnut halo on his head, the crown of it tilted to the headrest. The tendons of his neck are on display, as are the faint red lipstick stains you pressed onto his tanned skin. His adam’s apple bobs as he swallows.
Cheeks rosy and eyes fluttered shut, you can’t tell if he’s sleeping or not.
“Right, Stevie?” you repeat with a gentle shove to his arm.
His eyes open, red-rimmed and glassy. “Hm?”
“We’re responsible.”
“Oh. Yeah. Totally. Look at us,” he scoffs without a second thought.
The two of you flash a couple of drunk, lopsided grins at Jim, who peers at you from the rearview mirror. He grumbles something under his breath neither of you can make out.
You get distracted by the amber streetlights flitting by until looking out the window makes you queasy. When you look at Steve again, his eyes are shut and his chin is tilted towards his chest. You feel an obligation to keep him awake — like he’s concussed or something and not just piss drunk.
“You with me, Stevie?” you mutter, reaching for his face and holding his stubbly chin between your thumb and forefinger.
His heavy eyelids flutter slowly open. His dark eyes are honeyed. They flit like syrup across your features. A smile pulls at the right corner of his plush mouth. “You look so pretty right now, you know that?” he murmurs in inaudible slurs.
You hear him anyway, equally as drunk and speaking the same language even though Jim can’t understand a word.
“Just right now?” you tease. “As opposed to, like, every other moment in time?”
His bushy brows twist in offense — nose scrunching and lips pouting, like you’ve pained him by even joking about it. “No. You’re pretty all the time, just… A little extra like this.”
You don’t know what he means. You look like a total mess — hair wild, makeup smudged, drunk and fatigued and wearing it all over. But Steve looks at you like you’re beautiful anyway. Like you hung the fucking moon sitting full in the pitch black sky.
His brows raise and his eyes sparkle. “’S kinda makin’ my heart race a little bit, actually.”
You scoff and roll your eyes, turning him away from you and letting go of his chin. “That’s just the alcohol, Stevie.”
“No, it’s love—”
You giggle at his slurred singing, louder when he leans across the backseat to kiss you. His aim is horribly off, wet mouth smacking at the corner of your lips down towards your chin.
Hopper shouts at you anyway. “Hey! Uh-uh, no sucking face in my backseat— especially not in front of me, alright?” the man grouses, hands fidgeting on the steering wheel. “Spare me the emotional turmoil, will ya?”
You sneak a quiet peck to Steve’s pouted mouth when Jim’s not looking.
The boy grins with contentment a second later. “Mm,” he hums, tongue darting out to lick his bottom lip. “You taste like cherry.”
“It’s the punch. It tasted just like slurpees, I swear—” You’re about to start rambling, then cut yourself off with a dramatic gasp. “Hopper!”
“No,” the man montones from the front seat. It’s like he can read your mind.
“You don’t even know what I was gonna say!” you whine with a pout.
“I’m not stopping for slurpees, alright? I’m taking you kids home so you can sober up and get the hell out from under me. That’s it.”
There’s a brief moment of silence. For that fleeting second, Jim thinks he’s won. Then you and Steve inhale a deep breath and beg at the same time, “Pleaseeee!”
He sighs so deeply his chest deflates like a popped balloon. He readjusts his grip on the pleather steering wheel and grumbles like a storm cloud.
“Jim, please,” you beg, dramatic and terribly loud with it. The man flinches when you reach forward to grab his arm. He slows at a stoplight and turns back to look at you, bathed in neon red and sparkling with desperation. “I need slurpees to live.”
Jim blinks at you for a moment, then turns away when the light goes green again. He shakes his head and mumbles, “God, you’re so dramatic…”
You smile all giddy as you sit back because you know you’ve won.
“You’re lucky I need to get gas, anyway,” he tells you, just to make himself feel better, as he pulls into the nearest Seven-Eleven parking.
The intensity of the fluorescent lights makes you squint. The very distant headache you’ve been fighting off since midnight starts to creep back up again. Steve sees this — because there’s nothing about you he doesn’t notice — and swipes his sunglasses off his face to put them on you.
“Thanks, Zuko,” you joke as he pushes the plastic up the bridge of your nose.
Jim, seemingly less grumpy than moments before, unbuckles his seatbelt and looks at the two of you over his shoulder. “That’s what you guys are supposed to be?” he scoffs out a laugh as he fishes his wallet out of his pocket. “Those kids from Grease?”
“No,” you answer with a dramatic drawl. “I’m you. Duh.”
Hopper almost breaks his neck with the double take he gives you. He squints at your tropical-patterned shirt, unbuttoned at the chest and tucked into your jeans, and realizes you are him. He doesn’t know if he should be mad or honored.
“I was supposed to be Sandy, but then Steve ripped the costume,” you reason with a shrug.
Jim’s eyes narrow. “Was it too small?”
“Nope,” you answer in a monotone, popping the ‘p.’
His scruffy face twists like he’s tasted something sour. “You guys are disgusting.”
“It was a blessing in disguise, though. This is, like, a kajillion times more comfortable.”
Steve nods beside you, slow and sloppy and full of hubris. “This was a much better choice.”
“It’s super hot, right?”
“Total dilf material.”
Jim’s features scrunch. It’s like you two are speaking a different language. “What the hell does that mean?” he wonders aloud.
You and Steve share a look before snickering and getting out of the car.
He repeats, louder this time. “Hey. What does dilf mean? Hey! I’m talking to you—”
His only answer is the slam of the car door.
Like an annoyed father, Jim swears at the two of you under his breath while he pumps gas but eyes both of you attentively to make sure you get inside without busting your ass.
When he follows you to pay, he finds you acting like a couple of unsupervised toddlers. You lick flavored ice from your fingertips while Steve leans back with his face beneath the lever, pouring blue raspberry slush into his mouth.
“What the hell are you two doing?” Jim scolds from the entrance, brows pinched and mouth agape. Your eyes go wide, still licking syrup from your fingers. Steve, meanwhile, is still trying to swallow his melting mouthful. Hopper shakes his head. “There are cups right next to you.”
The man escorts the both of you out after he pays.
Steve holds one of your hands and swings it between your bodies. Your free hand is at your head, rubbing gently at your temples. The ache is distant and dull, like an ice pick has been shoved inside your skull.
“Ow…” you whine softly to yourself when getting into the car jostles the pain.
Jim watches you try and fail to buckle yourself in. He can’t tell if you’re still just drunk or if your headache’s making it harder for you. Maybe both. He reaches over to help you anyway.
“It’s just a brain freeze, you’re not dying,” the man grouses over your whining, clicking the latch into place. “Stop making a scene about it. You’re fine.”
He leans back from you and is about to shut the door. Then, with a flat face, he asks, “Are you okay?”
“My head hurts…” you murmur, slurring like a sick child desperate to be babied.
Hopper sighs. “You’re okay…”
He shuts the door with a gentle push. He gets into the driver’s seat and resumes the drive home in a relative quiet.
You and Steve lean against each other in the backseat. He hogs the slurpee you both agreed to share, but you don’t mind. You’re still fighting off a headache like you’re fighting off sleep.
“Did you have fun?” the boy asks you, resting his cheek against your hair. You can smell the blue raspberry on his breath.
“I always have fun,” you mumble.
“At Halloween parties?”
“No, dummy. With you.”
“Oh,” he hums with a crooked smile you can’t see. “Sweet.”
Jim’s smiling to himself before he means to, shaking his head at how goddamn in love the two of you are. It’s so sanguine, it makes him sick.
He slows when he pulls up to Steve’s house. The mansion is totally empty — not a car in the driveway or a single light on. No one’s here, because no one’s ever here.
“Alright, lovebirds. We’re here. Get out,” he announces, voice gruff with the sleep he wishes he was getting.
The car jerks softly when he puts it in park. When he looks over his shoulder, he finds you and Steve totally knocked out. Eyes shut, mouths open, lips stained purple from red and blue slurpees.
Jim huffs. “You gotta be kidding me…”
He feigns annoyance about the whole thing because he’s got a reputation to uphold. He’s the grumpy old man you come to for help — that’s his thing. So even in your sleep, he grumbles with a light-hearted irritation as he drives you back to the cabin. At least there he can keep an eye on you both.

Love on the Ice | Luke hughes
Luke hughes x reader
Winter had come to Ann Arbor, Michigan, blanketing the town in a soft layer of snow. The University of Michigan's ice rink was bustling with activity as families, friends, and students took advantage of the crisp, cold air and the perfectly maintained ice. Among the skaters were NHL prospect Luke Hughes and his girlfriend of two years, Y/N.
Luke, the youngest of the Hughes brothers and a standout defenseman for the Wolverines, had planned a special afternoon of ice skating with Y/N. Though she had seen him play countless times and even joined him for practice sessions, this was their first time skating together just for fun.
As they laced up their skates, Luke's older brothers, Jack and Quinn, along with their parents, Ellen and Jim, watched with amusement. Jack, a star forward for the New Jersey Devils, and Quinn, a talented defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks, had always teased Luke about his relationship with Y/N, but they adored her like a sister.
Nearby, several of Luke's college teammates were also gearing up for some fun on the ice. The camaraderie and playful banter added to the festive atmosphere.
"Ready to show me your moves?" Luke asked, his eyes twinkling with mischief as he extended a hand to Y/N.
She took his hand, her cheeks already flushed from the cold and excitement. "Only if you promise not to laugh when I fall," she replied with a grin.
"I would never," Luke said, his tone mock-serious. "But if you do fall, I promise to catch you."
With that, they stepped onto the ice, Y/N gripping Luke's hand tightly as they glided forward. The rink was alive with laughter and chatter, the sounds of blades carving through ice creating a symphony of winter joy.
Y/N wobbled a bit at first, her legs unsteady as she tried to find her balance. Luke skated effortlessly beside her, his strong hands steadying her whenever she faltered.
"You're doing great," he encouraged, his voice warm and reassuring.
"Easy for you to say," Y/N laughed, "You've been skating since you could walk."
"True," Luke admitted, "But you're a natural."
As they skated around the rink, Jack and Quinn couldn't resist joining in the fun. They zoomed past Luke and Y/N, their playful competitiveness on full display.
"Watch out, little brother," Jack called out, "Quinn and I might just steal your girl."
"Not a chance," Luke shot back, tightening his grip on Y/N's hand. "She's mine."
Y/N giggled at their banter, feeling grateful to be part of such a loving and supportive family.
