1. The Letter That Started It All
On a sunny day in late May, I received a letter from someone whom I'd corresponded with on a story years earlier. The letter was confusing and fairly alarming. I will attach it here:
Something is going on here. I'm missing time. I can't seem to remember what my job is, but I know I've been doing it. And I get all warm inside when I think about work. A little voice in my head is saying I'm doing a good job. But at WHAT? I wake up at night from dreams that… I can't remember. Or won't remember. Or don't want to remember. My clothes don't fit anymore. When I ask the people here who used to be my friends they all tell me not to worry. That it just means I'm settling in to the job. I don't think I want to settle in. But I also can't seem to leave. Please help me. Emily Voss
Emily had recently taken a job at Sunda Systems, a global conglomerate with it's research headquarters in a North Carolina town known as Eden Springs. Her position was that of an Administrative Assistant in the Optical Research Division.
According to a phone call I'd had with her just after her hiring, she took this position in early April after having been recruited by another employee. I believe his last name was Varas, though I am admittedly basing that on an unremarkable memory from months ago.
That phone call was the last I spoke with Emily until this letter arrived. That was not uncommon. We were not very close friends, just acquaintances and occasional collaborators. She wasn't one to kid around very much, but I couldn't shake the idea that this was all just a practical joke.
Something in the back of my head was convinced that nothing bad could be happening at Sunda. After all their motto is "Connected in Harmony." I have a Sunda modem and router combo here in my apartment, though I'd never given it a second thought until I began this project.
It is for this reason, and a deep regret, that I ignored her letter for days. But it kept nagging at me and so I decided to do some cursory digging. After the glowing reviews from top brass in various governments and corporations, I found a small post on a forum devoted to conspiracy theories. I will post it's contents here:
Does anyone think it's strange that S*nda S*st*ms has a positions listed on their job boards seeking psychologists, psychiatrists, and neurologists? Any company that big has got to be up to no good.
The post is still visible in it's archived form, however the user, who went by w3bofli3s_222 made no posts after that one, and their account has been deactivated. No contact information was available for them.
For their part, that did appear to be true. The job listing website "Karear" contained the above listing for a Behavioral Psychologist who would be making six figures.
What would an internet infrastructure company need with a behavioral psychologist? And what work would they be doing that would allow them a bonus?
Out of curiosity, I inquired. Two hours later, I received a phone call from an unlisted North Carolina area code. The following is a transcript of the relevant parts of that call:
R: Hello there! My name is Reggie. I'm so happy you're interested in the psych position. How can I be of assistance. I: Hello Reggie. It's nice to hear from you. My name is Helen, which I'm sure you know from the form I filled out. I've been job hunting and I was wondering what exactly the job entails. R: Of course I'd be glad to explain everything. Have you heard of our company before? Perhaps you've used one of our devices? I: Yes, my internet provider uses your routers. R: Wonderful. Then you know that our mission is to make the world Connected in Harmony! To that end, we employ several psychological experts to act in concert with human resources. We have some of them monitoring employee morale and productivity. Some act as advisors to help us maintain healthy work cultures. And some act as councilors that are available to our staff. I: That is quite impressive... R: The position we are currently seeking to fill would be one of the advisory roles. We want our employees to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible while on the job. It's very important to us that our employees feel at home here; that they can breath easy and lose all their stress. Would you agree that's important. I: Yes... I would... R: That's good. It's important that prospective employees share our values, the first of course being Connected in Harmony. When people are together, they are understood. When people are understood, they fear less. And when people fear less, they relax more. I: ... R: Helen are you there? I: What? Oh sorry yes! I was just looking at my notes. Now the website mentioned a bonus structure? R: Yes, that's something that we could talk about that more in-depth during a formal interview. We like to reward our advisors when things are running smoothly. If employees are happy, then the psych team is doing it's job well. I: Okay well I think I have what I need for know. Thank you for taking the time to talk. R: Of course. I look forward to seeing your application soon.
It was an odd call. I found myself almost nodding off as he spoke, though I was sure I'd gotten a full night's sleep. I came away from it believing that things couldn't be as bad as Emily made them seem. Sunda was a good company determined to do good in the world.
Right?
But as I logged into my computer, I noticed the little light was on that signals the webcam was active. I checked through all my open windows and nothing should have been accessing the camera. And as I stared at it, confused, it blinked off.
I guess it could have been a glitch, but just in case, I got a small piece of electrical tape and covered the webcam. I left the light exposed, though. Better to know than to blind myself, too.
It was such a little thing, but it was enough. Emily's letter. The weird job listing. The call that made me feel so strange. And now the mysterious webcam activation. It was too many oddities to write off.
It was time to start investigating in earnest.

Andrew was entering his third month of unemployment when he sat down at his computer and opened the inbox of his LinkedIn account. He’d received a response to a query he’d sent off four days after his friend-turned-manager walked him into a conference room swimming with sunlight, smelling of cologne and the faintest hint of perfume left behind by a group of attorneys who’d recently vacated the space after a five-hour meeting.
“I’m sorry, man,” Colin Perkins had said. Andrew’s eyes glided to the glass conference table, landing on the silver tray holding a molehill of bagels. He imagined they must be stale by now, having been left there uncovered in the icy office air.
Someone had planted the pointed end of a white plastic knife in an open container of chive-and-jalapeño cream cheese. It brought to mind the moon landing; all that was missing was a tiny American flag. A laugh trudged up his throat, but he disguised it as a cough.
“I told you,” Colin continued, raking his hands over his manicured Afro, “that the last to hire would be the first to go.”
A month earlier, seventeen women and two men had accused the CEO of the company of sexual misconduct. That news had plummeted the stock. The layoffs followed. Andrew had witnessed dozens of employees being escorted by security from the building like criminals. Now it was his turn.
