I have a bus going past me, a train going over me and a boat passing under me. Where am I in Newcastle? The answer is found in this painting. The High Level Bridge was designed by Robert Stephenson. Stephenson designed the steam locomotive the Rocket with his father George and Henry Booth. The High Level Bridge was built between 1847 and 1849. It is the first major example of a wrought iron tied arch bridge. In 1849 on the 28th September, Queen Victoria officially opened the bridge without a formal ceremony. Her train simply coming to a royal halt on the new bridge. In 2005, the road that runs through the bridge was closed completely to enable essential repairs. These were to be undertaken to a cost of £43 million, about a 100 times more than the bridge originally cost to be built! It re-opened in 2008 but only for south bound buses and taxis to reduce loads on the bridge. This view of Newcastle’s High Level Bridge is one of my favourite paintings of Newcastle. I first painted it back in 1992 except my first watercolour featured some of the buildings on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne. A few years later I decided to do another version. This time I wanted to capture the low level fog and mist that sometimes hangs over the river. The view is taken from the very highest point on Newcastle’s Keep. It provides a terrific vantage point for many of the cities famous landmarks. It’s been one of my more challenging paintings as it’s not easy trying to paint fog in a convincing manner. One has to paint certain elements of the bridge and foreground structures as though there was no fog. Then you lift them out using a brush and clean water once they are dry. It was also very important to paint the architectural details with great precision. It’s not just of the bridge, but also of the buildings nearby to add to the authenticity of the scene. I was delighted when my art teacher from my middle school days bought one of the prints of the High Level Bridge. #fogonthetyne #highlevelbridge #bridges #newcastle #newcastleupontyne #newcastlebridges #watercolour #fog #trains (at Alan Reed Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTZ2oLvI3Hn/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today was such a tiring day but enjoyed every minute of it taking a ton of photos and spending it with @nikko.o_x . I miss Edmonton already. I don't think I'll ever enjoy driving around in Calgary. #bridges #bridge #northsaskatchewanriver #edmontonpinoy #rainbowbridge #highlevelbridge #walterdalebridge #dudleymenziesbridge #edmontondowntown #edmonton #mobilephotography #samsung #nightography #s22ultra (at Edmonton Commonwealth Walkway) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb4IzAtO2Lh/?utm_medium=tumblr

Edmonton at sunset is actually pretty nice. But then again, I think any place during sunset is also pretty nice. . . . . #yegdowntown #downtownedmonton #highlevelbridge #exploreedmonton #bridgesoftheworld (at Edmonton, Alberta) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWOdoUegAch/?utm_medium=tumblr

(S 28.06.2020): Three years ago, I rode the Streetcar that runs on the top of the High Level Bridge (left) beside the LRT Bridge (right). With COVID-19: I don't think that the High Level Bridge Streetcar is running. 🙁

Took a drive this morning into the City and on the way back Pac-manned it across the High Level Bridge... because I was the ONLY vehicle on it! The "stay home" and "Covid-19" makes everywhere feel surreal. Like a dream. Almost post-apocalyptic. . #tacoma #trdsport #scoop #yeg #highlevelbridge #sundaymorning #drive #isolation #perspective #covid (at High Level Bridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-5COMYADiS/?igshid=kvccrq38lmms

Sit back, relax and let the sun melt it all away. ☀️☀️▪️☀️▪️☀️ This weekend was the warmest we've had so far this year. Not only did I dust off and rock a 2-year old wig, Enoch came up from Calgary to chill for the weekend. We went shopping, walked the #highlevelbridge, partied it up and made some delicious #food; #Mushroom #Risotto, #Boconccini #Salad and steamed #Mussels in #WhiteWine #Sauce. #NoFilterNeeded #YEG #Foodie #ItalianFood #RubyWoo #Walks (at Edmonton, Alberta) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvKmA4TAdbB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=9ngg2yqafolg

For the last two days our daily walks have taken my brother @garrettpich and myself over the The High Level Bridge. This is a bridge that spans the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Constructed by John B. Gunn and Sons and opened June 2, 1913. Located next to the Alberta Legislature Building, the bridge linked the separate communities of Edmonton and Strathcona, which became one city in 1912. It was designed from the outset to accommodate rail, streetcar, two-way automobile, and pedestrian traffic. The original bridge design included three tracks on the upper deck (one CPR track with one streetcar track on either side). I'd just like to take a minute today and thank my family and friends, and everyone for your support. For the prayers, well wishes, texts, phone calls, visits... There's been so much and I'm so grateful for the love and support I've received over the years while battling this thing called #sicklecell. I couldn't, and can't do it without y'all. So, this is just me saying THANK YOU! It never goes unnoticed. Today is world sickle cell day and it is to my understanding that the city of Edmonton is lighting up the high-level bridge in the Sickle Cell Foundation of Alberta's colors in support of those with #sicklecelldesease. I'm not sure what time this is happening but I'll be heading towards that area around 9ish. There's a gazebo at Grant Notley park that overlooks the river valley and the bridge, this is where I'll be, all are welcome! If you like to join, feel free to send me a message. Bless! #sicklecellisglobal #worldsicklecellday #sicklecell #sicklecellwarrior #yeg #yyz #yyc #yvr #edmonton #highlevelbridge (at Edmonton, Alberta)