At one point, Luke decided to show off a bit, skating backwards and pulling Y/N along with him. She squealed with delight, her eyes wide with both fear and excitement.
"Don't let me fall!" she warned.
"I won't," Luke promised, his eyes locked on hers.
But despite his best efforts, there came a moment when Y/N's skate caught an edge, sending her off balance. She gasped as she felt herself tipping forward, but true to his word, Luke was there. He caught her easily, his arms wrapping around her waist and pulling her close.
"Gotcha," he whispered, his breath warm against her ear.
Y/N looked up at him, her heart pounding. "I knew you'd catch me."
Their faces were inches apart, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to fade away. Luke leaned in, capturing her lips in a sweet, lingering kiss. The cheers and whistles from his brothers and teammates brought them back to reality, and they broke apart, laughing.
"Get a room, you two!" Quinn shouted, his voice teasing.
Luke grinned, keeping his arm around Y/N as they continued to skate. "Jealous, Quinn?"
As the afternoon wore on, the Hughes family and their friends shared in the joy of the season, their laughter and love filling the rink. They played games, raced each other, and even formed a makeshift hockey game, with Luke's teammates joining in.
Ellen and Jim watched with pride, their hearts full as they saw their sons and Y/N creating such happy memories together. It was moments like these that made all the sacrifices and hard work worth it.
As the sun began to set and the rink emptied out, Luke and Y/N found themselves alone on the ice. He pulled her close, their breaths visible in the cold air.
"Thank you for today," Y/N said softly, resting her head on his chest. "It was perfect."
"Anytime," Luke replied, kissing the top of her head. "I love you, Y/N."
"I love you too, Luke."
Hand in hand, they skated slowly around the rink, savoring the last moments of their perfect day. Under the twinkling lights and the watchful eyes of the Hughes family, they knew that no matter where life took them, they would always have each other and the love that grew stronger with every passing day.

but daddy, i hate you
when spencer recieves a birthday card from his estranged father you help him deal with his feelings
gets a little steamy at the end so 18+ recommended
this is how i deal w my own feelings lol
a little background: set in season 13-14. right before spencer’s birthday. you’re spencer’s wife, you’ve been together around 7 years. You work at the bookstore that you and spencer own. (he helps you run it and is co owner, you run it together) also, Spencer and you live in the apartment above the store.
It’s a beautiful Saturday morning and you’ve been going through boxes of new books for your store before you open for the day. It’s Spencer’s day off and he’s at the counter adding up the figures and making sure everything is in order for your busiest day of the week.
You hear a knock at the front door. “I’ll get it!” You yell to Spencer. You unlock the door and the mailman hands you your mail. “Thanks Jim, how’s Martha?” You ask him.
“She’s great, she’s dropping by later with cookies!”
“Cool! See you tomorrow!” You wave bye and start going through the mail.
“Hey, hon, there’s something for you from…” You stop when you read the name. William Reid. Spencer hadn’t seen nor heard from his father in almost 10 years. He was still very much angry about anything to do with his father. As were you. You couldn’t believe he hadn’t reached out at all.
“From who?” He asks, not looking up from the financial log. He puts his pencil down and reaches his hand out for you to hand him the envelope. You hesitate but hand it to him anyway.
You watch his face drop when he reads the name and address. Oh, how you wished to take the envelope out of his hands and hold him and tell him to forget that silly piece of paper forever. He peels the envelope open, careful not to touch the seal. He feels the dread fill his heart when he sees the contents. A card that says ‘Happy Birthday’ on the front, and ‘to a very special boy’ on the inside.
“What does he think I am? A fucking child?” He shouts, making you jump. “Sorry.” He apologizes and sighs.
“It’s alright, I’ll leave you alone with that.” You start to back away.
“No, don’t. Stay, please.” He begs with his beautiful eyes.
You nod and move closer. He begins reading the handwritten message on the inside of the card.
“Dear Spencer, Hope you’re not too upset with me, I am proud of you. We haven’t talked in a while, you haven’t called. You have the number. Don’t hesitate to reach out. How is Diana? Miss you. Happiest of Birthdays. Love, your father.” He reads it off, mocking every word.
“What the fuck! He hasn’t sent a card in 9 fucking years! Why now?” He raises his voice.
“I don’t..”
He cuts you off, “I’ll tell you why, because he’s either finally feeling bad about everything or he wants something. Well I won’t call him. I fucking hate him.”
“It’s a dick move to blame you for not reaching out, but honestly? Maybe you should, find out what he wants. If he honestly just wants to talk, it might be the closure you need. If he just wants something from you, you can tell him to fuck off. Obviously you don’t have to but maybe you should consider it. I know he was an asshole to you the last time, but you know I regretted not telling my father everything I wanted to say.” You’re watching your words, his father was a touchy subject.
He thinks for a minute and then sits back down and covers his face with his hands. “Maybe you’re right. You alright to open by yourself today? I think I’ll give him a call.”
“Yeah, go ahead. Good luck.”
He walks over to you and gives you a kiss and runs upstairs. He looked like a little kid who had just been given their favorite candy.
Later, when you’re closing the store for lunch break, you hear a loud crash from upstairs. You run upstairs, afraid Spencer had fallen and hurt himself. Worse. He was on the floor crying his eyes out. He had knocked the bookshelf over and he was surrounded by collapsed books.
You carefully step over the books to get to him.
“What happened?” You ask softly, so as to not startle him. He keeps crying into his hands but removes one to take your hand into his.
“I called, told him I received the card and I was willing to talk with him. I- I tried to…” His voice starts to trail off because he’s crying so hard he can’t speak. You rub his back reassuringly. “It’s ok, take your time.”
“I wanted to tell him, I’m married, and my life is going great. I didn’t even get to say anything. He stopped me and asked what card I was talking about. Turns out his new wife felt he should speak with his son, wrote the card and sent it to me. I should have known it wasn’t his handwriting.” He’s so tired from crying he just lays his head in your lap and stares.
“I’m so sorry love.” You say while running your fingers through his hair. Anger coursing through your veins.
“He hung up on me too.” His voice breaks as he says this. It has you fuming mad even more so. How could he do that? You could practically hear Spencer’s heart snapping in two.
He’s crushing your legs, so you convince him to stand up and have him go lay in bed with you. You cover him with the blankets and just hold him until he falls asleep.
You wake up a few hours later and he’s still asleep. You slyly grab his phone and write down William’s number. You take the paper, and your jacket downstairs.
You go to the store phone and as you’re dialing the number your stomach turns. Was this a good idea? After all I’m doing this for Spencer. You think as the line rings.
“Hello? Who is this?” A woman’s voice answers.
“Hello, is William Reid there?” Your voice quivers. You hear shuffling and the woman calls “Will! Phone!” in the background.
More shuffling. Then a man’s voice. “Who is this?” He says sternly.
“Hello, you don’t know me but I-“
“Then why are you calling me?”
“I’m your son’s wife, and I think we need to have a talk.”
“Spencer’s married?” He asks almost longingly. He sounded interested. Good.
“What kind of father are you? You don’t let him know you even want to be in his life and now all of a sudden you do? When he does finally reach out you hang up on him?”
“Ok that was because I went to go talk to my wife about why she sent my son a card from me.”
This goes on for a while, you yelling at Mr. Reid for his rude behavior.
The next morning you wake up to Spencer speaking to someone on the phone. Still groggy, you’re confused and mouth, ‘who is it?’
He holds up a finger to say hold on. He’s smiling. Maybe Prentiss is letting him take the next few days off!
“Alright bye! Love you!” He says into the phone, almost giddy. He hangs up and you tilt your head confused. He has the biggest grin on his adorable face.
“It was my dad. He was calling when I woke up. I can’t believe he reached out and he apologized! Can you believe it? He’s never really apologized to me before! We had a long talk, it was nice. Really nice.” He sits on the bed smiling.
“Is that so? Talk about a change of heart.” You smile to yourself knowing what you had done.
“You know what else he said?”
“What else did he say?”
“He said the little talking-to you gave him worked.” Spencer chuckles knowingly.
“I’m sorry, I should have told you.”
“No, I’m not upset. I actually am glad you did it. He wants to come and visit us. He wants to meet you too.” He pulls you into a big hug. “I love you. Thank you.” He kisses your neck.
“You’re welcome. I love you too.” You pull back and hold his face in your hand.
“Since you did me a favor, I think I owe you one. Lay back.” He gently spreads your legs apart and repays the favor to you. All day long.

When Street enters the locker room at the end of the day, Hondo, Deacon, Luca, Tan, and Chris sit on the bench and watch him. He furrows his brows and slows between steps as the door closes behind him.
“What’s up?” he asks.
“You tell us,” Hondo answers, leaning back on his hands. “You’ve been weird-“
“Weirder than usual,” Tan interjects.
“There’s something on your mind,” Deacon amends. “If you want to talk about it, we’re here to listen.”
Street sighs and glances down. His team knows him well, too well, he thinks. There is something he wants to talk to them about; he needs advice and help but isn’t quite sure how to ask about it.
“Do not say you’re breaking up,” Christ blurts out.
“Chris,” Deacon whispers, turning quickly toward her.
“He did the look! He only makes that face when he’s thinking about her and clearly whatever is bothering him is big!” she defends.
“It is about her,” Street admits. “But I’m not breaking up with her. The opposite, really.”
Deacon smiles as Hondo’s eyes widen.
“20 Squad’s resident playboy is proposing?” he asks incredulously.
Tan checks his phone to ensure it’s not April Fools’ Day, then shakes his head as he smiles. He’s happy for Street; they all are, but that doesn’t mean there will be a break in the banter they’ve grown used to.
“I’m sure you need a lot of help,” Tan says. “With… everything, right?”
“Yeah,” Street murmurs. “But maybe Deac is more suited to help with this kinda thing.”
“We’re all helping,” Luca announces as he stands. “But I think we’re going to need more hands.”
“Why?”
“Because we know you Street,” Deacon answers, smiling as he joins Hondo. “And you’re going to go big.”
“What is going on in here?” Hicks yells as he enters SWAT HQ. “You’re all supposed to be at home.”
“We’re busy!” Mumford calls over his shoulder before looking at the paper in his lap.
“Oh, well in that case,” Hicks mutters sarcastically. “What are you doing?”
“Planning a proposal,” Rocker answers with a smile.
“Whose?”
“Guess, Commander!” Luca interjects.
Hicks pinches the bridge of his nose but smiles as he asks, “Hondo?”