Andrew nodded, placed a comforting hand on Daniel’s shoulder, and squeezed. The crisp cotton of Daniel’s shirt felt cool beneath his palm. “It’s okay, man, I understand. Don’t sweat it.”
He’d spent that first week revamping his résumé, calling friends and old colleagues, people who might know of a job opportunity at their own place of employment or elsewhere. He’d never had a LinkedIn account, but took the time to set one up. To conserve the little bit of savings he had, Andrew dropped his gym membership and went back to drinking tap water instead of the bottled Evian he loved. He gave up Starbucks coffee and the expensive cabernet sauvignon he purchased by the case.
By week three, he was spending his days on the couch, dressed in boxer shorts and sweat socks. He’d stopped opening the blinds and only went outside to empty the garbage. He whiled away the hours playing video games, and watching Netflix and Pornhub. Oftentimes, he went days without brushing his teeth.
When his mother called to check on him, Andrew lied, claiming he had several interviews lined up. When his father took the phone into another room to ask if he needed money, Andrew assured him that he was fine on the financial front, even though he wasn’t. He’d made up his mind to sell his Shelby Mustang before he took a dime from his parents. That was a big decision because he loved that car more than he’d ever loved any woman.
The day he opened the e-mail, the panic had just started to set in. He could feel it creeping along the back of his neck, like the soft scuttle of caterpillar legs.
From: OBF, INC.

OBF, INC. wants to talk to you now! To set up an interview TEXT OBF51893.
Liaison was just a fancy French word for customer service agent. Well, that was his skill set. Andrew was an expert at assisting people.
He texted the number and received an instant response that directed him to call a telephone number and enter his personal code: 1032.
An automated voice offered him two available interview dates. He was instructed to press 1 for the first date and 2 for the second. The mechanical voice told him that he would receive a call advising him where the interview would take place.
It all seemed very clandestine. Andrew was cynical, but his desperation outweighed his skepticism.
A day later, he received a call from a woman with a Southern drawl . . . Georgia, Alabama, Texas? He couldn’t quite pinpoint where she hailed from, but listening to her speak conjured visions of sweet tea and fireflies. She asked for his full government name and the code he’d received via text message. There was a pause, two clicks, and then the syrupy voice asked if he had a pen available. He did. After she’d rattled off the address, she wished him good luck. There were a few more clicks and then the line went dead.
He walked into the lobby of the forty-story office building and was struck by the contemporary opulence of the space. Marble floors, potted palms that towered eight feet into the air, white leather sofas, and a slick-looking Louboutin-red reception desk.
Andrew presented his license to the security guard and was given a name tag, which he clipped to the lapel of his ash-gray jacket. He was told to go to the eighteenth floor.
While waiting for the elevator, he perused the list of companies listed on a plaque mounted to the wall. OBF, Inc. was nowhere to be found.
He smirked, shrugged his shoulders, and stepped into the elevator. On the eighteenth floor, smack outside of the elevator door, was a sheet of lined legal paper taped haphazardly to the wall. Scrawled on its face in black marker was: This Way to OBF, INC. Below that was an arrow.
He started down the hall. A man the color of cedar and as tall as an NBA player speed-walked past him, mumbling to himself. Andrew thought he looked dazed, as if he’d just received news that a loved one had passed away.
“Good morning,” Andrew murmured.
The man turned eyes as wide as saucers on Andrew. He opened his mouth and muttered something that Andrew wasn’t sure he’d heard correctly. The elevator doors slid open just as Andrew leaned in and asked, “Uhm, sorry, brother, but did you say run?”
The man leaped into the elevator, pressed his spine against the back wall, and fixed his eyes on the glass numbers above the closing doors.
Andrew stood blinking at his reflection in the chrome elevator doors. After a moment, he shrugged and continued down the hallway where he came upon a second handwritten sign directing him to turn left at the women’s bathroom. He rounded a corner and found himself staring at eleven men seated in folding chairs. They all looked up from their iPhones and Androids. Andrew nodded and headed toward the pretty blonde seated behind a metal desk.
“Good morning,” she smiled. “Name?”
“Andrew Jamison.”
“Okay, Mr. Jamison, please take a seat. Mrs. Americus will be with you shortly.”
He scrutinized his fellow applicants. They were all black men save for the one white guy with a man-bun who was called in as soon as Andrew sat down. Man-bun wasn’t in there long. In less than five minutes, cheeks flushed and cursing under his breath, he stormed across the reception area and out of sight.
Andrew clenched his jaw and made eye contact with another man across the room from him. He imagined the unease in the man’s eyes mirrored his own uncertainty.
“Andrew Jamison, Mrs. Americus will see you now. Just through that door.”
The door opened to a large office filled with cubicles and desks, manned by women tapping away on typewriters or murmuring into the handsets of—
Andrew slowed his gait.
Are those rotary telephones and, wait, Royal typewriters?
As Andrew gawked, a large man with a mustache as thick has a shoe brush appeared before him. Andrew glanced up and then quickly shifted his gaze away from the brawny man’s left eyelid, which was weighed down with a sty the size of a dime.
“In there,” the man huffed, aiming a chubby finger at a closed door not more than five feet from where they stood.
The office was as small as a janitor’s closet. And dark.
The lone window on the far left wall faced the shadowy back of a department store. Metal file cabinets lined the walls; some of the drawers were open, revealing manila folders bulging with papers. He could see, even in the muddy darkness of the room, a layer of dust atop the cabinets. Hanging on the walls were at least twenty framed photographs of people, all of whom were black.
The air was rife with the scent of cigarette smoke.
Andrew remembered people smoking at their desks when he went to visit his mother at her office job when he was young. Once, on a flight to Detroit with his grandmother, he stood at the back of the plane waiting to use the bathroom, and found himself engulfed in a cloud of smoke billowing from the cigarettes of three passengers.
He couldn’t recall the exact year cities around the country began banning smoking in bars and restaurants, but he was supremely aware that smokers had to be at least four hundred feet away from the entrance of any building if they wanted to light up.
Yet here was this woman, puffing away like it was 1975. Andrew eyed the near-empty box of Winstons and then the woman. She was robust—a meat-and-potatoes sort of gal, with doughy cheeks and large blue eyes. Her sun-bleached blond hair fanned back from her face—a style made famous by the eighties icon Farrah Fawcett. Her lips were slathered in tangerine-colored lipstick. The same color rung the filters of a dozen long-dead Winston butts heaped in the black ceramic ashtray. Andrew thought, If she’s going for clown instead of glamour, well, bull’s-eye!
Ornate rings twinkled on seven of her ten fingers, the rose-gold chain she wore around her neck dribbled down her chest and disappeared into her cleavage. She looked to be in her midfifties.
“Good morning, Mr. Jamison. Please have a seat.” Her eyes remained glued to the sheet of paper clutched in her hands. Andrew assumed it was his résumé.
He sat down.
“You graduated from Brown University?”
“Y-yes, I did. I graduated summa cum laude in 1990.”
Her desk was cluttered with newspaper clippings; stacks of aging yellowed papers, and dated fashion magazines. Andrew’s eyebrows climbed. Was that Marcia from the seventies sitcom The Brady Bunch on the cover of that Glamour magazine?
Andrew chuckled to himself. This had to be an elaborate joke. Someone was putting him on. His eyes ranged around the office in search of a concealed camera.
“Impressive,” she said finally, looking him directly in the eye. “Do you have a wife?”
“S-sorry?”
“Are you married, Mr. Jamison?”
“No, I’m not.”
She searched his face. “Are you gay?”
Andrew bristled. “Mrs. Americus, I don’t think you’re legally allowed to ask me that question.”
She smirked.
“It’s a yes-or-no question, Mr. Jamison. I know it’s unusual, but believe me, for this position I would need to know.”
His rent was due tomorrow and then again in thirty more days. His savings were dwindling. “No, I’m not gay.”
“Do you have children?”
“One daughter, she’s twenty-two years old.”
“Do you have a good relationship with your daughter? With the mother?”
“Yes.”
Mrs. Americus glanced at his résumé. “Perfect.” She reached for the dying cigarette and brought it to her lips. “And according to your application, you’ve never been arrested. Is that true?”
“Yes.”
“Well, we will be doing a background check.”
“Understood.”
“Do you have any bad habits? Do you use narcotics?”
“No ma’am.”
“Any . . . um . . . undesirable recreational activities?”
“Undesirable?”
“Porn? Well, not just porn. Kiddie porn.”
Andrew’s mouth fell open.
“No judgment, Mr. Jamison. Again, I just need to know.”
“No, I do not watch kiddie porn,” Andrew spat.
“Good!” she exclaimed, drumming her fingers on the desk. “Let me tell you the specifics of the job . . .”
Some of the faces behind the glass frames looked familiar. Again Andrew found himself squinting. Was that Omarosa? He pitched forward in his chair.
Mrs. Americus stopped talking and followed his gaze. “Um, yes,” she spouted. “That is who you think it is. She’s been one of our best recruits.”
Andrew swallowed.
Mrs. Americus stubbed out her cigarette and laced her fingers under her chin. “Some of our liaisons work directly with government agencies. That’s a promotion of sorts. Of course, before you can be assigned to the big house—I mean the White House—you’d first have to prove yourself out in the field.” She giggled. “In the field. You get it? It’s a double entendre.”
Andrew’s mouth went dry.
She twisted around in the chair and pointed to a photograph of a pair of middle-aged women standing shoulder to shoulder, each holding a red MAGA baseball cap. “Those ladies are Diamond and Silk. Do you know them?”
Andrew shot out up from the chair. For a moment, he thought his knees would buckle. “What does OBF stand for?”
Mrs. Americus reached for the pack of cigarettes. “OBF stands for One Black Friend.”
“One Black Friend?”
“Yes. You see, in these troubling times, times where so many people are labeling white people as racist, we need black people to stand up for us—to have our backs, as your people are fond of saying. Sometimes, Mr. Jamison, a God-fearing, good white person may be accused of a crime or some other offense perpetrated against a person of color, and when the accused does not have a person of color in his circle, it looks bad. The public may see him . . . or her, as a racist simply because their circle is . . . white. Lily.
“And that’s wrong. Not having black friends does not make a white person racist by default. Anyway,” she waved her hand, “that’s where OBF comes in. We provide that one black friend. That one black friend introduces doubt, and more often than not, that doubt diminishes a large percentage of the negative impact our clients might face.”
Andrew just stared.
“Oh, Mr. Jamison, don’t look so shocked. This practice has been around for centuries.” She pointed to the far wall near the window. “You see that guy there? He was actually the inspiration for this company.”
Andrew peered at the photograph. “Who is he?”
“Joe Oliver.”
“Joe Oliver?”
“Yeah, Joe Oliver. You don’t remember him? Joe Oliver, George Zimmerman’s one black friend.” Mrs. Americus raised a black ceramic coffee mug to her lips and sipped. The red decal on the side of the mug read: Black Tears.
Andrew’s stomach lurched, perspiration beading across his forehead. “This is some kind of joke, right?”
“Oh, I assure you this is not a joke and I am very serious. As serious as a heart attack. Is that how the saying goes? As serious as a heart attack?”