Hondo makes a sound between retching and crying, then shouts, “Mrs. Right ain’t knocked down my door yet, Commander.”
“Gentlemen!” Hicks calls again before the common area descends into even more chaos. “Who is proposing?”
“I am,” Street says, waving from beside Deacon. “We’re planning the whole night.”
Hicks stares at Street for several moments, then asks, “Can I help?”
“If you care at all about our sanity, you will,” Deacon replies. “He wants to propose but doesn’t know what kind of ring she’ll like.”
Hicks rolls his eyes as he takes a paper from Deacon. “You and I both know he does.”
“No, he doesn’t,” Street argues before immediately correcting, “I don’t.”
“What’s her favorite color?” Hicks asks, holding a pen above the short list of ideas Deacon jotted down.
“Uh, she likes blue.”
“Does she wear jewelry?” Mumford adds. “Rings?”
“Small ones, sometimes.”
“First shape you think of when you hear her name,” Rocker calls.
“Heart,” Street answers without hesitation. “Wait, what?”
“You’ve got your ring,” Deacon tells him. “Small blue heart.”
“Where would I even find something like that?”
“You’re right, Streeter,” Luca says, shaking his head with a frown. “Because Los Angeles has a shortage of specialty jewelry stores.”
“That was unnecessary,” Street responds. “But, sure, let’s say I get a ring like that. Then what?”
“Is he serious?” Hicks mumbles to Deacon.
Deacon smiles and matches his tone to explain, “He’s nervous.”
“Street, she’s going to say yes,” Chris assures him. “Figure out when and where you’re going to ask.”
“Right… How do I ask?”
“You’ll figure something out,” Tan says.
“Real helpful, thanks.”
“Hey, you said she likes reading,” Mumford begins. “Why not do something with that?”
“Yeah, you could hide the ring in a book or set up some romantic reading night-type date,” Rocker adds.
“She’d love that,” Street agrees. “Reading night would work.”
“Well then,” Hondo announces, pushing his hands on his knees as he stands. “Sounds like we have some shopping to do.”
The rest of 20- and 50-David squads stand, and Hicks asks, “That requires all of you?”
“You’re invited too,” Hondo says with a wink.
Hicks tilts his head to the side, then shrugs. “Why not?”
“Oh, uh, hello,” a woman squeaks after the bell over the door chimes. “What can I help you with today… sirs?”
“Excuse the crowd,” Hicks tells her.
“We have a very nervous young man here looking to propose,” Luca explains.
“I’m not very nervous,” Street argues.
Hondo nods behind him, and the jewelry store attendant presses her lips together to hide her smile.
“Are you looking for anything in particular?” she asks Street.
“Something small and blue,” he answers, glancing down at the case of rings between them. “Maybe with a heart?”
“I may have just the thing. One moment.”
She walks through a doorway, leaving the LAPD SWAT teams alone in the showroom.
“At least the place won’t get robbed,” Rocker murmurs as he leans over a watch display.
“Way to jinx us, pal,” Mumford grumbles from the other side of the room.
“Perhaps something like this?” the woman asks, opening a velvet box. “It’s a sterling silver band with a natural heart-cut topaz insert.”
Street hums as he watches the light glint off the shiny edges of the rock. “I like the shape and the color,” he says. “Do you have blue diamonds?”
“Lab-grown,” she replies with a nod.
“What if…”
“Go with your gut, Street,” Deacon encourages.
“Would it be possible to put a blue diamond heart in a ring, and then a small white diamond on either side?”
The woman sets the ring in a locked box beneath the counter and then clicks a few buttons on her computer. She turns the screen so Street – and the other officers – can see a blue diamond with white diamonds on either side. It’s a small ring, but it’s exactly what Street can imagine you wearing.
“We can then shape the blue diamond into a heart and use a sterling silver band,” she explains.
“I’ll take it,” Street responds.
“Perfect! Do you know her ring size?”
Street’s smile falls, and Hondo sighs.
“Guess we have to break into her house and steal a ring,” Luca muses.
“I’m in!” Rocker calls.
Two months later, Street has the ring box in his pocket and his backyard decorated like a reader's dream. There is a new swinging chair with plush cushions, accented by a book bouquet. He’s only waiting for you, and for his nerves to wear off.
“Street?” you call from the front door. “Where are you? I’m not playing Nerf hide and seek with you again, it’s not fair!”
“Backyard!” Street calls, forcing himself to keep his hands out of his pockets.
When you walk out, dressed in your favorite dress, Street forgets about his nervousness. You’re his future, his everything, and he wants to make you his wife. So, when you wrap your arms around him and don’t even notice all of the gifts, he buries his face in your shoulder and smiles.
“Are those books?” you ask suddenly.
“They are. And I know you can’t help yourself, so start reading,” Street replies.
You kiss his cheek, then hurry to the chair he constructed just for you. As you carefully extract a book from his special arrangement, you don’t notice him move to stand behind you or lower to one knee.
“How did you remember I wanted to read this?” you ask, opening the book to the first page. After you read a few lines, and Street still hasn’t answered, you turn with a smile.
Your book falls as your hands move to cover your mouth, and Street extends one hand from the ring box to catch it.
“I remembered that you wanted to read that book because I remember you. You have become my everything, you’re all I think about, all I want to come home to. I want to know you, to love you, for the rest of my life. Even though I know I’ll never be exactly like those guys in your books… mostly because I could take them in a fight-“ Street smiles as you laugh wetly, then continues, “I will do everything I can to be what you deserve, to show you the love that you are worth and I will be your other half, by your side, for as long as you’ll allow me. So, will you turn your back on the romance in those books and marry me?”
You nod quickly, dropping your hands toward Street’s shoulders as you answer, “Yes! Yes, Street, and not because you can take them in a fight but because the love you’ve given me has made me whole.”
Street smiles and pushes up, holding you close after you jump into his arms. After a moment, he pulls back slightly and slides the engagement ring onto your finger. You gasp at the sight of it, and Street knows that all the fun he and his SWAT brothers had planning this doesn’t hold a candle to the light and love in your eyes right now.
“Um, does turning my back on that romance mean I can’t read all the books?” you joke, blinking to clear your tears.
“Not without me,” he replies.
You take Street’s hand as you survey the rest of his perfectly planned night. A tea set and fresh bread wait on a plush picnic blanket, red and gray accents spread across the patio, and a distinct sense of how well your fiancé knows you.
“So, where is everyone?” you ask, proving how well you know him.
“Waiting down the street for my signal,” he answers. “They want to brag about how much work they did and that I couldn’t have done any of this by myself.”
“You could have,” you whisper before kissing Street. “But sound the signal and let me show off this ring.”
“We have a date night to finish first,” Street reminds you.
“You’re going to make them wait?”
Street leans close to whisper, “You’re my fiancée.”
You kiss Street once more, then lean against his side as you enjoy the evening he has planned and discuss the beauty of your romance story.
Bonus:
“What’s the signal?” you ask Street.
“Maybe it has to do with a rider without its dragon,” Street answers, running his finger over your cheekbone.
“A tragedy?”
“We had to have a plan in case you said no.”
“You didn’t. What is it?”
“Maggie chose a rabbit,” Street whispers.
You smile widely and take Street’s hand. “The signal can wait,” you murmur as you lean in.
Down the street, not at their planned waiting place, but in a restaurant a mile away, Hondo collects his winnings from the bet that Street would not use the signal. He splits the winnings with Deacon and Luca, and they walk away nearly as pleased with the night as you and Street.

"Okay, I think I've got everything I need." Adam said, hands on his hips, a plastic bag in front of him, for a change of clothes, a toothbrush, a few slim jims, and hair gel.
Lucifer stopped his panicked rambling as he ran around the house, to stare blankly at Adam.
"... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!"
Adam raised an eyebrow, "what? It's not a big deal."
Lucifer began to pull on his own hair, his pacing starting up again. "It's a big deal! It's the biggest deal! How are you so calm?! You're the one going into labor!"
Adam sighed, walking over to grab Lucifer's shoulders, spinning him around to look at him. Lucifer's eyes dropped onto Adam's stomach for a minute, expression softening, before the fear returned tenfold. "Adam-"
"It's going to be fine. Okay? I am literally six foot six. It'll be like popping out a grape. Yeah, the contractions hurt, but it's whatever. We don't know shit until we go to the hospital and get it over with." Adam said, speaking in a low tone, trying to get Lucifer to focus on his voice. Eventually, Lucifer nodded, but he still looked worried.
"... Okay, I'll go get the car."
Lucifer winced, looking down at how purple his hand had turned after the sheer amount of force Adam used when squeezing it.
"I'm sorry, hunny." Lucifer said apologetically, getting a glare from Adam. "Aren't you happy, though?"
"No!" Adam yelled. "That shit hurt like a motherfucker, and I had to do it fucking twice!"
Lucifer laughed nervously, glancing at the wrinkly twins on Adam's chest who happily slept through his shouting. At least they got Adam's ability to snore through an actual hurricane. "They're cute though, aren't they?"
Adam huffed, anger sizzling out as he looked down at his newborn sons. "Yeah, I guess they're pretty cool. What about Axl and Rose?"
"Nope," Lucifer said with a smile. "Penn and Teller?"
"Who?" Adam asked, face scrunched up as Lucifer mock gasped in horror. "How about... Uhh. Cain and Abel?"

“Hi, Emmie, we miss you!?”
“Mama H!” Emersyn cheers as the woman answers her FaceTime call.
“Is that Emmie?!”Jim’s face appears next to his wife’s, ginning widely at the girl he saw as his daughter. “Hey, superstar!”
“Hey, Papaw H! How are you guys?” She asked, looking off screen as a voice calls her name, “The blue one, Justin!”
“We’re good, honey! What with the call?” Jim asked the brunette as he smiled.
“Well, I wanted to let the two of you be the first to know that I’m coming to the lake house risk summer!”
A gasp leaves Ellen’s lips as a smile makes its way onto her face, “Are you serious?!”
“Yes! I feel like it’s been a long time coming, and besides, I miss everyone.” Emersyn pouts, “And with mom and dad going on their little getaway and Ryder busy with his own life, I need this.”
“I’ve been telling you that you need a break!” A male voice calls throughout the background just as a shirt lands on her head.
“Justin! Stop messing up my bedroom! Go home to your wife!”
“You said you would go get waffles with me!”
“Ugh! Fine! I’ll see you guys in a couple of days! Love ya’ll!”
“We love you, sweetheart!” Ellen blows the young woman a kiss before hanging up, “Oh, I’m so happy! Our girl is coming home for the summer!”