Andrew started toward the door.
“Wait, Mr. Jamison. Look here.” She pointed at a photograph hanging above the row of filing cabinets. “This is another one of our liaisons. Since he’s been working for us, he’s paid off his student loans and I understand that he’s just recently purchased a Cadillac.”
Andrew followed her index finger to the photo of a grinning black man holding a Blacks for Trump sign above his head like a trophy.
“Shall we talk about salary?”
The lights flickered.
He thought, Maybe I’m still asleep. Maybe this is a nightmare.
“Andrew? I can see you’re having a hard time processing all of this. But really, it’s not as uncommon as you might think. We live in America, this is a capitalist country, and we monetize everything. Everything.”
Andrew couldn’t remember reaching for the doorknob, but suddenly he was stumbling through the reception area.
He fled down the corridor, rounded the first corner and then the next. A slight man the color of honeyed milk stepped from the elevator. He wore a yellow dress shirt with a red bow tie. His dark-blue khakis were flooded just enough to offer a wink of his orange-and-navy argyle socks.
Upon Andrew’s frantic approach, the startled stranger stepped swiftly out of his path. Andrew didn’t make eye contact. He jabbed at the elevator button until the doors slid open.
Weeks later, Andrew was seated in a truck-stop diner with his fork poised over a plate of scrambled eggs and corned beef hash.
The mounted television was tuned to Fox News. The anchor reported that yet another young black man had been gunned down by a vigilante, another Good Samaritan, named Christopher Parks.
Christopher Parks was heading home from his job as a sanitation man when he spotted young Daniel Latham sitting in Starbucks, dozing over his law textbooks. Parks entered the establishment, woke Latham with a tap to his shoulder, and asked if he lived in the area. According to eyewitnesses, Latham replied that he did in fact live in the neighborhood. Parks demanded to see Latham’s ID and was met with laughter. The law student gathered his belongings and stood to leave—rather menacingly, one eyewitness reported.
That was when Christopher Parks pulled his weapon and fired. The stunned Latham, still laughing, crumpled into his chair and pressed his hand over the whole in his heart. It wasn’t until he saw the blood that the smile slipped from his lips and he began to cry.
The cops were called, but not an ambulance. Well, not immediately.
The police shackled Latham to the chair and took Parks to the police station for questioning. The woman behind the counter gave Parks a high five and a tall Caffè Mocha to go.
By the time an ambulance arrived, Daniel Latham was dead, having bled out all over his take-home final exam.
In the days that followed, it was revealed that Daniel Latham had several unpaid parking tickets and was thrice fined for not scooping his dog’s poop. Not only that—he was also a practicing Buddhist who supported a woman’s right to choose.
A search of Latham’s apartment unearthed a well-worn copy of Alex Haley’s The Autobiography of Malcolm X, which was on his nightstand alongside Jay-Z’s Decoded. This discovery was further evidence that Latham was no angel.
Laura Ingraham looked directly into the camera and told her viewers that Christopher Parks was a hero, a polite and well-spoken man who had been raised by his father after his mother died from breast cancer when he was just three years old. Yes, as a youth, Christopher had been suspended from school for fighting, and as a young man he’d beaten a girlfriend with a pipe. Later, when he was in his early thirties, he’d threatened to castrate his boss—a black man old enough to be his grandfather. All of that behavior, Laura Ingraham said, was directly connected to the trauma of losing a mother at such a tender age.
She paused, and in that moment her entire face pulsed with empathy. “That said,” she continued, “Al Sharpton, along with the Black Lives Matter terrorist organization, have labeled Christopher Parks a racist and are calling for his arrest.” She shook her head and chuckled. “Earlier today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Christopher’s longtime best friend, Andrew Jamison . . .”
Andrew lowered his fork, reached for his shades, and slipped them onto his face.

Federal Agency Rejects Developer’s Report That Massive Grain Elevator Won’t Harm Black Heritage Sites
For the second time in six months, a federal agency reprimanded a Louisiana developer for failing to adequately assess the harm that its proposed $400 million agricultural development would cause to neighboring Black communities and historic sites.
In a forceful letter dated Dec. 23, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rejected claims by the developer, Greenfield LLC, that its massive grain transfer facility in St. John the Baptist Parish upriver from New Orleans will have “no adverse effects.” The Corps is considering a permit application by Greenfield to build on federally protected waters and has the power to halt the project.
That new report, which the Corps received in November, did not address the agency’s demand that the developer conducts a more complete assessment of how the project could damage historic sites and harm residents of nearby towns, according to the Corps’ December letter.
“The report,” the letter reads, “just doesn’t demonstrate adequate engagement, and that must be rectified.”
A Greenfield spokesperson said our team of respected expert consultants and have done thorough evaluations to consider any and all potential impacts. The statement said Greenfield takes seriously its responsibility to provide regulatory agencies with accurate and complete information consistent with the regulatory requirements.
The Corps’ letter criticizes Greenfield and its contractors for failing to meaningfully consult with people whose lives would be impacted by the dozens of looming grain silos, new rail, truck, and shipping traffic, and pollutants from the facility. It says Greenfield and its consultants have not done enough to account for how the development project might harm communities of color, a requirement under federal environmental justice standards.
“It’s very disappointing that they would continue to double down on the report, that they are still saying there will not be any detrimental effects,” Erin Edwards, who blew the whistle on the earlier report, told ProPublica in a recent interview.
“It’s very disappointing that they would continue to double down on the report, that they are still saying there will not be any detrimental effects,” Erin Edwards, who blew the whistle on the earlier report, told ProPublica in a recent interview. Edwards co-authored the first version of the information when she worked as an architectural historian for Gulf South Research Corporation, the for-profit cultural resources, and archaeological consulting firm hired by another of Greenfield’s consultants to conduct a federally required assessment of historical sites.