Jim smiles sweetly at his wife, his own excitement building up in his chest, “Maybe this is the summer where Quinn will get his head out of his ass and finally admit that he’s had feelings for her from the very first summer she stopped coming.”
June 10, 2022
The slick black car pulled into the driveway of the Hughes lake house, cars piled up outside from the amount of people staying there this summer.
Choosing to get her stuff from the trunk later, the brunette girl bounces up the stairs and knocks on the door.
The red wooden door opens up and Emersyn grins when she notices that Ellen is the one to open it.
“Emmie, my sweet girl!” Ellen pulls her into a tight hug, both women hugging each other for dear life, “Oh, I’ve missed you so much!”
“I missed you! You’re making me cry!” Emersyn can feel herself tear up as they pull away from each other, the brunette wiping her tears away.
“I heard our girls voice!” Jim’s booming voice filled the air as he comes around the corner, straight to the girl he had practically helped raise since she was eight. “Hi, honey.”
“Hi.”
“Come on, all the boys are out on the dock.” Jim leads the girl towards the back door as his wife follows along. “Hey, boys! Look what that cat dragged in!”
Everyone turns in the direction of Jim's voice, shouts of happiness leaving the lips of those who knew Emersyn on a personal level as they rushed to hug her, all of them talking over each other.
But two people stood off to the side, both with totally different emotions swirling around.
Jack stood with a dropped jaw, tears pooling as he it had been years since they had spent a summer with each other. Of course, the two talked on the daily and texted, checking up on each other. And Emersyn had been to a handful of his hockey games while Jack tried to go to as many concerts of hers as he could.
But they hadn’t actually spent a summer together since the summer that Quinn had embarrassed her after Luke spilled her secret about her crush on Quinn — one that was still so much present even though it had been years.
Quinn sat off to the side, his entire body frozen as he takes in the girl standing in front of him. The two hadn’t talked since that one summer. And every time Quinn tried to get Jack to give him the singers new number, his brother always refused.
If she wanted him to have it, then she would’ve given it to him.
“Holy, fu— is this real?” Jack asked from his place, watching as his best friend nodded her head.
“Hi, Jacky.”
And that’s all it took for the two best friends to rush towards each other, Jack picking the brunette up to hold her to him tightly, the middle Hughes boy swaying them slightly.
“Are you here for the summer?” He mumbles in her neck, only loud enough for her to hear.
“Yes. I decided that it—,”
“No. Let me help you get your stuff up to your room.” Jack cuts her off, placing a hand on the small of her back, pushing her towards the inside of the lake house.
It’s quiet as Jack watches Emersyn unpacking her stuff in the bedroom that was designated for her when she came to the Lake House for the summer, which for the last nine years had stayed empty.
“The entire summer?”
Emersyn laughs as she pushes the now empty suitcase under the bed, “I’m here the entire summer. Well, I do have to fly back to California in a couple of days just for a concert. I promised Justin I’d come sing Overboard with him.”
Jack nods as she comes to sit next to him on the bed, “How’s that crush on Quinn?”
Emersyn groans, throwing herself back as she uses the palms of her hands to cover her eyes, “You would think that after nine years, and one toxic ass relationship, that I wouldn’t have one anymore but it hasn’t gone away.”
“Might help if you stopped watching his games, or stopped looking over his Instagram, or let me set you up on a date with —,”
“I’m not going on a date with anybody for your team.” She cuts his off, “Dawson and Nico are great guys, but no.”
“Worth a shot.” He shrugged.
“I tried really hard to forget about my crush on Quinn, but it seems impossible. And I know that he doesn’t feel the same way, he made that pretty clear in 2013, but….,”
“You want him to return the feelings.” Jack smiles softly.
“Yeah.” Emersyn sighs, “God, that sounds so stupid.”
“Maybe one day he will. It’d be nice if you were my sister one day.” Jack smirks, nudging his foot with hers before the smirk drops, “I don’t know how I’d feel about it though.”
“What do you mean?” She sits up, eyebrows pinched together is confusion.
“Emmie, he broke your heart to the point that you haven’t been here is nine years. He let his friends laugh at you. He embarrassed you.” Jack shakes his head, “He’s by brother, and I love him, but your my sister and I love you just as much.”
“Jack! Stop hogging Emmie!” Trevor rushed into the bedroom, cutting off the conversation between the two best friends as he picks the singer up and throws her over his shoulder.
“Trevor!” Emersyn squealed, clutching tightly to his sides to make sure she wouldn’t slip from his grip. “Put me down!”
“I don’t think so, pop star.”
June 11, 2022
Emersyn had officially made it an entire day without talking to Quinn. Trevor and Jack had done a great job at keeping her as far away from her as possible.
But this morning as she was sitting on the porch, watching the sun rise, she had no luck seeing as she was the only one awake.
“Hey.” Quinn comes to sit in the empty seat next to her.
“Hi.” She doesn’t turn her head to look at him as he shoulders tense.
Quinn notices the way she rubs the palms of her hands on her bare thighs, a habit that she picked up on when she was nervous about something.
“How’s things in sunny California?” He asked, leaning back in his seat.
“Good. I finally moved out of Justin’s place.” Emersyn nods, “Which isn’t all too great ‘cause I live next door and he can just walk in whenever he feels like it.”
Having been a minor when she first moved to California, her parents staying in Michigan, she needed an adult to live with, and Justin offered to be her legal guardian until she was old enough.
And the brunette wanted to move out whenever Hailey had moved in with him, but both told her to stay, and she ended up doing that until about a months ago.
“Emmie.” The door slides open and Luke pops his head out with a pout, “Will you make me some of your pancakes?”
A giggle leaves her lips as she stands up, walking towards him, “Come on you big baby.”
Quinn watches the girl walk inside with his youngest brother, a sign leaving his lips as he throws his head back, “I am so fucked.”
June 14, 2022
“We need to talk.” Quinn shuts Jack’s bedroom door as the Devil’s player was trying to find a specific t-shirt that Emersyn had asked him to get so that she could throw it over her swim suit.
“Talk about what?” Jack doesn’t turn from his closet as he pushes clothes around.
“I’m in love with Emersyn.”
Jack freezes as the words come from his brother’s mouth, t-shirt clutches tightly in his fist before he shakes his head, “No.”
“No? What do you mean ‘no’?” Quinn looks at his brother in confusion as Jack turns to him.
“You think I’m going to let you love my best friend after what happened?” Jack asked, a dry chuckle leaving his lips. “Think again.”
“Jack—,”
“No. It has been nine years since I’ve spent an entire summer with Emmie because of you.” Jack tells him, “Hell, she didn’t even come to Luke’s first NHL game that she promised him she would come to because she didn’t want to face you.”
“I know! Jack, I was 13–,”
“I don’t give a damn if you were 31! Emmie has spent her entire life trying to please you, to make you see her as more than my best friend!” Jack’s voice grew louder as his grip on the t-shirt got tighter, knuckles turning white out of anger. “I’ll be damned if you hurt her all over again!”
“Jack—,”
“Tell her.”
“What? No!”
Jack’s jaw flexes as he clenches down on his teeth, “Either you tell her right now, or I do it.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Not fair? You what’s not fair?! Her being gone for nine years, not wanting to step foot into this lake house, because you hurt her and embarrassed her!” Jack’s voice carried throughout the house as he makes his way down the stairs, feet pounding loudly with each step that he took.
“Jack! Stop!”
“Emmie!” Jack calls out for the girl as he holds the t-shirt out to her.
“Oh, thank yo—,”
“Quinn is in love with you.”
Silence falls over the entire lake house, Emersyn's standing in shock as she holds the t-shirt in her hand.
"Jack." Quinn hisses, not able to tear his gaze away from the fallen expression on Emersyn's face. "Emmie."
"Stop." Her voice cracks as she holds a hand up, pushing the t-shirt into his chest as she walks by him and heads up the stairs.
"Seriously?" Quinn looks at his little brother before following after the brunette, "Emmie! Hey, Emersyn, talk to me!"
"What the hell just happened?" Trevor asked after closing his mouth after it fell open in shock.
“Emmie, will you please open the door?” Quinn calls out as he knocks on the bedroom door, forehead pressed against the wooden surface.
Silence fills the air as the brunette inside doesn’t say a word, throwing stuff into a suitcase as she texted Justin that she wanted to come back a day earlier for at least a couple of days to clear her head.
"Emersyn, please!" Quinn knocks once again before the doorknob is turning and the Canucks player pushed it open standing in the doorway, "What are you doing?"
"I have to go back to Cali to do a show. I don't have the time to talk." She replies as her phone dings, Justin texting her back with flight information for flight that was leaving in two hours.
"So, you're just gonna runaway again?"
Emersyn spun around, "I didn't runaway the first time! I was heartbroken, embarrassed! I took some time for myself because thirteen-year-old me was heartbroken!"
"Emmie--,"
"I seriously don't have the time for this." Emersyn says with a shake of her head, grabbing the now zipped suitcase and quickly walking out of the bedroom.
Quinn stands there for a moment before he's rushing after her, ignoring the looks from all of the hockey players spread out in his lake house living room. "I love you! Is that what you wanted to hear?! I'm in love with you!"
"I am not talking about this right this moment. I have a plane to catch."
"So that's it?"
Emersyn spins around to look at him once more as a tear falls from her eyes, "I waited nine years for you to say something, to heart you say that you loved me the way that I love you. Nine. I'm sure you can wait a couple of days before I'm ready to talk."
And with those last words, Emersyn walks out of the door, leaving Quinn standing there.

September 9, 2003
A two and half year old Julianna and Jack held each other hands and a four year old Quinn followed behind them and their grandmother led them into the hospital room.
Julianna perked up seeing her mother and let go of her twins hand making Jack pout. Julianna quickly hurried across the room room right to her mother, “Mama!” She grinned happily.
“Hello my little one.” Ellen tiredly smiled reaching her hand out to brush her daughter’s hair from her face and she smiled seeing her other two boys.
“Would you like to hold your baby brother?” Ellen asked her three kids, Julianna immediately perked up and nodded quickly making Jim and Ellen share a smile, Jim walked over to his daughter as he held his newest son in his hands, he told his daughter to sit in the chair next to the bed.
Jim bent down and gently put his newborn son in his daughter’s arms.
Julianna was too young to truly understand how her heart soften completely as she held her baby brother for the first time and how she just completely fell in love with him.
“What’s his name?” Quinn titled his head curiously as he looked at his new sibling.