Edwards resigned in late 2021 after her report was stripped of every mention of possible harm to communities or cultural properties, including her conclusion that the area surrounding the development should be listed as a historic district because of its connection to histories of slavery. In internal Gulf South emails obtained by ProPublica, a company manager wrote that it would lose its contract for the report — and could lose future work — if it didn't change the findings.
“Gulf South knew all along that the project would harm the historic plantations there, and they knew that it would hurt the area as a whole,” Edwards said. “There’s no way to look at the evidence and not see that it’s going to be detrimental.”
The Greenfield grain facility has been the target of sustained pushback from nearby communities, civil and human rights groups, and historic preservation organizations, as well as from other federal agencies, including the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, which oversees national preservation policy. The land where the development is planned sits beside the Whitney Plantation Museum, which serves as a memorial to enslaved people in Louisiana. One plot of land down the river is another unusually well preserved plantation designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Saturn propped his chin in his hand as he read over the same paragraph for what had to be the tenth time.
Galactic was becoming more complex by the day. And, while that was a great thing towards their goals, that also meant that more and more needed to be managed. Unfortunately their recruiting efforts also tended to attract people who were young and untrained (if not actively unskilled). If something needed to be done, and something always needed to be done, it tended to fall back on Saturn.
Every minute that he had a chance to be back at his desk was dedicated to studying. This generally meant large books on accounting and engineering, but lately mythology was also increasingly being stressed as vital. Unfortunately, he tended to be stressed and exhausted by the time he got back to his desk. It made the endlessly dry explanations all the harder to absorb.
He was more than a bit grateful when there was a knock at the door to look up to.
“Evening, boss,” he said as he slid a marker into the book and shut it. “What can I do for you?”
“It’s been a year,” Cyrus said. He stayed in the doorway as if it would be awkward to come inside.
Saturn sat back just a bit as he let that sink in. The inheritance Cyrus had received had allowed him to move from street preaching to set up in their own building (and eventually, hopefully, something resembling action) . He'd brought Saturn along with him, and they left their cheap apartment and constant bills behind for some proper stability.
“Yeah… yeah it has, hasn’t it? Kind of crazy to think about." He hesitated before he added, "How are you doing with-?”
“It is traditional to do something to commemorate anniversaries,” Cyrus said quickly.
Their windfall had come from Cyrus's father passing, which he'd done without giving Cyrus any chance to come home and make any amends.
Saturn had seen, then, how much that had stung. He wasn't about to push back on the obvious dodge.
"It is, yeah," he agreed more openly. "Do you have any ideas?"
"I thought that this might be appropriate." He pulled two ramen cups from behind his back. It was the same brand that had made up most of their diet when they'd been broke not so long ago.
Saturn was hardly used to any kind of sentimentality from him, and sat up eagerly. "Oh, yes, that's perfect. I'll get the kettle going."
Cyrus nodded as he took a seat on the opposite side of the desk. "How is your studying coming?"
"It's coming along," Saturn said as he filled and then started the kettle. "There are a lot of technical terms and abbreviations to keep straight." He sat back down and grabbed one of the cups. "Seems your surveying went well. It seemed like you got some great data out of it."
"It was fine enough," he agreed as he readied his own meal. "It will take more to figure out if it's actually usable.”
“And how’s the team?”
Cyrus brow pulled down hard as he tore the seasoning packet open.
He smiled sympathetically. "It's not all their fault. It's not like they're experts, they're just people who are interested in being completed." Saturn pulled over the kettle when it beeped, and poured the boiling water into each cup. “The more direction we have, the more we can actually hire people who know how to do what you need.”
Cyrus tapped at the table as he thought through all of the research they'd gathered. "Let's… I want to know how far and truly the power of a psychic pokemon can be amplified. If there is a limit."
“What’s the plan for that?” he asked as he found his pen.
“I just want to see what can be done at this point,” he said dismissively. “It would be very good if we found that things are that simple.”
He hesitated as he weighed asking a follow up question. Considering the day, though, he decided that he'd do it later. He made a note. "Alright, I'll find people that can handle that."
"Good."
The timer went off. The two of them removed the lids to properly mix their food.
Saturn took up some noodles in his chopsticks, and used it to motion towards Cyrus. "Well, here's to another year."
"Let's hope it's at least this productive," Cyrus agreed before they both took a bite.
The office was painfully quiet as they chewed.
Saturn swallowed forcefully and reluctantly. “I had forgotten this flavor.”
“It is… distinctive,” Cyrus agreed, hesitantly. He picked at his noodles as he debated taking another bite. “It’s hard to believe we ate this every day.”
“It was better than going to bed hungry or not making rent,” Saturn pointed out.
Cyrus nodded in concession as he looked down at what was every bit the cheapest meal on the shelf. “Yes, but the aftertaste is close behind.”
“Yeah…” Saturn tried to take another mouthful and then put it down. “I can’t eat any more of this.”
“Right, me either,” he said gratefully. He put his chopsticks back in the cup and put it down well away from him. “I apologize. I'll leave you to your studies."
“No, this was a nice idea,” Saturn said quickly. His earnestness was in no small part a want to avoid going back to his reading. “We should do things like this more often. I just think that, maybe now that we can afford it, we should just head to the ramen place down the road. The one with those gyoza you really like.”
Cyrus looked over at the full ramen cup, and then back to Saturn. “Yes, that would be a much better idea.”