“Luke.” Ellen and Jim proudly told their kids in unison.
“Lukey!” Julianna and Jack both quietly whispered shouted in unison.
“Lukey.” Quinn nodded his head in agreement.
“Hi Lukey, I’m Annie, your big sister.” Julianna cooed softly at her baby brother and smiled tearfully when his tiny little fingers wrapped around hers, “This is Jacky and Quinny, they’re our brothers.” Julianna softly spoke to her baby brother.
Quinn smiled softly and gently rubbed his fingers against the side of his new baby brothers head.
Jack just pouted not liking how this baby is stealing his twins attention from him.
“Cmon, Jacky.” Julianna smiled looking up sensing her twin upset and she patted the spot next to her in her chair as she is too big to take up the whole chair.
Jack perked up happily and quickly sat down to his twin sister cuddling happily into her side and looked down at the new baby.
Jim pulled the other chair right next to the one the twins and Luke were in for Quinn, Quinn smiled at his dad before hopping into the chair and leaning up with his siblings to look at their new baby brother.
Jim and Ellen shared a happy look at their four kids and they knew Luke was their last kid as Ellen was told she could not have anymore after Luke but they were content with their four.

baby baby | quinn hughes x reader

request: quinn being by your side when you have your baby
word count: 0.6k
“Where's Quinn?” you cried out for what seemed like the hundredth time to anyone who was listening. Of course when you went into labour Quinn was halfway across the country on a roadie.
“He’s coming sweetie, he’s coming” your mother tried to soothe you again but it proved to be of no use. You refused to have your first baby without your husband.
You cried out again, the pain and your wanting for Quinn starting to overwhelm you.
“She needs to calm down,” a nurse shouted, and you swore you were going to lose your mind.
However before you could say anything back, your hospital room door was swinging open and a restless looking Quinn bounded into the room panting. “Quinn!” you cried out, tears springing to your eyes as you catch sight of the love of your life. Quinn rushes over to you, replacing your moms hand with his own as he holds your hand tightly.
“I’m so sorry baby, I got here as fast as I could” he breathes out heavily, still out of breath from his journey of running around the hospital.
“You’re here now, it's okay” you gave him a soft smile that was quickly replaced with a wince as another contraction hit you. Quinn reached his free hand up and brushed your hair out of your face, when he tried to soothe you it worked, and you were finally able to calm down a little.
“It’s time to start pushing mama!” One of the nurses says trying to hype you up.
A few short hours later, it was just you and Quinn in your hospital room. He was sitting beside you on your bed, one hand strung around your shoulders as you both looked down at the sleeping baby in your arms.
“I’m so proud of you,” Quinn whispers as he kisses the top of your head, eyes never leaving his newborn. “She’s precious” he says again, as he traces one of his fingers along his baby's cheek.
“She looks like you” you murmur, “she’s beautiful Quinny” you smile softly down at your baby girl before redirecting your gaze to look at Quinn. You had never seen him look so at ease, the adoration in his eyes made you want to go through this whole painful process again. You’d do anything to make him look so peaceful and happy.
“I think she looks like her mama,” Quinn whispers back, removing his hand from your shoulder and bringing it back down to your waist. He placed his head on your shoulder, leaving a soft kiss on your hospital gown as he went.
You hummed in response, leaning your head on top of Quinns. Both of you so happy and content to hold and look at your precious baby.

Masterlist
It was hard to breathe. Steve's vision is blurry as he walks through the woods towards his car. He feels ridiculous-- absolutely ridiculous, walking through woods in a stupid sailor uniform after being caught doing the deed with the person he is dating by said person's father.
Walk of shame is an understatement.
But that isn't all that makes it all so ridiculous, so damn stupid. Steve knew he shouldn't have been eavesdropping on you two, it was a matter between you and Hopper, but he just couldn't help it– he was the topic of the argument after all.
He didn't know what to do when Hopper's voice got louder, when he started shouting. He wanted to barge in, to act as your shield.
"No, you listen", Hopper’s voice comes loud even through the door, "You are fucking grounded. You can live your stupid paranoid fantasy and stay safe and stuck in this cabin”
“Hop–”
"And that means no tv–", the man interrupts you and Steve hates how much this whole thing reminds him of his own dad.
"Dad–", he hears you whimper and it breaks his heart. Because you don't call Hopper ‘dad’, not yet anyway. You had once confided in the boy that the title felt too big. Too scary. You’d told him that Hopper didn’t mind. That he’d told you to take as long as you need, to say it if and when it feels right. But with the way he is shouting, it makes him wonder if gentle words like that could ever leave his mouth.
Boots shuffle on the other side of the door, "No radio or cassettes, no more phone, no more tv– ", Steve hears the clatter and something falling on the floor. "What else are you hiding from me, huh?”
"Nothing, Hopper–", his feet stomp once again, "Hopper, stop–"
"No more fucking dating", his voice booms, followed by the sound of something tearing up.
Your voice cracks when you exclaim, "NO!!--"
"And NO MORE FUCKING STEVE HARRINGTON", Steve can’t help but flinch a little at the large thump that follows. "D'YOU FUCKING UNDERSTAND?" He barely even heard the sniffle you let out. “Asked you a fucking question.”
This is it, Steve thinks, enough of this. He is stepping in, Hopper, respect and his dad be damned, he will not let the man shout at you like that and not do anything.
Just when Steve was about to swing open the door, he heard you speak up, "No."
"What'd you say?"
"I said, no."
"Why? You love that stupid idiot or something?"
The air is thick with tension, Hopper’s question lingers in it for a while. You don't say a word. Seconds pass and your voice finally comes out, all shaky and rough. “He’s my friend. He’s my only friend, Jim.”
Steve’s knuckles turn white around the door knob. He cant help the pit that starts forming in his stomach, the disappointment that settles in it.
Friend. Friend? That's it?
Sure, you both had just been dating only for two weeks but they were one of the best two weeks of his life and you don't feel the same?
His grip tightens. was Steve being irrational? Maybe. But he cant help that pit in his stomach to spread wider– not because you don't love him but because he realises that he does. The realisation hits him like a bag of bricks, sure to bruise.
He thinks back to the night at your old trailer, the night he realised he liked you. All those months spent sneaking in just to see your face and your smile, tell you stupid jokes, hear your laugh, and to just be around you— it meant nothing to you?
And now, he loves you. He loves you and you don't.
"Cut the bullshit, y/n", he hears Hopper mutter from the other side.
his jaw tightens, molars grinding. Steve felt like history was repeating itself but this time he won't let it kick him down. He won't let it happen.
He won't let it happen to him again— he couldn't. So he puts his shirt back on, blinks back the moisture in his eyes and leaves the cabin.
Now, walking to his car, he dared not to look back where he had just left, he wished to not even think of what had just happened. This was stupid, he was stupid. And as he drives through Hawkins towards starcourt mall, all he could think of was how much he felt about you and how much you didn't.
Hopper was right, this was all just a bunch of bullshit.
Bullshit. He laughs to himself at it without finding any humour in it. its funny how much that one word has ruined things in his life. The two syllables, a running motif in his life that he just can't seem to escape.
When Steve walks into work, Robin Buckley notices the air around him is thick and stale, his shoulders slumped. He was missing his scoops ahoy hat, his hair in disarray which is an uncommon occurrence considering he always had it styled as it is his self proclaimed best feature. His eyes have a glazed look to them, Robin notices– not that she was going to investigate as to why. she doesn't care about him, they aren't friends, they are far from it.
Something else she notices, Steve was trying to hit on every girl that came to the counter. So much so that the girl had conjured up a tally scoreboard– five lines marked below the 'you suck' and zero below the 'you rule'.
Robin listens to Steve trying to flirt with another girl and doing so badly. She fights back a snicker as the curly haired girl rejects the boy. As the girl and her friend walk away giggling, she hears, ".... It's my first day here...", Steve's voice trails off before letting out a heavy sigh, his head hanging low.
"And another one bites the dust!" Robin announces, sliding the whiteboard so Steve could see it– marking another tally under the 'you suck' title. "You are O for six, Popeye"
He crosses his arms, turning around, "Yeah, I can count"
"You know that means you suck."
"Yep, I can read too."
"Since when?", She retorts quizzically, putting the board back where it had been before continuing, "Why exactly are you suddenly trying to flirt with every girl in Hawkins?"
His brows knit together before he looks away, shaking his head a little, "I'm not trying to... flirt with anyone”
"Yeah, you are. I thought you were already spoken for"
"I have no clue what you're talking about"
she squints her eyes, "Oh, really? what about--"
“I don't even want to talk to you right now”, he interrupts her, turning around, his eyes not meeting hers.
“Not too keen about it either”, she is quick to say it-- they arent friends after all. "i mean– Y'know", she rests her crossed arms on the counter, "it's a crazy idea but have you ever considered telling them the truth?" she shrugs towards where the two girls had just been.
"Oh, that I'm so stupid that I couldn't even get into tech and now my douchebag dad's trying to teach me a lesson? That I make three bucks an hour and that I– that I have no future?", That the one person I love never seems to love me back? "That truth?"
“Wow Harrington. A joy to be around, aren't you?”, she shakes her head, trying to rid her head of thoughts and questions about Steve Harrington's love life. “And where’s your hat? You’re supposed to have it on at all times, y’know, company policy”
“I– um, I forgot it at home”
“‘Course you did”, Robin sighs. Before she could say anything else, Robin's eyes land on a group of girls walking towards the ice cream store, "Hey, twelve o' clock", she tells him, gesturing towards the group.
Steve let out a breath, he goes to fix his hair, quirking a brow towards Robin as if to ask if he looked good.
“And he says he isnt flirting”
“I’m just trying to look presentable”, he defends, running his fingers through his hair one last time.
"oh my god you're a whole new man", she says all dry and sarcastic.
"I know right ooh–", the brown eyed boy shimmies his shoulders then quickly turns towards the counter, "ahoy there, ladies! Didn't see you there! Would you like to set sail on this ocean of flavour with me? I'll be your captain….", The sailor uniform clad boy announces rather loudly, "I'm Steve Harrington."
The group of girls look at the boy with wide eyes, holding in their giggles. Steve is still babbling about the many flavours they offered, his gaze flitting from one girl to another. Robin grimaces and turns to put another tally under 'you suck'.
…
There is a knock on your bedroom door, followed by a voice. "(Y/n)?", Jim calls out from the other side.