Financial Opportunities Within the Criminal Underworld aka What the Fuck do the Saints do to Make Cash
Hi, everyone! It's me again, your favorite big boi and resident criminal organization expert Andre. Today we'll be having a semi-brief discussion on what exactly does the fictional gang known as the 3rd Street Saints do to keep the BIG CA$H MONEY flowing. Cause no one ever said running a powerful and sexy gang like their own was gonna be cheap. While I won't get into the specifics regarding the amount of money earned with each and every business venture (do that on your own time), I want to give a general idea of how big of an operation this all is. Especially when you take into account this blog's canon regarding the gang spreading out across the globe.
Now the Saints operate on both sides of the law, though anything that would be considered "legitimate" is still questionable at best. For the sake of simplicity and getting it out of the way, I think we should start by describing the various criminal activities they operate. As a whole, the Saints have their hands in a number of different ventures that operate outside the confines of the law. Their biggest ones being; racketeering, arms and drug trafficking, sex work, loansharking, smuggling, chop shops, illegal gambling, protection rackets, fencing, cyber crimes, and murder-for-hire. On an individual level, members of the Saints are more than welcome to start up their own side-hustles to earn even more cash so long as a percentage of that goes back into the gang. Everyone's doing their part, y'know?
Of course there are plenty of other ways members of the gang can make easy money, whether individually or for the Saints as a whole. Theft (and I'm using it as an umbrella term because there are many types of it) is always a go-to depending on the scope of it. You can go from something as simple as a smash-and-grab to a full-blown heist with all the planning that goes into it. Again, everyone is free to work as they please, so long as they remember to send back some cash. Otherwise you can just fuck off and work on your own without being in a gang.
As the Saints grow in size and expand outwards across the US and the world at large, I like to imagine that they'd take a moment to really think about what sort of work fits the environment that they're in. Not every new location will provide the same opportunities one may find in a different city. So why not accommodate? Adapting to one's surroundings is the key to both personal and financial survival. And while the Saints may be rather unorthodox in the way they manage themselves, you can't deny the fact that they've come a long way from being a mere street gang.
Now let's jump over to the other side of the law and discuss how they earn within that area.
As brought up in a previous post, there is an hourly city income you can receive in both the second and third games of the series. I'm not going to bring up the first game because that was an entirely different iteration of the Saints and we're focused on the Boss running it.
In SR2 and 3 you're able to purchase various stores that give you different amounts of profit, which then all add up towards your total city income. In the second game this is limited to stores and restaurants, but in the third we're given the chance to buy up properties as well. Said properties can range from condos, local stores, a sex shop, to even an entire airport. If you'd like to learn more, then I'd suggest checking out this link here.
Now of course I like to imagine that the gang have other means of gaining a steady flow of income that don't completely fall under the topic of nasty crime. You know for sure that some of the Saints run their own fronts like restaurants, clubs, or anything else that can be used as a means to launder money. The Boss is of course no exception either, as I can see him doing the same here and there to generate more cash.
Some time ago I would have said that the Planet Saints stores definitely create revenue for the gang as well. But after much thinking and taking into consideration what the state of the world is like after what happened at the end of my revised SR3 plot for this blog, I think a majority of those stores have outright closed. Mostly because it's kind of hard to market a gang when they've gone and embarrassed an entire government and probably scared the shit out of other world leaders as well. Not to mention a good chunk of the public.
That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if there were at least a handful of Planet Saints stores that were still operating. Mostly cause let's be real here; the concept of a celebrity criminal has been a thing for ages now. That kind of reputation can still go strong even years down the line. And with my ideas of the Boss doing work that blurs the line on whether he's for the people or a selfish piece of shit, you know damn well there will still be people itching to grab the latest in Saints merchandise. Especially if it's like chic streetwear or something.
One last thing to mention are the former Syndicate strongholds in Steelport that are turned over to the Saints once they've been acquired. The 3 Count Casino, the Burns Hill Reactors (which was definitely made into a nightclub), Safeword (a brothel), and Powder (designer weapons store) are obviously making bank for the crew as well.
Again, I won't do the math to try and realistically think about how much cash they're earning on say a monthly or even yearly basis. But this is definitely stuff to consider for threads and anything else that might involve business opportunities for the gang in the future. I think what's funny to me is that this probably doesn't even come close to what much more established criminal organizations across the globe might earn on the daily. Like some of these fuckers work off of that old money shit. But I mean hey, maybe these bozos can get on that level one of these days.

Hey #labour, you should hire me to talk at you about how to actually fix Britain:
Terfs are the enemy, Trans folx are the people.
Small businesses need support on the ground level in order to foster amazing communities.
Invest in education to the point teachers are as paid well as their private peers or dare I say as well as an MP. I would say that if an MP describes their role as being vital, integral and essential to running the country, who receives a handsome tax paid salary with expenses paid with the public purse, why is it that other public sector roles are paid relatively below minimum wage? This applies to all public sector workers; civil servants, NHS staff, and teachers of all stripes. They are just as vital, integral, and essential to running the country, if not more so, than the openly profiteering geezers in Westminster.
Why is it that the rule makers are more important than those ensuring that the rules work? Those holding up society and holding it together are so sorely underpaid in this country that they are giving their lives to you at pittance so you can be okay. The NHS is a wonderful thing, and it breaks my heart that we don't fully fund it. The same goes for education, social services, community organisations, and libraries. These currently literally keep people existing at the bare minimum, but when fully funded and staffed, they transform lives for the better.