Your door is locked. Still hiding under your blankets, you'd spent the entire night tossing and turning, barely getting any sleep. Your back hurt from lying in the same position for so long, your eyelids droopy. And Hopper knocking on your door every ten minutes ever since he woke up wasn't helping.
"(Y/n)?", The man hollers again, "just... open the door, okay– I have breakfast", He is greeted with silence, once again.
"Listen," he sighs, "I just want to talk...", he pauses and after it was indicative that he wasn't getting a response, he bangs his balled-up fist against the door.
"Go away", he finally hears your voice out loud. You did not want to see him, you couldn't. Yesterday's fight still fresh in your mind, you couldn't bear to look at him or the things he'd broken during said fight. the aftermath of his lash-out lied shoved in a lonesome corner of your cramped room. You wanted him to leave you alone, to go to work like he always does so you could call Steve and maybe apologise for all that Hopper might've said to the boy. so that things could go back to the way they were.
There is silence and for a minute you think he actually listened to you. But then the muffled sound of his sigh reaches your ears. "Hey, I know that…", he breaths in, "yesterday– I might have said too much… and I– I just wanna talk it out and maybe–"
Suddenly, the door flies open and he is met with your face. Your red rimmed eyes filled with anger, nostrils flared and hair a mess. "I told you to go away. So, just leave me alone", you say through gritted teeth, voice cold before slamming the door on Jim's face.
"HEY, don't you fucking slam doors!", His palm went for the knob, locked. "Open this door, (y/n)."
"No", he barely hears you over the blood rushing in his ears.
"Where the hell have you gotten this attitude from lately, huh? From your little friend? You think you're being real cool? being a rebel?"
"Oh, you think you're being real father-like?"
it only makes him angrier, he clenches his jaw, "(Y/n)... open this door", he says it almost like a warning.
"No."
"Fine!", he throws his hands up before holding up a angry finger at the door like an angry father does, "Just know that I tried to have an adult and mature conversation with you, but since you're such a reckless, immature child, I'll let you fucking be!", He turns away from the door, stomping his feet rather purposely.
The door swings open behind him. he turns around and you're there all furious and mad.
"Ah, look who it is!", The man exclaims, sarcasm evident in his tone, "Finally gracing us peasants!"
"You're the one who broke all my stuff and acted like a man-child", You hiss, pointing an accusatory finger towards the man, "And I'm the reckless and immature one?"
"Not only are you that but you're also stupid and irresponsible– breaking a rule, with that jackass Steve Harrington, no less!
“Don't say that about him, he’s my–”
“Your friend? Yeah, I heard that, I saw it all too. I'm sure you guys are great friends!" Jim speaks with mockery in his words, "D'you kiss and fornicate with all your friends?"
With a scowl he continues, “you are immature and irresponsible, sneaking him in past my alarms like that–"
“They’re shit anyway!” you shout to interrupt him but he keeps talking, voice only getting louder.
"Not only did you put yourself in danger but El as well."
"How the hell did that put us in danger? you know Steve he–"
"Don't you talk back to me!” there's that tone again, the one that makes you scared, “you put us all at risk for this stupid boy. So yeah, you are irresponsible"
"God, why do you hate me so much??", You blurt out– its frustrated, tired and angry. You don't realise what you'd said until it was already out. Tears line your red eyes, and you look so tired, you want to go back to sleep.
all his irritation and rage are gone, his face falls, "What–", Hopper starts but gets interrupted by a familiar voice.
"(Y/n)? Hopper? What's happening?", El, who had been presumably waiting for Mike outside inquires with furrowed brows as she comes back in, concern etched into her features.
Both you and hooper say that it was, "nothing". You turn your face away so the girl couldn't see your distraught state and unfallen tears, trying to discreetly wipe them away. Jim rubs his palms over his face to collect himself, himself also not meeting the young girl's eyes.
She looks between the two of you before moving towards the phone, “is everything okay?” Hopper asks after clearing his throat. you glare at him.
“Yes.” she answers. You and Hopper stand silently as she asks for Mike on the phone. She then goes to her room to continue the conversation with the boy.
He clears his throat once again, and when you catch him looking at you, you cast him a glare full of indignation that makes him avert his gaze away. "I'm– I should get going...", Jim mumbles more to himself before taking his hat, wallet and keys and then heading out while you turn to usher yourself into your room, wallowing in self pity, once again.
Your room was dark, none of the lights on and somehow it was colder in there. Within moments you hid yourself under the blankets, ignoring the ever-present headache you'd had for a few days now.
1980.
You got detention, again.
You are used to it at this point. It is the same old– you wouldn't know how to react in a social situation, a classmate would make fun of you, and you'd get mad. Anger would boil in your blood as you would walk up to the person and punch them square in the face. Their parents would complain, you'd get detention and then a lecture in the principal's office with Hopper. The same old.
This time it is Tony Reed who was graced with a split lip and a bruised cheek. The blonde boy had decided it was very cool and funny to trip you in the lunch cafeteria and then proceed to spill his chocolate milk over you, calling you something that you didn't know the meaning of but assumed it was bad considering how his group was laughing and sneering. Your limbs had worked faster than your brain and here you are sitting outside the principal's office, picking your nails and waiting for Hopper to come out.
It has been almost close to a year since you escaped the lab. Almost a year of hiding. Almost a year of running. Almost a year of trying to fit in and failing ever so graciously at it. Almost a year since you'd met Jim Hopper.
Seldom do you two talk now, the man is always busy with his work. You also had your own job, school and the overall goal to not be caught by the lab again. The man doesn't know about your past. He is unaware of all of the secrets the small town of Hawkins holds, so does everyone else.
The creak of the door alerts you that it is Hopper coming out of the office. He picks up the hat he'd placed on the seat next to you, a silent gesture to tell you that he is ready to leave. You follow him out the doors, quick steps catching up to him. You sit in his car, slamming the doors behind you.
There is a silence, your gaze fixed on hands resting in your lap. Jim reaches for the cigarette pack in his pocket, he lights it up, blowing out a puff of smoke– making the car smell like strong tobacco.
He lets out a long, heavy sigh, "(y/n), we've talked about this", he continues once he notices you aren't going to interrupt him, "you can't keep doing this. This is the second time this month"
"(Y/n)", he says tenderly when you don't answer, "Hey... look at me when I'm talking to you" You look up from your lap, gaze connecting with his. "You cant keep doing this. If someone says something, we've discussed how to deal with it– you talk to your friends, teachers, or me"
"I don't have friends, teachers don't believe, and you are busy….. always", when Hopper doesn't say anything you continue, "I have not seen you since the last time I got in trouble. you are never there at the PTAs or–"
"Yeah, that's because I am not your damn parent, (y/n)", Jim interrupts you.
Your gaze is back to your hands in your lap, picking at the skin near the nails. The man beside you lets out a soft sigh, rubbing his temple. "Hey, hey", he whispers, "How about you promise and try not to kill another kid, I'll get you a new shirt and treat you with some Benny's, hmm? How's that sound?"
…
You heard a knock at your door, a softer and quieter one as compared to Hopper's, "(Y/n)? Can I come in?" El asks.
"Yeah, sure". The door opens, the hinges creaking slightly– light pooling into the dark room. Eleven lets herself in, sitting by the foot of your bed.
"What happened with Hopper?"
"You heard it all didn't you?" The girl nods. "I'm sorry…" that I shouted? That he shouted? That you heard it?
"So, Hopper knows about Steve?" Eleven inquires.
"Yeah, he does", you sigh before asking, "Hopper's gone right?"
You sister nods. You get up from your place, feet padding towards the phone hung by the kitchen wall– dialing up Steve's house number. When the line goes to the voicemail, you opt to try for his workplace number. You were greeted with the raspy voice of a girl.
You immediately hang up. El looks at you quizzically, “it wasn't him" Its always Steve who picks up the phone. Normally, at this time, Steve would always be there to pick up your calls. And Steve never ignores your calls.
You let out a forlorn sigh, putting the phone back on the receiver. Eleven standing by your side ready with a bowl of cereal for you and herself. You thank the girl before going to take a seat on the couch– she follows you closely then sits beside you. The girl twiddles her thumbs, clearly wishing to say something, "I wanted to ask you something", she speaks up after a while of eating silently.
"Yeah?"
"Mike... is being strange.. he is lying, I think" The girl explains to you all the details of everything that occurred between her and Mike. The way the girl explained everything, it seemed like your sister was asking for advice but considering you know jack shit about relationships, you were stumped.
After you both were done breakfast, she suddenly grabs your wrist and pulls you off the couch only stopping for you to put on your shoes and then pulling you through the door.
"El, what– where are you going?"
"To get advice."
"From who?"
Eleven tells you she was taking you to Max's home. You aren't sure that roaming in the neighbourhood was a good idea yet you let her lead you. The houses almost all look the same, surrounded by well mowed lawns and next to no one. Except for one person with bright red hair. Max is practising skateboarding and in the process the board slips from under her feet, rolling towards you and your sister.
The short haired girl beside you stops the board with her feet, picks it up and walks towards the redhead.
"Hi", Eleven greets.
"...Hi?" Max echoes in confusion, glancing between you and Eleven. You gave a wave of your hand towards the girl.
"Can we... talk?"
....
"... And then he said, he missed me", your sister explains to Max who is pacing around her room, furrows of lines on her forehead. You are leaning against the wall by the door, eyes following the redhead's movement. "And then he just... hung up"
"He's a piece of shit", Max says matter-of-factly.
“That seems... harsh?” you speak up a little unsure.
“Are you seriously defending Mike right now?” Max looks at you pointedly.
“You know what? You’re right", you hold your hands up in surrender, "my bad.”
"What?" El says, looking between you two and suddenly it makes you feel bad about shitting on her boyfriend so openly.
"El think about it", Max says, now stopping infront of the girl to get her full attention, "Mike doesn't have jack shit to do today– his Nana obviously isn't sick. I guarantee you, him and Lucas are playing Atari right now."
"But friends don't lie", El states naively.
"Yeah, but boyfriends lie." She said it like it was the obvious thing, "All. The. Time."
Huh.
"What do I do?" Eleven queries.
"Listen, you're going to stop calling him– you're going to ignore his calls. As far as you're concerned, he doesn't exist"
"Doesn't exist?" Both you and El say at the same time, words pour out of your mouth before you even realise-- clearly more invested in Max's advice that you might have wanted. Max and El look at you, you clear your throat awkwardly before murmuring a little "sorry".
"Yeah," Max turns back to face El, "he treated you like garbage! You're gonna treat him like garbage– give him a taste of his own medicine"
"Give him the... medicine", El repeats the phrase a little wrong yet Max doesn't correct her and instead hums in acknowledgement.
"And if he doesn't fix this and explain himself– dump his ass", both your and your sister's eyes widened.
"C'mon", Max said, pulling Eleven off of the bed.
"Where are we going exactly?" You spoke up.
“We? You're coming too?” Max asks, the question directed towards El more so than you.
“Yes, (y/n) is coming”, she answers immediately, nodding.
"Okay we are going to have some fun, there's more to life than stupid boys, y'know."
....
You aren't sure why you are here. In a crowded bus— way too many strangers, you think– headed towards the talk of the town, the starcourt mall. You know you are breaking a rule, but you keep reminding yourself that you are there to take care of El.
When the three of you step out of the bus you are hit across the face with the fact that there are even more people. Way too many strangers. The short haired girl beside you says, almost as if voicing your concerns, "too many people… against the rules."
"Seriously? You have superpowers! What's the worst that could happen?"
…
It has been almost a month since you punched Tony Reed.
You haven't seen Hopper ever since that lunch at Benny's. Despite him having promised you to meet you more as long as you avoided fights. That was the verdict.
So far, you'd still managed to stay out of it for a month despite the bullying and sneers having increased tenfold.
It is a Wednesday morning in the middle of July, it had rained the previous night so the air is immensely humid– you are sweating your ass off. There are sweat spots on your gym t-shirt. Your shoes slip on the wet grass, you fall with a thud against the ground. A boisterous echo of laughs sounds behind you and as you turn, you see Tony Reed, with his group of friends which included Tommy Hagan, Carol Perkins, and many more who you haven't bothered to memorise the name of— Hawkins was full of bullies.
"Hey, you okay?"
You turn around and are met with a mop of frizzy black hair and an extended hand to help you up.
"Yeah. Fine", you mutter under your breath, not taking his helping hand.
"Hey, Munson!! That your co-freak?" Tommy shouts from across the field.
"Match made in hell!!", Tony added, and the rest of the group bursts out into an obnoxious fit of laughter. Before you know it, your hands that were just hanging by your side curl up into fists and almost involuntarily, you start walking forward towards the group of bullies.
Ever since that last fight, they have been on your ass. from spilling stuff on you to locking you in empty classrooms so you miss classes. the entire group reminds you of your brothers and sisters back at the lab. Your Papa-- Martin. Martin would make them fight you, despite knowing full well you'd lose. the lab infirmary had always been your second room more so than the rainbow room.
There is a fight. somehow, you aren't sure how though, Eddie gets involved as well.
By the time some teacher stopped it, you had bruised knuckles and a split lip, Eddie had one too and a bruise spread across his cheek. Tony had a black eye and a broken elbow. Maybe you and Eddie made a good team.
You are then called to the principal's office and are ordered to call Hopper once. The threat of being suspended from school hanging in front of you like a sword.
You call Hopper. He doesn't pick up. You call the station. Flo, the lady at the desk, tells you that he was busy but that she would convey the message as soon as she could.
You wait five hours. And then some more. The sun has already set. The sky is filled with clouds of different shades and hues of lilacs and oranges and pinks. The road is close to barren.
The principal has suspended you and Eddie for a week. His uncle had talked to the principal– the old man had offered to drop you off, the two of you did live in the same trailer park afterall. you had refused but now you wholeheartedly regret it as you look at your watch and realise how long you had been sitting on the dirty, concrete pavement. The gravel was uncomfortable, the air still humid.
But you and your stubborn ass are here waiting for Jim Hopper. At this point, you aren't even sure if he was coming. Your rusty bike stands abandoned in the stands.
As the sky was starting to get darker, you realised that you should probably get going, you shouldn't sit out in the open like this all alone. Then there was the stubborn part of you. You didn't want to move; everything was too much yet nothing at all.
Several Minutes pass. That's when you hear the sound of tires against gravel and engine revving. You look up to see the all too familiar Blazer along with the all too familiar face.
The car stops in front of you, "Hey, kid–", he tries starting while cranking the window down.
"You are six hours late", you interrupt him.
he lets out, "I'm sorry.." his fingers rub over the steering wheel, "C'mon I'll drop you off", he says with a jerk of his head towards the passenger seat.
You walk around the car to get in the passengers side, slumping down in the seat. Jim shifts the gear, driving through the streets of hawkins.
"You got in another fight?" Jim finally breaks the silence of the car, "What happened this time?" He asks before you could tell him. You almost want to be mad at him for being so oblivious to the details but you are tired and your injuries hurt– the school nurse was awful at her job. You are exhausted so you settle on explaining.
"I got suspended…", Jim's eyes flit to your face before quickly turning back onto the road, "...for a week."
The man lets out a deep sigh, "You promised that wouldn't happen"
"And you promised that you'd visit me", you can't help but add a little venom to your words.
"...ah, thats what this is about", he says, almost a mumble to himself.
Jim doesn't say anything for the rest of the car ride. Neither do you. The air is thick with tension and you don't want to be the first one to cut it. You don't say anything when Hopper doesn't turn at the intersection he is supposed to. After a few minutes, the car stops in front of the video store and Jim finally speaks up .
"Alright kid, What's your favourite movie?" You look at him, confused, before shrugging. "What about your favourite snack?" You shrug again.
You wonder why his features soften for a second, "Okay, we need to fix that", he says turning the car off, "You need to develop some taste, kid. Expand your horizons. That make sense?"
You nod before he mutters a 'c'mon' while getting out of the car. You follow suit. You and Hopper pick out a random movie and some snacks and popcorn. Then he drives you to your trailer where you watch the movie and enjoy the sweet and salty snacks to your heart's delight.
Somewhere near the halfway mark of the movie, you fell asleep– the exhaustion of the day finally taking over. When Hopper looks back from the screen to look at you to see how much you were enjoying the movie, he notices your closed eyes, the steady rise and fall of your chest as your head was lolled to the side.
Jim immediately pauses the movie. When he looks at the time, the clock reads 9:30 p.m., he decides it was pretty late. The man moves to pick you up and carry you to your bedroom, the movement wakes you up. It isn't until he finally put you on the mattress, that you speak up.
"Hopper?" Jim hums in acknowledgement. "Is the movie over?"
"No but you need to sleep, it's getting late", he smoothens your blanket over you. "We will finish it... later?"
"Later", you echo. Jim was getting up to leave when you call out again, "Are you... leaving?"
"Yeah, kid. I'm sorry"
"You can stay", you try to bargain.
"I can't. But you'll see me later this week I promise", he turns to leave again before he notices the teddy bear sitting by the shelves. "You still got this bear?"
"Mr. Arnold", you correct him through a yawn.
"Right, right. Mr. Arnold Bearenbearer– I remember." He chuckles to himself, a smile creeping onto his face at the name he made up when he gave it to a younger scared you. the toy is old, the blue ribbon around its neck is fraying, tattered-- well-loved. it was one of Sarah's favourites, "You take good care of him?" You nod in response.
"Good, because if you take care of him..."
"he will take good care of me."
".. yeah, its like a superpower– I’ve said this all before, haven't I?”
You nod with a sleepy shy smile.
“Yeah, well I'm an old man, kid. Can't keep up.” Jim smiles and you mirror it before your features contort into another yawn. "Good night kid. Sleep tight"
"Good night."
…
You have a headache, similar to the one you'd have back when you had powers, it had subsided earlier in the day but increased again when you got to the mall. There are too many people, you ascertain as you walk behind Max and El, weaving through the crowd. Max takes El and inadvertently you, to various shops in the mall. Giggles from the two girls fill the air as they try the various things from dresses to hats and even shoes. Trying to find the super-powered girl her style, something she could call her own.
El had a grin pasted on her face and so did Max and you knew that this was going to be the start of an amazing friendship.
You are glad El was starting to find who she is– finding out what she loves and what she doesn't. and Max is the perfect person to encourage and empower her without being patronising to the girl.
In the shoe store, El is trying on a pair of high heels. Her legs wobble as she tries to strut in the shoes, losing her balance almost immediately, the girl falls to the ground. You and Max are quick to help her get up. When you look up, you see a group of girls, with a judgemental look painted upon their faces.
Your nostrils flare, fists clench and you are about to say something to the strangers. But before you can do so, the girls beside you do something that you would never have expected— they laugh. They brush it off and unapologetically laugh.
Max leads El and you towards the food court. Your ears perk at the mention of scoops ahoy. You know that Steve would probably be there, maybe you could apologise for whatever Jim had said to him. Maybe get an answer for why you couldn't get ahold of him earlier.
As you walk through the herd of people with a slight pep in your step, you try your best to follow the two girls to the ice cream parlour.
Suddenly, your shoulders knock against someone, when you turn to see who it was, you are met with a man in a security uniform.
For the split second you both look at each other, annoyance and irritation flashes on his features along with a hint of what seems to be recognition; but you don't recognise the man, you are sure of it.
Confusion in your mind is quickly swept under the rug as the two girls quickly lead you towards scoops ahoy. Thoughts of the stranger long gone.
There on the counter is Steve Harrington, who had just finished serving two young boys.
"Hey, Harrington", Max greets.
"Hey", you mouth, shyly waving towards him from behind the two girls.
"What do you guys want?", The boy gestures towards the ice cream tubs, completely ignoring your greeting and skipping all pleasantries.
The girls gave in their orders, the boy starts to scoop the strawberry and vanilla ice cream, not even sparing a glance towards you.
"What about you (y/n)?" Eleven questions.
you blink a little dumbly, "Huh?"
"Which one d'you want?", Max asks.
"I…", your voice trails off when your gaze finally met Steve's– his jaw clenches and he had an unreadable expression on his face, "I don't know... I'll take any"
Suddenly, the window slides open behind Steve, revealing a girl with short blonde hair, headphones around her neck. She whispers something to Steve and the boy says something back. The girl smiles, and she looks pretty and you couldn't help but feel a tinge of jealousy.
He goes scooping one for you too– the same flavour which he'd gotten for you the day before. The boy turns around with two cones of ice cream in his hands, handing them to the girls and giving you yours without even looking at you. Your fingers brush together, the boy quickly retracts his hands and turns back towards the two girls. The girls mutter a "thanks" before starting to eat the sweet goodness.
"Wait a second," for a split second his gaze flicks towards you before going back to El, "are you even allowed to be here?" He knows the answer to his own question, you aren't allowed. You know the question is directed towards you, despite him saying it to El. Yet he dares not to look at you.