Equal pay for Equal work 》 Equal pay for Equal Importance. Ignore the 'we can't pay them the hundreds of thousands that MPs get' elephant in the room. I want you instead to imagine a world in which all public sector workers are paid the exact same amount regardless of hierarchy or public aspect they interact with. I'm no expert, but I reckon £86,584, the basic annual salary for a UK MP in 2023, would be an absolute god send to a junior doctor on roughly £38k. My partner practically works at minimum wage for 50 hours when you account for the marking, the planning, the organisation of your entire schedule to an impromptu meeting with angry parents and worrying about ofsted. It has worn them down, mostly because we can't have a social life, spending money on the theatre, in shops, on things that make us happy and human. We can't save, and we can't afford nice things. That fucking sucks. It wears a person out and throws them out of the system that's holding up the world.
Everyone I know is feeling like the above, regardless if they're private or public, freelance or salaried. One solution to help is basic universal income. Give everyone over 16 £500 & everyone over 18 £1000 each month for a year and see how awesome it would be in a year's time. I already know how much good that would do to me and everyone I know.
So pay everyone £12,000 a year and then pay all public sector workers the base salary of £86,000 rising in step with inflation. If the private sector can, in theory, pay whatever wages it wants, having a guarantee that your basics are paid will eliminate sooooo much stress. Rich folx can donate theirs, college kids can do interesting work at college because £500 buys a lot of art supplies and travel to museums, exhibitions, and events. Youth would have means to explore the nation before university or set up in an apprenticeship. Our elderly can use it to afford end of life care provisions or enrich their retirement or hell, just keep the lights on. Working folx would undoubtedly benefit the most and would probably like their jobs much more if they know things are covered.
To foot the bill, impose a commons tax on all privately owned land that fairly compensates the commons, ie, the UK public, back.
Make the North part of your game plan, rather than a foot note.
On a serious note; nationalise the railway system and expand the network. It is hell going east to west here, up to 3 hours to go 50 miles west and just 3 to get to London from Selby in North Yorkshire. How is this acceptable?
Invest in working class politicians to bring the reality of Britain back into government. Without our views or experiences on the table, why are we surprised when the Tories fuck us over again? If you want true, enthusiastic support from the British people, do not talk at us as if we're irresponsible children and actually engage with the very liberal and progressive discussions we have daily. Especially people under 40 - the older generation that pulled us out of the EU will be gone soon - you need to court and actually help out.

Looking For Reasons To Hire A Trustworthy Well Drilling Company?
Wells not only give homes access to free, clean water, but they can also supply clean water in the event of a power outage. Drinking well water can also be far healthier than drinking tap water.
Self-drilling a well, however, can be very difficult. It might be more advantageous, practical, and cost-effective to hire an experienced well drilling company to drill your next well.
We’ve outlined the eleven most important reasons why hiring a professional well drilling company is the better option in order for providing cool, clean water to your family.
Expertise: Qualified well drilling companies possess the knowledge and experience necessary to guarantee a safe and efficient drilling process. They have received training in seeing and resolving potential issues before they escalate. Before deciding which business to hire, you can read online reviews to make a more informed decision.
Convenience: If you’re like most Americans, you work more than 40 hours per week. When you account for time at work, your commute, and your daily activities, you might only have a few hours to relax at home. And it is extremely possible that you will need to invest more time or energy in other home remodeling projects. As a result, hiring an expert to perform well drilling services may be the most sensible choice for conscientious homeowners.
Equipment: Specialized equipment and tools required for drilling a well are available to professional well drilling businesses. Drilling equipment, pumps, and water treatment systems are a few examples of this.
Danger: Well drilling could be dangerous. This is especially true if you live in a place where sinkholes are frequent. Therefore, hiring a specialist before starting your drilling activity may be useful.
Since a well drilling specialist is aware of the risks involved in the technique, they can keep both himself and others safe while performing it. It can be challenging to keep animals and young children safe when drilling.
Efficiency: Skilled well drilling companies are capable of doing the job swiftly. They are equipped and knowledgeable enough to finish the task quickly.
Early Well Use: If you hire an expert to drill and assist you with the building, you may be able to use a finished well quickly. It can take weeks or months if you attempt to do it yourself.
This is because you’ll need to examine your yard, decide where to drill, actually drill, and then build the well. That takes a lot of time, and without professional guidance, it might not be worthwhile.
Expense: While hiring a professional well drilling business may first seem more expensive, the cost of doing it yourself could soon rise if you need to buy specialist equipment or run into issues while drilling.
Permitting: Prior to drilling a well, you might need to obtain a permit depending on where you live. Professional well drilling firms are knowledgeable about the permitting procedure and can assist in making sure you have all the required paperwork.
Maintenance: To keep your well operating correctly, professional well drilling companies can also offer maintenance and repair services.
Warranty: Many expert well drilling businesses provide guarantees on their work, which can offer assurance and protection in the event of any problems.
Quality: Expert well drilling firms take pleasure in their job and work hard to produce outcomes of the highest caliber. You can feel certain that your well will be drilled appropriately and will serve as a dependable source of water for years to come by hiring a professional.
If you are considering drilling your own well, we advise saving time and resources and allowing a professional well drilling company to handle the work.
If you decide to hire a well drilling company, Jon’s Well and Pump Services Inc. is an experienced, knowledgeable well drilling company located in Deltona, Florida. Call them for a quote at 386-801-5334 or contact them.

Recovering from Google Penalties: A Step-by-Step Guide
In the world of SEO, receiving a Google penalty can be a nightmare for website owners. These penalties can significantly impact your website's ranking and visibility in search results. However, the good news is that recovery is possible with the right strategy and approach. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of recovering from Google penalties and regaining your website's SEO health.
Identify the Penalty
The first step in recovery is to identify the type of penalty your website has received. Google typically issues two types of penalties: manual and algorithmic. Manual penalties are imposed by Google's human reviewers, while algorithmic penalties are automatic and related to updates like Panda or Penguin. To identify the penalty, log in to your Google Search Console account and check for any notifications or messages from Google regarding the penalty.