Your sister and Max fall into a fit of giggles before turning to leave. Your eyes are still locked onto Steve's, the expression on his face that you couldn't decode, one you'd never seen on his face– you didn't know what it meant and oh, did you want to stay and find out. But the two girls were already almost out of the store and you were supposed to look after them.
You mutter a little "bye" before turning to leave too– almost sprinting towards the girls. The boy doesn't return your salutation and instead just looks at the direction from where you'd left.
"Hey, dingus"
"Jesus, Christ. What?" Steve flinches at the sudden appearance of Robin beside him
"I would appreciate if you tried not to burn holes into our customers", Robin says leaning against the counter, "Also I got the second sentence"
"Great."
"Okay, you know what? I'm done with this"
"With what?"
"You! You've been acting this way for two days now. What the hell is happening?"
"Nothing is happening"
"Oh, really? 'cause you look like a kicked puppy right now"
"No I don't."
"Who was that?", she quirks her brow, jerking her chin towards where you had just been, "The person you just served?"
"They were Dustin's friends", he answers as nonchalantly as he could, shrugging,
"No, dingus, the older one."
"Also, Dustin's friend"
"So why the hell did you look at 'Dustin's friend' with such a dejected look?"
"That's just how my face looks and why do you care anyway?"
His coworker sighs before turning towards the backroom once again, mumbling a raspy "whatever". She does know now that Steve's demeanour had something to do with you. She could probably discern if she investigated a bit more. But at that moment she had bigger things to decipher like a super-secret Russian code.
…
"Why did Steve look like he was mad at you?" Eleven whispers to you– ever observant.
"I don't know", you whisper back to her.
"Oh, you've gotta be shitting me", the redhead who is walking ahead of you spoke up. Your gaze follows her eyeline and you see the boy's of the party by the bike stands. "Isn't this a nice surprise!" Max exclaims sarcastically.
Mike drops his bike, stunned, "What're you doing here?" He interrogates, pointing towards El.
"Shopping." Your sister states.
"This is her new style.. what d'you think?"
"What's wrong with you? You know she's not supposed to be here", he then turns to you and points an accusatory finger towards you, "You know she's not supposed to be here"
"What is she, your pet?"
"Yeah, am I your pet?"
"What? No!"
"Why do you treat me like garbage?"
"What?"
"You said Nana was sick"
"She is!"
"Yeah, she's so sick", Lucas speaks up from behind mike.
"Which is why we're here– to shop for Nana and also we're here to get something for you but it's hard 'cause I only have three dollars and fifty cents"
"It's Super hard", Lucas backs Mike up.
You notice Will, who stands behind them, not participating in the interaction. The young boy's gaze jumping from one person to another before it finally lands on Mike.
"You lie..", Eleven starts, "Why do you lie?"
When she gets no response from Mike, she walks closer to the boy. she looks at him for a second before her head turns at the sound of the bus arriving.
"I dump your ass."
Max's, Will's and lucas' eyes go wide at your sister's declaration. Max's mouth hangs open before Eleven grabs her and you by your wrists and pulls you to the bus.
Good for her, you think.
…
It is a Saturday. It is about to be seven days since Hopper promised to finish the movie with you. You stopped wondering when his later would come.
Since you are suspended from school you offered to do more shifts at the gift shop.
Every now and then teenagers from Hawkins high and middle school come in through the doors of the shop and they give you wary looks. Of course, word travels in a small town like Hawkins like wildfire.
The day the fight happened, everyone and their mother came to know that (Y/n), who doesn't seem to have a last name, and Eddie Munson had gotten in a fight with Tony Reed.
Tony Reed was a bully, not the harmless kind either. The older boy is the type to torment someone for days on end just for his entertainment but still never face the consequences for any of his actions.
Word started travelling around: Tony Reed was moving out of Hawkins.
Maybe you should've broken his elbow sooner.
You, your coworker and your boss close up the store at around 8 in the night. The older lady offered to give you a drive home, but you, however, refused. Despite how sweet the lady seemed, you still couldn't trust anyone. So you bicycle through the empty streets under the yellow streetlights– back to the trailer-van that you call home.
When you enter the trailer park, passing the Munson's trailer, you see a very familiar vehicle standing infront of your home. Your feet peddle faster, when you finally reach the car, you leave your bicycle behind and go to the slightly open driver's window. The person's face covered with the familiar hat.
You knock on the window, the man jolts awake– a groan audible through the cracked window. He removes his hat and as soon as he meets your eyes, his face softens– a smile appearing on his face.
You step back as he opens the door. Before Jim could shut the door behind him, you run to tackle his torso.
"You came!" You hug Jim, your arms barely reaching around and touching around his frame. The man lets out an oomf at the impact.
"Of course I did. I promised, didn't I?" he says while holding the back of your head, gently patting your hair– it has grown out a lot since he first met you.
You nod against his chest, not letting go of the grasp you had on him.
"Okay, kid. I think that's enough affection for the day. How bout we get inside, finish that movie huh? I bought some of those snacks you liked", you only hug him tighter in response. Hopper chuckles, continuing to hold and caress the back of your head.
…
There is the rev of an engine, the telltale sign of the arrival of Jim Hopper.
The door flings open, then closes harshly behind the tall man. You watch him from the couch as you were browsing through channels on the TV. Jim looks at you but immediately averts his gaze, he walks a little further in the house, his movements loopy and rocky. He is drunk, extremely so– the mostly empty bottle in his hand backing up your conclusion.
Jim stops in his tracks again. "Hey!" He shouts with a little gravel in his voice, "Hey!" He repeats again, walking towards El's room where your sister and her friend are. "When I say three inches, three–"
When the door flings open, he expects to be met with the sight of El and Mike but instead he is met with her and Max reading comic books on the bedroom floor.
"Do you knock? jeez"
"Yeah, jeez!" Eleven repeats.
"Oh, hey", Jim, who seemed to be unable to respond, slurs out, "I'm sorry… I thought that you–"
"Mike's not here", Max interrupts his rambling as if reading his mind.
"Max wanted to have a… sleepover. Is that okay?"
"Yeah." Hopper nods while repeatedly saying, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah", he awkwardly looks between the two girls and then asks the redhead, "Your parents know about this?"
"Yup."
"Yeah, that's cool. That– that's really cool." The man just keeps looking at the two girls, almost spacing out in his drunken state.
"Did you need something?"
"No, no", he shakes his head, his palm reaching for the door knob. "I'll let you– I'll leave"
He stands outside the now closed door. His drunken features morph into a smirk as he grabs yet another beer can and settled himself on the armchair in front of the tv.
"'sup." You sit down on the couch beside him with a plop.
He looks over at you. "You're talking to me now?"
"Don't worry, I'm still pissed off at you but", you say, not looking at him. "I think we need to discuss some things. Have a talk"
"Great", he takes a big gulp of the beer in his hand.
"So let's start easy", you say stretching your arms. "How was work? I mean... that's where you were, right?", you say, eyes gesturing towards the most colorful shirt you'd ever seen on Hopper.
"Yeah", he slurs out.
"I'm a human lie detector, remember? I can tell when you're lying. It was the one thing I was good at, So, try and give me the truth", you assert dryly, "Were you at work?"
You barely hear it when he says, "...no"
"Where were you?"
"At a friend's…"
"Friend's what? Birthday?"
"Ye– no"
"Who was this friend?" you interrogate with narrow eyes.
"They never came"
"That wasn't my question but okay", you pause, eyes trained on him, trying to read his expression, "Even though they didn't come, who was it you were expecting?"
He takes another big swig from the can before he says all hesitant, "...Powell and... Callaghan?"
"Lie."
"Godamnit, Joyce– it was Joyce,'' he finally admits, frustrated.
"So, you were just going on a dinner with your friend Joyce"
"Like I said, she never came"
"Yeah but you were going to go on dinner with Joyce, if she'd come"
"But she didn't"
"But you wanted her to", you pause before asking, "Was this a date?"
"No!"
You both know it is lie, you don't even need to state that it is a lie, so you just look at the drunk man beside you while he takes a swig of the beer can in his hand.
"Next question", you state, folding your legs onto the sofa, "What did you say to Steve?"
"What–" Jim almost seems startled by the sudden subject change.
"Yesterday. What did you tell Steve"
"I didn't tell him anything", you look at him a little more, but this wasn't a lie. You can tell he is telling the truth. "I mean, that the boy wasn't there when I left", he further clarifies, when you don't say anything.
"Oh." is all that comes out.
"Where did you get that shirt?" The man beside you suddenly asks while you're in your thoughts.
"I've always had this", you lie. Max and El had convinced you to buy some clothes back at the mall as well.
"No– it's brand new", Hopper insists.
"So is yours Hopper–", you once again gesture towards his bright coloured shirt, "but I guess you wanted to look good for your friend Joyce, right?"
its tense, he takes another sip from his beer. after a few seconds, you sigh before getting up, "anyway, think I'm gonna teach El a new word later– hypocrite. She needs to be familiar. how does that sound?"
You don't wait for his answer to come, you get up, walk away and slam the door behind you.

More Jim and Sybok please
Happy Birthday
🎈🎈🎈
a continuation of 1 2 3
Jim letting himself into his house isn't anything new, but he's loud about it, shouting about school or his aunt or that Orion girl that's made the poor choice to let Jim get into her pants.
This time he hears the door open, close, and doesn't hear anything again until Jim's breathing is right next to him.
Sybok looks up and frowns. "You look like shit."
Hanging out with Jim has either been excellent or horrible for his syntax, depending on the perspective. His father is going to be appalled.
"My project," he starts, then stops.
Sybok waits, then prompts, "The one on crop growth? Did you get a bad grade? I thought it wasn't due for another two months."
"It's not," he says, and Sybok had registered the soft way he's speaking before, but hadn't analyzed it. It's just as abnormal as his silent entrance, as the tight, uncomfortable way he's holding himself. "I've ran the numbers over a dozen times. I've checked, and checked, and I analyzed the soil composition, and checked the ion storm projections, and I've dissected almost a hundred stalks-"
"Jim!" he shouts, reaching out to grab his clothed bicep and resisting the urge to lower his hand to Jim's bare forearm. It would be a breach of privacy, but Jim's starting to worry him, and a light level meld might tell him what's wrong faster than this rambling.
But the touch seems to settle him and Jim takes in a big breath that he lets out slowly enough that he almost induces a coughing fit. "We're going to die."