Conduct a Thorough Site Audit
Once you've identified the penalty, conduct a comprehensive audit of your website. Look for issues related to content quality, backlinks, on-page SEO, and technical issues. Tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and SEO auditing tools can help identify problem areas.
Resolve On-Page SEO Issues
Address any on-page SEO issues such as duplicate content, thin or low-quality content, keyword stuffing, or hidden text. Ensure that your content is valuable, relevant, and follows Google's content guidelines. Make necessary changes and improvements to your website's pages.
Remove or Disavow Toxic Backlinks
If your penalty is related to backlinks, identify and remove or disavow toxic or spammy links. Google considers high-quality, relevant backlinks as a positive ranking factor, so focus on building a clean and natural backlink profile.
Improve User Experience
Enhance your website's user experience by optimizing page load times, ensuring mobile responsiveness, and fixing broken links or 404 errors. A user-friendly website is more likely to regain its rankings.
Create High-Quality Content
Content is king in the world of SEO. Create high-quality, engaging, and valuable content that meets the needs of your target audience. Focus on providing unique insights, solving problems, and delivering value to your readers.
Request Reconsideration (For Manual Penalties)
If you received a manual penalty, you can request reconsideration after making the necessary improvements. In your reconsideration request, explain the steps you've taken to rectify the issues and demonstrate your commitment to following Google's guidelines.
Monitor Progress
After implementing the recovery strategy, closely monitor your website's performance using tools like Google Analytics and Search Console. Keep an eye on changes in rankings, traffic, and search impressions.
Stay Compliant with Google's Guidelines
To prevent future penalties, stay updated with Google's guidelines and algorithm updates. Continuously improve your website's SEO practices and focus on delivering a top-notch user experience.
Seek Professional Help if Needed
Recovering from Google penalties can be a complex and time-consuming process. If you're unsure about the steps or need expert guidance, consider hiring an SEO specialist or agency with experience in penalty recovery.
Recovering from Google Penalties: Follow our step-by-step guide to regain rankings and visibility. For expert help, consider SEO services in Chandigarh for penalty recovery and SEO excellence.

The Perfect Project Outsourcing Service Partner Matters
In today's fast-paced business world, outsourcing has become a strategic choice for many organizations looking to streamline their operations, reduce costs, and gain a competitive edge. When it comes to Project outsourcing service, selecting the right partner can make a world of difference. In this article, we will explore the essential factors to consider when choosing the perfect Project outsourcing service partner for your business.
Understanding the Importance of Project outsourcing service
Before diving into the selection process, let us briefly understand why Project outsourcing service is crucial for businesses. Outsourcing allows companies to tap into specialized skills and expertise without the burden of hiring full-time employees. It can help you scale your workforce up or down as needed, adapt to market changes quickly, and focus on your core competencies while experts handle non-core functions.
Identifying Your Business Needs
The first step in choosing the right Project outsourcing service partner is to identify your business needs. Consider the specific tasks or processes you want to outsource. Are you looking for IT support, customer service, accounting, or human resources outsourcing? Define your requirements clearly to narrow down your search.
Evaluating Expertise and Experience
Once you have identified your needs, look for Project outsourcing service partners with expertise and experience in your industry. Review their portfolio and case studies to gauge their track record. An experienced partner will be better equipped to handle the unique challenges of your business and industry.
Developing Business Plan
Make a detailed business plan that includes the project’s purpose, budget, timetable, and expected outcomes. To make sure you and any possible Project outsourcing service partners are on the same page, define your expectations, project deliverables, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Assessing Technology and Infrastructure
In today's digital age, technology plays a pivotal role in outsourcing. Ensure that your potential partner has the latest technology and infrastructure to support your operations efficiently. This includes robust security measures to protect your data and compliance with industry standards.
Top-quality talent
Companies outsource to solve business challenges, such as when they cannot internally find the talents their business requires. Your potential outsourcing provider should also help you build and manage a dedicated offshore team. This way, it will be easier for you to supervise the project without spending too much time following through on its status now and then.
Considering Location and Time Zones
The location of your Project outsourcing service partner matters, especially if you require real-time communication or support. Consider time zone differences and language proficiency to ensure seamless collaboration. A partner in a compatible time zone can offer better responsiveness and communication.
Cost-Effective Solutions
Cost is a significant factor in outsourcing decisions. While it's essential to consider your budget, remember that the cheapest option may not always be the best. Evaluate the value you receive for your investment. Look for a partner that offers a balance between quality and affordability.
Checking References and Reviews
Don't underestimate the power of references and reviews. Reach out to businesses that have worked with your potential Project outsourcing service partner and ask for feedback. Online reviews and testimonials can also provide valuable insights into their reputation and performance.
Transparent Communication
Effective communication is vital for a successful outsourcing partnership. Choose a partner that values transparent and open communication. They should be responsive to your queries and provide regular updates on project progress.
Scalability and Flexibility
Business needs can change rapidly. Ensure that your Project outsourcing service partner can scale their services up or down based on your requirements. Flexibility is key to adapting to evolving business conditions.
Security and Compliance
Data security and compliance are non-negotiable when outsourcing. Ensure that your partner follows strict security protocols and complies with relevant regulations, such as GDPR or HIPAA, if applicable to your industry.
Take Action with Rio Business Solutions
Selecting the right Project outsourcing service partner is a critical decision that can significantly impact your business's success. By considering factors such as expertise, technology, location, cost, and communication, you can make an informed choice that aligns with your business goals. Remember that a well-chosen Project outsourcing service partner can become a valuable extension of your team, helping you achieve greater efficiency and competitiveness in the market.
If you are looking for a reliable outsourcing company in the India, consider working with Rio Business Solutions.
